Solve : Updating the BIOS on a Pentium 4 Machine? |
Answer» Greetings! Years ago I use to use Freedos (linux that acts like dos and is compatibles as dos for most applications )FreeDOS is not Linux. It's sort of like the relationship between Linux and Unix, actually; FreeDOS was created to function and appear like DOS, in the same way Linux was DESIGNED to function and appear like Unix. Quote from: DaveLembke on February 14, 2016, 08:38:54 PM Years ago I use to use Freedos (linux that acts like dos and is compatibles as dos for most applications ) as a dos alternative for stuff like this. Best alternative would be if you were able to make a bootable floppy first and then add the flash utility and rom file to the floppy if space allows and then boot off floppy and then run utility against the rom file to push it. Some flash utilities have a backup method that will write the current rom file to floppy as a means to resort back if you ever needed to space on floppy permitting. Thats exactly what i did. I made the floppy bootable and there was a program Asus offers called AFUdos. I Backed up the BIOS on the Floppy and then Installed the New BIOS from the floppy since i couldnt find a way to boot this old timer from USB. The System installed the update just fine, and booted into windows XP no problem. Another Success in the books, haha. The COMPUTER runs nice with a different PSU so its far more quiet aswell. Just for kicks i popped in a 40GB drive and installed Windows 2000 Sp4. It runs, but firefox seems to crash it haha. Oh well. Again, thanks for the help. Good to hear that the flash was a success. Also thanks BC for correcting me. Back when I was in college years ago the professor stated it was created from a linux kernel and I never thought otherwise that it was its own creation and not a linux source branch. |

Solve : Can You Spot Whats wrong with this board?? |
Answer» Looking online at a motherboard and something caught my eye. Can anyone spot the issue with this brand new motherboard shown? A polymer capacitor, or more accurately a polymer electrolytic capacitor, is an electrolytic capacitor (e-cap) with a solid electrolyte of a conductive polymer. It is based on the use of an anode metal and the combination of a polymer electrolyte TOGETHER with a liquid electrolyte. |

Solve : BSOD... Win 7 32 bit? |
Answer» Im running my pc on windows 7 professional 32-bit.. Im dealing with BSOD for the past 2 months and with computer technicians trying everything, it seems like i wont get rid of this.. The problem started 2 months ago, i tried re-installing windows 7 and even installed windows 8 but it did no help.. now im on windows 7 prof.. I ran sfc/scannow and various virus SCANS.. most of the times it gets restarted in the middle of the scanning process.. The pc technician replaced everything now, RAM, SMPS and it still didn't do any help, let alone restarting continuously, and now hes telling me that the problem must be from the motherboard and so hes recommending me to replace it with a new one.. my motherboard model is ASUS P5KPL/AM-PS.. |

Answer» I have ddr2-3200, CL 5, unbuffered, udimm, non-ecc. What does it all mean. I'm a beginner. Some say CL 2, 533 Mhz, 666 Mhz, 667 mhz etc. Can I interchange any of these? Can I use CL 2 instead of CL 5 for example, or P.C. 5300 instead of P.C. 3200? I'm still using Windows X.P. Solve : Cybertron Desktops? |
Answer» Just saw a bunch advertised on the HH Gregg website. Looks like a 100% USA company with a good rep. I never heard of them but why would I since I have not bought a new desktop in over 9 years. Can anyone tell me how CYBERTRON compares to the old standards, eg Dell and HP? THANKS.I'd rather buy a HP or Dell in that order before a cybertron. Cybertron computers have been bargain price and they try to make it look like a really good deal such as putting in a i7 processor etc, but then they use value RAM and ECS or other cheap motherboard brand which I wouldnt trust. I'd rather buy an i5 HP or Dell vs an i7 cybertron and know that I'm getting quality parts vs a mix n match bargain with questionable quality. Their market is the people who only look at specs vs quality and so if you looking for the fastest for your money you might find faster in cybertron but then 1 or 2 years from now its dead with blown motherboard and the i5 HP or Dell are passing it and continue to work another 5 to 10 years. Thanks Dave. I am asking for my SIL who has a very old, slow HP. I will get the specs so you will know what we have. She does very light weight stuff - some surfing and simple spreadsheets. Anything she gets will be light years better than her current state. I guess we will be looking at an entry level HP but maybe step-up if you can get a lot for a few extra bucks. Will post again tomorrow and hope you and others will GIVE me a recommendation. Thanks again! Plenty of good quality inexpensive systems out there for a non-gamer. Biggest thing will be learning their way around the new OS and if they have a printer or scanner or other device that connects to the computer if there are drivers for it to work with newer OS. I have seen many people needing to replace their printer or scanner or even older digital camera that has internal storage because the devices are not supported for Windows 7 or newer for example for devices made for windows XP/Vista and prior. Quote a 100% USA companyI don't think Cybertron computers, or the company for that matter, are any more "American" than HP or Dell. They are just a custom PC integrator. a 100% USA company I kind of laughed at that too since all the parts are likely manufactured outside of the USA with majority in China. Hopefully they are at least assembled in the USA and not just a sales office in the USA with a few employees for marketing and promotion of product. |

Solve : Anyone familiar with Pentium N3700 1.6Ghz (2.4Ghz Turbo ) Quadcore? |
Answer» My wife saw a computer at BJ's for sale tonight for $229.99 its a HP 251-a121 as seen here: http://www.bjs.com/hp-251-a121-desktop-16ghz-pentium-n3700-processor.product.286066 Looking around online it appears to be one of those hilarious machines that are essentially a laptop in a desktop case - They use a MiniITX motherboard with soldered CPU that has no PCI(-E) slots at all and even uses an external power brick. Now that you pointed that out I looked and found this which is quite funny... Why did they make a minitower case with external power supply when with all the empty space they could have made it internal... http://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c04870230 We wont be buying this one... ha ha Some other online references to people adding PCIE video cards with the N3700 must have been a custom low TDP gaming build like using one of these boards linked here with PCIE 8x slot or something. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182987&cm_re=N3700-_-13-182-987-_-Product Thanks for your help |

Solve : My computer stopped detecting my graphics card.? |
Answer» I woke my computer up a couple days ago, and nothing was being DISPLAYED on my screen. So I hard-restarted the computer, only for it to be he same. I then unplugged my HDMI cable from my graphics card port, and [plugged it into the motherboard's HDMI port, and the screen came on. The computer had booted to the desktop graphics card and was no longer detecting my AMD graphics card. I shut down my computer, removed my graphics card blew everything out and cleaned it all really good, then plugged it back in and rebooted the computer, but nothing had changed. No matter how many times I scan for changes in hardware in the device manager, it never detects my AMD XFX R7700 graphics card, and I've looked under every SECTION, not just the display drivers section. I am aware that sometimes it can show up with a different name, but I have not seen any devices that it could be. I did a clean install of windows, and it's still the same. I uninstalled all my AMD drivers and tried to reinstall them, but they wont install because it wont detect any AMD hardware. What can I do to make my computer detect my graphics card? |

Solve : Installing a video card? |
Answer» Ok i wanted to know how to disable your old video card so that my NEW video card can be used. (I think my old vid card is built into my motherboard)or do i even have to disable my old card? Can i just put the new one in and will it work?Disable the old card by pulling it out of the machine. Put the new one in and install the drivers Quote Disable the old card by pulling it out of the machine. Put the new one in and install the drivers READ here... Quote Ok i wanted to know how to disable your old video card so that my new video card can be used. (I think my old vid card is built into my motherboard) It will work. Depending on your motherboard, there might be an option for you to disable it in your bios. Also you can disable it in your DEVICE manager. 8-)fffreakI am kinda of new to computers and i believe the graphic card is built into the motherboard. If you hit the delete button right at startup, you'll enter the BIOS menu. In one of the choices, you will find "onboard video" with choices to enable or disable. select disable, save and exit, then reboot, MAKING sure your monitor is hooked up to the new card. |

Solve : USB power management after shutdown? |
Answer» So a few weeks ago, i finally upgraded my gaming PC to windows 10 and now once i shut my PC down, it continues to feed power to my USB ASus wireless station. How can i disable that feature? The light stays on and the USB keeps powering both my back light keyboard and my Wifi Hub. My specs are as follows I just tape over any LEDs on my stuff, there are so many that it pretty much lights up the ROOMQuote from: Slacker on February 05, 2016, 12:00:57 AM What happens if you go into the BIOS → Advanced → Disable Asmedia USB 3.0 Charging Support? Funny thing is, thats off. Should i use the USB 3.0 port for this device? Tried that too and still no go. Perhaps i should update my BIOS? Quote from: comda on February 14, 2016, 05:22:27 PM Tried that too and still no go. Perhaps i should update my BIOS?No. Just leave it alone. Do you really, really need to turn off all power? Do you worry about the Electric bill? Do you fear somebody might remote yhour PC at 3 am? If so, get a clock timer for your power strip. Set it for the times your normally use the PC, plus or minus a half hour. This is a safe way to control total power use to your workstation. (Burt the clock timer itself consumes 5 watts.) Why are you against me UPDATING my BIOS? The Asus page states it has updates and fixes. And none of those. the Light just BOTHERS me Guess im sorta OCD? i dunno. I know for a fact it didnt do this before because lights bother me at night. i used to have my Power Bar hidden behind my desk so i couldnt see the light. I got a new desk and also updated to windows 10. At first i didnt notice the light because i setup my desk one way but then i did once i set it up another way. ive been turning off the power bar at night but it still annoys me to have it running when the computer is not in useIf you update the BIOS it may be much more than annoying. Some older boards have not easy way to undo a bad BIOS update. You can put some CHEWING GUN over the LED. Quick, easy, free and reversible. |

Solve : Faster typing on keyboard or double type.? |
Answer» Hello, I'm wondering if there is a possibility to boost up your frequency of REPETITION with keyboard. I mean holding for example key "a" will make series "aaaaaaa...." faster with SMALLER delay. If it's not possible I was also thinking about double key command (or something) - pressing "a" will make series "aaaaaaa..." twice faster. I add also a pic of keyboard setting that allows me to boost it a little bit. Sorry for bad english im really trying to improve my language skill, HOPE for help! |

Solve : Newly installed drive is'nt recognized? |
Answer» I've installed a second dvd drive and cannot get the puter to recognize it. It's an IDE drive so I had to get a SATA to IDE converter. Everything is connected correctly according to the DIRECTIONS. I made sure all SATA ports are turned on in the bios. Yet, I'm having no luck. Anyone know what I may still need to do??? I wish it had an IDE port, I guess everythings going to SATAi never come with this PROBLEM before, but SATA don't have master and slave, so may be the jumper setting. let me know if found any solution for this I'm not sure what you mean by jumper setting. Does that have to do with the little clip ya have to either have in or out of the drive? Right now there is'nt one in it. Allthough the converter info says Master/slave device emulation support. So... I assume it's not an issue. Any thoughts?have you try put it as master , slave or cs? if no jumper don't work, may be with jumpur it work.. Quote have you try put it as master , slave or cs? if no jumper don't work, may be with jumpur it work.. Whoa!! :-? I sure appreciate your help but, I can't follow that.Does this machine have a CDRom drive in it ? ? If so you have IDE connections. Re-check your owner's manual for that board. It has a dvd rom drive. And no, there are no IDE's on the motherboard. Has'nt anyone here come across this type of situation?? Please help someone!!! I don't want to have to pay a tech guy if I'm just OVERLOOKING something fairly simple to solve this problem. What is the computer or motherboard make and model?Dell E521.Been to the web site. do not list a E521Dimension E521. brand new. man, I can't believe how much of a pain this has become. The mother board only has sata connections.(4 of them) 2 for optical 2 for hard drives. I have an older nec dvd-rw drive with IDE connections. bought an IDE to SATA converter, made sure all SATA connections were on in the BIOS. Has anyone else had to/tryed to do this?? Seems like it would be something that some of you out there may have encountered. Am I totally missing something? If they make a converter for this purpose, I assume theres a resonable explaination for why my computer is'nt recognizing it. I would contact Dell if it's brand new especially. |

Solve : mouse noise? |
Answer» I have installed a wireless optical mouse and keyboard. I now have bleed-over white noise in my SPEAKERS. When I move the mouse, the noise fluxuates. I have moved things around on my desk, but no luck. This is a MicroInnovations and the only brand I have this problem.Sometimes too much RF interference with too many of these gadgets cause problems. Can you move your speakers further away? Does that help?I have unplugged the speakers and put in the headphones. Problem is still there. The cordless phone base is on the desk also, but it was never a problem before. I moved it ANYWAY, but still no help. I suspect that it is nearer the source, the connection at the USB PORT. Or some kind of conflict, but I cannot find it. I have turned the volume down and it does not effect the regular sounds. Just an irritating noise in the background. It does stop when the computer is working, changing, pulling up windows, etc... but starts again when the item is loaded. Can you CHANGE channels ? ?There is always the possibility that it could be EMI instead of RFI. Do you have a surge SUPPRESSOR with EMI/RFI filtering or an UPS? |

Solve : When you should I buy iPad Air 2?? |
Answer» It is time to say by-by to our IPAD 2. Made the mistake of installing IOS 9.2 and it runs like a dog. Should have stayed with IOS 7 but too late now. Looks like Apple will be introducing iPad Air 3 next month. Does Apple discount old models or just charge more for the new ones? IOW, should I wait another month or so to get the current model iPad Air 3? Thanks.Apple tend to just stop selling the old one and start the new one at the same price. You may be able to find the old model cheaper at some retailers who may have old STOCK but the SAVINGS usually aren't huge. I'd wait for the new one to come out and see if it is much better or if the old model is AVAILABLE cheap from somewhere. |

Solve : RAIDing hard drives? |
Answer» Greetings,
Hardware raid I think you have to have like drives in capacity and make model, but if you use windows software raid you can do this across different size drives just making sure that the partitions to mirror are same size. I seen a drive split in half mirrored to self once for a POS system and I was like... WHAT THE? Why would anyone mirror to same drive? Contacted the vendor of the POS systems and they said its for fault tolerance. I said usually its among 2 separate drives and not a hard drive mirrored to self which actually overworks it because its writing 2x as much to 2 sections of the drive. It was a lost cause trying to convince them how this made no sense. I remember GOback 4.0! one of the Older style P2 Toshiba laptops i have has it at bootup! Anyways. what im essentially looking at is running the OS on this machine on the SSD and keeping everything i need on this RAID, so if one drive fails i can rebuild it easily using another drive without loosing data. Ive just done some reading on software VS Hardware RAID and both have advantages and disadvantages. The exact drive models i have are as follows: Seagate ST1000DM 003-1CH162 and the second is a Western Digit Black WDC WD10 02FAEX-00Y9AO. Both being 1Tb drives. I have currently updated to windows 10 from 7 but am contemplating going back on that. What do you suggest? i dont want to loose my files. I have Music, personal Photos, and even Personal ISO copies of Linux, and copies of all my windows installers as for some reason DVD's go bad in my house fast. So ive not used the OEM disks in years to avoid damage. Quote from: camerongray on February 15, 2016, 10:28:32 AM You can certainly RAID different drives, it's maybe not the most "best practice" situation but it will work fine. A couple of pointers: Alright. Well the issue is budget HAHA. Maybe if i was back when i build this machine in 2012 id have the money for identical drives or other means. If i do a software RAID and these drives are not running the OS, if one fails can i replace it and have the software rebuild the other drive without data loss? Thats mainly what im after. I have 1 of these 1tb drives filled with software im running that needs to be cleaned but about half of it i need. I also have a few other external drives packed to the rim that need to be sorted and cleaned out. So i need a secure option as right now i have copies of stuff across drives and im loosing my mind LOL Quote What do you suggest? i dont want to loose my files. I have Music, personal Photos, and even Personal ISO copies of Linux, and copies of all my windows installers as for some reason DVD's go bad in my house fast. I backup plan is needed if you dont already have one. I would not TRUST all my data to just a RAID array. yes it will protect from a single drive failure, but if bad data is written back, you are essentially corrupting both copies of files. That is where shadow copy is helpful, however CONNECTING to a NAS or USB External Drive every once in a while to backup an exact copy of all your most important data is best. I run RAID, Shadow Copy, and well as I backup on occasion to 4 x 32GB USB sticks. My data that is most important is 23.6GB right now. I have the USB sticks marked A, B, C and D and PERFORM a weekly backups every weekend with a batch script that targets where I store my most important data with an exclusion list to skip certain files etc. So this week I back up to Stick A, then next week Stick B and week after that C and then week after that D and then week after that OverWrite Stick A, and then B C D and cycle repeats. I can essentially get data that is almost a month old and USB sticks are cheap. The more data you have and depending on how important it is to have multiple points to go back to will determine the cost associated with data protection this way. Its not perfect as for if something got corrupt say back on January 13th, and I run the backup today for Feb 15th, and overwrite the prior backup that had that file not corrupted and found the issue today, I am out of luck. However I also my most important files that dont take up much space at all which are my programming projects and source code etc backed up to an online cloud for free and have folders for each backup date so I can go back quite a ways if needed, although most programs are easy to reconstruct if needed not too difficultly. Quote from: DaveLembke on February 15, 2016, 11:10:29 AM I would not trust all my data to just a RAID array. yes it will protect from a single drive failure, but if bad data is written back, you are essentially corrupting both copies of files. This needs saying. Over and over. RAID is not backup! Just google that phrase. You could still backup to your second hard drive without using RAID. Here's how I do my backups of my home server (Where all my stuff is stored) - I have a cheap hot swap drive bay on the front of the machine (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Orico-5-25-Inch-Trayless-Caddy/dp/B014HWNVV6/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1455582313&sr=8-14&keywords=hot+swap+hard+drive) - I run RAID 10 internally (purely for availability) and then keep a hard drive in that bay that is unmounted most of the time (preventing accidental erasure) - I have a script that periodically mounts this disk, performs an incremental backup of all my data to it and then unmounts it again. Every week or so I take the hard drive out and swap it with another drive that I keep offsite. This means I have a backup on a separate drive and another one that is kept offsite. When it's all working correctly all I need to think about doing is pulling one drive out and putting the other in every so often. I'm not saying you need to go as crazy as this but having some sort of removable backup device isn't a bad idea - You could at the very least keep it in a different location from the PC. It's a good idea to have a backup that is usually kept totally separate from the PC, even if it's unmounted, your power supply could blow up and take out any drive that it is connected to. Quote from: camerongray on February 15, 2016, 05:30:39 PM You could still backup to your second hard drive without using RAID. So you have 2 internal drive and one that you carry elsewhere? im following what Each RAID means from here: http://searchstorage.techtarget.com/definition/RAID im just trying to keep up. Ive done a lot on computers and even done repair at a store for basic customer level stuff. Formats and reloads data backup virus removal but RAID is something new to me. So if i may ask for a dumb version haha. Interesting idea you pose. Sadly i dont have elsewhere to go. Im a university student limited to his room and school haha. I have a 1Tb usb 2 external drive and its fully too. I have to go through it and delete a BUNCH of stuff i dont need. I wouldn't start setting up any raid system with one drive holding important programs. Some raid types require that you re initialize both drives loosing the data, not a good thing. I would use Easeus todo backup free or the workstation version, backup your OS partition and program partition to the spare drive. The program is very clear in what it is doing to where . There is the option in the tools menu to make a windows boot CD to restore the backup if you need to or you can mount the backup as a drive and copy back any files you loose. |

Solve : Gaming computer build advice.? |
Answer» Hey peoples, A one shot deal should include ram from the motherboards tested list so you are sure it boots I don't understand what that means... Can you elaborate? All manuf. have what's called a QVL list for RAM...(qualified vendor list ). This means that any RAM on that list has been physically tested in their labs with that specific MBoard / PC and is known to work properly... Quote from: patio on February 18, 2016, 06:26:34 AM All manuf. have what's called a QVL list for RAM...(qualified vendor list ). Sooo... You're saying that the ram I selected is not part of this "list"? If so can you recommend on that is that's relatively the same as it or better maybe cause two of these ram sticks is only 35 dollars right now, that's why I was going to buy it.To be clear here - RAM not being on the list does not mean that it will not work, it almost certainly will - It just means that the motherboard manufacturer has never tested it. I have never checked a QVL for RAM I'm buying and tend to shuffle sticks between various machines and I've never had a stick not work as long as the specifications match (which the RAM you are looking at does). Personally I would just buy that RAM. As far as SSDs go, it really depends on the price you are looking for - The Crucial MX200 and Samsung 850 Evo are good value but still decent drives. Quote from: camerongray on February 18, 2016, 12:45:07 PM To be clear here - RAM not being on the list does not mean that it will not work, it almost certainly will - It just means that the motherboard manufacturer has never tested it. Personally I would just buy that RAM. I really would like to buy an SSD card but I'm worried about going over budget, I'm already looking at 750-800$ for this build alone and that's not including the OS and the Keyboard/Mouse. What would you think if I didn't buy a hard drive and used the money to buy a 500GB SSD? Does a computer NEED a hard drive to work or does the SSD work the same as a hard drive? Also do you KNOW of a card relatively the same as the one I have for a bit less. If I can cut the price down on the card but not sacrifice to much gaming performance than that'll help drop the dollar amount down a bit. I just checked my build adding the 500GB SSD and removing the hard drive and I'm sitting at 891$, the card alone is 334$ so if I can cut that down a little bit with a deal that you may know about that would be ideal cause again, I still have to buy the OS, I can get a cheap mouse and keyboard from Wal-Mart if I have to.It really depends what you are planning on doing and the various prices, you could for example get a 250GB SSD and then use your hard drive to store large things or stuff you don't access regularly. An SSD won't for example provide a HUGE benefit for storing large video files or music, they are fine on a hard drive. You could always get the SSD now and then add a hard drive later on if you need it and can afford it. An SSD won't for example provide a huge benefit for storing large video files or music, they are fine on a hard drive. Well the only thing I use a computer for is gaming, I download a movie from time to time but other than that I don't download anything but game torrents.Well so much for going on a budget, this is the final list of what I just purchased on Amazon and it turned out to be 1,100$ roughly. CPU-Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor RAM-G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory GPU-EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB SSC ACX 2.0+ Video Card Motherboard-Gigabyte GA-H97M-D3H Micro ATX LGA1150 HDD-Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB Xigmatek Soundwave ATX Mid Tower Computer Case, Black Steel EN6725 PSU-SeaSonic S12II 520W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply Xigmatek Soundwave ATX Mid Tower Computer Case, Black Steel EN6725 Delicol Foldable Flexible Waterproof Keyboard (Black, USB 2.0, Compatible to Windows 7) Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64bit Hope I didn't screw myself over buying this. Wish me luck guys. The machine looks decent but you are going to regret that keyboard - Those roll up things are absolutely horrible to type on unless you like typing on a sponge (you may be able to remove it from your Amazon order if you are quick enough). If you're looking for a cheap, no-frills keyboard that is reasonably good to type on - The Dell KB1421 is surprisingly good: http://www.amazon.com/Dell-SK-8175-KB1421-L30U-Keyboard/dp/B0055OJQRY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1455834352&sr=8-1&keywords=Dell+KB1421 Quote To be clear here - RAM not being on the list does not mean that it will not work, it almost certainly will - It just means that the motherboard manufacturer has never tested it. Solve : hard disk smart data error? |
Answer» i have a problem with my hard disk smart data error, how can i solved the problem, although i have already scan the hard disck utilityThe DRIVE is getting ready to fail...you may have 12 hours...or 12 days ...no way of telling. cant i repair the hard disk.. is the only solution is to replace it?No. There are logs of other solutions. Like donate the hard drive to a CHARITY. Pick a charity you don't like much. Bad attemt at humor...and it'll just deflect his understanding of the issue. You think that is bad? Try to explain how the S.M.A.R.T. feature of the HDD works. That is a real bad attempt at humor. It is a disaster. Half the time it will warn of failure. And half the time there is a failure. No joke. Documented elsewhere. Two of many references: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/253094-32-false-positives http://superuser.com/questions/549547/failing-hard-drive-false-positive Now, if he wants to... here the the 'solution.' A. Divide the HDD into a number of partitions. Maybe e 8 or even 10. B. Test each partition for errors. Expect one partition have errors. C. Mark the bad partition. D. Merge the other partitions. If this works, you will have a 'doughnut' hard drive. It will have a hole in the middle, so to speak. That bad partition should never be used again. I have used this to make use of hard drive that has a media defect in a specific area of the platter. This method works only if indeed it was just a media error and not anything else. In this context, media error means a weak spot in the oxide layer on platter surface. Other kinds of error can not be 'fixed' by this trick. I have done this, but am reluctant to recommend it. Such a drive should be used for jobs that are not critical. ***sigh*** Quote Half the time it will warn of failure. And half the time there is a failure. No joke. Documented elsewhere. According to this study A drive where S.M.A.R.T monitored values exceed their threshold was 39 times more likely to fail within 60 days then an equivalent drive within the tolerance. Thanks for the Link, BC Quote Our analysis identifies several parameters from the drive’s self monitoring facility (SMART) that correlate highly with failures. Despite this high CORRELATION, we conclude that models based on SMART parameters alone are unlikely to be useful for predicting individual drive failureYou don't say what smart table parameter is causing the smart failure. Several errors when exceeded don't indicate a drive failure. Can you post a copy of a smart data from either of the 2 drives ? Speccy is one program that collects smart tables as part of the report. Other components that cause smart errors are poor power supply, overheating due to poor ventilation, failing sata controller on the motherboard, failing sata cable to name but a few. You also said that another drive in the same computer was displaying smart errors. That's why further information is required before saying that it is the drives failing. Sorry I just read you can't install windows, if you can't test the drives in another machine there is boot cd's that will test the drives and display smart table info. Parted Magic is one such program. |

Solve : 325 Intel Celeron D processor? |
Answer» I dont KNOW a alot about computers but i needed to know how much ram a 2.4 GHz 325 Intel Celeron D processor could hold? and can it support pc3200? Your help is apreciated! Is this by any chance for a homework assignment? before io tell you anything more, why do u need 2 no? We don't.Perhaps you've told us enough already. Yea that link helped as i said i dont know lots about computers and i was confused on what effects ram and such, but thanks i got it all figured out now! not sure what u mean... I was trying to not give away any homework assignments. Not trying to be rude.I see...How was the QUESTION a "homework assignment" he was asking a simple question that could have been answered with ease in your first post on this topic. So why didn't you just answer starcraft2007 question? It's already been answered. And I may have been the one that gave the IMPRESSION it was for homework. It just seemed to me that it was. It may just be me reading things into it that aren't intended , sorry for any offence caused directly or indirectly. GX1's first post was the most useful. |

Solve : What would you buy?? |
Answer» I wanted to see what item is the most popular (assuming you have the money). Please make this realistic. What would you actually buy if you were willing to spend the money. Don't just click most expensive.Oh joy.......another Poll.I want to see a $400 laptop. Quote I want to see a $400 laptop. I don't. Quote QuoteI want to see a $400 laptop. Neither do I. $400 laptops tend to be COMPAQsI'd buy none of the above. I have no use for an iPod as they tend to be restrictive and more a "fashion symbol" than something bought because it's good. I already have an MP3 player. I have no use for a PSP as I only play PC games, I don't want to play cut-down games on a small screen with tiny controls, the way Sony wants me to. All my music I play on my PC, so I don't want a CD player. Ditto DVD player. And I already have a laptop. That's my opinions anyway. As SUGGESTED above, a $400 laptop wouldn't be much use.true, a $400 laptop would be rather weak and sloooooowwwwwww, but EVEN 256MB of RAM can handle DVDs and music. 1GB flies. And 512MB is a ok but not great. The CPU and GPU don't matter except for games. I found an HP for $400 can't do much though. I'll chang to $500 which accomadates 512MB of ram. anything under $600 is about as good as a geforce 2 integrated. So what exactly is the point of this drill? I wanted to see how many people prefer branded things like the ipod and psp over unbranded ones like laptop, or mp3 player. Quote So what exactly is the point of this drill? If they are all the same price that could be relevant, but you are comparing a no name $50 MP3 player with a laptop. I don't get it.i meant something like: ipod vs mp3 psp vs laptop get what i mean?I understand. What is your choice of multimedia players? I chose Laptop. I just bought a OLD Califone Record Player so I could play all my old vinyl records. You talking about the good old days!Even CCR and Hendrix sound like they should. Ebay and $46.00 including shipping got me a fine piece of history. So, why didn't you include record players and Reel to Reel tape recorders? Old people like music too. Heck,PeckerWood is 105 years old and he dances the boogy with my new old record player. I wasn't even aware they still made record players! BTW: what's a 'reel-to-reel' (I'm not that old! ) are you referring to audio cassettes? Quote I wasn't even aware they still made record players! ReelToReel The sound of this would amaze you too Whipper Snapper. I think you made an interesting post linuxlover. [smiley=thumbsup.gif] You were also nice to make an Oh Joy!Poll ,Just for patio. |

I have it hooked to one of my MONITORS and there is no signal , and it dosent appear to light up the keyboard , the vidio CARD is an ATI x1600 pro. |

Solve : External Hard Drive/USB Problems? |
Answer» Hello, Do you have the latest updates? Latest updates for windows? I believe so, is there a way to check? Is there some sort of USB driver that can be updated? Nothing happened before this happened that I can think of. The deal with the iPod happened right after the latest update of iTunes so I thought it was related to that but now im not so sure. Now that I look at the device manager is is compleatly blank!? I just have the little computer symbol with "Device Manager on local computer" but there is nothing else. No way to expand it and no devices showing. Quote Are you using the "Safely Remove this device item" in the tray area each and every time ? ? I use it when i do remove it, which is rare. I don't do it before shutting down the computer and I wait until the computer is shut down to turn off the hard drive. Should I not be doing this? Open internet explorer, click tools and then windows update. Get any applicable updates from there, then reboot. See if that helps. If I run the SpyBot again right away the same programs come up. Can this be causing it? Is there a way to get rid of these? Solve : CD/DVD Drive Cleaners - recommended? |

Answer» I have a DVD drive in one of my PCs that is giving me, shall we say intermittent "faults". On occasions it fails to recognize the presence of disk in the tray. More than one disk in a set. No error message, Explorer just returns a blank screen where files should be when I try looking at the drive. There are no files detected. If there's genuinely no disk there, that is what it says. |
