Solve : Firefox download dialog?

Answer»

Hi

I am having problem with FIREFOX. When I try to download something, a download dialog box SHOWS up but when I click to save file, the dialog box become disabled. If I press Ctrl+Esc it can be ENABLED again.

Also, when my windows 7 starts up, the start menu button will not be clickable, after I press Ctrl+Esc then it will work.

All of these problems still HAPPEN even after fresh installation of windows 7.

What can be the problem ?

thanksDid you install any other programs after Windows 7 clean build before installing Firefox? Where is this Win 7 from ? ?To: DaveLembke

I installed Realtek Ethernet CONTROLLER Driver before installing Firefox.

------------------------

To: Patio

I bought a recovery disk from online and use my product key that came with PC on it.Does it say Microsoft on the disk ? ?...if not return it.To: Patio

It does not say "Microsoft" on the disk but the web says the disk has Microsoft Windows 7 backup system image which fully complies with Microsoft's policy.
Suit yourself...

It may be an image for a different PC which would likely explain your issues...To: Patio

But before I bought the windows 7 recovery, I also downloaded another iso image of windows 7 (I do not think this iso is modified) from a web site and problem still the same.

Does my problems sound like a corrupted windows 7 or is there anything that I can do to fix it ?

thanksDownloaded ISO of Windows 7 was likely an illegal download. You really need to buy an original Microsoft Created and Issued Windows 7 Disc with License or contact your computer manufacturer for their specific system recovery media set which is cheaper and both are legal vs illegal. To: DaveLembke

The web I downloaded windows 7 said it is a legal copy because they do not provide product key. I use the product key that came with my PC. I went to Microsoft website to look for windows 7 iso and they have it but it gives me error when download it.

Where do you think I can get a genuine windows 7 from Microsoft ?

thanks
What error from the MS site ? ?If you still have the copy of windows DVD disk then you can find it on card inside or if you purchase your window on Microsoft website. You can find it on the email that you use when you buy windows online. To: bailey

My PC came with already installed Windows 7. I do not have any physical copy of Windows 7 DVD disk.

Solve : Slow Audio on Netflix?

Answer»

It has never been this bad before.
Weeks ago the audio delay on streaming videos was barely noticeable. Now on Netfix is comes to almost 2 seconds from lips to ear. Very annoying. Sometimes you can not tell who is talking.
I get this both on Firefox and Chrome. Bother are very recent versions.
Ant ideas?
I am using XP on my old machine. Worked fine a few weeks ago. no BIG changes to speak about. (Will try Windows 7 to see if it matters.)
Any ideas?
So I booted up Windows 7 and went to Netflix and started off whee I was watching the third episode of Jersey Girl. And it works just fine.
So Why? What is it about XP? Why does XP mess up the audio?

Wait..... Just now I tried and now it works!

I give up.
I can not understand the Internet.

I have doubts that its internet related. Depending on the hardware specs it might be just the Windows XP systems hardware is an old dog running a marathon to try to keep up with new tricks. Was your system doing anything in the background that might have made the system busy other than streaming?

I had a HTPC that was a Pentium 4 2.8Ghz with 1GB RAM running Windows XP and it had a EVGA Geforce 6200 256MB video card 8x AGP in it with S-Video a few years ago and I had similar problems to what you have with offsets between audio and video when the daily antivirus would kick in for a quick 10+/- minute scan.

It seems that the GPU not hindered by a virus scan was able to process the video with no problems, but the conversion process for the audio from packets to an audio output required a good DEAL of CPU time and when antivirus was running the audio would lag.

Its nice that a small power efficient Roku replaced a Pentium 4 system saving about 120 watts of power and my HTPC I had a wireless keyboard and mouse with my own custom HTML with hyperlinks to navigate to online streaming networks etc, and the roku I have no menu to have to manage. Additionally the video quality of the RCA connection to TV vs S-Video is far better. The S-video had blur when there was any text on the screen and picture was not the sharpest, but the roku with RCA audio video is pretty sharp when a stream has a good connection and it can sync at the better quality stream. How much free HDD space is there on the XP rig ? ?The XP is on C: with 50 GB free nd bout 45 GB used.
I have yet to find a pattern, Sometimes doing a reset and starting over solves the problem. I think maybe a virus scan in the background might be the thing.
It also could point to a connection issue on the XP rig...
Just sayin...Well... maybe I will only watch using windows 7.
Hard to understand, working good a few weeks ago. whats hardware specs of the xp system?
My desktop is:
Dell Optiplex 530 with Windows XP, 7 + 10
(triple boot)
RAM is 2 GB
All OS are 32 bit and legal.
Video is the built-in Dell video.
Network is normally running at or over 5 Mbps.
Firefox has Silver light.
AV is Avast free version.

As mentioned, works good on Windows 7.
The behavior on XP started recently. I can only assume there is some kind of background. After a reboot and fresh start, the problem goes away.
I have not seen this on Amazon. Only Netflix.
Right now I am watching it in a new wined while I type this . But it does not affect the sound or video In fact, the video and audio is very smooth. Can't be the full moon, that was two days ago.

Quote

Dell Optiplex 530 with Windows XP, 7 + 10

AH OK.... same box 3 different OS choices and 7 and 10 behave, so its not a hardware issue, its something going on in the background of that XP build most likely.

I thought you had a different box for XP and a different one for 7. Thanks for sharing that info.

Do you have all 3 OS's on the same hard drive or 7 + 10 on one drive and XP an another or 3 hard drives in this system and each their own OS install in which at boot your using hot key to select which drive to boot from? Here is the method.
Install XP first and then partition the drive with a suitable tool.
Then install Widows 7 and validate it. Install from MS DVD.
Next install Windows 10 from ISO and select custom install. PU om last available partition.
The has been for sever month now and has undergone various virus scans.

I do suspect there is some kind of background spyware, but have not caudal it with the usual tools. I think it is a commercial product tart claims I installed it. But when I go to remove it, nothing happens.

Right now Netflix is running fine. Hard to find a pattern. From what I see. Netflix does a whole lot of buffering and the through put is set to be less than my top ISP speed. So it is hard to catch it doing the audio delay thing.

The crapware is called 'ByteFence Anti-Malware' and can not be removed by the normal way.

See Here...Thank you Patio.

Solve : How to remove the small picture?

Answer»

Hi,

From Firefox, when I open some web pages, I found a small picture is ADDED at the top-left corner of pictures. If I right click the small picture and select "Copy Link Location", I can GET "javascript:void(0);".

My question is how to REMOVE that small picture?

Thanks a lot for your help!

[attachment DELETED by admin to conserve space]I believe that icon shows on images that are not SHOWN full size, when you click on that icon (or perhaps the picture itself) is the image shown enlarged? If I'm right, the icon won't be displayed on the enlarged image.

Thank you.
That icon (the small picture) shows on image is on it's full size. When I click on that icon, the whole image haven't enlarged. And you can see the options for me to select.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Hello,

I realised that icon can not be removed! That is inserted onto pictures by the sebsite!

Solve : Laptop Crashes only when there is no power cord connected and watching videos?

Answer»

I have a LENOVO Laptop Win 8.

My laptop crashes or froze everytime I am watching a video online and only when I don't have my power cord connected. Could this just be some kind of plug-in issue or windows issue, or browser issue? How old is the battery ? ?...any ERROR messages ? ?I don't know how old is the battery. But the battery is fine I think. It only happens when I don't have my power cord connected and only when I am watching videos, like it happens when I'm on Facebook too, and site that has videos. There are no error message. It just froze. I can't do ctl+atl+delete. All I can do is SHUT down manually. If the battery was fine it would stand to reason that the crashes wouldn't only happen on battery power...just sayin.Quote from: PATIO on January 30, 2016, 02:57:39 PM

Solve : Registry Settings for PDF Default Program for IE?

Answer»

Hello,

I have a problem setting the default program for PDFs via REGISTRY for IE11.

With the key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.pdf\UserChoice

I am ABLE to set the default program for PDFs on the Desktop / Windows Explorer - unfortunatly this doesnt effect the IE Settings.
In IE11 always the latest installed / updated PDF program is set as default program to display PDFs.

I would like to be able to set / switch between Adobe Acrobat Reader DC und dem PDFXChange Editor as default program for IE11 via registry settings for all of the computers in our domain.

OS is Windows 7 Pro 64bit and the latest version of IE as well as both PDF programs.

Does anyone have an idea?

ADDITIONAL information:
Wenn I use the option "Open with..." to set the PDF default program, this doesnt effect the IE setting - but when using the builtin function in both PDF programs to set as default, then it does work for the IE as well.

Thanks for any help in advance!

Best,

Solve : Google chrome thinks i'm in Montreal while i am not, can't find a way fix this?

Answer»

Hi
I have been trying to change my browser LOCATION on my WIN7 pc, i live in Québec City, but it thinks im in Montreal, so i i want to use services that detect my location, it always wrong, any help?Doesn't matter where you live...it's picking up your ISP's location...not yours.ok and do you know a chrome plugin tha makes the browser think im in québec city from an actual postal address or something?
I know you can fake other countries but what i am trying to achieve is more specificThe browser gets location information via your IP Address. Oftentimes it doesn't work.

I'm on the West Coast on Vancouver Island and oftentimes sites appear to think I'm in Toronto, for example.yes for me it picks up I'm about 8-12 hour drive away from where I am... I am near Seattle Washington and when I need a phone number or store hours from a local store it always tells me the closest store is in Idaho.... I know there are stores closer to me! so it's where your isp is located.... Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 15, 2016, 10:57:54 PM

The browser gets location information via your IP Address. Oftentimes it doesn't work.

I'm on the West Coast on Vancouver Island and oftentimes sites appear to think I'm in Toronto, for example.
According to companies that report on these things:

Accuracy rates on NAMING the city from an IP address vary between 50%-80%.
Determining the nation of an Internet user is 95%-99% percent accurate, for reasons that have to do with how IP addresses are allocated and registered.
Determining the physical location of the user, down to a city or ZIP code, is trickier and less accurate.

It depends on what the ISP discloses. For example, the island of Ireland is divided between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland which is a province of the United KINGDOM. The Republic's TV provider, RTÉ, provides a web TV service, RTÉ Player, which is available in 2 versions, domestic and international. The international service lacks some programming due to licensing issues. In theory RTÉ makes the domestic service available to all the island of Ireland but some Northern Ireland inhabitants UK-based ISPs issue IP addresses from blocks listed as allocated to Scotland over the sea (where the undersea cable comes from), so they are stuck with the international version.

Solve : What is Firefox Pocket.?

While reading, I saw thus LITTLE thing pop up and block part of my view. It said I COULD send this page to a mobile device. I did not try it.
My question is: Does this work good? Is it worth the effort of signing in for yet another service? Maybe I ALREADY have something like this. Google? Yahoo? Outlook?

Please let me know if it works for you. I've also wondered about the Pocket but have not USED it yet. When I read your post, I searched and found https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/save-web-pages-later-pocket-firefox. Looks like a cool feature. I think I want to try it.

Solve : Impression of Microsoft Edge, the new Windows 10 browser?

Answer»

I have noticed Edge being sluggish and more demanding of CPU resources than Firefox. Today, for example, I had 5 or 6 tabs open in Edge, with it being the only browser I had open, and the computer I'm using had some noticeable sluggishness in browsing and when opening other apps such as WPS Writer and WPS Spreadsheets. Granted, I had 2 tabs open for Kelley Blue Book (kbb.com) and it is a heavily tasking website. But, with Edge closed and Firefox open with 25 tabs and then opening kbb.com and obtaining a price quote on a CAR, I did not experience the negative impact I noticed with Edge.

I have drifted away from Firefox for periods of time but I have enjoyed using it with Windows 10. I have the latest version of Firefox, which is 42.0 at this time. During the months I've used it with Windows 10, it has consistently performed well with many tabs open and/or viewing complex web pages. One feature I like very much is being able to right click and get a popup panel with Forward and Back buttons for NAVIGATING pages. With Edge, moving the mouse pointer up to the upper left corner of the window to click the Back or Forward button is REQUIRED. soybean

Just came across your post so I thought I'd put Edge through its paces a bit. As I post this I've got Netflix streaming on it and have had no problems in the past. This may be a dumb question and forgive me for asking, have you rebooted your pc lately?Yep, I always shutdown at night and start it the next day. I don't use Netflix but I THINK you need to have multiple tabs open and displaying numerous websites to encounter the sluggishness I mentioned. If I only have one website open in Edge, I think I might not notice it being any slower than other browsers. I am not a big fan of edge, on my basic work laptop (Asus 4gb ram, 1.9ghz) edge is noticeably slower with only one window compared to CHROME. I am not a fan of Edge. Microsoft has to know that it just isn't reliable and they don't seem to be fixing it. Edge opens for a brief amount of time and closes on its own. In Windows 10 some apps won't open at all and others do the same as Edge. They open briefly and then close on their own. Hello Microsft, have you created another browser that js going to end up being just as disliked as Windows 8/8.1??

Solve : Help With Signing Into Chrome on Win10?

Answer»

I have Win10 on this laptop only, and I have Win7 on everything else I have. They are both 64 bit. I am able to sign into Chrome on all of my Win7 machines, but I have tried every trick I know, incl. the exact instructions that Google offered. Let me say here the Google CEO should be shot for the ultra crappy support they offer, and for making FREE volunteers to do all of their dirty Cust. Svc. There, it's out of my system.

The way I fixed the PROBLEM in Win7 was adding another Chrome user. I signed OUT of Chrome on Win7, then created a 2nd user, using the same email, and it worked. However, the same approach just won't WORK with Win10. I've tried creating a local Admin account in Win10, and signing in with that, but still no success. I've tried using the 32Bit, and 64Bit Chrome versions. I've posted on Win10 Forum, as well as the Chrome Product forum. Again, those guys are pathetic, I've been better at finding solutions than they have. The guys at Win10 Forum were great at least at offering VIABLE solutions, but they can't figure it out either, and they ARE NOT having issues. BTW, before you ask I just had to buy an entirely new HDD on this laptop, and install Windows all over again, and it STILL doesn't work.

Any suggestions? I'd suggest doing away with Chrome and using Firefox or another unless you need chrome for chromecast etc. Im not impressed with chrome myself. Some people like it but I avoid it.

from the windows 10 system can you log onto your gmail account WITHOUT use of chrome, which I am guessing your loging in as for chrome with edge or another browser to know that the problem with that computer is specifically chrome and not an issue with authentication as a whole with googles servers to gmail etc?Logging into google...and/or Gmail is not browser specific...You've said that signing into Chrome on Win10 doesn't work.

Do you receive any error messages? What happens when you try to sign into Chrome on Win10?

Quote from: patio on April 01, 2016, 05:03:29 PM

Logging into google...and/or Gmail is not browser specific...

But signing into Chrome is, being that it is a browser. What is the purpose of "signing into Chrome"? If you just want to access your gmail, just go to google.com, with any browser, and sign into your email account.

Edit: I'm not a heavy user of Chrome, so I guess you might want to sign in to it to sync bookmarks across devices or some other synchronization. Is that it?Quote
What is the purpose of "signing into Chrome"?
EFFECTIVELY the same as signing in to Firefox sync, except, I believe, that the settings are stored as part of one's Google account, rather then synchronized between devices. Quite useful in both programs for people with multiple computers.

Solve : Browers or A Website Problem??

Answer»

I hope I'm posting this in the right area of the forum - I apologize in advance if I have.

This website was perfect and then a couple of HOURS later it looked like this photo attached -- no matter what browser I use it looks like this. Is there something at my end of that caused this or is it just the website? If my end, how can I correct it?

Thanks in advance!

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Probably the website. You are just getting the plain text. I have seen this quite often. Sometimes the full version comes up after a delay, or it's OK after a while if you go back. It looks like this to me now:

Probably their site, but I have also gotten partial page loads like this before when on wireless with sketchy signal. Part of page loads and browser thinks its fully loaded and you end up with a very lacking version of the website displayed. If its wireless caused it should be corrected by moving to an area where wifi strength is stronger.

For the fact that its just this one site and not others... Its more than likely the site. But just throwing out there the other causes of this sort of problem, and wireless NETWORK weakness caused. Thanks for the help. I wasn't sure if there was something on my end I could do to fix this or if not. I've cleared cookies, CACHE, etc...
I just did a system recovery thinking this would resolve the issue (and fix another unrelated issue). Website still looks like text to me after the system recovery. lol.

I am hooked up via Ethernet instead of wireless to a HP ENVY DESKTOP (Windows 10).

Solve : Bold fonts listed for unread post to threads??

Answer»

Is there a cookie setting or something else I can change on my computer that will keep the bold font listing of a thread title bold after I have viewed that thread. ALTERNATIVELY, an my real question is 'on my other computer, why would thread titles not change to non-bold after I have viewed that thread'?
I know I'm not explaining myself very good so attached is an example of a message board on which I have VISITED the thread titled "402 Stroker" (circled in red). The thread title is no longer bold because there have been no new post to that thread SINCE my LAST visit to it.
Is there a setting that would cause this to not happen, where the thread title stays bold whether I have visited it or not.
If so what setting would this be?

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]On all Forums if that option is available to change it'll be listed in your profile under appearance and settings...

Solve : How to get Cgrome back on my Android??

Answer»

Recently I go a Neutab G7 Android 5.1 tablet. In my frustration, I removed the CHROME bower. Now I want it back. But the Google Play Store says I already have it. So what do I do now? How do you install a program you removed?
Please? I'll assume it works the same as an android phone. Go to the play store and tap on the three horizontal bars in the upper left. Select "my apps", SCROLL down to Chrome and tap on INSTALLThanks Allen, Got it!
Yes, it is just like the phone. My Google account shows I have several installs. I had to select the one for my Neutab and tab on it and found a new windows with the install option.

What was CONFUSING is that the Play Store said it was already installed. Which it was, for other devices. So there is a drop down menu. After doing a DOUBLE tap on Neutab G7, it showed another install window.

Your suggestion made me look again in the play store.

Glad you got it sorted out.I still think CH needs a action on Mobile devices.

Solve : Can not adjust Gmail visual aspect in Firefox.?

Answer»

I do not think this is a OS issue. Maybe not even a browser issue.

Whenever I go to gmail to check my mail, I have to adjust the font size by using the ctl+ combination to zoom in. (Like other seniors, I have the low vision problem.) Yes, I l could use the magnifier, and sometimes I do. Brut it is more convenient to just user the zoom feature fouled in modern browsers.

Look at this:

(To conserve bandwidth I reduced the size of the image.)

Thee is no horizontal scroll bar, so I can not slide over to see the right side of the screen. But if I zoom out, the font is much too small for me to read. For some reason gmail thinks I would rather see the left sidebar instead of the text of the messages. Is this not a flaw in gmail? What can I do to make reading gmail easier.

Am I the only PERSON that has this problem with gmail?
Any help welcome.
This is an issue with G-mail that has been reported QUITE frequently on their issues pages. Often in different contexts. The usual reply is to blame the user for having the audacity to want to use their software in a particular way. "Reduce the size of your fonts" is not a solution, despite their repeated claims that it is. They should be fixing their software, not working up new ways to blame the user.

you might try the "basic" mode. It doesn't use any AJAX or javascript so it shouldn't be disabling the scrollbar. Browsers display the scrollbar when content is beyond the viewable area:

EDIT: Basic mode link:
http://mail.google.com/mail?ui=html

That said, the page might be explicitly disabling scrollbars. You would think browsers would have options to prevent this to workaround web designs created by egocentric companies who can't accept that their software might have issues, but I can't seem to find any.

In Chrome there is an extension to make the Gmail left sidebar resizeable, but you still won't get a horizontal scroll bar when zoomed so far that message text flows off the right side. Still you will see a bit more before that happens. see here:

In Firefox, this can be done using about:config. There's a bevy of options beginning with dom.disable which stops websites from disabling certain features. I used to set most of these to true (which disables this feature being disabled...) to eliminate popups with no close button, no title bar, and so forth. This was before I started using Adblock Plus and now uBlock Origin, so I haven't ACTUALLY set these options for years but I'm fairly sure they still work
dom.disable_window_open_feature.scrollb ars is the one in question here but some of the others may come in handy, they're fairly obviously named but a quick Google search will reveal more info if needed.

After I did this in Firefox I could zoom a message in Gmail and see a horizontal scroll bar up to 200% zoom, but it vanishes at the next zoom level (240%).

Ahh, Gmail is blocked here at work, so thanks for testing.I always zoom using the CTRL key and the keypad plus and minus keys, and I have a Firefox add-on called DEFAULT Zoom Level, which shows the current zoom level in the top toolbar. The zoom level steps in Firefox are a comma-separated list of decimal values held in about.config (toolkit.zoomManager.zoomValues). The default on mine seemed to be

0.3,0.5,0.67,0.8,0.9,1,1.1,1.2,1.33,1.5,1.7,2,2.4,3

so to get a more fine grained series I changed this to 0.1 steps:

0.3,0.4,0.5,0.6,0.7,0.8,0.9,1,1.1,1.2,1.3,1.4,1.5,1.6,1.7,1.8,1.9,2,2.1,2.2,2.3,2.4,2.5,2.6,2.7,2.8,2.9,3.0

I had to restart Firefox for this to take effect. Following this I was able to see that when zooming a message in Gmail the horizontal scroll bar previously enabled vanished out of the bottom of the Firefox window at 220% zoom level. If I then hit F11 for full screen Firefox I was able to get up to 240% still with a horizontal scroll bar. At 250% it vanished.

Because of your help, now I have tools to improve the visual layout of G mail.
Firefox gives you three in-built options—Enhanced, Classic, Blank—for the new tab. I have never been able to tell the difference between Enhanced and Classic, both of which appear in the speed-dial format. Anyway, you can do away with these default options as described below.
Get a Dedicated Add-on
There are several add-ons designed to put the New Tab page on steroids. Super Start is one of them and is quite popular. It gives you a visual way to maintain your bookmarks and also allows you to organize them into groups.
Super Start comes with a handful of muted themes. A tiny notepad and a list of recently closed tabs are tucked away in the corner. The add-on preferences allow you to set Super Start as your home page, view the speed dial in text-only mode, add a search box, etc.

New Tab Tools is also worth trying. It combines a speed dial with the launcher from the default home page. You can choose from a light and a dark theme, tweak the number and arrangement of tiles, and even add custom thumbnail images for the tiles.
If visual appeal is all you want to add to new tabs, you’ll love Browser Backgrounds. Every time you open a new tab, it randomly displays an interesting background from a predefined set. Add your favorite photos and wallpapers to the mix.

Personas Plus is another useful add-on to change Firefox skins quickly.
Add a New Theme
Firefox themes help you make Firefox feel like home. Install one that adds a nice background in new tabs or even allows you to add a custom wallpaper to them. Certain add-ons like Super Start and New Tab Tools (listed above) have an in-built setting to upload a background image of your choice.
Want to preview a theme before installing it? Just hover on its thumbnail on the themes page. Firefox will temporarily display the selected theme instead of the existing one.

Take the MAKEOVER a step further by choosing from one of the Complete themes that transform the look of various browser elements including tabs, menus, buttons, the address bar, and even the window frame. For example, FXChrome makes Firefox look like Chrome.
Home Page Makeover
The default Firefox home page is clean and convenient, but if you want to give it a personal touch, try one of the following alternatives.

Switch to Your Favorite Website
Setting up Firefox to load one of your favorite websites on startup is easy. OpenFirefox Preferences via Edit > Preferences, and in the General tab, look for theHome Page field. Add a link to your preferred website there. You can simply type it in or select it from your bookmarks.
If the page is running in the background, you can also click on Use Current Pages. Of course, this will set up multiple urls as home pages if there are multiple tabs open. This means that clicking on the Home button will load all of the pages listed in the Home Page field.
Want the default page back? Not a problem. Restore to Default will bring it back.
Hijack the New Tab Page
By default, you won’t see the home page unless you set it to load when Firefox starts or unless you press the Home icon. How about making it appear every time you open a new tab? Use one of the following methods.
•Install a simple add-on like New Tab Homepage.
•If you already use an add-on like Tab Mix Plus to manage tabs like a pro, make the home page your New Tab page from the add-on preferences.

•Type about:config in the address bar, accept the warning that appears, search for browser.newtab.url, and change its value from about:newtab toabout:home.

Follow up this tweak by setting a super-useful star screen like Start.me as your home page.
Total Visual Control
The UserStyles.org website has a decent collection of themes for the Firefox home page as well as the New Tab page. Use it with the Stylish add-on and you can gain complete control over how Firefox looks. Here’s how you can go aboutimplementing user styles.
What Does Your Start Page Look Like?
Chrome does seem to have the upper hand when it comes to awesome start screens, but Firefox gives you more options for customization than any other browser. Take advantage of this Firefox freedom. Begin by tweaking that start page. It may or may not drastically improve your workflow, but it will brighten up your browser and give you some nice tools to work with.

Solve : How to see list of recent searches in a web form in Chrome??

Answer» USING the latest Chrome build on Windows 7 I can't seem to find what used to (I think) be a feature a while ago in most browsers. A frequently visited webpage with a search field, when clicked, would show a LIST of recent searches performed on that page in that field. I'm not talking about search engine autocomplete or suggestions. I'm not talking about form fill (i.e. personal INFORMATION). I'm not talking about omnibar search history. I'm simply talking about a SPECIFIC field on a specific page keeping a history of searches. This was in the form of caching or something similar but I cannot see an option to enable this in Chrome and cannot find any references to this on the internet. How to enable this option? We have an internal site at work which I often perform searches in and suggestions of recent searches on that page would be very convenient.the 'most visited' addon seems close to the item described. ive recently installed this in chrome. if not, the link below will show similar addons to.. most visited. see link for more info. also, for all others who might pass this way, as a search result.

Solve : Get error when extract the Win RAR archive?

Answer»

Dear Experts,

i have problem, somebody get this error when u want extracting .RAR files ?
! C:\Documents and Settings\Touraj\Desktop\clip 1.part2.rar: CRC failed in the encrypted file CD1.iso (wrong password ?)

Password is correct i get this error in 32% if somebody knows how to fix this problem, tell me

Thank you so much!
With that error CODE it's most likely the source file...The problem is that you have a bad archive. WinRAR runs from one file to another adding to the full archive. In this case something called CD1.ISO

Like patio said it looks like you have a bad source file. Do you have a bunch of files? Something like this...

file.rar
file1.001
file2.002
etc...

It seems like one of the files is corrupted. You can TRY to run the repair but I have had no luck with that. Your best bet it to download the archive again.

Follow simple steps to fix corrupted WinRAR file
Step 1: After downloading and installation of tool is finished, launch its Home Screen as SHOWN in figure a.

Figure a: Home Screen
Step 2: Using browse button select the corrupted WinRAR file as shown in figure b.

Figure b: Select Corrupted File
Step 3: Choose the desired location, where you wish to save the repaired WinRAR file and later click on "Save" option as shown in figure

Solve : Downloading Mozilla Firefox to thumb drive?

Answer»

I have a mini laptop that I am trying to set up for my Dad. It had Internet Explorer on it but somehow the program has been damaged and I cannot connect to the internet. I would like to download Mozilla FIREFOX to a usb THUMB drive from my desktop then install it on the mini laptop but when I ask it to download it installs it to the desktop and doesn't give me the option to change to the thumb drive. Can anyone advise me on how to do this? Or suggest an easier way? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank youFirst of all, IE cannot be damaged as such. If you are having problems with it, post the problems and we'll try to help.

Second, download Firefox from here: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/#en-US And if you are gonna run it from a thumb drive get it from Here...

I READ your Post too QUICKLY...before you DLoad change your browser DLoad destination to the thumb drive before DLoading in Tools/Options...Desktop is probably the default DLoad directory. And it's okay to download it to the computer and then transfer it to your usb drive. That way you'll have a copy of the file in both locations.

Solve : Cannot sign in to aol mail, yahoo mail, google.com,?

Answer»

This morning I tried to sign in on my Home Page to my AOL mail and got the message that it couldn't find the SERVER. I then put aol.com into the browser and got the AOL home page, but it refused to let me GET to my email page. Tried my yahoo email and that would work EITHER. It would let me connect to NOAA (weather), CH, a photog website, and ebay. I figured it might be a PROBLEM with my browser, Firefox, so I switched to Microsoft Edge and that did exactly the same thing. Some sites would come up and many would not. I have Kaspersky Total Security and updated Firefox LAST evening before signing off. I have no idea if it has something to do with Kaspersky or settings somewhere that I know nothing about. Has anyone else had this problem. I am running Windows 10 and my internet is through Hughesnet which I've had a problem with lately. Keep getting DNS server messages. Have no idea what that means. If anyone has had this problem and/or knows how to rectify it, please let me know. I will just have to keep checking back for answers as I can't get to my email to check for notices of answers. Thank you.

Solve : Blocked IP address?

Answer»

I get the following message when trying to post to a user group:

"Your IP 76.180.xxx.xxx has been blocked because it is blacklisted. For details PLEASE see http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?"

The IP (number scrambled) is my router. Spamhause is of no help. neither are any of the other address block removal sites. This problem only happens with one group (I can post to all others). I contacted that group and they tell me "they have no record of my the address being blocked on their site".

Does anyone have any ideas what might cause this?
Thanks. Jim B.Only thing you can do is contact the site...
Blacklisting USUALLY happens for a reason.

P.S. if they say they have no record of it they haven't looked hard enuff...I did a Google on:
who is spamhaus.org?
...and found this:
https://www.spamhaus.org/lookup/5

The site claims to be part of a project to block SPAM sites.
Quote

The Spamhaus Project is an international ORGANIZATION, based in both London and Geneva, founded in 1998 by STEVE Linford to track email spammers and spam-related activity. The name spamhaus, a pseudo-German expression, was coined by Linford to refer to an Internet service provider, or other firm, which spams or knowingly provides service to spammers.

Solve : SQL server error 40 not allowing me to use any Web browser.?

Answer»

Forgive me if this post is in the wrong place, I couldn't think of a better one. Yesterday I got on my pc and an error showed up saying "A network-related or instance specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL server" "(provider: Named Pipes Provider, error 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)." Along with other things but I think that is the most important part. I had never heard of these SQL servers but after doing some research the most common thing people would say is to make sure my SQL browser servers were running and to go through some steps to turn them one, one of which was through the command prompt which didn't work. Another was to just find it in my program files but the only things in there were 2 folders 1 TITLED "Microsoft SQL Server" and one titled "Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition" and I couldn't find anything useful in there. I'm thinking somehow something got deleted on my computer so I don't have the SQL server browser anymore but I'm not sure. If anyone knows about the SQL servers and could maybe help that would be greatly appreciated. I should also add that my computer does say I am connected to my Internet and I am even able to open Steam and chat with friends but not able to open the steam store, and also I'm on Windows 10 and have been for a while now.Have you run an extensive VIRUS scan with an up to date ANTIVIRUS and ran the free or paid for malwarebytes to ensure your system didnt get hit with anything? Are you able to use a restore POINT to go back to a time when your system didnt have this issue?

It sounds like corruption or infection in your system with the browser. Steam CLIENT works because its working through its own services that are not browser dependent.

Solve : Can't connect to the Internet on browsers?

Answer»

When I start my PC, I can sometimes use access sites on my browsers (Chrome/Mozilla/IE) for a short time, a SHORTER time, or I can't at all. In the end it seems LIKE I'm not connected to the INTERNET regardless, but this is apparently only HAPPENING with the browsers. Also, I just ran Tor, which I never use, and it updated and worked normally. And when I boot in Safe Mode I can use all of the browsers normally. I also noticed that when I boot my PC in normal mode, and for the short time that I can (sometimes) use my browsers, when I go to Google, it looks like 2007-something Google, really archaic. In Tor and in any other browser in Safe Mode it looks normal. I have no clue what's happening or what's causing it. Please HELP, and thank you.

Solve : Can't use Internet Explorer on Windows 2000?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a PC at work with Windows 2000. I cant use Internet Explorer Mozilla or Firefox. I went to Network Connections and it says connected. I RAN IPconfig/all and the IP address is 0.0.0.0. The error I get in IE is can't find server or dns error. I was able to use IE by creating a dialup connection for a couple minutes only. I ran nesth, interface reset all, routing reset all, routing, dump, bye & exit. I ran IPconfig & there was a valid address but still coulnd't use IE. After a while, the IP address went BACK to to 0.0.0.0. I tried to Ping another PC(I can use IE on this one) and I got an error about host not recognized. I already went to IPsec & TCP/IP filtering. I went to regedt32 ad checked HKey_local_machine\system\controlset001\services\dhcp. TCP/IP is set to automaticall detect IP adress. The DHCP client services is set to automatic. Device Manager says that adapter is working. The adapter is Intel Pro/100 VM. I tried to update the driver. Windows said that it found an driver that was more compatible to the adapter. I tried to install the driver but then it asked me to specify a location. I dont have CD or floppy drive with Windows 2000. Under Network adapters in Device Manager: There are 3 ITEMS that have an x. One is Wan Miniport (IPX) #2. And the other 2 is for Wireless. Also I have yahoo and google toolbar for IE. I ran Malwarebytes before I left. When I go to work I will see if the PC found anything. Also this PC doesnt have any Anti virus software. Any IDEAS?

Solve : Firefox Flash Player Plug-in turns on microphone?

Answer»

A few days ago I noticed that when I played videos online, there was an odd echo, and at times, when I turned the audio up, I'd get feedback through the speakers. I determined that the microphone had somehow got turned on, and was playing through the speakers. After doing some troubleshooting (which included comparing processes RUNNING during normal operation and during the malfunction) I've come to the conclusion that it's the Flash Player Plug-in that's causing this to happen because the problem goes away if I go into the Task Manager and shut down the "Process Tree" related to the Flash Player Plug-in.

I can tell when the mic's on by tapping next to it and seeing if the sound comes out the speakers. The odd thing is that this also happens when the computer first boots up, before a user is chosen.

Is this a common problem? Do I need to worry about my video camera being on too? I don't THINK I've done anything to warrant the NSA's attention but...

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1, Firefox version 23.0.2, and Shockwave Flash 11.7.700.224 and would appreciate any help I could get. Thanks for your time!

-HWWhile a mic being enabled like this does RAISE suspicion, I would try the following. Uninstall Firefox completely. REBOOT computer, and reinstall Firefox. Be sure the plugin you are getting is from Adobe and EVERYTHING should be good. I am not aware of any poisoned versions of Flash Plug ins that have wrongful INTENT embedded in them to listen in on you. To me it sounds like some really odd corruption, which may be resolved by a reinstall of the browser clean and flash plugin. I would also make sure you have the latest audio drivers as for it may be a bug that has a fix.

And I would also make sure that antivirus is up to date and run a full scan just to be sure its not some sort of a hijacker. I am unaware of amny malware that enables microphones. There have been hackers out there enabling webcams, cameras embedded or attached to computers to snoop etc, but I havent heard anything about a MIC hack yet.

BTW if this reinstall doesnt fix the problem and system comes up clean of any problems, what is the hardware info for this computer to look at chipsets and drivers. If its a store bought computer please specify make/model, and if its a home made build please include all specs.

Solve : Certain browsers not working fully??

Answer»

Well, I'm looking at different browsers for vending on Steam, and a couple Internet Explorer based browsers don't function properly, meaning they won't let me purchase goods off of the market.

Since I'm vending, I'm looking for the fastest BROWSER I can get that runs the scripts on the site. The one I found most efficient was Crazy Browser; albeit the last update was 2 years ago.

The problem occurs when purchasing anything I see that I can afford, I get the following message:

"There was a problem purchasing your item. The listing may have been removed. Refresh the page and try again."

Now I've done a lot of checking out with different browsers, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer itself, and a few others that have engines based of IE that work no problem, except they're slow. Upgrading internet isn't an option, and wouldn't be too efficient if there was a faster browser that I could use if it worked, right?

My computer specs:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, 8GB Ram, AMD Phenom x4 Processor, and an NVIDIA GTX 560 GPU. All of my Adobe applications are up to DATE, and I'm pretty sure about Java as well. I'm running 64-bit on those as well.
If Steam is the Valve Steam Gaming/Software site, I had an issue recently myself where I had to uninstall it and reinstall it. But issues I was getting were that I was able to access my software library, but it said I was offline, yet I was able to search online at titles. The problem I faced was when downloading a free game or demo to try out it wouldnt download and complained I was offline even though I was online, tried to select to switch to offline MODE and then online mode to force it to go online and it still stated offline. Uninstalling Steam and Reinstalling the Steam Client Fixed this and I was able to purchase a $2.49 game which was 75% off the $9.99 original price tag with no problems. I use Firefox 99.9% of the time and IE .1% of the time when software that requests to register etc pull up IE instead of FF by a direct IE "url" call.

BTW even though you do not WANT to upgrade your internet, what do you have for internet connection? And what do you have for bandwidth at www.speedtest.net for download and upload speed?

Solve : internet browser jumps?

Answer»
Hi

Hopefully this will make sense to someone.

When I use my home built desktop with windows xp on the internet I use 3 different browsers , aol 9.1, firefox 22 and internet explorer 8. All are up todate and are usually open at the same time. Resently when looking at 1 browser it will change automaticly to another , it started off being I.E. that it changed to now it's aol.

Does anyone now why / what's going on and how to stop it.

Thanks , AdamI run Firefox as well as IE and I get messages when ever I use IE asking to be the default browser and I tell it NO, so that Firefox remains the default. I use IE only for testing HTML, other than that I dont trust it for anything else. I have used Firefox since version 6 and I have had very few problems with it.

Do you get messages popping up asking to make each one the default in which you may be accidentally changing each one to default by clicking on the box to get rid of it, but the option is a designation to make that one the primary browser?
Hi

I did use to ( especially in IE ) but not for a while since I put tick in the box to stop it appearing. One thing I did notice YESTERDAY and that was the box was ticked for - always dial default connection , I've now changed it to never dial but would that cause it to keep changing even if it was already on line ?

It has DONE it again tonight but it brought IE up on top for a change.

Adamhmm... only thing I can think of is to either uninstall and reinstall AOL and see what happens or baseline the system by rebuilding it from system recovery set. You have something strange going on and not sure the exact cure for this. I havent used AOL in over 10 years with version 6.0 so not sure about how that comes into play with this issue. I would think that building it back up clean after FIRST backing up your personal DATA to external drive that this should be cured possibly.
Hi bit of an update

I think I finally found out what was causeing this problem. In interent options / CONNECTIONS I've change the settings from always dial my connection to never dial connection and it seems to have solved it.

Thanks , AdamThanks for responding back with the solution that works in case anyone else has this issue and Googles a fix for it, your CH info they may find helpful.

Solve : How come my cookie gets confused??

Answer»

Hi & THANKS for TAKING a look at my question.

This is not a problem, but, I sometimes add things to Ebay for my friend on his account. So log into his account on my computer and do the deed. When I log on to his account I choose not to remember the password in Firefox.

Later, when I log onto my account I get my details and account so on, but if I do a browse of some things to look at and add to the WATCHLIST, suddenly I find HIS NAME, but with my watchlist and active listings.

So how does the cookie (?) become so confused and change the name details?

Is it Ebay or is it my computer?

Thanks for any suggestions. ImnoGuru.Well other than deleting all the COOKIES via, History, Clear all Recent, I went through the ones that I THOUGHT were from the time frame & deleted the ones I believed were causing the problem.

So far it seems to be OK.

Hmmm was it really that easy?Actually NO it is NOT that easy.

I just got bombed with the same problem.

Solve : Google redirected me twice (browser hijack?)?

Answer»

I'm not sure if this is the right subforum for my QUESTION. When I used the home button (google.com (I'm sure)) on my browser today, it redirected me to google.comebay.com twice and then it just started going to normal google.com. The site that showed up on google.comebay.com looked EXACTLY like google, but I didn't USE it for obvious reasons. Do you think I have a browser hijack or something? I checked all my addons and everything seems fine. Should I just ignore this? Maybe it was just something weird with the DNS?It sounds like it could be a Google Redirect Virus, and if it is, it could be serious. You need to CHECK if it is and then remove it asap. If you google "Google Redirect Virus" you'll probably find a STEP by step guide which will explain it. Good luck!

Solve : Internet Speed Check?

Answer»

Hi, I know this isn't probably the best place to put this, but I'm new I really don't know where to post it.

Ok so Ive LOOKED up what is a good internet speed, some say 15mbps, some say your fine if you have at least over 8. Some say 4. But Ive been experiencing internet problems all the TIME, and my friends have a better internet than me and never encounter problems. My AVERAGE Download speed, TESTED with speedtest.net, is 3.81 mbps, is that... good? I am using Clear Wireless Internet, my friends USE road runner, is road runner better than Clear, if any one has any knowledge about the two services please comment.

Thanks, reply soon.Quote

My Average Download speed, tested with speedtest.net, is 3.81 mbps, is that... good?
The obvious question, what speed are you paying for? And, how does your actual speed compare to what you're paying for? Most ISPs offer a range of speeds and you get what you pay for, but physical limitations such as your distance from your telephone company nearest "Central Office", or relay point, if you're using DSL from your phone company, can limit your speed. For an example of offerings of multiple speeds from an ISP, see http://www.centurylink.com/home/internet/ and click on the Speeds tab there.

Why did you choose Clear Wireless Internet? Do you know anyone nearby who is using it? If so, and if you can talk to them, you could ask how the service is working for them.

edit: Is http://internet.clear.com/ your ISP?

Solve : Need help with accessing a specific website?

Answer»

I have been on a social networking internet site for over 6 years (MeetMe.com)... yesterday *poof* I couldn't access it. When I try to access it, nothing happens (I just stay on my home page) OR it will load, after about 10-15 minutes, but the login page is not correct... just a list versus pictures and correctly formatted. If it does load (incorrectly) when I try to enter my login information it just goes right back to the offkilter login screen (in other words... will not log me in). I can't access the site from my laptop or my Android device. My son is on the same site and he can login just fine (on his netbook) AND he can also access my profile from his netbook as well! A sidenote I was on the site with both my Android AND laptop at the same time before the problem occurred.

I have tried:
clearing my cookies, history, etc.
putting the site on my trusted sites
making sure the site was not down for everyone (it is/was not)
accessing the site from Facebook and e-mail (from the notification e-mails I am inundated with from MeetMe)
pinging the site from the command prompt (but I realllllly don't understand what information that provided me)
contacting the site administrator who said it was a problem with my computer communicating with the site
turning off my firewall and lowering my antivirus protection (just to see if I could access the site)
tried accessing it under compatibility view and control F5 to fully reboot the site

Meetme has always been rife with problems but this seems to be a problem with my computer and the site.

Soooo... I just need some HELP to ascertain if somewhere between my computer and the site there is a problem!

I have Google Chrome and Internet Explorer 8/Windows Vista

And it is worth noting that I have no issues at all with accessing any other website...

I am not a beginner with computers but definitely not an expert!

Since you went ahead and pinged the website, were you able to get a response?

Also try changing your dns servers

Right click your LAN or WLAN (depending if you are wireless or WIRED)
Click properties
Highlight internet protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP)
Select properties
At the bottom click where it says "Use the following DNS server addresses"
Prefered dns 8.8.8.8
Alternate dns 8.8.4.4

Post results. The above is a good idea, also just checking have you tried both Chrome and IE (you mention both) with the same result?
How about your Android, same problem? Is it connected via wifi or mobile data? If it's on wifi, the suggestion above should fix it - if you're having the same problem with two separate devices it pretty much has to be an ISP issue, and DNS is what I would suspect.Another thing. Some local service providers block or blacklist some specific sites with no explanation. But in some cases the block is not by them. Instead, the site you want is blocking you, b recuse they don't like you.

In either of the a above, one can try using a proxy. There are many.
Just one of many.
http://www.canadaproxy.org/
Do not pay for a proxy. Don't download software they offer.
Here is one I have used.
http://www.freeproxy.ca/
Hope this is of some help.
-------------
Also, ASK your ISP to change you IP.
@Yasjalnadie
I went to my LAN, Internet Protocol Version 4 (properties) changed it from 'obtain DNS server address automatically' to 'use the following...' using the 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 then Ok. I restarted my computer and I didn't see any change. Exact same problem. Did I misunderstand or miss a direction you gave me?

@Calum

I tried both Chrome and Explorer. The only difference I have seen is that Chrome goes to the list, on the site, versus the correct format, much quicker.
The Android device is the same. I CAN log in occasionally but everything looks really strange and I can’t use it.
I have a wireless router that I access the internet through… on all of my devices/computers/etc.

@Geek-9am

Here is something interesting. I tried it (pretty cool~there is so much to learn about computers!!!) using a proxy server. I CAN log into the site, using my laptop, but I can’t access any of the components. As in if I click on my profile, click on anything for that matter, I go back to the proxy website. I can’t see any of the ‘postings’ but the website LOOK as it should and I could log in. Which is a big leap in the right direction!

Soooo… what would the fact that I can log into the website with a proxy (but can’t use the site) be indicative of?

I really appreciate the help of all 3 of you, immensely! I just want to know what the problem is on sheer principle. I couldn’t even sleep last night TRYING to figure this out! Some proxy sites may have more tools for you. The site is using a secure connection and the proxy can not work around hurdles.

You are being blocked. But who? hard to day.

If you use another service, the problem with go away. Go to a neighbors''s house and use their Wi-F ™ and see.

Were you kicked from this site at any time ? ?Quote

My son is on the same site and he can login just fine (on his netbook) AND he can also access my profile from his netbook as well!
Try creating a new account and or post your protection application installed.

Solve : Waiting on ... in Firefox?

Answer»

Short and sweet, I can surf ok but frequently will get messages in the lower LEFT hand corner of Firefox (ver 22) about waiting for a site(s): PF hub, google-analytics, ip addresses, cd.doubleverify.com, a4.live.liverail, pagefair, vac.advertising, r.openx.net, flash.quantserve, lots of them. See the same thing in IE.

I use SANDBOXIE (w/Firefox) and have not had any issues since USING it. But also still have my AVAST. Occasionally run Avast scans. Never finds anything. I could download Malwarebytes but I don't trust cnet, softpedia and other sites any longer. Anyone know an absolutely clean site that I can get MWbytes from?

Importantly, I don't think it's a virus, I think it's something like cookies. It's not that I don't get to my destination, but I know the browser is exchanging info w/these sites and I don't know how to stop that so as to surf faster. Doesn't happen all the time.

I'd like to know what causes this and how I can speed up FF getting to my destination. It's highly probable I don't have a virus. Could someone explain what these messages are? Something w/ proxies?
Often pages CONTAIN items served up from other sites; Firefox is merely reporting that.

Thank you. I was running across cookies, proxies, viruses...

Solve : Please Help...Mozilla problems?

Answer»

Hi. So recently my computer was infected with spy/adware..such as that *CENSORED* Babylon toolbar, FunMoods, IMtoolbar and some Turbo thing. I ran a SpyHunt scan with the free scanner and it found several threats, however, as I don't have the money right now it of course told me to buy the program to get rid of it. I just clicked on the threats ad REMOVED them myself.. Now, ONE of the threats was in the C:/Users/Vaio/AppData/Roaming/Mozilla/Profiles folder and stupidly, desperately wanting to get these annoying things outta my system deleted the folder. I then got then a message saying it cannot be loaded, so I deleted the profiles.ini file to create a new profile..Great, now my Mozilla WORKS..my bookmarks re however, GONE.. I am devastated. I had several bookmarks in there. I then installed "Recuva" to attempt to get the deleted folders from the recycle bin back..however, of course that particular one won't show. Please, please dear god let me be able to get my bookmarks back. I am going to pull out all of my hair..Please, tell me there is SOMETHING I can do?! I feel like an idiot right now. Thank you... I have faith I can return them. Heeellp!!!!Sorry, your faith is not well founded.

For what it is worth, before making any important changes to your system, you must have a backup plan already in place. Have you ever made any BACKUPS? If so, an older copy of your bookmarks is there.

Have you ever let IE import settings from FireFox? There would be another copy of your older bookmarks.

Mozilla has tools that let you import and import settings. Both between browsers and machines. And between Users.
Sorry, that is the best I can do.

Too late now. This is for future reference.

Solve : Is it safe to enter payment card details??

Answer»

Hello, just found this forum, hope you can help.

I want to buy from http://www.customleavershoodies.co.uk/airedaledodgers

I usually only enter my payment card details if the webpage (or frame within a page) is an https: address.

On this site both the main page and the frame show as unsecured in my browser. However when I "view source" for the frame I notice it is running a script which comes from a secure page https://www.formstack.com.

Does this mean it is safe to enter my card details?

If so, how could the average internet user ever hope to figure this out?!

Thanks for some help, Dave.
As a general rule of thumb davenine, entering credit card details on any website can leave you exposed to credit card fraud.
You should email them for an alternative method of payment in my opinion. Check also that they have an actual address and phone number and an alternative communication method.

Just how much do you know about this commercial enterprise?

I suggest that you get a second card with a small limit on it, say $1000, to use for such transactions. That way you are limiting your exposure.

Even you card provider may ignore your tale should a sudden transaction max out your card without you knowing.

It could be up to 55 days before you become aware of such an event, in which case the perpetrator is long gone.

But then again I am paranoid about credit cards on the net. Try paypal or some other method of payment. You can ask for a cash on delivery option or other secured payment like paypalQuote from: davenine on June 17, 2013, 03:55:01 PM

You should always stick to that way of identifying websites that are safe for online financial transactions. Anytime you encounter a website which does not switch from http:to https: when you get to the stage where it asks for credit card info, proceed no further. In addition to the https: prefix for the web address, your browser should show an icon (usually an image of a lock on locked position) indicating the site is secure.

Yes, you are paranoid. I've made scores of online purchases with a credit card. If you worry about using your card card on amazon.com, newegg.com, target.com, kohls.com, lowes.com, etc. - I could go on and on - then you should probably should not have a credit card since using a credit card on such sites is no riskier than using a credit card in a restaurant or retail store. I'd go even further- With an on-line site, many browser features such as the lock icon, https, and other stuff protects you. With a retail location, you merely have to assume that the retail outlet and all the framework between it taking your data and using that data to actually charge you is secure- there is no guarantee. You don't get a "lock icon" basically- you have no idea if it's actually secure or if anybody can stick a flash drive in the office PC and steal all the credit card numbers and other information they want.I just recently had a credit card fraud issue. Thee is no indication the vendor was at fault. It is taking me a period of time to get this fixed. It there is farad, part of the burden falls non you even if you have taken every precaution.

No, I am not really paranoid about credit cards. I have used credit cards for years here and inn other places. Only recently have I had problems. Apparently credit card fraud is a big criminal activity. Limiting your loss is a good idea. But why let a criminal have even $38 of your money.

Some merchants will accept a money order for an item. That can delay deliver for several days. And there still is the risk the money order could get lost or stolen.
Here are typical promises made by big companies in the USA
Quote
American Express
If you have an American Express card you are already covered by their consumer protection plan at no extra cost to you. Their Identity Theft Assistance program gives you access to operators around the clock who can take action at once. Unlike other cards where you may be responsible for the first $50 of fraud, American Express has you covered.
Equifax
Along with Trans Union and Experian, Equifax is one of the three credit reporting bureaus that monitor your credit. When you enroll in their ID Patrol plan, Equifax will keep tabs on all three of your credit reports and provide alerts to you in the event key changes are made to your credit. You also gain access to credit repair specialists and have a $1 million theft insurance policy to back you up.
Visa
Similar to American Express, Visa offers a consumer protection plan to cardholders in their NETWORK for no extra charge. Cardholders have all of their expenses covered by Visa and have access to a panel of trained volunteers who can help you in the event of identity theft.

As I stated earlier, even if fraud is found, the burden falls on you to do something Never assume the company really wants your best interest. Two days ago i was stone-walled be a very reputable firm, even after I had reported the fraud weeks earlier. It will take a few more days to find out if they will credit me the loss.
Be careful.Quote from: soybean on August 07, 2013, 07:45:40 AM

I actually have quite a few credit cards, sometimes I think too many... (some are even in my name too Hahahahaha.)

There have also been recent cases where business owners have been hacked in such a way and held to ransom by the hacker to release their COMPUTERS and information back to them. Russian hackers hold medical centre to ransom

or pay $50 excess for a lesser transaction. (Depending on your provider.)

I think I'll keep my suspicions at a high level when using credit anytime.

paranoia is by definition irrational. The problem in this case is that- as you've shown- it's EASY to cite some specific counter-case where somebody having been paranoid would have helped them or prevented something. EG. if the owners of the business you mention were paranoid. But I've always thought of that more like a "stopped clock" argument- which is to say, it stems from this logic.

A. Bad thing can happen. (For example, Credit card fraud)
B. By holding a irrational skepticism, we can prevent that thing from happening to us.
C. Therefore, irrational skepticism is good!

It's a logical fallacy- I believe it's called "AFFIRMING the consequent". You could make a equally rational argument to carry a non-red parachute everywhere you go because there is a possibility that you might need to help a bull escape from a fire in a third story apartment. (this why it cannot be red). Of course the first actually has some reasonable syllogism but it's still highly unlikely; beyond basic awareness any further skepticism will typically result in simply making things harder on yourself.

BC is right. Being paranoid should not be considered normal. The better term would be cautious or even skeptical.
One needs to be careful, cautious or skeptical with credit card plans. If you plan to travel, even inside your own country, you need either a credit card or travelers checks in addition to cash. Things happen.

As for buying online, here in our house we do it very often. About three times we had to take action because of some kind of fraud with credit cards. I don't know of anything I could have don differently.

There is a new movie out called "Identity Theft" and has been in theaters.

Solve : Firefox 23 Released?

Answer»

Mozilla Firefox 23.0 released.
6th August 2013

Check out "What’s New" and "Known Issues" for this version of Firefox:
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/23.0/releasenotes/

Download Firefox in your language:
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/ Thanks for heads up... going to update when i get home from work.

One odd thing that I have noticed with 22 is that if I have the browser open for a while 5 or 6 hours of surfing etc, my system memory shows more and more used over time to around 1.4GB even if browser tabs have been closed etc. If I close FF and re-open it, it goes back to Windows 7 32-bit running on 750MB idle and 850MB of 3GB RAM with browser open clean to home page of google. Not sure if the memory consumption is a leak or a temp cache in RAM that gets dumped when the browser is closed and reopened.

But looking here: https://www.mozilla.org/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox.html

At the bottom of the list for many versions is "Miscellaneous memory safety hazards" with versions appended to them and it appears that even in FF 23 there are some still outstanding to be LABELED as critical. One of the controversial changes to this version is the removal of the option to disable Javascript, which is now enabled by default and provides no option to disable it, WITHOUT using about:config. I THINK I wrote a mention of this back when the change was first made public in some early alphas for version 23.

This is not 22-specific and has been a massive issue with Firefox pretty much since it was released. As far as I understand it it actually stems from their use of a conservative Garbage COLLECTOR framework in C++. I could go into numerous technical details but the jist of it is that Garbage Collection has been shown to be unreliable in languages like C++- the Garbage Collector has to be conservative because if it was to cleanup a object that was REFERENCED the program would crash, so if in doubt it let's it sit around. having more add-ons seems to cause more problems; and based on about:memory after having a large working set in FF a lot of the "leaks" appear to be in the Javascript interpreter.

Also thanks for clarification on the memory issue that I just noticed in FF 22 that I guess has been an issue for a while now and I didnt notice it with prior versions because I wasnt looking for it. I just stumbled upon it with Win 7 and resource gadget that shows CPU and Memory use that was built into Win 7. Already know about the risk of still running gadgets. The risk only comes with running dirty ones from what I read.
