Solve : Outlook Express v Windows XP wierd one? |
Answer» I started work on my home pc this morning and discovered that I could receive emails and read the preview window but could not open, reply to, open attachments or even create new emails and my contacts/address book was showing empty next to the preview screen. Solve : Display in IE too small? |
Answer» My SISTER in Florida uses XP and IE6. When I used her note-book recently, I noticed that the display in the main pane, in other words the images and text in the main pane, filled only about 2/3rds of the pane. The display in the left-hand pane, on the other hand, was perfectly normal. There was no question of curing this by dragging, because that merely changes the SIZE of the pane, not the display in it. Nor does it help to CHANGE the font-sizes, because the whole display -- fonts, images and all -- is under-sized. |

Solve : Explorer stop finding sites after a while (cable)? |
Answer» Hi. I have a cable modem connection in a PC. When I turn on the pc Internet explorer works fine but after a while of surfing, it stops finding sites. It always send a message as if the net were disconnected. I have to restart the pc to be able to see pages again, but after a short perdiod of time (that is not always the same) It start to send the message "The page can not be shown" (well, in spanish it said "No se puede mostrar la pagina") I click on "detect net settings" but nothing happens. I have try connect the modem via USB (it's a motorola SB5100) and via Lan, with the same results. I also noted that when this happen, the receiving bytes in the conneccion status windows, just freeze. THe sending count stiil go up, but the receiving is idle and just not change anymore. You have a nasty, do the scans.sorry, what do yo mean with "do the scans"?AVG AntiVirus Ad Aware Spybot CCleaner All are free, just google for them.mmmm I just had format the hard drive and reinstall W2k SP4 and IE6 (a guy install linux without permision of the owner) No strange software installed, only the "Out of the box" apps. No internet connection since then (two or three weeks ago) My friend (the owner of the PC) just installed a demo version of Norton that works untill january on next year. She said to me that no viruses were detected (I didn't run it by myself) But I will the scans just in case.... I'll use Adware and AVG... But I had a similar problem in a Laptop (in similar circumstances, Nothing in the lap but windows) but with a modem connection, that's why I think the problem is with explorer. I never was able to solve the problem in the laptop, because I thougth it was an ISP problem, and actually i almost not use that lap for net connections, but now, i'm not so sure.... Do you think this could be a bad config. settings or something? Or this just happend with nasty software?Do you have a firewall of any kind? Has this cable modem been used successfully with other computers? Have someone come over and give it a try. Quote I'll use Adware and AVG... Not enough, get Ewido at the very least or better STILL... Solve : winfixer 2005 won't leave me alone!!!? |
Answer» Ok, I have windows xp home EDITION and use the latest version of internet explorer. I am not having any trouble with the computer itself, seeing I shouldn't because I just got it a few months back, but everytime I'm on the internet, sometimes 3 or more times, this box pops up that says I shouldn't have to download anything extra to get rid of this... Unless you just formatted the drive and have 3-4 virus/spyware/adware removal tools, this is absolutely false. If you haven't checked with anything, get READY to be surprised! |

Solve : Downloading to disk? |
Answer» HEY guys and girls, I'm trying to ADJUST my settings so that downloads from the internet do direct to external disk rather than the current default setting, anyone know how to change it so that I decide where my downloads go?! MattAre you using a download manager or just the Microsoft stuff? Thanks for replying, I'm using the MS IE 6 on a computer at work running XP. This system is configured such that you cannot download software or freeware direct on to the computer in order to prevent virus etc messing up the system. When downloading a brochure for a car for example, the computer obviously recognises that this is not an .exe type file and will happily save it to a place of my choosing. When trying to download a piece of software, CopyPod in this case, it is blocked by the firewall on the server. However, there must be a way of altering the download path so that it goes straight to a memory stick/external drive, thereby causing no risk to the system. Any ideas?Probably you should not be doing this at work. That's why they have these restrictions. You may be downloading a brochure for a new job. Thanks for the lecture Dad! Quote Thanks for the lecture Dad! Some employers (such as mine) have a very strict and enforceable policy on using a work computer for things other than work related activities. They enforce it with programs to make sure it is not happening. Just FYI. http://www.surfcontrol.com/Default.aspx?id=375&mnuid=1.1 Your EMPLOYER no doubt has rules as well. Perhaps you signed an agreement when you started your employment or acknowledged these which you should feel obliged to uphold. Just part of being a good employee and a good citizen. I will sleep easy in my bed now knowing that there are people like you who feel that they have to offer moral guidance on these things. I know you are not supposed to do it, that's why i asked for HELP to get around it. FYI.Plums....... Quote know you are not supposed to do it, that's why i asked for help to get around it. FYI. Well , Plums, with all due respect .......you should direct your query to the person or persons who set up the security on THEIR system. I'm absolutely certain that once you present your case to them as to why you should be allowed to download whatever you want ......They will probably take immediate action. dl65 |

Solve : Yahoo,Msn,Hotmail? |
Answer» Hi, can someone please help me. I've scanned my computer using various software that i've downloaded but to delete all the infections i have to buy the software, which i can't because my computer won't let meThat's a worry. To answer your question, yes a clean INSTALL will get rid of the infections. First see if you can run an online scan. http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm If you can't, see if you can carry out the following steps. I guess you have to weigh up what is easier for you, a clean install Vs removing the infections. Download, install & update... CLEANUP Ccleaner ANTI SPYWARE Ad-Aware Spybot S&D ANTI VIRUS AVG Free (Set options to 'scan all files') ANTI TROJAN EWIDO (W2k & XP) a-squared (a²) Turn off SYSTEM Restore if applicable. (ME & XP users) Run Ccleaner Run Ad-Aware Run Spybot Run AVG Free Run Ewido Run a-squared (a²) Re-start in Safe Mode Re-run AVG Free Re-start in Normal Mode Turn on System Restore if applicable. (ME & XP users)Please, please, please learn to use resources such as SpywareWarrior before downloading any old "Anti spyware" app that takes your fancy! According to what you've installed (Most of it probably unknown to you), a format and reinstall may be your best option.Dont' woory i fixed my problem, it was quite simple really. I may still reinstall windows though cause there are other problems with my computer. Thanks AnywayWhat was the solution?I have the same or similar problem. All of a sudden for no apparent reason I am no longer able to login to my yahoo account from my computer but I can login from another computer. Also, I cannot order anything from my computer I can go through all the steps (like on Ebay) until it gets to the actual final steps of ordering and it will go to a blank page and say it is not available. Aside from this, everything else either online or off, seems to work just fine. The only real exception is that when I first open "Word" in any new session it always hangs for a long time at start-up. PastorDenPastorDen, carry out the PROCEDURES listed in this post and post a Hijackthis logfile in a new thread when done. If possible, zip the logfile and attach it rather than post it. |

Solve : Some sites won't load correctly? |
Answer» I just bought a computer that was reconsigned (I think thats what you call it when you buy something that was returned). Anyway when I go to some sites the images don't load or on some the links to download stuff don't work either. The http://www.xbox-skins.net/ site looks the same in my browser as yours, so I think the site is the problem, not our computers. I'm sure my system is working fine, so I consider that site a piece of junk. Opps I forgot the link to the other site: http://www.dfbarracks.com/mapdb/index.php?action=dm&mid=16805 The gamespot video not loading was actually firefox's problem. But I went to this site: http://www.xbox-skins.net : on my other computer and it showed up fine. Another thing that was making me mad was. On hotmail sometimes when I reply to a message it asks me to type in the characters in the image, but when I click ok it logs me out, and when I try to sign in again it asks for the characters again, and over and over. So I can't get back to hotmail unless I go on my old computer and type them in. So theres obviously something messed with my computer. or on this site: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/sl1m1thy/wormsguide/roper.htm : I used to be able to watch the videos but now the are still images (Click on a word under beginner then a video will apear beside it). Its wierd because I could watch them a month or so ago then it just stoped. I have AVGfree virus scanner and Zone alarm firewall. I use other stuff like Spyware doctor and spybot Search and destroy. I also use : http://www.trendmicro.com/hc_intro/default.asp : for finding malware and other stuff. From the X-Box site: Quote We apologize for the recent problems with the downloads section and the forum. At first, we thought it was a server problem and tried to fix it by reinstalling several server scripts. When it did not work, we restored a site backup made on 5th March 2006. Unfortunately that led to a number of recent SUBMISSIONS being lost. We would be grateful if the contributors can submit the files again. We will be monitoring site closely for any future recurrence. The other sites (And the X-Box site at the moment) display correctly as far as I can tell. It may be worth your while having a look at this thread. Quote From the X-Box site: I will try that out in a bit, but the microsoft Anitspyware download doesn't work. I forogt how to get to safe mode though......Tap the F8 key immediately after POST for the XP startup menu. Quote Just for the info: I fired up my old Win 98SE machine. http://www.xbox-skins.net displays OK on it, but still does not display properly on my Win XP machine. http://www.dfbarracks.com/mapdb/index.php?action=dm&mid=16805 displays fine on my Win XP PC. I can also see the little videos on http://homepage.ntlworld.com/sl1m1thy/wormsguide/roper.htm. I also have a laptop computer with Win XP. I can see http://www.xbox-skins.net OK on it. So, or some reason, my main rig, like yours, does not like that website. Thats wierd. My old computer originally had windows 98 but I installed XP on it and it can view all of those sites fine, But the new computer I have with XP doesn't. |

Solve : How do I get my download speed faster?? |
Answer» None of the download programs work for me. I have AOL dial up and download at a speed of 4 kbs a sec. Please help me Was it ever faster than this? AOL might be restricting you from going any faster. Might want to upgrade from dial-up eventually. Would any transfer actually take place at 4Kb/s? I would think that just about any server on the net would kick anyone downloading at that speed with a timeout error.Just to ensure we're talking the same language here: 1KBps = 8Kbps, yes? At 4KBps it would take NEARLY two days to download a 650MB ISO. At 4Kbps it would take two weeks. INSTEAD, I usually get my Linux ISOs within ten hours. Have you measured any download rates from any servers? Some FTP servers happily give me HUNDREDS of KBs of bandwidth... Quote None of the download programs work for me. I have AOL dial up and download at a speed of 4 kbs a sec. Please help me If you enjoy surfing and downloading over the ethnet you should get high speed connection. Try getting cable and i don't think it that expensive but it o.K.. There some high speed GOES about gigabyte per second.. Extremely fast but very expensive per month to rent.. |

Solve : Problems upgrading Internet Explorer? |
Answer» I have two computers, one Windows XP and the other Windows 98. The Windows 98 PC is an Atika with 64 MB RAM, floppy and CD-ROM drives, and sound and video cards. I have an old Internet Explorer 4 that I was trying to upgrade to version 6. I went to the Windows Update web site and ran a computer check which found that I needed 24 CRITICAL updates. I began downloading and although it took a while with my slow dial-up connection speed, it was going fine until the last fifteen minutes. Then this message came onscreen: "Stopping in five seconds." My monitor went dark and the power switched off. When I turned my PC on again I could no longer access any web sites and everything ran much slower. Now all I can do is check my email. I need to run my Norton Antivirus/Antispam programs but believe I need to be on the Internet to do this. I'm wondering if downloading the 24 updates was too much for my old computer? Perhaps I should have downloaded only a few at first? Can anyone tell me what I can do to upgrade my IE browser? How can I do this if I can't connect to the Internet? Please help. Now all I can do is check my email. I need to run my Norton Antivirus/Antispam programs but believe I need to be on the Internet to doI am confused by your comment that you can check your Email.........( you must be connected to receive Email.) What happened to your IE 4 ? where did it go ? Further , Why cant you run your Norton AV ....... it matters not if your on-line or off-line .....It will run. dl65 You must have Win 98 first edition, RIGHT? I'm pretty sure Win 98SE (Second Edition) came with IE 5. In my opinion, you'd been better off not to download the "critical" updates for Win 98; I do the Windows updates thing with Win XP, but I've had negative results with Win 98, just as you have. As you said, now your computer runs much slower. If you want to GET it back to it's former speed, you may need to format your hard drive and freshly install Win 98. If you do that, and if you use the computer on the Internet, I would get a router so that you have some hardware firewall protection, and also install a SOFTWARE firewall. And, of course, keep anti-virus software current and use some spyware removal tools to keep it clean. If you downloaded - download only, not install - Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 on your other computer, could you burn it to a CD, then install it on your Win 98 computer from the CD? If you can't burn CD's, maybe you could ask someone you know to do this. You can clso order a CD from Microsoft with Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1. The cost is $5 plus tax to US residents.I think there are other issues and 64 meg. is really the functional low on RAM for 98. I vote for a reinstall AND add the updates then compare.i'm pretty sure your conputer can take IE6 because i have and even older one that runs it: Pentium 1 120 mhz 16 mb RAM SVGA Video Win98SEThanks to dl65, soybean, GX1_Man, and SovietGenius for your wisdom. With my old Windows 98 computer, I now have upgraded my IE browser by going to Download.com and downloading IE 6 Service Pack 1. My mistake was trying to use Windows Update to upgrade from IE 4.01. Windows Update only delivers updates for current versions. It doesn't do a thing for upgrades. So it wasn't that my PC was too old. It was just that I was too uninformed. Now my system is up-to-date. One interesting thing, however. When I hit Start and Programs, IE 4.01 is still listed. When I went into My Computer, Program Files, and right-clicked Internet Explorer I then clicked Explore. When I got into IEXPLORE.EXE I was advised that a new version had already been installed (IE 6) and it wasn't necessary to install it again. So even though IE 6 isn't listed under Start, Programs my computer still recognizes it. So I assume there's no harm in just leaving it alone. Now I can do everything from checking email to Web surfing to even running my essential antivirus program. Just thought you'd like to know my outcome. Thanks again! jandal |

Solve : can't open "links"?? |
Answer» HI, guys, Another simple question from a novice. When on a website and it has links, (I think that's what they're called) just like this site has, and you click on them to open the link or go to another website, or whatever, nothings happens. Is this something to do with my settings as I have looked at all of them and can't see anything relevant. As an example a local pub has a website and it has keys down the left hand side which say things like : food, menu, about us, events, etc. and when I click on them nothing! However, when I do this at work they work fine. A work colleague suggested holding down the control key and clicking but this doesn't work either. Anyone any ideas please? TINY :-?Do you have some sort of pop up blocking software on the problem computer? (I think your friend assumed so, as this technique will work with some of them.) Has it always been this way? If not, when did it start and what has changed?Hi, GX1_MAN Thank you for responding. I cannot recall when this STARTED to happen unfortunately. I have AVG, AVAST, Adaware SE, Spybot, CCleaner and ewido on the computer. I have gone into tools, pop-up blocker, in IE and it is turned off. Cannot see anything in the above programmes that allows you to enable or disable pop-up blockers although in my own amateur way I must admit I cannot see what else it can be. Solve : IE 6 slowly loses connection then "hangs" up? |
Answer» I have a Dell XPS stand-alone desktop with Widows 98 2nd edition and MS Office SBE. I've always had DSL. Last month I started losing my IE 6 connection - sometimes after 5 minutes - sometimes after 10 minutes, or sometimes never. It starts by slowing down making connection until it hangs up with "Cannot find page" message. I have to reboot to get it to connect again. My e-mail Outlook program doesn't lose it's connection even though IE does. I've reset all IE security and other options to default. I clean out the "temp" files and history regulary. Plus Disc Cleanup and Defrag. I've replaced the DSL modem and reinstalled the DSL software. I run the current version of Norton Anti-virus and check for updates daily. I use Ad-Aware. I've scanned with Panda. I use Registry Mechanic and BugDoc. I use Zone Alarm firewall. Popup Stopper, Window Washer. I've used the IE repair tool. I install all MS updates. All of my "tool" don't give me a clue to a problem but I suspsect it's in the browser. I hadn't installed any new software when the problem started. It seems like IE 6 had a bad day but learned to enjoy taunting me. |

Solve : one small question? |
Answer» well after the automatic updates, which update some security in IE also... there's a problem with my website... the flash is viewable but not active... hover your mouse over it, do you see the box around it? and let it stay for a while and you'll see the tag that says, "click to activate"OK, now I see what you mean, and I agree it's annoying. And, apparently, it is the result of recent Windows Updates. I don't knoe what you can do about it; re-designing the site would be a huge task, no doubt. However, I believe your description of it is erroneous. It's an ActiveX issue, not a Flash issue. Or, it's how you use Flash. That message, "Click to activate ...", does not appear on every occurrence of Flash when view various sites. It appears to be the use of Flash in menus or certain other uses that triggers the message. Quote If this is a browser-dependent security setting, then it's unlikely you can change something to make this work. You may need to redesign. haha, my site works on fine on netscape, firefox, and it was working fine on IE until the updates... i usually make sure it works fine on both firefox and IE, since those are the two most used browser. so no way to go around this? and yeah sorry, maybe i wasn't clear. i thought it was a flash thing... to be honest i don't even know what active x is, i only know how to make flash menus with a simple program that i have..."Microsoft has acknowledged that not all Web site DEVELOPERS will have modified their pages to account for IE's new behavior -- the easiest way for developers to sidestep user activation is to call the ActiveX controls via JavaScript -- and so will also release a patch on Tuesday to delay the changes."is there any way to fix this? i mean it's really annoying... view this page. http://www.airtightinteractive.com/photos/ i use that same flash gallery script for one of my site too... view it with the new updates in IE... and then view it in firefox... see? it doesn't even work at all on IE. It was working before the upgrade. this new thing is so lame! i find alot of problems with it.In Add/Remove Programs, you can check a box that says "Show Updates" above the file list (assuming you have XP). Now all you have to do is scroll down and find the right one. But make sure you know which is the correct update to remove; if you don't, the situation will be vaguely similar to Indy Jones and the Last Crusade. (He chose..... poorly.....)It appears to be the Security Update for Windows XP (KB912812). |

Solve : Problems with Certain Websites? |
Answer» Well I use Firefox but i guess its pretty much the same question anyway... I have trouble connecting to certain sites, or when I do it has a lot of problems with loading pictures (sites such as myspace and facebook). I have ethernet on my MOTHERBOARD, and i KNOW its not a problem with the connection because on my other (much slower computer) it connects fine. I'm on a Linksys Router (not wireless) but that shouldnt be a problem. Any help is appreciated. Are you able to try a network card in this computer? Could be that the onboard ethernet is jiggered.it'd be possible but my pci slots are all full so it would be a hassle. if theres another solution (or something else i could try prior to doing that) i'd want to try that first Well I use Firefox but i guess its pretty much the same question anyway... I have trouble connecting to certain sites, or when I do it has a lot of problems with loading pictures (sites such as myspace and facebook). Is this a consistent pattern? Are there certain sites that absolutely will not display on this computer? If so, take a look at your hosts file. You can find it by doing a search for hosts; open it with Notepad. See whether it shows the sites you cannot access. I also had this problem, i know i say this alot but are you on AOL? If so try changing the MTU size in your router to 1400. This sorted it out for me, anyway hope this helps. Best of luck. C}{r1$nah im not on aol, but maybe i'll try that with my router anyway. its not that i can't access the websites, but on certain ones pictures wont load or it will take a very long time to navagate around it.myspace fully loads quite quickly for me & I'm on dialup, ping myspace & compare the reults. Solve : Problems with IE on Win 98? |
Answer» :-? I know I have an old operating system and plan to dump it soon. But can anyone tell me why while online using DSL I always seem to get errors while clicking links that is the standard "page not Available" screen. Also many time I load a webpage and pictures many times do not come up , just a red X . I have downloaded IE 6.0 and run Trend mico virus scans daily . Any ideas while this is working so sluggishly ? every third address click or so brings up these errors !! HELP Firewall? Free from spyware? Did this always happen, or did something change recently?Perhaps the DSL SERVICE is just really poor?I had a similar problem a year ago with my 98 SE as far as the red X. In fact, everything was slowing down and I had DSL. ASSUME you have IE6. Make sure your cache is cleared by going to Tools, Options, General Tab. Hit Delete Files then check "off line content" then Okay. I had never clicked the "off line" content because I'd never saved anything for off-line use. At least as far as I knew. However, it took the computer 5 minutes to clean out those files. I thought Disk Cleanup WOULD have done it but it hadn't. |

Solve : OE folders won't import - blood on keyboard!? |
Answer» Broken finger nails and blood on my keyboard, all self inflicted! I tried to reduce the size of my Inbox and Sent Items by creating a NEW folder in Windows\Appilc data\Identities (instead of GETTING OE to create the folders), saved all the old data in these folders, but now can't open them through OE, and can't restore them THRU "import". How do I get OE to "see" my new folders? :-?What method did you use to "save" the old data? You know, I've tried so many fixes I can't really remember! I think I highlighted the emails in OE and copied them to the new folderIt sounds to me like you CREATED the new folder in Windows Explorer. Surely you didn't try and drag the emails from Outlook Express into Windows Explorer?Yes, I created a new folder in Windows Explorer. But this is the catch - I can't remember how I managed to move my messages to this folder. Certainly not drag and drop. I did highlight the messages, but couldn't copy and paste, couldn't have "Imported/Exported" as OE doesn't "see" this new folder, so there is the nub of the problem. If you exported it from OE, you should be able to import it again. What problem exactly are you having on import?I'm using Windows 98 2e, OE 6. Click File, Import, messages, browse, find the identity folder and click next, get message "The specified message store could not be opened. It may be in use by Outlook Express" = can't import itself into the same identity. Tried to create a new identity and it will import to there, but only the folders that OE can "see", and not my folder Sent Items 2006. Also tried renaming the folders but OE isn't fooled by that. |

Solve : The Internet explorer keeps shutting itself down.? |
Answer» Any ideas why? The error message I get reads: Internet EXPLORER has encountered some problems and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. -- The thing is, it pops up every time you close out of an internet window or popup, and sometimes it comes up for no reason. It shuts down any internet pages you have open. I think the spyware we had on our computer may have changed some internet settings which makes it do this, but I don't know. This problem has been going for about a week to two weeks. And yes, we have four of the reccommended spyware scanning programs which we run regularly.Do you have SP2 for Windows XP installed? What "reccommended spyware scanning programs" are you using? Provide some info about the spyware problem you had? Why do you feel sure that you are completely rid of it?Not really sure what SP2 is, sorry. Lemme think, I know we have Spy Sweeper, Ad Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy, and... I don't know the other one off the top of my head. The problem was we had mainly a ton of popups, and things were downloaded onto our computer frequently. Every time we ran Ad Aware (before having the other programs) we got about 143+ items found. The basic spyware infestation. I know we've got the problem to a MINIMUM, as we only find tracker cookies, and under ten of those now. Is that about what you were asking for?To verify whether you have SP2, right click on My Computer and select Properties. If you have it, you'll see "Service Pack 2" under Windows XP. I still need to download SP2, but I need to know, when I update, will my files get destroyed or ruined? I have quite a few art and microsoft word files that I need on my computer. Will updating to SP2 delete or corrupt these files? Should I save them to a disk? Also, rather pathetic, but how do you start in safe mode?D/L and installing Win SP2 ...... will not damage or corupt your files .......... To get into "Safe mode" ...... reboot your machine and just as it starts to load , repeatedly tap the F8 key ......... and you will be given some options as to how to start windows ....choose SAFE mode . dl65 Okay, will do. |
