Solve : Unlimited Email Providers??

Answer»

I run a Surveillance program that sends me many emails fo/from my gmail account. As a result, I am often locked out of my account for HOURS.. I need a preferable free email prover that would allow me to send/receive all of these emails (several hundred a day). Do you have any suggestions. If need be, I could go wit a paid provider. Thanks for your suggestions.I too suffered from the same problem which I was sending mails to the registered users for my college Technical Event.

Its the fact that Telephone Regulatory Authority of the Nation limits the maximum mails per hour.

Hence u can get a proper authorization from the Authority and can send mails.

Indeed, you might have to do that. Here's one: https://www.fastmail.fm/signup/business.htmlThe OP should buy e-mail space.
For about $10 a month he can buy a large e-mail service from one of the major VENDORS. PRICES vary, but 2 GB for $9 is available.
For more reliable service, he can get Microsoft Exchange server. That would be overkill. But it is a possible solution where reliability is critical.
It makes sense to pay for what you REALLY need.
It's not crazy to pay for an email account (USA Today)

Solve : Internet Connection Problems (Sort of) Help?

Answer»

Okay, so my computer decided to start being difficult. I'm having problems CONNECTING to the internet but only for some sites. Normal ones like Yahoo, FanFiction and WattPad are fine but the trouble starts when I get to Facebook. I log on and I can read things but I can't respond or do anything on it like that. all the pictures show up but ill go onto my messages and nothing with show up. I can't comment or message. And this other website for loans wont work either! it keeps telling me no connection but I don't understand why. I've bought Webroot protection and TuneUp Utilities and neither help. Can you please? What browsers do you refer or have you TRIED a different one to check on the difference? There was once a problem I've encountered with my FB messages being blank on IE but not in Firefox. The problem seems to be temporary only. Other things that you might have to stop using are this Tuneup Utilities and try updating your flash plugins. Thank you so much! I downloaded FireFox and the internet started WORKING. I was just using the normal default browser.

Solve : My browsers won't open??

Answer»

My browsers were working just fine yesterday. That is, until I downloaded another image viewing program.
Then some things started to change.

After I had downloaded that program, Firefox had started lagging and freezing a lot longer than it usually does. When it froze up for the twentieth time, I closed it. I didn't think much of it since I always open up more that 15 tabs in one window.

One hour LATER, though, the same thing happened. Firefox would lag and freeze even though I only had one tab open. And after a while, it wouldn't open at all -- and the same thing happened with I.E., too. What did you download and from where did you download it? And did you just download it or did you install it?Irfanview from http://www.irfanview.com/. I installed it.IrfanView is a well know photo editing program, so I doubt it's the real cause of the problem. But, since you say your problem started after installing it, why not uninstall it? I suggest you also restore Windows to a Restore Point dated before you installed IrfanView. Thanks. System restore seems to have fixed the problem.
The thing is, though, is that I need the program for a PROJECT I'm working on. I want to know if there's anyway to run/install that program without it messing with my browsers? Many other image editing programs are available but, if you really need IrfanView for your project, you might post your question https://irfanview-forum.de/forum.php.

Of course, you could install IrfanView again and see whether the problem arises again. If you do so, I suggest you disable your anti-virus program while installing it. Ifrfanview is an old and well REGARDED product - it really shouldn't cause any problems However, I've just replaced it on a number of systems with Faststone Image Viewer, which I think is outstanding: http://faststone-image-viewer.soft32.com/free-download/?lp=adwords&kw=Faststone+image+viewer&mt=e&ad=25477446918&pl=&ds=s&gclid=CMb6oI3-yLgCFYOe4Aod0jsAGQIt sounds to me like IrfanViewer is conflicting with something that the browsers normally carry out such as an association with a filetype.

There's lot of ways you could deal with this but my advice is to uninstall IrfanViewer and use the portable app version INSTEAD. Portable apps don't install in the same way that standard software does, they run in their own space so there shouldn't be any conflicts.
http://www.tekmoz.com/tekmoz_downloads/#portable-apps

If it continues to cause problems then consider using Google picasa or something else or try re-installing your browser of choice and it should become the default program that associates itself with whatever filetype is causing the issue.

Solve : AOL "BLERK!" notice & mysterious tabs?

Answer»

I was away for a few days and when I came home I signed on to my computer and instead of it opening to my sign in page for AOL I got a BLERK! window from AOL telling me that my sign-in got derailed. In addition there were numerous tabs that said, "Problem Loading Page" and each tab had a different web ADDRESS. I closed all the tabs and then went to AOL and signed on as usual. No problem. However, the next day when I signed on I got the same BLERK! page and all those tabs. I've tried clearing Cookies and Firefox is set to clear History, nothing seems to work. Does anyone know what is going on here and how to cure it? Thank you,

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]How do you connect to the internet?

My thoughts are that the browser is fetching pages when the internet connection may not have been established yet. I dont use AOL, and havent since AROUND 2001 with dial-up, but I have broadband and have a Toshiba netbook with an Atom processor and have had times where I am faster than the computer to establish a connection to the internet and I get error messages in firefox because the internet connection had not been established yet over wifi to the router. If I wait for all SERVICES to complete (a few minutes) and wifi handshake to be established it works flawlessly.

What are you running for a computer?I have a Lenovo IdeaCentreK410 Desktop (10 months old), 64 bit, 1Terabyte HD, dual monitors

I RECENTLY switched from Yahoo email to AOL and I've had Firefox for years and keep it updated along with all of the available updates from Microsoft for Windows 7 Prof. I have Hughesnet for an internet provider, however, they leave a lot to be desired in the speed & satisfaction departments. (Not a company I would recommend.)

I don't know whether this problem lies with AOL or with Firefox. I used CCleaner to clean out the history and cookies and that didn't help. Do you think that uninstalling Firefox and re-installing might help? Thank you
HUGHES Net is definately not a good internet connection. I have had clients who where out in the woods with only Dial-up or Satellite make the investment to go with Satellite without consulting with me first, and then find it to be worse than their dial-up connection was prior with lack of stability. They got sold into the investment by the term "high-speed" which if it was working better, it would be faster than 56k dial-up, but they had nothing but problems.

If you can bring this laptop somewhere where there is free wifi or a friends house etc to connect to their broadband or dsl connection, I would test to see if the problem goes away. I believe your problem is with Hughes Net.

Firefox is a very good browser and the blerk is a lack of service to the ISP I believe, where the internet is down or degraded and a timeout occurs with blerk. I am almost certain that if you had a good reliable internet connection the problem would be gone.

Solve : AOL - problem making settings for font, font size, signature, etc.?

Answer»

I finally gave up on Yahoo for my email as I got tired of the slowness, re-appearance of deleted emails, non-delivery of emails, etc., So, back to AOL and I set a Signature when I first set it up, however, now that I am a little more familiar with it I would LIKE to set the font and font size and a few other settings, however, every time I make these changes and hit the SAVE, AOL tells me that my signature is too long or too big. I used a smaller size font, still told me it was too big or too long; shortened it to 3 little words, still wouldn't work. Finally, I eliminated the Signature all together, made all my other changes, clicked SAVE and got the same message that the Signature was too big or too long and it wouldn't accept the other changes until the Signature was taken care of. Has ANYONE else had this PROBLEM with AOL settings? I just GET tired of having to set the font to a 12 or 14pt every time I write an email. Thank you,

Solve : Disk Space for Temporary Internet Files - Problem?

Answer»

I am using IE8 and since yetrday onwards the browser has STOPPED KEEPING HISTORY items in the hstory folder. Only a blank sapce occurs when I click on History from the Menu Bar.

So I went to : Tools > Interent Options > Under Browsing History > Settings > Under Temporary Internet Files > there is an option : Disk Space to Use
And there is a small box in White where you can set the space on disk as a number ranging from 8MB to 1024MB by TYPING IT manually or simply CLICKING THE UP- DOWN ARROWS TO INCREAE OR DECREAE the number of MBs.

PROBLEM : In my Settings Page THE UP-DOWN ARROWS WONT INCREASE THE NUMBER BEYOND 10MB.

if I try to Manually Type in the Number of MBs and the figure is larger than 8MBs I get an error Mesage stating:

"PLEASE SELECT A VALUE BETWEEN 8 AND 8 FOR THE DISK SAPCE TO USE FOR TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES"

And the Number shown always becomes ZERO no matter what value I Type in.

*** *** ***

I cannot solve this error no matter what I have tried , going to folder options etc is of no use.
I cant store History neither are my Temporary Internet files stored for later viewing.

Please help me out with this as to how to get the MANUALLY TYPING option to start working again and allot the disk space available in the Optimal Range of 50-250MB as suggested by IE8 so that History and Internet Files can be viewed. How much free space is there on the drive?Hi Allan, there is around 9 GB on the Hard Drive still free. Space is not a problem.

The Option of TYPING IN the number of MBs or Adjusting it with Up and Down arrows is LOCKED , and whatever number I type in, the mentioned error message comes up and the typed value drops back to ZERO automatically.

And the Arrows are actually not working when clicked on them ie they do not increase the value beyond 10MBs ie they are LOCKED beyond 10 MB.http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=195163With 9G free why would you set it to anything larger ? ?
History file is text based anyways...thats alot of text.
What is the size of this HDD ? ?
Sounds like it's time for some housekeeping anyways. You are making a misake Patio, I SAID free HDD space ie C Drive in my case is 9GB and the disk space for Temporary Internet Files is alloted to just 10 MB.

Get the difference now, between GBs and MBs. 9GB and 10 MB(only).

So no House Keeping here!My bad...
However whats the size of the drive ? ?Quote from: Allan on April 02, 2010, 07:35:26 AM

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=195163
I know this is an old thread, but I ran into the exact same issue. Bazooka had a PERFECT description of the problem. I signed up for this site just to post the solution.

Symptoms:

Internet Options > General > Browser History | Settings > Disk space to use
--> This is set to 0 MB, and cannot be changed beyond 10 MB. You can change this to 8, but the change won't stick.
--> Attempts to change this value yields the following error message:
"Please select a value between 8 and 8 for how much disk space Temporary Internet Files may use"

Internet Options > General > Browser History | Settings > Current location
--> This is completely blank. This is a clue as to why it's set to 0 MB.

Internet Options > General > Browser History | Settings > Move folder ...
--> This does not work

Deleting the Temporary Internet Files folder does not help:
C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\

Solution:

* Login as a new user, and that user should not have this problem.
* Or delete the corrupted user PROFILE, and recreate it
There might be a more surgical solution, but these were acceptable for me

Reasoning:

I don't care enough to verify this, but the machine was running IE 10. After downgrading to IE 9, existing users' profiles that had used IE 10 were corrupted. However, brand new users were not impacted.

Solve : Firefox 21.0 problem with iGoogle?

Answer»

I'm using Firefox 21.0 and I have my iGoogle page as my home page. Since about 24 hours ago, when I click on the Home button I get a page which I have seen described as a "Stock quote disclaimer". The url in the address bar is what I expect my home page to be, namely http://www.google.co.uk/ig

There is a link "Go to Google.com" and when I click that I get taken to my regular iGoogle home page, and http://www.google.com/ig is still showing in the address bar.

I have cleared the Firefox CACHE, history, and cookies.

It doesn't HAPPEN with IE 10.0.9200.16618, Google Chrome 27.0.1453.116 m, or Opera 12.15.

I did a Google (!) search and found references to a spate of reports of the same thing in 2011, and people were told to wait a few hours, but it has been going on for over 24 hours now.

Anybody know anything about this, or got any ideas?
Have you tried flushing your DNS cache? I doubt that is the issue but it might be worth a shot.
Also, it might be worth trying with either a fresh Firefox profile, or a fresh install - no need to wipe your install, you could use Firefox portable, just for a test, to rule out your browser install or profile.
It's very odd that the problem is only affecting Firefox.Hi, Calum, thanks for replying. I've tried flushing the DNS cache, and using Google's 8.8.8.8 Public DNS, and subscribing to openDNS & then using their servers, and what I have finally done now is change my home page to www.google.com, which the Home button always takes me to, and then I just type /ig at the end in the address bar if I wish to see iGoogle, which is vanishing in November anyhow. I am fooling AROUND with Protopage* to replace iGoogle so I guess I won't worry over MUCH. I will now try Firefox portable...

*I have stopped, having found out about their "bait and switch" tactics (after you start using their custom "free" homepage, you get big ugly ads appearing with a "Remove these ads for $2.99 a month" message.)
UPDATE: I changed the url from google.co.uk/ig to google.com/ig and the home button takes me straight to my iGoogle page, no stock price disclaimer. One odd thing is that the plain vanilla Google.uk page shows a malformed Google logo which does not appear in IE10 nor does it appear in Firefox 15.0.1 running in a Linux virtual machine, or Firefox 21.0 on XP on my laptop. (none of these do the stock disclaimer thing either).

I had that exact same problem just RECENTLY Salmon Trout. The malformed Google appearing in the home screen.

Have you downloaded anything recently that might have had a subtle "I agree' greyed out section.
Turned out to be, my page was infiltrated by Babylon.

Generally I would say to look at "Tools, Options, General" and reset the home page you desire.Quote from: ImnoGuru on June 27, 2013, 08:16:11 AM

Not that I know of.

That setting never changed.

I changed it myself from google.co.uk/ig to google.com/ig and the problem went away. If I change it back, the disclaimer is still there.
Same problem with FF22?Quote from: Allan on June 27, 2013, 08:40:59 AM
Same problem with FF22?

Yes. I have just noticed that it occurs on both google.com/ig and google.co.uk/ig when the relevant domain is forbidden in NoScript and goes away when it is allowed. Strike that. It comes and goes!

Quote

This is no longer true. Either one gets the disclaimer. If I monkey around with User Agent Switcher I can make it go away but, it seems, not for ever.

What happens with launching safe mode Firefox from the Start Menu ? ?

What happens with launching safe mode Firefox from the Start Menu ? ?
I suspect one or more broken extensions.

Problem does not occur in safe mode; I tried disabling extensions one by one, no change until I went to disable NoScript (version 2.6.6.6) - it suggested that this was dangerous and suggested leaving it enabled and choosing "Disable script checking globally" instead. I did this and the problem went away. I re-enabled script checking globally and it came back. I noticed that when in the iGoogle page I have 3 sites available in the NoScript right click menu - google.com, gstatic.com, and googleusercontent.com. If I allow all 3 the problem seems (for now) to go away. So thanks, Patio, for pointing me in the right direction (I think).
You're more than Welcome Salmon...
There may be a newer update for NoScript as well...

Solve : Why does my google page keep changing??

Answer»

Just a quicky today. I'm curious why my google page keeps changing?

Have they changed the way they provide the pages?
My pages, when I do a search, come up with a list of potentials for me to choose and the google word down the bottom with the numbers 0123456789, so on, to click on to get to the next page.

Then on other days maybe other laptops/computers, I get the list of searches in a CONTINUOUS length, with a page 2 separator, then page 3, page 4 and so on & I just scan down down down for as many pages I like.

Oh and another quick question with the Firefox most used website pages, ( you know the 9 boxes you can pin and lock), is that just an add-on to FF & how come this computer doesn't have it. I have automatic updates. It should have added it to this one too by now surely? This one uses FF 21 and Vista home, and the others would probably be about the same I assume at this point in time.
Each of my laptops seem to provide a different set up.

Thank you for your input. ImnoGuru. Quote from: ImnoGuru on June 26, 2013, 07:05:45 AM

I believe you mean the MODIFIED Google logo at the bottom of the search page, the logo with a string of 10 instances of letter o and numbers, WITH SPACES, 1 2 3 4 ... 10. Right?

Hmm, let's see here. I just did a search on early+vintage+farm+tractors and the results page says it found about 5,480,000 results. Each page only displays 10 results plus a few sponsored results. So, if I divide 5,480,000 by 10, I get 548,000, i.e. 548,000 pages. So, what you're telling me is that you would see 548,000 pages all at once, with the pages merely separated by a horizontal line. Is that correct? Waaay too many variables to list here why this is occurring...
Each PC would have to:
Have the same ver. of FireFox
Have the same extensions/themes etc. installed
Have the User accounts/preferences setup identically
Have the Google Search page settings set identically...

Etc. etc. etc.Ah, I know what you mean in regards to seeing endless pages separated by lines - they don't all display at once, they load as you scroll down, correct? That used to be a setting on the Google search page, but I don't see it any more, which is very odd, so I can't really help on that I'm afraid.

As for Firefox's recently visited pages, I'm unsure why it is disabled as it's been a feature for a while now. You could try the following: type in about:config into the Firefox address bar and hit enter, continue past the warning if it appears. Type newtab into the filter bar, then you'll see a preference named browser.newtab.url - this should be set to about:newtab for that page to display when you open a new tab. That setting may have been changed by an extension or just not set properly in an update, but check it and see.Soybean...Google Search maxes out at 100 results per page now...Quote from: patio on June 26, 2013, 09:53:25 AM
Soybean...Google Search maxes out at 100 results per page now...
It does IF you are logged in and you have set your search settings for a display of 100 results per page. And, in order to change from the default of 10 results/page to a higher #, you have to turn off Google Instant Predictions, a condition some users might not want to accept.

Gotcha...Thanxx for the info.soybean, yes that's right. The "Gooooooogle" is on one computer and then on another it is an ONGOING list of pages when you scan down.

And on the second part yes also.... I get on ((Hmmm I just found out that that laptop has win 7) , Ah, someone changed the drive. That's not my original drive, this one is only an 80 Gb)).

I agree with patio that there would be too many variables.

That's why I was confused. I bought THREE laptops for the business, they go out, they come back. Mine of course stays with me always. They were all the same/(ish), as in had vista, FF and so on & regularly get back to me for checking for infections, backups and other details. As Admin I get to set it the way I like it, sometimes they add different extensions, but thats OK. I can deal with a bit of individuality.

I have never seen someone KNOCK off a hard drive. Hahahaha. (Too easy to find out who that was.)
I like a bit of consistency in things like this so I can go from one computer to the next and use the exact same (or close to it) profile.

Calum has it. Google loads the pages in an almost endless list.
Interesting Calum, that you dont see that any more and here am I asking about exactly that??? I wonder if Windows has something to do with that?

As for the second part. Thank you for your instructions for newtab.
Mine has a value of, about:blank.
Is there a way to edit it or is that done in FF somewhere?

Thanks ImnoGuru.

Solve : Yahoo Issues?

Answer»

I'm not sure as to if this is the Forum I should be on, but this is my problem. Yahoo has been giving me problems lately as far as freezing up, returning emails as undeliverable, being extremely slow in responding, and opening an email of a sender to the top of the one I've actually clicked on. I thought possibly it was Firefox, so I started up with Internet Explorer and then tried Opera and the same things were happening. I also have an email account with AOL and AOL wasn't having any of the problems that Yahoo was exhibiting regardless of which browser I used. What I'd like to know is if anyone else out there is having the same or similar problems with Yahoo email?I just tested it in IE and Opera with my Windows 8 laptop and it worked right in both browsers. Are you using the latest VERSION of Yahoo Mail?Yes, Soybean, I have the latest Yahoo and it seems to me that upgrading to the newest version is when the problems started. I also had problems with the new Yahoo email, besides not liking the format. I still use the old Yahoo Classic Mail even though Yahoo infrequently closes down the link. Then I look around the blogosphere and get another link to Yahoo Classic. Here is the one that I use now:

http://us.mc1216.mail.yahoo.com/mc/welcome

It takes you to the Yahoo Mail classic sign-in page. I keep the link as a bookmark and always go back to bookmarks and use this link to return to Yahoo Mail classic if I leave Mail Classic for any reason . Any other link, as the one on the Yahoo main page will bring up the new Yahoo mail. I find it cold and counter-intuitive. Mail Classic is more comfortable to use, for me. Thank you, bill30955. I will try that and see if it works out better for me. It really is so time consuming and annoying, but I hate to give up on Yahoo if the tried and true Classic works better. Here is a link to another( more complicated) WAY to return to Yahoo Mail Classic:

http://malaysia.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110726030130AANmNFT

I did not use this solution since I already had found a simpler link back to Classic without having to change any browser settings. I know that sooner or later Yahoo will shut down my current link to Classic and then I will look around and find another link. I have a lot of work related and tax sites that I use Yahoo as my go-to email and if I have to change my e-mail client it would take some doing. I do also use AOL email in its basic form. It is very good and has a lot of ways to block spam and unwanted emails. Coupled with AdBlock Plus on my Firefox browser to eliminate annoying advertising I would then switch all to AOL mail and import all my contacts over. I tried the suggestion for going back to Yahoo Classic and apparently that is what I already have. Something had CHANGED with Yahoo a few months ago in that I now have to sign in twice to get to my email, so I assumed that I had an upgrade to their email program. Anyway, I guess the only way for me to go at this point is to upgrade to whatever is their newest version. However, I've tried to find a tab, button, tool, whatever to do this and can't find it anywhere on the email page. I Googled for Yahoo updates and all I could find was updates for the Messenger program which I am not interested in. Does anyone know how I can locate on my computer exactly what version of Yahoo I have and if it isn't the newest, how do I get that? Thank you, There should be a link to the newest version of Yahoo mail on your Yahoo mail Inbox page. It is in the upper right corner and also in upper left corner near your name. And also in the dropdown options box also located in upper right corner of page. see attached.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Hello bill30955, my Yahoo page doesn't have anything like what you are showing in your last answer. I am attaching (at least I hope I am) a snip of what the top of my Yahoo Mail page looks like. I know I'm missing something, but I just don't know what or where it is? Thank you

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]The snip that I SENT you was from Yahoo Mail Classic. You apparently are already in the latest Yahoo Mail. If still having trouble with it why not close the account (they will keep it reserved for you for 6 months I think) and switch to Yahoo's YMail. I know people who did so and have not had any problems. I would open a new Ymail account if you want to stay with Yahoo as email provider and import all your contacts from Yahoo Mail. See if it runs smoother than Yahoo Mail. I know that sooner or later they will shut me down on Classic and I will have to make a choice whether to stay with Yahoo Mail or go somewhere else. I do believe that for SIMPLICITY's sake that AOL Mail basic is much easier to use.Thank you for your help. I think I will just give up on Yahoo and go back to AOL. I've started a new email account with AOL, so all I have to figure out is how to get my Contacts and Bookmarks transferred to AOL without going through 100s of manual transfers. Thanks again.Save and merge Yahoo Contacts...Thank you, Patio. I did manage to get my Contacts transferred, now I'm trying to figure out how to get my Bookmarks transferred to Favorites and how to transfer my emails from Yahoo to AOL.I to hate the new yahoo mail the first link just brings up the new mail yukky

Any insight would be appreciated.

Solve : IE9 and amazon MP3?

Answer»

I'm using IE9 in Windows Vista H.P. The last couple of weeks when I try to download an MP3 off Amazon, it fails every time. It will load in the Cloud player but won't download from there. India C.S says there is nothing they can do because it's a local file error. Also, some of the music I have downloaded from Amazon has disappeared. iTunes works fine, although can't figure out how to get that music to Windows Media Player. Is it the browser? It has been working up until now. Any ideas?
JimI just purchased music from Amazon for the first time and downloaded it via IE9. Since it worked for me, I don't know what your problem is. I'm under the impression the amazon downloader uses Java. Do you have Java installed and is it updated? I just got a Java update today; it's Version 7 Update 5.

And, do you have the Amazon MP3 Downloader installed? Do you see it in your Programs menu?

Have you made any changes to your system since the last time you were ABLE to download music?

Do you have any other browser installed? If so, try using it to download music. I tried IE8 but no luck. The only thing different was the error message. It said "Amazon Downloader has stopped working. Windows checking for solution". Have the latest Java and the downloader installed. Is there any way to burn a CD directly from Cloud player. I guess for sure it's not the browser.
I think soybean meant 'try another browser' like FireFox or Google Chrome, not a previous version of the same browser.Just tried Google Chrome. I think I'm losing my mind. There has to be something stupid that I'm missing. ACTUALLY, I bought a computer because my wife wanted to learn Word. She's barely touched it.I'm having the same problem. My Windows 7 laptop just received a new hard drive, so I'm going through re-establishing passwords and various settings that I had in the past. Today, for the first time with this hard drive, I purchased a song at Amazon and experienced the same thing described here. I used IE 10 and Chrome 26.0.1410.64 m and Firefox 20.0.1 and both returned the 'local file error' problem. I went to the folder and unchecked "read only" to make sure I had write privileges. I use lots of interactive sites that require Java to be up-to-date so I am sure my Java is OK.

The song was from a new artist, and it failed to create a folder for the artist in addition to failing to download the song into the folder.

When my hard drive was replaced, the Systems person misspelled my name in the username. So even though we went to CONTROL Panel - User Accounts and fixed the spelling there, the folder is still misspelled at C:\users. I can't figure out how to rename the folder. But to fix the Amazon download problem I went to Amazon MP3 Downloader window, CLICKED on File - Preferences, and changed the Download Folder location.

Solve : edit mode?

Answer» W7, IE10.

I think it started with IE 8 or 9. I could no longer right click on a local HTML PAGE and select Edit. It wasn't there. This was soooo HANDY. Instead, there is a PAGE tab at the top and when you click it, one of the selections is EDIT PAGE WITH NOTEPAD. Okay, I could live with that.

The problem is that IE10, sometimes the edit selection is there and sometimes it isn't. This is a real hassle, as then I have to go to the directory, right click the FILE, and OPEN WITH, to bring it up in NOTEPAD.

Anyone have a clue as to why that would be intermittant? Does anyone else experience this with IE10?

Thanks in advance for any info.

****
I want to thank all the guys and gals at CH. I've been hitting it pretty hard lately. I've just been in the mood to get all these nagging little inconsistancies answered.
I believe it's "intermittent" because the web designer can probably impose such a restriction on their pages.

I'm curious about what your purpose. I have the impression you just feel at liberty to grab any web page you feel like and do some experimental editing of it. Are you trying to become a web DEVELOPER? I can't see why you should get that feeling? I'm talking about MY web pages. Local HTML means pages that I use here on my computer for several different things that never go to the web.

I know nothing about anti-edit actions that could be put on web pages, and as I wrote them, I doubt they could be there - especially intermittantly.

Modified:
I do of course, have web pages out there, also mine, and experience the same problems when editing them here before sending them up.
I really can't see this as an issue. You simply don't need to open web pages in Notepad or whatever you use to edit by opening from a right-click menu option within your browser.

I suggest you get Notepad++ for a web page editor. It's vastly better than Windows Notepad. Notepad++ has a tabbed interface which allows you to have multiple pages open in it at the same time. I APPRECIATE the suggestion, but that isn't the issue. I was looking for clues as to why this is intermittant in IE10? I can't escape the feeling that it is something I'm doing here that causes that.

It is often handy, when you are looking to add something to a page, to be able to study the page as it is displayed with HTML, then being able to simply right click, or click on that PAGE tab to bring it up in NOTEPAD.

Thank you for your help.
Regarding the intermittent point, I encounter the same if viewing public web pages. So, again, in that case, I'm sure this depends on how the page was developed. Perhaps the hosting web server also has something to do with this. As to why you get intermittent behavior from IE with pages you've developed, I have no idea without actually seeing your web page files.

You can always view source by right clicking on the page and selecting View source from the menu or by clicking on Page on the Command Bar at the top of IE and selecting View source. If you open a View-source panel, you can save it as a file. Then, you could open that file with Notepad.

Solve : Download Bar?

Answer»

Is there a way to get rid of the "download bar" that pops up in Google Chrome? I read that you could go into "chrome://FLAGS/" and shut it off but I didn't see it in there. Right now my browser is Opera but it seems really slow lately so I am looking around for a different one. I haven't USED EI in along time but am trying it out and it seems faster. I just built a new computer and it seems slow. I did have a problem with my U Verse set-up for a few days. I kept getting a message on my TV about a lost signal and my internet connection would stop too. I shut off the U Verse MODEM and let it set for a couple of minutes then restarted it. That seemed to take care of it. That flags thing was removed in Chrome version 22. The download bar annoys a lot of PEOPLE but Google don't seem willing to fix it. One workaround is to go to the Chrome webstore and look for an extension called "Always Clear Downloads".

I looked at "Always Clear Downloads" then deleted Google Chrome.

Solve : browsing history help?

Answer»

So I come home from work today and my browser history has been erased(something I never do[and seems to happen more frequently lately]) and I have a feeling that it is my roommate lookin up something he isn't supposed to on my computer. I was looking for a way to find the history, and I remembered a long time ago my friends mother showed me a way that you could check your browsing history (that can't be erased) using your IP ADDRESS I believe, but for the life of me can't remember how she did it. Is there anyone on here who might be able to help me out with this issue.By IP if your router has logging enabled you can look at the history logs in the router and see where someone has gone, but these overwrite themselves after a period of time otherwise the router WOULD run out of memory to log. So its best to look at this as fresh as possible.

ALSO.... a cool device you can add if you have a PS2 style keyboard jack is a hardware keylogger. They come in various storage capacities, but you can record ALL KEYSTROKES and look at where they went, what they typed etc. So if they went where they shouldnt on your system, you'd know real fast! These devices are cheap too. It plugs in line with your already existing PS2 jacked keyboard of you have this setup. And the only way they can bypass this is if they knew you added this device and remove it and plug the keyboard in directly, then plug it back in line with the keyboard before you get home. So if you say HEY YOU WENT TO ....... AND THIS IS HOW I KNOW... then its a 1 time use deal because next time they would be unplugging this device! It would be best to make them paranoid probably and say that your system is connected to a internet traffic site and there is no way to bypass it on your computer.

Personally, I wouldnt leave my computer open for access and would use a difficult password. If they want to surf porn or something else they can do that on their computer instead. The biggest problem you could face is if they are doing soemthing illegal and its your computer. You could be arrested as if you were them! Give him a limited account...sooner the better.

However at the risk of offending the OP this sounds like he's the one trying to dig up browse histories for whatever reasons.
Good story though...I'm pretty sure that the logs are what she showed me, but I don't know how to access them. I'm pretty sure all she used was internet explorer and something pertaining to her ip address and it called up the log. As for the device it sounds like it might be a neat thing to try out but I'm sure he would probably figure that out and just unplug it, so in this circumstance maybe not so fitting.

@ patio;
There's no need for me to get offended as you don't know me. I don't wish to access any other address's simply the one that my computer uses.

ETA: I did create him a restricted account, but still would like to know what he was looking at as he is denying it even happening. If you have a router with logging enabled, and if it has this logging feature, since many routers are different from one another, you can get to the router which is probably at 192.168.1.1 if your IP address of the computer is 192.168.1.x where x is any number from 0 to 255, but USUALLY a number from 2 to 255. Most routers default to address of .1 so if you know your IP address of the computer is even 10.10.112.2, then type 10.10.112.1 in the browser and if the router is at that IP you should be greeted with a logon box for username and password. Most routers have a label on them that states the default user and password. Most people keep the same user name and just change the password, while some routers only allow for password change with user name not able to be changed.

Knowing this username and password, you can then browse in the router log if its enabled and look at where people have gone maybe.

The other method of getting info is to have a 2nd computer on this shared network and have wireshark running and monitoring all network traffic. You can get tons of info through wireshark, especially if passwords and user names are unencrypted as CLEAR text. Some chat rooms use to show as clear text in which you could probe the network and watch what they are typing on the other computer to POST to the chat room etc. BUT Wireshark takes some getting use to. Its a powerful tool if you know how to use it, but if your not an IT guru, it can be a pain to learn to use and decifer a block of information that looks like this below:

%$ * J A
C K &^%
WENT &^
T o &@*!
*&TH*E#
%#ST*&
ORE&^%

In which the message of "JACK WENT To THE STORE" can be found in clear text unencrypted within the captured ascii data.Your help the last two days has been awesome; Thank you very much! I found the websites that he had been on and added them to a blocked list so he can't access them. Thankfully enough it hadn't been anything illegal, but I have had a few small viruses so we'll see if thosse blocks stops the viruses from coming.

Once again Dave it has been much appreciated.Glad to help.... curious as to which method worked for you to find the sites? If the limited account is setup properly he will no longer be able to erase your History...just his own.
I'd find a new roomate as he cannot show trust...that or lock your PC down appropiately.Probably the most dangerous thing this roommate could use to bypass anything blocking them on the local computer would be a Live Linux CD or DVD or USB Thumbdrive. Even if they didnt have the password to the computer, they could boot it up off the disc or USB device and bypass all software security settings and filters and be able to use the computer as well as have admin controls over the C: drive to sneak around and invade privacy etc, then when done they could pop their disc or USB device out and shut it down and pretend they never used it. Windows would have no trace that this had ever happened, unless the roommate dropped a file on desktop or got carried away and altered the system intentionally to change background if they knew the background was say Luckythedog.jpg and they replaced the image file with same file name in same location as the file used for background etc.

Physical access is a dangerous thing to anyone who knows security work arounds!

There is only one other way to lock this system down really well, but I am not going to suggest it, as for if done wrong the user could lock themselves out of their own computer and find it difficult to unlock it.

I'd hide the computer if you dont want them into it at all. But still interested in finding out which method worked for you to find their history of sites they went to.I managed to access the router and it seemed to have logging set up (probably when the router was set up) so I found what he had been on and gave him crap for it. Unfortunately this person had been a friend of mine for a while, so I thought I could trust him. After I had found out what he had been on I blocked his access to the computer completely (as he persisted to break my trust again and just find other sites). I'm not letting him on without me being around anymore, and not at all for a while.... the little pecker's grounded

ETA: The guy's worse with computers than me... I'm not worried about him "breaking in" LOL

Unless they figure out how to clear your router via the tiny reset button, it sounds like you have 1 up on them. I wouldnt disclose how you knew what sites they went to, or this person may try to flush out the router which also wipes out all settings back to default and also password back to default password which would make the router prime meat for a hacker to break into.

Solve : GOOGLE SEARCH?

Answer»

I use Google to search for a PARTICULAR item and then click on a selected item , I cannot then get back to the original search page using the back button (top left corner). The Google tab just stops working and get a blank screen - so have to start the search process all over again! No PROBLEMS using Google Chrome. Can anyone help?Which browser did you start with that has this issue?

There is a CODING trick to trap people into not being able to use the back button and I am thinking this might be the case here. Guessing its not all pages that have this issue but only specific ones.

Do you have a list of where to CHECK out to verify if your navigating to pages that use this code trick to keep you from going back from where you came from?

I'm thinking Google Chrome has protections against this navigation trap code trick and thats why you dont see it happening there. But we would need some URL PATHS to check out such as when your faced with this, copy/paste the URL path here for us to check out.Try Alt + back arrow...

Solve : Password Problesm on some sites.?

Answer»

For some time I have had trouble with passwords and I have thought it was alwasy my fault. Now I am starting to wonder if it is just me.

I like to use FireFox and I let it remember my passwords. But if I have not been toa site for a long time, like two months, the password may flop. Why?

And when I try to reset the password, it does not alwasy'take' the new password. Is THEER some kind of inherent trouble wtih password reset?

And why do some places ay you shoyuld change yur passwords often. Why?
Ddo they wear out?
Do they collect dust?
Does changingh a password make it better?
Why does it have to be so hard?
Example: Say I have a password like this:
dfX(jr37&^0
What are trhe odds of any bot ever guessing that? Now if I chang it to
fdX(jr37&0^
is taht somehow better?
I only transposde the first two and last two chars.
I think they call that jux·ta·po·si·tion.

This madness is driving me almost crazy.
Why can I not just keep my passwords forever?I feel the urge to get people to change passwords on a regular basis is mainly to keep changing it up in case its been compromised. If it was compromised somehow but not targeted yet, then it would be a time bomb. But if it changes on a regular basis, the window of opportunity for someone to do anything with it is limited.

In the corporate world passwords are changed regularly and there is a timer that after say 90 days you have to change it, and 14 day before it expires your warned to change it. They also require passwords to conform to a specific type of complexity to harden the network access.

On my home computer I have been using the same password for local system access for the last 8 years. There is no need to change that on a regular basis. I use complex passwords everywhere, but only change my banking and credit card access passwords and security questions on a quarterly basis. Additionally with security questions the answers I gave have absolutely nothing to do with the question choices such as if the choice is whats your favorite color I might use something like Neptune1984$ and your first car, I would use something like [emailprotected] this way common dictionary attacks wont work its too abstract to conform to any known list.

For websites that arent critical, I rarely if ever change my password and security info. If its compromised the worst they would be able to do is play my video game online and REMOVE items from the character etc.

As far as browser deleting passwords that are set to remember, i haven't run into that with Firefox yet. Do you think that you may have dumped your history and cookies etc during that time at all? Paypal for example I had not used for quite some time, and the other day I went to buy an item at amazon and it remembered me and I didnt have to logon to paypal, I was in and just needed to specify what account to pay from etc.

As far as if changing your password makes it better.... I would say it makes it better at keeping people out if they have access to your account and havent already acted on doing something bad. Their opportunity is gone unless they get the new password or know your security reset questions to gain access no matter what your password changes to. So they should really have to change security reset info too and have it to where you can specify the question and answer to eliminate dictionary attacks to try to gain access to peoples accounts or at least prompt people to change their security info regularly. BUT with this comes the risk of locking yourself out of an account and unable to prove your the owner losing access to it forever, so this info should be stored in a book in safe keep that no one has access to but yourself.

A password like dfX(jr37&^0 , someone would have to really want access to your account and I would think only if a keylogger or some other means of gaining access to your actual password would anyone or any automated authentication process be able to get in. You have 11 characters, and I would think that they would need to hit it with an alpha-numeric with special character counter that starts at say aaaaaaaaaaa and runs all the way to say ########### with every combination of upper and lower case and all that. With a properly configured authentication service I would think that hopefully they have a counter that after say 5 failed attempts it places the account access into a 15 minute time out process or longer to keep hackers from trying to brute force access through use of every combination until access is granted.

I am thinking your password to be guessed is around 11 to the power of 72 and it could take quite a while if the authentication is set up properly to lock out after x-many failed attempts.

On a project I was working on with 89 characters trying to find a value to which the input and output comes out the same, I ran it 1 Billion times on an 8-core 4.0Ghz AMD FX-8350 CPU which each of the 8 cores processing 125 Million attempts each to find where in a shuffle of 89 characters, where every shuffle is unique from the prior, searching for the iteration in which the end result ends up being the same as the initial input and it took 7 days and no match found. I deemed it not worth running this test further as for it would take a month to run 4 Billion attempts at finding this which I believe exists mathematically, but its out there somewhere and its not within the first Billion tries. And 48 Billion attempts could be achieved in a year with one system running non stop. The temptation is there to find this, but I dont want the electric bill that comes with finding that value. When running this search, I removed the gaming GTX video card and removed the HDD to run only on the SSD, so it was the bare minimum to run it and lowest power consumption state that I could get this system to without detracting from performance. *I suppose if I knew of a way to tap into the GPU for processing I could make more use of this system to test for more values in the same amount of time, but that is way beyond what I know in C++ programming. With the farming for coins etc using GPUs, I know it could be done, but I doubt it can be done easily to specify for it to be executed on the GPU and not the CPU.DaveLembke,
Thansk for the reply and detailed answer.
By the way, I can not get the spell cheker to work. So bear with me.

I think my problem is not with having a weak password. There seems to be some kind of problem with my connection, as if there is some kind of thing messing up my security. I did finally get into my WordPress account ansd then they tell me I don't have a web site. Hun? An I had to sgin in with my email, not my user name. strange. But for the reset I only gave the user name, not the e-mail. Something strange about how they handel a passwordn reset.

About passwords being hard to ctack. In theory, yes, you can make a tough password. In practice, it is never stronger than the weak link. The weak link is rvertything else. The people runnig aservice, the security certificates, the myriad hubs and switches taht router hyour trafic.

Let my clarify. Imagine a crime sydicate alled "Ruthless" and their business is to thwarrt Internet security for a profit.
"Ruthless" has found that to crack the password of one user might take maybe 1000 hours of brut force password attacks. OK. N ow they also find that a major servie can be ctracked in about 10,000 horce of inovative exploits. Just one good hit will get into the accounts of hundreds, even thusands of users. That fact that the user might have tough passwords does not matter. With the administer creditials "Ruthless" gets into every user that has some money. Yes, there might be a trail, but all that "Ruthless" wants is the money.
That above is fictional. But does it represent thebigger picture?
Look here:

For Baykan, passwords represent just a layer of security on the Internet, which is embedded with other security protocols that may also be compromised, as was the case with the Heartbleed bug. Alternate methods of authentication—such as using biometrics including fingerprint or retinal scanning—are available, but implementing them on a large scale would require a serious commitment by companies.
Put another way, you can not make it secure with passwords alone. The has to be a better way for all users to have private accese to valuable stuff on a remotre server. Acutjully, fignerprint technology has now come of age. Maye we will sign in with our thumbs.

True if they gain access into server side, they have "the keys for the kingdom" and even though each person has a DIFFERENT key some more complex to crack than others for their doors, the imitation king can just walk right on in and take everyones money.

This is one reason why I dont have all my eggs in one basket and dont have my computer save my passwords to my browser etc. I dont want automatic logon etc. Accounts with the highest risk for theft have the smallest amount of money in them. My ATM account for example never contains more than $500. My account I use for paypal I keep about $200 in it and as I spend on paypal I add more to bring it back to $200. I only put money out there in the high risk accounts that I could afford to lose, or temporarily lose without losing the roof over my head. I have money spread across multiple banks in secure accounts that if anything happened I wouldnt get cleaned out and I will still be able to pay my mortgage. They would have to target and gain access to 6 banks to clean me out. I'm not rich by any means but i have safety net accounts.

The other thing is that I dont have the web based access to these accounts. The banks are all super eager to give me it, but i tell them i dont want that access because if I need to know my balance I will just visit a bank. I dont like that with those accounts WIRE transfers can occur etc, and so someone could get onto an account and transfer money out of my account into theirs etc. There is ability to shut that feature off, but i just have it to where there is no web access to my accounts. Also for my ATM account I specified that I wanted a maximum withdraw from that account of $300 vs the $1000 they wanted to give me for my debt card that goes along with that account. I told the bank that if I need more than $300, I will visit the bank and take the money out or move money then to another account. I had to sign to a special document to have them set my account to a $300 limit for debt card transactions.

I know people who have gotten cleaned out and its not fun at all. It takes a while to get your money back and in some situations you dont. So I have it spread out among multiple banks as secure as I can have them.I do zero online banking...

When i do online purchases i EITHER get Gift Cards...or disposable credit cards from the bank.

Works for me.Quote from: patio on July 14, 2017, 09:41:22 AM
...
When i do online purchases i either get Gift Cards...or disposable credit cards from the bank.
Works for me.
That is what othes in my huse are now doing.
Even though these gift cards might have a 1 or 2 % fee, it can be worth the extra. Besides, the banks charges fees anyway unless you hava a$1000,000 in your account. It has been a long, long time ago when I once had that much money in one place. I think using different passwords on different sites is more important than changing an otherwise secure password. Occasionally websites get compromised and sometimes they are doing stupid things to deal with security- like having the password in plain text. And if the password isn't in plain text, having a database with user information and a hashed password can still be attacked a lot faster and easier than brute forcing a login page.

A Few times I've learned of data breaches largely because of unauthorized attempts to log in to some of my accounts. Pretty much anything- my main Microsoft Account, The root account on my VPS, etc. Which all failed because I tend to use different passwords. This happens because some random forum I used for 10 minutes 20 years ago was compromised, for example, and the attackers managed to get the password I used and then used my username to find other accounts to try that password on. That password was effectively random text, so it was a strong password, buit if I had continued to use that password, it would have been compromised.

For example I use different passwords for my VPS Root account, my blog's admin account, my Microsoft Account, this forum account, my bank website, paypal, ebay, and Amazon. I have them written down in a few places as well as set to remember in Firefox which seems to have worked so far for me.

One interesting thing is that I can search through the logs of my blog's login and find attempts to login to my BC_Programming account and will occasionally find a password I've used elsewhere- I can look up where I used it and see exactly who has been compromised. I've done something sort of similar to determine of sites that say "We'll never share your E-mail address" do. For example, TIBCO Jaspersoft is the only thing I used my work E-mail for, and somehow now it is receiving spam messages.

I mainly use IE 11 as my browser, do to familiarity. In the past few days a new strange thing has been happening when I left click on the far right TAB BOX. I know I PROBABLY hit something is some setup mode to CAUSE this, but I can't find what I did to make the little problem GO away.

Can anyone tell me how to restore the ORIGINAL function that allows opening a new TAB to be an empty TAB?See Here...

Same for IE 11 BTW...Thank you PATIO. That fixed the problem. Regards, Art.Excellent...good to seeya again BTW...Good to hear you figured it out. On FF, I set the home page to about:blank, sometimes there are sites that automatically change that setting without warning.

Solve : Ad Blockers - A Force for Good??

Answer»

Hey everyone, I've been thinking about this lately and just wanted to throw the question out there. What is your stance on ad blockers? I've used Adblock Plus for some time now, and it works really well for my browsing experience - far fewer annoying popups, banners, and so on. It's great for avoiding ads before YouTube videos as well. Thing is, so many smaller website rely on their ad revenue to keep running, so I find myself questioning just how reasonable it really is to use it.

So, the question is, do you use an ad blocker yourself? Do you think it's sustainable for so many people to keep using them, or should we put up with irritating ADVERTS to support those websites that actually need the revenue? I use badadjohnny. I just whitelist the websites that I believe need the revenue from the ads. For the rest of the websites, I just block all the annoying popups and ads. If I didn't then I would be continuously annoyed by the amount of popups a.Whitelisting individual websites seems a very good way to go, but do you think most ad blocker users actively do that? Just thinking from the perspective of a website owner - you can't guarantee that people will be responsible with how they use ad blockers. Then again, perhaps it's down to advertisers to change their practices and MAKE theirs ads generally less obtrusive and irritating. Not to mention the privacy element, with so many trackers out there...

As you say, web browsing is a far less irritating experience when you use an ad blocker. Because for websites at the moment it basically seems to be a choice between asking visitors to turn off their ad blocker and outright banning them from entry, like it explains in this article: https://www.1and1.co.uk/digitalguide/websites/web-design/adblockers-impact-on-web-development/

For a burgeoning website struggling to cover its costs, this risks losing a fair amount of traffic from people who simply refuse to do so. It's a tricky one - the internet needs advertising in a certain sense, but it can also dilute the experience! This is all based on empathy for people who make money from ads ? ?

Or have a poor business model to begin with ?

I don't get it.There is a concept that there is an implicit moral contract whereby if a site has ads, then you must view those ads to view the website. There is a certain logic to the idea. But as far as product is concerned, I don't think it holds up. The basic idea is that if you consume what they are providing, you must also consume some advertisements that the content provider places on the site.

Let's see how logical and reasonable that concept works when applied to, say, produce.

Suddenly, No company charges for the STRAWBERRIES, but some strawberry distributors have contracts with Dried Goat Turds Inc., and when they sell you strawberries, they will also include a selection of random dried goat turds, and they get paid based on how many of these dried goat turds you eat.

Like a good customer you are expected to finish all your goat turds. Nobody ever wants to eat goat turds. They taste like, well, goat turds. Sometimes, goat turds make you sick. Too bad. That's the price you pay for strawberries.

Blocking ads is like ignoring and not eating these goat turds, and only eating the strawberries. People see you have a goat turd filter, and call you a strawberry thief.

But in such a world- is it immoral to not eat goat turds? I say no; I say that if a company provides you with a bundled product, free or otherwise, you are perfectly free to pick and choose what components you want to accept and consume, regardless of their business dealings. Nobody gets bent out of shape when somebody picks off the pineapple from a Hawaiian, going on about implicit social contracts, but picking out the goat turds from the web content you access is some sort of immoral act by evil content thieves.

I say what we are seeing with adblock is in some sense analogous to the change in business model that the record industry was forced kicking and screaming into the digital age. websites, STILL adhering to the idea that they can make money for ads, throw up full-page banners, make contracts with shady advertising companies who track users across the web. So users block it. Then they throw a fit and start detecting ad blockers and throwing up pathetic "Plz disable ads" banners or even prevent you from visiting the site altogether. Eventually, it's going to become clear that Merely delivering web content through HTTP is not a business model, and needs to be part of something larger to contribute to one.I spent 1 1/2 hours working on eliminating the 2nd generation ads...IE: those sites that state "please dis-able your ad-blocker" to view content...
This infuriates me even more than the Ads do...

Happy to report it's been about 75% successful...so i have more work to do.

Info Page...you are right it's annoying when they don't let you view content unless you disable adblocker but some websites like novel translators website runs on donations and revenues from ads. So I think websites like those need to be whitelisted if you are not donatingDoes anybody remember when cabled TV first stated years ago?

This is honestly why I'm worried about the Future of Netflix like services. Eventually someone is going to come along and say "Hey Netflix i know you are making tons of money but add this very non intrusive ad and you can make more money!" My only hope is they think "No thank you our viewers don't like ads" Rather then "Oh well if its non intrusive then sure!"Netflix would not let a chance to make more money go. They most probably will allow such ''NON-intrusive" Adds on their videos.Quote from: Lorraine walsh on February 21, 2017, 11:53:04 PM

On one hand i definitely agree because Netflix likes money and I can see them justifying it many ways. On the other hand they have to know that if they have ads people will stop subscribing.. And if they were to Include Ads why not have them already? I'm sure with its popularity they aren't short on offers.Netflix makes its own shows now. Their popularity is ever increasing. they will not start suddenly in my opinion. They will do this slowly over time. They will start by doing adding just one at the start and then add more in future. They know people wont leave as their shows have a loyal fanbaseQuote
So, the question is, do you use an ad blocker yourself? Do you think it's sustainable for so many people to keep using them, or should we put up with irritating adverts to support those websites that actually need the revenue?

I use adblocker for firefox, but sometimes turn it off. Some sites will pop up stating you cant use their site unless its disabled.

I feel that the majority of people I know who browse the internet dont use adblockers and so there is still a good amount of people visiting the sites.

In all the ads I have watched online. None have made me want to buy something when visiting a website and the advertising before the streaming video etc. Pretty much when I make purchases online, I am there because I intend to buy something. Such as at newegg to see what they have in their bargain bin on discount or clearance or steam for a new game on the cheap that is on sale.

If I am to watch a music video or streaming show, the ads never apply to me. Even when some have interactive ads where they ask which you'd rather see its just wasted time for me to have to go through the process. I suppose some materialistic people might see some new SUV or easy clean vegetable chopper or axe body wash etc and think that they need to have that product. as far as products go i stick with the same consumables I have for years. Only if there is a really good coupon would I ever change from say Tide detergent etc. And coupons dont pop up for printing in these ads.

If they wanted to get me to take ads more seriously, they should have some sort of benefit for me to waste 20 seconds of my life watching it or instead of random ads that 99.9% of them never apply to me have a way to register for ad content that I wouldnt mind watching... for example if the ad has humor to it, I like those. I probably would never buy the product but at least the 20 seconds was entertaining and I got a laugh about it. Some examples of commercials I enjoyed was the one where muscle relaxant gets accidentally dumped into a vat of gatorade and foot ball players are totally wasted on the football field and the entire crowd is quiet like in shock at whats happening yet one guy jumps up screaming WoooHOOOOOOOOO... he won on a lottery ticket and that was the whole point of the commercial.... others I liked was the Hertz Rental Car company showing ideas to improve rental car service and a jet pack to get them to the rental car faster is proposed. In the next scene a guy in a jet pack shot up into power lines and BOOM. Then they are like yeah thats not such a good idea as well as the aroma therapy candles lit in the back sill of the rental car and a bunch of executives were so calmed by the aroma therapy that the car is drifting off the road with them asleep crossing into oncoming traffic. As well as the Trunk Monkey commercials that when this guy has a problem he pops the trunk release and a monkey jumps out with a tire iron to deal with the problem and then high 5 and the monkey goes back into the trunk for another commercial which I forgot what they were selling. Captain Obvious is not bad in latest ads with him. Some of the DOS EQUIS Guy commercials were good too... sadly the guy retired.. "Stay Thirsty My Friends"... and while I do like to drink on occasion, I dont care for DOS XX Beer.

I didn't say that i will share something that will make change to the registry, i just say to query this means read only without changing anything, so it is safe.
but anyway if the OP doesn't want it, i will not share it !
So, you can mark it as solved since the OP asked you that it is solved by him self

Solve : Microsoft Edge?

Answer»

On my laptop which has Windows 10, Microsoft Edge will not open at all. Can someone TELL me what to do please?
JudyFriend of mine had same issue. He used a restore point to get edge to work again. Somehow it got corrupted. On another friends system where edge stopped working Firefox was placed onto a thumb drive and INSTALLED as a browser replacement in which they then were able to download malwarebytes and remove infection that killed edge. So these are 2 methods. 3rd method would be get all your data off of the computer and then perform CLEAN install from recovery media. Thanks DAVE. Malwarebytes and rebooting helped me re-establish Microsoft Edge. Don't know why I didn't think of it myself!

Solve : Chrome+Opera?

Started working with Windows and discovered that I cannot open Opera and Chrome at the same time. They both start working slowly or even stop LOADING pages.
Does it mean they are not compatible? Have you ever had such a problem and did you get any solutions?Possibly both Chrome and Opera are STRESSING some resource that is not stable under load such as buggy graphics drivers, faulty memory, HDD problems, CPU overheating. What happens if you subsitute Firefox for each in turn?
Tried. Firefox makes loading even SLOWER in both cases And, you're using an Apple machine, RIGHT? Your profile SHOWS "Mac OS".

Solve : Chrome displays black (nt blank) pages?

Answer»

Yesterday, I started having trouble with Chrome on my Windows 10 MACHINE. When I BROUGHT it up, all the pages were totally black--not blank, but black. I completely uninstalled and reinstalled Chrome. After the reinstallation, Chrome worked properly (NORMAL pages). This morning, though, when I brought Chrome up, the pages were solid black again. What's wrong, and how do I fix it?

Thanks. Is it only Chrome...or all browsers ? ?Only Chrome--Firefox, Edge and Avast SafZone browsers are working fine. Only Chrome has this problemIt appears that my problem was a fluke; I tried running Chrome the next morning and got the same problem, but I RAN Chrome that afternoon and it ran normally. I guess this closes out my problem.I have the same problem with my Chrome too. I cannot define what it depends on. Weather or what... It loads the page, I click several times and everything turns black. After several clicks it REAPPEARS for a second again and goes black. I'm afraid something is wrong with my computer, not Chrome itself...It is fixed with the latest Chrome update...it ain't the PC...

Solve : how do you get around that stupid "adFly"??

Answer»

there's a website I frequent that tries to FORCE VISITORS to disable their adblocker and have arranged it so that you can't get content unless you disable your adblock but then when you click links you get stuck wasting 10 second each time for this stupid "adfly"crap I found a way around it and spread the word but then the PEOPLE that ran the site changed it so my way to get around it no longer works. *sigh* I had basically just copy the adfly link and had a URL extend website reveal the direct link to bypass the stupid adfly but now when you copy the link it won't reveal the direct link any more, just another adfly link. I tried an add-on that says it would block adfly but it doesn't work. at first it worked perfectly but after a couple hours it stopped working. I have Chrome browser and Firefox too. is there any way to skip wasting time to wait for countdown and just go directly to the link, avoiding adfly?I have done tricks to block them in addition to the adblocker for Firefox. I have had some sites detect my adblock and completely refuse to show the video etc. OTHERS there is a black screen for how long the ad would be running for and then the video plays. I too tried to blacklist URLs as a means to block ads and they got smart using dynamic links that continually change and so the blacklist method doesnt work anymore for me.

My one friend is recording shows online that have COMMERCIALS associated with them and if its an hour show etc, walk away for an hour and come back later and play the video capture and he can fast forward over commercials this way same as a DVR for Cable TV etc. It doesnt eliminate the commercials, but the ones that last longer than 10 seconds, he can just look at the time stamp and move the slider 10, 20, 30, or 45 seconds forward to skip over time wasting commericals and it only took 2 seconds to move the slider.

I don't use it for skipping commercials. I usually torrent shows I watch and they don't have commercials when you download them. the adfly nonsense was related to web sites for app games. not sure what is going on with my computer but the adfly skipping thing is working again all by itself.

Solve : Trying to find Google Chrome plugin for Gmail?

Answer»

There’s a plugin for Google Chrome called Boomerang for Gmail, I’ve been using their email scheduler, very handy FEATURE. But since it’s a paid option, i’m not ready to pay for this, I’m working in a non-profit organization. I’ve been trying to find an extension with similar features for FREE, but in each one there’s a limit to scheduled emails in a free version. Is there a free ALTERNATIVE? Thank you in advance. As far as I know Google has a tight hold on their browser with plugins that they offer. $4.99 a month isn't that bad and you should be able to write this off through the non-profit. Additionally many companies out there you can contact requesting if they will grant a license for a non-profit for free. If they accept they will be requesting that you share with them details as to what your non-profit identity is and a formal request to use their product for free. Then they will either grant you a free license/subscription or they will decline.

I worked for a Not-For-Profit in the past, and Adobe for example can be contacted and you can be granted FREE licensing of their products. But they require extensive paperwork and a formal request. They dont just hand out free keys and subscriptions, but if you can prove that your a real Not-For-Profit or Non-Profit identity, they may grant free use of their product(s). It was considered a non-profit charity license that I was able to get for the Not-For-Profit identity.

Additionally, I paid out of my own pocket for software that made my job easier at times. One of which was a one time $79.99 fee, but by which i still have use of today if I ever needed to use it and I just considered it no different than buying a tool for $79.99 to do my job easier.

It LOOKS like you can save money buying 1 year at a time vs MONTHLY. However you could always contact them and see if they offer charity licensing for non-profit. Then be prepared to prove that your a non-profit and answer any and all requests they have including proof of your licensed non-profit identity. With Adobe I got approval and granted the charity licensing the same day that I faxed the info they requested. I havent worked with Google or owner of Boomerang to know if they offer this charity licensing/subscription for non-profit but it wouldn't hurt to ask. It is free to use Boomerang, up to 10 messages per month. For info on Boomerang for Gmail Plans and Pricing, see http://www.boomeranggmail.com/subscriptions.htmlHi. If you need to schedule a lot of emails, check out Chrome extension Deskun, there's a free unlimited feature.

Solve : ONLY facebook loading slow?

Answer»

Good evenin guys LONG time no see !

as my title says, its been like FOREVER but i never really NOTICED it. only facebook LOADS SUPERslow ...like 15 seconds for top row then stops loading the 'feed' & chat section

Here's a Sshot

I tried Chrome, Opera & IE & i primarily use firefox with youtube video download & adblocker addon

Internet speed is 1Mbps , other sites work wellAs far as Facebook goes and that small bandwidth, I would go into Facebook preference settings and tell it NOT to autoload videos/media. A while back Facebook redesigned their site to where you can scroll down and videos play etc. You will want it set to only playing a video when you select to play it. When they rolled this out it was a royal annoyance. I had plenty of bandwidth so that the page loaded at an ok speed, but i didnt want videos to autoplay when scrolling down. I'd check to see if maybe the videos/media are eating up your bandwidth on page load that is causing for it to lag out. If this is the cause you should be able to easily fix this in preferences and have Facebook load faster.

Additionally on a recent thread I had going here I noticed that Facebook and Youtube have been laggy lately and I found out that Flash is Single-Threaded which I was not aware of it how it executes on CPU. If you have a weak CPU system you could also be dealing with the fact that Flash is single-threaded and SLOW on a weaker CPU system. My system that showed it the worst was a Netbook with Intel Atom N280 1.66Ghz. I thought my system had an issue because Facebook and Youtube were slow and laggy and my CPU was only using 40-50% CPU utilization. The 40-50% was because the CPU has HT and so while it showed 2 cores, it only had 1 true core and 1 virtual core and so only the true core was in use at 90-100% so the hardware monitor was lying to me about the CPU use.On top of the above is the fact FaceBook servers have crashed 4 or 5 times in the last 3 weeks...Quote from: DaveLembke on October 03, 2015, 06:53:55 AM

I have a gaming PC , so no issues on raw power
btw WOW, even i didnt knew that..i'll research a bit on flash
I'll do the preference thing & report back !

Maybe it is because of the Internet not because of FB. When go to this page, it works good.

Now My question is that is it possible on any browser to to keep cookies on the same site? I mean as long as I am on a certain site, it should keep cookies on that? I hope my question is understandable because I don't exactly know how to phrase it otherwise...

Are you saying ... the website your connected to, for them to store the cookies on their server vs your computer?

( Cookies are for storing information locally at your computer so that when you go back thereto their site your browser will use them if available to usually benefit the user from not having to enter in say location or address or other stuff. Cookies can be used incorrectly as well which is why they have a bad name for themselves when a website is coded to use them in a way that is to farm information from you etc and invasion of privacy etc. )

If you really want a system that you can get online and have it dump all history and cookies etc, I would suggest running a Linux Live environment such as Knoppix where computer boots from a CD or DVD DISC and the OS is read-only on that disc. When teh system boots off that disc and runs its all running in RAM and reads form the CD-R or DVD-R disc when files are needed but never saves the data to disc. So when you shut down all data is gone. You boot the computer back up and its clean again like new, and it has no clue who you are and all cookies and history is gone on reboot.I wouldn't say it's "Good Practice" to delete cookies at all. Websites put them there for a reason and expect them to be there when you visit the site in the future. All you get by deleting cookies is a more frustrating experience by having to log into every website every time you open your browser and having no preferences saved between SESSION.

If you don't want cookies to be saved on a specific website (which I have to do regularly for testing sites) then you're best to use your browser's "Incognito" or "Private Browsing" mode as this won't save cookies. The age old myth that cookies can be harmful is total bunk now...for everyday users they don't need to be touched...Thanks for the clarification about cookies. But I have read on many sites like arstechnica that cookies can invade my privacy which is why I started deleting them. I want those cookies to be stay on my computer as long as I am on the site then it should be removed to invade my privacy? Cookies are used to store session data when you leave a site so it can be restored when you return.

If you stay on a site, that information is part of the session and not a cookie.

Quote
I have read on many sites like arstechnica that cookies can invade my privacy
A garden hose can be used for a surprise colonoscopy but that is no reason not to have a garden hose.

The idea that cookies can invade privacy is a silly one, not because it's entirely untrue but because it is such a minor thing compared to the more prevalent methods. Advertisers do track users across websites but they don't do it by using cookies, they do it by saving that information in their database. Things like Google analytics or Google adsense for example are on so many websites that it can basically track you across the web. It can see you on "BobsFarmingBlog.com" and "PaulsTractorCorp.net" and similar related sites and save that information on a server side database, then classify that you might be interested in a new tractor and show you ads for tractors and farm equipment. This behaviour is not related to cookies.

Some of these advertising widgets/components do save cookies. For what purpose, I don't know, since they can't really get more information from you with them. You can block third-party cookies pretty easily though with most web browsers- for example on BobsFarmingBlog.com, BobsFarmingBlog.com can save cookies, but ads.google.com cannot. ads.google.com will still save your IP address and what website you are viewing and your browser fingerprint into it's massive database, but hey at least you won't have a scary textfile connected to your browser.

Solve : Firefox is ending support for Windows XP and Vista?

Answer»

This was announced earlier this year by Mozilla, the makers of Firefox.
Starting now there is an extended sport.
From another source comes this:
https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/03/final-firefox-version-with-windows-xp-plugin-support-released-today/
Quote

Firefox 52 is out today, and it's a landmark release for a couple of reasons.

The release is the final major version to support two legacy operating systems: Windows XP and Windows Vista. Future major versions of the browser will require at a minimum Windows 7. Firefox 52 is an Extended Support Release; it will receive security fixes (and only security fixes) for approximately one year. New features, however, will be restricted to the mainline version of Firefox. Microsoft no longer supports Windows XP at all, and Windows Vista drops out of extended support on April 11, 2017. Google dropped Windows XP and Windows Vista support in Chrome in April 2016.
I am not going the let them make me cry. I used firefox for about a year after SWITCHING from chrome. I started having memory leaks, which was resolved by switching BACK to Chrome. I still use firefox at work since I don't seem to have the issue. Don't cry, I'm sure there are other browser out there that you might like Much ADO about nothing...
The latest ver of Firefox runs fine on my XP rig...
If it ever gets wonky there are YEARS and years of older builds out there that i'm sure will run fine...

Solve : Can I make a webpage AUTOMATICALLY "LOAD MORE" content on Chrome??

Answer»

Let's take for example this Comedy Central, Colbert Report page : http://www.cc.com/shows/the-colbert-report/video-guide
THEN click on ALL VIDEOS and SEASON 3.
You might notice that this page has 874 videos on it, and the first one is BASICALLY the last in chronological order, so i want to start by the last one to catch up normally... BUT only 14 links are displayed first, and i have to click on the LOAD MORE button to make 14 more appear... SO technically, each time i will want to log in on this page, i will have to click around 62 times on the LOAD MORE button to GO back to where i'm at...
So my question is : is there a way to make this page display all the links automatically without using the LOAD MORE button?

By the way i used to use the episode section which displayed 160 links instead of 874, but for some reason it has been down for a few DAYS displaying a copyright related message so basically my only option to watch old colbert report episodes is this one, unless someone KNOWS a better easier way.

Thank you

I am trying to REARRANGE bookmark folders in IE 11 with Windows 10 to suit my preferences. I am familiar with "Organize Favorites" and dragging either WHOLE folders or individual BOOKMARKS to a different location.

When I MOVE a folder, it does not always stay put. Sometimes, after a few seconds, it goes BACK to the original location.

Can you offer any suggestions how to resolve?

Thank you.

Solve : Add more search engines for Firefox?

Answer»

Firefox has s nice little box where yu can change the search ENGINE for a search.
Sometimes I don't want to search in GOOGLE. I want some links that are not biased by Google ADS. But even so, I still like Google most of the time.
Len's say you wound rather search using Bing instead of Google, but keep Google as the default. Ever wanted to do that quick and easy?
Here is the LIST for Firefox:
Add or remove a search engine in Firefox

You ALREADY know that? OK, I have a question for you.
How could I do that in Chrome? Or Internet Explorer?
Possible?
For Chrome you can hit the 3 dots in the top right. Click setting. Then scroll down the the search section. There is some pre-defined search engines but also a manage search engines box.For Internet Explorer you can go into internet options, general tab, search, then hit on the bottom find more search providers.Ah but now we run in to you wanting to keep google as your default! Ack lets research together.I did some research and check this bad boy out. First you want to hit the 3 dots in the top right. Click setting. Then scroll down the the search section. There is some pre-defined search engines but also a manage search engines box, now you can click on that middle section and set a key word. For example i set the bing.com middle section to "bng" now when you want to search bing just type in the address bar "bng " For example. if i wanted to search bing for cat videos in the tool bar id type in "bgn super cute cat video"Well, after all that, I just may stick with Firefox. The Fox gives me a quick and easy way to choose. Look here at this screenshot:

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]This method is arguably easier and better for if it wanted to add some abstract search engine. For example i have soundcloud to come up when i type SC then search. SEE SCREENSHOT BELOW

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Perhaps it is unorthodox, but if you want to search with say bing instead of google you could go to bing.com.While i think that the concept behind your idea is good, i dont think its too user friendly. ! Just kidding of course. Im just trying to provide a good solution for the question asked. Plus i think this is a pretty neat way to search those odd sites. I can go from youtube to searching for a friend on facebook then from my facebook friends profile back to a specific youtube page in a short amount of time. Kind of neat actually.Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 22, 2017, 04:53:07 PM

They may not ever get this concept.... Quote from: patio on February 22, 2017, 05:28:01 PM

Haha sick burn man. One day ill be as sly as you are...
Obviously there is already known ways, why not try to find different way though? Wheres the downside in that?I like things that reduce key strokes. I don't want to wear out my keyboard.

Solve : win 7 with chrome, cannot scroll, help.?

Answer»

The problem is intermittent, one day fine, then suddenly no scroll, after an hour or so, o/k again , tried, c clean, reboot, reloading chrome, and any trick I could think of , all to no avail :(any suggestions will be appreciated. Can you try another web browser and see whether you have the same problem with it? And, what about other apps, such as word processing or spreadsheet or viewing a PDF DOCUMENT in a PDF reader? Do you have this scroll problem with them? Today scrolling is o/k , when it does pack up it is on everything, including explorer, I have complained to chrome, will wait and see what happens. Sounds like a connection issue...Ok all morning , then it suddenly stopped scrolling, I disabled ad block, no joy, suddenly after 5 MINUTES it started working again. driving me bonkers Have you checked your connection speeds yet ? ?...SpeedTest.net.
I have SOLVED the problem, I WENT into chrome's history and deleted, not just a day or WEEK, but for all time, that was over a week ago and the scrolling has been perfect since. Hope this will help someone else.

Answer»

Hi guys, I just installed from their site the latest version of FIREFOX on my notebook. Its working just fine. The weird thing is that the installation, as FAR as I could SEARCH, did not show a PROFILE, nor a default title. Any ideas why this happened and is it good or bad? Like I said its working so far. BTW, the search included the Appdata\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profile, where its usually found.Do you mean you updated...or did a clean install of FireFox ? ?

Solve : Unable to open 1 specific website?

Answer»

Hello,

Thanks for this forum!

I have an unusual issue that started happening on 1/02/2017. A website that I use often (www.appraisersforum.com) STOPPED working for me. Every other website I use pulls up fine, except this one. This happens with every device in our home, using a wireless router. This website tries to open, then times out. I have posted the results below. I have Googled the problem and have read from several websites that there might be a DNS problem, but with my limited computer skills, I'm reluctant to CHANGE my DNS settings without knowing that this is the problem. Also, I have VERIFIED with the websites owner that I have not been "blocked" and that the website is working fine. Does this issue sound familiar? Any suggestions or assistance would be appreciated! Thanks.

This page can’t be displayed
Turn on TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2 in Advanced settings and try connecting to https://appraisersforum.com again. If this error persists, it is possible that this site uses an unsupported protocol or cipher suite such as RC4 (link for the details), which is not considered secure. Please CONTACT your site administrator.

(btw, the TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2 in Advanced settings are checked!)

Website seems to work OK to get to that page from here so site is likely ok.

Id take one of the devices that is portable to another internet connection such as at a friends house or open wifi somewhere and see if you get same results or if it then works fine on someone elses network.

Solve : Script debugging?

Uhm I'd rather stay where I am, as I am in a competition, and it might mess things up if I go to it elsewhere (hope you dont mind) - will keep on with Google Chrome for the moment.

I had wsritten this on message 4, but no-one has answered - I know it's a different question but .....

While I am here, can you tell me what all these FILES means in Local Disk (C:) - should they be hidden, have I not turned something off - can I delete them - what are they?

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Guess you might as well dump my thread as I don't think anyone can help.

Thanks for previous ADVICE though.Fingers crossed, so FAR so good with Google Chrome - I'll be back if it plays up again.

Adobe has crashed a few times tho - wonder why? When you say Adobe, I presume you're talking about Adobe Flash PLAYER, since that is the Adobe browser plug-in needed to view a lot of streaming video content on the web. What makes you think Adobe Flash Player crashed? I do have Adobe Flash Player 24 NPAPI, but that is what came up when I was trying to read a PDF file (Adobe Acrobat REader DC).

Solve : IE8 is back from the dead.?

Answer»

I have one web design application tool that has to use IE (Internet Explore.) I don't use it very often and it is a free application, so I do not expect HELP from the author.. But when I need that design program , I need it on a big way. So I use IE 7 or 8 and open the trusty old web design tool in XP. Works good.
But I find that later versions of IE do not have anything that enriches the application. In fact they just take more memory.
One the web somebody posted the tile of this post a year ago. He says that with some many people still using the older browser, there is little need for such users to use anything above IE version 8. Or even version 7.
http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/2016/01/ie8-is-back-from-the-dead/
Quote

According to caniuse.com the most up to date stats for the browsers Microsoft is disowning are: IE10, 0.87% global usage; IE9, 0.91% global usage; IE8 1.18% global usage; IE7, 0.05% global usage. Surprisingly, that credits IE8 with more users than the TWO subsequent versions.
So, my question is: Why does MS keep bringing out new versions of its browser?
You could ask the same question about any browser, Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari, etc. They all release updates and the updates are rather frequent. Why do they do this? Well, improved security is certainly one reason, one which should all be mindful of. Performance enhancements are often mentioned by the browser makers as a reason. Another reason is compliance with changing web development standards.

So, I have to take issue with your comment that "there is little need for such users to use anything above IE version 8. Or even version 7." By the way, the title of the article, which you used as the title of this forum discussion, is misleading. The author is basically saying some internet users are still using very old versions of browsers, not that those old versions are actually coming back. Older versions of Web Browsers, and especially IE since it is the Windows Default, can be security risks to use, as their vulnerabilities can allow things like drive-by downloads or even software installation.

Quote
But I find that later versions of IE do not have anything that enriches the application. In fact they just take more memory.

IE9 is also demonstrably faster than IE8 and as Soybean mentioned, later versions adapt to changing web standards; Exactly the same as the difference between IE6 and IE7, really.

Memory use of otherwise equivalent applications goes up because there is more memory in general on typical PCs as time progresses, and that gets used for a variety of purposes within the program. Realistically, most of the memory used by a browser is used by the web pages it presents, through Javascript and other client side features, so as new Web standards and supported features are available, memory use increases. Thanks you both. Yes, you arguments are good. Yet I still think frequent updating is a waste of time. Updates should be less often.
A curious thing: Chrome is way ahead. Why?
Never mind, I will not use Chrome.

I'd argue that Being easily infected by merely visiting a website and having to reinstall Windows would be a bigger waste of time then the occasional updates to Internet Explorer.

between IE7, 8, 9, and 10 you're looking at one or two years between those versions.

They did the whole "don't update it very often" thing with IE6, which stuck around for years. And IE is the *censored*-monkey of browser jokes largely because of that.Browsers update so often since the standards and technologies in use on websites is also rapidly changing. For example, IE8 doesn't even support most of HTML5 which is effectively standard nowadays. IE versions less than 10 don't support WebSockets which are also critical for many modern applications. Sure, if you're just browsing pages of text, an old browser will probably work (ignoring the glaring security flaws) but if you are doing anything that involves modern websites containing large amounts of FRONTEND media and/or script elements then more often than not an old browser will not work correctly.

The security aspect of browsers is also critical - When you visit a website you are effectively running untrusted code on your machine - Browsers implement pretty solid sandboxing to prevent this being able to perform malicious actions however flaws are always being detected an patched. It's also now getting to the stage that old browsers don't support the same SSL encryption standards that are now seen as the "best practice" - I'm not going to tweak the SSL settings on my WEBSERVER, decreasing security as a result simply to support people who refuse to use a modern browser.

If I'm building a website, in order to support old browsers I would effectively need to build half of the functionality twice - For example I'd have to use WebSockets for people using modern browsers then implement some sort of legacy AJAX polling nonsense to keep people on old browsers happy. I'm simply not going to bother spending the time to do this - Unless there is an urgent reason/request to support legacy stuff for a specific project, I'll only focus on supporting recent versions of major browsers. For me, it's simply not worth the effort, I'd rather spend the time implementing more advanced functionality rather than spending time surrounded by various machines running old browsers trying desperately to get a project to work correctly under a 7 year old browser.

Nowadays browsers such as Chrome and Firefox automatically update in the background extremely regularly to ensure they always support the latest web standards and contain the latest security updates. I honestly couldn't tell you what version of Chrome I'm CURRENTLY running without checking (55.0.2883.87 m - Just checked). The update process is completely transparent and never stops me from doing anything so I can't really see a problem with this.

Solve : Very simple script/automation process on a webpage?

Answer»

Hello there good people,

SITUATIONI am a foreigner living in France and in order to be able to drive car here, I must register on a governmental website and find a suitable date for an appointment. BUREAUCRACY. Meh. The bad thing is, availability is extremely scarce and the only thing I've had for the moment is disappointment...

PROBLEM
An employee told me they PUT new available time slots online every Sunday at 11:59 PM, some sort of a weekly renewal if you like. I have tried from 11:30 PM to 02:20 AM, filling the same form over and over and over, for 8 weeks but nothing ever happened I am feeling really confused and a bit angry.

SOLUTION ?I am asking for your help in the making of an automated process (OSX based, ideally, but Windows works)

STEP 1 : clicking in a checkbox ('I agree' type of thing), http://www.rhone.gouv.fr/booking/create/20139/0

STEP 2 : clicking 'next',
and

STEP 3-a : if the next webpage to show up is the error webpage http://www.rhone.gouv.fr/booking/create/20139/2 > back to STEP 1, in a loop.

STEP 3-b : if the next webpage to show up is the right webpage http://www.rhone.gouv.fr/booking/create/20139/1 > PLAYING a super crazy loud alert sound on computer (+ sending an email, an SMS, whatever will do. This is optional but would be so cool).

ADDITIONAL NOTE

  • The server doesn't look rock-solid and I've had quite a few "Error 502 : bad gateway" blank screens, as well as another "Error 503 guru meditation" message. The script should know how to "react" in such cases.
  • A log file would be absolutely great (see 'GOOD TO KNOW'). Date + Time + Attempt nbr X for instance.

I've found a few automation processes online, but they don't seem to fit in this particular scenario :s

Be free, be wild, think outside the box, brainstorm this baby!
Thank you so much in advance

GOOD TO KNOW
I might need a log file in order to prove that the administration is actually not putting new time slots. It may very well help my case… I'm starting to find a solution here... but the battle isn't over yet
Any help is welcome!

http://forum.imacros.net/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=27092&p=72328#p72323For automation like that I use JitBit Macro Recorder. You Click to start recording what you are doing, fill out the form completely the first time and when done click end recording. You then can compile it as an EXE and call to it in a scheduled task. As long as the pages load without any problems and the layout doesnt change at the website then it will submit an additional form to them with your info. Only thing though is that through this it sounds like you might have to select a time slot that works for you, so it might not be able to be automated. Automation works best when your working with a fixed pattern and locations on the screen to clock and select and enter information in. However automation gets overly complicated if you need it to make decisions based on what if on the screen. I only use automation when the routine is completely redundant such as some online games that require you to do something at timed intervals. Because the way the game or website is doesnt change you can automated it, but if your up against having to make selections based on an unpredictable dynamic response from the website, that is where it gets far more complicated than just a macro by itself.

Do you need to select a time slot from a list of available time slots? Additionally there might be an anti formspam feature at this site in which only one request can be made per timed interval per account as a means to keep people from hitting the server over and over again quickly similar to blocks that radio stations have on people using dialer tools to try to be the 3rd CALLER at a radio station to win stuff.Quick sanity check... my phrase of the moment... do we really do that? I mean helping script a bot to hit up a government site? I can imagine what the mods at Autoit forum would say (take a week's ban while you think about what you were asking).

How to reduce or control somehow ram usage in chrome ? Is there any option ?
Yes, Firefox.

Seriously, my experience the two browsers indicates Firefox to be much better in this regard. I have Firefox open on my Lenovo desktop PC with 93 tabs open and, if I open Task MANAGER and pause a few seconds, CPU usage will drop below 10%, with Firefox tending to account for about half of that usage. Of course, this varies depending on what websites are open. Some websites are bloated with code, likely some poorly optimized code, and can consume an inordinate amount of CPU and browser tasking.

I do use Chrome on my Android tablet and smartphone since it is the default browser that came on them. It seems to work fine on them but I NEVER have anywhere near 90+ tabs open on those devices. The last version of Chrome lasted less than 2 days on my PC...

There are alternatives as mentioned...I am using both chrome and firefox and so far i like firefox more but still WOULD like to see if anything can be done for that chrome Not til they fix it...No...

Solve : Bogus browsing history in Chrome?

Answer»

I use Chrome in Windows 64 bit Vista. The following happens way too often... I am in say Yahoo, left click an article, read it, then hold down my left mouse button on my "go back" button and find up to 20! browser history links that intend to keep me from going back to Yahoo in 1 click. So, how do I prevent these bogus, redundant history links?Use Alt + back arrow... Quote from: asdfghj on December 12, 2016, 04:43:41 PM

... So, how do I prevent these bogus, redundant history links?
Are you saying you never visited those "bogus" links? Let me improve the description of my problem. I'm at Yahoo.com. Let's say a I scroll down and find an article with title "School is out". I left click it, article opens, I read, I then move my cursor to the upper left back arrow, hold down my left button and often find 2 to 20 redundant listings that refer to the page I just opened. So in this made up example, I would see say 6 "School is out" historical listings and then a Yahoo listing.I never use browser arrow tabs to navigate...Alt + left arrow = last page open...Alt + right arrow = forward to latest page ...I'm old school and tend to ignore toolbars etc...Plus keyboard commands are way quicker...

BTW ...they aren't "bogus" so to speak...they are yahoo cliks...mostly looking for ad revenue. Thanks Patio for taking time to reply.Welcome Aboard...Are you using any Add-ons/Extensions in Chrome? Some of them have known issues that can result in this.

Alt-Left and Alt-Right invoke the same command as pressing the Back or Forward toolbar button, so if multiple entries are appearing in the drop down it is unlikely to behave any differently.Well heck. I've opened a Yahoo article, used the alt back arrow and the load redisplayed the same article. I've now held my left arrow down on the browser back button and I see 3 redundant links to the article then Yahoo.Quote from: asdfghj on December 14, 2016, 10:02:36 AM

I'm not sure you're talking about exactly the same issue as asdfghj. But, I've experienced what you describe. I am quite sure the problem is due to hostile tactics used by some web DEVELOPERS to try to keep you on a certain web page. If I ENCOUNTER one of those web pages when I'm am using FIREFOX, I can click and hold the mouse button on the back arrow and see a list of previously visited pages. Then, while still holding the mouse button down, I can drag the mouse pointer down to any page in that list and release the mouse button on that page to go directly to it.

See the attached image for an illustration of the drop-down list of previously visited pages:

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Glad you posted a pic...i have never used that button...or noticed it. If it happens only on some sites, it's definitely a dodgy developer trying to do dodgy stuff with your browser's history for (USUALLY) increased ad revenue.
It's very common on scammy sites, where developers try to monetize even users who "go back" after realizing how scammy the site they landed on is.
