Solve : Question about Internet IP Address?

Answer»

If the Internet Cafe is using Static IP, example: 192.168.0.1 to 0.22

Then the IP Addresses would be the same to OTHERS, example:

Workstation 1 -> Internet IP Address: 128.164.25.354
Workstation 2 -> Internet IP Address: 128.164.25.354
Workstation 3 -> Internet IP Address: 128.164.25.354
and so on...

If Dynamic IP, example: 203.164.23.15 to 23.30

The IP Addresses would be different from other computers, example:

Workstation 1 -> Internet IP Address: 205.264.256.123
Workstation 2 -> Internet IP Address: 205.164.268.346
Workstation 3 -> Internet IP Address: 128.164.25.354
and so on...

My question is Internet IP Address is different from Static and Dynamic?Explained the easy way here:
http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/N100048.aspBroni are you sure that URL will WORK?I did something wrong...Now, it should work.basically you had not COPIED the whole url , now its working
sorry i talked in between , now you both can carry on with the question I'm using Static type...Why if I'm using Static the Internet IP Address same with other computers? And why If I'm using Dynamic the Internet IP Address always change?Static belongs to your machine and doesn't change unless the ISP changes it...
Dynamic is ASSIGNED each time you LOG on depending on what's available and can change each time...
How are our grades doing so far ? ?

This particular IE error message is by far the most hated error to me (one of many reasons, I don't use IE), but anyway...
Try this:
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
On the Advanced tab, click to select the Disable Script Debugging check box in the Browsing section.
Click OK, and then restart Windows.

Debugging was already SELECTED. I do NOT want to use IE either but without even using the IE browser. It is TAKING over my whole drives.Quote

Solve : Links opening in new windows taking 10 minutes or more to open?

Answer»

If I already have a window open in internet explorer, I can move at the NORMAL speed from site to site. However, if I click on a link (any link) that opens a new window in internet explorer, it opens but the new window does not become active for at least 5 minutes, usually 10. If I right click the window from I suppose it's called the taskbar (at the bottom of the screen), it seems to HELP the new window become the priority task (even if no other tasks are competing) and the window begins to show the graphics of whatever website it is opening. However, I still can not scroll on this website for another 5 minutes or so. During this time while the new window is opening, you can not close that window unless you control alt delete and end the internet explorer effectively closing all internet exporer windows.

Help! What Windows version? What IE version?
What happens, when you RIGHT click on a link, and click "Open in a new window"?XP and I'm not sure how to find the version of IE since a right click and choosing properties doesn't seem to help me find out the version. I would have thought it would be listed under the heading "general" once you are in the properties, but apparently not.

ANYWAY, I tried to play a video from a PAGE and after the windows media player opened it gave me the below error message which I'm sure is related. I just don't know how to fix it.

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because a network error occurred. The server might not be available. VERIFY that you are connected to the network and that your proxy settings are correct.

Now I am definitely connected to the network while receiving this error message but don't have any idea how I might know if my proxy settings are correct or not.Let's do one thing at a time...
Quote

I'm not sure how to find the version of IE
In IE6, it should be under Help>About IE
In IE7, thanks to M$ "improvement", you have to click on ">>", here:

Then Help>About

Quote
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because a network error occurred. The server might not be available.
In most cases, that would be web site problem, not yours.
You can post that web site address, and I'll see, if I can get there.
As for proxies, most likely, you don't have to worry about them, if you are a home user.
What type of connection you have?

Solve : Im getting an error message that says?

Answer»

something about my browser settings won't allow me to be automatically redirected?? What does that mean?? When I log in to EBAY I put in my name and password and hit submit and then I have to click on a url to go to my ebay it won't automatically go there. It gives me that error message instead. I also can get into my yahoo mail but I can't delete it... It won't let me?? What's going on?? All I did was download a JAVA update. '

Thanks in Advance!
AmandaQuote

It gives me that error message instead
What does it say? Here's the entire messsage....

If you are seeing this page, your browser settings prevent you from automatically redirecting to a new URL.

Please click here to continue.

I've never gotten this message before.

Thanks!
AmandaIn IE go Tools>Internet Options, Security tab.
Set slider to "MEDIUM-High".I tried that and it didn't help. I also called my internet provider. The Tech guy walked me through a few things and they didn't help either. He says something is wrong with either my IE program or my pc itself. Since I've already scanned for spyware and VIRUSES and no viruses were found and spyware was removed what else could be causing this???

Should I just give up and reformat?? Would it help to use one of those registry cleaner programs?? I mean could my registry be messed up somehow??

Thanks! It's always time to reformat, and leave those registry cleaners alone, for now.
What Windows version, and what IE version are you using?I have Windows XP and IE 7.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide! In IE, go Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab. Click on "Reset" button. That didn't work either.

AmandaCouple of other things to try....
I assume, you can go to some web pages, but not secure ones, like E-Bay, right?

Go Tools>Internet Options>General, and delete Temp files.

Go Tools>Internet Options>Security tab. Scroll down to "Scripting".
You'll see 5 subdirectories. Make sure, that "ticks" are set as follows:
- Enable
- Prompt
- Disable
- Disable
- EnableCorrect. It's the secure sites that I'm having trouble with.

I deleted my temp files and my settings were already set to what you posted above.

Anything else you can think of?? This is so ODD. I mean it was working just fine and then did this suddenly yesterday.

Thanks!OK, next...
Two things:
1. In IE go Tools>Internet Options, Security tab.
Set slider even lower to "Medium".

2. If that doesn't help, download, and install FIREFOX: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
This way, we'll know, if it's IE problem, or something else.
Anyway, it's always a good idea to have two browsers installed.
Okay my IE still isn't working right however, the Mozilla Firefox does work it's just slow.

AmandaI'd like to take a look at your HijackThis log. Download it from here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download5554.html, and post its log at "Computer Viruses and Spyware".

Solve : Keep getting Microsoft Internet Explorer error boxes?

They cover up 70% of the SCREEN and also say "about blank" right below it. The screen is blank. I thought it might have SOMETHING to do with my pop up blocker and disabled it but it didn't help. It doesn't do it all the time but more than enough to be aggravating. It looks to me, like your browser has been hijacked.

Solve : drop down screen?

Answer»

my drop down screens for the state and date are blank . why?Since you haven't EVEN told us where you are experiencing this problem, it is pretty hard to say. MAYBE you should give us something to go on.
Like where are you getting this problem?
What version of windows are you using?
When did this problem start?
What browser are you using?
Etc.
windows xp, using IE7 when i go on the internet to fill out forms the drop down screens are all blankDoes this occur on all websites with drop down selections? Does the same problem occur in other browsers, Such as Firefox?yes it OCCURS in all web sites, we don't us firefox, it's a pain you can't order any thing or register for anythingWell you could try reinstalling / repairing IE7, if you can't then Google it, I'm sure you'll find a guide.

You may have adware / toolbars that are affecting its operation.

If you still can't resolve the problem, start using firefox, it's a lot more userfriendly and has less vulnerabilities.Naw, DON'T fix that piece of junk IE7!

Just get the Google Toolbar. Fill in the info and it will fill in any box that is yellow on the page. You can even put a credit card account on it, but you will need to use a password to use that so that prying people don't use it.

Works in IE or Firefox! Takes up a small row and has a search box, bookmarks, autolink, spellcheck and popup blocker(on or off) built in. FREE

TedSet IE7 to the default settings, I'd be very surprised if it didn't work after that.
Can you put up the address od a website that is giving you the problem?Check here:

Solve : Can't Email Attachment?

Answer»

Good Morning,
I am on a Dell Mini 9 using XP and IE7. My SECURITY is NOD32 (small footprint).
I've been able to send attachments from email accounts until a few days ago.
Now I always GET a error from all saying they couldn't get the whole file to check my connectivity. I check diagnostics and it says I am fine.
What could I possibly have done to change my email situation?
I've disabled the email checker on NOD. I keep temp cache deleted. I even TRIED disabling NOD completely.
Thank you for any suggestions. How large are the attachments ? ?
Some ISP's put a limit on their size...a phone call to them will let you KNOW what size you can safely attach...Thank you. I tried the same various email providers I use and the same jpg's I had been emailing several days before. Size 579kb.

Solve : Change IE file preferences?

Answer»

See if anyone can help me on this one.

Trying to determine if it's even possible to change how Internet Explorer opens external files (such as a .PDF, .DOC, ETC.). In Firefox, Opera, and other browsers it's pretty simple to change it so a .PDF opens a save prompt instead of opening the actual PDF in the browser. But for the life of me I can't seem to find a method of doing the same thing in Internet Explorer.

If anyone happens to know of a method please let me know.

Are you saying, you want to have pop-up window (open/save) showing?Quote from: Broni on March 03, 2009, 12:46:17 PM

Are you saying, you want to have pop-up window (open/save) showing?

Correct. Without right-clicking and choosing save as or save. For example, in Firefox this can be adjusted through Tools / Options / Applications.

This should explain: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/reset-opensave-choice-for-internet-explorer-downloads-in-vista/Not sure if this is exactly what I'd need SINCE Adobe Acrobat PDF files *I believe* are handled through a plug-in / BHO and not Windows Explorer. In addition this doesn't apply for Windows XP.

I've done a lot of searching and can't seem to come up with anything maybe it's not possible in IE like other browsers.

Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>File Types>PDF>Advanced>Confirm open after download.Hey Fed, that's what I thought was going to do it as well but on this test machine it didn't work. My only assumption if this really does work is maybe that the computer needs to be restarted, which is the only thing I haven't tried since I'm not yet able to restart. Another POSSIBILITY is to UNREGISTER the ActiveX component IE is trying to use to view the PDF. My guess is it would be a DLL in the adobe folder... I don't GET into the habit of memorizing CLSIDs though I'm using W2K/IE6 with Foxit to view PDF files.
Changing the Windows Explorer setting toggles the 'save prompt' for me.
Perhaps a temporary run with Foxit?

It get's downloaded automatically, then the stupid end-user executes it by clicking the link.

Sorry if I'm bumping a DEAD thread, I haven't been on in over 2 months... a downloaded script STILL cannot access the local filesystem.I have yet to try the final release of Chrome. I was really excited when the beta launched, and I used it for a few days.

The browser itself was pretty good. I'm just too attached to Firefox I GUESS. There are some Firefox extensions I've become fond of, such as Linkification and Foxmarks. Don't think I could live without Foxmarks.

Solve : Weird IE Question?

Answer»

Hello to all - first post here and I think that it's great that something like this is available.

Ok - my question might be simple, but it's bugging me to no end.

Like I should, I do routine PM on my laptop (DELL Latitude w/Windows XP/IE 6) - this also includes routine PM on IE also. I do the standard easy stuff, cleaning cookies and whatnot - which also includes clearing out the URL history in the address bar. Now - this is were it starts to get strange.

I know that to clear out the URL history you need to GO to Tools, IE Options, Content, Autocomplete - clear passwords/forms.... and that works except for one web address. It's not a bad one (actually something my daughter looked up - some Barbie website) - but it intrigues me that I can clear all of them but THAT ONE?

Any ideas?

All HELP is most appreciated.Try CCleaner.

Don't use the registry section unless you know what you're doing!KPAC,

Thanks for the reply and I DL'd it and it's still there. It clears everything else out from the address bar but that one website?

  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in Notepad.
  • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or required by the system.
Thanks for your all your help, I ended up getting rid of it.

Unfortunately, I ended up picking up some adaware and when I got rid of that apparently the stray URL went with it.

Anyway, everything is as it should be - I suppose.

Thanks,

2. Now open it.

3. Now right click any link on the page, choose Open In New Window....don't maximize it....instead, use the mouse to RESIZE it to what you want it to be.

4. Now close the FIRST window you opened, and then close the new one you just resized.

5. Reopen IE from the shortcut icon again, and all windows from now on will be the size you chose and created. Thanks, works greatYou're welcome...

Solve : Opera site advisor??

Answer»

Very simple...Shouldn't opera have macafee site advisor too? Does it? Can it? Does it have WOP? Can it?I use opera. And I don't THINK it has it, cause the websites i go to are not blocked

WOT won't work with Opera, because Opera doesn't use add-ons. It USES widgets, and this is what WOT people have to say:
http://www.mywot.com/en/forum/1398-can-wot-be-made-for-opera
Quote

We are aware of Opera's widgets, but they are very limited compared to real add-ons in other browsers.

For EXAMPLE, while the latest widget specification finally allows preferences to be stored locally, widgets still cannot be integrated to the browser's user interface, nor can they access the DOM for websites you are browsing. In fact, I'm not even sure if a widget can tell which website you are visiting.

Therefore, using the widget API for creating a full add-on for Opera isn't really feasible at the moment.
So MUCH for Opera being the better browser.... Anyone said that?

Solve : Safari 4 Beta?

I download SAFARI 4 Beta. The window version. At least Apple got rid of the UGLY gray color of the browser but why is Safari eerily copying Google Chrome? Tabs on Top and even that page ICON you see on the right of the URL bar has same Google Chrome Icon?

At least it starts up and loads pages fast!!

What do you guys think?Wow..... Run out of ideas, did they?Definitely not, Safari far exceeds Google Chrome - and that's in the beta stage too!Chrome just came out too. It's still got quite a lot of work.Chrome is webkit BASED and Safari is cloning Chrome. Funny.

Solve : Churning Noise when surfing internet?

Answer»

Hey KPAC,

Here is why that log may be short.... This machine "crashed" about 3 weeks ago, and I could not get the operating system to load at all. So I erased my hard drive, and reinstalled Windows XP. I havent loaded hardly ANYTHING on the machine, except to surf the INTERNET, and it worked "OK" for those 3 weeks, now this.

I'll do what you say in your prev. post and get back ASAP.

Thanks for your HELP by the way!OK, I checked that box.

Is there anything ELSE to do, or just close out of the program?Quote from: D-Nut on March 17, 2009, 12:34:39 PM

Okay then. That explains it.

You can now close HJT and restart Internet Explorer to see if it worked.

EDIT: Sorry...Did you click "Fix selected"? I'm sorry if I didn't tell you to click that. If you didn't, just re-run the scan, and check it again. Then click Fix Selected.

Solve : AC_RunActiveContent.js error message?

Answer»

I recently had to reload my computer and now, when I surf the NET, I'm getting the following message on some (but not all) websites:

Windows Internet Explorer
This Page Requires AC_RunActiveContent.js

I was originally running Win XP SP2 with IE 6.0. To fix the above problem I updated to Win XP SP3 and IE 7.0. However, the updates did not solve the problem. I have searched the net for a solution but the only thing I can find relates to site developers.

I have ensured that Active Scripting is enabled for my browser.

Does anyone have a solution for me?

Thanks for your help. It's most likely web page problem.
If they didn't install Adobe Flash Active Content Update extension (info: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=7c29e252&sliceId=1), you'll be getting the above error.
Just in case, see, if your Flash is up to date: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/Thanks for the info. I updated Flash but the problem continues. While it could POSSIBLY be the sites problem, I somehow doubt it. The website is a major international site so I doubt they would forget such a KEY step. I emailed their help desk and they said the problem is at my end. Any other suggestions? Can you post couple of links?I have noticed the problem on only one site so far and it is www.lavalife.com. When I view the site as a non-member I can't reproduce the error. I can only get the error message to appear when I'm logged in. I talked to a friend who is a site member and she does not receive the error message (she's running Win XP). Strange and frustrating. If it's just one site, and on a top of it, it can't be checked without logging in, it's hard to advice, but I rather STAND by my initial response.
Did you try Firefox there?I am having this same error message when I access my Photobucket account. It never happened before just a few days ago.

I use Windows XP and Mozilla Firefox.

I did recently have an Adobe update.Dlen

2#: i should have installed the program Acronis too and make another backup of the PC to a EXTERNAL Hard Drive.

Solve : I'm Getting Errors In My Internet Explorer??

Answer»

Hi, I being getting errors on my nieces computer Internet Explorer it SAYS: The specified module could not be found and I can't go anywhere on Internet Explorer at all. I check the internet CONNECTION is fine but I can't find Internet Explorer on my add and remove programs too. The computer is a DELL OPTIPLEX GX270 P4 3.0GHz 1024MB 40GB DVD/CD-RW with windows XP on it too. My two nieces can not go anywhere on the internet at all. ANYBODY know what to do? I try any suggestions. I also reinstall windows XP too and still get this coming up. You wont find internet explorer in the add and remove programs simply because Microsoft have integrated it into the operating system, it is unfortunately a part of the desktop.

You could try an alternative browser like firefox from mozilla, but with no way to surf the web from that laptop, downloading it and transferring it over will be a complete pain, I suggest downloading it and burning it onto CD-Rom not a USB pen as that way you can install it off the CD without the dangers of whatever is THATS causing you PROBLEMS transferring itself onto the USB (Just in case its viral.) a free computer CD from down the newsagents with firefox on it might be an even quicker bet!

If it still refuses to work, you may want to consider trying a Linux live boot CD and boot the computer off of that and see if it suddenly springs into life.

Some anti-viral rescue CD's wouldn't go amiss either; http://www.techmixer.com/repair-and-rescue-windows-os-using-trinity-rescue-kit-live-cd/

Has it got anything installed like a firewall or anything that could be interfering with the normal operations of the browser? Sometimes a mis-configured firewall setting can be the cause of all the woes!

Sometimes people install crazy security configurations on their machines without meaning too and when they go to access the internet, they see the firewall pop-up with something about port 53 (DNS) and hit always deny thinking it's evil hackers trying to get into their machine, when in fact its the domain name resolution host and they've just gone and blocked it without a second thought. Go to Start/Run and type in iexplorer.exe and hit Enter...
If this works than simply create a new Desktop icon and delete the old one.Hi, Well now I can't get my internet connected at all on it now. It don't show up on my network connections at all before I had it up and now I don't. Anybody know how to set up network connection on it? I got two other computers hook up on this router. On every computer connected to my router it thinks that I am in france! Every single computer!

Maybe check your router SETTINGS? There could be some setting that's triggering this to happen with Google. Otherwise my only guess is that it has something to do with your ISP.Well my router broke. Kept DCing me every 2 seconds so I need to GET a new one anyways. It still has something that says go to google france though so its not the router (im connected to the modem right now)regional settings?where WOULD that be?XP:Control PANEL->regional options

Vista:Control Panel->Clock Language and region

nope its set to USAahh, ok. since it's the same when you connect to the modem it might be your isp.I'd imagine it has something to do with your ISP / Router simply because when your friend connects to your network he's having the same issue.2 people I know with roadrunner are experiencing the same exact thing so its the isp

They also changed my ip address to all 3 digit numbers where before some of them used to be 2

Solve : Can connect to network, can't open browser, help please?

Answer»

hi, ok i have read all the faq's etc.. and tried various troubleshooting..

hope it's something really simple

for the last 2 weeks, i have been able to connect to wireless network, no problem. but whenever i open my interent browser, it always comes up with the "this page cannot be displyed" page.

really annoying, it's on an XP system and of course it's Internet Explorer. i've tried deleting some web-related problems, i don't know too much about LAN settings etc.. but i'm sure that is not the problem.

please help me and send some advice.

many thanks,

alexWhich version of Internet Explorer (6,7,8 - I doubt you have the finished version of 8, it was only made available a few days ago)? Have you checked LAN proxy settings? Have you tried a different browser, Portable Firefox run from a USB drive for example, if you can't access the internet to download anything on the machine itself? Using a third-party firewall? Lots of things to consider....

To check proxy settings;

Open Internet Explorer.

Click the TOOLS button, and then click Internet Options.

Click the Connections tab, and then click LAN settings.

If "USE a proxy server for your LAN" is ticked, untick it.
thanks brundle, no i checked proxy settings, nothing wrong there.

so i went and downloaded FireFox and installed it - EXactly the same problem "Page Not Found"

I have checked security options - i tried turning firewall on and off. my virus protection is out of date - could this be to do with anything?

also, should have mentioned this before, all this happened since i tried to INSTALL a Wireless Router, i had problems TRYING to connect to 192.168.1.1 (a common problem). is there something wrong with my default addresses, command prompt.

thanks for your time Could well be to do with wireless. Does it work if you connect to the router with a cable? Do ipconfig /all from the command line from a cabled connection, then disconnect it and do ipconfig /all with a wireless connection. The important addresses are IP address and Default Gateway, DNS servers is also useful to note. What are the numbers, and do they differ depending on wired/wireless connection? Make and model of router would useful to know too.

do you only have 1 fire wall installed if so i would run your modem supplier disk again its seems it MAY be your itp is the could be cause itp address may have slipped up some how.

Solve : Firefox URL Search Hooks?

Answer»

Does ANYBODY know how to disable or delete Firefox search hooks?

Usually in Firefox if you want to search for something and type a keyword or phrase in the address bar, it does a Google I'm Feeling Lucky search and brings you to the BEST result. I installed a toolbar recently but I didn't like it, so I first disabled it, then uninstalled it. This feature (which I want to get rid of) was added to Firefox because of the toolbar, but I figured if I uninstall the toolbar, then this will go AWAY. Well it didn't!

This is Firefox 3.0.6, by the way. Maybe if I update FF, will this go away? What toolbar are you TALKING about?Uninstall 3.0.6. If you choose to save your settings during uninstall, the issue will return. So, if you can handle it...uninstall everything including your settings.

The latest version is 3.0.8 available from Major Geeks: Firefox 3.0.8

Solve : .mht files?

Answer»

.mht files are used by default in Opera. They are web-archive files with images etc all stored in one file. Does anybody know if they are compressed or how they compare with ordinary .htm files and their folders (size-wize, I MEAN)?

Any thoughts?MHT files are also the default saved HTML PAGE for IE7. They don't open in Firefox THOUGH, unfortunately they only show the HTML code.Though Firefox doesn't provide native support for viewing or writing MHTML files, the Mozilla Archive Format (MAF) Firefox extension can help you. Once installed in Firefox, this extension lets you save Web pages in the open-source .MAFF format. It can also read and write .MHT files, which IE USERS can open.

Solve : Chrome PDF viewer addon - Very Thankful to Chrome?

Answer»

I have to give chrome a thumbs up today for having a PDF addon.

I was on a network today where I am not an admin, and knew that they allowed users to install Chrome through GP restriction/allowances on laptops, and the minute you logoff the user profile doesn't save changes. I needed to print my plane tickets which I saved as a PDF from my laptop in hotel where I didn't have a printer, but saved them as a PDF using PDF7.

The work station I am on has NO PDF handler software at all. I was surprised.

So I went on a google search to see if there was a web based PDF viewer of some kind to load my PDF into the browser since there is no local PDF handler application. I found this chrome addon and knew that I could install Chrome browser to workstation through limited permissions. It worked out awesome. After it said it was installed I went to browser window for Chrome and typed E: to get to the USB stick and open the PDF file with my boarding pass and print to the printer that this laptop in the facility is hooked up to.

While I didn't care too much for chrome prior, I am very thankful for this addon for it that allowed me to print my boarding passes.

Here is the addon I used. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/pdf-viewer/oemmndcbldboiebfnladdacbdfmadadm?hl=en

Figured I'd share this in case anyone else wants to open PDFs who might run into a same problem of no PDF handler or do without Adobe Reader and the checkbox that they try to get you to miss to install bundleware.Chrome can open PDFs out of the box, you shouldn't need an extension for it.Interesting that they'd have this addon if its already there to support it.I'm personally fed up with Chrome...and i've given it many chances to change that.Quote from: patio on September 03, 2015, 01:08:55 PM

Patio, would say a little more, ie a few examples of what you do not like about Chrome? Personally I never got the WHOLE browser thing. Many folks hating on IE and loving Firefox and Chrome. Gave them a try and could not see any advantage. Am now using Edge and like it very much. I only have one problem...need IE to correctly see Verizon webmail. The latter does not bother me because I use Live Mail and go into the Verizon server very infrequently to see an OLD archived email. Comes down to preference.

I think all the browsers we have suck far worse than you would expect given how many years they have been around. Part of the problem is the shift from web sites to web "Applications" and web "Services"; This led to a shift in focus from presenting content to manipulating content, and a less-than-graceful adaptation of the existing technologies designed for presentation to work with manipulation. Right now the Firefox instance I am using is using over a Gigabyte of memory. according to about:config, each tab is using more RAM than was typically even available on most PCs in 1996, and this is owing to the changing nature of what the web is- and the fact that nobody really knows what it is.

Many swear by Firefox/Chrome/etc. I use Firefox myself but that's mostly a force of habit then it is due to any preference for it. many insist that Internet Explorer is terrible; WITNESS the many silly images and jokes about IE being slower than the other browsers, which presumably is coming form people who last used it with version 6. This seems to conflict with my own experience where Firefox is brought to it's knees by javascript that refuses to stop executing and requires it to be force-terminated.

The worst is when folks pull out things like browser tests or "standards" tests. The first problem is that how compliant a browser is with a standard tells you nothing about how easy it is to use; nor does it even tell you what the standard is, or even if it is good itself. If a standard said "if the user clicks to quickly the PC must explode" I don't think I would be annoyed that it wasn't implemented. Another issue is that usually the people creating these standards are biased. For example, there was a HTML5Test created some time ago, and when IE9 was released, it scored higher than every other browser. What happened? the creators purposely adjusted the test so IE scored the worst again, mostly by testing draft specifications only implemented in chrome or Firefox that weren't even part of any standard!

Realistically disk space is seldom at a premium for the space used for a browser, so I just install all of the main ones; Firefox, Chrome and Opera alongside IE for the most part. If something doesn't seem to work properly in Firefox I switch to another browser to find out if it is a browser issue.
It's like Antivirus, people get WAY to opinionated over it and spend ages arguing that the specific browser they use is best. In the end it is entirely down to personal preference. We are at the stage now that all current browsers perform well enough to be totally usable.

I keep seeing people who are using IE being told "Stop using IE, use Firefox/Chrome/Opera.etc" - Drives me mental, sure IE used to be terrible compared to other browsers but nowadays it performs fine, if a person is happy with whatever browser they are using, don't tell them to stop using it!

Solve : Edge Browser?

Answer»

I have been playing around with the Edge Browser having removed IE 11.
I have found that if you bring the web page up you want like
Face Book (social)
Outlook.com (mail)
Youtube (Entertainment)
Google (Browser)
Twitter (social)
Groove (Music)

Right click and add them to the Favourites Bar,
They show up on your home menu found at top of page like msn, or bing once there all you have to do is click on the one you want and it will take you straight to the page you want.
Thought it might help some members.

I can confirm that by doing the above it took me the click of the mouse to get straight into the page you want and put up in the favourites Bar.
Also on another FORUM I posted this someone came back you need IE11 to make things works well I have not had IE11 for nearly a week now and I can honestly say to me IE11 is dead, and Edge does not need it to work, it is nice to go to a page and not have the popup sorry but Internet Explorer needs to close then wait for it to reload the page and get back onto it again.

Update after doing the above here is an update.
After shutting down which is quick because with no 1E11 does not hangs.
Now onto start up time this is the time from pushing the on button to GETTING onto any site I want.
The time taken is 1min to load TOSHIBA OS and including signing in with password to FULLY up and running is 1 min 30 seconds I have timed it with a stop watch and phone clock =2 mins 30 second
With IE11 used to be 5-6 mins.
So no hang ups and no waiting for IE11 to kick in and say sorry Internet Explorer closing.
So for me windows 10x64 home and Edge Browser a lot quicker.
Well done to all those that tested it.
Will keep members up to date if I run into any trouble and how I fixed it.

Solve : Is there a full version of IE8 for download?

Answer»

My question is;
Can I get a full version of IE8 download anywhere?
I have some old desktop COMPUTERS with XP. I would like to sell them to local experimenters.
Of course, XP is not supported. Nor is IE8. I know, I know. Without a working OS the old PCs are near worthless. I would like to sell them with the XP that is already on them. But they OUGHT to have IE8 rather than IE6. If possible.
So, is there some way to get a full version of IE8 without breaking the law?

https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/download/internet-explorer-8-details.aspxThank you BC. Nice find.
Problem. When I try to execute it on XP, I get an error message and there is no way to get around it. It says something to the effect that it can not install on this OS.
Funny. I have another PC with XP SP3 and it has IE8. Strange.
Thanks anyway.

Do you have all the service packs installed?

ALSO I seem to remember you might have done that POSReady hack? If so, it might not allow itself to be installed on there.POSReady hack?
Goo memory! I forgot about that. I am going to find one of my other machines abd see. I only did the POS hack on this machine. That might be the problem.
Be back later.

That was it.
I got an older XP machine I did a clean install about two weeks ago. That clean machine already had IE8. I THINK that during the install and updates it automatically got IE8. So then, of clean install of XP bring IE8.

Also, the clean machine l let me do Adobe flash 19.

Solved two problems at once. Best guess is the POS hack messed me up.

Solve : Adware remover used and now I can access the internet.?

Answer»

I used an ADWARE remover program on my lap top and after I was done I can no longer ACCESS the internet on that computer. The internet is FINE and working correctly on all other devices. It says there is a problem with the DNS server. It's windows 7 and chrome and IE both don't work. Please help, I've been trying to figure this out for ages. You could try by setting the DNS to a static config, leaving your IP to dynamic and gateway to dynamic:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

More info at this link for your OS:

https://use.opendns.com/

*I use OpenDNS for my DNS bouncing off of MIT DNS Servers 250 miles away from me.

Also go into command shell and run the FOLLOWING:

IPCONFIG/ALL

and verify that you have an IP, Gateway, and DNS info that looks correct. If you see

0.0.0.0
or
169.x.x.x with x being any value

Then your not going to be connected to internet and there is a greater problem. Usually IP's are 192.168.1.x if using the default router config DHCP etc. And if 192.168.1.x then the gateway IP is usually 192.168.1.1

I have a slow dial-up connection and it would take a long time to download Firefox again. Another option would be to restore again with an older restore point if that would help but I would really like to learn how to fix this. thanksTry following the path you posted in search...then rite clik that .exe and create a shortcut to it...name it different so you know which is which...Quick response! Tried that path - first it said no results found and then it said Mozilla Firefox is not a valid folder. If I've lost the Firefox.exe folder can I replace it somehow?Best bet is to re-install it...regards to your connection ask a friend to grab it and put it on a USB stik or CD...Will do. Sure wish I knew what the *censored* HAPPENED though. I've heard Firefox is going to be more like Chrome. If so I may just drop it. thanks again

Solve : Abondoned website?

Answer»

I have WINDOWS10. I have received a phone number which belonged to a now defunct business. I receive NUMEROUS calls for this old business. It's website is still up. My number is listed on the site. Cannot contact anyone at this defunct business. How can this website be taken downIt is easier to get a new phone number.
Much easier. Believe me.
I had an 800 numbers once used by a company in FLORIDA. I called them up and tried to explain it, but it did not make any difference.

EVEN after the web site goes dark, you would continue to get calls.

Get a new number.

Other people are doing just that. And it means more and more numbers are becoming orphans. So soon north America will have a phone number shortage.
How long will it be until we run out of phone numbers in the United States?
And even the UK.
The UK is running out of phone numbers
Hurry! Do it NOW!

Solve : IE11 closing-down when attempting to log-in to my yahoo....?

Answer»

Hi. Internet explorer 11 stops working and has to close every time I bring-up my Log-in PAGE for Yahoo. It's fine with everything else. I can EVEN surf round the yahoo site itself, but as SOON as I click the log-in button, a message says a problem has caused IE11 to stop working. It trys one more time to open the page, but then a message shows, saying that it can't display this page in a Frame...or something very similar. Everything else on the computer appears to be just fine. Can ANYONE help please? This site might help

Solve : Nice of Firefox to throw the new features at you with update to 38.0.1?

Answer»

So Firefox popped up showing that an update was available. I decided "sure" let it update. Upon browser launching after update now its FULL SCREEN BROWSER with no controls and no directions on how to get back to the way the browser was before. So I had to mess around and figure it out.

I took screenshots showing what they dump you off at after the update to 38.0.1

And you need to move your pointer to the very top of the screen to then have the hidden toolbar to show, and then right-click in this area to get the menu with 2 options to appear in which they have HIDE TOOLBARS checked. You need to uncheck that, and then your not done there. Now you get your URL bar, but the taskbar is still missing as well as the menu controls of Firefox are still missing. You need to go back to the menu by right clicking to top toolbar again and selecting to "Exit Full Screen Mode". This then brings back the interface menu selections from the prior version of firefox that you had configured prior.

Nothing like an update saying "HERE !!!!!!!!!!!!... You WILL be forced checkout our latest features and oh by the way you need to figure out how to get out of this on your own!"

Pic 1 is what they dump you off at.
Pic 2 is a useless menu drop down that doesnt help anyone wanting to get back to prior browser setting.
Pic 3 is finding the hidden at top toolbar and unchecking the "hidden" to no longer be hidden.
Pic 4 ( Shown in 2nd post since the sum of the images exceed 700KB per post ) is going back to this toolbar and deselecting the "Exit Full Screen Mode" which shows no check box to even show that its enabled as seen in Pic 3 but it is enabled by default once 38.0.1 is installed.

Then everything goes back to the way it was as far as layout to 37.x.x that you ran prior to the update.

hmm strange. I wonder if any of my addons caused the update to trip up and go to default mode.

Addons enabled:

Adblock Plus 2.6.9
QuickJava 2.0.6

Addons disabled: ( Only enabled when interested in what tracking etc a website is up to etc )
Ghostery 5.4.5I have a WHOLE bunch of add-ons and plug ins (including adblock plus), but I don't use quickjava. I doubt that had anything to do with it though.Quote from: Allan on May 20, 2015, 08:20:54 AM

Same here. I even have an addon called classic theme restorer which hasn't caused any issues and is still doing what it says on the TIN Good to hear you guys didnt have the same issue. Maybe you pressed F11 by accident?

Just tried this out on computer I am at now, and F11 brought up full screen and acted just as the issue I had. It also was able to be UNDONE from full screen through the same methods that I went through the other day with the drop down and uncheck hide toolbars and then exit full screen mode.

Thinking now that when i walked away and came back its quite possible that our cat might have stepped on the keyboard as for I found her coiled up in my office chair.

So the cat pulled a trick on me during the update to 38.0.1.

Thanks BC for pointing out the cause. And my apology to the Firefox team if anyone comes across this for assuming they were throwing features at me with this full screen after update. The cat loves my soft office chair and so it didnt stand out to check to see if she bumped my F11 key. Sure...blame the Cat... Quote from: patio on May 21, 2015, 12:49:25 PM
Sure...blame the Cat...

The dog is always blameless!

We own a dog too, but he is a Dachshund. If he finds a way to get up onto my desk which is almost 4 ft off the floor I will have worse problems than just an F11 key bumped.

As it is now he struggles to climb up steps that are maybe 1 ft in height each and he has this hopping method that reminds me of Qbert when he goes down the stairs. My wife doesnt like me calling him Qbert. I also use Classic Theme Restorer with Firefox 38.0.5. Everything updated intact. The only thing I noticed was the new "Pocket" option in the Favorites menu. Checked around and looked for a way to remove it. Minimalist here(LOL). Nothing worked. I'll just ignore it. Other than that, no real complaints. Yet. LOL again. Solve : Path URL hidden - Firefox 42.0 browser used?

Answer»

Trying to figure out how a website is masking the URL path to a hyperlink. I'm use to mouse over on Firefox showing the URL path in the lower left when you place pointer over the active hyperlink area but nothing is shown.

I thought maybe they are using flash and so I disabled flash and went back to this site and it doesnt use flash I guess but the link is still functional to navigate but hidden URL path.

I started digging deeper thinking i could see the hyperlink path info in the source for the website for the webpage but its a returned dynamic output and somehow the FIELD in the webpage has an active link on selecting but I am unable to locate it.

So I went deeper using https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools/Page_Inspector which is built into Firefox and its great that it will show targeting cross hairs for the hyperlink element of the page but still no hyperlink info that could be copy pasted into the browser window to get you direct to that page.

I was hoping to make a bookmark, but the bookmark only brings you to the initial page, it doesnt bring you an additional level into the page which is what I wanted to have a direct bookmark to.

I have since just printed out as a PDF the 2nd page or overlay within the website to have as REFERENCE, but just really curious how they are able to do this and if there is a way to see the path that is hidden.

Here is the website.... the hidden link is this site and its a NPC ( Non Playing Character ) reference. The NPC=3 is just a quick reference to a NPC not the exact one that I wanted to quick bookmark to without having to select to get deeper.

http://www.wowhead.com/npc=3/flesh-eater

Down towards the middle of the page there is a Noteworthy(118) table and another value within (56) which contains additional information. However both of the paths to these are hidden from view. If you CLICK on Noteworthy (118) your url path changes to http://www.wowhead.com/npc=3/flesh-eater#drops:mode=noteworthy and if you click on the (56) your path changes to http://www.wowhead.com/npc=3/flesh-eater#drops:mode= .... and if you go direct to http://www.wowhead.com/npc=3/flesh-eater#drops:mode= the first item you see on the list is Wool Cloth, so this is not a direct link to that part of this page or this page if different from the initial home page for this NPC. If you select the (56) to go to the other page you will notice that the items change and at the top if the list is Linen Cloth followed by Silk Cloth. This transition is how you know your at the main initial page or the 2nd page or overlay in. The Wool Cloth at the top first item for loot is the initial page and the one I am trying to direct link is deeper when selecting the (56) navigation in which you see Linen Cloth and Silk.

This isnt that critical since it just requires me to click on the other field to see information or print it as a PDF, but it seems like there should be a way to bookmark this other page that the URL path info is hidden from.

Below is a pic showing the URL path that a link I would expect to show when mouse over.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Found This...Browsers only show the target URL for links, in the case of that "link", It's a standard span. The Click event is being intercepted by Javascript. I don't think the URL actually changes anything, and it is all handled client side- it looks like the server builds javascript data that GETS used by a client-side menuing/table system, but the initial state of that menu system is pre-defined.Thanks Patio for that link...I know that crooks have been bending URLs for a while now with making URLs look to be like the ACTUAL sites, however I didnt know that some of them are very hard to detect such as with the Google lower case g reference, I am looking at both of them and dont see the difference, yet the other examples are easy to spot but i can see how someone could miss the accented i vs the normal i in Mozilla.

Thanks BC for explaining how they are doing this. I guess I will just have to navigate down and click to get to the other info since there is no way to target it directly, or continue creating PDF copies of the info I want to reference.

Solve : Why can I have two downloads at 32kb's but not single download at 60kb's?

Answer»

Hey,

One thing that's seriously starting to bother me is that I can have two downloads running at the same time at 32kb's each but I can never get a download to run at 60kb's. It's most notable if doing torrent downloads or software like GetRight where the software overcome this limitation by having multiple socket connections to the same FILE getting a COMBINED speed of 60kb's. Is this a protocol limitation, server restriction, ISP throttling?

Kinda embarresed that I don't know the answer to it to be honest but then again, never delved that deep into the internals of sockets.

I would appreciate any insights or information you COULD give.

P.S. Not a question on how to improve my overall speed as it's ISP throttled, nothing that can be done about that, just confused as to why I can't use my full Available bandwidth on one download instead of only SPREAD over multiple.Quote

Is this a protocol limitation?
Yes, that is why they do two or more threads.
Do you need a detailed answer?
Great, thanks for the quick response, much appreciated

Solve : email link in website won't go to my email?

Answer»

Quote from: jacobixxx8 on November 28, 2015, 02:04:10 PM

yes this is a webpage I'm trying to make on my computer. I haven't used ftp or a host yet. I'm just learning.
That does matter. Not all HTML commands can e used on the local computer. Still, if you have a local e-milt client that can do SMTP then you should be able to get the mailto thing to work.

Mailto Syntax Tutorial

Ignore the ADS, just READ the tutorial.

Suitable local e-mail clients are:
Mozilla Thunderbird
Opera Mail
Pegasus
SEAMONKEY
Windows Live Mail

These are not web mail. They do not use your browser. They compose and send out e-m,ail using SMTP protocol.
If one of the above has been set as your e-mail client, then the mail to code should work.

I hope this is of some help.

Soybean,
I click on the address and windows live COMES up the same as it does
when I click on my email in my starting a website .But when I click on my email it don't go to my email.
I didn't send to that address you gave me.By "windows live", I presume you mean Windows Live Mail (WLM). Right?

And, since you do not normally use WLM for email, I presume you have not set up an email account in it. So, when you click on the email link in the web page you have created on your computer, WLM opens because it is an email program. Do you understand?

In order for WLM to know how to send or receive email, you have to set up the email account in it. It knows nothing about your email accounts until you create, i.e. set up, an account in it. Do you understand? Here's some info on setting up an exede.net or wildblue.net email account: http://help.exede.net/articles/General/POP-IMAP-settings-for-Exede-and-WildBlue-email The setup will be very similar to this: http://help.exede.net/articles/General/3945Thanks a lot. I'm quite sure all I need to do is download WLM and it'll all work.
I haven't had time to do it just yet. Then all will be connected.Well, you seem to have stated that you have WLM. You said "windows live" opens .... And, I asked for confirmation that you mean WLM. If you don't have WLM already, then what is the "windows live" that opens when you click on an email link.

Also, even if you do not have WLM now and you download and install it, you still have to create/setup your email account(s) in it, as I previously posted.

Solve : Latency?

Answer»

I am going to a website that tells me your network latency is high 150ms I use firefox 30 Have INTERNET connect speed of 18.2 meg what does this mean and where or how would you change or fix this?Latency is affected by many things. Best method for testing latency is to ping while no downloading or streaming etc is happening to a destination of choice. Not all sites or servers will return a ping request as part of an anti DDos attack configuration.

I TEST my latency online by simply pinging www.google.com such as

Ping www.google.com

in which i get

Getting latency off of a website out there that tests latency I dont feel is the best method. There may be many hops between you and that website. If you run a trace route you can see all the hops in between and where the most latency is occurring.

Your local latency should be very very little just like I have. If you have wifi with weak signal or neighbors on the same channel of wifi you can end up with radio competition and router and computer work to pick what packets are your traffic from the noise and will add latency. If this is the problem reconfigure the radio of the router or access point to a channel not used by neighbors or other wireless devices and try that. If you have a weak wifi signal you ALSO will get high latency as for packets have to be retransmitted that failed to transmit etc and this adds delays in communication.

Hope this helps
