Solve : Internet Explorer Error Message?

Answer»

I have MICROSOFT Windows XP Professional Version 2002. An Intell Pentium processor with 448 MHz, 320 MB of Ram. The problem has been random but when I try to open programs on the internet (example, delmarlearning for school) I get an error message "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close". At the bottom are two options, "Send error report" "Don't send". I did a defrag last night and that didn't help.......Why would you think defragging would do anything??

I'm not sure what you mean by "open programs on the internet". Can you please explain? And see if the same thing happens with another browser (ie, Firefox, Opera, etc). You probably mean a student platform on your browser by 'internet programs', mm?
I have one myself. It's one of those college platforms where users LOG onto.
I would look into what Delmar is made of. Perhaps you need to INSTALL Java for some plugins.

Also, try a DIFFERENT browser. =)"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close"
I'd travel to our malware FORUM for health check.

You need more RAM too.

Solve : IE7/OWA issue?

Answer»

I have a USER that cannot send an attachment with OWA. We can create a NEW message, and attach the file. When you hit send, it disappears like it sent the message, but it NEVER gets delivered and it's not in the sent items folder. I've tried my account and I get the same result on his computer, which leads me to believe this is an IE issue. Any ideas? This computer is running XP.OWA = OUTLOOK Web Access.

Solve : Tweaking IE7 to IE8?

How much of an added cost projection(% wise) would there be in tweaking a site that is compatible with IE7 to also being compatible with IE8? I don't understand the question...

Actually, no. IE8 displays things "RIGHT", from what I've seen. As long as you add a DOCTYPE to your pages it should work. Solve : Firefox Bookmark Toolbar?

Answer»

Is there a way to edit/rename the websites that one puts into the Bookmark Toolbar. I have tried Right Clicking my Mouse to see if it WOULD BRING up a Menu like the one in IE 8 that allows you to edit Favorites in the Favorites Toolbar, but it doesn't SEEM to have that option. Is there another place to look for the means to edit? I'd like to shorten up the NAMES so that I can GET more items on the Toolbar. ThanksRight-click, select Properties. Edit "Name".Thank you. I NEVER would have figured that one out. Works just great!

Solve : Timed out??

Answer»

Call...just hit *67 before you dial so the telemarketers don't drive you batty... Hey I didn't even think about that. I already EMAILED them with all of my contact info. They should be contacting me shortly. Or tomorrow. I'll see what they say. If I don't like it, i'll ask that I be removed from their call lists etc.Who is the local cable company? If they have upgraded their outside plant in the last few YEARS they may be better than they were then.

The cable company here in town is St. Joseph Cable Vision. The actual ISP is NPG Cable. So all business is DONE through Cable Vision. Everybody I know says the service is just like it was 5 years ago. When you inquire about the Business DSL plan explain you are just unsatisfied with the local providers...ask if there's a break for a SOHO business...remember...you're a landscaper.

Hi.

If you still need help, please do the following:

Please download the latest version of Kaspersky GetSystemInfo (GSI) from Kaspersky and save it to your Desktop.
Please close all other applications running on your system.

Please double click GetSystemInfo.exe to open it.

Click the Settings button.

Set it to Maximum

IMPORTANT! Then please click Customize - choose Driver / Ports tab and uncheck Scan Ports.

Click Create Report to run it.

It will create a ZIP folder called GetSystemInfo_XXXXXXXXXXXXXX.zip on your Desktop. Please upload the folder to Kaspersky GSI Parser and click the Submit button.

Please copy and paste the url of the GSI Parser report (not the log) in your next reply.

I will check out the log to see if there is anything blocking the toolbar from appearing, or if you have MALWARE.

My middle mouse BUTTON does both. I can click on links to open them in a new tab and I can easily scroll by holding down the middle button and dragging. Or of COURSE just rotating the wheel.

Solve : Is there a way to check what the correct browser settings are suppose to be??

Answer»

Trying to figure out what is suppose to be checked when I right click on IE and then click on Properties and Advanced.
It has the Settings
like for Accessibility, Browsing, Underline Links, Http 1.1 Settings, International, Microsoft VM, Multimedia, Printing, Security, and so on.

Especially with all the viruses, hacking etc.. just want to make sure we have everything set correct.
Also, one of the weird things we keep having problems with on both computers whenever using IE is that we keep losing the taskbar. Not sure what is causing that either. Seems to mostly happen when we click the login button it brings up another window and then that is when we lose everything. So, like is there some settings someplace to tell it to do the width and height or something? I seem to also see a page thing and tools buttons, zoom, not sure if that is something we need to change?
Thanks
Okay, your post is a little confusing. First, in Internet Options - Privacy - Advanced - Settings - I'd suggest you accept first party & session cookies but should block 3rd party cookies. Other than that any changes are pretty much up to you. More important is your AV and Malware software. As for the other problems you are having, I don't really follow. We are trying to find a list of the correct settings for Internet Explorer.
We do not have what you are talking about.
When we right click on Internet Explorer, and then choose Properties, and then go to Advanced.
There is a big long list of categories, and we are trying to find out what is suppose to be checked under each of the categories.
Here are the categories we keep seeing.
Accessibility
Browsing
Underline Links
Http 1.1 settings
International
Microsoft VM
Multimedia
Printing
Search from the address bar
Security

We don't understand what all needs to be checked and not checked. Don't understand what ALOT of it means.
Under browsing SECTION some of the things we have checked is Disable script debugging(IE),
Disable script debugging(other), Enable FTP Folder View, Enable Page transitions,
Theres others checked too, but hopefully this will help to understand what we are talking about.

With all the problems we have had from the viruses and spyware and people hacking us.
We just want to make sure the settings are all correct and we don't know what they are suppose to even be.

Sorry about any confusion.

You don't need to worry about these.there are no "Correct" and "incorrect" settings. If that was the case they wouldn't be user-changable to begin with.We have no idea what half of this stuff even means.
Whenever we try things on our own, we always mess it up worse.
This is why we are trying to find out, is there a site or somewhere that shows the setup instructions of what needs to be MARKED and not marked?
Or can we just go through and check everything?
One of the settings in here it says:
Use Passive FTP (for firewall and DSL modem compatibility)
What will happen if we do or don't have this marked?
Also, this one here we don't understand either.
Http 1.1 settings:
Use http 1.1
Use http 1.1 through proxy connections

So, many others too we don't understand. If this isn't the correct place to go for this kind of help, is ok. Please let us know though so we can try and find someone who can help with this.

leave them all alone.Sorry, what exactly do you mean when you say leave them all alone?
Do you mean to uncheck them?
or is there a setting somewhere that is suppose to say leave them all alone?

I use to understand this stuff better, but don't anymore since my health isn't doing good anymore. Caused me to forget so much in life.
My mom doesn't understand any of it.

So, we are guessing there is no sites to go to that will just list all the things that are suppose to have checks by them?
Since we keep getting hacked. Maybe this is why we keep getting hacked, because the hacker has changed some of these settings.
We don't even know the password to our router anymore. They changed that.
That is why we would just like to go to a site and look at what the settings are suppose to be. It would be easier for us to understand and do it this way.
It just seems for everything out there- software, and other devices there are certain settings that need to be correct for things to work properly.
At least some things come with a manual on how to set things up. But if you don't have or missing certain things or a site that tells these things it seems now a days too. For our Internet Settings we have to go to a website to do them. But then if something goes wrong and you can't get online, if you mess something up by screwing with the settings, and then can't get online anymore to figure out what you messed up.

You can choose Reset at the bottom as Allan already suggested. (A good thing to do if you have been messing with the check marks.)
Choose medium or higher setting on your privacy tab.
Keep an updated antivirus and firewall running.
Run Superantispyware and Malwarebytes weekly or bi-weekly.
AmyR7,

You seem to have very bad luck, with all the viruses and hacking, don't you? When you obtained possession of this laptop, was it used, or did you buy it brand new?Quote
Sorry, what exactly do you mean when you say leave them all alone?

It means don't check them and don't uncheck them. Leave them the way they are now.

Reset Internet ExplorerAfter reading this, maybe this is what is causing our passwords to not work anymore.
If we hit reset, one of the things we see on that page that it resets is Passwords.
We just got alot of this straightened out with sites we use that got messed up.
Couldn't log into things, and also my mom's information got into my accounts too.
One of the sites I use, it had the wrong email address in for my account, and it almost caused me to have to get a totally new email address too(which would be just another account to keep up with the information for), because of when I was trying to put in the correct one, it kept telling me it was invalid even though it is not invalid.
That is a big reason we do not want to hit reset, unless absolutely necessary. The last time we did this, we ended up having to call a repairman out, because of being locked out of the computer. And he broke other things such as the scanner and printer, and we don't want to have to have this happen again.

Both mine and mom's computers are desktops, Dell, and both brand new. The very first time my computer got hacked was years ago when having to get AIM for an online computer class that I had just signed up for. Something called an 'MBKWBar toolbar' came through and put itself in IE and broke it. On my mom's computer with her IE, hers has been broken for awhile too, everytime we opened it, we would get taken to sites automatically.
My computer had Mozilla, but had to get rid of it due to problems of it being hacked and everytime we open it, it would cause everything to become distorted. My mom's computer still has Mozilla, but is now seeming to fail. Certain websites we use do not work properly with Mozilla.

Just got the newest version of IE on both computers, and seems to maybe be working except for a few things, such as things not displaying properly, and looking at these things, looks like maybe that is something checked wrong that is causing it. But we don't understand what some of these things mean.
Some of the things talks about Zooming, text, all that stuff. Sounds like something there, but we don't understand all that stuff. We have the same problems not just with our computer but with this stuff on all electronics we have(if you remember about all that DVD stuff) and things not displaying properly when we try and watch tv.
So, with all the problems we have been through and looks like we are getting closer to things working better.
Yes, we are going to just leave things the way they are now, but are scared to since people have been hacking us. They may have marked something that they know would cause worse problems.
Is why we just are looking for a list of the things that they recommend to have checked.

Also, yes, both computers are loaded with protection. All the things that cruisin702 mentioned we have. Plus a bunch of other things too my brother-in-law who knows more on computers than we do, put on our computers. Since my brother-in-law lives a good bit away and of course due to work and all, not sure when he would be able to come over again. Which yeah, we could email him and ask for a site that has what needs to be checked if you all don't know of a site?

Just trying to understand how to use everything.
The other day though not sure if we got hit or what. Maybe the stuff helped, because yes, we did get taken to another site automatically while logged into account on this one site we use, that everyone else who uses the site was taken to other sites too, and some people had even worse things happening to them. Which with us, the only thing that happened was this message that was on the screen is making us think maybe all this protection we have is helping because it said something about the site was blocked.
Here is the exact message:
"Reported Attack Site!
This web site at sweetlemongrass.com has been reported as an attack site and has been blocked based on your security preferences.
Attack sites try to install programs that steal private information, use your computer to attack others, or damage your system.
Some attack sites intentionally distribute harmful software, but many are compromised without the knowledge or permission of their owners."

So, does that sound like the protection is working?

It sounds like it protected you from that one website.

The reason I asked if the PC's were new or used, is because if they were new, which they are, the list of settings should be the way you would want them to be. From the sound of it, you've already been infected before though, and it resulted in those settings being changed.

I would reset the settings BACK to default, run your virus/spyware/malware programs, and leave it all alone. If any threats are brought to your ATTENTION, then you should take the appropriate actions.Quote from: t_blake07 on January 28, 2010, 05:37:11 PM
From the sound of it, you've already been infected before though, and it resulted in those settings being changed.
Half correct.
So, then after we had hit reset, we have messed all this stuff up.
We are having problems getting the settings back to what they should be.
It reset all our accounts doing this. We are still having problems getting them straightened out. So, then we lose them, or they charge us again for a new account and can't close the old one because of things getting all messed up and getting the wrong information in, such as for some of my accounts seem to have my mom's details in them or other ways around. Classmates charged us again due to this.
So, don't want to hit it again and then have to get them fixed again.
So, that is why we are looking for a list of what is suppose to be marked and not marked.

Solve : Firefox 3.5.7 suddenly busy on some process?

Answer»

This is odd. I upgraded FF to 3.5.7 not that long ago but more recently - like last couple of days - all the time it is open I hear sounds indicating a process opening and then closing after a few seconds. This occurs approx every minute or less. If however I run FF 3.0.16, my last version, this does ot happen.

I have also had an upgrade to Norton Internet Security but that too was way before this problem/annoyance anyways. So - nothing comes to mind added or CHANGED that coincides with this irritating deal in FF 3.5.7.

I closed everything except this FF version and also closed all ''live'' tabs that were web connected - I also stopped traffic - an option on my bandwidth monitor - so FF sits there with one tab open running an offline page - still this crazy ACTIVITY!

I inspected all running processes for when this thing occurs but only thing I could spot was a brief change in CPU idle percentage - nothing else could be seen to change. So - any ideas? Is this browser SPECIFIC - anyone had any issues? And yet initially 3.5.7 seemed not to do this. Other thing - any other way to track down a mystical process that only lasts a few seconds?Try upgrading to FF 3.6. In earlier versions of FF I had some memory and CPU issues when it was left on for a week or so. Ver 3.6 seems to have solved some of those problems.Thx for reply - I'll try that soon as I can but for now will MAKE use of 3.0.16 as an interim.Update ....

Just put 3.6 on and - knocking on wood .... seems no repeating process. Here's hoping it stays OK.

I do have long spells between reboots and so maybe there was a memory/CPU issue after some time with 3.5.7.

Despite that - I'd be interested to know a way to track down an itinerant mystery process like I described! Thx again for the input.DLoad install and test Process Explorer.....did i mention it's FREE ? ?Thx Patio - I seem to remember trying that some time ago but IIRC found it was rather hungry for CPU time. May well try it again altho this process I referred to was such short duration it seemed hard to track down.

Fortunately having moved up to FF 3.6, the problem seems gone.I'm suprised you observed that...Process Explorer runs in the background and takes up hardly any system resources at all...
Where did you DLoad it from ? ?Forget where I got it but maybe it was the time it took to get initialized - I just seem to recall something about it being super intensive that put me off using it. RECKON I may well try it again. Thx anyways.

So many opinions, touted as fact. Very little in the way of solving the problem though.

There should be an IQ test interrupting the 'Post' feature in the forums.Actually, I've long been a proponent of an IQ test being required before anyone can purchase a computer What do want to do...ruin the economy ? ?It's a law of computing: the moment some otherwise INTELLIGENT people sit down in front of a computer, their brain TURNS to mush. I once had to try to explain to somebody what a left-click was, since they insisted on right-clicking everything.

I ended up describing a left-click as a wrong-click. somehow wrong and right are opposites but not right and left.

Or:

Usually it means some add-on(s) is giving you problem.

Close Firefox. Go Start>All Programs>Mozilla Firefox, click on Mozilla Firefox (safe mode). Same thing? Now the problem is over,I can shut it down and restart it as often as I want.
How do I transfer all my settings from the bad to the good F-Fox???(Vers.3.6).
I hope it is possible...

Thank you very much for the quick help,I wish you all the best (From Holland) :Eric...

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]If you're able to get into Safe Mode version of Firefox often disabling *all* the add-ons will fix this type of issue. Usually these problems are caused by incompatibilities with add-ons.Quote
Now the problem is over
In order to help you with your question about transferring settings we need to know what exactly you did to solve the issue.I did exactly what you said.I ran F-Fox in safe mode...Of COURSE I lost my settings ....But I am a step further(thank you!!!),in safe mode it does run normally...
Now I must try to find out how I can "transplant" my settings from my "bad" F-Fox to my "good"(safe) F-Fox.....
If you can give me any suggestions,I would be very thankfull...
I have customized F-Fox totally to my needs and would love to keep my settings !!!
Is there a way I can "transplant" my settings (And extensions,plug-ins,add-ons ect.ect.).
Greetings from Holland:Eric............

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]Disabling the add-ons will allow you to test to see if they're the cause of your issue and can be re-enabled. This suggestion was just to see if they were the cause of the issue. If it works I'd click the check for updates button and MAKE sure they're all up-to-date and then do a process of ELIMINATION and enable one at a time until you find the culprit causing the load issues. You didn't lose anything.
If you start Firefox in normal mode, you'll see your all add-ons are still there.
This is what you have to do.

Start Firefox in normal mode.
Manually disable all add-ons, except for ONE.
Shut FF down.
Went OK?
If so, restart FF and enable next add-on.
Shut FF down.
Did OK?
If so, restart and re-enable next add-on.....and so on until you'll find the culprit.

Main suspects - toolbars.I understand...I have to "keep fishing" till I find the bad one....
That`s smart,thanks a lot...I`ll try that...

Thanks again,greetins:Eric...............

I don't use IE so i'm no HELP there but i do know there's a way to backup Favorites.

Same as above for Outlook and OE...i don't use them...Soybean or Dusty or another Outlook expert may be along shortly...
Email info? As in passwords, etc.? I think there may be a cookie backup-er...somewhere. Otherwise, you will need to manually type in your password and click the remember me button. Quote from: Helpmeh on February 03, 2010, 06:07:50 PM

True. In any case, one should have their email's password remembered, or at least recorded/written down. Yeah nevermind. Thanks for the input though guys.In windows mail you can select "EXPORT" in the file menu to export your CONTACTS and messages. Be sure to make a folder for them before exporting. If you just export to a volume you end up with a list of contact FILES that you then have to put into a folder.(hope that makes sense) Then you can import them back in the same way. IE has import and export that works the same way.
Vista has a backup UTILITY in Control Panel that creates a backup .bin file of just about everything but I have never tried to restore from it so I don't know if it's a all or none deal or exactly how it works.

Solve : ff bookmarks?

Answer»

I have version 3.6 of firefox

How do I put in my BOOKMARKS from a certain date without replacing my current ONES? Put in bookmarks from where? He probably means those:
%appdata%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xyz.default\bookmarkbackups\bookmarks-xyzDate.json

So he wants to MERGE the bookmarks from say, a month ago, with the current ones, without overwriting the current ones. =)

You probably can find tons of information at Yahoo Help Central. They've been making lots of changes recently.

think you i will try it . and i am sorry about the 2 post the next time i will go to you

have a bless one

yahoo help central say Oops! This LINK appears to be broken. what do i do.

I don't know why that link didn't work but you should be able to access Yahoo Help Central from a link on your Yahoo home page. Have you looked there by clicking on the Help button?

Yahoo is probably requiring you to log-on as a security precaution to protect your personal settings. Quote from: MARYBOO on February 01, 2010, 09:15:05 PM

Yahoo has tightened security.

They used to let you stay SIGNED in, but now require you to sign in over again frequently.

They did put a box you can mark under your user name and password that says:

Same here.
I see nothing whatsoever on that page pertaining to facebook or twitter. And, why would you even mention that page? It's not a page you would normally go to; it's a HELP page, which you said nothing about until your last post. Your posts preceding the last one seemed to imply you were talking about the Yahoo home page and/or your page for accessing your email via web browser.

When ever I log on to My.Yahoo page on my laptop, I GET a message @ the bottom of the page to add new aps to my home page. On my desk top we never get that. on the laptop also if I click to keep logged in it takes me back to the last web-site I visited. If I log out and need to log in again I get the message about new FEATURES for my home page....last night on my desk top the bookmarks on the home page will no longer load. I needed to download the new tool bar. The last time Firefox upgraded it said the Yahoo tool bar was not compatible with the upgraded version of FF7 so I removed it from both computers now I am GETTING messages saying it is recommended to download the new tool bar so we can get our bookmarks. I guess I will end up going back to MSN which I do not want to do. Does anyone know if Netscape is still available and or is it compatible with fire fox without having to get the Apple Software add-on?

I have run my anti-virus software and Mal-ware detection .....I use Panda Global and have never had a problem I ran a system scan on the desk Top and I just did the Lap Top before I logged on today. Any ideas. I have had Norton and McAfee but I seem to have better luck with Panda.Quote from: w6pea on October 31, 2011, 04:11:49 PM

I don't even want to fathom the confusion of ideas that could lead to this question.I just checked FF for upgrades. The ABP (little red Stop-sign bottom right hand corner status bar) had an upgrade available, which I for some reason didn't get notification about and it didn't download automatically, I just downloaded the software upgrade. I will try and log out and then log back in....MAYBE that will do away with the advertisement or application things but now if that gets cleared up then what to do about the book marks maybe just import all of them into the unclassified bookmarks on the Fire Fox Tool Bar Menu. Yes, but it also has been HAPPENING when I sign into http://my.yahoo.com

Since Ad Block Plus upgrade the software all of these pop up ads went away. Also now on the lap top the book marks on the left side of the front page of my Yahoo if you push refresh they go back into alphabetical order.

This link is also blocked now ||l.yimg.com/a/i/us/my/mw/th/sky/*

So if you guys think I'm trying to run a scam so be it. I asked a legitimate question I may have come off on the wrong side but when you are poed by something so be it. I guess I will just try to fix it myself. Sorry I even bothered to ask....I guess the sanctimonious have won out. I will just eat a pound of kosher salt and consider the source.

On my Lap top I used my recovery disk and start from scratch.

Okay.....
For those of you that think I was trying to run a scam. I uninstalled everything right down to my os.....I reinstalled everything. I solved my own problem with no thanks to the ones in the click !

The web page now works fine. Nada problems. I ran a Spyware/Malware scan......with Panda Global Protection. I came up with firewall conflicts Windows trying to run with Panda Firewall installed.

Thanks for notifying us that you solved your problem.

WELL, since my setting in my Windows 7 SYSTEM is still at the default 5 hours for Check images, the issue didn't seem to cleared up yet. If that were the issue, then changing that setting to be a shorter time should resolved it but ST has tried that and apparently that setting change did not resolve the issue.

But, I agree ST seems to have the best clue so far to what may be going on here:

Solve : establishing a LAN conection?

Answer»

My main computer is connected to a router and cable, This is how we get internet. My second computer (in a different location) is a new Gateway with built in wifi. When we installed the antenna on it, we got internet without having an adapter (like we did with the former computer).
I have an EMBROIDERY machine than FORMERLY we connected to the second computer with a serial cable. Since the new computer has only USB ports, we cannot do this (unless we get an adapter for that cable). However, when we bought the emb machine, we got the license for a LAN connection. My manual instructs to connect the emb machine to a router with a ethernet cable, then another ethernet cable to my computer (which we do have on the Gateway). Is this necessary? I've tried this and it won't work. Can I connect the emb machine directly to the computer using an ethernet cable and it will pick up the built in connection? An embroidery machine??? with a serial/LAN cable? Wow...
It should work-I think your embroidery machine works in a server/client sort of way, KIND of like remote desktop-you should be able to connect it through your router and leave your (new) computer connected with WiFi because your computer already has a private IP address on the router.
Direct connection to your computer? I don't think it will work... the 169.254.X.X addresses are not shared in a domain...
It would really help if you posted the details of how your embroidery machine works, including make and model. My emb machine is a Tajima NEO single head. Another question: the router I have is several years old, a LLynksis (sp?). Could it not be compatable with windows 7?Linksys. All routers are compatible with all computers with an ethernet port. Several Years old is not a problem-mine is 5 years old and running without a Hitch.
It would help if you posted the make and model of your router so we can allow your emb. machine to communicate with your PC through a specific port.If you are having difficulties in establishing a LAN connection:

Solve : Laptop = halfway broken! :( PLEASE help!?

Answer»

Okay. It all started yesterday.
-I opened up firefox and it automatically updated itself.
-then when it was done updating, no pages would load on it saying "unable to connect; if your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that firefox is permitted to access the web."
-I tried using IE and the wifi is working properly for that. (also works on my iPod and the other computers in the house)
-I had three different anti virus things, all for free: norton, mcafee, and avast!. I tried to do the firewall thing where you add firefox the list of okay programs or whatever but I couldn't FIND anything to do that for on any of them.
-so I figured the problem was just firefox.
-I went on IE and downloaded google chrome (b/c IE sucks and I don't want to just use that).
-chrome downloaded alright, but it wouldn't load anything either! "unable to access network"
-so I got super annoyed and figured since the problem was with firewalls, I should just take down the walls.
-I uninstalled all three of my anti virus programs.
-restarted the laptop.
-STILL chrome and firefox aren't working at all but IE is perfectly fine.
-so now I tried to re-download mcafee, since nothing is working to fix my problem and obviously I can't go without anti virus.
-now I'm trying to download mcafee and it says: "download cannot continue. Your mcafee software download cannt continue b/c either there's a problem with your Internet connection or the mcafee download server is unavailable. To fix this, make sure your pc is connected to the Internet or wait a few moments for the serve to BECOME avaiable, then try again".
-I have tried again. It is not working.
-also I tired another anti virus, that couldn't download completely either!
-I'm stuck. I only have IE and no anti virus protection. PLEASE help me figure out what I should do!!! Im so desperate.
-also if it matters, I have an acer laptop I think from 2009, with Windows 7. I have NEVER had problems like this before.
-and I just reinstalled firefox and it's still not working.
-just saying, I'm typing this from my iPod, so my wifi definitely not the problem. Quote

Does this statement mean that you are running 3 different antivirus's concurrently on the laptop? If so, pick the one you like/trust the most and have that by itself. The only thing close to concurrent antivirus that I use is Malwarebytes in addition to my antivirus as a double check.

I'd start with a clean rebuild after getting data off of it and see how it acts. Then go from there. Also I have had some issues with Firefox since the latest update where if I leave the browser open for an hour while doing other things and go back to Firefox it acts unresponsive, so I have to force close it. I havent done research into any bugs with latest version yet, but find it odd that before the latest auto update everything was fine and now after the browser is left idle for a long period it becomes unresponsive.Um... I was. I SAID I actually *uninstalled them alll. So now I have NO anti virus and I tried re-downloading one of them and Im not able to. That's part of the problem I'm having. Are you connecting to a home network and by wired or wireless? If you were able to install and uninstall antivirus software then look for the installers most probably found on your drive. After installing, connect again to the network and try updating. To check on certain sites problem loading, ping the site first while connected to the internet. Run CMD by going to Start - Click Run on XP, type cmd/On Vista and 7 type cmd on Search programs and files - Enter. Type ping facebook.com (replace the website with the sites you cannot access) Enter. Is there a reply or request timed out? How MANY Packets are Received, Sent, Loss?
my network is wireless and it otherwise works fine on every other computer in the house.

i did the ping thing for google, yahoo, and tumblr and this is what came up:

Your ping results indicate your computer is connecting to the Internet, which is consistent with your comment that you can connect with IE. You uninstalled all anti-virus programs but what's the situation regarding firewalls? Are you running more than one, like you were with antivirus software? What firewall(s) are you using?I just have the Windows firewall that like, comes with the computer, I guess? But I don't know, when I go to the security thing from the control panel and click on firewall it says it's turned off. And then I click turn on and it doesn't really do anything....? And that little icon by the clock menu thing, that says "slove pc issues" or SOMETHING.... It'll say the firewall is turned off and then I'll click on turn on and it just sits there not doing anything. Soooo I don't really know for sure if it's on or off or what. Open Control Panel and this click on System and Security, and then, under Window Firewall, click on Check firewall status. What does it show?It says:
Home or work (private) networks - not connected
Public networks - connectedWhat does it show for "Windows Firewall state"?Uhm, it just says all this when I click on firewall:
"help protect your computer with windows firewall
Windows firewal can help prevent blah blah blah...
These settings are being managed by vendor app mcafee personal firewall
Learn how to enable firewall in your computer (it's a link, but when I click on it it just tells me how to uninstall or change a program...)
Home or private networks - not connected
Public - connected"

Then there's stuff on the left sidebar that say
"allow a program or feature through firewall
Change notification setting
Turn firewall on or off
Restore defaults
Advanced settings
Troubleshoot my network"
But for some reason it only let's me click on the last two links. The others are bold and un-clickable. Quote from: aliceisbored on October 15, 2011, 08:34:11 PM

Solve : cannot connect to internet.?

Answer»

Hello
yesterday i was playing a game and i lost connection to the internet. When i tried to log BACK on it said no internet connection and there is a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in the middle over the connection bars. This is only for the connection at home, i can connect to the net with my at my GIRLFRIENDS house and also thru my verizon wireless access, but use of that is limited and i do have some work i need to get done is there any way to fix this?
Have you tried the universally excepted 'first try' method of 'switching the router and computer off for 5 minutes, then switching back on' ??Not for 5 minutes no, ill give it a shot!Ok so that WORKED...i RECONNECTED and it still says no internet access with the yellow caution symbol but i can surf the web and open e-mail and stuff i can do my work now for sure. and idea why it still says no internet access? And thank you verry much!
You really need to provide more information ??

Does it the connection work better with an Ethernet cable ??Ok so after a while the yellow sign went away and now it says internet access. Well whatever happened after the 5 min works so thank you so much!!!!

P.S. I love you
Glad your sorted !! Ok there is a router in the other room connected to a desktop with they yellow LAN cord , and i am here on my hp notebook connected to it by wireless. your fix worked for me i don't know what else i need to say lol. thank you thank you thank you thank you?
If its working fine, then you need to say NOTHING.

But it might of made things easier, if you provided, what OS your using (windows 7, XP, vista), make and model of wireless router (you only mentioned Verizon), your notebook make and model (just 'hp' isnt really enough) etc etc

Solve : Something Different? Ebay thinks Im someone else????

Answer»

Hi and thank you for looking at this thread.

I have a really different problem, for which I can not find a result (so far). Maybe someone can help me?

I have an Ebay account. Used for quite some years. My friend also has an account and he has used my computer at different times to sell stuff.

My problem is that this computer, (desktop, Win XP Pro SP3, Dell, had recent problem with MSI, now fixed and works well. (Thank you everybody for your help)), see's my requests at Ebay, to open items in a new window or tab (F/Fox), as my friends ID.

Even though of course I am logged on to the Ebay site, the new items often ( NOT ALWAYS) come up with his Ebay username in the new window. All the operations such as saving item to a list, comes up with my list designs, (I have several) such as "New stuff to look at", "Best stuff to buy", "Good value stuff", and so on, for example.

So Im thinking that, this is actually my computer, that has the problem with identification, rather than Ebay.

So somewhere in my desktop's memory, my computer is getting confused with the two different usernames somehow??

Can I search it out and delete the other ID at all??
Holy smoke where would I even look for something like that?

I hope I have explained this particular problem correctly.

I must admit it sounds rather confusing just trying to read it back to myself. ( nothing new with that ).

Thanks for your consideration and possible solutions.
ImnoGuru.
You both used the same browser, right? I suggest installing CCleaner and run it's Cleaner (click the button labeled Cleaner, on left column). If you're using Internet Explorer, select the Windows tab in the Cleaner panel and check all boxes in the Internet Explorer section, and then run the Cleaner. If using a different browser, click the Applications tab and check all boxes in the section for your browser and then run Cleaner.

Note: The standard free CCleaner download is bundled a Yahoo! toolbar, as I RECALL. But, you will see an option to un-select the toolbar shortly after starting the CCleaner installation. So, do that unless you really want the toolbar. To be more specific, it sounds like you are having cookie problems. Especially with certain things on the site showing as yours and others showing as his. As suggested, a good cookie cleaner should take care of that. You can likely find your cookies, either by looking in some of the temp folders in your internet browser's program directory or under your user profile temp folders, or you can likely find cookie settings somewhere within the browser settings. In Internet Explorer, it is located with the browser history settings, but not sure on other browsers.

Setting your computer to delete all cookies on exit will cause some annoyance (websites don't "remember you" and automatically log you in) but it is the most secure method of making sure issues like you are experiencing now don't happen. You could also avoid it by having your buddy log in to the computer with a guest account or another created user account. Then his cookies will be his and yours will be yours. Hi Raven19528 and soybean. Thanks for the reply, sorry I haven't been able to get back to you till now.

Yes we both used the same computer to log in one day and although it doesn't come up often, it does come up at the most annoying of times. (like when I want to sell something and SOMETIMES when I am bidding.. most annoying in the last 10 seconds..... Hahaha)

Soybean,, I use FF mainly, don't really have a use for IE. (Main reason is password issues for me. IE wont go to the site before you have to select to remember the password, where FF does and you can tell if your password is correct before saving it.) I suppose that is just PERSONAL preference stuff.

Anyway.... CCleaner then. Ok. I will download it and see what CCleaner does and how I can use it to cure my problem. It sounds like a cookie cleaner, I think I had it a while ago but deleted it. ( I don't think I used it) Thanks I'll try it this time.

Raven19528 hi, that sounds very logical that it is a cookie issue, only with certain aspects of the Ebay site.
Tracking down, the where, on the site will be the hardest. I thought it might have been them at their end. Seems like you both say that it most probably my cookies getting confused.

I dont really want to set my browser to delete all cookies on exit. He is not very likely to use my computer any time soon that I know of. So I will try to locate and isolate just those ones for the time being.

Wish me luck and thanks for the info. ImnoGuru.Just been researching CCleaner and it really does a lot of things.
I don't necessarily want all of that done though.

I just want this EBay problem to go away... I have never run this program and don't know what it will do if I just click GO.

Can I just select the Ebay cookies and delete the ones I want to, or does CCleaner just wipe the lot?

Thanks.Re: CCleaner, I suggest you click the Appliications tab in the Cleaner component of CCleaner and check all boxes under Firefox, click the Analyze button, and take a look at what CCleaner identified for cleaning. If this seems too aggressive, you might take a step by step approach. To do that, you could try checking, say, just the first three items for Firefox in CCleaner and running it. Then, try going to eBay with Firefox. If you still have the problem, then run CCleaner again and select more of the options for Firefox, and so forth. If you go through cleaning all items under Firefox and that still has not resolved the problem, we'll have to explore other tactics. Ah yes. Thanks soybean for that. Just what I wanted, a slow methodical and progressive solution to this, that I can control and test as I go.

I did some research from other sites about ccleanear, and a lot of their comments were only broad as to what ccleaner does and were very misleading.

An excerpt from this site.

mickliq December 27, 2010 at 08:04:10 Pacific

"CCleaner deletes garbage & garbage only. When it was 1st released it was called "Crap Cleaner" but I guess that name offended some people so it was changed to CCleaner. When you 1st open it, there's a list of the types of files it deletes in the left column. You'll find that there's nothing there that's critical, it's all "crap". It's safe to delete everything it finds."
So not really a glowing rendition of the product.

I'll trust that the way we are going to do this is the best way. OK.Just don't run the registry cleaning aspect of CCleaner.CCleaner is pretty much The standard Windows disk cleanup with a few bells tacked on, as well as a much better User Interface.

Because I like to spam my website, I actually "studied" the standard Windows Disk Cleanup tool here, to try to dispel a lot of myths surrounding disk cleanup's special "/sageset" and other parameters.

Using CCleaner and pressing "analyze" will tell you exactly what it will be removing before it removes it. Obviously, everything that will be removed is fully configurable. Honestly I don't know what the problem is.Thanks for the hand holding while I went with these suggestions.

I ran the ccleaner and so far I haven't had any poor returns from my Ebay requests.

It seems to have worked. (to date anyway). It did as suggested, remove some of my history of websites that I visit regularly, but so far none that aren't missed or that I'm unable to find again.

Thanks too Quantos, I didn't run the reg cleaner.. (hmmm yet) Do I really need to? Not really.. I just wanted this FRUSTRATION with Ebay to go away,

Honestly I don't know what the problem is.

Having never run the program before, I was uncertain as to what the results might have been.
I.M.H.O. it is better to ask first, than jump right in and perhaps cause more problems than I had.

P.S. Nice website you have. It has a lot of interesting features and well laid out. Thanks. Thanks friends for the help here.

I don't seem to have the identity problem with ebay any more. (so far).
So lets see how long it lasts then.
By and large I'd say CURED.

Thanks Interesting tidbit: every once in a while, while googling something, I will actually get results from my site. And I was "lucky" enough to get absolutely slammed on the 1st of this month because some of my graphics work was recognized by a popular blog about their subject. The Ebay issue has been very consistent so far. I have just sold 5 more items and had no issues dancing back and forward through the selling, revising, buying and or editing sections and so on..

I lost a few web addresses from the (mozilla) address suggestions bar at the top, but nothing so distressing that I cant fix or find them again, (so far), but who's to say that wasn't a Mozilla update that caused that?

BC_Programmer, I wish I had the knowledge of how to do a lot of those type of things. I have a website now that my brother set up for me, but left it for me to "build"!!!

I think its a bit more complicated than copy and paste..Hahahaha.
I hope my website is so lucky to be slammed once in a while BC_Programmer, I could certainly handle all of them buying something from me..... Then I will be rich. ((hehehe) maybe)

On a different note a friend has asked me to "have a look" at his laptop and see if I can make it work... So I'll start a new TOPIC on that today.
It looks a little bit beyond me at this point.

Hope you got your Halloween costumes ready.. its getting closer as we speak.

Thanks to all ImnoGuru.

P.S. Do you know what would be really cool... is to have some additional, seasonal, smileys to choose from. Maybe those who know, can talk to Admin, after all we did have Star Treky bits for a minute.

Hi Guys and gals. For about the last month when I'm on certain sites with IE 8 I GET the above MESSAGE. I've TRIED to change the security SETTINGS but nothing seems to work to get rid of these messages. Any ideas? What add-on is it? Have you tried going to Tools->Manage Add Ons and reinstalling the offending add-on?Is it possible to post the site so i can check it on this end ? ?I disabled ShockWave Flash Object and it's gone. Now I only get a message once in a while that this has been disabled. Patio, I was EVEN getting this on these sites.Gotcha...Thanx for the heads up...
I just suspected it may have been the site instead of the browser...

Solve : Browser Freezes - Firefox, Opera?

Answer»

Hello,
I was having problems with my Firefox browser for weeks
It began freezing with increasing frequency, I noticed it was happening mostly on sites like youtube, yahoo and I think some flash heavy websites.
At one point the first thing it did once started up was to freeze
I tried some Mozilla forums but without much help, so I changed my browser to Opera two weeks ago.
What's awful however is that yesterday the browser started hanging and not responding much like Firefox did before.
I scan my system with Norton regularly and run the Registry and Disc cleaner from Norton Utilities often.
It also froze on me while in Safe Mode - Windows 7.

I have no idea what the problem could be, and I need help.
There's nothing more frustrating than having your browser freeze unexpectedly while doing work The fact that it happens in safe mode is troubling. Is the only problem the browser freezing? If so, my first thought is malware. If not, it could be the hd or ram or some other hardware issue.

I suggest FULL scans with both your anti virus app AND with MalwareBytes.

Also, if you are using a registry cleaner (as you say you are), it's POSSIBLE that is causing problems for you. Registry cleaners do not fix problems, the cause them.Quote from: Allan on October 06, 2011, 03:28:07 PM

Thanks Allan, I had no idea registry cleaners could cause issues so I'm definitely re-evaluating that practice.
Only problem I'm experiencing is with browsers yes, everything else appears to be working normal.
I did a full system scan yesterday after Opera started acting up and found one tracking cookie but noting else
I will try MalwareBytes as well and keep posted, I just hope it's not a hardware issues cause that would be a real hassle
If it's only the browsers it probably is not a hardware problem.Just to be sure about it not being a hardware problem, you might download speedfan and check your temps. If it was a hardware problem it would effect more than the browser. But there's no harm in checking anyway.Quote from: Allan on October 06, 2011, 04:22:43 PM

Did you scan with an anti virus app?

Both with Malwarebytes, Norton Anti-Virus and Norton Power Eraser on the off-chance that a particularly stubborn virus is causing this.
They found nothing and browser keeps freezing on me
What is the chance that a CODEC or some flash plug-in is causing this, because it seems to freeze up often on flash based websites?

I use RealTemp, and haven't seen anything out of the ordinary.I suggest you install the CPU Meter gadget for Windows 7. With it, you can observe fluctuations in CPU and memory usage while you working with your computer. That might yield a clue to what's causing the problem. Flash heavy sites will commonly cause some noticeable fluctuation in CPU usage.

BTW, what are the hardware specs for your computer? Quote from: SOYBEAN on October 07, 2011, 11:58:34 AM

Hi Soybean,
It's an Acer Aspire laptop,
Intel Core2 DUO CPU T6600 @ 2.20GHz,
4,0GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 240M
I actually have the CPU meter gadget and when Opera becomes not responding, the CPU usage gets to something like 14-20% while normally it's 5-10% when just browsing. The memory usage stays the same, something between 40-50%.
It also freezes quite often once every five minutes maybe and for 5-10 seconds at a time *bump

Hope somebody has any idea/suggestion that might help Quote from: Ivo on October 13, 2011, 02:53:02 PM

Solve : How to read mail in new yahoo classic.?

Answer»

I am really finding it so difficult to read, delete or even write mails on this new yahoo purple coloured classic.Though am using internet explorer, plz is there any help ?http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/

The user interface is quite self-explanatory....hmm never got that dilemma i think it's not that though to use besides the name was written whether you're going to your mail and everything..you can also use Help.It doesn't have to be purple. I PERSONALIZED it using themes and I've got greenish background

But for the rest it's a matter of GETTING used to it.
For me, it's not so badYou can go back to the old version by turning off Javascript temporarily. Some say you can't go back, but it's not true.
http://my-reference-notes.blogspot.com/2011/08/how-to-switch-back-to-yahoo-mail.html

How to switch back to Yahoo Mail Classic:

1. Disable your browser's Javascript

Windows Internet Explorer
To disable JavaScript:
i. From the Tools menu, or the Tools drop-down in the upper right, choose Internet Options... .
ii. Click the Security tab.
iii. Click Custom Level... .
iv. Scroll to the "Scripting" section of the list. Uncheck to Disable scripting.
v. Close and restart your browser.

Mozilla Firefox
i. On the Tools menu, click Options.
ii. On the Content tab, uncheck check box to disable JavaScript.
iii. Click the Go back one page button to return to the previous page, and then click the Reload current page button to run scripts.

2. Open Yahoo mail URL and login using your id and password.

3. A warning message will be prompted that JavaScript is needed to be enabled for using the new Yahoo! Mail. You will also see two options to return to a previous version of Yahoo!Mail. Choose the first option to switch just for one time or second option to return to a previous version. Choose the second option here.

4. Now you are back to the classic version.

5. In order to access all web sites properly, don’t forget to ENABLE JavaScript from your browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox).
Didn't find it difficult, just unstable. Of course, the non-Java seems to be just as unstable lately. I see no real advanage to using the Java version. Don't need all the fancy graphics. I use Mail the WAY you used to write letters, just text with the occasional enclosure (i.e., attachment).Quote from: Ademil4vic on September 16, 2011, 06:23:34 AM

Outside that everything is normal. What did I do and how do I undo it?now I notice the reload button also does not workAssuming the problems are exclusively with Firefox, first thing you want to do is REBOOT. If the problem persists uninstall Firefox and reinstall it.Try this, right-click beside Menu BAR or beside URL/Address bar and check mark Navigation Toolbar. If no changes, then PROCEED to reinstalling FF as suggested. To check the POSSIBILITY of it being a wonked addon or plugin load Safemode Firefox from the Start/Programs menu...

Solve : What about the Thumbnails??

I was wondering where my thumbnails went to? Now I have upgraded to IE 7 to IE 8 and now I have IE 9. I still dont have my thumbnails even though I upgraded to IE 9. I've installed all my updates, which have all been successfully installed. Is there anything else I should do? What do you mean thumbnails? What do you mean thumbnails? On your webpage or visited/saved website?
Or, do you mean on Windows taskbar? At the bottom of the screen where my webpages are, usually I can see a little box with the webpage, the thumbnails, and now I dont see them. Quote from: soybean on November 07, 2011, 08:34:56 AM
Or, do you mean on Windows taskbar?
Do you know what the Windows taskbar is? Do you know how it works?Im not sure if I know how the windows taskbar works. What would I have to do to get the thumbnails to work again? Is this what you mean?:

No. What it is that on the bottom of my screen, it has the sites Im on at the moment. When I moved the mouse towards the webpages, I would see the thumbnails. I dont have what you posted above. So, when you hover your mouse over the Internet Explorer icon on the taskbar, which is at the bottom of your screen, you see thumbnails of the webpages you have open in Internet Explorer. And, if you hover your mouse over a thumbnail, you see that webpage in the full Internet Explorer window. Is that it? Soybean, all of what you said is correct. Quote from: Jack Catalano on November 22, 2011, 06:15:49 PM
Soybean, all of what you said is correct.
So, that's what you were seeing prior to starting this discussion but now it's not working that way and you don't see the thumbnails, right?

Did you change your desktop display to Windows Classic? In other words, did you disable a Windows Aero Theme? The thumbnails will not work if you're not using a Windows Aero Theme.

Quote from: Jack Catalano on November 22, 2011, 02:46:10 PM
No. What it is that on the bottom of my screen, it has the sites Im on at the moment.
And, that's exactly what I SHOWED you in the image I posted. Look at it again. It SHOWS TWO thumbnails representing two web pages open in Internet Explorer. So, why did you say my image is not what you are talking about?

Quote from: soybean on November 23, 2011, 07:27:01 AM

Im sorry, I forgot about this question that I posted. You hit the nail on the head with everything. Well, I got the thumbnails back!! I actually have Microsoft Fix It Center and they fixed the problem. There were a couple of programs that were unknown and the Acer E-Tool would show up when I would start my computer.

Basically any program thats on Microsoft Fix It Center, I ran it. Power, Performance, System Maintenance, you name it, I ran it.

Solve : How do I remove the full header in the email body??

Answer»

In Hotmail, when I try to reply or forward, the full HEADER appears in the body of the email. How do I hide it? I tried to just delete the full header but then the rest of my email does not go through when I send it. Any suggestions?I assume what you are referring to is that portion of the e-mail message that you received from someone else and now you want to "forward " the message to someone else. However you do not want to include information such as the sender and/or any comments made to you by the sender in the received e-mail. There are at least 2 ways to do this. One takes place after you have created the to be SENT e-mail by using the "forward" function. From within the created message HIGHLIGHT the portion to be deleted and then click on "delete " on your keyboard and the unwanted portion will be gone and NOT sent. The 2nd is to take the action from the ORIGINAL received e-mail and with the message displayed highlight the portion of the message that you want to send only. Do a "control C" to create the copy. Then open a new e-mail with the contact(s) desired and the "subject of your own creation and into the message body with your cursor placed within click on "control V" and that which you highlighted will be placed as your message. You can then add any other material into the message as you desire. HOPE that deals with your issue.truenorth

Or, you can open the Hosts file with Notepad to view it and manually edit it, as explained at the above link. Just for shirts and giggles what PROTECTION apps do you have on this PC ? ?No protection except what comes on the XP disk. I am going to try the fix it tool above mention.

Yes it is.
Nothing happens when I click on it. The hour GLASS shows, then nothing.Okay. I suggest you uninstall it for the moment.

What OS are you running and what is the version of IE that you replaced?I'm running Windows XP with SP3I replaced IE6Uninstall IE8. Then try upgrading to IE7 if you like as a first step. Let's see if that works. Why don't you RECOMMEND resetting IE to default through Internet Options? Why uninstall? Hey Allan, Installed IE7 without a problem. Then tried to install IE8 and after installing and reboot had this dialog box in the upper left corner of my desktop that read: Setting up personalized settings for Browser Customization. Screen was frozen and waited over an hour in hope that it was being done. Nothing happened and had to reboot in Safe Mode in order to delete IE8.
Okay, so if I understand correctly you now have IE7 installed and working properly, is that correct? If so, let's do this:

1) Download the standalone IE8 installer (http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=43)

2) Reboot. As soon as you see the blue WELCOME screen, hold down the LEFT CTRL key on the keyboard. Continue to hold it down until Windows finishes LOADING and the cursor changes from an hourglass to an arrow (this may take a minute or two). This will prevent any programs from loading and give you a semi-clean boot. If your Anti Virus application did load, disable it temporarily (or shut it down).

3) Go to where you saved the IE8 download, right-click on it and choose "run as administrator". Let IE8 install and when it's FINISHED reboot. Let's see if that works for you.Allan,
My wife doesn't care if she has IE8, since she uses firefox and wants me to leave her computer alone. When she is not around I will try your suggestions. Thanks for the help.

Solve : Safari Causes Windows XP to Crash?

Answer»

Recently I installed the latest Safari 5.1.2, but after 1-2 hours running Safari, my Windows XP will crash and reboot, without any alert or error message.
After reboot, launch Safari, it'll again crash the Windows after 1-2 hours. It just keep crashing like that all DAY long.

I have no problem with any other browser (IE/Firefox/Chrome/Rockmelt), only Safari. What are you doing on the internet when it crashes? Are you WATCHING flash videos? Anyway, why do you want to use Safari on windows?Doing usual computer WORK, nothing special, it just crash all of a sudden.

I never use Safari on a desktop before.
And one of the day I read that its plugin can customize Facebook to get rid of all those ANNOYING features, so I just try it out.first uninstall safari. use chrome or ie onlyQuote from: sub123 on January 15, 2012, 11:26:26 PM

first uninstall safari. use chrome or ie only

What? Use Firefox!Use whatever browser you like.

There is no reason Safari should cause your system to crash, but I agree that if it does, it's simple enough to use a different browser of your CHOICE.

Solve : IE7 vs Google Chrome?

Answer»

Been using IE7 for many years on my WinXP PC. It has been getting slower and slower with many freeze-ups. Was doing a connection speedtest and SAW an ad to try Google Chrome which I did. It has blinding speed compared to IE7. To good to be true? Have I given up security or some other important function by going to Chrome? I have Verizon FiOS and MS Security Essentials. Thanks. You should get Firefox INSTEAD. Google loves invading your privacy a LITTLE too much to entrust your entire browser experience to 'm.If you're happy with Chrome that's fine. It's considered one of the most secure browsers.Quote from: Allan on January 14, 2012, 05:44:11 AM

If you're happy with Chrome that's fine. It's considered one of the most secure browsers.

Thanks Allan. Is my experience with IE7 typical? I assumed the slow page loads were caused by Win Essentials making sure the pages were secure. Why is IE7 so slow and prone to freeze-ups?

One thing I don't like about Chrome is that the text is faint compared to IE7 and I can't figure out how to darken it. I changed fonts but that didn't work. Any suggestions? Thanks. No, your experience with IE is not typical. And sorry, but I can't HELP you with Chrome, I don't use it.

Solve : Chrome crashed when download and upload?

Answer»

I wonder if anyone here has an answer or solution to this issue.
It has been discussed for years on Google's Help Forum but they failed to have a solution until now.

It crashes when you navigate down through few levels of the directory to save a file, or choose a file to UPLOAD.

My current PRACTICE:
If I wanna download a file, I always save it to my desktop (requires 1 CLICK on the Desktop button on the left panel).
If I wanna upload a file, I'll put the file on desktop, and select from there (same 1 click action)

I've been doing so for months and it never crash.

But whenever I try to navigate further than 2-3 level down, it crashes expectedly.

Get Firefox. It is superior. I am always surprised at Google's INABILITY to patch things despite their invasive always-running-behind-the-scenes updater.

Same with their stupid toolbar. Did they ever get around to creating a VERSION for Firefox 5?

At this point in time I do believe IE is more secure than FF with Chrome leading the pack. Chrome Is Most Secure of the Top Three Browsers, Study Finds

Although I'm not giving up FF yet, Chrome is making some major progress with it's speed and security not to mention a growing number of useful add-ons.

So NoScript counts for nothing?

I never said that.

The user behind the MOUSE and keyboard make a browser secure. An add-on is just one layer of security and no one layer alone will ever be enough unless you simply never connect to the Internet.

Also, NoScript is not without it's faults:
Attention all NoScript users
Adblock Plus and (a little) more
ALERT: Firefox with NoScript does NOT ALWAYS protect from SWF clipboard hijacks

In short. NoScript only blocks what does not make the developer money (check your NoScript whitelist). Including other security related add-ons which are not always easy to determine. And it does have vulnerabilities.

Understanding it is the reason I don't use it. For example this very forum. With NoScript set to it's defaults you can not see all of the posting options. There are no Smileys or BBCode formatting options.

With NoScript

Without NoScript

For the record I never was a fan of NoScript. For me it's a PITA and in all my years of visiting shady websites I have not gotten infected unless I was trying to. It's not just blocking scripts, it's blocking content.

I PREFER AdBlockPlus and Ghostery. But just like NoScript they have their faults and I have had to whitelist several things in Ghostery in order to see web pages as they should be seen. And by default AdBlockPlus is set to "Allowing acceptable ads in Adblock Plus". I find myself using the Open With add-on quite a bit due to knowing that there is content on a web page that I am not seeing. Judging from what I'm reading, Noscript was too difficult to operate for you. That's not really Noscript's fault.

Yeah, I'm betting Noscript makes tons by whitelisting about:config. Why didn't I think of that?

Riiiight.
I didn't put words in Veltas' mouth. Please don't put them in mine.

I must have thrown those out a long time ago. I know there are some entries which are greyed out but you can remove those through about:config from what I recall.

I didn't see anything strange greyed-out though, so it is trivial to remove the entries you don't want. What were they?Dunno, I removed them! You're all WRONG!

Solve : Chrome & Firefox not displaying some websites properly?

Answer»

This happened today. The websites that don't work PROPERLY are Youtube, Facebook, and one forum. I just opened Chrome this afternoon, went to Youtube, and it looked like this:

On the VIDEO page, the video is just a black screen and doesn't play.

Then I went to CHECK Facebook, which now looks like this:

The websites display PERFECTLY on IE, though.

I have no idea what to do, so I came here for help.Open Task Manager when this happens and see what it shows for CPU Usage percentage. Do you have other programs running when this happens? If you hit the refresh/reload button on your browser, then does the page load correctly?

By the way, this topic was already marked solved (the green check mark). Did you intend to do that? I just marked it unsolved. Let me know if that's not correct. Looks like the browser has failed to fetch the CSS files. Try a Ctrl-F5 on any affected site.Try using a different web-browser, or make sure that Facebook is not on the SIMPLIFIED site.Sometimes blocking Javascript tends to make websites end up looking like that.

I find it unbelievable.
See what's inside. Maybe some "Quarantine" folder? There are a multitude of folders that apparently include the exact virus definitions which are getting installed to my computer through the LiveUpdate. This folder is present only for Norton 2008 and earlier versions, so it may be worth upgrading to the latest version. How about, if we get RID of Norton and we switch to something "lighter"?I upgraded to Norton Internet Security 2010 and now have 22.5 GB of free space. Now that's an understatement.Hi again everyone,

I'm bumping this topic because I received such tremendous help before.

I have passed this Packard Bell laptop on to my Mum, but it is running incredibly slow. This is especially noticable when running Internet Explorer.

I have attached the Autoruns output. Is there anything you can suggest to get the computer running faster? It doesn't have to be superfast, just as long as it is reasonable to work with!

Many thanks.

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]I would try updating to IE9, and seeing if that works

Solve : Characters in subjest line?

Answer»

I use Firefox 3.6.3 and I have been noticing in yahoo mail in the subject line I get a little square box with the numbers 27 on top and 28 on the bottom where there should seem to be letters is this because of browser or it related to windows XP? I should mention it is not all email's just some of them.

JohnThis is a Unicode thing. If the font Firefox is using in the subject line doesn't have the Unicode character referenced, it will display a box instead with the glyph's ID in it; in this case (2728). Either change the font that you're using in Firefox to a more Unicode-friendly font, or try installing one of the free Unicode FONTS available. In certain fonts the character is a symbol called "Sparkles" and looks like this:

It is found in symbol fonts such as Dingbats. Whoever is sending you these emails thinks you are using a Unicode compatible font, or doesn't care. Or they've got a Mac. Or you have.

That is SOMETHING I never knew as I thought every thing takes care of itself.

Solve : menu bar options will intermittantly not work , IE9 only.?

Answer»

This is on my HP Compag 6715b (in specs). Occasionally, when IE9 is ALREADY open and funtioning, and I open a NEW tab, the menu bar options will not WORK in the new tabs (file, edit, view, favorites, tools, help. ect.)
This is only with IE9. Firefox 8 tabs and menus work fine.
I can close the tab - then reopen a new tab - but no change. Im not sure yet about the specific details yet because it's an infrequent issue, but I'd like to figure it out soon.
I'll post more details if/when it happens again.

Thanks for any help!
