Solve : "BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB????????????" appears in webpages; gmail won't load.?

Answer»

Hey,

I've had a problem for the last few days. Most web pages load with "BBBBBBBBBBBBBB??" (varying numbers of Bs and question marks) at the top of them, and some don't load properly at all (like Gmail - all I get is a load of random ASCII characters). What's going on? The problem occurs in both Firefox and Internet Explorer.

I use Windows XP. I've tried looking for spyware, adware and viruses and can't find anything that could be causing this. (I've used AVG, Avast! and Spyware Doctor).

Help!

Sean.damaged FONT FILES? WRONG character encoding? have you tried Opera?

which microsoft office product are you using?
which version of internet explorer are you using?

there are several errors which can happen if the MS OFFICE fonts list and file are damaged
and several WAYS to fix the problem,
can you do a repair installation of the microsoft office package that is installed, but you must have the installation DISCS to do that.

Solve : Slow initial connect to major web sites with high speed?

Answer»

I am running Windows XP on high speed cable connection using Windows Internet Explorer 6 also tried 7. Ex- I click favorites - Click on EBAY - it loads SLOW like on dialup
or I get the connection error MESSAGE. I then REFRESH and it comes up. If I leave EBAY or Amazon or any site up and click on another they come right up. I've tried pinging the sites - sometimes get 4 timeouts in a row, sometimes 3 of 4 are ok, sometimes 1 of 4 ok. If tested speed with my cable provider tech. support, it what it should be.
CPU usage normal - processes running normal. Does anyone have any ideas? When I first tried to post this message I got a timeout message and refreshed and resent.way2goofy ...is this something that has just started ?
Are you able to send and receive Email without the same lag ?

dl65 e-mail seems fine. Using Outlook. When I just hit the Reply to answer your question
I got a message "can't display web page" I then refreshed and it came right up. When I click on "post" it will probably do the same thing. Is pinging a web site a valid test? I get alot of timeouts when I ping Ebay or Amazon or any site. If I leave my favorites window up and go from say Ebay and click on Amazon it goes fast. It seems to be the initial entry to a web site. All was working fine until 3 days AGO.
E-mail seems fine. when I post or replied to your question I got :unable to connect & refreshed and then hit send again for it to go.Quote from: dl65 on June 07, 2007, 11:23:38 PM

Use tracert to one of the sites. Check the response time on each hop. You should be able to spot any abnormal delays. It could be any router along the path, including your ISP's.2k_dummy, thanks for responding. I used tracert on Ebay - Google - Las Vegas Advisor - Amazon, several times I got a trace complete with 15 to 45 ms on each hop. Other times it goes up to 15 HOPS and start getting timeouts. 24.234.12.6 &
24.234.5.42 & 24.39.48.54. I don't see a pattern other than the 24 ?? I downloaded another browser, Opera and it does the same thing on that. The goofy thing to me is once I'm up on a site - click favorites and click on another site I go fast to the new site. It seems to be the initial request for a site thats slow. I should be able to select any site from scratch and get there fast, right? It was that way 3 days ago and I haven't changed anything. Those IP's belong to Cox Communications and further assigned to LVCM.net Las Vegas. Their name servers appear slow to respond. I think your problem lies with your ISP.My problem got worse this morning & I finally out of frustration did a set point system restore. I went back less than a week and before my trbl. started. It worked
and I'm happy now! I appreciate everyone's help and I learned from this experience. This is a great site. Thanks

Solve : Hacking Firefox: The secrets of about: config?

Answer»

Discover more than 20 behind-the-scenes tweaks for speeding up page loads, reducing memory drain and making the interface behave the way you want it to

Ever since its debut, FIREFOX has garnered a reputation for being an enormously customizable program, both through its add-on architecture and its internal settings. In fact, many of Firefox's settings aren't exposed through the Tools > Options menu; the only way to CHANGE them is to edit them manually. In this article, we'll EXPLORE some of the most useful Firefox settings that you can change on your own, and that aren't normally available through the program's graphical interface.

The closest analogy to how Firefox manages its internal settings is the Windows Registry. Each setting, or preference, is given a name and stored as a STRING (text), integer (number) or Boolean (true/false) value. However, Firefox doesn't keep its settings in the registry, but in a FILE called prefs.js. You can edit prefs.js directly, but it's often easier to change the settings through the browser window.

type about:config in the address bar and press Enter, and you'll see all the settings currently enumerated in prefs.js, listed in alphabetical order. To narrow down the hundreds of configuration preferences to just the few you need, type a search term into the Filter: bar. (Click the Show All button or just clear the Filter: bar to get the full list back again.)

*very LONG ARTICLE on tweaking the firefox, like 6 pages if your interested*

http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9020880

Nice find, might try that sometimeIf I'm not mistaken, there is an extension for firefox available on addons.mozilla.org that tweak some of the settings listed in the article. There probably is, but why not just DIY without cluttering FF with extensions that can only do some of it?
I've already applied all of those tweaks I want to and more, I bet.MR Tech local install is one of the best FireFox extensions there is...

Be careful and as always backup your profile first...

MozBack is useful for this.

Solve : Particular site won't load at all...?

Answer»

HI I'm really confused by this. The site morethan.com will not load from my house. The site LOADS fine on other peoples computers at other locations. I USED to log on to it fine then about a week ago it stopped. Now it always times out. I have restarted my router, cable modem and all computers.

It won't load on any of my three mac computers. I don't think it's the router because it won't load EVEN when I plug the ethernet straight into one of the macs.

I also don't think it's the browser or the computer because I've tried different computers and browsers.

I have tried traceroute, but to be honest I don't really understand the printout, but it definitely doesn't seem to make it all the way, but does seem to make it past my ISP. I have tried pinging it and I get 100% loss of packets.

I have contacted my ISP and they blame my router, which I have since ruled out...

Any thoughts? thank you!Page will not load for me...tried 3 times in 5 minute intervals...WEIRD thing is I can load it fine if I use Dialup. Could it be I need a new cable modem?Possibly...your cable co. should replace it free but you have to beg.

Still unable to log on from here.I see the site just fine and I'm on dial-up. I've never heard of a site that doesn't load for broadband connections...surely this is just a coincidence? When you visit the site on dial-up, you're using the same computer?statusmellow ........ I just tried the site below ......
http://www.morethan.com/

it' works just fine ....... are you able to connect to all other sites ok ?

dl65 Still will not load for me...2 different machines/connections...Loads perfectly fine for me.

I once had a similar problem with my school website and not being able to upload files on it. I think the trouble was with my ISP, because it worked just fine using dial-up.Hi, Thanks for the replies. Yes, I can't load this on any machine using my cable modem, but I can load it fine on dialup modem. I can load everything else just fine, but this is my insurance company so I want to access their site!

As for what's happening for you Patio, I'm confused.... I rang morethan about this but they just thought I was nuts, and I can see why because everyone else I've asked can access this site, including the techs at my ISP... I think I'll call them again on Monday. I'll let you know what happens.

Hi all...

The LATEST is that I can only access morethan.com through dialup, not through my cable modem, but my ISP is saying it's nothing to do with them... I'm waiting to talk to a supervisor at the ISP. Any ideas on how I can persuade them to do something about this¿

Thanks,

TomHI,

The ISP tech says that my IP address is being blocked by morethan.com(?), so now I am using PHProxy.org until my IP address is changed... Make sense? It seems to work anyway.

Thanks for your help.

TomWhat ISP are you using?
Quote

so now I am using PHProxy.org until my IP address is changed... Make sense? It seems to work anyway.
Makes sense.
A proxy routes your connection through their server, so their IP is shown rather than yours.Did you happen to tee them off enough to block your IP ? ?hi,

If I understand it correctly it is MoreThan who has blocked my IP. I would imagine that because my ISP switches my IP periodically, I got one that MoreThan doesn't like, due to someone else's behaviour? The only thing I've ever done to them is ping them a few times, and even then it was to try and diagnose why I was blocked!

TomSend an email to morethan and explain the situation to them they should unblock you then.

Solve : Firefox 2.0.0.4 latest update released?

Answer»
All of you FireFox users (and there is a lot of us), today the next update for the 2.0 branch was released. Firefox 2.0.0.4 is available for download, and brings several important fixes. On the Windows side, several changes were made to Windows Vista support, though there are still a few unresolved issues such as a slightly broken IE7 migration and no WMP INTEGRATION. Five security fixes have been included for all platforms, only one of which was rated critical, and a few other minor changes have been included. You can read the details in the 2.0.0.4 release notes, or you can just download it.

http://www.techspot.com/news/25492-firefox-2004-released.html

Yeah, I downloaded it yesterday. Then I had to update the other 3 on my other flash drives and my other computers...which was irritating...GOT it yesterday, with FileHippo's update checker.
Very useful tool, that.
BTW, Java doesn't seem to be compatible with the 2.0.0.4 release yet, but I've noticed no other problems.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on June 01, 2007, 04:17:03 AM

You're talking about the portable version, right? Is it usually updated at the same time the regular version is updated? No, not the protable version. I just copied the program files for Firefox onto my flash drive and it can be run from there, although I can't keep a custom theme.
Can you do that wil the portable version?Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on June 04, 2007, 09:12:02 PM

That's the whole idea behind portable FireFox...you can take your bookmarks, extensions and themes wherever you go...

soybean yes it's been updated...Grab ItQuote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on June 04, 2007, 09:12:02 PM
No, not the protable version. I just copied the program files for Firefox onto my flash drive and it can be run from there, although I can't keep a custom theme.
I'm surprised it will run that way. A normal installation of Firefox ADDS some entries to Windows registry. Apparently, those entries are not critical to RUNNING Firefox. Nevertheless, I'll use the portable version if I WANT to run it on a flash drive, for the reasons patio mentioned.Right, yes. I'll get that then. It would help a lot fo keep all my themes, addons and stuff.
Thanks for the link patio.Actually i'm surprised it is running that way as well...even if it does each time you use it on another machine you are leaving behind remnants on whatever machine you run it on...kinda defeats the purpose of Portable FireFox.I updated my firefox t the 2.0.04. I also use Mozilla T-bird for my email. Does anyone know why I can no longer access t-bird from my tools menu in Firefox?

Solve : local area connection: a network cable is unplugged ??

Answer»

I'm RUNNING Windows XP and Internet Explorer browser. My question is when i go to close a message comes on that says internet explorer needs to close. Can anyone guide me on fixing these two problems. florieYou need to give more information. You only talked about one problem, but SAID you needed help with two problems. The only place you mention the other problem is in the post subject. But I cannot diagnose that problem unless you give more information (click here).

I believe I may know what your other problem. But first, let me ask you a question. Do you have any toolbars installed on your Internet Explorer?Sorry, I don't know anything about computers. Here is whats happening.
On the bottom of my comp. shows a computer screen with an x over it. It reads when i use the pointer without clicking it. LOCAL AREA CONNECTION A NETWORK CABLE IS UNPLUGGED. WHEN i click on it it has INTEL (r)100ve network connection. I don't know what to do from there.

When i am disconnecting the other problem comes up INTERNET EXPLORER NEEDS TO CLOSE. On the bottom where it shows my connection provider reads ABOUT BLANK. I dont know what to do here. If it is an add on or a what. can i agree to have someone look into this by opening that share connection to fix my comp with me ?
florieAre you able to view websites and/or access the internet on your computer, or does the internet not work at all?I am able to view websites and connect to the web.

Is a local area connection: a network cable mean it's a plug to my computer ? Where is this plug that is mentioned??
FlorieThrough what kind of plug is your modem connected to your computer? USB?

If your internet works then do not worry about the unconnected ICON appearing. Your internet connection will not appear on your taskbar by DEFAULT. Right-Click the network connection icon, and click on "Open Network Connections". Tell me how many interent connections there are. If you are able to access the internet, there should be one with a "connected" status.

About your Internet Explorer crashing, that may be DUE to a toolbar you have installed (something like the Yahoo! or Google toolbars). Do you have any of those installed?

I see from your other post that you have Internet Explorer 6. Maybe if you update to IE7 it would fix the problem. To do that, click here.

Solve : Cannot get to sites in IE?

I have a Compaq Presario S-series and yesterday my computer was messing up because I changed the memory. Before I changed the memory, I had installed IE 7 and restarted the computer. Once I FIXED the computer, everything was going NORMALLY except I couldn't get to web pages. I am connected wirelessly to the internet and the connection signal description says excellent. Can someone help me?I am not sure if this will work for both of you but you could try clearing your TEMP internet files and cache and give it another try. If this doesn't work you could also check the settings on your wireless router to make sure that it is not blocking webpages. It could also be your router, if you SET up secruity on the router, then some sites cannot be displayed. Thanks for the ideas. I've tried the deleting of all the temp internet files and even went out and bougt a new route (Linksys N ) and adpter for the wireless. After one hour with the nice Linksys people I was still no further ahead. I think it may just be possessed?SWITCH to Firefox:

Solve : Help with Google Please !??

Answer»

Whenever I do a Google search it displays 10 results on the page, but only the very last 3 are actually the results I'm looking for. The first 7 don't even have anything to do with my search. For example, if I serach for "Myspace Graphics" the first 7 results are for Credit cards, AUTOMOBILE Auctions, etc. & the last 3 results are for the different Myspace Sites. I have tried running all kinds of spyware, antivirus, ADWARE - such as Spybot, Highjack This, Norton's Antivirus, Adaware, Noadware, Advanced Windows Care, & lots of others. None of them helped. I have even run Registry Cleaning software & that too did not help. I've deleted all Cookies & Temp. Internet Folders. I've also tried using different Google sites such as Google.ca, Google.co.uk etc., & still got the same results. The problem only seems to be with Google, as I have tried using ALTAVISTA & it worked fine. I really like using Google better since it comes with a Toolbar. ???Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

At the top middle of the page there is a preferences link...click on this. Here you can make some adjustments on how the page loads including number of topics listed etc...

Also if you are using Firefox with the AdBlocker extension installed you won't see nearly as many useless ads in the listings.

Hope this helps.Hi,

I can go to the yahoo page and see that I have email but it doesn't allow me to access the email. All I get a basically a blank page with some links on top. Also, I can no longer play video on many of the news websites I frequent. CNN, MSNBC, FOXNEWS. There are some sites I can play video on. I also can not open many links as well. My main ISSUE is I need to access my email. I also have email from work which is web based which I can not access either. And I can not access anything from work from my home computer anymore. I have been told that the JAVA scripting may have been deleted, I have made sure that it is enabled. Someone else told me to reload Microsoft 2000, I can't because this computer was built by a private person and I don;'t have the disc for that. I do have an old copy of microsoft 98. Can anyone help?Someone mentioned that they downloaded a different web BROWSER and it helped them so I tried that. I downloaded netscape and it worked!! I can now access both my gmail and yahoo email. I am still not able to play video with Windows media player, when I try to open Windows Media Player up states that an "Internal Application Error has Occurred" Does anyone know anything I can do about that?
Thanks!Go to Start / Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have your Win2K CD handy as it will ask for it.

Solve : Help with IE?

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, but I am getting desperate.

About a week ago, this one site which I have always acessed from this computer started acting funny. It would let me on the forum, but as soon as I click a specific thread, it freezes as soon as the page loads. I haven't changed anything on my computer; it just randomly stopped working. Every other site loads fine, and that specific site loads from my downstairs computer (with the same internet connection) and other peoples houses, just not MY computer.

I don't think so. Is there a way to check for that?

I have a simple pop-up blocker, but I've had it for ages and the forum used to work with it intact. I'll disable it and see what happens. Click on Security settings in Control Panel...Wait a second...so, you don't have any protection? Download AVG Free, update it, and scan with it in Safe Mode. Let us KNOW what the results are.

Solve : unable 2 open any links with explorer, new page is blank & freezes. Any idea's??

Answer»

Before doing anything else, I'd like to SEE what happens when you try repairing/reinstalling IE6. If that doesn't work, then it would be a good idea to try out another browser.

You will eventually want to update your Windows, however, for SECURITY reasons. Let's just hope we can get your problem fixed before taking those steps. I think there's a chance that updating could fix your IE6 problem, but I would like to try everything else first. We'll KEEP this one on the backburner for the time being.hi,
sorry been away for a while. have tried the steps you said..
As for the-

But before taking any steps towards that, I would like you to check out the two links below...

this has not fixed the problem... so sorry... do you think I should try the different browser now??
Hi there, LONG time no see. Firefox is definitely worth a shot. However, I think you may have to bite the bullet and just try installing SP2. After backing up your important data, of course.hi Chris, yes been a while thanks for again helping. I have downloaded Firefox and I can again open links extra. I will back up and install the SP2..... hopefully that will fix all problems.. I will let you know... YOU ARE A STAR!!!!!!!!! cant believe what I have learnt from u and the help that you have given cant say thanks enough.....Computer is running so much better and now I actually have anti-virus ...(a real one) thanks..chat soon.....

Solve : orkut problem?

Answer»

I'm having a problem.. when i typed orkut.com then a message box appeared message box was saying saying "Orkut is banned you fool. The administrators didnt did this. Guess who did. Muhahaha" . and then the browser window is closed. can anyone help me out.

See if this takes you to the log in screen.Have your friends been spending any time on that machine without you there ? ?i GOT the solution as follows.

1.Press CTRL+ALT+DEL and go to the processes tab
2.Look for svchost.exe under the image name. There will be many but look for the ones which have your username under the username
3.Press DEL to KILL these files. It will give you a warning, Press Yes
4.REPEAT for more svchost.exe files with your username and repeat. Do not kill svchost.exe with system, local service or network service!
5.Now open My Computer
6.In the address bar, type C:\heap41a and press ENTER. It is a hidden folder, and is not visible by default.
7.Delete all the files here
8.Now go to Start --> Run and type Regedit
9.Go to the menu Edit --> Find
10.Type "heap41a" here and press enter. You will get something like this "[winlogon] C:\heap41a\svchost.exe C:\heap(some number)\std.txt"
11.Select that and Press DEL. It will ask "Are you sure you wanna delete this value", click Yes
12.Now CLOSE the registry editor.
Now the virus is gone. But be sure to delete the autorun.inf file and any folder whose name ends with .exe in the pen drive.

UPDATE
It seems that they have named this malware as w32.USBWorm and according my friend, Avast is able to detect and remove it. I hope the other antivirus software will also be able to remove it soon.

I'm not sure i would trust this removal but i'm glad it worked for you...ya it worked and now no problem.

Solve : Problems connecting to IE7, Firefox, Messenger?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum. In fact, just only discovered this site while searching thru Google. My problem is:

Recently (about 1-2 weeks ago) my IE7 and Messenger stopped working. I have not been able to connect to either. I have ALWAYS worked fine with both until this time. The error message that shows up in Messenger says that I am not able to connect. As for IE7, it just doesn't show anything... no error message nothing.

As a result, I downloaded Firefox 2.0.0.4 in order to try and browse, but that doesn't work either. The status bar remained at a minimal, and after some time, stops loading, saying that is "Done" but with a blank page.

I know that my internet connection works fine, because emule still works. Subsequently downloaded Seamonkey and I can browse the internet again.

Been tweaking with the Firewall (windows), mcafee allowing ACCESS to all the said programmes, but nothing.

I work on Win XP SP2, P4 3ghz, 1 gb ram. My anti virus is up to date, and windows automatic UPDATE switched on, tune up utilities 2007.

Please help.

Thank you!

EvanWhat happened before this started?Hi

Everything worked like normal. Then one weekend, failed to connect to hotmail, messenger, internet. But emule was still running.

Tried rebooting, nothing. Also lately (before this started) everytime that I tried going in to the internet it seems like my adsl connection would pop up.

That would be the only strange that had happenedHi everyone,

Just to inform you that this problem I had has now been resolved.

It was Mcafee (my anti virus) that was CAUSING all the problems... blocking all the accesses to ie7, firefox and messenger. I only happened upon this by chance as i was installing a new anti virus. So after removing mcafee, and installing nod32, viola, every worked again as if nothing happened.

So thank you for trying to help.

Solve : Annoying IE?

Answer»

Okay, I'm having an annoying problem. I use Mozilla Firefox, and its fine. However, all of a sudden (this happens infrequently, sometimes just 1, sometimes several) a pop-up like ad will COME up in Internet Explorer. It isn't always a pop-up ad, sometimes the internet explorer window will just appear and in the url bar will be some internet address that doesn't exist (an error always pops up).

Here is one example of a pop-up 'ad':

http://www.militarybyowner.com/Find_A_Home/California/californiarealestate.htm

I've tried to uninstall IE, but I can't seem to. I've done tests with AVG and there are no viruses or anything like that. I checked Internet Explorer, and pop-up blocker is on High, with no exceptions allowed.

Can anyone offer any solutions?Does this HAPPEN even when IE is not open?
List all your protection programs, it sounds like you're infected.I never use IE, so I'm pretty sure its not open before it happens (its not on the list of processes)

Right now, the only program I use for getting rid of viruses is AVG. As for protection, I have the normals Windows security center stuff (Firewall, automatic updates, and virus protection is all on).

I think you might be right though, as yesterday I used AVG to get rid of a lot of viruses (Trojan horse) and as I do the scan today, they seem to be reappearing. The test isn't complete yet, but here is the information for the two viruses AVG found (It found them yesterday and healed them, but they appear again today)

hjmhmmfo.exe - Trojan horse Generic5.CF - C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrater\Local Settings\Temp\hjmhmmfo.exe

yodxgqna.exe - Trojan horse Collected.11.B - C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrater\Local Settings\Temp\yodxgqna.exe

Last night, all the viruses seemed to be in the same place (C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrater\Local Settings\Temp\)

Sorry for the delayed REPLY, I was typing one and then realised I needed some food.
Get Adaware 2007, Spybot SEARCH & Destroy, and AVG Anti-Spyware.
Download, install and update them.
Then boot into safe mode by tapping F8 before Windows loads, and run full scans with all those programs and AVG.
Remove anything they find.
Then boot back into normal mode, and post a HijackThis log here, or attach it to a post if you like.
All these programs can be found here, please note that Ewido is now known as AVG Anti-Spyware and Adaware SE as Adaware 2007.
They are also all free.

Important: before doing this, turn system restore off. Control Panel - System - System restore - check the box to turn it off,a nd do it for all drives and partitions if you have more than one.Dad told me 2 or 3 days ago to get anti-virus thing 'search and destroy', (which has been said on here) but also to make sure it was version 1.4 (just something to consider)That's the only version I have seen AROUND, other than beta 1.5.
If you get it from their site or a reputable source, you will always get the latest version.

Solve : Scrolling problem?

Answer»

Dunno why, but in every web browser (firefox/opera) when I try to scroll down, it's not smooth. It goes like steps, not a continuous motion. What MOUSE are you using? aka make and model
Logitech MX310 optical mouse, I've been using it for a while now and this problem only occured in the web/only started to happen yesturday. there is a smooth scroll option.... where it is i am not SURE.well google dosent seem to like me at the moment , was there any software with the mouse or is it just plug and PLAY , because i would check your settings very well , i had a scrolling problem with my mouse but because its wireless it came with software and a setting options when i can adjust the buttons to my likeing i would really look hard in your settings , im sure there will be something in there to help you sometimes even trouble shooting helps on the mouse its self.http://www.instructables.com/id/E3WT1T6VLLEQ2W3ME3/?ALLSTEPS

But this just gets rid of the mouse part of the scroll click... Which drives me insane i take the spring out of all of mine.Well I don't think it's the problem with the mouse itself since I can scroll up and down in msn fine.yah i figured but its always FUN to rip stuff APART anyways

Solve : Annoying Ads on Yahoo! Mail?

Answer»

Recently (no idea when it started) there is large text hyperlink shown up when I'm on Yahoo! Mail.
How to get rid of that?
It's ANNOYING and I'm PUZZLED why Yahoo! do that... It's probably just Yahoo, they support themselves partly with ads.
Nothing you can do about it, although you COULD try Firefox with Adblock Plus and a filterset updater. It's not only annoying.
Although it only appears in certain mails (and Inbox!), but for those pages that they appear, all the buttons (Delete, Reply, Forward, etc.) are not responding!
I'll have to open the mail in order to do anything with it, which I cannot do in Inbox interface.
And for those mails that is affected, I cannot do anything with the mail.

Inbox

Affected Mail

Non-affected Mail
Not having used Yahoo, I can't say if that's normal or not, although I'd be surprised if it was.
How about on a different computer, is it the same?
What browser are you using? It's absolutely not normal.
I couldn't try on another computer because I only have one in my house.
I'm using Firefox.Definitely not normal. What's your OS? What protection do you have?My OS is Win XP SP2.
I have Norton Antivirus, AVG Anti-spyware, Spybot S&D.
I don't THINK it has anything to do with virus or adware since it only affect certain mails.
It just seems that the hyperlinks are displayed in very large font rather than normal one, and that the buttons are not working.
Download CCleaner (install without Yahoo! toolbar) and configure it according to this GUIDE. Make sure you also set it to clean out your Firefox files.

Update AVG, reboot into Safe Mode, and perform a full system scan. Let it clean whatever it wants. Restart your computer and post the log here.

Then download HijackThis and post a log for us to take a look it.

It may or may not be an infection...this will help us determine that.

Solve : sluggish internet connection?

Answer»

Hello,

LET me sum up my problem:

About a month ago I was experiencing recurring problems connecting to the Internet. I called my Internet Service Provider and my computer manufacturer, both of whom took me through Router tests, Reinstalling Windows, Unplugging/Replugging Internet cables, Installing New Network Card, etc.

Eventually I reinstalled Windows XP and I seemed to be able to connect to the Internet fine. Now my Internet connection is sluggish again. I have connection, but it's much slower than it should be.

I feel like tech support at Dell and Verizon Fios, my Internet provider, will have nothing more to say to me if I call them again. Awhile back, I had also received the message "LAN connection: A network CABLE is unplugged" in the right HAND corner of my screen, which has GONE away for the most part now but which was there in the past.

What is this problem and how can I get my Internet back once and for all?

THANK you.Unplug the power cable from your router and modem. Wait about 30 seconds and plug in your modem first. Wait until the ready light is solid and then plug in your router. Once you are able to connect again, run a speed test to see exactly what speeds you are getting.

Man...glad I found this site! here is the deal.....HP computer running cox high speed internet for internet access using the internet explorer browser. I go to my compuserve home page to log into my email. SINCE yesterday when ever I input my screen name for compuserve and my password and click "go" I am taken right back to the login screen. I haven't been able to access my email in two days. Any ideas? thanks! If you are talking about logging in to your CompuServe webmail...you'll need to contact CompuServe for that. How are you accessing the site? There's a possibility of a fake login page, which would be BAD business. Are you accessing it the same way you normally do?

Regardless...The Saviour's right, you'll be better off contacting CompuServe for this particular problem.Hey, the site is one my favorites list. I just keep getting recycled back to the login page of compuserve. I did get in on one email address yesterday but it back doing the same thing TODAY. Well, you'll definitely want to contact them. They will most likely be able to provide better ASSISTANCE. This MAY be an issue they are already aware of. Be sure to let us know how it goes. Thanks for the help! M

Solve : Web pages load slowly?

Answer»

Since yesterday internet Explorer 6 takes two to two and a half minutes to load URLs which I have typed in. What I find puzzling is that sites listed in 'FAVOURITES' come up quickly. For example if I type www.bbc.co.uk I would get this c.2 min delay but as it's in my Favourites list it comes up in a few seconds which doesn't seem logical to me. I have XP with 512 Kb RAM, AMD ATHLON 2.2 GHz chip and ISP is provided by cable. Any suggestions what I can do please ? First thing I'd do is update your version of Windows by visiting Windows Update and downloading the high-priority updates for your computer. If you're running IE 6, then you're definitely behind the times. Keeping your system up-to-date is a regular part of routine maintenance.

The next thing I'd do is to run Disk Clean Up and a Defrag.

Lastly...I'd make sure my MALWARE protection is up-to-date and run fullsystem scans in Safe Mode. When done...run them again normally.

You can also select which programs you want to run at Startup by running msconfig in the RUN command line. Thanks I'll try updating to IE7 and Defrag which I last did a month ago. But it's still mighty queer to me that yesterday it was working and today it isn't!Just remember to do the malware scans also...just like I mentioned in my previous post...okay.

...you're welcome.Did DiscClearn Up and Defrag - no difference. I'd forgotten the importance of doing advert scan (Lavasoft Ad-Aware) in safe mode however and that seemed to do the trick. Typed URLs now come up properly. As well as Norton Security Suite I can recommend a little program called jvw's History Eraser which I've just got. It cleans dozen odd files relating to your RECENT web acticity eg. recentry run programs, temporary files, internet history, index.dat etc. I paid €8 which is about $11.50 - I thought it quite useful. Anyway, many thanks for your helpful suggestion. You're welcome...glad I could help.

Solve : IE has encountered a problem......?

Answer»

Win 98SE o/s, all critical updates installed. Using NOD32 a/v, ALSO Spybot, Adaware, and Win Patrol for malware/spyware removal. Lately, I have been getting quite a NUMBER of the "IE has encountered a problem and needs to close" messages. I opt not to send the report to MS, since they don't support it anymore. I'm wondering what would cause this. I have not installed any new SOFTWARE or hardware. If I look at the problem description, it generally involves the DREADED kernel 32, lol. Any suggestions?? BTW, I would prefer to continue using IE as opposed to GOING to another browser. well what's happening at the time it crashes like that? is there a specific action that seems to cause it?I've noticed this happening at random times, but among them, is when I open an email with attachments. However, it may happen when changing websites (surfing) etc. It's the random-ness that is perplexing. Can't really pin it down to one specific activity that causes it. The next time it happens, I'll jot down the details and include them in a post here.

Can anyone help so that I can sort my problems out ? In the blue banner line above the error message is

Solve : INTERNET HISTORY BAR??

Answer»

I am not completely stupid to the computer. I KNOW the basics but I have a question...Internet Explorer ADDRESS Bar History? Does this show only what the viewer has viewed or can thing pop up in there that where not viewed? I hope this helps if you want to remove it.

Quote

Internet Explorer keeps track of each URL that you type in the address bar as a convenience to save you from typing the next time that you visit that site. However, any user that uses your computer can find out what addresses you typed in as well so some MAY be interested in clearing the address bar addresses. Just clearing the browser history will not do this as a registry modification is needed:

1. Click on Start, then Run.
2. Type regedit in the box provided.
3. In Regedit NAVIGATE to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Typed URLs
4. Then just DELETE all of the keys that list the URL's you no longer want to see.
In answer to your question only visited sites will show up there...

Solve : Can't browse the web in IE, but absolutely can on AOL and Firefox.?

Answer»

Can anybody at Computer HOPE help me? I'm having a problem with my default browser, which is Intenet Explorer. This suddenly happened today, and I have been unable to browse the web using the browser. (I'm on the very computer that has this issue, and my sister's desktop has the same problem.) Oddly enough, I can browse the web with no problems on AOL or Mozilla Firefox. I upgraded IE from Version 6 to Version 7, but the problem occurred before then. My computer is as follows:

HP Pavilion 1440n
Pentium D 2.80 Ghz
Windows XP Media Center Edition (Service Pack 2)
2.00 GB RAM

Do you need any additional information? I'm mainly waiting for a RESPONSE from either Patio or CBMatt.

EDIT: (Please Read) I just remembered something. When I uninstalled Jetico Personal Firewall was when Internet Explorer stopped working properly. That's why I can't access the internet with it. Also, I already rolled back from Internet Explorer 7 back to Internet Explorer 6, and the problem is still happening, so I have to blame JPF. I was using version 1.0.

I THINK I need a program to remove traces of that firewall. This topic needs to be closed. I fixed the problem. All I needed to do was use System Restore to restore to the configuration and file settings that the computer had on July 04, 2007. I can use Internet Explorer again.

EDIT: It appears I can lock it myself. Is this correct?Yes.

Set the value of "FullScreen" to "no"
exit the registry. Reboot.
Um...just so you know, you're telling him to turn off auto-Full Screen. This isn't his problem at all.

shadou,
Now that you're back, I suppose maybe we should get back to the issue on hand. I do my best to stay away from IE7, but I'll try to offer at least some help, although my knowledge here is limited. Using the Tools option, have you ensured that Full Screen is actually turned on? You could try that registry edit above and replace "no" with "yes" but this will normally just cause IE to open in Full Screen, which isn't exactly what you want. The only other thing I can think of to try is going to the site and checking for any new updates. I wish I could offer you more help than this.

As for the insane number of views...I did a search on Google for problems related to this, and this very thread is the #1 result. Perhaps this might be the reason why it's getting so many views. Could be a popular problem with IE7.This page got indexed on Google and is a high result when searching for "ie7 full screen". I'd imagine that this post is getting so many views because it's an issue being encountered by multiple people who are looking for a resolution. So let's see if we can find a resolution for all the users looking for a solution and not delete the post. Also just as a side note I deleted posts on this thread about its high hit count simply to clean it up.

If you're a user experiencing this issue also please let us know if any of the suggested resolutions work so we can have a POSITIVE resolution to this issue.

1. Press Alt to display and/or hide the file menu that is auto-hidden by default. If this menu is being displayed after pressing the alt key you'll be unable to go full screen.

2. I was unable to duplicate this issue on any of the computers here including the computers running Windows Vista. So my first recommendation would be to make sure you disable and/or remove any add-ons or extra tool bars you have running on Internet Explorer. It's very likely older tool bars and search bars may not be compatible with the new IE 7 and are causing the issue.

Toolbars can be temporarily disabled by clicking Tools, Toolbars and unchecking extra Toolbars installed (by default Status is the only toolbar checked). Additionally you can often completely uninstall a toolbar through the Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel.

Additionally updating all installed toolbars is also a good recommendation.

3. Make sure to scan the computer for any additional SPYWARE that may have been present on the computer before Internet Explorer 7 was installed on the computer. I recommend Windows Defender for those users who don't have it it can be found at:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

4. Read that several users with SiteHound (Site Hound) have been encountering this issue. If this program is installed try SEEING if any updates are available, if not try uninstalling it to see if it resolves your issue.

5. Try this utility suggested by CBMatt in this post.Quote
Sorry, I checked on this topic for about a week and there were no replies with about 30 views so I just thought it would be relegated to the dustbin or something....Now I come back and there's over 13,000+ views! Anyways, I'm running IE7 Version 7.0.5730.11 under Windows XP SP2. I'm guessing there's an IE7 SP2 update or something I'm missing?
Pretty positive 7.0.5730.11 is the latest version for computers running Windows XP. All computers here are running the same version and do not encounter this issue.

Windows Vista's version however is 7.0.6000.16386 but don't think it's related to this issue.Below are the instructions on fixing this in IE6. Probably works just as well for IE7.

Internet Explorer opens as a small window

1. Open a link.
2. Don't use the maximize button.
3. Stretch the corners so that the window fills the screen.
4. Close all other IE windows.
5. Close the stretched window last.

Or Try Here...

It sounds like you have managed to turn off the auto-hide feature and that is why the title bar remains even when you are viewing IE7 in full screen mode.
The easiest way to enable auto-hide is to press the Alt, Space and H keys simultaneously. Do this after you hit F11 and enter full screen mode.
This will toggle the feature on and off each time you press this key combination.
I thought I would jump on and put my 2 cents into this topic.

This is what was happening:

When the F11 key was pressed IE7 would start to go to full screen mode and then disappear. I would then not be able to bring up IE7 at all. I ended up having to restore to a previous point to be able to use Internet Explorer 7 again. I tried reinstalling explorer 7 and it had the same problems. I'd hit the F-11 key to go into the full screen mode and it would try to go into full screen mode and then disappear, and my explorer wouldn't work.

I USED the software that was recommended by CBMatt in an earlier post to help to diagnose what was happening and came up with the following explanation and resolution:

I believe that when you hit F11 IE7 makes changes to registry files to remember that you are in full screen mode for the next time that you start the program. There was anti spyware program that was installed on the computer and it monitored changes to registry files initiated from the browser. Every time that IE7 tried to make the registry change the anti-spyware program would shut IE7 down as an unauthorized registry change, and since IE7 was "remembering" that it was supposed to try to be in full screen mode the last time it was used it kept trying to do so and kept getting shut down by the security program.

Since there were other anti-spyware and virus protection programs installed on the machine I just un-installed the program that was causing the problems. I'm sure that there may have been a setting that I could have set in the program but on initial look I didn't see anything that was easily found so I just got rid of it and now everything is running fine.

I guess all in all.. if someone is having problems with their F-11 functions... check their antispyware programs to see if they are blocking registry entries and see if they can make an exception rule for IE7.

Hope this helps someone.

Great post and thanks for the update. I'm sure it will definitely help other users.tjnewton, do you remember the name of the anti-spyware program? The security software is part of the "Charter High Speed Security Suite" that is available to Charter communications customers who use their cable internet service. The program that I un-installed is called F-Secure.hi all.

Solve : tiny words/letters only in IE?

Answer»

All of a sudden last week while on my usual email page, all of a sudden on all internet pages, most(but not all) words a now very small and I cannot even read alot of them. It's not in windows, only IE6 sp2. Can anyone help me out?Have you tried clearing your browser cache?I can't even find the cache for IE. where is it at?Try this.

Select 'View' and select 'Text Size'.

The standard setting should be medium as FAR as i know. You're also running IE6...the latest is IE7.

You may want to visit Windows Update for the latest high-priority updates.deerpark got it. windows just poped up saying my virtual memory was low. I'm wondering if it adjusted the ie setting on it's own. Anyways it worked just changing the view/text size/mediumAnother suggestion would be if you press and hold the ctrl key while scrolling up or down with your mouse. (Using the middle scroll thing.) This will change the text size within the browser.

Do a ctrl & scroll up to make text smaller.
Do a ctrl & scroll down to make text bigger.

Since I see you fixed your problem this is just ANOTHER way you could have tried.Quote from: Panda25 on July 12, 2007, 01:51:12 PM

That's probably how the text size got messed up in the first place. Quote from: Deerpark on July 12, 2007, 02:29:06 PM

This is a good point, Deerpark...

Something else that's funny...the issue has been resolved (nice JOB BTW), but help is still being offered.

Why not just leave well enough alone?Sorry, I didn't mean any harm with the advice I GAVE, I was just pointing out that this is another way to change the text size. Next time I'll just leave well enough along.

Solve : Missing command and menu bars in ie7 64 bit browser vista?

Answer»

My command bars, menu bars and stars (FAVORITES) all disappeared in the 64 bit ie7 browser. Otherwise it works just fine. The 32 bit browser also works fine. It is a system wide problem as regardless of which ID is used to login, the problem persists. There apparently is no repair or reinstall facility for IE7 and i'm not about to reinstall Vista (took me THREE months to get it working reasonable well)! My guess is that modification of the REGISTRY can fix it but I have no idea what to modify since the registry entries do not appear to differentiate between the 32 bit and 64 bit BROWSERS. The last thing I WANT to do is mess up the 32 bit one! Also, when open, the explorer bar at the bottom of the screen is blank, showing only the IE logo with no address filled in. I have been referred to online fixes that apply to XP an IE 6 but have found nothing for Vista, IE7 64 bit. Any registry wizards out there?

Solve : Help I cant access the page!!?

Everytime I go into a website, its a cooking website I cant access it. I click on the recipe but then I get this message:

We're very sorry!
The page you requested cannot be found

If you typed the URL yourself, please make sure that the spelling is correct.
If you clicked on a link to get here, there may be a problem with the link.
Try using your browser's "Back" button or the "Return to previous page" link below to choose a DIFFERENT link on that page, or use search to find what you are LOOKING for.

Return to previous page

I really dont understand what this is about as I try to keep my computer is updated.

Im using Windows XP, IE7.

Please help, someone. ThanksWhat site and could you give us an example of a link that doesn't work?Hi the website is www.chefmufeed.com

When I click on the desserts, appertisers or main course link it goes in but when I click on a particular recipe i get that message I told you about before. it also happens on any link i click on. HMM.. there indeed seems to be an ISSUE with IE 7 and this site.
I can open the links fine in Firefox, but in Internet Explorer the links doesn't work.
I can't explain why at the moment, but for some reason IE 7 is messing up the links.
This is how it looks in IE7
http://www.chefmufeed.com/x.pro/ModShow/ShowPage/x.pro/EggplantDipBabaghanooj.html

And this is the same link in Firefox.
http://www.chefmufeed.com/x.pro/EggplantDipBabaghanooj.html

This is very strange. Ill try and to look into this though.I've done some searching but I haven't been able to find a solution other than to switch to another browser that is.

You could edit the links manually though.
When you click a link and get the page not found error. Go to your address BAR and delete what I've underlined from the URL.

http://www.chefmufeed.com/x.pro/ModShow/ShowPage/x.pro/EggplantDipBabaghanooj.html

Then hit enter and the page should load.Hi Deerpark

Solve : internet explorer needs to close?

Answer»

FIREFOX (cough) Florie this is just a suggestion: try using Spybot Search and destroy to check your PC for spyware. I did it and since then I have not had any problem with that message. If you are using XP remember to turn System restore off b4 checking it. I found some spyware on that PC and haven't had that problem since. Try it,but I'm not guaranteeing it .This must be an ongoing problem. I too have the same problem with IE6. I am using windows xp sp2, I use my spybot 1 a week religiously, and also my Ad-aware. I use Norton's Antivirus. I just had my whole comp redone by putting everything I use on disc and erasing all other material. If I close one page I get the oh so sweet message IE has experienced a problem an NEEDS to shut down. I go to school online when I use a spell check, and close the window my whole screen or screens also close. I also tried using Mozilla- Firefox but same problem. So how do we fix this? I am at the end of my rope!!!Does this problem have anything to do with webpages that use Java? That's a very good question! I'm not SURE, but I've seen it happen QUITE often with Yahoo mail and ANOTHER site called Businessghana.com, but mind you this happens only on one of my PCs. It seems to me that this rather OS related, because I know that Java pages in Firefox just tell you that you that need to download additional plug-ins. It doesn't prevent the rest of the page from displaying. I don't know whether this helps in our search for a solution...Windows Update----> Critical. I had browser crash problems before with pages using Java. Besides Windows update, check for Java updates. Go to the Control Panal, double-click the Java icon, click the Update tab, and click Check for updates.i think so 2 because it is hard to download videos online. and so many things has to be install to view certian web pages I too am having this problem. However, I don't get a message that Internet Explorer needs to close. When I close smaller windows, every window closes down to my Juno toolbar. Even my juno homepage shuts down. I am not kicked off the internet, just off of every open page!? Thought it was a problem with Juno, but NO! People PC had the same problem. Like others who've replied, it is only on MY computer, NOT my husbands Laptop. I am running Windows XP Home Edition SERVICE Pack 2 with Internet Explorer 7.0. PLEASE CAN ANYONE HELP?Ladychey it's probably best for you to start a new topic so it can recieve the proper attention...

And Welcome Aboard !So is there anyone with a solution?

Solve : Firefox 'copy' option sometimes unavaliable?

Answer»

Occasionally, when I select text in FX I cannot right click > copy, because the option is greyed out, neither does CTRL + C copy the text. I do not know under what circumstances this occurs. Next time it happens I'll screenshot if necessary.

It's not because the page itself is disallowing it because changing tabs sometimes resolves it. It occurs on this site too.

All resolutions appreciated.

My OS is Vista ULTIMATE, maybe that has something to do with it? Hmm sounds strange. Do you have the 2.0.0.5 release of FF? Have it ALWAYS been like this or is it something new? I have 2.0.0.5, as FAR as I know it would have been happening before that. It hasn't happened for a while but I usually notice it when I try to CTRL+C some text and it copies the LAST stuff I had in the clipboard. Again, I'll post a screeny if it comes up again, I don't know when it happens though...What sites ? ?I've only NOTICED it on CH but it hasn't happened recently..Try another keyboard...

install and run Firefox - save yourself from the continuing headaches!

This is merely sweeping the problem under the rug. It doesn't actually solve anything.

This definitely sounds like some SORT of browser hijack, so Shmee, you should do as The Saviour suggests.thank you for the help Saviour i did what you said and now the problems gone. can you maybe tell me why spyware doctor would find something in safe mode that it didnt in regular, thanks again for your help.safe mode stops anything unusual from running in the background when doing a virus/ spy sweep of the puter.... (I think, something along these lines) CBMatt knows for sure why safe mode is the way to go when trying to clean out your puter) < !

I was being sarcastic on my 1st answer but, now or when your clean, you might consider running with firefox in the future with some extensions like no scripts and pop-ups added to your browsing experience............

I have maybe an 80% reduction in infections since switching over to firefox ~In "regular" mode the spyware can PREVENT it self from being detected/removed because it gets loaded at startup, but in safe mode only essential windows components gets loaded so the spyware is no longer able to prevent detection/removal.Quote from: Shmee on July 13, 2007, 04:07:15 PM

I'm sorry for the late post...I've been gone most of the day.

I'm glad EVERYTHING is back to normal...and you're welcome.

Now that your computer is back to norma, you might want to clear your old System Restore dates and start a new one.

You can do this by right clicking on My Computer, selecting Properties, selecting System Restore tab, check the Turn off System Restore box...click Apply and/or OK. Reboot. After Reboot...go back and remove the check mark from Turn Off System Restore. Click Apply and/or OK. Reboot. You now have a fresh Sysyem Restore point.

Keep it clean, my friend!

Solve : rendering problems in all browsers?

Answer»

I use IE6 and Firefox 2.0.04 (I even tried Safari for Windows) and all exhibit the same problems.

When a background is set for a page (.e.g., ), the background doesn't display - the background stays white.

If I go to web sites that have background colors or images (for example my iGoogle page), they display as plain white. This makes the internet a pretty monotoned place. Also, when I mouse over buttons/links that automatically create a dropdown menu, the menu is transparent and extremely hard to read and unusable. I have the latest video driver for my video card. I cannot figure out what's going on.

This seems to have started about a month or so ago after I downloaded an update or patch from Microsoft via Windows Update. I'm running Windows XP SP2.

I've run diagnostics on my video card (dxdiag) and it comes up clean. I"m using DirectX 9.0c.

Anyone have any idea what's going on here? Microsoft broke my browsers! One of those high priority updates WOULD have been IE7, however, you've stated you have IE6.

I don't think you have succesfully downloaded and installed all high-priority updates for your operating system.I have installed all high-priority updates for my computer. The only update left uninstalled is IE7. I'm having the same issue but I have IE-7 and have updated thru dell and windows
help!!!!!!!Try resetting your browsers back to their default settings through the Advanced tab of Internet Options.have done that, uninstalled & reinstalled McAffee,IE-7,checked DRIVERS,ect. have a screen shot if SOMEONE can help with this problem and needs to see what we are experiencing. This problem sounds just like the one I have but I'm running IE-7 newly downloadedHave EITHER of you updated your malware protection and ran full system scans in Safe Mode using each malware product? Make sure you run them one at a time and LET them delete or quarantine what they find.

Once done in Safe Mode...boot back into Windows, normally, and run full system scans again.

Something to try.

Post results, please.done this, Man I'm lost Just can't fix it! I keep leaning to the fack that I have the wrong driver for the video, Is that possible? videos works great! Just don't know have tryed for 3 days now!

Solve : Hullo there.Help please?I think I might have malware..?

Answer»

Can anyone tell me why this HAPPENS? (this mostly happens with myspace.)What OS do you have?
What browser are you USING? Does this happen with other browsers?
What protection do you have?

I'm not sure how well it works, but you can try...
http://www.fixieonline.com/pagefix/somehow it STOPPED happening now.I installed that though,in any case thanks.
I am using FF2 and WinXp Media Center
I have avast cos its free..i just use FFI have my doubts about this being RELATED to an infection, but just in case, you should update Avast and scan with it in Safe Mode.

Also, make sure your Java and Windows are up to date.List all the protection apps you currently have...
If it's only Avast you NEED some beefing up.

I have a Dell computer Intel chip Windows XP with all the updates. I forgot how to look up more specific info to provide. I know i have 1Gbyte ram so that's not the problem.

Any clue I miss watching those quirky videos.I would run Adaware and see what it picks upI have run AdAwareSE and still no result.

I did forget to mention before that after the youtube or flashmedia stop, so does my browser. I can eventually close it out by the task bar and then clicking the the End Now button to the non-responsive window that pops up. I'll click on the browser again to look for something else and it comes up completely blank. I have to restart my computer in order for it to clear or reset.
Have you uninstalled FLASH and attempted to visit these sites again to see if it does the same? youtube viewing capabilities rely on javascrip being turned on and flash media player being installed.

I have uninstalled and installed: Flashplayer, Java, IE7, YAHOO, MSN with no change. It may be the Stopsign software check this out.

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm#ss_notenope still does the same. i bought webroot spy sweeper and found some additional adware but still the same

i went as far as to try it out on msn explorer and guess what i watched the youtube videos for about three hours. LIVE FLIGHT OF THE CALGARIES!

This still doesn't resolve my situation anyone else have a solution?

2600.
