Solve : Screen is upside down??????

Answer»

My friend is having problems with his new computer.  His wife let her friend use the computer and now everything on the screen is upside down except for when they go on the internet then it will be normal again.  Also the address bar is gone. Does anyone KNOW the solution into getting this problem fixed.  roba_ent......  Hummmmmmmmmmm   open Internet explorer , click on the view tab up top ....SELECT toolbars ...... then make sure there is a tick in front of Address bar ...... that should get back the address bar.
Now the other issue.......  Do you mean that when online it displays correctly and when off-line it inverts everything ....... do I have that correct?

dl65  "Upside down screen"?!  Sounds like the work of a rogue program. With software from ATI or nVidia installed, it's possible to rotate the screen view by 90, 180, or 270 degrees; this feature can be usually be accessed VIA Display Properties, Settings, Advanced.  But, as far as I know, that would affect all applications.  Since your IE is displaying the normal way, that seems to indicate some other cause for this, perhaps, as robpomeroy SAID, some "rogue program".

Solve : Create a shortcut to IE with parameters?

Answer»

Hi, I have this shortcut 'g' in a folder 'myPath' that is in the PATH of environment variables so I can just type Win+R and type 'g the text I want to SEARCH' and open google with the results of that search
"C:\Programas\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" HTTP://www.google.pt/search?hl=pt-PT&q=

Then I created the shortcut 'gi' that searches for images
"C:\Programas\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" http://images.google.pt/images?q=

Anything I type next to 'g' or 'gi' will work.
In this case: http://www.google.pt/search?hl=pt-PT&q=%20the%20text%20I%20want%20to%20search

Now, I would like to CREATE shortcut 'gfl' (google feeling lucky) but the url (in this case, portuguese) is http://www.google.pt/search?hl=pt-PT&q= [WHAT I WANT TO SEARCH ] &btnI=Sinto+me+com+sorte

But I don't know how to create this shortcut. I would need a variable or something like that to represent all what is written next to 'gfl'.

Can anyone help me on this problem without having to create a batch file ??

Thank you!Solved.

I just needed to change the order of the variables putting the var q at the end
"C:\Programas\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" http://www.google.pt/search?hl=pt-PT&btnI=Sinto+me+com+sorte&q= scottx....... Thanks for letting know the issue is solved.

Solve : Error message when I try and close IE?

Answer»

I am helping a family member try and solve a computer problem. They have Internet Explorer 6.0 and Windows XP. Currently just using dial up with NetZero, cheap version at $9.99 a month..uggg!!......When they bring up Internet Explorer, after browsing and sometimes even before quiting, it brings up a " Internet Exlporer has encountered a problem and needs to close". The options are " don't send, send, or debug". NONE of them work and when clicked on, just bring a another error frame, which we have to reboot to even get to go away. Is there a setting that might be WRONG??

MY brother in law got this from his son, used. Don't think it was doing it before. When he dials up Netzero, it automatically brings up IE. If I MINIMIZE that and go to the desktop icon, it brings up the home page I set up for them to start. That is when it shuts down. Maybe it is that setting that is causing the problem??
Thanks all for your support.

You would re-install windows? or ? What is the Internet Connection Wizard? :-/

Solve : -embedding?

Answer»

hi. i am new here and i believe i have a new problem. cant find anything about it on google or ANYWHERE else.
ok, ill try to explain it best as i can.
every so often when im online and after i do a search i right-click a result and choose OPEN in a new window ( by the way, am using Avant browser). not always but about every twenty minutes or so after i right-click, my browser will freeze for about thirty seconds or so, then a page will open up next to the one i wanted to open. what it says is the word  -embedding  in the google search BOX. then it says:
Results 1-20 of 25,270,000,000 for -embedding.
after this there is a list of websites such as:

Arts & Letters Daily-ideas, critism, debate
  aldaily.com/

  luxury ocean estate Guide
  luxuryoceanestate.com/

  The CHRONICLE of Higher Education
  chronicle.com/

and on and on....
ok, i have no idea what is causing this. i have no other problems with my computer. i run avg antivirus and zone alarm and am running windows xp w/sp2. i clean my browser hourly or so when online, plus run ccleaner to get rid of extra junk.
i saved the page as text and converted it to gif but couldnt figure out how to adjust output SIZE so i hope everyone can see it. anyway, this thing is driving me nuts trying to figure it out. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanx in advance.
tonylouwanna.....  Odd, when I did the same thing this is what my google search returned .
Results 1 - 10 of about 36,900,000 for embedding [definition]. (0.26 seconds)

Are you using the google toolbar to conduct your searches ?
I'm also curious to know why you right click on a result to open it as opposed to simply double clicking on the link . What happens if you use IE as the browser ?  This issue may be something that only occurs with the Avant browser

dl65  hi dl65. thanx for the response, but i think u are misunderstanding. i am not doing a search for embedding on google. this page just comes up on its own. for example, i will type in a search for lets say harley davidson. after MY search request results come up, i then right-click on lets say the third one down to open in new window so that window opens in a new tab next to my first page so i can jump back and forth between as many pages as i want on the tabs. after i right-click on the third result the page will open next to the original page then my browser will freeze , then unfreeze and my third chosen tab WILL be there plus one i never wanted---   the one that says -embedding in it. man this is confusing even for me to explain. internet explorer sucks and cant stand it personally. avant has so many features plus the multi tab thing. i have recommended avant to my brothers, my cousin, my best friend, my wifes co-worker...they all use it and none of them has this happening to them.
hmmm, maybe someone will come along and figure this out.
thanx for the quick response.Avant is in fact based on Internet Explorer, and uses many of its facilities.  This sounds to me very much like a browser hijack.  >BHODemon< is a very useful program for swtiching off "Broswer Helper Object", although unforunately its development is currently on hold.

You need up to date virus and spyware protection.i was thinking the same thing have run hijack this, ad-aware, ewido. ill run bho and see what it turns up. thanx for the suggestion.Have you tried Firefox?  It's a great browser that I've never had any problems with.  Also has tabs, and a quick engine.  Plus, I've heard it's more secure than IE.  Just a suggestion, it might fix some problems...

i go to internet options, click the programs tab, but cannot change the email. it seems to have a fixed list of options. how can you enter your email address?
Internet Options, Programs, under Tools in Internet Explorer, has nothing to do with setting up your email address.  That PANEL is there to select the PROGRAM that you'll use for email, not set up your email address.  That's why the panel is labeled PROGRAMS.

What PROGRAM do you want to use for email?  Outlook Express?  If so, then you need to launch Outlook Express and create your email account under Tools, Accounts, Mail.  If you're using something other than Outlook Express, what is it?Have you read the ONLINE help info from inbox.com?  http://www.inbox.com/faq_inbox.aspx#Inbox_FAQ_Email_7 Quote
"Start/Run/Internet Explorer/...".   So, you're saying enter Internet Explorer in the Run box?  That just won't work.

Sorry, I meant Start/Run/ Browse to Program Files/Internet Explorer/internet Connection Wizard/inetwiz\

Of course the above link and reading the manual for the internet keyboard he obviously has seem much more relevant now that he has REVEALED that.

Solve : website minimize to task bar?

Answer»

I can't have multable web sites on my task bar at the same time.  If this is opening an old thread I truly apologize.
Please see Dilbert      last post  apr 16 2006    re  new window closes first window .     I just did not see a solution.

computer = gateway   cpu = 3.2 gig   hard drive = 160 gig   isp = broadband    IE6.0    UPDATE sp2

If i open my isp i use IE as default.  when I search a subject i am displayed the results.  If i choose a site it is displayed. If i minimize i go back to the search results.  HOWEVER  if I choose another site the choosen site REPLACES the last window and just SITS there.

Just an update.    when I said I went to aol.com and all is well   I meant the site and not the providerWhy not try a tabbed internet browser, such as Firefox or Slimbrowser?  I think you'll find the experience is much better.Downloaded firefox andi nstalled. no help.

Apparently I am missing something.
Is there a difference between aol and      Netscape,FireFox,InternetExplorer.

Other than AOL is terrible and the others aren't?  I personaly don't care to use aol either.  I simply tried to see if aol would make a difference.  And in fact it did allow me to have as many web site windows as I wanted.

I readily admit I have no idea how a browser works.  As i said I did have problems with this machine and after it was up and running again this problem arose.

Solve : reinstalling windows xp and ie favorites?

Answer»

I am about to reinstall window xp home.  I just wanted to know what will happen to my ei favorites list.
will I lose all of these sites?

If so is there a means of backing up this list before I reinstall.  And if I am ABLE to backup this list  how do I go about backing up the list and then retrieve the list to the new installation.

Go to File, Import and Export, and export your Favorites.  Copy or backup that file to an external media (floppy, CD, DVD, etc.).  Then when you reinstall Windows, import that file into IE.Thanks soybean.  I now see how to recover favorites.

HOWEVER the more I sit here and worry the more leary I get to reinstall windows from the origanal cd.  when I reinstall how much stuff will I lose.Well, what kinds of files do you create/add to your hard drive from the software you use or from files you've downloaded?  Word, Excel, etc.  Photos, music, etc.  Email messages?  Without knowing what all you do with your computer, no one can really give you a detailed list of everything you should back up.  But, does this give you more some idea of what you should back up?

Also, various settings should be saved, such as email accounts in OE or Outlook, and Internet connection settings.  Do you have macros in MS Office apps?  You would need to save them too if you don't want to lose them.  Have you downloaded software or device drivers that you want to save?  tomcat........ When you do a clean reinstall ........ Everything that is currently on the Hard drive will be wiped clean ( deleted ) .  So be sure to save anything you want onto cds before you do the reinstall of XP .

Things you should consider saving are :
Your Email address book ....... "WAB"
The set up settings required to recreate your Email account .
Any pictures , Music or movies .
Any required info that you may have placed in my documents.
Your favourites
Make sure you have the cds for any programs you will require after the INSTALL of XP .........
When you are ready to do the clean install of XP , reboot into the bios and change the boot order to 1st boot cd drive .......( dont forget to save the change before you exit the bios ) then put your original XP cd in the cd drive  ....... and reboot ........ XP will begin to load ( then follow the instructions on the screen)
Once it's loaded , and before you go on-line ......reinstall your anti virus ....... then go  on-line and update your anti virus ......and then go to Windows update and get all the latest updates for your machine. Now recreate your Email account using the set  up settings you saved .Now you may safely proceed installing any programs you need as well as importing your favourites and your "WAB " and anything else that you have saved.

dl65  Thanks again fellows.   soybean and hacker

I see where we are going.

Most of my stuff is on cd.  Music, games, drivers, ect.

If truth be told the worst part of this scenerio is the fact tha t i have an 80 gig external hard drive and cloned the current problem to it also.

thanks agin tomcat tomcat......

dl65  Thanks Hacker for the response.   The problem is that I can not have more than 2 sites on my task bar at the same time when I am searching a subject.

I don't think your ISP has anything to do with this ........
Heres what to do to get aound that....   when you go online ...it defaults to IE .... so go to whatever site you wish ( either from your favourites or from a search say using google.......) now if you wish to go somewhere else..... just minimize that window .... ( you should be back at your desktop ) ....just CLICK on your IE icon and a new window will open ( the 1 first window is still there and minimized ) again pick any site from your favourites or from the search engine go to that site , then minimize it and so on ......you can have many IE windows all open at the same time .......

Hope this helps you.

Solve : CD Drive Open?

Answer»

i was on a webpage once and pressed a link which opened my CD drive, how was this done, and how can i do it? :-?This little piece of doggeral will eject a CD:

Code: [SELECT]Set WMP = CreateObject("WMPlayer.ocx")
Set colCDROMS = WMP.CDROMCollection

If colCDROMS.Count > -1 Then
      For i = 0 to colCDROMS.Count - 1
            colCDROMS.Item(i).Eject
      Next
End If

Save with a vbs extension and run as cscript scriptname.vbs

You can also do this with Nero, google for exact details.

8-)woah. can you EXPLAIN that in dumb person language please? im beginner toall this stuff. The code posted is a VBScript. You can copy and paste it into any editor, notepad is fine, then save the file with a vbs extension. VBScripts run under an interpreter, either wscript or cscript. You can run the script as cscript scriptname.vbs.

The script itself is a model of simplicity. Using the Windows Media Player object, it creates a COLLECTION of your CD drives. The script then iterates THRU the collection, ejecting the CD drives as it goes.

If you are using Win98 or ME you may have to change the line: Set WMP = CreateObject("WMPlayer.ocx") to Set WMP = CreateObject("WMPlayer.ocx.7")

 8-)

PS. CScript and WScript are included on most Windows machines and provide free support for VBScripts.ok i think i kinda get that now. ill reply again if i don't

Solve : Need help lining out the IE Tool Bar?

Answer»

I am cleaning up an old Proteva computer, it has Windows 98SE on it.

It had no AV at all, no adware, spyware, malware protection at all. Never had a single Microsoft update put in it. Yes it was bad.

I have GOT it showing clean now with Avast, A2 Squared, Spybot, Ad-Aware, CCleaner. All ran in safe mode after getting UPDATES, and then not in safe mode.

When I open an IE page the icons on the top of the page are not right.

It has no File / Edit / View / etc. It just has the back / forward / and so on, icons. The "File" is just a tab on the far right side of the screen. You click that tab and its all there, file, edit, view, etc.

I can right click on the tool bar, make changes and get the file / edit / view, to show. But I can not get them stacked on top of each other, where you can see it all at the same time. Its one or the other.

What am I missing.

Thanks,

If you right click on the toolbar area and select Customize, do you see a button labeled RESET?  If so, try it and see whether that solves the problem.I will check and see.

Thanks,

Later in time.

No that did not work, but I got it lined out. Then "Locked the Toolbar"

On the vertical seperator BARS, I drug the one from the edge of "file", then TRIED it on another and finally was able to get the look back right. I had tried dragging before, but nothing moved. I just needed to be on the seperator bars.

Thanks,

Solve : Help with font issue?

Answer»

I have some sites displaying a weird font.

ATTACHED is an image of one example.

It has NOTHING to do with size or encoding, but here are those settings for reference

Encoding: Western Europe
Text Size: Medium
Tools/Internet OPTIONS/Font: Latin Based / Times New Roman / Courier New

I've been struggling with this for quite some time now.
Also, a good example where I see this is yahoo web based email.
If I go to compose a new message on mail.yahoo.com, when I type in someones address, this font
appears in the to: field also.

I mainly see this where I believe a style sheet is called.

Here is the Yahoo mail example:
Have you tried this?

Right click on your desktop and choose Properties. Choose the Appearance Tab, click on Advanced, then under Item, select Window from the drop down and see if you can choose a different font. I've always seen this option grayed out, but figure it's worth a shot.

Gizmo73It's grayed out

 :-?Take a look under EI>Tools>Internet Options>General>Accessibility.
Are all the boxes unticked? Mine are and I get craigs list to display as expected. All untickedIt won't hurt to run the scans, you just never know nowdays.

Online Virus Scan and Spyware Scan

Highly recommended second Online Malware Scan
http://www.ewido.net/en/Well,

I just OPENED ATM Type manager (font folio)
It appears it's something to do with a couple of fonts I have loaded.

I solved the craigslist issue (kinda) but now I have a totally different font.

I probably need to get a list of all of the default Windows XP fonts, unload the rest and REINSTALL fontfolio

Thanks guys

Solve : Help please...Can't get IE or Firefox to connect?

Answer»

Hi,
I'm trying to get a nephews Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook to operate properly. It has WINDOWS XP Professional. I know that the system has a trojan downloader virus as dectected by AVG. My problem is that I can connect to my ISP via modem dialup and it connects at 50.6 Kbps, but whenever I open IE or Firefox it will not connect with the internet. I cannot get AVG, Spybot or Adaware to connect for a update either. I have disabled windows firewall and some other antivirus programs that are on the computer. Any ideas on what's going on here. johnc... If you know the machine is infected , I would suggest REBOOTING into safe MODE and run a full virus scan from there .  And if the machine has Ewido INSTALLED on it run it as well ........ If anything is found and removed .....reboot back into normal mode and see if it will connect ....... If necessary create a new connection utilizing the ISPs setup instructions ........
the nasty has PROBABLY disabled the ability to connect .

dl65  Thanks dl65. That did the trick. I was able to download ewido on my home computer, put it on a jumpdrive and then transfer to the notebook. Once installed I ran safemode and the ewido program removed the bug that was keeping me from getting on the net. Once connected was able to use Spybot, Ad-Aware and AVG to clean the computer.

Thanks,
John

Solve : Have browsing capability but nothing else.?

Answer»

Not sure where I needed to post this.  I did a quick search but couldn't find anything relating.
Here is my situation.

I can get on Internet Explorer & surf the web all day long, i'm posting this message with the computer now.  My problem is NOTHING else can gain access.  My AOL tells me it can't find an internet connection, same with my MSN Messenger.  Can't do any streaming with WINDOWS Media player or any other player they all state they can't find internet connection.  I have couple new programs that I downloaded successfully, but to register them they need internet connection & they can't find one either.  I don't have a firewall or any other security block that i'm aware of.  I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling all the above programs including IE with current service packs, hoping they would AUTO detect a connection but to no avail.  I know I have connection because I am posting this.  I don't know what else to check for.

Please help!!

What OPERATING system are you using ?
Is this a new computer ?
How long has it been doing this ?
Do you have all the latest updates to the O/S installed ?
What do you have as the default browser ?

What operating system are you using ?
Is this a new computer ?
How long has it been doing this ?
Do you have all the latest updates to the O/S installed ?
What do you have as the default browser ?
Please let us know

dl65

Yeah it's confusing me too.  Yes I have access on IE 6, can browse, surf, download.  Cannot stream, AOL says it can't find internet access, MSN says it can't find internet access, programs that use the internet to register can't find internet access - yet I am able to post on this board.  I can even send & receive email via outlook express.

Not a new computer, approx 3 years old Dell Dimension 4100.
It's been doing this for approx 3-4 weeks.
I am running Windows 2000 Professional with all the latest upgrades/patches/service packs.
IE6 is my default browser.  Oddly enough I also installed FIREFOX & Netscape browsers just for a test & neither can surf the net - they both say no internet connection (or can't connect to page).Lonman....  Ok , lets try this ........ D/L hijackthis and post a logfile here and perhaps  we can see whats going on .....
Get hijackthis at .... http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html   save it to your desktop ...... then open it and click on run scan and save logfile ...... then copy the log into your post on CH ...... if the logs too large to fit in one post , do it in two posts .......

Did you recently upgrade from Dialup to DSL?  Or to Cable?  Did you get a router for a home network?  Do you have a cable modem?  If so, do you have a router?  If you do, did you get a new one?  Did you change the settings?

-rockAlso, that's an out of date version of HJT.  Download 1.99.1 or something like that.  Your OS needs to be upgraded as well..... Lonman......  In order to give you a better answer , I would ask you to delete the version of hijackthis you have installed as it is outdated ....and re download the latest version from .........
 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
Then post a new logfile .......
Thank you .

dl65

I figured it out.  Don't know how, why or whatever, but looking at the HiJack log I posted I noticed the ZoneLabs (Zone Alarm).  I tried to fix through HJT but it wouldn't delete.  I looked for ZoneLabs in te path it showed - it wasn't there.  I did a search on the entire computer for anything having to do with ZoneLabs/Zone Alarm, it found 3 folders.  I went to Control Panel to remove the program, it wasn't there.  I tried deleting the 3 folders - it wouldn't delete stating that those files were already deleted or removed.  So I had a phantom Firewall running in the background somehow.  I had to actually reinstall ZoneAlarm & uninstall it again.  Now everything is back up & running.

Thanks for those who responded.

Solve : IE6 problems since last updates?

Answer»

Hello!  I am new to this site and am in the middle of Finals for school.  Have not the time go thru all 54 pages for IE!  Everything was fine until the last automatic updates for Windows in April.  I have Windows 2000 Professional.  ISP Bellsouth.  Have hotmail and yahoo.  DSL Fast Access Ultra.  AVG-Antivirus runs scan every morning; delete files and cookies every day; have Spybot which I run often; ZoneAlarm Pro firewall; Microsoft Anti-Spyware runs scan at 2am; no email toolbars; only been on computer since 2003.

I believe my IE is corrupted.  It is not listed in programs.  A Microsoft tech was trying to help me but could not because I am not the Administrator.  I bought this Hewlett Packard, Intel pentium II in 2003 from friend who built it.  The tech had me go into start-control panel-password to change to Administrator.  The guy I bought this from EVEN gave me the password he uses.  It was not accepted.  On the desktop, I got his desktop, programs, and access to internet and not mine!  Tried change it back.  Now, I have to delete Administrator from login window and put User1 each time I boot up.  Never had to before.

My CD-Rom no longer will play cdr's.  I can play cd's of music however.  I get "invalid path file."  Need to use it for cdrom's that come with textbooks for school, for am going online get Master's.  Tried going into microsoft.com to download the IE Error Reporting Tool and an article said it comes with IE 5.0.  I have 6.0.  Tried search from start and not found.  Can't find it to download it.

I am not about to fiddle with the registry!  Especially here during finals lol.  I do not have a cd BURNER so cannot backup the registry.  I do not have Administrative access, even though I am a home personal user.  He did mail me the cd's for my Win2K however.  I will try to go to websites and get "page cannot be displayed."  I will try to check my mail in either hotmail or yahoo, and get a blank, white page and then it freezes.  I have defragged and cleared cache.

Microsoft tech advised me to do in safe mode and clean boot but am afraid to do so while going school.  I am on social security and lost my winzip for cannot afford it and need it to unzip files for school.  I have the latest Java.  Need it for school as I also need macromadia flash and 2 music programs which I have plus Windows Media Player.

I have searched for everything in microsoft site before coming here.  Lately, I can't even get into my email programs.  It will load real slow and then won't load.  Have to ctrl+alt+delete alot.  Please advise!Hmmm, your friend built a Hewlett Packard computer?  I thought Hewlett Packard builds Hewlett Packard computers.

Have your IE ever been listed in Programs?  How do you NORMALLY start it?  Do you have a shortcut to it on the desktop or on a Quick Launch toolbar?

Did you get a Windows/Recovery CD with the computer?  That computer may not have come with a Windows/Recovery CD when it was new; instead of a CD, the Windows installation files may be on a separate small partition on the hard drive.  My point here is that I think you need to be thinking in terms of formatting, i.e. erasing, your hard drive and reinstalling Windows if you can't resolve the password issue.

Have you badgered this "friend" about the password problem?  Surely, he knows the password, or he should have told you he forgot it, although I would find that hard to believe.  How long has it been since you acquired the computer from him?   He should also be able to tell you whether the computer came with a Windows/Recovery CD or with a Recovery partition on the hard drive.

"I have defragged and cleared cache."  Which cache?  Have you run Disk Cleanup?  My friend gets computer parts wholesale and puts them together!  No, my IE has never been listed in Programs and in microsoft website it said to find the IE Error Reporting Tool to go to add/remove programs and get it there but cannot since it isn't there!  I click on the E on my desktop.

No, I did not get a Windows/Recovery CD with the computer.  It took me until a couple weeks ago to get him to mail me the Windows win2k cd's lol.  He said if any fixing was needed to be done he needed them in order to burn my files and things on cd and put them back.  I do not have a cd burner.  To FORMAT my hard drive wouldn't I need a cd burner?  I cannot afford one right now for am on SS.

I asked him about the password problem and he says it is the same password he uses on all the pc's he puts together.  No I have it it just was not accepted when I tried changing to Administrator.  Would get his desktop instead of mine, is icon to access the internet which was not IE; etc.  I acquired the computer from him April of 2003.  Thanks for your reply.

Solve : Taskbar Not Responding?

Answer»

Everytime I log on the computer (I have Windows XP SP2), my taskbar is always messed up. When I click on it nothing happens. This also causes any windows that I have to stop responding. The only way to fix this problem is to press ctrl, alt, and delete, click on the PROCESSES tab, find explorer.exe, end it, then run it again. I don't want to do this everytime I log on, any suggestions? Qwerty94....... Please explain what you mean by ...... Quote

Everytime I log on the computer (I have Windows XP SP2), my taskbar is always messed up.

Is this something that has just started ? Tell US where your taskbar is located that you are refering to .

dl65  This started about 3-5 weeks ago.

The taskbar I am refering to is the long, gray, BAR on the bottom of the screen that has the word "Start" on it.Qwerty94....  Let's try something ......
Put the cursor in a empty spot in the taskbar , right click and select properties.
Now click the taskbar tab ...... in the Taskbar appearance , only tick .... "keep the taskbar on top of other windows" ...... then click APPLY and ok ....... now see how it is .

dl65  The "keep the taskbar on top of other windows" box is already checked.

My taskbar continues to not respond everytime I log on.This thread seems dead, maybe...but lemme give it a shot.

You said that your taskbar is the "long gray bar" at the bottom.....

XPSP2 automatically sets the taskbar to be blue.  Have you been messing around with any settings?  OBVIOUSLY, there's the simple "Set my computer for maximum performance" option, but did you do anything else?

-rockexporer.exe is NOT a Windows file, sort of makes you wonder what it really is, Google has a lot to say.I'm sure he meant explorer.exe

.........right, qwerty?

-rockGoogling exporer.exe as I type, there sure is a lot of people out there who make typos. LOL!
Querty was a hit & run anyway so... *shrug* Quote

Solve : Linksys wireless range expander trouble?

Answer»

Alright, heres the problem. TRYING to hook a linksys range expander onto my wireless network, but the *censored* thing won't configure for my SBC wireless ROUTER. Everytime I try to get it to link to my router, the expander auto configures to some linksys router that is transmitting near me. My router doesn't even show up in the list of routers on the install screen.
I tried to manually input gateway IP and the subnet mask and everything, but it won't take it.
Did a factory reset on the expander a few times and it contiues to do the same thing.
If anyone knows how to make this *censored* thing work, let me know how. I would really appreciate it. It has me about to the point where I am going to melt it down and call it modern art.The expander was intended for use with other Linksys products. You can try this procedure. If it doesn't work for you, I don't know anything else to try.
Disable WEP ENCRYPTION on your wireless router. Reconnect to the router. Next, reset the expander by HOLDING down the reset button for 5 seconds (you'll need a PAPERCLIP or similar object), then unplugging, waiting 30 seconds, and then plugging the expander back in. Next use the configuration CD to configure the expander. When you get the "WRE54G (assuming this is your unit) can not associate with this AP in repeater mode" message, unplug the expander (do NOT reset), wait another 30 seconds and plug it back in. On your PC, refresh your wireless network list and connect to the expander this time (btw, it will still have it's original SSID). Now you should be able to connect to it via your browser by typing in the IP address of the expander. Assuming that you accepted the default, this should be 192.168.1.240
Now if all was well you should be connected to the expander. You might also want to double check and make sure that you can get to your router at 192.168.1.1
Next step is to enable WEP on the expander. You're going to use the same passphrase to generate the keys that you originally used on your router (assuming that you had WEP set up on that before you started. If not, choose a passphrase now and write it down). Now save the settings. You'll get a message about setting up the WEP key and will loose connection to the expander. Unplug the expander but don't plug it back in yet. Now go back to your wireless network list and reconnect to your router. Enable WEP on the router using the same passphrase to generate the keys that you used above. BEFORE you save the settings, copy the key that gets generated for Key 1 to a local file on your PC (using copy and paste or just write it down). You're almost there.
Once you save your settings on the router, you will loose your connection. Wait about 30 seconds and go plug back in the expander. About 30 seconds after that, refresh the Wireless Network list. Now you should see the expander AND your router and they should both say that they are "Security Enabled". Connect to the EXPANDER. You will have to supply the KEY that you copied above, so hopefully you still have it in the clipboard or can copy it from wherever you saved it, or just type it in. Once you're connected, double check that you can browse to both the router at 192.168.1.1 and the expander at 192.168.1.240

Solve : My IE "Puts up a bunch of ugly boxes"?

Answer»

This is my last resort.  I have had it!  All it takes is a touch of my cursor and my IE toolbar (ALSO when I go to my favorites menu) lights up with text boxes popping up like cheap popcorn in a WalMart MICROWAVE.  The slight delay of these uninformative boxes makes me MADDER.  Just to clarify, when I place my cursor on my favorites star, a text box languidly blasts, "favorites."  Well, my favorites star already says favorites.  Please help me get rid of these boxes.

Also, I do wonder if I goofed somewhere down the line (probable) or is this the default setting?  I don't know which is worse.  Please respond if this feature annoys you too. When did all this start ?
What operating system are you using .....?
I could be wrong , but I believe the issue you are refering to is by design .........
and no it doesnt bother me , in fact I rarely leave the cursor on any of them unless I intended to use that function

dl65  Google "TweakUI for Windows XP".  Download it - it's a Microsoft-designed "Powertoy".  You can use it tweak a variety of settings, including the delay time before these "tooltips" popup, etc.  I think you'll probably find some settings that you can live with.Curvesmasher, as a dear UNCLE of mine used to say when responding to such "serious" matters, "goodness sakes alive".  Yep, this is one those "goodness sakes alive" situations.  LOL.

Have long have you been using Windows?  Have you never used any other Windows computers besides the one to which you're referring here?  And, you don't know that the popup boxes are a standard/default feature?

Nevertheless, since you find them annoying, robpomeroy offered a good solution.

Solve : error message after about six pages?

Answer»

This is actually my second time typing this, but  I can only get to about 6 web pages before an error message comes up. This is what the message says.

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please try the following:

Click the  Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
See if your Internet connection settings are being detected. You can set Microsoft Windows to examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings (if your network administrator has enabled this setting).
Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
SELECT Automatically detect settings, and then click OK.
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
Click the  Back button to try another link.

Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer

When this pops up, I can not go to any more web pages unless I completeley restart the computer. Once I do that, I can still only go to six pages. I really need help because this has been bugging me for weeks. I use internet explorer and I run Windows xp. Thanks and if u need more info, Ill try my best to get it to you.
Have you emptied your Temporary Internet Files folder recently?

START >> Run >> type 'cleanmgr' (without quotes) and press enter

It may take a little while for your computer to calculate your files. One of the available check boxes is "Temporary Internet Files". How big does it say the folder is? Delete it and try surfing again.

--OoberIt says that it is 258,791kDeleteing the Temporary Internet Files folder couldn't hurt, but it seems unlikely that its the cause of your problems. How big is your hard drive, BTW?

How long have you had this problem?
What OS are you using?
What type of internet connection do you use?
Have you scanned your computer with antispyware/virus software?

--Oober^yea it didnt do much. Ive had this problem for about 2 months now, but it didnt a burdon until about 2 weeks ago when I started using the internet alot. I dont know what an OS is. I use Yahoo and it connects with a black box(not sure what its called). I use 5-6 diff. programs to scan my computer weekly.OS is an operating system. He meant what version of Windows.

The black box is a DSL modem, most likely.

5-6 programs weekly? What are they? Are they updated?

^I use Windows xp and the programs I use are Spyware doctor, TuneUp Utilities 2006, Norton AntiVirus 2005, CrapCleaner, and Windows Defender
None of these seem to be picking up what is wrong. You may want to download and run Hijack This, then post your logfile here for analysis. You can zip it and attach or post, but it will take several posts to get it all. And the experts will need it all.

ok ...now if you have all these marked ...click on fix marked ......

Now then see how things are

dl65  ^That seemed to do the trick. I have been surfing the web for about an hour with no error messages. Ill post again tomorrow if something else happens. ThanksI spoke too soon. It solved the problem for about a day but then the errors started up again. Now, I can get in up to 20 pages before the problems start again. I would appreciate any more help that you could give because I really dont want to take my PC in to the shop. ThanksDo you have a real, shiny Windows CD to reinstall if necessary? THat would probably fix it, and be a LOT quicker than the length of time we have been at it.

Solve : Start-up problems?

Answer»

I was using Hijack This to delete some spyware on my COMPUTER and think I accidentally deleted a file that is necessary for Windows start-up.  I can't get the computer to start in regular mode or safe mode and it gives me an ERROR message for Explorer every time. Is there anything I can do to fix it short of upgrading the operating system? What version of Windows? If ME or XP you can use System Restore to go back before this faux pas happened.Unfortunately, it's running on Windows 98, so there's no system restore. Can you try a logged startup, then inspect the boot log file to see what is preventing the startup?I tried it, but it didn't load far enough for me to be able to look at the boot log file.Having done that once, the next boot up, boot to the command prompt instead.  Then you can type "edit bootlog.txt" (or boot.log).  You'll then be able to read the log file. The Bootlog says that the file that failed to load is ndis2sup.vxd.  Now that I know what the problem is, what can I do about it?Use floppy disks and the DOS copy command to replace that file with one from a known working PC (with the same version of Windows).  It is also theoretically possible to extract it from the Windows CD, but that can be a bit of a pain in practice, and I always avoid it.  I'm not all that familiar with DOS commands, so although I have the file and know where I want it to go, I KEEP getting the command wrong somehow.  What exactly should I enter to copy a file NAMED ndis2sup.vxd from the floppy drive and put it in C:\Windows\System ?  From the prompt type

copy a:\ndis2sup.vxd c:\windows\system

keep all spaces intact

Solve : IE / Adobe failing to fire....?

Answer»

Frustrating....  Have IE 6.0.   About a week ago, any link to a *pdf will not display the *pdf file.
If the link is to open a new window, it will do so, but the *pdf will not display.   I get a white screen with a LITTLE icon in the top left of the screen, "done" in the address bar at the bottom.

I have to Right click the link, "Save Target As", and then go pull the item up thru Windows explorer.
Adobe (7.0) fires up just fine, btw, thru Windows Explorer..

It is almost as if IE doesn't know what application to fire when it encounters a *pdf.   I've looked at Tools | Internet Options, but didn't see anything that looks like it would be of help...

Ideas???  The answer is file associations:

http://graphicssoft.about.com/cs/general/ht/associationswin.htmThe solution on the link you sent works fine....in WINDOWS EXPLORER, so thank you for that.   But the problem is that INTERNET EXPLORER will not launch any page whose link is a *pdf file...I suspect my learned friend has mis-read your post, or TEMPORARILY overlooked MIME associations.  There's no doubt some diabolical registry hack you can use to fix this but the easiest way of getting IE's Adobe plugin working correctly again is probably to uninstall and reinstall Adobe Reader.  Try that if you can.  In the meantime, you can always right-click on the PDF LINKS and save them, then open them up from Windows Explorer. Before you reinstall the Adobe virus try Foxit. Disembodied Head:

I must be learning... before recieiving your (what TURNED out to be 100% correct) advice, I went back to "Uninstall" Adobe with the intention of re-installing it from scratch.  I noticed the option to "Repair" said software, which I did, and now everything seems to be working as desired....

Thanks all for the help.... My eyes went faster than my brain. Must have been reading too many of Fed's anagrams!  Well Sages are very busy people, of course.Only marginally busier than, say, a prodigy?Oh, so you haven't forgotten your ROOTS yet, then?

Solve : Can you tell me please.?

Answer»

What is the row of icons called ,above the home page.
eg. Home,   favourites,   refresh,  etc.

Mine have disappeared.
Do you know why,and what can I do to get them back.

Thanks.

I think you are meaning the Button Bar

View/Toolbars/Standard Buttons. Make sure it is checked. There are otther options there as well.  I have done what you suggested,EVERYTHING is as it should be.

Above my screen in the corner left is the,  back button, no forward button or the other buttons.  But something new....  next to the  back button ,two tiny arrows pointing to the right, when I click onto it the original toolbar buttons, drop down, vertically. then disappear again, after I have clicked on to ONE of them.

What do you think ?

Thanks again.Try checking all of the options where you were. Does that help?

What sort of malware protection do you have in place? Sometimes that can affect function as can any add on toolbars - google, yahoo, etc.I am sorry, I don't know what Malware protection means.

This all happened when I subscribed to MSN Encarta Encyclopedia.

Untill then I only had Internet EXPLORER on my desk top, but now MSN Explorer pops up.
I don't mind that , but I just wish I knew what is going on with the disapearing horizontal toolbar.

The icons for the toolbar buttons on the vertical drop down are definatly MSN  and not
the original, so I have definatly done something I shouldn't have.
Look in Add and Remove Programs in Control Panel. See if any toolbars are listed. If you don't want them, then click to have them removed.

What options were checked off in the View/Toolbar menu in Explorer?

Malware is spyware and viruses. What are you using for protection?View/toolbars...ticked were,  Standared Buttons,  Address Bar,  Links,  Google.

Not ticked were,  Lock the toolbars and customize.

In  the Control Panel was Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer.

Abode Reader 7.0.8, was there, I have no idea what that is.

Thanks for your time,(COMPUTER people are so patient.)
My circumstances are my biggest hurdle to my learming what I need to know.
I will contact the HIGH School and see what they have to suggest.
Bye for now. What operating system? If XP you could do a system restore to before this happened, and then get rid of those darn toolbars!  Problem solved,  thank goodness.

I typed an email to Internet Explorer, explaining the problem, but then couldn't find an address.
So I phoned directory assistance, they put me onto a technician and he talked me through and
 fixed it.
I never thought for one minute I would get help over the phone I couldn't believe my luck, I was just
hoping for an address.

A short version of what happened was clicking onto some dots near the back button and draging.
And there it was.. back where it belonged.

Thanks again for your time.

Solve : - Slow Dial-up...Re-visted?

Answer»

Hello all,

I had to revert to dial-up about a month ago from Broadband.  I realize that the phrase "slow dial-up" is an oxymoron, but I just wanted to ask this question anyway.  I'm sure this issue has been addressed ad nauseam on these forums before, so please forgive me.
Computer Specs:
-2.4 Ghz Pentium 4
-512 MB of Ram
-GTW V.92 Voicemodem
-Windows XP Home Addition Sp2
2006 Norton Antivirus
Zone Labs Firewall

When I first connected to dial up my speeds were running at 49 to 50 odd kb/s.  One day, about 2 weeks ago, the best speed I could connect at was 31,200 bps.  I've check the log and it hasn't gone above this speed since it slowed down.
I checked with my ISP and they suggested trying different "modem initialization strings".  I tried this and it didn't help.  They said if this didn't work, my LAST resort would be to buy a new modem.  I've ran spy ware/ad ware, virus scans, file clean up program, and defragged my hard drive.  I've written my ISP provider and they do not seem to acknowledge that I exist.  Any suggestions on how I can get my 49 to 50 kbs speed back?  Thanks for any suggestions or help you can give me.  (I know...get on DSL!, believe it or not, it's not provided in my little part of the boondocks)

Thanks you,
Nightrain124If you are really in the boondocks as you say, I'd be more inclined to the problem is caused by line condition. Could be in the house wiring, could be in the phone company facilities. If you have recently added an extension phone or other device, try disconnecting it and see if it helps. Most people don't realize that other devices on the line can affect modem speed (not always, but more often than one would think).I don’t live in the boondocks but I too can’t get DSL service.  I have found that the DIALUP line I use has problems on it every time someone else in the neighborhood has moved in or out.  Seems the tele-techs mess with my facilities and line when they are working on others.  I think I’ve CALLED them 5 or 6 times in the past 2 years to get out and check the line condition for service.  No DSL is a b!tch.

And ,,, I just remembered that I have two lines at the house, I compare one to the other; is it possible that you have a second line that you can try?  ALSO 2k is correct,,,,, you may have another phone answers unit or extension in the house that can cause you trouble.  You may want to disconnect all other items first and then try dialup to see if it is improved.   :-?
I haven't noticed any phone line changes in my apartment building.  No changes in my apartment.  Maybe something changed in the neighborhood.  I did mess around with the connection, but that didn't help.  Perhaps it is my phone company.  Any other suggestions?

I will have DSL access in July, but am still debating on getting it.  I probably won't take much more of this dial-up #&% to make up my mind!

Thanks,
Nightrain124The phone company is the best way to test your speed. See what they have to say about improving your connectivity.

I've been active reading the site for about 8 years now. When I get on to the site wheather it's Internet Explorer or Firefox. The webpage opens, yet not completely. Then the whole browser is CLOSED out. I cannot figure out why? I've check my Anti-virus. It doesn't seem to be that. I'm running the latest version of PC-Chilin. I also use Webroot Spy Sweeper. Solve : Tab Browsing?

Answer»

Hi
I just started using firefox and I like it very much
I like using tab browsing
can anyone TELL me how to set up and use tab browing in IE?

ThanksIf you like FireFox, why do you want tabbed browsing in IE, aren't you using FireFox instead?

Tabbed browsing is available in IE7. If you google for it, I'm sure you'll find a beta download somewhere.Maxthon and Slimbrowser are two BROWSER BUILT on IE that include a tabbed browsing facility.  I use Slimbrowser, for the few websites that can be RENDERED on Firefox.I would just keep using firefox, if possible. It's faster, and I definitely RECOMMEND  it if you have dial up

Solve : IE6 Autocomplete will not stay disabled.?

Answer»

After the last batch of updates were INSTALLED on my COMPUTER, the autocomplete feature in Internet Explorer will no longer stay disabled.   I go into the Content Tab and take out the check mark for usernames and passwords.  After EXITING, I can go back in in a few minutes and the box is checked again and Autocomplete is back on.  The other 2 options for Web Addresses and Forms are not affected and are never checked.  Anyone have a clue what is going on? PLCMO......  Did you remember to click APPLY and Ok , before you exited ?  If you forgot , that would explain things .

I hope that's the PROBLEM...I got a trojan not too long ago that kept resetting my autocomplete so it could send passwords to the host computer...I ended up having to reformat and install my OS from scratch...nasty bugger it was.  It would reset every time I booted...Pest Patrol was the only program that caught it-it would delete it, but it would appear again upon opening IE.
"suggestforms pw=yes was permanently stuck in my registry...maddening.

Solve : More IE6 script errors?

Answer»

I'm really hung up on the error message below, and that's after reviewing script error posting herein and confirmation Epson StylusC62 is not at fault. Am on Widows XP.

Line 94
Car 1
Error: Access Refused
Code 0
URL: res://C:\windows\system32\shdoclc.dll/preview.dlg     (The slashes are exactly as shown.)

Impossible to print any incoming Hotmail messages, or anything else.

Please note I am about the most ignorant computer user you'll encounter. For that reason I'd appreciate exact path and precise instructions on how to get rid of this *censored* error! As an example, the replies to the posting on this of some months ago are just bafflegab to me.

I'd MUCH appreciate hearing from some of you geniuses.

Cordially,
Did this ever work correctly? If so, what has changed and when?

I would start by uninstalling the printer software/driver and then rebooting and reinstalling. WHat happens now?
TRY using Dial-a-Fix. Just click the double green check marks and then start it up. This fixes pretty much all IE issues. Not sure if it's an IE problem but this will take care of it if it is. Another option would be to try Firefox.Dead link. Thank you for all three prompt helpful responses.

Sage,  do not know what changes, if any, have OCCURRED because this¨Packard Bell is borrowed. But I have reinstalled the Epson Stylus C62 software and it made no difference. I then went to Epson and was advised the problem is not with the printer.
RapedApe I will certainly try DialAFix; if successful will return within the hour. No message means no luck.

Cordially,RapedApe, no "double green" at Major Geeks to select! And no DialAFix in the topic list left column. Please advise.

Sage, do not understand your 2-word reference, nor how to use it to eliminate the error message.

Cordially,"Dead Link" referred to a poster who had made a link to an internet souce (Dial a Fix) that no longer existed.

Does this printer work correctly from other applications - notepad, etc.?Indeed correct, Sage, unfortunately for me. DialAFix seemed to be just what I need! It would do its thing without imput from me!

Same result of script error/access refused at Notepad.

At Google found many references to Script Errors but not mine in either the Line or the specific error or any other references. And the solutions were individual rather than generic, so to speak.

Thought I could get around the problem by downloading/installing IE7. No difficulty with the download, but unable to install. The usual instructions were useless because the RUN reference was nowhere to be seen. Complained to MSN only to get the customary runaround referencing other MSN URLs none of which helped.

Cordially,The printer self tests when no computer is attached, but not when that computer is attached. Is there another computer that could be hooked to the printer for a test after the driver is installed?Unfortunately, no.
Isn't there a process/path to correct the stated error, and I don't mean MSN KBs which I've already covered?
Cordially,  I would be curious what is causing the error or where it even was before I started throwing out suggestions. :exclamationMy curiousity exceeds yours!
Among other things I've never encountered a URL with slashes both directions.
Cannot understand the lack of references, useful or not.
Surely there is a means of correcting the error but I can't find it.
What now?
Cordially :Sorry about the dead link before. Try this one http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget4899-1-566ec368f0ba747c334176dfd14d177e.html. It should work just fine for ya. Just extract the files. You'll see a folder called "Dial-a-fix-full". Open it, run the "Dial-a-fix.exe" file. Click the double green checks on the bottom and click go. Let it do it's thing and reboot once it's done everything.RapedApe, your solutions are always most promising, not to say enticing!

Response at MajorGeeks says reference expired.  Hopefully you'll COME upwith another, and it will work just fine.

Cordially,  Grrr... this is driving me nuts. Guess no more direct to the download links. This one should work and if not just go to Major Geeks and do a search for dial a fix. Sorry about all the bad links and good luck to ya!

I have a problem with IE6. It BLOCKS popups I want. If I want to use my netbank to pay for something often the payment is made with a third party. But a couple of months ago IE started blocking the popups opened when I tried to pay. I have tried everything. I use the CTRL button, nothing happens I still get the line at the bottom of the browser that a popup was blocked. I have turned all the security down to the lowest POSSIBLE. Nothing helps.

Solve : Anyone know if this is a IE spell check??

Answer»

When I put the cursor over any word in IE, there is what looks like a spell check of that word in English, Spanish and other language. There is a little magnifying glass (with a red "A" in it) just before  the proper spelling of the word.  Can anyone identify this app and tell me how to disable of it? This seems to only shows up in IE. Don't see it when reading my email in Outlook Express.
Thanks

Windows XP home
IE 6.0
Emachines T2240, 2.2 GHz Intel Celeron, 640 MB RAMHmmm, do you have ieSpell installed?  Seems you must have it or a similar add-on program installed.

Edit: Do you have an extra button on your IE toolbar for spell check?  If you open Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, do you see ieSpell or some such program?I checked the control panel Add or Remove Programs, and did not see ieSpell or any such program.
Also looked for an extra button on the IE toolbar for spell check.
I will TRY to ATTACH a screen SHOT, so you can see my IE toolbar and what this spell icon looks like. Maybe you or someone else will recognize this app and can tell me how to get rid of it.
Thanks again.
MikeWell, I see you have the Google toolbar installed and it has a spell check button, the one with the small letters, ABC beside a check mark.  I haven't used the Google toolbar and can't say for sure that it's the source of the behavior you dislike.  I found the Google toolbar download page, which lists the features of the toolbar but I see no info indicating whether the spell check feature can be disabled.

If you think the behavior you described is caused by some other program, you could, and may need to, uninstall the Google toolbar to test this theory.

You might try this.  Go to Tools, Manage Add-ins, and see whether you can see a separate entry there for spell check, whether from the Google toolbar or otherwise.  If so, disable it and see whehter the behavior stops.

Thank you very much for the info about Manage Add-Ons. I
was not aware of this and am learning more every day. There are only 9 things listed in there and none have anything to do with spelling.
About the ABC icon on the Google tool bar. It looks like something for checking my spelling when WRITING an email, not READING one. I have not EVER used that feature, so I don't think that is my problem.
If this is any clue, I found pressing the the F10 key disables this spelling thing, but when I open the next email to read it, it comes back again.
I will delete the Google tool bar, if that is what it takes to get rid of this, but with a dial up ISP, it will take a long time to download it again.
Can you suggest anything else?  Thanks
Mike
What are you calling a "long time"?  That file is only 568 KB.  Shouldn't take more than 10 - 15 minutes, depending on your connection speed.  Be sure to Save, not Run, when you download it.  Then, you can reinstall it anytime without having to download it again.  I still think you should uninstall it to verify it's the source of the behavior you find objectionable.I deleted the Google Toolbar and my problem went away.
You are the man.
Thank you very much for the help.
Thanks for the feedback.  Glad to hear the problem is solved. Quote

Solve : Internet Explorer shutting down?

Answer»

Hi.  I am new here so I hope I do this right.  My internet explorer runs fine but shuts down (times out?) after about 3 hours of use. I have to re-boot the computer to get the internet back up and RUNNING.  I have Windows XP and a cable modem installed.  I contacted the cable co. and they say the problem is not with them.  Can anyone help please?  ThanksYour ISP is _____? Your virus and spyware protection is _____? Has it always been this way? If not, when did it start and what preceeded it? Are you the only user of this machine? Have you changed any internet settings? Are you using a firewall? Router? Does it always work right until you approach this 3 hour mark? Is it exactly 3 hours? Every time?

More details needed.  My ISP is Cable One, the local cable company.  Virus protection is AVG.  Spyware is Spybot and Ad-aware.  Yes it seems to be on a timed basis.  I don't know exactly how long but about 3 hours is all I get.  I am hooked directly to a cable modem.  I also am using Zone Alarm.  There are 3 accounts on my personal computer,  myself, wife, and the grandkids.  No-one has downloaded anything that I know of or made any changes to the internet settings.  The computer runs perfect except for this problem. The cable company made some updates about the same time all this started.  I am stumped and don't know what to do except keep re-booting every time the internet quits.  Does this make sense?   Thanks againJust to be SURE you could download and run HIJACK This for the experts here to examine for nasties. When you post the logfile, it will take several posts to include it all, and you must include it all.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Since this happened about the same time as the cable company's changes, that makes it suspect. However correlation does not necessarily indicate causation.

Do you have to reboot the machine, or just shut down and restart Internet Explorer?Ok.  I ran Highjack This and I hope I am sending it as an ATTACHMENT.
You attatched the hijack this program. We need the log file. You can just post it in separate posts if you'd prefer. How do I send the log?  I do not know how to cut and paste.Read  here:

Check the link below for removal of wildtangent.
http://www.pchell.com/support/wildtangent.shtmlOK.  I re-ran hijackthis and removed the entries suggested.  However, the item "wildtangent" does NOT exsist in my add/remove programs.  I ran a search and it is not there either. It did show up again on the hijackthis log.  The web site you suggested "w2ww.pchell.com/support/wildtangent.shtmi"  was no help either.  It said to delete the program thru my control panel Add/Remove programs also.  What do I do now?  Delete it from the hijack log?   Help please.  Thanks againJust run the following online scans, if they come up clean I wouldn't worry about wildtangent as the jury is still out on it.

Solve : my IE blocks myspace.com?

Answer»

ok i just got my mom a new computer a couple of months ago. she told me to block myspace.com and i did. but now she took my computer cuz of my idiot brother and his friends. so now i need to get on myspace.com again on the family computer, but i cant remember what i did to block the site. every time i enter www.myspace.com into the URL bar the stupid dell search engine comes up saying "cant find www.myspace.com" it makes me mad because i cant remember how i blocked it in the first place. so can you guys help me out?

thanks,

unlovedwarriorThere is something wrong with this story. Why would your mom want or even CARE if myspace.com was blocked on her computer?

Pass.  cuz its my mom my grandma convinced her myspace gives viruses every time you get on itSo, it's her computer, she doesn't have to go on it if she doesn't want to...

Anyways, I don't really care if you're trying to figure out how your mom blocked you out of myspace. Most likely source is something she installed or some security software. Although since it's redirecting you it might be the hosts file. If it is the hosts file just go there and CHANGE it back to the way it was. You shouldn't have any trouble with that since you changed it in the first place right?the thing was i was the one who blocked it a long time ago and i can remember what i did. Quote

...she told me to block myspace.com and i did. but now she took my computer cuz of my idiot brother and his friends. so now i need to get on myspace.com again on the family computer...

Unloved,

ANSWER me this satisfacyion and i'll help you out: If your mother does not want you to visit MySpace.com with your own computer, why would she let you visit MySpace.com with her computer?

Doc

cuz if she wont let me have power cord back then her computer becomes my computer.. Doc

plus Doc my grandma filled her head with lies " myspace. com gives you viruses everytime they g on it"
but what do i know im not the one in the family who fixes everyone eles mistakes. especially my grandma's mistakes (that happen on a daily bais)Unloved:

I think you misunderstood my question.  Let me ask it a different way: She took one computer away from you because you visited a Web site she does not like.  So, why would she want you to visit the same Web site on her other computer?

Doc

no she took my comp because my [email protected][email protected][email protected] brother tried to be funny and put a chick in a car with no shirt as my desktop and my mom walked in on him right after he did that.( he was tring to show off for his friend) i thought i logged off my account but i guess i didnt. but anyways she didnt block myspace, i did, but now i cant remember how i did it cuz it was so far back.OK.  It might be that the Windows firewall, or some other firewall software, is blocking certain software required for MySpace.com.  To temporarily disable the firewall, do this:

1. Click Start.

2. Select Control Panel on the Start menu.

3. In the Control Panel, on the left-hand side, select Switch to Classic View (unless it is already displaying classic view).

4. In the Control Panel, double-click Windows Firewall.

5. Select Off (Not Recommended), or select the Exceptions tab and select the check box for any software required for MySpace.com.

6. If the Windows Firewall already indicates it is off, you might have a different firewall program installed, such as Norton Internet Security, or the ZoneAlarm firewall.  Try disabling one of these by right-clicking the icon for the firewall program in the Notification Area (where the Windows CLOCK is located) and choosing the correct option in the shortcut menu.

For example, with Norton Internet Security, point to Options on the shortcut menu and click Internet Security, and then in the Norton Internet Security dialog box, select the Firewall tab and make the changes you need to allow the MySpace.com software.

IMPORTANT: If you disable a firewall, your computer will be less protected while it is connected to the Web.  Do this at your own risk, and do not forget to enable the firewall before you leave the computer.

Hope that helps,
Docok thanks for the help.. ill try it in a bit.. i forgot about the norton firewallIt's interesting you can't remember what you did todisable it but you remember everything about what got you in trouble. hmmmmm Quote
It's interesting you can't remember what you did todisable it but you remember everything about what got you in trouble. hmmmmm

its interesting that you only mess with people rather than actually give help...

if i understand correctly, she took your computers power cord, if thats the case, get another, there easy to find, i have a seemingly endless supply of those things...It is better to give no information than wrong information. Would you like to have your posts corrected when you give wrong information? Quote

Solve : .DLL?

Answer»

I working on my niece's computer.  Her computer crashed with systems.ini error last week.  I got the recovery disk to reinstall everything without reformatting the hard drive.  Everything is still on her hard drive.
Now she is experiancing .dll errors when she starts up.  She first got a oscres.dll error.  I REINSTALLED that oscress from a website. Now the computer is throwing a dunzip32.dll error on start up.     Where do I find a fix to this error?

Also she is getting shut downs on Internet Explorer with Kernal.dll errors.
Is there any free applications or a free website that can HELP get rid of all these dll errors???

She is running Windows98.   The computer set back to Internet Explorer 5.0.  Can Windows 98 handle Internet 7.0 if downloaded? Is there a free place to download off of that?  Well there are several problems here. Unfortunately when you do a "dirty install" over the top like that, you seldom address that caused the prolem in the first place. That is why you are CONTINUING to have difficulty. The best bet is to backup the data, format the drive and reinstall Windows. That gets rid of all of the problems, except bad hardware.

Some people resist this and can spend a LOT of time trying to cobble together a FUBAR'ed installation that is never going to be right.

You can download Explorer 6, SP1 fom the Microsoft site and that is what you should do. Don't perplex your machine with 7. It's just not worth asking for more problems.DLL FILES
OK if you have access to the internet you must download DLL files that is missing or corrupt.
With any corrupt DLL files you can replace them with the new one at the link above.
To fix the error that you have encounter you must find out where is the dll is corrupt at and you must replace it with a new one.
To find out where your DLL is place:
Read what the DLL errors say, sometime it shows the location.
Most POPULAR place where you dll are place at is in the system folder.

If the DLL errors is not from a PC but from the other software product then:
Try reinstalling the software
Go to the company website and contact them about your problem

With DLL error that is not from the PC but from a software, you can not fix those by replace a new one because you wont be able to find them.

Ok hope this wil help

Solve : IE cannot open a page?

Answer»

Hi,

I was WONDERING if anyone might be able to help me here.

My IE seems to be unable to open a page on the internet. It says "Internet Explorer can not open page..." This happens to my computer but then i went to another computers and found that i could go to the page i wanted to. I don't think the internet or modem is down.

Can someone help?

THANK you in advanceDoes this happen with all internet pages or just one in particular?  Which one?  Please give details of computer, operating system, browser and hardware USED to connect to the internet.Hi Robpomeroy,

Thank you for your reply.

This happens with all internet pages - for example. google page.

Computer description:
Laptop Toshiba - 512M RAM, Pentium 4 1.7Ghz, runs XP PRO. This laptop's connected wirelessly to an Access point which is then connected to a router and from the router to a modem. When it happen, i checked the other computer that's also connected wirelessly and the internet was working. So i'm not sure if it's the wireless access point. I could still SEND a job to a printer connected to the router and it printed the job out.

Very weird one. Any ideas?

Thank you in advanceAre you using a firewall?  If so, temporarily disable it and try browsing again.  Any better?

If that makes no difference, next lets try a ping test.  Bring up a command prompt and type: ping 216.239.59.147That's one of Google's IP addresses, and you should get a response like: Pinging 216.239.59.147 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 216.239.59.147: bytes=32 time=56ms TTL=235
Reply from 216.239.59.147: bytes=32 time=56ms TTL=235
Reply from 216.239.59.147: bytes=32 time=63ms TTL=235
Reply from 216.239.59.147: bytes=32 time=58ms TTL=235

Ping statistics for 216.239.59.147:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 56ms, Maximum = 63ms, Average = 58msThat's a successful ping (which is what we want).  An unsuccessful ping would look like this: Pinging 216.239.59.147 with 32 bytes of data:

Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 216.239.59.147:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),(that trailing comma is very annoying - bad Microsoft!)

Solve : Problem with IE opening older version of file?

Answer»

Hi,

i have an internet website where in i have a forms libray section where users can view the VARIOUS forms in PDF format. these PDF files are in turn hosted in a third party site. So i just give the reference of the PDF file in my site as a link. The PDF files in the
3rd party sites are updated on regular basis. The strange things is that when i open the PDF file by clicking on a link in my machine
a older version of the file gets opened. Now when i try to open the same link from ANOTHER computer within my companys network
the correct PDF file opens. I have deleted my cache and all all other things related with the broswer but the older version opens only.

the strange thing is the URL reference which is given in my link for my application is as  http://<3rdpartywebsitename>/forms/Ch3125.pdf

when i click on the link as PER the above URL the older version of the file opens.

Now is i rename the link as http://www.<3rdpartywebsitename>/forms/Ch3125.pdf
the new version of the file opens. (add www opens the new file)

Now this is happening only in some machine with my network computers. I deleted the temp Internet FOLDER also
but nothing seems to happen. Always the older version of the file opens.

In the machine where it is working fine there is no difference in adding the to the URL. The correct file always
opens. I am confused as to why this is happening. There should be no difference if i add www to the URL or not.
Your help will be truly appreciated. Please me know if you need any information.
Is this related with the cache..This problem seems to be happening to only some machine within my office network.
The 3rd party site where the files are hosted there is only 1 version of the file.
ThanksSounds very much like a cache issue.  Are you using any internet accelerators or 3rd party download software?  Are you an AOL user?I am using IE 6.0..It seems a cache issue but cant figure it out...also under the temp interne files folder i have 2 references of the PDF file with different last modified date and url. One URL has www and the other doesnt
I am not using an internet accelerators or 3rd party software(And you don't use AOL?)

There you are then.  Cache problem.  Delete both files from the temporary internet folder, and you'll get the right one next time.  Or at the web server end, change the modification time of the PDF file.  Or if you're using a scripting language, get it to send a prama no cache HTTP HEADER prior to the PDF download.

Solve : my friends IE is different?

Answer»

my friends IE is different than normal it has a plain white background and the font is really big. im going to attach a screen shot of it.Have your friend load up IE and choose one of the following:

1. Hold down Crtl key and roll the mouse wheel from top to bottom until happy with the size

2. View==>Text Size and choose a SMALLER size

Hope this helps.  8-)

And if that is not enough try this in IE:

1. Start

Kudos to Raptor and Fedthat was the first thing i did
If anyone figures this out, I would appreciate it too. I got the same thing and XP Help and support looks like this, so does any web link accessed from a CHM file. This is a new XP setup. Computer, sys and OS is only two weeks old.Got it! Somehow Accessability options got CHANGED. I have never used them, but under Control Panel, Accessability options, display -- There was a tick MARK in "Use high contrast COLORS". I unchecked this and IE, Help and support, etc. were back to normal. Totally screwed up my desktop colors though. Went from Windows Green background to Navy blue. Almost black. With black icon lettering, this required some tinkering. Icons were larger also. The text under some overlapped it's neighbor. Makes me think Active Desktop and accesssability options got their reciepes mixed up.

Solve : Re: sata hard drive?

Answer»

Look in Device Manager under hard drives and see what is shown there.IN THE DEVICE MANAGER UNDER HARDWARE ,IT SAYS  ACPI MULTI PROCESSES PCTurn off the Caps Lock key and then look under Disk Drives. Take your time.still cant find anything LIKE sata under driverts, it just says ACPImulti processer??....sYou are looking in the wrong place then.

Let's try something else. Download and run Belarc Adviser (free at www.belarc.com) Look on the left side near the top and it will identify your hard drive by manufacturer and model number.HI THERE , I HAVE D/LOADED BELARC, ITS EXCELLENT , THE ONLY TIME I SEE THE ACRONYM SATA IN BUS ADAPTERS , IT SAYS "VIA SATA RAID CONTROLLER, IS THAT THE EVIDENCE TO SAY THAT MY PC HAS A SATA DRIVE ,CHEERSLook under hard drive and see the manufacturer and model number. Then look it up on the hard drive MAKER's site or post it here. We have been at thie waaaaaay to LONG already.  You should also scan your computer for the 'CAPS LOCK VIRUS'.
Online Virus Scan and Spyware Scan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm^ lol. but i understand how frustrating it is to have a problem that just wont go away. i had to wait 2 weeks for my brand new comp to work, then 3 days later the HD died. man i was pissed.

Norton is expensive, but a lot of newbies LIKE it because it is easy to set up and you don't have to KNOW what you're doing. If you are in that position go ahead. There are other products as WELL. Windows firewall is OK, but not as full featured or SECURE as the standalone products. I personally don't use Norton stuff, but a lot of people do.I'd say norton is better than xp sp2 firewall, But my router has a built in firewall and i use zonealarm using these keeps most THINGS out.
