Solve : Firefox NOT remembering login details? |
Answer» In Firefox 2.0.0.20 (the latest version that will work in WinMe), the username and password for Virgin WEBMAIL is prompted, but the identical information for an identical login form for Virgin Broadband USAGE is NOT prompted; and the settings for REMEMBERING the login details are ineffective FOR THIS SITE. I have TRACKED differences between these sites to differences in 'Page Info' in Firefox's Tools menu, but I cannot change the Page Info for USAGE to be the same as for WEBMAIL. Some sites (e.g. PayPal, Yahoo, Windows Live and bank sites) use autocomplete="off" to prevent Firefox from saving the name and the password. The first reply (where I got the quote from) has some pretty good info and links you might want to look at. Quote from: wickedking on August 20, 2010, 08:19:02 AM Did you check settings of firefox? In Firefox 2.0.0.20, I found 'Remember what I enter in forms and the search bar' UNticked in Tools menu; OPTIONS; Privacy; but placing a tick for that improved nothing. I KNOW that bookmarks are 'remembered' because I use a bookmark to access Virgin Broadband Usage. Whether this Firefox is portable is beyond my knowledge and experimentation. My problem in Firefox 2.0.0.20 is just on this PC. In any case it does remember login details for all websites except Virgin Broadband Usage - most notably it remembers my SAME login details as for Usage in an identical login screen for Virgin Webmail. Quote from: silverpersian on August 20, 2010, 08:21:52 AM isn t it a good thing that it does not remember login details ?It DOES remember login details for all other websites, just not for the one I want it to remember login details for - namely Virgin Broadband Usage. So your question 'is not applicable'. I can't find any reference to Private Browsing. There is 'Private Data' and that entails the OPPOSITE of what I want for the login details of Virgin Broadband Usage. "Always clear my private data when I close Firefox." is NOT ticked. Quote from: kpac on August 20, 2010, 09:46:28 AM I'm not sure how exactly, but I know that PayPal uses some script which stops the browser from remembering the username and password. Maybe something similar is in use here. I suspect you are right. I pointed that out to a SUPERVISOR at the Virgin Helpdesk, referencing the fact that the same login screen is used by Webmail, and those login details ARE remembered (and prompted), but the supervisor was adamant that it is a browser and NOT a website issue. I strongly disagree with him - we parted on terms less than 'cordial'. Quote from: soybean on August 20, 2010, 10:56:47 AM Does it remember login details for this forum and various other non-secure (http, not https) websites? Sure does, and more PARTICULARLY it remembers the identical details for an identical login screen for Virgin Webmail. Quote from: Helpmeh on August 20, 2010, 08:02:25 PM The first reply (where I got the quote from) has some pretty good info and links you might want to look at.I have previously come across the <> idea. I could not find 'autocomplete' anywhere in this Firefox 2.0.0.20 The recommended solution is to use a 'bookmarklet' - that failed to solve my problem. I will look at the URL you refered me to - thank you for that. |

Solve : DSL suddenly vanished? |
Answer» I have no way to log onto internet now, no way for DSL to access internet. It was there last night, but is not there any longer. Is this something I can re-add to enable internet access, or ....what to do? I am a beginner, but would not want to put the machine in the shop if not needed. Help!!! first message..... got "did not match any items".I need to see EXACT message. Quote Copy all text in Notepad ([Ctrl-A], then [Ctrl-C]), and then post it (paste = [Ctrl-V]) in your next reply. Quote second note.....there was no answerQuote Copy and paste what you see in Notepad into a Reply here.Thank you for your responses Broni. But I do not have any expertise to do that on one computer and copy it onto a disk and then take it this computer to send it to you. I am "lost". But thank you for responding.I was hoping I could just add a new DSL connection/connector I guess. Since it says I no longer have one.We don't really know, what the problem is, yet? Do you have USB flash DRIVE (can borrow)? Most LIKELY, you'll need one, not only to transfer those text files to working computer, but, eventually, to transfer some repair tools from working computer to bad computer. There is a drive (USB) but I do not have the thing to put in. I have CD/DVD on each machine and so could copy from one machine onto a disk and then load that onto the other machine. I think. I tried my provider and they charged me $75 to sign up for "help" service, but did not help. They want to send out a tech for $154 additional but still will not guarantee to fix it! If you have CDRW disk (not CDR), that will work. Otherwise, I'd invest 10-15 bucks to buy USB flash drive. Believe me, it'll come handy on many occasions. It is CD-RW. Both machines. DVD/R/W/RAMI'm not talking about drives themselves. I'm talking about about disks, you put into them. CDs come in two flavors: CDR (you can write to them once) and CDRW (re-writable). I don't want you to WASTE your money, by using CDR disks, because once you write something to them, you can't write again anymore. Bottom line, USB flash drive would be the best solution.I have 15-20 DVD-R disks. I have no problems using them.Well, if so, follow instruction from my reply #1, transfer logs to a CD, move the CD to good computer and post logs back. Make sure, you type those commands EXACTLY as they're (including spaces), or it won't work (CD wasted). Quote from: Celamanka on August 23, 2010, 01:24:22 PM I have no way to log onto internet now, no way for DSL to access internet....So, we're talking about two computers, both using the same DSL service, right? I think we're missing some relevant details here. Please elaborate on your computing environment as it relates to Internet access. Quote from: Celamanka on August 23, 2010, 03:13:47 PM I tried my provider and they charged me $75 to sign up for "help" service, but did not help. They want to send out a tech for $154 additional but still will not guarantee to fix it!That's just ludicrous! |

Solve : Hotmail folders? |
Answer» When my wife signs on to her hotmail account (either on my desktop or her laptop), she can read any of the messages in her in-box. However if she TRIES to go into any of her saved emails, the screen goes blank and the status bar SHOWS "view.at.dmt" and then just hangs. If I go into my hotmail account I have no problems viewing my saved emails. It seems to be something connected to her hotmail account. Solve : "Server Cannot be Found" Sometimes? |
Answer» I have a home network and 3 computers are connected to this system. Mine is the only ONE doing this. I am currently on another computer to type this because my browser is giving me the "Server cannot be FOUND" message. It does this recently, it just started doing this yesterday. Sometimes the browser will work, without a problem. Sometimes it will work but the pages look strange and pictures are missing and such. Sometimes it just does not work at all and will give me the "Server cannot be found" message. I look at my network, my computer is sending off a lot more packages than I am receiving. I can not figure out what is wrong. My TCP/IP is set to automatic, I have tried a lot of things already. Things that COULD have messed it up. Yesterday, my internet provider came out, he was at my neighbors hooking up what I imagine is another network, could he have done something to MESS mine up? Also, last week I came into CONTACT with a virus, I cleaned it off and I fear that it messed something up. |

Solve : Browsers and CPU? |
Answer» Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 29, 2008, 11:57:42 AM and since you've got a Dual Core, it'll barely affect you at all. It shouldn't I agree - but fact is when that CPU % sits on 50 or so when this problem OCCURS - it slows things very significantly! Sluggish in fact. Quote from: ChrisXPPro on September 29, 2008, 02:12:35 PM Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 29, 2008, 11:57:42 AMand since you've got a Dual Core, it'll barely affect you at all. I meant Process Explorer- not the firefox problem. I think we kind of got dragged off-topic there for a few posts. Absolutely no idea who caused it, not a clue at all. and quit rubbing it in there- when your at 50% your pretty much using a single core CPU- are you calling my comp sluggish? Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 29, 2008, 06:52:14 PM and quit rubbing it in there- when your at 50% your pretty much using a single core CPU- are you calling my comp sluggish? Not trying to rub it in! I had this occur again today and when checking (yeah - only taskmanager!) - one core was approx 30% and the other 60% - so not something HOGGING one core only it seems. Interesting tho - IIRC I left IE with only two or three tabs open - and when I came back in office at some point noticed the CPU activity as high. Hard to know what transitions it from near quiescent to super active! IE had in fact this time pretty much locked up and showed as unresponding so - closed it and re opened. Seems to be a function of browser stability.what about VM usage? I encounter this problem when I leave Firefox idle on a page with javascript- I can't switch tabs or anything in the meantime either, and if I switch to something else and RETURN, it doesn't paint itself. I don't use IE7 enough to know if it happens to me with that as well. Personally- when that happens, it usually means I should restart Firefox. I'm sure there is a fix, and if anybody finds one, I would also like to hear it as well.Ahh yes - VM - forgot to mention that. Well I did notice it was showing about 750Mb approx. Setting is 2Gb min and 4Gb max. Did not remember tho at the time to inspect HDD activity. Your FF comment re idle on a JScript page does tie in with what I notice pretty much and IE of course is I think in essence doing same thing. Haven't seen if Opera does it as I don't use that much any more.Try 2G min AND max... Quote from: patio on September 30, 2008, 09:00:59 AM Try 2G min AND max... Do you mean max unspecified?he means to change your Pagefile settings to 2G minimum and maximum- this will prevent pagefile fragmentation. While likely not the source of your problem, pagefile fragmentation is something best avoided. But- ChrisXPPro- I was referring to the memory usage of Firefox in that WUSSY program, Task manager. In the select Columns tab, there is a "Virtual Memory Usage" selection, or something similar. For me, right now- firefox Mem usage is around 75MB, and Firefox VM usage is 64MB... However, your memory usage numbers may be more, irregular.Process Explorer will also give you a much more accurate reading...FREE |

Solve : What Internet Browser do you like and mainly use???? |
Answer» OK, well i did do a search and didn't find any other thread LIKE this, so.... here it goes
In reply, post what you voted for and why you like to use that browser. I voted for Firefox, i like it because of the add ons, i did use Chrome for a while, but it was getting a bit of a pain and after hearing about some security faults, decided not to use it... soo yeah... back to go old firefox )Wow, another ONE. There have been many topics/polls related to your question, so I'm just going to answer briefly. Firefox is the best! Most secure, most customizable, and in my experience the fastest. I actually have Chrome SKINS for Firefox. Worth CHECKING out. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8782 I also very rarely use IE6 (Never want IE7) Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on September 28, 2008, 02:26:37 AM Wow, another one. Oh, right, just that there wasn't a really GOOD ones that i could find. Thanks for the Chrome Theme, i'm downloading it now Mainly I use Netscape Navigator, but sometimes Opera, Firefox, and even old (and stupid) IE. Chrome is also okay.FF3, and when I'm lazy IE7 for my hotmail- since MSN decides it'll ignore my program access and defaults Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 29, 2008, 11:59:07 AM FF3, and when I'm lazy IE7 for my hotmail- since MSN decides it'll ignore my program access and defaultsWhich is why I kept IE6. Solve : Major Problem With IE? |
Answer» have been having big problems with IE lately. I'm not sure if it's spyware related but i'm pulling my hair out over it. What happens is that much of the time clicking the shortcut does nothing except for start the program in the task manager only. It sits there taking up 8k or so of memory but no browser window pops up. The only way to get rid of it is to kill iexplore it in the task manager. When IE does start up it's prone to frequent freezing and sometimes it will open additional windows when I click on a bookmark or hit "search" on google. What I mean by this is my bookmarked site will open up in a new window and google search results will also open up in a new window. I've uninstalled and reinstalled IE7 and it made no difference at all. Close IE. Yea, the same thing happens. For a while that was working but over the past 2 weeks or so it hasn't. Same thing as when I click the explorer shortcut, nothing happens except that an iexplore process starts in task manager using around 8k or so of mem. Thanks for the suggestion webeye but I need IE to be working.Did you make any computer changes around the time IE started acting up - new software, new hardware, new drivers? 1) Check your shortcut properties (right-click on the IE shortcut>Properties). Does it point to the correct location (mine is shown below for reference.) 2) CLEAR browser history, COOKIES and CACHE - through IE or with CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) 3) Have you tried to reset IE? Start>Control Panel>Internet Options>Advanced Tab>Reset. Best of luck. [recovering disk space -- attachment deleted by admin]IE has many problems..particularly 7 version Quote from: stallin12 on September 15, 2008, 02:14:45 AM IE has many problems..particularly 7 version Hmmmm.....Although I don't like IE7 personally, where is your source? Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on September 15, 2008, 02:22:25 AM Hmmmm.....Although I don't like IE7 personally, where is your source? Yes, I'd like to know that too. I've never had any problems with IE.Are you using Zone Alarm firewall? Awhile ago there was a conflict between a IE-7 update & the ZA firewall. I think the fix was to lower the level of security in the firewall. If you have Zone Alarm firewall installed open ZA, Click on Program Control Move the "slider" to Medium Click on Firewall Set Internet Zone Security to High Set Trusted Zone security to Medium save all the settings & close ZA. There is a update to Internet Explorer that causes your problem if you have ZA installed & the Program Control is set to High. |

Solve : Firefox streaming? |
Answer» This could fit in 'Web Design' and also 'other' perhaps. gotta reckon that most FF users will possibly not want to add anything. This doesn't make sense. IE has plug-ins, too. FF plugins are safer, since they don't use ActiveX. Also, the above video plays as well in FF's IE tab. What I meant Broni was - we have to assume that many browser users only want to have something come up automatically in their basic bare-bones browser. You and I and others here - will happily use FF in ''IE mode" or download a plugin ... but there are many out there who will not or cannot do a darned thing to aid their browsing experience. So - this is directed at ''them'' out there who might want to view that vid. Can you see where I am comin from? The guy I work for thinks I am talkin ''techy'' if I mention even the word ''folder'' - and it seems there are others around who have zero ability or inclination to adapt their platforms. This was my point. I have no automatic means in the code right now that will play the .WMV in FF .. if it is basic FF. I was looking to see if there was any way to embed that ''fooled'' FF and achieved a successful result without the need for the user to do anything! Yeah - I am a cynic when it comes to many web users!! Quote Can you see where I am comin from?Partially yes, partially no. Bare bone IE won't do everything, you want. To do some things, you need plugins, and add-ons. Same with everything. You can use Wordpad, but if you want something better, you install Office. This is hard to get across - don't think we are on same page yet! Let me try one more shot. Thx for patience! So - WMV file on server - available for folks either as download or streaming. Streaming is fine in IE but not in FF. Knowing what many folks are like who might visit the site, it is unlikely that many at all will have plug-ins for FF if that's their browser CHOICE - they just want things to work! So they will get zilch in FF and move on. Therefore, right now the embed code works fine in IE but not in FF and to avoid having to give FF users any special instructions such as 'download Firefox media player plug-in' ...... my quest is to see if the embed code can be in any way tweaked to make streaming function in a base level FF. I rather doubt this is possible judging by my fairly exhaustive searches but - still wondering none the less.Chris Let's put it this way. If someone buys a computer, and one wants to use it as is, fine. One's computer power will be just limited. If someone wants little bit more out of one's computer, he/she has to keep computer updated. That includes plugins. Secondly, Firefox works in different way, than IE. IE comes with bunch of stuff, you like, or not. You can't even uninstall anything. Firefox comes as a base. You want to make it better, you have tons of choices. That why, I like Firefox. Besides WMP is M$ application, and it took quiet a battle to force M$ to issue .wmv plugin. It couldn't be done without M$ approval.Thx Broni - I am with you TOTALLY - particularly re the MSoft angle. Remember, this is not for me and my own IE and FF (I keep FF a tad basic for test purposes - so it reflects what many "ordinary" folks might have, as against many of us here who add all useful stuff). I want sometimes to simulate what the uninitiated out there might get functionally. This whole problem is directed at ''them'' out there - the seemingly so many computer illiterate folks who barely know how to drag and drop, let alone store their files sensibly!! Try to get them to fetch a useful download and APPLY it ... well, might as well ask them for their genetic code!! It has become apparent over time, not only the site I pointed you at, but also others I manage - that Joe Sixpack wants immediate gratification with no effort or ATTEMPT to upgrade his system or add useful plugins. it is because of this that I seek a way to pre-empt a problem by perhaps a code fix. Anyways - thx for your feedback - always appreciated dude. Any time |

I recently installed a new Windows XP and got all the updates, use Avira (it's always been good to me). I'll come back when I have it figured out I guess.Do you have a question? Solve : Can't log in to certain websites, tried everything I can think of.? |
Answer» On my parents laptop (which I never use unless I have to) I can't log in to certain websites like reddit, digg, shuttercal, and a few others. There's no error message, I just end up getting REDIRECTED to the homepage over and over again WITHOUT being logged in. I've tried using Firefox, IE, and Chrome, but it makes no difference. I cleared the cache and deleted all the cookies again, with no difference. Restarting the computer does nothing, and it was recently defragged. What REALLY stumps me is that I am able to log into other websites like Gmail, my bank account, and Livejournal. My mom installed CA Security Center on the computer which is an unbelievably *censored* program- Opinion. Quote I disabled the firewall, and that solved pretty much every problem I was having with the internet on this computer. You NEED a firewall running on your computer when you're not on the Internet, let alone when you are on the Internet.Firewall is essential. Without it, you are liable to having hackers hack your computer which is worse. |

Solve : IE for Linux/Mac?? |
Answer» Yeah, MS dropped IE for Macintosh in 03. But you can still download Wine, like someone said, and then download this What are you talking about? IE runs on Mac now.Only IE 5 which does not even have tabbed browsing. Quote from: Cityscape on August 01, 2009, 11:26:47 AM Only IE 5 which does not even have tabbed browsing. if you want tabbed browsing, use firefox. If you really have that yearn for ActiveX vulnerabilities, add-ons that are almost exclusively malware, and a penchant for surfing with a browser that has never met W3C specifications, then I GUESS your out of luck. I know, everybody wants one; it's the elusiveness of the creature. I suppose you could get a similar effect with firefox, just modify the sources and add random malloc(1024*1024) calls. But I mean, really- your after the genuine IE experience, not some shabbily created knockoff- you want the shabbily created real thing!I frequent a cable network television site so I can stream video of episodes of television shows. It often doesn't load properly in Firefox, but I can stream from that site with IE just fine.... Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 01, 2009, 12:22:36 PM Yah, I only want it for the web pages that only work in IE. I'm a firefox guy myself. Quote from: Cityscape on August 01, 2009, 02:29:28 PM Yah, I only want it for the web pages that only work in IE. I take it then IETab doesn't work on Linux/Mac? (probably not)That's okay. I'll go install an older IE. |

Solve : Can't open most(almost all) web sites IE7, Fire fox, Windows Vista? |
Answer» I had a power out due to a thunderstorm and after my HP m8100n PC came back up I can't USE the internet. My ISP checked my DSL modem and everthing is okay. My ISP is Pioneer (pldi.net). I can ping and return is okay with Pioneer, yahoo, google, ect. so I know I do have a connection. I can use mozilla firefox and search google and it will pull up the search page but won't go to any of the sites. The only sites that IE 7 will go to is pldi.net or hp.com and then the pages within are super slow. I use biblegateway.com ALLOT and when I tried it, it took about ten minuets but it finally pulled it up and took another ten minutes to search a bible verse. I currently use AVG 8.5 free anti virus and spybot and windows defender for spyware/ad ware. I've scanned in safe mode and spybot found cooolwebsearch something? but couldn't remove and promted to run on next start up. After start up scan didn't find anything I think. I'm using windows vista home premium sp2 and I've tried turning off third party services, start up programs, resetting IE and nothing helps. My hp didn't come with a vista cd and I really don't want to reformat from recovery partition. Can any one HELP? |

Solve : Unable to open link within a webpage on Internet Explorer 8? |
Answer» I have a new Dell Studio XPS with windows vista. Here is my problem: I go to MLB.com, I clink on the gameday link or any other link and it does not open. This happens on other webpages also. I have no problems when I am using FireFox. Only on Explorer 8. What is causing this? Please help. Thanks. My first guess WOULD be your internet security settings, or activex or java settings. Do the PAGES that you are trying to view have a lot of animation?Yes....But why do they not affect webpages on firefox? Doesn't the internet security settings apply to both explorer 8 and firefox? Thanks for your reply...Hope you have an answer...I think your problem lies with IE8. Therefore, I'd DOWNGRADE to IE7 if I were you. Quote from: pvinales on July 26, 2009, 01:18:42 PM Yes....But why do they not affect webpages on firefox? Doesn't the internet security settings apply to both explorer 8 and firefox? Thanks for your reply...Hope you have an answer...No, security settings in IE only pertain to IE; likewise, for Firefox. Quote from: kpac on July 26, 2009, 02:41:56 PM I think your problem lies with IE8. Therefore, I'd downgrade to IE7 if I were you. Out of curiosity, why would you suggest that? Quote from: Quantos on July 28, 2009, 05:21:18 PM Out of curiosity, why would you suggest that?1) I don't like IE, 2) It's not stable enough for 'casual' browsing. Quote from: kpac on July 29, 2009, 03:56:05 AM 1) I don't like IE, 2) It's not stable enough for 'casual' browsing. I haven't had an issue with it. I do a lot of 'casual browsing'. Just because you don't like it doesn't really mean anything to me. Quote Just because you don't like it doesn't really mean anything to me.You asked me a question, I answered it.I'm trying to get a reason from you. Something other than just an opinion. When I tried IE 8 on my Win XP system awhile back, it as very sluggish. Be fore installing it, I watched video my Microsoft portraying IE 8 as fast, even faster than Firefox as I recall. WOW, was that video wrong! I removed it. I've seen some complaints about it in forums; so, some users, even though perhaps a very small percentage of them, seem to have encountered problems. It lasted less than a day on my machine. I use FireFox 98% of the time anyways...Only 98% Pat? Fer shame! (Only time I use IE is when some £$%£$& stupid web designer hasn't had the wit to create a standards compliant web site and even then I'm cursing IE and the web designer all the £$%£$% way.) Disclaimer: don't bother counting the symbols and trying to guess what swear word I meant. I didn't mean any in particular, since I don't swear. |

Solve : Internet video pauses continuously? |
Answer» Over the last two days whenever I try playing an internet video(i.e. video from YOUTUBE etc.) it pauses continuously and keeps buffering. This is the first time it has done this. Also, SOFTWARE updates over the internet are taking much longer. I have DSLWho is your ISP? Do you you know what bandwidth you are paying for? This might have changed. When I had DSL I had to restart the modem about once a week. When it started running crappy it was time to reset it right quick.Maybe you want to get yourself a new DSL modem and test it out; this way you'll eliminate the possibility that you had a dying modem, because the ISP already tested that your line should be fine... Like I'd mentioned earlier, the modem itself could be 'flapping'. Responding one minute and not the next, but you are correct, unless they test it continuiously then they won't know. Most techs can't tell if they don't know what to look for.Well in any case, we need to know what Tennisguy is planning to or has done before we can say more on this issue Quote from: Tennisguuy on JULY 20, 2009, 11:14:31 AM I have same problems with playing video lately. What about offline? If it pauses playing video from your hard drive or DVD it would rule out the modem. |

Solve : Web page now a file?????? |
Answer» Um I was on a site and I don't KNOW what I did but it suddenly turned to a different site. I tried to get back to it, but it kept taking me to an empty PAGE. When I try to go, my computer (a Macbook) downloads it as a FILE on Text Edit that I believe is in javascript format. What did I do? How do I UNDO it? I've NEVER had this problem before and I've been to the site many a time. I just tried the site on a different computer (same network) and it doesn't work there either...The other one is Windows, btw.Sounds like a network or connection problem. What site is it? |

Solve : firefox history? |
Answer» Anyone know if there's a way to change the history in the sidebar to KEEP track of PAGES viewed per day further back than what's default? The way it's set up now is it can keep track of each day up to 5 days back, but after 5 days, it gets ambiguous and says last 7 days, or last month. ...but didn't see anything that made any sense. lol I know that feeling. While you wait here, try http://forums.mozillazine.org/ too. I hadn't visited there in a while, and was suprised to see: "(Anonymous/guest posting allowed)" on the Firefox support section. It is a good FORUM, with lots of traffic, and knowledgeable people. I fumbled with a quick search, and didn't find your question already posted - but that is not definitive. Could be there, and I just didn't hit on it. If you can't find it either, then you might might as well post it. ... can't hurt to try. Good luck with it. Actually, I did see that there is an option to show all history, which brings up a separate history window with more options. I found what I was looking for in there. I had to add the "view date" column and then I was able to sort by date. It would be kind of cool to have everything sorted by date and site like in the history sidebar, but this will work. The thing I didn't like about the show all history window is that I found out that I've been WASTING a lot more time on random internet stuff than I think my supervisor would be happy with. I'll have to keep an eye on that now. Quote from: michaewlewis on July 22, 2009, 11:55:26 AM ... I found what I was looking for in there. Cool. Glad you got it solved. Quote I had to add the "view date" column and then I was able to sort by date. It would be kind of cool to have everything sorted by date and site like in the history sidebar, but this will work. Quote The thing I didn't like about the show all history window is that I found out that I've been wasting a lot more time on random internet stuff than I think my supervisor would be happy with. Solve : adobe flash causing computer freeze? |
Answer» I have a Dell desktop with XP and SP2. About 2 weeks ago my browser (Firefox) began freezing up everything on my desktop anywhere from 1 to 15 minutes after turning on my computer. The mouse and keyboard worked but I couldn't do anything with them because the screen was frozen, not even Ctl ATL Delete worked.. I would have to power off the tower. IE was not doing this but I HATE IE. I even tried Opera and like it as well as Firefox but I'm having the same issue of freezing up. After several days of scouring Google everyone seemed to aim the problem at memory or hard drive issues, viruses, doing a registry CLEAN up, you name it. Finally I came across a board that discussed it only happens with Firefox and Opera and it was narrowed down to sites with Flash player which I guess IE doesn't use. After playing around a little I uninstalled Adobe Flash and the problem went away. However, a lot of the sites I visit require Flash to make the site work or view the content. I did a clean removal of Adobe Flash (the newest version) and then reinstalled the same newest version, same problem.. it freezes my browser. Why would it have worked all this time and suddenly just started a few weeks ago? I had not recently installed anything new so I thought it was strange. My question is... I need to use something.. is there an alternative to Adobe Flash or is there something else I might TRY? This is driving me crazy!Which version of Firefox are you running? You may need to uninstall Flash using Adobe's removal tool. You can get that here: http://is.gd/1Gd9NI believe it was 3.5 ( I had uninstalled then reinstalled the newest version from the Mozilla website and then unistalled it again and currently am using Opera). Also, I had already uninstalled Adobe flash using the Adobe uninstall tool about 3 days ago and have had no problems with any browser since, however, when I play vids on my computer using any player type (GOM, RealPlayer, WMP, etc...) that my computer still freezes after a few minutes of play. So... I'm thinking it's something in my operating system and I'm considering a reinstall of XP. UGH! I wonder whether hardware issues might be a factor here. Do you know what temperature your PROCESSOR normally runs at? Do you have any temperature monitoring software installed? If not, you might try SpeedFan. |

Quote I am on a public computer.Whoa! Is this is an Internet cafe or some other public place where that computer will be used by other people? I'd be discussing this with the owner or manager ASAP. Solve : How do I know if I'm still surfing through a proxy or my regular IP? |
Answer» I use a laptop with a wireless connection, runs VISTA, and my default browser is Chrome. Recently there was a website that I wanted to get on that blocked my IP address. So, in order to view it, I used one of those INTERNET proxy sites to mask my IP, where you would just type in the URL. Why were you kicked from the site ? ? It's a ridiculous, stupid story. Believe me, it's not interesting. But basically it was a forum, and the admin stated something as fact that I knew 100% to be false, so I corrected her on it, etc. she banned me. BOTTOM line is, I don't care to go to that site ever again, I just want to make sure that I'm using my own IP, not a proxy IP. I went to whatismyip.com but how do I know if that's my real IP?Do you have a hardware proxy? Most people don't. Quote I went to whatismyip.com but how do I know if that's my real IP?Copy your IP and paste it in the address bar. If you get a network error or a server timeout, it's more than likely your IP. |
