Solve : Yahoo Mail advertisements?

Answer»

I have used Yahoo Mail for years but recently the response has become very slow with MANY ADDS appearing. Is there anything I can do about this? Most likely you have a malware problem if you have not been keeping on top of the problem. Go here , carefully follow the directions and POST the 3 required logs for analysis and cleaning by a malware specialist.Thank you karmac. I have gone to the malware removal and done what was suggested up to step 3. I have Windows 98 and SuperAntiSpy and Malwarebytes will not operate with it. I COULD not do Step 6, the Java update, apparently for a similar reason. So I did not attempt Step 6. Ok, you'll have to post this problem for evilfantasy to see in the virus forum as he may not see it here. EXPLAIN as you did above and he or Super Dave will help you out.

Solve : Disconnect-reconnect when switching between IE/Outlook Express?

Answer» HI everybody!  I haven't been on here in a while. I just moved from Forida to N. Mississippi and havent GOT my PC GOING yet, so this question is about my friends PC with BellSouth Dial-Up connection.
(While connected with IE , everytime he accesses his Outlook Express Account to check email, the dial-up connection disconnects - then reconnects. What to do? Is more INFORMATION needed?
TIA

Hi Lectro, OE has an option to hang up after sending and receiving and IE has an option to connect on demand, could it be a combination of those settings causing it?I called my self checking the settings for those but may still not have it set right. Can you be more specific on which settings?
Thanks for the help!In OE, go to Tools, Options, Connection.  Experiment with the settings there.

Solve : How do I remove Earthlink??

Very good. Thanks for the information. QUOTE from: I Shooter on November 19, 2009, 12:39:23 PM

The only problem is all my e-mail is no longer STORED on Embarq site it is now on my computer. I liked it on there site. If somethng went wrong with my computer I would still have my mail on there site. Is there a way to have it in both places?
Yes, there is.  In WINDOWS Mail, go to Tools, Accounts, SELECT your account, and then select Properties.  In the WINDOW Mail Properties dialog panel, select the Advanced tab and put a check mark in the box for "Leave a copy of messages on the server."Thank you very much. That sounds much better. I will try it.

Solve : dtapart files that I can't open?

Answer»

I have two folders that have turned into dtapart FILES.
I don't know of any thing that I did to make this happen.
Is there any way to change them back or open the files.
I have tried to use VLC player  but they won't open.
This is what the FILE turned into. When I downloaded it it only had the info to the avi
I have tried to erase the numbers but they STILL won't open.
I may have downloaded some of those files with "Down Load Them All" but not all of the changed files

ShaniaTwain-ImGonnaGetchaGood.avi--(61078884-4090-92eb-6550caf11fb8).dtapart

Thanks for any helpIt looks like a partial download, using "Down Load Them All".
If it's partial download, it won't open. Its not a partial download, I have folder with hundreds of files that I have viewed many times. I do not know why this folder changed, other folders within this folder did not switch to dtapart files.

Thanks for your replyyou mean you've viewed this file before? is that the only file that changed? All of the hundreds of clips have been viewed before, avi, wmv, zip formats. They all switched to dtapart files and I can't veiw them anymore.Did you try to rename any of files, you know for sure, you played them before?Go through what rename them means.
I have changed the file by eliminating the numbers and ADDING avi or wmv and WINDOWS says do you want to rename I say Yes. Is this correct and what you mean? They still wont open. Quote from: Broni on November 05, 2009, 10:08:39 PM

It looks like a partial download, using "Down Load Them All".
Actually, the name is DownThemAll

Do have it installed?  If so, I think I'd remove it and see whether that solves the problem.

Solve : Pages not loading unless I reload?

Answer»

Okay this is getting really annoying. I have XP, on a laptop running firefox(latest) and everytime I visit a webpage, it acts like its loading, but if I leave it it never loads. But...if I hit f5 a whole bunch, or Alt-D then Enter a couple of times it finally loads. Ad when it does LOAD, it's fast.

But everytime I first visit ANY page it just doesnt load. And sometimes after pages have already loaded, the loading circle in the firefox "tab" still "loads". It's really wierd and annoying. I have high speed internet and my PC never used to do this until recently. I did have google chrome before and it started doing this, so I switched back to firefox because I thought it was the browser.

But its still doing it with firefox!! Please help, its so frustrating!!What happens with IE?

And you SAID this started recently. What happened just before the problem arose (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)?Uninstall Chrome...
Re-boot. Quote from: patio on November 21, 2009, 04:20:15 PM

Uninstall Chrome...
Re-boot.

I have already done that. Reboot=Many times. Same thing with IE. Nothing happened before this started happening. I have recently formatted hard drive and reinstalled XP, but Firefox Chrome worked fine for a while before this started happening.
Then I switched back to Firefox, and it was still happening.

Then you can't possibly be certain unless you stood there and watched them do it. It sounds to me like your SYSTEM may still be infected.Buut,, its not. I've done scans with AVG and MBAM. So... well I guess it could still be but I'm sure it's not because there are no other symptoms. And you may be right. But for now none of us have any other explanation, so why not post a hijack this log in the malware section of this forum just to be 100% certain?Yea, okay.. ill do that

Solve : Firefox 2 illegal operation and shut down?

Answer»

I used to use Internet EXPLORER but changed to Firefox when I had a crashing problem with IE and I could not get ADVICE on how to fix it. I have managed to fix it in recent days. I would like to stick with Firefox now. I just reinstalled Firefox 2.0.00.20 and it crashed. I will reinstall Firefox 2.7 as I cannot recall that version ever crashing. I will advise what happens. thanks for the suggestion.I reinstalled Firefox 2.0.0.7 but it also crashed. I then went back to Firefox 2.0.0.20 and it has crashed so often that I am now using Internet Explorer. I would like to get back to Firefox as I have bookmarked many pages. I expect  it is a problem that is easily fixed but Firefox Help people have not been much help because they no longer support Firefox 2. I have had no RESPONSE from the Firefox Forum.Try this version...Thanks for that suggestion, PATIO. I uninstalled Firefox 2.0.0.20 and then downloaded firefox 2.0.0.17 It would not instal. however. There was a message that access was denied. I do not know how to overcome that. Thanks rthompson. I am now using both FF 2.20 and IE. I suspect FF crashed only when I was using Yahoo Mail. I will check that out and report back.I am still having the problem. It has occurred 5 times in the past two days and each time it was when I transferred to Yahoo Mail from another SITE. However, it does not always crash when I go to Yahoo Mail. I will continue to kkep a log of the crashes to see whether there is some consistent symptom.I'd consider switching to GMail...
With all the fluff yahoo has added to their mail site over the last 6 months i rerely if ever use it anymore...Thanks for that suggestion, patio. I have saved many posts to Yahoo Mail folders. I expect these can be copied to Gmail folders if I change.I have tried to run Profile Manager for 98 using firefox.exe -Profile Manager but I get the message that FF is open, when it is not. I have shut down the computer and re-booted. That makes no difference. The crashes are still occurring.

Solve : IE 8 Video problem?

Answer»

Well, as long as you keep IE as the default browser you should be fine. You can uninstall the msn browser if you like.OK, I'm TOTALLY confused on this one (which is not uncommon).  I've always viewed MSN as more of an AOL type of service.  Until today I've never heard of an MSN browser.

MSN doesn't use IE as it's browser?  That's not exactly a vote of confidence.

How do you get to MSN without a browser?  Is this a DIAL up service?MSN uses a shell of IE....the same ...only different
I wanted to try to delete the the MSN browser but I am not sure how. I can go into Add/Remove programs but it just lists MSN without any more detailed options. I also tried in Set Program options and DEFAULTS to select IE as my default internet browser but the selection returns to "Use my CURRENT Web browser" as soon as I exit. I also tried that in IE tools. I am the PC admin and I also rebooted with no success. Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks,
SteveWhen you are in Add/Remove Programs you want to click on Add/Remove Windows Components.  You can find and uninstall it from there. Ok, I found it in Windows components. Will deleting it change the look of my screens and tool bars? Currently when I access the net through MSN I have to use a password. If I go directly to IE I don't need a password. Will I still be able to go through the MSN portal? I have a kid at home and like to use some of the MSN parental controls. If I delete it and don't like the results, how can I put it back?

Thanks,
SteveAre you using IE now? Are you happy with it? Then uninstalling MSN broswer will not affect anything. Quote from: MarshSt on November 10, 2009, 01:51:02 PM

If you decide that you want it back just reverse the PROCESS that I had you do to uninstall it. Well I went in and uninstalled MSN Explorer. It was a learning experience. I lost all of my e-mails and shortcuts, which I should have saved before I started. I decided to reinstall it to get them back but the reinstall didn't work and locked out my account. After much time with tech support they figured out how to get my account open again but all of my stuff was still gone. I figured out how to get it back while I was waiting on hold with them - by copying it from another user profile on the computer. I still have the same occasional video problem but I can get around it by unselecting then reselecting "Show Navigation Bar". It must reload something because then I get the full screen so I can navigate. Gotta love MSN. When I get brave and have some time to kill I'll save all my stuff ditch it and use something else.
Thanks for all of the help.
SteveOkay MarshST, sorry you lost your favorites, that's what I get for posting without at least two pots of coffee in my system.  Let us know what turns out for you.

OK, broni this does not apply to vista, so that leaves me with the xp machine.
I have just added these to the REGISTRY in xp.., but would this work in vista , i've got a bit confused now , with "updates dropped the limit"

"MaxConnectionsPerServer"=dword:00000010
"MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server"=dword:00000010

So if i was to try

Would i have to delete these reg enteries in xpIn your first post, you said:

so this is what my advice was for.

As for Vista, if you updates are current, you don't need any TCP/IP patch, because half-open connections are not limited anymore.

Also, in Vista "MaxConnections" are already set to 10. Quote from: Broni on November 25, 2009, 03:16:10 PM

In vista, these DWORD values are not there.

"MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server"=dword:00000010

I had to add those in xp

I am not sure if this is the same path for Vista, but would i have to do the same in vista

Solve : I.E hangs and freezes?

Answer»

Win XP Home 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090804-1435: SP3

I am on Version 7.0.5730.13 Internet explorer with just the blank google
search page, a while ago it kept hanging whilst loading and searching. So
after looking on the net I disabled Google toolbar and I.E was mostly itself
again

My problem now is whilst it loads much quicker (around 10/15 sec from start
off and a few seconds to open a new window), it keeps stalling and hanging,
amongst the faults are not loading a window and not loading after clicking
on a link, some times it just does not "see" the link at all when you HOVER
the curser over it, i.e the info does not show up in the bottom left hand
corner and therefore it does nothing if you click on the link (probable
because I.E has frozen in this window by then), and sometimes when clicking
on a link or opening a new window - it TAKES a few seconds to start loading
the green progress bars and then they load slowly one at a time until they
get to the middle (around 3/4 bars) and then stop. Sometimes when a window
has loaded although I can use the page, I notice that the green bars are
still showing - sometimes all of them but sometimes less than all, as THOUGH
it has not fully loaded.

earlier to day I visited my fav' climbing forum as normal "with
add-ons" browsed the forum from one sub-forum to the next, from thread to thread
for an hour,  then on and off for ten minutes here and there during the
day - no real PROBLEMS don't think it "hanged" at all. (also in OE sent a
few emails and recieved - perfect - never any probs in OE)

But!!!!  Tonight I have OPENED two separate IE windows both running
"without" add-ons both with different web sites - both are other forums that
I use, both pages have "hung" they are both just sat there.

One has, in the bar at the bottom... a yellow sheild with an "!" in it then
"Waiting forhttp://www.*********( the last link I clicked on - the link to
my profile - this always hangs up ), and 5 green bars in the progress
window.
If I hover the pointy hand over another link then the URL at the bottom
changes to suit but does not move to the next page, when the curser is moved
away again the URL reverts back to as before.

Same on the other window - clicked on link to move to a sub forum and it
hung striaght away - same sheild ...... same 5 green bars. (other times when opening another IE window or clicking on a link (either in the google list or link on web page) the green bars appear and very slowly increase up to three bars and just stop

Whilst these pages are hung and with hardly any lights on my broadband router         ( just one flicker now and then ), I have sent a test email to myself with a jpeg piccy attached, and it sent straight off - green lights on the Router going ten to the dozen.
Any ideas as to what is happening.

Or go to this link and click on "Download Latest Version" on right side column and you'll get it downloaded without that WGA hassle

Why is it that when you add a particular web site to the TRUSTED sites zone, you sometimes get.

Solve : How do I to go back to IE7 from IE8 ??

Answer»

I'm using WindowsXP and a while back I upgraded to Internet Explorer 8.
I would like to go back to Internet Explorer 7
Would someone please GIVE me step by step instructions on how to do that?

Why would I want to do that?

I've been having a lot of problems with ie8 running super slow, hanging up, freezing, ect.  When I open Task Manager there are TWO iexplorer.exe running, using a LOT of memory!

I posted the problem in the virus forum several days ago but got no replies.

However a google SEARCHED revealed the following:

Anyone noticed that in WindowsXP, IE8 runs TWO iexplore.exe in Task Manager?

The first process can use up to 80,000K of memory and the second copy can use 16,000K. I feel like 96,000K is a lot of memory for IE, especially when a friend who has Windows7 says his IE8 only uses 5-15,000K.

At first I thought it was MALWARE because it was using so much memory. I exhausted myself running all KINDS of scans to get rid of it only to realize it was IE8 itself. I was informed recently, it's because of the the Tabs feature and crash recovery. When I uninstalled IE8 and went back to IE7, the problem stopped.

Just something interesting that might save others the frantic search to root out adware. I suppose the bottom line is DO NOT USE IE8 on WinXP

Your help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Solve : To IE8 or not to IE8 that is the question.?

Answer»

Long / short

New puter HP Pavillion Dv6, Win 7 (love it) and it keeps asking me if I want to upgrade to IE8 ?

On the fence but it seems to be problematic judging from some of the threads here.

Think I should leave well enough alone and stay with what I have.

And you folks think..........1) It's not problematic
2) DOWNLOAD and install it. If you don't like it you can always uninstall it

This really isn't a major decision I thought Windows 7 had IE8 preinstalled...

Anyway, I agree with Allan, take IE8 for a spin and see if you like it. If you don't then you can always go back to IE7 until Microsoft cans it and stops support  Quote from: ThomasTheXPUser on November 29, 2009, 07:31:45 PM

And how do I verify which version of IE I am using. Clik on Help/About in IE and it will tell you...IE8 is usable. If you like it, then go ahead and use it

Am wondering, though, IE7 is not an OPTION for windows 7?

Windows 7 ships with IE8. To the best of my knowledge you can not "downgrade". Quote from: Allan on December 04, 2009, 06:16:41 AM

yup. Just like IE7 comes with Vista and you cannot downgrade to IE6There is no downgrade path to go to IE7 in Win7...however if you have a pick axe handy and 2 days of your time i can get you there...

Solve : Discovery: Wheel mouse scrolls tabs in browser?

Answer»

This is not a question, just a comment that might be of interest to some viewers.  I just discovered something I had never noticed before. With Firefox open and with too many tabs open to be displayed all at the same time on the tabs bar, hovering my wheel mouse over the tabs bar and then moving the wheel scrolls the tabs.  Before now, I had always used the arrows at both ends of the tabs bar to scroll tabs.

I'm running Win 7 RC and Firefox 3.3.5 on the system with which I discovered this.  I have not tried it with IE YET. I have multiple tab rows.
How do you do that?   Tab Mix Plus - ONE of the best & most useful add ons Thanks, I may try it.  BTW, I'm using ColorfulTabs, also a nice add-on. YEP - been using that since it first came out - nice add on. Quote from: Salmon Trout on December 05, 2009, 10:17:02 AM

I have multiple tab rows.

Salmon Trout, can you confirm whether you use Tab Mix Plus, or is there some other way do to this?

Edit: And, was the scrolling technique familiar to any of you?  As I said, I just discovered it.Yes, I've known about it all along. Not sure if I originally found it by accident or if I read about it. My primary browser is IE, but I tend to play around with all "new" apps that I install and find out as much as I can about them.I use Tab Mix Plus, and I have set the maximum rows to 5, ALTHOUGH in practice I never have more than 2 visible.

[edit] I just Googled for others, and found and installed Tab Kit 0.5.8.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5447

After installation, it makes you restart Firefox. Be warned, if you already have Tab Mix Plus enabled, at this point they fight each other, and after a longish pause (1 or 2 mins) you get a message saying they are incompatible, and asking which one you want to disable. I am using it now, I can't SEE a lot of difference to be honest.

Thanks for that info.

I see the default Firefox tabs bar has another feature I haven't paid any attention to but, now that I look at it, I think I may use.  It's the drop-down arrow at the right end of the tabs bar which displays a list of all open tabs in that window.

Solve : how to block Facebook on Firefox??

Answer»

Hi Team, I'm using Firefox version 3.5.5... I want to block Facebook on my Firefox. How can I do that? Do I need to install add-ons? Can WOT do that? Reason for this is because I created a new user account for my little cousin. I did that for her studies and I want to make SURE that she can't access any social networking sites like Facebook.

Please HELP.Change the HOSTS file.Gee that's helpful!

To do this, see here: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hostsfaq.htm

Otherwise, see here: http://www.askmehelpdesk.com/internet-web/blocking-facebook-firefox-310963.htmlI found K9 Web Protection, a CONTENT filtering solution for home computer. But unfortunately, it blocks Facebook even in my Admin rights.I'm using multiple user accounts in my machine: Admin, Guest 1, and Guest 2... I contacted K9's technical support but they doesn't have a feature to configure multiple user accounts. What applies to one account will apply to all accounts.

Can anyone help me? I want to block Facebook on Guest 1 and Guest 2 only, but not in Admin. Is it possible to password protect a website? I mean ... so that computer won't let anyone go to said site without correct password.

Like trying to open a password secured ZIP file or something.Maybe change the hosts file to redirect the site to a locally stored html file that prompts you for a password, when the correct one is provided, then redirect to a proxy page for facebook. Also, a good parental controls comes bundled with CA internet security suite, but you can probably get it alone. It supports multiple "users", each with their own DIFFERENT lists of blocked sites and an administrator password to override the block (if you want to let the guest account on once and a while). CyberPatrol is windows profile-aware.

I'm surprised other products of this nature aren't...Some of the new routers have something like that in the router. So it makes it hard to witch it on or ff.  Read this:
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r23400525-Linksys-N-routers-open-to-Ciscos-snooping
So the hardware solution is not much better that just using 'Hosts' file.
So that means you want a software solution that is more flexible.

What you want is called "Parental Control Software".

Solve : How to download emails from Yahoo paid webmail folders to Outlook 2003??

Answer»

Hi,

I have set up MS Outlook 2003 for my Yahoo email account (Paid) and it is working fine and am SENDING and recieving messages but it is downloading only the messages in Yahoo mail account "Inbox" and and is not downloading any of the pre-existing emails in the folders set up in Yahoo mail . I have used filters to route and organize the email to specific folders in Yahoo mail and I do not want to disable these filters as I might be using Yahoo web interface from time to time and want to use Outlook regularly. So in SHORT, how do I download messages from the Yahoo webmail folders too to my outlook without disabling the filters in Yahoo email? PLEASE DO NOT GIVE ME THE BASIC OUTLOOK SET UP INSTRUCTIONS FOR YAHOO ACCOUNTS AS I'M NOT LOOKING FOR THAT AND LOOKING FOR ANSWERS MUCH BEYOND. (Please do not misunderstand the CAPS for shouting, I'm just emphasizing)
Let me know even if there is any SAFE 3rd party software which can do that too?

Thanks much and appreciate your help in advance!!

Regards
BCaps is still shouting. Try YPOPS! (That is its name. I am not shouting!)

Thanks! but will it download the emails sitting in the webmail folders too into outlook?YPOPs! can fetch mail from the Inbox, Bulk mail folder and custom Yahoo! Mail folders. Thanks much! I tried to google Ypops! and went to a website filled with some malware and it started to scan mycomputer etc. Do you know a safe website from where I cand ownload this without any spyware/malware attacks?Well, I saw it here, and this site didn't try anything bad

http://ypopsemail.com/Or, get Yahoo! Mail Plus for $19.95/yr.

Edit: Oops, sorry, I SEE you have Yahoo! Mail Plus.  Looks like YPOPS would be worth trying.  Hi,

I have yahoo store email and hence it's a paid version. As of now Yahoo doesn't have any functionality to download the emails in sub-folders to outlook. I have spent few hours to make Oukook work in conjunction with Ypops! but was left unsuccessful. Look slike Ypops! developers stopped working on Ypops!.

INCOMING mail server is: pop.bizmail.yahoo.com
Outgoing mmail server is: smtp.bizmail.yahoo.com

As per Ypops! instructions I have changed both of them to 127.0.0.1 in outlook and also selected 127.0.0.1 under "Network" tab in Ypops! but no success.

My outlook failed to work with the above settings and once I change them back to the original (pop.bizmail & smtp.bizmail) it works.

Please let me know if you have any ideas on how to configure Outlook and Ypops! so that they both can talk to eachother and work in conjunction.

Thanks
B!Any chance of switching to gmail?  It can be configured for POP and/or IMAP.  I've experimented a bit, setting up IMAP and synchronizing the email messages between gmail and Outlook Express.  I've observed that, if I CREATE a new folder in gmail and create a folder of exactly the same name in OE, I can tell OE to Synchronize and it works.  The contents of the online folder and the folder in OE will be matched.

Solve : Firefox CPU useage?

Answer»

I understand about Firefox's useage of memory and how it continues to grow ( thanks BC).

Every now and then the CPU useage goes through the roof.  Even when all of the tabs I've got open are on sites that don't do continuous updates.

I've got FF 3.6 b4 and I don't think it is a version or beta problem since I've I have read about this same problem on Mozilla's site with several previous versions.

I should add that I have done AV and spyware scans.

Any ideas?I'd try installing an earlier version to a different folder (you can always delete it later and just keep the new version) and see if you have the same problem. If you don't, you can narrow the problem down to the version. If you do, it's something else. Also, I assume you've tried other browsers (IE, Opera, whatever) and do NOT have this problem, correct?DLoad and install SpeedyFox.Allan

The problem happens after FF has been running for several days ( my machine is on 24/7).  I've got all the other browsers but never leave them running for that long, so no I haven't seen it in the other browsers.  When FF does start to max out CPU useage I reboot and everythings fine for a week or so.  I remember reading that you turn off your systems every night so you probably will never see the issue since you have a fresh reboot everyday.

Patio

Just DOWNLOADED Speedyfox so I'll see what happens.Okay, but same question. What happens with an earlier version of Firefox? And is there some reason you must use Firefox if that's the only browser causing the problem? In reading through the posts on Mozilla's Q & A site there were a number of posts with the same problems for several earlier versions like 3.0 something.

To me a browser is kind of a personal thing and for reasons I don't fully understand or can't put into words I just like FF.  Why do some people love broccoli and others hate it?

And I should reboot once a week anyway.Okay. As you point out, I do SHUT down daily - plus my primary browser is IE, so I've never encountered these problems. But if you're sure they are not unique to your system and you are comfortable putting up with them I guess that's fine And I absolutely AGREE about browsers. I have all of them installed but invariably always come back to IE - just what I'm comfortable with - so I understand your choice to stay with Firefox. It's because FireFox makes large usage of SQL and it is not HANDLED properly with regular memory/cache flushing....SpeedyFox addresses this...
When you see things getting sluggish you fire it up and it takes all of 6 seconds. It may be also some faulty add-on(s).
We're aware that FF is pretty RAM hungry, but it shouldn't be eating CPU cycles.

Close Firefox. Go Start>All Programs>Mozilla Firefox, click on Mozilla Firefox (safe mode). Same thing?Broni, just to let you know I took your advice and have been running FF in safe mode for a couple of days now with no problems.  But sometimes it would run a week in regular mode before it would act up.  I'll let you know.I'll be around

Solve : Create a bookmark to login???

Answer»

How do I create a bookmark that will login to the site automatically for me? Ive tried logging in and then creating the bookmark, but it doesnt work...HuH ? ?

What browser for starters...Internet explorer. I want  to be able to make a bookmark that will log me into certain sites auomatically with my login. I know it can be done because I have one already that I pulled off a tool for my work, but I have no idea how they made it. It would save me time from logging in each time if I could just click the BM and be ready to use. Can't you just use cookies?I dont think that would work. Cookies are automatically deleted by IT here anyways...BOOKMARKS only store the URL. there is no special power to have login credentials or anything included. It simply can't be done. A bookmark is only a link to page. A cookie stores login details like your USERNAME and password.Well, let me take a GUESS. At home you don't have the same in environment. At home you have cookies enabled and you save passwords in your browser and you bookmark things. Here on the CH login there is an option to keep you logged in. So, you probably checked that also.   Quote

Well no, only because with these certain sites I login to there is no way to stay logged in. So maybe I can save the cookie after logging in? Would that work like a bookmark if I dragged it to my start menu for example? Quote

What TYPE of sites are we talking about? Bank sites?

No, you don't create cookies, the browser does. There is nothing to drag and drop. No they're not secure sites like a bank site. They're sites I use as tools for work. But everytime I need to use them I have to login and since Im trouble shooting over the PHONE it would make my life easier if I could figure out how they (I dont know who they are) made the one bookmark that I have.maybe it's in the URL.

Solve : Internet Explorer not working for some sites?

Answer»

Basic information:

I have Internet Explorer 8
I have a Windows Vista Computer
I delete files that I no longer need or want to keep (so that my computer runs faster)
I've disabled my Windows Sidebar
I have Google Toolbar, and Google is my homepage
I have TREND Micro Internet Security, HijackThis, Windows Defender
I think my Internet is provided by Verizon
I have a Sony VAIO laptop
I have a few other ISSUES with my computer

Problem description:

So what's happening is my internet is nice and (thank goodness) speedy, working like a charm. And then, I click on a link and - BOOM!  I get this "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". What IS this? And the address bar says: res://C:\Windows\system32\shdoclc.dll/navcancl.htm
I don't know what to do...I've installed HijackThis and ran a scan a few seconds ago, here's the log:

Help would be appreciated.

You can try DOWNLOADING JavaRa which will remove older versions of Java from your system http://sourceforge.net/projects/javara/files/javara/JavaRa/JavaRa.zip/download

I think this error may mean that either you need to be logged into the COMPUTER as an admin or your Browser Security settings are set WRONG for the game to run.

Solve : My internet connection is super slow all of the sudden?

Quote from: roccenstein on DECEMBER 15, 2009, 08:43:53 AM

I use AT&T dsl service, with a Speedstream modem, but it shouldn't make a difference which brand of dsl modem I replace it with, right?

When my modem failed I couldn't find any retail modem that worked with AT&T (Bellsouth) I think it MAY vary with whatever REGION you are in. They will replace a dead modem for free though(may have to use Patio's tactic). It LOOKS like this issue has been resolved but I  just wanted to point this out in case ANYONE else with a similar issue happens upon this thread at a later time.

Anyone know where to GET the beta release of Flash Player for 64 bit WINDOWS platforms?

I was here, then I clicked over to Adobe Labs and couldn't seem to find it.

Why do you want the beta? The latest stable version works fine.I didn't know there was a "latest stable" version.

According to the link I posted, you can only get the beta.... maybe they just haven't updated the web page yet

Actually that's what I meant to say...  So it runs on 64bit windows but not on the 64 bit browsers.. gotcha Quote

Yes!

If you're running a 64 bit version of Windows, which I assume you are, then you will see "Internet Explorer (64 bit)" in All PROGRAMS. Flash player will not work with this, but will with the normal version of IE.Cool!  I didn't even notice the 64 bit IE in "All Programs"

I assumed that installing the Vista 64 would automatically use a 64 bit IE browser.  I read that when using 64 bit OSs you have to use 64 bit programs, but I didn't consider that 32 bit apps. can run on 64 bit OSs so I got confused..

In your main HDD, you will see a "Program Files (x86)" folder - that's where 32 bit apps are kept. 64 bit apps are stored in the normal Program Files folder.good tip...    thxmore then you want to know about x64 file/registry redirection Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 18, 2009, 09:54:56 AM

Solve : Can YouTube be displayed on a 56K or 128K connection with Opera 10?

Answer»

On my Laptop, I am DOWNLOADING Opera for a faster Internet Experence from Internet Explorer and I need to know if Opera can display YOUTUBE on a 56 or 128K without stopping to buffer in the middle of the video?no matter what browser you use you will have to let it buffer on a SLOW connection like that. sorry. You'll need to buffer, regardless of the type of internet connection you have.

It does not matter what KIND of internet browser you are using. It's all the same.

But the speed at which video buffers depends on internet speed. Apparently, faster speed means you don't need to wait as long for the buffering. And also, file size of video matters a lot too.

56 or 128K is relatively slow. I'm using a 768K DSL modem, and although it's slow, it's tolerable compared to 56K or 128K and on many a video, I still need to have the video loaded/buffered completely before I can watch without having to wait.

A faster (allegedly i may add ) browser will not ASSIST buffering in any way shape or form.

Solve : My laptop won't connect to wifi- says to verify proxy server??

Answer»

I am trying to connect to the wifi at starbucks. I've tried severAl different locAtions with wifi and no luck so far! When I clicked "DIAGNOSE the problem, it said "verify the current proxy server configuration." I followed the help and support my laptop gave me but I'm now stuck. I went to tools, then INTERNET options, then LAN settings. But now I have no clue what to do!!!! Help!!!!Proxy servers serve as the middle man between the Internet and your COMPUTER.
Obtain the proxy server settings you need to use.
Open your browser window
Choose "Tools" from your browser’s menu section.
Click "Internet Options" and open the "Connections" tab
Choose "LAN Settings" to open a new window..
Verify the "Use a Proxy Server for your LAN" BOX is checked and that the address and port match the settings you obtained in Step 1. If you have a script instead of an address and port, be sure the script address is ENTERED under "Automatic Configuration." Also, be sure the check box for "Use Automatic Configuration Script" is checked. Click "OK" to finish.

Solve : problem composing emails?

Answer»

Sometimes when I am composing an email the text I am typing in does not come up on the screen immediately. I might have to wait about a minute before it appears. It only happens occasionally but it is most disconcerting. I have Windows 98 and am using Firefox and Yahoo Mail.I reported this problem last November when it was very bad. For some reason it went away but now it is back. I cannot think of anything that I have done that may have affected the situation. I notice that there is a message down at the left hand  bottom of the screen to the effect that data is being transferred from some online source. Is that causing the hold up and can I stop it?I think this is in part due to you using web email rather than software on your own computer. Hence, when you are using Yahoo it is randomly transferring data on/off the web. This uses up your limited resources. I would suggest an alternative is to use Outlook Express or Thunderbird for you email software. That way you don't need to have any web TRAFFIC until you are ready to send your mail. The other thing that occurs to me is to pre-type your email in your text editor and just copy/paste it into yahoo.Thank you dude1234 for those comments. The problem varies appreciably for some reason.  I have had little trouble today, although it is happening with this note. The problem seems to get worse during the day. I previously used Word to produce my emails and then copy to Yahoo compose. Many of these emails became distorted when posted to group sites. I often use Outlook Express but I use Firefox most of the time and go to Yahoo Mail for the email in and out. Quote

I often use Outlook Express but I use Firefox most of the time and go to Yahoo Mail for the email in and out.
If you have a free Yahoo Mail, you're not using Outlook Express for it because it doesn't work with OE.  So, you use OE for another email account, right? That is correct. I use a different email address for OE. However, I have used Yahoo Mail and my yahoo email address for many years but the problem has only emerged in recent times. Is it that Yahoo Mail now puts sufficient load on my computer that it is slow to respond to my input? At times, I have to wait  about ten SECONDS before what I typed appears on the screen. This response varies in no apparent fashion apart from the fact that it appears to get worse during the day. I am not having any problem at the moment.Get ThunderBird...did i mention it's FREE ? ?I have accumulated many folders containing past emails in Yahoo Mail. I would be loathe to change to Thunderbird for that reason as it would mean swapping back to Yahoo Mail to FIND past emails. Is there some way I can switch off the the Yahoo Mail processing that is slowing down my computer so drastically? Or is it something else that has caused this problem to emerge? Quote from: denisaf on April 19, 2010, 08:37:44 PM

I believe you can't use Thunderbird for Yahoo Mail any more than you can use Outlook Express for it.  Yahoo Mail is not a POP mail account; it's a webmail type of email account.

Well, do you need to keep Yahoo Mail open all the time?  If not, then just close it.

By the way, tell us more about your computer (processor, RAM, etc.).   Since you're using Windows 98, what version of Firefox are you using? I am using Firefox 2.0.0.20 which, if I remember correctly, is the last version that can be used with Windows 98SE. The computer has 192 MB RAM and a 74.5 GB disk. I cannot remember how to find out what the processor is!I've got a suggestion how you can interrupt the web activity while you draft up your message in Yahoo. Actually 2 suggestions. (i) In your Firefox main menu - go to file - then click on "work offline". When you are ready to send mail just change back to "work online". (ii) Install Zone Alarm software (freebee) and when you are ready to compose your mail, just hit the "lock" button and that will lock-out all web activity.

Whatcha think?Thank you dude1234. That seems to be a very useful suggestion. I will try the first one and then report back. I will give a day or so to be certain.Try Google's gmail.  I believe you'll find it faster than Yahoo! Mail.  gmail can also be POP3-enabled so that you can use Outlook Express for it.I was looking at a way of over coming the problem without having to change my routine too much as I am old. I know that there are many possible improvements if I were to go to the trouble of learning about them and implementing them. Going to gmail could well lead to an improvement in future operations but are hardly worth the transition from my PRESENT routine. Thank you for helping but going offline seems to be solving my problem.clicking on Work Offline in Files of Firefox when I want to enter text appears to work, then clicking on it again when I want to get back online. I have no response problems since I have employed it over the past days. Thank you again, dude1234

Solve : Intermittent loss of Internet?

Answer»

HI,

This is my first post and I hope I can get some help.

First of all, I can generally get on the internet & Email, but after about 10-15~ minutes I lose connectivity.
I then have to do one of the following:
1.) restart the computer (sometimes this works)
2.) reset my IP on command prompt (generally this works)
but again, after several minutes, I lose connectivity.

What's been done:
I contacted my ISP (I have a DSL line), they checked out everything and everything on their end is OK, however, for customer satisfaction, they replaced my modem with a brand new one, as of yesterday,
but, alas, I continue to have the same problem.  Before the ORIGINAL installation of the DSL, I had my house
rewired, so everything up to the computer is OK.

I have a Dell XPS-600 about 4 years old
Windows XP Service pack 3 (I use auto UPDATES)
Dual processor, Pentium D 3 G Hz
2 Gig Ram
250 Gig HD
I believe all my DRIVERS are current and up to date.

Any suggestions, short of buying a new computer WOULD be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

KapSixDid this just start or has it always been this way?
Try a "clean boot" (msconfig - selective startup - uncheck everything). Does it still happen?Allen,

Thanks for the speedy reply, the only thing I have on selective start up is my virus suite.
I have always been running my comp that way and yes it continues to happen.

SOMETIMES it stops on the loading window during boot up. sometimes it opens the WAY it should. well, it still opens. so there. until yesterday, IE8 wont open. opens a window, then closes immediately. i tried running it as an administrator but it gives me a pop up window that says

this application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more INFORMATION.

(Please try to debug the application)

What am I supposed to do?

and by the way, firefox is working.

thanks.Start with...

Go Start>Run ("Start SEARCH" in Vista/7), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (hold CTRL, and SHIFT, hit Enter in Vista/7).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy (with Vista/7, most likely, you won't need it).
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD (rarely in Vista/7 case).

I cant seem to let Silverlight work in Opera (have NEW version 10.5) it didnt work before either...have heard a lot of people who have the same PROBLEM and of course Opera doesnt answer....but maybe one of you guys and gals do...
W7, Opera, AVG, Asus 4.2Ghz, 4 gigs RAM, only freeware as software, NO MS....except for the W7 of course Well, ACCORDING to this article, Why Silverlight does not support Opera, Opera is not officially supported by Microsoft's Silverlight. But, the article ALSO hints support for Opera may be forthcoming. So, I think you may have to deal with some issues if trying to use Silverlight in Opera until Microsoft decides to officially include Opera as a supported browser.

Solve : Add-On Problem?

Answer»

Whenever I open my Internet Explorer browser, I get the following:

Internet Explorer is currently running without add-ons.

It gives me 3 options: (1) manage, (2) disable, or (3) remove the add-ons.  I can't seem to get IE working properly and don't know how to solve this problem!  I click on "manage" add-ons but from there I have tried everything and can't seem to get my toolbars installed and get the program running the way it should. I keep getting the same prompts over and over.

Please advise...What's your IE version? Have you gone to "enable" Yahoo Toolbar under Add-ons?
I'M using IE8.

I can't find yahoo toolbar under add-ons.  However, I have a yahoo search BOX that works at the top of my explorer page.  Right-click the shortcut you are using to open IE8 and go properties...

Under the target look for -extoff and remove it if it's there:
eg. "C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"  -extoff
to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

That -extoff parameter will force add-ons to be turned off.

If that's not the case, then ONE or more of your add-ons is probably CORRUPTED or causing an issue that it won't start.

In IE8, go under Tools > Manage Add-ons...
Under the Show tab select All Add-ons...

Temporary disable any add-ons with (not verified) in the title.
Temporary disable java, flash and shockwave plug-ins. Your probably find it's Java causing the issue.

Restart IE8.

If working, re-enable one by one TILL you found the problem plugin and clean re-install that if needed.
Brilliant assistance!  Thanx.  DELETING the extoff did the trick!

Solve : IE8 web page printing problems?

Answer»

Windows XP with IE8
On a web page, eg this ONE, if l select the the down arrow next to the print icon, and then print preview, all that is shown is the header and FOOTER with nothing in between, hence nothing is printing.
Yet before, l could see the complete web page which was to come out on the printer.
Is there a seting that should be altered somewhere? On every web SITE or just one in particular? Have you tried printing to see if the page actually prints? What is different or new since the last TIME it worked properly?Blimey Allen that was quick!
It's every website, and the print preview just shows the headers and FOOTERS, and that is just what is getting printed.
Print Preview was working fine a couple of days ago and nothing has changed as far as l know.
Have done all the usual scans and nothing untowards has crept in!Okay, just as a test what happens with other browsers (pick one - Firefox, Opera, Safari, Chrome)?

Solve : Internet Toolbar Problem etc?

Answer»

Just recently downloaded Kaspersky onto a Windows XP computer, However computer was running very SLOW with it so I decided to delete the programme. After using CC cleaner it pulled up a range of things including a few DSL files? saying something like disconnected, so I deleted them all and now my Internet Explorer does not have afavoritess bar, I cannot copy and paste, I cannot access the Internet Options in control panel either, when clicking it it pops up slightly then doesn't show. When trying to use Ctrl and F4 that also seems to do nothing. In an internet explorer it USUALLY tells you what web page you are on through the tabs, yet after deleting the files it does not.

Yes I have tried system restore, restarting yet it all seems to do nothing. I even created a new user account, when opening that account it starts up like normal - and attempts to install internet explorer 8 and delete the old one, yet when doing so a loud bang noise happens and we return to the start up mode and the two user accounts again.

What am I supposed to do now? Please Help!    1) STOP USING REGISTRY CLEANERS. All you had to do was uninstall with ADD/REMVOE. Not only that, if Kaspersky products are slowing your system I'd be more concerned with your system than Kaspersky - it's one of the best products available and hardly taxes the system at all - especially when properly configured.

2) Boot to your XP CD and do a repair install (choose the SECOND repair option). After the repair, be sure to go to Windows Update and download and install all UPDATES. Quote from: zoecowlx on August 12, 2010, 02:01:12 PM

Well, don't blame all that on CCleaner.  I've used CCleaner for years and it simply won't cause those problems.  I believe you probably have numerous issues going on with your computer.  I'd proceed with Allan's advice regarding a repair install. Quote from: soybean on August 13, 2010, 11:17:58 AM

ANY registry cleaner can cause problems - even ccleaner. Just because most people don't have problems doesn't mean others won't too. There is no reason at all to use ANY registry cleaner, no matter how benign. And other than contradicting me, what is the purpose of your post? Quote from: Allan on August 13, 2010, 03:55:57 PM

He never used a registry cleaner, first off.ccleaner has a registry cleaning MODULE and I am under the impression that the OP used that. perhaps I'm mistaken, but that's how I read his post. Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 13, 2010, 10:54:37 PM

Solve : increase or decrease text size?

Answer»

Just a quick NOTICE to anyone who is having trouble with to large or to small icons on the TOOLBAR,in the firefox BROWSER, and there not been a to obvious way to change them. If you go to the address box and type in about:config this will bring you to a warning box, but carry on, as the warning says, please be careful. In the box type layout c.s.s.devpixels.perpx. Right click on it, and you will be able to modify the number from the figure it is now, ,probs -1, and change it to 1.0. If this is still not big enough, go up in 0.1 increments, and that should do the trick. HOPE this helpsMethod 1 - change default TEXT size:
Tools > Options > Content > Fonts and Colours > Size

Method 2 - keyboard shortcut:
Increase: CTRL and +
Decrease: CTRL and -Method Three...

CTRL and mouse scroll wheel.

Solve : Chinese to me?

Answer»

Hi
I've been having a LITTLE tinker with the registry lately, having come across a few tips on making my lappy a bit FASTER. I don't know if that's been the course, but a few web sites I open up I just get a page full of chinese writing, no images or anything, just the writing. I'm also UNABLE to install any updates. as I keep getting the error code 8007064c, I dont know wether this also has contributed to my situation. oh....im running Vista.Did you back up the registry before editing? The registry is a DANGEROUS place to "tinker".

Can you cite one of those websites that displays Chinese writing?  I'm skeptical that any registry tinkering would have caused that.
