You should probably be expecting to see it appear in Windows Updates the next time your system gets updates.Just a few short days after delivering the first Release Candidate build of Firefox 4, Mozilla's senior director of engineering Damon Sicore has confirmed that the final build of the browser will be READY to launch before the month is out.

The browser's public release has been pencilled in for a March 22nd launch.

I guess IE9's release and Chrome's steady release of stable updates are getting Mozilla a little ITCHY to get on the boat too.

Solve : Can't Open links in my Outlook Email?

Answer»

Hi All. Desperately seeking help. I can suddenly not open any links on the emails I receive in OUTLOOK. A window pops up that says this operation is not allowed and to contact ADMINISTRATOR. I'm running Windows Vista, and as of a month ago, I could click on any links in my emails received and a new web page would open up as normal...not anymore. I've gone into the Control Panel, Internet and SET it as the default (IE) and checked to make sure nothing was amiss...I can't *see* anything that has changed and I'm baffled. Ideas? Grateful for any help!

CherieWhat version of Windows? What version of Outlook? Do you have any browsers other than Internet EXPLORER installed?

Did you make any software changes (installs, uninstalls, updates, etc.) just before this STARTED? What antivirus program are you using? Do you have any anti-spyware program installed?

Solve : Need settings for FireFox?

Answer»

Hello,
Am using FireFox and am mostly pleased for my browsing and work.

There are APPARENTLY some SETTINGS that need tweaked and I hope to get some guidance here on the forum.

1. Everything I download has to go to a floating window called downloads [in my documents] (here, I would like the download popup that allows me to choose destination aka IEx)
2. If I click on a .pdf, FF wants to install my .pdf reader each time, even though it is already installed.

As it is now, I oped IEx and do my downloads and .pdf viewing, then back to FF for browsing. Juggling between to browsers.

Hope I was able to convey my situation....

JohnHi John,

In firefox, go to the options MENU (click tools, then options from FF's menu bar), make sure you have "Always ask me where to save files" checked, as shown in screenshot below. This way, firefox should always prompt you for a specific location to save your files you wish to download.

What software are you using as your pdf reader? I have used adobe reader and foxitreader and both work fine on my PC with the firefox browser. Give them a try and see if one seems happy with your pc and firefox

Good luck, let us know how it goes

2X35iX,

Thanks for the reply! I am using Foxitreader and it is a great program.

Thank you, also, for the setting change!

yeah, it seemed that pdf files were not registered to be opened by any pdf reader by default. Probably that why computer keep prompting you to install one Guess you're all set?Quote from: jagwinn on March 13, 2011, 05:48:43 PM

What's a "floating window"? Do you mean the small Firefox window that opens when a download is initiated?

I LEAVE my Firefox set to download to the Downloads folder. It seems like a logical place to put them. If I want to move a particular file to another folder, I can do that later.

Solve : Opening files on browser instead of downloading?

Answer»

When clicking on links that point to a file on the some sites, my browser (IE/Chrome) used to open it as a pop up window instead of prompting me to save it. But now only Firefox do so, which I regard as normal.

While the same link open as pop-up in Firefox and not IE/Chrome, I assume it is not SOMETHING to do with the site, but the browser setting? I did not change any setting on my IE/Chrome, it just happen so all of a sudden.Quote

When clicking on links that point to a file on the some sites, ...
I think this needs some clarification. I believe you're TALKING about downloading a file. Is that right? Example, when I want to view my Purchase Order on my vendor's site, in the past, when I click on the PO number, it'll display as a pop-up, but now it prompts me to save the file as .aspx file. Did you CHECK your IE Internet OPTIONS->Security tab->Custom Level->look for Download options for enabling and disabling automatic prompting and file downloads. Click Yes and Apply. Also, if you right-click on the link do you have all of the options? What happens if you choose "open" from there?Hi Jason, IE and Firefox work fine. My problem occurs with Chrome.Hi Allan, in Chrome, when I right click on the link, I have Back, Forward, Reload, Save as, Print, Translate to English, View page source, View page info, Inspect elemenQuote
IE and Firefox work fine
Won't 2 browsers suffice your need?? My primary browser is Rockmelt. I don't use IE most of the time except when I need to download things (because both Chrome and Rockmelt never solved the CRASHING problem during downloading), and Firefox is slow and draining system resources that I have to restart it periodically. Well then, do you have the same problem with Rockmelt?Yes. Basically Chrome and Rockmelt are based on same platform, right?

Can someone e-mail me back with suggestions? Thank you.Iola Glista, Welcome to the CH forums. There are a number of options that you could try to solve your issue. However if i were in your shoes given that your ISP (att) has recently changed something re their service i would contact their tech support and see if they will help you to solve your problem. If you have and they haven't then please tell us so and we shall proceed from there. truenorthQuote from: Iola Glista on MARCH 08, 2011, 12:35:57 PM

UMM, have you checked your cable connections? Check the cable that connects to your modem and the cable that connects your modem to your computer. Make sure they are securely connected.

att connection manager is an unnecessary program but I won't suggest you remove it because, if you have to contact ATT support, they will probably insist that you need to use it.

I agree with truenorth. The first step should be contacting ATT tech support.

Solve : Java Console extensions in Firefox 3.6, how many should I have??

Answer»

Hey guys, I just upgraded FF to 3.6. Now, when I open the Add-ons screen, I see 6 entries of Java Console. They are, in this order:

Java Console 6.0.13
Java Console 6.0.14
Java Console 6.0.15
Java Console 6.0.17
Java Console 6.0.18
Java Console 6.0.12

Is this normal? I did not have all those in FF 3.5.8. In fact, I either none or only 1 in FF 3.5.8. If this is normal, why are they all necessary?

Perhaps I should mention, I also installed a "persona" right after installing FF 3.6. Persona may be the culprit...i'm not showing the same results...I just disabled all of them, closed FF, and then restarted it to see whether that would break the persona. It did not. Still, I suspect the viewing of various personas before choosing one is what's behind this. And, perhaps once one is installed, the Java Console is no longer needed.

When viewing the various personas, hovering the mouse over the persona makes it appear on the browser as it would appear if installed for permanent use. It's a way of previewing what a persona will look like on your browser. So, that functionality may be based on java. Still, if so, I wonder why that would generate the multiple entries/versions (maybe they aren't really different "versions") of Java Console that appeared in the Add-ons.

I may post a question on this in http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Support+Website+ForumsI'm having the same problem, EVEN after installing version 6.0.24 of the Java Console. About 5 older versions still installed as well. My guess is that the downloaded new versions of Java Console do not include anything for uninstalling the old versions. The INSTALLATION does NOT mention whether the older versions should be uninstalled.

I'm having a problem with my cross-browser setup (Firefox, IE8, Xmarks for Firefox, Xmarks for IE, and CheckPlaces; plus a few more not used RECENTLY) where the URL of a bookmark is occasionally changed to about:blank, by Firefox. Any idea if the extra Java Console versions have anything to do with this?

I've never used a persona, unless it was created without ever using that name for it.

64-bit Windows VistaAccording to http://kb.mozillazine.org/Java#Multiple_Java_Console_extensions

Quote

Starting in Firefox 3.6, a "Java Console <version>" extension will appear in the Firefox "Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions" list for each Java version installed (previous to Firefox 3.6, these extensions were hidden). [37] Uninstalling Java should remove the Java Console. Updating Java 6 Update 10 or later will remove the previous Java version but may not uninstall the Java Console for that version, causing Firefox to accumulate multiple Java Console extensions. You can uninstall all Java Console extensions from the Firefox Extensions list, since this extension is obsolete and has no function (see below). On Windows, if the Uninstall button for the Java Console extension is "greyed-out", exit Firefox, reopen Firefox from the context (right-click) menu "Run as Administrator" option, then try again. [38]
You can also manually remove unwanted extensions by opening the installation directory "extensions" folder and deleting the associated subfolder (e.g., to uninstall the Java Console 6.0.18 extension, open the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\ folder and delete the "{CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0018-ABCDEFFEDCBA}" subfolder). [39] [40] Starting in Firefox 4 (4.0b8) the Firefox installer and updater will automatically remove Java Console extensions from the installation directory "extensions" folder

It all starts with the NETSCAPE source release.

that source became Seamonkey; firefox was the result of turning seamonkey into a web browser rather then an integrated package (like netscape with all it's various bells and whistles). As far as I know Minefield is the 64-bit build of Firefox... anyway, Firefox and Seaweasel are certainly times of the same fork.

Quick google reveals that minefield also has 32-bit versions, and looks more like it is in fact a alpha of firefox, why they wouldn't just call it "Firefox Alpha Version whatever" is beyond me.

Also, why is it that they make 64-bit builds of prerelease code but ones it is in firefox they sort of push it aside and never actually build 64-bit? I mean, that just confuses people like me who like to pretend to know things.Quote from: Salmon Trout on March 06, 2011, 03:31:02 PM

I downloaded Mozilla and it worked, but I need to use IE8.
Why do you need to use IE8?See if this helps: http://iefaq.info/index.php?action=artikel&cat=42&id=133&artlang=enThe programmers at work said I had to use IE for somethings they have written.
I tried the script and it didn't help.
I tried IE 16 bit and it works, but flash doesn't work in the 16bit.
I'm not trying to be snide - but perhaps the programmers at work can offer some suggestions? It sounds to me like the problem is in fact caused by the very thing that they have written.

"No Such Interface Supported" is a standard COM error code (E_NOINTERFACE); this error occurs when a QueryInterface call is made ATTEMPTING to acquire an interface ID that the object doesn't support.

Now the question may be brought up how that is at all relevant; well, consider for a moment that a 32-bit COM component would not even load at all in 64-bit; the additional mention that you need IE leads me to believe that for whatever reason your WORKPLACE has instituted a policy whereby all machines have specific Internet Explorer Addons installed- written in-house. It also SEEMS clear that these addons are relatively poorly written in that they aren't doing proper error handling; in 64-bit the plugins aren't loading (because they are 32-bit), and other browsers don't load them for obvious reasons. IE 32-bit loads the plugin/addons properly, but the addons error out later on attempting to acquire a interface for some other component. This is further reinforced in that overriding link behaviour is something that is a relatively common task for such addins to do. (in the case of a company, for example, it likely creates an audit trail)

On the other hand, however, the "error messages" you posted half-appear as if they are in fact javascript errors and not related to COM at all; but that raises the question of why 64-bit would work fine once again; the only possible reason I can conceive is once again that a 32-bit component is being used that has issues that simply cannot be loaded to begin with in 64-bit.I've seen a similar problem under IE8 whenever I had Adobe Flash Player disabled or not installed yet, and tried to access a site showing a video.

Solve : Firefox/Flashplayer?

Answer» HELLO Forum: Am running WinXP -using IE6.x-I installed Firefox 1.04 - Alternating between browsers- Did not change any BROWSER defaults in Firefox or IE- Cannot get Macromedia Flash to download and use with Firefox- It came installed with WinXP when I bought computer-Tried 6 times to install it when using the Firefox browser-Macromedia site says it is there but when I go to a site using Flash Player and am using Firefox it says I must get Macromedia Flash Player installed- Flash Player WORKS fine when using IE-Is this a Windows issue or a browser issue and could you please help me fix it . It appears in my programs list but will not function when I use Firefox THANK You

Go on a website that uses flash, then a yellow bar should appear at the top saying you need additional plug-ins click the 'Install Plug-ins' and follow the steps from there.http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

[glb]Gizmo73[/glb]Hello, Bill.

Your PROBLEM is still not resolved?

You should check if your Firewall, virus scanner or spyware scanner are actively blocking Flash elements. I do not know what else could cause the problem if the installation was done properly and your browser(s) set to use Flash.

Solve : where is netscape 7.2 ??

Answer»

I googled for netscape 7.2

and clicking on the links , i everytime got netscape 8.0.

where is netscape 7.2?Try www.download.com or using Limewire...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Netscape didn't waste anytime archiving version 7.2 I've read that version 8 is not worth your time and is schizo between IE and Firefox.

Get Netscape 7.2 at:

http://browser.netscape.com/ns8/download/archive72x.jsp

Hope this helps. from that link , after downloading 7%, it again returns to 0% and starts freshly. This happened the next time also.

I think my computer is not meeting the reuirement.

Is it wn98 SE?

I have win 98. p2 350Mhz Ram 128mbThe requirements for Netscape 7.2 are:

* Windows 98 or 98SE, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP
* Intel PENTIUM class 233 MHz (or faster) processor
* 64 MB RAM
* 26 MB of free hard disk space

Are you using some sort of a download manager? If so, turn it off. Sounds like a connection problem. If your computer does not meet the requirement for any program installation, usually the software will issue a message, not the OS. During the download the OS just sees a data stream of bits and bytes.

Good luck.Hi thanks

my computer is meeting the requirement .

then why it is doing so?

Shall i delete the PREVIOUSLY dowbnloaded setup file from my DESKTOP which was incomplete?

i am not using any downld mangr, using opera 8.0.1( by the way opera don't have java installed). You can safely delete the setup file. Are you SURE it's incomplete? Netscape is a large download. However it downloads a small setup file first. Once that is done, you click on the setup file and the REAL download starts.

Having JAVA should not effect your download capabilities. Is this a dialup connection or broadband?

Good luck.

Solve : Can't access one certain website?

Problem with website: beatthegeek.com

Info:

From desktop I can access site just fine.
From laptop I have been able to access site with no problems, but just recently, my laptop won't connect to beatthegeek.com at all.

What I have checked

1. All other websites connect with no problem.
2. I have tried both IE and Firefox, no connection with either.
3. I have checked both browsers Privacy settings and site isn't in blocked sites.
4. I have checked Host FILE and website isn't listed.
5. I have asked website owner if he blocks IP addresses and if mine was perhaps blocked, but it isn't.
6. I have ran HijackThis and log looks normal.

Also, when I do a google search the site comes up BLACK not blue and isn't click-able. See below:

Any ideas would be helpful.

Thanks,

No I can't. Browser just sits there. Isn't that the IP from beatthegeek.com though?Yes. I wanted to see, if it's not DNS issue.

See, if you can get to the site from Safe Mode with Networking.Could your own ISP be blocking it?Do both your desktop and laptop USE the same internet connection? If not, I think you could follow up Fed's suggestion above.Quote from: Broni on February 20, 2011, 03:01:19 PM
Yes. I wanted to see, if it's not DNS issue.

See, if you can get to the site from Safe Mode with Networking.

I can't access the site from Safe Mode with Networking and both computers use the same internet. Were you booted off the site ? ?Good thought, Patio.

Delete cookies and try again. If that works then create a new login and have at it.Try going to the WEB site thought a proxy, if it does work contact you isp and im pretty sure what cause it is you ip not working at the right time, all so try ping the web page,

Start, Click run
type command
once open type ping (url of site)
if i comes up with sever not found it should be able to be fixed by a call to you ispSomeone's feeding the Parrots again...Does your antivirus software have the capability of blocking certain websites? If so, check the list of which ones it's blocking.

Are you running firewall software on that computer with similar blocking capability? If so, check there as well.

Solve : Web Thumbnailer - Not enough storage is available to process command?

Answer»

Anyone know of a way to find out where the flaw is in this software. After a short while it complains with error message of "Not enough storage is available to process this command", yet I have 40GB of 160GB HD FREE, and my available Ram is hovering at 500MB of 1GB, running Windows XP Home SP3 on Dual Core Atom CPU on my netbook.

I have tried to CONTACT the programmer to ask about what COULD cause this, given he was the one who put the error message in his program, but its been about a month of repeated e-mails out to him and no response, and the website is dated 2007 so he might not be managing it anymore.

Only way to reset this error is to reboot windows. If you exit the program and then restart the program it complains immediately with the same error. ( So I am thinking its a Cache Issue - overflow maybe, in how it uses IE's engine to navigate to web pages and then save them as images for archiving web pages just as they can be viewed but flattened in an image with no further functionality.)

Perfect for archiving sites with text that you want to look back at such as articles etc, but can be used for just about any purpose to snapshot webpages for reference as jpgs or bmps.

http://www.priyatna.org/webthumbnailer.php

Is there a way to see if a buffer is full in cache? Such as a buffer that IE would be using, where I am expecting to find the issue? Is there a way to reset all Cache without having to reboot the computer to reset a buffer that may have overflowed?

For now its set it and when it crashes, look at the DATA captured and remove from the list that of which processed correctly, save the list as text file, reboot windows, copy/paste the list of URLs and then run it again until it crashes and then repeat. Eventually i will have everything I want to capture.

*Also to note it doesnt always crash after say 20 pages captured. It seems random in how MUCH is captured before it bales out with that error, and only reset is system reset to get it to run further. If it crashed always after so many pages etc then that would be a nice indicator of where to look for the flaw in which maybe I can band-aid this issue by another program that would clear the buffer etc after so many minutes etc. Although it can be hairy with resetting a buffer that is in current use by the app and maybe this is not repairable... Its too bad his Delphi source is not available to look at the source and pick away at it for potential or known flaws in the code.Quote from: DaveLembke on March 04, 2011, 12:13:30 AM

Anyone know of a way to find out where the flaw is in this software.
Easy. He isn't using the WebBrowser Control correctly.

Quote
I have tried to contact the programmer to ask about what could cause this, given he was the one who put the error message in his program
Except, he's not. The Error Is From Internet Explorer; the error cascades back to the application and causes it to crash. IE stays running because it "handled" the error (by sending it back to the application) Empty IE's cache; or, increase the allocated size of the cache. The Error itself is a Standard Windows Error (code .

Normally, the cache is purged to make ROOM for new entries, but the program makes IE throw new stuff onto the cache so fast that the cache algorithm can't find anything it feels it can safely discard (they are using the Web Browser control, which is designed to be used by a Human, not necessarily controlled by the program, so obviously it's not exactly designed for the case where pages are fetched constantly and fill the cache). By default the cache is 50MB; you can increase this by using Internet Explorer's "Internet Options" dialog, General Tab; "Settings" for "Browsing History" and increasing the "temporary Internet Files" size.

you likely get the crash when you start the program up again because Internet Explorer is an Out of Process component; that is, the program itself is using a separate iexplore.exe to work with the web pages, when the application crashes, that executable is now orphaned, but the program "reconnects" to it so to speak when you start it again, creates the control, which subsequently crashes while trying to store data in the cache. End the iexplore process and you should be able to "restart" the application without problems.

Thanks BC ... When I stopped the program before it crashed, then went into IE to adjust the settings it greeted me with the fact that the space was already over its size limit and it wanted to adjust itself to 1024MB

Going to save new settings and restart application and see if this did the trick...it sure looks like this was the cause. MANY MANY THANKS to sharing with me the likely cause and being extremely knowledgeable with IE and the way this programmer was passing the URLs to the browser!!! That definately fixed it...before it would crash frequently and its chugging away without errors now...at least not until I exceed 1024MB..lol

Thanks BC for solving this for me... I should have posted this issue a few weeks back! Cool, good news... just don't go trying to make pictures of thousands upon thousands webpages in one go and you should be fine

Solve : Problems going online - low bytes received?

Answer»

This is probably going to sound like a dumb question but its driving me nuts. Recently (started 2 days ago) I started having problems getting online. I am with Bigpond dial up and normally access the web 3 times a day to check emails and look at ebay etc. But now every time I go online I get nothing. Every link I type comes up 'Page cannot be displayed', and OE cant access any new emails. When I check the Bigpond status it says there is a connection but the bytes received is very low, about 250, compared to over a 1000 transmitted. I have to come off the internet, clear all cookies/cache and then go back online. Each time I do this its fine, until the next time I go online.
Any answers what is causing this, when its been fine previously? Its costing me a fortune to keep dialling up and its pain in the rear to clear cache etc 3 times a day.
I am on XP, using Explorer 6.

By the way Bigpond said that its not the server when I rang them, they said I needed to clear the cache which has obviously been done but its not the solution long term!

Any help appreciated!!Scan for Trojan Horses, Spyware and Viruses.are you using any p2p programs..is this a 56k modem...first check is what raptor has said..then download window washer from www.webroot.com if you can ...and set it to clean up after using the NET. and have a look in the events VIEWER admin tools ...error log to see if it tells you more...OK I am on 56k modem, although Bigpond normally connects at 46-50.
Ran spyware DETECTOR, no trojans or spyware (apart from a bit of adware). Ran Panda active scan, no viruses. I have Norton already installed, firewall and AV so am protected. I have DOWNLOADED window washer, and will be using that.
Sorry to sound dumb, what is p2p? Not sure if I have that. Also what should I be looking for in the error log as it all looks foreign to me.
Also, dont know if this is connected to the problem or not, but the day previous to all this starting on my pc I used the remote control feature to access my mums pc in the UK as she has had problems and I was trying to sort them out, also she took control of my pc for a short time.
Any ideas? Also when I go online and it has this problem, I try pinging Bigpond but it wont work, even though Bigpond says I have a connection

Tried running the window washer when I came offline earlier, still had problems going back online later in the day. Wouldnt let me access until I had done the cache and cookies again p2p= programs like kazza blubster... peer to peer...

Solve : Opening GIF Images?

Answer»

I feel so computer illiterate writing this, but I need your help...
Prior to the release of SP2, I downloaded Moxzilla Firefox & Thunderbird. Although Moxzilla has some fine qualities, now I'm having regrets. People have trouble opening my e-mails, and I can't open any GIF IMAGES SENT to me.
I have SINCE downloaded the SP2. I quess I need some help in reconfiguring my computer so I can go back to using IE & Outlook only. I can't figure out how to transfer my newly added BOOKMARKS from Firefox to my previous ones in IE, and also my added address from Thunderbird to Outlook.

Firefox Mozilla does not send E-mail. it is a web browser.

I have no experience with Thunderbird, but I'd SAY you have it improperly configured if E-mails cannot be read by others.

Solve : MSN messenger & IE?

Answer»

Why msn messenger doesn't SIGN in when internet explore is set on offline? MSN messenger is 6.2 version and OS is Windows XP.MS likes to make completely different apps WORK alongside each other. This can be good, but more often than not it's just plain annoying (just try REMOVING IE completely...)

Probably not much you can do about this one, I'm afraid.dratul.....Do you mean you cannot access MSN messenger if your IE is not open ? Or do you sign into MSN messenger from IE ?

let us KNOW
no i don't sign from IE. But when I want to sign in msn messenger and if IE is set WORK OFFLINE(means if that option is ticked or selected) then the msn gives an error messege that msn cannot opened as IE is on OFFLINE. then i have to DESELECTED WORK OFFLINE. then there is no problem in signing in msn. With regard to your inquiry, Internet Explorer can only be use as external browser while online with Wal-Mart Connect. Also, Wal-Mart Connect uses your computer's Internet Explorer as it default browser, so you can say that you are already using the Internet Explorer browser.

Solve : IE7 and IE8?

Answer»

Hello!
I am currently using IE7 and Vista Basic Home. No problems, really. I used IE8 with WinXP and like very much the fact that the FIND ON THIS PAGE search box stays open from site to site, page to page. I just click on the search term with the mouse and the page is searched.

On IE7, the search box dissapears when I go to another site/page and must be again selected from the EDIT pulldown.

Here is the problem! I went to Windows Upgrade site, and selected IE8 to download. It tells me I need to have additional Vista updates to complete the download and leave a link on the DESKTOP. The links on the desktop are DEAD.

I then did something silly!! I tried to download IE7 (the very browser I was using) and MICROSOFT says that IE7 is NOT COMPATABLE WITH THIS OPERATING SYSTEM.

I will continue to use this IE7 and put up with the clumsy FIND ON THIS PAGE panel, but I thought this was and interesting situation.

John
Are you getting Windows Updates on a regular basis? You should normally get some automatic updates at least once every month.

Did you try to get Windows updates, not an IE update, but Windows updates? Try getting them via Windows Update on your Programs menu.

Regarding the Find function in IE7, I think you'll find the keyboard shortcut, Ctrl/F useful. It saves moving your mouse to Edit on the main menu to get to Find.

Hello Soybean,

I did follow a habit of upgrading Windows, until the last time for Vista Basic Home. At the last upgrade, the OS went crazy. Looping start to load to SHUTDOWN. I eventually got it to start in safe mode and did system restore before the update.

This same thing happened with the WinXP Home Media Edition on the other HD.

I have not updated any Win OS since then. I thought if the IE8 needed just the 3 files that were listed on the links posted to desktop by the update WIZARD then I WOULD try that, but like I said, the links do not go anywhere.

I would like to find a small program that would stay open and run a search on everypage I view for the search term (heavy into genealogy) and IE8 EDIT, FIND ON THIS PAGE did stay with me when surfing [residing in the toolbar section.

JohnDo you still have the Windows XP computer?

I suggest you go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/worldwide-sites.aspx, download IE8 and try installing it.

Alternatively, download and install the Firefox browser. It leaves the Find box open when switching from one tab to another. Soybean,

I have the one computer, a Gateway laptop, but have 2 HDD: one with Vista Home Basic and one with WinXP Home Media Edition.

I have some problem with the WinXP. It was original to the laptop and developed some problems. I took it to a repair shop and they did some stuff that made some unusual results. Unhappy.

I ordered a recovery disk last week and hope it will be here Monday. I hope that puts me back on with XP. I need that for AutoCAD.

Now, about the browser. Thanks for the Firefox suggestion!! I am using it now and it does even more on the search than I was looking for in that it will highlight the term as well!! I think I will be very happy with the computer when it is restored to WinXP AND Firefox!!

Thanks again,
JohnDoing good!

Got the Gateway/WinXP restore disc from RESTOREDISKS.COM in Georgia and RETURNED my Gateway back to original, 2005, condition.

Then installed FireFox.

Happy Camper!

Solve : Cannot turn off pop up blocker?

Answer»

I recently reformatted my hard drive and since then I cannot turn off the pop up filter. But, my real problem is it also blocks access to links on e-mails and my address LIST. I NEED to press Ctrl to allow access to the e-mail links etc.. E-mail files and folders are not blocked. Links on a web site are not blocked only on e-mails. Could this be a Outlook Express problem? I am using IE 8 and XP O. S. Eddie B Eddie B, Welcome to the CH forums. Try this kate1968: At the top of your screen at the right you will see 'tools' with small arrow pointing down. Thanks truenorth, when I click on the turn off pop up's it reads pop up turned off. However, nothing changes. I still get pop up blocks on accessing e-mail links. What is the program you are using as the pop up blocker? truenorthIE's popup blocker has nothing to do with Outlook ExpressHere is a link pertaining to that in Outlook Express. Hopefully it can help you.

truenorthHere's the so called fix from the link truenorth put up.
Quote

Installing "service pack 2" has altered some of your email security settings.

Do This:
Open Outlook Express 6.0.
Click Tools, Options, Security tab.
Uncheck:
"Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus".
Uncheck:
"Block images and other external content in HTML email"
Click Apply
Click OK.
Now the interesting thing is that both the mentioned check boxes are ticked in my Outllook Express yet I can still click on links within emails which will open my browser and go to the site.
Even more interesting, the OP in the truenorth link said it fixed their problem.
I'm using OE & Firefox.I tried the recomendation open Outlook Epress and click on the security tab. Then uncheck the " Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened.............. " and "Block images and other external content in HTML email" apply & OK. Unfortunately it did not solve my problem. You should check to see if IE is the default browser.
IE>Tools>Internet Options>Programs. Thanks, I appreciate your comments FED moderator. I checked and I E is my default browser. Was there any particular event that you can associate with the onset of this problem? There may be a way to overcome this problem if it is associated with IE 8 and the associated version of outlook express. That is to install an older version of IE such as version 7. Here is a site for doing that http://www.oldversion.com/ . You could try that and see it's effect on the problem. You could then update that version back to IE 8 and see if it changes anything. Seems to me to be an arcane way to solve the problem. However GIVEN all you have tried unsuccessfully maybe arcane is in order. truenorthEUREKA!!! I don't know what the problem was but I found the cure. I reset IE configuration settings. In I E
I went into Internet Options, clicked the Advanced tab and then clicked Reset. In the I E default settings dialog box I clicked reset. I restarted Internet Explorer and that did the trick. I do not have to hold down the Ctrl key any longer to access a link and the links come up twice as fast now. I WOULD like to thank all you nice folks out there for your suggestions I learned a lot from you. Thanks Eddie B.Way to go--well done, truenorth

Solve : IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.080814-1233?

Answer»

I have been putting up with an ISSUE with the above program for a few months now and have learned to live with it.However in a desire to have the program work as it should i am seeking a solution to what is happening. Which is the following: I have a media news page as my home page.Whenever i desire to go to a link within the page i must right click on the link and select "open in a new window". Otherwise the page will never open and i get the usual window indicating could not connect and all the options contained therein. This phenomenon has only occurred within the past 2-3 months and only occurs on this one computer. Sony Vaio desktop O/S Xp pro sp2.I do not have Norton or Mcafee on this computer. I do not want the solution to be "install Firefox". I have had issues with Firefox in the past (particularly when used on the same computer that has a version of IE. on it). I do use Opera on another computer (which i am very satisfied with) but have no desire to put it on the Sony.I would much prefer to solve the IE problem.I have been tempted to upgrade IE 6 to IE 7 but have heard some adverse comments re IE 7. Suggestions please.truenorthWell, there isn't anything wrong with IE7, in my opinion.kpac, thanks for your comment--REASSURING --if i must go that route. However i am concerned that this particular issue will not necessarily be resolved by merely UPGRADING. I suspect that this issue has less to do with IE version and more to do with some conflict with IE and "something" else.Just a suspicion--no facts. If so then upgrading may not put me any further ahead. Unless there is a known problem with IE 6 that has been resolved in IE 7. I am not aware of any such problem though. truenorthWhy don't you try IE7, just to see, if the same problem exist?
You can always go BACK to IE6.Broni, OK when the oracles speak us mere mortals should listen.I'll give it a go.One big advantage will be that it will get Bill off my back trying to get me to upgrade everyday. I did not think that once upgraded one could go back.I know many programs will permit that but i felt that Microsoft would not let you. Will report when tested. Thanks guys, truenorthPreliminary results when using IE 7 indicate no change from previous concerns with IE 6. It is indeed a conundrum as as was the case with IE 6 the links that continue to cause the situation are in the same physical area of the web page. Whereas many of the other links such as to the TV guide and many other links do respond quickly and completely. However only by going to open in new window (new tab--a feature of IE 7 doesn't do it either) seems to RETURN a quick opening of the link. Ah well! truenorthSometimes you just wish that you had followed your best instincts.I am now starting to "enjoy" some of the features of IE 7 such as the lack of link ability to hotmail (something i used all the time). http://news.softpedia.com/news/Internet-Explorer-7-Kills-Outlook-Hotmail-Integration-38860.shtml I am sure there are other "surprises waiting in the weeds as well. I am going to go way out on a limb here and suggest an association which i suspect is at the basis of the problem i 1st identified.I suspect that it is something that was recently instituted by a microsoft update (don't know which one) that is interacting with my virus protection (in my case Avira free).Don't haul me in to court and try and prove it.However given my instincts re the upgrade to IE 7 and what has transpired i feel my gut feelings have some merit. Not very scientific i know.truenorth

Solve : Explorer 7 locks up computer?

Answer»

Hi,

I just loaded Explorer 7 and, when I try to launch it, the computer locks up. I'm forced to hard boot the machine because the normal ctrl/alt/del method doesn't work.

Now . . . if I RIGHT click the Explorer icon and open the browser "with add-ons disabled", a sterile-looking Explorer homepage comes up and I can surf the net. However, clips on YOUTUBE will no longer run and neither do .flv files on similar sites.

When I go to the Internet Options tab and re-enable the add-ons, the browser (and computer) lock up. Has anyone else experienced this problem? How can I FIX this? Should I uninstall Explorer 7 and reinstall 6? This is the only problem I have with my computer. It runs well except for this.

Windows XP
Thanks,

Solve : Working offline?

Answer»

This has been asked by someone else, but they had a different system

My computer keeps going offline. A box appears asking me to connect; if I click on "connect" it then tries to establish a dial up connection, but I have broadband (through BT). I have tried going to "Tools" and untick the "work offline" option which works about 50/50 of the TIME.

I don't know what causes this. I did however try using a dongle about 6 months AGO which never worked as I was in an area which had no 'phone coverage. I haven't tried using it SINCE coming home. This coincides with when I started having this problem.

I have a Packard Bell laptop with WINDOWS Vista. I USE internet explorer.

Cananyone help?Try here: http://windowsitpro.com/article/articleid/85414/jsi-tip-10256-windows-xp-unexpectedly-enables-the-internet-explorer-work-offline-option.html
