Solve : DSL and Router Problem?

Answer»

I have a Verizon supplied Westell 6100 and a Linksys BEFSR41 EtherFast Cable/DSL Router. I've searched Goole, and followd the instructions posted by Verizon, but I cannot get the Internet IP to be assigned to the Router instead of the Westell. I've set ithe modem to Bridge mode and turned of DHCP, I've even tried PPPoE, but the modem says it does not detect a PPPoE connection so it may be that Verizon does not use it, I wouldn't know. Anyone EXPERIENCE a similar problem and come across a solution?I'm not familiar with the Westell 6100 modem but some of these devices come enabled with DHCP as a combo modem/router. Is that the case here? If so, don't use the Linksys router but instead use a hub or switch as you don't need the router.

Alan <>< Go here. http://www.broadbandreports.com/ No broadband problem too BIG for these folks.

In the forums, you'll probably be able to talk directly with Verizon techs.

I have AT&T DSL. When adding a wireless router to my SYSTEM, I found it worked best to leave the modem settings alone (original)and let the modem manage the connection. Setting the router to a more passive mode (DHCP)

I lucked out and my wireless network is working great without my having to learn a great deal about it!!!No, it's not the DHCP setting.. I know about that, that's what I was using with my switch. But, that modem- Gateway device- has not DMZ setting so therefore, I could not host a server using it. I did however finaly get it to play nice with my Linksys router so now it gets the internet IP so I can use it's DMZ setting. Thanks though.

Solve : Dual Monitors?

Answer»

I got a NEW computer and run two monitors from a Nvidia double port video card. Card has worked well on a previous computer. Newer computer has 'big time' processor speed and memory. However I can't put up more than one page/site at a time. With one up, any desktop icon I click to put something else up on the second screen, just knocks the first one off. If I minimize the first screen to the Task Bar, and click a second site, it just replaces it in the Task Bar. I did not have this problem before, so I'm hoping its something I need to tweak on the new computer. Any thoughts ?I WOULD check the video settings in Control Panel...did you re-install the vid card drivers in the new machine ? ?

patio. 8-)No. Of course not. That would have been the right thing to do. And I don't think I have the CD. Have moved twice, and things get lost. Now what ?Contact the manufacturer and or visit their website and dload the correct drivers for that vid card.
You will need the exact MODEL # off of the card as there have been a gazillion vid cards produced ...using the wrong drivers can result in no video at alll which come to think of it i'm suprised that's not what you have right now.

Good Luck.

patio. 8-)Got someone SMARTER than me (they're a few) to DL the drivers. All is well. THX. B.Excellent ! And thanx for letting US know how it went...

Solve : Is it the Monitor?....the Video Card??

Answer»

I have recently gotten a new monitor for my computer. Previously, all the games i used would work. However, now when i start the games up the monitor goes black and says no input. However, i can still hear the game music and sfx coming out of the speakers. The monitor i have now is a princeton monitor and the video card is ATI Radeon9000, i seriously doubt its the video card. Any suggestions as to what i can do to fix this monitor problem?First, MAKE sure your resolution is set to at least 1024 x 768 with the previous monitor if that is an LCD, If no joy or this is not an LCD, TRY the new monitor on another computer. If it doesn't work, then you should have it replaced. The monitor cannot cope with the resolution/frequency it is being sent. Change the configuration of the resolution for the game(s) in question. No Dice. The monitor reads No Input. It's not the card. I have tried changing the res. of the game. How do i change the frequency. I think it has to do with the monitor just not recieving the video. The instructions vary with the game. Your games may not have a frequency control, but must have a resolution control. Take it down to 800x600. If that works, gradually INCREASE from there. If it doesn't work, go down to 640x480.Please see reply #1. Why do you think that will help, G? Windows is evidentally working fine; games aren't. So it's probably a DirectX MODE called by the game according to the game's setup that is causing the monitor to lose sync...?My bad. Let me clarigy. The machine works totally normally with the new monitor on everything except games? All games? What games? You have all the updates from the manufacturer's sites involved?

We'll await further input.

Solve : iomega cd-rw on 98?

Answer»

i cannot get my computer to "see" my drive. i installed the oem software for it and nothing, i also tried manually installing the ppa3.inf files and it would only install guest.inf i need to get it installed to burn a disk for my system. can anyone out there help or give any advice? What is the model for the drive? Is it jumpered correctly? Is it seen correctly in the computer BIOS? Is it seen correctly in Window? Have you installed the burning software that came with the drive, or what are you using?i have installed it using the iomega cd-rom and the computer isn't seeing it. it's a usb drive and i'm getting these errors:

in device manager, "iomega win98 usb disk controllers" has an exclamation mark next to it. so does "pci serial controller"

i have also tried installing the ppa3.inf file and it didn't work either. Quote

The serial controller is a modem. I would remove it physically IF you are not using it until we get this resolved. Delete the device and the iomega drive in Device Manager and reboot. When you restart does this change anything?

Not surprising. That should not work anyway.okay, i did all that, and nothing still. i'm getting frustrated.Do other USB items function normally? Is it basic USB 1.1 from the MOTHERBOARD or an ADD on card? Are there any caveats from the IOMEGA SITE regarding USB 1.1 systems if that is what it is? Have you contacted them? Is it a new drive? Can you test it on another MACHINE?

Solve : my hp ze5468cl laptop reads DVDs but not CDs?

Answer»

What is wrong with my DRIVE and how do i fix it?The psychics are off today. PLEASE post a LOT of information about the SYSTEM, when it started, and much more. See below.I've seen things like that happen when some FILES were corrupted from installing / removing certain software, etc...

Could be that the drive is damaged.

No way to really know if the drive is working properly without reinstalling Windows and seeing if it works then.

Does it not read data CDs?... or is this just a problem playing audio CDs? If it's just audio, you may just need to set up a media player.

Solve : AIM File Transfer?

Answer»

i am currently trying to transfer files on AIM.
my friend can connect to me and take my files just fine, but i cant not connect to him on any one of my three computers. i am running xp home on the one DIRECTLY connected to my wireless router.
xp media edition thru wifi
and ME thru a wifi connection as well.

i am using a linksys wireless G router.

i can not connect through any of these computers.
is there a certain setting that i need to configure on any of the computers.
i have turned off my firewalls to try to connect, as well as he has turned them off as well... but still, only he can connect to me.

anyone have an ideas as to what else i need to do to be able to configure my router/computers to be able to get files from his computer.....You have to set up port forwarding on your router for some internet applications to run (AIM IS one of them). Log into your router. Look for "port forwarding" or "special applications" in the menu.

Search the internet for "AIM port forwarding" to find out what port or ports you need to forward. I found this. Don't know if this is relevant to the newest version of AIM or not.

http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n100495.asp

Some nicer routers will even have common applications listed. You just select one and the port forwarding settings will be set automatically.

Good luck!!!ok.
i tried to go step by step.. and anytime i enter my current ip address.. it says an error message, but when i leave the ip address to blank it never saves anything though the SCREEN pops up that it saved.

i did "ipconfig" on the main computer and the wireless laptop and they both have the same (obviously) and not sure how i can set up the linksys router to allow me to connect to my buddies computer.

any other options?Other options?

I'm not sure how to set up port forwarding on every router ever made... but that's what you need to do.

If you have the newest firmware installed and you're doing things properly it WILL work.

Try a web search for "port forwarding" including the model # of your router.

In a pinch, you could just hook a computer straight to your MODEM...Did you get a manual With it? If not, check the manufacturer's web site for this or other helpful tips specific to your HARDWARE.

Solve : Dell Inspiron DVD Player Problem?

Answer»

Hello! I am new to the forum, and am hoping someone can straighten me out. I purchased my Inspiron 8000 new several years ago, and due to a virus, had to re-install Windows ME (using the factory disc) to get everything to work again. Unfortunately, the DVD player (HLDS 8X DVD Slim-line DRN-8080B) capability had disappeared. It will try to play (shows the shift to widescreen), then reverts back to the program-initiation screen. I have downloaded and installed every Dell-provided update to the drive (firmware and drivers), plus the ME updates recommended by MicroSoft. I have also tried several different (from the factory-installed WinDVD) player trial-programs, and the only ones so far that will work are EasyDVD and RioDVD (neither of which are very flexible programs). It seems that any DVD player program that is more sophisticated (e.g., WindDVD 2000 and PowerDVD 7, both re-installed) just will not load up. I have a feeling that it is nothing more that a setting that needs to be changed, but in searching several forums, I cannot seem to find the answer. There was even one user on the Dell Forum that had the same problem, but seemingly did not get it resolved. Can anyone help? Please?!?Try reading the troubleshooting DOCUMENTATION:

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/storage/lg8080b/en/index.htm

DocThanks, Doc. Actually, that guide was pretty informative, even though it did not solve my problem. I had reinstalled the drivers, along with the firmware updates provided by Dell. The drive does function correctly to read CD-ROM, CD, CD-R, and CD-RW formats, it just will not load up a DVD movie in either WinDVD or PowerDVD. As I had MENTIONED, the EasyDVD and RioDVD trial software did allow me to play DVD movies, but I felt the programs lacked the features and video quality I WANTED. I would be willing to reformat and start over, but I am afraid that even that will not correct the condition. I would also consider upgrading from Windows ME to XP, if again, I was sure that would correct the problem. Frustrating, to say the least! Have you tried to contact Dell's technical support?
From my previous experience, they were quite helpful.
If the problem cannot be solved by yourself, they may suggest you to send the machine back for repair.Dan:

What software were you using to play DVDs before the virus mucked things up? It might be that the software you are trying to install is not compatible with Windows Me.

It might also be that the virus is still present on your system or has done some damage that has not been repaired to the Windows Me registry or to a DLL file. Have you tried copying all your IMPORTANT documents and other files to CD-R or CD-RW, reformatting the hard drive to remove the virus or any damage, and reinstalling Windows Me and all your programs?

DocMichael and Doc, thank you very much for the suggestions. With regards to Dell support folks, besides their service being expensive (since my machine is no longer in warranty), my past experiences with them has not been positive. In reloading Windows, I did use the Dell-provided ME re-installation disc for the Inspiron 8000, plus the WinDVD (manufacturer installed) disc provided with the machine. The thought that the Trojan virus did other hidden damage is certainly possible, so I guess I am probably going to NEED to wipe the hard disc and start over...aaarrrrggghhh...!!!Formatting and reinstalling WIndows every year or so can be a very good thing. A bit of an inconvenience, but it can solve a lot of problems, for a while. Doc, Michael and GX1_Man, I finally gave up trying to fix the problem, wiped the drive, and started over. I re-installed Windows ME and WinDVD (PowerDVD would not work with the earlier version of DirectX), and lo and behold, DVDs now play just fine. As Doc had suggested, the Trojan virus had apparantly done damage to files or registry entries that I was not able to correct with upgrades and simple re-installs. Anyway, thanks very much for your suggestions!Good for you and thanks for posting back. Sometimes the "fixes" are not enough and a reinstall is a lot quicker and more likely to solve the problems. The downside of forums like these is that the inevitable is sometimes postponed too long.Glad we could help. Take it easy.

Solve : 2 Graphic cards sli?

Answer»

Can somone please tell me, if there is a big increase in performance running 2 graphics cards in SLI. Does it improve 3d GAMES and stuff. I have a Geforce 7800 but was looking to get ANOTHER if there is a big ingrease in performance. Does it mean i will be able to up my resolution in games.Theoretically yes. In real life mixed results. It is an EXPENSIVE way to go. Perhaps there are other bottlenecks in your system that could be addressed.Ive Got a Geforce 7950 GX-2 which is basically 2 Cards in one Port SLI'ed

And frankly , its not that much on an improvement at the moment there are no games that Truly support SLI there are a few coming out , Like Supreme Commander, but that wont USE sli , it will actually Use each GFX card separately to give you 2 displays..

I expect that the games that COME out later this year will have better SLI results

It's even possible to grab a PCI IDE controller, that way you can even MORE drives. Just have to make sure that your PSU can handle them all.

ON TOPIC: Yes, 3 hard drives will work fine, I'm running 3 right now.Hi. I had a similar question I was going to post when I saw this topic.
I'm using three hard drives with the Trios II from Romtec. I have to shutdown and restart WHICHEVER drive I want to use, since each is set as master.
My question was going to be ; Do all drives spin while the computer is running?
And is there a way to slave two drives off the first?
Quote
Do all drives spin while the computer is running?

Yes, until they are told to spin down by the computer, either through BIOS or software.

Quote
And is there a way to slave two drives off the first?

One master and one slave per IDE channel. If you are using a PCI based card there are more options.

There is no reason I can imagine to slave two drives. If you need multiple drives you may look at SCSI as a solution.
Thanks Another option is to use external hard drives connected to USB or Firewire ports. I suppose you could add SEVERAL of those. You can even put an internal hard drive in a hard drive enclosure and plug it into a USB port to use it as an external drive.

So many options, so little cash!

Solve : monitor unlocked :D?

Answer»

ok, so, i have this old Dell Trinitron ultrascan 1000HS 17 inch monitor my NEIGHBOR gave me, she could not figure out how to unlock the monitor controls to set the monitor, unfortunatly, neither can i... the only thing i can ACCESS in the OSD is the language menu, which doesnt do me any good, it wont let me adjust a thing, if i press the auto adjust buttons (assuming thats what that button is) it just shows a KEY on the monitor... do i need the correct software to unlock this relic? my NEC that i was using died, one of the electron guns crapped out, and my magitronic just wont turn on, i have only tryed to turn it on twice, but i noticed the smell of electronic death as i call it, so i unplugged... i have to get this monitor unlocked somehow, my only other monitors are a NEC multisync 50, and some packard bell monitor, both are 15 or 13 inch monitors (not sure which) and they are both about to crap out.... the model number of my dell monitor is: D1025TMBe sure to dispose of them properly as they die.

Are you telling me YOUR Google button is broken too?

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/55341/
no i had found that, but i see nothing on a lock (i found it alittle bit after i posted this)How about a post on the Dell forum where they discuss such things?

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/Quote

How about a post on the Dell forum where they discuss such things?

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/

dell has forums...? meh... worth a try..."Locked"? That's pretty odd, for a monitor. Do all the controls on the front of the monitor apparently work (when you're changing the language settings)?

If there is a lock/unlock facility, it MIGHT be related to holding down a particular button for five seconds, or holding something down whilst you switch the monitor on. Try that, systematically. You might strike lucky.tryed alot of button combo's, nothing works, i cant change anything in the language menu... could it have been locked by some software?

EDIT: dells info on this monitor says it should be plug and play, but under my display settings it just registers as "default monitor"... i am going to try to find the drivers for it and see if that helps

EDIT (again): i am turning up NOTHING on google but dead ends, dells site DOES NOT have drivers for this over sized paper weight... if anyone has any ideas on where to find drivers for this thing, tell me... i have looked at driversguide.com, not a thing there... gonna try to update the drivers VIA windows controls (this should be interesting)Indeed that monitor is plug and play. If there is no info in the link I sent that is helpful, do try posting on their site. i managed to unlock the menu by randomly mashing buttons in the language menu, i got tired of looking at endless google nonesense, so, i got desperat and mashed buttons till it unlocked, then i was able to reset it and set it to my liking, overall, this is a good monitor, i would reccomend it (have fun unlocking it when it is in a differant language though)Quote

i DID post on there site, go no help either. which puts my faith in dells "customer support" that much lowerThat is a volunteer site, much like this one. You can't demand immediate service as it depends on who drops in, if they are interested and what their level opf expertise is. As you got the monitor free and are not the original purchaser, you can't really harp on their lack of support as they really "owe" you nothing. Paying customers with a COMPONENT under warranty move to the front of the line in phone or e-mail support:

Solve : Lcd monitor - Analog vs Digital hook up?

Answer»

I recently replace my CRT monitor with an LCD monitor. It came with an analog cable. What is NEEDED to HOOK it up to the digital i/p? Is it costly? Also, when I run DOS programs, the monitor TURNS off momentarialy and does so frequently. Is there a fix for this? I'm running Win XP Pro on a PC with an 800MHz processor. The old CRT didn't do the blinking on DOS programs as this one does.
A simple connector for digital is all that is needed. It is a DVI connector, check for one at a local store or online. Try updating your drivers, it might be having trouble trying to understand your monitor. It is just CHANGING (or trying to change) video modes when running the DOS programs. Does this happen windowed as well as full screen? Remember DOS preceeded fancy LCD's by a bit.

Solve : Will This PSU Work With My PC? -Solved-?

Hey there, this is my first post here. ^^ I'm getting a new video card for my desktop PC, I checked it out with all requirements meeting up except for the Power Supply. So I'm going to be buying a new power supply as well. However, I'm not QUITE sure how to check if the PSU itself is compatible with my current SETUP. What I'm ASKING is just if the PSU I'm looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103931 Will work or if I'll have to look elsewhere. Thanks in advance for any help. :] Sorry about all the linksChili........ You didnt say , but I assume the vid card you plan on getting will fit your MOBO ....... It's a PCI Express correct ?
As far as the PSU , the one you selected looks fine ........ have you checked to make sure it will fit into the available space ?

dl65 About the video card, the tower I'm putting it in has a PCI Express slot with the X16 lane. However, how about can I go and find the measurements for the PSU? Took a look at their official website but I'm having difficulty finding any measurements.

EDIT: Ah, nevermind about the measurements, found them :]Look at the back of your tower ...... there should be 4 screws holding in the existing PSU ....... check the measurements .

The link you posted ...shows that there is a available PCI Express slot ..... thats why I mentioned it .

dl65 Ah, okay, thanks for the help. PSU will fit.

Solve : Motherboard blown?

Hi,
For some inexplicable REASON, my motherboard started emanating little wisps of smoke when I tried to turn it on the other day. On closer inspection, 2 of what look like tiny tiny fuses had burnt out. Is this irrepairable?I mess around repairing my own electronics... Have about a 50/50 success rate ...

If I see tiny parts burning up on a mainboard, I'm THROWING it out. I don't think those things were built, or meant to be repaired by humans!!! (Outside of maybe REPLACING a BATTERY or larger capacitor that's leaking.)They were PROBABLY capacitors and there is no point and very little success trying to repair a problem like this. I hope your other components are not affected from this problem. As you have learned a smoking motherboard is NOT a good sign.Quote

Warranty ? ?

patio. 8-)Alas, no. I probably voided any warranty opening it up to add a DVD ROM drive and and a floppy drive. (this didnt cause the problem, btw.)If it was a capacitor it IS possible to sodder a new one on, if you know the exact voltage of the capacitor and what not. Similar things are done to volt mod GPU's. Also this might be a good time, not to mention excuse, to upgrade your mobo.i HIGHLY recommend NOT hardware moddifying the motherboard unless u are an experianced technician and have the appropriate tools. installing the WRONG hardware or installing it INCORRECTLY can cause a fire. Also there are MANY heat-sensitive electronic components on the motherboard. This is not a good time to try to learn soldering.

Solve : Video Card Upgrade questions?

Answer»

I have a Dell 4500 P4 1.8MHz 1G RAM and am interested in upgrading to a new video card. I don't think some of the new games will function with my card. I searched the forums for some INFO, but didn't find exactly what I am looking for.

I presently have NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420 that came w/ system. I am still unclear about power requirements of the CARDS and "clocking".

I have:

-Motherboard chipset: Intel Brookdale i845E

-External clock: 100MHz
-Maximum Clock: 3000 MHz
-Current Clock: 1800 MHz

-AGP slot (version 2.0, 64MB, speeds up to 4x)

- Core voltage 1.475 - 1.55V
- I/O voltage 1.475 - 1.55
- Typical power: 38.7 - 82W
- Maximum Power: 49 - 103W

1) I can buy an AGP or PCI card. Any advantage of one over the other?

2) Most cards require 250W. Is my system's power output good enough for 250W? How do I know? Is it in the "typical" and "maximum power" numbers above? If so, it doesn't look like Scotty can give me enough power.
If not enough power, then how could I increase it?

3) people talk about "overclocking". Is this something I need to be aware of when buying a card?

I'm not a "serious gamer"....just some flight sims and something like Battlefield 1942 or CoD is what I'm looking at.

If any other info would be helpful, please ask. Thank you for your help!Quote

AGP is faster and an 8x card is backward compatible with 4x. PCI will never be as fast. An FX5200 is CHEAP, not a great card, but should work OK.

2) Most cards require 250W. Is my system's power output good enough for 250W? If not enough power, then how could I increase it?

The high end cards require more in a power supply. Dells are proprietary is fit and in actual mounting sometimes. Check with Dell before a purchase. There are some aftermarket PSU's specifically designed for some Dell's. but not produced by Dell. A plain PCI card will use less power than a high end new AGP. What other peripherals are on there? Here is a power estimator:

http://journeysystems.com/power_supply_calculator.php

Quote
3) people talk about "overclocking". Is this something I need to be aware of when buying a card?

You can't overclock a Dell due to BIOS restrictions. The overclocked cards may be too much for the power supply. See above.

Quote
I'm not a "serious gamer"....just some flight sims and something like Battlefield 1942 or CoD is what I'm looking at.

See the specific requirements for the game from the manufacturer's web site. These days specific chip types are mentioned and this should be heeded.

The AGP card would be the way to go. The AGP slot can transfer information faster than a PCI slot, which is why they came to be. Now, AGP is being replaced by PCI Express on newer mainboards.

Not sure how much gaming performance will improve given your processor speed and the fact that your AGP slot is only 4X (newer are 8X and most video cards have 8X capability).

The power supply on your computer is somewhere around 250 WATTS. You might be able to get away with installing a card on the power efficient side.

I have one of these installed on my old computer that I've turned into a home theater computer. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102407
Pretty good "bang for the buck". No "issues" with it at all. Don't think it's a power hog. No extra CONNECTION to the power supply required.

If your computer tends to crash after installing the card, that means your power supply isn't big enough. Some of the older Dells used proprietary power supplies. I believe the one on yours has a standard ATX 20-pin plug, and is the standard physical size. I've read that the cutout on the back of your computer won't work right with power supplies that have switches. A cheap, standard ATX power supply of about 350 watts with no power switch should work for you.

You can use software to overclock your video card. Not recommended, especially without additional cooling.great information....thanks a lot!

the link to the power estimator site wouldn't come up, so I'll try that one later.

y'all have definitely helped!

Take care,
ScottKeep us posted. We like happy endings.will keep you posted when I get one!

I went to the Tiger store today and they had this:

http://shop.ati.com/product.asp?sku=2583530

The only thing I couldn't find was the power requirement.

What do you think about this one?

Thanks! What is your powersupply rated for? If it is only 100W like it looks like from your first post, you will definately need a new PSU to run that card. As you found, a 250W would probably be needed. Luckily these are rather cheap nowadays. If you go to http://www.newegg.com you can find 250-300W PSU's for around $20 or so. That is only a reccomendation though.thanks. I think my rates at 250. I haven't looked inside yet to find out. I just found this, though:

http://www.pcpowercooling.com/products/viewproduct.php?show=S41D2

This one is the only one they had that is compatible with my Dimension 4500. But I don't want to spend $120 for it, though.

I'll keep looking.

That Dell did ship with a 250w and that MAY be enough. I know the aftermarket ones are not cheap, but that one is very nice and from a quality manufacturer!

YOu could try to mount a spare standard fit ATX PSU in there just to see if it fits AND to check the pin outs. THat may be an option, and there are ways to modify one, but I wouldn't risk it for that. The ATI 9550 you're looking at is a decent card. The Sapphire 9600 Pro I recommended uses the newer ATI 9600 chip and sells for almost $25.00 less. Also uses the standard ATI drivers that can be upgraded at the ATI site. There are sometimes issues with cheaper cards that use name-brand chips. This one in very well reviewed though. Like I said, have one myself. No complaints at all. Great buy!!! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102407 Though... I won't blame you if you'd rather stick with a REAL ATI brand card and go with the 9550.

Looking at that power supply just makes me more sure the info I got is correct. If you look at the specs, you'll see that the mainboard plug is indeed 20-pin and most likely a standard ATX plug (sure looks like it in the photo). The power supply itself does look to be standard sized with no power switch. The location of the AC line cord may be an issue. You now have a photo of what you're looking for though.

Hey... While writing this, I just actually found a 350-watt power supply that came with a cheap case and looks like it would work for you. Has no power switch and the AC cord socket looks to be in the right place. Thought I probably threw it away, but here it is. It works fine. Used it for awhile with no problems. Replaced it with a silent power supply in my home theater computer. If you send me your address in a private message, I'll send it to you. Then you won't be out anything if it doesn't fit.

Solve : VIDEO ON NEW COMPUTER DOESN'T WORK?

Answer» Have a new HP COMPUTER with all programs in it. Have video camera, took videos and when hooked up to the computer and started the video program everything works but there is no audio or video on the screen where things should start is totally blank. Works on my other computer fine DO YOU ALL THINK built in video card on mother board is bad?

Can always get another one if I need to just wanted to throw this up in the air for you computer geeks.
Thanks

MarkIt could be the videocard, but you should first check the software. Check all the settings in the software. You also said that you tried it on another computer supposly with the same software, some software will disable features if you put it on another PC while having it still on the other one. That is the copyright stuff. If it's under WARRANTY and you didn't do anything unusual to it I would EXERCISE that warranty.

We don't know any details about the system, so that is the best advice based on what you have chosen to tell.Yeah give us the BASIC specs of the computer.. and then we MIGHT be able to help you.. I capture video and audio on my 1.4 GHz computer and no drop frames nothing..Do the specs of the built-in video meet the requirements of the software?

Check the HP web site for a newer video driver for your computer?

Solve : Card reader on printer?

Answer»

Hi all.

I'm trying to share the card reader on my printer with my home network but it's not working.

I have a DSL modem which is connected to an ethernet hub. I have my PC and my wifes PC connected to the hub.

I have a HP PSC 2210 USB printer connected to my PC and I have shared it so that my wife can print things through that printer. That works just fine.

The problem I am having is that I want my wife to be able to use the card reader facility on the printer. There are 4 card slot on the printer but she only wants to use one. I have shared it and I can see it as E:\ on my PC but she cant see it.

How do I set things up so she can use the slot?

Thanks in advance

DavvaBecause there is some software involved in getting the 1st computer to see the card as a drive (at least on my Canon)... You may not be able to share it.

Since she would have to go to where the printer is to insert a card anyway... Couldn't she easily copy and paste the contents of the card to a shared folder on your computer? Or install an inexpensive card reader on her computer?Have you Ever Connect your Wifes computer to a shared folder on your Computer Before , if not you may not have file sharing fully enabled on both computers

on you wife comp go to the run box in the start menu and type

\\Yourcomptername\

Then it should connect to your computer and it may ask for your user NAME and password , put them in and CLICK OK, you should then see all the shared files on the computer, or it will give you an Error or just not work

if it doesn't work you need to fix the File sharing SETTINGS on the ComputersYou may want to Turn on Simple File Sharing, i believe this removes the Password Prompt

You can find this setting on the View tab in folder options in Control panel.I haven't actually shared a folder over the network but the printer is shared and works fine. I was hoping that the card readers on the printer would be just as easy.

I have shared the drive and I'm sure this will work so I'll get her to try it again.

Thanks for all the input.

Solve : emachine trouble?

Answer»

Hi, I'm new to this forum and REALLY need some suggestions. My son and his sister in law have emachines. My sons was working fine, he moved it to another room and when he went to turn it on he said he smelt a electrical burning smell, all we have is a black screen and the computer will not turn off without unplugging it. His sister-in-laws did the same thing, only she wasn't moving hers. She was just using it, smelt a burning and the same black screen. What are your suggestions? :-?

Thank you for any help you can give me.

vasquezmomIt's pretty common for the mainboards on eMachines to have a short life. I've replaced a few for friends. Not sure if they're just low quality or if the eMachines power supplies have something to do with it. Kept the original power supply in the machines I repaired and they're still working as far as I know.

My guess would be they are both bad mainboards, particularly the one that doesn't shut off without unplugging it. All of the eMachines I repaired were like that when I GOT them. It could also be a bad power supply. The safest bet would be to try another before replacing the mainboard.

If you replace the mainboards with something similar, keep in mind that the eMachines restore disks will no longer work on the computers, so you'll need a Windows full install disk and your own software for CD burning, DVD viewing, etc... You'll probably need to download some drivers from the eMachines web site. One of the eMachines I repaired had a CD-R drive that would only write at a very low speed using any CD burning software other than the original. No driver was available on the eMachines web site to fix the problem. Did a web search and it was a common complaint.

Could probably order exact replacements from eMachines or one of their service centers. This would allow you to use the original restore disks. Cost would probably be high, if they are available at all. Dependability wouldn't likely be any BETTER.Thanks that was exactly my fear. Appreciate your time.No problem. Wish it was better NEWS. Replacing the mainboard with a similar one is no big deal if you have all the necessary software and someone who can do it. New mainboard less than $100.00

I'd OFFER to do it for you at cost, but shipping the computer back and fourth would add to the cost quite a bit. Could probably just pay the same amount to someone in your neighborhood.

Solve : help please lappy wont boot?

Answer»

my daughters laptop wont boot,,,god knows what shes done,,,,im getting the message pxe-e61 media test failure check cable,,,,,the laptop is a patriot 3070,,, i have looked in the bios andand the 1st boot device is on intel undi and available options also has cd/dvd and disabled,,,,can someone please help b4 i trash this lappy please.Hard to say...

The computer is set to try and boot from a network first. The "pxe-e61 media test failure check cable,,,,," message would be normal when the computer's not connected to a network you can boot from. The computer should probably just try to boot from the device next in line. You could try the "CD / DVD" or"disabled" options, but it really doesn't look like that's the problem. The computer's probably freezing the instant it tries to boot from the hard drive

My guess would be a badly corrupted hard drive (virus or just something caused by some touchy software, improper shutdown, etc...) or a damaged hard drive (they break pretty easily if a laptop is dropped).

Could try a FORMAT and reinstallation of Windows. Or boot to a CD that will test your hard drive. http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/cheers mate,,, im downloading it now,,,will put on disc if i can then try it in the lappy,,,,is it easy enough to do?HONESTLY, I haven't used it. I use #1-TuffTEST which is on a floppy and tests most of the hardware without using different applications. You don't have a floppy drive so... Alot of people recommend this CD. I'm ACTUALLY downloading it now also. I'm going to check it out.

I imagine some files are loaded on the hard drive to run the tests. If it's completely dead, you may not be able to run any tests.

Good luck with "Lappy"!!!Do you have a real Windows CD to reinstall/repair if needed? The "Ultimate Boot CD" SEEMS like a winner for free. A little confusing with all the stuff on it.

Was able to successfully test my Seagate and Western Digital brand drives with the IBM / Hitachi test. The Memtest memory test worked well.

Just download the self-extracting file. After double clicking the file, select where you want the ISO file to end up. Burn the ISO disk image to a disk using any CD burning software that will create a disk from an ISO image (I used Nero).I know this is being extremely FUSSY, but why "lappy"? How much harder is it to type or say "laptop"?!

Rob, that saves one whole letter. And you just wasted 26 of 'em.

Swings and roundabouts.

A lappy is just a mobile compy.moby compy

Solve : Can`t install printer?

Answer»

First off my PC seems to be uninstalling various applications of which my printer is included.

When I try to reinstall a message appears and I can`t go any further.

I guess there MUST be a serious problem but I haven`t got the knowledgr to discover it.

Attached is the screenshot of the message I`m getting.

PLEASE PLEASE can someone help??Your computer is obviously not feeling too well at all.

There's probably not going to be any fixing this without a full FORMAT and reinstall.

Maybe check your memory, CPU, and HARD drive with the tools on the "Ultimate Boot CD" first, to make sure it's not a hardware issue. http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

Have anti-virus installed? AVG Free Edition works good if you don't. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5

Solve : Can't get SATA drive up as slave?

Answer»

I have two ports on my Mother board,. Sata1, Sata2.. I have a hard drive that I pulled out of another computer that I want to get RUNNING as a slave, so I can pull some files off. I can SEE the Hard drive in the Disk manager but in has to Drive letter or partition. The drive is a WD2500JD, Its one of the older SATA drives that has jumpers on it. I moved the jumpers to every posible setting. Still I can NEVER actually view the files.

Can anyone help please thanksWhat is the file format of the drive? Is it seen correctly in the BIOS? What is the operating system? What is the model of the drive? How are the jumpers on both drives set now?

Details are important to any meaningful resolution.Quote

NTFS... BIOS is set to Auto detect Secondary HDD.... its a WD2500JD.... The primary Disk has no jumpers(Dell HDD)...The Western Digital has a jumper that are currently on pins 7-8.
Thanks. And what are those pins SUPPOSED to set it up as?Doesn't really say in the manual... (no help). I pretty much just got fed up.. and started moving the jumper around.Random behavior does not get solutions.

There is no Master Slave in SATA
its One port One Device. Period.

Those jumpers might be for data speed on your drive as well, and you may need Drivers , for some of the older drivesYea.. ok..well the drive is up and I can see it in Disk manager... but it was not assigned a drive letter... So I can't open it... Any fixes? In disk management can you not just right click and click Change Drive Letter?

Solve : Laser v. inkjet - need your advice?

Answer»

I'm just about to buy a multifunction printer (print/copy/scan/fax) and can't decide whether a laser or inkjet is best for me.

I've done a lot of research, so I'm familiar with what's available, but there's still not a clear answer for me.

I was all set to get the Canon Pixma MP830, and then I happened to READ the box on one of the replacement cartridges (each color has its own separate cartridge). It SAID you need to use up the ink in no more than 6 MONTHS. And then I had a friend tell me that the ink will eventually dry up if you don't use it up fast enough. Since I don't do a lot of printing, that's an issue for me. I haven't had to worry about that with my current printer since it's a laser (HP LaserJet 4L). To show you what I mean, my first toner cartridge lasted about 8 years. Unfortunately, that HP 4L doesn't work with my new computer (technology too old).

I like the idea of having color with the inkjet at a reasonable price. However, there is the issue of higher ongoing costs with print cartridge replacements. If I got a laser, it would be just black & white since the color lasers are way too expensive for me. That would be a higher initial cost, but much lower ongoing costs.

So I guess my biggest question is: With inkjet printers, is it true that you have to replace the cartridges at least every 6 months, even if the ink isn't used up?

Also, do you have any other thoughts on this whole issue?
I guess for me "cost is relative". What one person can't afford, another can. The other thing is...do you really need a color printer? I use my HP PhotoSmart 1115 for my color stuff (which is rare when I use it, and the ink hasn't dried up yet after almost a year). I haven't had to replace any of the ink cartridges to date.

I have a Brother HL-5040 laser and have printed several THOUSAND pages and have yet to replace the toner cartridge. If these had been printed on an ink-jet, it would not be cost effective.

So YES, you are right in that the initial output in $ is a lot, but in the long run I believe you'll save money.

Hope this helps.

Alan <>Quote

First , I would say it depends on what you wish to use the 3 in 1 for ........
after having said that , I use a cannon PIXMA IP 5000 printer , which has 5 ink cartridges ........ and I have not had any of the cartridges dry up and require replacement . Further , the printer I had before that was a HP Inkjet as WELL and never had any issue with the ink cartridges drying up ......
If ink cartridges had a life span of 5 or 6 months as your friend has suggested , then you would expect to find a best before date clearly marked on the Cannon cartridge packaging ......... there isn't any .
I have seen printers , develop clogged print heads ......... but thats a differant issue .
You might wish to check on the replacement cost of a cartridge for a laser printer ...... you may be shocked at the cost .......
Inkjet printers ( decent quality ones ) are really inexpensive ........these days .
Plus they offer the option of colour printing at relatively low cost .
When I had to recently replace a printer , I looked for one that had ....... a minimal number of ink cartridges and the largest ink capacity .
You know what your usage will be ....so the verdict is yours.

dl65
Black is really all you need 95% of the time, as you eloquently put it. Two printers could be the most cost efficient yet if you do need color occasionally.http://www.smallbusinesscomputing.com/testdrive/article.php/3521141
Thanks, folks. I appreciate your input. I think I just need more time to mull things over. There's no easy answer at this point.

Nice article, Hopester. I've read several along those same lines. Thanks.

Solve : Can you copy Info?

Answer»

I have a very simple question. Can you copy info from a older Hard Disk Drive to another Hard Disk Drive.

Because im thinking of buying a NEW HDD and need to KNOW if I will be able to put info from old 40Gig. to new 250gig. (I think thats how BIG it is) :-? :-? :-?Hamologist:

Yes.

You still have to install the operating system on the new hard drive. Simply copying the Windows or Winnt folder from the old hard drive will not give you a WORKING operating system, in most cases.

Also, make sure you have not encrypted or marked the files as private on the old hard drive before you copy them to the new one, or you will not be able to access those encrypted files in the new operating system.

Solve : image on computer screen?

Answer» HELLO , I have been trying to get an answer to the following problem: I search the web alot and have noticed a small horizontal line that appears out of no where on the bottom left of my screen. The only way I can get rid of it is by shutting down the computer. Is this some sort of spy ware, or some DEVICE that some one has attaced to my computer to watch me etc.Checking your system for spyware would probably be a good thing to do. Do you have any spyware removal tools installed?check your vid card for overheatingThe other thing you can try as it might be hardware related would be to remove the side panel from the machine and after grounding yourself carefully remove the vid card and re-seat it.
Check to SEE if any of your fans INCLUDING the one on the vid card are clogged with dust bunnies. Do some housekeeping, re-assemble everything and re-boot and see if this solves your issues...

Solve : hard drive space missing?

I have a compaq presario , 80 GB 7200RPM Ultra DMA hard drive( Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9) , 3100+ AMD sempron processor( 1.80 GHz, 256 kb L2 cache, 1600MHz system bus) , 512 MB PC3200 DDR SDRAM memory, ..... well i had gotten some corrupted files and my computer crashed and wouldnt start up so i took it to a friend of mine who knows a little bit about computers and he was able to run my hard drive as a slave in his computer and was able to wipe all files and reformatted it with Windows XP Pro ... only problem i am having now is that it reads that it only has like 32 GBs of total space he is at a loss as to why this is and so am i .... can anyone help me figure out this problem? My initial guess would be that he used an older VERSION of Windows to format that drive...there were size limitations back then.

Did he format in FAT32 or NTFS ?
Did he re-install your OS ?
Is it the same drive you gave him ?

patio. 8-)You may have more than 1 partition or if formatted as FAT32 only a partition was created. You can check this out. Compaqs FREQUENTLY have a hidden partition for restoring the OS as well. Let us know.

If that was not a legal XP Pro or it has already been loaded on another machine you will have problems soon due to the activation by the way. i was with him when he did all this so i do know that it is the same hard drive.... when my computer boots up it says in the bottom left corner something about COPYRIGHTS 2001....also i pulled the hard drive and noticed that the jumper was on the clj spot insted of the master spot??? does thismatter when formatting.... ?
sorry for the questions as i am quite new to computers but cant really afford to pay someone to fix itYou have a jumper on the drive set incorrectly. The CLJ or AC jumper limits the drive to a maximum of 32 GB (only useful on older PC motherboards)

If you format the drive with the CLJ or AC jumper then the drive capacity will be limited to 32GB. After removing the CLJ or AC jumper the drive will still be recognized as 32GB. You must reformat the drive WITHOUT the CLJ or AC jumper to gain the full capacity of the drive.

http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/images/useries6family.gif
http://service.maxtor.com/rightnow/images/maxtor_quantum%20jumpers.htm

One of these should help, If you have another brand hard drive, the label usually indicates the jumpers. REMOVE ALL jumpers, and then only place the one jumper for master/single, or cable select, if you can use that. Macs for the last couple of years can all use cable select, but master/single should be OK

You may need to partition and format the drive again and reload Windows!

You also may want to find someone else to help with your repairs if your friend did this. If he did place the jumper there ask him why.

Solve : Do I need a boot disk or what??

Answer»

Please help me out with this guys, and be aware that I am a complete idot when it comes to computers so spell it out as in DETAIL as possible I just bought this laptop off of ebay and I knew it didn't have an operating system so I took my win98 boot disk and pluged it in. I get to boot menu in BIOS (I THINK) and select hard drive and it says invalid system disk. Do I need a new boot disk? everything up until that point seems to work ok it does the ram passed screen at first start and then it goes right to boot menu. Should I down load a boot disc on a CD from my DESKTOP and try it on my laptop? Where is a good place to get a bootdisc for windows xp?

Thanks in advance for the help,
Dewey

PS sorry if this is in the wrong forum
if it helps it is a Micron Transport Treck 2anyone? PLEASE? Folks are just waking up where I live.

What you need to do is set the machine to boot from CD first and if you have a bootable CDROM you are all set to load.

If you do NOT have a bootable CDROM, set the machine to boot from floppy first and download a file to make a boot floppy from at www.bootdisk.com

If you do not have a floppy drive, then we will have to do something else.

Setting it to boot fom a blank hard drive will present the problem you describe. You have to get a bootable device to load the operating system."What you need to do is set the machine to boot from CD first and if you have a bootable CDROM you are all set to load. ""

Is this where I hold F2 down and go to the boot menu, then + or - until the CD-Rom OPTION goes to the top?

Can I do this with my CD burner and CD-R discs? or do I need another type disc? I've tried burning a CD from bootdisc.com and then setting the CD rom to boot first, but no luck, maybe I'm doing something wrong??

Thanks for the help !!!!Quote

This is where you enter the BIOS/Setup area and choose the boot order. The exact KEY combination to get their should be on screen when the machine starts up. (What make and model is this?)

The file should not be copied to a CDR directly. It has to be burned as an ISO by Nero or some other program. That will make it bootable.

Solve : No Beep Codes- CPU problem??

Answer»

If when I turn on my setup and the system is completely unresponsive, with no beep codes or anything, could an improperly seated CPU be responsible? If not, what would be an indication of an improperly seated CPU? ThanksThe most important thing is what happened prior to this. If you haven't been monkeying inside the case, the computer hasn't been jarred, and it was working fine yesterday, improperly seated CPU would be at the bottom of the list.

More details on what is wrong and the history are neaded fore an informed OPINION. This post is related to the one entitled something like "Lights flicker but system won't power up". I have never been able to get the system to work, and I don't have a computer that I can swap components in and out of. I think that the problem is the motherboard, but I am just trying to learn as much as I can so that I don't buy a new mobo and then find out that it was really the CPU causing problems. Basically, since I can't find out which components work by testing them in a different computer, I'm trying to learn about typical signs of device failure.

Setup:
Case- Aspire X-Navigator
Mobo- INTEL D945PSN LGA 775 socket
CPU- Intel Pentium D 930 Presler 3.0GHz
RAM- 1Gb Patriot 240-pin DDR2 667
HDD- 320Gb Seagate Barricuda SATA 3Gb/s
Optical- Sony DVD Burner
Graphics- ATI Radeon x1600 PRO 512mb PCI-Express
PSU- Antec SP-500 500WI've tried stripping the mobo down to the bare essentials- RAM, CPU, and VID card- and firing it up outside of the case, and that yielded the same results I've been getting all along. It seems to me like there's definitely a bad piece of hardware, and I think that the hardware was damaged by the PSU that came with my case, which I originally installed but have since replaced. The speaker that gives the beep codes is built in to the mobo itself, and so since I haven't gotten any beep codes, I believe that the mobo is to blame. Also, I thought maybe I received a second bum power supply because when I turned it on, none of the fans spun. However, I sent a message to Antec's web support, and they TOLD me that most modern power supplies don't do anything until plugged into the mobo; this also leads me to suspect a problem with the motherboard. I just am trying to find some sort of certainty in my problem before I buy a new mobo, and then find out I actually had to buy a new CPU. Any ideas?

-Thanks.

Solve : Motherboard Needs to be Flashed??

Answer»

So with help i have gotten a NEW computer built but i have found i huge error wit the computer that im not SURE what to do about. I have installed a dual core processor on the motherboard when it first needs to be flashed by a single core processor.

At first the computer worked fine then now it crashes constantly i cant do anything on the computer for no longer then 15 to 30 mins without it crashing to a blue scrn

Is it too late for me to flash the motherboard with a single core and then reinstalling the dual core or would it be better just to buy another motherboard that supports dual and installed my all my other hardware onto that?

Thanks..
I would go ahead and try that. Nothing to lose, eh? There may be other issues here, since apparently that is a new build. Do we get a hint on the components?O yea sure sry about that,

ECS 945P-A (1.1) ATX Intel Motherboard
SAPPHIRE Radeon X800GTO2 100130SR Deluxe Video Card
Intel Pentium D 820 800MHz FSB LGA 775 Dual Core, EM64T Processor

Is there other stats you need?

O so its ok to just replace the motherboard even if i have already ran the computer, will the data on my HD be still there too?

Thanks for the quick replyData is only stored on the hard drive, not the motherboard. Why are you in a HURRY to replace it?well its my only good computer and i use it for school and gaming....

So its ok to just replace the motherboard? what ones would u recommend for my stats?I don't know that the motherboard needs to be replaced and tossed, but whatever you get, make sure it is compatible with your other components.

What is the computer to be used for - heavy gaming? What is the budget?

Have you looked at www.newegg.com?All the parts are compatible, i know that the only problem that causing it to reset is because it needs to be flashed by a single core processor

I use it for mostly school and gaming. Is there a local shp that could do that for you? It seems a waste to get a whole new motherboard IF that is the only issue.I actually found the motherboards website where i think i can flash or change the BIO's but im not sure what to do

http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWeb/Downloads/ProductsDetail_Download.aspx?DetailID=525&DetailNa me=BIOS&DetailDesc=945P-A(V1.1)&MenuID=35&LanID=0Flashing the BIOS with the wrong info can get you a DEAD MBoard...be careful, and read as much as you can.i do mean flashing the bios up to dual core sry bout that but i tried that program and it worked in a since, computer starts, but now at boot i get "CMOS Checksum Bad" and then it gives me option to go into the configuration and i actually called up a friend that could help and we tried changing everything in the CMOS configuration to the right settings but it doesnt work, the changes i make never save even if i do "save and exit". So the computer is stuck at "CMOS Checksum Bad" my friend nor I have any clue how 2 correct that problem.Did you try Google? I did. and there are a lot of links:

Here's one:

And here's some more:

Solve : External video, or something?

Answer»

My brother has a laptop, its quite fast, and in perfect shape. Except for one problem, because of a defect in this MODEL of laptop, the onboard video card is ruined.

I know that there are sound cards that are external and plugged in via USB. Does the same APPLY for video cards?

The external video is also ruined.
My brother is searching for a new motherboard, but there are many on eBay, and who knows what they can turn out to be like.

Also, are there any PCMCIA slot video cards? Or other alternatives that I might not know of?
From what my brother said, the laptop cannot be upgraded to a newer video card. (because the current is onboard)

LINKS and any help appreciated.
ThanksVideo is not a repairable OPTION on virtually any laptop and requires a replacement mobo as they are onboard CHIPS. Sorry.

Solve : printer settings?

Answer»

i have windows xp home edition on the computer and i have a canon s200x printer attached which is normally quite adequate for my requirements. i had a low ink warning setting on the old machine but since i built this computer it has now disappeared. when i install a new ink cartridge and click on the low ink warning setting, i get the message that the printer is not set to allow use of the low ink warning facility. I have been through what i can find of the printer settings but none of these refer to low ink warning. i have read the MANUAL from cover to cover and found no solution. i am told that it can be changed in the driver, but when i try to OPEN the driver i get told that there is one installed already and i cannot find any settings to change. i have been on the canon help and support web site but that it a waste of time. i wonder is i should install an xp driver since i have used the one on the original disk which may be out of date.walterAn updated driver may be available on the Canon site. That is what you should ALWAYS use -the most recent driver for the correct operating system.

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=SupportDetailAct&fcategoryid=231&modelid=6608i sage, thx for the REPLY about printer settings. i found nothing on the canon site but i thought i WOULD get the xp driver for the machine. walter.Let us know.

Solve : laptop help??

Answer»

H'ok so i have this peice for a laptop right, its an hp ze44.. something right i got it out of the trash so i cant complain but i could fix it if i could get the case off ..there in lays my problem i really want to fix it cause a laptop would be nice, but there is like a screw i cant find right in the MIDDLE right around where that weird mouse green thing would be, and i cannot for the life of me figure it out if anyone has any IDEAS i have loads of time and an open mind. any help would be super and i will love you till you die and/or tell me that its creepy that i love you. right thanksits probably under a STICKER. that is if u r talking about TAKING the laptop case off. companies place a sticker over 1 if not 2 screws so they know if u opened it or not. (its a warrenty issue). push on the sticker and MOVE ur finger around it, u will feel a bowled area where the screw is.naw there is only on sticker on the bottom, i checked it tho and there isnt anything underneath it thanks tho. With many laptop chassis you have to lever the keyboard out in order to access those elusive screws. Does that look possible with this model?im sorry i know next to nothing about laptops, you mean like remove the keys? You might find the help you need here:

Doc
naw nothing about the screw, i doubt there is still a warranty left on it. I dont know the exact model like i said i got it for free.Which screw on page 2-27 are you talking about?

There is probably a reason it was in the trash. You may have found it. i cant find any pages of screws or any listings of them, it was in the trash because the ac/dc jack on the mother board had fried or was broken, but im not there yes i need the last screw or so, pcdoc4christ if u could give me a link to what your refering to that would be great.I suspect it was fried then, and that was the reason. Good luck.

So you have never attempted a repair on a laptop?gahh no i learn as the opsticles present themselves, gotta get the experience from somewhere, and if i even get a grasp on what im doing i doubt my soldering job will be exemplory. but hey its broken now, cant get worseQuote

...pcdoc4christ if u could give me a link to what your refering to that would be great.

See the link in my previous post.

All of the keys are usually attached to a single piece of plastic/metal. Often that can be levered away from the case once the correct screws have been removed. Don't force it though.

Solve : wheres my floppy??

Answer»

does my new HP Media Center PC not have a floppy drive? or is it hidden somewhere? I thought all comps had a floppy? Most COMPUTERS do not have a floppy anymore, UNFORTUNATELY. It is a way for manufacturers to save $5 on a machine and the public doesn't care.

I will personally ALWAYS install a floppy in any machine I use.

Is this the machine you cannot get to load or another?A floppy drive can be added but i would suggest the local repair shop for this...they shouldn't charge too much for this.

patio. 8-)its only plugging 2 things in and putting in a couple scews patio. Agreed.
But due to the extended LACK of system info i was assuming...well you know.

Provided you have access to a CD burner and Smart Boot Manager, floppies seem pretty much redundant. Especially given how the slightest bit of dirt COMPLETELY WRECKS them... They're quite useful for bootdisks - especially for odd/server OSes, but that's about it. Can't remember when I last used one. Good riddance!

Solve : Send video to TV?

Answer»

Hey all,

I have an old computer I want to set up as a multimedia "server". I have pod/vidcast etc on the HDD and want to be ABLE to play on my TV in a different room. I know about s-video/composite but from what I understand these degreade over distance, my my distance is a GOOD 15 meters. I was wondering if anyone had any IDEAS about how i could send video from the computer to the tv over this distance with minimal degredation.

I have a cable box if that helps/makes things worse and the room with the computer is not where the cable enters the house.

Thanks for your ideas!I never used s-video/composite, but I thought perhaps some type of amplifier could be used for this. Take a look at this: 4-Way S-Video AV Distribution Amplifier. I see this a UK site. GOOGLE s-video/composite signal booster for more.i have my TV hooked up to my S-video, rigged a cable. i had an old gamecube video cable that didnt work anymore, so i cut the S-video head off of it, wired it to a composite jack, plugged it into my tv and computer, and viola, it worked, but it is very fuzzy, so is my brothers setup, he paid about 25 bucks for his composite to s-video adapter, but somehow he tweaked it and it looks fine, aside from the fonts, they are nearly unreadable unless they are large... you probably will have to do some tweaking to get rid of the fuzz, if you are using a s-video to composite converter. if it is straight from the s-video out on the computer to the tv, it may not be fuzzy, but i can say that the longer the cable is, the more signal strength is lostSomehow I don't think this is what he was looking for.If you want a really long cable run, >have a read of this<. There are alternatives, such as streaming the media over a LAN, but that would require a network and more than one PC.

Solve : Power button??

Answer»

OK, I get you now. It's makes sense, since the wires leading from the reset button are probably soldered to it. Therefore, the end that connects to the motherboard is where he makes the change. THANKS for that clarification.

Of course, he won't have his reset switch, but he can force a shutdown it necessary. I KNOW what you're saying , Lencojoe.

In this instance, PRETTY much any old switch will do. See Maplins, as ian124 SAID.

Solve : 2 Network Cards?

Answer»

I just installed a second network card. One connects to my DSL Modem and the other connects to my wireless ROUTER. I have 2 Dell XPS Laptops that connects to the router. The reason why I installed a second card was in hopes that my Desktop can act like a server (Its running Windows XP Home Edition) But since i installed the second network card I am unable to browse the network, such as share files. Any suggestions? I am pretty good with computers but this has me stumped!Do you have the router set to DHCP? Windows XP Home is not an ideal server solution, BTW. Have you set the IP addreses differently?

Let us know what you have done.Yes, the router is set to DHCP, and for some reason, both have different IP addresses. I didnt set them, I am not sure how.DHCP assigns the IP addresses.

http://www.windowsnetworking.com/j_helmig/tcpip.htmOk so why cant i share files between computers on my network?I really need some help on this! PLEASE :-?You Need To Turn Off DHCP on The Router , and the Turn On IinternetConnectionShareing on the Computer your on. then set the laptops to auto

All the Windows Details are in the Link that GX1_man posted

For the Router Info Read The ManualEach network card will be assigned a different address by the DHCP server. The problem may be that the computer with two network cards now needs to know which card to USE for which application/port.

No idea really, why you installed the second card. You don't need to, for what you're trying to do. You only need two cards really for advanced routing techniques, and as GX1_Man said, you wouldn't use XP Home for that. Pull that card out again and let us know if everything returns to normal.

Then decide (and perhaps tell us) exactly what you want to achieve.

Only turn the DHCP server off (as Panboy suggested) if you're prepared to start manually assigning IP addresses. For some IDEAS, follow the link to the networking FAQ, in my signature.K, I am back to one network card, everything is fine, I did look at the link. What I was just MOSTLY doing was testing out what two network cards would do, kinda silly I know. But was trying to see if having two network cards would make my desktop computer act like a server, be able to CONNECT DIRECTLY to the internet, and have the laptops connect to my computer through the router. and still be able to share files and stuff.
You don't actually need server facilities in this environment. Let the router do what it was designed to do for the network. Then all you do is set up peer-to-peer file and print sharing for your LAN. If you need help with that, there are lots of tutorials out there on the net (via Google).

NB You don't want to set up file and print sharing unless your router has a built in firewall which is blocking all the relevant ports. If it has a firewall and you've not turned it off, it probably blocks those ports by default.

Solve : Adding RAM?

I was hoping to improve my amount of RAM. At the moment i have 512Mb and would LIKE to upgrade this, if I was to buy 1Gb, could i use both at the same time (for 1.5Gb) or would I only be able to use 1 at a time.

I'm guessing i could buy another 512Mb and use that with my current one or buy 2 1Gb and use 2 of those together instead. It all depends on your motherboard, and nothing else. If you post your MB make and model we could advise. The exact specs should be followed for compatibility. Speed alone is not enough.
