Solve : Faulty Graphic Card?

Answer»

I'm GETTING this screen since yesterday:

It happens randomly, with no prompt or any beep.

I've GOT this a few times yesterday.

This morning, it's getting worse. I can't boot into my Windows. It either will remain blank black at the boot option page, or at the stage after the Windows logo.

After a few tries, I try to switch to the analog output connector instead of the digital one which I've been using all the while. And so far it's running well.

My graphic card is 6-year-old, is this a sign of "retirement"?
Good evening Michael and welcome to CH

If it is working fine with the VGA cable but not DVI cable did you try another VGA cable

If a different cable does not help I would say yes it maybe time for a new card.

Hope this helps, Mike

Please let us know how you make out. Quote from: hartbeatmr on September 11, 2012, 07:42:39 PM

If it is working fine with the VGA cable but not DVI cable did you try another VGA cable

Do you mean another DVI cable?

Currently I don't have a spare DVI cable. So perhaps I shall monitor whether the VGA cable is actually working fine for today and probably next coming few days.

If the VGA output is working fine but the DVI output is fault, is it safe to say that the card is actually still can be used?Good evening Michael and welcome back

Most of the time when this happens it is the video card. But it can be the input on the display as well. What model LCD / CRT do you have ?

And sorry but when you said "After a few tries, I try to switch to the analog output connector instead of the digital one" I have always known analog as VGA and digital as DVI so that is why I said that.

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike I'm using a Samsung SyncMaster EX1920

Hi again Michael

Those are nice LCD's it is possible that one of the ports on the LCD being bad but not normally on those LCD. The issue that I have had to fix on Samsung's is they would turn on and right off and that ends up being bad caps on the boards in the LCD.

I would bet your issue is either bad cable or video card, Mike The VGA cable I'm currently connecting came with the monitor, brand new, NEVER use.

Unfortunately, the issue remains.

So I guess it's the card.

Sad to say that my 6-year-old machine is retiring after serving well for such an extended period of time.

New machine coming this evening.Have you tried removing all power to the PC and removing and re-seating the card ? ?Quote from: patio on September 12, 2012, 07:33:19 AM
Have you tried removing all power to the PC and removing and re-seating the card ? ?
Yes. That was the first thing I did. Tried multiple times. Same result.

OK.
Most likely the card then...try it in another PC to confirm.Hi Patio,

I tried it on my friends PC, TWO different machine, but both would not boot beyond the Windows logo.

Ironically, when I try to put their graphic card into my machine, it wouldn't boot beyond the Windows logo either.

Now that's weird - does it mean it's not the graphic card at fault?

However, my friend said that the above issue (wouldn't boot when swapping card) could be due to the chipset compatibility, same like plugging a harddisk with Windows ONTO another machine.

Is that true?

Solve : New hard drive help!!!?

Answer»

New hard drive and need to KNOW how to install windows 7 on it. Already have windows 7 on current hard drive so not looking for full version. I've been told a factory reset and a clone using image software with a usb hard drive adapter will transfer everything over but im a little leery on doing so without guaranteeing windows 7 will transfer. So basically, whats the easiest/cheapest way to get windows 7 on my new hard drive?
Toshiba SATELLITE a505 s6980
Old HD: TOSHIBA MK5055GSX
New HD: TOSHIBA MK5061GSYN
Too bad it wasnt a desktop as for you could install 2 hard drives and clone the drive easily with software from the drive manufacturer. With laptops its more involved with migration to a new drive. The easiest and cheapest method is to create the restore DVD set to DVD-R's, which should be in Toshiba tools I think. Its been 3 YEARS since I had to on my Toshiba Satellite. Use an external hard drive to MOVE all personal data off of the original drive to the external. Then swap hard drives and boot laptop off of DVD 1 of the recovery set and install clean windows 7, activate with Microsoft, then copy your data back from an external to your new hard drive.

A process that can save you from installing software and updates, but comes at the cost of buying the latest version of Norton Ghost is to buy Ghost, install it. And create an image to an external hard drive connected VIA USB. Then create a image boot disc that will grab the image off the external and transfer that to the new drive.

I personally like to install clean to new drives whenever possible, but if your system is highly configured and you have software installed that would take hours to reinstall you might want to go with a new version of Ghost and pass an image to an external and then back to the new drive.
Every time i run backup i get errors about files that couldnt be open
Is this cloned drive to be used as a backup ? ?
Or what other purpose ?
No it's got faster RAM so i'm looking to replace my old one as the old one is pretty slow anyway
Do you have an external HDD ? ?No but if i got a usb transfer cable for hard drive wouldnt it work the same way?http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-ways-to-clone-and-copy-your-hard-drive/
Back up your files first then do a factory restore then image the drive.

Solve : Dell XPS one desktop video card?

Answer»

Hello everyone, recently my video card has stopped functioning correctly, but I've been looking online and I cant FIND A clear answer to what video card I can replace it with. I'm a computer noob, so would appreciate all the help. I would definately like to buy a card used or new that's affordable also. Thank you for all your help.Post the model # of your Dell...there's alot of different XPS's...and we'll have a LOOK at what it can take.Hello, thank you, sorry about that, I believe my model number is Dell XPS One a2010Is that a slim all-in-one unit ? ?yes, it's one of the all in computerHmmm That may make replacement a tad difficult ...modular design similar to laptops.
Whats the video doing ?aww I was sort of worried about that....the COLOR seems to be faded and a BIT blurry, especially during videos. One thing you can try is re-installing the drivers...
There should be a Driver CD that came with it...i believe the CD starts AUTOMATICALLY when you use it.

The other thing it may be is the display itself...see if it has a video output jack for connecting an external monitor to test.will do, thanks a lot. you;re the best dudeYou're more than Welcome...

Solve : Tower turns on but nothing else does?

Answer»

Ok so I've had this problem three or four times before and I USUALLY fix it by resetting the BIOS but this time it's just not working I reset it then turn the computer back on and the same THING happens the tower powers on and the fans start working and everything but still no power or image on the screen and no power to the keyboard or mouse. For about 1 second after I turn the computer on the lights on the keyboard light up but then they turn off. I asked around and someone said replace your PSU so I did that but now I still have the same problem! Is there anyone out there who can help.

Regards, Ben.Welcome to CH 8enjamine. Please post as much information, specs., model, error messages and issues prior and going to the problem. Do you hear any beeps when powering up or have you tried removing your MEMORY sticks, hard drive, dedicated cards and using only the motherboard, PSU and monitor together? ok, well i was just on my computer then i went to move the tower to unplug my moue to change to a different one and when i moved the tower. my computer froze, i then turned it off and when i went to turn it back on the problem arose, i went to turn it back on and only the tower powered on. all fans are running so doesn't seem to be a problem there. here are the specs of the computer:
Graphics card: ASUS 9800GTX
Unsure of my processor but i know its intel
Powersupply prior to incident was a Codegen 825W ATX 12W
Power supply now is a Corsair GS 700 V2
RAM: CORSAIR CM2x1024 DDR2
MOBO: ASUS P5KPL-CM
do not hear any beeps when powering up and havn't tried powering on without graphics card or RAM yet will give that a shot.Check the cable connections and make sure they are fully plugged in. You mentioned it freezing when you moved it. You could also TRY reseating your graphics card.ive tried all the obvious things like that 500 times is there anything else that might be wrong?
USE the onboard video with PSU and monitor plugged-in only to check on the difference.Quote from: 8enjamin on September 15, 2012, 12:10:29 AM

ive tried all the obvious things like that 500 times is there anything else that might be wrong?

We don't know what is "obvious" to you and what isn't.
The key indicator of the likely cause is that it happened when you moved the system.
You might have jogged something loose. RAM. CPU. Display card. Power connectors.
If you didn't do it gently, you might even have cracked the motherboard.

Solve : New rig issues?

Answer»

Hey guys,

I just bought a new setup:

Intel I7 3770K
Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H
MSI GTX 660 TFZ
8GB corsair vengeance 1600
PSU 600W

I've connected them all correctly... there mobo has a panel for debugging, and it says: "97" which MEANS:"Console Output devices connect (ex. MONITOR is lighted)"

I tried to remove the GFX card and to use the onboard. It worked. I tried to install windows, but the keyboard and the mouse is not working on the installation process...

Not sure what's going on wrong here...the gfx card should work just fine....any ideas? It's driving me crazyits a long shot but MIGHT be worth checking the RAM, like trying one card at a time.Try the card in a different PCI-E slot, see if it helps. Does your keyboard work to get you into the BIOS? What version of Windows are you trying to install? I'd ASSUME Windows 7 but best to check. Finally, what power supply are you using?

Used to work fine, but randomly started going out of sync. Didn't install anything new.I don't think I will be able to help you any further on this point. I am going to concede and LET someone ELSE JUMP in.

Solve : Can anyone explain this??

Answer»

Been comparing the samsung 7 laptops, and obviously the 17"version stronger then the 15 and 14...but using notebook check, the 14"PLAYS gw2 the best even though it has gt 630 while the other 2 have gt 640 and 650 respectively. Also it has a i5 and last RAM than the.others, (they have i7).

but overall the 17" did better on most games but the 14 did.better on a few...

So do some guys just play better on some cards even they are the same family and lower model?

ThanksWithout looking up the specs, I'd hazard a guess that the 14" has a lower resolution panel than the other models. Less PIXELS to push = higher performance. Different games will be affected differently by this, too.

Solve : Acer Aspire One Screen Not Centered On Boot?

My Acer Aspire One will at random times on boot show a PARTIAL screen that is not centered. It is all the way to the left with the right side of the screen black. There is no way to GET it centered. I have to restart or cold start sometimes several times to correct this. This SEEMS to be a not rare problem I have seen on the net, but no one has a solution. The computer is several years old with only one repair a new keyboard. I have UPDATED the video driver from the Acer website, but it did not fix the problem.

Solve : Epson Photo Stylus R800 Printer Problem?

Answer»

My ten year old self built PC has been virtually fault free and has SERVED me extremely well until very recently when I started having sudden printing problems.

My operating system is Windows Home XP SP3 with an Abit NF7 Motherboard with 1.5Gb Memory and an AMD Athlon XP 2600+ CPU. My present printer is an Epsom Photo Stylus R800 (about 5 years old), connected via USB. I have been using continuously compatible ink carts. from the same supplier after the original Epson’s ran out. I have never had any problems with these ink carts.

The problem with this printer………. About 3 weeks ago a couple of the 8 cartridges were beginning to run out, but I was able to carry on printing for awhile whilst I ordered new inks. BEFORE FITTING the new carts. and at first the colour (mainly photos) and text were as normal. The next colour photo had a very ‘magenta’ colour cast over the whole picture and since then every photo, although the colours seem to be present, has this same magenta hue over them. Text colour when in a document and black text appear as normal. I replaced the near empty carts. including the ‘gloss optimizer.’ After fitting these it is impossible to get the chequered pattern from this latter CART to print the normal pattern. It seems to be ‘firing’ on about half the jets randomly, exactly the same random pattern every print test. I completed about six ‘cleans’ which of course was using up all the inks. I assumed a problem with the new gloss optimizer. I contacted the ink supplier who sent me not only another new G. O. but 2 other colours as I had used a lot of ink trying to get a normal print out, all FREE incidentally. The new gloss optimizer after several cleans is showing EXACTLY the same random checkered pattern as before. Colour and black text is printing as normal. All photo prints are still showing the same magenta hue. I have tried plugging the R800 into different USB sockets, all to no avail. Have also tried a different USB cable from printer to PC and altered printer settings etc., again the same fault is apparent. Can anyone throw any light on this problem please?

Many thanks for any help as I can’t afford another quality photo printer at this time.

I should have mentioned above that I had already uninstalled the printer software, closed down the PC, restarted and reinstalled the latest software, unfortunately all to no avail. I have also TEMPORARILY tried a formatted h/d with a clean install of Windows XP, then installing and testing the R800, exactly the same fault as originally occurs. This now seems to be a big problem with the printer itself. If that is the case does anyone out there know what can be done about it apart from chucking it out and buying a new model?

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated!

Solve : CPU Upgrade Possible??

Answer»

Dear Forum,

I am thinking of getting an old Dell LATITUDE X1 PP05S 12" netbook. I really like the light weight and asthetics, but it uses a Pentium M processor and will be really slow. Is there anything I can do to speed it up? Does ANYONE make replacement mother boards for modern CPU's; or can I substitute a better CPU?

THANKS!
Mike
How much RAM does it have? Will it support more RAM? If so, adding RAM would probably improve performance.

What OS does it have? The Latitude X1 has only 1 RAM slot & will support 1GB. CPU is not upgradeable.SSD is the way to go to speed them up as well as extend battery LIFE. I made the upgrade to a OCZ 60GB on my Toshiba netbook for $50 on sale at newegg, which is running Windows XP Home SP3 with Atom dual-core CPU. Downgraded the capacity from 160GB SATA to 60GB SATA, but needed speed vs storage capacity. Fast Boots, Fast to load applications, etc and now I get almost 9 hrs battery life on it vs about 6 hrs before.

Solve : Computer not picking up graphics card.?

Answer»

hi im new here so will explain whats happening quick

erm went to work last night and came back to find my computer was ... and not picking up the graphics card (dont have a clue why) it was working before i left for work so i dont know how anything has gone wrong without anyone touching it and it was off lol, my graphics card is a Nvidia geforce 430 (cpuid wont pick it up anymore because apparently its not there and shows a ATI radeon 3000) and ive had the whole computer unit for around 2 years nearly. i can still use the computer but i have to connect the monitor to the motherboard not the graphics card anymore and i cant play any games =/

alo the fan is still running on the graphics card so could that cancel out the motherboard?

thanks in advance will be watching the thread as i have nothing else to do Keep it clean...

We have Members of all ages here.If you remove the video card and the system runs fine on integrated, but you install the video card and the video card doesnt function it could be video card or power supply is running weaker than it use to. If its the power supply you will have no display out either nVidia video card ADAPTER or integrated and system may run fans etc, but will probably not boot further. If its video card you can have no output from nVidia adapter, but yet integrated will run. If you have a spare video card that WOULD be a good test device to swap video cards, install drivers, and see if that helps. If you install another video card and also black screen no display on either integrated or the video card then power supply is prob bad if it runs fine without video card installed and on integrated only.

well when i GO to open my nvidia control panel it doesnt pick up any nvidia devices =/

and i dont have a spare so yeah will have to wait till i buy one of ebay and hope that its the problem lol no other way to test it?Remove all power...then remove and re-seat the vid card and power up...

You could also try re-installing the original drivers that shipped with the card.i dont think i got the drivers with the card not 100% sure

i just removed the card and put it back in but nothing has changed at the moment Vtune is telling me everytime i restart my computer to reinstall/upodate the display drivers so i will have to check for the cd. if i cant find it am i able to download it online? because i cant ACTUALY get onto my nvidia control panel =/They will be available online...yes.ok just got the VGA driver compact disk that came with my computer for my graphics card and its saying that its not suitable for the chip that i have so it still does not detect that i have the nvidia geforce gt 430 installed so what can i do now lol is it broken or is the graphics card slot on the motherboard broken?no more help? really just want to find out which part of the computer i have to replace if its going to be expensive might aswell scrap this one and buy a new one Quote from: P4TTL on September 17, 2012, 09:18:17 AM

ok just got the VGA driver compact disk that came with my computer for my graphics card and its saying that its not suitable for the chip that i have so it still does not detect that i have the nvidia geforce gt 430 installed so what can i do now lol is it broken or is the graphics card slot on the motherboard broken?
The CD that came with the computer is for the onboard Radeon 3000.nope its for the geforce it says its not compatible with the radeon and cant find the geforce. If cpuid says you have a Radeon, then you need those drivers.i have both i have the case open and im staring directly at the geforce gt 430 i dont understand why its saying i have a radeon and how its changed i will take PICTURES and upload them.well this is my geforce gt 430 which i have the driver cd for that came with the computer from nearly 2 years ago that has been running perfectly until now. i think cpuid isnt saying i have it because its not being detected or because i havent got my monitor cable plugged into the graphics card anymore because all i get is "no signal" from it so i have to play it straight into the motherboard (normal) socket.

Solve : PC No Boot - No Display on Monitor?

Answer»

Hi, I'm hoping you guys can help me clarify the ISSUE my PC is having.

Graphics card packed in recently, went with quite a pop yesterday.

Picked up a new card to replace it and I'm not getting any display on the PC when it boots up, I was ALSO not getting any POST Beeps.

Details of PC I have:

Motherboard: ASRock x fire-e
2 Gig DDR2 Ram (1 Stick is new)
SATA Drives
Graphics Card: ASUS HD 5450 Silent (512MB)
BT Wireless LAN Card

(Yeah, it's an old PC, but in this climate needs must...)

Once I disconnected everything I'm getting beeps again, it sounds like 2 followed by 9. Total of 11. Am I right that is a Bad Motherboard Cache, which means it's time for a new motherboard (something I'm hoping to avoid).

Only things that have changed are the Graphics Card and the extra stick of RAM.

Also, if I do need to go to a new MB, any recommendations for something compatible to what I have there already? It needs to be as cheap as possible - PC is only for browsing, writing and flash games at most.

Much appreciated. What AMD CPU are you using? x-fire is only suggestion that your AMD and not SLI - IntelIt's AMD, but beyond that I can't be more specific as I can't remember and without the monitor display I can't really get any more info at this time.

If I have to get a new chip at the same time as the MB, I'm fine with one that has a built in CPU, I don't need computing power for what I use it for. FaultyPC, Welcome to the CH forums. I am sure it is becoming apparent to you that nibble by nibble you are expending monetary resources as you try to deal with your current computer's issues. The items you have thus far replaced have not solved your issue. You are now contemplating more expenditures with no assurance that they will improve the situation either. To the extent that you can i would suggest returning what you already have purchased for a refund and not buy anymore pieces. If you were to total up where you could be going it would either be close or exceed what which with a moderate search you could purchase a whole working computer for. In that regard in reference to your stated needs of a computer and no DESIRE to actually upgrade to something more current you should easily be able to find either a used unit or a refurbished one. There are many avenues of purchase OPTIONS available to you only limited by your geography. My caution would be that whatever your source you ensure some warranty that at least the replacement will function properly.Just to whet your appetite i have purchased many computers this way and never been disappointed. Probably the best instance was a Dell XPS (new around $5,000.00) for $3,00 with all software and manuals plus keyboard and mouse. Not to say you will be as lucky but take some time and effort and you can do well.truenorthtruenorth, thank you. It is an option to switch to a new PC, however I built this one myself in 2008 and I don't really desire to switch. In addition any other PC I pick up I would want to transfer into the case I currently have and switch the Hard Drives across (or at least salvage the data from them). So at best that is a back up plan here.Eliminate your cable and keep the ON option for like THIRTY a few moments to a instant and then hook up it back and turn it onPlease feel free to ignore the above post.

Solve : Speakers clicking before playing sounds?

Answer»

I have a Win7 laptop, a HP Pavilion dv6, and it just started to make a clicking sound before playing every sound, as though it is powering the amplifier for the speakers and then turning it off. It hadn't done this before, and the only thing I did to the system between it doing this and not is RUNNING CloneZilla, which probably didn't do anything (this was a backup operation).

I find it odd that it even does this when the speakers are muted, but I haven't been getting any sound, period, out of the headphone jack; I know that I used to be able to.

HP's support, I know, is less than ideal - they would have me do a system recovery with discs that were never shipped to me, which would later require me to reinstall programs I cannot reinstall (stupid activation count limits).

I have all the latest updates from MS installed, and a run of the HD in ClamAV (booting from a LINUX CD) turned out clean; additionally, the MBR of the disk is untouched from the backup I made last month.

Is there any known solution to this problem, or is it a hardware problem that I could order a part for? I _cannot_ send the system to HP because they will wipe it, and the problem with the programs I can't reinstall.

EDIT: I just found a link to the Beats audio entering power saving - the dialog allows setting a power saving mode time from 0 to 100 seconds; 0 does not disable it, though, but rather makes it immediatly enter power saving. I do not want it to click at all, though, so 100 seconds is far too shortYou are familiar with Linux and are questioning whether its hardware related vs Microsoft Windows driver. I'd go with booting off of an ISO of Linux such as Ubuntu and see if the audio issue is still there when running Ubuntu as a LiveOS direct from CD or DVD without installing it to HD. Visit a website with music or sound and see if it acts the same as in windows. If it does then you know its hardware related, otherwise I'd be looking at drivers.

My favorite LiveOS for troubleshooting systems is Knoppix which is intended to run Live from Read-Only STATE. Ubuntu is good too, but dont have as many bells and whistles. I also have a bootable thumb drive with Fedora 16 on it that is a useful tool, so if you know how to make a bootable thumb drive you can go that route too.2AM is not the best time to be troubleshooting, which is when I was on the first message. 7AM isn't either, which is now

I didn't feel that going and burning a new SLAX disc was entirely necessary, given that people have trouble with ALSA going into a power saving state already, which itself causes the same symptom. Also Windows likely has more specialised drivers for the hardware than Linux does, and the more specialised driver could have power modes or something.

I burned a new SLAX disc and, upon booting it, when detecting resolutions, the computer rebooted. It apparently hates SLAX. I'll bring some CD-RWs to college and try to find a working disc. Irionicly enough, I destroyed two of HP's partitions to make space for an eventual Linux install on here (why they needed to ship with four partitions on the system is beyond me). I did this over a month ago, though.

I need to leave in 3 minutes, I'll be back laterFor some reason I cannot modify my previous post - must be the different IP here at college.

I tried to boot SLAX again EARLIER, and failed. Then I dumped the ISO that I burned and found that it differed from the source image...I think the media is faulty. Anyway, I currently have the timeout for the sound hardware at 60 seconds IIRC, and have enabled/disabled the hardware as needed. I discovered shortly before I left home that my headphones are to fault for no sound out that jack, I will test it again later with a known functional set of speakers.

I will later dig into the registry to see if I can find a key for the timeout for power saving on the audio. Then I will see if I can force it to be 7200 seconds (two hours). Right now, with the headache I got from the speaker popping, a bit of lost power is no problem (I am normally at a socket anyway). And if that doesn't work, I'll set it to 100 seconds and write a program in VB6 that will try to play a dummy audio file every minute - which should hopefully keep the hardware powered properly. I will also keep trying to get a Linux distro to boot - even if it means making a partition on the HD to hold a disc image to boot from.

Solve : laptop battery charging only for 4 minutes...?

Answer»

hi
ive compaq presario CQ60 and m using windows vista.
ive a problem with the charging, dont know exactly whats the cause of it.
the battery charges for 4 minutes then stops charging, after a little time when i again plug in it again charges for that much time and stops then..
please help out me about the cause and solution....
Dead battery...replace it.
Unfortunately they are not cheap as you are about to find out...I just fixed a cq60 for someone and bought one with a BROKEN screen for $60 and resold for $100. Anyways buy a new battery. Can be had for $30. http://www.buy.com/prod/compaq-presario-cq40-cq45-cq50-cq60-cq70-replacement-battery-free-all/q/sellerid/26076229/loc/101/216556204.htmlwell it doesnt seem to be a battery problem coz when i plug in without battery , the laptop remains on for that much time and then gets off. when i do it again after a lil time it again remains on for that much time and the cycle goes on....
so now whats the cause... ??
It could be a faulty adapter. It might be overheating (it doesn't take much for some) or it could just be old. If you can find another compatible one, try it out.I think the real cause of this problem is that you have purchased a dead battery or your battery have overheating. We know that batteries get a BIT hot under the collar when they MAX out their charge at 100 percent. This heat will cause the delicate structures within to start to break down, which ultimately makes the battery less capable of holding a charge. I have went throut the same problem, and here I will share my solution,:

1. Is the laptop charging cable intact?
2. What about the laptop’s power connector? It should not be loose.

If the accessories are alright and working fine, then try these steps.

3. If you are still plugged in to the A/C power supply, please disconnect. And Shutdown the laptop.
4. Remove the battery, keep it aside. At-least for 15 – 20 minutes. Till then,
5. Plugged in back to the A/C power supply, yeah, your laptop alone can work on A/C supply, in the absence of battery too. Start the laptop.
6. Click on Start, type(in search bar) and move over to Device Manager. Under Battery, click on “Microsoft ACPI –Compliant Control Method Battery”. Uninstall the driver and scan for hardware changes. Update Drivers, if there is any update.
7. Shutdown the laptop, disconnect the A/C power supply.
8. Insert the battery, connect the A/C power and start it again.
9. Try charging your laptop now, if that fixes your problem “plugged in not charging”, then that's good. Enjoy. If not, read for more solutions to fix the problem.why you take a second thought to a new replacement battery online?

HOPE it can help you!1

ps: why you not take a second thought to buy a new compaq presario cq60 battery replacement online, the price is resonable.Maybe you can take a look at http://www.hplaptopbatteryadapter.com/compaq-presario-cq60-battery-6-cell-5200mah-111v-p-204.htmlThis thread is 2 years old.Spammer...Long response for a Spammer. Solve : My PC power cycles a few times before turning on...?

Answer»

So everytime I hard boot my computer it power cycles 3-4 times before it will completely load up windows. Im guessing it has something to do with the RAM, but Ive tried messing with the power settings and it doesnt seem to help. It has been doing this SINCE I put it together last year and have just delt with it, but I know this cant be good on it. Any ideas? What are you referring to with a "hard boot"? Please explain what it is you are actually doing that eventually does get the computer working. Was there anything that you changed or added to the computer that was coincident with this 1st occurring? If you think it may be RAM related remove all the sticks and add them back one at a time (leaving each one in by itself for a time to see if the computer stays running). Then with only one in try the others one at a time to see if things change. Could also be a defective power on switch. Once it does run does it stay running? What is your operating system?Sounds like a home built computer is that correct? truenorthExactly at what point in the startup does it recycle?
Does it complete POST?
Does it start to load Windows?Yeah sorry, so by hardboot I mean powering it on from on off state and not just a restart. The computer works fine and stays running after the boot up, but that power cycle issue at first is what bothers me. Im on Windows 7 and Ive built several computers, but never run into this problem before. I might try removing the RAM and trying them 1 at a time. That is one thing I havent tried yet... It gets to POST then shuts off for a few seconds then turns itself back on doing this 3-4 times before it finally boots up to windows.Quote from: jefflynn on September 18, 2012, 03:29:49 PM

I would suspect Power Supply (The capacitors in them) and or capacitors on the motherboard, graphics card or any add-on cards.

This is symptomatic behaviour we usually see here in the workshop.

If you have another machine with a PSU of the same or GREATER capacity, try that first.Ive actually tried a different PSU and that didnt help.I've got one that does the same, might restart 0-4 times before the POST. Once it POSTs, it boots & RUNS with no issues. Been fooling with it for months, now I just wait for it to boot. It's a Gigabyte "dual-BIOS" with Pentium-D. I think sometime in the past, the mobo took a power surge because the onboard LAN is dead. All components except the CPU are from different computers.I really hope it isnt an issue with the MOBO. All parts were BRAND new at the time and I just delt with it so now its far beyond warranty.

Solve : Dead Dell?

Answer»

I have a 15 month OLD Dell INSPIRON that was working fine yesterday. Today. It will turn on but mouse and KEYBOARD doesn't light up and will not work. A flash comes on the monitor and says no signal from computer. Any ideas what is up . Thanks, RalphWhat do you mean the mouse and keyboard don't light up? It's a laptop isn't it?It's a desktop.Sorry - forgot Dell started naming Desktops "Inspiron" too.

1) Please do not send PM's to people trying to HELP you. Just reply in this thread.

2) When you turn on the system do you hear the hd spin up? Do any lights come on on the computer itself? EXACTLY what HAPPENS when you press the power button?Sorry about the PM. I press the on button and I can hear the drive . The light comes on. The keyboard does not ligh up nor does the mouse work. Monitor gave that messag, no signal from compuetr. That message means the display isn't receiving a signal from the display adapter. It might be because the adapter (video card) isn't receiving power (bad power supply), it might mean the display adapter is shot, it might even mean there's a problem with the motherboard - though the first two are the more likely issues. I'm guessing bad power supply - but of course that's just an educated guess. Thanks Allen I appreciate the info.

Solve : Printer Alignment?

Answer»

As the subject line states having issues getting my printer to align. Have tried just about everything I can find to fix it with no luck. Took the software off and reinstalled it. Updated the drivers. Went through the alignment process more than once with printing out the page and trying to scan it. Every time it gives me this error saying something like "error with aligning. you may still use the printer but certain settings might not work properly". I can do it again and get the specific message if need be. I've googled this ISSUE and apparently I'm not the only one with this make and model that this has happened to. I'm getting the feeling like I'm just going to have to go buy a new one even though this one isn't even 3 years old and I've barely used it.
Any thoughts or suggestions? Is it even worth considering TAKING it to a repair place or is that not worth the hassle and expense?

Make: hp
Model: C4480Have you checked all paper trays, pads, rollers etc are undamaged and fitted properly? Apparently you are indeed not the only one. They are not very expensive printers, so maybe you will bite the bullet. I gave away a working mid range Canon inkjet that was two years old quite happily because of the cost of cartridges. I bought a mono laser and take my colour stuff to a shop.

Given that your issue is a known one specific to that printer that is likely the problem and will not be solved by anything you can do. If you find nothing jambed then i would buy a replacement. Absolutely do not SEEK repairs unless it is covered under an extended warranty you may have. If you are in the U.S. Wal Mart usually has an all in one printer offered (not refurbished) for $29.95 online that can be picked up at one of their stores of your CHOICE with no DELIVERY cost associated. Cannot even buy cartridges for that. truenorth

Solve : Good laptop for around 500 - 600 Euro?

Answer»

Hi,

I want to buy a good laptop for around 500 - 600 Euro.
I'm going to USE it for League of legends, downloading movies, skype, and sometimes for photoshop and other editing software's.
I want a laptop that has Windows 7, a good video card for gaming and MUCH storage, and if its possible a DVD burner, its not needed but it WOULD be better.
I found this laptop: http://www.vandenborre.be/laptop/sony-sve1511j1esi-be1
,the SONY SVE1511J1ESI/BE1, i don't know if its good.
I hope you can help me The comment i would make on your example is that in most instances you can find computers that are equal or even greater than what a Sony Vaio offers in technology from other manufacturers at considerably lower prices. The combination of Sony and Vaio usually means higher cost. Another point i would make (noting your preference for a win 7 O/S) is that any windows based computer that you buy now even if it comes with win 7 will for a very nominal amount (in N.A. about $15.00) include the option to upgrade to windows 8. Though i do not have any experience with win 8 the consensus of the CH members that have used the preproduction version SEEM inclined to like it. Therefore if the option exists i would take advantage of it.truenorth

Solve : brand new batter will not charge.?

Answer»

A few days ago, my two year old laptop battery stopped charging, but it still ran when it was plugged into a POWER source. I researched some solutions and it seemed that it was just a bad battery. I PURCHASED a new battery and placed it in the laptop, but it still will not charge it. The laptop still continues to work when it is plugged into a power source. Any ideas as to why my laptop won't even charge a brand new battery? Thank you!Hey Asang01,

Sounds to me LIKE the lcd inverter is non functional. Its a $25 part that is housed in the bottom of most screens and converst the 240v to 12v, some MANUFACTURERS only SELL the screen complete with a the inverter ($600 so get second opinion). I had a similar issue with Dell D600 the only difference being is, it wouldnt work IF i had the battery in the laptop but has worked fine for 6 years on mains. If your lucky the other possibility is a loose cable connection to the mainboard. It's his battery...not the screen or inverter.

At any rate with new batteries it's usually best to charge them overnite without using the PC...

Solve : Autoplay and WMP sync woes with HTC One S?

Answer»

Hi guys,

I'm having a BIT of TROUBLE getting autoplay and sync working for my HTC One S. My laptop is running Windows Vista (SP2) and my HTC is running Android 4.0.3. The problem comes when I go to connect my phone to my laptop VIA USB and mount it as a disk drive. Previously with other devices my computer would display the autoplay window which would show me various choices RELATED to music/videos e.g. Sync with WMP, etc. Now the options are all related to pictures, for example "Import Pictures", "View Pictures", "Download Images", etc. The SECOND half of my problem comes when I open up Windows Media Player. My phone does not register as a device within WMP, and so I am unable to sync tracks to it etc.

Is there any way this can be fixed?

Thank you!

One anoying thing when DOWNLOADING photos or videos from my phone or Digital Camera is that it automatically downloads everything everytime.

If you`ve already copied/transfered OLDER photos from the camera to the computer but dont wish to delete them from the camera, then the older photos will get downloaded again doubling up the same photos and making an album disorganised.

Is there a way to download only new photos?Open the phone via My Computer...it will show a list/or thumbs of each photo...right clik the ones you want on the PC and select send to and select the TARGET folder...thanksAnytime...Welcome Aboard.

Solve : pc to tv?

Answer»

I'm watching my COMPUTER on tv but the quality is not great. It's a VGA connection with a sound cable. The picture is not SHARP. What should I expect from this connecton? The pc is a Dell inspiron 1545 the tv is samsung 32" lcd. VGA is an analogue connection and your 32" LCD is going to be a digital system.

There will be a small AMOUNT of blur and readability will be poor anyway. Try changing up resolution of down resolutions until you get to one that works for you. I have found my 21.5" LCD is much sharper at 1920x1080 resolution, than my friends 23" Konka TV at 1920x1080.

Unfortunately your laptop does not support HDMI - this is the way to go, video and sound through one cable if you have a graphics card that supports it.

The native resolution of the TV will be the best. Find out what that is and things should get clearer.to kurtiskain - thanks for the help. I kind of forgot about the analogue digital conversion there. So I have both the pc and tv running on 1360 x 768. Is this the best picture I can get WITHOUT going to HDMI?
ronron69Not necessarily. You may also be able to change some sharpness and contrast settings on the TV itself to get a better image out of it. If 1360x768 is your TV's normal/highest resolution that is the best you will get from it.

Out of curiosity do you have the model number of the TV and I can check for you? Thanks - the tv is a samsung LN32B360, two years OLD. The picture really isn't that bad but it is not as good as satelite tv.
My next pc will have an HDMI connection.Yup, that resolution is the best one for your TV

Quote

Features
Like most entry-level LCD TVs, the Samsung has a native resolution of 1,366x768 pixels, or 720p, as opposed to the 1080p resolution found on step-up models.

Solve : can i mix a different specs of ram memory card?

Good day to all. I just want to ask if it is possible if i mix SAMSUNG 512MB 677MHz DDR2 PC2-5300 SoDimm with a Samsung 1GB, DDR II SDRAM, 800MHz, soDIMM. My laptop have 2 512 MB of the first, i just want to MAKE it 1.5 G if it is possible. I just want to make sure before i PUT the 1 gig RAM to my laptop. Tnx .... SOMETIMES this will work...sometimes not.
If sppeds are mixed all the RAM will run at the slowest speed installed...
I'd recommend visiting Crucial.com and running the online scanner.
This will tell you exactly what type, speed and capacity of RAM your PC supports...
Personally with the price of RAM these days i'd buy all new and max it out...but that's me.

Solve : LED Printer Drum Avg Lifespan? ~150 b/w A4 pages - dies within 5 mths?

Answer»

So I purchased a Brother LED Printer in May, and recently the Drum died after about 5 months (May > OCT).

My office uses the printer often (maybe 50 pages in the morning, 100 pages in the noon/afternoon - Mon to Sat) but, I don't think, excessively. So it comes as a surprise that the Drum has 'died' after only 5 months and will cost us about 60% of the initial cost of the printer to replace.

Does that sound correct? I'm a little leery of this and I don't want this to be an endless cycle of expensive drums. Googling it does not really bring up any relevant info.

Thanks in advance for any useful answers or links.Brother use to be good quality 20+ years ago with their typewriters etc, but when it comes to modern printers for business/volume printing, I go for HP Business Class Printers. Brother makes inexpensive Laser/LED Printers and they are not meant for high volume, but instead home users that dont print reams at a time. Even Panasonic use to be a quality name, and these days their Printers are junk for high volume use. Printers that I have had good luck with for volume printing are Xerox, HP, Canon, and Kyocera. These printers of these brands and business class printers will crank out 50,000+ pages before requiring maintenance kit etc if regular copy/print paper is run in them. But they come at a price compared to say Brother which can be $100 to $250 depending on model, whereas the business class printers are usually $400+ depending on model and features. Even when maintenance indicator trips on these, if you want to if the print quality is still good, you can reset the counter and continue to print until there is a quality issue. I have SEEN 130,000 printed pages before before a fuser unit acted up, and it could have gone further if a piece of scotch tape didnt make its way to its surface which must have been attached to a sheet to be printed.. ALSO the business class printers can also be leased sometimes in which the provider covers repairs and upkeep as part of the agreement. We leased from HP and Xerox before and the local service provider was great.Quote from: keyven on October 18, 2012, 09:10:21 PM

(maybe 50 pages in the morning, 100 pages in the noon/afternoon - Mon to Sat)

You get what you pay for. If you make a cheap printer (whatever brand) do heavy work, it WEARS out quicker than you want and uses up toner and replaceable items such as drums faster. Taking 5 months = 20 weeks, that means the pages printed are 150 x 6 x 20 = 18,000 pages. You do not say what the model is, but Googling "Brother LED printer drum life" showed me that the drum in the Brother HI-1470N printer has a 20,000-page lifespan. There are many factors that determine the actual drum life, such as the temperature, humidity, type of paper, and duty cycle. Duty cycle is usually measured as the number of pages printed each month. Cheaper printers have a lower duty cycle. You don't want to get close to the duty cycle. You have been printing about 3,000 to 4,000 pages a month. To get a printer that will suit this workload, look for one with a duty cycle above that. One with a 10,000 page monthly duty cycle and a 50,000 page drum life means you won't be stressing it and the drum will probably last a year or more.

Solve : Can this be fixed??

Answer»

So chkdsk still will not run using all 3 methods ? ?

If not your drive is close to dead.Really? What should I do? Does this mean I need a new computer? Because I was just thinking that while I can still access my important files (music, pictures, etc.) I should get an EXTERNAL hard drive (I think that's what it's called. Passport?) and put everything there.

When I was reinstalling Vista to fix the start up, there was a main option to install the whole thing and it SAID CURRENT files and settings won't be saved. Did that mean it would have WIPED my whole computer clean? That's what I THOUGHT it meant so I didn't try that option because I didn't want EVERYTHING deleted. Yes...that's what it would have done...everything would be gone so you chose well...
Just thought of an alternative...find out what make the HDD is and DLoad and run the Free diagnostics from their site...follow the guide for creating a bootable CD to run it as it's the most accurate check...

Solve : Wireless range extender?

Hello! So I'm trying to get my girlfriend a good birthday present. Currently, she doesn't have internet at home. She has a laptop and borrows her neighbors internet (with PERMISSION), however, her laptop doesn't have very good wireless range. I want to get her a USB wireless card or extender to get her more range. Can someone recommend me one to pick up on Newegg or somewhere similar? Also, the cheaper the better. Thanks much in advance!I don't think that extenders work in the way that you imagine. A wireless extender or repeater is a device that you put in a place where there is a good signal, and it re transmits the signal over an extended AREA. They don't turn a weak signal into a strong one. I think you would need to buy the neighbor the extender.
Why not just get her a good connection at the house from a local ISP ? ?
It's the gift that keeps on giving...Actually i used a standalone add on wi-fi antennae receiver for a NUMBER of years on a Toshiba laptop that had a built in wi-fi capability. I found my reception range and strength considerably improved over the built in. This is the one i used.

Solve : PC problem...?

help, i tried to run an old pc (well, not that old AMD 64 athlon) I CLEANED it (inside and out) and when I turn it on, it says "using partition 0, partition 3 loading err r" and it will not BOOT in OS... can anybody have an idea? I don't know what the OS INSTALLED in the HD...Guessing this computer was saved from someone else throwing it away? I'd start with booting it off of a Live Linux CD such as Knoppix or even use Ubuntu. Boot off of the CD and then use the utilities contained within this Linux OS to diagnose further to try to get the original OS back up and running. Otherwise if you can locate a key label on the outside of the computer which is a Microsoft Key Label you will have a good idea of what Operating SYSTEM came with the system originally and then be able to acquire a OEM copy of the matching OS on disc and then install clean (maybe) to the hard drive if the hard drive is not crashed beyond repair. Then if it installs successfully you can use the key on the computer itself to activate against windows if Windows XP or newer and have a good working computer maybe.ok THANKS i will try..

Solve : Maximum resolution 1280 by 800???

Answer»

Hi, I've just come back to a laptop I haven't used in awhile and I know this system is a pretty crappy but I was sure that it used to run at higher display resolution than it does.
I can only select a maximum display of 1280 x 800, is this normal for this card?

(Drivers are out of DATE but I updated and it made no change so rolled it back again)

Really? Because this model had serious over heating issues that HP refused to address, or redress once they knew about it. So unless this one was designed to shut down every 10 minutes, it wasn't very OK at what it was designed for. I have to have a fan tray under it constantly when using it... which is loud. I'd be very glad to have a Bentley, but I wouldn't be pissed off if someone hated their's because it was always breaking down.Took him 4 months to think that up. In that time, I found out that two of my friends have this model laptop, and both report that they have worked fine since purchase, and one is going to give his to me when he buys a new one after Christmas, in exchange for a DVD player and a case of not very expensive wine.

###1280x800 is the resolution of my laptop and I'm happy with it. I have had overheating issues on one occasion but that was mitigated with a little common sense (not resting it on upholstery when using it for Minecraft being a good start).

That said my laptop isn't an HP. Don't have personal experience with them.

Nonetheless It's a tad sad when you think about it- back when laptops cost UPWARDS of 8 thousand dollars, the feature list was so tiny, and everybody was impressed with it. Now people pay a fraction of the price for a system that is massively more powerful than those systems and don't hesitate to find as many flaws as possible.

eg. I have(or had, rather, finally failed) a Thinkpad 755 CDV. Pentium 75Mhz, 8MB of RAM, 1.5GB Hard disk, 640x480 Active Matrix screen. Cost: $8,680. My Satellite L300 cost me 700 dollars, has 512 times as much memory(4GB), a 2.00Ghz Dual Core processor, a 250GB Hard disk, and a 1280x800 display, for $699. I'm not about to complain too much about it given the massive change in what money can buy in terms of hardware.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzLRdRxz9mcI'm thinking an astute point was missed...Quote from: Shandy on October 19, 2012, 02:34:36 PM

Before you order one, why not test the hard drive with the WD DATA Lifeguard Utility?
http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=612&sid=3
Since it won't boot, you NEED the ISO version to create a bootable CD.
http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=612&sid=30&lang=en

Macrium restore is not difficult, I've done it once with the bootable CD you create from Macrium program.

Well, I don't have a way to create a bootable CD and my hard drive is 6 years old. Plus, I did run the HP diagnostic in an F10 recovery and the hard drive failed the Smart Test. At this point I would rather get a NEW one and be done with it.Beautiful fall afternoon in SE PA!

Ordered my new hard drive from Amazon this morning. In the meantime, I was THINKING. What if my old hard drive is ok but just has some corrupted files or malware? Could I format it (I think that means erase everything) and then transfer the Macrium image from my external hard drive to the formatted internal hard drive? If it fails SMART now, it will be dead soon.

Solve : HELP NO SOUND?

Answer»

Can any help or OFFER some kind of advice.

I recently got myself a new PC, but unfortunately it doesn’t have a HDMI connection with it.

I wanted to watch movies from the PC via my TV.

So with the little knowledge I have over these MATTERS, I got a DVI MALE TO HDMI FEMALE ADAPTER CONNECTOR CONVERTER, but realised that it only streams video not sound, so then got a 3.5mm Jack to 2 x RCA Twin Phono Cable Lead GOLD PC TV Audio, but still got no sound. Is there something I’m not doing or got the wrong BITS of parts for this too work.

Thanks to anyone in advance
1. So you are getting vision on the TV but no sound? Is that RIGHT?

2. Can you hear the sound through the PC speakers?

3. Are you plugging the 2 x RCA Phono plugs into the right sockets on the TV?

4. Into which socket on the PC are you plugging the 3.5 mm jack plug?

yes tv picture no sound.

I get sound when i use the PC speakers, but then i use the seperate audio cable i get nothing.

yes plugging the right coloured 2 x rca phono in TV and the as for plugging the 3.5mm plug, i'm plugging that into the same as the pc speakersTry plugging jack into PC HEADPHONE socket; check Windows volume control settings in Volume Mixer; check TV volume control settings; try connecting audio lead jack to mp3 player and see if music comes from TV speakers.

Solve : Thumb Drive - Performance degraded after format?

Answer»

I should probably just take a hammer to this and get a newer bigger one, but figured I'd run this past you all. I have a THUMB Drive that is a 1GB that use to be fast at read/writes and after the last quick format it slowed to a CRAWL when writing to the device.

Prior to this last quick format this thumb drive had been set up with Fedora 16 using a PenDrive utility to create a bootable USB stick with the Fedora 16 ISO.

I no longer needed Fedora 16 on this thumb drive and so I performed a quick format of it.

I then performed a full format of this device thinking that the quick format left something behind but it was still slow, and took a couple minutes for format it in which I have never had a thumb drive take like 3 minutes to format, especially a small capacity 1GB. Anyone know of a software tool etc to check thumbdrives for corruption. When copying data to it and comparing, the data is an exact match, its just that the speed of this device has drastically declined. I tried this thumb drive in 3 different computers 2 with Windows 7 and another with Windows XP and they all show the same symptoms with this device. I was thinking maybe it was driver related somehow, but now it looks to be hardware related so I posted it here to see if there is some sort of tool out there to recondition/diagnose flash memory.

Also to add to this I have another 1GB stick that runs fast, and that one shows like 987MB available, while this stick that is performing slower shows just 963MB available after format.. Could this indicate Bad Memory Blocks ( Shrinkage of storage )? I have heard that SSD's shrink as cells die, wasnt sure if Flash Sticks also shrink?Did you format it NTFS ? ?
If so that would account for the longer format time...and the capacity difference. The native format for a flash drive is FAT-32. Knowing that, I've never tried to format a FD to any other format.

Try re-formatting the FD to FAT-32 and see if the speed comes back.

Just a thought!

Quote from: TheShadow on September 22, 2012, 07:22:51 AM

The native format for a flash drive is FAT-32.

Flash drives don't have a "native format". Flash drives can be bought unformatted or formatted. Ones that come pre-formatted tend to use FAT, mainly because it (a) offers the widest platform compatibility, (b) does not require a license fee to be paid to Microsoft like NTFS does. Even among drives using FAT family FILE systems, there are variations. For example one big maker, Sandisk, supplies flash drives preformatted with FAT for 2GB or lower capacity, FAT32 for 4GB to 32GB capacities, and exFAT for 64GB or higher capacities, but flash drives, like hard drives and SSDs, don't care what file system you lay down on them. I think, from the OP's description, that the flash drive in question is starting to go bad. The memory cells in flash devices have a limited number of read/write cycles, and also the controller can go bad.

All my pen drives are formatted with NTFS and they all runnning at acceptable real-world speeds, which are never what the makers quote in their publicity.Quote

Agreed.
I remember it being advised against using NTFS on flash drives 'cause the read /writes from indexing would wear them out faster...

I don't think removable drives are indexed by default in Windows 7, and in XP you can disable it.

I may have used the wrong terminology...it's not the OS...it's how the file system itself acts...i'll look it up.

Ah I see. I did some checking and this is what I believe is the case: The fact that NTFS is a journaling file system does involve a certain number of write operations whe files are created, deleted, or changed. These are the ones that wear out flash memory, read operations don't. They happen with FAT too though. Thus FAT was better suited for ‘dumb’ first generation flash drives. However flash memory designers were forced to address the issue and later generations incorporate "wear levelling". That being said, there probably are other reasons to use FAT with a thumb drive, for example many DVD and media players will play files off a USB drive but only FAT.

Checked the thumb drive and its Fat32. Sorry about delay in getting back to this. But good to see lots of info shared on this matter. I ran a test using same computer, same data, and writing from thumb drive to same X: drive which is my internal SSD for fastest usb thumb drive to physical hard drive transfer. I am thinking this thumb drive is showing its age. Still functions but its way slow. Also saw complaints on google about this brand not being a top performer for speed.

Its a [ Micro Center ] 1GB which I bought as part of a Linux Bootable Distro purchase for like $10 a few years ago. Since then i have learned how to use Universal USB Installer 1.8.7.2 from pendrivelinux.com to make my own. Used this tool to install Fedora 16 to it about a year or so ago. But since then installed a larger distro to a 4GB thumbdrive.

I attached a speed comparison between this probably worn out 1GB Micro Center and 1GB Kingston transferring same data to same X:\ drive which is my SSD thru USB 2.0.

I tried dumping partition and making it NTFS and then dumping partition and making it Fat32 again. No increase in speed.

I know that with hard drives you can view information to know how many bad sectors have been flagged as bad, but not sure if there is such a thing for flash ( thumb drives ). I was thinking it might have been loss due to some sort of corruption, but I am thinking its shrunken due to dead cells maybe since the Micro Center is smaller than the Kingston when formatted, and the Kingston is nice and fast.

I am slightly confused about why you are taking any trouble over this, except maybe healthy curiosity of course. I don't know if you have seen flash drive prices lately, but in England where I live, 1 GB drives dropped off the radar some time ago. The cheapest smallest ones now seem to be 2 GB but 4 GB are taking that slot rapidly. I can walk into a store here and get a no-name 4 GB drive for 3.99 British pounds ($6.48 USD) and cheaper on the web. For comparison a pint of beer in a pub costs around 3.00 pounds, and a Big Mac is around 2.29 pounds. For less than that $10 you spent a few years ago (and even a few years is a long time in the context of flash drive technology generations) I can walk in a store and pick up an 8 GB drive.

What I am trying to say is that a bad pen/flash drive is a throw-away-and-forget thing, just like a scratched CD-RW or a DAMAGED floppy. If you had valuable data on it, bad luck.

Quote
I know that with hard drives you can view information to know how many bad sectors have been flagged as bad, but not sure if there is such a thing for flash ( thumb drives ).

Well, I use a program (by a Ukrainian guy called Mikhail Cherkes) called Check Flash. It has identified bad blocks on drives for me. Be warned, a full check on a large (4 GB+) drive can take some time, one or more hours, and some checks involve overwriting every block on the drive, which would destroy any data partitions on there. It is a portable app, that is, you just unzip and run it. Be very very careful about choosing the right drive letter, because it is quite capable of nuking a whole hard drive of data in the time it takes to say "OH No!".

You can get it here

http://www.mikelab.kiev.ua/PROGRAMS/ChkFlsh.zip

or here

http://www.computerbild.de/download/Check-Flash-6750982.html?dl=1

Thanks Salmon for that tool. I was looking for a tool like this and all I found was Hard Drive testers that displayed smart data etc which thumb drives dont have. Going to use this tool now to check out my thumb drive.

You are correct at the statement of Quote
except maybe healthy curiosity of course
in relation to taking the trouble with this. I can just take a hammer to this thumb drive and pick up a new 4GB for around $4, or 8GB for $6 these days. But figured instead of just destroying the flash drive why not figure out why its not functioning up to speed.

If something isnt working properly I am the type of person who has to find out why, even if in most peoples eyes it may be a waste of time since it can be replaced so inexpensively. Thanks for helping out on this subject even if it might be seen as a waste of time in some peoples eyes.

I think even if I were rich, which I am not, and a computer had a problem, I wouldnt just throw it away if it didnt boot and get a new one. I'd be diagnosing and fixing it...lol Thats Just Me!

Off to use that tool on that drive and see what it shows.

Solve : COIN BOXED PC SET UP?

Answer»

Hi! I'm new here. I just want to know how i can set up a coin box on my pc. Coin boxed PC internet is now
gaining popularity here in the Philippines so i want to know how it is done.

Can someone post a diagram how?
Thanks a lot. More power to all.If you are referring to Pay-Per-USE computing there are a number of ways to do this. At an internet cafe that I helped get started out, I gave them a cheap coin-op solution to 25 cents per 10 minutes of use. They had a very tight budget and so I couldnt go with a hardware/software interface. My quick solution was to draw up a circuit that had a timer that latched a SPST relay, used an arcades coin-op mechanism to trigger acceptance of only quarters, and wire the relay to the push button of a 2-port KVM. This way if they were in the middle of typing an e-mail and the relay de-energized the mouse and keyboard controls would be lost until another quarter was inserted for another 10 minutes use. Once another quarter accepted they were given control to the computer again. The only hardware accessable to user was display, keyboard, mouse, and coin op in a wooden box. Only drawback to this cheap design is that it can not tally up multiple quarters inserted to add say 30 minutes use for 75 cents. There is a large LABEL near it stating only insert 1 quarter for 10 minute intervals at a time. He also is able to give people bringing their own laptops internet for $1 an hour where he has to manually kick them after 1 hr. Most people dont use the full hour. His REVENUES are mainly selling snacks, drinks, sandwiches, etc. But the 6 computers he has that are coin-ops are very popular.

The original plan I came up with for these coin ops were going to be to enable/disable the internet connection to these PC's, BUT it was better to keep the internet connection and just remove keyboard/mouse access, so that upon the customer inserting another quarter they were right back where they were as if the computer remained idle, vs going offline in which they are losing time by having to re-navigate back to where they were.

So if you have someone locally who is good with electronics to modify a KVM to work with a coin-op mechanism and a timer circuit. Thats the direction I'd go to save money.

One last thing that I told him to implement was to reimage the systems on a regular basis. So he bought 6 copies of Ghost and wipes them clean regularly to avoid anyone seeding them with anything bad. He also has a statement on the walls stating No Liability under Terms and Conditions of Internet Cafe Internet Usage. Use at your own risk! This is also listed on the background bmp on the computers as well as SCREENSAVERS.*Also to note... if using this method its best to use a KVM that uses the Scroll Lock X 2 and ESC Key combination as Hot Keys to switch between PC1 and PC2. Super Glue the Scroll Lock key so it no longer can be pressed down to cheat the Coin-Op or remove the key and remove the center post of it and glue it back to keyboard so that it no longer functions. My friend has some out of date computers idling as PC2 with message on screen advertising the Coin-Op service and Insert Coin to Continue. PC1 is the actual PC that has internet access and user account that does not allow downloads etc, as well as has antivirus present as well to avoid tampering of systems or seeding them with keyloggers or other hacks.ic.. thanks..

Solve : SSD's are flaky??

Answer»

thinkin of gettin an SSD for my boot drive but a friend said they crash a lot and are not that reliable

is this true?

which ones are the most reliable?Don't listen to your friend. Crucial, OCZ and Samsung are good makes.I own 2 OCZ's 60GB and a 90GB, and NO Problems! As with any technology, there were problems when first produced. The last year or so has placed SSD's on par with traditional hard drive reliability, if not surpassing the reliability of platter-based hard drives. Size will continue to grow, and cost, as far as is known, will continue to reduce.Yeah, I've never had a problem with one failing either and I've had about 5 installed throughout several different systems. At this POINT I find the ADATA brand to be the best in terms of cost/QUALITY. Of course the OCZ's are superior, but if you're looking for something cheap that is still good quality, go with the ADATA.I have the OCZ Vertex 3 120GB and I love it. Never had an issue post instllation. Win 7 installed from a high quality usb stick in 5 mins, drivers DONE from the mobo CD in a few more and it was ready to go. Here where I work we have installed several in computers, we have had 2 out of over 150 installed fail within the warranty period this year. We have had 7 out of ~200 drives fail this year in warranty. As with any PC part it is always possible to receive a DOA product. This can be remedied with a return. The benefit to having SSDs as small as they are as you can easily keep an image of the drive on a 2TB HDD and still have plenty of room for data, and you can restore from the image if WINDOWS breaks. Some are flaky, some are not. Drives with Sandforce controllers (most OCZs, newer Intels, Sandisks, Adata, most Corsairs) are less reliable then others and do not meet their advertised specifications in the real world.
Personally, I would only buy a Samsung or Crucial drive out of the drives available. Happily, they're also the fastest real-world drives, and don't carry much of a premium over their competitors.I was under the impression OCZ dumped the Sandforce controllers early on because of issues...Found It...You're quite correct, a mistake on my part. The OCZ 4 series drives don't use Sandforce controllers, no, and from what I've heard the reliability seems to have improved. I think I have just been discounting OCZ drives entirely for so long due to their all-SF lineup that I forgot they'd changed for their new drives, so I do apologise. I would still personally only buy Samsung or Crucial though as I don't like dealing with OCZ CS.They also sold off their RAM division to concentrate solely on SSD HDD's...
That's a move someone who WANTS to be the Industry leader would make...Mhm, I was glad when they did that, meant I didn't have to deal with OCZ Gold any longer *shudder*. They have also moved into the enterprise SSD sector a lot further than they used to, though I haven't had a chance to have a play with any of their recent enterprise drives.
I'll watch and wait but it'd take a lot for me to change my mind about them as a company after the dealings I've had with them.Understood...
I bought loads of their RAM over the years...only had 4 RMA's and they were expedited very quickly...
Sorry to hear your experience was the opposite...I had no problems with their DDR and DDR2, it was their later DDR3 that seemed to go to pot, nothing but trouble for me.
I think it very much depends where in the world you are, from what I can gather the RMA experience is much better over in the US than it is in Europe. The only products I had to return personally, I returned through my old workplace which went very smoothly, and indeed their returns to OCZ seemed fine. It was more their business practices and reps that soured me on OCZ, that and the Sandforce debacle.

Answer» HTTP://www.apple.com/ipad/It comes as no surprise that this THREAD is yet another complete waste of CH server space and cycles posted by Ryuk, Squall, Slade, or whatever name he chooses to spam us with. SINCE it is posted in the Hardware Support FORUM, I have no hesitation whatsoever in locking it - just the latest in a long list of his locked threads.

Ryuk - you are on notice. If you don't stop this nonsense your posting privileges will (again) be RESTRICTED or blocked.

Solve : Display not working.?

Answer»

Hi,
I've just made a new system with one of AMD's "APU" processors. I was running it for awhile without a graphics card and every thing was great (actually it was really good with just the embedded GPU). Still I wanted to improve on my FPS with full settings on GW2, so as suggested by the packing on my A10 5800K chip, I purchased a HD 6670 graphics card and ran it in Crossfire with the the embedded GPU. The system now works great, and the system isn't overclocked at all, however, every time I switch my system on, the display fails to initialize and I have to turn off and on again, sometimes a few times, to get the display to come up. I've tried this over HDMI and DVI and it's still the same. Any suggestions?

Monitor is a Samsung S23A350H

Ah, I'm using the following hardware:

Gigabyte F2A85X-UP4 AMD A85X Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 ATX Motherboard

AMD A10-5800K Black Edition 3.80GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Quad Core Processor (AD580KWOHJBOX)

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 32MB Cache - OEM (ST31000524AS)

Samsung Green (MV-3V4G3D/US) 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz 30nm Dual Channel Kit

Corsair Builder Series CX 600W V2 '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020048-UK)and:

Asus HD 6670 SILENT EDITION 1024MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Graphics CardI don't think it's a problem with the display... I've tried it on another monitor and have the same issue. Also, I've just noticed that when the issue occurs, the motherboard error code panel doesn't light up. The fans on the system turn on, but I have no IDEA whether any thing else does. I think the system might not be posting at all when it happens, which is why the display doesn't work. Oh grimmer, it's weird that the fans power up, because they're connected to the motherboard, yet the motherboard doesn't light up. The only light that comes up on the motherboard is the on board power button, which is permanently on anyway.
Any ideas?... I didn't have the issue while just using the APU, but that could be coincidental, or it could be a power supply problem maybe? I would have thought 600w would be plenty though?

Solve : ZIP drive?

Answer»

I am in NEED of a cable that can connect my ZIP drive (external ZIP 250, parallel port) through a USB connection, since my HP Pavilion does not have a parallel printer port. I find several parallel to USB cables for PRINTERS, but most REVIEWS say they don't work with external drives. Is it possible to connect one of these to a machine running Vista? Thanks.Hi

First idea would be to add a PCI parallel port card if it is a desktop PC.

Or find a computer you can connect the zip drive to and transfer the disks to cd or a pendrive

Because of the way the IOMEGA driver accesses the parallel port you need a physical port not a USB to parallel adapter

Solve : HP LED unusual display issue?

Answer»

I am working on a HP g7-1167dx WINDOWS 7 Home Premium. The LED display backlight keeps TURNING off after a few hours with images. External monitor ok. No inverter on this computer, replaced complete LED SCREEN twice and still same problem. Reinstalled drivers and updated BIOS as well. Only thing I can think of is a bad cable from the motherboard to the screen but is just real random when it turns off. Screen will light up by itself after 5 - 10 minutes, usually on restart will b fine. Any help would b greatly appreciated. No errors detected. Running out of ideas. The cable would be the next thing to test

Solve : Laptop power adaptor?

Answer»

I bought my laptop about a year ago, and apart from several grievances it WORKS. But my adapter recently stopped working so I ordered a replacement for it, another was sent matching the correct power specs of 19.5V and 7.7A. This adapter was faulty and a replacement was issued, HOWEVER the power specifications are now 19V and 7.9A. I tried it anyway and the laptop will receive charge from it but now the thing can't boot the SSD.
I was WONDERING if the change of adapter COULD have made this happen or some other reason.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, thanksSome other reason. It's possible, though unlikely, that the adapter is to blame. A lot of the cheaper off-brand adapters (mainly from China and southeast asia) are unreliable and can actually fry your computer though what you're describing sounds a little different. Are you buying brand-name adapters? No i'm not its one bought from justlaptops.comGeneric adapters and those bought on a low budget will ruin a laptop,Quote from: mannsupreme on October 17, 2012, 11:00:29 AM

No i'm not its one bought from justlaptops.com

There ya go. I took a cursory look at the site and it's all cheap "compatible with" adapters which are not from the original manufacturer. NEXT time try getting a Genuine OEM/brand name adapter used off eBay if you're looking to save some money.

Solve : Xerox?

Answer»

On the Touch Screen of the printer should appear 5 functions and only appear 3 (Copy, email, fax), when they should appear in addition to the three mentioned, network scanning and Scan. Mail / mailbox
How to do or what to do with all the menus assets?

Just ONE more: To send e-mail must be connected to a print server or just connect it to the switch to communicate with fixed ip? (Since we do not have the company's own SERVERS) I think it must have print server.Model # PLEASE ?WorkCenterproC 123Model # is out of production...
JUDGING by your issues it sounds LIKE it was setup as a network printer...but you don't need it to be.
I'd suggest uninstalling it in Device Manager...then remove the software via ADD/Remove Programs...then re-booting and re-installing it fresh. We have connected to a switch. But in manual it have 5 options in menu, but we only have 3!
Does anyone knows how to put it right?
Another one: i can access to xerox web configuration but it asks login and password to change anything.

Anyone?
