I have an Intel Pentium 166MHz w/MMX computer with 64 MB RAM and I use Windows 98. While attempting to renew my Norton Antivirus subscription online, the following message appeared: "Your browser is not supported because it is not considered secure ENOUGH to conduct an online transaction. Please upgrade your browser and then begin your session again." Can anyone tell me how to upgrade my Internet Explorer browser? If that doesn't work, you may be SOL -- Microsoft, in all its wisdom, no longer supports Win98 and below.And if you are considering a replacement for the Norton beast Avast and AVG are both very good and free...jandal, what version of IE do you have installed? If IE 6, you can't go any higher with Win 98. If you open IE, click on Help, About Internet Explorer, what version is shown, and what Cipher Strength?

Can you logon to websites using secure mode (https, not http), such as banking? If you go to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, and scroll down to Security, are boxes for "Use SSL 2.0" and "Use SSL 3.0" checked? Can you find more detailed info on SYMANTEC's site about the browser requirements?

And, as PATIO mentioned, now would be a good time to switch to another anti-virus program. Especially if you use Internet explorer. If you can't upgrade IE, here are a few good alternatives:

Everything is Nortons No new programs installed latelyanother thing is just yesterday everytime i try to close ie or a tab it tells me it has incountered a problems and shut the browser completly down.Try doing a clean with CCleaner (without Yahoo! toolbar) and see if that makes a difference.Do what CBMatt said. Then, if you still have the problem, maybe trying a different browser makes more sense than continuing to try to resolve the problems you're having with IE. I, and many others here, often suggest Firefox as an alternative. Thanx for the help guys have been off the site for awhile. I will try the fixes and see if it work and let everyone know the out come.

I just completed the malware removal process detailed in the forum as described. I then attempted to sign into my Yahoo e-mail account and was UNABLE.
I recieved an ERROR message that the browser (IE) refused to sign in (cookies rejected).
I then checked and reset my IE privicy setting to LOW from accept all cookies. I was still not able to sign into my account. I then tried to sign into my online 401K's web site which requires a user ID and password with the same results.
How do enable my access to these type of sites.

Hello all. Thanks for taking the time to read this. A few months ago, I encountered a problem with my IE. When I go to some websites, not all the links load properly. I am not sure if this is CONSIDERED a frames problem. I'll give you an example of my problem. FYI, I installed Firefox and have been running it since then. The only reason I've tried to fix the problem is I need IE to view my university's online registration/academic systems. So let me get to to the example:

If you go to the website www.adelphi.edu, naturally their home page is opened. My problem is here. Do you see the horizontal frame(?) of links, including "Prospective Students", "Current Students", etc.? And beneath it there is "About", "Academics", ADMINISTRATION, Admission, etc.

Well, this all loads properly on firefox. However, on IE, SEVERAL of the links do not appear. Instead, there are just gaps between links. It is not like I can CLICK on the gap with it being the link.

When I log on to their SYSTEM, the same problem occurs. There are links on their academic system that are necessary for me to do what I need to do.

If anyone has any solutions, please let me know. I consider myself an intermediately skilled person with computers, if it's any use to you. To do that ........ go to your desktop and simply push the PRINT screen key .....then click start /Programs/Accessories/system tools/Paint ......then open paint , click edit .......then select paste ...........Now you should have the PIC of your sceen ........click file ......then save as ........give it a name and save it to the desktop ....... Now come back to the forum ......... type your message and the use the brouse button to navigate to the pic you saved and attach it .....
It should now appear in your post as an attachment .....

1 x Antivirus software running realtime protection.. AVG
1 x Antispyware software running realtime protection.. Microsoft Antispyware
1 x Firewall, a better one than XP.munkeh....... Just looking at your last hijackthis log and it looks like you have a trojan causing this issue ....... IF after removing what Fed has suggested ...the issue is still PRESENT ..... I would suggest you try this ......

D/l the trial version of Ewido ( it's a fully functional 14 day trial ) then get the latest updates ...... http://www.download.com/Ewido-Security-Suite/3000-8022_4-10326287.html ..... Then reboot into SAFE mode , Make sure system restore is turned off.
Do you have more than one user account on this machine?

If you do , I would run a full anti-virus scan AND a Ewido scan on each of your user accounts ......... Delete anything found ........ then please post a new hijackthis scan when your finished .

I can't seem to get my laptop to run on safe mode, my desktop doesn't appear whenever i go into safe mode, it's just a blank screen, when i press ctrl+alt+del, there are no programs running :-?Safe mode takes quite a while to load, it shouldn't but it does :-?
What happens in normal mode?Normal mode is fine but safe mode takes absolutely ages and still nothing! I left it on for 10 mins to wait and see if the HDD light RESPONDS, nothing. All i see on the screen is the words "safe mode" and what windows am i running on the top of the screen, it doesn't go any further from there.

Since i can't get into safe mode, i ran Ewido in normal mode while the system restore is turned off, got rid of what ever it scanned, rebooted my laptop, turned back on system restore and i still can't get onto the website :-?I am assuming you are using XP to run the desktop icons and start menu in safemode if it doesnt run manually {ctrl+alt+delete) File-> newtask-> browse C:/windows and look for explorer.exe to run that should load your desktop but check to see if it is running on the process tree firstAre you located in China?

I don't really know how to begin this question. Let me just give an example. I open internet explorer. Go to my inotes email page and open my email account. A week ago I could minimize this page and reopen internet explorer to browse the internet while keeping my email account open. Now when I minimize and do the same it closes me out of inotes completely or whatever other webpage I may be on. It does the same thing when I go to my file menu and click on new window. What have I done to cause this and how do I FIX it?check for badwares...

I use optonline and my CONNECTION seems fine, AIM and MSN work fine. But, my internet doesn't work, everytime I enter it says ERROR: Host Not Accessible and STUFF. In my connections, it says AOL, which I NEVER use, but am using now, and it seems to be working fine. Does anyone know how to resolve my problem?When did this start? FlameCould be a problem with DNS Settings, or ISP's DNS server not working properly.

See if when you open you can access a website by IP Address

Instead of typing http://www.google.com in the browser, trying typing http://72.14.203.104/ (google's IP)

If it prints up google, then the problem is probably DNS related.

I've been trying to send an email with a mpg.file (64mb) but when I hit send, the file DISAPPEARS and I get "program not responding". When I was trying earlier to send a larger file, it WOULD appear to be sending, but when it got near the end it would say "error". So I reduced the size of the file, and now it won't even try to send! I have XP.

You must have attachment limit of your PROVIDER. Try sending a file in KB's (text, word doc etc...)and see if it works. Then come back...WahooLou...... I don't know what Email application your using ....but it may be too large ....... You could try COMPRESSING it to either a zip file or a Rar file or even better than that ....use a MESSENGER program like Msn or Yahoo or even Skype to do the transfer .......that will get the job done for you .

Hey there.. Slight PROBLEM. I am not usually a shortcut guy, but the Ctrl + Enter shortcut which automatically adds WWW and .COM before and after the name is suprisingly convenient... But has ironically stopped working for me..

Funnily enough the same problem has now OCCURED on my laptop too. I cannot find the solution to this problem anywhere and it seems like I am the only one to have ever experienced it.

To summarize: Ctrl + Enter shortcut has stopped working for me on. I use the latest version of IE (IE 6.0) and running XP SP1 (SP2 on the laptop).

Is this fixable? How?

I downloaded (and have now removed) Google Earth, and now IE is not working. I use AOL and it still works. I can't sign in to Yahoo! or EBAY. It seems like only sites like these which require a username and password are affected by IE's problems. I can view every other site on the Internet via AOL, but not sites that require me to sign on to enter. I tried reinstalling IE, but because it doesn't WORK, it won't reinstall because it can't "connect" to the "Internet" in the final STAGES of downloading. I have tried everything it seems. PLEASE HELP!

When using right click while in favorites to send something to email nothing happens.
I had a PROBLEM with outlook seeing the letter s in incoming mail and downloaded a new version and it solved the problem.
Now the right click shows send to email. I click and nothing happens. Is something missing ir is there a tool that isn't ACTIVE? :-?Look in IE>Tools>Internet OPTIONS>Programs and see if your new email client is set.Every thing looks okay to me. Have no problem attatching pictures. Just can't get it to work from favorites. BTW CHECKED for bugs and spys. Which operating system are you using? Have you been keeping-up with Windows Updates?

I've been searching everywhere for an answer to this same problem!!! I am interested in WHATEVER you can come up with as this as been driving me crazy for about a month now. Mine, too, worked fine until one DAY. I am curious about the ms updates because I did do a couple around the same time. I am going to try to remove them and see if that makes a difference. The only other problem I am having (occured also in the last month) is I cannot update anything anymore because suddenly I dont have "administrative rights" (I've posted this one already). My system is approx. 6 yrs old but have never REALLY had any problems until now.

I have a Pionex pc, running W98se. I am connected to the internet via SBC DSL, and have installed the SBC anti-virus, spyware, etc. I'm not really sure about firewalls, but I'm pretty sure SBC has one built in if I remember correctly. I use IE 6.0.2800.1106.

The unique Favorites Icons don't show up in my Favorites List anymore, the only image is that default 'e' with a page in the background.

I know that most of the sites in my Favorites have a favicon, I can't figure out why they're not showing up. :-?

FlameNothing abnormal about that. Be default, IE does not retain favicons after a restart or after the browser is closed and re-opened.

To make favicons permanent, you must either install some add-on or use a utility, such as FavOrg from PC Magazine (pcmag.com), or you must manually save the favicon to your hard drive, then change the icon for that website to the one you saved. To do that, select a Favorite, right click on it, select Properties, click on the Change Icon button, locate your favicon and save the change.That's bizzare. :-/

And no, I don't think I've changed any settings or anything. I just know that they were visible sometimes, and not others, but didn't pay attention to when or why. Maybe IE will modify that? That would be nice. Or maybe I'll switch to another browser anyway.

You can read their article about it at http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,13999,00.asp; the page also has a link for downloading it. Their utilities USED to be free, but no longer. For single downloads, for non-PC Magazine subsribers, the fee is $5.97. They also have an option for unlimited downloads for 1 year, for a higher fee, of course.

Here's some more info from their site: "The program also lets you associate any icon you choose with a given SHORTCUT, even if no favicon is provided. Since FavOrg must check the validity of an Internet shortcut before attempting to download the favicon, it automatically flags DEAD links as it goes through your Favorites list. I searched and can not find how to use a QVS Parallel Data Transfer Cable to take a big file of my old Compag Deskpro 486 to my Dell Dimension 8300? The Dell has XP Pro with service pack 2 and the old Compaq Windows 95 mncfp.......How large is the file your trying to transfer ?

Thanks! whats wrong with a short crossover cableI am not sure what that is, but my compaq has no other type of ports and no network as well. The only viaable way is parallel to my Dell's Parallel via the transfer cable.
I could SPEND more for another gizmo but this should work.

There is a Beta version of IE 7 available now and there was a PREVIEW of IE 7 Beta 2 released on March 20th.

Re your other issues , Without more info it would only be speculation as to why some vids wont open ( possibly a codec issue???)

Backdate is right, installed programs cause it generally. Google Toolbar, search etc. LOOK for the programs installed before this happened.
And I see Firefox icon there...Use it!

I recently had Outlook Express 6 loaded onto my computer and I can't seem to open any links in emails I receive. INSTEAD, I have to right click, cut and PAST the link in my address bar, then hit ENTER. The link then opens. Why is that? Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a SETTING in Outlook Express that allows you to change this?

Starting this morning, when I try to change websites from my homepage IE instantly closes. Im running XP with IE6 with Service Pack2. I downloaded and ran Microsoft Windows Defender from Microsoft and deleted all the crap and it still crashes. As soon as I SELECT the URL window with the mouse, or click the down arrow to visit history it crashes. Only way I can get to any sites is to change my homepage to google and google the site names. Now I've noticed I'm crashing Windows Explorer as well. I figure it was a virus, but nothing is being DETECTED. Any help? Before going through the scorched earth routine just give ccleaner & panda online scan a run.
Let it delete all that it finds & take note (save) the things it doesn't remove.
Being free it doesn't remove everything.

Ok whenever I go to a webpage with a song or VIDEO on it in a windows media player player. It says, Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. So I downloaded OPERA. Tried it and got this: Opera has encountered a problem and needs to close. Tried it in firefox, same thing. I eventually click ed details and it said it was a problem with the file, wininet.dll. I have looked around other places for this problem and some people have it. I still haven't gotten an answer how to fix it. Can anyone help me? hi guys, (hope this is in the right section)

i'm having a bit of trouble with the internet on my pc.
i re-formatted my pc yesterday and as soon as i used internet explorer to download firefox i started getting spyware pop-ups so i decided to download ad-aware.

it got rid of most of it, i then downloaded all the windows updates INCLUDING service pack 2 to help GET the computer up to date.
ever since then i can use the internet for about 5 minutes max and then i cannot open anymore pages, i dont get any messages or anything just a blank page.

i can only use the internet in safe-mode and its very annoying.

on windows firewall i've made sure that it doesnt block firefox,
i've also tried doing a system restore to when i first formatted the pc but i cant as there are no restore points.

any help would be appreciated. hopefully i've made the problem clear.

Reformat the computer and install some type of spysweeper and an anti virus software.. I would prefer Adaqare 6 and AVG Free and then you can connect to the net..

It is absolutely essential before connecting to the net that:
1/ A properly instituted and administered firewall is in PLACE and by that, I do not mean the Windows firewall!
2/ A properly instituted and administered antivirus solution is in place

Even then, connect only to Windows Update (Critical fixes only) and your anti virus update location. At this stage, a well maintained [highlight]HOSTS file[/highlight] can afford invaluable protection.
Before connecting to anything else, ensure that full anti malware protection is in place and then update that.

If you need to download an antivirus solution, firewall etc, do it now and BURN it to CD from what should be a certified clean system.

For some strange reason I cannot add new bookmarks. When I try they simply do not appear in my bookmarks list. It lets me open the bookmarks drop down list and then 'add bookmark to.." but the new address doesn't appear.

this might not belong here, but its kind of related, I am running windows xp media edition and last night my internet kept kicking me off msn, then it wouldnt let me do anything with Internet EXPLORER, when i used the trouble shooter for msn, it said my gateway is offline, so I tried going ONLINE in my GUEST account, everything there works excellent, but i have no connectivity on the administrator account - anyone know how to FIX this? im using an external "paradyne" dsl modem through hurontel to connect. Hi! I've been USING IE for many years and have come across a problem I can't seem to fix. I just got a new computer and when I use IE, I can't open a new window. All that happens is my open window refreshes. I have looked all over the settings and options and can't see anything obvious. FlameDon't forget the page setup options in IE either. Here you can set margins, headers and footers etc.
Better still, as printing from IE can be a very hit and MISS affair, copy and paste what you want into a word processor where you can edit it to your needs.Oh also, if you don't feel like selecting it, just say you want page one or two done. It will only print those pages and not the leftovers.

Strangely, while I am on IRC, when I open the browser and type the ADDRESS I get the following:

No buffer space available.

And it crashes instantly. Same happens when I try to change the SERVER I am on while on IRC.

I also TRIED to go on safe mode, but when I try to navigate and go to safe mode the keyboard crashes. Many others on IRC told me that this appeared as a (Ping Timeout).

Also, when that happens I can never go back on IRC or change the server and stuff.Which operating system are you USING, and does it have the latest service pack?Running Windows XP with Service Pack 2. 8-)

I solved my internet explorer problems by uninstalling the google toolbar.
Now it runs faster, and doesn't hang.

When Explorer OPENS a New window, it is offset on my screen. I see only half the window.
How can I make it either: Open in the Center of my screen, or Open Maximized?Explorer remembers the position of the last closed Explorer window. This was not a BIG issue until Tuesday, when we migrated our email from Lotus Notes to Outlook (Web access only, for the time being). Each email that I opened, opened in a new window, and that window was 1/2 off my screen, FORCING me to drag it back to the center. (I know, not an earth-shaker, but annoying none the less.)
