Solve : Internet Explorer help!?

Answer»

Yup its me again. The man with way to many problems. Anyways in my family has a total of 3 different computers. 1 I just bought for myself. My moms. And then my sisters. My sisters coputer is the worst. I think it has about 20+ viruses. Or something like that. Anyways I rarely use it unless I want to use Photoshop(Dont ask why I put PS on that computer) anyways I went to go on the internet and all this weird stuff started happening. All these new ICONS started appearing on the computer. So I did what I thought was the smartest THING to do. I deleted them. Then I went to add/remove thing and removed them from my computer. Well after about 30+ minutes of battling with all these random things appearing on my computer I went to go on the internet. Well to my suprize its not working anymore. I double click on the IE icon and when its all done loading up I get NOTHING. And at the top of the IE think it says SOMETHINGS like syntax error. Does anyone know whats wrong or how to fix it?nice tale of woe> but what is the  operating system with the problem? Please Read This First - Viruses & Spyware

Install the programs recommended. If you are certain it is infected with '20 viruses; , why did you not run a virus scanner?I've run spybot and ad-aware pretty much once a week on the thing. It never gets rid of the stuff on my computer. Like I have this thing called Winka and other stuff, if you want to know all I can post them because I got a list on a piece of paper. I actually just found a good site that was trying to help me get rid of all my viruses and stuff but without the internet working on the computer with the problem I dont think I will be able to do anything.

But my problem is now, I cant ever start up IE. I have Win. 95 on this computer. The computer cant read anything. I tryed logging onto AIM and it says there is no connection.

What if I restore a LAST save thing? Do you think that will help? also if I do that, how would I do it and how would I be able to get back to the main screen with all my icons?http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=242191 it may or may not apply to you?  i guess you have tried safe mode start windows normally? f8 key on boot..

Solve : Accessing two web based programs at once?

Answer»

I'm having trouble at work with PEOPLE trying to access two web based programs at the same time. When a transaction is made in one of the programs the other closes out. Is there some sort of setting that will allow them to have both programs up and functional at the same time??is this using remote access?I think one of the programs uses remote access.info>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q300/5/46.asp&NoWebContent=1 rl......heres a little tip.....tell them to open the first site in a explorer WINDOW ....then minimize that site and open up the next site in ANOTHER explorer window......that way you can have more than one site open at at time.....if you do it the way they are ...as soon as they put in the ADDRESS for the second site ...the first one closes......
This should GET them back on track

Solve : http://www.gmail.com?

Answer»

When I type http://www.gmail.com the URL changes into this https://gmail.google.com/?dest=http%3A%2F%2Fgmail.google.com%2Fgmail

It works the same and there's nothing wrong, (Just in case you start thinking WINDOWS XP is throwing a mutiny again, MERLIN   ) but I am just curious as to why it would do that.maybe the website script?   and if you pc does a mutiny...will you walk the plank It's quite common PRACTICE for webmasters to do that sort of thing. Often, it's simply a redirect to a specific version of a site (say, if Flash or Javascript is not detected, it would put you to a HTML and Images only version). They sometimes also use this to show referrer information etc.

Another thing webmasters sometimes do is BUY multiple domains. In this case, I think Google are hosting this on gmail.google.com but, quite rightly, spotted that it wasn't exactly the snappiest URL. So, they bought gmail.com and simply pointed it at the original server.

The latter part of the URL to me looks like a bit of validation or verificaction of some sort. An additional security measure, perhaps? Quote

Firefox is showing a Lock icon in the navigation bar. Must be the additional security measure. It doesn't APPEAR on any other secured websites, though.

Thanks for the information Corrosive, I appreciate it that you digged up my little thread and gave me my long awaited answer.  The URL is a simple redirect. Hover the mouse pointer over it and look at the status bar. Quote

I understand that, I was just curious as to why the adress would be written like that.http://%73%70%61%6D%74%72%61%70%40%6E%65%74%73%63%61%70%65%2E%6E%65%74

Its just obfuscated. The non observant user will not notice that it is being redirected to a non-secure server.

Solve : Unable to log-in to any internet site..?

Answer»

Hi All,

My first post and I am not too "computer-literate" so please GO easy!

I have been tearing my hair out for over a week now TRYING to fix a problem without success.

I have a number of internet gambling (uk bookmakers) accounts which I can no longer access because whenever I try to "log-in" I get the message "This page cannot be displayed" and I can find no solution to overcome this problem!

I have spoken to PEOPLE who claim to know about these things and followed their suggestions which have included checking/lowering my "security SETTINGS", turning off my "firewall" running programmes like Norton Anti-virus, Ad-aware, No Adware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Registry Mechanic but NOTHING solves the problem! It is driving me NUTS!!!!!!!

I never had any problem until just over a week ago. Unfortunately I do not have exclusive use of the computer and have shared access with 3 other users but none of them can shed any light on this. Indeed they too are frustrated because apparently they can no longer sign on to MSN Messenger.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can someone out there HELP??

Thank You!Forgot to say I have also already tried the following advice but it didn't work either!

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Go to Tools - Internet Options (IE 6.0) and empty your File Cache, Cookies and History.

Or

Start -> Settings -> Configuration -> Internet Options

And empty your File Cache, Cookies and History.

If that does not work, go to the Advanced tab and set your Internet settings to default.

There's no way to tell that it's your computer unless you either format and reinstall Windows or try to log in to the webpage on another PC.

Solve : SLOW Internet Explorer?

Answer»

I had recently "cleaned up" my computer and regularly run AdAware, Spysweeper and Norton Anitivirus PROGRAMS (I also clear temp. internet files) with a good degree of success. However, over the last week, web pages are taking forever to load, especially those on Yahoo.
I've run my virus and spyware programs and nothing comes up as suspect. Is there anything else I can do to get to the root of this problem? I'm clueless...any error messages like 404 page cannot be displayed..what internet connection is used 56k adsl cable?..what o/s/..and what ie browser is used.?.more info hopefully more solutions..Sorry--I use Windows '98 on a cable modem and I believe Internet Explorer 6.0.
I don't get many error messages like the one MENTIONED, but have started to get alerts for internal programs on my HP which say they will be shut down. Also, some pages are not re-setting when I return to them. Sounds like a hidden virus that can't be detected, to me.
Anyway, thanks for the reply. I'll tell you as much as I know. Not much of a 'tech-ie", here...ok its your choice but i have seen so many people using win9x and IE6 with problems it a joke...try this >http://www.wilderssecurity.net/bhblaster.html and download this also if you can it may come in handy>http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/   added to reply>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q220902youknow what helps too is going to control panel > internet options> and dleete files and clear history... and have you checked for errors and defrag'd lately?Webpages may take longer to load because you may have cleaned your temporary Internet files folder. If you have a slow connection, you will notice the difference.

To Raptor--  I thought clearing out temporary internet files was something one should do to optimize the best browser performance.
Slow it down?DELETING it will save Hard Disk Drive space, but it will also force your browser you download certain files, such as photos, again which it could normally access from the Hard Disk Drive.

This should only apply to very slow connections or slow WEBSITES.

Solve : bug on almost every page I visit?

Answer»

I have a BUG that shows up on many pages that I view. It looks like an image with a bad link. More details on what it looks like are in this screenshot: http://www.geocities.com/mschardt2003/bug.JPG. (the red circles around the box.)
When I right CLICK on the square and click properties the window shows this: http://www.geocities.com/mschardt2003/properties.jpg. Another thing I found out about this code is that it adds itself to a page. I know this because I viewed the source code of my website and found the address for it. I deleted it and saved the page. I then refreshed the site in the browser. It was still there. It's becoming really anoying because it messes up the layout of the page and makes it look all ugly, especially since it's effecting both of my own webpages. I've tried searching on the internet for this bug, but couldn't find anything. Any help would be great. My specs are Windows XP with IE 6.
Michael......Does this occur on all pages? When did all this start? Does this happen on all images or just some?
Had you downloaded anything just prior to this happening ?
Have you checked to be sure you haven't lost your Sun systems java. Could it be an active X issue .... If you suspect its a pest.....what do you USE to scan for those .

let us know

dl65 It doesn't occur on every page, but it does occure on many of them. I recently noticed that it occcurs  on bith my desktop and notebook computer. It started about a month ago or so. It is only that image, but I get that same image on several different page including my own.Scan for spyware.

Have you reset your Internet settings to default yet to see if that has any effect?

Michael......Do you share any files with both your laptop and desktop....? Is it possible to post a link to any of   the pages that you cannot view properly.....? The fact that you have this issue on two pcs suggests that you MAY have some pest which is causing the problem....Do you ever have them networked or connected to the net via a router or hub ?

let us know

dl65  My spyware software is Spy Sweeper. My laptop is connected through a Linksys router. I don't share anyfiles between the two computers. The links that I've noticed the bug on where as follows:

http://www.altavista.com
http://www.lycos.com
http://www.geocities.com/mschardt2003 My site.
http://www.geocities.com/mschardt2003/knightrider/frames.html. My 2nd site.

I'll post more sites as I discover the bug on them. What if you use a browser such as Mozilla Firefox?I installed firefox, but the bug still showed up on the same sites.http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q283807 Michael....Strange ....I just tried the links you posted....3 of them WORK fine .......the lycos site doesnt ......Perhaps its down for some reason .......I checked it on another pc with the same result.

Solve : OE 6 SP2 can't reply to or forward emails?

Answer»

New computer XP Home sp2 pre-installed. In OE cannot reply to or forward emails. Get message " OE has encountered a problem and MUST close" Is this something to do with SP2?  I've been searching for days and cannot get help.

Can anyone here supply any help?http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q329570 it may apply  also check the firewall  in sp2J. Mohnachev.....given that your pc is new.....have you ever been able to SEND a Email or just receive?
It almost sounds as if your Outlook Express mail account isn't configured correctly or it may not be selected as the default Email program.......Are you using a new ISP or is it one that you had previously?  Check to be sure your outgoing server (SMPT) is configured correctly.
To check these ..open outlook express.....click ...tools ....then select accounts then click on the "mail" tab and click "properties" check both the Incoming and outgoing server settings.....( these are provided by your server)
let us know how you make out.

dl65  Hi Merlin 2,

I'm not sure if I am replying correctly, I have disabled  SP2 firewall, I use ZoneAlarm Pro.  I also allowed attachments and this doesn't make any difference, I am still being told that  "OE has encountered a etc ..."  Hi dl65,
Yes I can send and receive MESSAGES no problem also send attachments, I haven't received one yet though.

I have another computer (stand ALONE, not networked) with XP Home SP1 with EXACTLY the same set up or options and can forward and reply with no problem. ISP was the same( long story, I am using the old pc with a free offer from a dsl isp that I received with the new pc) OE is the default email on the new pc too. Checked with the isp to make sure it's configured correctly. But since I haven't seen anyone else with this problem I'm OBVIOUSLY doing something wrong.

Thank you and Merlin_2 for your attention to this problem.Hi merlin_2 & dl65, this may be too late to be of any help. But it had to be re-formatted and XP and SP2 re-installed on the advice of the store technician and he did it!
This solved the problem. Sorry for the delay but I
couldn't deal with this until last week.

Thanks again for your efforts.J. Mohnachev.....Glad to hear your problem has been resolved.. I'm curious , did you receive a original copy of Windows XP home edition as well as the cd with windows SP2 on it from the dealer you bought the pc from?

Firefox does not remove or overwrite Internet Explorer. You can tell Firefox to be used as the standard browser, but Internet Explorer will still remain on your computer.

Thank you for the further clarification...

Hope this helps

BenI have windows XP and I'm having exactly the same problem as Malecio with yahoo.  And buttons from some other pages don't work.  Also, when I try to use the Search option from the start button a window pops up and the dog is there but there are no search options.

This might have something to do with it, but here's what I was doing before it happened:
Around that time I had just recently downloaded the new Service Pack and Microsoft Spyware Program Beta.  I also have Adaware 6.0 and Norton Antivirus.  I think I was doing a scan with one of the first two programs and a window popped up saying that something happened with Norton Antivirus so it needed to be reinstalled.  So I stopped the scan and I uninstalled Norton.  However, when the computer restarted to finish the job, my adaware 6 popped up mentioning Samantec and a change to a registry value .  I accidentally clicked the button to block it and everytime I started the computer afterwards I got a script error.  I did something to try and remedy it and the popup stopped coming up, but I still have the problems I've stated.

I think Ben's remedy might work but I just want to make sure b/c I've messed around with the computer too much already.Just tried to do system restore too and when I click on the icon, NOTHING COMES up.

I wrote a day or two ago that my IE icon wouldn't work. WELL, I have done a LOT of virus scanning, etc. And TODAY I was messing around and found out that I can get onto the internet with IE if I go to on the desktop:

My Network Places and right CLICK
then go to explore
then go to the internet explorer at the bottom of the list and double click

This takes me to my home page with no problem. So why don't the IE icons on my desktop work? Neither the one on the desktop nor the one on the toolbar works. And I tried to figure out if I could make the internet explorer subfolder some kind of shortcut icon, but I can't.

Anyone have anything to say about this one? I am at a loss for sure!

Thanks!

DJ
Well.... Are you using Windows XP? I KNOW that if you customize the desktop, you can set an Internet Explorer icon.... It will automitically direct you to the right file... Did you make the shortcut(s) yourself?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Nope - using Windows 2000 ProfessionalSo you did NOT make the shortcuts yourslef, right?

[glb]Flame[/glb]No, I didn't make them myself. And I didn't change anything since they were working a week ago. So I am not sure what happened unless I accidentally did something that I wasn't aware of.

I am really baffled on this one.

DJDJ......Can you do this ......click start ....now when that window pops up ....go up to the internet explorer icon and double click on it ....will the page open ?

let us know

dl65

When I do that, there is no internet explorer icon. All I see is:

Juno
New Office Document
Open Office Document
Set Program Access Defaults
Windows Update
Winzip
SBC Yahoo! DSL
SBC Yahoo! Messenger
Etc. - the rest are the regular choices.... but no IE

Also, another thing I noticed (if this helps solve the problem any?).........

Now, if I have two IE explorer windows open, I can not go to the bottom pf the SCREEN and swith back and forth using the items on the tool bar. I have to minimize everything and then click on the item I want on the screen. Whereas before, when everything was working correctly, I could swith back and forth like you are suppoed to be able to do. Do you still think it is some SORT or virus/trojan/hijacker/etc.?

Solve : mpeg question?

Answer»

Hello, everyone.  I have a quick question.  Many TIMES, when I am on a webpage that has links to mpegs, the webpage will disappear whenever i click on the link to play the mpeg.  The mpeg still plays however, in media player although the site where I had gotten it from is no LONGER on my screen.  Can someone explain to me why this is the case and can I do anything about it?  Thank you!!It sounds like you have your 'puter SET to open new links in a separate window, this is fine. Take a LOOK in your Taskbar at the bottom of your screen and SEE if in fact both the webpage and the media player are both showing there. If so,  clicking on the webpage should bring it back to the top.

you dont have the ful screen option on do you ....try pushing the F11 key .....
What operating system are you using

Let us know

dl65  yes theres a tick next to address bar, no im not in full screen mode, and whats an operating system?Your address bar may have gotten tucked up under the toolbar. Slowly move your mouse/pointer to where the address bar should be and then move up slowly. When your pointer turns into a double-headed arrow click/hold/drag the line down a bit and see if your address bar appears.

If the pointer doesn't change to the  arrow, you may have your toolbars locked.

Solve : One more time... IE STILL won't open from icon?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

I am going to try to bring this up one more time...

Since about two weeks ago now, I can not bring up IE using icons on my desktop. The only way I can get it to come up is to go to my desktop and right click on "My network Places", then go down to "explore". When the list in the folder comes up, I can double click on IE there and it will come up. This tells me my program is not corrupt (which, by the way, I have uninstalled and REINSTALLED at least 3 times trying to fix this problem). When I double click on the icon on the desktop, it makes the sound as if the program is opening, then it immediately makes the sound like it is shutting down. Nothing ever pops up or anything. It just immediately tries to open, then immediately closes.

I have done every scan that I have seen everyone suggest to check for hijackers, trojans, viruses, etc., etc.

I have also done all the checks on my system settings as people have suggested in my previous posts. Everything has been set the way you all have told me to set it.

I have Windows 2000 Professional. I have not installed anything onto my computer in the last few months - so I know this is not a result of any new installation. Actually I have done nothing different than usual. All of a sudden it did this!

The reason I am grasping for a solution again is because in the past 5 days or so (since I posted my first post on this site), I have had over 10 people e-mail me privately saying that they too have recently had this problem with not being able to open IE from their icon. So something is going on! I searched the microsoft site as recent as last Friday to SEE if I could find an announcement about this problem. I didn't find anything.

Also, I do not know if this will help - but if I open more than one IE window, I can not go back and forth from window to window from the toolbar icons. I have to minimize each window and then I can pick whichever window I want to maximize. It is all too time CONSUMING and FRUSTRATING!

So all that to say that I am still looking for help from you guys and gals that are brilliant at figuring thses issues out. Like I said before, I am by no means even close to an expert when it comes to computers. But I can follow directions if anyone has any more ideas. I would GREATLY appreciate it!

DJHave you contacted your computer manufacturer about this issue?

[glb]Flame[/glb]No, haven't contacted the manufacturer. I wouldn't think that would be the answer since this computer is at least 3 years old and has worked fine up until now. Plus, I continue to get e-mails privately from others saying they are recently having this same problem as well. So I would think this has to be some sort of "infection".

Solve : Can not open one website?

Answer»

I am about to go nuts over this problem. I can not open one website. Everyone else who tries it on their computers can open it; I've opened it on a different COMPUTER. But, on mine all I get "the page cannot be displayed."

I am using Windows 98 2E, DSL (through Earthlink) and IE 6. Earthlink has had me try so many things, I can't even remember them all. I have no idea if it's the result of something I downloaded. I have run Spybot and Ad Aware and AVG VIRUS and Trend Micro Virus. I have no trouble with any other websites, just this one.

This is the address of the website: http://home.earthlink.net/~lvopr8r/loop/

Can someone please help?

Judy Quote

...Earthlink has had me try so many things, I can't even remember them all...

I assume you cleared all IE6 temporary files, cookies?
Download, install and run this:  http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

It's probably a corrupted registry entry or something obscure.
Thank you for the suggestion, but I downloaded and ran the CC Cleaner and I'm still getting the same thing.

Yes, I have cleared cookies and temp. files. I have downloaded IE 6 3 times. The first 2, I couldn't get the repair to work. The third time it worked, but I still couldn't access the web site.

I'm about ready to call an exorcist.

JudySince your ISP is Earthlink and the website is Earthlink, Earthlink is the problem.  If you still have a dialup account with another ISP, see if you can access the website.I no longer have dial-up, just DSL. I feel Earthlink is the problem too, but although they have tried their best (I was REALLY impressed with how much they tried), they couldn't solve the problem.

At one point, they suggested I check with Sprint local DSL, since that is really my provider (Earthlink just handles the account or something LIKE that). I called them and they told me it was a problem with my computer and I needed to contact my computer manufacturer. I am no expert on this, but fail to see how it could be my computer's fault.

I'm ready to just admit defeat. I am going to buy a new laptop in a month or so, maybe that will connect me to the site.

I appreciate all input though.
JudyI just had something similar happen to me.  One and only one url was extremely slow to load.  No problem with other installed OS's on same computer and 2 other computers on home network.  I tried everything, but no luck.  I had an image BACKUP that was a month old and after restoration, all was okay.  It was probably a registry setting that got corrupted.

Point being:  perform image backups regularly.

In your case, reinstall Windows.I finally figured out the problem. I had installed a new version of AVG antivirus, and was having some small problems. I uninstalled and reinstalled it, and now I can access the webpage.

I appreciate all your help though.

JudyThanks for the update.  I never would have thought AVG was the problem.  I used AVG v6 for a while, it never gave me any problems.

I recommend that you perform image backups, every week or two.  http://www.symantec.com/sabu/ghost/ghost_personal/

Solve : IE7 Paging File Problems?

Answer»

I downloaded and installed IE7 at the weekend. It seemed to work fine but ever since, I get a message to run CHKDSK at every re-boot/startup and an error message re "You have no paging file or the file is too small….."

I have tried updating the settings for Virtual memory via the control panel but no changes seem to be saved.

I have tried booting into Safe Mode but the screen APPEARS stuck, does nothing and then re-boots normally (there does seem to be a lot of hard disk activity though so I wonder if it's ALSO running CHKDSK). I just can't see what's happening off the bottom of the screen.

When my PC does finally start up, I'm getting errors with nearly every program I try to open, although I'm not really SURPRISED about this. I have uninstalled Internet Explorer and that has made no difference.

Please would someone be ABLE to offer me some ADVICE on how best to sort this problem. The next thing I intend to try is a restore (if Windows has created a restore point for me) but I've not done this before so I'm not that confident it will solve all my problems.

Many thanksHow about telling us EXACTLY how you accessed "settings for Virtual memory via the control panel"?  What are the current settings?
