Solve : Travelling in Italy. Google and other things are in Italian!?

Answer»

I can't FIGURE out how to make everything English.
My computer is set up in the US, but I'm currently working in Italy.
When I open Firefox, I use GOOGLE as my homepage. It comes up in Italian. Also when I try to open Outlook in my company's VPN, I get a pop up warning in Italian, so I don't know what it says.

  Can you help?
  Thanks
  JimRegarding Google, see here

Post the VPN pop up here and I'll try to translate.
Google is coming up in Italian because it uses a GeoIP service to see where in the world you are, and then redirect you to that country's page. Quote from: Dias de verano on February 28, 2009, 03:12:10 AM

No NEED to translate.  The answer was clearly STATED on your link:

How can I get back to the Google homepage in English?
You can access the standard Google homepage by clicking on the "Google in English" link from any of our foreign language homepages. If this does not work, your browser is probably not configured to accept cookies.

He mentioned 2 problems. Read his post again.

(1) Google coming up in Italian, which, as you say, is addressed by the page I linked to.

(2)

The latter was what I was offering to translate, but since he posted last Saturday and hasn't been back, I guess he sorted it out.

Solve : Google Adsense Ads Not Showing with I.E.?

Answer»

Just recently, my Google Adsense Ads are not showing with Internet Explore specifically the 300x250 ads.  I updated to the latest version and they showed for a couple of days then disappeared again.  With Firefox, all is fine.  This causes a problem because most of my ads are 300x250.  Does anyone know what is causing this and how it can be fixed? Can you give us a screenshot?I'll give you a couple of pages:

http://www.bestsellersworld.com/reviews/dickinson-the_mighty_queens_of_freeville.htm

http://www.bestsellersworld.com/reviews/todd-a_matter_of_justice.htm

http://www.bestsellersworld.com/reviews/alexander-a_fatal_waltz.htm

The AD should appear in the white space to the left.  Once in a great while it does show but not most of the time. Why do you want those ads anyways?

Try clearing your browser's CACHE.I used the ads to try and make a few extra dollars.  I deleted the history - is that what you mean?  If not tell me how to clear the cache please.  Deleting the history did not help. Quote from: nan651 on February 24, 2009, 05:50:57 AM

I used the ads to try and make a few extra dollars.
Wait, how?If people read the review and click on the ad next to it, it helps a little to pay for website expenses.First, to be HONEST, I don't think anyone really clicks on the ads.

Second, it works here, so I'm sure everyone else can see it.

Not sure why you're IE isn't seeing it though....If you can see it with Internet Explorer that is good.  However, I asked some other people to check and they SAID they cannot see it.  So whatever the problem is I don't know.  I will have to wait and see.  Maybe it will go away.  Thanks.i didn't try with I.E. but firefox showed the ad you were talking about.

did you try with another browser to see if the same thing happening again. Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on February 24, 2009, 06:51:14 AM
First, to be honest, I don't think anyone really clicks on the ads.

Not true at all. And I know from experience.

Go to START > Internet Explorer (no addons).

Solve : IE 5.1 image search... weirdness?

Answer»

Afternoon, all. Firstly–don't all laugh at once–I'm on a Mac here, so this might be a BIT of a curve ball. The problem is when I search for any image I get the usual page of thumbnails, but clicking on any thumbnail LEADS to most of the window being occupied by a pale blue band with the thumbnail in the bottom LEFT and a helpful 'Remove Frame X' in the bottom right. The vertical scrollbar disappears and the actual page the thumbnail leads to can be SEEN peering in at the bottom of the window. At first, the large blue band only occupied about 30mm at the top but now clearly has visions of global domination. Any help would prevent me resorting to dusting off the old ZX SPECTRUM and going live with a browser I made out of a Croatian kettle, a duck-powered video recorder and gaffer tape. Cheers!     mike

Solve : Firefox is slow......... Konquerer instead??

Answer»

Hi all,

I just timed my computer shutting down FireFox with three tabs open. It took ten minutes.

I take it this should not happen?

Anyway, my computer is a Fujitsu Lifebook S6120, 1.2Ghz proc, 256 mb RAM and a 4.3gb hard drive. I have xunbuntu installed.

Ever since I installed this, it has never been nearly as fast as the previous INSTALL of Windows 2000 (the hard drive, unfortunately, crashed, and I did not have restore cds), and yet, xunbuntu is supposed to be one of the smallest distros of Linux out there.

Is this the same old memory HOG PROBLEM FF has been battling for YEARS?

Would Konquerer work better? I have the same problem with OpenOffice, but the native Gnumeric Spreadsheets and AbiWord processor work no sweat. Would Konquerer be the same deal?

Thanks!

(P.S. As you can probably tell from my terminology, I'm no Linux genius, but I do KNOW a few basic commands)

(P.S. I posted this in this category because I thought it might be more suited to a browser expert.... please move it if you think otherwise)Not to bump, but I've noticed Flash does it a lot. Big clunky sites like eBay slow it down tremendously as well.

Anyone? Why not try Portable Firefox? It says you can run it with Wine under Linux.

Solve : Stuck in a window?

Answer»

Hi there,

I suppose this is a good place to be when you run into a problem.  I was visiting a site that a person had listed in a post. It was in the introductory post AREA.  The site was at deerdance.110mb.com.  When I got there, I clicked on another link that I can't get out of.  Fortunately, I was able to open up my EXPLORER and ask for some help this way.

The link opened to this guy (sorry but I don't remember what his name is) singing a song.  When I went to close it by clicking on the red X in the window at the top (it's on a Firefox MOZILLA browser) the window opened up that says "The PAGE at Link Removed says:" and then the lyrics of the song appear below.  Now I can't seem to get out of it.  It's been running like that for several hours now.  Help, please.

Solve : Unable to Open any Browsers and Access the Net?

Answer»

Hi, about a week ago I had a strange thing happen to me.  After coming home one day and turning on my PC, I was unable to access anything on the internet through my web browsers.  I can still play games like World of WARCRAFT, Left 4 Dead, and I can communicate to people through the valve Steam client (It has instant messanging FEATURES), and I can receive game updates, but my browsers do not work, I cannot open iTunes, and I can't get on any instant messanger programs.  IN short: Only my games can access the net.  This is the error message that my IE gives me when I run the diagnostic.  Upon a restart as it recommends, it does not fix the problem.

Desktop, Windows XP, running McAfee anti virus with the firewall turned OFF, windows firewall OFF, wired connection to a router downstairs.Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
Power them BACK on.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK.

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK.

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

Solve : Browsers will not open certain websites?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a small issue with a PC that refuses to open 2 websites (sorry I can't disclose them). Basically it's like opening youtube from home, and not being able to do that on this PC with the issue.

the weird part is that this SITE used to work on that pc, however now it does not . To try to diagnose the issue, I tried installing firefox on that PC, sadly it started working but not for long (as it was reported to me). Computers on the SAME network are able to get on this website, so I dont think it's a network issue. I also am 100% sure the site is not down because other people are on it at the same time (or around the same time) as when I am trying to log on to this website.

pinging the website in question returns packets so I really dont know what to do.

On that PC there are no firewalls (just the network firewall) and it is using AVG antivirus

PC specs:

Vista permium
2GB ram
Duo core (at 1.8Ghz)
500GB HDD
IE7 (not working)
FF3 (not working)

Thanks in advance for everyone's suggestions See, if you can access those sites in Safe Mode with Networkingi have the exact same problem! everything works in safemode w/ networking, but i want it to work normally.. someone help us!WELL... I once had an issue with a modem that hadn't been reset for SEVERAL YEARS and it started to refuse to handle requests for certain pages... Resetting it TURNED out to fix that.

Please, start your own topic.Sometimes clearing the browser's cache and getting rid of files in the Temporary Internet folders works for me when I can't get a site to open or it's incredibly slow. Just clear everything, reboot and see if that helps at all.

Solve : IE 7 doesn't work?

Answer»

I am running W/XP Home SP2. I am having problems getting IE7 to work. My problem started with IE6 so I upgraded to IE7 and still am having problems.

When I start IE7 the URL goes to "res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\xpsp3res.dll/dnserror.htm#http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=74005" and the output window says "The page cannot be displayed". My home page is currently set to about:blank. When I try so SELECT TOOLS -> Internet Options, I GET a window titled "Restrictions" with the text "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."

I also have Firefox and Flock on this computer and they both work FINE. I really need to get IE working though. Any Ideas? Thanks in advance. Are you the administrator?
Have you installed anything else recently?Yes, I am the administrator.

I have had this problem for over 6 months, many things have been added/deleted from this computer during this time. I don't think I can attribute this problem to anything that has been recently done.Download HijackThis:

Steps to resolve the problem
To resolve this problem, follow these steps.
Step 1: Open a blank page in Internet Explorer 7
Test Internet Explorer 7 by opening a blank page. To do this, follow these steps:
1.   Click Start, click Run, type iexplore about:blank in the Open box, and then click OK.
2.   If Internet Explorer does not start, go to "Step 3: Start Internet Explorer 7 in 'No Add-ons' mode." If Internet Explorer starts correctly, follow these steps to use a blank page as your home page:
a.    On the toolbar, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
b.    On the General tab, note the address that is listed in the Home page area. This address may cause the problem.
c.    Click Use Blank, and then click OK.
d.    Close Internet Explorer. Then, start Internet Explorer again.

Step 2: Remove temporary Internet files, browsing history data, and Web form data
To remove temporary Internet files, browsing history data, and Web form data, follow these steps:
1.   Start Internet Explorer.
2.   On the toolbar, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.

Step 3: Start Internet Explorer 7 in "No Add-ons" mode
To start Internet Explorer 7 in "No Add-ons" mode, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

If the problem does not occur after you use this method, use Manage Add-ons to determine which add-ons are causing the problem. To do this, follow these steps:
1.   Click Tools on the Internet Explorer toolbar, point to Manage Add-ons, and then click Enable or Disable Add-ons.
2.   Click the name of the add-on at the top of the Enabled list, and then click Disable in the Settings area.
3.   Click OK, and then test Internet Explorer.
4.   If the problem still occurs, open Manage Add-ons, enable the add-on that you DISABLED in step 2, and then repeat steps 1 to 3 for the next add-on in the Enabled list.
5.   Repeat steps 1 to 3 until the problem is resolved or until all the add-ons have been tested.
Step 4: Use another user name to log on to Windows
Using a different user name and password to log on to Windows can help determine whether this problem occurs only when you use a particular user account. After you log on, test Internet Explorer to see whether the problem still occurs.
Step 5: Reset Internet Explorer settings
To reset Internet Explorer settings, follow these steps:
1.   Start Internet Explorer.
2.   Click Tools on the toolbar, and then click Internet Options.
3.   On the Advanced tab, click Reset, and then click OK.
4.   Test Internet Explorer to determine whether the problem is resolved.

To All,

Thanks for your help and suggestions. I ran 4-5 different Spyware programs on my computer. It seems each one of them found something different. I then reinstalled IE7. Now it works.

ThanksGood news

Solve : Internet, pretty slow but know can go faster.?

Answer»

Ok i have DSL that is rated to be about 512Kbps but seems much slower than what it normaly is(the average is like 300 something Kbps, and thats on IE's download popup)

I went to Speedtest.net and here's the results along with my Windows version and hardware info.
http://www.speedtest.net/result/374103313.png

Windows 2000

Dell OptiPlex GX150
Maxtor 20GB IDE HD
384MB DDR1 SDRAM PC133
8MB ATI Rage XL w/ 3D-Accel

I've already tried some internet optimizers(Acentive and a COUPLE others) but they require me to pay to optimize it, is there a free one(not the one that say "Free" but only mean free scan) And what confuses me is that Speed Test's download/upload speed is faster than what IE shows on the download popup.

Thanks in advance
,NickI'm not sure, if I understand your problem.
The speed test shows 4Mb/s, so what's the complain?
What's your ISP ADVERTISED speed?it says 512kbps. but i THINK its that the physicall LOCATION of the server will decrease the speed if its over long distances. Do you think that could be the case?I think, you're simply confused....

Your BROWSER reports speeds in KB/s (1 KB/s = 8.192 kbps), so if you see 500KB in your browser your speed is 4096kbps or 4.096Mbps.

The speed tests report speeds in kbps, so if you see 5000kbps, that's equivalent to 610.5KB/s in your browser.

that helped answer alot of questions

How do I get rid of this STARTUP and go straight to my home page (a file on my local machine).

"Beta" and "security" are mutually exclusive. You MIGHT get a HiJack This fix on it.

Run HiJack this and get see what it gets as your homepage and you can fix it back to the default microsoft page for which you can change back to whatever you like as normal.

-- I have had my homepage hijacked once, PROBABLY by some program I installed but doing this steps did fix the problem and allowed me to get my yahoo homepage back as I wanted it. (I use firefox more often, but I play with IE now and then)However Gilh, if you don't know what HijackThis is or how to use it, don't use it.

Using HijackThis without knowing what you're going is VERY dangerous.Well, if you're novice to HiJack This, run it and have program make log and post here for somebody to guide you through the technical aspects of it.

I'd like for it to go back to the Firefox 2 way but I can't seem to find any option that says "Please don't BOTHER me with innovation, go back to what you were". They must have named it something else...

WELL, thanks in advance! Not sure, but this may be of some use:

Solve : Slow website access to only one site on IE7 - Okay with Firefox??

Answer»

I recently began having problems accessing www.ups.com using Internet Explorer 7.0 - It will load but is VERY slow.

I use UPS to print shipping labels and have never had any problem until recently.

It loads quickly with Firefox, and through my AOL browser.  I can also access it with no problems using other computers with IE7.

I tried printing labels using Firefox but get an Active-X ERROR message and it won't install the plug-in that UPS is needed and provides, so I've resorted to using AOL, but would prefer not to if I don't have to.

I didn't make any system changes that I'm aware of, and tried deleting cookies and even tried system ROLLBACK to when it was working fine to no avail.

Can anyone offer any suggestions regarding what the problem may be?

THANKS!Close IE.
Go Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, and click on Internet Explorer (no add-ons). Same thing?I just renewed my firewall/anti-virus subscription which was running out in a week, and after it UPDATED the site loaded just fine.

The alerts that my subscription was running out soon probably started around the same time I started having the problem, so I'm assuming it was tied to that somehow but I don't know why?

Thank you for the quick repsonse though - I will try your suggestion if it happens again.Hmm...I'd be curious to know what security program it is. If that was a culprit, I'd run away from any program like that.Just thought you'd like to know......I started having problems with one site, www.ups.com,  about the middle of October also.  Nothing had been changed on my PC.  I'm using XP and IE7.  It takes 25 seconds for me to go from page to page.  I've had two - 2 hour tech support calls with the UPS tech support team - level one and level 2 to no avail.  Level 3 called me to SAY that there are several people that reported the problem and that they're "working on it".  I feel like my life is passing me by waiting for the pages to load.  I guess I'll start using Firefox just for UPS tracking (I get a lot of packages).  I'll keep you posted.

Solve : Msn mail problem?

Answer»

All of the email saved to my computer have disappeared.  My mail SERVER is MSN and OS is Vista.  This occured after installing Network Magic 5.0 upgrade.  (I think)  I suspect the email is there, it is just a problem with ACCESSING it.  Please help!  MSN Live support has not been very helpful! You're going to have to define 'Saved to'. IE: What E-mail client were you using and why would Network Magic be part of the problem? Thanks very much for responding.  I will try to explain.

In MSN Live mail there are folders to store email messages.  These are listed to the left of the main in box screen.  There are a group of folders which are stored on "My Computer" which only I can access from the computer on which they were stored.  There is another group of folders that I can access from any computer after logging in to my email account.  The email messages in QUESTION are from the folder located on my computer.

After addressing the problem with an MSN technical representative via live chat, and with another tech rep via phone, I was informed that the lost messages are unrecoverable.  I'm out of luck, I think.  According to my theory, (which doesn't mean much, I'll admit) the messages should still be there.  It is the access that is corrupted.

There are many people having similar problems.  I base this on the number of posts on the MSN Live forum.  I think MSN screwed up.  Regretably, I don't know enough to fix it.

How you can put up with Live mail is beyond me, the endless spam and interface changes + the insane amount of cookies you have to accept make me shiver each time I log in ... Which is once a year or so.

Before we continue;

I'd very much recommend an alternative E-mail service such as GMX.com or Gmail.com.
As an E-mail client I'd use either Outlook Express or Thunderbird. Preferably the latter as it comes with a built-in spam filter.
You can most likely auto-forward all your E-mail from your live account if Microsoft was kind enough to provide you with that option.

Onto the subject of your lost mail;

Can you tell me how I can set up Windows Live Hotmail (Assuming it is the same as MSN Live Mail) to store messages on my computer? That way I can see in what kind of format they're stored and where. I need you to explain a little more what you would like me to do. Quote from: solarsarah on December 17, 2008, 03:23:15 PM

I need you to explain a little more what you would like me to do.

The function you named doesn't seem to be standard (Either that or I can't find it). Can you tell me how to configure Windows Live Mail so that I can discover his this function works?

Don't delete your recent Internet activity, by the way otherwise you'll probably never be able to retrieve your E-mail. I have uninstalled and reinstalled MSN.  I heard of a security breach with IE and have started using Firefox.  So the most recent internet activity is toast. So this feature you speak of wasn't  browser based but came with that program-bundle released by Microsoft?

Ah, well, uh in that case if you removed the program and reinstalled it, it's probably really gone...

Glad to read you're using Firefox, though. WELCOME to the club! I really like it a lot!  This thing with missing emails really blows!  I have a short term memory disorder, due to encephalitis.  I use tricks to help me function.  Being able to reference my old emails was one of them.  When I was on the phone with Verizon tech support, I was told to keep my stored emails in the folder that is accessible from any computer that I log into.  From what I am reading in forums, people lost those emails too!  I think that the way this is being handled sucks!  They (MSN) are claiming that it is user error.  (the losing of emails)  There are too many people that this is happening to for it to be everyone's fault but MSN.   Well, you can always consider switching to a better E-mail service like GMX.com or Gmail.com and a more 'robust' E-mail client such as Mozilla Thunderbird or Outlook Express. The latter comes standard with Windows XP.

Of course, if you have memory related problems LEARNING a new system might be very problematic. Here are some links that might get you started if you're willing to try;

The error occurs during random times of internet use.You can uninstall IE7 (if you have SP3, you must uninstall it FIRST), but before you go there...

Close IE.

I gave up and am now using Mozilla Firefox, which has yet to cause me any problems. Thanks for your help.Good move if you still want IE, you can reset it. Solve : My IE7 stops responding in Zone Alarm Force Field "Open Private Browser"?

Answer»

Hi,

I am finding that when I open IE7 by right clicking "open private BROWSER" in Zone ALARM FORCE Field (purchased in October 08) after a bit the browser just freezes and ceases to respond in Windows Vista Home BASIC 32 bit. IE does open (often very slowly). I can then open an internet banking site OK. Then the bank's menu options seem to be too hard for the system and it stops responding at the next step or the one after.

On the other hand, if I open IE directly from iexplore.exe WITHOUT using ZAFF open private browser, I do not have this slowness or freezing.

If I can't get this resolved then my principal reason for purchasing ZAFF, which was to make my internet banking safe, has not been satisfied.

Any help would be appreciated.

Solve : Fast internet but slow load rate?

Answer»

Hello!

Since I'm new to forums, please dint just go AHEAD and bash me.

Okay here is the situation:

A few days ago, i have started to experience a REALLY slow loading in my Mozilla Firefox browser and it was even worse in IE. I have a 1MB/1MB connection (optical) and i never had such problems before. Its loading SO slow that i cant even watch a youtube video and i have to wait like 30 seconds for the forum to load all the images and stuff, not to mention loading a 1024*756 wallpaper or bigger.

First thing i did was that i cleared all the temporally files (temp folder checked form other accounts as well). - no use
Then i reinstalled my Mozilla browser - no use
I have tryed some tricks to speed up the browser speed (some at youtube) - no use
Then i went to safe mode, and scanned computer with: Spybot S&D, ClamWin, Avira AntiVir Personal and Sophos (which i am paying for). No results of viruses except for some tracking cookies (with Spybot). - no use

I am really running out of ideas and I'd really appreciate if anyone could help me.

There is one suspicious thingy on my Internet ussage tracker:

*Note: This has ben shooted while i was doing nothing on the internet (closed everything that uses connection to the internet).

Might help the info, that i don't have any problems with uploading and that i am not using any P2P software.
I am also using the last version of mozilla and Service pack 3 for Windows XP (original).

The thingy is that Avira and ClamWin are not treated like other (more serious) like NOD or Sophos, wich cant be run at the same time. For those two (clamwin and avira), there is no restrictions and you can use them at any time along with others. But if you say so, there is no probs to remove them. I had only Sophos b4 and when this problem started, i searched around abit and i got those two (Spybot insnt an antivirus).Just a note, running multiple antivirus programs at the same time causes problems, false positives and can create a real mess.Yes, i do know that, but those were told that they can run at the same time. No probs, ill remove to SEE, if its any better. You're correct in case of ClamWin. It doesn't run in real-time, but it's not true with Avira.
You may keep ClamWin, but you have to uninstall either Avira, or Sophos. Quote from: Broni on December 10, 2008, 05:14:32 PM

- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows key, hit Pause/Break key)

Not in real time.
ClamWin doesn't give you real time protection. You have to start the scan manually. What is real time Broni?

I have run IObot Malware, Avast, Spybot and Q.C. but all tell me I am clean. Any thoughts please? When I use the Search on Firebox, which is powered by Google, it works but I cannot OPEN the Google site even from Firebox.Try http://www.google.com/ncr

Clearing your DNS cache might help too:

Alternatively you can right-click on your internet connection and select "Repair."Thanks. Tried the link. No connection. Computer checked the connection..OK

Cleared the Cache. Cleared OK.  No difference. Rebooted the Router...No difference.

What is Google Public DNS?
Google Public DNS is a free, GLOBAL Domain Name System (DNS) resolution service, that you can use as an alternative to your current DNS provider.
To try it out:
Configure your network settings to use the IP addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as your DNS servers or
    Read our configuration instructions.
New! For IPv6 addresses, see our configuration instructions.
If you decide to try Google Public DNS, your client programs will PERFORM all DNS lookups using Google Public DNS.
Why does DNS matter?
The DNS protocol is an important part of the WEB's infrastructure, serving as the Internet's phone book: every time you visit a website, your computer PERFORMS a DNS lookup. Complex pages often require multiple DNS lookups before they start loading, so your computer may be performing hundreds of lookups a day.
Have you tried accessing the domain from within google language tools?

I am trying to save the back-up on a 16 Gig USB drive and have created a FOLDER on the drive for it. Simply called "Febe Bookmarks Backup".

I have told Febe to send the DATA (save it to) the E: drive in that folder.

However when I run the application, the box comes up and the OPERATIONS bar keeps traveling across the length of the box continually but has taken forever and does not complete.

I would have thought it would be quite a simple and quick operation to do this backup, but my attempts seem to hang and never complete. There is more than 75% space available on the USB.

Can someone please advise as to what it is that I might have done, that is incorrect and let me know how to complete this task.

Solve : Opera browser insists I live in Poland!!!?

Answer»

I recently installed the Opera browser but it keeps insisting that I live in POLAND instead of the UK!!

If I go (for instance) to avast.com it takes me to the polish version.  Now when I try to log into one of my webserver accounts the server locks me out because it thinks the account is being hacked from someone in Poland (I set up the webserver account using IE8).

I checked the Geolocation setting and it was OFF.  Switching it ON makes no difference.

Does anyone have any IDEAS as this is driving me insane!!Hi.  I'm an Opera user in the US but I don't know the solution right off hand.  Hopefully, someone will be able to suggest a solution here but, while you're waiting, you might post your question in an Opera-specific forum at http://my.opera.com/community/forums/.  I've used that forum and I've generally found it helpful regarding Opera. I am an Opera user in Canada with no issues. Are you using the full version of Opera or Opera Mini? Because apparently the "Mini" version is known to be glitchy. It is primarily used for small portable devices such as I-phones etc. If it were me i would uninstall it and do a new install. The latest version is 11.51 which just came out in the past few days.truenorthHave you checked if any proxy servers are enabled in Tools>Advanced Tab>Network? Do you know or live with any Polish people? Or have any connection with that country? Is this a portable computer? Have you ever taken it to Poland? Is that where you installed Opera? Where did you get Opera from?

This is Opera version 11.51.  It is installed on a laptop in the UK.  There are no proxy servers listed and we connect to the Internet using Virgin Media cable within the UK.  IE8 automatically converts Google. com to Google.co.uk. The only connection I have with Poland is that my wife's father was Polish but she was born in Coventry LOL!  So no it has never been to Poland or been installed by anybody Polish.  Quote from: Salmon Trout on September 03, 2011, 05:57:17 PM

Where did you get Opera from?

... and is it a full installed version or a portable one?

... and if it is an installed version, have you tried uninstalling it, removing all traces INCLUDING program folder and appdata etc and then reinstalling it?

... why not just ditch it and use Firefox, like I did? (Yes I know this is a controversial suggestion!)

It's a fully installed version not a portable.  I guess I can go for the uninstall / reinstall option.  I wanted Opera because it runs my POP3 email simultaneously instead of opening Outlook.  I actually didn't like Firefox.  Also Opera Unite enables me to access my files as a web server remotely instead of using Logmein.Go for the uninstall/install and report back, truenorth Quote from: Salmon Trout on September 03, 2011, 05:57:17 PM
Where did you get Opera from?
Still not answered.

Before you reinstall, I suggest you download Opera again.  It's AVAILABLE from the makers of Opera at http://www.opera.com/download/ Quote from: truenorth on September 04, 2011, 06:22:55 AM
Go for the uninstall/install and report back, truenorth

Actually, here's what I'd do.
> Uninstall Opera
> Install CCleaner and run both its file cleaner AND its Registry cleaner.  When run the Registry cleaner, if you prefer not to let CCleaner remove all items it found, at least let it remove anything that appears to be RELATED to Opera.  If it were me, I'd let CCleaner remove all items found.
> Then, reinstall that newly downloaded Opera

Note: other forum members may chime in here with their standard advisory against using any registry cleaner, ever.  CCleaner is very safe; it will not harm your computer and sometimes its registry cleaner can help resolve software problems such as your problem with Opera. I'll chime in by saying Soybean's advice is solid...

Solve : Cannot reach website on my computer but wife can on her PC?

I have Windows Vista; my wife has Windows XP.. For two days I was able to go to gapfire.com on my PC with no problem.  Now I am unable.  My wife's computer takes me to gapfire.com so I know there's NOTHING wrong with their website.  I have tried using firefox, google chrome and IE on my computer to reach the site with no luck at all.  Any help would be most appreciated.Take a look at your hosts file and see whether it contains a line for gapfire.com.  Here's a reference which may help you locate the hosts file if you're not familiar with it: http://www.windowsreference.com/windows-7/edit-hosts-file-in-windows-7-windows-vista/Thanks for your quick reply but in truth I did not understand the information when I went to the link. Here is an alternative way to get around this problem. The assumption is somebody or SOMETHING has blocked the site inn your PC. You can circumvent this, in many cases, by using a proxy server. A proxy server is a kind of relay where you give them the  link you want, they get it and send the content to you as if it came from their site.
One LIST:

A list in UK:

If you can reach the site via proxy, that is a sure sign your computer has some kind of blocker installed. Somebody does not want you to see that site.

Here is one the is everybody may use:

Are there messages or details when the site is not able to load? Try pinging the site on cmd prompt.
1.Hit Start and then Run, Enter.
2.Type cmd, Enter.
3.Type ping gapfire.com then Enter.

If the results show a series of replies, the connection is working. The time shows you how fast the connection is. I still think you should open your hosts file and examine it since it can be USED to block access to websites.  Another reference: http://maximumpcguides.com/windows-vista/edit-the-windows-vista-hosts-file/.  If a website is being blocked by the hosts file, it would block access regardless of what browser is being used, so this aspect of the hosts file directly relates to the problematic behavior you've encountered.

Solve : Help? Both IE & Chrome won't work?

Answer»
Hi all!  I made a huge bad mistake!  I was trying to get rid of new toolbars I accidently downloaded.

I got into the extensions and disabled and deleted several items.

Now both my IE & Chrome won't go to certain pages (seems like sql data pages) that I want.

My QUESTION:  I have Windows 7.  Will a System Restore go back an fix this?

Or just give me ANY advice of how to end this problem!

I love all your help when I need it!

Pennie77 Yes a restore to a date earlier than your changes would achieve your objective. However have you actually ever created a restore point? Something else to bear in mind as well as the changes you made that you believe caused your current issue you will also lose any other changes SINCE the restore point date (ones you may NOT wish to lose) will be gone. Another option is to uninstall the 2 altered browsers and reinstall them. Do so from add remove programs in the case of Chrome. In the case of IE you cannot totally remove it. You will go back to the last previous version (which you can then upgrade to the edition (current)) that you downgraded from. However i RECENTLY read an article that seemed to state that dealing with IE removal is more convoluted in WIN 7 than in previous windows operating systems. Other members may wish to contribute re that. truenorthhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Removal_of_Internet_Explorer
There is an ENTIRE Wikipedia Article detailing all the ways you can go about totally removing Internet Explorer, most of which involve modifying your Windows SETUP DVD.

Quote from above:
One of Microsoft's arguments during the United States v. Microsoft trial was that removing Internet Explorer from Windows may result in system instability. At least one commentator supported this argument, and noted that removing Internet Explorer would also disable Windows Update, leaving the user without vital security updates to the operating system. Almost all Windows Updates can be downloaded from Microsoft's homepage independent of the operating system or web browser used.
When removing Internet Explorer prior to Windows installation using nLite, there is a distinction between removing Internet Explorer andInternet Explorer Core. If the latter is not removed, core components needed for displaying HTML help files and other operating system tasks are not removed, but the web browser is removed from the system.

United States vs Microsoft seems epic.
Internet Explorer shouldn't be removed if you want to be able to install Windows updates automatically, i.e. without using an internet browser and manually downloading all the updates you choose.Pennie, what version of IE do you have?  If you have version 9, you should be able to uninstall it, which would take you back to IE8, and then you could reinstall IE9.

And with Chrome, I would also uninstall and then reinstall. And when reinstalling, be sure to unselect any toolbars that come bundled with it.  soybean, isn't that what i was saying in reply #1?truenorth Quote from: truenorth on August 23, 2011, 05:37:01 PM

Im getting frustrated and running out of known things i could test and despite all the current tests ive tried in my opinion spell my ISP connection needs a swift kick to the kerb they are still denying that there is any issues at their end..

Can someone please TELL me how or what i could test to prove once and for all its my ISP...? and/or is there any WAY of knowing if i just change my ISP i wont run into the same problem, be it im in a contract which i will happily buy out of if it fixes my issues.woohooooooo..

my ISP have finally admitted they are having issues with a range of their IPs.. big thanks to lisa_maree for helping me through this in chat help...

now the catch... my ISP tells me there is nothing more than can do at this stage... FMLThat's just ridiculous. You should ditch them and find a better ISP. If they identify a problem at their end which stops people from accessing certain sites they better take some immediate aciton to fix it  It appears that you do have alternative choices re other isp's. Call them and give them the affected website and have them try it with their system. Presuming that they have no issues with it tell them of your contract situation with your current supplier. Tell them you will cancel that contract and come to them ONLY if they will agree that if that site (which is obviously very important for you) must function properly after you switch and if it doesn't they will disconnect you from their service AND NOT charge you for anything. If they agree go back to your current provider and tell them of your intentions to leave them Their attitude may change and they may fix THEIR problem.truenorthIf changing ISP is not an option, consider connecting via an anonymous proxy/VPN.

How do I get to the google chrome search?  Yahoo hijacks it.  Thanks So...if when you open up chrome...it GOES to yahoo search??On your Google Chrome browser, click wrench icon and choose options, then on Basics options look for Search and click current search engine
Yahoo and change to Google, EXIT. You can even change HomePage if you WANT under that same category. If clicking on the Google Chrome icon OPENS up search.yahoo.com, then your homepage is set to search.yahoo.com. In order to change this, click on the wrench icon and then find the Home Page setting (it should be in the basic settings menu that opens automatically).  Select "open this page" and type in www.google.com.  Then make sure the setting called "On Startup" at the very top is set for "open the homepage."

HOWEVER, if I misunderstood you and you just want to set Google as your default search engine, then jason2074 has the proper way to do that.

Our problem is that YouTube videos keep bufferin and won't play. Also any audio only site won't play and keeps buffering. Sites are slow to load like tumblr, twitter, facebook, myspace, etc. We strictly got these new computers to speed things up and we are experiencing the same problems as with our old computer. We use BT Total Broadband. We are located in the Northeast of England around Newcastle. Also, our broadband goes out a fair amount and we call the helpline and they never say there are problems in our area. We really need help and are both painfully novice at the whole thing. We need very clear extremely easy to understand help. We are going BONKERS with this. HELP!  How do you connect to the internet?
And do you experience the same issue with IE?Hello

I see your issue, you appear to have a difficult time loading video on YouTube, music etc. Try this in a different browser before you read on.

You stated that you had this issue beforehand with the previous computer, this is likely to be the speed of your Internet connection. Your provider can tell you that there is nothing wrong with the connection probably due to them simply checking if the line is working at a usable speed.

The following is a thorough explanation about speed testing, and reviewing what speeds would be good. If you doubt this is connection speed related, ignore.

Now here's some information that may be a bit difficult for you to understand (as you said, extremely simple )

You should test the connection speed by going to http://www.speedtest.net and there should be a begin test button that should appear in a few seconds. Yes the design is pretty neat actually.   When you have clicked begin test, it will automatically begin measuring the ping (distance between your computer and the server you are testing, the lower the better), download speed (this is how fast that video will download! Higher is better), and upload (uploading photos to Facebook, sending a file to a friend, uploading a video to YouTube... Higher is better) speed.

When the test is complete it will show the results. If you click on share, then on the tab that says forum, copy the code and paste it here so we can see if your Internet is the issue.

I'm on my IPOD Touch right now, but I can post some example tests here for you.

Slow, will take a while to download that video.

The DOWNLOAD here is rather slow, as mentioned above. The upload is not the best, but a small amount slower than most connections. The ping here is rather good, the lower the better here.

This is a suitable connection, will work well.
Note: the upload is a bit above average, most providers have less than 1Mbps.

Download is suitable, good for YouTube etc, even for online games which you probably don't play.
Upload here is great, above average. Great for anything you will throw at it.
Ping is OK. not bad.

This is a FANTASTIC connection, I still can't believe I reached this speed.

Download is reeeaaaaaalllllyyyy good.  Enough said.
Upload is great, above average.
Ping is great.

If you have any issues let me know.

Enjoy your new laptops too.

We connect to the internet wirelessly into BT Total Broadband. I believe my ping is high and the rest is low. MY husband's computer had these results: Ping/84ms Download Speed/0.13mbps Upload Speed/0.38mbps. My results for my computer are the ones I copied and pasted. I did a computer rating also:
Processor: Calculations Per Second 3.8
Memory: (RAM) Memory Operations Per Second 5.1
Graphics: Desktop performance for windows 4.2
Gaming Graphics: 3D business and gaming graphics performance 5.6
Primary Hard Disc: Disk data transfer rate 5.9
Wow, that is a poor connection actually.

By now, this has nothing to do with your computer, it's likely the connection (like if they use good wiring for it).

I had a whole chunk typed up here, but I went to the BT site to review and I guess the page refreshed when I was in a different tab.

Ok back on topic:  The base plans for your provider boast high speeds, even for the base packages. Now this is depending on how far the server is and if the line is quality. If it isn't it won't be as fast. I recommend calling your provider about this, and how you are getting extremely less than what you may be paying for. (like I said, I don't know what you have, but the basic packages looked like 20Mbps)

This isn't exactly my area of expertise, but I hope it helped a bit. We supposedly have the 40mbp BT Total Broadband package but, it can't possibly be that fast. Regular internet pages take long to load, too. I've looked at Virgin and they have one that is 100Mbps. Now, THAT'S fast! Plus, even if we only get 50 or 60MBps on that it's still faster than BT. Use the LAN port to connect one laptop wired and try browsing/streaming again to check the difference. Run speedtest again and post the result. Quote from: Artemis on August 07, 2011, 04:15:30 PM

I can't imagine why anyone needs 100Mbps.  The majority of Internet users have no real need for such blazing speeds.  I have a 3Mbps DSL Internet connection and I have no problem playing youtube videos.  Even intro level DSL services which typically provide 768Kbps will usually play much streaming video content fairly smoothly.

Your problem, as KenwoodGT has stated well, is that you're just not getting anywhere near the speed you should be getting from your ISP.  Run some speed tests are various times of the day with both computers and document the results and then use this info in dealing with your ISP.  Also, if you can ask some nearby neighbors who are using the same ISP whether they have similar problems, this could be additional evidence to support your POSITION when dealing with your ISP. If after doing as soybean has suggested (in it's entirety if possible) you can dialogue with the ISP but i doubt that alone will change much (if anything). They probably know this already regardless of what they say to you. Then if you have a regulatory commission (or agency) that governs the terms of service of your providers (as we do here in Canada) i would urge you to complain to them with the accumulated evidence and their own statement of service levels provided (emphasizing the speed aspect) and seek their intervention to obtain the service levels they state or to alter their statements to reflect the reality. Of course the LATTER will NOT improve your speed but it may force them to advertise their product more accurately. Plus if it becomes public KNOWLEDGE and they do nothing about it it could have adverse business consequences for them. Alternatively for your needs to the extent it is available you could investigate alternative providers. truenorth It turned out to be a line fault with my internet service provider BT who fixed it. It isn't perfect yet but hopefully soon it will be. Quote from: Artemis on August 14, 2011, 04:18:43 PM

The new speedtest. I think it may be some better. That still looks extremely slow - If it doesn't improve you should contact BT again as it could be a problem with your phone line.

Solve : Safest Browser?

Which Internet browser is the safest (I mean, is there ONE that scans your downloads, and keeps viruses from getting to your computer?)There isn't a safest. All have vulnerabilities.

The question you should have asked is "which company is the quickest to patch their browser?". Then, personally I would say Firefox. Quote from: Case IH DairyFarmer on August 13, 2011, 02:35:41 PM

You need an anti-virus PROGRAM for that. Like anti-virusses, none can guarantee you that a SPECIFIC browser has no vulnerabilities. A browser won't scan the files that you download (although Firefox CLAIMS doing so, when finishing a download); you would need an anti-virus program for that.

Personally, I would recommend to either use Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. They are both FAST and "safe" browsers.this is interesting:

I don't use IE much but, my wife needs it for a software application. The problem is that when its started it stalls, it says it trying to connect but does nothing, the screne does comes up but there is no ADDRESS in the address bar. Then the only WAY to close it is to go to task manager. All other browsers work fine. I even downloaded the latest version but no change.

IE 8Open IE, go Tools>Internet options>ADVANCED tab click on "Reset" button.
Restart IE.Also try STARTING Internet Explorer in Safe Mode.  Very often add-ons cause this kind of problem.  You can then selectively disable the add-ons until IE is whipped back into shape.  See >here< for more info.

Solve : My browsers missing important add ons! Help??

Answer»
Hi all!  I REALIZE I wrote a topic earlier, but have done research since then
and have new specific questions.

I've TRIED IE, Chrome and Firefox.  I uninstalled and re-installed Chrome and
Firefox I just got today to see if it would perform and no it didn't

I'm starting to realize I'm missing a very obvious add on of some sort -
for example it seems all of them need JAVA.

Please tell me what obvious add ons or extensions that all of them need
and that I'm probably suddenly missing or it is damaged so I can replace it.

Thanks for ANY ideas and help!  Pennie77 What do you mean it did not perform? You should not focus already on any Add-ons or such, as reinstalling a browser would already be WORKABLE unless you will provide more DETAILS what is not performing means to you. You could always update Java directly if that is the problem. Post more info. on your computer spec. and OS.I'm locking this thread. Please do not create new topics for existing issues. It will only cause confusion and duplicate efforts on our part.

Solve : Can't open messages in hotmail on laptop?

Answer»
Hi all,

firstly, thanks for taking time to view and read this question.

I have no problems with my hotmail account on other computers except my laptop. After signing into my account on my laptop, when I click on a message or folder the 'loading' message box appears in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen. This will remain as is and won't follow through to open the message or folder. I am also able to sign out of my account no problem.

I have also no problem signing in and out of other sites such as paypal, ebay, etc. Does anyone have an idea why messages/folders cannot be OPENED on my laptop and a solution to fix the problem? All help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,

therocker
What web browser do you normally use?  Have you tried a different browser?  Do you always ACCESS Hotmail via web browser or do you use an email client?   Your version of Windows?  What email client, if any, do you have installed?

it may be that your browser has a glitch, re-install the browser and try again?
Hi,

I un-installed IE8 and installed IE9 after problem started occurring to see if that would cure it, alas, no joy. I always use browser to access my hotmail account and am currently using windows 7 (64 bit) as operating system. Don't KNOW what an 'email client' is...

Is there a good on-line scanning tool to diagnose what the problem may be?

Thanks again for help.

Hi again,

i've just logged onto hotmail acc to see if any luck. I have been able to DELETE messages and move other messages to folders. However i still can't open either messages in inbox or open folders. An email client is email-specific software such as Outlook Express (found on Windows XP and older Windows OS), Outlook (usually bundled with Microsoft Office), Windows Mail (comes with Windows Vista), and Windows Live Mail (a free download that can be used with Windows 7).  In other words, it's a way to do email without using a web browser.  An email client can be used for Hotmail.

What anti-virus and other protection programs (spyware removal, firewall, etc.) are you using?

Has Hotmail ever worked right with your laptop?

Hi again,

still no joy in opening messages in hotmail.

Yes, i,ve never had a problem with hotmail before. However, i must mention that i gave my laptop to a friend to look at as it was slow starting-up. He works with computers. He uninstalled the following security software : Super Antispyware, Win Patrol, Hijack Hunter and IObit toolbox. I now only have Malwarebytes and Symantec Endpoint protection.

Hope this helps someone help me. Thanks again for taking time to read & reply.

As a troubleshooting step, can you download and install the Firefox browser and see whether you can access Hotmail with it?
Hi soybean,

i have tried your suggestion regarding using firefox. It is working grand, can open messages and all other functions of hotmail account. I have tried IE9 again, alas, it is still not allowing message access.

Thank-you so much for your suggestion. How do i thank-you so that your 'thank-you' tally increases ?
