Solve : Can't view certain topics.?

Answer»

Both of those links you posted work perfectly for me. Maybe the board is "self healing". Quote from: CBMatt on April 28, 2007, 11:49:33 AM

According to her Network Connections, the wireless connection is 54 Mbps and the local area connection is 100 Mbps.  Download speeds usually seem to range from 400 KB per second to 4 MB per second (I THINK).  Is this what you're inquiring about?

So she can't take it all in at once huh?

Did you try opening her ports a little? I tried, but she said she had a headache...

I don't think I'm going to bother.  She doesn't have any complaints about her computer and I'm going HOME TOMORROW, so I'll just leave it alone.I'm home now and I just tried those pages on my computer and I still get the problem, so I'm going to conclude that it is indeed a forum issue and leave it at that.

Solve : User Interface?

Answer» WINDOWS XP
Mozilla Firefox
ZoneAlarm

Why WOULD the "User INTERFACE" ask to access the Internet?  Would that be a virus or MALWARE?  How can I avoid that?  Thanks. The interface for what?

FlameI don't know, the firewall is asking for access to Internet ("User Interface is trying to access the Internet").Sounds PRETTY suspicious. Is there no path or actual filename given?

Solve : Trouble w/ logging in websites?

Answer»

For some reason, everytime i click a link to sign in to check mail or to ebay(ex. comcast.net for email), IE bring up a page saying "Page cannot be displayed"...I've looked over this site and got some ideas to fix it but nothing has worked. All my settings and security is back to default and all other websites work. I can't think of what coud be the problem. Any ideas? The website http://www.comcast.net does not FUNCTION well after I blocked the cookie it wished to set. It continiously keeps loading and reporting that it is done.how do i know if i blocked a cookieWhat happens when you go to
http://www.comcast.net
and sign in with username & password?I can't even access that website, Fed. You MUST use Internet Explorer.

Telling how you have blocked a cookie depends on the type of browser you use and the configuration thereof.when i click "mail" at the top, a window pops up saying"Page cannot be displayed"http://www.comcastsupport.com/sdcxuser/asp/autosolutions2.aspstill no luckReset all your browser security & advanced settings to default. What else can I doTo resolve this problem, delete the Index.dat file in Internet Explorer:

In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options. On the General tab, under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files. On the Delete Files dialog box message that is displayed, click OK .

Under History, click Clear History. On the Delete all items in your History folder? dialog box, click OK. Quit Internet Explorer.

Log on to the computer by using the account of a user who does not experience the problem, and then open a command prompt. Change the directory to the following path:

drive :\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
Type del index.dat , and then press ENTER. Exit the command prompt and then restart the computer.

The Index.dat file is re-created the next TIME that you log on to the computer.

msoft slolution>>snipped>>pd>>or download this patch>http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htmPlease be patient with me...
How would I open the command prompt to change the directory to the following path:

drive :\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
Type del index.dat , and then press ENTER. Exit the command prompt and then restart the computer.

The Index.dat file is re-created the next time that you log on to the computer.

What do you mean by "ping"?
Also, I tried the www.the eldergeek.com site you mentioned above.  I tried Method #2 and when I got to 7th point, I found the inf file.  I right clicked on it and then clicked Install.  I then got the following:

The file IEXPLORE.EXE on Windows XP Home Edition Pack 1 is needed.
Type the path where the file is located and then click ok

In the drop box was the following:
C\Windows\inf\1386.

What do I do know?  This computer stuff is hard...Method 2: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search HIDDEN Files and Folders option.
Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.
In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
Click the Search button.
In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.
Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete

Solve : partial hijacking of homepage?

Answer»

I keep getting my "blank" homepage hijacked by some SCREWY "seach assistant" cover page. It also makes it impossible to check my Yahoo account. Every time I run Spybot I get the same 2 registry key items showing up: "CoolWWWsearch.Leftovers" and "EffectiveBandToolbar" When I have Spybot deal with them the problem goes away for a little while, but returns shortly.

I also keep getting pop-ups, some of which turn into regular ads.  (Flowers, *censored* pills, ETC.)

Any suggestions?Download and run Microsoft's AntiSpyware.  It is excellent for removing the Adware that causes the Pop-ups.  It also has "Browser Restore" under advanced options which should take care of the hi-jacking.

Solve : history stopped adding new websites?

Answer»

(sorry for my poor english...)

my browser history stopped adding new websites yesterday...
IM SURE i didnt do anything that might have caused this because it started to happen during something i do very often, and i didnt remove any files or anything...
the "days to keep pages in history" option is set to 999 as it was before, and nothing else seems to have changed...

however, i tried something and i think it might help: i removed one website from the history, and then entered another one... it then added the latter, but again could no longer add new websites... (one website removed - one website added)
i also tried this with 2 and 3 websites, and it seems to have a limit to the maximum number of websites which can be stored in the browser history...

so... is there such a limit?
and if there is, can i change it?Lemon Lime........ What operating system are you using ?
Which browser are you using ?
How many URLs do you have stored in your history ?
Are you sure it doesnt say 99 days and not 999 ?

Why dont you store your sites in favourites ?

let US know

dl65  Empty cache. It may be full.im using windows 98, internet explorer 6...

yes, im sure its 999, and i have like... millions of sites in my history which i dont keep in my favorites because i like them in the history...
i mean... i dont use them all, i just want a way of going back to them if i ever NEED to...

how do i empty the cache...?

(i had no internet for about a week... then i checked the history and the problem was gone!
but then after a few hours it stopped adding sites again...)IE>Tools>Internet Options.
The history file was never meant to be a bookmark file.
I have mine set on one day, I only need to know where I'm going, not where I've been.but i love my history! im deeply attached to it...
is there another way...? Quote

but i love my history! im deeply attached to it...
is there another way...?

Get organized and bookmark everything, then empty your history. Quote

If they are your favourites/history, but you don`t want to keep them on your PC,how much of a favourite are they really but on a serious note why dont you just copy the URLs to a rewritable CD, or even a floppy disk? Are you attached to ALL of them? Even deleting what you don't want from that LIST would help...

Once disabeled, and it works, turn them on one by one to see which one causes the problem.

Did you follow the instructions that come with Incredimail?I might be able to help... The instructions don't help much lol. Who is your INTERNET Service Provider?

[glb]FLAME[/glb]lol yeh the instructions are awful. I am  using AOL dial-up at the moment on a BT phone line but in the next week am upgrading to BT Broadband.

Thanks,
LuisHere's my advice... Wait until you get broadband... I tried using Incredimail with Dial-Up using AOL, and AOl will not give you the outgoing server address becuase it is dial-up... Who are you using for broadband?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Dumm2K says Incredimail spies on your E-mail in your other THREAD.. You should have no reason to doubt this as it is an incredibly dodgy and daft program.

You are  better off without for security and privacy reasons.May I suggest using Outlook instead? I tried Incredimail once. I had it for 3 days and got rid of it. It is unstable, and needs work. Also, once someone says that there might be a security flaw, you have to take it into consideration. You have to be careful with these kinds of programs. You never know..

[glb]Flame[/glb]OK thanks people I wont bother with any of them lol just in case.lol  I know, it's a PAIN lol  They don't make it easy. Come back and see us if you have any more questions!

Solve : Outlook Express problem....?

Answer»

Hi! I have a unique problem with Outlook Express (vers. 6) that even my cable company cannot figure out. I can receive messages OK, but when I go to REPLY or SEND some messages, I get an error saying "Message Cannot Be Send.  An Error has Occured."  There is no error number.  I can send some emails but not others.  I am using Windows XP on a 1-year old HP Computer.  Any help would be appreciated!!!Is this a problem that just started happening? Or has it always been there? If it's new, reinstalling OE might be a start (be sure to back up your messages, contacts, etc. before doing this). Odd that the error message isn't giving you more info. Thanks for your reply.  This problem just began about a week ago.  My cable provider also said that it's strange that the error message is not giving any more info.  Now, the $1000 question: how can I re-install ONLY Outlook Express without installing Internet Explorer too? That I'm not sure about - I use Outlook, not Outlook Express. Hopefully someone else can post the ANSWER for you. Good luck.So why have you posted twice frank!Just trying to help, Merl. You should try doing that sometime - instead of trying to write help for people when you can't string TOGETHER a sentence. Do you ever read your own posts, governor?videoholic...... Odd , usually if you can receive ,but can't send it suggests that perhaps ......there is something wrong with you mail account setup ......
However before you go there ........do this....... If your O/S is XP ......turn off the system restore ......then reboot into SAFE mode and run a antvirus scan( make sure its a deep scan as opposed to a quick scan ) .....then run something like M/S antispyware Beta , Ad-Aware SE and SpyBot ......Remove anything found .......... NOW reboot back into NORMAL .......open Outlook Express .....click the tools button and select accounts .......... click mail tab and create a new mail account ( you will need the settings your ISP gave you to do this ) ....You can see the existing settings by clicking on the existing mail account .....by hi liting it and clicking on properties .....all the settings will be there ...........but if you have or had some SORT of pest visit you ....these settings may not be correct ..........

Once you have the new mail account created .....delete the old one .........   Now shutdown and restart your pc and see if the issue is still there ..........  If its clear .........turn back on the system restore feature .

Let us know how you make out

dl65

Thanks for all the suggestions!  I did all that, and still nothing HELPED. I even reistalled OE 6 and IE 6, which I downloaded from Microsoft, and the problem is STILL there. It's getting even stranger...sometimes when I can't send a message, I change the title of the message by one letter, and the message will send OK!! This problem is not happening in Microsoft Outlook, so it's obviously a problem with Outlook Express ONLY.  Getting stranger and stranger......I don't really have a solution but a work around.  What you can do is install Mozilla thunderbird email client. It's easy to use and best of it's free. I use and i have no problems. You can download it from.
http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/

There is also a good step by step guide here:
http://www.mozilla.org/support/thunderbird/

This will however find out if the problem is with your email client or your computer

Recheck the isp/cables setttings........is this right frank! Thanks for the reply.  I got Microsoft Outlook working and so far have had no problems sending any emails.  So I think that somehow my Outlook Express just got corrupted.  Funny that you mentioned Mozilla, because I use Firefox as my browser, it's SO much faster than IE!!  >>> Ray

http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/

There is also a good step by step guide here:

This will however find out if the problem is with your email client or your computer

I took your ADVICE and downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird, and so far it has been flawless. I've figured out how to make it look like I want, but have one question: when I hit REPLY to an email, how do I increase the font size of the reply?  The type is so small I can barely see it, and I can't find anywhere in the program to change the font in the Reply box!  thanks, Ray

Solve : IMAGES DOES NOT SHOW IN SITE?

WHEN I WRITE IN A NOTEPAD AN HTML DOCUMENT (COMPRISING OF IMAGES ALSO)

and then upload it to my site
ONLY THE TEXT PORTION IS SHOWN, NOT THE IMAGES.

How to correct this?

ThanksUpload the images as well?Hi Raptor

Actually I went to this site

http://www.le.ac.uk/cc/dsss/docs/w2ktour.shtml

and then right click to "view SOURCE"

The HTML code of the page opened in wordpad and i saved it to my computer as a .htm document and then upload it here:

http://www.geocities.com/rhnjswl/never.htm

But all that you can see is the images are not there.

That is most likely because the photos need to be uploaded as well. Otherwise the server can not find them.

Solve : Can't open multiple IE windows - STILL!?

Answer»

I am running XP Home, and have done the SP2 update, but even before that, I cannot open more than one IE window - if clicking a link or purposely trying to open more than one IE window, it locks up, and says Not Responding (duh! Like I couldn't figure out it was STUCK!). If I need to open a link that will open in another window, I have to right-click, go to Properties, copy & paste the link into the current browser window, and sometimes that will work. A while back I got some info to try, and I keep coming back to the same error of some kind: there is a runtime error with Java. Also, I cannot get anymore Windows Updates, as it locks up at 55% each time. Any ideas out there? I'd sure appreciate it! I am somewhat of a novice, and am not real secure about diving into the registry, but I'm up to the challenge of trying to fix this - with proper guidance!BTW: Yes, I have ran SpyBot, Adaware, and have updated my NAV & ran that also. I have not and cannot get any Windows Updates, as it locks up before it finishes. I apologize, too - I see there is another similar post that I missed about this same problem. Newbies... yup, that's me!Maybe this?

You cannot open a new Internet Explorer window or nothing occurs after you click a linkMozilla FirefoxWell, I clicked on the posted link. Nothing happens, but after a short time - 30 sec's - minute or so - Not Responding shows up in the title bar, then an error message that the program has stopped responding. Also, I would consider Firefox, but this is on my son's PC that he will be taking soon. He is more familiar with IE, and is a pretty basic user, and does not want to change.
I managed to get to the link provided. I had been there before, but tried it again. In going down the list of fixes, when I do the Msjava.dll fix, I get this error message: "LoadLibrary("Msjava.dll) failed - This SPECIFIED module could not be found." Quote

Have you tried to reinstall Java?

I did try. Got the following error: Installer package could not be opened. VERIFY that the package exists and that you can access it or contact the vendor to verify this is a valid Windows Installer package.

Then it went to a screen where I could test what Java I have, and I have version 1.5.0_04, which is not the latest one, according to java.com

Yes, they are called Microsoft programmers.

I believe someone posted the same issue as you have, no fix was found if I recall correctly.

I guess this one might even stump Gate's monkeys...   I'll have to do some more investigating into mozilla & try to talk my son into trying it out.

I appreciate the advice - you & Computer_Commando have a lot of GREAT help tips, as I have checked some other topics, too. GLAD you guys are out there to help out the novices like me!
Thanks for trying on this one!
Since you're having trouble linking, I'll post the most important part here:

Windows XP and Windows 2000 only
Restart the computer to enable the changes to take effect.

If the problem is still not resolved, verify that the following registry values are present and correct:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{00020400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
Name: (Default)
Value: IDispatch
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{00020400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProxyStubClsid
Name: (Default)
Value: {00020420-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{00020400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProxyStubClsid32
Name: (Default)
Value: {00020420-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}

If the problem is still not resolved, reinstall Internet Explorer. If you are USING the version of Internet Explorer that is included with your operating system, reinstall or repair your operating system.I understand your reluctance to switch from IE to Mozilla. I also am reluctant to change away from the familiar, even when it's the better way to go. We stick with what we know.

But you may want to consider heeding Raptor's advice. If your son has the aptitude to operate IE, he can handle Mozilla. The differences are minor, and easy to comprehend - that's why we recommend it. Try it for a day or two - Internet Explorer will still be there, and you can always switch back.

Quote

I think part of my problem was not doing the restart - DUH! (my bad). If this does not work, can you tell me if REPAIRING or restoring the OS will delete all of my son's music files & data files? Otherwise, can somebody point me to some links about Firefox Mozilla? I may have to try that route, otherwise.
Thanks!Check this. Go into internet options/advanced tab. In the list should be a line that reads "Browse in new process". Make sure it is checked. Otherwise go to http://www.mozilla.org/

Solve : IE links?

Answer»

I had several links open and the pressed the tile or CASCADE button on the tool bar.   Since then when I open a link it will not open as maximised and I have to maximise each link page.   The main page OPENS as maximised.   What do I need to do to make all links open as maximised?Right click on the tool bar and change the option. This doesn't work.   The only OPTIONS are either cascade the windows or tile horizontally or vertically.   All I want is for all windows and links to open maximised so I don't have to maximise each new window (the first window opens maximised when I sign on).To increase or change the size, click on the Restore button, the middle one in the upper right hand corner of the toolbar.
Resize the window and then close the Internet ExplorerI tried this already but everytime I open a link it is not maximised.   I also tried maximising links, shutting down IE and rebooting but no success - the links sitll open small whereas before PRESSING the 'tile horizontal' setting on the toolbar they used to open maximised.
Does anybody know of any setting that can be changed to open all links as maximised?Don't know why you'd bother with browsing in different Windows.

Use Mozilla Firefox and ditch Internet EXPLORER all together.

Solve : Page can not be found! AGAIN!!?

Answer»

Hello !!
I feel a bit of a noob, well almost, lol. I've just installed windows xp home edition on my sons PC upstairs. It's connected via a wireless router from my PC downstairs. It was running on windows 98 and had no problems connecting to the internet but now iv'e installed XP i can't get onto the web. The pc is happy to say that we have a GOOD connection but every time i click on Internet Explorer, all i get is "Page can not be displayed" Iv'e tried searching for MSN and google but with no luck, have changed security settings, turned off my firewalls etc....... but with no luck, i'm sure that all it is will be one setting somewhere but i have failed to find it. can you help? as i'm getting fed up with him using mine and having to spend half an hour getting rid of spyware and adware lol.

Kind Regards,

WayneWayne, has it EVER worked on XP? Did you install the drivers for the wireless card/antenna? Is the software compatible? Try this... Click on Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet Connections ->Network Connections... Find your connection, and double-click on it, and click on the support tab... Do you have An IP address? Next, go back to the General Tab... Are packets being sent/received?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Hi Flame,
Thanks for the help, can't beleive this is as stumped me.
The internet as not worked on XP on the PC upstairs as it was running on windows 98 upto yesterday. I installed the drivers but the driver was not digitally signed, but it said in the instructions leaflet for the wireless card that i had to force it to accept it anyway. I have Xp on the PC downstairs and it has no problem sending the signal through the router. The upstairs PC does have an ip address and packets are being sent and received, and the utility for the card shows that we have a connection and a signal is being received. I have tried opening IE but as i stated all i get is page can not be displayed and also when i try and sign into Hotmail, it states i have no connection

Regards,

Waynecontol panel/internet options/connection tab
select "never dial connection" and "use lan" options. Also Wayne, in addition to what 2k dummy has said, look at the host computer... Is it allowing the computer upsatairs internet access, or is the upstairs computer not showing up at all?

[glb]Flame[/glb] Quote

look at the host computer

Connecting through a router should not need host computer. Needs a router assigned IP and router should be set as gateway. Is the router assigned as a DHCP server?

If yes, set all information to be obtained automatically. If not, then you will have to assign each computer an adress and also point it to the DNS server. (Which is your router.)Hi Guys,
Done all of the above, even uninstalled driver and card and reinstalled, but still no luck  . The upsatirs PC has a diff IP from the one downstairs and also the default gateway are diff, but the subnet mask our the same IP. When i click on repair, it states "The following steps to repair operation failed, Flushing the ARP cache,. If that is anything to do with it. The cable modem plugs directly into the router and then a ethernet cable FEEDS into my PC so i beleive my PC has no control over the signal sent the one upstairs.

hope this helps

Regards,

Waynes Quote
also the default gateway are diff

The gateway has to be the same. In this case your router is acting as the gateway.Wayne... Who is your ISP? You might try giving them a call... Perharps this is a common issue to them? Maybe they have online help documents?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Hello
I've reset my router and modem and now have the same gateway IP on both PC's and are able to repair connection on the PC upstairs. as it was failing to flush the ARP cache. But still the problem persists. Can't understand why the PC worked before with exactly the same set up, but just because ive installed XP this problem arises.

Regards

WayneWindows XP may need to know the DNS server. Which is your Router's adress.High Guys,
Just about to give up and pay some one to sort it out :-/.I have noticed a bizzare factor in this problem, thought i'd have one more go at rectifying the problem, so i went upstairs and turned on the PC, same old thing, receiving and sending  packets, wireless card utility stating good connection, tryed IE, same, Page can not be FOUND. Then i remembered, last night i'd connected the cable modem directly into my PC, so went downstairs and checked and found that the router wasn't plugged into the modem, so how was it sending information to the PC upstairs. When i turned the power off to the router and checked the PC upstairs, i had no connection and on plugging the power back in, i had a signal again. Is it all possible my router is icking up and sending a signal from some one elses connection, stupid i know, but thought i'd ask, will try anything at the moment, lol. If this has nothing to do with it then so be it and would like to thank you for your help in this very weird case.

Thanks guys

WayneThe router can be accessed regardless of a modem connection.Sorry Raptor,
I know this is completely nothing to do with the original question to hand, but how does a router with just a power cable connected to it, send packets to a PC when it as nothing to send. what is it actually sending to the PC upstairs. Sorry, but i'm getting more and more confused by the day, lol. I could understand if my cable modem was plugged into the router as this would allow it to have an internet connection and therefor would be able to send packets, but WITHOUT this, surely it would have no signal to send as i only have an ethernet card in the back of my PC

Thanks anyway,

kind regards,

Wayne

Solve : Problems with secure sign in?

Answer»

I'm having problems when trying to sign in to secure sites such as ofoto or my bank.  I get the standard "cannot find server" PAGE.  I've run spysweeper and Mcafee both ok and germ FREE.  I've GONE through the trouble shooting screen and have checked everything listed.  The problem exists in both the AOL browser and IE  I'm running explorer version 6.0.029.  One thing that is possibly related... I cannot run active X controls REGARDLESS of what security settings I use.

Any thoughts??Well you need active X to run it. Also are you behind anything that messes up with your IP like security things? Firewall won't effect it im talking about privacy programs that messes with your IP if so then try disableing it then try it again. If that dont work then clear out your temps, cookies and restore default to all your web settings. It should work thenBlocking port 443 OUTBOUND with a firewall will, I believe, stop secure sites loading. If you use a rule based firewall such as Kerio check to see if this is the problem.

ActiveX does not have anything to do with the problem.

I have been seeing random words being made into links. I've run Adaware and Norton Anti-Virus but neither are picking anything up. How can I fix this?

Since I received my computer, I was not being interupted by any pop-ups, but for some REASON, in the past two week, I have FOUND myself plagued with them. Why would this happen and how can I fix it?
In case any of this should matter, and I don't know if it will, I will type it out:

A few weeks ago, I accidentily deleted my cookies, and the connection I had set up was deleted (I have no idea why, but I was able to re-make it). Around the same time, these problems occured.

Solve : Possible modem problem??

Answer»

I have three computers in my house that are connected to the internet, and my dads laptop, and my xbox, all hooked into the internet through the same modem, and because they are on the same modem, i should be able to save a FILE on one computer and open it on one of my other ones, but for some reason it wont let me

other example: i should be able to print on any of the 3 computers, but i can only print using the computer directly next to the printer

example 3: I downloaded XBC (Xbox Connect) for my computer, which should allow me to play certain xbox GAMES online, so i open up the program, and i try to join a room that has been hosted or i try to host a room, and it says that first XBC has to accept my xbox into the system and asks me to select a network adapter to allow it into the system, so a window pops up that should have a list of network adapters but instead is just blank white space, if i click "OK", it says that i DIDNT choose a network adapter and to choose one then try again, but i cant cus the window is blank

my mom says these problems are all related to i figure they can all be fixed at once, so if anyone has any ideas that would be greatly appreciated

thanks in advanceAre you using a Router? You MAY be blocking ports required by your Xbox software.

Did you?Yes Fed I did as you suggested no help, I am in the process of running the spyware suggested, have run spybot previously, just ran microsoftspyware prog, so far no spyware.Download & run Hijackthis then post the saved logfile at the same address.
http://www.hijackthis.de/index.php?langselect=englishOk have completed all suggestions;
Adware picked up 1 tracking cookie, removed it.

All other spyware progs found nothing.

Hijackthis returned one suspect file;

  Must be fixed!

Not sure what to do with this, Delete it?

closed BROWSER reopened nothing changed yet.Run another Hijackthis scan, tick it & hit the fixit button.I tell ya this thing is tough, I've been working on it myself for about 2 weeks now, I can say that I found out something else fooling around here tonight, if I click on the addresss bar drop down it spends a ton of time doing something. I have already cleared the history of this.

Fixed file mentioned above ran another scan and anylized again it was gone, got rid of a couple others I wasn't 100% sure about just in case closed browser tried again, no luck..... You may have to reboot to make those changes have an effect.
You could also download & run ccleaner.
http://www.ccleaner.comYou guy's have a lot of good Ideas and suggestions, after completing every one of them, I'm affraid we haven't changed much. Solve : IE address problem?

Answer»

I have emptied or deleted all files/folders that would place a web SITE in the drop down box. I still have several that show up when I begin to type in text. Any idea where they may be residing?

DanTry this... On that text box where they APPEAR, press the down arrow key, and put your mouse over the first entry that shows up... Press the delete key until all entries are gone... This should solve your problem

[glb]Flame[/glb]The IE address bar will not LET me delete entries directly from the drop down box. I have had to clean favorites and history to remove entries. There are, however, entries that I can not remove. Are there other locations that the address bar pulls from?

DanYour favorites always stay as entries...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Try using a program such as Crap Cleaner Thanks Raptor. Good program, but it did not find the addresses. The addresses that I can not delete are placed in the drop down box when I type the first w for a web address. They are places that I did visit, but have not been added to favorites.

DanDid youtag all the relevant options in Crap Cleaner? It works fine here.Yeah I have this EXACT same problem, and ran CCleaner and Clean Up and it didn't have any effect

The addresses that are stuck in the address bar are all ones I've visited, not SAVED in my favourites, and it seems almost random how certain ones have got stuck in there and others havent.

Not doing any harm (well that i can see....) but would be good to be able to get rid of them!

Solve : Can't download various files?

Just yesterday my PC decieded that it didn't want to download any mpeg files from the net. It tells me that it is requesting new codec and then I get an error message "invalid class string". I have good antivirus and anti-spyware so it isn't because of that and I uninstalled and reinstalled Windows Media Player with no results. HELP
BG.You may be blocking Windows Media Player with a firewall.

I don't have a firewall installed. That's mistake number one so far.

Does this occur to all .MPEG files?

Have you removed Codecs? It appears to occur with all mpeg files. I have not removed codecs. How do I do that?
BGYou might want to try DOWNLOADING a codec pack such as DivXPlease educate me. Is downloading a codec pack like DIVX a way to remove all codecs? What function or solution will it perform or provide?
BGIT will install Codecs that you may need to watch .MPEG files and others.Raptor,
If I GO to DivX.com I only see a bundle pack that includes the DivX player which I already have and a DivX Pro codec. Is that what you are referring to?Raptor,
By the way, I love "It was the machines, Sarah"!I'll be back.

If you have allready tried installing DivX player (Which contains additional codecs) you can try restoring the computer to a point where the problem did not yet occur. It is not something I would try, but it might work.

Solve : internet explorer question?

Answer»

xp home IE6 ver 6.0.29 sp2
when i type a url in the address bar e.g. msn.com or www.msn.com it does not work for a very long time or just gets stuck but if i type http://www.msn.com it works normally. is there a preference key or a registry key turned off or something like that going on thanksFirstly, check out the options in
IE>Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>Search from the Address Bar.

Browsers work on IP addresses not words.

Then REMEMBER that your browser checks your host FILE before anything else to see if the words you put in are in the hosts file as an IP address.

If it's not in your hosts file your browser checks the big hosts file in cyberspace to get the IP address.

(I guess somewhere in here it checks your restricted & trusted sites too)

Upon finding the IP address your browser then uses it to send a request to the site & then it's out of your hands.

Making sense so far I hope.

Remembering that your browser checks your hosts file first you can by-pass everything else by putting entries directly into your hosts file that will point your browser to the correct IP address.

Hope this helps. Quote

Use Mozilla Firefox.

Solve : IE Disconnecting?

Answer»

I am trying to help a neighbour who, for reasons that are about to become obvious, cannot post the question himself.

He is using Windows XP(Home) and IE6, with an internal dial-up modem. His virus-checker is AVG and he is using the XP FIREWALL.

He is unable to use OE, because, an instant after he clicks Read Mail, the telephone-line is disconnected. He is unable to use IE for a period of more than a very few minutes, because yet again, without prompting from him, the line will be disconnected.

In IE Options, Connections, Settings, Advanced, he has un-ticked the Disconnect boxes: this has made no difference. He has also deleted Cookies, and Temporary Files, and has set maximum space allotted to such files to 50 mb. None of that has made any difference, either.

Another computer in the same house can carry out all these tasks without difficulty.

Any SUGGESTIONS about what might be wrong, and how he could put it right ?

Has this problem been present since the system was first setup or only a recent development?
I would advise them to disable XP Firewall and use Zonealarm instead anyway.

Have they tried a virus/spyware scan?I agree 100% !   Quote

No.

I myself use ZA, and shall pass your message to him.

AVG reports his system as being all clear.  He has not so far been able to stay on-line for long enough to down-load SpyBot, but I have urged him to perservere.

Thank you for your help with this one.Don't even have a firewall loaded until you get this resolved.I shall tell him that now -- many thanks.OE>Tools>Options>Connections Tab... you will see it.   Quote
OE>Tools>Options>Connections Tab... you will see it.

I think that I have missed something  -- what is it that I am going to see ?
Gimme a minute...
HMMM? That didn't come out very clearly.

Anyway, the bottom checkbox says 'Hangup after sending & receiving.

Add to that the setting of 'check email every x minutes' and that could explain IE dropping out too.No, that is perfect, and as usual I was in too much of a hurry.  I shall report to him shortly, and let you know.

Thank you for taking all this trouble, in the early hours of the morning, too. Quote

Not for me.   Quote

YES, he has made sure that 'Hang up after sending/receiving' is unticked, but it has made no difference, I am afraid.
In dial up networking, right click the connection and select properties. Click configure. Click connection. Uncheck "disconnect if idle for more than" x min. When I follow those steps as far as 'Configure', I do not get a window containing the choice 'Connections'.  Could you just confirm the route, please.
