Solve : Fan speed??

Answer» OK So i Had a motherboard failure with an Asus P4P 800 SE and decided to replace it with a HP motherboard I had sitting from a hp d530 Sff. I'm not able to log into windows but my question is can I set the fan in the CMOS setting to run all the time its on? Because It seems to turn on only when the CPU is really hot But i want it to constantly run? Any help? How are you monitoring CPU temperature? How hot does it get?

I have an HP Compaq d530 CMT and it runs cool and always runs quiet. I occasionally check temperatures with CPUID Hardware Monitor.

Regarding the BIOS, I'm not aware of a setting to control fan speed but I may have overlooked it or perhaps your BIOS is different, ALTHOUGH I'm very much inclined to think your model and mine have the same BIOS because they are both d530 series systems. Here's a very detailed USER guide on the d530 series: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11632_div/11632_div.html

Have you opened the case to see whether it needs cleaning on the inside? Is the computer sitting where air flow around it is not significantly restricted?Running your system too cold is not recommended.Quote from: Geek-9pm on October 20, 2010, 09:23:48 PM
Running your system too cold is not recommended.
Do you have a reference to support that statement? And, why is cold even being mentioned here? The post infers cold. The opposite of hot.
Everyone knows you must not let a system run too cold.
Shall I Google that for you?Quote from: Geek-9pm on October 20, 2010, 09:23:48 PM
Running your system too cold is not recommended.

This statement is REDUNDANT; doing something that is too anything is by definition not recommended. Jumping too high, flying too low, eating too much, speaking too loudly, whatever, all these are "not recommended" by virtue of the word "too", which means "excessively". If something is excessive then it is more than is (depending on context) wise or allowed or recommended. So... first define "too cold", and second state how a practical computer in everyday use in a normal environment might be run at that temperature. Or stand convicted of posting nonsense. (Shall I Google that for you?)

How did piratical and normal get into this disunion?

The post was pure nonsense from the start.
To chart with, he had a Asus P4P 800 SE ...
and decided to replace it with a hp d530 Sff.
[Diane Sawyer sarcasm]
I rest my case.

He had a motherboard failure and was inquiring about using a motherboard that came out of another computer. How is that nonsense? And, please don't just reply with more nonsense, as you previously have done.
Also, cold is not the opposite of hot.

Cold is the absence of heat.

Just my pennys worth.Quote from: Geek-9pm on October 21, 2010, 02:09:46 AM

Are you kind of crazy?

Thank you soybean. I'm not really happy using a Motherboard from an HP but right now I may not have a choice. I might have an Asus I think somewere with a keyboard port problem. I can unsowder the ps2 mouse/keyboard port from the dead motherboard. Quote from: comda on October 21, 2010, 12:55:08 PM

You should be able to use a usb keyboard.

Solve : Graphics card upgrade?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

I just got Test Drive: Unlimited for my PC and everything meets the requirements except my video card, currently I have an nVidia GeForce 6150 LE with 256 MB Video Ram,Windows XP Home SP2, 1 GB Ram, AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3600+ and a Dell computer and I was planning to buy this card: http://www.stonebridgecomputing.com.au/catalog/-p-12290.html, will it work with my PC and will it let me play the game properly? If not, which graphics card do you recommend?

Thanks for the helpyour GeForce...Sadly, is integrated into your motherboard

GeForce 6150 LE

* Manufacturing process: .09micron (90nm)
* Core Clock: 475 MHz
* Vertex Processors: 1
* Pixel Pipelines: 2
* Shader Model: 3
* DirectX support: v9
* Video playback acceleration: HD video acceleration
* Memory: Shared DDR2 (socket 939/AM2) system memory (selectable through BIOS - usually 32/64/128/256 MB)

Your new card, is a PCI-e card...which means your motherboard will have to have this type of slot on it to fit into to work...

So before we even get close to a yay/nay we need to know your motherboard model.

If you dont know how to find this out or dont know yourself, get Sandra from http://downloads.guru3d.com/SiSoftware-Sandra-XII-2008-SP2-(14.24)-download-1391.html and once installed, select hardware tab, and double click motherboard to get a big list of components and specs, then click the disk at the bottom to save a report, and post it here

KurtisThanks for the reply Kurtis, I ran the scan and here are the results:

hmm thats wierd DELL have removed the mainboard info and relaced it with meaningless info...not to despair!

we have this:
System Bus(es) on Hub 1
Version : 2.30
System Bus 0 : PCI
System Bus 1 : PCIe 1.00 x1 2.5Gbps
System Bus 2 : PCIe 1.00 x1 2.5Gbps
System Bus 3 : PCIe 1.00 x16 2.5Gbps <<
System Bus 4 : PCI
that is a PCI-e 16x slot which is exactly what we need

now...TD: U's specs are...

System Specs:
Operating System: Windows® 2000/XP and above
Processor: Intel P4 @ 2.4Ghz or AMD Athlon 2800+
Memory: 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM recommended)
Hard Disk Space: 8 GB free
DVD-ROM Drive: 8x Speed
Video: ATI Radeon 9800 256MB VRAM or Nvidia 6600 GT
with 256MB of VRAM (Video Cards with vertex/pixel shaders 2.x and
above are recommended)
Sound: DirectX® 9.0 compatible sound card
DirectX®: DirectX® 9.0c included

now a 6600GT is a rather old card now...along with the Radeon 9800 as radeons are noe in the 10000's, eg X600 (x as in the roman numeral )

so yes the 8500GT will do just fine for this game

8500GT: http://www.stonebridgecomputing.com.au/catalog/-p-12290.html
8600GT: http://www.stonebridgecomputing.com.au/catalog/-p-12291.html
Although a good card, for a little more ($60.59 for the 8500GT and $93.13 for the 8600GT) you could get a 8600GT 256MB, and although only has half the memory, the memory runs 2x faster (700Mhz compared to 1400Mhz) and the core clock is also faster (500mhz 8500GT compared to 600MHz8600GT) giving you more performance from your games, also allowing you to run more "high end" games than the 8500gt would allow you to also...once you go over 128MB of graphics memory the amount isn't too substantial, especially once you reach 256MB

so the choice is yours!

final answer: either card mentioned in this post will be just fine!

KurtisVery welcome

I am not too familiar with the ATi range at the moment but the next nVidia card up is the 8800gt really...and that's still in the 200's
still...you may like to look at this one...slightly cheaper but most people in other forums claim this one outperforms the 8600gt in most games except for the newest ones like S.T.A.L.K.E.R and Bioshock and such. The only THING is with this card I'm about to tell you about, is it lacks Direct X 10 support which is needed for the newest games, but as you game you want to play isn't so new, it will be great

Please note!:
These cards are dual DVI, which means if you do not have a DVI monitor you will need a DVI to VGA adapter. $5-$15 including shipping here in New Zealand...so wont be alot...the cards used to come with them, but I haven't bought a card in a long time so I don't know if they still do. In fact here is one on your website you chose to look at cards on...

http://www.stonebridgecomputing.com.au/catalog/-p-3901.html

so this will definitely still run your game and way outperforms the 8500GT...though the 7600GT vs 8600GT battle is yet undecided...different computers produce different results and both cards will satisfy your game to the highest settings
http://www.stonebridgecomputing.com.au/catalog/-p-15624.html

Goodluck and remember any decision you make doesn't affect you test drive game...but others, especially newer ones, it will

Kurtis

oh and your original 8500GT?still would need the adapter mentioned in this post Lol sorry I deleted the post above to edit this in, but... I just came across this: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NVIDIA-8800GTX-768Meg-PCI-E-Video-Card_W0QQitemZ160236806030QQihZ006QQcategoryZ40156QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting just then, if I can get a good deal on that would it be the best solution out of the three?

Thanks again It is all very good I was editing it myself...you might want to re read it I already mentioned the 8800GT

tell us what you think of the new post

Kurtis

Edit: oh i see your post not mine Must have skipped the part about the 8800, BTW, is this the DVI cable needed?

appears to be if thats the one you are already using for your monitor..no worries there with an adapter then

if the pins look like this...then yes its a DVI cable and it will work fine

[recovering space - attachment deleted by admin]Mine looks like this: okay...lifes complicated isnt it?

i have done a quick research and found it will not matter!
I posted a picture of what is called a DVI-D cable...You have a DVI-A cable...here is a quote from www.national-tech.com/specs/10v4-05315.htm...

"DVI-A cables are designed to carry only an analog signal. This cable is perfect if you have a newer graphics card with a DVI output but have a monitor that only supports VGA. DVI cables are used with newer video cards and monitors for higher resolution. DVI-D (Digital) can not convert to VGA (Analog). Only DVI-A (Analog) can be converted into VGA (Analog)."

which means it wont support the highest resolutions the graphics card can output, but i find 1280x1024 is all that is needed at the most and your cable will support up to 1600x1200

by the way..the only thing you should be worried about is if the end looked like this ... if that didnt work i attached it anyways

Kurtis

Solve : Fan speed too high!?

Answer»

have just installed new memory and as part of the recommended troubleshooting (only shows 3.25 gig out of 4g) updated the bios; everything seems ok except that the fan speed has doubled from normal 1750 rpm to about 3400 and it doesn't vary much from this. Its orribly noisy and I guess not too good for the fan! Can't see any OBVIOUS way to change this in bios, though I'm not very knowledgable about this, so don't want to poke about too much. I have got speedfan installed but have only been USING it to monitor temps. So do I change in bios or speedfan, or reinstall
bios update? Or .........? Thanks.

Packard BELL imedia 1559 2.8ghz, Phoenix Award Workstation bios, XP proYou will only see 3.2 gigs with xp Pro 32 bit. Xp 64 bit or Vista 64 bit has the ability of using more than 3.2 gigs of ram.

As far as your fan, is there a setting in your bios that allows the computer to adjust the speed of the fan according to how warm the cpu is? I forget what it is called.hejlik:
thanks for yr reply. You nearly made me happy that my os was the problem (at least I knew the answer!) But then I did a google and Bill Gates said
"The maximum amount of memory that can be SUPPORTED on Windows XP Professional and Windows Server 2003 is also 4 GB."

I bought 4g because the Packard Bell web site said that was max for my machine, but of course they didn't know I'd installed xp pro instead of oem xp home ed. So could you tell me where the info about 3.2 gb being max on xp pro is ?
It doesn't really bother me too much about usable ram v installed ram - 3.25 is a good jump- up from 1gb, though I spose some bit of me would like to get my money's-worth; but I'd really like to get back to the
good ol days of fans that only worked when needed.

I have looked again in the bios and all it seems to offer me is enable/disable fan heat control but no further settingsThe max supported is 4 gigs with XP W2K etc....but with a 32 bit OS you will never see 4 gigs. You can only see about 3.25 gigs. Your machine is normal.

If you were running a 64 bit OS things would be differant.

http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000811.html

Is the fan heat control setting ENABLED? yes, enabled................But I'll double check!!!......... ahha! but for some reason smart wasn't enabled in bios . Wonderful, peace again in West Wales! ( the sheep couldn't sleep cause they couldn't hear to count each other).

Solve : Computer turns on but no display??

Answer»

Hey. I have an old computer which use to work perfectly until one day when a power cut wen't in the house. It wen't off then after power was restored, it would turn on but no display would show on the moniter. It's not the moniter because it's showing my other computers display as I type.

Also, when the computer TURNS on, you can HEAR the fans spinning and it making noises but it's a constant loud noise.
I've cleaned the inside out but still no luck. Any suggestions? Thanks.

One more thing... I do not know what make it's since it has no model name on it.I don't know how EXPERIENCED you are with removing components from comps, but if I were you, I would take the power supply out of the comp you are using now and test it in the broken comp.Okay I'll do that. Also, is there any think I need to keep in mind while doing it? Does it matter what power supply you use? Like Dell, Acer, ect.A few of the old dell MODELS have an unstandard main power connector.

Quote

I do not know what make it's since it has no model name on it.
What is the model of the working computer?A power cut can cause power surges with electronic devices, your computer could be ruined in any number of ways.

You already know the Monitor is fine, if you used the same cable you know that is fine too.

Try a power supply you know works, like Linux711 said, if it still doesnt work try testing each component seperatly:

If you have a Graphics Card, test that in a working PC. If it still works its not the GPU.

If you have onboard graphics, test the motherboard with parts that you know work (memory, CPU, power supply ETC), if it doesn't work, you've screwed your motherboard.

Test the memory, processor etc etc only if testing the Graphics card, motherboard and power supply gives you no results (these are unlikally to give you no signal on your monitor anyway)

Unfortuantly things like this happen, pop down to your local hardware store and pick up a surge protected extension board to avoid this from happening. The surge protector controls the amount of electricity that passes through, so you can never have a sudden surge of electricity (hence the name)

Solve : crashed pc?

Answer»

I have a built PC with AN8SLI MB, Winxp 64 OS, has worked perfect for last 2 years. I have (2) 1gig ram currently. I purchased (2) 1gb ram to upgrade to 4gig ram. I powered down, unplugged pc, grounded self..

turn pc on and will only show ABIT loading SCREEN, can not ADVANCE from there. Only other screen i can get to is after holding Del key, shows processor and mem info. I can not move from there, no key works... I was told this is CORRECT memory.

I just wanted pc to work so i put everything back exactly the way it was, but get exact same results, only abit screen, cant get to any menus.

Friend tried to help me, had me unplug dvd, floppy drives, sound. remove mem sticks except for 1. power up retry. Same result, only abit screen or screen with chip and mem info (1024k).

Friend had me take battery out for 5 mins, replace. Same result.

I have tried to swap all sticks of ram in and out. Ram appears to be seated correctly, clips go down by themselfs. ram appears clean, I try to keep inside of pc fairly clean.

My pc does have Abit guru panel on front of pc that has cmos button, i have pressed it a few times but honestly im kinda unsure what this does and im not that advanced a computer guy. I understand basic things like static electricty so dont think i messed anything up as far as that goes.

Im out of ideas, anyone that can help would be much appreciated. THANK you for your time.I have been reading for hours and it appears I am having CMOS issues. I get CMOS error messages, i manually reset the CMOS. (remove battery, swap jumpers, hold 3 mins, reverse process..

Still getting CMOS error message.. anyone wants to jump in and give suggestion, i am all earsPerharps...PURCHASE a new CMOS battery if yours is semi-flat...it could be corrupting the BIOS memory when you reset or power down

Solve : sub monitor?

Answer»

OKAY I HAVE A GOOD ONE I have searched all day for an answer to this an I think I have come up with a solution since there is no solution by a company but before I spend a lot of $$$$ I want to run it by someone else that may know a little more than I do…… OKAY a lot more :+/. I want to put a monitor 7” on the front of my pc to run” AMD OverDrive” program and monitor it on the 7” monitor, and anything else. Like video while rendering, with my 6 AMD processors the hardware doesn’t exist. So what about BUYING a 7” monitor for a car that has a HDMI connection and running off one side of video card I have a 8800gt or I can just get another one (8800) since they are cheap just for the monitor will that work? I read this 3 times and i still don't understand what you are trying to accomplish here...

You have 6 AMD CPU's ? ?AMD 1100T 6 cores***sigh***
Thanx for the additional info...

Once again what is it you are trying to accomplish here ? ?

BTW you do NOT have 6 CPU's...Okay I want to HOOK up a 7” screen to my PCI give up...
Someone else will be along shortly to assist...Several people have tried to do the same thing but the technology doesn’t exist I need to connect a 7” LCD monitor to my computer to monitor in real time the performance of the 5 cores. I haver a 8800gt video card I guess one of the problems is that it’s not PLUG and play one video card two monitore on is a 42” and one 7” the 7’ defalcated to show “AMD OverDrive”dedicated to show “AMD OverDrive”Quote from: manmuzic on June 06, 2011, 04:50:35 AM

Several people have tried to do the same thing but the technology doesn’t exist I need to connect a 7” LCD monitor to my computer to monitor in real time the performance of the 5 cores.
The "technology" is called Multiple monitors and it has existed on consumer machines since at least 1998.

Quote

PCI, AGP, and PCI-E cards are all Plug and Play. Video cards have been Plug and Play since about 1995 (which not coincidentally, was when PCI became the standard bus for new PCs)

And... where is the problem? If your video card has two monitor ports, just plug in the two monitors and move the AMD Overdrive softwares window to the appropriate screen.

HDMI out is never a separate screen, it clones what is on the primary monitor. So you are going to have to have either two DVI ports, a DVI and a VGA port, or two VGA ports for this to work. HDMI will not work because it is nearly always a duplicate of the output for one of the other screens. What if i got another video card and not put them in SLI but keep them separate could I run main monitor on on and the 7” on the other and do like you said just move program to the other monitor? Will that work?Quote from: manmuzic on June 06, 2011, 08:37:33 AM

Yes.... I would hope so. Dual screens WORKED with PCI and AGP cards and PCI-E is programmatically a superset of that.

Does your 8800GT not have two DVI/VGA outputs? No, ... it does have 2 HDMI outs though okay you have gave me the confidence to spend the money an try this out. I was surprised that allot of people have tried to do this but there is no comercal solution to this "plug-and-play" solution that is

The only thing here is the Power Supply, hopefully... A couple of thoughts. Factory powersupplies become insufficient providers when hardware is added to some systems. You replaced the motherboard, installed more memory and put in a graphics card. I`m not a game system homer but I have had problems in the past when I compiled systems when I skimped on the wattage rating. Next thought... when you installed your graphics card did you disable the INTEGRATED graphics in your bios? From your description of the fan being real loud when you turn on the computer, I would say check the thermal paste that is between the processor and the heatsink. Computers have a built in check that causes an automatic shutdown when the temperature of the processor gets too high. This explains why the fan goes on so loud, cause the processor tells it to spin rapidly so it can cool the processor. And when it cannot, which is in your case, the computer shuts down and so does the display.

Also check for dusk inside the computer case, especially on the heatsink (which gets caked with dust sometimes) and also the case fan. Blow it all out with a can of air.

Then replace the thermal paste, use Arctic Silver or any thermal paste that you can get at a computer shop. To find instructions on how to do this, go to your computer manufacturer website and download the manual. Look for replacement procedure for processor

hope this helps

Solve : compaq presario v2000 NO recording device found?

Answer»

I have windows 7 on COMPAQ presario v2000 laptop. I want to use audacity to record some music from the internet, but when I click on it, it says 'No recording device found'. This is strange, cause I thought the sound card would be what audacity uses to record from, so I dont know what to do. Besides on another laptop, a dell inspiron 2200 which has windows xp, everything WORKS fine.

So why is not working on the compaq presrio v2000? I can listen to audio just fine, but I cannot record it.

HELP!!!While waiting for a specific answer, you might wanna travel to audacity forum for any related topics.
http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=9564
Are you using a Beta version for win 7?jason
no i am using a retail copy of win 7. I went to the audacity forum, there is nothing specific to what my problem is. It just told me where to go to select the recording device. The thing is , when I right click on the volume icon, and then on the recording tab, the only thing listed there is Microphone Conexant AC-link Audio Default device

So I have a microphone recording device but not one that I can use to record from the internet. How do I find the driver for such a device, and wouldnt the device just be the sound card?
Sorry I mean the Beta version of Audacity for Win 7.

Quote

In the drop-down menu on Audacity's mixer toolbar, choose “Wave Out” or “STEREO Mix” as the input source. (The exact name may be different, depending on your computer's sound drivers.) When you press the Record button, Audacity will capture whatever sound is playing on your computer's speakers. Note: on Windows Vista or 7, you must choose the required input source in the "Recording Device" dropdown in the "Audio I/O" tab of Preferences ("Devices" tab in Audacity Beta). On Windows, if you don't have a “Wave Out” or “Stereo Mix” option, or if it won't record, go to the system Control Panel and try to enable this option there. For instructions see: Using the Control Panel on the Wiki

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=recording&i=streamingit wasnt doing it, I mean there was no option for stereo mixer, but I finally got it. I right clicked on the volume icon , then on the recording tab and then right clicked in the blank area to show disabled devices and all devices, and then I saw the stereo mixer option, and now everything works

Solve : Bad IBM Thinkpad?

Answer»

My granddaughter has a IBM Thinkpad and the screen is black. When you hit the power button to TURN it on it just beeps once then pauses then beeps THREE times pauses then beeps three more times and pauses and beeps one more time but there is never any thing on the screen. can anyone give me a clue as to how to trouble shoot this? sounds like something got jarred loose.are there access panels on the bottom of the laptopThis site appears useful for IBM Thinkpad users: ThinkWiki

From that site's sublink: Error Codes and Beep CodesQuote

one beep, three short beeps, three short beeps, one beep
* Memory problem: bad DIMM or bad DIMM slot

If the memory module(s) aren't permanently attached to the motherboard, I'd remove them, ensure the connectors are clean, and then reseat them. Remove all power (and take the battery out) before doing this. Take proper Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) precautions whenever working with sensitive electrical components (this includes memory modules and/or chips).

Hopefully you have or can get the appropriate User or Reference Manual for that COMPUTER from the IBM/Lenovo website. It might list BIOS beep codes SPECIFIC for that model and discuss where the memory is located and how to add more or replace the existing modules.I just WANT to thank dahlarbear :)for the advice and the site to check. I new that the beeps had to be some kind of a trouble code but I did not know were to find it. Thank you again for your help. And my granddaughter thanks you.

Solve : PC freezes on Windows XP loading screen?

Answer»

Hi,

the problem that i have is when i start up my pc it will freeze on the Windows XP LOADING screen (the splash screen with the loading bar, just before the welcome log-on page).
This is mostly when i start up my pc manually but if i restart my pc in windows it will not freeze. The other thing i FOUND is when i shutdown my pc and switch on/off my psu and then manually power on the pc it will not freeze i tried this like 20 times or so and no freeze with this method.

the things i already tried
changed the psu but the problem was still there
did run memtest for 40 minutes (in windows it self)
i also did run chkdsk at start up with the /f /r (didnt find any problems i think)
i changed the ram to a different socket also didnt help me out with this problem

if i get in to windows it will not freeze so the freezing is only at the start loading screen of xp. i can also go to in safe mode with the switch on/off method. i also can go to my bios without any problems. but like i said even i dont try the steps of switching on/off the psu sometimes it will boot normally without any problems or freezes. but most of the time it will freeze after starting up manually with the power on button.

What do you think could be the reason for this? I was suspecting the power supply, but also after changing the psu it seems that it isnt the psu. so what else could be the problem i really hope it isnt the mobo cause at this momment i cant get a new one.

i hope someone has a solution for this.
thanksI really don't understand. You say if you reboot from within the OS it boots fine, and if you shut down, power off and then power on it boots fine. What is the option I'm missing? All I can understand is that it has something to do whether the PSU is on or off. When PSU is on, there is power (+5V) SUPPLIED to the motherboard which enables the case power on/off switch to function.hi,

again to make this clear. everytime i start up my pc it will freeze at the loading screen like i said before ( and that the problem i have and i am searching for a fix)

but when i switch off and on my psu and then power on my pc it will not freeze. but if i dont switch off and on my psu it will just freeze at the loading screen of windows xp.
i hope you guys understand my problem. Any USB devices connected to the computer?only the mouse and keyboardCheck the VOLTAGE on the CMOS battery.i just checked the voltage and it seems the cmos battery is dead.
it hasnt any high voltage as i can SEE. but i didnt notice any problems with the bios or saving any changes to the bios.
could this be the problem?Quote from: terabyte on January 15, 2011, 05:15:42 PM

What do you mean by "it hasnt any high voltage"
Battery should be 3.0V. Are you measuring with battery removed & with voltmeter or battery tester?
If it's near 0V, this is mostly likely the problem.i have removed the battery and i did tested with a battery tester. Replace battery & all will be good again. CR2032 is available at every drugstore in North America.ok will do
i will replace this with a new one
i only hope that this will fix the problem
anyway thanks for the great help
i will be informing you if the problems has been solved with this or not

my drives are a seagate ST3320620AS. this is the one that has my operating system on it. 320gb

the other one is a Hitachi Deskstar HDT722525DLA380. it has a 250gb capacity and its completely empty.

now here is the baffling part. both of them show up on my pc under the icon safely remove hardware. yet when i go into My Computer it doesnt show up at all.

ive checked for driver upgrades also so it isnt a driver issue. any help with this or ideas would be appreciated.

If you are able to access your computer's BIOS, do the drives show up in BIOS?Are the drives, perhaps still in RAW?

I had a few brand new drives that did this to me...solution was to go into disk management and format them that WAY

The way to get there escapes me right now though....anybody remember?

Kurtisyeah they both show up in the bios.

and if you could remember how to do that because the only way i know how to format a DRIVE is by installing windows on it or right clicking it on my computer.....which it doesnt show up loldoes it show up in device manager? if it does you could try reinstalling the hardware.click start > click RUN > type in "diskmgmt.msc" without the quotes

on the bottom of the page you should SEE ALL your drives. your new hatachi drive should show up and should be seen at the bottom section of the page and in the left hand column in RAW format. right click the right hand column that lines up with your new drive and select format.Thats the one that should fix it right up The other way into Disk Management is right clik My Computer...select Manage...then Disk Management.

Solve : Swapping chassis and keeping hard drives in place in a network?

Answer»

I'm the new administrator in an office network with a domain controller, a terminal SERVER and less than ten workstations all running XP. A workstation in a conference room has special HARDWARE (all USB) and software on it for presentations, but its chassis is too big to fit in the cabinetry. We've bought a new computer that has a smaller chassis and need to set up a new workstation for a new staff member. The hard drives in these two computers are nearly identical types -- both boxes are same-generation Dells (Optiplex 320 and 745).

I want to simply swap out the hard drives, so that the 'conference room' hard drive stays, although it will be in the new chassis. Then, I'll start to build up the new workstation with the new hard drive (400GB rather than 80) in the bulky older box (XP Pro pre-installed).

My first experimental step of converting the conference room box went better than I expected... almost effortlessly, so far. It had no trouble with the large wall-mounted display, and the EXTRA USB hardware (Hauppauge WinTV and Bluetooth keyboard and mouse) work fine. Of course, the ATI graphics chip that it's looking for on the main board is 'missing', and the system found many cases of "new hardware" (including the NIC). Unfortunately, I'm going to have to discern what the previous administrator's admin password was in order to fully address those. But, I'm optimistic.

The end of the day Friday HALTED my plans at that point. But, that gives me time for a little reflection and advice-seeking...

What sort of issues do you guys think I might FACE, regarding the computer identification, network connections... maybe even Windows license violations (Yikes!)?At minimum you are going to have to run a Repair Install of XP since the HDD came from another machine...
Done properly all your data and apps will be intact...
1 mistake and everything will be wiped but you will have a fresh XP install...so read carefully.

Then again you may get extremely lucky and the machine will boot fine...not likely though.

Best of Luck...Quote

...its chassis is too big to fit in the cabinetry.
Take a saw to the cabinet. More predictable outcome. You can order a modification to the cabinet and the end result, IMHO, is more cost-effective than configuring new hardware and adapting software.

Solve : USB Toy battery problem??

Answer»

Recently I got some cheap USB 'Toys.' You know what I mean. Cheap knock-off of the APPLE i pod and similar things.

Had trouble getting Windows XP to RECOGNIZE the USB device. Until the battery was at full charge. Tried two desktops as well as this LAPTOP. All running SP-3

But now I am thinking it was something else. Default settings, hardware drives or something. I am terrible at keeping notes.

Sp my question is -
Would having a under changed battery stop a cheap mp3 player from working in Windows?

My old iRiver T60, though not cheap, needs a full battery in order to be recognized by my computer.Could be that the USB draws power from the device as opposed to the computer (STUPID if it does), which would explain why it will not recognise unless full battery.
Best solution? Buy an ipod
Seconded!

Or a reliable iRiver T60
Or a Sandisk Sansa Fuze. Windows can recognize mine even when the battery is completely drained.

My old computer motherboard DIED. Bought a new DESKTOP and pulled out old hard drive and made it into an external. I'm only able to view my files on the old hard drive by selecting each one individually and TAKING ownership. Is there a way to take ownership of the entire drive without having to select each and every file? They are not password protected. I have hundreds of pictures and music files. I'm running Vista Home Premium. I appreciate everyones help. Thanks a lot. Try booting into Safe Mode, right click on the Drive, click Properties,
then look in Security and take ownership as well as Add your user name

I have and Acer Aspire 3000 laptop that no longer has a great connection with my power cord. Power light signifying electricity is getting in there COMES on only as the cord gets jostled around. I have had to crack this puppy open frequently in the recent past due to a faulty cooling fan. I've also not noticed anything loose last time I was in there. Any suggestions?Where do you "jostle" the cord...at the connection to the laptop / in the middle of the cord? Could be a bad cord / bad connection at the laptop.

Alan <>< the jostling OCCURRED nearest to the laptop. And, upon CLOSER inspection, there was a definite indentation in the cord. Solve : No Video - Compaq nw8000 Laptop?

Answer»

Compaq nw 8000 laptop with a Pentium M processor. Video stopped working after traveling with laptop in back of car. I try to boot up the laptop and the green light with the cd disc symbol comes on. Shortly after, the orange light with the lightning (power) symbol comes on. The green light then goes out followed by the orange, nothing. The fan does come on through this whole process. The computer sat for about 4 months. I just took it out again to do some troubleshooting. It booted up normally. I then moved my hand to log in and bumped the side of the laptop. Immediately, the video went out and the fan kept running. I turned it off and TRIED to boot it up again and I am back to the same thing, green light then orange light, then they both go off and the fan stops. No video or sound (beeps) the whole time. Tried reseating the RAM and BOOTING up with just one RAM chip in and it didn't make a difference. As you may know that Laptops are sensitive and should be handled accordingly with care either being used or not, in maintaining software or hardware. The usual No Video issue might have come from the troubleshooting methods DONE so make sure everything is properly seated from slots,WIRES,cables and no COMPONENTS are failing or busted. If no Video still occurs, press power button for 5 to 10 seconds for a better shutdown. You can also remove battery pack and direct connect power adapter and replace old CMOS battery.

Solve : Unknown Crash?

Answer»

A nice confusing puzzle for people, fresh from my computer today. So I'm playing fallout New Vegas, when all of a sudden a CRASH (lol, that doesn't happen often *sarcasm*). But not just a normal program crash, a full system crash. Now what I find confusing is that this crash emulated a system OVERHEAT, screen suddenly cutting to BLANK, high fan speeds and eventual automatic reboot. The only thing is that I have no high temperatures (stress tested last week, inspected & cleaned after crash).

Shall I just dismiss it as a random convergence of program & driver crashes?

[Edit]: Oh and no unusual readings from the PSU. /[Edit]Quote from: Accessless on November 18, 2010, 01:13:05 PM

...Shall I just dismiss it as a random convergence of program & driver crashes?...
Games stress the hardware & software like NOTHING else, so I wouldn't call it random. If it CONTINUES to do it while playing the same game, then you're "on" to something, but can't say what that would be at this point.

Solve : help with monitor problems?

Answer»

My monitor won't stay on. I have to shut the monitor on and off APPROXIMATELY 15 times in order for it to stay on. The power light on the monitor stays on orange. But after turning it off and on several times it turns green and works normally. This only happens once it has been turned off or has been idling for a while. Also I can tell when it is going to stay on because the screen is brighter. Can you tell me how to fix this or is it fixable? It's been doing this for a year. I thought it was my old computer but is still doing it even when I purchased another tower.Quote

I purchased another tower.
Replaced just the tower but same CPU? The most obvious would have to used another monitor first to check the difference. Cable connectors, PINS for the monitor going into the CPU should also be look into. All of the above, plus if you can't borrow another monitor from someone, I've seen some small flat screen monitors at pawn shops for $30 US with a six months guarantee. Cheaper than a NEW monitor, and will probably be useful for other things in the future. If a different monitor works FINE, then you NEED a new monitor.Quote

Solve : Some videos aren't working for me (newbie)?

Answer»

Not too clued up on computers so I would be gratefull if you could explain in simple terms

A couple of days ago I donwloaded a program for my Football Manager game called 'genie scout'. Basically didn't like it as I thought it was cheating so I uninstalled it via the control panel.

After that I tried to load up a youtube video, but instead of loading it said I needed to latest Adobe Flash Player (i've NEVER had a problem with videos before). So i installed it and youtube worked again along with most other videos.

But i've found that a lot of videos don't work now. On every forum, if someone posts a youtube video for example all i'll see is a white square with a small icon in the top left hand corner. The same thing happens when i try to load some other videos (of which i can't recall off the top of my head) one example being 'Vshare' videos that i've never had problems with but now it's just the white SQARE with the small icon.

I'm really not SURE what I could have done, but i'm fairly sure it must have somehting to do with me uninstalling that program. I'm sure you all know a lot more than me, so any HELP at all will be greatly appreciated, thanks.Anyone have any ideas? What browser/version?

What browser/version?
Did you try different browser?

I use internet explorer at the MOMENT (not sure if there's more than one version sorry).
I've just tested out Google Chrome and all the videos are working fine on that.
However, I would prefer to carry on browsing using internet explorer because google chrome doesn't play videos from Vshare.

Is there any way I can fix the problem i'm having with internet explorer?
Maybe, if possible, unistall and reinstall it if that would make a difference?

Solve : HP Pavilion dv6445us laptop keeps power cycling without boot up?

Answer»

I have windows vista on the computer. Lately, about two days ago, I NOTICED that my computer doesnt boot up all the WAY. When I press the power button, the LEDs light up, and I hear the fan. About 5 seconds later, the laptop shuts down and then turns on again, again with no proper boot up, at least I think there is no boot up, I cant see anything on the screen.

I have ALREADY tried taking out the battery and the ac cord, holding the power button for 30 seconds to dissipate any static and then just plugged in the power cord. But same thing happens. What should I try next
HP has excellent resources on their web site. Have you looked at the documents RELATING to your laptop and the symptoms?
http://www8.hp.com/us/en/support-drivers.html

I did but I couldnt find anything helpful. THEYVE removed the chat option for hp computers. Anyway, is it possible that maybe a loose connection on the LCD is causing the laptop to cycle on and off
The more common cause is total failure of the battery. The battery has a short and is sucks power from the AC power unit. Not very common, but it does happen. Can you use the laptop without the battery? The HP laptops can run on only AC power.

Solve : Help with Graphics Card??

Answer»

OK guys, so I'm not too sure what's going on, so I need a little guidance on what I should do. I'm not sure if the issue is just with my graphics card, or if it's with something else.

Ok, so guys, I have two monitors connected to my PC, and over the past about 3 days, the dual monitors have been acting funny (only one MONITOR STARTS when I START my PC, then I set the two, then when I restart, it goes back to one monitor), but that's not the real problem.

Yesterday (10/15/10), when I got home, one of my monitors had red and white lines going all over it, you could not see anything, my other monitor wasn't connected. So to check that it wasn't the monitor itself, I cicked the menu button on it, and the menu came up perfectly. To check that it wasn't the cable or the adapter that I have connected, I disconnected that monitor ENTIRELY and restarted the computer, so my second monitor now started up, and it was working perfectly (at this point, I was convinced that it was the cable or adaptor that I had connected to the first monitor.

Well, I fell asleep, now that I wake up, my computer is the same exact way. So then I figured that it HAD to be the computer..

Do you guys have any idea what the problem might be? (Maybe I'll have to change the Graphics card, ect)

I took some pictures and a video (at this point, I had both monitors connected) ,

What's the make and model of your computer? What graphics card to you have in it? Do the graphics card have its own fan? Have you opened the computer and verified the fan is working? Do you have any temperature monitoring software so that you can see your CPU temp and other temps? Does your computer have a lot of dust inside? How long since you cleaned it on the inside?this used to happen to an old computer of mine a very long time ago, i think the graphics card was an Nvidia VooDoo or something. at random intervalsit would come up with a screen exactly like yours. even at this time that computer was very old and chances are the grapics card was DAMAGED because of excessive heat since it didnt have a fan. we had to buy a new grapics card but instead we brought a new computer. if your computer is a newer model then there might be a solution so dont worry but if its a very old system it may be too late

Solve : printer keeps acting up?

Answer»

I've had a Dell 926 AIO printer for about three years and for the past year or so it has worked very sporadically. Sometimes it prints fine, at OTHERS it spits out a blank page or a page with just one or just a few lines on it. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer several times and it will work for a day or so, then reverts to its haphazard ways. The scanning and copying functions work fine. I can't PINPOINT what changed when this problem started. I originally had Windows Vista, now Windows 7 and experienced the difficulty with both systems. When the problem started I got rid of McAfee and switched to AVAST. I would be very grateful if someone could help me solve this problem. Thanks.i had a dell printer that came free with our Dell Dimention 5000. it was a poor printer at best. It was tempermental from the start and we replaced it within a few months. i personally dont think Dell make very good printers and believe that the 3 years of life you have gotten out of yours it very good. but im only SPEAKING from experiance. my reccomendation would be to get a new printer. HP preferablyDo you have the latest driver? Check their website for the most up to date driver and install that. See if it makes any difference. THOUGH it doesn't sound like an software issue. Could it be your connection cable?

Otherwise, sounds like a crapping out printer to me.

Solve : Cant find the dvd drive?

Answer»

I have a little tx1000 laptop. I know they dont have the best track record but it was working fine and then the wifi went out. I figure no problem I will use a usb wifi stick. Well i have to load the drivers for it and the dvd drive is not working. I go into my computer and its not listed. I go to the drivers manager and its not listed there either. I have all the virus stuff, malware, anti spyware, etc. And nothing shows up. Oh and it has vista EWWW.

Help?Try booting in BIOS set-up and check if its RECOGNIZED or not. You may want to re-insert your laptops DVD drive cable(if your familiar). Post back if it did not work on any suggestions, for it may be on the software conflicts.Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
Thanks for the reply.
However.... I loaded the drivers for my clear internet so I could get to the link. I had to fight this thing the whole way, It was locking up and did not download the drivers properly and then would not let me delete the program to start over. I had to pull the battery twice. I finaly got it loaded and now the dvd is back. It is running very slow and locking up a lot. It will not restore saying it has errors. I would like to put windows 7 on it but I am worried it has some kind of hardware issue. I deleted a few files and dug around. I pulled up resource monitor and it is using a lot of memory and the CPU is maxing out as well. I always knew this unit needed more memory. It only has 1 gb but has always worked in the past although a little slow. I wonder if something is sucking up all the resources? Seems funny to be using so much just idling. Please, post some computer info:
- Windows version
- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key , hit Pause/Break key)
- hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")
- security programs in use (antivirus, firewall)

First of all, you need more RAM.
1GB is not enough to run Vista smoothly.
You need at least 2GB.

Then, your CPU usage is extremely high.
The main culprit is Firefox, using 24% of your CPU cycles.

Please, close all running programs and post new Process Explorer log.

Also...

Download Autoruns for Windows: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
No installation required.
Simply unzip Autoruns.zip file, and double click on autoruns.exe file to run the program.
Go File>Save, and save it as AutoRuns.txt file to know location.
You must select Text from drop-down menu as a file type:

Well I took a little time off from this unit. It had me frustrated. I pulled it apart and found that it already had 2 gb of memory, I guess one was bad. I went down to the local computer store and picked up a 1 and a 2 gb. It now works great! Funny sometimes I get caught up in the big picture and miss the obvious.
Now if I can get all the hp bs off of it I bet it would be a rocket.
ThanksBackup what you need...
Use DBAN and Nuke the drive...
Borrow a MS Vista CD that matches the ver...
Use the laptop serial key to authorise...

DLoad and install all appropiate drivers...

Done.

then i definatly think heat my be the problem, you may have to reapply the thermal paste on the heatsink for the card itself. its likely that the card that isnt working may be damagedChain yanking.....
my 9800GT idles at 68 and gets to 90+ degrees under LOAD and I've yet to experience any "damage". 70(c) is not an unexpected idle GPU temp.

SLI probably isn't going to work unless the chipset drivers are installed, considering that for hte most PART SLI/Crossfire are motherboard features as much as they are graphics card features.

Additionally, SLI is unnecessary to have two cards installed and recognized. They should show up in the Display Settings page. (Control Panel->Display Settings)I have actually read posts that say 8800 GTS are quite a power hog and the temp can get upto 110C easy and still no damage so not sure. I am gonna clean my pc later today, Its abit dusty but not much I have the disk to install the chipset drivers, Should I be doing that ?

Solve : how much is this Computer worth??

Answer» QUOTE from: BluerjB on November 16, 2010, 08:51:49 PM
someone called mew wanting to buy it for $70 should i do it?? i think its worth more

Depends on whether or not the Windows 7 is legitimate. If it is, then don't do it. Windows 7 alone is worth more than that. I would take any less than $150. Or, if the caller wants, SELL him the system for $70 without Windows 7.I'll buy it for $80

Solve : Epson NX515 May Be Dead?

Answer»

I have been using an Epson NX515 with excellent results for about a year. Suddenly yesterday, after removing a paper jam, it has entered the following catatonic state:

1) You push the ON button and you get a "blue EPSON screen" for about 5 seconds and then the following message:

X Error
A printer error has
occurred. TURN off the
printer, then press On
button to turn on. See
your documentation.

2) You push the ON button again and the printer turns off.

3) You push the ON button again and 1) above repeats. No other control has any effect.

The manual speaks of a "fatal error". Any ideas?

We have one of these at work, and it has been all right so far. A bit heavy on the ink cartridges but that's what you get with inkjets. Fatal errors tend to be the ONES that you can't fix yourself, and which have to be taken up with an Epson service agent. Are you quite sure 1. You got all of the paper out, and 2. You didn't damage or misalign any rollers or little flaps or guides? Also have you tried disconnecting it compeletely from the power (pull the plug out) and leaving it for about half an hour?

In addition to the good suggestions given above by ST i SUGGEST the following (it has been the CASE for me with 2 Epson PRINTERS). You say the following "for about a year". If it is still within the warranty (usually one year) contact Epson right away to ensure your warranty rights are protected. Also if you purchased the printer with a credit card and still have the receipt often the warranty period is doubled under the provisions of the card (regardless of the expiry of the Epson warranty). IE: if the warranty is one year it becomes 2 years but from the underwriter of the insurance provider of the credit card not Epson. But the credit card company will pay Epson not you. Good luck, truenorth

Solve : Battery issue?

Answer»

I have a Toshiba laptop which is a little over 3 years old. Functionally works well but the issue I'm having is with the battery. It charges up but only LASTS for about 45 minutes from the time it is fully charged until it gets to very LOW power. I looked at the "Toshiba Power saver PROPERTIES" and do not see anything that I can change to help improve performance. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to improve the battery life. Thank you.Has it always been that quick to drain?

Have you tried charging it at different outlets? Or tried a different charging cable?

The power saver properties are more for long term saving, LIKE when to go on standby ETC. If you are in a well lit room, take the brightness down, that will give you abit longer.

Only run 1 or 2 things at once, that will put less pressure on the CPU and memory, and will save battery life.

Alternatively, buy a new battery. You could probably find one by talking to Toshiba, or even looking on ebay.

There isn't much you can do to get more than that 45 minutes, seems to be a duff battery. If the battery is over 3 years old and will still run the computer for 45 minutes, that's not bad. Face it, your battery is approaching end of life, which is normal for its age.

I suggest shopping on Amazon.com as a source for a battery. I believe you can find them much lower in price than what you'll get from Toshiba. At least, that's been the case with other computer brands, so I'd bet it's true to Toshiba batteries also.

That is about 223 USD or 210 AUD and you would want to buy locally if you could. If you can locate the monitor, power supply and case in your AREA, you will save on shipping cost.
There are many good motherboards with CPU for under $140, but it is hard to know if they are available in your part of the world. You may want to check out eBay for your region and see if you can buy the motherboard, CPU and RAM and have it shipped to you. Depending on what IMPORT regulations are.

http://www.ebay.in/

I just saw a USED AMD MOTHERBOARD WITH ATHLON CPU WITH 1GB RAM. for Rs. 2,150
He says he will ship if free.
http://cgi.ebay.in/USED-AMD-MOTHERBOARD-ATHLON-CPU-1GB-RAM-/180676190999?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_203&hash=item2a1123e317

It will expire in abut 28 hours.

Please understand, I have no idea of how reliable eBay is in India. This is only a suggestion. The AMD CPU is a good choice for performance and economy.

Solve : Wireless unidentified?

Answer» SUP peeps, I seem to be having a problem with an unidentified wireless network (limited connectivity)when I'm not even trying to connect to a wireless one. I have no problems hooking up wireless, and when I do there are no probs. Right now I'm hooked up through my ethernet, but when I go to the network center it tells me MULTIPLE networks are hooked up and the wireless one has a yellow exclamation and I didnt even attempt to connect to itIt seems like your wireless may be set to automatically connect to a network. If you are using ethernet for now just disable the wireless adapter until you WANT to use it.Bump..........

nothing is set to automatic I even erased all connections and started fresh and its still doing it. When I look at my network details I do SEE IPV6 is limited. Its weird cause if I do manually connect to any wireless and disconnect it dissappears though till I hibernate, restart, or reboot I forgot to add. I had vmware with legit copy of XP on it and it kept trying to hook up because i never disconnected my usb realtek wireless driver from vmware. It was still running in the background and feeding off of the host OS.

a few days ago my mouse , keyboard , an monitor wasn't getting any power from my TOWER . at first i thought it was my power supply an i replace it but nothing happen.. so it wasn't that and i returned it . tha cpu an my other fan was spinning as USUALLY . i can hear tha hard drive working , my cd / dvd drive open an CLOSE .

my keyboard an mouse lite up as usual when i first turn the computer on an nothing else and my monitor it just goes to power saving mode . weird things is that my mouse would work when the keyboard isn't plug in , but not tha opposite WAY around .

i some how got my monitor to work but not the mouse or keyboard , but it would just freeze on the " hp invent screen " . on the screen it show the push " esc" to reboot , F1- (i forgot sorry T.T) F10 to system . i have a few more day of SCHOOL left before i can go check on it at my parent's house.. so i can't really do anything till i go down on saturday .

my system specs is -

HP Pavilion a450n
Pentium 4 / 3.0 GHz:
HyperThreading Technology
800 MHz front side bus
mPGA478
Windows XP SP3
Chipset
848P
1Gig of ram
160 GB Ultra DMA 7200 rpm Hard Drive
GeForceFX 5200 AGP2 8X card: graphic card
ASUS P4SD-LA PES revision 0.01 - motherboard

if i miss anything here ,here the website to my motherboard an computer specs . thank you for taking your time to look at this

(motherboard ) http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00063272&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=392522#c00063272_doc

(Computer specs ) http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00058235&tmp_track_link=ot_faqs/top_issues/en_us/c00058235/loc:2&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=392522Your post is kind of confusing. So the computer just won't boot at all, right? Sounds like you have more of a problem than your keyboard and mouse. What kind of mouse and keyboard are these? PS/2 or USB? The specs indicate that that computer comes with a PS/2 keyboard and mouse, but just need to verify this is what you're still using.

Again, like I said, if it isn't booting past the HP Invent screen or giving you some kind of error message, the keyboard and mouse are most likely not the issue.

How to set password on partition without using software?

You can't. You can ENCRYPT a partition, but you can't password it without the help of some other software. It just doesn't work that WAY. You may also password specific FILES or folders.

Perhaps if you could explain what you're trying to do exactly we could give you some advice on how best to achieve it.

For encryption, you could try http://www.truecrypt.org/. It's free.

Solve : Photo printing?

Answer»

I have a Canon MP530 printer. I can't print a 8 X 10 photo. Each time I try, the photo comes out at 7 5/8 X 10 1/8 or less. I select borderless but I still get the SMALL size photo on my 8.5 X 11 PAPER. How can I print it larger? Thanks, MicromosObviously, your picture has not a 8X10 ratio.
Check the dimensions of your pictures and do the ratio height / widht.
If it is not the same as 8/10 (wich is 0,8, btw ), then you will have to crop it.
But remember : you need to crop it at exactly the 0,8 ratio otherwise you will FACE the same pb.

Another solution would be to check in the printer settings to print it 'full page' instead of 'full image'.
This way, the printer will crop himself your picture.
A good way to do this is to go TROUGH a good image editor like photoshop.

Solve : computer cant boot up because the CDRW light is on as if it is being read?

Answer»

Have tried disconnecting the Cd player but still won't boot, if the light on the CD GOES off then it boots up. I have tried disconnecting the CD but to no avail. I have wiped the hard drive and reinstalled XP. Nothing works whilst the light is fixed on even the CD player. I find your post somewhat confusing. If i understand correctly you had a PROBLEM in that your COMPUTER would not "boot" because a light on the CD burner was constantly on. If that is the case how were you able to install the o/s ? How were you able to "wipe" the HDD? When you say you "disconnected" the CD unit--what ACTUALLY did you do? When this CD burner light stayed on for the 1st time what were you doing at the time on the computer? Why did you feel it was necessary to take the drastic step of wiping the HDD and reinstalling the O/S? truenorthIf you disconnect the CD drive and it still didn't boot, then the problem isn't the CD drive.

At what point does the booting process STOP? Does the system get past the POST? Does Windows begin to load? Are there any error messages? You need to be more specific. Remember, we can't see what it's doing so you have to provide as much detail as possible, even if those details seem irrelevant.

Best guess right now, could be the hard drive or the memory or even a number of other things. Can't say without more info.

Solve : How about Raid 5?

Answer»

My company plans to add Raid 5 to each PC (64bit Windows 7).
I've never tried Raid 5.
How does it work?
Thank uQuote

Raid 5 to each PC

That seems a little extreme for each desktop. Usually RAID 5 is used in servers, and RAID 1 or 0 in desktops. RAID 5 is also slower than RAID 1 and 0 ESPECIALLY for WRITE. I would go with RAID 1 or 0. You will also save money because you won't need three drives in every desktop.

THANKS IN ADVANCEA good production audio card will most likely not have a built-in pre-amp. I use an m-audio audiophile 192 and a audiobuddy pre-amp. I believe the m-audio delta 1010 has a built in pre-amp but won't go to 192, just 96 which is better than the 44.1 used for cd's. Good luck to ya. Stay away from e-mu.I realize not many PEOPLE approve of Creative's work, especially those in professional audio editing and creation.

I myself have a Creative PCI-e X-Fi Titanium running under WINDOWS 7, and I have found it to be the best sound card I have used for clarity, features and flexibility. I originally bought the card specifically for the Game mode under Windows 7 using ALCHEMY, but have also taken to the music creation mode, in which it actually has a built in hardware mixer, able to add reverb, chorus and other effects on the fly, as well as a full hardware synth.

Creative also supply their own AISO driver that actually works quite well under Adobe Soundbooth and Fruity Loops Studio 9

Solve : Which graphics card??

Answer»

I found two graphics cards on newegg and I can't figure out which is better. It's probably the more expensive one , but I want to be sure.

One has 512MB GDDR5 and the other has 1GB DDR5.

And yes, I am aware that there are better cards, but I need it to be low power. So just tell me which one of these is better.

Thanks.Virtually identical except for amount of memory. Max resolution is the same for both? I suspect Newegg specs are incorrect. Look at manufacturer's data sheets to compare. Linux711, what do you want for your card? Some gaming wanted or not?

The main difference: one card has 1GB memory on it, but 850Mhz effective clock speed. The other has only 512 memory but 3588 Mhz effective clock speed. The price difference about $4~5 if I am not mistaken.

what's more important? GPU effective clock speed or amount of memory coming with the card? (all other specs equal, that is)

More ram on GPU allows for a smoother graphics on higher resolutions. But then again, more memory? But with the card having the higher memory amount, couldn't you just OC the card if you wanted to?

If anybody got any insight on this, that'll determine which of the two cards you probably want to be buying.

The fact remains they USE the exact same GPU; "SuperClocking" one isn't going to give the (hopefully a TYPO) gargantuan boost of 850Mhz to 3588Mhz. The SuperClocked version is more likely to be somewhere around 1Ghz, despite what the specification sheet says (also note that the first one notes 850Mhz, 3.4gbps effective, whereas the other says "3588Mhz Effective" they probably cannot be compared directly.

Depends entirely on what it will be used for. And also, if for games, entirely on what games are played.

Quote

More RAM on a GPU doesn't allow for smoother graphics in higher resolutions. the memory used by the 2-dimensional screen pixels, even when doublebuffered, won't exceed about 16MB of space, even for a huge 1600x1200 screen. Video Card memory is used almost exclusively for storing textures. Textures whose quality settings in-game directly affect the texture resolutions; this means that more VRAM translates directly to either More Texture or higher- Resolution textures; USING a texture quality above what your card's memory can handle means that many textures will be stored in system RAM, which means that the card will have to wait for a free DMA access to get to the data; needless to say reaching ACROSS the Bus, even if it is a high-speed PCI-E bus, is still a lot slower then simply reading from the high-speed VRAM. Clock-speed of the GPU will not make reading data from the System any faster. In fact, it means that even more of the otherwise faster cycles will be wasted, since it also has less texture memory. And this is only for textures; there are of course varying qualities to the other components, such as shaders, vertexes, polygons, and so forth; the code for a shader still has to be stored and accessed from video memory, just as the vertex data has to be stored in VRAM to be accessed by the rendering pipeline. a higher speed GPU doesn't mean that the memory will be accessed faster. The latency is still the same. The GPU processes the Vertex, texture, and lighting data and performs the hardware Transform, Lighting, and texture mapping, and nowadays it also calculates the normals of each triangle. faster GPU speed translates directly into the ability to display more polygons; but remember that the vertexes, textures, and so forth that the GPU is now working with faster still need to be stored in the Video Memory- having a faster GPU in no way "compensates" for less Video memory, just as having lots of Video memory cannot compensate for a slow GPU.
I think I am going to get the 1GB version of the card because the superclocked one isn't much faster according to these pages:

http://www.evga.com/products/moreInfo.asp?pn=512-P3-1242-LR&family=GeForce%20200%20Series%20Family
http://www.evga.com/products/moreinfo.asp?pn=01G-P3-1246-LR&family=21

Quote
one isn't going to give the (hopefully a typo) gargantuan boost of 850Mhz to 3588Mhz
When I saw this on newegg, I thought it wasn't right. If you look at the pages above, it says 3588Mhz for the superclocked one and 3400Mhz for the normal one so it must have been a typo.

Solve : Installation of additional hd to an HP computer?

Hi I am wanting to install an additional hd into a HP computer Pavillion 503. The other HD comes from same type and model of computer. I am wanting to combine the two TOGETHER, one has the video plug for monitor broken in it. What I would like to KNOW is if there will be any issues with taking the other HD from the one and installing in this one. Done harvested the memory STICK from the other just wanted to make sure that there is not something I need to watch for installing the other hard DRIVE as well. Both have been running xp. Any advice would be welcomed. The new hd will not boot to the OS, but other than that there is nothing special about adding a hard drive.Quote

You are gonna use the HD for back-up(files) or dual boot? What do you mean video broken?
IF your mobo/comp. is or have another channel or capable of having 2 HDs, then shoot.

Solve : Hard drive too low on space??

Answer»

So, I think my computer is missing space. I have a hdd of 106 GB. I currently have: 9.27 GB.

Im not quite sure how it got this low, yes I have a few games but nothing much.

Between my desktop, my documents, and various other smaller locations, I dont have enough stuff there to take up so much space.

I've run a disk defrag and I've tried running a disk cleanup. However my computer always restarts during the cleanup.

I need some of my space back but I cant find it.

Any suggestions?
Edit: I was reccommended to try CCleaner.

Going from about 9 Gigs to 50 is great improvement.Remove old restore points.
Delete internet cash.
Remove page file, REBOOT and restore it.
Check your downloads FOLDER and temp folders as they can hold tons.
Run a checkdisk to see if your file system or directory is screwed up.

Solve : is Socket AM2+ compatible with Socket 939?

My motherboard recently WENT out and i need to purchase a new one. I have a socket 939 amd athlon processor on my motherboard currently, i would like to buy a new motherboard and it says it supports the amd athlon, however it has a Socket AM2+.

I have read online that the AM2 is not compatible with the S939, but i have not read anywhere if the AM2+ is compatible or not. Would a motherboard with a AM2+ socket support a processor that was previously in a 939 socket? No.

Sad to say it, both AMD and Intel have closed the door on the concept of incremental progressive upgrade. They don't believe in evolution, they create new incompatible things that deny their ancestry.

Socket AM2 supports DDR2 memory only. Socket 939 is DDR1 only. Socket 939 and AM2/AM2+ cpus will not work in each other's sockets. They won't even fit unless you use a hammer. Socket AM2 is almost identical to socket 939 but uses a protective mechanism (a manufacturing “key”) designed to prevent any socket 939-pin CPUs from being inserted into a socket AM2 motherboard, and to prevent socket AM2 CPUs from being inserted into a socket 939-pin motherboard.

Solve : My Wireless Belkin Router Isn't Working! Please Help!?

Answer»

My Dell computer uses a Belkin G (one of the older models) router to offer a secure connection to two laptops, two desktop computers, and a handful of handheld electronics. We haven't had many issues with it, but when we got back from a four day vacation, both the lights for 'wireless' and 'secure' have been turned off and the wireless internet isn't working. I've tried holding the reset button, then unplugging it from everything and waiting ten seconds after the lights went out and PLUGGING it back in. Nothing's been working. The 'wired', 'router', 'modem', and 'internet' lights are all still green. On our Motorola Modem everything is still lit. I really need help, we need wireless on all of our computers. I'm not very computer literate, so please bear with me and use layman's terms.

Additional Details:

  • We were gone for three days, and only the two laptops were used, but not on our wifi, the hotel's.
  • Both desktops were turned off for the three days.
  • There was a storm one NIGHT (not sure if that has any significance).
  • We use Long Lines.
  • My Router's model is - F5D9231-4 v2

Belkin's are not top quality, and a newer model would probably be more secure than the old unit that might have vulnerabilities. I had a similar ISSUE with a linksys access point after a nasty storm. For some reason that storm spiked the power to the home and the access point was the WEAKEST link. Ended up upgrading that 2004 model access point to a newer Netgear with better security options for about $60Quote

Why did you say that?
Long lines is a dead giveaway.

This INCLUDES operating SYSTEM (what version of Windows you are using), service packs, computer make/model, RAM, hard drive, sound and video cards, current adware/spyware/virus programs being used on a REGULAR basis, do you have a "real" Windows CD, etc. Do these speakers take power from USB or a power adapter plugged into an OUTLET? I have seen similar problems to yours if you plug in OLD speakers that older systems use to power thru sound card into a newer style sound port that requires a pre-amp to amplify the sound and drive speakers.

Its also possible that the sound card or onboard audio chip is bad if correct drivers.

Solve : Speakers keep dying.?

Answer»

I let Media Player run all NIGHT while I sleep to music using onboard sound port. In the morning my subwoofer was dead; will not power on. Replaced speakers and the same thing happened the next day. Replaced speakers, INSTALLED new sound card, plugged subwoofer into my UPS rather then the wall outlet. Three weeks later I woke up to another dead subwoofer.

Dell Inspiron 530
Intel Core2duo
2 gb ram
windows vista

Thanks for any help. The first thing I would suggest is to not play your speakers over night. To me it sounds like its just to much for them to handle.

It's not the speakers...Buy a surge protector, check your cables and connectors for both the audio equipment and your computer.

Yeah, I'd connect the speakers to a surge protector, not a UPS. There's no need to have speakers connected to a UPS, although I don't know that it causes a problem for the speakers. So, look at it as a troubleshooting step. Interesting to know if these are cheap subwoofers that keep dying... I have heard quite a few stories of Wal-Mart type noname subwoofers dying after a few weeks or months, especially if they are required to take a pounding.
Whatever brand the speakers are, I would not buy them again.
Gotta be junky quality.
My $150 Altec Lansing's have been rolling along since 1999.
This is my first entry, so welcome to me! Eh, you don't need $150 speakers to get a long-lasting set of speakers. Most speakers costing a fifth as much will LAST for years. He seems to have other hardware or power issues. The speakers were, in order, Sony ($98), Colby ($49), and Phillips ($75). The UPS has a voltage regulator built in and the 2nd and 3rd subwoofers were plugged into a surge protector which was plugged into the UPS. I think this problem is beyond advise on a forum but it is so #&$*#(@ frustrating and expensive. When the speakers were working, were there any audible pops/crackles?No pops or crackles, in FACT they work beautifully right up to the time they die. This happened the first time when the subwoofer was plugged directly into the wall outlet. So it cannot be the surge protector or UPS.

Solve : Good Evening EVeryone!! PC not Booting Up!!?

Answer»

People I NEED a lot of help from u all...i have a assembled DESKTOP PC...it is around 4 years old...now the problem I'm experiencing is that it doesn't boot up at all...the CPU has 2 LED lights..one green and another red...when i press the power on button only the fan starts off but nothing happens in the computer....only the fan keeps rotating and the green light is on...the red processing light doesn't light up at all!! pls help me!! Can you tell me anything about your rig? Like the CPU, PSU, Graphic and mainboard.

Also what exactly is the issue? Which fan is spinning? The CPU cooler?

The CPU has 2 light or the mainboard does?

When you say you assambled it do you mean you plugged in the monitor, mouse and keyboard or do you mean you assembled it from scracth Ie PSU, mainboard, RAM, HDD's etc.

If it is the prior, CHECK all your connections. I mean really check them, Unplug everything and then firmly push them all in.

Check you have power to everything and turn on.

Hope this helps,

assembled as in all the components that is monitor,CPU are of different manufacturers....it is a intel dual core processor..motherboard is ZEBRONIC 945GC ! the front face of the CPU unit has two lights next to the power nd restart button!! so wen i switch on the computer...the rear fan i.e. the cooler starts rotating and the green LED glows but nothing happens to the computer i.e. it doesnt' boot up... only the fan keeps rotating ! thats almost all i know about my PC! also the PC i'm experiencing problems in has windows XP service pack 3 installed on it... maybe that could give a hint about the core problem! I think you may be confusing the CPU with something else.

When you are referring to the CPU do you mean the big box with the DVD drive and where all the cables go into. I apologise in advance if I sound patronising. for future reference this is known as the case or PC. The CPU is in there but the box is NOT the CPU.

If so have you tried what I have said ie checking all connections?

Let me know,

I doubt the OS would have any effect on it from startup. Do you get anything on startup on the monitor?

When was the last time you KNOW the PC worked?

Have you ever opened the case?

Does the monitor work on another computer?

Does the KB and Mouse work on another computer?

thanks,

ya actually its the outer case i.e.PC i'm talking abt not the CPU!! i've reconnected everything again and again a trillion times! but nothing happens...it doesnt boot up!!

it workd last time 2months ago. no nothing comes up...the monitor(sony) when switchd on only says no input availiable.go to power save..

yup no problem with monitor!! KB and mouse also hav no issues!! Hook up only the bare minimum and test:

CPU/fan assembly
PSU
Keyboard and mouse
Monitor
1 stick of RAM...

Post back with results.thts all i hav as a PC!! even then it doesnt boot up!! any other solution?MY GOD!

There are 2 of us.

I am actually having the same problem with mine.

Basically it comes down to 4 possible issues, 1 the motherboard, 2 the CPU, 3 the ram and 4 the graphics card.

Most likely it would be the 1 or 4.

Actually it could be the power supply.

Before moving on try this. Unplug the power cord only from the computer do not flick any switched they shoul all be on. then hold the power on button for 30-60 seconds. saying for each 1 "the square root of -1 is i" or and suitably long phrase.

then reconenct the power and turn on. If you are lucky it may work...

I am guesing you are not really experienced in computers in there actual construction so you have acouple of options now.
1) Go out and buy a new PC, files can easily be recoverered and I am sure many people on this site will help you. Just have in your title, "recovering files from a dead PC"
2) Build a new computer. Very easy to do and you LEARN so so much by doing so. Again loads of people here should be able to help you.

It isn't worth you getting someone to look at it at £XK.CD an hour plus the £50 + for components.

If you have a tech savvy friend they may be helpful in diagnosing which 1 of the 4 it is and you may get away replacing just 1 component at the cost of £50 and a bottle of stout.

Sorry it has gone this way.
