Solve : graphic/avatar issue? |
Answer» Hi I'm a mod on a message board and sometimes we get reports on avatars. Well, I can't see some of them (I see some), and the tech says there's no reason for this. I don't know if this happens on other forums or web sites because no one actually says for me to check it out. I use IE6, nvidia graphics card, XP, um, not sure what else might be needed. I used to play games like DAoC and WoW and never had a problem, so I'm not sure what's up, but suddenly certain applications are disappearing on my computer. I've lost paint and the calculator so far. So, I can't see some avatars on a message board and something is eating applications. No viruses found and I've run several different virus finders. I'm stumped. Do it for me & come back with any findings. Online Virus Scan and Spyware Scan http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm Online Malware Scan http://www.ewido.net/en/Quote something is eating applicationsWhat exactly do you mean by that? I've run Panda, McAfee, and other virus scans and I haven't any viruses. The only thing the malware programs show (which I've also run about four or five) is harmless tracking cookies that I zap instsantly. I'm still at a loss. As for eating applications, that's what I mean. They've gone poof. They're no longer on my system. Not listed on Accessories (or anywhere else) and not found when I do a search. Poof. I don't randomly delete lines of code or muck with my registry. I just delete whaever program I don't use via add/remove (DAoC, Guild Wars, and some other games). I'm not a wiz at computers, but I'm not someone that tries to "tidy" their computer and wipe the OS (I know someone who did that). The graphics on this web site, I'm thinking it's them and not me. I can see some but not others, and I don't get a red X or any other symbol. It's just blank. The Paint and calulator disappearing is something I cannot figure out. Thanks Does anyone else have access to this computer? Applications do NOT disappear on their own. My son sometimes plays Toon Town on it, but I generally START the game for him. He doesn't touch anything else for fear of grounding. He's seven and knows nothing about how my computer works. And I tend to be extremely protective of my machine. Generally, it's just me on it. I check email, play a bit of WoW, go to my boards and MySpace, and tha's about it. Virus up to date, I don't open spam, blah, blah, blah. I'm stumped. At the risk of being repetive, programs do not disappear on their own. Someone or something is removing them. Are you using an up to date firewall? Is our computer part of a network? How do you connect to the internet? When you say the programs have disappeared, do you mean just from the Start Menu? Have you looked on the hard drive (e.g. searched for "paint.exe")? Truly, I'm not stupid when it COMES to computers. I'm very careful with my machine, no one adds or removes programs without me actually doing it. I have two firewalls, everything is up to date, and I've said I've searched and found neither paint nor the calculator. I would have no reason to remove either. So unless one of my dogs is messing with my computer, they went poof. And I believe they probably could because a file needed for puttiing the sound icon in my tray went poof, and I've not installed nor removed software or hardware for that. Microsoft is aware of that problem. I assure you, I know enough about computers to know about firewalls, virus software, malware remover, not to muck with the registry, not to remove anything Microsoft related (basic XP), and all that good stuff. I took a break between the Commodore 64 and my 486 with Win 3.1, but I've been using them steadily since 1996. I install hardware and software on my own, I've installed drivers and an OS several times on built machines, and I take very good care of my computer. Three people live in this house, and one is 7 and he doesn't have the ability to do anything without me, and the other is my husband who knows better to touch anything on my machine. He has two of his own. So, yea, I'm stumped. It's annoying, but nothing major. I'd just hate for the "computer demon" to eat anything else. Oh. I overlooked one other cause: harddrive failure. It seems unlikely that hard drive problems would cause exactly this kind of problem, but it is not completely impossible. Suggest running a full scandisk test (including surface scan). By the way, you didn't answer my question: is (e.g.) Paint just missing from the Start Menu, or has it vanished from the hard drive? On XP, it is normally located at %SystemRoot%\system32\mspaint.exe Not a thing with Paint. I can reinstall it once I find the XP disc, but that is just weird. So, calculator and Paint went poof, the file for my sound went crazy, and for some reason only I have the problem of not seeing avatars if uploaded instead of hosted on TAPS board. Maybe the ghost that kept hiding things from me deleted the stuff. Oh, plus my pop up blocker GETS wonky and sometimes makes me hit ctrl and sometimes it doesn't. I hope it's not my harddrive, but I reckon I better get to backing up. Thanks for the help, I really do appreciate you answering my posts. Hard drives have a way of failing at the worst possible Just kidding. Do that backup. At this stage, a resintallation would not go amiss. Yes, I know that's the default "if all else fails" answer, but I didn't think you'd take me seriously if I suggested calling a priest to exorcise your application-munching PC demon.scarfyrre...... This turning into a very interesting topic . You have never said if you have SP2 installed and all the AVAILABLE updates from M/S ........ Reading your posts, I wonder what else is missing or has gone poof from the accessories folder ........ Could you take a screenshot of your accessories folder and post it for us to see..... This is what mine looks like ........ oops you can't take a screen shot ..... you dont have paint. Have a look and see if any others are missing . dl65 Is that Adobe Reader & Realplayer I see there DL65? Search for mspaint.exe BTW, did you ever run Ewido?Quote Is that Adobe Reader & Realplayer I see there DL65?dl65, remove Adobe Reader 6.0 and install the LATEST version, 7.0.8. Solve : Internet Explorer 6 Error Messages - HELP PLEASE!? |
Answer» I don't claim to be a computer guru but I have built several computers & this is a first. I have a friends older computer I am trying to upgrade. Pentium 11, 400 Mhz, 20 Gig H.D. 320 MB. Ram. I reformatted it several times. I did full & COMPLETE installs everytime not upgrades. I have put ME, 2000 Pro, XP Pro & everyone of them does the same thing. They all get variations of this error message. Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. While running this the computer shuts down & reboots & says One Of Your Disks Needs To Be Checked For Consistency then reboots ?I'd start with a HD diagnostics check, this would be the second one today, they say these things come in threes.I used Seagates online hard drive checker & it was ok. Then I did their file system check & this was the result ? I don't really know what it means or how to fix it ? Like I said everytime I did a reformat & STARTED clean with a full install & it never showed the install failed ? What's crazy is while I was doing these checks was the longest amount of time I have been able to be online without getting the Explorer error message ? Results for volume C: Volume Label: Volume Size: 20.01 GB Some files on the volume are open. This may effect the accuracy of the file system check and result in false errors. The file system contains errors that need to be repaired.Run chkdsk from a command prompt, see what it shows up.I ran it this morning & it checked out fine although the Explorer errors were still popping up when I was trying to open Yahoo e-mail. ? Anything else hardware wise that could CAUSE this ?You could test your RAM with memtest86. The consistancy error can be generated because of the incorrect shutdown so there may be nothing wrong with your HD.THANK YOU FED! I can't believe after a month of frustration, asking everyone that should know on computer junkie websites & Fry's Electronics so called A+ certified techs. including 2 days of wasted time & updates with Microsofts techs. & everyone saying VIRUS! YOU HIT IT ON THE HEAD. BAD RAM! I ran the test, isolated the 1 bad stick & everything is fine now. THANK YOU Sooooooooooooooo MUCH! I have also had similar problems with my brand new P4 3 Gig - 1 gig ram that I built frm scratch. It just does not happen all the time. I tested the ram & boom same thing it's a matched pair of Kingston 2 - 512 mb stcks that came together as a set. I tried them 1 at a time in each slot & one has errors. I will definately check ram from now on anytime there is an Internet Explorer error in the future. Thank again.Your RAM may still be OK, it could just need re-seating. Use a bit of trial & error, one stick at at time. |

Solve : Encoding? |
Answer» I had a problem with text not appearing on web pages. I tracked it down to encoding, but I now have to manually encode every web page, i.e. view/encoding/more/central european. I have both auto select and uni-code (utf-8) ticked but it makes no diference. The encoding tends to be on Western European which gives me no text. This problem occurred after I went on a Portuguese website. Please help - its driving us crazy!Reset Internet Explorer's security and advanced settings or quit using the worthless browser all together: Mozilla Firefox (Click)THANKS for your help. Tried everything you suggested, but still doesn't work. Another problem occurs when we try to ACCESS sites such as online banking, national lottery, etc., the page comes up 'about working offline'. Any other suggestions GRATEFULLY received.Does it happen in Firefox as well or have you not tried that browser? |

Solve : Customizing IE right-click menu? |
Answer» I need an application and I think you can help me. I'm using windows xp and internet explorer and I want to add some functions to my right-click menu. The functions are "copy as bold", "copy as italic", "copy as quote" ETC. I mean, I want to MAKE the selected text bold or italic or quote, only with one click and then paste it in my blog posts, comments etc. as styled this way. In other words I want an automatic function which adds the desired html tags to may copied text. I searhed the web to find such a program but I couldn't find. Can you help me please? Thanks You could program AutoHotKey to do something like this, using keyboard/mouse commands. See the software FAQ for a link (check my signature).I'm AFRAID I'm not soo good at these complex applications. I wish I could find a software that would add these functions only with installation or with some SIMPLE operations. I looked at the pages you mentioned but it seems a bit complex for me. Thank you Mr. Pomeroy. You're welcome, and you're right AHK is rather tricksy. I'm afraid that I don't know exactly how to do what you require, otherwise. Perhaps someone ELSE will - possibly a trip to the programming forum would result in an answer?I wouldn't bother with Internet Explorer, I'm sure there's a Firefox extension out there that allows you to customize the right click menu. |

Solve : Getting rid of IE "Links" tab permanently!? |
Answer» How can I PERMANENTLY get rid of the "Links" link in Internet EXPLORER. It comes standard with IE as a preset link, and I've deleted it about 100 times or more, and it keeps reappearing. How can I make it go away?!! Thanks!IE>Favorites>ORGANIZE Favorites>Highlight the LINKS link and push the delete button.I have done that a million times, the Links thing just keeps appearing over again no matter what I do! It won't go away, I've tried deleting it! Thanks though.I'm fairly sure Links is a standard part of IE. That's why it keeps reappearing when you try to delete it. If you don't want to see it, just right click on an empty part of your IE toolbar area and uncheck Links.Sorry, I should have been more specific! The Links thing seems to be standard with IE. I'm trying to permanently deleting it from my Favorites list. I've tried and it keeps coming back. Thanks!Have a read here: Remove Links Folder in FavoritesGood find Soybean. BTW, I removed my links folder an hour or so ago via Organize Favorites & it hasn't come back yet even after re-starting IE. (I haven't re-booted yet)THANK you for that link, that seems to have resolved the problem (keep your fingers crossed!) Thanks again! It also "removed" MESSENGER too! Completely? Or just the shortcut?Update, my 'links' didn't come back after a re-boot. UPDATE: My LINKS came back this morning, go figure. :-? Don't toy with Microsoft! the solution is very simple........... :oGET FIREFOX The REASON why the links "tab" keeps coming back because the links FOLDER is conected directly to the Links TOOLBAR got it?! |

Solve : able to watch videos, but no sound available? |
Answer» on sites such as youtube.com and google video, i am able to watch the videos, but there are no audio sounds available. same with sites like myspace, can't hear any music coming from ppl's pages or from juno.co.uk, i can't hear samples of artist's music. if the site is windows media player based, i can hear the music. no problems hearing my own mp3s. i've tried on both IE and firefox Wave driversSomething like that should (theoretically) be fixed by the CODEC installation. That Realtek AC '97 Audio is a fussy blighter. You MUST ensure that you have your motherboard vendor/PC MANUFACTURER's specific sound drivers installed. What make and model is your new motherboard? If you need help finding that out, use one of the system information programs from the software FAQ. (System Information for Windows is my current favourite.) |

Solve : THIS IS A GOOD ONE / RESOLVED? |
Answer» Right. I just set up a new host for my web site. I POINTED the domain name to the host and I up loaded Joomla to the host. Did you develop the site on your home computer?it can take up to a couple days for a new (or moved) website to propagate on the internet. If you moved it today or yesterday, give it another try tonight or tomorrow. But, that doesn't explain the differences between viewing the site at work and at home, as he mentioned in the first post.sure it does. If there using different a different isp, the 'home' isp could still be routing them to the old site. I guess it's also a possibility that the 'home' isp caches pages for faster browsing and hasn't updated that site yet in their cache. I HELPED do a site for a CHURCH once, and when we moved the site from their isp's server to another, people using that isp only saw the old site. We eventually had to CALL the isp to tell them to fix it. Hi Everyone Well its working fine now. A big thank you for all your help and advise. Mark A Glad to hear things are working correctly now. We will mark this post as RESOLVED. dl65 |

Solve : F'Fox Bookmarks backup? |
Answer» Just a tip for the unaware. If you EXPORT the F'Fox BOOKMARKS to removable storage for backup and the storage media does not have enough free space for the file, no error message will be displayed and it will seem that the Export has been successful although just an empty file will have been created. I use a little gem called MOZBack...it will backup not only bookmarks but entire profiles including extensions and themes for both FireFox and ThunderBird...and it will tell you if the device does not have enough space to create the backup... Thank you Patio...That really is a gem and easy to use. Thanks to all for the input. |

Solve : Cannot log into myspace with Mozilla Firefox 2.0/1.5? |
Answer» Okay guys, I have tried a lot of things such as delete all cookies, browsing history, saved passwords, caches, and whatever ELSE. I type both my e-mail and password into the blank boxes that asks for it on myspace and I click on LOGIN and it does the CONNECTING to myspace... waiting for myspace... reading myspace... transferring... and it always leads me to the LOGIN screen, same thing I have went through before. I googled this to no avail. I have used Internet Explorer 7 to LOGIN and it worked without a problem, what is the problem with my firefox? It was working until Mozilla Firefox asked me if I wanted to update my firefox to 2.0, which I did, and restarted firefox. Now myspace doesn't let me log in, anyone have advice? I would love to hear some, I have used firefox for YEARS and don't plan on changing it. DOWNLOAD CCleaner and set it up according to this guide. |

Solve : print documents from internet using only black ink? |
Answer» i want to try to print everything from the internet w/ black ink instead of black & colored ink so i changed some settings & now my hotmail looks weird when i log on & when i go to print something from ie or mozilla it defaults to landscape unless i change it. You need to go Start/Printers and Faxes, then right-click your printer and select Properties. From there you should be able to set most of your default printing prefs. From the Properties panel, select Advanced and click on the Printing Defaults button at bottom of that panel. You should find a setting re: color vs. black and white, or grayscale. Aren't the printer properties DIFFERENT for the different brands of printers?I believe that's correct. I have 3 printers installed on my main computer. Two of them are Canon (BJC-2000 and BJC-3000). The Properties panel for them shows the same screen where either color or black and white can be selected. The other installed printer is an hp deskjet 5550 series and the screen where color PREFERENCE is set is different from the Canon printers. For the HP, the procedure appears to be to check a box for "Print in Grayscale" and then also select "Black Print Cartridge only".Quote i want to try to print everything from the internet w/ black ink instead of black & colored ink That's gonna take alot of ink ! ! Sorry couldn't resist... Why not just cut and paste the content into Notepad or Wordpad for those longer ones and print it that way ? ?Quote from: patio on June 02, 2007, 01:41:37 PM That's gonna take alot of ink ! ! The problem with printing with B&W and colored ink is that most of the time it isn't necessary, and sometimes only one of the colors in the color cartrige runs out, making the ENTIRE cartrige usless. |

Solve : Witch is the best internet browser?? |
Answer» When is IE faster? IE loads faster and is faster in startup. Same here. I've always noticed that IE tends to load significantly faster (I mean the program itself, not pages). I suppose it doesn't matter too much, though.Yeah, like when you restart your computer or when you turn it on. When you run Firefox for the first time it takes quite a while to start. But then after that when you try to open it's fine.Must admit that I just wanted to post the same question ( similar one ) as this one. But I followed the recommendations of the forum administrators and found this question which will work for my needs. I have a Gateway laptop with an AMD ATHLON, a gig of ram and windows XP. It seems to take forever to get to the desktop ( this is not the problem but I thought I would throw it in for any side comments ) On that laptop I have IE 5.x as well as Opera. I can't say that I have noticed a speed difference between the two browsers but I have noticed that less cookie are collected with Opera than IE 5 I also have an HP laptop with an Intel Centrino Duo which loads the desktop a lot faster than the Gateway. I basically have the same items in the systray. As an experiement I was thinking of trying Foxfire as my second browser and noticed that the download mentions Google; I'm guessing it means Foxfire with a Google menu bar? Is there a Google free version that I can download and what version is it? BTW this HP alerts me everyday that there are updates available for my computer and when checking closer it wants to update IE. The version that is currently in place is 6.0.2900. Is 7 any better than 6? If you download firefox now, it comes with the Google TOOLBAR. To get rid of the toolbar, do the FOLLOWING: Open Firefox click on Tools at the top click Add-ons click the Google Toolbar and choose Uninstall. Simpleim not sure this would belong in this section, as it is completely subjective.I also noticed that IE seems to load faster than firefox. I also did not like firefox when I tried it. But maybe it's just me .If you have too MANY add-ons, firefox will start slower but for me, web browsing is much easier.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on May 30, 2007, 11:26:51 PM If you have too many add-ons, firefox will start slower but for me, web browsing is much easier. So remove some, and/or follow one of the many Firefox tweak guides. Quote from: ms_dos_sux on May 30, 2007, 07:15:56 PM im not sure this would belong in this section, as it is completely subjective. So you felt the need to resurrect this topic? Can we leave the topic alone please? It's finished, let it rest in peace.Just out of curiosity, where does one find the Witch internet browser. I think I've ever tried it.Quote from: ms_dos_sux on May 30, 2007, 07:15:56 PM im not sure this would belong in this section, as it is completely subjective. If my posts are in the wrong place it's perfectly fine if someone with the power to do so; moves them. |
