Try using this as your Google link https://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0 You're right Salmon it never STRUCK me that TC would be typing an address into the Google search bar, not something I've ever done.Thank you both, Salmon's advice works perfectly. Quote from: Fed on September 02, 2012, 04:06:33 PM You're right Salmon it never struck me that TC would be typing an address into the Google search bar, not something I've ever done. You'd be surprised how many people do this. Personally I remove the Google search bar. I know how to get to Google if I need to. i know someone who USED the address bar to type 'live serch' (with spelling error) and clicked on the result for live search homepage. when I asked him, he said he liked typing SEARCHES into the homepage better...
| 1903. | Solve : certain websites do not load!? |
| Answer» this just started happening to my computer recently... certain websites just do not WORK randomly, such as google, youtube, etc. when i say 'do not work' i mean that when i type in the address, site does not load. | 1904. | Solve : Internet Explorer can't load pages after trip to South Africa? |
| Answer» Hi, I think this problem is sufficiently different from others I've seen posted. I don't usually USE Internet Explorer (I use Firefox), but I think it's inability to load pages is interfering with downloading some free computer security downloads (Malwarebyte). At least reading up on those problems prompted me to check out my IE. I was in South Africa last month and as you can see, my "cache administrator" (I don't know what that is) is listed as South African. I tried to reset IE and still get the error. I can't load any pages. I'll post the error message and then my system info. Thanks very much. | |
| 1905. | Solve : PLEASE HELP (Internet Brower Connection)? |
| Answer» I am currently running Windows XP and have trouble connecting to the internet. About a month and a half AGO, my Firefox, AOL instant MESSENGER and skype lost the ability to connect to the internet but my internet explorer still works. Also, whatever virus I may have is also preventing me to connect to mcafee to run virus scans. What should I do?GO to the Computer Viruses and Spyware SECTION of the forum and follow the steps in the "read this first" thread. | |

| 1909. | Solve : Websites keep logging me out.? |
| Answer» Hello. I have a rather annoying problem that I could really use some help with. I was told it was a virus, but I doubt it because I'm not sure if multi-platform viruses even exist. Anyways, set my computer to start with last known good configuration and I ran Avast, AVG Antivirus, Malwarebytes, and 1 other anti-virus program and, even though they did find some stuff and removed it, the problem persists. That's enough for me. Go to the malware forum on this site and follow the instructions at the top of the page. Let's make sure there's nothing left. | |
| 1910. | Solve : Preventing loss of a posting? |
| Answer» With a view to devising a prevention strategy, I WONDER what miskeying, while I type a forum POST, would cause the browser (Firefox) to CLOSE ? It could be Alt/F4, a keyboard method of closing an active window of any program. Also ctrl + W or ctrl + shift + W, which close the tab or the window, respectively.Good evening Sebastian42 | |

| 1913. | Solve : How to get rid of Babylon homepage? |
| Answer» Dear Experts, | |
| 1914. | Solve : trouble when a new window is opened.? |
| Answer» Hello, I have an Acer laptop. This has been an annoying problem SINCE day one. It has Windows 7 and I am using the latest I.E. When I am on some websites and I click on a video link a new window will open. I can hear the video, but I cannot see it. All I have to do is minimize and then maximize the window and the video is there now. This also happens for instance when I see a picture of a baked item. When I click on it to get the ACTUAL recipe the new window will open. I cannot see the recipe nor can I scroll up or down the page, It seems frozen. Minimizing and maximizing the window cures all this. Any help would be much appreciated. Not that it will solve the IE issue but i suggest that you try another browser. My personal favorite is Opera. This will help to determine if your issue is with the IE browser or with the operating system. Minimizing and maximizing the window cures all this.Wonder if its the webpage not yet fully loaded or is still loading?Thank you for all of your help. I INSTALLED Firefox and the problem is gone. I feel silly for not thinking of that myself since I have Firefox on my desktop. Thanks again. Well, it's a work-around but not a solution. Regardless, I switched to Firefox a couple of years ago and have been 100% delighted since. If you value the use of IE you may wish to GO back to an earlier version and see if that gets rid of the problem. Also removing all the add ons in the current version may get it to work right and then you can add back add-ons as you desire until you find one that was causing your issue. http://www.oldversion.com/ truenorth | |
| 1915. | Solve : Facebook: Cookies are not enabled on your browser? |
| Answer» I've been working on the subject problem for more hours than I care to share. However, it's still not working. In addition, if I think I've solved the problem and try and log in to FB it will than GIVE me a messsage that javascript is not enabled on my browser. I don't understand any of this...I was able to log on and off yesterday without any "messages". I did delete temporary cookies, however, I don't see how that would have any effect. Anyway, please help, I would like to use FB. Sylvie , try a system restore to a restore point before the problem started. If you're on IE 8, try tweaking the Advanced Privacy Settings in Tools.Internet Options. Click the Privacy tab, then select the Advanced button. I've set mine to accept all First Party cookies, and prompt for all third party cookies. Click OK/Apply. Just to be sure, when you return to IE, dump your history and all related cookies/temporary internet files. You can even hit F5 after entering the facebook address to make sure your browser loads a fresh version of the page. Note that all of the apps on Facebook (almost all?) use third party cookies, so you may be clicking allow/block on the resulting dialogs for awhile until you've hit everything HOSTED by Facebook. BTW I got no response whatsoever from contacting Facebook outside of their automatic "thanks but no thanks" response. Good luck.Quote from: Dari on November 30, 2009, 10:39:53 PM If you're on IE 8, try tweaking the Advanced Privacy Settings in Tools.Internet Options. Click the Privacy tab, then select the Advanced button. I've set mine to accept all First Party cookies, and prompt for all third party cookies. Click OK/Apply.This has been solved already. Besides, it's about 2 months old. Quote BTW I got no response whatsoever from contacting Facebook outside of their automatic "thanks but no thanks" response.Well they do get thousands of emails a week.I got a solution. Press "start" (if u're on Vista) Type "run" then press enter. (if u're on XP) just click on "run". Type "regedit" and press "Enter" Navigate till you get to Domain in : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains Right click on Domains, and delete the whole folder. Problem solved! Only problem is, all your other restricted sites will now be gone from the restriction list. If you're using SpyBot, just open SpyBot and re-immunize, and they'll all come back. If you've added them manually and deleted the Domains folder before reading THIS, then u "went to New York". You'll have to add them manually, so if SpyBot didn't create that restriction list, u'll have to re-add them manually from the IE's Tools > Internet Options > Security > Restricted Sites (select it, then click on "Sites" right below it) then add whatever u want to add. Good luck!1) The problem was already resolved 2) This thread is from AugustThat's the problem... it wasn't resolved! See, i since i had that problem, and i'd already tried all the suggested solutions (ABT allowing cookies, bla bla bla) and it still wasn't working because Facebook had entered into the restricted section, PLUS Facebook was HIDDEN from the list in the restricted sites section (couldn't remove it from the list even if i wanted to) so i had to do what my solution said to do. if u google other forums' threads, they all suggest the same thing: change the privacy settings to let IE use cookies. But in most if not all cases, the people who were experiencing this problem already had their cookies enabled and the problem was/is with just Facebook. I know the thread is 3 months old and it did WARN me before i posted my reply, but since 3 months later i had problems with that cookie issue, then so do/will/have others. Why not have a solution ready for them? They can try the "allow cookies" thing, and if that solves the problem for them, then good. If not, then there's no other ways to solve the problem other than the one i just posted. -- none that i know of at least.Quote from: Ghoymakh on January 02, 2010, 03:45:35 PM I got a solution. Or you SOLVE the problem by using the IE interface... (for IE9) Go to Tools > Options > Privacy > Websites > check the list of websites.. probably Facebook is in this list with 'always block' Select the site and click remove. This Years nominee for the thread that won't die... | |

| 1919. | Solve : Need to enlarge Firefox email window screen? |
| Answer» I have a new Windows Vista Home Premium Edition OS and have been using the Mozilla Firefox browser for my emails. But lately my space is so limited where I'm typing that I can't even SEE what I'm writing. I know I've typed some other stuff, but I can't see it. I can't even see below this line I'm typing now. There are ads that actually seem to be crowding in from the right side of the screen! Is there any way I can enlarge the window or screen size so that I can view a larger working space? Any SUGGESTIONS would be very welcome. | |

| 1922. | Solve : Firefox is working but IE will not load? |
| Answer» My computer has had some issues lately and one of the techs that my employer uses installed Symantec anti-virus which seems to have fixed the previous problems. Now however I cannot access internet explorer. I use internet explorer to access my grade book through edline because firefox will not allow it. When I try to pull up IE the page comes up but stays blank. I read on here that I can do something through the tool bar on IE but I can't even access that. I also found a thread that said to reset the win-soc through the cmd (or something like that) but that didn't help either. Firefox is working fine THOUGH and I am on it right now. my husband had the exact same PROBLEM after we downloaded 3.6 version firefox... then about few hours... the IE7 does not work as i have to use that browser for work as well. I am assuming it is a new virus going on around because, my husbands gmail account would not recognize his password.. so .. and now my desktop computer is infected as well.. i have tried everything few times.. and its still a problem on my computer.. so YEA.. I'm pretty sure.. things will get fixed... asap. Download and install IE8 and see if that resolves the problem (unless, of course, you're running Windows 7 which already has IE8)...can't.... i use ie7 for my work vpn .. Janalynne: My response was for 01tj. Download and install IE8 and see if that resolves the problem (unless, of course, you're running Windows 7 which already has IE8)... I'm not sure if I have win7 or not but I think I updated it recently. Should I go through add/remove and completely wipe out IE then download it through firefox? If your "Start" button at the lower-left HAND corner is a blue Windows logo, then you have either Windows Vista or Windows 7. If not, you have Windows XP (unless your computer is older than 8 or 9 years old). If your "Show Desktop" button is in the lower-right hand corner instead of the lower-left, you have Windows 7. If you click "Start" and you have a "Search for programs and files" bar, you have Vista or 7. Type winver in that search box and press Enter. That'll tell you for sure which version of Windows you're running. You can download IE8 via Firefox. You don't even have to wipe it out through "Add/Remove Programs" (XP) or "Programs and Features" (Vista*). *: Although 7 has "Programs and Features," that's irrelevant for our purposes, as it has IE8 by default.Quote from: Janalynne on February 23, 2010, 03:18:46 PM can't.... i use ie7 for my work vpn .. Why would IE8 not run on a VPN ? ?because my company i work for has not updated their software to bump up to be able to work on IE8....so ... it won't load on ie8 or crome or firefox at all .. only on IE7 and i found out about the abode flash update... and mine was corrupted.. at the moment i have the uninstall version of the flash player blocked becuase it repeated with different number au, then bu, then cu after everytime i block it..it adds ANOTHER letter charcter because it kept asking me to install when i wanted to uninstall and so right now i seem can't get rid of that flash player for the moment.Just downloaded IE8, still no IE Could Symantec or AVG be blocking it? The page comes up but nothing happens and I can't do anything with itQuote from: Janalynne on February 24, 2010, 02:08:15 PM because my company i work for has not updated their software to bump up to be able to work on IE8....so ... it won't load on ie8 or crome or firefox at all .. only on IE7That makes no sense to me. If it works on IE7 it should work on IE8. Have you tried? If this is a company PC, you're better off letting your IT department handle that. Some IT departments are quite strict about what software you can and cannot install. If this is a personal machine, just install IE8, test, and if it fails, uninstall it and you'll be back to IE7.All i was suggesting is any Co. website/portal if written properly for IE7 should not only show up fine but work under IE8...VPN or not... | |

| 1927. | Solve : Browsing problem? |
| Answer» The following relates to a problem that I have had for 3 weeks now. I have posted on a couple of other sites and searched everything that I could think of without finding a solution. Before I go mad from watching adverts can anyone please help? Dude Pls Make That Note Short Sorry about that, tried not to leave anything out. Basically the only way I can access websites is using IE7 without add-ons. Try any other way and the PC locks. All other internet access is working. All browsers work offline. That's the shortened version, most answers to questions about what I've tried to solve it are answered in my first post.918, please take no notice of the_mad_joker. It's better the more the information you give. So, you have tried different browsers? Have you tried resetting IE?Hi kpac, thank you for your reply. Quote 918, please take no notice of the_mad_joker. It's better the more the information you give. My thoughts exactly. Quote So, you have tried different browsers? As I said in my first post, when this started it was affecting all the browsers that are installed on both computers. In the last couple of days I tried updating Firefox3 on the PC to 3.0.18 which has just come out but the problem remains. Quote Have you tried resetting IE? Until an hour ago when I saw your post the answer was no. Since then I have tried the reset manually and using the 'Fix It' both of which failed, thinking about it since this might be due to other software which is installed in IE7. I then uninstalled IE7 and reverted to IE6 which had the same problem. I have now returned everything to as it was. As far as IE itself is concerned I have the same version, the same add-ons, and the same settings on both computers, one works the other doesn't, even over the same connection (ICS)? I am not a computer expert otherwise I would probably not be looking for help but I do have a couple of thoughts on what is happening and would appreciate opinions from people with more understanding: The problem only affects the ability of browsers to connect to websites. It does not prevent them working offline. It is not specific to any single browser, it affects all of them. As all other software is able to connect it does not as such seem to be a general connection problem. As ICS works it would seem to be a problem with the PC rather than the actual connection. My first question is: What is it that takes place between the browsers and the internet that does not apply to other software and the internet? In my research I have come across 3 things which I only understand up to a point: TCP/IP: I know enough about this to be able to reset it which, as far as I can make out, should have resolved any problems in that area? DNS: With the exception of the network between the 2 computers this appears to be set to automatic on everything else? DCHP: This I do not understand? Given my limited knowledge, to me everything points to one or more incorrect settings but I have no idea where!Have you CONTACTED your ISP and have them run a Line check on that ADSL modem ? ? Is there a router in this equation ? ? Can you recall anything that has changed i.e. new soft/hardware ? ?Hi patio thank you for your reply. Quote Have you contacted your ISP and have them run a Line check on that ADSL modem ? ? I have contacted my ISP twice, they have run a Line check and they have also been through the settings I have, as far as they are concerned the problem is with the PC. Two weeks before this problem started they got me to reset the adapter, it was working at the time but they have moved to a new system and wanted it to be reset. After the problem started I contacted them the first time to see if it was the change that was causing the problem, they said no. The SECOND time was about a week later when I got them to go through their various settings with me all of which were correct, although they were certain it was not a Line problem they checked it and said they could detect no faults. They added that if it had been a Line fault I would probably be having connection problems with other things beside browsers, which I am not. Quote Is there a router in this equation ? ? As such no. I have a router which I normally only use if I am running my Netbook on its own. (There are a number of practical reasons for this.) I have never had a problem with the modem but just to be sure I did try using the router instead of the modem and the problem stayed the same, in fact everything stayed the same including the connection speed. Quote Can you recall anything that has changed i.e. new soft/hardware ? ? I have not changed any hardware for over a year. With regard to software, I keep all the installation files I download on a second internal hard drive until I stop using them or they are updated. Putting them in order of Date Created, there were no new programs installed for the 10 days before the problem started, and no programs were updated in the 3 days before the problem started. The last updates that are directly connected to the browsers were Silverlight and Shockwave both on the same day 2 weeks before the problem started. The only other thing that might have updated are Firefox extensions but I could not think of any at the time that had and I would not have expected that to have affected IE, or as it did at the beginning, Opera on the Netbook. I have been known to make registry tweaks when I come across them from time to time but again not within the last few months. As I said in my first post this problem turned up quite literally overnight. When I turned the PC off everything was working, when I turned it on the next day I had this problem and not the faintest idea why. (It occurred to me after I had written this that my security programs are updated daily but they are all common programs and in use on both my computers. In any event I am not aware of anyone having problems with them.)This is a very brief post to say that I have my browsers back. I'll post again tomorrow.Good to hear...sorry we couldn't assist on this end...Quote from: 918 on February 22, 2010, 06:06:06 AM In the last couple of days I tried updating Firefox3 on the PC to 3.0.18 which has just come out but the problem remains. Actually, Firefox 3.6 is the latest version.Quote Actually, Firefox 3.6 is the latest version. In general terms yes, but it is not the latest version of v3. I installed v3.5 on my Netbook and lost a few extensions, if I go to v3.6 the last time I looked I would have lost another 25. I found the cause of the problem purely by chance. I have been thinking of changing some of my security programs for a while now and just recently I got hold of some free/discounted licenses for different programs. Because it was always the last program to load, long after everything else, I decided that one thing that had to go was Ad-Aware. The last couple of program updates did not install first time round, something that had not happened before, and it never found anything anyway. Even though I used Revo Uninstaller in Advance mode when I ran a search with RegSeeker I found over 200 entries and what caught my eye was that a large number of them contained the word 'internet'! I deleted all of them. As soon as I rebooted I noticed that everything loaded faster and I also noticed that my internet connection was 300kbps higher than it has ever been. I tried Firefox2 and for the first time in over 3 weeks it opened my Home Page. Tried the other browsers and they worked as well. I have since found that removing Ad-Aware has also sorted a few other things out: My graphics card software had refused to update for the last 3 months, it now has. A painting program which I downloaded to try about a month ago would never open, now it does. Several unrelated error messages I KEPT getting in the Event Viewer have stopped. I find it hard to believe that one program could affect so many different things without there being some indication that it was doing it but I cannot see any alternative. Thank you to those who took an interest in this especially those who replied. It will be interesting to see if there are any other people having problems with Ad-Aware. I forgot to add that Ad-Aware is also Installed on my Netbook, but not for much longer! | |
| 1928. | Solve : How do I change version of Acrobat used to access PDFs using Chrome?? |
| Answer» The problem: I have (and need) Acrobat Writer 5.1, but also Acrobat Reader 8 as 5.1 is too old to open many PDF files. I recently had to reinstall Acrobat Writer 5.1, which then meant the computer has been using it as a default to (try to) open PDF files. I have reset Reader 8 as the default program for the .pdf extension via Windows EXPLORER, but this seems to have no effect on either IE or Chrome (which is my primary BROWSER). I read in the FAQ about using "Save As", but the page I am desperately trying to access (a secure online ticket) tries to AUTOMATICALLY open without any save as option. | |

This. Also, you may want to upgrade to IE8 as well (unless there are business or compatibility reasons not to).Soybean... That solved the problem! I thought I had it already downloaded. Flash is SUPER! Happy that you and this help site are available for us senior citizens. ========= killerb255... Thanks for the suggestion. Appreciate it... Pilgrim Yes, Flash is used a lot nowadays and you miss a lot of content on the web without it. Another browser plug-in you might need to install sometime is Microsoft's Silverlight. LIKE Flash, Silverlight is used by some websites for streaming media, i.e. video on the web page. Silverlight is a fairly recent product from Microsoft and isn't nearly as common yet as Flash. Whether it will take some market share away from Adobe's Flash is something that probably won't become evident for quite some time yet. Silverlight is being used on http://www.nbcolympics.com/ for video clips from the Olympics.

| Answer» Ok, I don't know if this is in the right forum, so I'm sorry if it isn't... but anyways, lately I've had a lot of trouble with Hotmail. I can't go to the Hotmail website directly (by typing in the ADDRESS), but I can access my account through MSN Messenger. However, once I get there, if I click on something, nothing happens. I recently performed some "spyware" clean-up using CW-Shredder, Ad-aware, and Spybot, so I don't know if I messed something up or accidentally deleted something, but I would really appreciate it if someone colud GIVE me some ideas on what to do. Thank you so much!Steph.....I run Ad-Aware and SpyBot all the time so I dont think they would have caused to problem .... | |

| 1937. | Solve : Firefox & AOL problems? |
| Answer» SEVERAL weeks ago I finally download Firefox and started using it. Their TROUBLESHOOTING and directions were just great so I didn't have much of a problem transitioning from IE...............until 2 days ago when I tried to retrieve my email from AOL and it wouldn't WORK. I could go into any other part of AOL that I usually use but not the email. It would ask for my user name and password and after typing them in it would tell me that I had mail, however, the mail wouldn't load. Everything works just fine when I switch to IE. Firefox apparently has this problem with AOL email so that it had some fixes that I tried: un-installing Adobe Flash Player and then reinstalling it and clearing out all cookies. Other than those 2 suggestions there was nothing else they recommended. Has ANYONE else had this problem and what did you do to rectify it in addition to Firefox's suggestions? ThanksFYI for anyone else with this problem: Problem SOLVED! I downloaded the newest Firefox 5.6 and was able to bring up my email in AOL. Quote from: 02bin3 on February 18, 2010, 07:46:22 AM I downloaded the newest Firefox 5.6Ahh yes, the H.G. Wells approach to problem solving. | |

| 1943. | Solve : Always get Security codes and images wrong even when typed correctly? |
| Answer» okay so in these websites .. they give me a security code or image to copy .. i copy it exactly the same but nothing happens .. i asked my friend to log on for me on that website and he did it without any problems .. The letters are case-sensitive so Capital and small letters are sometimes used....Actually, usually not. But sometimes, yes they are case sensitive. Usually all CAPS are accepted. Some of the letters and numbers can be hard to read clearly but most sites have a button to issue a new code. Sometimes the new code is easier to read. Some sites scramble the letters and numbers a little too much. Most captcha programs have an audible version. Listen to that and type in what it says.but guys I even get the most simple ones wrong(though i typed it correctly) ... Its exactly the same but the websites says im wrong >< Quote from: goergemiguel on February 09, 2010, 06:21:17 PM but guys I even get the most simple ones wrong(though i typed it correctly) ... Its exactly the same but the websites says im wrong ><What web browser are you using? If you are using Firefox, try getting this addon. https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/966/ It's an addon called "Tamper Data". When you're about to submit the information for registering, click Tools > Tamper Data > Start Tamper. Then click the submit button. It will bring up a message. You may have (quite) a bit to look through, but eventually you should find the captcha code. If that ISN'T what you entered, something is interfering with your browser somehow. that is what i keep getting ... no matter what i do .. and I dont really get how to use tamper data >< LOOKS like you correctly typed in the code. After typing it in, do you click on LogIn button? Maybe try something else... [Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]Clear out your Temporary INTERNET Files..re-boot and try again... Using any cookie addons ? ? Keyboard SETTINGS ? ? Just throwin things out there. | |

| 1948. | Solve : Internet Broswer Failure - Please Help!? |
| Answer» I am having problems with getting an internet browser to work on my desktop (writing this from my LAPTOP). It is a Dell using Wondows XP. I was running IE8 and now when I TRY to open it, it says it is connecting, but the screen is white and nothing ever comes up now. I tried downloading Firefox to my laptop, putting the install file on a flash drive, and putting it on my desktop. I installed it and it won't even open when I double click on the icon. I go to the task manager and Firefox isn't listed as something that is running, it isn't listed at all. Some things worth noting:
If ANYONE can please help me, I would be beyond grateful. Thanks ahead of time.Go to START > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt Type in (Without quotes) "ping www.google.com" What is displayed after? In spite of our malware scans I'd suggest going to the malware section of this forum and following the instructions in the announcement at the top of that page.
