Solve : Nvidia VS ATI?

Answer»

This is a question more than a PREFERENCE. I have a SYSTEM up and running with the on board video that is the GForce6100 chipet. I had a ATI chipset graphics card installed with the on-board video disabled but got "transparent pixels"(see earlier POST) I am wondering if there could be a conflict, My monitor looks fine with the ATI card uninstalled.only reason I WENT with the ATI to begin with was that is what I was used to and the 512mb........ any thoughts ? I honestly think the card is bad but no REAL way to test it as its PCI-e...

Solve : PCI modem not recognized in Win2k machine?

Answer»

PIII 800MHz machine with 384mg ram, clean install of Windows 2000 with all updates and service packs. There are 4 pci slots and the brand new modem is not seen in any of them. I thought it might be a bad card so I took it back, got another (same make and model) and got the same result.

In device manager there is no modem listed, scanned for new hardware after inserting in each of the pci slots. I thought that maybe it needed drivers to be seen, but the installation disk EXITED saying that no device was detected. The slots work as there is a nic card loaded and recognized. I tried the nic in all the slots and it was seen and worked fine in each.

Took the second card back and the store installed it in an XP machine and I am wiping the egg of my face because it showed the new hardware window and the drivers loaded from the CD with no problem. I am heading back there on Monday because I want their technician to load it in a Win2k machine.

Until then, any ideas on why it was not seen?

ThanksWere the MBoard drivers re-installed after the clean Win2K install > >
How are the PCI devices listed in Device Manager ?
You could try right clicking them and removing them and see if Windows re-installs them...The computer is about 7 years old and the motherboard drivers loaded up fine. In device manager there are no yellow or red indicated devices. The card in the pci slot is the nic and it shows up under network adapters. The nic reinstalled without a problem.

Thanks
Did you try removing the NIC first and removing it from Device Manager and then re-booting once or twice ...then power down, install the modem and see if it's detected properly.

BTW is this a WinModem ? ?
If so buy another brand.Did not try the REMOVE and reboot for the nic, will try that next. The company that makes the modem is Encore and the card brand is Agere. Apparently they have a large line of products and MINE is the first problem this store owner has encountered.

ThanksTry getting new drivers and with the card installed run the setup for the drivers. Sometimes the hardware won't show up until the drivers are installed. Than it does a search for that make and model modem.

Solve : reverse IDE cables?

Answer»

I know this sounds dumb but I have to ask it anyway.....My HDD sirs at a 90 degree ANGLE form the other drives in my case. is it possible to put the SYSTEM side of the CABLE on the Master side and the slave drive side to the slave drive then inputting from the board using the Master end of the cable ?.. problem is I CANT seem to find a IDE cable long enough to go from Master to slave from the MOBO ...They have new modular IDE cables that are ROUND and also longer between the master and slave connectors...perhaps this would be a more workable solution than hooking up the existing cable backwards.

Solve : pen drive is not working?

Answer»

hi !!

i have a pen drive of 2 gb

the proplem is that whenever i am trying to format it , it is not GETTING formatted.

i am unable to copy, PASTE from it.

when i checked its properties , it is showing as RAW disk with 0 used space & 0 total size

please help me to find out what is the actual problem with this pendrive ??You NEED to give more information.

When you say "it is not getting formatted," what do you mean? Is it giving any error messages?

Also, are you on windows? If so, what version? For all we know, you're running an amiga with a hack-jobbed usb connection.try looking for format programs on google you will need the name of the usb to shearch for the RIGHT formatter program. Note that this should work if your unable to regularly format it.RAW means it was unplugged prematurely WITHOUT using the Safely Remove Device feature...
How are you trying to format it ? ?
It should be done from Disk Management.
Right clik My Computer...select Manage...then Disk Management.
Right clik the pendrive and select Format.

Solve : Questions about TV tuner cards?

Answer»

I'm interested in getting a TV tuner card for my pc, but I'm wondering how they work. Once INSTALLED, do I connect my cable coax line directly to it and that's it? I'm really hoping it's that simple. Can anyone offer me any tips, or SUGGESTIONS in REGARDS to certain brands, what problems might come up, etc? Thanks!Yeah, pretty much. It depends on what card you get and if your cable is analog or digital, but that just determines where you plug in your cable. I have a ATI 650 Pro PCI-express card, it just came out a few MONTHS ago. The main reason I bout it was because of its PCI-e 1x and because it was very thin. The card I had before the capacitors would hit the back of my video card’s COOLER. If you do get the ATI do not use the software that came with it (Catalysis media Center), it could not find any channels. So instead, I bought SnapSteam Media’s Beyond TV 4, because I have XP Pro, and it picked up all of my channels in the first go. In addition, if they still are doing it, you get a free remote when you buy it.

Solve : Won't See Drive2?

The Hard Drive isn't seen in the BIOS and I changed the drive and the IDE cable and still nothing. Its JUMPER is set to master. When I connected it to an external HD connector I COULD see the drive. I tried removeing everything an putting it in a PC like it cards,HD,CD - ROM. Its a complete blank drive, but i had tried one with an os on it 2k. I have 3 of these same machine I'm useing drives from the an hardware. Tried looking for dload on westerndigital site but it didn't find it.

Your description was somewhat hard to decipher, but it sounds like you're just having an issue with that one drive.

However... your subject says "won't see drive2." If this is in fact a second drive on the same computer, check your jumper settings on drive1 and your optical drive (cd/dvd-rom/rw)

Post that here.No something else is wrong and I don't know what cause I can see the drive on my other pc's. This is a continueation of Won't see drive.Ok. If you don't want to post answers to questions in ORDER to help you, I can't do anything for you then.I just did! There is no slave just a master an no matter what pc I connect it too it isn't being seen an I use the same stuff in the other pc to make it like the one I was useing, the drive works cause I used an external. You're not being clear at all.

First of all, why does your post say "Won't see drive 2"

Second, if "there is no slave" like you say, then you have issues. You can't have every device set as master.

Tell me more specifically what is in the pc. Is there a cd-rom/dvd-rom drive?
Is there another hard drive?
what are the jumper settings on each?Changed the main drive its know an 80 gb maxtor and is working.Ok. Glad you're working, but hopefully no one else has a similar issue as you, as we haven't figured out anything.

I'm guessing that drive you replaced isn't bad, since you stated it would work as an external drive.Yeah wierd it was a western digital

Solve : Adding hard drives to RAID 0?

Answer»

This is just a question I have been pondering for some time: I have a 500 GB hard drive that is filling up fast, form games, recorded TV, and music. I have been chewing on the idea of adding another hard drive and making it RAID 0. I was wondering if I could make it RAID 0 without having to reformat my current hard drive and if it is possible, how can I do it? I have not yet bought another hard drive yet because I have not found an answer to this question.

Thanks. Will you be using a hardware RAID controller (motherboard or add-in card) or Windows Software RAID? I would prefer hardware but whatever works. I will be trying hardware first.i have reason to believe that you have to format your HD in order to get a RAID 0 array setup.

RAID 0 (Striped without parity) results in increased space and disk performance without any fault tolerance.

it results in increased disk performance, not increased space, in fact, it reduces disk space. 2 X 500gb harddrives in a JBOD setup will result in 1000gb total storage capacity, whereas 2 X 500gb harddrives in a RAID 0 setup will result in 500gb total storage capacity. You've GOT your RAIDs confused. I have two 75GB HDDs in a 150 GB (hardware) RAID 0. There is a description of RAID here.ah, my mistake i did have them confused. sorry about that.Quote from: homer on February 04, 2008, 06:52:54 PM
i have reason to believe that you have to format your HD in order to get a RAID 0 array setup.

So there is no way I could just create a RAID 0 array and not have to reformat? Bummer.I will say no, you can't create a RAID 0 and not have to format. If someone knows of a way, I will be thrilled to learn!
If you use hardware RAID you could make an image of the drive using something like Acronis or Norton Ghost prior to setting up the RAID and then apply the image after RAID is configured. I guess the only way I would be able to do it would be to backup my hard drive, and then transfer the files back the RAID drives. How doe the image process work?An image is essentially a snapshot of your drive (or partition). It will be a single large file. You'll probably need an external hard drive to store the image. After your target drive is configured you can write that image to it and Voila!, you're back in business. That's a high level overview. The specifics will vary greatly depending upon the software you choose and your setup.

Solve : Dvd-rw combo drive?

Answer»

I hope SOMEONE can help me, because Toshiba can't.. I have a Toshiba Satellite Model L35-S2151 and am LOOKING to replace my current DRIVE to a DVD-Rw combo drive but i can't find any information on one being compatible. Toshiba tells me that one is available but would not give me a model number only the price. I am sure that I can find one cheaper than $150. Any help would be appreciated.Bump...Honestly... toshiba is your BEST resource. If you GOOGLE it, all you're going to find are 3rd party solutions, and they're only going to be for external dvd-rw drives.

With a laptop, the drive has to fit in the slot depending on the form factor and design toshiba used... so they are really your only resource.

Solve : I need help with a graphics card that doesn't work?

Answer»

I got a computer - free - from a friend of mine that's good enough for everything I need to do. Except, it's got REALLY crappy on-board graphics. How crappy, you ask? I can't even be on a website with too much activity (and do you know how many websites sneak in ads that dance around or have little movies?) without my computer crashing...blue screen and everything. (It only happens when there's a video or something similar PLAYING - and it ALWAYS happens when there's a video or something similar playing - so I'm sure that's what it is.)

So I bought a graphics card to take some of the strain off. The computer only has PCI slots, so I was pretty limited in what I could GET. I got the NVidia GEForce FX5200.

I popped it in my computer and turned it on, and the monitor doesn't get a signal. The little "on" light stays yellow, like the computer isn't even on. The computer itself still makes all of its usual little start-up noises, so I know the only problem is that I can't see anything. I even tried disconnecting the monitor from the graphics card itself and reconnecting it to the regular plug-in, but still nothing. The instructions tell me that I might have to go into my BIOS and set the graphics to "PCI." But...there's nothing in the BIOS menu that even REMOTELY resembles video options. Once I take the card out of the computer, everything's fine again...or at least back to normal.

I'm stuck. Is it the card? The computer? Am I missing something obvious? (I tried it again just to make sure and had the same problem.) I asked this on another forum and all the responses were along the lines of "PCI sucks, get a new computer." (While I'm sure that's a great solution, I'm looking for something a little cheaper.)Welcome to the CH forums.

Please read this

Hate to ask but you did install a driver Thanks for responding.

I didn't install drivers, but that's only because the CD that came with the card wouldn't let me unless the card was already in the computer...and of course, once the card is in my computer, I can't really do anything! When I run the disc and indicate that I want to install the drivers, I get the message, "The graphics adapter installed in the system is not compatible with the current set of drivers" and it won't let me go any farther.Quote from: Dusty on February 04, 2008, 11:38:09 PM

I wanted to check compatibility between the card and your mobo but you haven't given any details of the pc you're working with, not even the operating system. With no driver installed your chances of using the card are fairly slim.

Some systems will automatically disable onboard video when a video card is installed; others will not, it must be disabled in the BIOS. What "instructions are you referring to above, instructions that came with the computer or with the video card?

Also, some systems can be picky about what PCI card is used for a video card. I once installed a PCI video card in a Sony VAIO to run a second monitor [it has an AGP card for the primary monitor]. That computer would not properly recognize the PCI video card unless it was installed in the top PCI slot. So, I suggest you do some experimenting with slots.

And, posting the make and MODEL of the computer here would help us help you.

Solve : PC Remote Control for computer in the ceiling?

Answer»

It is our plan to place the PC in the conference room above the ceiling tiles to (hopefully) prevent inept executives from dumping coffee, pulling CORDS, etc., etc,. etc. It will be attached to a ceiling mounted projector. Access to USB ports will be AVAILABLE via a wall plate (http://www.datapro.net/catalog/face-plates.html.

We are still undecided regarding the power on/off switch. We considered extending the wires that run from the MOTHERBOARD to the powerswitch through the wall to the wall plate. The idea of a remote control to power the PC on/off is also appealing, but I'm having trouble finding a good one. Anyone know of a good one?

Note: We want the executives to be able to turn the PC On/off WITHOUT contacting the IT department (me). I would consider simply having a wireless mouse/keyboard combo so the machine could be powered down PROPERLY when not in use.
You may also want to consider adding an UPS unit as well for protection.Powering it down when not in use wasn't the primary concern; WINDOWS pitching a fit and sending an exec into a frenzy is the greater concern. We don't want a keyboard with the ability to shut down/sleep/hibernate the computer. It would no doubt generate another helpdesk ticket when an unwitting individual accidentally pushes the button. (I had to disable the scroll wheel on a mouse at the user's request; it was too high tech for him. These are the people I work with . . . .) http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=15760&vpn=FP-800-BK&manufacture=Logisys%20Computer

wireless power on and reset, its also a fan controller. i second the use of a wireless keyboard and mouse as well. Thanks homer, that has potential! Have you used one of these? I'm wondering if the external gauge displays can be done away with. There won't be much use for them if the PC is above the ceiling tiles and most of our PCs are small form factor and don't have 5.25" bays. (I should have mentioned that from the start.) my last post was the only thing i could find regarding wireless starting. you may be able to physically modify it by removing all the unnessesary features/functions. Ex. stripping it down to nothing but the wireless reciever and placing the CCT somewhere within the computer.Quote from: Eg0Death on February 04, 2008, 12:33:21 PM

For USB 2.0 (Hi-Speed), I believe the specification for max cable length is 5 meters. (Don't know if wall plate connection will further reduce this length.) You might want to test this configuration on the work bench before you install it above the ceiling tiles.Quote

15 ft (5 meters) is the maximum length panel mount cable provided. I intend to keep the run to 10ft or less to be on the safe side.

Solve : HP monitor has blue tint?

Answer»

I changed my hard drive last night to a larger unit, now my monitor has a HEAVY blue tint. I can see everything but it's all BLUE. I tried a SYSTEM RESTORE point to before I changed the HD (I cloned the new HD from the old one then removed the old one) but it's still blue. I'm thinking it's a setting or driver or something. I tried updating the drivers from the monitor install disk but it said I had the most current one. Also tried DIFFERENT resolution settings. The monitor is an HP vs19e LCD. It was working fine before I changed the hard drive.Try reinstalling your display drivers...not the monitor drivers, but your graphics card.I tried reloading the drivers for the video card, no luck with that. Still have a very blueish screen.Look in your monitor manual, how to access default settings.Tried the factory reset from the menu......still blue. I'm stumped, maybe the video card went bad?make sure that the connector is all of the way on.Quote

Solve : Fan sounds like it's catching?

Answer»

we have a semi new HP PC m7350n
and it sounds LIKE one of the fans is catching on something
but it only happens whenever something is trying to load.
a couple days ago it was cleaned out,
and dust free
it still makes the sound even when the fans are stopped manuallycould it be the harddrive?
Quote

whenever something is trying to load.

does it make this sound at startup?Yes EVERY time
and sometimes it stops while on
others it just starts out of nowhere
i can only see three fans
but i have no clue whether or not it
could be a FAN i can't see making the sound
What are the three fans? A CPU fan and two case fans, or what? If you have two case fans, I suggest disconnecting one at a time, or both at the same time, and then start your computer and see whether the noise occurs or not. Yeah
we already checked by stopping the fans
disconnectiong them and so on
and the only other thing i could think of
would be the Harddrive
but it sounds exactly like a fan catchingif it makes the sound at startup, simply REMOVE the harddrive and see if the sound continues or not.Alright
and if it is the harddrive
i would need to take it in and get it fixed?
or would it be better just to buy a new one
if it is the harddrive its best if you buy a new one, you want to make sure its the same interface though. (SATA or IDE)Yeah thats what i was guessing
thanks for the help
ill reply right away if its the HarddriveWe took it apart
and found out
its the fan that is on our video card
and
nowhere we found
online or off
that sells the type we need
so anybody know where the best place
to buy a new videocard would be
and what type for our computerwhat make/model is your video card?A computer repair shop would be the best place to match up a replacement fan...take the card with you.
I have a MicroCenter nearby and they stock upwards of 40 different makes/models of fans.

Solve : Board wont boot after processor change.?

Answer»

OK,

I have a VIA mobo, with a pentium III socket 370 @ 800MHz however the board is no good, However the other day i bought a Tangent Desktop with a intel MoBo and a socket 370 slot for $20 ( i bought it for the XP license) It ran xp but i figured i could put the pentium III in, since the celeron was only 266MHz, and lacked a L2 cache. When i removed the heatsink from the celeron i was suprised..... It was a celeron that even after all my years of working with computers i had never seen before. I expected it to be a Green colored processor with an exposed BLUE die. I was wrong, it was a black processor, with a metal jacket over the die, (like what a pentium 4 desktop looks like, except black) At first i though the mad had lied to me, and that it was actualy an AMD processor, however when i turned it over it was clearly marked "Intel Celeron '98" so i shruged, and put the Pentium III in since they were both the same socket, however it would not give the screen power. I have no idea why, everything is compatable, and i have double checked all connections, but still have no luck.

Suggestions?

ThanksWithout info on the new board it's impossible t tell...just because the chip fits does not mean it will work and you risk damaging the CPU/board or both...

Keep in mind that XP will not boot properly with a MBoard or CPU change without doing a Repair Install first.i UNDERSTAND, however its not the OS, it is that it wont give power to the vidoe card, i might just need a new power supplyHave you checked with the MOBO manufacturer for CPU compatibility? I understand. But your missing the point that not all Socket 370 boards support every Socket 370 CPU's...

( and you still may risk frying one or the other )Try useing the video card in another MACHINE. Check if the card is seated right. Listen to Patio and me, not every processor is made to fit other boards it will list it if it does the fact that its a 370 doesn't matter. Its like use a 370 in a 478 it won't work.Meh. not the video card, actualy not even my fault that its screwed up, turns out tht the board'd bios chip had some issues.... like the small fact that it lit on fire...... yeah.....

Thx for the help thoughIt is your fault. YOu didn't ask first. Then you kept saing it should work.wow. you think its my fault?

guess what im sorry that the guy that gave it to me was not "technicaly inclined" but i did ask him if it booted, he said yes. Im sorry that i was given a sucky computer for free. I never said it should work, i said that everything on my end was good, all cables and connectors, not soldered on BIOS chips. Id strongly recomend posting something useful rather than flaming other members.

If im correct this is supposed to me a site to help people new to computers, or those experiancing problems. i work at a computer store, and am a resident NETWORK tech, i know my stuff, if you flame me for a mistake, then i pray you wont do it to a new member.

NOTHING against you, just asking you to be a bit considerate.

Thanks guysIf you mentioned that people don't have to assume. Just ask here if you have a problem thats what I do. Some where some one did it. Well the pc doesn't suck... I have a c64 that wont boot. I can tell who is a novice an who isn't. I do html, java, computer tech an ect..... but you could have mentioned it. Try This...

Solve : Files not visible on Hard Drive.?

Answer»

I've had this problem for a while now and so FAR I've not been able to solve it. Basically I have a Samsung SP0411N hard drive and I used to be able to ACCESS it for backing up files. It's an internal EIDE HD so I would connect it as a slave every time I wanted to back up files as I never had an external HD then. One day I just couldn't access the files anymore. Although looking at it in explorer it indicated, and still does, that there are files on it which make up 25 of the 40 Gig it can store, I can't seem to access it. I've tried several hard drive recovery applications but none of them have been that good. Can any one recommend a good hard drive recovery application I could use so I can mend it. The drive works but I just can't view the files I know are there. Would I have to add a partition or something perhaps? Ideally I'm looking to repair the HD and assuming it works physically then it must be repairable? As far as I can remember it was never used as primary Hard drive so it doesn't have an OS on it. Help!A little confused here...

Your subject states the files are not visible on the hard drive, but you state in your post, the files can be seen but are not ACCESSIBLE. Is this the case?

Has this drive always been in the computer you are referring to? Can you access any of the files at all? Have there been any changes to the "Users" permissions on this computer? Are any of the files on it private?

Try this:

1. Boot into Safe Mode.
2. In WINDOWS Explorer for that particular drive go to \Documents and Settings\ and right click on the username folder.
3. Check the Security for the folders for that particular user and make sure the files and folders are not set as private.

See if this works, at all, and post back with your results...

Solve : Monitor has lines on it HELP please?

Answer»

I bought a used laptop on Ebay at Christmas...The other day when it rebooted there were these horrible lines on the monitor (RUNNING diagonally). Then after the computer was restarted I saw that when I moved the mouse it had small lines that showed up where ever I moved the mouse. Also there are these flashing like lines highlighting the cursor...bascially a big mess if you do any MAJOR use of the computer. I hooked an external monitor up and the lines show up there identically as they do on the laptop screen....I've done some adjustments and no help, over clocking, display settings....and such...Is it the video card or a RAM issue...Please help...I paid 300 for the computer. it is a Dell Latitude D600....Did you try to download new video drivers?I have but for some reason it won't let me...I went to ATI's website and clicked on the operating system, then the driver, downloaded it and it said that they were sorry but the software coldn't be download on my computer...urgh! This has been going on for three weeks...Thanks for your help any IDEAS???Since it's a laptop you should be using the manuf. drivers only...
Travel to Dell's site and enter the service TAG # from the bottom of the machine and it will tell you exactly what drivers that machine uses.

ok, i was able to FIRST go into router and delete the printer from the ip address distribution list. It was at 192.168.1.2.
Next, I was able to go into "uninstall a program" on pc and delete all 6 or 7 epson entries.
I then rebooted pc, while pc was rebooting i actually turned off the printer, then went back into the router and the printer is not in the ip distribution list but the ip address 192.168.1.2 is in my network table and says ip address allocation is static, mac address is the printer mac address, printer is still turned off.
Seems weird...how can i get rid of this so i can START from scratchQuote

I agree.....so does this mean I have to move on to a networking forum for help....?

I am trying to completely remove printer. I have deleted from network, then i go to devices and printers on my pc and highlight the epson and "remove device". It looks like its removed so i close that window and immediately re-open "devices and printers" and the epson is back again.
Is it possible that there is a program in Control Panel, Programs and Features that is CONTROLLING that printer.
I will move this topic to the Hardware forum where you can get more professional help with that problem.I dont know....
thanksI dont really understand how, what when where why, but I persevered and it's WORKING 100%....Last thing I did (after deleting anything epson related)was reboot router to get rid of the static address, reboot pc, and then reload the software but this time from the disk not from the download.
It's all good.....
Thanks for the help

Solve : 3 Bad Sectors on old PATA 20GB 2.5" laptop drive?

Answer»

Found 3 bad sectors after a clean install of Windows XP to one of my Dell Laptops failed and I ATTACHED this HD to my Windows 7 build via IDE/USB dongle, and performing scandisk to it. Question I have is ... scan disk was able to repair these 3 sectors but they were flagged as bad so the drive should be good to use now that those locations are to be skipped over.

If I reformat this drive does the bad SECTOR map GET wiped out or will the black flag sector map remain so that during a clean install of Windows XP in which the drive formats before installing clean I wont end up in the same boat as I did initially where it gets all the way through the install and then bails on the first time boot?

I started on this last night and got as far as the scan disk to flag for skipping these bad sectors. Going to start on this when I get home today and figured I'd run this past you all to see if the bad sector map will get dumped if I format or not?Good morning DaveLembke

If I am not mistaken mapping is done with-in windows (the OS) it self so if the hard drive is formatted then windows is reinstalled the OS would have to re-map the bad sectors again. The bad sectors are flagged but that is in the OS as bad so they are not used / bypassed and that info is not saved on the firmware / IC chip on the hard drive PCB.

Hope this helps, MIKE

Please keep one thing in mind when bad sectors start showing up it is just a matter of time before more and more show then the bitter end called failure Normally the bad sectors are marked as such in the drive's firmware where the "map" is stored. Fully formatting the drive should not erase the drive's map of reallocated sectors.
It might be worth using a program such as CrystalDiskInfo or HDTune to check the drive's SMART information (if the drive supports it) just to check how many bad sectors have been reallocated. Thanks everyone!

Learned something new as for I thought maybe it was stored on a slice of the platter like the MBR, but that its stored in firmware sounds promising to not losing the mapped bad sectors.

Also definately going to check into the programs you mentioned as for I wasnt aware of an ability to see if other sectors have been mapped bad without comparing the usable space against what a healthy drives storage is and then calculate how much loss there is and then figure out how many sectors are flagged bad.

And as far as this drive goes I know not to use it for anything critical and frequently back up data etc. The drive is old and the laptop it came out of was abused. The 12GB in the old Dell no longer spins up and my brother gave me this 20GB free out of a battered Toshiba that looked like it went down a flight of steps. Not looking to put any money into a Pentium III Dell Laptop that is to be used as a beater. Just need Windows XP to run again Quote from: DaveLembke on August 17, 2012, 01:02:18 PM

All drives have a certain number of unallocated sectors when fresh from the factory, these are then used to reallocate bad sectors. Some older drives don't support SMART, and not all drives will give you all the information that can be read via SMART, but it's definitely worth checking because you should be able to see how many have been reallocated, and of course if the number begins to increase you know the drive is going downhill fast. Hopefully it will be of some use to you happy to help.I have Spinrite which is able to repair bad sectors. Not worth buying unless trying to resurrect an important drive.
It's fixed several drives which were deemed "almost dead".
http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htmSpinrite is also a very handy tool to have when trying to get some important data off an almost dead drive, yes. Always a good idea to try and make a bit-for-bit image of the drive before using anything like that though, provided the drive's still in good enough shape to do so.Many industrial controls have hard drives which are never backed up. Most IT departments do not support them & management doesn't understand it & won't order them to support them by performing image backups.Quote from: DaveLembke on August 17, 2012, 12:22:31 PM

Once you can "see" bad sectors, it is at the file system level. Before that it uses the drives remapping, but you don't 'see' those bad sectors except with a S.M.A.R.T tool. Otherwise, it's stored as part of the filesystem. for example, With FAT, for example, Bad Sectors within clusters are dealt with using a special code within the FAT entry that represented the cluster containing the bad sector. This mean that data could be lost but that sector would never be used again.

Format checks the disk for bad sectors as it formats. It will "forget" the bad sectors (when it deletes the FAT or MFT) but will find them again as it formats. Note that a /q format just clears out the directory entries and doesn't actually remove the stored bad cluster information. (Setup doesn't use /q, though)

Well, you learn something new every day, I stand corrected. Sorry!

Not really; the allocated spare sectors don't get cleared, only the bad sectors that the OS had to deal with after the drive ran out of spare sectors to invisibly use. Will; and at the same time those don't get wiped in the long run either, since when the drive is formatted again those bad sectors are rediscovered (often along with some new ones, too...), and marked again, so it won't be necessary to run, say, a surface scan with scandisk or something to "re-mark" OS-visible bad sectors again. Thanks Everyone ... Got the Laptop up and running and going to use software now to discover how bad the damage is that its skipping over. Kind of surprised that there is a piece of software that "could" repair a bad sector, as for it was my understanding that a bad sector was a physically damaged location of a platter. And given that the computer this drive came from looks like it went down a flight of steps, its a safe guess that there may be a scratch on the surface..ha ha. Just really glad that after 2 failed XP installs to the drive and Windows 7 marking/mapping the bad sectors, that this 3rd install of XP seems healthy now.

* I didnt reformat the drive, Windows XP detected a prior install and I performed a repair install from here on building off of the prior bad installation vs reformatting and all is well!Quote from: DaveLembke on August 19, 2012, 09:09:10 AM

Spinrite and it's author are not something I would call a source of "trustworthy information". it's 80% hype, 10% dangerous, and 10% real substance, but that 10% can be found elsewhere from firms that aren't doing a drunkards walk across IT. At the very least, looking at the history and claims made by the author should give any prospective user of the software pause.

Good evening CutAndDry and welcome to CH

Thank you very much for your information you posted. You are getting the crash from the game as you know and that can happen for a couple of reasons.

#1... This is a personal preference. I do not trust any tool bars I would UN-install any and all toobar's for one (they are full of spyware and adaware). These other programs that I would also remove PC Speed Up, Uniblue, Game Booster 3 and in my opinion IObit is not that good for a AV suite if that is what you use there are much better ones out there.

#2... Is your video card is that a add-on card or is your video being used is on-board (integrated into the motherboard). The one that is listed I believe my be a add-on card the "NVIDIA GeForce GT 420" if you have both get the add-on card drivers.

#3... I would go to your PC manufacture web site and download the drivers for your PC. When you go to install them do them in this order: Chipset>video drivers>sound drivers> NIC card (network interface drivers)> Modem drivers etc.

#4... I would also go to the game's web site and see if there is a patch. A lot of times when they make a patch it will fix game play issues etc.

#5... I would also download and install then scan with Malwarebytes from here http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=malwarebytes&platformSelect=Windows&tag=srch%3Ba&searchtype=downloads&filterName=platform%3DWindows&filter=platform%3DWindows by the way what is your AV suite? (antivirus suite)

Your dump files all point to the drivers crashing once you are done try the game again and please let us know how you make out, Mike

Solve : No input from keyboard during boot?

Answer»

I've just replaced my old media KEYBOARD with a standard MICROSOFT wired 600 USB ONE. It works fine once Windows (XP home edition) is fired up, but not while the computer is booting up. I've tried advice given elsewhere to uninstall the driver and get it reloaded while starting up; the new driver duly arrived, but it hasn't solved the problem. Do I need to do something to the BIOS, and if so _a_ what, and _b_ given that hitting a function button during the boot sequence how do I get at BIOS? Or what else do I do?

BothI'm not sure what that means. If the old one was connected via ps2 and worked and the usb does not, it probably means that either the bios isn't SET to recognize usb at boot or if it's an older system it may not support usb at boot.Quote from: isambardcat on August 19, 2012, 03:21:35 PM

Solve : used tower problem?

Answer»

I recently bought a used custom computer here are the specs:

Motherboard is Asus A7n8x-x (win XP)
CPU is AMD XP 2500+With custom copper heatsink
Video Card is a Nividia FX5200
Just bought 2GB of RAM (PC2700)

I also bought a used Dell monitor and when I hooked up the monitor to my pc tower the monitor displays "In Power Save mode move the mouse or press the keyboard to continue". But when I move my mouse or press a keyboard key nothing happens. Dont think its the monitor because it worked before i bought it. what can i do to GET my keyboard working to get out of power savemode ?Good evening flex101 and welcome to CH

OK when you START the tower by the power button do you see 1 steady on light and 1 that blinking? But the PC or monitor ran before you brought it home than check the monitor CABLE. I CHECKED Asus web site and if the MoBo # is correct it does not have built in video. But the video card may have 2 ports on the card try plugging it into the other monitor plug.

Do you get hear any beeps. Or are you not getting any power light on the front of the PC?

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike

Solve : Can't connect a second monitor?

Answer»

I have an AMD Radeon HD 6700 series video card, and the AMD Catalyst software controls my displays. I have a VGA monitor plugged into the graphics card, and that is the only display that works. I have a DVI PORT and an HDMI port on the graphics card, as well as a mobo integrated VGA port, DVI port, and HDMI port (which I find strange). The mobo integrated VGA port doesn't work, and NEITHER HDMI port works. I don't have a DVI monitor to test the DVI ports.
The AMD Catalyst program won't autodetect the other displays, and I've tried to force them to be recognized, but I can't do that either. I've fooled around in the BIOS settings, but can't find anything there, either. My drivers are up to date, and windows 7 recognizes AMD Radeon HD 6700 as my display adapter. If you need any more info, tell me where to find it on my computer and I'll gladly give it to you.Good evening RamboMarino and welcome to CH

Just in-case you do not know when a add-on video card is USED all on-board video ports are disabled automatically.

So in order to use multi displays you must connect the monitors to the add-on card. This may help you http://www.amd.com/us/products/technologies/amd-eyefinity-technology/for-consumers/Pages/what-is-eyefinity.aspx

Hopefully this helps you, Mike Hm, I just fiddled around with a the AMD Catalyst program some more, and i got a pop-up message saying that an AMD driver is not loaded on my system. I was under the impression the Catalyst program was the driver package.Good evening RamboMarino and welcome back

Just go to the manufacture web site and get the drivers and software for your video card.

Some companies MAKE a complete package (software / drivers / ccc etc)

Some make you download and install separate packages.

Hopefully this helps, Mike

Solve : Printer cannot communicate with computer?

The topic is the error mesage that I receive when trying to print. This is a DELL pc with XP and a Dell V310-510 Series printer. I can print a TEST page, but nothing else. You do not mention your operating system. Also is this a problem that has only now arisen and it had worked fine before now? If so what if anything has been changed coincident to this problem occurring? Here is a link to a Microsoft site that can assist in fixing windows problems with printers.

truenorthGood evening trusky and welcome to CH

I would un-install the printer drivers / software. Dell may have a driver update http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriversHome/NeedProductSelection?fkey=Drivers_PS Just put in your service tag and then pick your OS.

Most usb printers you have to install the software first then when asked you plug in the printer and it will finish.

It sounds like 1 of 2 things has happened #1 the usb cable is bad or #2 the drivers maybe partially corrupt.

Most likely it is a bad driver, Mike Quote from: truenorth on September 06, 2012, 05:40:28 PM

Solve : connect my laptop output to TV, what hardware do I need? TV is Sanyo DS31650.?

Answer»

Diggin' up bones after a year and 5 months of using this cable. lol.
This cable has been working fine for me on this laptop that I've been using it on which has a 7 pin S-Video output (HP Compaq 6715b - in specs).
The laptop I want to connect it to now (HP 2000-299wm - in specs) has only a 15 pin VGA output. What adapter can I use to covert VGA to 7 pin S-video?
I found this adapter on the svideo.com site where I BOUGHT the cable, but it has a 4 pin S-Video output according to the picture shown. I guess I need help finding the correct adapter with a 7 pin S-Video output? It would seem to me that your least expensive way to deal with this latest connection issue would be to purchase a video/audio cable that is compatible with the new equipment. I do not know if such as cable option exists but i strongly believe it would. Rather than us searching all over the place for you i suggest you seem to ALREADY been using the services and products of a company (svideo.com) that you have confidence in. I would call or e-mail them and explain you new configuration and see what they propose.truenorthSee PC to TV Connection Guide: http://www.svideo.com/pctvcables.html
No solution. To further add to your knowledge here is a link to tv/computer connection options.
http://www.geeks.com/techtips/2005/techtips-SEP22-05.htm
Apparently if (and it is a big if) a conversion from VGA to S/video can be done it will be influenced greatly by the ability of the video card (see http://www.computercasesandcables.com/ccc/CV-25120.html ). Further research tends to INDICATE if a picture can be generated on the TV the picture quality may be far less than desired. truenorthAfter reviewing the information from you both and researching some other options, I really don't see a solution that will be worth the $. I suppose I'll just have to keep using the HP 6715b to watch DVD's on the TV for now. Also, I'm trying to save $ for a new desktop build to mainly be used for [emailprotected] for our team, but I'll now add consideration for Mboard connectivity options to do this task with that machine if possible for low $.
Thanks again to you both!!!

I originally thought I may be able to do it for ~ the same $ as I paid for the 7 pin S-Video to 3 RCA cable that I bought back in 2011. But I can make due with what I have for now. Solve : Can Dual Channel be really enabled with mismatched Ram sizes??

Answer»

So last night I brought a COMPUTER back from the dead. It was a tower that was thrown away after the user said it got struck by lightning and wont work. I offered to take it off there hands if they are just throwing it away and I'd dispose of it for them. They gladly accepted since dumps charge to get rid of computers these days.

I was able to get it running after removing the dead 56k modem that had burned traces. I was amazed that the power supply and everything else was fine and this 56k modem was what was keeping the system from booting and the damage stopped at the modem and didnt blow out the PCI bus.

I contacted the owner and they said they dont need the computer I can still have it since I felt guilty that it was just a bad modem causing it to fail to boot. So it is a Core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz E4300 HP Pavilion a6010n Tower with Vista and it came with 1GB ( 2 x 512MB sticks of 533Mhz DDR2 Ram ). The minute I got word that it was mine and the guilt was gone that they might want it back if it was this simple of a fix I dug into my spare parts stash and loaded it up with 533Mhz PC-4200 Ram and a GeForce 8400GS PCIe video card and even dug out a Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz E6600 that I will probably upgrade it to when arctic silver shows up from newegg.

I installed Ram into all 4 Ram slots, but I was like well it will be single-channel with mismatched sticks but 2.5GB of Ram is BETTER than 1GB dual-channel, so I installed a 1GB stick into slot 1, and 512MB sticks into slots 2, 3, and 4. I then booted it off of knoppix to run the memtest86 which is built into it to make sure that of the 4 sticks, each stick plays well with others as for mixing sizes and brands is just asking for trouble usually, but SOMETIMES they play well with others. Memtest86 stats show DUAL CHANNEL ENABLED and its passing all the memory tests.

So... Can you actually run Dual Channel with mismatched sized sticks as 1GB, 512MB, 512MB, and 512MB populating all 4 Ram slots or is this false INFO? I assume that if memtest86 is happy with it, maybe it is running dual channel with mismatched Ram. The 1GB stick I would have thought would break the ability to dual channel as for it was my assumption that dual channel only worked if you had LIKE size Ram and slots 1,3 or 1,3 and 2, 4 populated.Simple answer...No.Thanks for confirming this Patio!

I guess Memtest86 LIES...LOL If a motherboard supports Dual Channel, you will get the best performance if you INSTALL matched pairs of identical spec RAM modules in each channel. So if you have 4 slots (2 channels) you can put 2 x 2 GB in one channel and 2 x 1GB in the other. If the modules in the same channel have different timings or sizes, you will take a performance hit because the usually memory controller will drop to single channel mode. However, memory controllers are fetting more flexible these days, but I guess an HP a6010n is not the most modern hardware.
Memory controllers can use "flex mode" which enables dual channel support (after a fashion) with mismatched module sizes.
This is available on most modern Intel chipsets and should be supported by your system.
In any case, dual vs single channel makes almost no difference even in synthetic benchmarks, so don't sweat it.However "flex mode" is not exactly dual-channel...it simulates it...

But i agree with the last part. Thanks for the info. Going to read into Flex-Mode. Since the original post I ended up downgrading to 2GB vs 2.5GB as for I started having some stabilization issues when multitasking. Now stabile on ( 512MB, 1GB, 512MB, Empty ) as slots populated from 1 thru 4. All sticks were 533Mhz, but the kingston 512MB even though passing multiple memtest86 passes seemed to cause the system to lag and freeze up at times even though memtest said all was well.

BTW ever since going down to 3 sticks from 4 sticks memtest86 now reports Single-Channel mode. And the system no longer lags or freeze ups multitasking.

Now running Windows 7 32-bit healthy and quick on 2GB. And upgraded the CPU to Pentium E6600 Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz for faster processing and 2x the cache.This 2G is all off of 512 stiks ? ?No 2 x 512MB and 1 x 1GB ( 3 of 4 slots populated and 1 empty ) = 2GB

http://ark.intel.com/products/27720/Intel-82945G-Memory-Controller Looked up the chipset of the motherboard P5LP-LE ASUS motherboard and the 945G doesnt have Flex-Memory feature, so Flex Memory Mode wont function on my MoBo.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00864946&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3377270 Here is my motherboard specs etc.
Not to shoot out your sails here but from my experience dual channel only works successfully with dual stiks of RAM and matched sizes/speeds...

Ain't gonna happen in this scenario...www.hwinfo.com will tell you if it's running dual-channel.
(512MB, 1GB, 512MB, Empty) will not be dual-channel unless you remove the 1GB.Kinda said that awhile ago...Quote

BTW ever since going down to 3 sticks from 4 sticks memtest86 now reports Single-Channel mode. And the system no longer lags or freeze ups multitasking.

I just went with single-channel to get stability back. And all is well single-channel 3-sticks making 2GB

Solve : Hardware Requirements?

Answer»

Hi all, great to be here!

Ok, I'm going to be as honest and forthcoming as i can about this.

I currently have:

Pentium Dual core E5700 CPU
Ge-force GT 630 128bt
4GB DDR3 Ram
550W Psu

What i would like to know is can i play games that for eg have a min req of Core 2 Duo or above damage my hardware to any extent? Or is it simply not recommended? I know this may seem like an EXTREME newbie question or the like but honestly i am stressing quite badly about this and honestly have nobody at home or in my area i can ask and get an honest answer. I have been to a PC shop and they have recommended i upgrade to at least an i3 if i would like to play these games with no problems.

Without being funny my finances will not permit this at this stage hence why i am still running a dual core, and as well i am not sure if they have my best interests at hand or are simply trying to make a sale. I have bought 2 cheapish games which on the box it says the min requirements are a core 2 duo. Everything else is fine as far as i can tell, Gpu, Ram etc. The games seem to run fine as far as i can tell with a decent framerate, and the only thing I've noticed is that my CPU fan seems to climb to higher Rpm while playing these games but as i don't know that much about about PC hardware I'm not sure if this is natural or if the CPU is now under excess stress which is causing the fan( a Venom Pico) to run faster. The temperatures i "think" are still fine, CPU 40 - 45 degrees Celsius, gpu 50 degrees while playing. Is this normal or should i be concerned?

Am i causing any damage to the hardware by playing these games, or are these temps normal for these types of games? Should i rather go back to playing games that meet my systems SPECS? I would really appreciate help with this in any way you could give as, as i said i am not able to upgrade at this stage but am saving slowly and will hopefully be able to soon.

Thank you all for taking the time to read this and for any assistance you can offer!
Good morning Jyscalus and welcome to CH

Temp wise you should be OK. Just in-case you don't know depending on what socket your CPU is (model # of the MoBo) you can upgrade just the CPU.

When you go to install the games they will do 1 of 2 things either install and play or it will not work. Just make sure your PC's fans and heatsinks ect are all clean and noise free to keep the temps as cool as possible.

If the CPU fan is a retail box CPU fan / heatsink combo it should keep it fairly cool. If you want spend like 30 -40 bucks for a good copper heatsink with a good fan just to be sure. It is cheap insurance to give you piece of mind

Hope this helps to answer your questions, Mike So i have nearly the same setup (but not an geforce but ATI Radeon 57770 graphic card) and i can play for example guild wars 2 on low very well, but when i switch to better settings, i got 12-18 fps. So the big question is, what KIND of motherboard do you have and is it worth to upgrade anything or invest in a whole new pc (and wait of COURSE).Good morning Paci and welcome to CH

Solve : HELP!! PLEASE!! WINDOWS 7 DOES NOT SEE MY PRINTER ANYMORE!?

Answer»

I did a very stupid thing.

I tried to set my printer preferences to private and instead I set it to Administrator only has control over the printer settings.

Then when I tried to PRINT anything out, WIndows 7 said that I did not have authority, to do so, then I went in as administrator and now everytime I want to print something be it on a pdf, open OFFICE or off an html page I get a "Before you can preform a printer related task you must first install a printer. you have no printer installed, would you like to install a printer now?" when I say yes it pops up and dings at me, "Windows can not install printer. ACCESS DENIED." when I say "no" it just sits there.

If I go into certain html sites that print automatically then I can print, if I have to do a file, print then I always ge this message. I have been able to find my printer, but if I look for it in the control panel, no printer is found and Windows says I can not add any printers.

Please help I've been trying to FIGURE out what to do for weeks now. I know enough about computers to go into the system if you just tell me where to go. Thanks a bunch!

I have a Lenovo I bought less then 6 months AGO, its running the Windows 7 it came with. I have a Cannon all in one printer that had been WORKING perfectly until I screwed up. I will answer any questions you may have about anything asap. Thank you once again to everyone for your time in responding! Go to Control Panel and remove the printer...you will recieve a Warning ...ignore it.
Dis-connect the USB printer cable...
Go to Add/Remove programs and un-install the printer software...

Re-boot...insert the CD that came with the printer and run Setup...
It will prompt you when to connect the printer...do so.

When finished print a test page and re-boot.

Solve : Remove HDD from Sony VAIO PC?

Answer»

Anyone know if it is easy to remove the HDD from one of these all-in-one (all built into the screen) Sony VAIO PCs? I haven't actually collected the machine yet so don't know if how to take it apart is obvious.

This machine is around three years old and was running VISTA, probably Vista home.

The machine suddenly failed to boot with hard drive problems, APPARENTLY the built in (Sony/Vista?) recovery options check-disk took three whole days to run! Just to make matters WORSE the owner doesn't have any Vista recovery disk, no one had TOLD him that he needed to burn his own one.

My current thoughts are to start by transfering the HDD to another machine (2003 or 2008 server) and then see how a check-disk gets on running it from there.https://www.google.com/search?hl=&q=Remove+HDD+from+Sony+VAIO+all+in+one+PC++&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B3GGGL_enUS369US309&ie=UTF-8

Solve : Laptop beeping?

Answer»

Hi I wonder if anyone could help me. I have a Dell STUDIO Laptop 1555 it's only 3 years old. I went to turn it on today and it started beeping at me no sign of any life in it. There were 7 beeps then a short pause before 7 more beeps, continuing on in that pattern. I checked the power supply taking battery off and running from mains, still resulted in the same. I removed the memory modules and tested again running with one in at a time to see if fault was with them and resulted in the same. I'm now at a loss as to what else it maybe other then the motherboard?! Hence me writing this any help would be appreciated. Also if it is my worse thought the motherboard does anyone have any idea, estimate on how much one would cost? Thank you in advance for any help.
Good EVENING Littlemax and welcome to CH

You are not going to like this 7 beeps means a bad CPU either loose or defective here is the link to Dell's site SCROLL down 80% and look for beep codes http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&l=en&s=gen&docid=DSN_7158A89B1BF75F3CE040AE0AB7E13A54&isLegacy=true

I would remove the CMOS battery (not the laptop battery on the bottom) then reboot. The 1 beep is CMOS corruption / MoBo failure. If I remember right the CMOS battery is just a regular CR2032 and is located under the big removalable plate under the laptop. But a new battery for like 3 bucks and REPLACE the battery and while you have it apart use cans of air to blow out the heat sinks and fans.

Please let us know how you make out, Mike Thank you very much for your help, i will certainly attempt this (once my eyes are more awake) and let you know how I get on.

If Windows 7 was installed correctly and the boot instructions were correctly installed to a healthy 80GB hard DRIVE you would be running Win 7.

Is the boot order in the BIOS set to CD/DVD as first boot device, then Hard drive? Sometimes boot order being set to C: drive last can lead to similar issues.
Dear Sir

Bios Set up is WRIGHT after 2 to 3 hrs pc booting with ok but next days same problem with pc Start why?Good morning mayurpanwala and welcome back to CH

This is right down the lines with "DaveLembke" suggestions.

If the "VIA SATA RAID Floppy Driver" was never installed during the W7 set up it will not boot up correctly if the BIOS sata controller is set as AHCI / Raid instead of IDE mode. Either redo the W7 setup with the correct drivers or change it to IDE if this is the case you still may end up re-installing the OS.

Worth looking into, Please let us know how you make out. Mike

I wanted to watch Blue ray but would the resolution have to be 1920x1080 to see blue ray in all it's glory? I have £500 to spend and I am not sure I can find a laptop for that price with that resolution. Thankyou!!Good evening Frankie and welcome to CH

There is a few more THINGS that you may want to think of.

#1... Weight
#2... Screen size
#3... Performance do you need it for gaming or audio or ?

The cost will be different for you than it would be for me (I live in the US)

Here is the link for HP http://shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Laptops/Laptops?SearchParameter=%26%40QueryTerm%3D*%26CategoryUUIDLevelX%3DjeEQxXjbj14AAAE0syxcZzOW%26categoryusagelaptops_dte2%3DHigh%2BPerformance%26%40Sort.HPProductType%3D0%26%40Sort.TieredPricing%3D0

You do want a dual CORE CPU and at least 4 gig's of memory and the better units with HD video. The laptops in the 450 - 550 (us dollars) will not have a good separate video card, laptops like that will cost you (1,200+ US dollars)

Hope this helps you, but in opinion do not buy a Gateway as they are still having ISSUES because they went chapter 11 many years ago

Solve : Asus Sabertooth 990 FX Problem?

Answer»

I have purchased this motherboard 6 months ago After assembly the system worked good .When I purchased the motherboard the BIOS version was 0705 after 4 days I updated bios to Version 1102 the PC worked well for two days after BIOS update. third day I worked on that PC for 3Hrs & shut down it after use. On same day at night I started PC for the work The PC started with black screen. All fans LED's were running but there was no screen.
I checked everything I cleared CMOS ,replaced Graphics card with same Graphics card from old system yet there was no change .At last I started PC without RAM so that it will give the error beep but it gave no beep. So what is the problem Is there problem in BIOS chip Bios chip upgrade will help? Good EVENING ranko and welcome to CH

I hope this will help you it is possible that the BIOS falsh may have failed even knowing it was a couple of day later. Here try this link http://support.asus.com/Troubleshooting/detail.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=1&m=SABERTOOTH%20990FX&s=24&hashedid=H9GanpgqHG8yN8yQ&os=&no=1722

First of all thanks for your time that you spent answering my question. I saw the link you posted .What the documents at says that I have done .As shown in the pictures shown at the Asus link there is still screen is appearing that means there is something is happening here nothing is on screen I cant do anything without seeing on screen When I tried to open the ODD suddenly tray comes out & goes back in suddenly. This shows that there is Boot failure At current I purchased same board & using components such as CPU, RAM, PSU, Graphics Card with it but I want to resolve this problem As the service in my area is not good hence I am trying to correct the problem on my own RMA is the last option as it is time consuming Hope you will respond MikeGood evening rakno and welcome back

Well I am sorry the info from Asus didn't help. Now you said that tried a different video card and still no change / boot.

But on the MoBo are you getting all 4 led's (power / CPU / Memory / Video card) not the case lights the led's right on the MoBo.
Also after you updated the BIOS did you make any other changes like over clocking either CPU or memory? just like page 2-20

Are you sure that you put the CMOS jumper back to pin 1 and 2 after you cleared it? I am assuming so because you ran the PC for a couple of days. But can't hurt to check.

Because when you removed the memory you should have gotten beeps but when you don't that is not good. That ends up being a corrupt / defective CMOS.

Hope this helps, Mike Quote from: hartbeatmr on August 31, 2012, 03:38:59 PM

Thanks again..............
I have never overclocked the CPU OR RAM .After clearing the CMOS I have put the jumper to position 12. OK if CMOS is corrupt OR defective what can I do next ? please suggest me solution I called for Asus they told me to go to nearest service center & service center person asks me to bring all part along with motherboard such RAM & CPU we will test then sounds funny .... I can not provide parts such as CPU & RAM because these are currently in use with the new board that I purchase after failure of the first Good evening again rakno

Sorry I am not trying to be a jerk but you missed the one question that I posted.

"But on the MoBo are you getting all 4 led's (power / CPU / Memory / Video card) not the case lights the led's right on the MoBo.
just like page 2-20"

I know that you are using all the parts you would think that this point is is stupid but I am trying to figure something out for you. Because if you got no beeps with the memory out but you currently using the parts (So obvious the parts work still) if you missing any lights / leds that would say where it is not booting thru & PASSED thru that piece of hardware.

The problem as you know you have to be able to see something on the display to recover the bios.

When you used the jumper to clear the CMOS did you take the BATTERY out for a couple of minutes???

Also when you used a different video card to test did you plug in the power (molex) connecter to it.

Hope to hear from you soon,, Mike

Thanks Mike again After clearing the CMOS (i.e. after putting jumper to 12 Position) then I booted PC to check whether the PC is working OR not .When I found that Problem is not solved as stated in the motherboard manual last step I followed i.e. I removed the CMOS battery & placed it again but that was also useless .And about the graphics card I was using ATI Radion 6450 2GB DDR3 graphics card manufactured by the Sapphire. that do not require the additional power it takes power from the PCIe X16 slot So there is no requirement additional power for that Graphics card & I am still using Card

Solve : Fans spinning but no power?

Answer»

When I power on my pc, I hear the fans spinning but no post and display in the monitor. I opened the case and SEE the fans of the psu, cpu, case fans spinning but the fan of the video card is not spinning. The video card gets its power from the motherboard directly and is not connected to the psu. Also I think the hard drives are not spinning, I could be wrong here. I'm afraid that it may be a faulty psu or mobo. I hope its just one or the other. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.Good evening jquin3 and welcome to CH

OK from you are writing you may have a bad video card. If the PC has on-board video remove the video card and plug the monitor into the on-board VGA port and see if the PC will boot.

If the PC still wont boot it try a different PS (power supply)

Please let us know how you make out, Mike Ok, removed the video card and used the on board video. Still no improvement. The hard drives are spinning though and the optical drives are working. Also I FORGOT to mention, once I turn it on, I cant turn it off or restart it with the power button of the pc. I have to remove the plug from the socket to power it down. I still havent tried to use a different psu because I dont have a spare. Good evening jquin3 and welcome BACK

What model PC is your computer (i.e Dell C521 or HP a6400f ETC)

Another thing you can try

When the video card was removed and you tried to boot it did you get anything on the display?

#1... Remove the memory the PC should give you a set of beeps. If the PC does give you beeps put the memory back in 1 stick at a time until you have the failure. There maybe a bad stick of memory. How many do you have.
#2... If the memory is removed and there is no beeps it is possible that the system board / motherboard is bad.

Hope to hear back from you soon, Mike Yeah, there's no display in the monitor whatsoever. Its a built pc so no brand. Tried removing the memories (2gb x 2) but even that didnt elicit an error beep. I'm beginning to suspect that it might be a bad motherboard. I just hope its just the motherboard if that's the case.Good morning jquin3 and welcome back

It is very possible most aftermarket motherboards have a built in speaker so yes you should have heard a beep with the memory removed (these speakers are a round black barrel with a small hole in the top of it) . The PS still may be bad if the "Also I think the hard drives are not spinning" are not spinning. Do you know of someone that has one you can borrow. The reason I am saying this is if the PS is bad you can replace it and be up and running with out re-install the OS. All PS have 3.3, 5,12 and volt wires and one of them may be out of tolerance so lets say the 12 volt side is only pushing 10 volts. Is there a local PC shop if so ask them to test the PS for you. Or if you want you can but a ATX power supply tester like this.

If the motherboard is bad you will have to do a fresh install of the OS if the motherboard is replaced, unless you buy the exact model that you have now. Because the more than likely the chipset will be different, the nic will be different and the same for the sound. More than likely windows will BSOD as soon as it is started because of different hardware.

Not to mention the PS can be bought for around 30-40 dollars on average.

Please let us know how you make out, Mike Yes, I may buy a psu tester to test the power supply. Thank you guys for all the help. I'll post the results whatever happens.

Solve : HP2300n Laserjet - Sometimes it prints its own language?

Answer»

Thinking this might be hardware related because I have tried multiple drivers. Occasionally this printer connected via USB to a HP minitower running Windows XP Pro SP3 will print PDF documents in its own language. That is I will send a print task and it will print and a REPORT will pop out with tables titled

[ Date Due ] [ Scheduled Date ] [ Equipment Number ] ....

in its own language of

[ Ebuf EVF ] [ Tdi f evrhe Ebuf ] [ Fr vjqn f ou Ovn cf s ]

If I select to print a second time it will print perfectly fine. And its not random characters as for DATE = Ebuf to this printer when it acts up and prints in yiddish.

Anyone seen this before and know of a cure when drivers aren't fixing it? I was thinking it might be RAM related to the printer, but if Ram related I would expect it to either work or not work not intermittently printing in its own language. Also whats odd is that it binds letters tight together without proper spacing when it does this so above on Ebuf uf are bound tight with Eb with proper spacing and throughout the document there are many others bound tight and merged with the neighboring characters such as WD, WG, Uj, sp, Mf, gu, se, JT, and the list goes on.

I'd say about 1 out of every 50 print jobs will do this and so its not a severe problem, but its a waste of paper, toner, and time when it happens. My 2100 does the same thing from time to time & only with pdf's. Don't know what the cause is. Turn off the printer & kill the print job. Might have something to do with PCL6. Try PCL5 drivers.

My printer has 16MB RAM & is parallel output to an HP JetDirect converter.Good evening DaveLembke

I have seen this many times. This issue that you are having a a communication error and end up being 1 of 3 things. I know you said that this is happening even with USB but here is the way I always fix them in this order. On some of them I would use PCL5 but normally I use PCL6 but here you go.

1... Reinstall the drivers with the most current ones and install them using PCL6 ones and make sure you use the ones for your OS and bit version (i.e Windows XP 32 bit or Windows 7 64 bit etc).

2... Try another USB cable.

3... If the printer has a jet direct card remove it (Jet direct card takes the network cable RJ45) These may be white or grey with 2 thumb screws.

4... The printers formatter board is failing the formatter board is the one that all the cables plug into.

What "Computer_Commando" is telling you is correct PDF jobs are the biggest failed print jobs. So yes delete the print jobs and start with the drivers for the printer on down.

Hope this helps if you have anymore questions please let us know. Please let us know how you make out. Mike

Thanks everyone. I dug further into this trying the other ports and Parallel acts up with same frequency as USB, and the Jet Direct NIC that is installed is not functioning. Went into setup of the printer and the printer is not detecting this device attached to it. I plugged a Cat 5 cable into it that comes from a 16 port switch and that printers Cat 5 port com is acting dead ( no led lit ). My switch is the type that shows yellow led vs green for 10mbps devices so I know its not connected. Going to remove this non functional jet direct NIC since maybe its related to this issue and print some more. If it still acts up its most likely the Formatter Board.

Also to note I installed the latest version of Abobe Reader to eliminate a PDF induced issue. Also I tried the PCL5 and PCL6 drivers, and both act the same so I stuck with PCL 6.

Thanks for the assistance with this, never knew the Jet Direct NIC was blown. This printer came out of storage and the simplest setup since I am the only one using this printer was to take a USB cable and XP Pro instantly recognized it and I was printing without any issues. I guess someone pulled this printer out of service probably because of the Jet Direct NIC blown and never left a tag on it that its got issues.

I can live with the occasional messed up print if thats what it comes down to. Its better than having to print and walk 75 ft to the shared printer for each print job and then try to figure out what are my documents from others..LOL Well Jet Direct 615n removed and first print job was fine and second one was messed up. Oh well ... as long as its only occasionally happening I can live with it, otherwise I will try to get approval for a new printer since a formatter board even though I could replace myself is probably something the boss doesnt want me doing on the clock as well as the price of one might be more economical to get a newer printer.

Thanks for everyones help... Thru this I found a bad Jet Direct card so this printer had previous issues before someone put it into storage. For all I know it could have been struck by lightning but nothing is smoked on the card. Looked for burned traces and blistered or cracked chips as well as the smell test which nothing seems to point to a smoke show.Good evening DaveLembke

I know you closed the post but just to let you know the HP 615 cards were the covered under HP for a couple of years because they had such a high failure rate.

I have had to replace hundreds of them.

How many beeps are you getting. Please count them the PC can sound long or short beeps.

So am I safe to assume that the PC was fine and there was no changes either hardware or software lately?

Has the PC been MOVED or has anything strange happen while you were using it lately?

So far it seems that Advent does not list this PC any more but I am still looking. But I did manage to find the PC's specs http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/advent/pc/t9306.htm

Solve : HP touchsmart wifi issues?

Answer»

Hello people who read this..
I have been having some issues with my HP touchsmart 520-1040a PC where the wireless internet connection seems to stop working for some odd reason. Sometimes it will work and sometimes it will not! I have no idea what is causing this problem but i have tried driver options, restarting my internet etc. It says no connections are available but i know that there is via other computers in the house hold. It ALSO doesn't seem to see any other wireless networks..
When it stopped working the first time i decided to leave it alone after trying alot of recovery options but nothing helped... The next day it was working and i have no idea why... I also have no idea why it stopped working so any help on this ISSUE would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Tan_ZaVery nice looking computer.Has this always been a problem on this unit? We could go through a process of trying to help with your current issue but i suspect this is a fairly new unit. If it is still under warranty that would be my 1st suggestion-- exercise your warranty options. Are we correct to assume you are using the intenal WI-Fi card for your connections? truenorthYea i am using a internal Wifi card, 802.11n wireless LAN card and yes it is new and a awesome computer APART form this problem. I do not want to rule out my home network either because when i removed my internet from the connections list i could then see every other internet network... But every other computer in the house can connect, just not this one. But yes internal card and the it will sometimes have connection but most of the time it will not.. like at the moment it does not and has been like this for a small while.

Thanks for responding,
Tan_ZaWhile it is not a portable computer as in a laptop it's certainly quite capable of being transportable due to it's configuration. Do you have the opportunity to take it to another location and use another service provider? If no problems arise as none do other than your own one at it's current location then it would seem as you suggest that this problem is only happening with your primary provider. I assume you have talked to them re this problem. If you have not tried it(assume a DSL service) you can briefly remove power to your DSL modem/router and (a minute or two should be enough) then see if the computer finds the modem IP. If modems are turned off they generally change IP addresses when re-powered. In certain instances that can be a reason why a wireless card cannot reconnect to a modem. Another member (computer commando i believe) made reference some time back to changing the computer wireless connection type from static to dynamic as a possible way to solve this type of problem. That MAY be an area for you to investigate.Let us know how things evolve.truenorthAnother would be changing the wireless channel or frequency of the router(not mentioned)?I have done everything that you have told me and it seems to be working quite well at the moment, like i can get signal and have internet etc. I do not really know what was wrong but after restarting router/modem and changing IP to dynamic etc, it all seems to be up and running. I will keep you guys posted if anything else happens but the issue seemed to be solved once the router/modem had been restarted and when i had finished screwing with IPs it seems to work.

Thx for responses,
Tan_ZaGlad to hear it and while we certainly would welcome you back again hopefully it won't be with this issue.Enjoy that awesome computer. Looks like they were trying to emulate an Apple design.truenorthYea its really great except i cannot figure out how to make it read input from a pen/stylus. If i could make it recognize the stylus then i could have pressure sensitivity when drawing in photoshop :S But YEA its really quite a nice machine.

Thanks for you help,

I have a Compaq PRESARIO CQ70, and I think the harddrive has gone bad because the laptop no longer recognizes it in the bios. I was going to get a new hard drive, but I am TOLD I need to install drivers for the laptop and I am a little unsure how to go about this. Can SOMEONE please tell me what drivers I will need and do i install these drivers after installing an OS or before it? Better still give me the link to the drivers I will need. Thankyou!!Visit the Compaq site...select your laptop Model # and appropiate OS...
DLoad the drivers to a USB drive.
Boot to the OS install CD and delete and re-create the C: partition...this will take awhile.
Then continue with the OS setup...follow all prompts and re-boot.
Then re-install all drivers...Chipset drivers go 1st !Good evening Frankie

Just like Patio stated you would need to get them from HP/Compaq here is the link just pick your model and afterwards the OS and correct bit version http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/ProductList.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=135&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3768171

Don't forget besides needing the drivers you will also need your OS disk(s) if you have the original restore disk(s) that will make your life a little easier / quicker.

Well hope this helps, Mike

Solve : Need Advice For Upgrading my computer?

Answer»

i want to upgrade my computer to suite the common games of today such world of Warcraft and LEAGUE of legend but i honostly i have no idea what

should i upgrade first SINCE hardware isnt my thing ..... anyway i made a list here so any advice what i should upgrade first ?? .. :

Graphic card : GEFORCE 7025 / nForce 630a

Processor: AMD Sempron(tm) 130 Processor, ~2.6GHz

Memory: 2048MB RAM

Mother Board : BIOSTAR N68S3+

so what do you think is the worst here and need argent upgrade ?? ... sorry for taking so much of your time Good morning yogiho2 and welcome to CH

IN my opinion

Upgrade the CPU like a Phenom II X4 (around 106.00) CPU and fan
You can burn out the on-board GPU chip playing some of the games like WOW etc put in PCIx video card like a HD 6870 (ATI version) or the equivalent of a NVidia card in like a GTX-560 etc. (around 180.00 to 200.00)
Upgrade the ram to 4 + gigs keep one thing in mind a 32 bit OS will only 3 to 3.5 gigs and 64 bit can see 4+ gigs. Youe MoBo has a max of 8 gigs. (For 8 gig's of memory 2x4gig sticks is about 45.00)

And no you are not wasting are time, If you have any questions please let us know. Mike What power supply do you have in your computer? We need to know that before we COULD advise what to upgrade, in case your power supply can't power an upgraded power hungry CPU or graphics card.
Please note your motherboard does not support the Phenom II X6 CPUs as its power circuitry is weak, the higher-end X4 CPUs will also push the board's capabilities, although they are supported.
As above, the CPU and graphics card both need upgrading in order to play modern games, you could also do with an additional 2GB+ of RAM.

Well, Basically it's not just CPU-Z, GTA IV is also showing them both together as 2Gb total when it should be 6GB so i don't think it's a fault in CPU-ZHello again

Sorry Mike

I Don't think that's it as I disconnected both cards and tested them 1 at a time and they still showed as 1GB cards each.

On a side note, DXDiag is reporting them as 1670MB Cards, GPU-Z is reporting them correctly as 3072MB Cards, Catalyst is reporting them correctly as 3072MB Cards.

I'v contacted Sapphiretech so hopefully they can tell me. God I hope it's not the MOTHERBOARD because I researched it quite hard and found people running 7850 Crossfire setups so i figured a 7950 would be fine on it. You'd think a $380 motherboard would support all GPU's.Sorry for double post, above post won't let me edit it.

Just did a 1280x720 test on 3DMark and it would appear my system is actually out doing a lot of the systems on youtube. From Motherboardsorg Sapphire and XFX 7950 benchmark tests they got 12075 and I got 13170.

So now my question changes, could it REALLY be my GPU's affecting my Gameplay FPS? Because from these Benchmark tests it appears my GPU's are actually running better then they should. Perhaps it's because DXDiag are showing them as 1670MB cards, I BELIEVE games would read my GPU memory off the same place DXDiag does right?Good morning BennyF

Well MS does have a update for DXDiag it can't hurt to try it http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35 or maybe Sapphire has BIOS update for the video cards? Something has to be doing it. I honestly do not know if W7 uses DXdiag or uses the 64 bit version to tell the game what your hardware is or not.

Did you check dxdiag 64 bit and see what it says? Just in-case you don't know where it is just run dxdaig as normal and when it opens look for a button on the bottom for 64 bit.

Mike It says 1670MB as well.

It would appear they are performing really well in some games (160+FPS in DiRT3 with ALL max settings including AA) but not so great in others (32FPS in Ghost Recon Online High Settings, 40FPS in GTA IV Maximum)

The Frame rates are improving without anything being changed it's just confusing me what is causing this. The real test will be what they hit in BF3 after I reinstall it as I know exactly what they're meant to hit on BF3.Possible flakey PSU...Have you tried the graphics cards individually?
Also, check your BIOS for any memory remapping or memory hole options.
Is the FULL 16GB of system memory showing under Computer Properties? How about in CPU-Z?Hey guys, I worked out that for almost everybody the 7950's are showing as 1Gb cards but performing as 3Gb cards. After a quick tweak (Actually lowered the OC editions from 950 to 925MHz) they're hitting 150 frames in BF3, (110-120 during heavy Multiplayer battles). 160FPS in DiRT3, 157FPS in Shift 2 and 182FPS in NFS The Run, and the ultimate test, 703FPS in Minecraft xD

Still a little baffled why GTA IV seems to only run 60FPS no matter what I do.Probably a limit of the game itself...

Solve : Cooling a server closet.?

Answer»

Hello to all. I have a simple question.

I currently have 5 servers, THREE of which are high density (1U) and two towers that i will put in the rack with them, and i am planning for expansion soon. My question, how would i cool the area the servers are in effectively. I hope to not run a DEDICATED A/C yet, so alternatives would be NICE.

The closet i am referring to is a small ROOM, the size of a small bedroom. I currently have 1 rack of equipment, the servers and two large network switch chassis.

This fills a rack quite nicely, so any other equipment i get would be in a new rack.

Any advice is appreciated, Thanks. Good evening zeroburn and welcome back to CH

If you don't want to run a ac right now you may want too.

#1... If there is door on the room you could put a louvered door in it's place like this
#2... Put like a 20" box house fan in the windows to pull the hot air out. The one fan I am talking about are like the ones that you buy at HomeDepot, Lowes etc and are around 25$ Like this

Hope this helps, MIKE

You can usually print a test page and / or reconfigure your printer. Have you tried this ??

Also, whats the make and model? This may be able to be resolved and you can regain the USE of your printer. But then again you may not. The FIRST thing to do is with fresh cartridges inserted using the aforementioned test process do multiple print tests. Could take up to 20 or even more. If after 20 with no improvement then your options change. By the way if you begin to see anf colours appearing that is a good sign keep up the tests. However in many instances you may NOT achieve all the primary colours. What the process is doing is trying to clear the print heads which is where the problem is.Ink has dried in them and will obstruct flow. The NOZZLES are minutely small. Two tips for future ink jet printer use. Always do a print task on a regular basis (once a week should suffice). Secondly if the printer is on but there is no intention to use it WITHIN half an hour turn it off. When a printer is on the print heads are not in the park position (as they are in the off position) and therefore are not protected as well from evaporation as they would be in the off position. Some ink jets can use head cleaner solutions to assist in opening heads but not all do. Some ink suppliers can restore heads with cartridges with the cleaner in them instead of the ink and sometimes can flush the heads. However again not all ink jet printers can use this process.Patience is a requirement here. Good luck, truenorth
P.S. Actually before doing the print test procedure do at least 7 head cleanings then try a test print.

Solve : Hinge broke HP 6480 All-in-One Printer?

Answer»

Both hinges broke when closing the cover (the cover that provides access to the cartridges, not the cover that covers the glass.) Now I get a error 'cover not closed' so printer don't work unless I press down on the left back corner of the cover which clears the error.

A parts diagram, electrical schematic, a workaround (disconnect switch?) or part numbers be great. Can't find any of this or even any pics yet this is a common problem. What company would sell replacement part(s)?

Thanks

JTry a magnet...on or close to the left corner. good evening jtasus09 and welcome to CH

OK i have 2 full DVD's of printers and I do not have that model. But I can help you some here is the link for HP parts surfer but there are many versions of your printer so look on the label for the model # i.e CM748A etc. http://partsurfer.hp.com/WSearch.aspx?Wchar=Y&searchText=6480%20All-in-One%20Printer just pick your model and look for the hinges. But just to let you know on those printers 9x out of 10 you can not purchase just the hinges you would have to buy the ADF assm.

Hope this helps if you need anything else please let us know. Mike UPDATE the model of the HP 6480 is CB053A. However can not find any diagrams or parts anywhere. A parts diagram would be great.

(Patio - what would the magnet do, hold down the cover or interfere with the switch or was this a joke?)

Thanks all-

JGood evening jtasus09 and welcome back to CH

I don't think patio making a joke

What I think patio was talking about was using a magnet to hold the switch / micro switch in the closed position. If that does not work some ADF assm do not used magnets instead they may use a NUB on the ADF assm that goes into the top of the printer that pushes a micro switch (closed position) so the printer can run. If that is the case you may be able to put /wedge something in the hole in the printer and tape that piece still.

The only pic that I can find is this one and it looks like the nub I am talking about is in the back left of the printer.

SORRY I have found no service manuals and no images that show a brake down / part diagram. This issue you are talking about (broken hinges) is wide spread issue on this type of printer and you are not alone. As far a finding and disconnecting the micro switch well it may work using the printer with out this switch but in most cases when i have done this the printer will not boot or it does boot but thinks the lid is not closed (because it is unplugged) the best bet is to find where the switch is and try tapping in something to close it etc.

I wish I was able to find out more for you, Maybe SOMEONE else may be able to get the manual. Mike

If I do come up with a web site that has the manual etc I will let you know. Thanks - I'm dying for some info. The wedge thing may be the answer, I looked in the slot and did see a little wire or such so must be a switch. I'll experiment and wedge something into the slot with cover not closed see if error clears. If that works be great.

Regards,

JT Solution to broken hinges on hp 6480 all in one printer
If you remove the top half of both hinges the cover will settle into its natural position and the open cover alert will go away. You are good to go just need to hold the cover carefully when changing the cartridges.

There are 10 torx screws, this alteration should TAKE less than 10 minutes. Start with removing the little tab on the outside back of the printer at both hinges. This will expose two more screws on each hinge so remove them (only four to go.) Now open the cover and remove two screws from each hinge while holding the cover carefully so you don't YANK on the ribbon cable. Try not to drop these screws inside the machine.

If you have only one broken hinge still remove the top half of the hinge, just break it will be 10x easier than disassembling it.

JT

Solve : PC - fan running, screen black?

Answer»

Hewlett Packard Compaq Presario SR 1000
Microsoft Window XP
Home Edition
Version 2002, Service Pack 3
2.19Ghz, 1.00GB of RAM

ACPI Uniprocessor PC
AMD Athlon ™ 64 Processor 3700+
NVIDIA GeForce 6200SE TurboCache™

My current monitor is a LCD, Plug and Play monitor, manufacturer: standard monitor type, model WJ1780PI, D-12055 - one straight wire connecting to a VGA port.

Hello I have posted a thread on this already on advise on how to set up dual monitors.
Guess what after over 7 years my PC will now not switch on.

All I did was had a look at the back in order to take a picture.
Tried switching the VGA into another slot it see if the slot was enabaled. It wasn't and so swapped it back. When I removed and inserted the cables each time the PC was switched off. When I plugged in back into the original VGA slot and switched the machine back on it was working fine.

Have updated version of Norton and the day after switched it on and the fan is making a hugh racket folowed by i think some clicking noises and there just REMAINS a black screen on the monitor.

Switched it off and waited a wee while, checked the cables and tried again.

Day after that got some dust removal spray for computers and gave it a good spray and made sure the airways are clean. Done this before in the past.

The very next day switched on and still the same situation - fan running really loud, followed with I think a few clicking sounds - not sure which part the fan is running, base unit has a green light, amber light on the monitor, black screen.

What could have happened. It was working fine after I put the VGA slot back into the original slot.

Could it be the power supply, CPU overheating.
Good morning meaner02 and welcome back

Please don't take this the wrong way and i am not trying to be a wise guy

If I am understanding you correct you removed the video card and put it in another slot and it didn't work? If the model you have in the listing is correct the card will not fit another slot you only have (1) PCIx slot. But if the video card was a regular PCI slot than that may have been possible here is a pic of your MoBo (motherboard)

If your video was working before that video card CAME out and is not working now you just may need to re-seat the card. It most cases when the card is put in the slot almost NO gold contacts from the card show be showing. Plus if the video card had a power connector it must be plugged back in. Most video card the power connector is at the end of the card and can take a "molex connector" or a 4 pin power plug or a 6 pin PCIx connector.

Here is a 4 pin connector

Here is a 6 pin connector is

Here is a molex connector and the molex connector comes in white and black ones

Now if you are using a add-on video card the monitor must be plugged into the the video card ports if you are using the on-board video then the monitor must be plugged into that one and looking at your MoBo pic's your on-board video port is under the parallel port the onboard video port is "Blue" the printer port is "Purpearl". Here is a pic of your back panel of your pc if you are saying "slot but really mean the 2nd port on the video card. Here is a twin head VGA video card

Ok if you are getting a green light on the front of the tower some power is making it into the desktop and if the LCD light is orange that usually means no video signal to the display.

If you are getting a clicking sound when turning the PC on usually clicking sounds mean the HD (hard drive) may be BAD and the PC will not boot & yes the monitor will stay orange even then.

On those PC's when they first boot the fans will ramp up and spin really fast then when the PC is all loaded and at the desktop the fans will calm down.

Another thing to look at is shut down the PC (unplug the the cord) the open the desktop case and look in side around the CPU for little rounds cans and they have a + on top these are "CAPS" if they are flat they should be good if they are domed and look like crusty like this those can cause the PC not to boot.

At the back of the PC where you plug in the AC cord there should be steady green light when it is plugged in (this light is only there if it has the original PS)

Please let us know how you make out and let us know how you make out. If you have any questions please come Back, Mike

PS hopefully I didn't bore you are throw to much at you meaner02 - is just lack of display, or is your computer failing to boot up ?
Does it sound like it is booting and entering Windows as yusual ? Is it accessing the HD, for example ?
Does the prolem occur EVERY time you switch on without exception ?

PSU - Octigen 300W model 10270PSOTG ('upgraded' from original Bestec 250W PSU [in 2011?])
Nvidia GeForce 6200 graphics card in AGP slot. No sorry was no clear - I mean I unplugged the cable from the VGA slot and plugged it into the integrated VGA slot that I believe now is not enabled. I unplugged it popped it onto the the original VGA slot and it was working fine. Next day - no.

Yes the fans do start off loud and then clamp down, in this case that does not happen and keeps on running really loud. Green power light on the monitor and then after the 2 clicks the light changes to amber and then get the message on the screen appears - no signal.

I will check the rounds cans and let you guys know - thank you.

Solve : How to install bluetooth printer from Windows XP to Win7 Laptop?

Answer»

Hi, I'm on a WIndows XP pro desktop SP3, and have a HP Photosmart C5580 all in one printer with BLUETOOTH, and I'm trying to install bluetooth on a Windows 7 laptop, in order to be able to remotely print stuff from the laptop on the XP desktop printer.
I installed the bluetooth program from HP onto the laptop, but when I try to print something the laptop will not detect the bluetooth at all, in doing a search for devices, in fact it doesn't detect any printer software at all, I have been searching google for info, but I'm not having any luck finding HELP....
I admit I have no experience with bluetooth and could REALLY use some help with this....
Thank you!Does the laptop have bluetooth ? ?
I'd visist the manuf. site to make sure and then DLoad and install the BlueTooth drivers...

Remember to re-boot.Patio, the guy who has saved my COMPUTER bacon so many times I cannot recall how many, great to see you still AROUND here!
Thanx, I will check that....Thanx for the Kudo's...let us know.

Solve : HP Laptop LCD compatibility?

Answer»

New to the forum, so I apologize if this is the wrong section.

Is the LCD display from a 15.6" DV6000 compatible with a Compaq Presario CQ61?Good evening azrael and welcome to CH

They are not the same. The inverter and the cable are different. Each of the laptops that you have listed will have 2 or more different sub models

If you need one for the DV6000 you really want to do a search for the whole model number on the bottom of the laptop it will be something like DV6-9317CL etc and the same will hold TRUE if the screen you want is for the CQ61 they have many sub models etc

Sorry on the BAD news, Mike Quote from: hartbeatmr on AUGUST 20, 2012, 10:39:11 PM

Thanks Mike, no need for apologies Thank you for the QUICK reply. I figured that would be the answer, but you can chalk it up to laziness on my part for not stripping them down to find out for myself

Thanks again!
