Solve : I'm little bit sick (cold), and bored, so....?

Answer»

...little things make me nervous

No new posts at this time, so maybe someone will have an answer.

Let's say, in Firefox, I open Google in tab #1. My Firefox options (Tab Mix Plus), and Google options are set to open any link from Google in a new tab.
So, Google lnik opens in tab #2.
Then, I go back to Google, and I click on another link, and I expect it to open in tab #3. Instead, it opens in tab #2, erasing the web page already opened in tab #2.
I'm pulling my hair, because it wasn't this way, before my HD crashed, but in no way I can find any setting responsible for this behavior. How are the preferences set in google ? ?
They may be overriding the TabMixPlus settings...There is only one option in Google:

which in Firefox translates to new TAB.Did you try it both ways ? ?
In the MEANTIME i'll review my TabMixPlus options and settings...OK, I got it...maybe because I feel better...LOL
I had this option wrong:

Then, if it's set like this, Google>Preferences option doesn't matter.
Good..one less headache...heheheJolly Good...Just me, but little things like this are bugging me. LOLOK well i got one for you then....
winmgmt error on every BOOT in Win2K.
Even after a clean install and every fix i have SEEN...Hey, I'm only some Specialist, and you're The Genius...LOL
If I start helping you, who is gonna read HJT logs???

Does that error appear on screen, or in Event Viewer?Onscreen...Event Viewer yields no pertinent info...Patio, do you have a screenshot?Right after Win 2K fresh install? At what point of BOOTING?Did you go through this thread:
Link Edit

ooops sorry !I'll give those a shot ...there's 4 or 5 solutions there....and i remember trying the one that mentions deleting the winmgmt file and re-booting. Didn't work.
Especially that one from missing M$ article, which they actually found back.

Solve : cannot view certain websites?

Answer»

I am running a desktop, and laptop on my d link router. I am using a dsl connection. I cannot open certain websites on either computer for ex: www.usbank.com. If I connect my laptop to my neighbors wireless i can access all sites. Tried resetting the dsl modem, and router..no luck..any ideas? What Windows version? What browser?
www.usbank.com is a secure web site, so it must be something about your security settings.
Since you can access that site through your neighbour connection, most likely, there is some security setting on your router.
Try this.
Connect your computer STRAIGHT to your modem, bypassing router, and see if you can reach www.usbank.comQuote from: Broni on November 08, 2007, 10:13:44 PM

Sorry, im running xp pro..IE 7 on my laptop,IE 6 on desktop. I tried with just the dsl modem, still dosent WORK.

In IE7:

Tools ---> Internet Options ---> Advanced Tab.
Under security, select the FOLLOWING:

Use SSL 3.0
Use TLS 1.0

Does it work now? Or do you already have those checked? Also, try Firefox, and see what happens.Quote from: dairyman on November 09, 2007, 01:18:34 AM

Tried Firefox also...same results.I'm totally clueless. You can connect through your neighbour network, but not through your modem...hmmmmm
Another try...
Connect your computer straight to your modem, disconnect modem from power source, wait 30 sec, reconnect. Restart computer, and try again.Quote from: Broni on November 09, 2007, 04:56:43 PM

Yeah, I can use my laptop wireless on my neighbors connection. But when i try either of my computers on my connection..i can't view certain websites. Tried powering down the router and dsl modem. No luck with either. We, apparently eliminated your router, so the very last option, which I really tried to avoid, is bad modem. How old is it?
BTW...does your neighbour have same ISP, as yours?Quote from: Broni on November 10, 2007, 09:38:28 AM

THATS what i was thinking, my neighbor has cable modem, I have DSL. I'll try to call them on MondayIt looks even more like your modem problem, then.

Solve : IE6 & Google?

Answer»

Hello Everyone: Does this happen to anyone else? When I am using IE
and I start a search on Google after the second link is clicked on the page
load GETS very slow and even freezes for a COUPLE of minutes before loading
and I cannot scroll or close out right away, I have to wait to close too
Now when I use Opera, Google is nice and fast as it should be and PAGES load fast and scrolling is no problem and I can close out right away!
I have no spyware or virus's and I am up to date with Microsoft!

Anyone have any idea's as to what is causing this? ThanksThis is not any advice, since I barely touch IE. It's more like a suggestion.
Leave IE alone, and use better browsers (Firefox, Opera...)I upgraded from IE6 to IE7 about 7 months ago, as I recall. Although I use Firefox most of the time, I have used IE7 enough that I can say I've never had that problem.

Have you cleared your browsing history to see whether that helps? Thanks, Yes, I clear it a couple TIMES a day. but what I just tried is, I went into Tools, Manage Ad-on's and disabled a few things, especially TWO in there that were using activex.
It seems to be running better now after restart, but I will see tomorrow when I am on the pc longer.
I will report back on how it goes tomorrow!
Mean while if anyone else has had this problem and has any idea's please let me know?

Solve : HELP - Site Lock Out?

Answer»

My Dell computer runs Internet Explorer 6.0. My ISP is Road Runner via Time Warner Cable.
Now for whatever UNKNOWN reason I am intermittenly LOCKED out of the site. I can access every & any website on the face of the earth EXCEPT the FGMCC.com. When I try to get on I get the IE error message that tells me the site is unavailable or busy.

The last time this happened (last month) I could not get on for about 24+ hours. In that time, I contacted our web guru for the club, Lloyd. He checked evverything on his end & there was no problem with the site.

I contacted Time Warner Cable and Road Runner. They checked everything on their end & no problem either.

I contacted DELL (after hours on the phone with them) they also found no explanation. They WANT me to kill my entire home computer & then re-load everything. That is a last resort for me. I was about to do it when magically I was able to get back in the site.

Last week, another board memeber emailed me becuase he was locked out for over a day & the magically he got back in. This makes me all the more hesitant to kill my system as it is not a problem that only I am having.

I have now been locked out of our site for 2 full days. Do you have any insight as to why this could be occurring to myself & OTHERS???

I do not know where else to turn for support so thought I would check with you guys.

Thank you for listening and for hopfully some insight into this bizarre problem.

BTW, I did attempt to use firefox instead of IE but had problems with Firefox & my Norton Anti-Virus so I deleted it and went back to IE.Not Firefox, but Norton may be your bigger problem.
Try to disable it, use Firefox, and see, if you can connect.Oh, wow, I forgot to mention that I am bascially computer literate...not good at techy STUFF.
I do have Norton Anti-Virus & Security. I disbaled it and attempted to get into the site but still NO LUCK.

I also downloaded firefox and kept norton disbaled & still could not get in.FGMCC.com works fine for me. don't know what your problem is.

But try this link:

http://anonymouse.org/cgi-bin/anon-www.cgi/http://fgmcc.com

It will take you to same page, except it is using the FREE proxy provided by anonymouse.org.Well, that link worked - I could finally get onto the website but it will not allow me to log in and post.

Partially helped......anything else??See, if you can do it in Safe Mode. Be quick, you have no protection in Safe Mode.Quote from: CAPS on November 11, 2007, 07:57:19 AM

Well, that link worked - I could finally get onto the website but it will not allow me to log in and post.

At least you know it is not a problem with fgmcc.com's website itself.

Now, try the safe mode like Broni suggested. Let us know what happens.safe mode?

Is that when I shut down my computer and hit F2 a bunch of times and then choose SAFE Mode???

Here is a link from microsoft's website of the discription of safe mode and how to access it:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222

It is for windows XP. It should work for you.

In safe mode, you do not boot up any drivers or any programs that usually start up when you load windows normally.

Let us know how it goes, and this is assuming you are on some version of windows.

Thank you for that. Yes, I run windows XP.
Magically at about 9:15pm the website suddenly opened up for me.
I was locked out of it for 3 days!! Made me absolutely insane.

I wish I knew what triggered it to happen. It looks like site itself had a problem. You would think it was the site but there are only a few of over 500 that have this sporadic problem. When it happens, they check out the site & it appears fine & everyone else is in it but me.....(sigh)

Solve : Download prob??

Answer»

Hi all, this site is new to me so PLEASE excuse my ignorance on some areas.
I have a prob where as now when I have downloaded something from a site a message comes up after in a box and says` this certain item cannot be saved because an uknown error has occured, try another location` which I did and it repeated itself. This happened about 6 months ago and the ENGINEER removed new downloaded google FIREFOX and then re-installed it,it worked OK, is this just a coincidence or do I have to do the same, and I will lose all my bookmarks if I do the same, or shall I change my browser? thanks for any help. you should record it first on microsoft wordpad or wateva then get new browser and add it."try another location" actually sounds like the download site is having the problem...
Are there other server's listed on the webpage ? ?
What are you DLoading and from where ? ?
Maybe we can take a look to see if the problem is on their end before you have to MAKE any big changes...

Solve : What is the fastest Internet Browser??

Answer»

Quote from: BC_Programmer on November 27, 2010, 03:13:49 PM

Obviously everybody has glossed over the true browser of choice in today's market: Netscape navigator 3.

Which I think I still have installed on one or two systems. Now that was a breakthrough browser!!!And it worked on more operating systems! I mean, firefox works on Linux, windows, and mac; but netscape worked on Linux, windows, mac, as well as windows 3.1. Obviously it's the best choice.

But seriously; for all intents and purposes, the browser war is over. It was Netscape versus IE. IE won by a large margin since netscape sorta dissolved and had to be reborn as an OSS project. Asking "which browser should I use/is the best" is akin to how women will often ask their boyfriends/husbands wether they should wear, say, the RED dress or the blue dress. It doesn't make a difference which one you wear, it'll still take the same amount of time to get to your destination. A common METAPHOR is that the browser is that the browser is a vehicle that moves us through the web; some browsers are corvettes and others are pinto's and so forth, but this isn't the case. No matter what browser you are using, you're riding in the same car, just wearing a different dress. There is no fastest...
It depends on what you want a browser to do...

Stop the MADNESS of convos like this...What is a "convo"?
I would always go for chrome. It is faster than firefox and other internet browsers.ST conv i'd say means converstaion.

George, thats PERSONAL preference, read the 63 posts before you.I can't be a***d to read all of the previous posts in this rather silly thread, but surely - surely - these days, unless you have an antique or under specified computer, html is going to get rendered in much LESS time than the user can notice, so that the governing factor in a user's web browsing experience is going to be the connection speed. If a person is wondering about "fastest browsers" they are barking up the wrong tree, especially if they are on dialup.

Solve : IE8 and websites?

Answer»

@Azzaboi, thanks for that, but i know what it is and what it does, but when it running from start up it slows my system down, compared to starting it, then using it, then closing it manually. I can only speak from experience and that has what has happened on the systems that i have got. QUOTE from: reddevilggg on November 24, 2010, 07:53:28 AM

Yeah, that's what I was recommending to do, run it only manually (any SOFTWARE like that for that matter). Having more than one active scanner and more background processes (rather than just the one anti-virus) could slow you down with services fighting over resources.and again, as a lot of my "problems" reported to this board, it turns again into a discussion that loses my ATTENTION and the cause of the report...and starts to develop into a discussion between experts(?) you never try a damned thing anybody suggests; or more precisely, you never give feedback about them. For example, still no report on wether this helped:

Quote
1) In IE, go Tools/Manage Addins and disable all the ones you can live without, including "diagnose CONNECTION"
2) In a command prompt type: regsvr32 actxprxy.dll

Also, try disabling AVG's safe surfing add-on. That reportedly causes IE to take a while to close, and tab/window opening problems.
Quote
thank God, an answer I can work with, thanks Azzaboi. use Advanced SystemCare 3 already...add-ons already fixed, slowest thats hanging is one in 0.3 secs..lol..
and no, I dont have AVG's surfing add-on on... Quote

Had nothing to do with my suggestion. I never said anything about either "fixing" addons nor hanging addons, so not SURE what relevance that has.

Quote
and no, I dont have AVG's surfing add-on on...
then ignore that suggestion.add-ons was a suggestion of one of the other helpers ..but well, now I have being using Opera for quite a while and no problems there, so I will have to forget IE and put Opera up front, but thanks for all the ;Dsuggestions

Solve : Bt broadband customer trying to use internet explorer instead of BT icon?

Answer»

My grandad - bless him, has a pretty new HP desktop and is connected to the internet via BT Broadband. When it was first set-up he was also able to use Internet Explorer to open his internet pages and he also had his most used websites set-up in his 'favorites'. It has now stopped WORKING and keeps bringing up the 'Page cannot be displayed' error.
He can still access the internet through the BT broadband icon but the page setup on this is completely different and he finds it DIFFICULT to remember the new things I've set-up for him.
Can someone point me in the right direction to link Internet Explorer back up to run the internet for him as I have scoured the Internet myself for answers but I'm probably not looking in the right places.

Thanks,

RusstieSounds like he's not connected...
For now have him launch the BTComet app and then MINIMISE it with the - sign and then launch IE...
In the meantime i'll think of a more permanent fix for him...
Bear with me and other's may be along shortly but i haven't EVEN looked at IE for a few years now...

Or, try 'tools' > 'toolbars' and make sure everything is ticked, to get your help button back.

It actually, 'view' > 'toolbars'...........just to avoid confusionWhat we have here is a classic case of improper grammar, punctuation, and capitalization, which is causing a lot of confusion. ivanoe wants to know what version of Internet Explorer he is using. Someone told him to click on Help > About Internet Explorer, but his menu options are missing from the top of the browser.

Are you able to see the white bar at the top of Internet Explorer that allows you to type in a website address? If not, try pressing the F11 key on your keyboard as suggested because you may be in Fullscreen mode. If you can see the address bar, then that is likely not the solution. Instead, you can try moving the mouse CURSOR below the address bar until it turns into two arrows (pointing up and down). Once that happens, click and hold the left mouse button, pull the mouse towards you a few inches, and then let go. That should hopefully bring back your menus. If neither of these suggestions work, let us know and we can try something else.some versions of IE hide the menu bar. pressing "Alt" will cause it to appear.thaks Matt.i have tried sending you shot of my screen, but it didn't work.so let me explain it.top left of page google then thin blue line right across on right side,

I think you are talking about the menu bars on your IE browser... File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools, and Help Menu. You've already mention Help and Tools missing. Right-click on top of your IE browser in between the search bar or plugins and if options like these appears or open, on top is the Menu bar(uncheck), when highlighted and in blue, click the enter or mouse for it to re-appear again.

Thank you for rading this any help would be greatly apprieciated.Overall both systems are pretty similar, the Dell does have More memory but has a slower hard disk drive. Both laptops should handle new games although are not going to be able to run them at the highest settings. If it was me, the 5400 RPM hard disk drive really turns me off of the Dell computer, and I'd probably go for the HP, even if it has 1GB less RAM. However, that being SAID both the RAM and the HDD could be upgraded, even to a SSD drive.

If cost is an important factor for you since the computers are so similar you may just want to go for the cheapest laptop. Also, I'd read the reviews of people who've actually own the computer to help make your final decision. The Dell has a better processor and graphics, and overall would run better for gaming. The hard drive, as stated above, could be an issue, but definately what you're getting as a base model would be better. You can always add more RAM or a different hard drive later on. You can't CHANGE a processor or graphics later on with a laptop.Code: [Select][quote author=Alannis link=topic=129092.msg839828#msg839828 date=1331572793]

Solve : IE trouble opening?

Answer»

Problem

Internet Explorer starts to open and then closes. Option settings seem to be correct. I have run NORTON Antivirus and there is nothing found, I also ran Webroot Spy Sweeper nothing found. IE is the latest version with the updates on service packs. I’m using XP as the operating system. No other problems with the pc that I am aware of. I can dialup and use Mozilla Firefox without any trouble as a backup browser, however I prefer the IE. Any ideas would be helpful and appreciated.

Also:
Nothing new as added or removed, nor were any changes made when the problem occurred! Be gentle with me I have just enough knowledge to get into trouble, hopefully enough to know when to ask for help before I make a bigger mess out of things. sinds when do you have this problem, perhaps you installed something wrongTry uninstalling then reinstalling IE.

Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs> Add/Remove Windows Components and then remove the tick from IE> click next and let it run through.

Reboot your system and then go through the process again and REPLACE the tick.

Try it now. Thanks for the help. I will try it out. Another question comes to mind. Can I use “system restore” ? Will “system restore” bring the IE back to the settings before the problems was encountered, or is system restore only for the operating system? Everything else with the pc is operating fine, again my only problem is IE and I did not make any changes in the settings before the date of the problem. I also had all updates and service packs long before this "bug" got me. Navigate to & double click on the iexplore.exe file.
C:\Program FILES\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

Fed – good idea, however I tried this action and it didn’t load. Quote

Pcwizards – another good idea, however I tried this several times just as you pointed out and it did not fix the problem. I did notice that before I removed it, there was no program in the “currently installed programs” window. I did go on and did the add/rem components with a remove. Then backed out and did a reboot, then the back to do the add/rem components to add. Everything seemed to take correctly with the “wizard window”. However IE never shows up in the “currently installed programs”. I tried this operation several times to “kick” it a little, but never shows up. I do notice that the icon for IE goes and comes when I add/rem. IE program continues to fail to remain fully opened.

Looks like I lost the IE application file and can’t add it totally?

I did have IE 6 at the time before everything fell apart with it, and I also had downloaded the service packs for security and updates. This was done well before any problems started. There were no changes or settings made for months before the problem came about.

My question now is: I can’t find backup disc for IE 6. I’ve looked all over the house. I did find my older ver 5. Can I install v.5 from the CD and then get to MS for a download of the ver 6? as well as the patches?

Also another avenue I could go down maybe? Question. Can I do a “system restore” back to the date before this problem came about? I don’t know if system restore keeps track of IE programs?

Again any help or ideas with this is appreciated!
Wow, the exact same thing just happened to me! IE starts to load for about 3 seconds, then it goes away. It does not show up in the Control Panel add/remove program list, but it is in C:\programfiles\Internet Explorer. Clicking on the .exe files yields the same results.

The only difference is that I installed Norton 2006 System Works and Personal FIREWALL a couple of days ago, but it worked after this installation.

I have my Windows XP Reinstallation CD. Can I reinstall it from there, or is there a simplier solution? Just to be sure...

I tried these two scans. Trendmicro found one file named DOWN_SE.70336 and removed it.

Thanks!
I now have some other troubles, seems I must reload IE now that the file was removed?

:-/A cheap price to pay, and easier than reloading Windows!I’m using XP and IE was ver. 6 with SP1 & 2 that I had patched long ago. I feel I have no recourse but to remove the IE –6 and do a re-install.

Problem is I can’t find the backup disc for XP and the files that I need. When I upgraded from 98 several years back – I either didn’t get the disc. or I have misplaced them. I have found my old 98 with ver 5 IE. My question is can I go back to the ver 5? This would get IE back on the system and I can get off Firefox.

Any thoughts?

DOWN_SE.70336 is not a windows or IE file. Why not just go the microsoft download site and get the latest copy. Save it on your hard drive, uninstall what you had, reboot and then uinstall?

Now that’s what seems like a great idea. Why do we always make things harder? KISS right.

Thanks I’m going that direction tomorrow.
It’s a good thing I don’t get paid by the hour on this problem. ;-) Busy with xmas
errands these days.
I have another question that’s looking for an answer.

I got the download IE6setup.exe copied to disc. I also PRINTED the instructions, however after reading it I got more confused about some steps that I should think about before preceding. I want to try and save some of the settings that I “have been” using in the old IE, things like bookmarks, etc. and I don’t know how to do that?

If I “remove” ie6setup from the old location on the drive using “add/rem” and then install the new ie6setup – will other personal settings remain or will they be lost? Or do I leave the old copy of ie6setup and simply “run” the new copy that will write over the old?

This is the first time I have had to do this and I sure it can cause trouble if I don’t do it correctly, thus I need some help from those in the know with steps to follow. I appreciate all the past help that got me to this point, and its come too far for me to blow now! ;-)

confused In IE, go to File, Import and Export and then save to a file on a floppy. Do the same in Outlook or Outlook Express for your address book.

now you are ready to proceed.I want to thank you guys for all the help and the scan for spyware & malware did find some problems.

After everything was completed, I finally had to give it up and let a professional tech do what I couldn’t. I got a new hard drive with more space, did a clean sweep of the old OS and files, reloaded OS, and got me back on track.

The lesson I’ve learned in this is that there is a lot of help here to keep me out of trouble, but there are some things that just need someone who can go the extra mile with their knowledge. Money well spent however I now run Firefox online and I will try to keep all the spyware and virus protection updated even more often then before. I can’t use a firewall as the dialup is too slow and it would only slow down things even more.

But again thanks to everyone!

Solve : 2012 Internet Browser Software Review?

For those of you who want to make an informed decision as to which browser may be best SUITED for you...I found the following review, after doing a Google search. It's amazing what one can find on the Web, huh?

Anyway...

The following link will give you a pretty GOOD idea as to how most of the major browser software stacks up against each other: 2012 Internet Browser Software Product Comparisons

Hopefully, some of you may find it very useful...I know I have.

Edit...

Updated the link. Sorry about that.Oh boy. Browser comparisons.

Quite a lot of interesting facts can be found by googling Jerry Ropelato, the founder of toptenreviews.

So they claim.
Yes...I have.

Yet...I just posted this for informative purposes. There will be those who disagree with, either the review...or the publication, itself.

It's up to an "individual" to make his/her own informed decision...

Question...

Have you ever had someone ask you what browser you use...or which one would be best for them? If so...what do you tell them?

Do you tell them what you use and then swear by it...or, do you suggest they do research and make their own informed decision?Quote from: GlitchPC on March 17, 2012, 10:04:04 AM

Yes, plenty of times, and I tell them I use more than one browser, Firefox, Internet Explorer 9 and Opera 11 mainly

Quote
...or which one would be best for them? If so...what do you tell them?

. If they ask me which one would be best for them, I tell them that I can't decide that for them, that there is not really a lot of difference between the mainstream browsers, and that they should try them all out personally and see which they like best.

Quote
Do you tell them what you use and then swear by it...

No, definitely not.

Quote
or, do you suggest they do research and make their own informed decision?

I suggest they try out a number of browsers. Reading a website that says "Chrome is great!" is not "research". That site claims to "aggregate" other reviews but nowhere is there any evidence of this. They could have just written it all themselves, and knowing what I do about the founder, I know what I prefer to do.

I have Firefox, Opera and Chrome Installed, as well....even tried Safari, too. Was not very happy with how Safari performed. Just my personal opinion.

I float, back and forth, from them...not specifically using one over the other...all the time. Consider me "fickle"...I guess.

Might I ask...

If you were to use a site for software ratings...which would you prefer?

I have Googled "Jerry Ropelato"...as you suggested.

What is it about him that "turns you off" about this particular site?If one COMPUTER is only ALLOWED to install one browser, think of how much this would be a hot topic. But in reality, we could install and use them for personal preferences and usage. Let there be room for competition and improvements.Quote from: kpac on March 17, 2012, 06:41:40 AM
One thing I'm trying to figure out is how they decided Chrome got a higher rating than Firefox for "Feature Set". I can see how Chrome would win on "Ease of Use", but not on "Feature Set".

Why's that?I think that advancing a suggestion re a browser being "best" is going to be a very subjective statement. As one that has had experience with a fair number of them (but certainly not all) i have formed a personal preference from what is my own criteria. That criteria may NOT be the priority of someone else. For instance with the rising concern for privacy one may want to make that their highest priority. In which case "Comodo" (if their assertions in that arena can be believed) could be a "right " choice for them. As in many things like what flavour of Jello one likes best. truenorth
P.S. As has been noted i find it intriguing that this topic seems to reoccur on the forums as much as it does. I believe it all boils down to one's "personal preference".

There will be those who state one is better than the other...yet, I still have to prove it to myself. Therefore, I do not simply read a review and trust what they have to say...though, I may find it useful in my decision of whether or not I want to try and/or use it.

We had a user post a thread about the "most secure" browser. The review site posted Chrome as the best. We questioned why Opera was not included in this review. Funny thing is...Chrome was the first browser pwned, this year.Quote from: GlitchPC on March 17, 2012, 10:49:10 AM

I don't like "N best" sites. Also Ropelato is a SCAREMONGER who has a weird fixation with pornography. Solve : Both Chrome and Firefox very slow?

Answer»

Hello.

My speeds when downloading, streaming video, even just loading simple pages, have become terribly as of late - with downloading at just a handful of KB per second usually. Regardless of browser used (I have tried primarily Firefox and Chrome), speeds have become really bad. This probably began about two weeks ago or so.

Mind you, my actual internet speed anytime I measure it is consistently good (consistently over 110 Mbps down and 12 up, which is actually a bit more than I pay for). In fact right now I'm attempting to grab a malware program in the background - I'm getting 10.1 KBs, ridiculous, though my speeds reflect the numbers I just quoted. I did a speed test as I was downloading and got those numbers. Yet the download itself is only KBs per second.

The simplest YouTube video or stream (any source) stutters, loads, plays a bit, loads, etc. The smallest of downloads (say, a Minecraft mod that is only a few dozen mbs) takes several minutes, if it doesn't fail completely, when something ten times as large would have taken seconds recently.

I have cleared the browsers history, cache, etc, gotten rid of all extensions, and finally completely uninstalled and started fresh (with both Chrome and Firefox). No change.

I've run AdAware, Avast, CCleaner, Malware Bytes, Bit Defender, possibly others I'm forgetting just now?...nothing I've run has found *anything* suspicious.

Any idea what has gone wrong, I'd appreciate the help! Thx

Thanks, and no I haven't checked with others. But, my speeds are consistently very good - just the function of my browsers is garbage for some reason. Makes zero sense...especially after what you have done...re-install...no extensions etc...From dictation.
My own experience indicates that it has something to do with the time of day and how many other people are using the Internet in this area.
Also, I have other family members that also use mine Internet to watch videos and play games. It seems this also SLOWS down the Internet.
As far as I can TELL, speed test is not reveal whether or not you're having some local congestion because a lot of people being on the Internet. What I'm trying to say is that I am rather suspicious about the speed tests, I don't think they show how much can just can and coalition is occurring in your normal use.
Here is a link that expresses some of the doubts I have about local Internet service and how speed is measured.

So far, I have not come up with an easy answer. But I do know my Internet speed appears to be better during the early morning hours. But the speed tests do not really sure this, but I can see the difference when I'm trying to watch a video.

Solve : Google Detected Unusual Traffic?

Answer»

Just a few minutes ago when I tried to use the Google search engine it took me to a page ASKING me for a captcha to prove I was not a robot. It also explained that it detected unusual traffic from my IP address. I tried to use the engine about three or four times before it disappeared and I could use Google normally again.

Since it went away does that mean I can ignore it or should I be concerned that something could be wrong with the router or any of my network devices?Anyone ELSE using your network/internet CONNECTION to do stuff that would flag it?My parents and sister. I'm pretty sure they don't do anything to do that. My sister has a boyfriend who has a tablet he SUES here. I think since he uses it here he must be using the network. It's been like that for a couple of months now and I have no idea what he does on it.

We also have a neighbour who knows our password but he lives like fifteen minutes away from here.See Here...I always get that message when I go to Google using Tor, which is why I chose DuckDuckGo, which doesn't seem to mind.
I don't use tor or any VPN. Which makes this especially odd. But what's even odder is that they just stopped. I can use google fine now with no message like it from them.I got a feeling more people are using your internet than you think...If this is the case what is your advice? And how can I confirm for certain that our internet is being sponged?Put a router password on it and give it only to family members.Check your settings and software for vulnerabilities. It is very risky to keep your internet so open. Put strong passwords everywhere you can and change privacy settings. The router is a device that can be exploited. Change your password occasionally and share them with your family membersKinda what was suggested...back in February...

Solve : Ram/CPU resources?

Answer»

Wondered if Firefox was using to much ram/cpu, I checked task manager & saw a 'trillion' items. Don't even know what most of it is ; startups, also. What to keep intact, what to GET rid of ? Wen in IDLE, the load on the CPU is very light. So it MAY be you have some backround taks the is doing some kind of job. Like a vius scan. Or a download. Or a automatic uMicrosoft Windows XP Home Edition date.
What happens if you reboot and discoue from the internet?A trillion is alot...wanna MAYBE provide more details ? ?

BTW it ain't all FireFox's faultMany background processes are related to programs you are running all the time, software and other programs OS runs. BUT unfortunately, there is a lot of malicious files that can use your CPU and appear in the Task Manager as running in the background. I would advise you to fully scan your PC with anti-malware or alternative malware fighting program so you can see which ones are safe and which ones are not.
You can also manually check the location of the concerning file. And then you DETERMINE if it is essential or notHave you compared Fire Fox to other browsers?

Solve : Can't view sites in history when offline?

Answer» BROWSER version: IE 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633
Xp Home

For some months my Mum has been unable to see sites in her history list when offline. Her home page doesn't show up, just a 'Web page unavailable offline' page and the entries in her history list are light grey and not available.

In Internet Options, days to keep pages in history is 307, check newer version is every time ie is started and the temp int folder has been allocated 6867mb. In Connections it is Dial when network not present.

I had the same problem once only on my computer with XP Pro and I fiddled with these settings for about 10 MINUTES getting nowhere. Then it came GOOD even though I had done nothing new in that 10th minute.

Thank youmaybe the service pack two has caused this?Barbara.....Ok .....here's what to try.....open explorer.....go up tp the top and click on favourites..Click add to favourites......when add favourites box opens .....put a check mark in "make available offline"...then click customize and let the wizard do the rest.
As far as SP2 is concerned it should work as I have outlined .....I have it on my pc and it works just fine. As far as you pc with XP pro on it .....follow the same instructions .........and SP2 update hasnt been released yet for your XP pro ........it will be coming soon.

Hope this helps
dl65 Hello
Thank you Merlin_2 and dl65. Isn't the advice about the add favorites wizard specific to the particular site one is looking at? I have never done that wizard and I can see all the pages in my history. So what can it be that causes none to be viewable on my mother's computer? I think she has done more WINDOWS updates than I have if that does make a difference.
Thank you

Solve : Win Explorer?

Answer»

I still seem to have the KERNAL32.dll problem and here is more info. The message generally occurs when I exit IE. I have been looking at some mesages posted here and note that there are other browsers than can be used, such as FOXFIRE. If I should install it and am happy with it can I somehow delete Internet Explorer? I do have netscape on the computer but generally use it as an E-mail ramp. I've looked in the add/remove folder but do not see it there. More than anything I would like to find the cause of my problem. When I do exit IE it sometimes seems to lock up. When I use the Ctrl/Alt/delete buttons it will generally end the task but it SHUTS down most of the system drivers. I then must re-start to get the drivers up and running again. I'm fairly confident that I had this problem once before and resolved it but cannot remember the fix. HELP !!!!!

I am running Win ME and IE 5.5. I've tried to upgrade newer versions of IE and the download happens OK but when I try to setup I get an error message that I cannot remember right now. I know that doesn't help but thats where I'm at right now.scan for trojans>http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/.......did ie6 install....what anti-virus program is it NORTON?....You can uninstall Internet Explorer from the software list. However, I recommend you keep it installed because not all websites are made for Firefox. However, the chances of running into such a website are quite slim and Firefox's superiority makes up for that.

Rather than uninstalling Internet Explorer, I suggest you SET Mozilla Firefox as your default browser. It will ask if you want to do so when you launch Firefox.Yes I do have Norton AV on the system. Came with the computer. Haven't heard much good about it.LSC9901........If you have Norton 2004 ....it's a very good program .....a bit of a resource hog ,but if you set it up properly and make sure you have it configued to get the auto UPDATES it will not let you down.
*****Check the subscription lenght ....it may only be good for 90 days******

cheers dl65 I just ran Stinger and found a w32Bagle virus. It also deleted it. Dunno if that will help but it surely will not hurt to be rid of it.which goes to show that norton should have found it...?

Solve : Internet Related -> Firewall?

I am quite interested in what kind of Firewalls people use (Software) and the reason why they prefer that particulair Firewall.

I myself use Zone Alarm, I have yet to try another brand but I find Zone Alarm (Registered) to be very user FRIENDLY. The only downside of this program is that it tends to make certain full screen appliances crash when it asks if they are allowed to connect to the Internet for the first time.Hi,

I use it. Dont have that problem. Never had it. Have full screen apps using for 1st time, all the time. Suggest you read the manual or online help to resolve your problem.

NONSENSE! ZoneAlarm (free) works perfectly with Win2k-SP4, WinXP-SP2, Win98SE.

Solve : Image toggle? Store Cool? Showdent.dll? What??

Answer»

Among my Explorer 6.0.29xxx "Add-ons" is an item called "Store Cool" which refers to the showdent.dll file, which is located in the C:\Programs\Stupid Ford directory which has one other file called equpload.bin in it. Norton scans them as clean. I have the add-on disabled SINCE I have no idea what it is, and Google SEARCHES return only 1 tech-guys item, that being a log-file showing someone else had Stupid Ford as a running process (I don't). What brought me to this was a search for the web accessory "toggle images.exe" which is MISSING on my system...and M'soft searches about this PROBLEM are UNPRODUCTIVE. And THAT, in turn, was PROMPTED by images not loading on web pages (some do, some don't) which was the original problem I was trying to fix. Any help for this, uh, er, situation?? Thanks!

Solve : PLEASE HELP! neither IE OR Firefox will work. ONLY Opera??!?

Ok. So, Firefox & Internet Explorer DO NOT work. When I try using them, they say "unable to connect" & "Page cannot be displayed". But, Opera works just fine. My internet works fine. I can get on AIM & stuff like that. It's just those 2 browsers. Personally, I don't like IE anyways, but FIREFOX is my default browser & it won't work! IE stopped working a few months ago out of no where & I didn't think anything of it because I don't use it often. But, then out of no where, Firefox does the same thing. Solve : Video stalls my browser permanently?

Answer»

I can't turn them on. When I try it says that "windows updates have been DISABLED by the administrator" but I am the administrator. This is part of the problem I was fixing when I messed up my video. I would get this message as well as other messages that said that "this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions..." and "registry editor has been disabled by the administrator" I USED regcure and solved the last two, but the windows updates are still disabled. You say, that now, you DO have an access to "regedit".
If so, go there, and check these settings:

1.Click START, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.

2.Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER, expand Software, expand Microsoft, expand Windows, expand CurrentVersion, and then expand Policies.

3.If the Windows Update key exists, click Windows Update.

4.In the right pane, if the DisableWindowsUpdateAccess DWORD value exists, right-click DisableWindowsUpdateAccess, and then click Delete.

5.Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER, expand Software, expand Microsoft, expand Windows, expand CurrentVersion, and then expand Policies.

6.If the Explorer key exists, click Explorer.

7.In the right pane, if a DisableWindowsUpdateAccess DWORD exists, right-click DisableWindowsUpdateAccess, and then click Delete.

8.In the right pane, if a NoWindowsUpdate DWORD value exists, right-click NoWindowsUpdate, and then click Delete.

9.Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, expand Software, expand Microsoft, expand Windows, expand CurrentVersion, and then expand Policies.

10.If the Explorer key exists, click Explorer.

11.In the right pane, if a DisableWindowsUpdateAccess DWORD exists, right-click DisableWindowsUpdateAccess, and then click Delete.

12.In the right pane, if a NoWindowsUpdate DWORD value exists, right-click NoWindowsUpdate, and then click Delete.

13.Close Registry Editor, and then restart your computer.
when I try to turn them on it says "windows updates have been disabled by the administrator". I am the administarator and I have never disabled them. You may have some malware on your computer, then.

Solve : Can't view Internet pages after Internet Explorer 7 updates.....?

Answer»

I a Dell Inspiron E1505. Just recently, I upgraded to Internet Explorer 7. After IE7 automatically downloaded some upgrades several days later, I have been unable to view windows...

Here's the kicker...I can get online, but every site I go to, I'm "unable to view the page". There's the typical blurb about how to check and fix, then at the bottom it says "cannot find sever DNS error..."

The strange thing is, I can use my IM and can see that I am clearly connected to the internet. I just can't view internet pages.

I've talked to DEll, and because my 30 day warrantee has run out, it will cost $250 to get support.

I've also reset my defaults and removed IE7.
I've tryed loading Foxfire, but it does the same thing.
The computer won't let me retrieve from a prior date because to many down loads have been done.

Because of these IE7 updates, I think something has been altered in my computer programming that won't let me view internet pages.

Can someone help?!

not sure what the problem could be. can use messenger and send e-mails but when I try to access the internet I get the page that says it can't connect.

Any ideas of what the problem may be? I called my internet provider but since it wasn't a problem with them thier response was basically take it to the shop...i am a college student so extra cash is hard to find.

Any tips, ideas or suggestions WOULD be appreciated!Since your internet connection is working (email, messenger), first thing to try would be to use another browser, just to see if any web page will open from there.
What browser are you using now? What WINDOWS version?i believe it it is the most recent version if IE...IE7.
not sure how to get another browser downloaded as I can't connect to the internet...any suggestions?

If it's IE7 (to check, open IE, click Help>About).
GO Tools>Internet Options>Advanced TAB, and click on "Reset" button.I'm having this problem, too. I updated to IE7 about a week ago, when IE7 downloaded updates, I was no longer able to view window pages, but could use both AIM and MySpace IM.

My computer shows a clear SIGNAL to my wireless router. I've even tried a hard wire straight to the modem. Still the same result.
I think it was a problem with one of the IE7 updates.

Something has messed with the programming inabling us to view internet pages.
I've tried loading another browser (firefox) and still the same result.
I've reset my browser settings.
I've turned off my firewall protection.
I've had my company IT guy give me all the basics.

This is clearly in the computer, not a connection or server problem.

Solve : IE has stopped working.?

Answer» HELLO all. Im sure my newbishness will show itself soon ENOUGH. Ive only had a PC for about a year and this the first problem ive had so im lost. If i click on any link, as long as the link is in the same window, i have no problem. But any link that tries to open in a new window, my SCREEN locks up for 30 SECONDS or so and then i get a "Internet Explorer Has Stopped Working" message followed by " Internet Explorer Is Restarting" message, which then takes me back to my homepage. Any suggestions? I have one suggestion. Download Firefox here.

In my opinion it is a better web browser than IE.

However if you would like to continue using IE just let us know which version you are running. If it's IE 7 than you can just open things in a new tab as opposed to a new window. That should eliminate your problem because then there never be a new window opening up.Welcome aboard

Microsoft loses appeal against £342m EU fine over software sharing

Microsoft was left reeling yesterday after a bruising defeat at the hands of European judges who upheld a record fine on the software giant for abusing its dominant market position to crush competition.

In a landmark ruling by the European Court of First Instance, regulators won a comprehensive victory in a nine-year battle with the American company to force it to share its secret software codes and sell its products separately rather than in packages.

Microsoft executives SAID that they would comply with the European Commission’s demands to open up their products to greater competition, but vowed to study the 248-page judgment before deciding whether to appeal.

Anti-trust lawyers were divided last night over the wider implications but agreed Microsoft would have to make dramatic changes. Microsoft faces further complaints about the exclusivity of its Office and Outlook software, both of which it may now have to make much more open to competition.

The judges in Luxembourg supported a fine of €497 million (£345 million) and confirmed the Commision’s ruling that by bundling up Windows MEDIA Player with its Windows operating system, Microsoft had damaged rival media players’ ability to compete. They ALSO upheld an order by the Commission in 2004 that Microsoft supply technical information to other companies, such as Sun Microsystems, so that they can make their servers compatible with Windows-based software.

Microsoft had argued that owners of Windows-based PCs were not compelled to use its media player and that by sharing protocols, which were protected by patents, it was being forced to give away valuable intellectual property at little or no cost. “The court observes that it is beyond dispute that, in consequence of the tying, consumers are unable to acquire the Windows operating system without simultaneously acquiring Windows Media Player,” the judgment said. “In that regard, the court considers that neither the FACT that Microsoft does not charge a separate price for Windows Media Player nor the fact that consumers are not obliged to use that media player is irrelevant.”

Neelie Kroes, the Competition Commissioner, said: “Microsoft cannot abuse its Windows monopoly to exclude competitors in other markets.” She said that the verdict should see Microsoft’s 95 per cent share of the PC software market reduce, but would not name a target figure.

Microsoft has argued that the ruling will stifle its creativity and that of other successful companies by forcing them to hand innovative secrets straight to rivals. Brad Smith, Microsoft’s GENERAL counsel, vowed to comply with the demands.

Microsoft lost on all major points, winning only a minor victory on the technical issue of the independent trustee appointed to oversee the company’s implementation of the ruling.

Christos Genakos, a research associate at the Centre for Economic Performance, said: “This ruling has reestablished the credibility of EU’s competition policy and proves decisively that there is scope for intervention even in fast-evolving industries.”

Maurits Dolmans, a lawyer with the City firm Clearly Gottlieb, said: “The Commission is not going to suddenly regulate everybody. Microsoft is really an exception, there is no other company in the world that has so many products out there for so many consumers – 90 per cent plus of the market, close to a billion PCs out there with Microsoft products.”

European Union regulators are “studying” a consumer complaint that Microsoft Corp. forces computer makers to sell machines that are preloaded with Windows, excluding other operating systems such as Linux.

The European Commission, the EU’s antitrust regulator, discussed the issue in a Wednesday letter to the consumer that sent the complaint. The consumer complained that Microsoft makes users pay for Windows even if they want to remove it or buy a computer without the software.

“We received the complaint, and we’re studying it,” Jonathan Todd, a commission spokesman, said Friday

I have IE 6 and just noticed that my horizontal scroll bar is missing. I need it often to move the PAGE to view the missing section. The side ones are there. SEE what is turned on under View...i believe the scrollbar only shows up when you get to a page wider than your screen...Patio is correct.
You may also have your browser in Full View. Hit F11. If it makes it even bigger, hit F11 ONE more time.

Solve : "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem..."?

Answer»

Within 5 minutes of logging into my e-mail account to check my mail, I get a window appearing with "Internet EXPLORER has encountered a problem and needs to close. If you were in the middle of something...." and then everything closes and goes straight back to desktop. If I re-open IMMEDIATELY it does the same thing. If I restart and then begin again, it does the same thing. One day the browser closed 5 times within 30 minutes. I've noticed that it doesn't do it as OFTEN if I don't stay logged in to Yahoo, but it still does it none the less. I have recently done a complete systemn restore/recovery, I have IE 7, WINDOWS XP, Panda antivirus/firewall 2007, (high protection) w/ recent scan of entire computer. Nothing out of the ordinary shows up on scans, don't know what else to do! Any suggestions welcomed and appreciated. Similar problem. Started happening with IE 6, upgraded to 7, still happening. Also have XP. Doesn't happen when I'm using Outlook or Netscape - only IE. Any help is greatly appreciated. Not sure about this one try MOZILLA
