Solve : Web page won't open?

Answer»

About 5 days ago, my friend introduced me to a game at http://www.dragons-lore.com/moderncrime and I loved it.  The problem is, it won't load the site for me anymore.

When I first started playing the game, I had no problems at all.  Then all of a sudden, it comes up with the message saying it can't connect to the site.  I didn't think MUCH of it and moved on.  I later tried to get on the site at another computer and I was able to get on without any problems.  When I came back to my computer though, I got the same message as earlier.

I THOUGHT it might be my firewall, so I deactived it, but still nothing.  I ran a spyware test, but still nothing.  I finally ran a virus test and still had no results.

I EVEN made sure that all of my internet setting were the same on my computer as my friend's, but still nothing.

If someone knows why this page won't open for me, please post it here.

ThanksI also tried this, but had no SUCCESS.  I did all of them:

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Internet Options
5. Security tab
6. Reset all security zones to Default

And/or

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Internet Options
5. Advanced
6. Restore Defaults button.

You may need to do the following as well

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Internet Options
5. General tab
6. Remove cookies, temporary files and history  Try going to http://www.dragons-lore.com/ then logging in from there.Actually, http://www.dragons-lore.com is a different game.  The site that I posted just uses the same server as this one.  The creator of the two games are FRIENDS, so they share the site.

The only problem with this is, I'm not able to get on either site.  And its not that I can't log in, the site itself won't load (that goes for both pages).

I'm at college right now on my schools network, could it be a problem on their part.  The only thing that would be weird with that is I can get onto the site from my roommates computer and we're both on the same network.

Solve : Password for Outlook X 6?

Answer»

Hi, and thanks for the help -- I hope!

I haven't used Outlook for quite some time, but there are some personal letters in it that I would like to PROTECT from prying eyes.

Is there a way of password-protecting the entire program so it cannot be opened?Password protect the entire computer or you will be found out!!!!

(And you might even get found out then!)

Don't want to do the whole PC, just Outlook. Can it be done?

I guess I got spoiled by Courier email client, because you can prevent people from opening it by using a password. You can do the "Switch Identity" thing. You might CHECK the CompHope FAQ's for info on this. It may be enough to help you solve this issue.Andrew_L. .........
Currently there is no way to password protect Outlook on startup or to lock Outlook if you need to quickly walk away from your computer other than by using your Microsoft WINDOWS® logon password or by using third-party software written specifically to password protect Outlook. However, you can set a password on your Personal Folders file (.pst) (Personal Folders file (.pst): Data file that stores your messages and other items on your computer. You can assign a .pst file to be the default delivery location for e-mail messages. You can use a .pst to organize and back up items for safekeeping.). If you use an Internet e-mail account in Outlook, such as a POP3 (POP3: A common protocol that is used to retrieve e-mail messages from an Internet e-mail server.) or HTTP (HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol): Protocol that is used when you access Web pages from the Internet. Outlook uses HTTP as an e-mail protocol.) account, your e-mail messages are delivered to a .pst data file on your computer's local hard disk. You can use a password on your .pst file to help prevent accidental intrusion by other people whom you share your computer with.

How?

On the Go menu, click Folder List.
Do one of the following:
If you have a POP3 e-mail account, right-click the Personal Folders folder, and then click Properties For "Personal Folders" on the shortcut menu.
If you have an HTTP e-mail account (not supported in Outlook 2000), such as MSN® Hotmail®, right-click the Hotmail folder, and then click Properties For "Hotmail" on the shortcut menu.
On the General tab, click Advanced.
Click Change Password.
In the Change Password dialog box, type your new password and verify it by typing it a second time. The password can be up to 15 characters.
Note  Use strong passwords that combine upper- and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Weak passwords don't mix these elements. Strong password: Y6dh!et5. Weak password: House27. Use a strong password that you can remember so that you don't have to write it down.

Make sure that the Save this password in your password list check box is CLEARED. This prevents the password from being cached, and you need to type the password each time you run Outlook. Don't forget the password.
Click OK three times.
When you click the e-mail account folder, you will be prompted for your password. After you gain access, you won't have to enter the password again for that session. If you exit and then restart Outlook, you will be prompted for the password when you click the e-mail account folder.

Important  The .pst password feature is not intended to provide security against HACKERS. It is just a way to prevent inadvertent intrusion by other people whom you trust and share your computer with, such as at home with your family. A more secure way of protecting your data on a computer that you share with other people is to create a password-protected Windows user account for each individual using the computer.

You could switch over to using Outlook Express , which offers the option of password protection.

I trust this answeres your question .

dl65: Thanks! I'll give it a try tonight.

GX: I did try the identity thing before I posted here, but it didn't seem to do anything.

Solve : Hello, Forum Members! Not a problem!?

Answer»

My first post! , and I didn't want it to be a desperate cry for help. I wanted it to be a positive hello, partly because I know my next one will be one of those cries for help!

But more importantly, I am really glad (in advance) that this forum and you (as members) are all here. I will read through the posts and TRY to learn this as well as I can from others' experience first.

This forum seems to be a great way to get people to learn to help themselves when there is a problem. And that is my goal, to learn more things about my NEW office friend named Dell.

I'll be lurking in the meantime. Until then, greetings! Welcome aboard

What kind of Ram problems Fed.

PERHAPS it was reading problems.  Okay,

I'll go in a bit of detail.
There is some problem in association with IE6 and java based GUI applications.

Because whenever they run in parallel, IE gives an illegal exception and terminates.
With that the java application also hangs.

It works well with IE5.
On reinstallation of IE6 i got those 2 errors. You scanned for viruses & Spyware?Yes.Time for Mozilla Firefox.
Although I do ENJOY Firefox, that doesn't mean you can't get the issue resolved. There was an issue similar to this with IE5, what you may attempt to do is open the C:\Winnt1\System32 directory and delete the dxtrans.dll and other file from this directory and try running the install again.

The dxtrans.dll is also associated with DirectX therefore you may also want to try reinstalling DirectX if deleting the file and reinstalling IE doesn't resolve the issue.
http://Http://www.microsoft.com/directxA couple of points:

It works fine with IE5.
I also tried copying those 2 DLLS from other machine where these things work fine, so problem is not with dll.

I can't move to Firefox or others, there are some sites which don't open in it. Quote

Solve : How to stop IE from auto connecting - Help please!?

Answer» INTERNET Explorer automatically connects when turning on laptop (which is on dial-up and has latest McAfee Firewall & ANTI Virus software). Is this a hijack virus? So, now when using my laptop,I have to disconnect the phone line to stop dial-up automatically connecting. When requiring the internet, I've had to plug the phone line back in when turning on the COMPUTER, as this is the only method of connecting now. If I leave the phone line connected to the laptop, Internet Explorer automatically dials up and connects. If I then disconnect the connection to my ISP and leave the line plugged in, Explorer will again automatically dial-up. But, if I wish to connect myself, while connected to the phone line, I am unable to. HOW TO GET RID OF THIS ANNOYING (AND COSTLY) BUG? Any SUGGESTIONS gratefully received.IE version?  Windows version? Have you updated? Updates/ What happened prior to all of this? Have you protected your system against spyware/adware/virii?

As above plus
IE>Tools>Internet Options>Connections>Never Dial a Connection. Thanks for speedy response guys, but "Never Dial a Connection" has always been selected. I also have all the latest updates and latest version of Spybot. My computer is simply being hijacked every time I turn it on - when phone line is connected. Any other ideas? Will it help?

Solve : not authorised?

Answer»

can anybody help. I get lots of placeholders on web sites that used to show pictures. I am running xp home and have just had my motherboard and processor replaced, before that everything was fine. I have got Java installed and it is running "apparently" I am also denied access to some sites that i used to visit, SAYING that i am not authorised to view the page. Somebody give me some CLUES please. Oh and i have tried setting all my internet options to default to no avail. Is it your security settings or theirs, is the question. What happened before the difficulties?I had no probs at all before, I could look at whatever i WANTED to on the net. I was running pro before, but know I am running home edition, make a difference?
Oh and what the *CENSORED* is linux????and why should i have it? Linux is another Operating System. Some people like it, but I don't   lol  It's more for a large business... Anyway... Let's try the basic routine steps... Have you scanned for viruses and Spyware? Is there another user on this computer? Are there any Internet control setting installed such as Firewalls and Parental Controls? The change in OS should not make a difference... What sites are these? If they are forums for example, you might have been banned.... Or, if you are visiting a page, it might have been altered by it's host... So check to make sure this happens on other computers before assuming it's yours. Let us know when you get this information

Solve : New window opening in IE 6.0?

Perhaps the others will follow suit? You're a genius, thank you..I don't know about that genius part,     but you're welcome.Well it only worked for a couple of page OPENINGS, seems to be random???
Any idea where to look next ??

Thanks.I think Ross is the IE expert. Perhaps he will drop in shortly.....Not WORKING for me either. Demon..... Whats happening ...is it opening up in a reduced size window ? ........ If it is.... open the window and then drag to window to the size you want ......and unless you have altered the defaults.... windows will remember the size and open all ie windows that size ....

DL65  And if the last window you close is full size then the first window you open will be fuul size too. All additional windows opened after that will be as DL65 DESCRIBED above. What i was thinking was:

Okay you change the size and next time when you reopen a new window that changed size appears.

But when you restart the system the normal size of approx half the screen appears.
Can i change this default size.Yes It works if you drag the first window when you go online, but I have to do that EVERY time. Is there a default ??

Solve : Internet explore 6.01 not responsive to www. ????

Answer»

Every time I use my laptop away from my docking station, internet explore will not RECOGNIZE the “WWW” in from of a web address. I have to use http:// to access any websites. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?
I don't have to use EITHER of those   :omethods/restrictions. Have you monkeyed with your settings somehow? No I have not play with any of the settings, it’s actually a very weird problem. When my IBM R51 is docked in my home docking station, the problem doesn’t exist. But when I’m in ANY other network (i.e. t-mobile wireless) WINDOWS just takes forever if you type in a normal address of www.microsoft.com. You actually have to use http://microsoft.com to get an immediate response from IE. However if I use firebox, these problems don’t occur at all. I would stick with fire fox but several websites I visit frequently are activeX dependent and the pages don’t show up properly in fire fox.

Strange problem Huu? I have even tried to reset IE to its default settings with no luck.

Sounds like time to scan for adware/spyware and virii. What are you using? Since you visit a lot of Active X sites, you are asking for surprises.Google for "proxy SERVER cache"

Solve : video will not play?

Answer»

Hi, I am having a weird problem playing streaming video in IE.  When I try to open a video that is embedded in the page, nothing happens.  The spot where the video is supposed to play remains blank.  If I then download the file, it will play correctly.

I TRIED using Netscape and FIREFOX but I get the same problem.  Any other computer that I used could open the video correctly so there is no problem with the website.

I have tried running Spybot, Microsoft Antispyware, Adaware and PC-Cillin.  They have found some stuff but I have deleted all of it.

No problem there...Ariamaki Risenki.....I'm thinking that somewhere in your settings there is an ip address that was changed when you were using the proxy ...and you have FORGOTTEN to change it back....... This condition would explain why you can get to things using an alternate browser , but IE
will not work for you .

dl65  That's the thing!  Neither one contains an IP reference, at least not a changable one, and I erased both Proxy settings...

I am going to try gonig through a different Proxy, see if that will fix it...

It isn't even recognizing my connections existance inIE though...Ariamaki Risenki...... Set your proxy to automatic ......

Solve : darn ActiveX?

Answer»

I am unable to download ActiveX in order to INSTALL McAfee. I have Win98 SE. Ive tried Spysweeper and Ad-Adware SE. All was well until 4 days ago (haven't downloaded any new programs). I already had McAfee, it could no longer update or open the security center. I UNINSTALLED McAfee and cannot reinstall. I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to computers so any help will be greatly appreciated. Is the Ad Aware updated? How about getting Spybot to install and run?

I would run the uninstall and then re-install McAfee after a reboot. (Or leave it off and just use AVG Free which you can google for)

ACTIVE X is a risk anyway, and one that you don't have to take. I sure wouldn't just for McAfee.

I think you have some sort of critter in your machine.thank you for the reply.....everything is up to date. Without activex I'm unable to receive certain pictures and view my homepage completely (Comcast). I'll just KEEP plugging along. :-/First....

Solve : DSN Error?

Answer»

I just switched from dial-up to wireless and can no longer access secure sites. After entering my PASSCODE I get a screen that says:
"Page unavailable or DSN Error".
I have tried these things:
1. Checked SECURITY settings
2. Tried to restore system back to a date when it worked
3. Disabled firewall and popup blockers (McAfee)
4. Restored security settings to default
5. Slapping the side of the computer!

I'm using Windows XP and Linksys.
Other computers in house access these sites with no problems.
I'm out of ideas and am very new to the computer world. Help!If you can access normal sites but not secure then your connection is set up fine.
Although you have disabled the firewall (I assume internet security and not the ANTI virus), it sounds as though it is still blocking you some how. sometimes Windows firewall will enable itself if another is disabled.

Try completely reinstalling your internet security. I know it sounds a bit drastic but I deal with this on a daily basis, and with Norton too. For some reason if the internet connection is setup BEFORE the security is installed then it will accept that connection in its entirety. If the connection is setup AFTER then it falls under the security application which manages it as it sees fit!!

HTH
JimJim,
I tried uninstalling my security systems, but I still have the problem.
I'm also getting messages that say my security system is blocking ActiveX controls. Is this part of the same problem, or a whole different one?
Any other suggestions I can try? I'm afraid I may have to give up and hire someone to fix the whole mess!
Thanks-
TracyWhen you try and open a page that is blocked because of ActiveX the tools bar at the top will have a section that allows you to enable activeX for that SITE.

A bit like the blocked pop up message.

Open your IE - go to the secure page that you want and copy the full address from the address bar>

Open your run command and type CMD then .
Type in nslookup and then copy the address.
e.g. nslookup www.bbc.co.uk

If this comes back with four sets of numbers ping those - this is the ip address of the website.
e.g. ping 212.58.224.65

If you get 4 packets of data sent and received then your system has connected to that site ok.
Something is stopping the page from displaying.

In the same black screen type in netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

then ipconfig /release
then ipconfig /renew

try that!My info bar will tell me that ActiveX is being blocked, but it doesn't give me the option to allow. Clicking on it just leads me to "info bar help".

Here's what I got when I followed the last part of instructions:

'sslookup' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.Windows IP Configuration

No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while it has its media di
sconnected.

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

       Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0
       Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
But, it did show IP info for my wireless connection.

Any other ideas? Thanks for your help.
Tracy'nslookup' is a recognised command although 'sslookup' isn't!

If it is saying media disconnected then it's not detecting ANY connection, and you can access normal sites still?

Open your internet explorer. Click on tools, then internet OPTIONS, then the connections tab.

You should have no virtual dial up accounts listed and of the three options below that box should be selected 'Neverdial a connection' - this is because your pc isn't doing the dialing anymore, your router is.

Try right clicking the wireless network icon in your taskbar and selecting repair.
If that fails double left click this icon, then select the 'Refresh Network List' in the top left.

Do you still detect a network?Okay- I think I spelled everything right this time! I did everything you suggested. Here's what I got:

C:\Documents and Settings\Tracys>nslookup http://www.bankofamerica.com/

What's the procedure to check site availability? Website availability?    Do you mean to see if a domain name/ADRESS is already taken, or what? You need to give us more information for us to give you an accurate answer

[glb]Flame[/glb]ping  Thanks for your prompt response.

I mean, to find out whether a specific website exists.

I've gone to sites that KEEP me waiting and waiting and, at times,  I may get a message SAYING "xxxxx could not be found".  At one time I was looking for something LIKE, say, "CDcovers.cc" and I asked you about not finding it and you responded that it did not exist.  How did you find out?Ehm, how about typing in the adress in your browser and seeing if it works?  That would be a GOOD idea

I was hoping one of you would be able to help me. My Aunt lives in a remote area and cannot have high-speed internet. She asked me if she could USE her Bell Express Vu satelite for TV viewing as well as LINKING her to the internet. She currently is using dial-up and hating it.

Any suggestions?Only if the company she receives her satelite service from also offer internet via satelite. Check with the company and see. If they don't offer it, there are companies that do.I called her Satelite co. and they do not offer that service anymore.

Now I am looking into WEB ACCELERATORS for her.See if EarthLink or NetZero have local access numbers.

Solve : red x?

On certain web sites like msn.com, there are certain boxes that are not viewable.  They have a red x in a WHITE box in the upper left hand corner.  If I go to a web site that has charts they too are blocked.  How do I fix this.  I have cleaned out all temp files and restored the security settings. Are you on a dialup ISP that has Web Accelerator or some such gimmick? What are your security settings under Tools/Internet Options.

Has it always been this WAY, or what has happened that may have caused this?security settings are at default which is medium but EVEN on low I get nothing.  I am on dsl so I don't think that is the PROBLEM.  It almost seems like I'm missing some type of software.  Maybe I deleted it sometime by accident.  If you go to msn.com, the area that is highlight SPOTLIGHT shows up with the red x but none of the rest of it has a problem.Is this a new occurrence? Do you have your spyware/adware/virus SCANNERS up to date and being used?yes, I have spyware doctor and nortonBack to some earlier questions;

Solve : SQL server error?

Answer»

When i surf ONE webpage some part of the page is MISSING with following error.

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80004005'

Connection failure

why this is so?

This appears to be a WEBSITE PROBLEM. Either the site's server is down or OTHERWISE inoperable. Generally sites that use web scripting do so on the server side. You couldn't possibly be expected to have all the support software needed to run their site.

Either try the site later or contact them for more info.

Good luck. thanx, i think u r right. i will try later.its ok now

Solve : jpg upload errors and links not opening?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

i read the 'read this first message' and cicked on the two links in that message, but nothing happened, no links opened up for me. So my apologies if this subject has been covered.

I have a new computer running windows xp and ie 6 sp2.
I don't have any spyware programs installed, but i did have norton internet security, but uninstalled it.

The first problem i have encountered is when i try to upload jpg files to internet sites that sell photographs, i am getting an error message something like.....' error the jpg file doesn't appear to be a jpg file', even though i KNOW the file is a jpg. I have tried deleting cookies and internet history.

The second problem i have encountered is when i click on a active link in my email, nothing happens, a browser window doesn't open. I have the same problem when i do a google SEARCH, if i set my preferences to open links in a new window nothing happens. Also as already mentioned the links in the 'read this first' message don't open for me either.

thanks all for listeningThe reason your emails wont allow the active links to be opened is security feature to stop you opening spam emails to get your personal details if it's a site where you have to log in.

Are you using Outlook express or MS Outlook?

Go to the site where the photos are, save one to your system and then try uploading it back to the site.
Do you still get that error message?

Check your IE 6 security settings and the 'Advanced' settings in Tools - Internet Options to check if you have been blocked from doing this.upload to what server........Do you have some crazy toolbars installed? Thanks everyone for your comments,

i have managed to get my links working. I went to add/remove programs, selected ie6, clicked on the next button. Don't know what happened, but after that my links worked. I have outlook express.

I still can't upload my jpgs though.
I've been trying to upload them to istockphoto and stockxpert. I never had any problems with my old pc.
The error messages have only started since trying to upload using my new computer.

'Go to the site where the photos are, save one to your system and then try uploading it back to the site.
Do you still get that error message? '

I think i maybe already doing this. I save my jpg illustratrion to my desktop, then login to one of the above mentioned sites, fill in the online form, select my jpg, click upload, then after a minute or so get the error message telling me that my jpg isn't a jpg. I also have the ENABLE third party extensions option selected in my ie6 security settings.

I don't have any crazy toolbars.

I hope you guys will be able to help me with this.
I'm completely baffled, but then i'm not very techy minded.Just thought i'd let you guys know that i've installed firefox web browser and have managed to upload my files. I will contact microsoft about the problem with IE6.

thanks for all your comments and suggestionsI'm sure Microsoft will be very eager to help.

You're better off with Firefox for a lot of reasons.Empty your IE Temporary Internet Files & then give IE another try. What net  connection have you got.dun etc. Quote

Solve : hijacked back browser?

My back browser goes to MS-Search- not where I want to go.  I have run SPY sweeper, Ad-aware, and Norton antivirus.  Apparently something directs the back button to go to that website and I cannot find the culprit.  I am using Windows xp.  Any suggestions anyone? So no matter where you are, or where you've been, if you hit the back button you go to ms-search?

Is this right? You would have to edit the reg keys to stop it.That is correct but it HAPPENS most OFTEN when I am within a site such as Amazon or Ebay where I go back and forth within the single site. How do I go about editing the registry?  I am not SURE how to get in and even if I got there, how do I recognize what I NEED to change?http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php?id=289Download, update & scan with Ewido.

?
thanksDoes it happen to some websites or all.

In some websites there is a problem if you open in a new window.
They want it to open in the same page.
Forgot to ASK:

Are you right clicking and selecting open in new window.it happens on all pages that automatically try to open in a new window.  it also happens when i manually try to open any link in  a new window.  the window will appear but nothing else...no load bar or address or anything.

also forgot to SAY that the popup blocker is off.  of course the window wouldn't open even if it was on though.

any ideas??That windows will open even if the Popup blocker is on.

It blocks popups and not new windows.
Since when is this happeneing, did you do anything like installation of a new toolbar.Dr. Jones......By any chance , did this issue start after the installation of the recent M/S updates .......there were 7 or 8 a few days ago .....

Solve : IE~6 and OE~6 gone walkabout?

Answer»

I'm running winxp pro and YESTERDAY I suddenly found the icons for IE6 and OE6 were gone from my DESKTOP. Also the entries in Hide/remove programs are missing? I think both programs are still there however but I can't access them. If I click on a link in an email I get IE6 opened OK and similarly OE6 still SEEMS to be my default mail program? If I try to reinstall it says these program are ALREADY installed? I'm confused! Are you the only person with access to this computer?Absolutely no one else involved. I don't know what I did to cause the problem!Well that solves one variable. Can you create a new icon on the desktop for each? Ricght click there and select create shortcut and then navigate to the appropriate file.Run the scans for parasites too.

Solve : IE windows closed on its own?

Answer»

Sometimes my IE brwoser windows will CLOSE on its own all of a sudden without any error message. They just all closed while I'm reading the page. Not on certain pages either. Just anytime. Anything wrong with it? I'm on WinXP and IE6.Anything wrong with it?

Are you trying to be FUNNY?

Anything wrong with it? I'm on WinXP and IE6.

It sounds like there's definitely something wrong with it, don't you think?

Do you have the spyware/adware/virus scanners in place, updated and USED that are always listed here?

Ad Aware, Spybot, CCleaner, and AVG? (google search for them)

If not, what are you using? What happened prior to this or has it always been this way?
I KNOW there MUST be a problem...but I didn't concern much because it doesn't bring any other problem in fact.

It does happen long ago but come back recently.

I'm only running Norton Systemwork all the while.
Recently I installed SpywareBlaster but I don't notice any feature for me to scan for spyware. How does it work anyway?

As for the Firefox, if I'm not too stupid, it's a browser?

Thanks.  I ran Ad Aware and get rid of some threats.
I ran Spybot and no threat found.Did you update them before you ran them? If not do so and do it again.

Firefox is an alternate browser to IE.

www.getfirefox.comI have both updated upon running them for the first time as prompted.Download, install, update & run Ewido.
http://www.ewido.net/en/What is the advantages of this software on top of SpyBot?Not all scanners find all things.
If you know of one that does, please tell us.  Ha...understood...just like I guess.
Thanks.

Solve : History Folder Deleting Itself?

Answer»

I have been using my History Folder without any trouble. Until just recently it will not retain any information other than the current days sites. I do not know what version of Explorer I am using. But I do know that my history folder is set to retain 10 days worth of information. But every day when I go to OPEN the history folder there is nothing there.

Please Help

JESS  What is the ie set to...........How do I find that out?Since you're new here, Jess, be advised the best thing to do when you see a post from Merlin is to treat it like a blank space. Maybe you'll get LUCKY and he'll ask the question again, and PUT some effort into it this time. But don't hold your breath.

Jess, is there anyone else who might be using the computer besides you and deleting the history when they're done (perhaps in an attempt to hide where they've been visiting)? Quote

Solve : Can't open new windows?

Answer»

I can open web browsers okay but if I right click and selecet "Open in a new window" the window never loads. Same thing goes for when I click a link that automatically opens in a new window. The new window pops up and the microsoft colored flag in the upper right corner waves but the screen remains white and never loads. This just started a couple days ago, before then I could open new windows with no problems. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 9300 Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.60GHz 302 MHz, 512 MB of RAM and I am running Microsoft Windows XP Professional. Thanks for any help or suggestions!do you have an popup blocker from yahoo, or msn or google or anything else or perhaps the build-in popup blocker from sp2 (windows xp)?

greetz

blackberry  I do have a popup blocker that I believe is the built-in one you mentioned. I have experimented by changing its settings to: "allow popups from this site" on a trusted site but that did not help.  I have always had this same popup blocker and up until 2 days ago I never had problems with opening new windows and have never changed the popup settings.  I also have Norton AntiVirus and the day after this problem started (yesterday) I did a full computer SCAN and afterwards it said that it detected, fixed, and deleted 3 things. (I can't remember if they were all viruses or worms or what)  I don't know if this is related to my sudden new window opening problem. I have not noticed anything else wrong and I use my computer a lot If you got 3 things that Norton found, there are many more that it didn't. Download AdAWare, Spybot and Ewido and ruun them in safe mode. (They are free downloads, just google for them.) Be sure and let us know what you found.I have downloaded and ran Spybot and Ewido.  I am still looking for Adaware.  I LISTED their results below.  I still am unable to open new windows but at least I got a bunch of junk off my computer so thanks you very much!

Solve : Disabling or changing keyboard shortcuts?

Answer»

My problem is the backspace key.  We have a lot of systems running on the internet.  When some USERS press the backspace key to DELETE text, it ACTIVATES the back button of Internet EXPLORER (because of the keyboard shortcuts for IE).  Most of my users USE IE6.

Solve : 2 Problems w/IE6 - history & connection/memory?

Answer»

Running:  Win98SE, IE6, accessing internet via AOL9.0 dial-up (running IE6 with AOL connected in background).  384MB physical PC memory.

Have (2) relatively recent problems.  Have not performed any software installations, etc. that I can attribute the problems to.  Have scanned for spyware/adware.  Have "updated" Windows & IE with any critical updates.

1.  Can't delete any IE "History" entries (except "today's).  Was able to delete any of my "history" normally up until ~2 weeks AGO.  However, I CAN delete entries from "today's" history either in IE6 directly, or in Windows Explorer/My Computer/etc.  However, I can NOT delete any entries older than a day old (from "yesterday" back).  I have 39 weeks worth of "history" that I can NOT delete in IE, Windows Explorer, or MyComputer, even when not logged onto internet.  History items SEEM "locked".  Have even tried to delete via PowerDesk5, but have the same problem.  Program "attempts" to delete, but file won't delete from folder.
Note:  I have some "history" entries I would like to save, if possible (to go back to).  Would prefer not to delete my entire "history", if possible.

2.  The 2nd problem I have is extremely poor surfing performance (and premature web 'disconnect') which acts like a memory/buffer problem.

In the past few weeks, I can only surf to perhaps ~10 sites, before IE stops "connecting" to the web.  AOL actually stays connected in background, but IE can't "find" the pages requested.  AOL's IE browser also stops working, but AOL stays connected itself - just can't request a www page.  When it "stops working", can not access any new web pages or even refresh my current page.
I have "Clear temp folder upon exit" checked in IE "options".
I also try to clear "today's" history when this happens.
I have Windows Virtual Memory setting at max allowable (have tried "manage automatically" and manually setting to max. amount).
Have "Temp Internet Files Folder Settings" set to max. allowable size: 9654MB.
Have recently Deleted all Cookies

Any suggestions?  Change of settings (Windows, IE, etc)

If I try to download a large file, sometimes stops downloading before finished.

Tried to FTP some files today, and transfer stopped before download was complete.  Gave an error MESSAGE SAYING that "buffer" was full.

If I reboot computer, log on to internet thru AOL, as usual, can then surf again (for limited time).  But again have problems if surf to over ~dozen sites, try downloading a large file, or leave computer connected to internet too long (even idle).  Rebooting temporarily "fixes" the problem.    Seems like a memory issue of some type by program behavior.  Please help ASAP.  Thank you.use disk clean up...........and aol no comment.....How about starting with AdAware & SPYBOT (google for free download). Update them and run them in safe mode.

Do a disk cleanup (just above defragment icon)

Empty recycle bin.

Defrag the drive.

See if this changes anything. Thanks for the replies.  Have been running AdAware and Spybot for some time.  Have updated and run numerous times.  Have also tried disk cleanup and defrag - no change.  Have run Pandasoftware's online ActiveScan and Trend Micro's House Call - no viruses found at all.  However, since I have run House Call security scan, my IE page loads have been measurably quicker (unfortunately, could not get HouseCall to give me a scan summary - did the scan, but would never progress to the scan summary page).  However, my IE history is still locked and I can not delete anything proir to "this week".  There is still a problem, but IE page access times have improved slightly, but don't know exactly why.  Note:  I also agree about AOL- not exactly happy with it and know it is a resource HOG.  Would like to switch in the near future - but this is what I'm stuck with for now.  Also have 2 small children - like the Kid's AOL (KAOL) service and protection it provides, and safe surfing atmosphere (but that's about all I like!).
Any additional suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Solve : Cannot load websites fully?

Answer»

Whenever I go to any website it won't load. Whenever I go to google.com it loads partially. The 'google' title won't show and I cannot search either because it won't load. I know it's not my internet because I can go to sites on firefox just fine. I also noticed I cannot delete temp internet files either through the SETTINGS or though disk cleanup (it just stays the same). Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my IE and how to fix this? Can you delete the items in Safe Mode? Safe mode you should be able to do it. Do you have a registry cleaner or a SPYWARE SCANNER?Go to Add/Remove Programs, then Add/Remove Windows Components and remove the tick from IE, click next and let it run through.

When it's complete reboot your system.

Go back through the same process and put the tick back in.
