Solve : MS Word status bar in IE...why won't it display??

Answer»

I'm having a real issue with displaying the MS Word status bar in IE. I've been playing around with Word for a while, but maybe there is something in IE I can do instead. Are there keyboard events I can CAPTURE in IE using API or something? Look at this following discussion I've been in so you can understand my issue better:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.word.vba.general&mid=7c84df5f-de4f-4119-ac3c-cb9b8ed0afb6

Somehow I need to resolve this issue, so if there is something I can do in IE I would LIKE to try it.

Thanks for your time and help!

BrendaCan explain further what you want to do? It sure doesn't make sense to me. You want to see the Word StatusBar in IE? Is that right? Hmmm, how about putting an Excel StatusBar in IE? And, then maybe we can PUT an Excel StatusBar in Word. And, hey, then we'll ALSO put a Word StatusBar in Excel.

But, wait a minute. Word is Word. Excel is Excel. IE is IE. Etc, etc. Where does this notion of putting a StatusBar a for particular application in another application come from? What's the point of it?OK, try this. Create a simple Word Document. And you see the Status Bar the displays line #, column #, etc...right? Well, save this Word Document and then open up IE and drag and drop this Word Document into IE. Tell me if you still see the Status Bar from Word. I don't. Any work around?

And here is the link again:http://msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.word.vba.general∣=7c84df5f-de4f-4119-ac3c-cb9b8ed0afb6 I don't think it worked last time.Your link worked last time. I read through the discussion there. I'm still wondering what the point of this is. Why drag a Word document into an IE window? WHY?

Yes, I can drag a Word file into IE but, just as you say, there is no Word status bar there. I do not know of any work around.brendita....... I have read your post and checked out the post that you linked to........ However , like soybean , I am unable to figure out why you would want a MS word toolbar in the Internet explorer ...... If you have M/S Internet Explorer open and want to view something that you have created or saved in word FORMAT....... why wouldn't you simply click on the file button in IE ....then open and then choose browse ....... and presto there it is .......
Have I missed something ??

dl65 Sorry, I guess I haven't made myself very clear. What I am doing is using VSTO(http://msdn.microsoft.com/office/understanding/vsto/default.aspx) and displaying it in IE with an Intranet. Does that make a little bit more sense now on what I am trying to accomplish?Yes, that gives a little clearer picture. But, I'm not familiar with VSTO and still do not have a very clear understanding of why you want a Word StatusBar to appear within an IE window and, therefore, really can't offer any suggestions. You got numerous replies in the MSDN Newsgroups discussion you mentioned earlier, and I noticed some of those replies came from persons with the MVP rating. I'm inclined to think you've probably got as much expert response to this question as you're going to get.

I do see there's a newsgroup named microsoft.public.vsnet.vstools.office. Perhaps that would be another place to ask your question. Soybean

I was just hoping maybe there was something in IE that no one had thought of yet, but I guess I was wrong. Thanks for your time!

Solve : unable to view a "pdf" web page?

Answer»

when i attempt to view some web SITES, i GET a blank browser window with the word "done" located at the bottom left corner of the browser window indicating that my action was completed (same results using firefox or windows' internet explorer).

i've viewed the "options" and "preferences" selections in the BROWSERS, to no avail. i also viewed my internet connections via the control panel, but coulde not resolve my problem.

as an example, i get a blank browser window when trying to access the following website:
http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-utl/2003_pub_1066_module6.pdf

thanx in advance...daccs..... You require ADOBE Reader to be able to display pdf

http://www.download-it-free.com/acrobat/

This should resolve your issue.

dl65 I've found foxit to be much better than the adobe virus.
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
You should try it DL65.daccs......If you are using Firefox, there is no way besides changing the default action to open the file in the reader rather than the webpage. I spent a couple of hours with Firefox savvy people on the mozilla IRC channel attempting to figure out what was wrong, but we never did....

If you want to change the default action to "open" instead of "display" do this:
Click Tools>Options>Downloads>"Veiw & Edit Actions"

Scroll down to the PDF section and click it
Click "Change Action"
Set it to however you want. OBVIOUSLY, "use this plugin" won't work, so you'll probably want to use "open with this application" and select your Adobe Reader. The adobe virus, Aye?
Yup, only happened when I upgraded, THOUGH, only up from 7.0.1 to 7.0.3 or something like that, but it is totally incompatible with Fx. It's too bad. Worked well until then.

Solve : HOW TO UNINSTALL IE 7 BETA 2 (Windows XP)?

Answer»

This nightmare-ish browser has done it again. It caused severe problems.

As you MAY know, I couldn't get onto MSN or Visual Studio after the upgrade to IE 7. After a week of searching, I have finally found the answer.

If you have IE 7 and want to go back, follow these instructions:

1: Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

2: At the top of the Add/Remove Programs screen there is a checkbox. The checkbox reads, "Show Updates". Check it, and a list of updates will appear in the list. Scroll down to near/at the bottom, and the infamous IE 7 will be there. Click 'Remove'.

3: You will be prompted that a ton of programs will no longer work. Ignore that warning, and click Yes to continue.

4: Click Finish. You will need to restart the computer.

When Windows re-loads, it will be gone, and IE 6 or whatever you had before will be there.

A couple of notes:

I. This has only been tested on Windows XP. I do not have any other Operating Systems, and you may need to LOOK to find that option mentioned above. I don't know. If this is available on other OS's, please post where for future reference.

II. This is the ONLY way to remove this accursed beta. I have tried every other concievable method I can think of. If, by some quirk, there is another way, please post that, but I doubt there will be another method.

Well, there. I hope this HELPS some other poor frustrated end-user who got schiested by Microsoft with this browser. I still say FIREFOX is better, but hey, I need to get into my Visual Studio, not to mention my Email...You mentioned email. Do you use OE for email? If so, how did the installation of IE 7 beta affect OE? In other words, does OE get upgraded along with IE, as it has in the past with previous versions of IE? I recall reading somewhere that OE would no longer be bundled with IE. So, that's really what I'm wondering about.I use MSN for Email. When I 'up'graded to IE 7, MSN and Visual Studio both said, "This program requires Internet Explorer 6 or greater. Please update Internet Explorer, blah blah blah". Well, I couldn't install 6 because it said "A newer version is DETECTED and Setup will now close". I had to get rid of IE 7 first. I finally figured out how after stumping people at three forums, and this is how. Thunderbird for email is great....I've got it downloading email from four different accounts....

An alternative (and probably better) option is to right-click on the link to the pdf and SAVE it. You can then read it offline at your leisure. Thanks i will try that, have thought of uninstalling and reinstalling, I have wated up to an hour, it will not let me CLOSE or go to another page, but i can open IE and use it, but not aol. What is your pdf READER?Adobe 7.0Did you try downloading the file then READING it from your HD as suggested?
Google foxit to avoid using the adobe virus. My suggestion is Foxit too. It takes a lot to load Adobe.

Solve : I.E 6 Problem??

Answer»

I really didn't know what to title this thread, as I have no idea what the main problem is.

Recently, I upgraded p.c`s and I've noticed a few oddities with this p.c (mainly through I.E)

Whether it's a css problem or what, I really don't know. However, viewing a site - it'll sometimes appear strange like this:

http://img127.imageshack.us/img127/3302/ie8ra.jpg

The second paragraph with the heavily induced bold text and strange links?

Viewing it through Firefox, however, is much neater:

http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/2300/firefox6ur.jpg

So, I went onto another computer with I.E and viewed the same site. Wondering if it was just coded for Firefox. But, it looked the exact same or very similar to the Firefox link above. So, I presume it's something with my I.E

Also, on some sites I'll get WEIRD Asian text like this:

http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/4363/text8lz.jpg

Again, it's not there on other peoples PC's or on Firefox.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.Sounds like there's a fault with your IE 6 installation. Try reinstalling, and DON'T install any of the additional language SUPPORT files.

Alternatively, just stop using IE. In fact stop using it anyway. I do prefer Firefox....

But thanks for your ADVICE. I'll try that and see what happens.

Solve : pictures not showing up?

Answer»

I've had this PROBLEM for a few days now. I havn't changed anything on my COMPUTER since it started happening. When people post pictures on websites like livejournal or myspace, some of them won't show up. There's nothing there, not even a box with a little x in it. I've checked to see if it's a specific file format that doesn't show up, but that's not it, and it's not the website they're hosting their images on. I'm really confused...What is your connection to the INTERNET? What browser are you using? Which operating system are you using?

FlameI use roadrunner, internet explorer browser, and I have windows xp (I hope those were the answers you're looking for)When did this start happening? Do you have virus and Spyware protection? Is your browser accepting cookies? Any browser accelerators, etc.? Also, which operating system are you using?

FlameIt started happening a few days ago. I have spybot and EZ firewall. I'm not sure what browser accelerators are or any of the other STUFF :-/

If it HELPS, I saw a post similar to this a few pages back. It said to delete all the temporary files and stuff, and I did that, but it didn't help.

Solve : Problem viewing online images?

Answer»

When going online with Internet Explorer, images are distorted.

However, if I use a different browser (like Mozilla Firefox, for example), the images are nice and clear.

How can I fix IE (or can I?)In what way are they distorted? If you can send us a screenshot, that would be helpful If you don't know how to do that already, go into IE and find one of these images, PRESS the Print Screen key (usually above the number pad). Next click on Start -> All programs -> Accessories -> Paint. Click on Edit -> Paste. Next, click on File -> Save as. Enter any name you would like, and look just below the name, and make sure JPG or JPEG is selected. All you have to do now is come to the forum, and attach the file.

FlameOK, this attachement shows what an image LOOKS like using Internet Explorer....And here's the same image using Foxfire. Is this a dial up connection with some sort of Internet Accelerator, by chance?Wow, interesting question!

Yes, it is a dial up connection.

When I use IE, something called AT&T Worldnet Accelerator runs automatically (as far as I remember, I've never requested this and am not paying anything for it; it just kinda "showed up" one day.)

When I use Foxfire, I'll get a message as I close the browser that this AT&T Accelerator was not running.

Never THOUGHT of that before; hmmm....

(BTW, thank all of you for your help, I *really* appreciate it!)That's how those accelerators "speed up" surfing. They only send degraded images, so the overall page loads quicker. Try disabling this accelerator in order to use the browser of your choice. Funny how they do that

FlameWell everyone, what I've long suspected is now official: I'm a moron.

As soon as the accelerator went bye-bye, the images became nice and clear.

Sorry for taking up our time on this; again, I really appreciate your help.

It's not a stupid question if you don't know the answer. GLAD to see EVERYTHING worked out for you. Come back and see us if you have any more questions.

Solve : Please help, STACK OVERFLOW gone crazy****?

Answer»

Hi, my computer is going crazy especially tonight. I keep getting an error from Internet Explorer saying "stack overflow @ line (started with 351 and now it's all KIND of numbers.) I am running Windows XP Home Edition with the service PACK 2 on a 2 year old E Machine 10 gig HD and 256 mb ram. Can anyone help me please.

Thanks,

CarolAn eMachine should have come with a restore disk. Have you contacted them about this? I would. STRANGE thing......tonight it has not done it ONE time! Last night was a lot more than usual. Maybe once or TWICE a week and it's usually the "@ line 351." What does that mean?? Stack overflow?

Solve : Can't launch Internet Explorer?

Answer»

This is my first post. I'm still a little UNSURE of how to receive replies here.

Up until recently I was using Internet Explorer 6.0. I don't know whether I got a virus or what. I still have and had running when this happened, a firewall (Zone Labs) and Norton anti-virus (up to date). I installed Spybot and Webroot and now I cannot launch Internet Explorer. When I try I get the Open with which program Windows XP box. I can't even find Internet Explorer on my all programs (start menu) or anywhere. I am using Netscape and Firefox browsers.

Up until today I could not launch Norton anti-virus although it was running automatically on schedule each week. I fixed that problem by stopping Spybot from BLOCKING a program. I have no idea why Spybot chose to block it, but it did. I guess it found some spyware in the folder.

Also, I think I tried to DOWNLOAD IE 6.0 two weeks ago, but couldn't - I don't remember the reason - maybe I was doing something WRONG. Any help would be appreciated. I'm actually running pretty well with FOXFIRE, but there are some applications that require IE and can't be opened with Foxfire.try deleting webroot or spybot. Also, when I installed Zone Alarm, my internet didn't work until I re-installed that program. Check to make sure that none of the programs are blocking the internet too.

Solve : size of windows?

Answer»

greetings,

when i open new windows they usually are full screen size. i clicked on the taskbar to cascade the windows once and now new windows open at a smaller size. how can i get new windows to default to opening at full size??

phil phill ....If you simply drag the edges of the reduced size window and drag then out to the size you wish , they will open at that size ........

dl65 this hasnt WORKED, they still open as small sized - any other way?phill....... What operating system are you using ?

Have you tried RIGHT clicking in the TASK bar area ....and SELECTING undo cascade ......

I have tried using Win XP and thats the way it works for me .

dl65 i got xp but there is no undo cascade option As dl65 says you should just be ABLE to drag the corners of it to the size you want.

R0SSi can window by window but when i open the next ones they are still small.phill...... What happens if you open a folder ....is it in a reduced size as well ?

dl65 Many programs remember the position and size from the last time they were open. The trick is to close all but one of the windows that are open, maximise/resize that window as desired and then close it too. From then on, all windows should open in the format of the window you have just closed.

Solve : MSN stuck, need earlier version of IE?

Answer»

I DOWNLOADED IE 7.1 beta to see what it was like. (It's a FireFox mock-up, not worth anyone's time) Now, when I try to load MSN, It says I need a newer version of IE. Great. How do I go back to 6?Open your Control Panel and take a look in ADD or Remove Programs. Do you see IE 7.1, or some title for an Internet Explorer installation indicating IE 7.1, listed? If so, remove it.Sorry, it's not there. It IS in Add/remove Windows components, but TAKING it off and PUTTING it back on reinstalls 7.1. ALSO, I've tried:

Uninstalling and downloading 6.0 and running that setup. It says a newer version is installed, it must quit.

Just running the 6.0 setup. Same.

Installing 5.0 and upgrading. Same.Oh, this just keeps getting better and better! I can't run Visual Studio without 6.0!Try >this< Microsoft Knowledgebase article. If that doesn't help, I suggest TNT.

will my deleting the line in hijack do the job? ill have to see if my screen still appears.
i read somewhere that you can delete stuff from the registry - could this be an option if it still keeps happening?

Solve : outlook express logout?

Answer»

How can I logout from an OUTLOOK express mail account , in Outllok Express ?File--Exit and Log off identiy ?Hi

When i doing File-> Exit, it is exiting outlook Express, not asking for log off.

When i again opening Outlook Exp, it is opening that mail account (which i had previously), in the case when i have multiple mail account,

Another question:

In OE, mails from all my email address are automaically downloaded to a single account. Can i store emails from different email address in different
locations?Firstly what version OE do you use?
1. File--Exit and Log Off Identity option is available only if you have more than ONE identity.
But you can have password if you like...File--Identities--Manage Identities--Properties and check Require Passwords box...

2. You can store different email messages in different FOLDERS (I don't know what you mean by LOCATION) For this use Tools--Message Rules--Mails and you'll see various options for your choice.
Give names to folders and assign them to emails.

All above mentioned is for XP...By locations i MEANT different folders , or different mail accounts in OE , or different identities.

I am using Win 98.

Thanks for the reply and i will check that out. Quote

By locations i meant different folders , or different mail accounts in OE , or different identities.

All three of them are possible.

Solve : User Defined Shortcut Keys?

My son has inadvertently set the '8' key on my KEYBOARD's number pad as a shortcut key that maximises Explorer if it is running, which is obviously quite frustrating when trying to type in numbers.

He is unsure what he did to achieve this, and I have been UNABLE to fix it, so can anyone suggest how to de-activate this shortcut key?

Any help is much appreciated.

FlameOperating System : Windows XP (Home Edition)

When did this happen : I believe that he set the shortcut key by right clicking the mouse on a desktop shortcut/icon, clicked on properties and entered the shortcut key in the option there. I have changed the shortcut key BACK to 'none' in this properties menu, but the key is still affected even after re-booting the computer.

You may need to do the following as well

4. Internet Options
5. General tab
6. Remove cookies, temporary files and history

Kudos to Raptor.Do you use MSN Explorer? If not, why not remove it? To do that, go to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, click on Add/Remove Windows Components, and remove that little bugger.Removing MSN Explorer was a disaster. By doing that it knocked out any connection to the internet. When you connect with the XP internet wizzard it makes you use MSN explorer. So now I have it back. At least i can GET on the internet. So still have not FIGURED out how to make IE my default.Gary.....Try this ..... click start /All programs....then select Internet Explorer ...it should open and if you have no connection should open a connection wizard for you ......

let us know how you make out.

dl65 Have you tried default way?

1. Open Control Panel and double-click Internet Options.
2. Click the Programs tab.
3. Click to select the Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser check box.
4. Click OK.
5. Start Internet Explorer and when you are prompted to make it the default browser, click Yes.

Removing MSN Explorer causes no problem whatsoever IF you do not have it set as your default browser or have it set as part of your Internet connection settings. So let me try again. I've tried everything that was suggested. If I delete MSN explorer I have no way to connect to the internet. I think the problem maybe that I have not been able to install MS Office Outlook Connector for MSN. Does any one know anyting about this? To get on the internet now I have to use MSN explorer, then I CLOSE it and it allows me to still stay on the internet. Then I click on FIREFOX to continue. If I click on the Firefox icon nothing happens unitil I get on the net using MSN explorer. What I'm trying to do is get on like my old computer (Windows 98) where I clicked on Firefox icon and then it brought up my sign in connector to MSN ISP (not explorer). Also without getting rid of MSN explorer I can't get all my emails on one email site. Now some go to Outlook Express and some go to MSN explorer email. I want to solve that problem also. Any suggestion would be appreciated.
Well, now you mention MSN as your ISP or former ISP. Is it your current ISP? If so, that changes the picture here. I would not have made my previous comment about removing MSN Explorer if Ihad know your ISP is MSN. I'm not sure, but I believe you may need to connect via MSN Explorer with MSN as your ISP. My mother used MSN for awhile; I know she connected by opening MSN Explorer. Then, if she wanted to use IE, she could open it and use it. If I recall correctly, I believe she could close MSN Explorer once she had made a connection.

Hopefully, SOMEONE who uses MSN as their ISP will offer some suggestions. I don't think I can help further with this.Yes MSN is my ISP on the new computer. Yes, I do open the internet with MSN explorer. the close it and use Firefox. Can't believe there is no other way. Thanks Soybean for your responses.Problem solved in an unexpected way. Knowing I would not use MS messenger, I removed it from my hard drive. Now when I open the internet using MSN it does not bring up MSN Explorer. Can't use MSN Explorer without having Messenger loaded on computer. So I can get on the internet and then off to using Firefox. Fiefox - always a good solution! Windows Internet Connection Wizard to set up the connection followed by the browser of your choice.

I don't know anything about counterspy, but I run Spybot as well as Ad-Aware. On way more than one occasion Spybot has found issues that Ad-Aware did not.

What OS are you running?

If you are running 2000 or XP you can load the Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta 1 as well and Ewido anti malware 3.5.

Not saying this is your issue, but this would give you a little more positive backup that you don't have a "nasties" problem.Has this problem been solved? Apparently, you're talking about behavior of your web browser and it's not the same as before your hard drive was replaced. Can you GIVE an example? That would help CLARIFY what you mean.In my BB there is a place where you put your name and email. Before my HD was replaced, each time I went to that spot I could click the window and my name would be there, I could click the next window and my email would be there, now each time I go there I have to type it in again!Any and all sites you had previously registered to will need to be re-registered....this is because the stored info on the OLD HDD is now gone.Okay. Solve : My browser can't display characters right.?

INSTEAD of showing the usual letters and words in English, EVERYTHING shows up as musical notes and treble clefs. This doesn't happen on every page I go to. Note: I have had guitar pro and power tab software installed on my computer for about six months, could they have anything to do with the error? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.Try going to your Regional and Language options under Control panel. See defaults if its in English(Untied States) text or form. Check also your Languages and Fonts option under Tools, Internet options,General tab.Wow. Thanks. My DEFAULT font in my internet options somehow got set to power tab. Everything looks fine now thanks! That's good news

Solve : Windows Media Player on websites not working??

Answer»

So, Im trying to use this website that will allow me to listen to live radio.

The problem is the website requires me to use their player OR windows media player. Neither one works.

With windows media player. The play button is grayed but the stop button isnt. So I press the stop button, GIVE it some time, and press play.

And what do you know? Nothing happens, it just grays the play and make the stop clickable again.

So what do I do to start listening?

Im using internet explorer btw.

Safari doesnt work either.Get Firefox and see, if same thing happens.Just tested.

Same problem. In Firefox, go Tools>Add-ons>Plugin tab
See, if Microsoft Windows Media Player plugin is listed.

If not, get it here: http://port25.technet.com/pages/windows-media-player-firefox-plugin-download.aspx

If it's listed, download and reinstall it over the top anyway.

I got mine corrupted recently. It was listed, but it didn't want to work. Reinstalled over the top and it fixed the issue.I have just tried that. No changes.Follow this site and it might help you : http://zachd.com/pss/pss.htmlDidnt help.

Thanks anyway Jason.Exactly what website are you talking about here?http://www.onlineradiostations.com/radio-stations/usa/new-york/rochester/wfxf-95.1-fm-the-fox-classic-rock-music/details.htmlIt's not an issue with your computer. It's an issue with the website. They give you three options for listening: WMP, Real Player, or their own Online Radio (OR) Media Player. The links for both WMP and Real Player are grayed out, probably because they want to push people to use their proprietary player.

There is nothing we can do to help you with this. I looked around and all stations on that site are like that. You should contact them and ask why:
http://www.onlineradiostations.com/contact/It won't play for me in Firefox (after very long loading).
In IE, it asks me to enable WMP, which is already enabled.
In Opera, it never fully loads

Nope.Well thats the thing, I can click on CERTAIN buttons on the WMP. The OR player has no buttons I can click. And I cant even click to go to the Real Player (Probably cause I dont have). On WMP, it lets me press Play, but not a *censored* thing happens, it just grays out play and makes Stop clickable, like if it was really going to play.

But nothing happens.

I got worried that it was my internet, unfortunatly my mp3 player is broken and I normally listen to the Bob & Tom show.

Trying to LOOK for an alternative free route and saw this website in a google search. It works here: http://www.fox951.com/main.html

Haven't tried it yet. Do you know what happens when the final/official version of IE9 is released for people who have installed IE9 beta? Will they need to uninstall the beta version and install the official version or will the beta version GET updates as needed to make it, in EFFECT, become the final version? If it's the same with IE8 i believe the Beta needs to be removed and the full ver. installed...

Solve : Internet Explorer 8 freezing problems?

Answer»

I E 8, Windows XP
constantly freezes and then"this tab has been recovered" appears

Please help with a detailed reply Thank you!First, use an application like 'Lavasoft Ad-Aware' to check for any spyware, ROOTKITS or browser hi-jacks.

If nothing detected, identify if you have any bad or conflicting browser BHO's (Browser Helper Object)...

In Internet EXPLORER by clicking on Tools, then Manage Add-Ons.

First disable Microsoft's own Spyware like 'Research', 'Discuss' and the annoying 'Microsoft Live Sign-in helper' if it's there.

Temporary disable:
1) Any 'Java' Plugins
2) Any 'Adobe' Link Helpers
3) Any 'IEMonitorBHO' Plugins like download manager helpers, etc
4) Any item with '(Not Verified)' labeled on it

Update your Shockwave and/or Flash Plugins if you use them.

If one or more of them are the cause then remove, re-install or update them, re-enable those others which you use and consisted safe.1) Ignore the above post. First of all, AdAware has not been a viable option for YEARS. The current best of breed for spyware scanning are MalwareBytes and SuperAntispyware. Second, to run IE without add-ons all you have to do is go to START - RUN and type: Type iexplore -extoff (then press ENTER).

2) Try a different browser (ie, Firefox, Opera) and see if the problem persists.I understand Ad-Aware has lost it's former high standing but, OTHERWISE, Azzaboi's post seems like a logical troubleshooting approach. Simply running IE with all add-ons turned off could proove that one or more add-ons were the cause of the problem but it would not reveal which specific add-on was the cause. More troubleshooting would be needed, and that seems to be the logic behind Azzaboi's post.Quote from: soybean on September 22, 2010, 09:29:11 AM

I agree that running IE without add ons makes sense. It's his instructions on how to get there that I'm correcting. But thanks for the input.

Solve : Problem Watching Videos in Firefox and Internet Explorer?

Answer»

Hello!

I have a problem...my Dell Inspiron laptop is in the habit of suddenly refusing to PLAY videos on Youtube, Google Video, or any other site. And by suddenly, I mean that I will be able to watch videos absolutely fine for a while, but then (i.e. if I open up a different video or pause the current video and then try to resume it) the video will not work...and after that one instance, no videos will work. If I am using Firefox, it says that the Adobe Flash Plugin has crashed after 45 seconds. If I am on IE, the entire page just freezes when I try to watch any video. If I shut my computer down for a while and then return, I will be able to watch videos for a while, but then they stop working again. This has happened two nights in a row. What can I do?

I have tried: Switching browsers, making sure my Flash player is up-to-date, making sure my browsers are up-to-datemy guess is youre running out of free space on that drive...Quote from: patio on September 26, 2010, 12:46:23 AM

My hard drive? It says I have 186 GB free (0f 218 GB).

Have this been going on just recently or for how long?
Any added/downloaded software recently?
Have you check your Manage add-ons if Shockwave Flash Object is enabled and its version? This has just been going on recently; within the last WEEK, I think. The last thing I downloaded was Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, but the problem OCCURED before I downloaded it. I'm not familiar with Manage Add-Ons; I searched for it and opened it up, but I don't see Shockwave Flash Object listed anywhere.Quote

Ah, okay...under Manage Internet Explorer Add-Ons (Toolbars and Extensions), I don't see anything Shockwave.
Under Plugins in my Firefox Add-Ons, I have:

Shockwave Flash 10.1.82.76
Shockwave Flash 10. r82

and

Shockwave for Director 11.5.8.612

They are both enabled.Sorry to post a new reply, for I don't see the "Edit" button anywhere...?....but I don't mean to bump.

Haven't been having the problem at all lately; don't know what was going on, but videos are working fine consistently now. Will call it case closed.

Solve : Browser Won't Connect to Photobucket.com or Images?

Answer»

I am having this issue for several DAYS in a row - cannot get to my photobucket SITE....is their a photobucket HELP site or anyone have any IDEAS?What error or MESSAGE are you getting when you try to go to Photobucket.com?

Their "help" site, which is actually just a bunch of answers to common problems and not very helpful, is here:
http://pic.pbsrc.com/help/PhotobucketHelp.htm

Not sure if you'll find what you're looking for there, but it's a place to start. But the error may not be on their end, it might be on yours, so do try to explain what's happening in as much detail as possible.

Solve : Favicons and Chrome?

Answer»

OK just a quick one, I changed the favicon for my website to a personalised one and no matter how many times I restart chrome the favicon is still the old one. On IE and FF it has changed STRAIGHT away. I tried clearing the cache on Chrome with no joy. Any ideas what this COULD be?
Using chrome 6.0.472.63

Thanks in advanceFunny, I've heard of this issue a lot with Firefox, but not with Chrome.

Anyway, try these in this order:

1. Delete any bookmarks in Chrome to the site.
2. Clear your browsing and download history.
3. Restart Chrome.
4. Visited the site and bookmarked it again.

Another solution I just found involved deleting the file that stores those icons for Chrome, forcing Chrome to create it again with updated icons, but this will delete ALL favicons, not just your site's.

Anyway, hope that helps out a bit, Mulreay. Let us know how you get on.

EDIT
I assume this site you're referring to is that Space and Science site in your signature (which I'm looking forward to digging through eventually). I'm attaching the favicon as I see it now.

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Chrome is not all its cracked up to be....buggy at best.As quaxo suggested, you can try deleting the Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Thumbnails file, but the problem may lie with your HTML, as Chrome uses favicons a bit differently. In your HTML, you have the following line:

Code: [Select]<LINK href="/favicon.ico" rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" />
Underneath that, try adding this line as well:
Code: [Select]<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/ico" href="/favicon.ico" />
OR

Code: [Select]<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/ico" href="http://spaceandscience.co.uk/favicon.ico" />
Very similar, I know, but it sometimes MAKES a difference. Thanks for the replies guys. Quick run down of what I did/happened.
I tried deleting all the bookmarks pertaining to my website and then cleared the history/cache etc re-added the bookmarks but to no avail it still remained at the old favicon.
I then removed the bookmarks again and tried deleting all history using Ccleaner and this had the same result.
So I tried un-installing Chrome and re-installing whilst removing all history and settings, this returned the same result as the favicon was still the old one.
The HTML issue that CBMatt suggested was interesting but I used FTP to add the favicon so was not sure where to start with that.
I then looked at this folder option that quaxo mentioned (thanks for that) and used the directions that CBMatt included to find the correct file (Thanks for that), and removed the thumbnail file.
I then restarted chrome and guess what all the favicons were blank, so whilst holding my breath I typed in my URL and BINGO the new favicon was there. I then just ran through some of my other bookmarks and they were all added correctly.

Thanks a lot for the help guysGood to hear, Mulreay.

Solve : IE8 and Win XP Pro - unable to run or download reader or flash from Adobe?

Answer»

I am having a real hair-pulling experience trying to download Adobe reader and flash as well as running some website OPTIONS on certain sites, like I am unable to play anything on YOUTUBE Videos or make purchases on website: http://www.luckyvitamins.com. I get "error on page" and I can't seem to find out why! Any suggestions? Please help this old man before my FRIEND puts out a hit on me......Thanks in advance.Remove any current installation of Adobe Reader or Flash.
Start -> CONTROL Panel -> Add or Remove Programs

Restart your computer. Then download and reinstall both:
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Instead of Reader, you could also try Foxit, which works just like reader, takes less space, and runs faster. It's also free:

Solve : address bar still showing history even though deleted it?

Answer»

having a nightmare trying to figure out why internet explorer isnt removing all history.....have tried delete browsing history OPTIONS in tools etc.....have also tried regedit from start to remove URLs..thats showing nothin in there
Yet when i click back on address bar it STILL shows a list of history and favourites.theres a little icon with a red X next to them which says delete but they just come back again after pressing this
Any1 GOT any ideas? You could try running CCleaner to see if that clears the cache. The PROBLEM is that what you want to get rid of is not the same as History and Favorites. To get rid of these sites, you can check the page below:
http://www.pchell.com/support/delete_address_bar_urls.shtml

However, if you would rather avoid the REGISTRY, then download/install the program Mulreay suggested above. Before running the Cleaner, simply make sure you check Recently Typed URLs. That should take care of it.

Solve : access to deleted history?

Answer»

My girlfriend seems to be able to access my deleted HISTORY even though i clear all private data?? how does she do this on mozilla firefox? Not sure what she's doing or what you're not doing to clear everything.

Are you clearing recent history? (Tools -> Clear Recent History...)

If that doesn't get rid of everything you want, you could try using CCleaner, which will clear leftovers from most major browsers. Only use it to clear your browser history, do not use the registry cleaner function unless you really really know what you're doing.Personally i'd start looking for a new girlfriend...
But thats just me.Quote from: patio on September 25, 2010, 10:32:04 PM

IT STILL DOESNT ANSWER THE QUESTION WHICH IS SIMPLE??? ....... HOW IS SHE ABLE TO ACCESS IT WHEN I HAVE DELETED HISTORY???

Easy with the capital letters, hotshot. If this is how you communicate with your girlfriend, I am surprised she still is choosing to occupy that position. Possibly you did not clear everything that you thought you did. Since you are short on details and long on CAPITAL LETTERS, this thread is pretty much a guess-fest. What is it exactly that you are doing with your browser that you don't want her to find out about? BELIEVE me, when you have major issues of trust and communication in a relationship, the last thing you should be worrying about is your browser history.

It would be impossible to know what your girlfriend is doing on your computer. Perhaps you should ask her.

In the meantime, we have given you what suggestions we could with regards to clearing your browser history.wow salmon trout you have a short fuse dont ya haha..... oooopss i am soooo sorry for using capitals.... whao crime of the century. Salmon doesn't have a short fuse, he is just pointing out (and rather politely) that when capitol letters are used, that this is generally accepted that it's the same as shouting, and USUALLY people do not like being shouted at!!

And, being as you have only given ONE detail for us to play with, then you should be thankful of the interest in your topic.

Have you got everybox ticked in the 'Details' box
Have you set it to 'clear everything' and not 'clear last hour'

IMHO she has probably remembered something from when you DIDN'T clear the history and is using that golden nugget of information to make you sweat, because you're obvously up to something that you don't want her to see, as you trying to clear the history all the time.Quote from: reddevilggg on September 27, 2010, 04:32:18 AM

Solve : One particular site does not load in my browsers?

Answer»
Hello,

I really hope I can get some help here. All of a sudden one site (sitesalary.com) is not loading in my browsers (IE6 and Firefox 3.0.7) Every other site loads up. Sitesalary.com was working fine too until Saturday but from Sunday it just stopped working....As I said I have no problem at all with any other site......

I have XP Professional.

I hope someone can SOLVE this one. I am stumped.works for me. Has any one else done anything with your comp before it stopped using that site? Did you download anything before it stopped working? Is this just some clever way to advertise that site?Quote from: mroilfield on March 25, 2009, 08:18:19 PM

No, I am not advertising this site at all. Not only this is a wrong place to advertise that site, but also there was no affiliate link. It was a sincere question.

The site works. Last NIGHT I was at a friend's house and I tried it from her computer and it loads fine; hence my question...

I have thought what I did that night on INTERNET and could not remember. The thing is that every other site loads fine..I am not having any problem with anything else either. I think I will install XP again and see what happens.

That's a bit extreme, I'd say. You should be able to resolve this without resorting to that extreme measure. Checks your hosts file. See http://accs-net.com/hosts/what_is_hosts.html and http://accs-net.com/hosts/how_to_use_hosts.html. If your hosts file contains sitesalary.com, then remove edit the file to remove sitesalary.com from it. Rather than reinstalling, you may as well try a standards-compliant browser such as Opera. (Don't ask me what that means!)check whether you have any firewall software installed on your computer, especially norton which is known for blocking banking websites

turn off all the firewall softwares. incase you are not sure where to find the settings then try "SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING".

if the website is opening in the safe mode with networking then you can be sure that some THIRD party software is blocking it!Quote from: NotQuiteNovice on March 27, 2009, 11:03:50 AM

I know what Opera is -- I had tried that too before posting my question...So I looked into the hosts file and it had only 127.0.0.1 localhost in it.

I am running AVG (paid version) so I turned off the firewall, and even stopped AVG and still did not work..

But there is something else I found. When I connect to the site with another IP, I am fine. It loads up fine. I tried that last night from smarthide.com (not an advertisement) -- When I go to the site and use their anonymizer, I can browse the site...

Is it possible that sitesalary serve is rejecting my ip?See, if you can access http:\\208.100.51.102

Broni, this works, so I am guessing name is not being resolved. So how do I go about fixing this? Is it something to do with DNS?

Thanks..I did not think of typing ip address...

Is it not best to stick with the ISP and have the google toolbar?
Sorry this is VAGUE, but WOULD just like to have PROS and cons.

Solve : One website won't load?

Answer»

I've been a regular at smelly-cat.org for years, but now the website won't load for me. Firefox gives me a blank page and IE gives me the typical "cannot display the webpage." It's been 3-4 days. I haven't experienced this problem with another website. I've cleared my cookies, deleted temporary internet files, RESTARTED the computer and made sure the site is up through downforeveryoneorjustme.com.

I recently switched from BitDefender Total Security to the free version of AVG. I believe - though I'm not entirely sure - the website stopped working when I uninstalled BitDefender. I am running Windows XP, I don't recall making any other significant changes to the computer and I've recently scanned the computer for viruses with BitDefender, then AVG and Spybot Search & Destroy. I am not sure what to do next.

Help would be very appreciated. Here is something simple.
You know how to change you DNS to a STATIC IP, right?

Open DNS nameservers are:
208.67.222.222
and
208.67.220.220

Se if that makes a difference.
If they block a site, there is a reason
http://www.opendns.com/

Or. you can use a proxy server
Google free proxy server

Try going to command prompt (Start &GT; Run > "cmd"), and type:
ping smelly-cat.org

If you get a response, then it's your computer that has the problem. If not, then it's the website's problem.

I got a response, by the way.

Solve : CANT DOWNLOAD ANYTHING & CANT ACCESS CONTROLS?

Answer»

I cant even begin to tell you how frustrated I am! boooo!

For starters, I have a problem with Internet Explorer (or some mutation of it): I cant download anything from net...and I mean ANYTHING! Not even a file that could help me with this JAM.

The normal WINDOWS I.E has been replaced with a "windows live" explorer thing. all the normal features like , file, edit, view, favorites, etc...have been replaced by buttons for windows live gallery, msnbc, msn butterfly, faves for windows live, groups, a hammer (help I assume bcz clickin it does nothing!!) as well as a help button (a questionmark icon--it does nothing either when clicked.) On the title bar at the top, and the task bar below just has a letter E with cirlce (IE icon).

If thats not cool enuf to garner sympathy..while typing this, I realize I cant use the delete button (have to use the backspace) and I cant right click to copy&paste. WEEEE!!

Someone suggested going into the control panel, and clicking the internet options file there...well that would be great..if I could actually OPEN the folder!!!! I click..it just sits there..stares back at me thinking, "What an idiot."

Soo..if my download issues, my defunct basic windows capability and inability to access internet options all combined, arent a whirlwind of excitement...I have no windows xp disk to reinstall anything if that is the answer to this dilemna! or if havin me go download was the answer..cant do that obviously.

Im so thrilled, I could just stab my eye out with a red pen.

A regcure 1.52 was run to SEE if it would fix anything. it really didnt. A sys.restore a couple diff times didnt help either. I have win xp with service pack 3 by the way..

Here I am , in all my glory...whimpering and waiting for someone to guide me away from tossin my computer. Any takers?? Anyone?

..please??... Borrow an XP CD of the same version and Service Packs...
Repair Install of XP

I suggest reading it thru so you understand the procedure and prining out a copy for reference...
If done properly all your apps and data will be intact.
If done improperly your apps and data will be gone but you will have a fresh install of XP...As Patio says, sound a major prob.
Could be worth trying out what you have previously done via Safe Mode before you reinstall tho'
RegardsI have this exact PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!!

Been driving me NUTS

I dont have a disk!Is there any other suggestions.

HeeeeeeeeeeelpI have asked everyone I know about this...no one has a cd with service pack 3.

Also, I have found that it ONLY is an issue with the internet. I can cut & paste in word an all other documents. JUST INTERNET!

Since I cant dowload anything, I cant install a fresh IE or firefox or anything.

Any other hints??Give this a go unless you've already tried......
Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add/Remove programs>Set Program Access and Default...Uncheck Microsoft windows and check Custom and select IE

Or

Can you get into Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>Reset Internet Options

Or

If that's no go, you may have a malware issue....perhaps post the SCANS if you can in the other AV forum...seems like IE has been hijacked.

Solve : "Page Can Not Be Displayed" after 5 mins of working IE?

Answer»

I have Windows XP and have been experiencing disrupted internet service for the past few days. When I start my computer and access IE, it works properly. However, about after 5 minutes or so I start to get "this page can not be displayed" or sometimes "this link appears to be broken." I constantly restart my computer so I can use the internet. I thought it was my modem or service. I've called my service provider several times and they said it's not their service, but it does appear something is blocking my access. I have SYMANTEC Antivirus program. They SUGGESTED it was a firewall or something, but I did try to turn it off and it still didn't work. They ALSO said to put my computer on safe mode? I'm not sure what to do next! I just want my working internet to work! What are the modem activity lights doing ? ?
How did you try to turn off Symantec ? ?
To enter safemode you TAP F8 repeatedly on power up and before you see the Windows logo page......WARNING: let it load completely.Thank you for your help! It randomly starting working a few days ago? I'm not sure what the problem was. I unplugged everything and then put it back together. Maybe it was a loose cable or something.

Solve : Internet Explorer won't connect to DSL, but Firefox will?

Answer»

Hello All. I recently attempted to install Norton 360 2.0. I've installed previous Norton anti virus before with no PROBLEMS. This time, it wouldn't CONNECT to the internet through IE. It tried to dial up a connection I've not used in years. I deleted those connections and was left with just the Broadband connection. No dice. I un-installed the old Norton. Still won't work. Tried to rebuild the connection through the control panel-nada. STRANGELY, my Firefox still works so I downloaded the newer IE 8. Still nothing. I then un-installed Norton. Nope-didn't work. Computer savvy associate I called said to get Revo un-install because the remove program application might still leave FRAGMENTS behind. I did and no it still won't connect. I then un-installed the new Norton 360 and IE 8 followed by a clean up with Revo. Through Firefox I downloaded the IE 7 that I had before with no add ons. Still can't connect. When I try to open IE, the page itself will appear but not connect to MS, Yahoo, Google or anywhere. It gives me an option to run a diagnostic. When I do it says cannot connect to HTTPS, HTTP and FTP. It suggested I try turning of firewalls. I did that with Windows and I don't think F'Fox can be turned off. Didn't work. If I try un-installing F'Fox, I won't have any connection to the outside world. If Firefox wasn't working fine, I'd think there was a problem with the DSL. I can't run Norton through F'Fox cause IE seems to be the default. Besides, some things are easier to download with IE. If anyone can help me, I promise happy thoughts for you forever. Thanx, AgBy the way - I'm using Windows XP and I'm connected directly to the DSL modem, no wireless.Somewhere in IE there is a place to set some LAN options. I think is is under Tools Connections. You need to set up the IE LAN settings so that IE will allow a proxy.
And you may even have to reset the computer to have IE get it right.

Oh, here it is. Tools internet connections LAN settings automatically detect settings.
I think that is all you need.Thanx Geek - Yeah I just tried that a couple of times. Still the same, no connection. THANK you for you the input - AgTry calling your IS provider. For me i think there is something wrong with the connection.Run Norton Removal Tool: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039If you have nothing to lose...try tcp/ip fix

http://www.download3000.com/download_7677.htmlThank you for the responses people. For some reason, I can't download the removal tool from Symantec. It just times out. Could it be that I'm using F'fox to download? I'll try again tomorrow from work using IE and load it onto a flash. Also, I'll try to call AT&T about this, if I can actually get someone on the phone. What does tcp/ip fix actually do. I'm not a techie by any means and I'm unfamiliar with that. Thanx again to all for your input. I'll let you know the results tomorrow - AgDon't run two fixes at the same time.
Start with getting rid of Norton, first.
I'll upload Norton tool for you to some other site, and I'll post download link.
Just give me a few. Here you go: http://www.filedropper.com/nortonremovaltoolAG...reread your first post and I missed the fact you do have a connection with Firefox, so you don't want to use xp tcp/ip ....It's only for when there is no connection at all....Very powerful little program. Yeah for me, stay away from Norton anti-virus it's crap in my opinion. Call your internet service provider as it sounds like your connection is down from their end.

If you can install avg free, download it from work put it on your flash. Install on your PC and if you can update it your internet connection is up and it's a configuration problem.

http://free.avg.com/download?prd=afe#tba2

If you can install this and update it post back and we can take it from there.

Your choice though if you don't want to go with avg. If you can just get anything on there and try to update it.

Hope you get it up soon.... if you pardon the pun

Rgds,
