Solve : unable to access Gmail?

Answer»

Hi there

My Gmail suddenly stopped working. I can access Google but when I select Gmail, all I get is a very slow response and nothing changes. I'm using Windows XP SP2. And I'm on ADSL broadband.

I have also NOTICED that a lot of web pages cannot be displayed. And other ones are OK.
If I search for Gmail in Google, I get all the various items referring to Gmail, but whenever I select one of these, my computer sure DRAGS its feet and nothing happens.

Can anybody HELP please.

BertI suggest resetting your router and modem by unplugging their power chord for about 20 seconds.
Then plug them back in and see what happens.Could try it in this browser please.

Try deleting your browsing history, i.e. temporary Internet files, cookies, and history.

I recommend getting CCleaner (yes, with 2 c's) for stuff like this. It also gets rid of unused programs and cleans up your registry if you want it too.

It doesn't remove programs but it is a very good disk CLEANUP utitlity and a safe registry cleaner. Yes, it can be used to clear browser cache instead of doing that from your browser.Quote from: soybean on August 31, 2008, 02:00:54 PM

Solve : IE Dropping Out?

Answer»

Am being driven to distraction with this problem. I have had 2 "experts?" try to fix the problem to no avail. After the puter boots up, rarely are we able to receive emails or access IE, this usually results in having to turn the modem off, leaving it 3 MINUTES or so and then turning the modem back on. When we are eventually able to connect, it will only continue to do so. At TIMES we are able to send and receive emails and not access IE, other times, NEITHER. In any session we are having to turn the modem off and on regularly. I thought perhaps it was a modem problem, however, if I can access Outlook Express and not IE this may not be the case. Please can anyone help - going nuts! What type of connection is it?
What IE version?
Are you saying, that you can have Outlook Express running, and connection won't shut down, but it does when you access IE?
Did you try Firefox?Broadband connection
IE 6
I can have OE running and also IE and am able to access emails but not IE. Other times neither will work.
Haven't tried Firefox - is this what you would recommend?Does the Internet drop out even if you're not using it?Good question from Carbon, and yes, try Firefox, and see, if same thing happens. It doesn't make sense to me, Jenny, that you should have to switch browsers so that you can use you internet connected computer. I'd assume your using Windows XP and have fully updated your operating system. I don't know what kind of alledged experts you've had try to fix it for you. I'd only assume that you have check your internet settings youself and are confident that you have no spyware by running several spyware removal applications like Windows Live OneCare. Seriously, this may indeed be the only single piece of software you will need to protect your entire home of small business network. Not only is it a Microsoft managed ANTIVIRUS solution with heuristic scanning and auto update, in provides Microsoft managed Anti-spyware software scanning and complete removal with Microsoft managed updates again, in additions to the new and improved firewall layer with new and easier to understand settings, in goes further to monitor your browsers phishing filter to protect to you from entering information into the wrong webpage while auto updating your operating system automatically and again goes further still to providing full scheduled network backup functions for the users automatically. Still not enough for you? Keep in mind that it does this for all of the COMPUTERS in your OneCare circle, or your entire home or small business workgroup. Montior the compliance of the other systems at the OneCare Hub (chosen during installation at one PC). Also, update and run any combination of other publically tools to REMOVE spyware. I like spysweeper, pest patrol, ad-aware free edition - AVG make one too.

Other then that, I would reset all my internet explorer settings to their default values and remove or disable ALL the IE addons like toolbars and stuff that may or may not be effecting your computer. Hope this helps. Good luck Jenny!

The above has to be done for testing purposes, not force anyone to use this, or that browser.
IMHO, Windows Live OneCare is worthless, or close to it.

Solve : Batch update help?

Answer»

My friend has a Dell running Windows Vista with Internet Explorer 7. Could get online (dial-up, yuck!) was able to view WEBPAGES but could not access any emails, but received IE cannot display this WEBPAGE. I ran Vista update and think this might have caused problems. Also tried to delete Norton Security program which came with ISP trial basis, but received error messages not being able to uninstall. Called ISP, WENT to Run>CMD prompt, etc. and after trying a command, was told that the batch file needed to be updated which would solve all her internet problems, etc. and should call computer manufacturer to get commands to enter but know I could do myself with help. Can anyone help me with this batch file update commands, etc.?88% chance Norton is wonking your connection because it was not removed properly...
DLoad and run the Norton Removal Tool from their site...
Re-boot and Post back with the results.
For other alternative protection programs ask here for some excellent ( Free ) suggestions.thank you! FOUND the download removal tool and I know it will work! Will let you know if it doesn't but am confident it will. Also, you mentioned alternative protection programs and I would appreciate any suggestions you may have for my friend and myself. Thanks again!!!- Avira free ANTIVIRUS: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html
- Avast! free antivirus: http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/

- Comodo free firewall: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/Also to add to the arsenal:

AdAware
Spybot Search and Destroy
WinPatrol
Stinger

All FREE and you will wind up with a well rounded protection package.

NOTE: Only install and run one antivirus program out of Broni's suggestions.

The rest of these can be added safely.Don't forget Microsoft's Windows Live One Care. Get the full strength of Microsoft behind your spyware scanner and anti-malware solution. They even allow you to manage all the PC's in your small home workgroup for one low fee. Most users should use this.

Solve : Internet Exployer Graphic symbols above the address bar?

Answer»

I believe that perhaps I wanted to increase some speed and there were so many fonts that I never ever use and just will not use so I READ SOMEWHERE to delete what you do not need and that will speed up the computer and it did.

Do you think that is why I have this anomoly above the address bar? I thought I was somehow using another country like asia for there internet exployer but it does work and it is in english.

I have a picture in additional options

thefonz

[recovering disk space -- attachment deleted by admin]Is this only on your browser or does the title bar of other applications also have weird characters now?Every single page that I went to where internet exployer would be showed the funny characters.

But here's what happened. I restarted the computer and it fixed itself so I am going to leave it at that and just observe.

Just curious, how many fonts do you now have? I have 286 in my Win XP comp. That's seems like a very high number. I may use patio's link to do some TRIMMING.

Edit: Well, after reading this, How Many Windows Fonts is Too Many and What Can I Do About It?, maybe 286 isn't so many.Well, everything is back to normal now and I have perhaps 6-10 fonts of my favorite and that is enough. I used no special program to delete the many that I did but it ok now. Lets face it you don't need 300 fonts.

thefonzArgh, just use firefox, it is much more um,,,, shall I say "user0friendly"? It's just better, take my word for it. Yea!! I like firefox also. Hey!! Go to my other topic about IE7 and firefox problem with YouTube.

Lets face it you don't need 300 fonts.

Who said you did? Anyway, if you stripped your system down to only 6-10 fonts, you went way OVERBOARD with this.

Firstly, I would reccomend you DOWNGRADE to FIREFOX 2.**. The latest one before 3. Because many people including myself, have many problems with the new one. Second, follow these instructions to update your Java:

Update Your Java (JRE)

Old versions of Java have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

First Verify your Java Version

If there are any other version(s) installed then update now.
Get the new version (if needed)

If your version is out of date install the newest version of the Sun Java Runtime Environment

Be SURE to close ALL OPEN web browsers before starting the installation.

I have Firefox 3 installed and have no problem watching youtube.com videos. But, since you've downgraded to Firefox 2, perhaps you want to stick with it for awhile. However, it SEEMS troubleshooting to determine why Firefox 3 was not working right was never really commenced here, no troubleshooting for Flash or for Java.

thefonz , at some point, you'll probably want to try Firefox 3 again. I suggest you verify you have the latest java and Flash Player installed before you try the upgrade. If you have questions when you get around to that, come back to the forum.

Solve : IE Problems?

So, Firefox isn't working either, then? I know you said you scanned for VIRUSES, but could you go ahead and post a HijackThis log?

Also...Download ComboFix and save it to your desktop. Run the program and read its disclaimer (it's fairly short) and make sure you really pay attention to what it says. Follow the prompts and when finished, it will produce a log at C:\ComboFix.txt. Go ahead and post that here. Note: Don't click on the window while it's running; this may cause stalls.Heres the Hijack log

You need to update your Java and I don't see any anti-virus or FIREWALL, but other than that, nothing really catches my eye. But let's try this just for the heck of it...

Download CWShredder here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder

  • Open CWShredder and click I Agree
  • Click Check For Updates
  • Close CWShredder
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it STARTS booting up again, continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be GIVEN the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix, and then Next. Let it fix everything it asks about. Reboot your computer back into Normal Mode.

Let me know how this goes.Yeah thats why I wanted some security, I'll have to do it latter but thanks. Have to get ready for my classes.I just reformatted my pc, forgot about the stuff I left in my favorites but I got everything mostly installed an have a working antivirus till next year. Going to do the other updates via usb

Solve : Need a bit of advice customizing my blog for search results?

Answer» HELLO everyone. I manage a blog. Let's say it's called www.thisisanexample.com. I type "this is an example" in the search bar and I get a hit for that one blog. Title reads "This is an Example" in bright blue, of course. And then there's the TEXT below the title. It's always the beginning text of my latest post. I don't want it to show that, I want it to show a custom subtitle/description. How do I do that? Anybody KNOW?What about working with a color transparancy, where the info you want to be shown on the hit is on the page but MASKED by the text being the same color as the background. The info that is part of the blog is text color different then the background and so its displayed. The text say black on black background wont show on your page to the eye, but is visible in the search.

Knowing how many characters are displayed of the blog you then know how many characters are required to hide the blog info and just show the custom description subtitle that you want.

Just an idea of a low tech way to do this maybe.

Solve : YouTube causing Google Chrome to hang frequently?

Answer»

YouTube has been causing Google Chrome to hang repeatedly on my HP desktop computer. The worst I've had this happen is 10 times in one day! MANY things cause it to happen including switching from an active tab (like Facebook loading between pages) while a video is playing to typing in something to search too early(like after the home page flashes up). The few times this has happened with a video playing the sound from the video continues to play just fine even after I get the "Not Responding" error from my computer. A few times this has happened it caused my Norton Confidential plug-in to crash and become non-responsive as well. Most of my browsing time is spent with YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter open at the same time in multiple tabs.Have you tried with firefox or any other browser? Is it only youtube or while using the computer you feel its freezing a lot?You better clear the Cache and Cookie and etc of your google chrome, (not necessary to clear history)
To make your browser feel Fresh! And BREATHE!
This might not be a good statement but it will work mostoffen.

On the otherside, check if there is a new version of your
Google chrome, if yes, update it. (By updating you're X, sometimes it get worse. For example i remember i updated my Firefox,
And then after hours, I faced to about 10 Crashes).
But you try the last version of your google chrome it might get better if the 1st solution didn't work.None of that seemed to help. I did discover, however that it is not YouTube crashing Chrome, but Facebook. I've had Facebook hang Chrome even when YouTube is not one of the sites I currently have running.Quote from: funguy11 on December 29, 2013, 04:09:46 PM

I knew It's not because of YouTube. It's all browser fault. Browsers have to be responsible.

Or waoo! What about Internet Explorer?! It is the king of Nothings!I've now discovered quite a few sites that present this problem. Mostly when trying to load a large amount of information.Quote from: funguy11 on December 29, 2013, 04:09:46 PM
None of that seemed to help. I did discover, however that it is not YouTube crashing Chrome, but Facebook. I've had Facebook hang Chrome even when YouTube is not one of the sites I currently have running.

What does "none of that seemed to help" mean? Did you try different browsers? If so, which ones and what happened? The most common time I've seen it happen is when I go from my Facebook News Feed to a group page. If that helps...Did you consider that it may be on their servers end ? ?
To test this have a Tab to an unrelated page open...when it happens clik that tab and see if all is good...
If so...it's on their end.Quote from: patio on January 05, 2014, 12:49:22 PM

I usually have YouTube and Twitter open at the same time as Facebook. When Facebook hangs the three tabs at the top of the screen are replaced with a single bar and "(not responding)" APPEARS and my mouse turns into the spinning blue ring.what type of operating system do you use?
You didn't mention the version of your chrome.
Have you ever used Firefox browser? Are you intentionally ignoring the question about trying other browsers? If you're not going to do as we ask we won't be able to assist you.I have WINDOWS 7 and Internet Explorer 11 gives me absolutely no problems. I would switch back to it but I am using Chrome for AdBlock Plus while using YouTube. One word...FireFox.No other choice so...I switched over to Firefox!

Solve : typing slow to respond?

Answer»

Samsung PC
Windows 8.1
after my PC is on for awhile the typing in Chrome SEARCH bar becomes slow to respond. If I run webroot and CCLEANER then reboot everything is normal until I get a little more browsing done then the slow response STARTS again.Check your browser plugins / extensions, one of them might be CAUSING problems. Otherwise, try with Firefox / internet explorer 'just' to check if you are experiencing same problems.

Solve : Nuisance while surfing the net?

Answer»

Hi there,
I have a huge nuisance with my laptop (Vaio): after roughtly 5 hours it's on I can't use any browser.
I can use skype, a p2p program but either chrome, EXPLORER nor mozilla do work.
I tried browsing the internet for some help but I couldn't find anything!
If this can help, I've a win7, AVAST (I had AVG earlier), no virus, normal motherboard, audio etc, I'd say I have an average computer.
Thanks in advance!Get CCleaner at http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download and run its Cleaner tool. The standard free version of CCleaner has some toolbar bundled with it. You can unselect installation of the toolbar at the beginning of the installation process. Or, you can do as I do and get the Slim version at http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds; it does not include the toolbar.

When you first open CCleaner, the first feature/button in the LEFT column of the panel is Cleaner. That is what you want to run. You can specify what Cleaner looks for in the right panel (either the Windows tab or the Appliacations tab) but the default settings are usually fine for many users. You either click the Run Cleaner button at the bottom right of the CCleaner window or you can click Analyze and then, once that process is finished, click Run Cleaner. The latter approach just allows you to see what CCleaner is GOING to remove, as opposed to CCleaner removing what it finds without you seeing the details (i.e. if you skip the Analyze step).

Once you have run CCleaner, see whether you can use your web browsers. If CCleaner helps, then keep it and run it as needed. On days when you do a lot of web surfing, you may want to run it at least once during the day. CCleaner updates often; it will alert you when updates are available. Hi Soybeam,
i did it yesterday night and it didn't work out, any IDEAS?

Solve : Best Browser for Androids. Which??

Answer»

It CERTAINLY is very impressive that you can pick up a capable ANDROID smartphone for £50 these days. Even the Lumia 520, if you fancy a WINDOWS phone, can sometimes be bought for not much more, and that's a very nice phone IMO. Not sure on how IE on WP compares to most phone browsers as I haven't used it for long enough to say, but I'm interested - I think my NEXT phone may well be a Windows phone.I have been trying Opera on my phone using a wi-fi connection to my router and it is commendably brisk. I suspect 3G on a bus is not the most favourable situation for a speed TEST.

Solve : MAKING HOMEPAGE?

Answer»

Hiya GENTS' Listen, is there a way to make your home page. I want to keep 'Yahoo' , but unscrupulous agents keep forcing there own pages on me. There used to be a 'make me your homepage' request on both GOOGLE and YAHOO, but I can't find it there?? Visit the page you wanna make it as your homepage and from the options/settings of your browser CLICK set as homepage. For FIREFOX, from drop down menu of 'When firefox starts' select SHOW my homepage and click 'Use current pages'. If third party applications keep on CHANGING your homepage, you can remove/uninstall them from the control panel. You may want to update and run all your protection Tools as well...Thanks fellas'

Solve : Is IE a security problem??

Answer»

Well, it looks like MS will extend support of MSE into 2015. A quick google search shows most experts are unimpressed and confused by this strategy. I READ several very critical comments about MSE calling it virtually useless. This bothers me because I use MSE. Also read several very critical comments re IE saying it is inferior to other browsers especially as it relates to security. So, I have converted to Chrome and made it my default browser on my winXP PC.

Do you folks agree that Chrome is superior to IE, at least in terms of security? I am trying to do everything I can to improve security as MS will stop patching XP in April. Realistically you need to start thinking about moving on from XP.
IE is still used by programs and the OS, so not using it doesn't negate any security holes which are discovered, and after April these won't be patched.Quote from: artbuc on January 17, 2014, 03:16:14 AM

Also read several very critical comments re IE saying it is inferior to other browsers especially as it relates to security.

This is usually the go-to of IE detractors, but it's difficult to substantiate- first you need to define what security is, what it means to be secure, and how to compare how different products differ in those qualities.

As I write this, it seems that all the current major browsers have unpatched security issues, which can allow for security bypass and system access. So despite what Chrome, Firefox, and even Opera users might TELL you, switching is more a case of exchanging ONE set of holes for another set of holes, rather than a case of switching from a old sieve to a riot shield.

Quote
I am trying to do everything I can to improve security as MS will stop patching XP in April.
What the cut-off means is that Microsoft will stop patching, as you said.

The cycle is usually- Malware authors exploit security issue->Microsoft learns about it->Patch is issued.

Since these security patches are applied to XP, it means that the security problems would be with the underlying system. Some problems, for example, are exploitable in any program whatsoever, so changing your browser would do nothing. Others apply to specific subsystems, or would apply only if a program is able to execute.

Even so, regardless of OS, the main way people get infected is not through some devious genius hacker managing to remotely exploit a vulnerability to get a worm on your system, but simply trojan downloaders that get installed when you throw caution to the wind because you absolutely must run a program from a questionable source. Most "Exploits" are in the browsers themselves and the ability to say have a browser download a file and execute it without further prompts. on XP these vulnerabilities are rather copious on any Browser because that new malware program now has full control and can install services and other fun stuff. If running on Vista/7/8 with UAC enabled, however, the new malware program that get's launched through the exploit will have limited privileges, so at the very worst you will get a unexpected UAC prompt for an unknown application requesting administrator access.

Ideally with XP you would set up a Limited User Account, the downside is that doing so means you have to switch to your admin account to install or uninstall programs or perform certain tasks, which is a massive pain and is usually enough to make people stop using a Limited User Account.Thank-you all, especially BC, for your thoughtful answers. Seems like the vast majority of experts here agree that I need to leave XP behind. There may be some debate about how soon XP will get into trouble but it will happen.

Have they? I thought it was just support for MSE on XP that was being extended.Wouldn't make sense for them to release it just for users of MSE...but rarely does anything they do make sense.Quote from: patio on January 17, 2014, 03:58:28 PM

Solve : slow internet speed...?

Answer»

Quote

Hello

I have done a free test on that speed test site and got these results

Communications 34.1 kilobits per second
Storage 4.2 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 4.1 minutes
Subjective rating Slow

Should the ISP provide a quicker connection, i mean is it their fault or my computer?

If you have a dial up connection ...then THATS not bad .....however if you have a Cable or DSL connection ....somethings wrong.

dl65 Quote
I contacted my isp and they say I am downloading at good speed and there is nothing wrong with my connection that it must be a hardware problem... I have NEVER heard of a hardware problem causing the failure to load pages (except where the hdd needs a clean up)...
So now Im at a loss as to what I can do... :-/

Well ....I don't know what to tell you other than we both have DSL connections ...LOOK at the differance between our D/L tests.......You say you have defragged your hard drive , emptied your temp files , DUMPED your history files .......Do you have lots of space available on your hard drive ? You could try shutting down your firewall just to check , but I don't think its effecting your d/L speed .......Do you have any other scanners which may be running and slowing down your D/l ?

What download speed did your ISP tell you they are delivering ? You also have to remember that your ISP help or tech support may not be staffed by people who really know anything .........They have a book ......and they ask you some questions and then based on your REPLY open the book and recite whatevers there .......and they will usually try and suggest the problem is yours not theirs .

hey, whenever u delete temp and cookies restart the

Solve : Opening up second window doesn't work?

Answer»

My FRIEND was on my COMPUTER last night, Doing god knows what, And when I used it the day after, It has been giving me this problem. :\

Everytime I click on a link or such that opens up a new window, The page will always say "Cannot find server."

This happens even if I manually try to go into something through a new window by "Open with."

BASICALLY I have to copy down the link (If that's possible, Some windows such as chats don't have an address bar to copy from) And open up a fresh window myself, Paste it down, And access it this way.

Now while this isn't too much of an annoyance, I can't do this with every page I access that opens a SECOND page, Because I can't copy the address.

What do I need to fix to allow second windows to work?

I'd be very grateful for help...Can you tell me wat version of Windows you are using? We are going to do a system restore, but I need to know what set of instructions to give you.....

[glb]Flame[/glb]Well um..This is just an old windows 98..Do you have a pop-up blocker?

[glb]Flame[/glb]No I don't..But recently (And this is after the incidents started), I'd got an Ad-aware program.

*This is because I was GETTING randum pop-ups as well since this started. (Though they obviously won't work either)hey,go to internet options and inthat under advance tab click restore defaults ,click ok

Solve : Google chrome...?

Answer»

Ive RECENTLY installed that new browser Chrome...but now i want to uninstall it.Problem is, the uninstall is unresponsive....and im reluctant to remove the files manually.

So how can i go about doing this *WITHOUT* hurting myself.

Or could i just remove it manually?Welcome aboard
It looks like I wasn't the only one with this problem.
That's how beta versions are, sometimes.
Download FRESH copy of Chrome's installer.
Exit all programs.
Reinstall over the top.
Try to uninstall again. This is why i swear by Total Uninstall...No luck...

Think i could try That total uninstall hes TALKING about? Go ahead. If that doesn't work, I'll help you to remove it manually.seemed to work... but i searched "google chrome" using the search feature in TU and it found 8 or so more reg keys that were not removed. Mostly in startup directoriesTU ?Total uninstaller, probablyOh HehehYou can use Regseeker: http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm to get rid of those leftovers.Oh god regseeker

I used to use that, the first time i ran it it found something like 2k+ "bad" entries..scared the crap out of me. Also

LAST time I ran it.

I killed my computer (I only unzipped the regseeker.exe and not everything else therefore making it unable to make backups ) but ccleaner found some things... I will try that first.Never use Regseeker for general cleaning. It's too aggresive. CCleaner will work FINE for that purpose.

I said:

Solve : Firefox 3 Vista?

Answer»

I just switched back to Vista cause I was bored and read that games perform almost the same as XP now, SP1 came out, and there are now drivers for my WiFi dongle. Everything's RUNNING great so far, and stuff is shiny

My only complaint is the default theme for FF3 is really ugly, the background of the toolbars is a light purpleish blue color. I don't want to switch to a different theme, I've looked through a lot of them and none of them look good, those that do are messed up, there's a white square around the buttons or something...I just want to get the same color as XP had back. Anyone know how?Maybe this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6898Eh, close enough. Never thought to try that. Thanks BTW
Quote

FF themes don't DEPEND on OS.I dunno, they look different for me

[recovering DISK space -- attachment deleted by admin]Must be Aero...How about this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4583With Vista, the top of every window you have open will be the colour you pick in the CP.I think you're right, because uTorrent has the same color toolbar, but I can't seem to find where to CHANGE it. I went to control panel>personalization>window color and appearance. Changing this had an effect on the title bar but not the toolbars, so I went to "open classic appearance properties for more color options" and played around with that but it had no effect as well.Toolbars?

Firefox toolbars? You need to download a theme from the Firefox website.

I'll take a look...1. Your HJT log doesn't show any firewall running. Do you have Windows firewall on?
2. You must always run HijackThis from its own folder. Create HijackThis folder in C:\Program Files, and put HijackThis.exe into that folder for future use.

Now...

1. Print out these instructions as we will need to close every window that is open later in the fix.

2. Download SmitfraudFix.exe from here and save it to your desktop:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/smitfraudfix.php

3. Next, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following:

a. Restart your computer

b. Start tapping F8 key

c. A menu will APPEAR

d. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

4. Close all open Windows.

5. Now, double-click on the SmitFraudfix icon.

6. When the tool first starts you will SEE a credits screen. Simply press any key on your keyboard to get to the next screen.

7. You will now see a menu. Press the number 2 on your keyboard and the press the Enter key to choose the option Clean.

8. The program will start cleaning your computer and go through a series of cleanup processes. When it is done, it will automatically start the Disk Cleanup program.
This program will remove all Temp, Temporary Internet Files, and other files that may be leftover files from this infection. This process can take up a long time depending on your computer, so please be patient. When it is complete, it will close automatically and you should continue with next step.

9. When Disk Cleanup is finished, you will be presented with an option asking Do you want to clean the registry ? (y/n). At this screen you should press the Y button on your keyboard and then press the Enter key.

10. When this last routine is finished, you will be presented with a red screen stating Computer will reboot now. Close all applications. You should now press the spacebar on your computer. A counter will appear stating that the computer will reboot in 15 seconds. Do not cancel this countdown and allow your computer to reboot.

11. Once the computer has rebooted, you will be presented with a Notepad screen containing a log of all the files removed from your computer.
Save that log to your desktop, and attach it to your next reply. SmitFraudFix v2.253

Now, it's gonna be time for your fresh HJT log to be posted back here, but I won't proceed with reading it until you comply with my requests:

Quote

1. Your HJT log doesn't show any firewall running. Do you have Windows firewall on?
2. You must always run HijackThis from its own folder. Create HijackThis folder in C:\Program Files, and put HijackThis.exe into that folder for future use.
sorry, now i`m post a right thing now?

I can see, you have ZoneAlarm firewall up, now, but also I can see your Bitdefender antivirus services running, but with indication of some files missing. What's your story with Bitdefender?

Now...

1. Print this post out, since you won't have an access to it, at some point.

2. Download, and install Spybot (if you don't have it) from here: http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10122137.html

3. Close all windows, except for HJT.

4. Put a checkmark next to the following HJT entries:

- O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

- If UkrTeleGroup Ltd is NOT your ISP, put a checkmark next to ALL O17 entries (8 lines)

5. Click on "Fix It" button.

6. Restart your computer in Safe Mode (keep tapping F8 key, when your computer starts)

7. Run Spybot (check for updates, first), and fix whatever it asks you to fix.

8. Open Windows Explorer. Go Tools>Folder Options>View tab, put a checkmark next to "Show hidden files, and folders".

9. Delete following files (if they still exist):

- FlashGet folder from C:\Program Files

10. Turn off System Restore:

- Windows XP:
1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check "Turn off System Restore".
5. Click Apply.
6. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
7. Click OK.
- Windows Vista:
1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click on System Protection under the Tasks column on the left side
4. Click on Continue on the "User Account Control" window that pops up
5. Under the System Protection tab, find Available Disks
6. Uncheck the box for any drive you wish to disable system restore on (in most cases, drive "C:")
7. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click "Turn System Restore Off" on the popup window to do this.
8. Click OK

11. Restart in Normal Mode.

12. Turn System Restore on.

13. Run HJT again, and post back its log back here.

Because its full of *censored*.

Try Mozilla Firefox

And use the following tools while you're at it:

Virus scanners
AVG Free
-- Anti virus scanner

Anti spy/malware
Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware scanner. Windows XP Home and Professional only.
Spybot Search & Destroy
-- Anti spyware scanner
Adaware SE Personal
-- Anti spyware scanner

Firewalls
Using only ONE firewall is advised. Dual firewalls may cause problems.
Using a hardware firewall and a software firewall is even more adviced.

ZoneAlarm Free
-- Free firewall - more user friendly
Sygate Personal
-- Free firewall - more configuration options

Removal tools
The following files are not substitutes for the ones described above.
They are either DIAGNOSTIC tools or removal tools for malware of a certain kind

HijackThis
-- Manual malware REMOVER. Post the HijackThis log generated only if requested!
McAfee Stinger
-- Virus removal tool. No substitute for a fully functional virus scanner!
CWshredder
-- CoolWebSearch removal tool. Widely known and persistant Hijacker. What net conection have you got?adsl/sat/wlan/cable/dun~

and its ok to have two firewalls....

Solve : Setting Font Size and Face for Header/Footer?

Answer»

Hi

I would like to set the font size and the font face for the header and footer when printing from IE.

Is it POSSIBLE? - I can't seem to find how to do it. Is it possible for other browsers.

Ideally of course I would like to set this from css.

If anyone can shed any light on this I would love to hear from you.
Many thanks.

Tools/internet options.......font......

The difficulties with it are that there is no setting for font size and the settings for font face AFFECT the entire document at least in some cases.

Working with css seems to affect the document but not the IE settings. Perhaps I am just asking too much from the technology.

As an afterthought - perhaps that is partly what pdf was DEVISED to do.

Any other thoughts?
Many thanks for your post.

Thanks again Merlin_2. Definitely more progress.

I suppose what I really want is to adjust the font face and size of the header and footer text for anyone printing my web pages from any machine.

A little EXPLANATION. I have a web site on a company LAN. I keep all my departmental DOCUMENTS on it and would like the footer "page i of n" and "date" printing in a font to match the body text. Then any printout from any machine is consistent typographically throughout.

Any ideas.
Many thanks for the help so far.

Solve : Switch Comps /internet?

Answer»

im new to this forum, so here i go.....

i have a SONY vaio connected to my roadrunner cable modem by ethernet cord... and i want to have my laptop (IBM Thinkpad type: 2628-G1U) to be connected to the road RUNNER..... so i unplug my ethernet cord from my sony and connect it to my laptop but on my cable modem it says not connected to PC...... i dont know what to do, or if i need an adapter or sumthin...

plz help THANKS......You should use a Router

You will have to configure the laptop in the same manner as your Desktop (The TCP/IP protocol, computer name and perhaps other settings) if you choose to switch cables between laptop and desktop.are u sure this is going to work ?

a router would instantly mak eit workA router will allow you to simulteanously connect both computers to the Internet and be secured at the same time.

You could ALSO use a Hub or a Cross-over cable

However, a Router is the most safe and efficient choice.

And yes, I am certain that if you configure the Laptop as the Desktop is configured, that you will be able to use the Internet when connected to the cable modem.

You should contact your provider for installation details such as the computer name and perheps other settings if you do not know these.

Solve : Google not working?

Answer»

In the original post all I see is he has the problem with only ONE domain name. Not with other domain names.

When a site is not found, the DNS you are using will decide what they want to do. I get this all the time. But nit is not appear to be malware. With refresh, the site comes up. Would malware allow that?

If he changes to another DNS SERVICE, the results may be different. If he uses a proxy server, he will get results from another geographic area.

Why do you think it is a virus or some kind of malware?

In the original post all I see is he has the problem with only one domain name. Not with other domain names.

When they try to access ANY WEBSITE through google search they get redirected to another location. Only malware/spyware does this. Whether the domain they are redirected to is still active or not is irrelevant.Quote
Hope I'm in the right forum! Here goes...whenever I try to access any website through google search I get an empty page with the following address; eatiohonrggn.com. This has been occuring for just over a month. Can anyone help? Web searches do not recognise the name.

That is what he said. He is talking about one website.

Are you dense? Did you even read that post? Are you perhaps suffering from some sort of severe mental handicap that has reduced you to a blabbering fool with the cognitive capabilities of a sack of potatoes, or are you being intentionally obtuse? He cannot access website from a google search. It says it right there, in the passage you quoted, and which I quoted and used larger text to emphasize in the post immediate before yours. It doesn't say he cannot access a single website, it says they cannot access "ANY" website through google search, because they all redirect them to a defunct URL. You seem to be under the impression that the problem is that that URL isn't loading. It's not. The problem is that they are being redirected at all. Whether that URL they are being directed to is no longer being paid for has nothing to do with their problem.

Perhaps I ought to describe how google search works? It's really quite useful, see you ENTER these things called queries and then it lists a bunch of results.

How are those results shown to you? as Links of course. Each link naturally being a single result. Now you'll notice something about the links: they don't all link to the same site. For example search google for "Coca Cola" or "Linux" and you'll find the results from a wide variety of locations.

naturally, one would expect that clicking on these links sends you to the site described by the result, but in cases such as the OP's, they are being redirected to another site. for every link. This is not a DNS problem. Again, where this site is doesn't matter. What is important is they are being redirected.

Let me reiterate, for the 5th or 6th time; the actual URL they are being redirected to is of no relevance at all. The problem is CLIENT-SIDE with machine.

How do I know this? easy. Well, what I did was I went to google search myself, and searched for something. Now, when I click on a link in the results(remember before, I noted that results are shown as a list, with links to each result), it doesn't direct me to the defunct URL that the OP described. I assume that it didn't for you, if you were able to restrain your excitement over using a online whois tool for a few extra moments. Therefore, the problem is with their machine And the only time I've ever seen or heard of google searches being redirected is in the case of malware. I'm not sure what you think it is but the least relevant posts in this thread are all yours and jabber on about DNS, and how the url they are redirected to doesn't exist, as if that somehow makes their problem disappear, or is even relevant to the actual issue, which is that they are being redirected to another location when they click on a search result link.Quote

That is what I was going to say to you.

In the post he uses the word 'any' incorrectly.
Not grammatically, but dramatically. It does not fit the context. He is only speaking about his search for one website, not any website. Read the context. He MENTIONS a Google search, which simplicity excludes a reference to any site. Google is a website. If he had redirects with other sites he would have said so. He could have said 'some' sites. But he only names one domain name. No mention of any others. Except Google.

Nor has he come back to explain.

He may have meant 'my website' instead of 'any website.'

Solve : Resend message on Firefox and IE?

Answer»

When I click on "go back a page" on a library catalogue site I often get a MESSAGE - "To display this page Firefox must send info. that will repeat any action that was performed earlier", with two boxes "resend" and "cancel". Clicking resend allows you to carry on and go back, and if you are searching and need to go back and forth it becomes very irritating. The same message occurs when using IE, and it's only on this site , in my experience. Is this some check imposed by the owners of the site or by the browser? Can I stop it somehow? I don't really understand the meaning of the message.
Clarification appreciated. It's the browser. The page your are viewing needed information submitted to it in order to display correctly (such as a search or some kind of form, etc.). It's just warning you that you are probably submitting information that you've already submitted. Depending on the information, this can SOMETIMES CAUSE errors or problems (like if you're posting information, this will post it twice).

If there's a "back" link on the page itself, using this instead of the browser's back button will usually stop that message or the need to resubmit information.

Without knowing the site, that's about all the clarification you can get. I don't know what information it is actually trying to resubmit. Thanks for reply quaxo -
The site is the local library service and this occurs when looking in their catalogue for books, authors, etc. - there is no "hard" information sent or order given. That is what puzzles me. It's not quite knowing what the message means that irritates! I'll just carry on clicking resend. If you don't mind sharing that library website, perhaps some of use could visit the site and see whether we get the same behavior. the message means the site is passing information from one page to the next by way of HTTP POST headers.

if you are searching, then the POST headers will have your search query, if you are paging through then they may contain the page to view.soybean - this is the link (Dorset LibraryService):

http://libcat.dorsetforyou.com/

What are POST headers?Further to previous - I've been trying the site again, more carefully, to try to pin down just when these messages appear and I have a further clue. They seem to come up as I said before but only when I'm signed in with my library number. I now THINK that maybe that is the info that is being repeated? The messages don't seem to appear if you search the site as an outsider, as it were. Sorry to have wasted anyone's time if this is the case. Quote from: silkie on May 23, 2011, 07:15:18 PM

They seem to come up as I said before but only when I'm signed in with my library number.

That's it. the pages are sending your library number or sessionID or something to that effect to each subsequent page.

If you're doing a search, there's a "Return to List" button at the bottom. If you click this instead of clicking your back button, you shouldn't get that message anymore. Thanks to all for advice and interest shown.

Solve : Scrolling in IE8?

Hello everyone , I have encountered a problem with scrolling down the pages , say I am scrolling down the page on ebay , in the middle of that page I choose an item , I click on it ,view it then I go back to search results and INSTEAD going to the middle of the page where I found my last viewed item the page goes right up to the top . I tried different sources of information but with no sucess , any help would be appreciated .
THANKSI use the Backspace key or the Left arrow in the address bar to return to last view. How are you "going back" Quote from: TulsaRose on May 16, 2011, 06:24:09 AM

I use the Backspace key ...
How does that WORK?

My most frequent method of going back is to right click and select Back from the right-click menu.Alt + <- works as well...

Alt Back arrow that is...If I use back arrow the page does go back to previous one only to the top of that page , it does not go back to the place where I stopped scrolling , so if I stopped scrolling half way through one page , I picked an item viewed it then went back to previous page I would be at the top of that page instead of half way down , it is so annoying .ALT + back arrow...
Up arrow goes to the top of the page...I've got a five button mouse and one of the buttons is programmed for back. Works great! On MSNBC when I'm in the middle of the page and I hit the back button and it will go to the top of the page for a second, then go back to where I was within a second or two.

Have you tried a different browser?Quote

This is whatever the Message Box font is that you chose in your display settings, as far as I can see. It is used for quite a lot of things if Firefox, as you (hopefully) can see...

It's not the font, it's the way it's rendered.

yeah, thanks for that. I noted that they can be moved "but those can be moved, no problem there"; I was merely commenting that the entire idea of having the tabs occupy the title bar at all feels silly to me. (No doubt the same way my use of so at the beginning of my subject has been bothersome enough to some to not only point out but actually carry on a discussion about.)

Quote
I've been using Firefox 4 without any problems whatsoever for about a month now. I'm on v4.01. Am I missing something?
It uses some DIFFERENT screen smoothing, for me, anyway. If I put a wordpad window set to the same font NEXT to this browser window, for example, and paste the same contents, I can read it a lot more clearly. Probably related to some sort of additional filtering the my video card is doing when FF is set to use acceleration. I'll probably have to fiddle about with it for a while sometime.

Install this theme if you don't like the look of FF4.x
I never said I didn't like the look of FF4. Well that's a lie, I did. But I also don't really like the ribbon UI, and I didn't like XP when I first installed it and started it off using the "classic" theme. I'm just skipping the same nonsense with FF where I use some theme or skin to make it "look" like the previous incarnation and then just end up using the new one at some later time anyway.

Firefox does NOT install any Ask toolbar. You got it from somewhere ELSE.
Actually, I've come to think that maybe something installed it with FF 3.6.17, and I disabled it from within FF (but didn't uninstall it). And FF4 for some reason re-enabled all the add-ons I had disabled for whatever reason, and the toolbar was one of them.

As for the "So" bit. There is no right and wrong, people who say it's "wrong" were simply taught that it was wrong; there is no grammatical rule saying you cannot, just as there is no grammatical rule saying you cannot end a sentence with a proposition; it's a stylistic choice or guideline that has been "passed down" and is commonly believed by some to be "the rule". Of course, if you are writing formally you aren't going to get away with not following these stylistic guidelines, since many professors have agreed that reading papers with sentences that begin with "So..." says the student was not taught "proper" English, but that is only their opinion, because there is no real definition for what is and isn't "proper" english, it's all subjective. The only reason rules like that come into being is because somebody thinks it "doesn't sound right" and is in a position to enforce that as a rule- a professor, for example.

English is not a static language, by any means. Over time people basically made up "rules" for what you couldn't- or rather "shouldn't" do: never split an infinitive, active verbs are always better than passive verbs, and to always use "more than" INSTEAD of "over" with numbers. To draw an analogy, this is exactly the same type of thing that has occurred in programming languages "Never use goto" for example. This isn't to say such rules are bad, but rather that they aren't rules at all and are merely guidelines. As for education systems; each professor is no doubt going to "enforce" a different set of guidelines, In the same way that different CS teachers will enforce the various "rules" about writing programs. None of them are actual rules of the languages in question, and not following them doesn't necessarily prevent them from doing their job; a computer doesn't care if you use goto or not, just as most people will understand what you are saying if you use a active verb instead of a passive verb or split an infinitive. The only difference is a computer doesn't roll it's EYES when you use a goto.

I don't think starting things like topic titles with "So" is "wrong", just annoying.

Do you think, I said anything remotely similar to that? All I said was "the entire idea of having the tabs occupy the title bar at all feels silly to me"

I bolded the important bit. Of course it also breaks about a dozen standard UI rules, but so do a lot of applications these days, and a lot of applications always have, so that's not really that new.

No. I mean something installed it when I had 3.6.17. that is, SOMETHING ELSE. installed it. You know, a program being installed and I forgot to uncheck it when I installed it. I disabled it at the time but it refused to uninstall and I didn't have time to spend badgering around with it so I left it disabled.

Quote

No, I have it "back" because FF4 automatically re-enabled every single plugin and extension that I had disabled before. Best guess might be that it has to do that to check compatibility or something along those lines; For example, the skype plugin was enabled again as well as a number of others. It stands to reason that the toolbar got re-enabled as well.

Solve : IE9 starts but asks to be shutdown right away.?

Answer»

I had a windows update and was asked if I wanted to install IE9. I said yes and then clicked restart computer. The computer was stuck on the shut down screen so I hit the reset button on the computer tower. Then, I click on IE9 and the window appears and I can see the new top of the window design but I get a constant dialoge box that reads IE9 has encountered a problem and has to close. IE9 doesn't close but the box appears repeatedly after I click "close" or the corner "x". I had to do system restore to get back to IE8 so I could post the problem. This was one of two dialoge boxes that would appear, I can't remember the other one but produced the same results. I have Vista. Here is something i found that may be a factor in your issue.
"Disable Receive Window Auto-Tuning

If none of those fixes the problem, and you are just having a really slow browsing experience only on your Vista computer, the problem could very well be due to the network auto-tuning FEATURE in Windows Vista which is incompatible with some routers.

Open up an administrator mode command prompt (right click on command prompt and choose Run as Administrator), and then type in the following command.

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

You’ll have to reboot the computer after making this change. Note that the same change also can help fix problems with copying large files."
truenorth
P.S. Before doing this i would await further member input or comment.I highly doubt a Windows feature is causing the issue, seeing as the program is crashing after a hard reset during updates. My first step would be to try reinstalling Internet Explorer from Microsoft's website instead of the updater:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/downloads/ie-9/worldwide-languages

Then run updates after installing it from this executable, and hopefully the problem won't reappear. Also, try not to shut down windows while it's updating in the future, that tends to cause tons of problems.I tried downloading directly from the link BaRR provided and got the same result. I get to see the new top of the window design of IE9 but I get dialoge boxes immediately before I can get to the home page. The first one I get is "Internet Explorer has stopped working." ...and at the bottom of the screen there is a box with a yellow bar on top that reads "A problem with this website caused IE to close and reopen the tab." Then I get a box "checking for a solution" and then the process just loops indefinately. I do notice that on my DESKTOP I have the shortcuts for IE9 but there is also an icon that looks just like IE9 but has the Vista shield in front of it and is called IE9-windowsVisita-x86-enu. I also tried running without add ons because I've read that suggested before but with the same results. I have to system restore every time this happens. For now, I'm downloading a second BROWSER so at least I can get to the internet when IE gives me problems.Hopefully you shall be able to eventually get IE to perform properly. In the meantime you might wish to install IE8 if IE is important to you. Many here on the forums will recommend Firefox as an alternative. I personally prefer and use Opera (the latest version--11 i believe).good luck, truenorthI agree with truenorth. Given the problems you've encountered with IE9, if you can get back to a properly working IE8, I'd just leave IE alone and install another browser and make that non-IE browser the DEFAULT browser. I have both Firefox and Opera installed on my Windows 7 system and sometimes switch the default from one to the other; now, it's Opera. If you've never used a browser other than IE, Firefox is probably a little easier transition from IE than Opera due to greater similarity between IE and Firefox than between IE and Opera. I guess I'll just keep using IE8. I downloaded FireFox too just in case I want to try intalling IE9 again.MS sent me an answer to my problem and I'm now using IE9. They said to go to advanced menu and click or unclick Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering.

Prior, I got another windows update and it asked if I wanted to install IE9 and I clicked yes again and had the same problem. Then, while I was stuck in the endless loop of opening and closing IE a Help or Solutions window appeared and told me to try this. You all probably know this by now but just thought I would post just in case.has the answer sent by MS helped your problem with IE9? And you probably might want to Reset Internet Explorer. Maybe doing that would help....

Microsoft Support info I linked to probably has info for older IE version, but it works same way with ie9.Yea. MS gave me the fix and now I'm using IE9 with the favorites on the right hand side of the screen.

Solve : Problem with Firefox 4?

Answer»

I just downloaded Firefox 4 and couldn't get online. A small white window came up that said: Offline Mode - Firefox is currently in offline mode and can't browse the Web. Uncheck the "WORK Offline" menu item, then try again.

I looked all over and couldn't find a menu item that says "Work Offline". I am running Windows 7, Home Premium, 64 bit, and very happy that I had downloaded the newest IE browser so that I could send this SOS.

Does anyone know where the location is of the "Work Offline" menu item
Thank youWell, do they have an "embarrassed" smiley ICON? I could barely see the bar with File, View, History, etc. at the top of the web page as it was the same color as my desktop that shows through behind it. At this rate I don't THINK I'll EVER MAKE it out of the "BEGINNER" status.
Thanks for your prompt reply. Sincerely appreciated. This one

type it as colon+hyphen+open square bracket

or select it from the row of emoticons above the box where you type a reply

but I wouldn't worry...

Solve : What is http://img508.imageshack.us/newuploader_ad.php?ad_tag=Imageshack_Landing?

Answer»

Hi. I RIGHT-click a picture in imageshack to view the full size. I got the full size IMAGE. But doing so, a new tab also opened with this URL:
http://img508.imageshack.us/newuploader_ad.php?ad_tag=Imageshack_Landing_pops2

The page was blank though. Should I be concerned?? Has anyone seen this before? I did a url check with Dr. WEB and it says clean...That's only an ad. Are you sure you clicked the right thing?Yes, I'm sure. I tried it 2 times to see if it got the same results.

Here's the pic.

I click on the thumbnail to GO to the imageshack site. And there, I left-click the picture (not right-click).. and that's what led to the new tab opening.Thats just the image location at the site...not to worry...Patio, you're talking about the newuploader_ad url right? If so, then thank goodness

Solve : Error: Default mail client not properly installed?

Answer»

I have Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0. When I click on a person's e-mail ADDRESS on a web page, I get an error message box that READS: Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not properly installed. I have no idea what this means or what I need to do. Can anyone set me on the path to understanding? If so, I'll trade three (imaginary) gold stars for your knowledge. :>) Thank you!

When you click on an email address on a web page, most of them are instructing your computer to open your email client (Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, etc.) and place the address you clicked in the to box.

If you don't have any email client installed, for instance you only use yahoo mail, then you will get this message. Also if you have one installed but it is not referenced properly in IE then you will get this message.

To check what email client it is attempting to use, in Internet Explorer click the Tools menu, then Internet Options, then the Programs tab. The email program is the second one from the top.

Dang! I thought for sure that I finally had a fix. I followed your instructions, Gussery, to the letter. My email program option was empty, so I filled it with "Juno." My fingers danced their way to a web e-mail contact person to try. :>( The same message comes up. I noticed, though, that when I got into the Internet Options, the first tab had a non-Juno address for Internet Explorer, so I changed it to the Juno address through Internet Explorer. I thought smugly that I had figured out something on my own - with an assistance boost from you. But no. That doesn't work either.

If you have any other suggestions, I'd be happy to try them. In the meantime, I'll keep looking at the Internet Options tabs. I feel that I'm on the right track (perhaps I should be on the left track? :>) )

Thanks much for your HELP!

Clara[emailprotected]@k on the isp website...for pop.........or here>.
http://www.kayodeok.btinternet.co.uk/favorites/kboe.htm#oekbhowtoSorry, Merlin 2, but I don't even know what "pop" is. I gather that 'isp" means Internet Service Provider, which for me is Juno. After an hour of rambling around on my isp website, looking for something - ANYthing - that might make sense, I gave up. The alternate website is equally confusing for me, as I can't make sense out of the information I read - it might as well be written in Hebrew.

HOWEVER, I appreciate your taking the time to offer suggestions. Thank you!

ClaraTo send email this way you need an e-mail client installed on your computer ie Thunderbird, Outlook, Outlook Express, once you install one of those, you'll need a pop program ie Y! Pops, once you install that you'll be all set. They're all pretty easy to set up but thats how its done.clara......I just checked with the Juno website ( your service provider )......It looks to me as if you are using their own E mail software which may or may not be compatible with M/S outlook Express or outlook ......however if you contact Juno customer service, they should be able to tell you how to configure
your pc . Tell them you would like to use Outlook Express for your mail account and how do you set them up as the mail server in outlook express .

dl65 if anyone is still having this problem, install live messanger 2011 if running windows vista / 7 and set up a username and password and it will ask you if you want to make windows live mail your default mail client, click ok and your setIt was 6 years ago...

Solve : FireFox 4 problems with Citrix?

Answer»

I downloaded FF4 and I like it. I use CITRIX to access the network at my JOB. The citrix plug in doesn't work with FF4. I talked to our IT DEPARTMENT and they told me to switch to Internet Explorer (MS). The previous version of FF WORKED with Citrix. Is this something that I have to wait for Citrix to FIX?

Solve : Win 7 32bit, IE9, and Youtube?

Answer»

One problem that I just found with my system Win 7 32bit, IE9, and Youtube is that if I go to Youtube and click on a music video to play to listen to the music, and then minimize the window or switch to another web page by use of another browser window or tab to open a new window. The video stops after a few seconds as if the session is lost to youtube. I go back to the youtube page and I have a cartwheel at center of video window and the play bar shows that about 1/20th of the content streamed or loaded to the play window and STOPPED at say 35 seconds into it. If I keep youtube maximized (and) keep the ad active at the bottom of the video window, the music video plays without any problems. However if I have the screen maximized and kill the ad with the [X] in the upper right of the ad, the loading stops and the video will only play to that point.

I am thinking that either I have a problem with that site, or they dont want me to play the music video if I am not watching their website and its advertising. Anyone else experience this? Or any suggestions on what to check out on my system if its not youtube?Strange...
Ran a test on connection speed lately ? ?Hello Patio

Yes, ran speedtest on it to test upload/download and I have 20mbps download and 12mbps upload with Comcast broadband, measured against a near by location in Manchester, NH. Downloading content download fast and watching shows on hulu and crackle run with no problems.

Its too bad I cant share an avi of the symptoms to show you the nature of it. CamStudio is perfect for recording and showing this type of problem, but a quick avi video would be like 35mb or so in size.

Also to note that this issue is experienced all hours of day including like 4am EST when there should be little internet conjestion in the USA with most people sleeping from here in New Hampshire to California.Good enough...
That would make my next suspect the browser ...
Run it with all addons disabled.....if still the same try Firefox and see.

Hey good idea! I will give that a try tonight when I get home from work. ThxWell I tried Firefox and same exact problem as IE9. Attached screenshot of it. You can see the cartwheel at center of video as it stopped and is cartwheeling, but NEVER picks up where it LEFT off. If you move the radio button to move it FORWARD a second or so, it will play the next minute or so of the video or sometimes the whole rest of video.

Last night, I checked my bandwidth with http://www.speedtest.net/ and had 20mbps down and 4mbps up.

I also checked into if Comcast was shaping my bandwidth based on content type and it came up with no detection:
Quote

Is your upload traffic rate limited?

There is no INDICATION that your ISP rate limits your uploads.
Is your download traffic rate limited?

There is no indication that your ISP rate limits your downloads.
However, some of the measurements were affected by noise, which limits Glasnost ability to detect rate limiting.

Details:

* There is no indication that your ISP rate limits your FlashVideo downloads. In our tests, downloads using control flows achieved up to 14402 Kbps while downloads using FlashVideo achieved up to 13535 Kbps.

* There is no indication that your ISP rate limits downloads on port 52136 or 42916. In our tests, downloads on port 52136 achieved up to 14402 Kbps while downloads on port 42916 achieved up to 14173 Kbps.

I used : http://broadband.mpi-sws.org/transparency/bttest.php to test to see if Comcast was restricting the flow of content, specifically FLASH used by Youtube.

Any other ideas ?

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]This video did just what i mentioned... you move the radio button to advance it a few seconds past the location that it initially cartwheeled at, and then stopped playing again with a cartwheel again not picking up where it left off as seen in screenshot.

Solve : I do NOT want my FAVS in alphabetic order?

Answer»

I have always had my FAVS in order of PREFERENCE and LISTED as newest at the bottom (except if i drag my preferences to the top)
SOMEHOW today i have managed to have them all set alphabetically and i want to reverse it - How?
Since we don't know what browser this may take awhile...Quote from: francesca on July 24, 2011, 12:47:19 PM

I'm quite sure you'll have to manually rearrange them. The only way I know of to definitely restore them to the former sequence would be to regularly create a full image of your hard drive and restore the whole hard drive from it, which seems a bit extreme for this objective.

You might test backup and restore of Favorites by using the backup and restore, or export and import, commands in your browser. I don't know whether this procedure will retain the order; I SUSPECT it will not but I'd have to test it to be sure.

Ah, I just found this: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081027232733AAXGeZM. It CONFIRMS what I first said. Quote from: patio on July 24, 2011, 02:03:26 PM

I'm with Patio on this.
I don't think it MAKES a difference which browser, does it? Do any of them provide a way to undo a sort in alphabetical order? Not that I know of.

Also, "FAVS" indicates Favorites in IE since other browers, at least the ones I'm familiar with, all use the term Bookmarks. But, again, this seems irrelevant. In IE7, 8 and 9 you can go into "Organise Favorites" and drag each one up or down to where you want it.
In IE, if you load the favorites tool bar, and click on favorites on the tool bar it gives you the option of History, and will show the most recently viewed sites. This may be an option.Quote from: Salmon Trout on July 25, 2011, 01:15:53 PM

And, in Firefox, "Organize Bookmarks"; in Opera, "Manage Bookmarks".
