Solve : Getting hisotry back??

Answer»

I always delete my computer history as I go along, but now I've deleted a WEBPAGE that I really need and I can't find the address anywhere. Is there any way of reaccessing history once you've deleted it? THANKS in advance! KatieWhat operating system is USED..k890...........Erm, not sure what you mean. Its just Internet Explorer 6, I don't know much else about it!You don't know what operating system you are using? Windows XP, ME, etc.? Do this... On your desktop, right-click on My Computer, and click on Properties. You will now see a BOX appear... Look at the top where it says System:  ... Tell us what is under system...

Solve : I get a box with a sqare, a cirlce, and a triangle?

Answer»

In my house we're calling it the confetti BOX. I don't know why I'm getting this. I used to be able to see everything on my pc and then one day(more than one user on the pc) I started getting the confetti box. I don't know what to do to change it.
I think it must be mostly moving pictures that I can't see?
Any help would be great! I'm pulling out my hair here.Have you scanned for viruses and SPYWARE? Have you installed any NEW hadrware/software to your system prior the this incident? What about any major changes? Which operating system are you using?

[glb]Flame[/glb]I'm using windows 2000 pro.
I am constantly scanning for viruses and spy ware.
I have not installed any new hardware/software prior to this incident(that I can remember) I've had this problem for months now.
The only other changes I can think is that an antivirus firewall and spy ware, popup  bundle provided by our internet provider.
But I think I was already having this problem before the bundle was installed. Right now the only thing still running is the antivirus.
I fixed the problem! I found out that I did not have Macromedia Flash Player installed. I thought I had installed it but there was a popup blocker(I think from my GOOGLE bar) that was stopping it. I had to go to a macromedia flash player website and go to the link that has a kill bit it it and downloaded the player from there.
THANKS so much for all your help!

How did my subject get all messed up? Did I really write that instead of square and circle? lolActually, I think your subject was too long, so it got "cut-off". Thanks for chatting with us, and happy computing!

Solve : won't let me chat?

Answer»

I click on the start chating button and it acts like it is going to work, but it says WAIT 3 minutes for applet to load if that doesn't work click here.  I have waited and clicked and it still won't open anything.  It gives me the little red x in the corner.  I only have dial up.  Is this the problem and is there any way I can fix it???What CHAT program are you using? You may have to reload it. Also consider the possibilty of a virus/trojan/worm etc (yes, even people on dialup can get them). Usually when programs can't run, they just fail. They don't generally tell you to wait 3 minutes and hope for the best.

Good luck.  Most JAVA chats do that, such as yahoo games in a POOL room. Do u have JAVA installed? www.sunmicrosystems.com if you dont.
Thank you for helping me.  I downloaded Java and that fixed the problem.  Thank you so much!!

No Spyware protection.  And I have a Cable modem with Charter as My ISP.  And I forgot to say in my original post that when i restart my computer the internet will work for another hour and a half, but will eventually just stop, and if i close and reopen it, it doesn't work.

Solve : EMAIL 4RM MICROSOFT?

Answer»

I have just received two e.mails from what is purportedly microsoft inc. With this message:-
Dear Sir/Madam,
We kindly ask you to install this update to your PC as SOON as possible.
In the libraries of OS Windows® critical errors have been found. This errors lead to destruction of the system files from your computer without an opportunity on restoration. The given service-pack fixes libraries and does not ALLOW various Trojan modules to penetrate into your computer.

Yours Faithfully,
Microsoft INC

I have ignored them. Is this the RIGHT thing to do?I answered this in your other post, but for the sake of clarity and making sure everyone knows.  Microsoft does not send emails like this.

Delete them.  It is always safer to delete any email your are unsure about.GOD BLESS YOU ACTUALLY, keep them... Do not open them though... It sounds carzy, but if you can forward the message(s) to Micrsoft, then they will be able to track these people down, and have them charged for it... Send it to the FBI even... These people NEED to be stopped... Simply deleting the messages helps for one day, but the next day you might get more... You should act against it...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Thanks...

Solve : School internet?

Answer»

does anyone know any ways to get around the schools web page blocking program. they have disables all the proxies. they are USING Web-Sence and it blocks the goodle image search. if anyone has and IDEAS could u please let me knowWell, TELLING you how to hack your school's system is not something I will do, but... Let me ask... What happens when you click on the Images link?

[glb]Flame[/glb]im not at school right now but if i remember correctly it says innapropriate search site or something. the only effective way to get around it is to ping sites in cmd.exe but it only works once in a while.I block all the systems in the plant through the registry.  I PRESET the proxy to 10.0.0.1:5555 then disallow changing the proxy then I block the access to the registry.Web-sence is pretty badass...we use it. Everyone gets around it using proxy websites though, no hacking necessary.joleen can u show me or tell me how to do that.'fraid not skater.  Based on your original post I wouldn't want to give up info that might allow you to get by the school lockout.  All the info is online though if you just Google it.i found a site to the info u provided with befor but it turns out they blocked access to the registry edit. soo i guess all i have to do is find a way around that.

heres the site i found ----> http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1288/You win one free internet for finding that link.  That's the exact hack I did here but it seems the school has also done what I did by blocking access to the registry. No school is actually going to let you access the registry, were you seriously thinking you would be able to without some serious work. You can try this trick, but you'll need an INCREDIBLE amount of fortitude, ask someone as an admin to log on when they log off unplug the network cable and then reboot the comp and sometimes you can possibly auto logon as the admin, but I wouldn't recomend this for obvious reasons.

Solve : ip address was changed and I can't change it back?

Answer»

When I used to go to my computer to do a search on Google, the address was 127.0.0.1 and the bottom right corner said internet.  I was searching the internet and my desktop.  I discovered, quite by accident, as I have no computer experience, that my husband was doing an awful LOT of browsing of porn SITES.  I didn't say anything for awhile but set the preferences was up on Google to find everything possible.  I came home one day and he told me that he had to erase the computer becasue it wasn't working.  I found a away around that and set up Google again.  The results were far less expansive.  Then, I noticed that instead of the address being 127.0.0.1 and browsing the internet, I noticed that he had changed the address to localhost4664.  This kept me going in circles in GOogle and I can't get rid of it.  I have replaced Google but need to change the address BACK.

Also, my husband is running some porn websites and I am wondering how I can get to his homepage.  He has it all indexed in Chinese or little boxes and I can't read the customer lists.  The inventory list nor the CREDIT card statements that he is using to finance this project.  Is there a list of extentions that are not on IE that will open odd files?

Thank you for your help.  I know it took a long time to explain, but I don't know all of the buzz words to make it simplier.

Lisa Kunz
[email protected] or
[email protected]

Oh, I also found an email to a programmer asking him to write a program that would mirror AdultFriendFinders but with younger women.  Is there a way to find out where that is on the computer?

Just so you know 127.0.0.1 = localhost.  They are the same it is the local loopback address for your computer.

As to the other things, unplug the computer and throw it away.

Quote

...As to the other things, unplug the computer and throw it away...

While you're at it, throw him away, too.  Or maybe you both should schedule an appointment with Dr. Phil.
localhost4664 is the same as 127.0.0.1 because if you had looked further down that list of numbers it would have looked a little something like this.....http://127.0.0.1:4664/&s=221665810&q=......which is mine....notice the 4664 after the 127.0.0.1. So your husband is the webmaster of a pornsite, I'm thinking, according to your post, and you want to be able to do what exactly, read a customer list in another language? If so download a character map for some other languages and you can copy and paste it into google actually and use their translation tool, but I don't see the good in that, besides the fact that you'll know some peoples names. Also this MIGHT not work, as you might just be looking at encrypted files, and would need the programs that he encrypted them with to unlock them. But I agree w/ the other replies to, see a therapist if this is a big problem for you.Lisa Kunz.....I really don't think that the solution to the issue will be found here . It sounds to me like you should be talking about the issue with your husband or as Computer_Commando suggests .......Dr. Phil
As far as his homepage ( his porn site) .....keep checking the history folder ......at some point he may forget to erase the contents and you may find it there .

Solve : Remember my MSN log-in?

Answer»

I have MSN Premium with IE 6, Service Pack 2 and a Windows XP SP2 OPERATING system. Even though I select the "Log Me in Automatically" option for my MSN Premium log-in, it only does so about half the time.  At least half the time, I still have to type in my e-mail address and password. How do I fix this?  Is it an IE6 problem or a WinXP issue?Funny thing! I have MSN Premium too! lol  That's besides the point... Back to the issue... I NEVER heard of MSN (BROWSER) asking you for your E-Mail address every day... I just have an icon that I click on, and it wants my password... Are you talking about MSN messenger?

[glb]Flame[/glb]I have MSN Premium and use MyMSN, a CUSTOMIZED page as my start page.  It includes a MS Passport .NET password log-in, that has an option to bypass.  I check that option; but often am still prompted for my username and password.  It's irritating.Ok... This seems like an Internet Setting issue... Do this... Open Internet Eplorer... Click on Tools -> Internet options. Next, click on privacy... Adjust the bar that shows your security level to Medium High... Click Apply and then Ok. Now TRY MSN and see what happens...

Solve : Can't see some graphics and images?

Answer»

When I go to yahoo.com, the YAHOO that is supposed to be displayed at the very TOP isn't showing.  Also, whatever ad is on the page for that day isn't showing either.  It's just white space.  I have java installed and it still doesn't work.  I have already deleted temporary internet files, my cookies, defragmented my computer and did a disk cleanup.  HELP!

Oh, and ANOTHER site did this too (the banner didn't show up)

It's not yahoo, it's our computer!  I know this because I have been on several different computers and yahoo shows up fine. I am desperate!!!!

I know someone can help!

I noticed that the ads or whatever that won't show in yahoo, well, they are FLASH..and I installed it, but still, NO SHOW!

GRRR! What operating system and web browser are you using ?

Have you changed any settings recently to your firewall if you have one ?

Or added a Windows Update Service Pack ?well, FIRST off, I'm using windows xp and ie
It's hard to say about the computer's settings because 4 people use it!  I have deleted my account and put it back on to try and get things working again and it doesn't work.

We have the service pack 2, but I don't think it has anything to do with it.  No, I haven't changed any settings to the firewall.

My step-dad refuses to click on the updates because he thinks a virus will get in.

A bigger PROBLEM developed tonight, my address bar is gone!  I have checked it to be on and all I see is Address in gray at the top.  Also, I did a spyware scan and several things named hijack and all popped up!!!!! Download and run http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html
That should be a quick & easy fix without having to go through the hijackthis routine.

Solve : How do I re-install Internet Explorer in Win 98??

Answer»

Help!

Someone please tell me how to install Internet explorer from my Win 98SE updates CD or other location- please!

Long story short, I deleted Internet explorer after reloading the Win98SE updates CD did not fix a problem and now I find that I do not have the ability to re-load Internet Explorer.

I'm running windows 98SE and began having a "Server not FOUND" error mesaage once I LOGGED onto the internet. I immediatley ran my up-to-date McAfee antivirus and Spybot spyware programs and they indicated no problem whatsoever.

I then re-loaded Win98SE Updates over the top of the old Win98 software. This did not fix the problem - still got the "server not found" message.

I then decided to delete Internet explorer from the computer by deleting the folder for it in windows.

I then re-loaded the win98SE updates software. But, Internet Explorer was not re-installed in the process!!!!

So, now I do not know how to get Internet Explorer back on my computer. Is it possible that this Windows 98se updates CD does not have Internet Explorer on it? I do not see it in a separate folder on the CD. I just assumed that it would be there as part of the Windows re-install MATERIAL on the CD.

Help please as I'm not a novice but I am STOPPED out completely at this point and do not kbnow where to turn. Thanks, in advance.
see if this command *>>          sfc      if typed in the run box BRINGS it back...........  or scanreg/fix  in the dos prompt.....If you don't have your original win98 disk you could probably download IE from Microsoft, if not then get it here http://tucows.comcen.com.au/preview/193778.html

Found the Microsoft one.

Solve : unable to access some web pages?

Answer»

I am having trouble accessing some websites i previously had no problems with, particularly ones that involve loging in, or have a message board i use.  I have a broadband /DSL cables CONNECTION, and have tried everything i can think of to solve the problem- reinstalling connection software, using firefox, running adaware and spybot, system restore, changing user accounts but nothign makes any difference.  when trying to get on these sites i either get a message saying the servers bandwidth has reached its limit (but on another computer is able to access it fine) or when trying to get on the message board its not been updated and won't LET me see any postings saying it is unable to open the .cat.  again this is fine on another computer.  most sites work fine.  any sugesstions welcomed!funnybunny,

I don't have the answer, just another question.  Did you recently convert to dsl?  I'm having the same problem.  After switching from dial-up to dsl, I no longer can access ebay, msn and several other websites.  I can't fin the solution, either.

RestonSince you switched, your public IP address has changed.  Try deleting all cookies and internet temporary files.  Under IE6--Tools--Internet Options.I have the same problem she does, and i DELETED my temp internet files and my cookies but it still didn't helpLisa,

Let me know if you find a solution.  I've been trying for several months.  SBC claims it's the computers, computer techs blame it on SBC...

Solve : Newbie help please!!?

Answer»

Hi all, for the last week i have had a very slow running IE and its driving me to despair now. Basically it tries to load the home page which is google and almost immediately shuts the computer down and very slowly loads. It never fails to actually load but takes too long. I have since downloaded Firefox and that works fine. I should also mention that when i log on to a non admin account the IE works at normal speed. After browsing this site i have downloaded hijackthis and have a scan report if anyone would like to view it. BTW I'm on XP home and IE6 and have norton 2005 installed as well as freeware version of ad aware and spybot.
Thanks in advance

Out of interest, did you run cwshredder?
Because I'm lazy here's a copy of a post to someone else that is applicable to you too.

Just to convince me you don't have any bugs, download, install, update & run 'ewido' & 'windows anti-spyware beta' programs. Both are easily searched & obtained.
In addition, do an online scan here http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/ and we'll see where that lands us.Fed, thanks for reply, no i havnt run it yet. I did wonder if the freeware version was what you meant and does it actually find and delete stuff? I'm fed up with getting so far and then they want MONEY to CLEAR the"problems" and buying over the net while ive got a possible attacker in my system is not on my list of things to do lol. If you (or others) feel the freeware one is ok to  use i'll give it a go.

Solve : Some Images won't show?

Answer»

I tried finding the answers on the main site, but couldn't come up with anything.  Some websites are fine.  But some, instead of allowing me to view, have empty outlines with a grey BOX in the upper-left hand CORNER with a triangle, circle and square in it, instead of the image that I am to click to get to where I want to be.  I use Microsoft windows 98 and use explorer 5.0  Can anyone help?  It would be much appreciated.  Thanks. It sounds to me like you need to UPGRADE your version of Internet Explorer.... It sounds to me like your is too old to view these new images...

[GLB]Flame[/glb]This is my exact problem! I'm running windows 2000.Tim McMullen  and siren ........Visit this site..........

[glb]Flame[/glb]Hey, I was trying to fix the problem on my computer and saw something that I think will help you out!  GO to tools-internet options-and click on the advanced tab...then go down until you see mulitimedia and check the box that says "show pictures"

Solve : Tweaking Firefox to death!?

Answer»

Ok I have to admit it! I know millions of people love Firefox, and I am learning to also, but when I first installed version 3.01, I was less than impressed with it's browsing speed, it's loading of pages and so on. I have added many tweaks to try to change some of that and they have made a DIFFERENCE. Still I am not completely satisfied with one area, the loading of pictures.

So I did some research and ended up following some tips from a website post called " Eva's Guide to speeding up Firefox" http://www.bulletsnbabesdvd.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=113997&sid=7cdced32d63ce2789c5ecd921929c410

Most of the tweaks seemed to MAKE sense, and I have so much to do right now that I cannot perform all of the tweaks recommended for settings in about:config. And I know you are familiar with the many sites that offer detailed instructions on changing quite a number of entries in there.

So for now I went about speeding up Firefox the lazy way, by using add-ons plus, just a few about:config tweaks.

Here's what I am currently running:
In add-ons I run AdBlock Plus, FastererFox (not FasterFox) and have it set to Turbo  Charged and Thrash. I also have Tweak Network and have the power settings enabled. I also installed TCP Optimzer and set it to Optimal.

I also made these changes in about:config:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to "100".
Right-click ANYWHERE and go New > Integer.
Enter "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set the value to "0".

After all of that, I noticed a significant increase in the overall browsing speed and I am fairly satisfied , at this point. The one area that "still bugs me" is the loading of pictures. It's not at all like Internet Explorer where, when a page is loading, the picture displays, are nice and smooth. In Firefox it's kind of choppy and clunky!

I know this is being a BIT picky, but I guess that I am still used to Internet Explorer, as I  have only been running Firefox full-time for about two weeks. Also, I don't imagine that I am the only one who has noticed this and even ask for tech help on the issue.

So the QUESTION now is, can the loading of pictures be improved and how do I go about it?

Your favorite perfectionist customer
Jan LaFataSet "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to "100".
Best setting that to 10... it wont actually request with 100HTTP streams, FireFox will actually only get a max of 7.

But, about things like FasterFox and FastererFox:
PREFETCHING = BAD BAD BAD!
REALLY BAD!
Not bad for you as a user, but bad for servers. Prefetching is the worlds biggest waste of bandwidth. If you install a utility like this that does prefetching of links, please, in favor of webmasters like me: DISABLE IT!
Its a huge waste of bandwidth, which can also result in others having a worse experience. If everyone was prefectching while at your site, imagine what those server loads would look like...

Solve : Automatic Country Conversion??

Answer»

Haven't tried this but it might work.

Go to the English Youtube and copy the URL.

Clear your Cookies.

Now open up your browser and PASTE the URL.
He tried that Carbon, even used the IP address to by-pass any hosts file or DNS re-directs.

Bish, do you have the 'use proxy server' box ticked in your browser settings, perhaps your ISP Proxy Server is doing it?
IE>Tools>Internet Options>Connections.

As a test did you TRY using a third party proxy server to get a different IP address?

I WOULD have thought that by using the US IP address would get you to the US site no matter what, someone is re-directing you but who?
Your own computer > your ISP, the CIA, the US site?

I'm in Oz and if I put in http://www.google.com (US) I get sent to http://www.google.com.au (AUST) but if I put in http://209.85.171.147/ (US) I go to the US website.

I know you're not concerned about Google but thought I'd add it to see if it would help throw some light on this problem.

Blast your ISP, tell them when you type www.blahblah.com that's where you want to go not www.blahblah.com.japan.
Belt your fist on the table. Simply out of curiosity...
Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc and open your hosts file in Notepad.  Can you copy/paste the contents here for us?

Whenever I go to a certain website, the internet closes.  It only does it on a few websites I go to.  What do I have to do to fix the problem? Thanks! What do you exactly MEAN by "internet closes"? The browser closes, or you lose connection?
What type of connection is it? What browser? What Windows version? You know how when you are done with the internet, and you click on the X on the top RIGHT to close it? Well, that is what it SEEMS like it's doing but it does it on it's own when I go to some websites.  I have dsl internet service.  I have Windows XP. Quote

And some websites that my husband goes to.It works for me on Firefox 3, Firefox 2 and IE6.

What Version of Internet Explorer do you have?I have Internet Explorer 6.Hmm, I was hoping to compare the sites and find similarities that I could use to narrow down the problem, but they're both quite different script-wise.  The only similarity I see is that these sites both use a fair amount of JavaScript.

So, for starters, make sure you have JavaScript enabled...
http://gsaauctions.gov/brow_details/IE6instr.htm

You should also make sure you have ActiveX enabled...
http://www.jayceooi.com/2007/05/25/how-to-enable-activex-in-internet-explorer-ie6-ie7/

And make sure you have the latest version of Flash Player (download without the extra toolbar)...
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

Go ahead and try these things and post back with your results.  Does it improve the situation at all?I'd also RECOMMEND, you try Firefox to see, if it presents same problem.

I haven't checked on IE6 but - two possibilities.  First - check to see if you have a zoom option BOTTOM right of status bar - tho this could just be on IE7, in FACT think it is.

Otherwise tho - go to ''view/text size" in your MENU and select larger. Also try holding CTRL on the Keyboard wile adjusting the mouse wheel (scroll)

Solve : Firefox will not load NBC Olympics videos?

Answer»

If this has been asked before, I'm sorry.  I looked but couldn't find a thread about it.

I use MOZILLA Firefox as my primary browser (I'm running MS XP sp2).  I like it much BETTER than IE and find that it runs just about everything faster and better.  The only problem I have encountered is that I can't get the NBC Olympics videos to load.  It just sits and sits and sits, saying it's loading but nothing ever happens.

IE will load the same videos in just a few seconds.

Videos on all others sites have played perfectly for me.

Any ideas?  Thanks.Link, please...some websites/videos/whatevers, do not support firefox... so this may be a possibility.. if it works on IE, i really dont see the big deal. but if you feel uncomfortable using IE, then i THINK posting a link would help alot. Quote

some websites/videos/whatevers, do not support firefox..

This is rubbish....
I've been using FireFox since it was new and Netscape prior to that and never encountered a page that would not load.
This may have been an issue some 10 years ago but not now... Quote
I've been using FireFox since it was new and Netscape prior to that and never encountered a page that would not load.
Ditto. From what I heard the NBC Olympic site was built on Silverlight technology from Microsoft. It's a plugin for IE. I am having trouble with these Vids as well,It is giving me the option to get this Silverlight plug-in,but uhh I have had firefox for all of 4 hours and do not know much about firefox yet.
Heres the link
http://www.nbcolympics.com/swimming/video/index.html

I clicked on the first Vid with Torres.tina1rules
Please, START a new topic.Just checked it and suprisingly in the fine print it's XP and Vista only...has nothing to do with Firefox as it lists all versions back to 1.5....

Will not load on my Win2K beast so this may be the issue.

Why they would do this is beyond logic...The videos don't play in Firefox on Linux either.  The video window says:

Quote
Video is currently supported on the following browsers:
  • Internet Explorer 6, 7 for Windows (Vista, XP SP2 or greater and 2003)
  • Firefox 1.5, 2, 3 for Windows (Vista, XP SP2 or greater and 2003)
  • Firefox 1.5, 2, 3 for Mac (OS10.4.8 or greater, Intel only)
  • Safari 2 & 3 for Mac (OS10.4.8 or greater, Intel only)

Of course, Microsoft is very prejudice against and fearful of Linux, so it makes sense that they would invent proprietary technology (Silverlight) to TRY to shut it out.  But the Moonlight will hopefully fill in the gap eventually. This is ridiculous...

Solve : Deleting Temporary Internet Files?

Answer»

Hi, I want to be ABLE to delete the TEMPORARY internet files everytime I close the browser and we have the "EMPTY temporary internet files folder when browser is closed" checked  in Internet Options. It does not work. Has anyone else run into this problem? I have tried this on a couple of machines and I am running IE 6. Thanks for any help you can give. How To Use: CCleaner /AUTO /SHUTDOWN

INSTALL and configure CCleaner correctly then use the Auto Shutdown.

Download CCleaner Slim and save it to your Desktop.
When the file has been saved, go to your Desktop and double-click on ccsetupxxx_slim.exe
Follow the prompts to install the program.
Complete the INSTALLATION then:

  • Double-click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
    • Under Cookies to Delete, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently
    • Click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to Keep window.
  • Go into Options > Advanced uncheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours
  • Click Cleaner on the left then Run Cleaner on the right to run the program.
  • Important: Make sure that ALL browser windows are closed before selecting Run Cleaner
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the 'Registry' feature unless you are very familiar with the registry.
  • Exit CCleaner after it has completed its process.
Thank you. Its a good tool and I plan to use it. Any chance of you knowing how to deploy and run it automatically in a 2500 machine network? We use Microsoft SMS here but not sure how we would run it automatically, we can install it with no problem. ThanksI'm sure that would be a question for the developers. http://forum.piriform.com/

Solve : Internet explorer 6 problem?

Answer»

Ok here goes. My father in law gave me a Hewlett Packard Pavilion a1000n desktop COMPUTER. The pc was originally set up to use a dial up connection. I have a broadband connection. When I try to access the internet via Internet Explorer by CLICKING on the icon the Internet Options DIALOG box pops up and I get no access to the internet. when I go to Control Panel and then to Netwok Connections it shows that my Local Area Connection and my 1394 Connection are both present and enabled. It also occasionally asks for a dial up username and password. How do I fix this? OPEN Internet Explorer.

Tools/Internet Options and then the Connections tab.

Select never dial a connection and save your settings.

Refresh the web page.

Solve : Help Old Info. in Browser ever since cleared history?

Answer»

I have Win XP was having problems with Yahoo and getting a white lingering page which would then finally load to Yahoo. Figured browser needed clearing, and did so. Now everytime I try to read news its OLD NEWS. Yahoo site says the wrong date but my CLOCK AND DATE are right. Daily News also is wrong in fact just about all info I am getting now is a day or two old. I tried hitting F5 but dont want to do that for every page I look at. Any suggestions? What browser? Did you try different one?I have Internet Explorer 7 which has always worked until a few days ago when I began getting a white screen which caused me to see if the browser history needed cleaning......i deleted the history and now CANNOT GET up to date info on the various sites. Any suggestions? I don't think I want to use ANOTHER browser.Try resetting Internet Explorer:

1.   Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
2.   On the Advanced tab, click RESET.
3.   In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset.
4.   When Internet Explorer 7 finishes restoring the default settings, click Close, and then click OK two times.
5.   Close Internet Explorer 7. The CHANGES take EFFECT the next time that you open Internet Explorer 7.

--------------------

Resetting Internet Explorer will reset the browser to default settings. Although the Reset Internet Explorer dialog claims that bookmarks/favorites should not be affected, everytime I tested, all favorited sites were deleted, so save all your favorite sites if they are important to you. Also, try Firefox as cross-reference. Quote from: Broni on August 18, 2008, 01:28:59 PM

Also, try Firefox as cross-reference.

Yes. If firefox is also having same problems given that you did not MODIFY any settings from default yet, then your computer has other problems not related to your browser.Seems to have done the trick reinstalling the IE browser and it did keep my faves although I mailed them to self just in case.Good news

Solve : How do I - Open a folder path in windows explorer from my web browser??

Answer»

How do I - Open a folder path in windows explorer from my web browser?

Hello there, just a little stuck here and I can't find the specifics on the site, or google search.

Ideally I'd like some html code to link the html page to the folder path by opening it in an instance of Window's Explorer, or any code else a browser can read (I'm using the latest Firefox final).

The problems I've come up with so far are;

trying to link the file-path opens it in the browser - I want it to open in explorer.
trying to link explorer returns a download query,
trying to link a batchfile makes the browser veiw its contents.

I'm sure you guys are bubbling with solutions!

Sounds about normal to me.  What exactly are you trying to accomplish here?  In other words...why do you want to do this?

If this is something you're trying to publish on the web, you're pretty much out of luck.Well, I think I specified enough information for the problem. But if it helps in come up with a solution faster then I'll tell ye. I want to make a website for use on a lan party. Just to make it easier to display information - announcements, tournament schedules etc.- for all the users to access, with a few links to folders on a server or host CONTAINING neccesary patches, updates and anti-virus software. The Lan is relatively small, though knowing this stuff will speed things up.
I MAINLY asked because we get a LOT of members trying to make web sites by linking to files hosted locally on their computers (instead of on a server), which just doesn't work.  Now, your SITUATION is a little different, but I'm still not entirely sure it'll work.  Of course, I haven't done a whole lot with LAN's.

I think this might actually fit better in the Networking section of our forum.  I would suggest asking your question there (be sure to link to this thread), or I could simply move this over to that section for you.

Solve : Dropdown Bar?

Answer»

So I have had a recent problem hooking up my Internet Exporer in my apartment. I was USING an unsecured wireless network temporarily ( 1day ) until my router was programmed.  I then logged on the next morning and something that I did not view was on my drop down bar and it was a direct link to a site.  I guess my question is, is that even possible or is the only thing on your personal internet something that someone had to type in themselves. I am wondering if someone else is on my computer or if the unsecured internet could possible do that. Please I need an answer!! I have tried to search it and can't find anything out. Thanks in advance  . Oh and btw the link was for realitykings for those of you who know what that is...It also showed up on the computers cookies so doesnt that mean it was on my computer. I am confused..I assume you refer to address bar drop down?  if it shows then it should show in history also.

If you didn't vist there then can't help but wonder if someone did ........ unless you followed a link without realising.  So FAR - bit wierd. What site was it?It's possible that your computer was accessed remotely, but I'm not sure how likely that is.  Do you have firewall software installed?  Also, search for the site in your History.  When you find it, take a look at all of the other sites that were visited that day.  Do any of them seem unfamiliar as well?  Does anyone else have access to your computer, like a friend or roommate?

Uhhh....I have been having internet connectivity problems and it didn't load the entire post...  Thanks everyone. Yea it was in my history or the cookies or whatever too..All the other sites and links were stuff that i viewed. I didnt know if it is because of the Unsecured wireless but yea i do have firewall... Umm and my fiance uses the computer so yea...Is it likely that he typed it in and is denying it. Because as far as I know if you didnt type it in it wont appear on your dropdown bar. Could it be a virus? Quote
Could it be a virus?

IMO very unlikely - not aware of any nasties that would do that.A virus is possible, but I also don't think that's the case because they typically don't ACT this way.  It sounds to me like your fiancé was just feeling a little frisky and doesn't want you to know.  Heh.  Or, to give him the benefit of the doubt, it could simply be SPAM from another site.  Perhaps a pop-up.  Although it's the most common way, a URL doesn't have to be typed in manually for it to show up in the drop-down list.

Of course, if it'll make you feel better, it wouldn't hurt to run a virus SCAN.Ok thanks...Yea I did a virus scan and nothing showed :/  I guess I will give him he benefit of the doubt and take his word and hope it was from the unsecured wireless network..I wish I knew more about computers haha. Thanks to all who replied

Solve : Retrieval of History?

My second attempt to send...I inadvertantly sent the post before I was completely finished...sorry.

Here goes again:

When I tried to open it up...it said that the file "Comdlg32.ocx" was MISSING.  I then read the instructions...which said the following:

2. System Requirements

NOTE: These are MINIMUM recommendations and should be taken as a guide ONLY.

   1. VB6 Runtime files (SP5)
   2. Windows 98 Second Edition
   3. Visual Basic 6 SP5 Runtime files

Some additional files are also required for this program and are LISTED below for those that
   use the no install option. These are;

   1. Comdlg32.ocx
   2. MSComctl.ocx
   3. Richtx32.ocx

These can be found either in the dependancy package on the programs download page, or at

   either of the following;

   http://downloads.mysteryfcm.co.uk/?f=Controls/Packages

   For information on installing these files, please see;

   http://support.it-mate.co.uk/?mode=KB&kbid=15

I then downloaded all of these from the RESPECTIVE sites to no avail.  I dunno what to do NEXT??!!  I tried restarting the laptop, then uninstalling and re-installing the program, but that didn't work either.

THANKS Broni,
Nikki  Quote

I then downloaded all of these from the respective sites to no avail.
...and what did you do with them?

1. Comdlg32.ocx
2. MSComctl.ocx
3. Richtx32.ocx
...files should be located in C:\Windows\System32 directory.
See, if you have them there. Make sure hidden, and system files view is enabled.Hey...will look into this and re-try...thanks so much!!

Solve : How can I boost my internet speed? Or I cant??

Answer»

I have a wireless on my laptop. I would like to know is there a possible way I can boost my internet faster? Is there a program out there that have it? Thank you for the HELP. thanksYes, you can boost your computer so that data will come to your laptop faster than it used to.

If you have a 768K dsl modem and you're trying to get your computer to go at 1mb SPEEDS, that is impossible, You can't make the maximum speed faster than what your internet PROVIDER gives you, but you can optimize your computer to help it go as fast as possible within the speed provided.

I used tuneup utilities. It's a nice program that does it's job but you gotta pay for it. There are other PROGRAMS you can look up as well.

Also, for wireless, I'd check to be sure there is as few things blocking the way of the signal to your laptop as possible. Go here: http://www.speedtest.net/
Post the results along with your connection type, Windows, and computer INFO.

I don't think it is possible because Firefox and IE are two very different browsers, and their way of saving Internet HISTORY isn't the same. This will not HAPPEN...

Solve : Can I forward email from my Yahoo account to MSN??

I am tired of Yahoo and would like to start a MSN account. It would be too complicated to drop/change my Yahoo email. Is there a way to forward mail to the other account? What if I were to reply to that email, which browser does it go through? I had a look at the Yahoo Mail Options for my Yahoo Account and it appears you can only forward emails from Yahoo to another Email Service if you have a Yahoo Premium account (pay for it). There is another way that might work....

If you sync Outlook/Windows Mail, etc, to retrieve your Yahoo! emails, can't you set it to forward your emails to Hotmail?

Just a suggestion.... Quote from: kpac on AUGUST 21, 2008, 03:57:57 AM

I just checked my very old Yahoo email account (my first email account ~7 years ago) and I can use the forwarding feature. So maybe if we get a time machine, and go back in time we can create a new account and have the forwarding feature.
