Solve : Internet Explorer directs me back to previous page?

Answer»

Would really appreciate it if anyone has any advice on the following problem which is really annoying me with Internet Explorer at the moment.
When in any webpage after a few seconds I am redirected back to the previous page every single time. If i click on a link in a webpage it will take me to that link, but only for a few seconds before it sends me back.
Also when I click on the Start button at the bottom left of the SCREEN it appears very briefly then disappears unless I keep the left mouse button held down.
I think I have a virus on my computer but have Antivirus software saying it is clean.

Any ideas?

Many Thanks

KevinWhat antivirus are you using and is it up to date?
Are you also using antispyware?
When did this start happening?
Did you CHANGE anything before this problem began?I have Norton Antivirus and it is in date. I think I have some sort of SPYWARE virus, it constantly brings up a red box at the bottom right of my screen.
It started happening on Saturday and I havent knoingly changed anything at all.

I originally got a serious virus on my computer a few months ago where my antivirus had expired. A friend REPLACED the hard drive and reinstalled windows on my computer and everything was fine. Had this spyware (red box) for a few weeks now)
Try posting in the viruses and spyware thread, as this is a problem with viruses and spyware
You'll get more attention from people there, attention from experts on viruses etc
They'll be able to help youAnd I will go AHEAD and lock this thread.

Solve : IE Diverting to Advert Pages?

Answer»

Hi there,
I have a problem with IE. :-?
The problem started with IE6.When I click on an IE search result,I am diverted to what appears to be an advertising page.If I click back and then click on the result again I get the page I want.
This is more annoying than anything else.
I have dowloaded(sucessfully) IE7,in the hope that by OVERWRITING IE6 the problem would be solved, but it is still there.
I should add I have tried Ad Aware,Lavasoft,Spybot, etc and NORTON Virus, but without any success.
So far the problem seems to be restricted to IE,If I use my ISP's own browser there is no problem.
Any help or suggestions would be most welcome.cwshredder

Solve : how do I copy emails from disc to OE??

Answer»

:- I saved emails onto a dvd-r , bought a new computer, and now battling to get my OLD emails into my new inbox. Anybody help? So, you have .dbx files on your DVD, right? Exactly, what technique have you tried? Are you using OE 6?YES, OE 6.
Tried the obvious copy and paste, send to,......manage to copy the folder from the disc to My Documents but still can't get it to OE inbox. I emailed the folder to myself but it came thru as an attachment and still can't open the attachment - when asked "open as" I had to browse for OE but it doesn't open the folder (using windows xp) - there must be an easy way! Tried Import from OE inbox but only OFFERS to import from other OE type programs...
Any ideas?PS: yes dbx files on the dvdTry this. Put the .dbx files wherever you want to permanently keep them on your hard drive. I would create a folder outside of My Documents, but that's up to you. Open OE and go to Tools, Options, Maintenance, and CLICK on the Store Folder button. Click on Change, and change that to the folder where your .dbx files are located. Click OK and close out of OE. Open OE again and see if your messages now appear in Inbox.

By the way, in your old computer, did you add folders in OE, or were you only using the standard Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items, ETC.?Success! Many thanks Soybeen.
Yes, I did have other folders, copied each one separartely. Suspect I could create new folders in my new OE and then move their store too?Have to sign off now - seem to have got my other folders working in the same folder.
Thanks for your help, Soybeen

Solve : Random Access Memory??

Answer»

How do I find out how much RAM my laptop has? Its not reading my DVD's very well or playing them very well eather? abagarcia....... Quote

Its not reading my DVD's very well or playing them very well eather?
this is a rather contradictory statement ....... It either reads them or it doesn't and it either plays them or it doesn't ......perhaps you could explain exactly what you mean .
How much ram is installed ...... well click Start/Contol panel/ System ........then click the General tab ....... you will see .........
SYSTEM :........... bla , bla , bla

Registered to : bla , bla , bla

Computer : the last part will show you how much ram is installed

dl65
I will try that....do you KNOW how much RAM you need to be able to play a DVD?To play a DVD you need a media player, it does not require much memory at all. UNLESS you really don't have much at all (< 256mb). If the DVD is playing slow there might be other issues on the computer.I can play DVD's fine on a laptop with 128 meg RAM and Windows 98. XP however can be jerky with 256 or less if an onboard graphics ADAPTER is used rather than a card with separate video memory.

How about sharing what you have and the specific problems? We can go from there. 128 mg. of RAM is enoff to play any DVD/CD on a laptop. Your Problem lies somewhere eles. Most onboard Video Cards are hopeless. I suggest you buy a cheap video card. you can pick em up for $60.Div that might work if he was using a DESKTOP, but laptop's are not Easy to upgrade

I would check in Task manager to see home many Programs are using up you ram, you may find it simply because you have to many task's runningThe laptop with 128 RAM that palys DVD's fine has an 8 meg. video adapter. That's really all you need with Win 98 or 2000. XP needs more. We will await the original poster's return. It's been 3 days so maybe he is coming back, maybe not.

Someone please help. Running IE 6, for some reason my computer has started closing web pages if i request an additional page? eg, if i'm reading my MSN e-mails and want google open, i would hit the IE logo in the bottom left quick LAUNCH bit(?) and ANOTHER page would open. Now it opens but closes my old page

Sure this must be an easy fix, but as you can tell very much a Newbie.

It took you 10 minutes to go to Panda and perform the online virus scan, then reset IE to it's defaults.
I don't believe you. To open each browser session in a new window,

Click on Tools/Properties/Advanced tab.....Un-check where it says

"[] Reuse windows for launching shortcuts"

Click on [OK] at the bottom.

My 2½¢Cheers so far, but still no luck??

Fed, thanks for the trust, found an old forum answer which stated the same reponse and had already tried it.

Do i need to reboot after adjusting any of the Advanced options?

Cheers guys,

any other ideas would be gratly recived.

Thanks again I'm not a very trusting person.
IE will warn you if it requires a re-start after a change.
Resetting the defaults should have done the trick so this is now turning into a mystery.
Are you sure you're doing it right? Will have another look at it all, Have now run Panda, Spybot, and a full F-Secure system check, found a couple of things cleared them all off. Will go and check the defaults again.

Update poss later.

Thanks
Have gone round the whole thing again, still no luck? :-?

Really starting to bug me now, PLEASE HELP ME.

Solve : POSTDATA problem??

Answer»

Hi,

For the past 3 weeks or so i have been UNABLE to log into hotmail, sign onto msn MESSENGER and purchase anything over the internet from the usual online shops; play.com etc. I have run all the usual anti spyware programs: spybot, ad aware and avast antivirus aswell as disk cleanup, defrag, and removing cookies/temporary internet files. i have a hp pavilion computer windows xp sp2, 2.80ghz 512mb ram. I cant remember for sure but i think the problem stems from me fiddling with the internet connection settings - which services use the internet for example. i think these were things like printer sharing service and .net passport network, which i think is linked to the hotmail and msn problem.

does anyone have a solution or encountered this problem before?

thanksHere's a start:

Kudos to Raptor and Fed.Go on, what settings exactly did you fiddle with? Certainly the .NET passport STUFF will be related to MS site security.

Have you tried using a different browser? If you're using IE, you should change it anyway. Try Firefox, Opera, Slimbrowser or Maxthon.hi, i tried the online security test and it identified around 30 spywares, all of which were cookies. i have cleared all pivate data in firefox and also followed the advice for IE, but the problem still stands. i fiddled with the settings for:

Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
Client for Microsoft Networks

Currently, they are all enabled (ticked), is this correct?

The problem seems to be with submitting data; transactions and logging into the hotmail account although i can still log into my yahoo account. Seems very strange. In addition, after running spybot, i found a piece of spyware named something like Disable.Microsoft.Firewall, which i removed but it turns up on every scan.

Thanks for help so farSounds like you are not completely free of malware I'm afraid. As my good friend GX1_Man would say, until that point, all bets are off.

Would you be averse to a reformat-reinstall? Starting with a clean slate is helpful, therapeutic and cures most woes (other than the woe of running MS Windows itself).looks like a dead end then?

As an intermediate computer user, i tend to experiment quite alot, after all its the best way to learn, but obviously it can lead to situations like these where there is no way out but a clean wipe of the hard drive.

I've been thinking of getting an external hard drive, to store my music and films on (as i have more than 30gb worth; too much to back up on dvds), what are the pros and cons of this, eg would any viruses be able to get onto the external hd and how easy is it to update the hd with data (would it be drag and drop like a flash drive?)

CheersQuote

Not necessarily, but I would take the line of least resistance; i.e. reformat.

Quote

Yes. Minimise your risk by practising safe surfing. Reputable, up to date anti-malware software; avoidance of P2P networks; safe internet browser and email clients, etc.

Just remember that ALL hard drives die eventually, so not backing up to secure media like CD/DVD's will only postpone, not prevent, a total loss of data. Just a thought. Quote

"Secure media" is the Holy Grail, isn't it? Writeable CD and DVD media is photo-sensitive and hence degrades over time; even if locked in a dark cabinet, you can't expect more that 12 years of validity.Ahh now rob , Ive seen some very long lasting Data Mediums, There's these Rocks Called Ogham, They have Carvings on them that Have lasted Thousands of Years in the Rough Weather of Ireland ^.^

ogham.lyberty.com/oghamintro.html

Did you not post a link a few days ago to a site that showed how long you can Expect CD's to last, i think it said that in Perfect Conditions a cd would last 50 years , if it was a good CD

No; wasn't me.

Interesting. I wonder what are "perfect conditions"? And how many people keep their CD backups in anything approaching perfect conditions? :-/

I think you'll find that those carvings have a certain element of data redunancy; the media size is large compared to the amount of data contained, and the loss of certain molecules of the medium would not necessarily result in data corruption or ambiguity. And although data read speeds may be nanoseconds, data write speeds are unacceptably slow at several HOURS per glyph... ok thanks for all the advice, i'll probably end up reformatting and getting an external hd, as the prospect of my music collection spread over several discs scares me!. In addition, it would be far easier to add the odd album or two to an HD rather than waiting for 4.7gb to burn onto a disk.

Just a few more q's

1. Would an external HD randomly die on me even if i only connected it for 30mins a week just to update?
2. Are there any programs/built in windows features which update your external HD from selected folders when you connect, similarly like an iPod would in iTunes?
3. How often do the more experienced users among you have to reformat because of viruses/spyware? or do you reformat every so often just to start again?

Thanks againI format about Twice a year, i have multiple Disks tho, and usually only format the Windows one.

Disk's Randomly Die... Keep away from Magnets and Dust.

Windows has a Feature Called Offline Folders, it can be used to sync the Contents of a Network Share, I'm sure you could adapt this to you Purpose

or you could google for some Syncing software , there are many options, i have Sync Back on my Office PCQuote

Easier, yes. Safer, depends on what happens when the drive craters.

1. Would an external HD randomly die on me even if i only connected it for 30mins a week just to update?

Random is just that - random. You cannot really predict. Some die soon, some later, but all eventually. Some develop the mysterious RAW format syndrome you see mentioned here for no apparent reason. The drive is still good and can be re-used after it is formatted again, but the data is not retrievable.

Quote
2. Are there any programs/built in windows features which update your external HD from selected folders when you connect, similarly like an iPod would in iTunes?

You can get automatic backups, full or incremental with add on programs, like True Image, but none built in to Windows.

3. How often do the more experienced users among you have to reformat because of viruses/spyware? or do you reformat every so often just to start again?

Once a year at least, just because, BUT I use an imaging program so it only takes about 10 minutes. (True Image again to the rescue.)

Solve : browser unable to support/view websites?

Answer»

Hi all. Yet another newbie here needing help.
I have a problem which didn't seem to occur previously but is now causing a
lot of inconvenience for me. I'm running XP on a Toshiba notebook I think
IE5. Whenever I use websites that require me to fill-in forms/register (most
recent examples include applying for a new bank account and a yahoo! email
address) I complete the fill-in forms/registration and when I click on
complete/OK (usually after at least 10 minutes of form-filling!) my browser
just totally closes, like disappears as though I've clicked on the red x in
the top right CORNER. Basically I can't complete transactions and
registrations.

I really have no idea what's causing this but it's becoming as real pain. I
can't even sign into my university email account from home. A friend told me
it had something to do with my java or ActiveX settings, but they're at
default. Reading the microsoft pages the symptoms are similar to those
outlined in an article about the 832894 (MS04-004) security update in which
critical update 831167 is CITED as a resolution. I really can't figure this
out. I've POSTED on a few forums but nobody seems able to provide a solution.
My cipher strength is 128-bit. I really need to get this resolved as I WORK
from home and this is causing real problems for me.

Any ideas/suggestions hugely appreciated

THANKS for all/any replys in advance
Craig
Update Windows. Do you have SP2?

Update IE to the latest version.

Run Spyware/virus scans in safe mode with system restore turned off.

Post back here with the results.

Solve : Mshtml.dll error?

Answer»

I can't click on any links so I can't even get into microsoft's community forum becasue when I click on links my page freezes. I was using IE6 and thought by installing 7 would help but it seems worst. I get this error when I try to register this file, mshtml.dll was loaded but the DLL registry server entry point was not found, can't be registered. How do I fix this?Scan you scan for Viruses and Spyware?

If you have allready done so, what have you used?

You should use FIREFOX in the future.I just did a system restore from yesterday which had my IE6. I then went and register all those files like this regsvr32 urlmon.dll and etc. The mshtml.dll worked this time. I was wondering if the IE 7 caused it? I'm using Panda Interent Security suite 2007 trial to see if I like it. I was using CA E Trust but thier new version of the firewall I didn't like. The Panda uses more programs on startup but if it's better I guess I can live with it.Quote

Could be, people forget that its still in its BETA stage. It seems to be causing a lot of problems and it's not safe to try out because Internet Explorer is an integral part of WINDOWS..I did this: RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem in Internet Explorer, follow these steps: 1. Quit all programs that are RUNNING.
2. Click START, and then click Run.
3. Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and then click OK.
4. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK.
If this does not resolve the problem, repeat steps 2 through 4 for each of the following files (in step 3, replace Urlmon.dll with each of the file names below): • Shdocvw.dll
• Actxprxy.dll
• Oleaut32.dll
• Mshtml.dll
• Browseui.dll
• Shell32.dll

The problem was in IE7. I installed IE7 again the problem came back so now I'm back to IE6
Like I said, IE is an integral part of Windows and you just can't be bothered using BETA versions.

I'd suggest switching to Firefox and leaving IE for what it is - worthless.

Solve : Explorer Windows?

Answer»

I have windows XP with security Pack 2. My Internet Explorer will NOT open multiple windows. I have read previous posts on this & tried every TIP POSSIBLE....INCLUDING going to TOOLS - INTERNET OPTIONS- ADVANCE TAB & unchecking "reuse windows for launching short cuts". Any more suggestions?Yes, DITCH Internet Explorer and get Firefox

I've thought about FireFox however. I have been told that certain websites do not support the Firefox WEB browser. Was also thinking about downloading the new IE 7 . Any comments on either?Just do a google for IE7 problems and you'll get lot's of reactions on it...

I have yet to see a page that won't load properly in FireFox...the ones that don't i probably have no use for anyways.

You will however still need IE for Windows updates since Gates is still such a control freak.

Internet Explorer does not adhere to certain standards, therefore certain poorly written pages will display in Internet Explorer but will not look as good in Firefox.

These webpages are often made by amateurs with tunnelvision when it comes to cross-browser compatability. You won't encounter many of them, I haven't seen any at all now that Firefox has gained widespread fame.

Solve : IE6 Font Style?

Answer»

My OS is Windows 98SE. I am USING IE v6. The question is: How to make the the prints on a web page into BOLT style or make it darker so that it can be read with ease?
Go to Tools > Internet options.

On the General tab, click the "FONTS" button at the bottom. You can't make it bold, but you can make it anything else you want.

NOTE: Any webpage with a specific font will OVERRIDE your choice. It only works on pages that do not specify a particular font.

Solve : Internet crashes everytime i get a pop-up?

Answer»

This PROBLEM started yesterday and i can't seem to find what the problem is. Every time i get a pop-up or when i click something and it opens in a new window my internet comes up with the notice to send error report or dont send thing i sent it once. i have a pop-up blocker and i get the occasional pop-up here and there. I have windows defender and i scanned for viruses and it didn't find ANYTHING. I have IE 6, and my computer is window xp. and help would be greatly appreciated.Lot's of folks have been reporting that in the last few days. Unsure if this is a Microsoft update problem (do you have it set to auto update?), a phase of the moon, random occurrence or what.

Try Firefox as this may have much more to do with IE.

I would also try the PANDA ONLINE scanner:

Could you try uninstalling the most recent patches?

Sometimes I wonder if Windows Update is more trouble than it's worth. :-/

Solve : IE is grouped with Windows Explorer in XP?

Answer»

Hi,
I have this wired problem. I am using Windows XP SP2 with LATEST updates. I have enabled "Group similar taskbar BUTTONS" from Taskbar properties. Earlier I used to have Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer in different Groups in Taskbar. But, all of a sudden (I DONT remember what exactly have I CHANGED), IE and windows explorer come under the same group in the taskbar. Please suggest me how do I get back the original behavior.

thanks,
-manirupTry this simple technique. DISABLE "Group similar taskbar buttons" and verify that Windows behavior has changed accordingly. Then re-enable "Group similar taskbar buttons".Already tried this. doesn't help.

Solve : IE Downloads Never Finish!?

Answer»

Everytime I go to download a video off of a Web site (any video type at all), the IE download box comes up and starts downloading. Downloads over 100MBs never finish. It always gets to about 40% to 50% complete and then the "estimated time left" and "transfer rate" just stops. The top picture with the internet icon transferring files to a folder is still moving but everything else just stops and never finishes. I can try to restart and download again but I get the same results everytime, sometimes it will stop working even sooner.

I have a broadband connection and am using IE 7--though this has happened with IE 6 also--and I have Norton ANTIVIRUS but I always disable it as well as WINDOWS Firewall when I am about to download.

I'd really appreciate it if anyone could help me with this problem that's been going on for a while. Quote

..........

What version of Norton are you using?

You should scan for Viruses and spyware.

Kudos to the CH fella's for keeping it safe. THANK you for replying back and HELPING me out. I have standard Norton AntiVirus 2005. I tried everything you SAID but I'm still having trouble finishing the downloads .

Is there any way to end the process of Norton AntiVirus? My OS is Windows XP. I unistalled Norton a while ago because it was disrupting so much stuff and I think it solved my problem. It won't let me exit out of Norton AntiVirus completely, only disable certain parts of it. I'd like to be able to end the whole process without unistalling the program from my computer and leaving myself unprotected.

When I bring up the Windows Task Manager, Norton AntiVirus is under "processes" but I don't know which file name it could be.

Anybody have any other ideas?Uninstall it completey and install AVG Free (Anti-virus) and Adaware SE (Anti-spyware)

You can't really disable Norton, it always seems to keep bothering you.my simple solution, get firefox, much better than IE, tabbed browsing, scripting, and pausable downloads. I love it.

Firefox is HERE!

this is my easier solution, the others work as i had the same problem, firefox sorted it but on me other comp i stuck wit IE for a while, muckin bout with antiviruses works aswell but isn't as effectiveThanks for the help guys.

I have Firefox as well as IE, and the problem seems to persist even using Firefox's download manager. I'll look into AVG and finally get around to unistalling Norton. Norton really can be a pain in the [smiley=lipsrsealed.gif].

[smiley=dankk2.gif]ahh ok, have you tried pausing the download when it stops, closing all Firefox windows, reopening and continuing? that could be a temporary solution, if not mabey reboot and continue, or pause and carry on another day?DLoad and run the tool below...

Norton Removal Tool

1) Use Add Remove Programs first and un-install Norton...
2) From Windows Explorer search for any folders named Norton and Symantec and delete them...
3)DLoad and install ERUNT and have it make a backup of your registry...
4) Open regedit and type Norton in the search bar. Delete all entries it finds. F3 takes you to the next i instance of Norton. Continue til you have reached the end of the registry...
5)Repeat the above process using Symantec instead in the search field. Delete any Symantec keys it finds...
6)Now run the Norton Removal tool you DLoaded...
7)Empty the recycle bin...
8)Go to My Computer and right clik the C: drive and select Properties and run disk cleanup...
9)Re-boot and run disk defrag....

There you're done !

See how easy Symantec makes it for you to dump their product ? ?

patio. 8-)...I'm back

I did everything you guys said. I unistalled Norton, downloaded AVG, and I'm trying to download the videos off of Firefox instead of IE. The progress just seems to keep being interupted by something. I tried pausing it and closing everything else down then resuming it. It won't even start back up when I do though.

Can anyone think of anything else that could be wrong? My internet connection is good. I don't seem to have any trouble with anything besides this.Does your ISP have a download limit? I would find that unlikely with broadband, but you have to cover all of the bases. Who is it? Have you checked with them about known issues? You might try opening Task Manager / start a download / watch TM to see what processes are operating and locate the excessive app

Alan <>< It could be a tcp/ip keep alive issue.

origin can be at the pc, router, dsl modem, or isp. I would start at my software firewall settings and move up the ladder from there.

to modify the os registry settings for tcp/ip:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314053

look for the keepAlive settings:

Make sure to backup the registry before starting this tweak (create system restore point).

Sorry I didn't respond back to your suggestions in a few days; I've been out of town.

Thanks for the advice, patio . I finally got ALL of Norton out off my computer, but,
unfortunately the problem still exists.

I don't think my ISP has a download limit. I have Comcast. I should've specified this earlier
but I didn't think of it--I am only having trouble downloading large files out of
IE. I can download anything as big as I want easy from torrents and other P2P programs.
It's just downloads that have to come through IE (and Mozilla Firefox, for that matter).

ale52, I only know what roughly half of the processes that are running on startup do.
Could I list the processes running while I'm downloading and someone be able to tell me
the likely culprit?

Thanks again for the responses guys.Enable your firewall then try downloading.

Solve : IE only opens in safe mode?

Answer»

Ever since I downloaded MOZILLA Firefox to give it a try, I've had nothing but trouble with my Internet Explorer, which I want to go BACK to using. It OPENS up fine in Safe Mode, but otherwise I can see it in the taskbar at the bottom only and then have to click on restore so I can see it properly. Reinstalling isn't an option because I don't have my Windows XP Pro disk. I've tried using scannow and Registry Mechanic and I've also ran SPYWARE checks with Ad-Aware and virus scans with Kaspersky Internet Suite. Please help, it's driving me crazy!First of all: why of why do you want to go back to Internet Explorer? Next you'll be telling us you're going to remove all the locks from your doors!

Secondly though: the problem is probably due to a tiny window size or odd location for IE. You can fix this! Right-click on the IE button on the task bar and then choose size. Then use the ARROW KEYS on your keyboard to resize the window (which obviously you won't be ABLE to see, initially). Alternatively, right-click and choose move; again use the arrow keys until IE comes back into view. If it's off screen, it's usually to the bottom or right, so use the up or left keys.

Hope this helps.Quote

Solve : IE Crashes Much More Often!?

I have had more IE crashes this weekend on my Windows boxes around the house than I have had in the last 2 years? Anyone else having this pleasure? After the latest Windows Update I did last week...I started experiencing a lot of IE crashes.

I did a cleanup of my system...REMOVED unwanted programs...ran my registry cleaner and the crashes have since disappeared.

Did yours start occurring right after your most recent Windows Updates?YES, and I imaged the boot drive back and it stopped briedfly, probably until I got the last round of updates.

Let's see what others report.Hi GX1_Man ...... I received the 9 updates a few days ago and apart from the sudden disappearance of the hide icon BUTTON , I havent noticed anything out of the ordinary . My second machine TOOK the updates without any issue ...and the third one is shut down right now as I am pulling a dvd drive out of it to put into machine number 2 .

dl65 Sorry to hear your issue GX1_Man. I don't use IE except for Windoze updates and on 1 other site. Other than that I use only Firefox.

Hope you get it resolved as you and the other moderators are a great asset to this community

Alan <>< Uninstall the most recent update, turn off automatic updates and do update selectively. MS is slipping some crap in through auto update and it does cause problems. It may very well be a patch issued earlier this month:

Solve : Saving web content to read offline?

Answer»

Hi

How do i save websites and there content, so that i can read it offline using internet Explorer.Click on Bookmark > Add Bookmark.

Check "Make available offline".

If needed, customize with the Customize... button.

You'll still need to open IE to view it... but it'll work offline (if you're in offline mode). You can also just use File, Save As, in IE. However, if you want to LATER SYNCHRONIZE, i.e., update that offline WEB page, I believe the procedure posted by DILBERT is best.To copy large sections of websites, you can use HTTrack. Find a link to it in the SOFTWARE FAQ (see my signature).

Solve : IE Autocomplete Dropdown menu?

Answer»

Don't stop me if you've heard this one before...

I looked around the forum and didn't find ANYTHING that fixed my problem. Hoepfully you guys can help me out.

My version of IE 6.0 for some reason won't clear some URLs that I've either typed in, or searches I've done on google.com.

They're really weird things to hold onto as well. One is a random link on 411mania.com (a sports/movies website). I'd like to use that AUTOCOMPLETE function, but find out a way to clear out the old URLs. I've tried cclean, and I've tried simply "Clear History" in tools.

Any ideas? Are you free from malware? WHat are you using? In safe mode with system restore turned off?

Sorry, new to this.

I'm using WinXP. Not sure what malware is. And no, I'm not in safe mode, and I do have system restore on.

I'd hate to do a restore and lose a bunch of stuff. But, if I have to I guess...Quote

No, you didn't understand. Malware includes virus, spyware and trojans. WHat are you using forprotection.

No scan is done correctly unless you boot into safe mode (F8 when the computer starts, before the WIndows logo).

If you do this without System Restore turned off, there is a chanvce that you can just reinfrect yourself. This does not affect your data.

Solve : Internet Explorer Won't Open Automatically?

Answer»

I have Windows XP and a dial-up Internet connection. When I connect to the Internet, Internet Explorer doesn't open automatically. I have to open it manually by clicking on the desktop IE icon. I had Windows 98SE on another COMPUTER that has since broken beyond repair, and each time I connected to the Internet, IE opened automatically and immediately. I have looked at Tools-Internet Options-Advanced Tab and I don't see an option for SETTING IE to open automatically upon connecting to the Internet. Does anyone KNOW how I can correct this? Thanks for your replies. If you open IE .... click on tools/Internet options/connections make sure you have ticked..... dial whenever a network connection is not present. Then click apply and ok....... Now whenever you startup, click on the IE shortcut and it will dial up and your connected.

dl65 You can also go to the same place as dl65 recommends and choose "Always dial my default connection".

Alan <>< This actually MIGHT be a good thing...if you think about it.

patio. 8-)Quote

This actually might be a good thing...if you think about it.

patio. 8-)

I'd be careful with that, sometimes it acts up and goes into 'work in offline mode' and it'll show you cached pages and you'll spend a few minutes wondering why you can surf the Internet but not be dialed in.

Man, I hate dial-up. Allowing IE to dial a connection is not safe, a rogue website can DROP your connection and give IE a 'new' number to dial, usually at premium rates and you don't find out until you get your next phone bill.

Solve : Internet keeps freezing?

Answer»

For the past 5 DAYS or so, my Internet has been locking up. I use Firefox, but tried it in Internet Explorer and again, same thing.

More specifically, this is what happens:

I go online, go to any page, such as my college's web site, and browse. Then suddenly it'll freeze and say "Not responding" at the top of the page. I wait for about 20 seconds and it will resume as usual. A few minutes later, it'll do the exact same thing over again and this goes on until I close the net.

I've tried EVERYTHING I can think of...virus scanned using 6 different programs, I've tried different wireless networks, nothing works.

Some details...I use Windows XP, I am on a laptop (ASUS A3H, just bought it in May) using wireless (been using it for 3 years), and my ISP is Sympatico.

Can anyone help me figure out why this problem keeps occuring? I am enrolled in an online course at college, so it's pretty important that I can get this working again. Unfortunately, due to it being Thanksgiving today, nobody is open.

Thanks a lot.

What scanners have you used?

What have they found?

Does it happen with other programs as WELL?You mention virus scanning...how about spyware?

One thing you might try is OPENING Task Manager (right-click the task bar and choose Task Manager & open the Processes tab), open your browser, go to a page, then check what's happening in TM.

Alan <>< I've done spyware scanning as well.

The scanners I've used include:

Norton Internet Security 2006 (Found 0 results)
SpyBot: Search & Destroy (Found some tracking cookies which I DELETED)
Swat It! Professional v2.1 (Found 0 results)
Spy Sweeper (Found 0 results)
Spyware Doctor (Found 0 results)
And a few online scanners, one of which I'm using right now, called Kaspersky.

I also used HijackThis! and got a log which I am waiting for it to be analyzed.

I have called my ISP and the place for the router, however no luck. They just told me to DISCONNECT my Internet and reassigned me a new wireless network but the problem still occurs.

And no, it's just the Internet that this happens with. I thought maybe it was my browser at first (Mozilla Firefox), however I tried using IE, and the same problem occurs. No other program (such as Microsoft Word, or even MSN Messenger) gives me this freezing problem, just when I am specifically browsing the Internet.

Oh and say I was on MSN messenger. I'll be talking to a friend, and have Firefox open in the background. Well suddenly it'll freeze on its own. I don't even need to be browsing it for it to freeze.

EDIT: Okay, my one online virus scanner just finished and apparently I got this:

The scan is complete.
Attention, your computer is infected!
The following infected files/objects were found during the scan:

Backdoor.Win32.IRCBot.dd

Total number of scanned files: 52427
Number of viruses found: 1
Number of infected objects: 1
Number of suspicious objects: 0
Duration of the scan process: 00:45:32

How do I remove this? Is Norton updated and fully operational?

You should scan in safe mode.

If I were you, I'd try AVG Free, though.

Solve : GOOGLE problem.!!!?

when I do a 'GOOGLE' search..there's a drop down with all the SEARCHES I have done, !.. how can I stop this.. or, how can I delete them.. ?? thanks.

[emailprotected]This is the AutoComplete facility in Internet Explorer, presumably. Are some of your searches rather - er - incriminating?

You can switch it off. Tools-->Internet Options-->Advanced.ccleaner should delete them for you http://www.ccleaner.com
What are the addresses? Both those things dont work...
I love google!

http://www.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=465You will need to restart IE after running ccleaner.Nope. Ive done it a million times. Never worked for me and still refuses too. If you go to that site THOUGH, it will tell you how to completly remove the auto forms. Its sweet.

Though I could have some option that is supposed to be unselected that is causing it to not work. Ive ALWAYS had EVERYTHING selected on it though. That's strange, where are you searching from, the google page, the IE address bar or a google toolbar? The google page. Even if you have the toolbar, it doesnt matter. You CANT do any searches from the address bar. *searches* meaning searching for something that is unkown. When you type something into the address search, its going directly to the address. I dont know if you can really consider that a search.I MUST have something set in my browser to 'not remember' google searches, I never see a dropdown.
You can search from the IE address bar. IE>Tools>Internet Options>Advanced
Ccleaner sure does remove searches from the google toolbar.Oh, well thats conveniant. To bad I use Opera. I cant do that with opera. Or I dont know how too. (Talking about the search feature within the address bar.I never use it to search from the IE address bar because you loose the page you were on.
I search from a google toolbar search thingie, it creates a new page for the reults. Thanks for trying to help. I have been into internet options >> advanced.. but dont know which box to uncheck or check !! by the way I am searching from the Google search,.. not the tool-bar or address bar.. I thought the address bar had to have http://www in front.. which is an adress. or am I wrong here.? fact remains I still have the problem, and have thought about the ccleaner,.. but rather have the facility stopped, so I don't have to delete again and again. There must be a check-box in advanced which I have to change.?
THANK FOR HELPING... TalismanTry IE>Tools>Internet Options>Content>Auto Complete--->My 3 boxes are unticked.thanks to you all.. PROBLEM SOLVED.. for your information.. FED'S did the trick..

thanks Talisman..

I guess it was something I set in my own IE a long time ago, I don't even remember seeing the Google page with a drop down menu.
Keep ccleaner, it is a good program, much faster than disk cleanup.

The HIGH range ports aren't reserved for a particular application, so you will FIND that several different SERVICES may use this port. From my brief search, I found the following users of this port:

 • ShixxNOTE
 • RemotelyAnywhere
 • Peer2Peer Radio
 • Callbook
plus a whole host of trojans.

In future a Google search such as "port 2000" will turn up some answers for you. And >here< is a particularly useful resource.

Hello
How can i force ie open new SITES in new window?
I cant even do CTRL+v to open another window - ie open home poge at the old page.
I keep loosing information and its realy bugs me.
Pls helpUse Firefox and experience tabbed browsing.

Get Firefox(CLICK)

CTRL + V is paste, CTRL + N is a new window. So no wonder it didn't work. To open new windows instead of reusing the open window,

At the top of your screen, click on Tools/Internet Options/Advanced tab.

Scroll down a ¼ of the way and UN-Check the line that says - -

[] Reuse windows for launching shortcuts

Click on [OK] at the bottom.

My 2½¢elana...... You might try this .......... You have a IE window open to whatever ....and you wish to keep it open and open up a new IE window ..... So SIMPLY minimize the page you were looking at and click on the the IE shortcut on your desktop and a new IE window will open ....then you will still have your first page available . You can do this as often as you wish and have numberous differant pages open ...... If you use the back button , the page you had open will close .

dl65 You can also right click on a link and select Open in New Window.

And, regarding dl65's suggestion about just clicking on the IE desktop icon to open a new window, you can do that without having to minimize your open windows by adding a Quick Launch toolbar and then putting an IE icon on the toolbar.OR Hold "Shift and Click"

Shift Click = open in new window

Okay, so I have volunteered to help my friend with her computer issues and I'm stumped. She just got the internet at her house... her LAPTOP had never been on the internet before. The FIRST time she TRIED to connect after getting DSL, the page couldn't be displayed. The only way they can connect is in safe mode. It can't be a virus b/c it had never been on the internet before. It can't be the router b/c they had it replaced. Thoughts?Quote

Famous last words, did she have protection installed before she went on the net?Does she have a 3rd party firewall installed...like Zonealarm or Sygate? If so, turn it off to see if that's the problem.

Well, she'd better have some firewall running, at least Windows Firewall. Going online with a broadband, i.e. DSL, connection without firewall protection can lead to MALWARE INFESTATION very quickly.

Solve : Slow internet after download?

Hi guys,

Recently, my internet has been going 10 times slower (literally) than normal. This has happened pretty much immediately after downloading a rather large computer game demo. I've now deleted that demo but the net, if anything, has not improved, indeed, it's probably even slower!

Do you have any suggestions for improving this situation?

Cheers,
Tommy.Probably picked up some viruses and spyware. What protection are you using?

See below. Thanks for the reply GX1,

Right now I'm protected by Symantec Antivirus Client and also perform occasional scans with Adaware SE and SPYBOT search+destroy. I've got Zone Alarm Pro as well, but usually shut that down immediately after startup. yeah, that's it... the comp itself apparently has 1 GB ram and the net speed is 100mbpersecond (???so it claims).

tom100Mbps is your LAN speed, not WAN (Internet).

How do you 'define' slow?

What OS are you using?Raptor, I REALLY like that "Run The Kill" signature line. Quote

So, no firewall protection? Why are you doing that?

I suggest you run CCleaner to clean out some remnants of that game demo. Then, visit www.dslreports.com and run a speed test and tweaks test. If that game demo changed some settings in your system that affected your Internet connection speed, the tweaks test may HELP fix that.Quote

That's weird. Either I didn't post my message or it got deleted. I vote the FORMER because I generally kick serious *censored*.

Anyhow, I knew that the phrase 'Run the kill' had potentional. Just like 'All your BASE are belong to us'

RUN TEH KILL! We should turn it into a marketing stunt, make banners, t-shirts, etc.

"XIAO says.. RUN THE KILL!"Empty the browser's cache and as Raptor says...Run The Kill.

Hmm yes formating solves many problems , but its so much more FUN if whilest trying to FIX the computer you REALY screw it up.

Is it any site that has a password , or any site that's on a HTTPS://Quote

I think that may be something wrong with your Windows system.Perhaps that is because of some DLL files was gone. You should set up your Windows system again. And once you have finished setting up,you must run the kill to scan for Viruses and Spyware. I CONSIDER the problem was caused by the Viruses and Spyware possibly.

Run the kill?Sorry! My meaning is the Anti-virus software. Quote

Solve : INTERNET AUDIO PROBLEM... PLEASE HELP!!!!?

ok, i'll try to explain this problem the best i can despite my lack of computer knowledge. basically, i can hear audio fine on all PROGRAMS except for certain websites, like youtube and ebaumsworld. the other programs work ok: itunes, media player, movie maker, ect. i'm thinking mabye this has SOMETHING to do with the microsoft update i did about a week ago when i downloaded something related to CREATIVE SB live. oh, and whenever i try to use the creative recorder, and error message comes us saying a device ID is out of range for your system. i know that these problems are related to corrupt files on my soundcard or something like that. could someone please help?

oh and i've also had quicktime problems lately. it says quicktime is installed but then error messages pop up when i install software saying that it's not WORKING. don't know if this is relevant to the audio stuff... just thought i'd mention it.Quote

You have answered your own question. How about a system restore to a point before you erroneously screwed up an apparently well running system?

Hint - Don't use MS update for ANY device driver besides USB ports, if that is even necessary.Quote

You may want to uninstall the quicktime virus as well. If you want then reinstall it (sigh), but only after the above.

Solve : How to stop websites from controlling your cursor?

Answer»

Does anybody know how to KEEP websites from controlling your CURSOR? For EXAMPLE, you go to yahoo, start quickly typing a new address while yahoo loads, then yahoo fully loads and forces your cursor to their search box. Another example, you go to a website, while you wait for it to load, then the last thing it does it place the cursor in the websites searchbox (after all the advertisements and such have loaded). It's nothing major, just an annoyance.Use Firefox(CLICK). A more secure browser that is just as functional but not as willing as Internet Explorer when it comes to websites being nasty.Quote

Guess it won't hurt to swtich to firefox. I will do just that, of course when I get my computer back to work again. You can turn javascript off in IE (and Firefox), but that will break other things...You may well find you will have the same problem in Fire FOX, its the way those pages are writenQuote

Solve : problems with IE and related files' net access...?

Answer»

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hi all,

my internet connection IS active (when i use firefox i am fully able to access all websites). however, it is ONLY firefox. if i use Internet Explorer, i get an error:

" The page cannot be DISPLAYED
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings. "

...that old faithful. also progs that are tied into IE or the net are not active, such as: outlook express downloads MAIL but does not show graphics in e-mails, weatherbug does not recognize the net connection, bit torrent doesn't work, itunes does not access the music store, music match jukebox does not access the CDDB, and on and on and on. i have seen this happen in the past but only for a day or maybe 2, so i assumed the net was maybe spotty, but this has been a week or more now. any idea how i can re-do it so i go back to being able to access thru IE and related progs?

i recently switched ISPs, now am with Time Warner Cable, but it is a cable connection and there was no user name/pw needed to log on (and firefox connection continues to be fine). so please help me fix IE, or is there a way to have all those programs use the firefox browser in their workings instead?

i am running with windows xp, on a HP pc.

thanks in advance,

bob

Are you FIREWALLED?

Kudos to the CH fella's for keeping it safe.

You may have to remove any Dial-up connections in the 'Connection' tab and tag the option "Never choose a connection"

Your LAN-settings might need to be cleared as well, untag and empty everything unless your new ISP has specifically told you to keep certain settings.
thanks, i will try that when i get home!

i was never told anything at all by my new ISP, that may be part of the problem; the guy came and installed the cable and plugged the modem in, and told me it was ok. i plugged the pc in and the net worked at that point, IE and firefox and everything else. but a couple days later this happened.

anyway, thanks, and i'll check back if i can't fix it with your directions! It used to work?

Do you have the latest Windows updates?

Have you got Anti-virus and anti-spyware software?well i had all that stuff. the LATEST microsoft updates i couldnt get because since the IE was screwy it wouldnt let me download. so now (your stuff worked by the way, thanks) i got a couple new updates and a security fix that i think was new. the problem was with smit-related malware...i had virus-burst and a bunch of those things get in and really screw me up. when i finally got it removed, things were screwy as i described in the first message (everything got set to default in order to run the fixvb program).

i dunno about that stuff, virusburst and all, but the malware was sure tricky. it disguises itself REALLY well, it even showed up in the corner bar when i started in safe mode! but it's finally gone; the only remnant i see is something listed when i go into "Add/Remove Programs" called 'advertisemen' (missing the t as typed here). when i click to remove it now it tells me:

"Error loading C:\WINDOWS\system32\pushow93.dll

The specified module could not be found."

so i assume that nodule was removed when the virus removal prog was run, but i can't figure out how to get that taken off the "Add/Remove" list. either way it is not tied to anything that is running so i am not slowed by it anymore.

i did all the re-setting you suggested and the thing that finally worked was the LAN-reset you MENTIONED at the end. it seems to be that alone, as everything worked as soon as i clicked that off.

thank you again! so why does firefox work when the LAN was on when nothing else did? just curious...Quote

I think Firefox wasn't configured to only handle Dial-up, it probably was able to choose from whatever connection there was available.

If your computer is now a bit of a mess, you should try CrapCleaner(Click)

See you around if you have any more problems.

Solve : clicking links causes ie to not respond?

Answer»

Hi everyone,
Whenever I am using IE, I cannot click on any LINK that will redirect me to another page because it will freeze up and I have to do ctrl-alt-del to end program which is "not responding". It doesnt MATTER what webpage I am on, this happens every time. Also, when IE is open, I am unable to open any other program, not even "my documents", "my pictures"...etc.
I have a very new Dell Dimension 1100, and I dont know what version of IE because it was already installed when I bought the computer.
I dont know much about computers just basic stuff so please forgive me if I have not given enough info.

Thanks for your help in advance.

CindyI would highly recommend you switch web browsers from IE to Firefox. Firefox is a much better, more secure browser. Give it a try a see what you think. Update windows including IE.
