On one pc I am fixing for a friend,I canot connect to the internet through IE6. I can connect through the CompuServe PPPoE client and can connect to AOL, but can only browse the web from Compuserve. WinXP Home/SP2 installed. I can release and renew my ip from my router and have dns resolution when pinging Yahoo.com. I can browse and attach to a local network share on my server as admin.
Firefox when downloaded and installed did not work either. Originally I could not repair tcp/ip from the command line using netsh init ip repair and would get rpc server unavail. and could not use the disk manager in admin tools/component services without getting the same error. I even cloned this drive and did an in place upgrade of XP with no change in symptoms. BTW I did set IE back to all default settings and have disabled Windows firewall. Zone Alarm is not installed, but had been previously. The funny thing is that the True Vector service still is trying to start and will not let me make any changes to the service. I have no idea what may have uninstalled or deleted on this machine.

I did a repair on my nic interface both automatically and from the command line(flush dns cache/registerdns etc.) I have scanned for virus/trojans/spyware and have eliminated several problems. I have TAKEN off SP2 and reloaded SP2, I have reloaded IE from the command line.
I have tried various IE and tcp/ip fixes given through links on this site. I have scanned my system files with scf/scannow (no problems). I am probably leaving out a lot of proceedures tried due to typing too may words in my post. I can reload XP on another drive and everything connects to the internet properly, so I know that I have an O/S problem and/or registry problem most likely. I even used a registry/system problem program that found over 200 problems. Thought my problem would be resolved....No Luck.

Some of my issues have had to have been resolved because I can now use admin tools/component services/disk manager and can do the netshell repair of tcp/ip from the command line with no ERRORS such as "The RPC servir is unavailable".

Nothing tried to date will allow me to connect to the internet through IE. Any suggestion will be appreciated as I am at this time ready to pick up my trusty axe handle and put this machine out of it's misery.Hi scmartin,

I dont think I know as much abt netwrok as u, but i encounter a smiliar problem once.

I use IE and can only view my internet service provider's WEBSITE. In the end, I DISCOVER that it's bcoz I did not set my PROXY settings correctly.

Tools > Internet Options > Connections

CheersYou said you reloaded XP on another drive and everything worked. Boot from the XP cd on the drive you want to work and use that to repair the O/S or you could just reformat.I have already done an in place upgrade/repair and the symptoms did not change. I loaded XP on another drive just to prove the point that the O/S and or registry was the real culprit. Thanks for the suggestion. Everything I have done should have corrected the symptoms.

I installed FIREFOX and it doesn't remember TEXT size.WRubin.....I just checked my MACHINES .....and what I noticed is that if you have Version 1.0  the size doesn't save when you go to another page ........however if you download V 1.0.1 .......if you change text size it remains that size until you change it again......

Do you have a FIREWALL installed? It might be preventing you from viewing the images...

For some reason I get weird symbols instead of fonts opening certain websites.
I have cleaned my favorites to open them up normally but no succes.....
I NEED to open these pages daily, so I am really stuck. Other pages open without any problems.
Probably characters your system doesn't know how to read such as Japanese/Chinese or Hebrew.  Check out Babelfish to see if they can translate it or look up the URL in Google for a translation.  There's a great little IE addon called Storm Translator.  It gives IE a new toolbar and you can translate from many languages to many other languages.  It's not free.unfortunately not that simple.
We are talking about the KLM (dutch airline) website and some other widely USED sites. They used to work fine on my computer, but all of the sudden they upen up in symbols.......

Clear the cache and temp internet files then have IE check for new versions of the page every time it goes to a site.  Could also TRY Firefox.Cleared all the files, but how do I make  IE check for new versions of the page every time it goes to a site? Hope it will work, if not I will try Firefox!

Try updating your Microsoft apps from the Microsoft update page.  You should be working with IE6.Updtes are automatic, am using Windows XP and IE6,

Hi, I have windows xp, Norton, And Ad-aware.  My computer was running fine until a month ago.  I now can't click on certain links. I hear the click but nothing happens.  This only happens on some sites that before I had no problem opening.  I am a computer beginner   so simple terms please    Thank you!I'm betting that the links you're trying to open will open in another window otherwise known as a popup.  I'm ALSO betting that you've installed some sort of popup blocker and this is preventing the link to open.Thanks for the reply Joleen. I cant go into secured websites such as my wells fargo or credit UNION accounts. The computer tells me that THe connection was REFUSED when attempting to contact.

Also my floppy DISK drive does not WORK it tells me " No ID ADDRESS MARK WAS FOUND ON FLOPPY DISK" and this happens with every disk.Contact wells fargo and credit union - they will have helplines with staff who sort out peoples connections for them. i.e. ADJUST your settings to allow you to logon to their websites

I can only have on IE web browser open at a time. Let's say that I'm at hotmail.com checking my email and I want to view another web page and open up IE again it will close the hotmail.com (first browser open). [glb]Flame[/glb]Well the trojans were in my high speed security suite, so i uninstalled the security suite, and then i downloaded trojan hunter and still found 2 trojans and it renamed them so they can not be activated. I then scanned again and it hasn't found any more trojans. I just did a scan on adaware and it showed that i have zero spyware.Try this... Run and install any Windows Updates that you can find on http://www.microsoft.com ... This might work...

[glb]Flame[/glb]If you have the Yahoo Toobar installed, this may be causing the problem. Try uninstalling the Toolbar, reboot and see what happens.

Every single TIME I try to go to a webpage in IE (6) I GET a pop-up message that says:

"Security Warning
The current Web Page is trying to open a site on your intranet. Do you want to allow this?"


Then it gives a site address, and a Yes/No choice.


Is there any way I can STOP this message? I usually get TWO or three of these windows popping up for EVERY SINGLE webpage I surf to! This is very very obnoxious.

I would be inclined to format the hard drive and then do a CLEAN install of Win XP pro as opposed to attempting a repair . ( remember if you go this way to save any important data onto a cd ,before formatting or it will be lost ) .... After the clean install , don't forget to go to M/S update page and get all the SPs and applicable UPDATES.
Another tip.......be sure that after you install Win xp pro..... to install your anti virus software before going on-line to get the Win xp pro updates .....

i think the cause is in the security settings in ur IE.

tools > internet options > advanced
scroll down to security
ensure SSL 2 and SSL 3 are both checked.

Alright I have a braodband ethernet fast connection, Any time I click on IE (version 5) it says stay connect or stay offline, never lets me go anywhere.  Well I went all around lan settings and network connections for hours, but found no solution, i checked in internet options for hours, no solution.  So I'm pissed and grab my old pentium II 348 out of the attic so I can get online. Okay. When I go to MSN.com I get an ugly white page with BLACK writing, and this message:

It will download the components, then it will start installing the components..then it stops and i get this message:  " setup was unable to install all the components. Please close all applications and try running setup again."
No matter when i try to install i always get this message.Even after closing all applications.

trish35.....What operating system are you using ? What updates where you attempting to D/L ?  Is this the first time you have been unable to D/L updates ?
Perhaps you have something else GOING on ........Do you regularly scan for Viruses , trojans and spyware ?

Its when i try to upgrade from microsoft internet explorer 5 to microsoft internet explorer 6.
Thats when i get the message, that it was unable to install all the components.trish35......Are you able to get any updates from MICRO Soft ?  Do you have any service packs installed ?

No, i dont think so.
trish35......Did you buy this pc used .......from someone else by any chance ........Because if you have never been able to get the M/S updates ...it's entirely possible that you do not have a legal copy of Win ME ....... What will happen is you go to the MS update site .......your system is scanned to see whats installed ........however if the product KEY has been blacklisted ......you will not be able to complete the download or the install ....... I only mention this as you said you have never been able to get the updates .

Hey guys, just need a hand here, my internet explorer, say i FIND a pic i want to save and i right click it well it only lets me save them as .BMP FILES. when you download something on INTERNET explorer where do the files go you downloaded?Where ever you tell them........save to disk...save to desktop/my doc etc.............you should find them by using using search..sometimes held in the c:\internet TEMP files folder or .......if in doubt get a download manager...to solve your PROBLEM in downloading stuff..I think that the default folder that files are SAVED to are My Documents...

Hello all,  I changed my font size on oy computer all is well when i use all programs and internet when i use Mozillia Fire fox however, when i access one of my other programs that relies on internet explorer the font is large and the color is all wrong.  IE:when i use explorer to access MSN or any other progam that relies on explorer  i can ADJUST the font size but all the colors are wrong?  I checked all internet explorer settings,  looked on line with no answer yet. I  thought if I ran a repair for windows fix , it would take care of the problem ...i did not....try using moz .......settings.....I tried your sugestion and it didn't make any difference.
It is the strangest thing  that only explorer is all SCREWED up

 As a MATTER of FACT when i go into explorer internet options/Accessibility/Formatting/and select 1)Ignore colors specified on web page 2)Ignore Font styles specified on web page 3) Ignore font sizes specified on web page..The page is now readable but the colors are not corrisponding to the colors of the MSN page. It seems that this is working backwards..  
Hello all, I just wanted to let you know that I have it fixed.

I had my IT guy look at it and he changed one setting and it is all back to normal now.

He did the following:

1) Click START | CONTROL PANEL | ACCESSIBILITY OPTIONS

2) DISPLAY tab, UNCHECK "Use High Contrast"

Apparently I must have set the system to High-Contrast mode somehow.  He thinks it was the shortcut KEYS I may have hit while typing that caused it.  So he disabled the shortcut key so it won't happen in the future.

I set IE to default levels, I'm using NORTON Internet Security and Microsoft Antispyware.

I tried the IE fix, but it wouldn't run - Run time error 429
Active X can't create object.

Since there was no Outlook Express section, I am POSTING the question here.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I tried to send a 200MB e-mail, which didn't work.  So I tried to delete the e-mail from OE's outbox but OE crashes every time I TRY to go back in to delete it.  I tried everything, including DISCONNECTING from the internet and deleting it every way I know how.   Still I failed.  Now I can't use my e-mail because outlook crashes everytime it tries to send/receive e-mail.  Can anyone help?  I thought of going through the Outlook Express Outbox .dbx file, but I am afraid to erase the 200MB file for fear of totally SCREWING up OE.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Make a copy of the .dbx file.
Then delete the original.
I believe OE will create a new .dbx file when you open it.
If not, put the copy (renamed of course) back where the original was.
Worst case, you are no worse off than you are now.

How do you delete entries in the Internet Explorer Properties Home Page? I only added yahoo to mine but my teenage children have done something and there are about 30 different home pages listed. Does anyone know how I can delete them?Jim Matthews....Exactly where are these items listed ?

Are you refering to the favourites list ?  If you are , simply click favourites ....then scroll down to the one you wish to remove ( delete) right click on it and select delete and presto its gone ......

dl65 No. When you right click and open the intenet explorer property BOX you are at the general tab. The first item is home page. I have over 30 listed there. ( Up at the top ) When you look at properties ......the only URL that will be on the General tab ...will be the site that you are currently on .

dl65  Ok let me try this again. I am running Windows XP. I have deleted all cookies and temporary internet files that were on the computer. If you will try what I have tried maybe you will see what I mean:

At the address bar at the top of this click on Tools then on Internet Options. It opens under the General Tab and the first thing showing there - Home Page is what I am talking about. If you will higlight what is there then back space to where all that is showing is http://www.

I have a listing of about 20 different web sites. How do you delete those and if you do then are all the web sites you visit there until you delete them again??
try windowwasher from webroot com...or delete them manually./?Do what I do and click "Use Blank."  That way, when IE opens, it's just a blank page.

Or you can click "Use Current" to use the current page as your homepage or "Use Default" to set it to MSN.com or something, whatever the default is.

If the WEBSITES keep coming back, you probably have some adware on your computer.  Go here to get rid of it: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

I can't seem to delete the history in my address bar. I've tried to delete them by using the Internet Options METHOD but it still leaves some webpages. I can clear the history and then when I click the drop box on the address bar it is empty. BUT when I am trying to type a web address in, once I type in the first letter it shows me web pages that are still in the history. Any ideas on how to clean it? Sorry if I'm unclear, its hard to explain. I've uploaded all the updates from Microsoft website and I realize that I cannot click on some LINKS with IE 6. My MOUSE changes from the arrow to that hand, I click on the link, but nothing happens. This happens only with certain links, and I do not now why. Any suggestions?What spyware/adware/virus programs are being used regularly? What version of Windows? WHat happened PRIOR to this?I have Windows XP Professional. I use Windows Defenfer and Notron ANTIVIRUS 2006. I tried to DISABLE both of these, but I still get the same problem. When I go on the internet (netscape or ie) none of the pictures show up that good as far as colors go and I have faint little blue squares all over the background of everything.  Solid colors are okay like on yahoo.com the red YAHOO in the center is okay but everything else is messed up.  Someone told me that maybe it was my monitor pixels, so I tried to change that but mine are stuck at 640x480 and won't let me change it.  I don't know whats going on but it is driving me crazy.  I got this computer for free and I am trying to get it running smoothly for my sister in school.  The computer it self is 6 years old and was previously networked together in an office.  When it was there the internet worked fine.  It has a Win98 operating system.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.I would like some more information about your system. Both internet explorer and MOZILLA won't open up google.com or aol.com on either of my compters (1 DESKTOP, 1 laptop, both on a home network). I have access to all other sites except for these. I just got a Dell notebook computer about a week ago, and yesterday, INTERNET Explorer would start to lock up when I clicked certain links.  Usually, it seemed LIKE links that would open in a new window would CAUSE this the most.  Just trying to find a site that wouldn't lock this computer up to look for help took many aggravating hours of time.  ANYBODY something that could help me?  I thought maybe it could be some sort of spyware, but I am unable to get to any site where I could download something to get find/get rid of it without IE locking up.first restart lappy in safe mode.........hld down the f8.....chose option s/m  then scan for bugs///check all firewall options.....or chose last good config......or download avant browser.......INSTEAD of ie6.......

My OS: Windows95/AOL4.0/MSIE5.0 - 16MB 120MHZ
14,400 bps/1GB.  I have 325 mb remaining.
My problem is:  I tried to access a website, and was directed to upgrade my browser.  I clicked on the upgrade link and it apparently d/loaded a file, becuz it took approx. 2hrs and ate up 5 mb harddrive. After the d/load I visited the website again, and got the same msg. to "ugrade my browser".  Now, where is the file which was apparently d/loaded previously?  Unfortunately I did not make a NOTE of the file name or where it was d/loaded to.  I "searched" for recently d/loaded file name Internet Explorer - but there were none showing as recent in 2005. So where did this "recent d/load" go to?
I need to regain my harddrive space.  Can I Uninstall

My pc is working very well even tho its a bit outdated - it still has some remaining life and quite a bit of harddrive. I WANT to continue using it till it gives up.  What I need to know is - can I uninstall MSIE from Add/Remove Programs and then re-install a fresh copy of IE 5.0?  If I can safely go ahead and uninstall it (is this POSSIBLE?) where would I get a fresh d/load from?
Any suggestions as how to Uninstall and then re-install would be appreciated.  Thanks for any and all help.

Just after i fixed IE this other WEIRD thing happened. I was in it, it terminated and DISAPPEARED. So i drag it out from program files and go into it and it says some features are gone. You know how at the bottom of the IE window there is usually some thing that tells you that the site is loading and shows privacy and security warnings, well that disappeared with it. I spose its not big disaster but i would like to get it back. Any ideas??? I need some help or advise... my mum has just hooked up to the net but for some reason her connection is really slow.. I did a bandwidth test and it came up as 5-7kbps when DOWNLOADING and when surfing it is 15-17kbps.. she has a 56K modem.. any ideas

dl65  Thanks for replying...Yes, i have scanned for VIRUS's and spyware and nothing was found . Its been going on for about 2 days (since i updated my WINDOWS messenger but id doubt that would cause it because its a proper official site), no security settings changed and it happens when i right click the link and choose open in a new window. Its very strange.Tom8765438.....Odd ....did you update msn messenger or windows messenger ?
I would be inclined to uninstall the updated messenger and see if that corrects the problem.....and if that doesnt do the trick......if you are sure your pc is clear of any viruses and spyware , USE the system restore feature and set it back to the day before you downloaded the update .

My cousin's COMPUTER was just reformated with Win XP and now whenever he connects(cable) to the Internet a timer comes up and gives him one minute to save all DOCUMENTS and then the computer restarts, this only happens when he is plugged into the internet.  He downloaded AVG from D/L.com before the format and now he cannot download it to see if there are any problems since the computer restarts.

He has the sasser virus/worm.  He needs to use his antivirus software to get rid of it and then patch XP so it won't happen again.

Apparently a program automatically downloaded itself onto my computer and added a FOLDER to my favorites.  It also created an option on the right click menu in internet explorer that I don't want (above properties).  I've managed to remove the program and delete the favorites folder, but I have no idea how to remove the option on the right click menu.  (It's only on the right click menu in internet explorer, not the computer)  I've ALREADY run spybot, window washer, and have looked through this SITE for a solution.  And as FAR as I know, the option is all that remains of the program.Which Operating System are you using? Is this Internet Explorer 6? Also, what is this "extra option"?

I've had a lot of problems with my system opening my internet explorer recently and I still don't know why. I've done a system restore and now whenever I open my internet explorer, I get the following error message:

Cannot find import; DLL may be missing, corrupt or wrong version. File "rtl70.bpl" error.

 But after answering Ok, everything seems to work OK. What is GOING on?   :-/

 I have tried uninstalling the program but it asks me to restart the computer to complete uninstallation. This *censored* Linux THING won't download in firefox or IE. My internet works fine and everything else downloads perfectly.
I have tried many downloading from different websites. In Firefox I get a message saying that the server is taking too long to respond, or on other websites a dialog box comes up saying that the file cannot be found (doesn't specify whick one) or i get something like error 550 i think. in IE it just gives the usual "page cannot be found" crap. i have a DSL connection through a US Robotics router.


Oh and i have Spyware Doctor, AVG Antivirus free, Norton Antivirus,Ad-Aware, and Zone Alarm firewall. I have tried disableing all those but that didn't helpAnd if you are having such big problems with DOS what are you going to do with Linux?
