Solve : Access to secure websites?

Answer»

I can't seem to be able to log on to any websites that require a password for access. Not even hotmail. I enter the address and password, press enter, but get taken to a "page cannot be displayed" site. This is the same for any sites that require any password. I have reset all my internet explorer security options, but the problem has not resolved itself.

Any ideas?

Thanks. Are you free from virus/spyware/adware? What are you using? Have you CHANGED any settings at all lately? Is the computetr otherwise normal? Normal, non-password sites pose no problem?I am using microsoft internet explorer on a laptop with wireless. I don't think I have spyware. I have't changed any SETTING on my computor recently, so I can't understand why it is suddenly won't allow me to access these sites. I can however access all other websites without any problem.

Thanks for your help. Well, if you don't think you have spyware you may be surprised. I would suggest downloading, updating and running AdAware and Spybot (free if you google for them) and see what turns up. It couldn't hurt, and removes one of the variables.I have run Ad-Aware and Spybot on my computor, and have deleted all the files that they brought up. However I am still having the same problem.....any more suggestions? Thankyou.Give about 10 addresses that you cannot get to.

can you ping them?IE>Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>Check your java settings.I have pinged Hotmail.com: It sent 4 packets and received only 3 back, so a 25% loss. However, I don't really understand what that means as I have never pinged a website before.

I can not access websites LIKE hotmail.com, enter MSN messenger, log on to my ebay ACCOUNT or internet banking. No kind of website that INVOLVES anything slightly more complicated than just viewing it.

I have looked at all the java setting for internet explorer, and everything seems to be fine. They are basically set on Medium-Low.

Anything else I can try? Thanks again.i have the same problem, i cant veiw any secure websites, like ebay, hotmail etc but i can veiw yahhoo mail, what have you done to make it work!? PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!I am having the same problem being able to access any https site (ie hotmail). I have run ad aware and deleted all files that it found. I then rebooted and I am still unable to access. Please help!Very wide discussion here

Solve : iexplorer.exe in task manager?

Answer»

Does anyone know what causes the .exe file iexplorer to open several times in task manager? Everytime I get online, there are 2, 3, sometimes as many as 4 or 5 iexplorer.exe's RUNNING. I have ran several different adware/spyware/malware removal programs, defragged my HARD drive, and even USED my disk to REPAIRE xp and nothing helps. How can I stop this? I know it's nothing major, but it's *censored* annoying!!

Thanks. You can google for it, or LOOK here:

Solve : Missing pictures on web sites?

Answer»

I am accessing web sites and can see some pictures but not others on the same page. The ones I can't see come up with an X ina box.
The pictures are not likely to be pornographic or anything like that and I'm sure my firewall isn't blocking them.

Any ideas? You have a firewall that blocks pornographic content? Smart firewall. I wonder if it gets aroused.

I don't think you should be using the Internet when you're not sure what you're LOOKING at.

Set the advanced options of IE back to default or tag the 'show media/pictures' option or whatever its named. What type of pictures are they [likely to be]? If they are advertisements, it MAY be your hosts file blocking them.

with regardsReceiving some, but not all pics can be caused by several things:

- the unreceived pics may not be there. Try several different sites. Are the missing pics always the same or do they change. Refresh the page several times.

- your browser could be TIMING out due to a slow or erratic connection.

- you may not have enough room in your temporary internet folder(s). Is your C: drive nearly full?

- you could have a browser problem. Is it up to date? Have you tried another browser?

DellAre you on dialup or cable modem? Quote

- you may not have enough room in your temporary internet folder(s). Is your C: drive nearly full?

Just expanding on that - even though I don't think this will definately be the case - you may need to clear your internet cache. In IE (or at LEAST the version I'm using), you have to click on TOOLS, INTERNET OPTIONS and then click on DELETE TOOLS under "Temporary Internet Files."

3) The issue is, I have a bd lock, the lock GET released when an window is closed. if i try the same for more than 50 times, one after another, of 1% of the times the request is not being submitted from the client.

4) During unload action is happening, wont the request be sent to the server.

5) Is there a limit for the length for request quee in IE.

How can this be handled. is there any option to RECTIFY this.
do let me know as soon as possible.it would be handfull if you say your os, your version of internet explorer, and perhaps (i can only guess as seen i don't have enouf information) your modem is broken, perhaps you should start with pinging in msdos: GO to start => run => type cmd, and in cmd you type: "ping and than SITE" and if you see an error, you modem is probably broken what wil explain 1% of the times the request is not being submitted from the client

Solve : Outlook Express v Windows XP wierd one?

Answer»

I started work on my home pc this morning and discovered that I could receive emails and read the preview window but could not open, reply to, open attachments or even create new emails and my contacts/address book was showing empty next to the preview screen.

I logged in as usual through my log in and am at a loss to know what to do. My wifes log in to the same software gives her access to all of the above. THerefore I am able to access through her connection on the same PC.

I tried contacting my ISP and they are not helpful as ACCORDING to them the emails and the account are WORKING correctly - they said to uninstall and install again - that was good except the install windwo said that a newer version had been detected and setup could not continue.

I thought about creating ANOTHER login - leaving my login alone but that is not possible as windows security has prevented me from accessing the administrators duties since loading service pack 2.

Any suggestions?

Nicktry in safe mode, the recover system option (that option that restores the registry entries from your computer) to a week before the problem, let me know if that works

greetz

blackberry Thanks for replying but I am having a problem with safe mode too - the directions from the start-help and support sectrion states to use shutdown on a dropdown list - I have a choice of logoff or turn off COMPUER the latter gives the added choices of standby turnoff or restart but at no time do I get the option to restart WITHIN safe mode.

Frustrated

NickBlackberry

After much huffing and puffing I managed to get around the data executin protection problem and ran restore in safe mode but could only get the system back to where it was 2 days ago and that is no good as the problem appears to be before that - the problem remains that I am still unable to sent, reply, create or open emails I can only read them in preview and cannot open attachments.

Earlier safe mode restores said that they could not restore to that earlier date and that no changes had been made. I tried several times to a lot of different dates but to no joy!

ANy suggestions to get my email back - my wife is now gloating that her side is OK! Quote

Solve : Display in IE too small?

Answer»

My SISTER in Florida uses XP and IE6. When I used her note-book recently, I noticed that the display in the main pane, in other words the images and text in the main pane, filled only about 2/3rds of the pane. The display in the left-hand pane, on the other hand, was perfectly normal. There was no question of curing this by dragging, because that merely changes the SIZE of the pane, not the display in it. Nor does it help to CHANGE the font-sizes, because the whole display -- fonts, images and all -- is under-sized.

Can anyone help ?Are you TALKING about screen resolutions?

Right click on the desktop and select properties. Choose the Settings tab and then change the resolution.

Sorry if this is not what you're asking.. could you post a screen shot?

with regardsYes, since posting the message I have learned that her Screen Resolution is set to the highest, and needs reducing to 800 x 600. Thank you for her help.

i tried the the bots and the browser still not working any other suggestions
It could be caused by any number of problems. First step is to look at any changes you've made lately to your system. Upgrades, software, etc.

You haven't really described your problem, but I'm guessing that you think your system is handling things more slowly, especially your browser. Otherwise everything is normal?

If so, problems LIKE these can be caused by external problems too such as your ISP or the websites' service or load.

Internally, you could be overtaxing your PC somehow. Try turning off/shutting down other programs and PROCESSES. Temporarily disable background scanners (anti-virus, firewall, adware, malware). Does this 'fix' your problem?

You could try another browser too. If you don't already have it, Firefox is a good alternative. You can get a free copy here: http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Beyond the above, you need to give more detail. What are/were you using? What have you changed? What exactly did each of the recommended spyware/adware bots report? I'd be surprised if all reports were perfect, especially if you use the internet.

Solve : Explorer stop finding sites after a while (cable)?

Answer»

Hi. I have a cable modem connection in a PC. When I turn on the pc Internet explorer works fine but after a while of surfing, it stops finding sites. It always send a message as if the net were disconnected. I have to restart the pc to be able to see pages again, but after a short perdiod of time (that is not always the same) It start to send the message "The page can not be shown" (well, in spanish it said "No se puede mostrar la pagina") I click on "detect net settings" but nothing happens. I have try connect the modem via USB (it's a motorola SB5100) and via Lan, with the same results.

I also noted that when this happen, the receiving bytes in the conneccion status windows, just freeze. THe sending count stiil go up, but the receiving is idle and just not change anymore.

I have not try to Ping (is not my PC and I forget to do that)
I check the Internet settings, everything is in the default and automatic state
I Update the usb drivers of the modem
I ran the internet connection wizard.

I hope somebody can help me.

Regards and thanks for your time!!

You have a nasty, do the scans.sorry, what do yo mean with "do the scans"?AVG AntiVirus
Ad Aware
Spybot
CCleaner

All are free, just google for them.mmmm I just had format the hard drive and reinstall W2k SP4 and IE6 (a guy install linux without permision of the owner) No strange software installed, only the "Out of the box" apps. No internet connection since then (two or three weeks ago) My friend (the owner of the PC) just installed a demo version of Norton that works untill january on next year. She said to me that no viruses were detected (I didn't run it by myself) But I will the scans just in case.... I'll use Adware and AVG...

But I had a similar problem in a Laptop (in similar circumstances, Nothing in the lap but windows) but with a modem connection, that's why I think the problem is with explorer. I never was able to solve the problem in the laptop, because I thougth it was an ISP problem, and actually i almost not use that lap for net connections, but now, i'm not so sure....

Do you think this could be a bad config. settings or something? Or this just happend with nasty software?Do you have a firewall of any kind? Has this cable modem been used successfully with other computers? Have someone come over and give it a try. Quote

Solve : winfixer 2005 won't leave me alone!!!?

Answer»

Ok, I have windows xp home EDITION and use the latest version of internet explorer. I am not having any trouble with the computer itself, seeing I shouldn't because I just got it a few months back, but everytime I'm on the internet, sometimes 3 or more times, this box pops up that says
Notice: If your computer has errors in the registry database or file system, it COULD cause unpredictable or eratic behavior.....and then goes on to ask me if i want to install winfixer 2005 to check my computer for free...

There are 2 choices. Ok, or Cancel...I always say cancel or hit the red x to close it. But..it doesn't listen and tries to anyway. I have wireless internet in my room that pulls off the internet in the living room.

It's aggrovating because i can't get it to leave me alone...i have the pop up blocker set to high, which blocks most other ones, but this thing just won't stop popping up. Then sometimes when i get through the process of trying to close it, whatever window i have open will close too, then like 10 min. later, it pops up again!!!!

Solve : saved files?

Answer»

If i'm downloading stuff from the internet at work that i'm not supposed to (i.e. online poker sites - it's LEGAL in Scotland, just not ethical to do it at work but that's my business!), is it SAVING to a central server somewhere? i.e. can my boss tell that i've been doing it? I delete my temp internet files, cookies and history but does it save elsewhere? A LOT of businesses use software to SEE who is on what site and for how long. Some have keyloggers to see exactly what you are typing!

If you're not supposed to do it, you probably shouldn't.

the site can save your IP adres from your computer from work

Can not connect to some links in web pages. I try to connect to my Yahoo BROWER, and the SCREEN freezes, and I get an error "missing gifview.dll file..........." Can not EVEN view any PDf files. Can any one help? Started out in the wrong Forum, maybe this is the right one?Did this previously work? What has changed since then? Are you using ADWARE/spyware/virus protection? If so, what is it?EVERYTHING was working fine until recently. I'm using Norton Anti-viruis (even upgraded to 2006 version thinking that maybe be the problem).

I was having probems with pop-ups, so I have recently installed Registry Mechanic, Registry Pro, and Lavasoft Adware SE Personal (I'm still having problems with pop-ups, though not as bad as the beginning). I believe that one of programs (I'm only guessing) was the one that removed the "gifview.dll" file as my problems started after the installation of these programs (Registry Mechanic & Registry Pro).Check to see if one of those programs has put the file in quarantine rather than delete. If so, it can be restored. Otherwise, you will likely have to reinstall the programs that don't work properly.or look here:

Solve : Certain sites turn my screen black and freeze it.?

Answer»

Hello, whether I'm in mozilla or explorer, a couple of sites have made my screen turn black and bring up a blue screen error. Today it was:

Following this, my keyboard locks and I have to restart my computer with an improper shutdown.

I've noticed that upon restarting sometimes (possibly every time, I can't remember) my zone alarm firewall doesn't work. It's fine once I restart it again, though.

2. I can't see that the microsoft download is compatible with windows me - it seems everything but. Should I still try to download it? Perhaps I didn't read something carefully enough.

Solve : IE6 takes a long time to download a page?

Answer»

My computer contains: Athlon 3200gb, 1 gig Ram, I have WinXP SP2 Home, and IE 6 SP1. I have a cable ISP and the download speeds (which just tested)vary from 2500 kbps to 3000kbps.

When I CLICK on a link in my OE e-mail, I am immediately taken to the web-site. When on a web-site, and I click on a link within the site, it takes "forever" to download the page....I watch the green progress bar, not much happens. It SAYS "done", but I still have to wait a long time for the page to download. I click the F5 key to refresh and still it takes a long time for the page to download.

I've checked for malware (AdAware, SpyBot, MS anti spyware, and CCleaner......no malware), I ran a system scan for viruses (AVG and then TrendMicro Housecall....no viruses), I cleaned out cache, Temp files and cookies. I ran Repair Registry Pro and it didn't help either.
I also ran Start>Run: typed in: sfc /scannow with my original Win XP CD and this didn't help. I also did "IE Fix".... didn't help either.

This problem occurs with e-mails from PCMag.com; Lockergnome.com; AllExperts.com, etc. A link within one of these e-mails when I click on the link takes a very long time to download.
I would hate to format/reinstall. I don't know whether that would solve my problem, and I'm not sure how to put the backed up data back where it belongs. (I did a backup using MS One Care).
I sure hope that U can help me with this problem

Over a time when your firewall asks you if you want to allow a connection and you permanently allow them they will then use your bandwidth whenever you do.

I tend to manually allow each one as they ask and never save the choice. It can be a bit of a pain but at least you know they aren't trying to update themselves constantly in the background.

Check your firewall and change any 'unnecessary' connections to ask again next time. Thanks for prompt reply (BTW, how do I set to get an e-mail when a reply is posted to my question?)

How do I see what services you have running? and which services are not REQUIRED to be running?

I don't use Zone Alarm. I use MS anti-spyware.
There are 3 items: System agents (25 of 25 checkpoint monitored an no activity); Application agents (25 of 25 checkpoints monitored and it shows 2 blocked events); and Internet agents( 9 0f 9 checkpoints monitored and no activity).
Is MS anti-spyware as good as Zone Alarm. I had been advised when I got Win XP that I don't need Zone Alarm and shouldn't install it.

Solve : snapshot?

Answer»

I took the snapshot of a dialogue box, save it in MS Paint, then saved it in MS paint format in Word.

Then write something abour the dialogue bos in the word file.

Then uploaded the word file to my site.

When i visit the site i see the dialogue box is not coming.Only letters are appearing.

1) Is there any other format excepting MS paint where i can save the dialogue box. MS paint picture does look haze.

2) what extensiton to give?CAn i give it a .gif extension.

3) What to do to let appear the snapshot in my web page? You can actually paste the snap shot on ANY platform - Photoshop, PHOTO CANVAS, or even on the Word document.i paste into word all the time ...with the print screen key and [ALT] + print screen...
Hey

I can also paste the snapshot in word.

The problem is not that.

The problem is when i UPLOAD that word file in a web host, the snapshots did not appear.

The best solution should be pasting it ONTO a new Photoshop document and do all the editing then save it as a picture.

Solve : Downloading to disk?

Answer» HEY guys and girls,

I'm trying to ADJUST my settings so that downloads from the internet do direct to external disk rather than the current default setting, anyone know how to change it so that I decide where my downloads go?!

MattAre you using a download manager or just the Microsoft stuff? Thanks for replying,

I'm using the MS IE 6 on a computer at work running XP. This system is configured such that you cannot download software or freeware direct on to the computer in order to prevent virus etc messing up the system. When downloading a brochure for a car for example, the computer obviously recognises that this is not an .exe type file and will happily save it to a place of my choosing. When trying to download a piece of software, CopyPod in this case, it is blocked by the firewall on the server.

However, there must be a way of altering the download path so that it goes straight to a memory stick/external drive, thereby causing no risk to the system.

Any ideas?Probably you should not be doing this at work. That's why they have these restrictions. You may be downloading a brochure for a new job. Thanks for the lecture Dad! Quote
Thanks for the lecture Dad!

Some employers (such as mine) have a very strict and enforceable policy on using a work computer for things other than work related activities. They enforce it with programs to make sure it is not happening. Just FYI.

http://www.surfcontrol.com/Default.aspx?id=375&mnuid=1.1

Your EMPLOYER no doubt has rules as well. Perhaps you signed an agreement when you started your employment or acknowledged these which you should feel obliged to uphold. Just part of being a good employee and a good citizen. I will sleep easy in my bed now knowing that there are people like you who feel that they have to offer moral guidance on these things.

I know you are not supposed to do it, that's why i asked for HELP to get around it. FYI.Plums.......

Well , Plums, with all due respect .......you should direct your query to the person or persons who set up the security on THEIR system. I'm absolutely certain that once you present your case to them as to why you should be allowed to download whatever you want ......They will probably take immediate action.

That's a worry.

To answer your question, yes a clean INSTALL will get rid of the infections.

First see if you can run an online scan.
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

If you can't, see if you can carry out the following steps.
I guess you have to weigh up what is easier for you, a clean install Vs removing the infections.

Download, install & update...
CLEANUP
Ccleaner
ANTI SPYWARE
Ad-Aware
Spybot S&D
ANTI VIRUS
AVG Free (Set options to 'scan all files')
ANTI TROJAN
EWIDO (W2k & XP)
a-squared (a²)

Turn off SYSTEM Restore if applicable. (ME & XP users)

Run Ccleaner
Run Ad-Aware
Run Spybot
Run AVG Free
Run Ewido
Run a-squared (a²)
Re-start in Safe Mode
Re-run AVG Free

Re-start in Normal Mode
Turn on System Restore if applicable. (ME & XP users)Please, please, please learn to use resources such as SpywareWarrior before downloading any old "Anti spyware" app that takes your fancy!
According to what you've installed (Most of it probably unknown to you), a format and reinstall may be your best option.Dont' woory i fixed my problem, it was quite simple really. I may still reinstall windows though cause there are other problems with my computer.

Thanks AnywayWhat was the solution?I have the same or similar problem. All of a sudden for no apparent reason I am no longer able to login to my yahoo account from my computer but I can login from another computer. Also, I cannot order anything from my computer I can go through all the steps (like on Ebay) until it gets to the actual final steps of ordering and it will go to a blank page and say it is not available.

Aside from this, everything else either online or off, seems to work just fine. The only real exception is that when I first open "Word" in any new session it always hangs for a long time at start-up.

PastorDenPastorDen, carry out the PROCEDURES listed in this post and post a Hijackthis logfile in a new thread when done.
If possible, zip the logfile and attach it rather than post it.

Solve : Some sites won't load correctly?

Answer»

I just bought a computer that was reconsigned (I think thats what you call it when you buy something that was returned). Anyway when I go to some sites the images don't load or on some the links to download stuff don't work either.

this site here doesn't load right. Check it out then look at the picture I uploaded (sorry its so small... Photobucket shrunk it because it was too big, but you can get the idea of how messed up it looks for me)
http://www.xbox-skins.net/

Or there is this site:
When I click on the "Download Now" it goes to another screen that says this:

-----------------------------------------
In order to keep people from making direct links to maps in our map database we check the http_referer header sent by your browser to verify you are following a LINK from our website whenever you download a map.

In most cases this method works fine - but some Norton Users have reported having trouble when trying to download maps from our site.

The following steps should solve the problem and allow you to download maps from the site without compromising your system security.

    * open up your norton internet security firewall software..
    * choose options..
    * choose the internet security option
    * in the dialog box that pops up choose advanced options..
    * click the add site BUTTON..
    * add dfbarracks.com
    * highlight dfbarracks in the list then choose the privacy tab
    * under browsing privacy area.. change referer to permit
    * make sure the checkbox for use these rules for dfbarracks.com is checked.

If you follow the above steps Norton will allow your PC to pass the http_referrer along to our site without compromising your system security in any way. This will not alter the behaviour of Norton Internet Security Firewall for any other sites that you use.
---------------------------------------------

I don't have norton installed so what could be the problem.

And on Gamespot.com I can't watch any of the game trailers.
I have tried these sites on firefox and on internet explore and they won't load.

I hope someone can help.

Edit: I have windows XP Service pack 2.The http://www.xbox-skins.net/ site looks the same in my browser as yours, so I think the site is the problem, not our computers. I'm sure my system is working fine, so I consider that site a PIECE of junk.

"When I click on the "Download Now" it goes to another screen that says this:" What site are you talking about?

"And on Gamespot.com I can't watch any of the game trailers." Exactly what are the game trailers? What links must be followed to get to them?

Also, what firewall, AV and other security software is in place? Quote

The gamespot video not loading was actually firefox's problem.

But I went to this site: http://www.xbox-skins.net : on my other computer and it showed up fine.

Another thing that was making me mad was. On hotmail sometimes when I reply to a message it asks me to type in the characters in the image, but when I click ok it logs me out, and when I try to sign in again it asks for the characters again, and over and over. So I can't get back to hotmail unless I go on my old computer and type them in.

So theres obviously something messed with my computer.

or on this site: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/sl1m1thy/wormsguide/roper.htm : I used to be able to watch the videos but now the are still images (Click on a word under beginner then a video will apear beside it). Its wierd because I could watch them a month or so ago then it just stoped.

I have AVGfree virus scanner and Zone alarm firewall. I use other stuff like Spyware doctor and spybot Search and destroy. I also use : http://www.trendmicro.com/hc_intro/default.asp : for finding malware and other stuff.

I also have a laptop computer with Win XP. I can see http://www.xbox-skins.net OK on it. So, or some reason, my main rig, like yours, does not like that website.
Thats wierd.

My old computer originally had windows 98 but I installed XP on it and it can view all of those sites fine, But the new computer I have with XP doesn't.

Solve : How do I get my download speed faster??

Answer»

None of the download programs work for me. I have AOL dial up and download at a speed of 4 kbs a sec. Please help me Was it ever faster than this? AOL might be restricting you from going any faster. Might want to upgrade from dial-up eventually.

FlameThat's about all you're ever going to get on dialup - 5K absolute max under perfect conditions.I regularly downloaded at 36Kbps or more when I was on dialup... (That's 4.5KBps - are we using the same units here?)Would any transfer actually take place at 4Kb/s? I would think that just about any server on the NET would kick anyone downloading at that speed with a timeout error.Dial-Up is crap.

Upgrade now.

I have cable =)

And i download at 560 kb per sec. Quote

Just to ensure we're talking the same language here: 1KBps = 8Kbps, yes?

At 4KBps it would take NEARLY two days to download a 650MB ISO. At 4Kbps it would take two weeks. INSTEAD, I usually get my Linux ISOs within ten hours.

Have you measured any download rates from any servers? Some FTP servers happily give me HUNDREDS of KBs of bandwidth... Quote

If you enjoy surfing and downloading over the ethnet you should get high speed connection. Try getting cable and i don't think it that expensive but it o.K.. There some high speed GOES about gigabyte per second.. Extremely fast but very expensive per month to rent..

Solve : Streaming Video Not Playing?

Answer»

Hey,

My friend is trying to view streaming WM video on the Internet but the content just doesn't load for him. He has tried LOWERING all IE security settings, to no avail. he also tried usng FireFox, with no luck. He has WM Player V.10 (latest etc) and the latest browsers.

Just wondering what could be causing this problem and how to resolve it. Any suggestions?

THANKS very much.

NickYou have Windows XP or Windows 2003. (I WOULD think)
Is it only one video that does not work, or do other videos work and just not the one you want?

If other videos work:
The video you are trying to OPEN may not exist, or the directory may be incorrect.

If no video works:
Try re-installing Windows Media Player
Install updates
The content works as it streams for perfectly and seamlessly. It just doesn't appear for him.

I will tell him to reinstall WM. Maybe that might work.

Thanks. Any other suggestions are much appreciated thanks again.

Solve : Problems upgrading Internet Explorer?

Answer»

I have two computers, one Windows XP and the other Windows 98. The Windows 98 PC is an Atika with 64 MB RAM, floppy and CD-ROM drives, and sound and video cards. I have an old Internet Explorer 4 that I was trying to upgrade to version 6. I went to the Windows Update web site and ran a computer check which found that I needed 24 CRITICAL updates. I began downloading and although it took a while with my slow dial-up connection speed, it was going fine until the last fifteen minutes. Then this message came onscreen: "Stopping in five seconds." My monitor went dark and the power switched off. When I turned my PC on again I could no longer access any web sites and everything ran much slower. Now all I can do is check my email. I need to run my Norton Antivirus/Antispam programs but believe I need to be on the Internet to do this. I'm wondering if downloading the 24 updates was too much for my old computer? Perhaps I should have downloaded only a few at first? Can anyone tell me what I can do to upgrade my IE browser? How can I do this if I can't connect to the Internet? Please help.
Thank you. Jandal. jandal....... Quote

Now all I can do is check my email. I need to run my Norton Antivirus/Antispam programs but believe I need to be on the Internet to do
I am confused by your comment that you can check your Email.........( you must be connected to receive Email.) What happened to your IE 4 ? where did it go ? Further , Why cant you run your Norton AV ....... it matters not if your on-line or off-line .....It will run.

dl65 You must have Win 98 first edition, RIGHT? I'm pretty sure Win 98SE (Second Edition) came with IE 5.

In my opinion, you'd been better off not to download the "critical" updates for Win 98; I do the Windows updates thing with Win XP, but I've had negative results with Win 98, just as you have. As you said, now your computer runs much slower. If you want to GET it back to it's former speed, you may need to format your hard drive and freshly install Win 98. If you do that, and if you use the computer on the Internet, I would get a router so that you have some hardware firewall protection, and also install a SOFTWARE firewall. And, of course, keep anti-virus software current and use some spyware removal tools to keep it clean.

If you downloaded - download only, not install - Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 on your other computer, could you burn it to a CD, then install it on your Win 98 computer from the CD? If you can't burn CD's, maybe you could ask someone you know to do this. You can clso order a CD from Microsoft with Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1. The cost is $5 plus tax to US residents.I think there are other issues and 64 meg. is really the functional low on RAM for 98. I vote for a reinstall AND add the updates then compare.i'm pretty sure your conputer can take IE6 because i have and even older one that runs it:
Pentium 1 120 mhz
16 mb RAM
SVGA Video
Win98SEThanks to dl65, soybean, GX1_Man, and SovietGenius for your wisdom. With my old Windows 98 computer, I now have upgraded my IE browser by going to Download.com and downloading IE 6 Service Pack 1. My mistake was trying to use Windows Update to upgrade from IE 4.01. Windows Update only delivers updates for current versions. It doesn't do a thing for upgrades. So it wasn't that my PC was too old. It was just that I was too uninformed. Now my system is up-to-date. One interesting thing, however. When I hit Start and Programs, IE 4.01 is still listed. When I went into My Computer, Program Files, and right-clicked Internet Explorer I then clicked Explore. When I got into IEXPLORE.EXE I was advised that a new version had already been installed (IE 6) and it wasn't necessary to install it again. So even though IE 6 isn't listed under Start, Programs my computer still recognizes it. So I assume there's no harm in just leaving it alone. Now I can do everything from checking email to Web surfing to even running my essential antivirus program. Just thought you'd like to know my outcome. Thanks again!

Solve : History pages not kept?

Solve : can't open "links"??

Answer» HI, guys,

Another simple question from a novice. When on a website and it has links, (I think that's what they're called) just like this site has, and you click on them to open the link or go to another website, or whatever, nothings happens. Is this something to do with my settings as I have looked at all of them and can't see anything relevant.

As an example a local pub has a website and it has keys down the left hand side which say things like : food, menu, about us, events, etc. and when I click on them nothing! However, when I do this at work they work fine.

A work colleague suggested holding down the control key and clicking but this doesn't work either.

Anyone any ideas please?

TINY :-?Do you have some sort of pop up blocking software on the problem computer? (I think your friend assumed so, as this technique will work with some of them.) Has it always been this way? If not, when did it start and what has changed?Hi, GX1_MAN

I cannot recall when this STARTED to happen unfortunately. I have AVG, AVAST, Adaware SE, Spybot, CCleaner and ewido on the computer. I have gone into tools, pop-up blocker, in IE and it is turned off. Cannot see anything in the above programmes that allows you to enable or disable pop-up blockers although in my own amateur way I must admit I cannot see what else it can be. Unfortunately I can't figure out how to correct it.

Solve : IE 6 slowly loses connection then "hangs" up?

Answer»

I have a Dell XPS stand-alone desktop with Widows 98 2nd edition and MS Office SBE. I've always had DSL. Last month I started losing my IE 6 connection - sometimes after 5 minutes - sometimes after 10 minutes, or sometimes never. It starts by slowing down making connection until it hangs up with "Cannot find page" message. I have to reboot to get it to connect again. My e-mail Outlook program doesn't lose it's connection even though IE does. I've reset all IE security and other options to default. I clean out the "temp" files and history regulary. Plus Disc Cleanup and Defrag. I've replaced the DSL modem and reinstalled the DSL software. I run the current version of Norton Anti-virus and check for updates daily. I use Ad-Aware. I've scanned with Panda. I use Registry Mechanic and BugDoc. I use Zone Alarm firewall. Popup Stopper, Window Washer. I've used the IE repair tool. I install all MS updates. All of my "tool" don't give me a clue to a problem but I suspsect it's in the browser. I hadn't installed any new software when the problem started. It seems like IE 6 had a bad day but learned to enjoy taunting me.

Can you make me smile? I'd like my white hair to return to grey! It sounds like the connection is repaired when you restart, which is a sign that the computer isn't reading the connection properly... Here's a little thing to try... Turn off the computer, and unplug your DSL/Cable modem for 30 SECONDS. Plug it back in. Wait about 20 seconds and then power the computer back on. Sometimes the modem just needs to be reset. Give it a shot.

FlameThank you. I've been doing that on a regular basis but it doens't seem to make a difference. When I make the DSL connection when I turn on the computer, I get a brief messge that it's "updating parameters," briefly SHOWS my IP address, then makes the connection.Let me ask you another question... Why are you running 98 SE on a new Dell XPS System?

FlameThanks again. It's not a new XPS - it's an older one and Windows 98 2nd edition came with the unit. I probably need a new computer but all I use it for is e-mail plus a lot of reserch on the Internet. I'm retired and watching my pennies. Your help makes me smile!Have you tried using a different browser and see if it behaves in the same manner? If it behaves in the same manner, EITHER the DSL software or Microsoft Dialup networking is screwed up.

The other thing you could try is purchasing a cheap router (linksys is good), then the router will handle the connection and you'll be connecting as if on a LAN. I've found this is USUALLY more reliable than the dialup type software that comes with DSL packages.

Good luck!Kartan, you are my hero! I downloaded Firefox but had the same problems. I installed the DSL software from a new CD-ROM but still had the same problem. I was a bit nervous about installing a router (total non-tech who can over cook boiling water). I purchased an inexpensive Linksys router and their set-up CD was so easy to follow that I had the router up and running in 20 minutes. IE is running screaming fast again. Thank you, thank you, thank you!Let me get this straight: Internet Explorer works fast on Windows 98? Holy cow! It's the sign of the apocalypse!!!

If that's the case the answer is 'no'.Would the other half of the picture by any chance contain nudity...? A link to this picture COULD help us. Step. Away. From. The. Computer. Fed.

Solve : one small question?

Answer»

well after the automatic updates, which update some security in IE also... there's a problem with my website...

well it's not really a problem. it's just that i use flash menu on my site and usually it works when you hover the mouse over it. but now it shows a square box around it with a message tag "click to activate". it's very anoying, you have to click everytime to activate the my flash menu... is there anyway to disable this or SOMETHING?I don't if there's a setting you can change in your system to stop that square box around it with a message tag "click to activate", but I think I'd be more concerned about how this is going to affect visitors to your site who have also gotten those updates that caused problem to start in your system. Have you thought about that? Maybe you need to think about changing to a different type menu.

If you visit other sites using flash (other than in menus like yours) does it DISPLAY without showing any message such as the one you're seeing with your menu? Are these updates ones you got just within the last several days? My system has prompted me to get new Windows updates, starting a fews days ago, but I haven't downloaded and installed them yet. Just WONDERING whether these updates will affect all IE users when viewing sites using Flash.it pretty much affect other flash control also, not just menu... not just my site but lots of video game's site that use flash are also affected...

and this is an update from yesterday... my bro also updates his window and this also affect his IE...

showing the same thing on flash control. seriously it's really annoying...

Can you post the URL to your site? I just installed the latest Windows updates and I have no problem viewing sites with Flash. You might find something here that would help: Flash Player Help.my site, http://www.japankore.net, hower over the flash menu...

a big game developer site

http://www.square-enix.com/

just hover the most over the flash and you'll see the box around it too.

if not then your update isn't the latest, i tested it on 3 more computer. all give the same thing after the updates. No problems viewing them here, as far as I can tell. Here's what I see:
and

I definitely do have the latest updates. As I said, I just got them earlier today. There are no more updates out there for my system. Clearly, I've got the latest.

Even though you SAY you've tested this on several computers, I think you've other issues. the flash is viewable but not active... hover your mouse over it, do you see the box around it? and let it stay for a while and you'll see the tag that says, "click to activate"If this is a browser-dependent security setting, then it's unlikely you can change something to make this work. You may need to redesign.

Have you tested your site in any browser other than IE? WIth respect, anyone who designs a web site that only works in IE, should be hung, drawn and quartered. A curse on microsoft

OK, now I see what you mean, and I agree it's annoying. And, apparently, it is the result of recent Windows Updates. I don't knoe what you can do about it; re-designing the site would be a huge task, no doubt.

However, I believe your description of it is erroneous. It's an ActiveX issue, not a Flash issue. Or, it's how you use Flash. That message, "Click to activate ...", does not appear on every occurrence of Flash when view various sites. It appears to be the use of Flash in menus or certain other uses that triggers the message.

haha, my site works on fine on netscape, firefox, and it was working fine on IE until the updates...
i usually make sure it works fine on both firefox and IE, since those are the two most used browser.

so no way to go around this?

and yeah sorry, maybe i wasn't clear. i thought it was a flash thing... to be honest i don't even know what active x is, i only know how to make flash menus with a simple program that i have..."Microsoft has acknowledged that not all Web site DEVELOPERS will have modified their pages to account for IE's new behavior -- the easiest way for developers to sidestep user activation is to call the ActiveX controls via JavaScript -- and so will also release a patch on Tuesday to delay the changes."is there any way to fix this?

i mean it's really annoying...

view this page.

http://www.airtightinteractive.com/photos/

i use that same flash gallery script for one of my site too... view it with the new updates in IE... and then view it in firefox...

see? it doesn't even work at all on IE. It was working before the upgrade.

this new thing is so lame! i find alot of problems with it.In Add/Remove Programs, you can check a box that says "Show Updates" above the file list (assuming you have XP). Now all you have to do is scroll down and find the right one. But make sure you know which is the correct update to remove; if you don't, the situation will be vaguely similar to Indy Jones and the Last Crusade. (He chose..... poorly.....)It appears to be the Security Update for Windows XP (KB912812).

Solve : Problems with Certain Websites?

Answer»

Well I use Firefox but i guess its pretty much the same question anyway... I have trouble connecting to certain sites, or when I do it has a lot of problems with loading pictures (sites such as myspace and facebook). I have ethernet on my MOTHERBOARD, and i KNOW its not a problem with the connection because on my other (much slower computer) it connects fine. I'm on a Linksys Router (not wireless) but that shouldnt be a problem. Any help is appreciated. Are you able to try a network card in this computer? Could be that the onboard ethernet is jiggered.it'd be possible but my pci slots are all full so it would be a hassle. if theres another solution (or something else i could try prior to doing that) i'd want to try that first
thanksHas it always been this way? If not what has CHANGED or happened. How about some details on your system and operating system? Any spyware/virus protection in use?my computer is
DFI n4f-dagf
Athlon 64 +3700
1 gb ram
nVidia Geforce 6600GT with 128MB

so it shouldnt be a system problem...

i have AVG free version for virus protection and run ad-aware/spybot occassionally but they seem to find the same things every time
is there another solution to these? (i may have some virii and whatnot)
I would have thought that swapping over a PCI card temporarily would be the least hasslesome thing to do. Just swap out a sound card temporarily. Easier than running bandwidth tests and hardware diagnostics. Quote

Is this a consistent pattern? Are there certain sites that absolutely will not display on this computer? If so, take a look at your hosts file. You can find it by doing a search for hosts; open it with Notepad. See whether it shows the sites you cannot access.
I also had this problem, i know i say this alot but are you on AOL? If so try changing the MTU size in your router to 1400. This sorted it out for me, anyway hope this helps. Best of luck.

its not that i can't access the websites, but on certain ones pictures wont load or it will take a very long time to navagate around it.myspace fully loads quite quickly for me & I'm on dialup, ping myspace & compare the reults.

Can you give some more details on the connecting problems & the picture problems?what often happens is it takes a very long to load pages (like personal pages) and a lot of the pictures don't appear or they show up as that little white box with the x in it... could this be a problem with my firewall or antivirus?ok so today i turned of my firewall breifly (its an nVidia firewall) and it was able to load all the pictures on these sites. but i dont wanna turn off my firewall... so if anyone knows of a free one thats good (dont wanna pay money) or a way to edit it so it will allow these that would help. thanksI use Sygate Version 5.5 Build 2710

Solve : IE won't reinstall?

Answer»

I STARTED a thread earlier with no real replies so I am simplifying all my computer errors addressing them one at a time.

IE needs to be reinstalled because the toolbar is missing and any buttons showed are not LABELED correctly, also I have to paste links in the browser.

THE ISSUE: When I try to install IE from a start up CD or download it says another instance has not finished and to reboot. I reboot and try again and I still get the same thing. Could someone please walk me through installing this and if this installs will it fix OE as well? Oh..IE and OE are not showing in the add/remove programs either

Thank you dove ........ I just went back and read your earlier posts........ It would APPEAR the best SOLUTION for you would be to wipe the hard DRIVE and reinstall your Win ME ....... or Win XP would be even better if you have at least 256mg of ram.

Solve : IE Errors and Outlook Express - PLEASE HELP?

Answer»

I realize this might be a long shot but from my FRUSTRATION with this darn computer I am going to try. My computer is running winME and the hard drive was moved from a HP to a VPremier so you GUESSED it not all the restore disks work any longer. I also have a wireless modem and router from which one is so old it took me forever to find the link online I needed to download the install files for..no disk. So I definately cannot just reformat this hard drive I must rig it like I have been doing for years.

If you are willing to help and I pray SOMEONE will, here are the issues

1. IE has errors ..I am not sure which but for a TIME it would not go online. Somehow I managed to find a virus or program called delayrun.exe whatever it was I sent it to the virus vault and now I am on however, I cannot right click, none of the desktop links will go anywhere they must be pasted into the browser. OUTLOOK AND INTERNET EXPLORER...are not listed in the add remove programs..and the tool bar in IE does not show files/favorites ect. The home and print buttons all go to different things not what they are suppose to.

2. Windows Media Player still will not work this was a problem last time I was here we fixed it and it's back again including no visuals.

3. Outlook Express will not load MSOE.DLL error,Yes I have tried to download the file with no success because the file is already on my drive.

4. All picture associations refuse to go to photoshop even though I listed it to go to that program. No thumbnail will appear and this is a huge deal for me because I work with alot of GRAPHICS. :-/

GXman something like that you are the one that usually helped me with this darn computer and remedied the problems quite quickly Frankly, I'd say you created a mess for yourself by moving your hard drive from a HP to a VPremier. Why did you do that? Did you do any research on this before deciding to do this? Was the VPremier a working system before you did this? What OS was installed on it?

Solve : Problems with IE on Win 98?

Answer»

:-? I know I have an old operating system and plan to dump it soon. But can anyone tell me why while online using DSL I always seem to get errors while clicking links that is the standard "page not Available" screen. Also many time I load a webpage and pictures many times do not come up , just a red X . I have downloaded IE 6.0 and run Trend mico virus scans daily . Any ideas while this is working so sluggishly ? every third address click or so brings up these errors !! HELP Firewall? Free from spyware? Did this always happen, or did something change recently?Perhaps the DSL SERVICE is just really poor?I had a similar problem a year ago with my 98 SE as far as the red X. In fact, everything was slowing down and I had DSL. ASSUME you have IE6. Make sure your cache is cleared by going to Tools, Options, General Tab. Hit Delete Files then check "off line content" then Okay. I had never clicked the "off line" content because I'd never saved anything for off-line use. At least as far as I knew. However, it took the computer 5 minutes to clean out those files. I thought Disk Cleanup WOULD have done it but it hadn't.

You may also have a huge number of other files you don't know about that's messing up your system in ways you can't imagine. If you have Zone Alarm or other firewall program, look for the "LOGS" section within that application and delete them. I didn't know ZA was keeping daily logs and I cleaned out 4 years worth at one time. Same thing with your anti-virus program. Check other similar programs also - many keep logs.

You can find other buried "logs" by clicking on Start, Find, then type in - with quotation marks "internet logs" and then click on "files and FOLDERS." Open up each log file or folder and see what's there - especially if it's large.

I also found out that every year or 2 my ISP changes it's DSL software. Check to make sure you have the most current version. If you have the most currnet version and the CD-ROM is over a couple of years old, get a new one and try it. In 2 instances I found that the then-new CD-ROM had degraded after 2 years and that new CD-ROM of the same software solved a lot of strange problems.

Give this a try and post whether or not it helps. Good luck!

Solve : OE folders won't import - blood on keyboard!?

Answer»

Broken finger nails and blood on my keyboard, all self inflicted! I tried to reduce the size of my Inbox and Sent Items by creating a NEW folder in Windows\Appilc data\Identities (instead of GETTING OE to create the folders), saved all the old data in these folders, but now can't open them through OE, and can't restore them THRU "import". How do I get OE to "see" my new folders? :-?What method did you use to "save" the old data? You know, I've tried so many fixes I can't really remember! I think I highlighted the emails in OE and copied them to the new folderIt sounds to me like you CREATED the new folder in Windows Explorer. Surely you didn't try and drag the emails from Outlook Express into Windows Explorer?Yes, I created a new folder in Windows Explorer. But this is the catch - I can't remember how I managed to move my messages to this folder. Certainly not drag and drop. I did highlight the messages, but couldn't copy and paste, couldn't have "Imported/Exported" as OE doesn't "see" this new folder, so there is the nub of the problem. If you exported it from OE, you should be able to import it again. What problem exactly are you having on import?I'm using Windows 98 2e, OE 6. Click File, Import, messages, browse, find the identity folder and click next, get message "The specified message store could not be opened. It may be in use by Outlook Express" = can't import itself into the same identity. Tried to create a new identity and it will import to there, but only the folders that OE can "see", and not my folder Sent Items 2006. Also tried renaming the folders but OE isn't fooled by that.
Sent Items 2006 has the data (27MB), can open it in Word (reads gobbledegook), but just can't open it in OE.If you'd like to zip the data and email it to me, I may be able to do something with it. PM me for my email address. Thanks Robpomeroy - I think you put me on track by asking exactly what the message is. I managed to copy my data to ANOTHER folder on the desktop, then emailed it to myself and hay presto, once in the outbox I saved it to disk and all is well!!
Many thanks for your time and help and kind offer of zip help ....
RaffalsVery glad you got it sorted. Sometimes just talking about a problem leads to a solution.

Feel free to come back and talk again!

Solve : Explorer crashes when I open pdf files?

Answer»

Hi guys,
whenever I attempt to open a pdf FILE my internet explorer just crashes. Can anyone PLEASE help me?
Cheers
DanAnd do you have Acrobat Reader or some other software to open it correctly loaded? What veresion of IE? has it ever worked correctly? If so what happened? etc.?

A little THIN on the details there. Ok, well the whole story goes like this...

I purchased my computer in November of last year and had major hassles with it since...and most recently just had one of its HARD drives replaced as it was faulty.
Since then I have had to reinstall ALMOST everything I had previously. Therefore, I am pretty sure I have reinstalled acrobat correctly...the up to date one (version 7) however when I was trying to re-install my internet connection it kept saying i had to restart for install of acrobat to be completed correctly....so i restarted my computer but kept getting the same message.
Previous to having my hard draft changed over i was opening pdf's without a hassle.
I have Internet explorer 6Yes, the whole story is always important for resolving problems.

Do you have Acrobat listed in Add/Remove Programs in CONTROL Panel? If so, try removing it and then reinstalling after a reboot.

You may also be interested in Foxit Reader. It is small, fast, easy on resources and free.

Solve : The Internet explorer keeps shutting itself down.?

Answer»

Any ideas why? The error message I get reads: Internet EXPLORER has encountered some problems and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. -- The thing is, it pops up every time you close out of an internet window or popup, and sometimes it comes up for no reason. It shuts down any internet pages you have open. I think the spyware we had on our computer may have changed some internet settings which makes it do this, but I don't know. This problem has been going for about a week to two weeks. And yes, we have four of the reccommended spyware scanning programs which we run regularly.Do you have SP2 for Windows XP installed? What "reccommended spyware scanning programs" are you using? Provide some info about the spyware problem you had? Why do you feel sure that you are completely rid of it?Not really sure what SP2 is, sorry. Lemme think, I know we have Spy Sweeper, Ad Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy, and... I don't know the other one off the top of my head. The problem was we had mainly a ton of popups, and things were downloaded onto our computer frequently. Every time we ran Ad Aware (before having the other programs) we got about 143+ items found. The basic spyware infestation. I know we've got the problem to a MINIMUM, as we only find tracker cookies, and under ten of those now. Is that about what you were asking for?To verify whether you have SP2, right click on My Computer and select Properties. If you have it, you'll see "Service Pack 2" under Windows XP.

How do you connect to the Internet? Dial-up? DSL/cable? Is your computer connected directly to the modem? In other words, no router?

And, what about a software firewall? Do you have one installed? Are you using Windows Firewall?

Your description of computer experience indicates you probably had a major spyware infestation. Even though you've been using spyware detection/removal tools more vigilantly lately, a major spyware infestation can not always be remedied with the tools you mentioned.

I'll be away from my computer for awhile. Will check back later. And, someone else may suggest some steps such as a HijackThis log.I have SP1. We have DSL, and I believe we have a router. Solve : IE window name reduced to first letter only?

Answer»

The Internet Explorer windows icon in the bottom tray that shows the name of each IE window I have open has suddenly decided to show me just the first letter of each window. This happened after I installed Norton Internet SECURITY 2006 last night. I uninstalled NIS, but still have the problem. Can someone provide an answer? Symantec couldn't:-? :-? Thanks!Another Norton success story.

Try the full uninstall as directed on the Symantec site. Their virus is hard to remove!

If that doesn't fix it after a reboot, then you may want to try a system restore to a time before this wonderful software addition to see if that will correct it.

Are you sure your system is clean? What protection are you using other than Norton? Thanks for the response. I actually found a fix - INADVERTENTLY. Somehow my nervous fingers had generated 2 Yahoo toolbars. I uninstalled both of them and lo and behold the IE window names reappeared! Now I have to reinstall NIS. It sounds LIKE you're not much of a Symantec fan - I don't disagree, their service sucks and I love it when their own Uninstall can't uninstall PREVIOUS version of their own programs.I am also definitely not a fan of add on toolbars - any of them!
