Solve : No msn or exporler, but connected to internet.?

Answer»

Hi,

My internet explorer and MSN (any microsoft products) does not work with the internet even THOUGH I'm connected.

As a result I have been using Netscape and Opera and ICQ which all work fine.

I have TRIED to
-reset my settings to explorer and that didn't fix the PROBLEM.
-I tried to reinstall explorer in add/remove, but when it restarted nothing happened and the icon is gone from add/remove.
-Reinstall from CD, it says that I already have the lastes version so I can't install.

I have no idea what could be wrong, it just stopped working one day after my computer froze while playing an ONLINE game.

Please help. Thanks

Check that your firewall isn't blocking it.Scan for viruses/trojans and manually download and install the latest security updates.

Solve : can't load ANY PAGES, can PING?

Answer»

Hello .. I have a real problem with IE6SP1 on XP-Pro with current MS security updates; IE is unable to load anything other than the "can't load anything ... detect network SETTINGS ... contact network administrator ... check tools/ internet options/ advanced/ security/ use SSL 2.0, use SSL 3.0, use TLS 1.0 "

I've tried to remedy this ... with instructions from MS, theeldergeek.com, kellys-korner.com, the Microsoft MVPS site, and more

I am succesful at uninstalling IE and OE ...

Here's the failures ... (this isn't the actual order I tried them)
-- unplugged the machine's network cable and plugged the phone line directly into the wall ...
-- the whole gamut of start/run/ commands to reset, dns, wintrust, softpub ... the repair utility ... etc
-- downloaded iefix.exe ... a ms tool
-- cleared the TCP/IP stack
-- removed all network clients, protocols, and services ... then re-installed them ...
-- removed all com ports and re-installed them (as outined at HP.com ... it's an HP Pre-load)
-- removed all ISP software
-- removed all internet connections (the ISP auto-cfg ones) then set up manual connection WITHOUT the MS ICF enabled
-- attempted to SUCCEED at re-installing by changing the (correct) "IsInstalled" registry values from "1" to "0"
-- lowered EVERY SECURITY setting from within IE, tools/internet options/security/ ... internet, intranet, trusted, restricted ... to enable and allow anything and everything access to this machine
-- the dial-up numbers are correct ...
-- it's not behind a firewall ... all anti virus has been disabled ...
-- it's scanned after each FAILED attempt of using IE; with current versions of McAfee VirusScan, McAfee Stinger, and Norton too ...
-- I have even PAID Microsoft to send me the complete IE6 SP1 CD for network administrators ...

And all I can do is ping ... I'm guessing the inevitable ... re-install XP ... but I'm not believing that's really going to work without formatting ... Does anyone have suggestions ... am I missing something ...

Thanks in advance!!
Robinwas this an upgrade?or do you dual boot ..i would forget ie6 and go for firefox or avant browsers if this work my thoughts are ie6 should placed in the forget it BIN for good..more holes than you would dream of?Check XP's built in firewall. The upgrade might have turned it on (but its not configured).download a better browser like Mozilla or Mozilla Firefox!
even Netscape works better! try netstat in the c:\>Sorry, I have been untimely at responding, but have had some family health emergencies

--Yes, it's an upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro
--No, it's not a dual boot
--No, MS Firewall is not enabled, we use McAfee Firewall but it is currently not enabled
--This is at work, and of course I use Mozilla at home ...

Interestingly enough, these are HP Pre-loads so here's what fixed it
--I F10 re-booted to restore the disk to its original out of box state, complete with junk

--I stripped the disk to OS, drivers, McAfee VirusScan & Firewall, and some utilites

--created c:\HP SaveC\ off the root of c:
--created c:\HP SaveD\ off the root of c:

--copied the entire c: drive into c:\HP SaveC\ and d: into c:\HP SaveD\

--created c:\WINPro

--Re-Installed XP Pro into c:\WINPro\

--Upon re-boot, as expected, it displayed the "dual boot menu" with choices being "... XP Home" and "... XP Professional"

--Selected XP Home
--Now, there are 2 sets of users in C:\Documents and Settings\
--1st Set is for XP Home .... owner, default, all users etc
--2nd Set is for XP Pro .... owner.A1MAIN, default.A1MAIN, etc
--A1MAIN=machine name

--Copied c:\Documents and Settings\default.A1MAIN\*.* to C:\Documents and Settings\default\*.* overwriting all, continued this for each directory in docs and settings, then renamed *.A1MAIN to *.Pro (this was time consuming)
--Copied c:\WINPro\*.* into C:\windows\*.* overwriting only drivers
--Deleted c:\WINPro

--Re-Booted and again there was a "dual boot menu" selected XP Pro
--Back to C:\Documents and Settings ... deleting and renaming

--Edited boot.ini by 1st deleting all references to XP Pro then changing all "XP Home" text to "XP Pro"
--Ran some registry utilities and did some manual editing removing "XP Home" text

--Back to C:\Documents and Settings ... deleting all *.A1MAIN (which are un-used now)
--Re-Ran some registry utilities and did some manual editing
--copied the entire c: drive into c:\HP SaveC\ and d: into c:\HP SaveD\

--Life is almost good again!

--Loaded Microsoft XP SP1 CD, .NET stuff, Microsoft IE6 SP1 CD, and re-installed utilities
--Loaded McAfee ASAP Service
--Re-booted and Now Life is good again ... for now

--Seems quite peculiar that with lots of time and thought one is able to spoof the OS this simply ... I have attempted to list out the steps I used sequentially, but its likely that there will be uniqueness for most machines that may require something different along the way.

--Please DO NOT assume these steps will work exactly as outlined above for your configurations, and of course follow them at your own risk!! I will certainly NOT accept any responsibility for anyone that chooses to follow the above instructions!!

Solve : Downloading a file with Internet Explorer?

Answer»

Every time i go to this one particular website on my internet explorer, i try downloading a file, i click once on it and it starts automatically downloading the file to my TEMPORARY FOLDER. I want to change that but I dont kno how. I also tried clickin with the SECOND button of the MOUSE and save target as but the second button is disabled on that website. Help me please. what website is this ?why i want to try it and see if it does the same thing...for this website you need to make your own username and SCREEN name(which is free), than try downloadin any games, the website is http://members.lycos.co.uk/romdomain/rom.php?romnumhqllpp=1360%20-%20Pokemon%20FireRed.zip

and that is not the onnly website that does that almost every website that i want to download from does that. You can change the path if you wish to download a file by selecting the 'Save as' button.

By the way, I donot believe ROMs are legal.they are legal if you play if u download them and than delete them in 24 hours. Why would they stop being legal after 24 hours?

I have no idea. thats what it sssays in the agreement, download the rom and delete it in 24 hours, and by the way the save target as dont really works 100%of the time. Does anybody know any other way???I suggest you look on that website for a guide or FAQ as how to properly download ROM's. Perhaps contact the Webmaster.

The way I see it, you should be able to use Save As.

You could try looking for a different browser such as Mozilla Firefox:

The only reason i could THINK it is because, maybe the computer recognised that you have already download that file before and what it does is when you try to down the same file is replace where the file it was before, where in this case it was saved in you temporary. if this is the case did you try to delete you temporary folder, history, cookies and your temp folder too? do that and try again and see the RESULTS if still the same let us know.

PS. Keep it reallThank you everybody

Solve : error on page problems?

Answer»

hi hope you guys can help me
I have a new (PC)computer with XP and IE
I have a CD ROM of a text book which I used on my old PC which loads a base program on the computer and than uses IE to search the CD and display the chapters etc I dont know the proper name but Im sure you know what I mean
But when I click on a CHAPTER to view nothing happens and I get "error on page" at the bar on the bottom of the page, seems the program will not read info from the CD
thanks for the help and sorry for the beginners description
I believe the name you are REFERRING to is 'Folders'

Here is a list of words that may help you better express yourself: OPERATING System Definitions

I donot quite understand the problem, your CD has to be read by using Internet Explorer? Why can you not open it by using Windows Explorer or My Computer?

I have never heard of a program such as that, could you perhaps show US the name?

A different browser may be the answer for you:
Mozilla FirefoxQuote

I believe the name you are referring to is 'Folders'

Well done! Raptor, that is the start, instead of starting.............But he doesn't reffering to 'folder', he is reffering to "hyper links" or "action button". He wants to naviagate via internet explorer (browser), that MEANS he has to click a link in that page, and this page could be in form of HTML (hyper text mark up language) or fla (flash), or even txt (text). My sussgestion to you is, if you know the name of the file you should just start by browsing a cd itself i.e D:\*.* (you do by searching that file from a cd). Other probelem could be that file file your looking for is invalid, not copied properly to the CD. That is why you got that error msg. What was the errorr msg you got it again? is just cant read from CD or cant locate that particular file?

PS. LET US KNOWrobert bolger.....Try....click on ..start , then select ....My computer .......then select your cd drive and with your cd in the drive right click and choose explore......you should be able to look at any file thats on the disk and then right click on the file and choose open with what ever program you wish.

let us know how you make out
Cheers

Solve : can i network through USB??

Answer»

Here is my problem. I just want to install a wireless PC card ONTO my old laptop, but I need IE 5.5 or above. So i try connecting to AOL from so long ago and the mail works, but nothing else does. It might be because the site where i got the access numbers from has like a thing that says "Baud Rate V.90" which might mean it only works with AOL 9.0?? so now im thinking, well maybe i can network my laptop to my computer for a little while just to get the internet CONNECTION...but it has no ETHERNET jack. So..can i network it through a USB??? Or is there an easier way i can do this...like getting IE 6.0 ON A CD!!! I hate how their system works....

thanks a lot
Daviddirect cable connection and wan springs to mind...netgear what o/s silly question i know but it may help your woes You can network through USB using a USB network cable. Price around 15-20 quid. Or connect through parallel/ serial if you laptop has these connections. Or why not get yourself a LAN card that sits in your PCMCIA slot. That way you will have fast reliable cabled network and internet connection sharing. USB network dongles by Belkin are good, plug and play. I have one for gaming, works a dream.
Lots of POSSIBILITIES to connect laptops and desktops. Unless you have a good working knowledge of wireless networking, then i would go for .11g or you may find it slow with 11b wireless. I have 3 laptops and desktops and find wireless unreliable, go for a cable network, cheaper and reliable. Hope this helps.

Solve : Temporary Internet Folder?

Answer»

There are some files in my Temporary Internet Folder that i can't delete. Whats the deal? What sort of files are you referring to? is it EXE, COM, HML, TXT, DOC OR? If you cant delete STRAIGHT AWAY you might NEED to use a bit of DOS to the job.........

PS let use know what sort of file and a name of that fileSome may still be in use and will be removed when you reset the computer. And recreated once you run Internet Explorer. (That is what often happens to the files I cannot remove.)

You should not bother about your temporary Internet files folder too much, it does not take up that much space. Leaving a few files BEHIND cannot do your computer any wrong.

Solve : scanner error?

Answer»

I recently purchased a used scanner, it CAME with 3 installation discs, I installed it and it seems to be on my hard drive, but when I click on the scanner icon, I get this error message, " THE SHELL 32.DLL FILE is linkedto the missingexport SHLWAPI .DLL:SH REG US VALU A ". What does this mean and how do I fix it?
I would APPRECIATE any help to make my scanner work.
Billyboy

 • What Operating System are you using?
 • What scanner are you refering to?
 • Is it a legal copy?
 • Is the scanner compatible with your current Operating System?
 • Is your refrigerator running?

Did you try to uninstall scanner program and then Re-install it again. if so and then problem is still there, my guess is the software ( scanner) is corrupt in your hard disk, or was either wasn't copied properly in the disk and other problem could be maybe you have delete a program that associate with SHLWAP.DLL, shell32.dll and that is why you got that message. There is a link between these two file (1) shell32.dll, which comes with windows and the other file SHLWAP.DLL which i think it comes with scanner, these two file operate together or SHALL i say they share operation. Other problem could be in your registry, and i wouldn't SUGGEST you to go there you have to be a bit of an expert.

PS. LET US KNOW WHAT YOU DID DIFFERENTLY

Solve : out dated web page and address?

Answer»

please help...
i'm wondering how i'm able to delete or get rid of old, out dated web pages or addresses of a formerly active page?

for instance....if a web SITE was once VIABLE and active...but now the web site is closed and the information is no longer relevant or accurate....how can i DELETE or get rid of the ADDRESS? i don't WANT anyone to be able to even SEARCH on this past/previously correct information, which now is NOT accurate. the web site no longer EXISTS...but the first lines, address, etc show up when one does a search on a name or word that relates to the former site.

any help??? thanks.

Sorry, but there is nothing you can do. As long as there are fragments or references in a search engines cache it will still show up. Over time they will expire from the caches. You mean you want all traces of it removed from YOUR computer? You cannot remove it from the online web it self.

Go to:

(Internet Explorer 6.0)

 • Extra
 • Internet Options
 • Clean cache, history and cookies (This will remove all previous browsing history)

Or:

(Windows XP)

 • Start
 • Settings
 • Configuration
 • Internet Options
 • Clean cache, history and cookies (This will remove all previous browsing history)

This will clear (most) traces of previously visited websites on your computer.

Solve : My slow internet?

Answer»

We have 2 computers at home, only 1 of which isn't working correctly. About 2 months ago we got a cable modem (through Service Electric) and a Network Everywhere router. I had both computers running through the router, but one loaded about 20x faster than the other. The obvious problem seemed like the router. My next move was to CONNECT the slow COMPUTER directly to the modem using the USB. The slow computer says its connection speed is 12Mbps, while the one running faster is only 8 Mbps.
Any IDEAS on the problem?

Solve : Passwords that are saved on PC's?

Answer»

Hope this is the right forum to post this, if its not.. just leave me know where to go! Thanks

Problem: Friend of mine has just rang me in hysterics & she said her boss logged into her PRIVATE email account. They only have one PC in the office (only 4 working there) and my friend is the receptionist who WORKS on the computer. Anyway, she has her email password with her internet provider saved (for example, when she types her log-in on the e-mail site, the password automatically appears)

So now she's freaked out of her brain & wants to know how to delete the saved password. She's using Windows 98 & office 2000 (her employers dont have any interest in IT, as you can guess!)

Any ideas on what to do?? THANKS There are many programs you can use in order to help REMOVE private info.

I suggest your friend clears the Internet history, cache and cookies everytime she logs off.

Do this by going to (IE) Extra -> Internet options

or by Start -> Configuration -> Internet Options

You can also use programs such as System Mechanic 4 professional which is equipped with a number of tools that help boost privacy.

Iolo

Or perhaps Advanced System Optimizer:

Advanced System Optimizer

These programs are NOT freeware.

I also suggest that your friends sets all the programs to not save passwords and other personal data.go to tools /internet options/security http://www.windowsgalore.com/windows.95/password.htmThanks to both of ye for the advice & info. I'll pass it on to my friend. I feel so SORRY for her, would hate to have a FREAKY boss like thatIt is unfortunate but we sometimes have to scan the net usage or emails of our employees. We also regularly scan installed programs and in the plant, we have limited the programs that can actually run on a pc to 1 or 2 specific ones. Nobody likes to invade privacy (except for voyeur freaks I guess) but the company has to look out for itself too. If we allowed too much free reign.. who KNOWS what games or viruses would end up installed. It's sad but abuse happens.

I'm not, of course, inferring that your friend is doing anything wrong.

Solve : Computer Icons?

Answer»

2 things, first I registered and did not receive email conformation. 2nd is two part, first is what do the computer icons in the taskbar do and what do they mean? (there is 2 and I figured one is incoming signal, the other outgoing) And why does it seem that sometimes they stay lit up, and then they go dark?
ThanksBill....I am sure you will get confirmation , if not repeat the registration process......There have been some issues with the forum ......but the able administrator has most of them resolved.
On to the second part.......the small icons you see down in the lower right corner are INDICATING various things that are loaded and running....(click on each to see what it is) the two little monitors you see that go on and off are indicating that you are connected to the internet. ( what you are seeing is normal )

Hope this answers your question.

dl65 You must excuse my inept ability to pose a queery. I think what bothers me most is that they go blank and the internet STATUS stops (No incoming or outgoing) signals. When I try to download a picture the screen just stops and the icons are dark. After I hit REFRESH several times they will light upand it will then load pictures. I found a link from here I think it was and downloaded pcbugdoctor. I did what it said to do and it told me that I have corrupt files and missing shortcuts. Could this be what is slowing my downloads? For reference I use spywareguard, spywareblaster, Stopzilla, Avast, and Spybot. Maybe one of these is what is slowing it down? I also was wondering if pcbugdoctor is right, have you or an associate ever used this product and where you satisfied with the end result? Sorry for wanting to know so much, but I work too hard for my money to just throw it away on a useless product.
Thanks, Bill JohnstonBill......The downloading problem.......is this something that has just started ?
I have PC Bugdoctor installed .....but I have to say I'm not all that impressed with it ......when it scans, it removes my icon on the desktop which I use to enable or disable my high speed connection.
Looking at what you are scanning with ........
I would add .....Ad-Aware to that....
http://www.download.com/3000-2094-10045910.html?legacy=cnet
When you D/l Ad-Aware ....be sure to click ....."check for UPDATES" ( they update frequently)
What did pc bugdoctor say you were missing?

dl65

This is what bugdoctor had to say:
Type Scanned Error
Invalid CLSID 3387 15
Corrupt Help Files 35 4
Invalid Shared Tools 251 0
Corrupt Shared Files 1352 12
Corrupt Fonts 338 0
Missing Short Cuts 198 10
Item(s) Scanned 5561
Error(s) Found 41

If need be I have (I think I still do ) Hijack this. I do not know the proper WAY to use it as another forum said something about saving it in its own file so it will not make back up copies of itself. I posted it on another forum, but got no response. I do not want to let it fix anything as I do not know what or how to do this. If it would help I can run it and post it and maybe if there is something wrong someone with experience could spot it. I do not know, maybe there is nothing wrong and my concerns are unjust? What do you think?
Bill JohnstonBill.......Go ahead and let Win Doctor fix the 41 items it found .
Re HiJack this......open it up and run the scan ...........don't do anything until you go to .........
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/htlogtutorial.html

This site will explain what all the entries are and then you can remove the ones that are suspicious..
Take your time and check each item before you tick it for removal. It is a very good program......
When you decide to remove something .......just use the fix checked button........ignore the save log button

Hope this helps you .

Solve : Internet Explorer crashes on certain sites?

Answer»

Ok, I'm running Windows98 SE, with all the updates WindowsUpdate says I need. I just recently started having a very annoying problem with Internet Explorer. Whenever I go to certain instances of a SITE, IE gives me a popup message stating "Mocrosoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." It goes on to tell me that any data I was working on 'might' be lost, has a check box to restart IE, and asks me to send them an error report.

There's a details link for the error report, which has this on it:
"Appname: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName: msvcrt.dll ModVer: 6.1.8293.0 Offset 000154a7"

It then gives me a general description of the data to be sent, then gives me a link to a privacy statement and the technical data in the report That link gives me :

"Exception Information:
Code: 0xc0000005 Flags: 0x00000000
Record: 0x0000000000000000 Adress: 0x000000000780154a7"

This data is followed by -reams- of in-depth information, apparently dealing with actual memory modules (starts with 'Module 1'). There's a ton and a half of it, and I have no clue what it all means.

The sites I'm having trouble accessing all have some sort of banner ad or flash animation. Megatokyo.com and Homestarrunner.com, as well as Penny-arcade.com all have this problem. The thing is, I can get to -some- instances of the site. I noticed this when one of the webcomics worked for me, but crashed when I went into the archives. By typing in the last part of the URL manually, I could get to more of the comics I'd missed, but not all. Based on this, I -think- Internet Explorer has developed a dislike for certain banner ads or animations, maybe due to a corrupt file.

I'd recently redownloaded Spybot just before this problem occurred, and I did use the Advanced mode to lock settings changes and changes to my home page. Other than that, I didn't mess with any settings, or install any other programs. I've also had Spybot running before (though not with the advanced options on) without any trouble. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling JAVA, uninstalling/reinstalling Spybot, and reinstalling Windows over my current installation. No dice. Anyway, I'll be checking back to see if you've got any ideas. Let me know what you come up with, and thanks.
try running the repair utility for ie6.
add/remove programs
SELECT internet explorer and choose remove (or change, I can't remember what 98 says)
you will get three options...choose repair.

hope this helpsVoidAngel...Can I assume that until recently you had no problems viewing these sites ? You say you have all the updates necessary......are there any critical upates or just updates that you havent D/l......?
Have you D/l any proprams recently which block pop ups or banners ?
I just visited each of the sites you mentioned and encountered no problems.

let us know

dl65 The only program I downloaded was Spybot. I used the Advanced Mode to block changes to my IE settings, and changes to my home page (under IE tweaks in Spybot's controls). I changed those settings back to default first thing after the problems started; I don't remember if I was able to view the sites with those settings in place. And yes, I've been to them all often. I also have verified that they work on other people's computers, even on my same home network.

As for the updates, I've got all of them that don't involve extra LANGUAGES or tweaks to problems I don't have. (Hrm... Language problem, maybe? Shouldn't crash, but... I'll check that after I try to repair)Er, I don't Have Internet Explorer in my list of installed programs. Wasn't it so embedded in the OS that Microsoft claimed it was an integral part of Windows? Anyway, no dice yet on this alley.
I believe you have to go to your configuration screen and find a tab called 'Windows components' (I run XP and a localized version, so it might be called and placed different)

Where you can tag Outlook, Fax services, Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player and other Integrated Windows components.
as part of the law suit against microsoft, they have to allow uninstalling IE. You can find this in versions 5.5 and above. In 98, you should find "microsoft internet explorer" in add/remove programs(should be in alphabetical order). On xp, its under add/remove windows components.OK, I found IE on my add/remove programs list. It must have been there all along, but I never saw it, even when I was looking for it specifically. I guess I edited it out of my observations because I expected it to be under I instead of M or something.

In any case, I'm still lacking the proverbial paddle. Windows won't let me uninstall Internet Explorer, just add components, or 'repair' it. Which I tried, but it didn't solve my problem. I just have those little red-x image placeholders on sites where I never noticed them before. And by before I mean "immediately before I let frigging Windows 'fix' Internet Explorer."VoidAngel.....I think the little rectangles with the red X in it refers to the lack of java being enabled .......If you go int othe internet options and click the advanced tab scroll down until you see either Microsoft VM or Sun Java
make sure its enabled .......that may just fix things up .

let us know

dl65
I have both. Sun Java is on, but the VM option isn't. I'll go turn that on.
VoidAngel.....Something else you can try is to place the cursor onthe red X ...right click and select "show picture"
This pc does that on occassion.......

good luck

dl65 Yeah, I've tried forcing the pictures, but it still doesn't do it. I turned on everything associated with VM or Sun Java, and I still have placeholders. I don't really care, though. I can live with that. What I can't stand is having my Internet Explorer shut down every time O go to some of my favorite sites, as it continues to do. I've scanned for spyware, viruses, and evil spirits, and it's all come up clean.

However Limewire started acting up today. It goes through the motions of starting up, but before I see even its opening graphic on my screen, my computer locks completely. I can't even Ctrl Alt Del to shut her down. I don't know if this is related, but I uninstalled the program and my troubles yet persist.to get rid of ie this should do it>http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html try another browser....firefox..cant remember if win98se has this option but hear goes...search for the c:\windows\options\cabs folder and next to the scanreg icon is one called setup load your cd-install disk and then click the icon..this will re-install win98se if the option exsists...and win9x does not like ie6...5.5 works just great..or the answer to your problem lies here>http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=184&threadid=830730 choices to use if you wish to do so...Whopee! Solve : Restrict internet access with .htm file?

Answer»

I typed in a little code that some of you might like. It is used so that people must enter in a password using a script prompt, and then it redirects them in a few seconds. I typed in the code below. copy it and save it into your comp as "something.htm" and then copy its location as your home page. To make it redirect to your homepage and make your password, type them in where I put "ENTER PASSWORD" or "ENTER HOME PAGE HERE" . (NOTE: It also prevents right click during the r seconds where you are redirecting so it takes more time to view source, so others probably won't edit it.)

Great post but you might want it in the Website Design forum where it'll be of the most use to coders. Just a thought. This is a nice script and it's the best one I've run across that's useable on servers without CGI or php support.
I've used it on my own webpage (ftp server) and with my IE 6.0 SP1 (fully updated - JVM v.5.00.3810 - Winme) it stops when the redirect begins and that's as FAR as it will go. Locally, on my computer, it works fine.
Using Firefox 0.8 (javascript enabled - SunJava not installed) it works perfectly both locally and on the server.
Another difference between the two browsers is that with IE the page from which I link to the password page turns blank when the password box pops up and with Firefox it doesn't.
I tried putting the domain of my webpage in IE's Trusted Sites Zone so all java is enabled and I also tried changing the value for the time of the redirect (I know very little of scripting) to "0" and removing it completely - same results.
No error messages or other apparent problems..
I wanted to let you know my experience - for whatever it's worth - and, who knows, perhaps someone will come along with a clue for me. I'd love to use it with IE.
Thanks for the script.

Solve : Internet Explorer 6.0 Error?

Answer»

I have a computer that is running Windows 98 SE as an Operating System. It has ben working fine until a few weeks ago.

All of a sudden when I fire up my internet Connection, Internet Explorer attempts to open up as it has been the Browser that I always use. Right away Internet Explorer gives me the little window saying
"This program has performed an ILLEGAL operation and will be shut down". Upon viewing additional details about the error, I get the following "WNMSGUPDT caused an invalid page fault in

I have tried to restart the computer numerous times and still the same problem. I ordered a software CD from Microsoft with Internet Explorer 6.0 on it and I attempted to reinstalled this After reinstaling Internet Explorer 6.0, I am still experiencing the same problem with Internet Explorer. I downloaded Adaware (6.0 - I think that is the version) and ran it. It identified 89 suspecious modules and so I had them removed.

Well that did not fix the problem as Internet Explorer still fails when attempting to open. I have been able to use Netscape 7.1 with some success. I thought perhaps if I VISITED the Windows Update site and downloaded any available Windows Updates that might help. BUT I can not do this using Netscape. So I can't download any Windows Updates unless my Internet Explorer is working.

NOTHING seems to fix the problem. I REALLY don't want to format the Hard Drive and reload everything if I can keep from going that route. Does anyone out there have any ideas or suggestions on how I can resolve this problem with my Internet Explorer ?

Solve : Ping-able?

Answer»

After having taken the tests at http://www.grc.com I noticed that I am still ping-able. I had noticed this before, a friend of mine had TOLD me.

However, I pass all the other tests and my ports are all stealthed. I have both a Q-tec Router and use Zone Alarm Pro. I disabeled most unnecessary services such as file and printer sharing, disabeled my UPnP port and DCOM services, etc.

Am I missing anything? How do I stop my computer from responding to the ping command?
A ping is an ICMP echo request - your computer is obviously configured to respond to the echo request, thus revealing you to the internet.

If you are using Win XP you can disable this by:

Right Click on your internet connection->Properties->Advanced->Enable the Firewall->Click Settings->CHOOSE the ICMP tab->MAKE sure ICMP echo is not checked (shouldn't be by default I belive - once the firewall is enabled).

Not sure if this will work, to be honest (my hardware firewall can BLOCK ICMP echos so its never worried me), but it's worth a try.

Edit: Useful port lister for your reference:
http://lists.gpick.com/portlist/portlist.htmI enabled my Windows XP firewall. I will see if I am still ping-able.

Why did you show me the website with the explanation of all the ports? According to http://www.grc.com (Shieldsup!) all my ports are stealthed. And I passed every test. Except for the ping-able. I will try again now.Quote

Block WAN Ping

When you "Block WAN Ping", you are causing the public WAN IP address on the Broadband Router to not respond to ping commands. Pinging public WAN IP addresses is a common method used by hackers to test whether your WAN IP address is valid and supports a network.

Should I enable this? It is a function that my Router seems to support.Always good to have more info. I'm not sure that the ports grc are displaying as stealthed is the same as the ping port - I think you'll find the former is a TCP/IP ports list whilst the latter is an ICMP port. I'm not a networking guru, so I'm not sure what the distinction really MEANS.

Edit: You got another post in before I submitted!
Yes, enable the block. I would be surprised if this didnt do it - why would you want to be pinged from the WAN (read internet) after all.According to Microsoft's Firewall, being able to be pinged helps in 'solving PROBLEMS with the computer'

Sure it does..more info>http://lists.gpick.com/portlist/portlist.htm#registered

have you checked your security settings in IE?
tools/internet options/ security/custom level/ downloads=enable.

heres a workaround you can use until this is resolved

right click on the file you want to download and choose save.

in the save window, change the extension to something else like ".old"

after it downloads just rename the file to the proper extension.have a look here>http://www.hhosting.co.uk/modtech/support/LucXP.htmwhen i click a LINK to dl it goes to the "getting file information" page, then it says the website is unavailablehttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q181/0/50.asp&NoWebContent=1

dl65 Before installing Internet Explorer 6.0 did you clean your registry?

This might remove old Internet Explorer 6.0 registry entries.

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/regseeker.html - Regseeker - Freeware

http://www.systweak.com/asov2/ - Advanced System Optimizer - Free Trial

Do as the programs tells you.

You donot need both, but Advanced System Optimizer is a very reliable program and it has more functions.bubbles you can try this >http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html or search for the c:\windows\options\cab folder you will see an icon next to the scanreg icon-----------its called setup place you cd-install DISK in and click this iconthis will reload your system and will not distroy any of your files..it will ask you if you wish to save xyz..you chose..ie6 does not LIKE win9x machines..the best one is 5.5 or go for another one like firefox or advant...some say it was supposed to be what ie is nottry installing it while in safe mode.

What are you telling us .....that you have a virus? or you cant get online .........or both ?
What operating system are you using and is your Norton AV current with the latest updates ?

If you are getting this error, you probably have the newest Gaobot(AKA Agobot) virus that disables NAV and blocks your access to security sites (including Symantec).

W32.Gaobot.AFC, W32.Gaobot.AFJ and W32.Gaobot.AFW
Go to .... http://forum.gladiator-antivirus.com/index.php?showtopic=14059

Solve : extremely slow internet?

Answer»

I have CABLE internet so that it is faster than dial-up but,all of the sudden, it is very slow in loading pages. Could the problem be with Norton Internet Security? Or, any othe ideas why it would be so slow. Cable company has been out and the modem is FINE.Quote

Cable company has been out and the modem is fine.

Could you elaborate on that?

Did the situation occur almost immediatly after Norton Internet Security? If it is, then it is safe to assume that Norton Internet Security has not been PROPERLY configured.Quote

Probably means the Cable company has been to her HOUSE and the modem checks out ok.

any othe ideas why it would be so slow

Uh oh.. here comes another discussion on video cards *jk*

I'd point fingers at Internet Security.Quote

1) Peak hours (lots of other people online)
2) Super big WEBSITE you're trying to access
3) A chokepoint on your modem
4) Crappy video card
5) Just about anything else

I can live with that.

Solve : WHY WONT THEY RUN!? >:(?

Answer»

Well, it had been my first time on the computer for like 24 hours (lol i'm addicted and thats a long time). The first thing that I did when I GOT on was to get on AIM.. but i got the "AIM cannot be connected." I figured my modem was slightly knocked "off the hook" So I pushed the ACDC jack in a bit tighter and sat still for a few MOMENTS. Then i got onto Internet Explorer and it worked? I didnt know why AIM didnt but Explorer did. Then I NOTICED that MSN Yahoo and Steam werent CONNECTING either. I got really panicy and looked for odd programs that I found under "add/remove programs" and uninstalled them then restart my computer. So i had to post to see how to set back my changes. When I restored my computer (set for a day ago) it said "Restore Incomplete, no changes made on your computer" then i tried it again... Still nothing. Then I was told by Someone to get ad-aware and spybot and all these things and see if that WOULD work and destroy the problem Nothing, at all, and I called my ISP (Cox Cable) and they say that if the Internet Explorer is running then your internet is up and "We dont mess with third party internetprograms such as AIM"

Grrr, this is really frustrating for me.. I have a lot of work to do that I need those programs..

~Evanwhat o/s is this and do you have a firewall that maybe stopping it...and which programs did you uninstall?

Solve : Home Page won't stay changed?

Answer»

I used Fox News for my home page. When I decided to use something else by going to options, homepage, current, APPLY, ok, it will come up with the new page but the next time reverts back to Fox News. I have tried deleted cookies and made a search of the computer and deleted anything with Fox News. Evidently they have a cookie TYPE file that I am not finding. ThanksWhen you apply a new Homepage only press Apply, donot press any of the buttons UNDERNEATH the bar where you WOULD normally write the adress.

If this is not the issue, look into Ad/male ware removers.

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ - Adaware - Free Trial avaible.

http://www.safer-networking.org/ - Spybot S&D - Freeware

There are more programs to remove Adware and Malware. Look for them on the net. But these two are probably the most well known scanners.I ran "Ad a ware" as suggested. It cured the problem. Thanks
