Solve : Firefox NOT remembering login details?

Answer»

In Firefox 2.0.0.20 (the latest version that will work in WinMe), the username and password for Virgin WEBMAIL is prompted, but the identical information for an identical login form for Virgin Broadband USAGE is NOT prompted; and the settings for REMEMBERING the login details are ineffective FOR THIS SITE. I have TRACKED differences between these sites to differences in 'Page Info' in Firefox's Tools menu, but I cannot change the Page Info for USAGE to be the same as for WEBMAIL.
I have failed to trigger login details prompting by 'artificially' adding them to the stored passwords list. Can someone help me make Firefox prompt the login details for USAGE as it does for WEBMAIL ?Did you check settings of firefox?
You should select to remember history and bookmark from tools.
Another reason, if your firefox is portable , there is possibility that it won't remember login details

Links Removed...no advertising.      isn t it a good thing that it does not remember login details ?
have you clicked on Private browsing?
go to tools click stop private browsing.I'm not sure how exactly, but I KNOW that PayPal uses some script which stops the browser from remembering the username and password. Maybe something SIMILAR is in use here.Does it remember login details for this forum and various other non-secure (http, not https) websites? Quote from: http://support.mozilla.com/tiki-view_forum_thread.php?locale=en-US&comments_parentId=607325&forumId=1

Some sites (e.g. PayPal, Yahoo, Windows Live and bank sites) use autocomplete="off" to prevent Firefox from saving the name and the password.
The first reply (where I got the quote from) has some pretty good info and links you might want to look at. Quote from: wickedking on August 20, 2010, 08:19:02 AM

In Firefox 2.0.0.20, I found 'Remember what I enter in forms and the search bar' UNticked in Tools menu; OPTIONS; Privacy; but placing a tick for that improved nothing. I KNOW that bookmarks are 'remembered' because I use a bookmark to access Virgin Broadband Usage. Whether this Firefox is portable is beyond my knowledge and experimentation. My problem in Firefox 2.0.0.20 is just on this PC. In any case it does remember login details for all websites except Virgin Broadband Usage - most notably it remembers my SAME login details as for Usage in an identical login screen for Virgin Webmail. It DOES remember login details for all other websites, just not for the one I want it to remember login details for - namely Virgin Broadband Usage.
So your question 'is not applicable'.

I can't find any reference to Private Browsing. There is 'Private Data' and that entails the OPPOSITE of what I want for the login details of Virgin Broadband Usage. "Always clear my private data when I close Firefox." is NOT ticked. Quote from: kpac on August 20, 2010, 09:46:28 AM

I suspect you are right. I pointed that out to a SUPERVISOR at the Virgin Helpdesk, referencing the fact that the same login screen is used by Webmail, and those login details ARE remembered (and prompted), but the supervisor was adamant that it is a browser and NOT a website issue. I strongly disagree with him - we parted on terms less than 'cordial'.  Quote from: soybean on August 20, 2010, 10:56:47 AM

Sure does, and more PARTICULARLY it remembers the identical details for an identical login screen for Virgin Webmail. Quote from: Helpmeh on August 20, 2010, 08:02:25 PM

I have previously come across the <> idea. I could not find 'autocomplete' anywhere in this Firefox 2.0.0.20 The recommended solution is to use a 'bookmarklet' - that failed to solve my problem. I will look at the URL you refered me to - thank you for that.

Solve : Cannot open video clips?

Answer»

Hi to everyone, firstly, sorry if this is POSTED in the wrong section.
Can someone help me?, when I click a VIDEO CLIP on a website, i just get the message 'internet explorer cannot display the webpage', i can right click and save TARGET as, and watch it that way, put its a pain, anyone know please?

thanks for your timeProbably the quickest way to solve this issue would be to uninstall your current version of IE and then reinstall it (you don't mention what version you are using--probably version . Another option is to download another browser such as mozilla firefox /opera/chrome and SEE if that works ok. Depending on your insistence on using IE as your browser that could be an alternative solution.truenorth

Solve : Cant get into a website.?

Answer»

Hey everyone,

I'm tryin to get into this site and up until a couple of WKS ago I was able to do so but then for some reason, I stopped getting access to it.

The OOPS msg would appear, was told to delete my website history (cache & cookies) but it didnt make a difference in fact now the oops msg doesnt come up, just a blank white page.

Ps. I have checked on another computer to see whether the site is workin and it is....

Any help?? Just one website? What happens if you use a different browser (Firefox, Opera, Safari, etc)? And which website is it?Yeah I downloaded firefox to see if it would work with that but had the same problem.

It's a university website-www.uhs.edu.pkIs the other computer (the one that works) at the same location as yours and using the same ISP?Yeh it's in the same HOUSE, the only difference is that i use a usb which provides me with internet whereas the other comp uses a modem....there was a similar post online i read lately about a .edu site and they had to TAKE the www. off the link in order to get it to work.

That being said I can't access it either.

but I also can't get to ati.amd.com RIGHT now either

Thank you for your responses Broni.  But I do not have any expertise to do that on one computer and copy it onto a disk and then take it this computer to send it to you. I am "lost". But thank you for responding.I was hoping I could just add a new DSL connection/connector I guess.  Since it says I no longer have one.We don't really know, what the problem is, yet?
Do you have USB flash DRIVE (can borrow)?
Most LIKELY, you'll need one, not only to transfer those text files to working computer, but, eventually, to transfer some repair tools from working computer to bad computer. There is a drive (USB) but I do not have the thing to put in. I have CD/DVD on each machine and so could copy from one machine onto a disk and then load that onto the other machine. I think.

I tried my provider and they charged me $75 to sign up for "help" service, but did not help. They want to send out a tech for $154 additional but still will not guarantee to fix it! If you have CDRW disk (not CDR), that will work.
Otherwise, I'd invest 10-15 bucks to buy USB flash drive. Believe me, it'll come handy on many occasions. It is CD-RW. Both machines.

DVD/R/W/RAMI'm not talking about drives themselves.
I'm talking about about disks, you put into them.
CDs come in two flavors: CDR (you can write to them once) and CDRW (re-writable).
I don't want you to WASTE your money, by using CDR disks, because once you write something to them, you can't write again anymore.

Bottom line, USB flash drive would be the best solution.I have 15-20 DVD-R disks.  I have no problems using them.Well, if so, follow instruction from my reply #1, transfer logs to a CD, move the CD to good computer and post logs back.

Make sure, you type those commands EXACTLY as they're (including spaces), or it won't work (CD wasted). Quote from: Celamanka on August 23, 2010, 01:24:22 PM

So, we're talking about two computers, both using the same DSL service, right?  I think we're missing some relevant details here.  Please elaborate on your computing environment as it relates to Internet access.

Solve : Firefox wants to remember my password but in the wrong location?

Answer»

I first POSTED this MESSAGE for help in the Mozilla Firefox forum last April and again there a few days ago with no help forthcoming so I thought I would try here for help .

Firefox WANTS to remember my password for YouTube. But it wants to remember it on the Google.com website.

When I do it that way, it ties together Google and YouTube in ways I don't prefer.

I want to keep Google and YouTube as separate as possible.

Therefore I want to find someway to get Firefox to remember my YouTube password on YouTube.com--not Google.com.

How do I do this?

I ask for Firefox to remember it this way because I notice when I look at my current password list that all of them seem to be remembered on the names of their websites (for example: my ebay password is asked by Firefox to be remembered at ebay.com).

Thanks.

I realize Google bought YouTube and now owns them.  However, I think there should be a way to get Firefox to do something different in remembering where to store a password RATHER than just simply storing it where Firefox tells me to store it.

Why does Firefox have to tell me where to store a password anyway?  Can't I tell it where I want to store a password?  If so, how?

Thanks and I await any replies.

Solve : Hotmail folders?

Answer»

When my wife signs on to her hotmail account (either on my desktop or her laptop), she can read any of the messages in her in-box.  However if she TRIES to go into any of her saved emails, the screen goes blank and the status bar SHOWS "view.at.dmt" and then just hangs.  If I go into my hotmail account I have no problems viewing my saved emails.  It seems to be something connected to her hotmail account.  I cannot find a way of contacting the hotmail team direct (they just have forums).
Has ANYONE else had this problem and is there a way to resolve it?Please clarify something. What's the difference between "messages in her in-box" and "her saved emails"?  My wife has created her own folders, family, friends etc.  So she can view any NEW messages in her in box, but when she clicks on one of the folders she has created, the contents is shown for about a second and then the dreaded view.at.dmt STARTS.

Solve : "Server Cannot be Found" Sometimes?

Answer»

I have a home network and 3 computers are connected to this system. Mine is the only ONE doing this. I am currently on another computer to type this because my browser is giving me the "Server cannot be FOUND" message. It does this recently, it just started doing this yesterday. Sometimes the browser will work, without a problem. Sometimes it will work but the pages look strange and pictures are missing and such. Sometimes it just does not work at all and will give me the "Server cannot be found" message. I look at my network, my computer is sending off a lot more packages than I am receiving.  I can not figure out what is wrong. My TCP/IP is set to automatic, I have tried a lot of things already. Things that COULD have messed it up. Yesterday, my internet provider came out, he was at my neighbors hooking up what I imagine is another network, could he have done something to MESS mine up? Also, last week I came into CONTACT with a virus, I cleaned it off and I fear that it messed something up.

Solve : Gmail Groups?

Answer»

I have just received a LARGE LIST of PROSPECTIVE members for an organization I volunteer for and I want to ADD them to a gmail group I have created.  Is there a way to add the addresses all at once, or do I have to add them one at a time?

The list was sent to me in a word document.

Thank you.My thoughts:

  • Copy those addresses from Word to Excel, getting them into a vertical list in Excel.
  • Then, save the Excel file in CSV format.
  • Import that CSV file into Gmail Contacts.

I PRESUME you would need column titles in the CSV file that would be identical to column headings that would be generated by exporting, for example, Contacts from Windows Live Mail or Outlook Express.

Solve : Website Error - This ones got my stymied?

Answer»

Hello all,

I've exhausted all of my developers friends advice on this and hope someone here can help.

I've created a site for a local CASINO about a year ago. Several months ago we initiated an online sweepstakes with a simple sign up form. We've had a few people complain that they can't get the page to load or get errors like:

The website is unable to display the webpage - HTTP 501/HTTP 505
or
Not able to COMPLETE request

The site validates and isn't on any blacklist. Ive tried on various browsers and even CHECKED them on browsershots.org and I can't get anyone to replicate the error. I'm pretty sure it's a client side issue, but I still need to know why so I can tell the casino how to answer the people who call with difficulties?

Unfortunately, I have little to no knowledge of what browsers or OS they are using, except one who said they were using IE8.

I've been through the Microsoft tech bulletins about turning off http 1.1 and it doesn't SEEM to make a difference - it works both ways.

Is there anyone that can replicate the error or give me any insight on what/what is HAPPENING here.

The site is www.gunlakecasino/sweepstake.php

Thanks in advance for any help.

Chonk
Chonk.netYour link is incorrect. Should be:
http://www.gunlakecasino.com/sweepstake.php

I'd start asking those "unlucky" people what browser\version they use.

If i click on an html file I make iE opens it.

Do I have to check or set something? If you go to Start, Set Program Access and DEFAULTS, what do you see there, particularly for default browser and default email program?  Do these settings appear under "Microsoft Windows", "Non-Microsoft", or "Custom"?  A screen print might be helpful. If IE8 is set as the default browser, the next step is to make sure that Outlook Express is set as your default email program. To do this click on Tools > Internet Options > click the Programs Tab > Set Programs > Set your default programs > and make sure that "Outlook Express" is selected as your default e-mail program.

Let us know if this fixes the issue!

I meant Process Explorer- not the firefox problem. I think we kind of got dragged off-topic there for a few posts. Absolutely no idea who caused it, not a clue at all.

Not trying to rub it in!

I had this occur again today and when checking (yeah - only taskmanager!) - one core was approx 30% and the other 60% - so not something HOGGING one core only it seems.

Interesting tho - IIRC I left IE with only two or three tabs open - and when I came back in office at some point noticed the CPU activity as high.  Hard to know what transitions it from near quiescent to super active!

IE had in fact this time pretty much locked up and showed as unresponding so - closed it and re opened.  Seems to be a function of browser stability.what about VM usage?

I encounter this problem when I leave Firefox idle on a page with javascript- I can't switch tabs or anything in the meantime either, and if I switch to something else and RETURN, it doesn't paint itself.

I don't use IE7 enough to know if it happens to me with that as well.

Personally- when that happens, it usually means I should restart Firefox. I'm sure there is a fix, and if anybody finds one, I would also like to hear it as well.Ahh yes - VM - forgot to mention that.

Well I did notice it was showing about 750Mb approx.  Setting is 2Gb min and 4Gb max.  Did not remember tho at the time to inspect HDD activity.

Your FF comment re idle on a JScript page does tie in with what I notice pretty much and IE of course is I think in essence doing same thing.  Haven't seen if Opera does it as I don't use that much any more.Try 2G min AND max... Quote from: patio on September 30, 2008, 09:00:59 AM
Try 2G min AND max...

Do you mean max unspecified?he means to change your Pagefile settings to 2G minimum and maximum- this will prevent pagefile fragmentation. While likely not the source of your problem, pagefile fragmentation is something best avoided.

But- ChrisXPPro- I was referring to the memory usage of Firefox in that WUSSY program, Task manager. In the select Columns tab, there is a "Virtual Memory Usage" selection, or something similar.

For me, right now- firefox Mem usage is around 75MB, and Firefox VM usage is 64MB...

However, your memory usage numbers may be more, irregular.Process Explorer will also give you a much more accurate reading...FREE

I voted for Firefox, i like it because of the add ons, i did use Chrome for a while, but it was getting a bit of a pain and after hearing about some security faults, decided not to use it... soo yeah... back to go old firefox )Wow, another ONE.

Solve : Major Problem With IE?

Answer»

have been having big problems with IE lately. I'm not sure if it's spyware related but i'm pulling my hair out over it. What happens is that much of the time clicking the shortcut does nothing except for start the program in the task manager only. It sits there taking up 8k or so of memory but no browser window pops up. The only way to get rid of it is to kill iexplore it in the task manager. When IE does start up it's prone to frequent freezing and sometimes it will open additional windows when I click on a bookmark or hit "search" on google. What I mean by this is my bookmarked site will open up in a new window and google search results will also open up in a new window. I've uninstalled and reinstalled IE7 and it made no difference at all.

I really need help getting IE working again. Not only does it effect browsing (which i've switched over to Firefox) but I have some applications which depend on IE. Thanks for reading and any help would be appreciated!

I'm running Windows XP, service pack 3 standard installation. No UI enhancements. System is AMD64 3ghz with 2 gig of ram, nforce 590 motherboard, nvidia 8800 graphics card w/320 meg of ram.Close IE.
Go Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, and click on Internet Explorer (no add-ons)
Same thing?I use Firefox and they have a add on that Is for IE it keeps all your FAVORITES and IE passwords and you can use it right in Firefox it is like 2 browsers in one

Hope it is ok to post the link.

Close IE.

Same thing?

Yea, the same thing happens. For a while that was working but over the past 2 weeks or so it hasn't. Same thing as when I click the explorer shortcut, nothing happens except that an iexplore process starts in task manager using around 8k or so of mem.

Thanks for the suggestion webeye but I need IE to be working.Did you make any computer changes around the time IE started acting up - new software, new hardware, new drivers?

1) Check your shortcut properties (right-click on the IE shortcut>Properties). Does it point to the correct location (mine is shown below for reference.)

2) CLEAR browser history, COOKIES and CACHE - through IE or with CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/)

3) Have you tried to reset IE? Start>Control Panel>Internet Options>Advanced Tab>Reset.

Best of luck.

Yes, I'd like to know that too. I've never had any problems with IE.Are you using Zone Alarm firewall? Awhile ago there was a conflict between a IE-7 update & the ZA firewall. I think the fix was to lower the level of security in the firewall. If you have Zone Alarm firewall installed open ZA,
Click on Program Control
Move the "slider" to Medium
Click on Firewall
Set Internet Zone Security to High
Set Trusted Zone security to Medium
save all the settings & close ZA.

There is a update to Internet Explorer that causes your problem if you have ZA installed & the Program Control is set to High.

Solve : Forum just *Disappeared*?

Answer»

Hi all,

I'm sorry I'm not really sure where to put this question so it may need shifting.

A forum that I visit regulary, last night while I was posting just vanished. When I tried to connect back to it it SAID 'Forbidden Error 403'. I tired several times, and ALSO today to get to the forum same message. I tried to get on just a few minutes ago and now it says 'Error 404 Not found'. I have tried it on different computers and browsers, and have asked other members to ATTEMPT to access it, and they say they also can't get on. I did some research and it said that the 403 error was something to do with the url, but I checked  and double checked the address was right.

Does anyone know what has happened? Has it been hacked? Why would a forum thats been up for years just suddenly go down withoput warning? if u r sure the link is correct then its not ur prblm.this is server side prblm.Try after few hours may be the site administrator will fix the prblm. As mentioned above it's likely a server related issue. I'd IMAGINE that they're just updating or changing something that's causing you to not have access to it. Is there a possiblity that it was hacked? Other sites on the same server have gone down with the same message. I can't CONTACT the administator so I have no idea if he knows. He does not go there often. What forum are you referring to?  What's the URL?Hi all

I've finally managed to contact the owner of the site. Apparently a hacker used the site to send spam so the host server took it down. Hopefully this will be resolved.

Thanks for your input.Sorry to hear about that, but I'm glad you know what's going on now.

Solve : Firefox streaming?

Answer»

This could fit in 'Web Design' and also 'other' perhaps.

Anyways - an exhaustive search thru Google has yet to satisfy me as to a real solution - nothing I found here either.

So - problem - streaming thru IE is fine - but as seems so common - Firefox just will not cut it - I presume as it has no ActiveX component.  Right now am using code below for successful results in IE ... but - anyone got any bright ideas to GET a WMV to play in FF?  Any quick fix way to get FF users to pull down what is needed?  Lots of info out there but to me - seemingly no real solution.

Code entry removed due to scrolling - see post #3 for attached file. What is not streaming in FF?
Could you also attach that code, instead of pasting it? Right now, I have to scroll half a mile to the right to see the end of your post.Sorry Broni - the dreaded horizontal scroll huh.!    I forget I am on 1680 width!

Have put that in a text file attached.

The .wmv will not stream in FF - in fact no player box comes up ..... not entirely surprising considering the activeX aspect.  This seems a common problem but not one where I have seen a definitive solution, even after considerable searching.

[recovering disk space -- attachment deleted by admin]Can you post a sample link, where it doesn't work?OK - this is one of the sites I have to work on for someone ..... the page that does OK in IE is .....

http://www.takeyourmoneyback.com/basefile/tymb-wmv-full.htm

Try that in FF and here anyways - not even a player showing.  Gotta be an ActiveX deal - and as I said earlier - this seems a very common FF problem.  This is BTW a backup - just in case folks can't use the YouTube version linked to.It plays here.
Make sure, you have Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin: http://port25.technet.com/pages/windows-media-player-firefox-plugin-download.aspx installed.
Type "about:plugins" in your address bar, you should see an entry for Microsoft Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin (File name: np-mswmp.dll)
If its there, download installation file again, close Firefox, and run the file. Select "Reapir" option.Hmm - well thx for checking - the dilemma however is - it's not my FF I am interested in - it's all the folks who may use it and want to view the vid.  Right now it seems safer to point to IE only.

I have tho downloaded that file and will try it - plus I guess I could point others to it .. but leaving that aside - gotta reckon that most FF users will possibly not want to add anything.

Thanks for the info - much appreciated. Quote

gotta reckon that most FF users will possibly not want to add anything.
This doesn't make sense. IE has plug-ins, too. FF plugins are safer, since they don't use ActiveX.
Also, the above video plays as well in FF's IE tab. What I meant Broni was - we have to assume that many browser users only want to have something come up automatically in their basic bare-bones browser.

You and I and others here - will happily use FF in ''IE mode" or download a plugin ... but there are many out there who will not or cannot do a darned thing to aid their browsing experience.  So - this is directed at ''them'' out there who might want to view that vid.

Can you see where I am comin from?

The guy I work for thinks I am talkin ''techy'' if I mention even the word ''folder'' - and it seems there are others around who have zero ability or inclination to adapt their platforms.

This was my point.

I have no automatic means in the code right now that will play the .WMV in FF .. if it is basic FF.  I was looking to see if there was any way to embed that ''fooled'' FF and achieved a successful result without the need for the user to do anything!

Yeah - I am a cynic when it comes to many web users!!  Quote
Can you see where I am comin from?
Partially yes, partially no.
Bare bone IE won't do everything, you want. To do some things, you need plugins, and add-ons.
Same with everything. You can use Wordpad, but if you want something better, you install Office.  This is hard to get across - don't think we are on same page yet!

Let me try one more shot.  Thx for patience!

So - WMV file on server - available for folks either as download or streaming.  Streaming is fine in IE but not in FF.  Knowing what many folks are like who might visit the site, it is unlikely that many at all will have plug-ins for FF if that's their browser CHOICE - they just want things to work!  So they will get zilch in FF and move on.

Therefore, right now the embed code works fine in IE but not in FF and to avoid having to give FF users any special instructions such as 'download Firefox media player plug-in' ...... my quest is to see if the embed code can be in any way tweaked to make streaming function in a base level FF.

I rather doubt this is possible judging by my fairly exhaustive searches but - still wondering none the less.Chris
Let's put it this way.
If someone buys a computer, and one wants to use it as is, fine. One's computer power will be just limited.
If someone wants little bit more out of one's computer, he/she has to keep computer updated. That includes plugins.
Secondly, Firefox works in different way, than IE.
IE comes with bunch of stuff, you like, or not. You can't even uninstall anything.
Firefox comes as a base. You want to make it better, you have tons of choices. That why, I like Firefox.
Besides WMP is M$ application, and it took quiet a battle to force M$ to issue .wmv plugin. It couldn't be done without M$ approval.Thx Broni - I am with you TOTALLY - particularly re the MSoft angle.

Remember, this is not for me and my own IE and FF (I keep FF a tad basic for test purposes - so it reflects what many "ordinary" folks might have, as against many of us here who add all useful stuff).  I want sometimes to simulate what the uninitiated out there might get functionally.

This whole problem is directed at ''them'' out there - the seemingly so many computer illiterate folks who barely know how to drag and drop, let alone store their files sensibly!!  Try to get them to fetch a useful download and APPLY it ... well, might as well ask them for their genetic code!!

It has become apparent over time, not only the site I pointed you at, but also others I manage - that Joe Sixpack wants immediate gratification with no effort or ATTEMPT to upgrade his system or add useful plugins.  it is because of this that I seek a way to pre-empt a problem by perhaps a code fix.

Anyways - thx for your feedback - always appreciated dude.  Any time

Solve : Can't log in to certain websites, tried everything I can think of.?

Answer»

On my parents laptop (which I never use unless I have to) I can't log in to certain websites like reddit, digg, shuttercal, and a few others. There's no error message, I just end up getting REDIRECTED to the homepage over and over again WITHOUT being logged in. I've tried using Firefox, IE, and Chrome, but it makes no difference. I cleared the cache and deleted all the cookies again, with no difference. Restarting the computer does nothing, and it was recently defragged. What REALLY stumps me is that I am able to log into other websites like Gmail, my bank account, and Livejournal.

The computer is pretty old-ish, I think my parents bought it in 2002, it's an HP laptop that runs Windows XP. Anyone have any ideas as to what is going on and if/how I can fix it?

EDIT: Also, I've tried accessing the sites I can't log into through a proxy, but that doesn't work either. It could be parental controls.

It's not your computer, we won't help you circumvent it.It's not parental controls. First of all, I'm 19. Second of all, the pages themselves aren't BLOCKED, it's just when I try to log in that I get redirected over and over again to the main page. There's no 'Enter password to access site' window that pops up or 'Page X blocked for Reason Y' page, and I don't see why parental controls would block something like Reddit or Shuttercal (a photo sharing site). ask your parents if they put any security software that blocks certain sites or whether they have enabled anything that may be blocking you from going to sites.. If there's no such thing, and you're allowed to use the computer, then we'll try to help fix that problem.

With parental control software, one can block websites so that little kids can't accidentally go there. And so if Shuttercal or Reddit is blocked that way, then yeah it could. But I don't know about the parental controls coming with vista though.
No, there are no parental controls/security software, and I have permission to use this computer. Can you find anti-virus websites? What firewall do you have?Okay just as an update: I figured out what was wrong. My mom installed CA Security Center on the computer which is an unbelievably *censored* program. I disabled the firewall, and that solved pretty much every problem I was having with the internet on this computer. Quote

Yeah, MS dropped IE for Macintosh in 03. But you can still download Wine, like someone said, and then download this

and you can get Ie on linux or mac . I tried it, it works on Ubuntu I know.

If you do not want to download this

Solve : Disappearing Navigation Bar Icons?

This occasionally HAPPENED in the past and I never knew what to do, I just RECENTLY discovered this uncheck, check thing.

Why does it happen?  Is there some setting somewhere else I need to check?  If you click help-->about, what version of IE does it tell you that you're running? Quote from: Starwind51 on July 29, 2009, 09:28:45 PM

I think your problem lies with IE8. Therefore, I'd downgrade to IE7 if I were you.

Out of curiosity, why would you suggest that? Quote from: Quantos on July 28, 2009, 05:21:18 PM

I haven't had an issue with it.  I do a lot of 'casual browsing'.

You asked me a question, I answered it.I'm trying to get a reason from you.

Something other than just an opinion. When I tried IE 8 on my Win XP system awhile back, it as very sluggish.  Be fore installing it, I watched video my Microsoft portraying IE 8 as fast, even faster than Firefox as I recall.  WOW, was that video wrong!  I removed it.  I've seen some complaints about it in forums; so, some users, even though perhaps a very small percentage of them, seem to have encountered problems.     It lasted less than a day on my machine.

I use FireFox 98% of the time anyways...Only 98% Pat?  Fer shame!

(Only time I use IE is when some £$%£$& stupid web designer hasn't had the wit to create a standards compliant web site and even then I'm cursing IE and the web designer all the £$%£$% way.)

Solve : Totally non-sense making crazy laptop problem?

Answer»

First, hello!
Now, to my crazy problem.
This morning when i went to sign into windows LIVE messenger, i got an error code saying i couldn't sign in because of my firewall blah blah blah internet connection blah blah blah.
So I checked the internet connection, and its fine... until i TRY and sign into anything. As soon as i click "log in" on hotmail, yahoo, myspace, facebook, you name it, it comes up saying internet explorer cannot display this page. The same is true on goggle chrome and firefox.
I've turned off my firewall, turned off all the PROTECTION i have, changed my internet settings, done everything the windows live messenger help section told me to regarding that error, restarted my laptop, restarted my modem and router......
And nothing.
HELP ME BEFORE I KILL MY LAPTOP PLEASE  Are your windows updates up to date? ........What firewall is USED?.............If you get another error code make a note of it.
Updates are current, firewall is windows defender but its off now... the error code for windows live messenger is 80048820 and thats the only error code i've gotten all dayUnless you've done so already have a look here...

http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/Logon/code/code_80048820.htm

This is a common error.

Google 80048820...tons of hits.......Avoid the sponsored links on the rt hand side of the Google search page ...... they are unsafe.....Don't run without a firewall. The only thing on there i havent done is changed the time.... which i'm now working on doing.
But still, i cant view any secure websites on my laptop.....Windows Defender is not a firewall.
Why did you change time??Windows firewall then, whatever its called.
I changed the time because it was a few minutes off and apparently that can mess up msn.
Also, since yesterday I've reformatted my hard drive, and it still has the same problem, so maybe its something with my internet? But the other computers on the network are working fine....

Solve : Internet video pauses continuously?

Answer»

Over the last two days whenever I try playing an internet video(i.e. video from YOUTUBE etc.) it pauses continuously and keeps buffering.  This is the first time it has done this.  Also, SOFTWARE updates over the internet are taking much longer.

I have DSL.  I've CONTACTED my ISP and they have checked the line and the line appears to be working properly.  I've rebooted the modem.  It's not contact to a router.

I'm using Windows Vista and Internet explorer 7.  However regardless what ever internet browser I use I have same problems.  I tried Google Chrome and SAFARI.  I have same problems with playing video lately.

I don't have any file sharing software, gaming software.  I just have the basic software that came with the computer.  I don't download files, games etc.  I just pretty much use computer for instant messaging or surfing the web occassionally.

I have two Gigabytes of RAM.  I have not had any problems before up until a couple days ago so.  I have not loaded any new programs etc.  I did a system restore back until 7/3 just in case there might have been some software updates that caused the problem but after doing the restore problem still existed.

I was going to reinitialize my hard drive and then reload everything but didn't want to do that until I could see if there is something else that might be the problem.
Try reinstalling Flash Player. One thing to check is that your modem isn't 'flapping'.  That means appearing to work one minute and refusing connections the next minute.

This is fairly common.I wonder if your modem is dying? Or perhaps getting too hot? That's what happened to me and I was getting the intermittent problem like the one you reported. And when I bought a new modem to replace the old one, all problems went away!  What type of connection do you have ? ? Quote

I have DSL
Who is your ISP?
Do you you know what bandwidth you are paying for? This might have changed. When I had DSL I had to restart the modem about once a week. When it started running crappy it was time to reset it right quick.Maybe you want to get yourself a new DSL modem and test it out; this way you'll eliminate the possibility that you had a dying modem, because the ISP already tested that your line should be fine... Like I'd mentioned earlier, the modem itself could be 'flapping'.  Responding one minute and not the next, but you are correct, unless they test it continuiously then they won't know.  Most techs can't tell if they don't know what to look for.Well in any case, we need to know what Tennisguy is planning to or has done before we can say more on this issue  Quote from: Tennisguuy on JULY 20, 2009, 11:14:31 AM

What about offline? If it pauses playing video from your hard drive or DVD it would rule out the modem.

Solve : Web page now a file??????

Answer»

Um I was on a site and I don't KNOW what I did but it suddenly turned to a different site.  I tried to get back to it, but it kept taking me to an empty PAGE.  When I try to go, my computer (a Macbook) downloads it as a FILE on Text Edit that I believe is in javascript format.  What did I do?  How do I UNDO it?  I've NEVER had this problem before and I've been to the site many a time.  I just tried the site on a different computer (same network) and it doesn't work there either...The other one is Windows, btw.Sounds like a network or connection problem. What site is it?

Just wondering, I presume you're using Safari?

Solve : firefox history?

Answer»

Anyone know if there's a way to change the history in the sidebar to KEEP track of PAGES viewed per day further back than what's default? The way it's set up now is it can keep track of each day up to 5 days back, but after 5 days, it gets ambiguous and says last 7 days, or last month.
I need to know each day's exact history further back than it is showing. I did a quick search for addons, but didn't FIND anything useful.
Any suggestions?Looked around in        about:config         ?

When searching on   "hist"    ,  about ten lines appear.
No idea if anything in them might be what you want.    It is a bit cryptic, and would take some researching, etc.

While you wait here,    try     http://forums.mozillazine.org/        too.

I hadn't visited there in a while, and was suprised to see:
"(Anonymous/guest posting allowed)"      on the   Firefox support section.

It is a good FORUM,  with lots of traffic, and knowledgeable people.

I fumbled with a quick search, and didn't find your question already posted -  but that is not definitive.    Could be there, and I just didn't hit on it.

If you can't find it either,   then you might might as well post it.  ... can't hurt to try.

Good luck with it.

Actually, I did see that there is an option to show all history, which brings up a separate history window with more options. I found what I was looking for in there. I had to add the "view date" column and then I was able to sort by date. It would be kind of cool to have everything sorted by date and site like in the history sidebar, but this will work.
The thing I didn't like about the show all history window is that I found out that I've been WASTING a lot more time on random internet stuff than I think my supervisor would be happy with. I'll have to keep an eye on that now. Quote from: michaewlewis on July 22, 2009, 11:55:26 AM

Solve : adobe flash causing computer freeze?

Answer»

I have a Dell desktop with XP and SP2.  About 2 weeks ago my browser (Firefox) began freezing up everything on my desktop anywhere from 1 to 15 minutes after turning on my computer.  The mouse and keyboard worked but I couldn't do anything with them because the screen was frozen, not even Ctl ATL Delete worked.. I would have to power off the tower.  IE was not doing this but I HATE IE.  I even tried Opera and like it as well as Firefox but I'm having the same issue of freezing up.   After several days of scouring Google everyone seemed to aim the problem at memory or hard drive issues, viruses, doing a registry CLEAN up, you name it.  Finally I came across a board that discussed it only happens with Firefox and Opera and it was narrowed down to sites with Flash player which I guess IE doesn't use.  After playing around a little I uninstalled Adobe Flash and the problem went away.  However, a lot of the sites I visit require Flash to make the site work or view the content.  I did a clean removal of Adobe Flash (the newest version) and then reinstalled the same newest version, same problem.. it freezes my browser.  Why would it have worked all this time and suddenly just started a few weeks ago?  I had not recently installed anything new so I thought it was strange.  My question is... I need to use something.. is there an alternative to Adobe Flash or is there something else I might TRY?  This is driving me crazy!Which version of Firefox are you running?  You may need to uninstall Flash using Adobe's removal tool.  You can get that here: http://is.gd/1Gd9NI believe it was 3.5 ( I had uninstalled then reinstalled the newest version from the Mozilla website and then unistalled it again and currently am using Opera).  Also, I had already uninstalled Adobe flash using the Adobe uninstall tool about 3 days ago and have had no problems with any browser since, however, when I play vids on my computer using any player type (GOM, RealPlayer, WMP, etc...) that my computer still freezes after a few minutes of play.  So... I'm thinking it's something in my operating system and I'm considering a reinstall of XP.  UGH!  I wonder whether hardware issues might be a factor here.  Do you know what temperature your PROCESSOR normally runs at?  Do you have any temperature monitoring software installed?  If not, you might try SpeedFan.

How old is your power supply and what are the wattage and voltage specs on it?  Have you made any hardware changes recently? My computer is 1 year old..  a Dell Vostro 400 series.  I made sure both fans were working properly because I had seen other posts mentioning to check that, then I ran a temp scan and it came in normal.  No hardware or software had been installed just prior to the problem which started about 2 weeks ago.

Solve : Can I clear the drop down box??

Answer»

Hello and thank you for taking notice of my thread.

I want to clear out  "Some" of the websites that are in my drop down box in the MOZILLA browser page.

Some of these sites are actually not sites that I visit, EITHER any more, or are misspelled non existant and a variety of other reasons.

The end of the day i would like them gone.

Can it be done?
If so how please?  Go to Tools/Options.  Click the Privacy tab.  Tick the box Clear history when Firefox closes.  click the Settings button next to that entry.  Tick the boxes you want Firefox to clear when you close the browser... QUOTE

You can't REMOVE "some" of them. If you don't visit them, they won't appear anymore after a while. You CAN remove some of them.  Starting typing the website in the address bar until it appears in the drop down.  Highlight the one you want to get rid of, using the cursor keys, and hit the delete button on your KEYBOARD.Once again, my mentors, you have filled my world with excellent knowledge of a computers workings.

Solve : online banking screen name and password problem?

Answer»

When I go to my online bank's webpage and type my screen name in the field it AUTOMATICALLY puts my name in the field. Then it also automatically puts my password in the password field. I know I told the computer to do this before but now I do not want this to happen because I am on a public computer. any help would be great thanksWhat BROWSER is this? Quote

I am on a public computer.
Whoa!  Is this is an Internet cafe or some other public place where that computer will be used by other people? I'd be discussing this with the owner or manager ASAP.  And, I would go to some private computer, logon to my bank account, and change my password, and make SURE no strange transactions have hit the account. I would only bank at HOME...
Your mileage may vary.If I were only banking from your home Pat, my mileage would be very HIGH indeed, for example.

Solve : How do I know if I'm still surfing through a proxy or my regular IP?

Answer»

I use a laptop with a wireless connection, runs VISTA, and my default browser is Chrome. Recently there was a website that I wanted to get on that blocked my IP address. So, in order to view it, I used one of those INTERNET proxy sites to mask my IP, where you would just type in the URL.

After viewing the site, I cleared my cache and rebooted my computer to delete any traces of the proxy. After this, I tried to get onto the site, and was able to, much to my surprise. So, my question is, how do I know if my computer is still using the proxy server, and not my REGULAR server? How do I make sure I am using my real IP and not the proxy IP???

Sorry if I used the wrong terminology.  You went to the proxy it connected you through that to the site you asked for it to go to, that's it you're using your regular IP unless your still going to the proxy site.

Sorry if my post is so confusing your connection is fine.

EDIT: If you want to check your connection next time to see if its your regular IP go to www.Whatismyip.comThanks for the quick reply. The thing is, I'm able to go into the (forbidden) site normally now, even though I'm not typing the URL into the proxy site. I'm so confused! Why were you kicked from the site ? ? QUOTE from: patio on July 16, 2009, 06:40:01 AM

Why were you kicked from the site ? ?

It's a ridiculous, stupid story. Believe me, it's not interesting.  But basically it was a forum, and the admin stated something as fact that I knew 100% to be false, so I corrected her on it, etc. she banned me.

BOTTOM line is, I don't care to go to that site ever again, I just want to make sure that I'm using my own IP, not a proxy IP. I went to whatismyip.com but how do I know if that's my real IP?Do you have a hardware proxy? Most people don't.

Quote

Copy your IP and paste it in the address bar. If you get a network error or a server timeout, it's more than likely your IP.

Solve : Error message upon exiting Iexplor.exe?

Every time I get out of IE (7) I get an Application Error message that says "the instruction "0x02c53812" referenced memory "0x02d18bf4". The memory couldn't be read.Check OK to terminate the program.
I click OK and the get a 216 error message . I click OK on that and all is well.
This has been going on for more than 6 months. How do I get rid of this?
THXCould you try to run IE7 without add ons?

right click the IE icon on the desktop
and choose START Without Add-ons?
Or go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet
Explorer (No Add-ons).
That worked!
But In playing around, I see that I don't want to do that permanently.
Do you know how I can figure out whick particular program is CAUSING the PROBLEM?
I assume it is not the Active X...probably Yahoo toolbar or something else I don't even know is there.
How do I segregate it to the problem program?
THXDo you remember what was the last add-on you installed on IE?
Don't know waht was added recently. Since my msg, have found a listing of addons... it is quite extensive. How about if I disable 5 (those that are not Active X programs) and see if the problems go away.
There are some adblocking programs that I don't recall. I have a CA ANTIVIRUS and antispam program that I get with my ISP.
THX for your hepl.
