Solve : Comment sections have disappeared across loads of websites..?

Answer»

Hi. For some reason about 2 weeks ago comment section on various website wont appear for me. Even when i use a different browser. I always use chrome but the same thing happens on IE. I thought perhaps the introduction of the new cookie laws in the uk might have somethign to do with it but i dont know to be honest. I googled it but no-one else seems to have the problem. Any IDEAS??

Do you have any ad blocking software installed? Ad block Plus will sometimes block the comment sections on websites. Ghostery will almost always block them as well as other things like Facebook and Twitter buttons. No ad-blocking software that im aware of. I have bullguard but i have had that for 3 years and havent changed the settings once. Good evening Richie and welcome to CH

You may have 3 possible issues.

The java temp / jar file may be corrupt and this can be fixed very easy. Every OS is a little different but Locate the Java Icon in the control panel when that is open look towards the bottom for "temp internet files" click on the "setting button" then in the next box take the check mark out of the top left "keep temporary files on my computer" then click "delete files" then after it is done put the check mark back in and close that box. ALSO while you are in the java applet click on the "update tab" and tell it to update.

Next to try go to adobe.com and update your "flash player" and the "shockwave player" but the pain to this is you have to update all browsers (IE and FF etc) by going to adobe.com and doing the "flash player" and the "shockwave player" on each different browser plus when you are the adobe site to do the updates just take the check mark out for McAfee or what ever they are pushing at this time .

If this does not work try running any of your browsers in safe mode (not windows safe mode the browsers safe mode). Doing this will disable all add-on / extensions to SEE if your issue is GONE. More than likely it is one of the above items.

Then when you are done the 3 above items restart your browsers and you should be good, Please let us know how you make out. Mike

You'd be surprised how many people do this. Personally I remove the Google search bar. I know how to get to Google if I need to.
i know someone who USED the address bar to type 'live serch' (with spelling error) and clicked on the result for live search homepage. when I asked him, he said he liked typing SEARCHES into the homepage better...

Solve : Internet Explorer can't load pages after trip to South Africa?

Answer»

Hi, I think this problem is sufficiently different from others I've seen posted. I don't usually USE Internet Explorer (I use Firefox), but I think it's inability to load pages is interfering with downloading some free computer security downloads (Malwarebyte). At least reading up on those problems prompted me to check out my IE. I was in South Africa last month and as you can see, my "cache administrator" (I don't know what that is) is listed as South African. I tried to reset IE and still get the error. I can't load any pages. I'll post the error message and then my system info. Thanks very much.

Thanks.More information--I think what I need to know is how to change the cache administrator or to change settings that were made by a cache administrator. I checked "sun.ac.za" and it is the web address for the university where I was working, so this seems pretty harmless. I went online through their wireless network (used Firefox without problem). But now that I'm back in the U.S., some setting have been changed that prevent me from using Internet Explorer. I didn't try to use it when I was there. Thanks again! My guess is that you may have been infected...what protection apps do you have on that machine ? ?
DLoad all updates for them and run your scans.
Report back (hopefully with a clean bill of Health)Thanks for the reply. I regularly run Adaware and Spybot S&D and have rerun those. With the continued problems and research online, I DECIDED to DOWNLOADED AVG Anti-virus and Malwarebytes today and ran them. (My computer has been pretty slow anyway, so I really wanted to be sure I was digging out any spyware.) I'm still having the Explorer problem.

I went AHEAD and emailed the system administrator once I realized it CORRESPONDED to the university I visited. It seems like some security settings were changed on my computer when I was there visiting. I can't access the Apple iTunes store, which online reading tells me may be related to security settings too.AdAware and Spybot are old school - and neither is an anti virus utility. The current best of breed anti spyware utilities are MalwareBytes and Super AntiSpyware - but again, they are not anti virus utilities. You do have a resident AV, correct? And go ahead and run a scan with MalwareBytes. Thanks for the tip about Super AntiSpyware. Um, no, I do not have resident AV. Whenever I've installed something, my computer comes to a screeching halt. Any recommendations?

In the meantime, I have figured out my original problem and thought I should report back. The iTunes store and Internet Explorer problems were related since iTunes uses IE proxy settings to access the store. In Internet Options, connections, LAN settings, I had "use automatic configuration script" checked off and that had the South African address. So, I unchecked that and now IE and the iTunes store both work.

Back to work on protecting and speeding up my computer...

Thanks for the help!I don't think anyone should run a system without a GOOD an utility resident. There are many good ones - my suggestion is you pick one, install it, and make sure it's always active.

Solve : make firefox much faster?

Answer»

fire fox trick::
1. Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll
down and look for the following entries:
network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time.
When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really
speeds up page loading.
2. Alter the entries as follows:
Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number LIKE 30. This
means it will make 30 requests at once.
3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer.
Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0".
This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it
recieves.
If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages 2-30 times faster now. type "about:config" in adress bar were u type "www.google.com" etc and follow the steps mentioned
it works only in firefox1) It's not a trick
2) I don't care what kind of connection you're on, you will not load pages 30 times faster - ESPECIALLY broadband

if its not a trick then pls tell me that what it actually does..?ANYBODY can google and post. If you don't know what it does you shouldn't post it. ohhk sir,
but recently i saw the topic firefox 3.6 and its all the same post which i have given here and i think it should work changing advanced configuration options on the lick and a promise that they will actually make things "FASTOR" is how people get introduced to such things as "I'm constantly getting page not found plz help!".

They make them ADVANCED options for a reason.

This is no better then the registry tweaks that "add windows Vista/7 features to XP" by adding registry keys that apparently "enable" the new feature that never existed to begin with. I got a good laugh when I saw a "tip" on how to enable DWM with XP. It was as simple as adding a "EnableDWM" somewhere! If only somebody had told Microsoft, they could have saved their time developing the first version for Vista.how's this fire fox trick (in aditya_aditya2004's post) compare to using speedyfox tool?.

Patio has recommended using speedyfox to speed up firefox in a previous post.... Quote from: ALLAN on June 02, 2010, 03:40:03 PM

Solve : Firefox 15 is out?

Answer»

Supposed to fix memory LEAKS caused by badly written or greedy addons. If you're on the RELEASE update channel, you've probably got it - anyhow:

Win, Mac & Linux:

http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html

Updates are even more silent than before, but (as always) you can disable automatic updates the same WAY as in PREVIOUS versions of Firefox. Go to the options dialog, Advanced, Update, and then adjust the SETTINGS as desired.

Solve : Websites keep logging me out.?

Answer»

Hello. I have a rather annoying problem that I could really use some help with.

So, my MAIN computer(using a laptop right now) is having troubles on some websites. On Facebook and forums(MAYBE other sites I haven't DISCOVERED yet) it logs me out every time I change a page. This makes it impossible to do anything on those websites.

Yahoo Answers doesn't seem to do this, though. It works fine there.

And, strangely, this is also happening on my iTouch.

I was told it was a virus, but I doubt it because I'm not sure if multi-platform viruses even exist. Anyways, set my computer to start with last known good CONFIGURATION and I ran Avast, AVG Antivirus, Malwarebytes, and 1 other anti-virus program and, even though they did find some stuff and removed it, the problem persists.
All scans were thorough through every file on the computer, and I even scanned twice with each program. The second scans showed absolutely nothing on my computer.

So, could anybody please help me? It would be very much appreciated.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that this happens in Google Chrome and Internet Explorer.
Also, now my iTouch will not play Youtube videos, if that has anything to do with this problem.

Solve : Preventing loss of a posting?

Answer»

With a view to devising a prevention strategy, I WONDER what miskeying, while I type a forum POST, would cause the browser (Firefox) to CLOSE ? It could be Alt/F4, a keyboard method of closing an active window of any program. Also ctrl + W or ctrl + shift + W, which close the tab or the window, respectively.Good evening Sebastian42

just in case you come back and LOOK at this post or maybe some else may find it handy. This is a list from MS that covers many KB short cuts. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/126449

Enjoy, Mike Forgot about this when I first posted, but there is an addon called Lazarus that automatically saves information you type into a form. I believe that it can be used after accidental browser close, and I'm almost certain that it WORKS after accidental tab close or refresh.

Solve : Refreshing only one tab only automatically with out hitting F5 in IE or Firefox?

Answer»

Good morning folks

Here are my specs
PC is Dell Inspiron 1525 running AMD dual core / 4 gigs ram / 320 gig HD & Windows 7 HOME Premium (factory OS was Vista) with SP1 and browsers IE8 and Firefox 12

This is what I want to do.

I want to have one (1) tab refresh say every 20 sec's or so. So lets say I have 8 tabs open but I only want to have 1 tab refresh is it possible. If this can't be done in IE8 that will not be a deal beaker but I really would love to have this option in FF12 (my primary browser)

I know I can change the cashe size to 0 so when I go back one web page and then go forward again it will refresh the web page. I also know by hitting F5 can refresh the tab.

I have found FF add-ons that can do this but it does the refresh for ALL tabs not just the one tab I want.

Does anyone know how do this for either IE8 or in FF please let me know or if someone needs me to explain it further.

Thanks in advance, Mike

Both TAB UTILITIES and TAB MIX PLUS will allow you to add "Refresh Tab Every...." to the context menu in Firefox. Tab Utilities will retain the setting even after FF is closed and restarted. Tab Mix Plus will have to be set every TIME you load FF.Good morning Allan

That is what I was looking for but for some reason it would not work for me. I think it would not work because of some of my other add-ons that currently use but I did find another one that worked really well it was "ReloadEvery"

ReloadEvery is short and very easy to use. It does not do anything but refreshing the tab(s) you can enable it by right clicking on the web page and checking it and when you enable again your reload time setting is still there. And if wanted all tabs can be refreshed too.

I found this by changing the words that I had searched with in Google with thanks to you. As soon as I did a search for tab utilities issues some others had suggested reloadready.

Thanks again, Mike

Your self and others may like this one too. I would open a browser session with the site you want refreshed and use whatever addon that works...Then open another instabce of the browser to do whatever else you are doing...

Just a thought.Good evening patio

Thank you for the input I have done that when needed but some times I just wanted just one tab to refresh to keep an eye on it. A good example would be like if I am at ebay and I am watching a PRODUCT and it is getting close to the end so I can win it

Thanks a bunch for all the input. With my add-on's the "ReloadEvery" https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/reloadevery/works great, simple interface and it just works as it should. Mike

Solve : trouble when a new window is opened.?

Answer»

Hello, I have an Acer laptop. This has been an annoying problem SINCE day one. It has Windows 7 and I am using the latest I.E. When I am on some websites and I click on a video link a new window will open. I can hear the video, but I cannot see it. All I have to do is minimize and then maximize the window and the video is there now. This also happens for instance when I see a picture of a baked item. When I click on it to get the ACTUAL recipe the new window will open. I cannot see the recipe nor can I scroll up or down the page, It seems frozen. Minimizing and maximizing the window cures all this. Any help would be much appreciated. Not that it will solve the IE issue but i suggest that you try another browser. My personal favorite is Opera. This will help to determine if your issue is with the IE browser or with the operating system.
http://www.opera.com/
let us know the result when you can.truenorthI agree you might want to try a different browser such as Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Safari, etc.

But please forgive a silly question (I'm sorry, we never know the level of knowledge of folks with whom we are speaking) - When you SAY a new "Window" opens do you mean a second instance of IE or a new tab? If it's actually a new Window you should change the options to open a new tab rather than a new window when you click on a link.Quote

Minimizing and maximizing the window cures all this.
Wonder if its the webpage not yet fully loaded or is still loading?Thank you for all of your help. I INSTALLED Firefox and the problem is gone. I feel silly for not thinking of that myself since I have Firefox on my desktop. Thanks again. Well, it's a work-around but not a solution. Regardless, I switched to Firefox a couple of years ago and have been 100% delighted since. If you value the use of IE you may wish to GO back to an earlier version and see if that gets rid of the problem. Also removing all the add ons in the current version may get it to work right and then you can add back add-ons as you desire until you find one that was causing your issue.

If you're on IE 8, try tweaking the Advanced Privacy Settings in Tools.Internet Options. Click the Privacy tab, then select the Advanced button. I've set mine to accept all First Party cookies, and prompt for all third party cookies. Click OK/Apply.

Just to be sure, when you return to IE, dump your history and all related cookies/temporary internet files. You can even hit F5 after entering the facebook address to make sure your browser loads a fresh version of the page.

Note that all of the apps on Facebook (almost all?) use third party cookies, so you may be clicking allow/block on the resulting dialogs for awhile until you've hit everything HOSTED by Facebook.

BTW I got no response whatsoever from contacting Facebook outside of their automatic "thanks but no thanks" response.

Good luck.Quote from: Dari on November 30, 2009, 10:39:53 PM

Only problem is, all your other restricted sites will now be gone from the restriction list. If you're using SpyBot, just open SpyBot and re-immunize, and they'll all come back. If you've added them manually and deleted the Domains folder before reading THIS, then u "went to New York". You'll have to add them manually, so if SpyBot didn't create that restriction list, u'll have to re-add them manually from the IE's Tools > Internet Options > Security > Restricted Sites (select it, then click on "Sites" right below it) then add whatever u want to add.

Good luck!1) The problem was already resolved
2) This thread is from AugustThat's the problem... it wasn't resolved!

See, i since i had that problem, and i'd already tried all the suggested solutions (ABT allowing cookies, bla bla bla) and it still wasn't working because Facebook had entered into the restricted section, PLUS Facebook was HIDDEN from the list in the restricted sites section (couldn't remove it from the list even if i wanted to)

so i had to do what my solution said to do.

if u google other forums' threads, they all suggest the same thing: change the privacy settings to let IE use cookies. But in most if not all cases, the people who were experiencing this problem already had their cookies enabled and the problem was/is with just Facebook.

I know the thread is 3 months old and it did WARN me before i posted my reply, but since 3 months later i had problems with that cookie issue, then so do/will/have others. Why not have a solution ready for them?

They can try the "allow cookies" thing, and if that solves the problem for them, then good.
If not, then there's no other ways to solve the problem other than the one i just posted. -- none that i know of at least.Quote from: Ghoymakh on January 02, 2010, 03:45:35 PM
I got a solution.

Press "start"
(if u're on Vista) Type "run" then press enter.
(if u're on XP) just click on "run".
Type "regedit" and press "Enter"
Navigate till you get to Domain in :

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains

Right click on Domains, and delete the whole folder.

Problem solved!

Or you SOLVE the problem by using the IE interface...

(for IE9) Go to Tools > Options > Privacy > Websites > check the list of websites.. probably Facebook is in this list with 'always block'
Select the site and click remove. This Years nominee for the thread that won't die...

Solve : internet explorer....jumps back to the previous web page on own?

Answer»

HELP!!! This is so very frustrating! When I am on-line, my computer will suddenly and with no warning jump back to the PREVIOUS web page or reload a page without being told to. This causes me to lose so much stuff and is just PLAIN frustrating.

I have Windows XP and Internet Explorer 8.I'd suggest running a full scan with BOTH your AV and MalwareBytes. Let us know the results. My toshiba laptop has the keyboard layout so that the alt and the left arrow key are right next to each other. If you happen to hit both at the same time in IE Alt+left will take you back to the previous page. Not sure if that has ANYTHING to do with your PROBLEM, just thought I'd throw it out there so you don't start chasing a ghost.Try ANOTHER keyboard...

I have a new Windows Vista Home Premium Edition OS and have been using the Mozilla Firefox browser for my emails. But lately my space is so limited where I'm typing that I can't even SEE what I'm writing. I know I've typed some other stuff, but I can't see it. I can't even see below this line I'm typing now. There are ads that actually seem to be crowding in from the right side of the screen! Is there any way I can enlarge the window or screen size so that I can view a larger working space? No I haven't as yet but will do.

I suspect there is an issue there because I "think" the Ip address I should be getting on the laptop should be 192.168.1.2 wheras it is 192.168.1.3

So I'll RESET the modem following your instructions.

No, that wouldn't make a difference. Many people's IP addresses change every time they connect to the web. That just Quote from: roy66 on January 08, 2010, 05:11:11 PM

That last number may change BASED on how many computers on your router are online at any given time - the router is assigning that last number. If you used static IP addresses then the computer would always have the same last number. Thanks very much for that informative overview it has helped me to understand that my ASSUMPTIONS were incorrect.

Solve : Firefox is working but IE will not load?

Answer»

My computer has had some issues lately and one of the techs that my employer uses installed Symantec anti-virus which seems to have fixed the previous problems. Now however I cannot access internet explorer. I use internet explorer to access my grade book through edline because firefox will not allow it. When I try to pull up IE the page comes up but stays blank. I read on here that I can do something through the tool bar on IE but I can't even access that. I also found a thread that said to reset the win-soc through the cmd (or something like that) but that didn't help either. Firefox is working fine THOUGH and I am on it right now. my husband had the exact same PROBLEM after we downloaded 3.6 version firefox... then about few hours... the IE7 does not work as i have to use that browser for work as well. I am assuming it is a new virus going on around because, my husbands gmail account would not recognize his password.. so .. and now my desktop computer is infected as well.. i have tried everything few times.. and its still a problem on my computer.. so YEA.. I'm pretty sure.. things will get fixed... asap. Download and install IE8 and see if that resolves the problem (unless, of course, you're running Windows 7 which already has IE8)...can't.... i use ie7 for my work vpn .. Janalynne: My response was for 01tj.

You'll need to start a new topic for two reasons:

1) It's easier to address one person's problem per topic. Even though your problem is similar, it may not necessarily have the same solution (and, of course, IE8 is not an option in your case).

2) Your issue involves viruses/spyware/malware, which should be posted in the appropriate place for a malware specialist to address.

Download and install IE8 and see if that resolves the problem (unless, of course, you're running Windows 7 which already has IE8)...

I'm not sure if I have win7 or not but I think I updated it recently. Should I go through add/remove and completely wipe out IE then download it through firefox? If your "Start" button at the lower-left HAND corner is a blue Windows logo, then you have either Windows Vista or Windows 7. If not, you have Windows XP (unless your computer is older than 8 or 9 years old).

If your "Show Desktop" button is in the lower-right hand corner instead of the lower-left, you have Windows 7.

If you click "Start" and you have a "Search for programs and files" bar, you have Vista or 7. Type winver in that search box and press Enter. That'll tell you for sure which version of Windows you're running.

You can download IE8 via Firefox. You don't even have to wipe it out through "Add/Remove Programs" (XP) or "Programs and Features" (Vista*).

*: Although 7 has "Programs and Features," that's irrelevant for our purposes, as it has IE8 by default.Quote from: Janalynne on February 23, 2010, 03:18:46 PM
can't.... i use ie7 for my work vpn ..

Why would IE8 not run on a VPN ? ?because my company i work for has not updated their software to bump up to be able to work on IE8....so ... it won't load on ie8 or crome or firefox at all .. only on IE7 and i found out about the abode flash update... and mine was corrupted.. at the moment i have the uninstall version of the flash player blocked becuase it repeated with different number au, then bu, then cu after everytime i block it..it adds ANOTHER letter charcter because it kept asking me to install when i wanted to uninstall and so right now i seem can't get rid of that flash player for the moment.Just downloaded IE8, still no IE

Could Symantec or AVG be blocking it? The page comes up but nothing happens and I can't do anything with itQuote from: Janalynne on February 24, 2010, 02:08:15 PM
because my company i work for has not updated their software to bump up to be able to work on IE8....so ... it won't load on ie8 or crome or firefox at all .. only on IE7
That makes no sense to me. If it works on IE7 it should work on IE8. Have you tried? If this is a company PC, you're better off letting your IT department handle that. Some IT departments are quite strict about what software you can and cannot install.

If this is a personal machine, just install IE8, test, and if it fails, uninstall it and you'll be back to IE7.All i was suggesting is any Co. website/portal if written properly for IE7 should not only show up fine but work under IE8...VPN or not...

Solve : Browser starts skipping?

Answer»

I'm using WinXP SP3. This problem occurs with both firefox and internet explorer, so I don't think it's a browser ISSUE necessarily.
When I watched video online (hulu, youtube, etc) after a few minutes the video gets jammed and the audio starts skipping, repeating the same noise over and over. Even if i close the browser, the noise persists. After a few seconds the computer gets jammed all together (mouse moves, but no buttons are active, alt-ctrl-del doesnt work). i have to manually shut down and restart.

I've updated graphics and video drivers, scanned for viruses (nothing). I have no IDEA what is causing this. Could it be hardware? RAM maybe? Is there a way to check for these problems? What are your system specs?2.16 GHz with 2gb ramOkay. Open TASK Manager to the Processes Tab and sort on the cpu COLUMN with highest usage at the top (double-click on "cpu"). Play a video. when the problem begins, see if some process is chewing up your cycles. With all applications closed I saw the following:

System Idle Process: 80-90
Services.exe: 10-20
System: 0-5

At point of "death", with firefox and video running (then getting jammed):

System Idle Process: 45
Firefox.exe: 30
Services.exe: 22
System: 4What type of internet connection is this ? ?I know you said you scanned for viruses, but I'd do it again. I don't like the services.exe process using so much of the cpu. Use BOTH your av AND MalwareBytes to scan PLEASE.

Solve : Certain IE8 cronology does not fully delete via internet options/delete .why??

Answer»

Have Microsoft Windows Vista and IE8 -

when i GO in internet options, general tab, eliminate all - to eliminate records of my IE activity.. I still find a record of the visited places on the browser bar http - then when I delete each http noted, some items disappears for good, CERTAIN ones come back even after individual deletion.

After applying the "option/delete all" as I park in the current web page I would expect to see only the current web page http address - why do I see instead a FULL chronology of sites I did delete before and of sites I did not even visit, both items seemingly beyond deletion?

How do I get a clean browser slate?

Thank you for your help.
PS - the undeletable chronology remains also after running CCleaner program. That actually may be auto-complete in the browser bar...not History.

It can be turned off...but i have no idea how as i haven't seen IE in a loooong tome...
Internet Options - Content - SettingsFound this post after seeing your e-mail about not being ABLE to post on the forums, looks like you figured that. I'd also try pressing CTRL+SHIFT+DEL, make sure everything is checked and then click delete. That should clear everything.

Solve : IE major problems?

Hello, I hope that these are IE issues. Here they are...

Cannot download, anything. The yellow bar never OCCURS and the website will just go away.

Internet options will not click open.

The top of my browser is missing. There is no file, edit, etc. It is gone.

I tried to uninstall and reinstall IE8. It does not change.

I have restored many times. Nothing changes. In fact, it will not let me restore anymore.

I have run for VIRUS's. It reads that I do not have anything.

Thank youWhat did you use to scan for virii ? ?
Any other apps acting up ? ?
How long has this been this way ? ?
Any new hardware/software installed RECENTLY ? ?Avanquest and it will be going on a week. No, I have not run anything new. But, I have noticed that I cannot remove the Ask toolbar. 1) Try Firefox or Opera and see if they work - let us know.
2) Never HEARD of Avanquest. Run a free online scan (http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/)
3) Run a scan with MalwareBytesDownload

Malwarebytes
and
SAS

Run full scans and see what comes up you may also want to try

AVG
If you have no anti-virus software

Just so you have links and let us know how you get on.I am not able to download anything. It will start, still no yellow bar. Or, it will start, and nothing happens. So, I am not able to scan for anything. The only good thing is that I am still getting security updates automatically from Microsoft. I just do not know what to do. Download them on ANOTHER PC and transfer them via USB or CD.

Solve : Browsing problem?

Answer»

The following relates to a problem that I have had for 3 weeks now. I have posted on a couple of other sites and searched everything that I could think of without finding a solution. Before I go mad from watching adverts can anyone please help?

One day I turned my PC off, no problem. The next day I turned it on, problem.
I have recovered a backup from before the problem started and it seemed to clear, the following day it was back.
OS: XP-SP3. 8mb Broadband through an ADSL modem, usually 7-7.2mb.
The problem is that the only way I can browse the internet is using IE7 without add-ons. If I try to use it normally or use Firefox, I have v2 and v3 installed, the browser window opens but before it connects to a website everything locks and I have to turn the PC off manually and restart.
If I open any browser offline they open without problems and I can access HTML files, and in the case of Firefox CHM files, from the hard drive. It is making the actual connection to any site that appears to be the problem.
All other connections for program updates and email software work.
When the problem started, for the first couple of days if I connected my Netbook to the PC and used ICS I had the same problem with the Netbook which has IE7, Firefox3.5, and Opera10.10, as soon as any browser opened the Netbook locked. Again all other access worked. At some point in my attempts to solve the problem something I did changed this as I can now use all the Netbook's browsers through ICS without problems. What it was that changed it I have no idea.
The add-ons that are common to the different browsers on the PC are also in use on the Netbook which now works. None of the add-ons had updated for some time before the problem started.
I have cleaned, checked, and defragged the hard drive and the registry. I have run full scans with a range of programs and found nothing. I have renewed adaptors, reset TCP/IP and Winsock, and purged the DNS cache, nothing. I have checked with my ISP about the settings that I have and they tell me that they are all as they should be. I can ping websites and get REASONABLE responses. I have tried moving ICS to other connections and even turning it off. Nothing I have tried has made the slightest difference.
I have even tried connecting a router instead of the modem with exactly the same results.
As I said, everything except the browsers is WORKING normally. I have OE and Mailwasher Pro, both work. I have about a dozen programs which update daily, some automatically, some manually, all are updating without problems.
I have several VPN's, I can connect to and through all of them without problems. And I have ICS and file sharing across the LAN, also without problems.Dude Pls Make That Note Short

So That Every One Here Could Understand It More Clearly

OR

Write Down In Points Quote

Dude Pls Make That Note Short

Sorry about that, tried not to leave anything out.

Basically the only way I can access websites is using IE7 without add-ons.
Try any other way and the PC locks.
All other internet access is working.
All browsers work offline.

That's the shortened version, most answers to questions about what I've tried to solve it are answered in my first post.918, please take no notice of the_mad_joker. It's better the more the information you give.

So, you have tried different browsers?
Have you tried resetting IE?Hi kpac, thank you for your reply.

Quote
918, please take no notice of the_mad_joker. It's better the more the information you give.

My thoughts exactly.

Quote
So, you have tried different browsers?

As I said in my first post, when this started it was affecting all the browsers that are installed on both computers.
In the last couple of days I tried updating Firefox3 on the PC to 3.0.18 which has just come out but the problem remains.

Quote
Have you tried resetting IE?

Until an hour ago when I saw your post the answer was no. Since then I have tried the reset manually and using the 'Fix It' both of which failed, thinking about it since this might be due to other software which is installed in IE7.
I then uninstalled IE7 and reverted to IE6 which had the same problem.
I have now returned everything to as it was.
As far as IE itself is concerned I have the same version, the same add-ons, and the same settings on both computers, one works the other doesn't, even over the same connection (ICS)?

I am not a computer expert otherwise I would probably not be looking for help but I do have a couple of thoughts on what is happening and would appreciate opinions from people with more understanding:

The problem only affects the ability of browsers to connect to websites. It does not prevent them working offline.
It is not specific to any single browser, it affects all of them.

As all other software is able to connect it does not as such seem to be a general connection problem.

As ICS works it would seem to be a problem with the PC rather than the actual connection.

My first question is: What is it that takes place between the browsers and the internet that does not apply to other software and the internet?

In my research I have come across 3 things which I only understand up to a point:

TCP/IP: I know enough about this to be able to reset it which, as far as I can make out, should have resolved any problems in that area?
DNS: With the exception of the network between the 2 computers this appears to be set to automatic on everything else?
DCHP: This I do not understand?

Given my limited knowledge, to me everything points to one or more incorrect settings but I have no idea where!Have you CONTACTED your ISP and have them run a Line check on that ADSL modem ? ?
Is there a router in this equation ? ?
Can you recall anything that has changed i.e. new soft/hardware ? ?Hi patio thank you for your reply.

Quote
Have you contacted your ISP and have them run a Line check on that ADSL modem ? ?

I have contacted my ISP twice, they have run a Line check and they have also been through the settings I have, as far as they are concerned the problem is with the PC.
Two weeks before this problem started they got me to reset the adapter, it was working at the time but they have moved to a new system and wanted it to be reset. After the problem started I contacted them the first time to see if it was the change that was causing the problem, they said no. The SECOND time was about a week later when I got them to go through their various settings with me all of which were correct, although they were certain it was not a Line problem they checked it and said they could detect no faults. They added that if it had been a Line fault I would probably be having connection problems with other things beside browsers, which I am not.

Quote
Is there a router in this equation ? ?

As such no.
I have a router which I normally only use if I am running my Netbook on its own. (There are a number of practical reasons for this.) I have never had a problem with the modem but just to be sure I did try using the router instead of the modem and the problem stayed the same, in fact everything stayed the same including the connection speed.

Quote
Can you recall anything that has changed i.e. new soft/hardware ? ?

I have not changed any hardware for over a year.
With regard to software, I keep all the installation files I download on a second internal hard drive until I stop using them or they are updated. Putting them in order of Date Created, there were no new programs installed for the 10 days before the problem started, and no programs were updated in the 3 days before the problem started. The last updates that are directly connected to the browsers were Silverlight and Shockwave both on the same day 2 weeks before the problem started. The only other thing that might have updated are Firefox extensions but I could not think of any at the time that had and I would not have expected that to have affected IE, or as it did at the beginning, Opera on the Netbook.

I have been known to make registry tweaks when I come across them from time to time but again not within the last few months.

As I said in my first post this problem turned up quite literally overnight. When I turned the PC off everything was working, when I turned it on the next day I had this problem and not the faintest idea why.

(It occurred to me after I had written this that my security programs are updated daily but they are all common programs and in use on both my computers. In any event I am not aware of anyone having problems with them.)This is a very brief post to say that I have my browsers back.
I'll post again tomorrow.Good to hear...sorry we couldn't assist on this end...Quote from: 918 on February 22, 2010, 06:06:06 AM
In the last couple of days I tried updating Firefox3 on the PC to 3.0.18 which has just come out but the problem remains.

Actually, Firefox 3.6 is the latest version.Quote
Actually, Firefox 3.6 is the latest version.

In general terms yes, but it is not the latest version of v3.
I installed v3.5 on my Netbook and lost a few extensions, if I go to v3.6 the last time I looked I would have lost another 25.

I found the cause of the problem purely by chance.

I have been thinking of changing some of my security programs for a while now and just recently I got hold of some free/discounted licenses for different programs.
Because it was always the last program to load, long after everything else, I decided that one thing that had to go was Ad-Aware. The last couple of program updates did not install first time round, something that had not happened before, and it never found anything anyway.
Even though I used Revo Uninstaller in Advance mode when I ran a search with RegSeeker I found over 200 entries and what caught my eye was that a large number of them contained the word 'internet'! I deleted all of them.
As soon as I rebooted I noticed that everything loaded faster and I also noticed that my internet connection was 300kbps higher than it has ever been. I tried Firefox2 and for the first time in over 3 weeks it opened my Home Page. Tried the other browsers and they worked as well.

I have since found that removing Ad-Aware has also sorted a few other things out:
My graphics card software had refused to update for the last 3 months, it now has.
A painting program which I downloaded to try about a month ago would never open, now it does.
Several unrelated error messages I KEPT getting in the Event Viewer have stopped.

I find it hard to believe that one program could affect so many different things without there being some indication that it was doing it but I cannot see any alternative.

Thank you to those who took an interest in this especially those who replied.
It will be interesting to see if there are any other people having problems with Ad-Aware.

I forgot to add that Ad-Aware is also Installed on my Netbook, but not for much longer!

Solve : How do I change version of Acrobat used to access PDFs using Chrome??

Answer»

The problem: I have (and need) Acrobat Writer 5.1, but also Acrobat Reader 8 as 5.1 is too old to open many PDF files. I recently had to reinstall Acrobat Writer 5.1, which then meant the computer has been using it as a default to (try to) open PDF files. I have reset Reader 8 as the default program for the .pdf extension via Windows EXPLORER, but this seems to have no effect on either IE or Chrome (which is my primary BROWSER). I read in the FAQ about using "Save As", but the page I am desperately trying to access (a secure online ticket) tries to AUTOMATICALLY open without any save as option.

How do I change which version of Acrobat is USED to open PDFs on the web in Chrome?

The computer: A buggy, slow HP Compaq 6710b notebook running XPTry Foxit...you don't have to remove either Adobe to give it a trial run.
I'd be interested to see if it will open older 5.1 PDF's as well...

Did i mention it's FREE ? ?

1. Do you have a good internet connection,(broadband preferred)

3. What browser are you using, do you have "pop blockers" activated.

Another browser plug-in you might need to install sometime is Microsoft's Silverlight. LIKE Flash, Silverlight is used by some websites for streaming media, i.e. video on the web page. Silverlight is a fairly recent product from Microsoft and isn't nearly as common yet as Flash. Whether it will take some market share away from Adobe's Flash is something that probably won't become evident for quite some time yet.

Silverlight is being used on http://www.nbcolympics.com/ for video clips from the Olympics.

Solve : How do I tell if I really have Javascript enabled??

Answer»

When trying to get into a chatroom, it keeps saying I don't have Javascript on.

But if I CLICK on Tools, Options, and then under Content is where I find that there is a checkmark next to Enable Javascript and also Enable Java also has a checkmark to.

I know I have difficulties with vocabulary words. So, am I misunderstanding what the definition of Enable means?

Thanks,
Amy
Don't mix up JavaScript with Kava. Usually chatrooms will use Java.....

Have you tried clearing the cache and trying again?yeah, but try not to really clear the cache and all if not necessary because of other issues we keep running into each time we do that.
Problems with getting BACK into my accounts. It says the passwords are wrong.
We have read things like this:
"
Please note: Dial-up users SHOULD NOT attempt to clear their cache as it may create COMPLICATIONS when trying to log back into Webkinz World."

Which we keep trying to understand, what exactly does clearing the cache do other than clearing the cache? Is it somehow also changing information? See Item 2 here. Clearing the cache doesn't change information. It deletes STORED information to make room for new more relevant information. It does delete some stored passwords but if you know your passwords that shouldn't be a problem.rather then clearing the cache you could try using "Control-F5" to reload a page. Control-F5 will refresh the page but will not use any cached images or page content.

Seems like with all electronics out there, sometimes weird unexplained things happen that can't nobody seems to have an answer as to what is causing the problems.
The reason we think the password being changed is DUE to clearing the cache is because of a couple of reasons:
1. It was working just a few seconds ago before clearing the cache. Seems to happen everytime we do clear the cache. The passwords are written down right in front of us, so isn't due to forgetting it.
2. Because of this that we read "Please note: Dial-up users SHOULD NOT attempt to clear their cache as it may create complications when trying to log back into Webkinz World."
Why does it say stuff like this? That is what we are trying to understand, what problems then does clearing the cache cause if it's not somehow changing the password?

evidently the "webkinz world" uses something other then a mere password for sign-on.

Ok, I don't know if this is in the right forum, so I'm sorry if it isn't... but anyways, lately I've had a lot of trouble with Hotmail. Solve : Firefox Addon?

Answer»

Mods: Before you move this to the browser section this is related to antivirus software.

I have a firefox addon called DOWNLOAD Statusbar. One of the OPTIONS is to automatically scan files with the designated scanner (pic attached). I currently run ESET Nod32 Antivirus 4 Business Edition located in "C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET NOD32 Antivirus" on my computer. My question is, which file do I USE and what do I use for the argument?

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]Shameless self-bump. *sigh*...does NO ONE know the answer?AHA! I've found the solution! After a deal of digging, I discovered this:
"C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET NOD32 Antivirus\ecls" /unsafe /clean-mode=delete %1
would do the trick (%1 is the file).I downloaded the EICAR test-virus, but for some weird reason it got a strange file not found error, but when I restart the download process, it downloads fine. When I scan the file individually with Nod32's GUI, it PICKS it up.

On a side not, the test virus is supposed to display a message in a DOS SCREEN, but I get an invalid Win32 application error... you have done well little one

you asked then you answered your own question,,,

this is meant as a pat on the back to you

Solve : GIF89a?

Answer»

I get on this one website and when I try to UPLOAD a picture, a BOX appears with "GIF89a" in it, nothing ELSE. A screencap- http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/9766/gif89a.jpg

I read that it's a .dll file, so I searched for it, but I don't have it, and I have no idea where to get it. All I COULD find was animation programs, and I don't want those.

My computer is Windows Vista (the joy), Service Pack 2, 64-bit, with Kaspersky Antivirus. I get the same error in both Firefox and Internet Explorer, both up to date, and I have the most recent Flash and Java updates.

I know it's just my computer because it works completely fine on another. I just need it to WORK on this one. :/

Solve : Log ins timing out.?

Answer»

First i'm sorry if this has been posted. I've read the THREADS and didn't see anything identical to mine.

Over the past two weeks I've lost most of my web abilities that require a LOG in due to a "page timed out" issue. I connect via usb tethering on my Iphone using a program called PDAnet. I have the newest version 1.54. OS is winxp PRO. My connection is 2.4 (according to pdanet).

Started w/Facebook, moved to gmail and has slowly progressed to any site that requires a log in. When it began i did the typical..

opt browser
flushdns/registerdns (even tho i connect via the iphone tethering i thought it a good try)
verified that the lac was disabled.
rebooted Firefox/pc
Nothing..
Tried IE. the only page that would load in IE was Google.
opt browser, restart. nothing.
ran maintenance on pc thinking it was a pc issue. Disk cleanup/defrag
reboot. still nothing.
Virus/malware scan. Nothing found.
did a restore to an earlier point i knew worked, nothing.

got really angry, backed up everything on a junk drive, formatted hard drive and installed a clean xp pro.

new mozilla
new IE (from xp pro of course)
New Google Crome
New Opera w/turbo.

nothing.

i lose a little more access each day. pages timing out. I can see my connection sending information but not receiving it.

Emailed facebook, thanks for nothing there. Facebook and other accounts work from a different pc w/different connection. All work from the Iphone itself. But when tethered it dies. Did connect last night to face book w/a proxy connection but it was TERRIBLY slow and allowed no interaction
so that's pointless.

Every setting in every browser is set to DEFAULT. Have disabled the firewall. Have not as of yet reinstalled Avast so it's not that. I'm at my wits end. Should I just give up the tethering or is there a work around? Or is this even my issue?

And now, even here when i tried to post, timed out. Dear God, can you hear me screaming from there??
This sounds more like the phone timing out rather than the browser...
Is this a laptop you are using ?

Have you checked PDAnet support ? ?I have contacted them. Sorry I didn't put that in the forum post.
Their response was that there is no reason that the application would stop responding but I was welcome to download and install the app to both the iphone and the desktop. Which i did, both before and after the reformat.

I've considered it's the phone timing out. Odd that it only does it on websites via the usb. I have no issues what so ever w/the phone itself.

I also failed to mention that my latest update for the OS is service pack 2. As you can imagine, When i tried to update, there was an unexpected error preventing me from the updating the software on the pc.

Thanks btw, for the quick response.

Just added..
I checked again tonight on cydia and there is a new release of the PDAnet there so i uninstalled it from the phone and installed the new release 1.61. Rebooted phone and tried to access a log in. No luck.

Solve : Firefox & AOL problems?

Answer» SEVERAL weeks ago I finally download Firefox and started using it. Their TROUBLESHOOTING and directions were just great so I didn't have much of a problem transitioning from IE...............until 2 days ago when I tried to retrieve my email from AOL and it wouldn't WORK. I could go into any other part of AOL that I usually use but not the email. It would ask for my user name and password and after typing them in it would tell me that I had mail, however, the mail wouldn't load. Everything works just fine when I switch to IE. Firefox apparently has this problem with AOL email so that it had some fixes that I tried: un-installing Adobe Flash Player and then reinstalling it and clearing out all cookies. Other than those 2 suggestions there was nothing else they recommended. Has ANYONE else had this problem and what did you do to rectify it in addition to Firefox's suggestions? ThanksFYI for anyone else with this problem: Problem SOLVED! I downloaded the newest Firefox 5.6 and was able to bring up my email in AOL. Quote from: 02bin3 on February 18, 2010, 07:46:22 AM

Solve : Browser which is "IE" stops working and says "Not Responding"?

Answer»

Hi There!
My browser which is "IE" sometimes stops working, and says "Not Responding" Whats wrong and what do I do? You could try different browser (for example, Mozilla Firefox: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/)Check your Internet connection...It could be your internet connection lagging, or it could be your COMPUTER. If you have a lot of space taken up on your computer's memory or if it is just an old computer that is likely the CAUSE, in which case the only thing you can do is delete unused programs, files, etc. You can also clear the CACHE, cookies, etc. but that will have a very small effect.Did you recently get IE8?Hey !Thanks 2 all U good people out there,This is a cool site.

Do you have cable, DSL or dial up?

Solve : Always get Security codes and images wrong even when typed correctly?

Answer»

okay so in these websites .. they give me a security code or image to copy .. i copy it exactly the same but nothing happens .. i asked my friend to log on for me on that website and he did it without any problems ..
So maybe now im thinking this is a virus ??
need people to give me any info or any help about this
I hope to solve this problem soon ... No idea what you are talking aboutlol...uhhhh...
okay let me try o explain..
when you sign up/register or log in on some websites .. they show you an image of .. like EFCG.. then you have to type in EFCG so you get it correct right ?
well in my computer i type it exactly like the security image but its still wrong .. I always get it wrong ...i get errors saying that the security image and the ONE i typed in didnt match .. get it now ? That's called captcha....
The letters are case-sensitive so Capital and small letters are sometimes used....
There is also an audio option on some so when you clik the speaker you hear what is needed to be typed.QUOTE

The letters are case-sensitive so Capital and small letters are sometimes used....
Actually, usually not. But sometimes, yes they are case sensitive. Usually all CAPS are accepted. Some of the letters and numbers can be hard to read clearly but most sites have a button to issue a new code. Sometimes the new code is easier to read.

Some sites scramble the letters and numbers a little too much. Most captcha programs have an audible version. Listen to that and type in what it says.but guys I even get the most simple ones wrong(though i typed it correctly) ... Its exactly the same but the websites says im wrong >< Quote from: goergemiguel on February 09, 2010, 06:21:17 PM

What web browser are you using? If you are using Firefox, try getting this addon.
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/966/
It's an addon called "Tamper Data". When you're about to submit the information for registering, click Tools > Tamper Data > Start Tamper. Then click the submit button. It will bring up a message. You may have (quite) a bit to look through, but eventually you should find the captcha code. If that ISN'T what you entered, something is interfering with your browser somehow.
that is what i keep getting ... no matter what i do .. and I dont really get how to use tamper data >< LOOKS like you correctly typed in the code. After typing it in, do you click on LogIn button?

Maybe try something else...

Solve : My browser choices?

Answer»

I am a long time fanboy of Opera, but with their problems rending pages because of their stubborn "We are the policemen of proper HTML" approach I have started looking around. I don't mind IE8, have tried Google Chrome, not crazy about the fox. Just recently I loaded SEAMONKEY on a portable, I KNOW you are saying FireFox, I like what I'm seeing so far. Right now it's
Opera 10.10
SeaMonkey 2.0.1
IE8
in that order, I feel a change coming thoughTake a look at Safari. Personally I'm an IE bigot with Firefox as a backup, but I also have Opera & Safari installed. Safari has some interesting features and a very sophisticated look and style. If you're not CAUGHT for HD space, install 'em all and try them. Have most of them on a thumb drive and the desktopOkay. THOUGHT you were asking a question - sorry My default is SeaMonkey, but I also use the other Gecko browsers Firefox, Flock, and K-Meleon. I also use IE 8. The Gecko browsers I favor because their function may be extended with extensions.
I use SeaMonkey because I have a home office and it's convenient to have browser, e-mail client, address BOOK, html composer, and chat in one application. Try Chrome -The Best Of all

Solve : Audio files in Google Chrome?

Answer»

I'm hoping someone has some experience to HELP me with this. I've been using Google Chrome and I like it a great deal except that when I encounter audio I get nothing. I noticed it FIRST when a friend posted a Gordon Lightfoot video clip on his Facebook page, but have had the same problems on YouTube and channelsurfer.com.

Any ideas?I normally use chrome and most audio files work fine, you PROBABLY are missing an add-on to listen to thatWell, they work in IE (which I've only been using when I WANT audio) and FireFox (which I installed yesterday in the hopes of finding a browser I like better- the jury's still out on that one). I don't know what add-on I'd need that I don't already have but I'll look into it.

Solve : Internet Broswer Failure - Please Help!?

Answer»

I am having problems with getting an internet browser to work on my desktop (writing this from my LAPTOP). It is a Dell using Wondows XP. I was running IE8 and now when I TRY to open it, it says it is connecting, but the screen is white and nothing ever comes up now. I tried downloading Firefox to my laptop, putting the install file on a flash drive, and putting it on my desktop. I installed it and it won't even open when I double click on the icon. I go to the task manager and Firefox isn't listed as something that is running, it isn't listed at all. Some things worth noting:

  • I ran Malware Bytes and one item came up in the search and I deleted it - no help.
  • I use Webroot for virus protection - I did a sweep and nothing came up.
  • I know I have internet, because IM CLIENTS function.
  • I added some DWORDS to my registry per advice on a google search that did not work. I have since did a system resore to 2 days ago, so those DWORDS are now gone.
  • I tried running without add-ons per another suggestion I found, it did not work.
  • I tried asking the computer nicely to work properly, that did not work either, go figure.

If ANYONE can please help me, I would be beyond grateful. Thanks ahead of time.Go to START > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt

Type in (Without quotes) "ping www.google.com"

What is displayed after? In spite of our malware scans I'd suggest going to the malware section of this forum and following the instructions in the announcement at the top of that page. Let's be 100% sure before we rule it out.

Solve : Re: Problems viewing webpages and watching videos online?

Answer»

i need help with viewing facebook it is sayin i need cookiesRight. This is all very simple.

a) You have a software firewall. ADD a rule to it for 'web' to ALLOW certain WEBSITES, or turn off the firewall and load the webiste again, to isolate the problem.

b) You have NoScript. Try 'allow all' for the PARTICULAR site or turn noscript off for a sec.
Firewall explains the 'cookies' problem. PERHAPS it is not allowing session cookies etc.
