| Answer» I have used Yahoo Mail for years but recently the response has become very slow with MANY ADDS appearing. Is there anything I can do about this? Most likely you have a malware problem if you have not been keeping on top of the problem. Go here , carefully follow the directions and POST the 3 required logs for analysis and cleaning by a malware specialist.Thank you karmac. I have gone to the malware removal and done what was suggested up to step 3. I have Windows 98 and SuperAntiSpy and Malwarebytes will not operate with it. I COULD not do Step 6, the Java update, apparently for a similar reason. So I did not attempt Step 6. Ok, you'll have to post this problem for evilfantasy to see in the virus forum as he may not see it here. EXPLAIN as you did above and he or Super Dave will help you out. | |

| 1055. | Solve : Pages not loading unless I reload? |
| Answer» Okay this is getting really annoying. I have XP, on a laptop running firefox(latest) and everytime I visit a webpage, it acts like its loading, but if I leave it it never loads. But...if I hit f5 a whole bunch, or Alt-D then Enter a couple of times it finally loads. Ad when it does LOAD, it's fast. Uninstall Chrome... I have already done that. Reboot=Many times. Same thing with IE. Nothing happened before this started happening. I have recently formatted hard drive and reinstalled XP, but Firefox Chrome worked fine for a while before this started happening. Then I switched back to Firefox, and it was still happening. Quote I have recently formatted hard drive and reinstalled XPWhat was the reason for it? Quote from: Broni on November 21, 2009, 11:02:05 PM What was the reason for it? Crazy virus that was getting worse and worse, EF couldn't even help me fix it it was that bad. It would AUTOMATICALLY shutdown any virus scanners and put porn shortcuts on my desktop.Close Firefox. Go Start>All Programs>Mozilla Firefox, click on Mozilla Firefox (safe mode). Same thing? Are you certain you formatted the drive? Quote from: Broni on November 22, 2009, 09:35:49 AM Close Firefox. Go Start>All Programs>Mozilla Firefox, click on Mozilla Firefox (safe mode). Same thing?Yep. And Yes I am certain, I didn't even do it myself, I took it to a computer services place to do it Quote from: Google on November 22, 2009, 11:52:41 AM Yep.Then you can't possibly be certain unless you stood there and watched them do it. It sounds to me like your SYSTEM may still be infected.Buut,, its not. I've done scans with AVG and MBAM. So... well I guess it could still be but I'm sure it's not because there are no other symptoms. And you may be right. But for now none of us have any other explanation, so why not post a hijack this log in the malware section of this forum just to be 100% certain?Yea, okay.. ill do that | |
| 1056. | Solve : internet search? |

| 1057. | Solve : Firefox 2 illegal operation and shut down? |
| Answer» I used to use Internet EXPLORER but changed to Firefox when I had a crashing problem with IE and I could not get ADVICE on how to fix it. I have managed to fix it in recent days. I would like to stick with Firefox now. I just reinstalled Firefox 2.0.00.20 and it crashed. I will reinstall Firefox 2.7 as I cannot recall that version ever crashing. I will advise what happens. thanks for the suggestion.I reinstalled Firefox 2.0.0.7 but it also crashed. I then went back to Firefox 2.0.0.20 and it has crashed so often that I am now using Internet Explorer. I would like to get back to Firefox as I have bookmarked many pages. I expect  it is a problem that is easily fixed but Firefox Help people have not been much help because they no longer support Firefox 2. I have had no RESPONSE from the Firefox Forum.Try this version...Thanks for that suggestion, PATIO. I uninstalled Firefox 2.0.0.20 and then downloaded firefox 2.0.0.17 It would not instal. however. There was a message that access was denied. I do not know how to overcome that. Thanks rthompson. I am now using both FF 2.20 and IE. I suspect FF crashed only when I was using Yahoo Mail. I will check that out and report back.I am still having the problem. It has occurred 5 times in the past two days and each time it was when I transferred to Yahoo Mail from another SITE. However, it does not always crash when I go to Yahoo Mail. I will continue to kkep a log of the crashes to see whether there is some consistent symptom.I'd consider switching to GMail... | |
| 1058. | Solve : IE 8 Video problem? |
| Answer» Well, as long as you keep IE as the default browser you should be fine. You can uninstall the msn browser if you like.OK, I'm TOTALLY confused on this one (which is not uncommon).  I've always viewed MSN as more of an AOL type of service.  Until today I've never heard of an MSN browser. Ok, I found it in Windows components. Will deleting it change the look of my screens and tool bars? Currently when I access the net through MSN I have to use a password. If I go directly to IE I don't need a password. Will I still be able to go through the MSN portal? I have a kid at home and like to use some of the MSN parental controls. If I delete it and don't like the results, how can I put it back? If you decide that you want it back just reverse the PROCESS that I had you do to uninstall it. Well I went in and uninstalled MSN Explorer. It was a learning experience. I lost all of my e-mails and shortcuts, which I should have saved before I started. I decided to reinstall it to get them back but the reinstall didn't work and locked out my account. After much time with tech support they figured out how to get my account open again but all of my stuff was still gone. I figured out how to get it back while I was waiting on hold with them - by copying it from another user profile on the computer. I still have the same occasional video problem but I can get around it by unselecting then reselecting "Show Navigation Bar". It must reload something because then I get the full screen so I can navigate. Gotta love MSN. When I get brave and have some time to kill I'll save all my stuff ditch it and use something else. Thanks for all of the help. SteveOkay MarshST, sorry you lost your favorites, that's what I get for posting without at least two pots of coffee in my system. Let us know what turns out for you. | |

| 1062. | Solve : Increase the connection limit IE 8? |
| Answer» Hi guys Problem: Slow Page rendering Can anybody explain it a LITTLE more, it only gives you a link to download the file. But i am interested to know a bit more. Windows xp pro sp3 Explained here: http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=2448 and here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q183110 (M$ link concerns IE 6, but you GOT the idea). Quote from: Broni on November 24, 2009, 10:44:52 PM Explained here: http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=2448 and here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q183110 (M$ link concerns IE 6, but you got the idea). Hey thanks broni, for those links , interesting, might give them a try. You may also check this one: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/12/31/tcp-z-free-download-half-open-tcpip-memory-patcher-for-x86-and-x64-windows-7-vista-and-xp/ It doesn't apply to Vista anymore, since with one of the updates, M$ DROPPED the limit. Quote from: Broni on November 25, 2009, 09:01:54 AM You may also check this one: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/12/31/tcp-z-free-download-half-open-tcpip-memory-patcher-for-x86-and-x64-windows-7-vista-and-xp/ OK, broni this does not apply to vista, so that leaves me with the xp machine. I have just added these to the REGISTRY in xp.., but would this work in vista , i've got a bit confused now , with "updates dropped the limit" "MaxConnectionsPerServer"=dword:00000010 "MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server"=dword:00000010 So if i was to try TCP-Z Free Download (Half Open TCP/IP Memory Patcher for x86 and x64 Windows 7, Vista and XP) Would i have to delete these reg enteries in xpIn your first post, you said: Quote Windows xp pro sp3so this is what my advice was for. As for Vista, if you updates are current, you don't need any TCP/IP patch, because half-open connections are not limited anymore. Also, in Vista "MaxConnections" are already set to 10. Quote from: Broni on November 25, 2009, 03:16:10 PM In your first post, you said:so this is what my advice was for. Sorry i confused myself there. got it now Quote Also, in Vista "MaxConnections" are already set to 10. If i navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERS\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet settings In vista, these DWORD values are not there. MaxConnectionsPerServer"=dword:00000010 "MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server"=dword:00000010 I had to add those in xp I am not sure if this is the same path for Vista, but would i have to do the same in vista I have those entries in Vista, but it's possible, I added them and I simply don't remember. You can safely add them. Quote from: Broni on November 26, 2009, 09:17:29 PM I have those entries in Vista, but it's possible, I added them and I simply don't remember. OK broni, just added them . Thanks.... Sure thing Quote Also, in Vista "MaxConnections" are already set to 10. Hi broni, just wonderd what the 16 is in brackets 00000010 (16)No clue | |

| Answer» I CANT download it using firefox or internet EXPLORER. It says Unable to connectPatio, Lack of WGA should not do that. The screen shot I posted is from a XP SYSTEM that does NOT have WGA. Au' Contraire... Quote from: [email protected] on November 28, 2009, 07:05:00 PM I cant download it using firefox or internet explorer. It says I think he means that he can't access the page at all. It might be WGA, but i don't think that is the issue. Then again, i'm brainless . Let's wait for the OP to respond. Quote from: patio on November 29, 2009, 06:41:02 PM Au' Contraire...The river does not swell with CLEAR water. If you want to try on a working PC that has good WGA, then you can get the install file and just install to your PC in question. Or go to this link and click on "Download Latest Version" on right side column and you'll get it downloaded without that WGA hassle But ..... Hopefully you have legit windows. | |

| 1071. | Solve : To IE8 or not to IE8 that is the question.? |
| Answer» Long / short I thought Windows 7 had IE8 preinstalled...Didn't even read he's USING 7 - of course you are correct - IE8 is the DEFAULT browser. Quote from: Allan on November 30, 2009, 05:56:18 AM Didn't even read he's using 7 - of course you are correct - IE8 is the default browser. Quote from: Allan on November 30, 2009, 05:56:18 AM Didn't even read he's using 7 - of course you are correct - IE8 is the default browser. Hmmm Not sure about that. Everytime I first use IE a screen comes up asking me to upgrde to IE8 ? If it was already installed would it ask me to upgrade? And how do I verify which version of IE I am using. Clik on Help/About in IE and it will tell you...IE8 is usable. If you like it, then go ahead and use it Am wondering, though, IE7 is not an OPTION for windows 7? Windows 7 ships with IE8. To the best of my knowledge you can not "downgrade". Quote from: Allan on December 04, 2009, 06:16:41 AM Windows 7 ships with IE8. To the best of my knowledge you can not "downgrade". yup. Just like IE7 comes with Vista and you cannot downgrade to IE6There is no downgrade path to go to IE7 in Win7...however if you have a pick axe handy and 2 days of your time i can get you there... | |
| 1072. | Solve : Discovery: Wheel mouse scrolls tabs in browser? |
| Answer» This is not a question, just a comment that might be of interest to some viewers.  I just discovered something I had never noticed before. With Firefox open and with too many tabs open to be displayed all at the same time on the tabs bar, hovering my wheel mouse over the tabs bar and then moving the wheel scrolls the tabs.  Before now, I had always used the arrows at both ends of the tabs bar to scroll tabs.   I have multiple tab rows.Salmon Trout, can you confirm whether you use Tab Mix Plus, or is there some other way do to this? Edit: And, was the scrolling technique familiar to any of you? As I said, I just discovered it.Yes, I've known about it all along. Not sure if I originally found it by accident or if I read about it. My primary browser is IE, but I tend to play around with all "new" apps that I install and find out as much as I can about them.I use Tab Mix Plus, and I have set the maximum rows to 5, ALTHOUGH in practice I never have more than 2 visible. [edit] I just Googled for others, and found and installed Tab Kit 0.5.8. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5447 After installation, it makes you restart Firefox. Be warned, if you already have Tab Mix Plus enabled, at this point they fight each other, and after a longish pause (1 or 2 mins) you get a message saying they are incompatible, and asking which one you want to disable. I am using it now, I can't SEE a lot of difference to be honest. Thanks for that info. I see the default Firefox tabs bar has another feature I haven't paid any attention to but, now that I look at it, I think I may use. It's the drop-down arrow at the right end of the tabs bar which displays a list of all open tabs in that window. | |
| 1073. | Solve : how to block Facebook on Firefox?? |
| Answer» Hi Team, I'm using Firefox version 3.5.5... I want to block Facebook on my Firefox. How can I do that? Do I need to install add-ons? Can WOT do that? Reason for this is because I created a new user account for my little cousin. I did that for her studies and I want to make SURE that she can't access any social networking sites like Facebook. I'm using multiple user accounts in my machine: Admin, Guest 1, and Guest 2... I contacted K9's technical support but they doesn't have a feature to configure multiple user accounts. What applies to one account will apply to all accounts. CyberPatrol is windows profile-aware. I'm surprised other products of this nature aren't...Some of the new routers have something like that in the router. So it makes it hard to witch it on or ff. Read this: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r23400525-Linksys-N-routers-open-to-Ciscos-snooping So the hardware solution is not much better that just using 'Hosts' file. So that means you want a software solution that is more flexible. What you want is called "Parental Control Software". http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2346997,00.asp The above article includes a review on a good FREE product. | |

Bookmarks only store the URL. there is no special power to have login credentials or anything included. Quote from: jefflynn on December 16, 2009, 12:13:00 PM See that's what I thought, but somehow..... this one bookmark I have logs me in automatically and I'd love to know how it was done.It simply can't be done. A bookmark is only a link to page. A cookie stores login details like your USERNAME and password.Well, let me take a GUESS. At home you don't have the same in environment. At home you have cookies enabled and you save passwords in your browser and you bookmark things. Here on the CH login there is an option to keep you logged in. So, you probably checked that also. Quote So maybe I can save the cookie after logging in? Would that work like a bookmark if I dragged it to my start menu for example? No, you don't create cookies, the browser does. There is nothing to drag and drop. No they're not secure sites like a bank site. They're sites I use as tools for work. But everytime I need to use them I have to login and since Im trouble shooting over the PHONE it would make my life easier if I could figure out how they (I dont know who they are) made the one bookmark that I have.maybe it's in the URL. | |

| Answer» Quote from: roccenstein on DECEMBER 15, 2009, 08:43:53 AM I use AT&T dsl service, with a Speedstream modem, but it shouldn't make a difference which brand of dsl modem I replace it with, right? When my modem failed I couldn't find any retail modem that worked with AT&T (Bellsouth) I think it MAY vary with whatever REGION you are in. They will replace a dead modem for free though(may have to use Patio's tactic). It LOOKS like this issue has been resolved but I just wanted to point this out in case ANYONE else with a similar issue happens upon this thread at a later time. | |

| 1089. | Solve : problem composing emails? |
| Answer» Sometimes when I am composing an email the text I am typing in does not come up on the screen immediately. I might have to wait about a minute before it appears. It only happens occasionally but it is most disconcerting. I have Windows 98 and am using Firefox and Yahoo Mail.I reported this problem last November when it was very bad. For some reason it went away but now it is back. I cannot think of anything that I have done that may have affected the situation. I notice that there is a message down at the left hand bottom of the screen to the effect that data is being transferred from some online source. Is that causing the hold up and can I stop it?I think this is in part due to you using web email rather than software on your own computer. Hence, when you are using Yahoo it is randomly transferring data on/off the web. This uses up your limited resources. I would suggest an alternative is to use Outlook Express or Thunderbird for you email software. That way you don't need to have any web TRAFFIC until you are ready to send your mail. The other thing that occurs to me is to pre-type your email in your text editor and just copy/paste it into yahoo.Thank you dude1234 for those comments. The problem varies appreciably for some reason. I have had little trouble today, although it is happening with this note. The problem seems to get worse during the day. I previously used Word to produce my emails and then copy to Yahoo compose. Many of these emails became distorted when posted to group sites. I often use Outlook Express but I use Firefox most of the time and go to Yahoo Mail for the email in and out. Quote I often use Outlook Express but I use Firefox most of the time and go to Yahoo Mail for the email in and out.If you have a free Yahoo Mail, you're not using Outlook Express for it because it doesn't work with OE. So, you use OE for another email account, right? That is correct. I use a different email address for OE. However, I have used Yahoo Mail and my yahoo email address for many years but the problem has only emerged in recent times. Is it that Yahoo Mail now puts sufficient load on my computer that it is slow to respond to my input? At times, I have to wait about ten SECONDS before what I typed appears on the screen. This response varies in no apparent fashion apart from the fact that it appears to get worse during the day. I am not having any problem at the moment.Get ThunderBird...did i mention it's FREE ? ?I have accumulated many folders containing past emails in Yahoo Mail. I would be loathe to change to Thunderbird for that reason as it would mean swapping back to Yahoo Mail to FIND past emails. Is there some way I can switch off the the Yahoo Mail processing that is slowing down my computer so drastically? Or is it something else that has caused this problem to emerge? Quote from: denisaf on April 19, 2010, 08:37:44 PM I have accumulated many folders containing past emails in Yahoo Mail. I would be loathe to change to Thunderbird for that reason as it would mean swapping back to Yahoo Mail to find past emails.I believe you can't use Thunderbird for Yahoo Mail any more than you can use Outlook Express for it. Yahoo Mail is not a POP mail account; it's a webmail type of email account. Quote from: denisaf on April 19, 2010, 08:37:44 PM Is there some way I can switch off the the Yahoo Mail processing that is slowing down my computer so drastically? Or is it something else that has caused this problem to emerge?Well, do you need to keep Yahoo Mail open all the time? If not, then just close it. By the way, tell us more about your computer (processor, RAM, etc.). Since you're using Windows 98, what version of Firefox are you using? I am using Firefox 2.0.0.20 which, if I remember correctly, is the last version that can be used with Windows 98SE. The computer has 192 MB RAM and a 74.5 GB disk. I cannot remember how to find out what the processor is!I've got a suggestion how you can interrupt the web activity while you draft up your message in Yahoo. Actually 2 suggestions. (i) In your Firefox main menu - go to file - then click on "work offline". When you are ready to send mail just change back to "work online". (ii) Install Zone Alarm software (freebee) and when you are ready to compose your mail, just hit the "lock" button and that will lock-out all web activity. Whatcha think?Thank you dude1234. That seems to be a very useful suggestion. I will try the first one and then report back. I will give a day or so to be certain.Try Google's gmail. I believe you'll find it faster than Yahoo! Mail. gmail can also be POP3-enabled so that you can use Outlook Express for it.I was looking at a way of over coming the problem without having to change my routine too much as I am old. I know that there are many possible improvements if I were to go to the trouble of learning about them and implementing them. Going to gmail could well lead to an improvement in future operations but are hardly worth the transition from my PRESENT routine. Thank you for helping but going offline seems to be solving my problem.clicking on Work Offline in Files of Firefox when I want to enter text appears to work, then clicking on it again when I want to get back online. I have no response problems since I have employed it over the past days. Thank you again, dude1234 | |

| 1095. | Solve : Internet Toolbar Problem etc? |
| Answer» Just recently downloaded Kaspersky onto a Windows XP computer, However computer was running very SLOW with it so I decided to delete the programme. After using CC cleaner it pulled up a range of things including a few DSL files? saying something like disconnected, so I deleted them all and now my Internet Explorer does not have afavoritess bar, I cannot copy and paste, I cannot access the Internet Options in control panel either, when clicking it it pops up slightly then doesn't show. When trying to use Ctrl and F4 that also seems to do nothing. In an internet explorer it USUALLY tells you what web page you are on through the tabs, yet after deleting the files it does not. I've used CCleaner for years and it simply won't cause those problems. I believe you probably have numerous issues going on with your computer. I'd proceed with Allan's advice regarding a repair install. Quote from: soybean on August 13, 2010, 11:17:58 AM Well, don't blame all that on CCleaner. There is no reason at all to use ANY registry cleaner, no matter how benign. And other than contradicting me, what is the purpose of your post? | Answer» Just a quick NOTICE to anyone who is having trouble with to large or to small icons on the TOOLBAR,in the firefox BROWSER, and there not been a to obvious way to change them. If you go to the address box and type in about:config this will bring you to a warning box, but carry on, as the warning says, please be careful. In the box type layout c.s.s.devpixels.perpx. Right click on it, and you will be able to modify the number from the figure it is now, ,probs -1, and change it to 1.0. If this is still not big enough, go up in 0.1 increments, and that should do the trick. HOPE this helpsMethod 1 - change default TEXT size: | |
