Solve : How to contact people that manage IE's SmartScreen Filter?

Answer»

I don't KNOW if this is the best PLACE to post this but there might be someone who knows something about this. I have an application that I recently RELEASED. It's a free download for everyone that comes with free trial minutes and then when the trial minutes are up people can purchase activation if they choose. When you download my software in IE 8 or IE 9 you see a SmartScreen Filter message that says. This "program is not commonly downloaded and could harm your computer."

I was trying to find a way to contact the people at Microsoft that MANAGE IE's SmartScreen Filter. If I could present my application for testing so that they could see it is safe to download then perhaps they could have SmartScreen Filter give the go ahead instead of showing a discouraging message that would tend to make people not want to download my software.

I'll keep searching to find something I can do to eliminate that message. If I get some helpful response here then great.

Edit entry: I just left an email for Microsoft Support so maybe I'll get some help there. Might be something helpful at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/SmartScreen-Filter-frequently-asked-questions-IE9. Be sure to read the FAQ titled "One of the sites I visit is being flagged by SmartScreen Filter, but it's not an unsafe website. What can I do?"

Solve : Please help me out...?

Answer»

I know close to nothing about computers, so please bear with me. I have been trying to download files for a game I play. When I open the FOLDER, Firefox asks me what it should do with the file, and under it is two options: SAVE, or open. There is a drop-down box that is automatically set to open with Internet Explorer. I click 'open', and an internet explorer window pops up, then disappears, and two smaller boxes appear afterward. One says "getting file information", and the other asks yet again if I want to open or save the file. If I click 'open' again, it simply repeats, over and over, until I either get tired of clicking 'open' and give up, or I click 'save', which does not solve the problem. I have tried using Adobe to open my files, but it can't read it. Firefox does the same thing as Internet Explorer. These are .package files, so I don't know if there is something special I need to open them or what. I just want to be able to open my dowloads!!! What game is it? What web site are you getting them from or is it a game server? What are the names of the files? What happens if you save them and try to open them with IE?

The more information you can give us the better.

Thanks
The Sims 2, and I've been attempting to download custom content from www.thesimsresource.com
There are multiple files that I've tried to dowload, but an example of one would be Fence1Carlos_S2Studio.package, and the file type is package_auto_file

What's odd is that some of these files have worked before, but only sporadically. Now none of them whatsoever.

When I save a file and try to open it, a blank IE page opens and closes very rapidly, and afterward two small-ish windows pop up, one asking me if I want to save or open the file. If I click save, it will tell me the file is already saved and it'll ask if I want to save again. If I click open, the cycle repeats with a black IE page, the boxes, etc. It's very hard for me to explain because my knowledge is very limited..

I also tried going back to other files that I previously downloaded, to see if they would wok, but they don't!You may have to delete on the downloaded and saved files before attempting to redownload it again. The way you have described it is you are downloading the same files over and over again. Another is they may be corrupted. Always download from known legal SOURCES to avoid being infected.Been some time since i used Firefox so i am more than a bit hazy on how downloading is now done in it. But in case it produces a PROCESS similar to what happens in Opera (my BROWSER) when you select a "download" it does so in a separate location at the top of your task bar at the top of the browser window. It is a small window called (download). It can be opened to show the downloads that have accumulated there (if not removed0 and any current download being executed and it's progress. Once the file completes you must click on it to "open" it. Is it possible that is happening in your case? truenorthTools---Options---General tab---Downloads

Solve : Only ONE (mine) website won't load.?

Answer»

Two weeks ago my website stopped showing up in IE.

-Others can see it on their computers. But not any comps in my home.
-It is owned by me, so not banned.
-Worked fine for past 2 yrs.
-Cleaned up all cookies and temp files, reset router, used ccleaner.
-Hosting company said it is working properly.
-Using a free proxy to view website works.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, this is driving me nuts.

Use win7.Does it work in other browsers (Firefox, Opera, Safari, Chrome)?

Have you checked the HOSTS file? What is a hosts file?
First answer the other question please - then we'll determine if we need to modify the hosts file.-Tried downloading Firefox-- Will not work in that either.

Solve : Lock pad setup?

Answer»

How do I lock my Internet? You're going to have to elaborate. "lock my Internet" is too brief for us to know what you WANT. Drive up to my house and try to GO on line and about 4 different wifis COME up but mine is the only one with no little pad lock next to it. Anyone could get online using my wifi. I thought I set it up but I must have done something wrong.Apparently, you have not enabled WPA encryption. A REFERENCE: http://netsecurity.about.com/od/quicktip1/qt/qtwifiwepwpa.htmYou can use a set of login information for the WiFi and use internet without any problem, no one can access internet without the login information.

Solve : how to create a namespace for url??

Answer»

Seen namespaces before used so that you can type part of a domain name with out the full path, as well as I believe you can make anything for a namespace name = any url path, but cant seem to find any INFO on making namespaces for url's to have a custom shorthand for my home computer browser. I have never seen this done on a regular home computer and always at a company where there are workstations which are part of a domain and of which have group policy's etc passed down from domain CONTROLLERS etc. Can namespaces be added to a single home user computer or is it part of a server setup such as a proxy?

I am thinking I would just have to edit the HOSTS file maybe to make this work, but that might be the ugly method to make this happen. So would I have to edit the HOSTS file to point to the full URL path for whatever I want as a namespace or is there a better method? It is hard to understand what you want to do.
You can make a HTML page with URLs in it and give them short names. On you can have a folder on the desktop that has shortcuts and URLs with shot names. For example, here is a folder I can open from my desktop, it is called 'MoreLinks' which has both internet and program shortcuts in one place. I can rename them what ever I want and to invoke any all I have to do is just click on it. The internet shortcuts are made by the browser with a flick and click of the mouse. (Takes a little practice.)

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Hello Geek-9pm

The URL namespace is like being able to type ABCD into your browsers URL without http://www and the following.com and have it resolve to say www.yahoo.com. I am thinking that you could create a namespace as short as a single character maybe if not a DOUBLE character to have say G bring you to Google, Y bring you to Yahoo, and F bring you to facebook, although might need to use double characters minimum so that it doesnt think its a drive letter such as a mapped or local drive at G: , Y: , or F:

I have seen namespaces used in the URL bar in corporate networks to be able to type in say ABCD and that then cross references to somewhere in the system that directs that ABCD namespace to the desired location. I was thinking today about how cool it would be to be able to type in a single character or double character for frequently visited sites without use of favorites list or creating a custom web page with hyperlinks to the list of frequently visited places.

I am thinking I might be able to do this by tweaking my HOSTS file to tell it that Y or YY=www.yahoo.com and G or GG = www.google.com and F or FF = www.facebook.com as well as some other sites that have very long url paths that cane be a simple ZZ and enter key. But before tweaking my HOSTS file, I figured I would run this by everyone to see if this is the correct way to do this or if there is a more professional method than a HOSTS DNS tweak. Most people use the HOSTS file to create a black listing pointing to 127.0.0.1 to terminate to local loop back IP for sites you want to block access to etc. But I am thinking it might work for a namespace to function maybe although maybe a crude tweak of the HOSTS file for something it MAY not have been intended for.Quote from: DaveLembke on April 17, 2011, 02:09:06 AM

The URL namespace is like being able to type ABCD into your browsers URL without http://www and the following.com and have it resolve to say www.yahoo.com.
There's no need to type http:// in your browsers address box. Your browser will add that. And, for a .com website, the www and the .com do not need to be typed. For example, to go to Yahoo!'s website, just type yahoo and hit Ctrl/Enter. Your browser will supply the www and the .com. And, the next time you go to Yahoo!'s website, just typing y in your browser's address box will bring up www.yahoo.com unless you've CLEARED your browser cache and if you have not visited other sites that start with y. If you have visited other sites that start with y, then you may need to type one or two more letters, i.e. a, maybe h, and so forth, depending on the degree of similarity of the other addresses starting with y.

Right now, if I just type f, facebook.com/ appears in the address box and I can just hit Enter to go to the website. I'm using Opera at the moment but Firefox does the same.

You can also the Speed Dial feature with Opera or Firefox. With you can also enable the Bookmarks Toolbar in Firefox or the Bookmarks Bar in Opera to display most frequently visited sites on a toolbar at the top of the browser. So, I don't see the need for the "namespace" idea. If you use Firefox and the default address bar behaviour is to Google's I'm Feeling Lucky search, then all you need to do is type what you want and press enter, e.g. "yahoo" will bring you to yahoo.com, "yahoo mail" will bring you to mail.yahoo.com, "gmail" will bring you to mail.google.com etc.

Solve : Just This One Website Freezes Up My PC!?

Answer»

One of my favorite websites always freezes up my computer! Other websites do not do this. I've done everything I can think of to fix this problem. I did a complete system recovery. I've ran CCleaner. I've upgraded to IE8 (I have Windows XP and my pc is about 5-6 years old and I can't afford a new one!). I've use PC TOOLS antivirus to check for the bad stuff and I have 360 Amigo System Speed Up to CLEAN my registry and other junk off my pc. If there's any other things I should try, please let me know. The website that gives me the problem is EarthClinic.com It is not a "flashy" website or anything, so I just don't know what the problem is! PLEASE HELP!
janetleeRegistry cleaners/mechanics are not popular or RECOMMENDED in these forum and they can do more harm than you EXPECT it to fix your problem. So please stay away from these fake softwares or programs.
Quote

I did a complete system recovery
What do you mean system recovery? Please explain further. If the only problem is a website on IE8 and not on other websites but want to keep using IE, try these FIRST 2 suggestions:
1. Right-click your IE8 icon on your desktop and choose "start without addons". Check now your link and post the result.
2. If first suggestion did not make any difference then close IE8 and relaunch it. Go to Tools, Internet options, Advanced Tab and below is a Reset option for IE.
There is also a possibility that you are infected, so you might want to update and scan your PC with your resident antivirus plus download and use a free software for malware and spyware called Malwarebytes and Superantispyware.By complete system recovery, I mean that I started my pc all the way back to how it came when I got it. I lost some songs and photos (but not all) by doing that, but I was sick and tired of trying!
I tried to do as you suggested by running Superantispyware, but it made no difference. I also right-clicked on my IE icon, but all that came up was the "Open
Run As...
Send To
""""""""
all the way down to Properties.
I didn't see the list you mentioned "about add-ons".
I was worried about trying the Reset option for IE since I'm not sure what all I will lose on my pc. I've already had quite a time dealing with recovering my stuff lost with the system recovery. Of course I had tried System Restore first, but it didn't work.
I'm obviously a pc ignoramus. I wish I could afford to take my pc to an expert, but I truly can't. My mom is sick and I've found a lot of good info on Earth Clinic that I like to use, otherwise I would just say "FORGET IT!"
Thanks for your trying to help!
Any further advice I'll appreciate. If you say to still do the Reset option on IE, I will do it!
janetleeTry a different browser like firefox or chrome and see what happens. You should always have a couple of browsers for when you have problems with a web site.I just downloaded Firefox Mozilla and I am thrilled to say that I can now go on Earth Clinic again!! Thank you ever so much!!!
janetleeIt is the problem with IE most of the times, we dont have a secure browsing and encounter some errors most of the times while browsing,. that's why i prefer Firefox.

Solve : Mozilla releases Firefox 5, first rapid-release version?

Answer»

Read up a little more on it in some other articles.

Seems they are switching to a "Rapid release" format (well, this thread title explains that). which means a new major version every 6 weeks.

I personally don't understand. The format of a version number is generally accepted to be- across many platforms-

Major.Minor.Revision.Build

Major version changes indicate major changes to the software.
Minor version changes indicate more minor version changes, more features, but same general FEEL.
Revisions can often be used to indicate bugfixes; builds are simply the number of builds made.

of course this is hardly something that is enforced; you can call your software whatever version you want. Chrome, for example, has had this release schedule pretty much since the start.

But it sort of asks the question- "why?".

What was wrong with the old version format? There isn't really a good reason to increment the Major version based entirely on a span of time; it generally should reflect feature changes. Are we to expect FF 13 this time next year? Maybe we need a system where every browser is updated every day. Start with Jan 2000. So the version number is simply the number of days fro the base year. That way, it you use the browser every day, you know it is up to date!

There are a lot of articles/blog posts about how "unnecessary" versioning is. But the way I see it- if it was unnecessary, we wouldn't be using it. "versioning" was originally devised so that later releases of software could be easily differentiated from earlier versions. Otherwise, we would have had to figure out some other way of determining the capabilities, features, and documented flaws and bugs in our software. Why? Because it may affect us. The idea of a "rolling release" where your software is updated automatically, both without your knowledge, without a prompt, and so forth, just feels silly to me. I can understand what they are after- updates that are as transparent as possible- but do we really want the update to be transparent? And do we really want to "force" users to upgrade? After all, new versions of software fix bugs, but they also inevitably introduce new ones. Sometimes you want to wait- and let other people test an updated version- before you dip in your big toe, so you can know what to expect.

Most of this is centered around Chrome. And really, I'm not SURE why. If Microsoft was to implement something similiar in any of their free products they would be flamed constantly "stupid Micro$haft always forcing their newest crapware on me"! In fact they still get flamed to *censored* even though the updates are free, optional, and actually tell you what they are. And then people decline the update in droves and CONTINUE to complain about how the old versions are insecure.

And yet, Chrome can update silently without any prompt or anything and it get's a freaking medal? I think this is a case of looking at the software through google glasses, I've noticed that anything that google does seems to be regarded as "revolutionary" even if it is an ancient concept; then everybody oooh's and awes about how clever and forward thinking they are, and tries to emulate them, poorly.

First: the "silent and automatic" updates don't apply to all software. Browsers and other network related applications I can understand, but stuff like word PROCESSORS, Spreadsheets, and other client applications- it just doesn't make sense. What if Microsoft had rolled out, say, Office 2007 this way? (I mean, ok, they aren't giving it out for free, but work with me here, it's a hypothetical situation). One day somebody is using 2003, they quit, and restart, and poof- it's office 2007- toolbars are now ribbons and all that.

Would they be regarded as new an innovative? Of course not. The only reason that this sort of a rolling release concept works for Google Chrome is because- well, they look and feel the bloody same. I mean, seriously, when I started up chrome earlier- it was version 8; waited a few minutes for the update to finish (which I manually have to watch via the about box), restarted, and I was on version 12; but with no outwardly visible difference, aside from the icon change. And I can't recall it being much different for any previous version I had.

This is why it works for Google chrome- they aren't making... major changes to the software. Compare IE6, IE7, IE8, and IE9 to each other and there are outwardly obvious changes between them; compare Firefox 1,2,3, and 4 and they are all different. This is why I think everybody JUMPING on the "Silent updates for everybody" bandwagon will both miss the boat and do so in a tortuous manner- they will try to do this for software updates that make elementary changes to the way the software looks and/or feels, and that will leave them with frustrated users wondering what the heck is going on.Quote
d...o we really want to "force" users to upgrade? After all, new versions of software fix bugs, but they also inevitably introduce new ones.
No.
And if I were presently working in a software development team, I would be ashamed to say that our team's design has to be updated every week, or even once a month. Do the people working on these projects have no pride in their work? There was a time when you got to version 2.2 of a major product, it would be stable for a long time. The developers were onto other projects. They should just put an odometer on it...Install this add-on, and Google & Yahoo Toolbars will function with FF5.0.

I can get email and other web pages just fine. Also I am running the full paid version AVG suite. Did a full scan and its clean.

Thanks

The update cache was corrupted. I stopped the update service and set it to disable. Next a reboot and then renamed the software distribution folder in the windows directory. Change the update service back to auto and did another reboot. Windows re-created the software distribution folder. I was ABLE to do my updates. Thanks

Today almost all browsers are the same speed, or at least so close it doesn't make any difference. The browser you use now has more to do with the look and feel you like.

If you feel it's slow, it's more than likely it's your ISP or your machine. There are several ways to test your speed at sites like speedtest.net, DSL reports, etc. and make sure your are getting the speed you are paying for.

Using a cabled connection to the router, instead of wireless, means a cable would need to be run from upper floor to basement, or vice versa, depending on where the modem is located. Wireless would avoid the need to run the cable between floor LEVELS.

Might be an idea to tell us what you have actually tried, so that people do not suggest them. Nvm It's working again, weird.Where ya been ? ?
if you are using a old version of the browser try installing the latest version accompanied with adobe flash player.

then check the you tube at night which will not so busy, some times you tube doesn't work due to their maintenance periodQuote from: anushka256 on July 08, 2011, 11:15:52 AM

Solve : someone is giving my e-mail info out as a prank?

Answer»

I have been receiving e-mails that say that they are coming because my info was GIVEN to an on-line type of form, e.g. donations, self-help, etc. I believe I know who it is doing this but I can't prove it. They e-mail used isn't our primary. It is an OLD e-mail that we just don't use. This "harassment" is aimed at my husband. But now the person filling these out is using my maiden name as my husband's last name; this makes it more worrisome since I have an uncle with that name. I am at a loss. We called the police when we received the prison pen-pal letter. They were not the most helpful.

I don't open any of the e-mail for fear of some bad virus etc. I have tried contacting some of the ORGANIZATIONS back but many times they just apologize and remove our DATA from their lists.

Any recommendations?Quote from: AirHalling on April 01, 2011, 01:30:56 PM

It is an old e-mail that we just don't use.

Seems like the simplest thing to do would be close the account.

Solve : AOL browser and emails?

Answer»

Bit of a long shot but does anyone use AOL per chance?
My friend uses AOL both as her browser and for her emails. (she has Vista by the way, and her AV is AVG).
The only thing that she has just installed is the latest Java Update and CCleaner, no other changes have been made for weeks.
We are communicating via a trusted website forum with no problems to date, and yesterday she also posted me from her AOL email to my hotmail account with no problems.
She has just posted via the web forum that when she now sends mail to my hotmail account (and to another of her friends who also has a hotmail account), that they are returned as unsent?
I've asked her to see what the error message was but in the meantime, not knowing much about AOL email, has anyone any ideas?
Are there any settings or something that need altering, and why has this all of a sudden happened within the past 12 hours?
RegardsIf she's using an AOL browser, she's working with an antique and needs to move up with the times. Show me any source of browser usage statistics that even mentions an "AOL browser". There no longer is an AOL browser except for some antiquated thing. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AOL_Explorer as a historical reference.

I recommend she DUMP the "AOL browser" and AOL email. A Google gmail account would be a good option.

Thank you Soy,
I've now opened an account with AOL (temporarily) and got onto their email system (to see what's all about).
Can't see anything untoward apart from, as you say, why AOL.
There is NOTHING in there to block emails UNLESS you specifically state an address/site.
I agree and think that she should use another account!
Will get back and nag her, but it's nice to hear some feedback from this site.
Thanks
Regards

Just an update as L'm finding it difficult to contact her at the moment.
She has however opened a hotmail account and got in touch. I posted her and she received this.
Sorry it's all so vague at the moment and l REALLY appreciate any input.
To digress, i'm with Free.fr who are really just my ISP, are brilliant in the services they provide, but l can't stand their in-built email system. I switched to Thunderbird, using them as the supplier, and have had no problems since.
If she can't recieve hotmail emails through AOL's email system, but can through hotmail, then it is unlikely to be AVG causing the stoppages, it's got to be AOL themselves?
I think she's going to be happy with just the hotmail account, but l was just intrigued as to why AOL seems to be barring these and not others.
Anyway, will keep everyone posted.
RegardsQuote from: willythecat on June 28, 2011, 11:10:13 AM

Right. hotmail is not a normal POP-type email account. It can be set up in email clients such as Outlook Express, and other Microsoft email clients because Microsoft specifically includes the capability add a HTTP-based hotmail account. So, I'm not surprised to hear to she can't receive hotmail emails via her AOL email service.

Solve : Does Firefox 4 run slow on XP Pro for you also??

Answer»

I tried it a few DAYS ago, and my cpu was running 100% with 3 tabs open. I was watching a YouTube video in the process. The video was sluggish. I downloaded Opera, and didn't have a problem. I went back to Firefox 3.6., but had the same problem! I really like FF, but it's annoying to deal with at times. Opera and Chrome's extentions aren't that freat to me. Especially when it comes to blocking ads. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

2.67GHz. 248 MB of RAMYou may want to check other running processes...not just FireFox...DLoad and install Process Explorer.248MB of RAM is rather small for Windows XP. And, what about your video specs? Are you using onboard video or an add-on card? I suspect you're using onboard and it is allocated only 8MB system RAM; that would explain the difference between a normal 256MB amount of RAM and the 248MB you mentioned; in other words, Win XP is subtracting the "shared" 8MB from 256MB and reporting 248MB when you view System Properties by right CLICKING on Computer and selecting Properties. I meant to say, "There's no reason to use that now ..."yes i agree , i have POSTED the wrong link by mistake. Thanks anyway While not specificall on Firefox portable, I have come across this WEBSITE, which looks to have a lot of apps that have been converted to portable versions. Might as well get them from the source: http://portableapps.com/Check this TOOLS to create portable apps http://www.digitalprank.org/top-5-tools-to-create-and-run-portable-applications/ by the WAY this website http://portableappz.blogspot.com is good but most of it's files are uploaded to file sharing services so you have to wait for 50 seconds or SOMETHING before you download them.

Solve : Operation keeps getting aborted?

Answer»

We have a Toshiba P200 laptop and have been connecting it wirelessly to a computer in another room for the INTERNET. The laptop runs Vista Home Premium. Most websites work fine, but some it seems to have a real problem with. I keep getting "Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site -such and such - operation aborted." But I can see the page I want behind the error message so it's loaded most of the page. Clicking OK takes me to the cannot display page where no connetion problems can be found. I checked that SSL and TLS (WHATEVER they are) are enabled as suggested. Is it my browser or my security settings messing things up? It's very annoying to see the page you want behind the error message, then when you click on it you're whisked away to the "cannot display" page. Any ideas?A bit more INFO. The website I'm having problems with at the moment is supposed to allow you to put widgets onto your blog, so it may well be a security issue?
What version of IE (Internet Explorer) are you using? Did this problem start after updating IE to a newer version? Have you tried a DIFFERENT browser? If not, that may be the quickest solution. You could try Firefox, Chrome, OPERA, etc. They're all good.

Solve : Browser problem????

Answer»

On my laptop I have IE 9 and Vista. I have noticed that since I downloaded IE 9 over a month ago there are soemtimes things I can't do. For instance, on our banking site I can login fine but when I click on Make Payments it says "This SERVICE is temporarily unavailable". But we can go immediately to our desktop computer and make payments with no problem. What the HECK would cause this?? My laptop also won't allow me to login to my RETIREMENT website. Again, on the desktop - no problem - I can login. These are just a couple of of examples. It drives me and my wife nuts - HELP PLEASE!!! Well, we could discuss the issue you have with IE9 but I'm inclined to suggest you just try a different browser. I suggest you get Firefox 4 here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/fx/Thanks. I downloaded Google Chrome and it solved the problem.

Solve : slow web browser?

Answer»

why is it I have the fasted speed internet my provider offers but my internet is so slow to lead pages. Could it be my browser?Don't know. Try a different browser and COMPARE.Run a speed test (of your internet connection) to see your actual speed. One test site is www.speedtest.net. This is a way to verify your actual speed and compare it to what your ISP is supposed to be providing. Hi I just downloaded Mozilla Firefox 4 last week. So far I love it. It's much faster, has a different LAYOUT and look better. You can try it too so that you can compare it to your browser that you are USING right now. You can also post here if you found any problem with it. hope it did help you. Free up disk space. A hard drive that is close to being full will drastically slow down your computer. You can clear up space by deleting temporary internet files, empty your recycle bin, remove programs that you do not use, put IMPORTANT files on an external hard drive.

Another way to free up disk space is to use "Disk Cleanup" on your Windows PC. To do this, click "start" and go to "Accessories", go to "System Tools", and click "Disk Cleanup".

Scan for Viruses, Adware, and Spyware. These nasty programs can slow down your computer worse than anything. I would recommend purchasing software that can remove all three of these common problems.

Don't automatically start up programs when you turn your computer on. Close any programs that you do not use that open when you start up your computer. These programs will run in the background and steal RAM (Random Access Memory).

Defragment your hard drive. Defragging your hard drive places all of your information for each file in one place.

Solve : Blank Taskbars IE-8 XP?

Answer»

IE-8 Windows XP

Problem: On BOOTING, going on LINE and then opening IE-8 the toolbars are blacked out as shown at:

http://home.earthlink.net/~momotuk/IE8prob.gif

Note I run my desktop in Windows Classic theme as opposed to Windows XP Theme. If I now SET my desktop to Windows XP, the taskbars in IE-8 go back to normal. I can now reset my desktop to Windows Classic and IE-8 continues to operate in normal mode until I reboot for some reason.

Does anyone have a clue as to what is happening and ow to set THINGS so I don't NEED to switch to XP theme and back each time I reboot?

Click Start/ All Programs/ Accessories
Right click on the Command Prompt option, on the drop down menu which appears, click on the Run as Administrator option

Start the System File Checker

In the Command Prompt window, type: sfc /scannow, press Enter
You’ll see “the system scan will begin”.if this doesn't work download latest version of internet explorer and install.
alternatively you should try firefox For now, ignore the posts by moro.

A: YouTube RECENTLY split its content across TWO domains, likely for performance reasons. Therefore you must allow both youtube.com and ytimg.com (you're probably missing the latter).

Solve : Constant Hard Drive Activity Disappeared After Disabling Adobe Flash And Plugins?

Answer»

Usually i have 50 tabs open. I have upgraded Firefox to version 3.6.15 and ADOBE Flash to latest version 10.2.152.32 | 10.2 r152. After that STARTED seeing constant hard drive activity and plugin-container was taking over 300Mb. I have disabled all plugins and Adobe Flash. The end result was positive - plugin-container now takes 1Mb, there is not hard drive activity and when i click on already opened tabs, they open faster. I still have not tried reactivating all plugins, but have a feeling the problem is in Adobe Flash.

Does anybody have same problem?

Anybody knows where i can download previous Adobe Flash versions? I will have to downgrade because i cannot live without Adobe Flash.Archived Flash Player versionsHave you considered you may be infected ? ?@Geek-9pm

@Geek-9pm
Why are files so large?
They are debugger programs used by developers. Otherwise, Adobe recommends end-users should only user the currents version for Adobe Flash and Plug-Ins.

Some Mal Ware has propagated itself as bogus Adobe files. The real Adobe files are clean. To be on the safe side, download the real fies only after you know the PC is clean.

They aren't. they are patches for the MSXML library, and thus they are equally important on any system that happens to have the parser installed.

Solve : Unable to open any browsers but IE?

Answer»

Hi,
Since I am new here please forgive me if this question was answered before. I need someone to help me with my laptop since it is driving me crazy. I have sony vaio laptop with Vista home premium with IE 7 or IE 8 I am not sure. My problem is that the IE is the only browser that I can use, since when I try to use Firefox or Opera or Google Chrom it says that I have no interent connection (which is bull since I am online constantly using my wireless router). My other two laptops use these browsers with no problem. ANOTHER problem is that when i try to instal any anti-virus program it again says no connection so I cannot update them or even register them, which makes them useless. This is same issue with my bittorrent. It does not connect to internet. So to summarize, I can use IE, MSN, yahoo messenger and download from hotfile, megafile sites, I cannot use any other browser, torrents, or do any av update. My other two laptops work fine. I checked all firewalls (router and laptop) and I cannot find what is wrong. I do not think it is router since other laptops work fine. So it got to be something with this laptop. Please guys/girls help me with this one. Thank you in advance. What protection apps do you have and when was the last time you updated/ran them ? ?Avira antivirus - free edition, updated yesterday. Is this what you mean? Also the standard firewall, but when I turn off either of these I still have the same issue.Just a thought, try booting your computer into safe mode with networking. See if the internet works for you on the browsers you've indicated to be nonfunctional for you.Sorry may sound stupid, but how do I boot it in a safe mode?Reboot. As soon as the system begins to boot start tapping the F8 (function) key. This will take you to the advanced boot options screen where you can choose safe mode with networking.Well, I did what you had suggested and everything worked perfectly. But when I backed up from safe mode it stopped working. So now what? BTW thank you for all your help.Backed up? I'll assume you mean when you booted to normal mode. It may be some SOFTWARE loading with the system that is interfering. Let's see.

Open msconfig and choose selective startup (disable everything from loading) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. However, if the problem continues even with the first selective startup we'll have to FIGURE out something else.Just to keep you in loop, I've openned msconfig and did what you said (disabled everything from loading), but then I did not have any internet connection. So I openned msconfig and disabled load startup items (enabled load system services) and it did not work (I had interent connection but could not use other browsers but IE). So I will try to see what is cousing the problem, but there are so many things to turn on or off and when you go to services in msconfig on some of things it says that their status is "stopped" like computer browser. No need to continue with the test if other browsers do not work with a clean boot.Well I found a problem. Doing what you told me I found that for some reason OneCare Firewall still exist on my computer even though I uninstalled it. So what I did I openned msconfig and disabled OneCare Firewall and OneCare Antispyware and antivirus nad now everything works fine. Thank you for all your help. Just one more question. How do I find folder where OneCare is so I could permanently erase it from my laptop? If it's not in ADD/REMOVE programs you can download and run Revo Uninstaller - it will find and uninstall pretty much anything:
http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.htmlWell everything works fine now. Thank you for all your help. If I ever need any assistance this is the place where I will look for it. Thank you again. You're very welcome.

Solve : Java Won't Install on?

Answer»

I suggest, you uninstall IE9: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/how-do-i-install-or-uninstall-internet-explorer-9
It'll revert to IE8.
See, if you have same problem.I didn't have this problem with IE 8. Java worked fine on the 32-bit. I may try the uninstall TOMORROW - it's gettin kinda LATE here.Go ahead with that and if IE8 works fine, try to UPDATE to IE9 once more.

....and get rid of that registry cleaner...I got it working. I went back to IE 8 and then to IE 9 again. I then installed java in a brand new folder, and it's working now. Cool

Solve : Internet Explorer 9 RTM released?

Answer»

The Acid3 test is practically useless for determining wether a browser supports the current standard. Half of the reason for this might be because that wasn't what the test was for; the other half might be because it tests what the designers thought was going to be important 2 years ago.

1st: Acid3 tests The performance of a browser on a few edge case tests.
2nd: some of the tested items weren't even a standard yet when the test was conceived, and some of them have been removed.

Quote from: acid3 wiki page
To pass the test the browser must also display a generic favicon in the browser toolbar, not the favicon image from the Acid3 web server. The Acid3 server when asked for favicon.ico gives a 404 response code but with image data in the body. This tests that the web browser correctly handles the 404 error code when fetching the favicon, by treating this as a failure and displaying the generic icon instead.
This is utterly stupid. Like I said, it's testing edge cases for no good reason. This isn't even really a behaviour that is actually documented as having to be implemented this way, they just unilaterally decided that this way was the "right" way. No doubt they came to this decision by assuming that whatever Internet Explorer was doing at the time was the wrong way.

Whatever the case may be, Acid3 is useless when it comes to determining how good a browser is for web browsing. So I guess the question is, what is the Acid3 test good for?

Additionally MS had an explicit aim NOT to try to satisfy the acid3 test with IE9. This was for several reasons, not the least of which was every time they went on a limb and supported a draft standard the W3C chainsawed the branch they were on, leaving them dangling with their "proprietary" implementation of what was in the draft spec, and because they added it there were pages using it and they had to keep supporting it.

Draft standards aren't standards. But whenever they crop up or there are ambiguities in the specification (and there are, all over the damned place, or more likely many details are left up to the implementator) then suddenly at the next revision the W3C, in a totally unbiassed decision (/sarcasm), has decided that whatever way IE implemented the feature was "wrong" and all the others were right, and if there were named elements that were chosen for each implementation they go with some other browsers choice. Usually firefox, which seems to be a W3C favourite.

The thing is, despite my ravings above about IE9, I still think IE is handed the short end of the stick on a lot of things. IE6 didn't support a lot of features of modern browsing, but considering those features weren't even conceived in 2001 when it was released I don't see what people expect. is MS supposed to get a damned time machine and go back and fix them?

Either way, ALL browsers need workarounds for a number of things. Firefox is no exception. Chrome has at least 3 blatant DOM bugs, and I SAY blatant because they clearly do what they aren't supposed to do, or don't do what they are supposed to do. The excuse is of course that Chrome's "script compiler" or whatever they use "changes the behaviour" but that's not an excuse, it's a reason. Fix the damned bug, don't just close the bug with "do not fix" as if it's a non-issue.

Personally, Standards Nazi's piss me off. Of course there aren't any in this thread and I don't mean to imply that there are; but basically there is this overridding mindset that "browsers that support the standard are better". They aren't. Think about it. Browser compatibility is really only marginally better now then it was in the days of Internet Exploder 4 and Nutscrape Communicator; the only difference is that now there is some whimsical uncommunicable entity now called the "standard" that they are striving for, and somehow the browsers that fall under this flag more clearly are "better". This despite the fact that half of the standards themselves are ill-defined or leave the actual definition of a lot of the standard to the implementor, so there really is no HARD and fast way to actually test the standard or it's implementation, all it(acid3) tests is wether the implementation of the standard approximates what the implementor of the tests thinks it should. I have never met a skilled software developer who worked on medium or large-scale web apps with hundreds of thousands or even millions of users who didn't come to realize how horrible the W3C standards are. You come to realize that every browser has major bugs, even bugs between different versions of the same browser (Safari). You also realize that IE is the vast, vast majority of your market and that catering to IE is the single most important thing you can do. IE is a defacto standard and making sure your site works flawlessly with IE is priority #1. After that it's usually Safari and then Firefox (which holds a much smaller share of the market than most people seem to think). Trying to show some pictures of some test that really doesn't test what it claims to doesn't really change that.

To be fair, IE definitely has room for improvement -- all the browsers do -- but the attitude that IE with its ridiculous market share should conform to standards that aren't particularly better than the ones already established by IE is silly. Just because a "standards body" dictated a particular way for the web to function does not mean that it is sensible for this mandate to take precedence over reality. What's more, I do not believe that any innovation of significance will come from a standards body like the W3C. The best the W3C can do is come in after the hard WORK has been done and document the whole thing and maybe whine a bit when the actually innovator is unwilling to expend the resources to conform to this new, documented standard, which they often change seemingly just so they can do that whining.

In any case, the basic problem comes down to this; HTML and CSS are good for basic, text-rich documents and nothing else. And lately The problem is that we've been building more complicated, interactive web-based applications with this mess. Basically it's no different then how MICROSOFT Word is primarily a text editor but- for whatever reason- you can insert Controls and textboxes and buttons and stuff into a document, and even make your own "mini-application" using VBA. Yoy can add Ajax, JQuery, Javascript, and ten layers of stylesheets, but it isn't going to change the fact that HTML and CSS were not originally designed for what they are being USED for today. The fact that "tests" like acid3 even exist is a good illustration of that.

And lastly, Yes my last few posts have been long. I've been holding back for the last month or so and I have a lot of spare letters lying around to use up... Is [rl=http://clients.futuremark.com/peacekeeper/]Futuremark Peacekeeper[/url] a good browser performance benchmark tool?"Nutscrape" ? ?

Yer killin me..... Quote

I really don't need half of a page argument about it.
All I need to do is to visit couple of pages to see, if IE9 supports current standards, or not.

Rather popular page: NHL.com

Looks like a joke...Another example.
Go to NBA.com, hover over "Standings" to reveal drop-down menu:

Now, slide the cursor down to select ANY menu option and it disappears. No way to select anything I think I will wait a couple of weeks. Although I use FF almost all the time, I still usually keep IE up to date.Quote from: Broni on March 18, 2011, 07:08:40 PM

What do you mean by "No way to select anything"? It seems to work fine for me The menu doesn't disappear, and the selection appears in gray when you hover over the menu's links.

How to tell if standards are not being followed?Broni, the NHL page looks fine on my computer with IE9. See attached image.

I'm wondering what size monitor and resolution you are using.

Regarding the menu on the NBA site, I see like 2x3i5x; it works for me. As he said, when you hover over the item on the drop-down menu, it turns to a light gray; indeed, it's not easy to see. But, the mouse is clearly pointing to a hyperlink and clicking on it works.

Might be time for an eye exam.

I see, what the problem was.
Under "Accessibility" I had checkmarked options to ignore font sizes and styles on webpages.

Internet Explorer is a web browser. So, I'm wondering whether you really meant "Windows Explorer", which would make more sense regarding the problem with Control Panel. Please confirm that the message actually says "Internet Explorer".You are right it reads "window explorer is shutting down. " So SORRY. How long has this been going on? Did you make any changes (hardware or software) to your computer just before this problem started? Since the first occurrence, has this always happened when you try to open Control Panel? Just make sure you've nothing important going on in any of your tabs.

What a useful feature!

Obviously it's TESTING code they left in on the assumption that nobody would find it. Still; considering anybody can make a link to crash chrome EVEN me, not to mention it's possible to create redirects and other things via the web, I'd be surprised if this isn't leveraged for yet another scam; ASSUMING they don't fix it.Works in chromium too...Oh yea, Google Chrome has its exciting features and it is more SMARTEST than the others. I have been using it from the beginning of my internet browsing. Because, it has the some exclusive QUALITIES that is disappeared in the other.

I'm starting to feel desperate to fix it. Is it to early to reinstall windows and just wipe everything back to the beginning?

Considering the fact that you did not yet give Mozilla Firefox a try, yes.Raptor
I got some time today so I tried the Firefox that you recommended.
Happy to report that my internet works exactally like it did before and pages even seem to be loading a little quicker.
I guess the problem is in the Internet Explorer program somewhere.
So now the question is what do I do with IE if I'm not going to us it. Should I just leave it in the program files?
There is no way to remove Internet Explorer from the computer. You will need it for Windows updates. Your best bet will be to continue using the computer and turn on automatic updates if you can not manually update. Perhaps Internet Explorer will start to work again out of the blue. However, by that time you'll swear by Firefox..

I heavily recommend that you look into installing additional extensions for Firefox (Tools -> Extensions -> Get more extensions) to enhance your browsing experience.

Also Go to Tools -> Options -> Privacy -> Cookies -> Ask me when to set a COOKIE for superior cookie control. No tracking cookie is going to come through! If you haven't already done it, use the HiJackThis link that Raptor put up and get your log analysed.
The problem still remains.

Solve : Trouble Downloading a file?

Answer»

Thanks to everyone who tried to assist with the problem I described earlier in the month [see below], the problem turned out to be Norton Firewall. Turning off the "Privacy" allowed the file to download. However, I am turning the "Privacy" back on after each download.

I have an interesting but perplexing problem.
When I try to download from one particular WEB site I GET their notice “You have tried to access the download page directly OR your internet browser will not allow you to view this page.” The company has advised that I lower my security settings, which are at medium. I have tried LOWERING but get the same response.

I do not have this problem with any other DOWNLOADS.

I am using XP with SP2 and Internet Explorer with SP2. Also using Norton firewall, Pest Control, and Spy SweeperTry another download site.....maybe server error!Does the problem still occur when you disable the firewall for a brief moment whilst accessing the server? No.I do not know how the Norton firewall works, but you may need to ADD the website to a trusted website list. If such a thing even exists in Norton Firewall.

Solve : Opera Bookmarks?

Answer»

:)I want to backup my bookmarks at OPERA.

As internet explorer favorites are stroed in c:\windows\favorites

Where are opera bookmarks stored in the computer?
Wild guess for Windows XP

C:\My Documents and Settings\User\Application DATA\Opera Hi I use Win 98In W2K:-

Documents & Settings > *User Name* > Application Data > Opera > Opera > Profile > opera6.adrIn win 98

C:\Program Files\Opera

under this folder

there are some files but i do not find anything that contains the bookmarksgo to help in opera......The bookmarks file name will be in your profile folder and have a .adr extension.Hi

I located the .adr file at my "profile"folder

but when i clicked it , it told :

"This file does not have a program associated with it
for performing the action. Create an assocition in my computer by clicking vew and then clickingfolder option."

Then i went to "Mycomputer"-> folder option -->" file Types" tab.

But what to do from here?

PL guide.I thought you just wanted to back up the file. To do that you could copy it into a folder for 'safe-keeping' and then if anything untoward happened you could just paste it back.

I'm not really up to speed with Opera so I don't know whether it has a bookmark backup facility, perhaps a trawl through their Help forum could give you a more definitive answer.

You could try to open the .adr file with Notepad. Right click on file and select 'Open with...' and then select Notepad.

Good luck!

Forgot to mention, you can open the .adr file with Notepad.

Solve : Internet dial-up cell phone??

Answer»

I have a new notebook (pentium m), we use dialup for the internet, my question is; Is there a WAY to use the cell PHONE as the "land-line" dialer? Our dial up number is local and we GET free local calling on our cell phones. You'll have to ask your cell phone provider. Some have this ability, many don't. In any event, you will pay extra for this service. One of my friends did that, used the cellphone as the dial up, but alot of cable internet is fairly cheap now, I mean I would have paid more to install a landline and then get dialup than I did to pay for cable internet. Shop around and ask ?'s there's alot of lower bandwidth SERVICES they won't tell u about b/c theyre not so expensive. I pay $25/month for 128k. cable lite.hehe. yay danasoft. ^_^Certain Palm PDA can make use of Earthlink. This is a cable leading from the PDA to a cellphone that supported it. It may be available for LAPTOPS as well.

Solve : IE Favorites?

Answer»

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I didn't SEE it anywhere....
When adding a site to IE favorites sometimes the site has it's own icon which shows up when you drop the favorites menu. after a while it is replaced by the standard IE icon:
1> is this normal?
2> is there a WAY to retain the site icon?

Thanks Yes, this is normal. What happens is when you go to the site, they give you cookies and temporary files. This is why you see the icon. However, once you clear your temporary files, the image is gone.
