Solve : Internet Printing?

Answer»

Hello All,

I have a user that when she prints from Internet Explorer 6, the web address does not print at the bottom of the page. It only prints a few letters for the address. The web address shows up in it's ENTIRETY in the print preview but once you try to print it all she gets is a couple letters throughout the address. Any ideas?I'm using IE 7 but it probably works the same in this respect. So, the address should print at the bottom of the page, on the left SIDE, right? Does it always start with the printing of http and later drop off? The the printing SEEM to fade out, or just stop? The only thing that prints is: h ee f E c e c

Weird huh? The font is good, it just seems to print whichever letters it wants too.....Yes, that's weird. Is she using Win XP? Is upgrading IE to version 7 a possibility? No guarantee it'll solve the problem, just a suggestion. Might also try Firefox, which prints the web address at the top of the page. She is on Win XP, brand NEW machine with all updates current. I am going to see about upgrading her to IE7, I had the same thought about that. Firefox is a definate possibility if I could coax her to change over!! hehe Thanks for the ideas

Solve : 'Undefined' is null or not an object?

Answer»

I was unsure where to post this.

My computer is an HP Pavillion a6300f PC
Dual core processor E2180
500gb hard drive
2GB ram NVidia GeForce 7100 videocard
running VISTA HOME PREMIUM
Service Pack 1

Some hours after downloading SP1 i started GETTING this message:

"Internet EXPLORER Script Error

An error has ocurred in the script of this page.
LINE: 909
CHAR: 2
ERROR: 'Undefined' is null or not an object
CODE: 0
URL: file:///C:Program%20Files/Hewlett-Packard/HP%20Software%20UI/Framework/Common/Templates/General/Reminder.htm?

Do you want to continue running scripts on this page? "

And no matter if I click yes or no options it wont go away, I close it with TASK Manager and pops back randomly every other 20 minutes... and my Internet Explorer is not even open!!!
The window it tries to open (and does not loads) shows NOTHING but the date and time the message popped at.

I went to that adress and tried to open the file in Mozilla Firefox 2.0 and it pops a THING that says:

"Windows cannot find "C/Program files/Hewlett-Packard/HP Software UI/ Framework/Common/Templates/general/reminder.htm" Make sure you typed the name correctly"

And it opens a blank page

Anyone knows what is it and how can i fix it?

and if not fix it at least to get rid of the message because it is really annoying

Go Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab, and make sure, you have these entries checked:

Solve : How To Change Your IP Address?

Answer»

Hi,
I wanted to know if I could get some directions on how I could manually change my IP address. There's a sports related website I ENJOY browsing and posting on, but evidently ONE of the moderators has his eyes out for me and anytime I make a post on this IP my account GETS deleted. I now can't register as my IP has been blocked.
I think you can tell from this site I am a civil person, not an abuser, and would like your benefit of the DOUBT in assistance.
I use a wireless router from verizon DSL on my computer, and previously tried unplugging the cord, then turning off the router, before turning it on and rebooting. Nonetheless the IP address is still blocked. Thanks. As you have shown yourself to be a civil person on this forum, I wonder if you cannot work out something with the moderator on the other forum? If they won't let you back on the sports site, is it really worth hanging out there?

I know that's not what you're asking, so I apologize for my rhetoric.

Let's see if someone who knows what they're talking about can help...though it occurs to me that this kind of info might help a troll get back to a site from which he or she has been justifiably banned...The board has a bold policy whereby if you get booted once...it's forever. Nonnegotiable.

I'd go with another...but for what the board offers....there is no viable competitor.
It's HF Boards and it's the place for hockey.
They've got a very large board...and many moderators.This may help: http://whatismyipaddress.com/staticpages/index.php/how-do-I-change-my-ip-address

Solve : Address Bar?

Answer»

Friends the websites which i visit gets stored in the list of WEBSITE in address bar.
How can i avoid to happen that with some websites or remove the total list.
In my college they dosent allow us to visit some website like orkut, facebook etc
Please help meQuote from: Lucky Rathod on March 31, 2008, 06:23:21 AM

In my college they dosent allow us to visit some website like orkut, facebook etc
Then, why are you VISITING them? LOL

Is this on a school computer or your personal computer? If a school computer, I'd think you sites would simply be blocked if you're not supposed to visit them. If it's your computer, then I'm wondering why you're asking the question.

If the web browser INVOLVED here is IE 7, go to Tools, Internet Options, General, and click on DELETE. On the next screen, at least select History; that will clear the history of websites visited, they will no LONGER appear in the address bar.I think all it has to do is with your browsing history. Just delete the history.Quote from: fred333 on April 02, 2008, 08:29:52 AM

The log is clean, so personally, I don't know what is the cause of the slowness.
You may need to reinstall Windows.Well that's unfortunate. That's probably the last thing I wanted to do.

I still ran a speed test and it seems like everything is fine, but it still runs horribly slow.

4054 kb/sec download
1923 kb/sec uploadIt's unclear. You're complaining about your computer slowness, internet slowness, or download slowness?Quote from: shaggy_2005 on March 31, 2008, 09:14:56 AM

That statement sure seems like a contradiction. See Broni's last post.

Well, what's it SUPPOSED to be? Those speeds are a lot faster than my DSL service. What does your ISP say your speed should be?Well both download and internet speeds are slow now. I'm not sure if they're related or not.

I downloaded a 6.2 mb application and it took over a half hour, so the download speed is a definite problem.

I think the internet speed is just a problem with my ISP...at least I hope.Downloading speed depends on many factors, mainly on how busy is server on download page, however 30 minutes for 6MB file is a lot.
Where did you download it from, what file? Does it HAPPEN to other downloads, as well?I've tried different pages just to test, but I just downloaded the poker client for PokerStars.net.

I've also tried with other files and my anti-spyware.

Seems like everything is going slow...regardless of the numbers the speed test shows.I just downloaded that poker client, and it took on average (2 tries) 8 seconds.
At the beginning of this thread, you said, that after running TCP Optimizer things got better. Maybe, you should try it again?
Also, you have wireless connection, right?
Did you try hard wire? I haven't tried a hard wire yet. My girlfriend's laptop is on the same network and running great, so I just compared it to that. I ran the TCP cleanup thing again, and things seem to be running well again.

I'm not sure what the deal is really.

Thanks for all of the help though. We removed couple of things through HJT, and maybe your connection needed some adjustment, using TCP.Well I'm pretty sure it's the connection here that is causing the problems. I was at school awhile ago and it was running perfectly...both browser and download speed.

Once I got back home, it's back to the slow, normal self though.

Weird.Try hard wire, and see, if it makes a difference.

Solve : IE Is out of control?

Answer»

Do you have your XP disc?

If so, click on start > run then enter sfc /scannow (*note the space between sfc/)

This will replace any damaged system files, your personal files will be untouched.

Worth a shot...i believe i did that already i replaced the hard drive and re installed windows. is re format different??Have you tried resetting IE?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737

(I know your problem is affecting FIREFOX aswell but it can't hurt to try. Reset then try IE)

Also make sure you have all critical updates from Microsoft updates...

See if theres any change...i still have the same problem. i am afraid i MAY have to take it somewhere to have it repaired. but i know they will run all the spyware and ad ware scanners and the will have no luck. just like i have. and then they will reload windows. all of witch i have already done and they will charge me $200 dollars and i will still have the same problem. As Broni advised, format the HD then reinstall windows from scratch.

Here's a guide:

http://lifehacker.com/software/windows/geek-to-live-how-to-format-your-hard-drive-and-install-windows-xp-from-scratch-157578.php

Good luck & sorry I couldn't be more help...sorry i have been away/
i formated the hard drive and i have the same problem as before. it acts up before i even log ono the internet.

Solve : Typed report gone on Firefox. Still in cache/cookies??

Answer»

I was typing a report on LiveJournal late at night and 'forgot' to save it. I am very frustrated as this took me a very long time and CONSISTS of INFORMATION I don't think I COULD re-write again.

Since the page was left open and edited for hours, I am wondering if either my laptop or my FireFox privacy settings saved any of that information.

I would pay good money to GET it back. I am fairlyadvanced at computer fiddling, so any advice about digging through my laptop's organs is fine.

Regards I don't think, it's possible.Typed text isn't cached, so no.
Actually the CACHE is only for images so anything else isn't cached. No its not...Quote from: wefr0 on April 01, 2008, 02:59:21 PM

Solve : Web pages not opening on first try?

Answer»

The other night I was wanting to log on to the internet using my laptop. I also wanted to do this adjacent to my PC. I had to change a few electrical plugins around in order to plug my laptop into the power strip that the main computer is on (I powered everything down first). Since then, my main computer won't OPEN the web pages the first time. I have to click refresh at least once and sometimes TWICE to get the page to load. This doesn't happen everytime but a lot. I did system restore, I ran several spyware programs and antivirus programs (found one) but am still experiencing the pages not loading.
What type of internet connection is this ? ?Cable. What BROWSER, Windows version?IE7, XP.Quote from: The Bubba on March 24, 2008, 03:52:55 PM

Is your main computer functioning entirely as usual, other than the browser problem? Did you DISCONNECT your main computer from your Internet cable so that you could CONNECT the cable to your laptop, then later re-connect to the main computer? Quote from: soybean on March 27, 2008, 07:39:24 AM

Solve : IE7 - History folder?

Answer»

I'm using IE 7 on Vista Home Premium, and when I click on a link on a webpage, it is not added to the History folder, and the link doesn't change colour.

Many thanks for any helpDoes it do that on all WEB pages?
Check your color settings in Internet Options. You might have the "visited" color changed to be the same as a regular link.Only on pages I've visited in the last day or so. Also any new pages visited do not go in the History folderCheck your browsing history settings in Internet Options. It sounds like you may have it set to always check for newer versions or you may have too small of a cache.
Tip: Have it AUTOMATICALLY check for newer versions of stored pages, and disk space to use should be around 100mb.It was already set to automatically check, and I've now set the disk space to 100mb; however this hasn't helped! You may have days to keep in history set to zero.Nope!Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab. Click on "RESET" button. Restart computer. So are you saying that the only way to rectify the PROBLEM is to delete all browsing history? No, Reset button puts IE in its virgin state - everything, like add-ons, is disabled.Quote from: Broni on March 30, 2008, 01:50:32 PM

I see, but that would include deleting all browing history, and there's no other way to fix the problem?I can't assure you, it's gonna fix the problem, but it'd be first thing to try.why do you need to save your browsing history?

You MEAN you want to get rid of the "Beta 1" in IE's title bar, right? I'd try the registry CHANGE explained here: http://www.accessmylibrary.com/coms2/summary_0286-12019195_ITM

Specifically,
To unbrand IE, open the Start Run box and type:

rundll32.exe iedkcs32.dll,Clear

Solve : Blocking websites from AOL?

Answer»

Okay, so I learned how to do the oh-so-neat HOSTS file blocking technique, but this has no effect on the AOL BROWSER. Has anyone discovered a way to block certain sites from viewing when USING AOL? It's driving me crazy trying to find a way to do it

I read somewhere that whatever you do to IE it happens to AOL because AOL using IE as a browser, but I've found this to just not be true. I can block sites using Ad Watch by telling it they are pop ups, but AOL STILL lets them through. Arghh! In its NORMAL configuration AOL uses its own version of TCP/IP so the hosts file may not be consulted by the AOL browser.

You may have to contact AOLto see how this is done...

Solve : Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.13?

Answer»

No release notes yet.

http://majorgeeks.com/Mozilla_Firefox_d2248.htmlCould be a nightly build...those still pop up from time to time. They usually are released on MGs, Beta News, Softpedia and Download.com prior to showing up on the Mozilla site. I think it is to try and cut down on SERVER load. Could be wrong.

They also released the Mozilla Firefox Beta 3.0 Beta 5 Pre-release. Sounds like it is getting CLOSE to going live.Found PLENTY on the RC of this version. Google Search

It will probably show at the Mozilla main page after midnight (depending on your time zone)The FireFox Beta 3.0 release is available at Portable Apps if you want to throw it on a thumb drive and take it around the block...

Install it to your thumb drive
Import your Profile
Take it anywhere you want.

TBird as well as many other great Open Source apps are available there as well...

Seeya,
patio.Hopefully the add-on makers will be caught up by the final release of 3.0. I tried it out about a month AGO but hardly any of my add-ons would work. Took all of 10 minutes and I was uninstalling it in favor of 2.0.Use MR Tech Local Install extension to cure this...
It fakes out FireFox to seeing the extensions as fully updated and most ( not all ) will then run.

NICE!!! Good stuff.Least i could do for all the help you gave me...
Again Thanx !Release Notes

Solve : How do you access IE History for Precaching Project??

Answer»

I am trying to find a way to interface with the Windows IE History to use the LIST of URLs to determine which websites should be added to an Offline Cache for mobile users.

When you look in C:\Documents and Settings\SMunz\Local Settings\History from the windows view you see a CALENDAR looking icon for Today and last week. And when you click on these items you can open up a list of the URLs as shortcuts.

When looking at this path from the command prompt I would have expected to see these hidden items even when searching for hidden items.

Is there a way to access the history (guessing a database) to export the URL contents from them to add to a programs focus that will read in a list of URLs and PreCache those sites for Offline Viewing?

Or is there an EASIER method of automating a list of PreCachable web sites, than READING in the History Log?

Thanks,
Dave

Solve : IE6 and Excel?

Answer»

I have a program that runs in IE6 and at times I need to SAVE reports to excel and there is a little link on IE to click on to bring up excel but everytime I do it a small window flashes and then disappears and that's it. Any ideas? Have you tried the ""File" save as method ? ?
Is this a plugin for IE6 ? ?
If so elaborate...It's peoplesoft software running on IE6 and in peoplsoft you have the option to click on the excel icon and your report is supposed to open up in excel then you can save as. The problem is I click on the icon and it LOOKS like exce is going to start then the smaller window opens briefly then disappears and it's done with the process. Does that make any better sense? Yes.
Does OFFICE work properly otherwise ? ?
In other words can you use Word, Excel etc by OPENING them from the Programs menu ? ?
If not then the problem is with Office.
If they work properly then check your settings in the peoplesoft application.
Where does it save the files to etc etc.
It may be saving them properly but to a different LOCATION.

Me too. It's confusing when you first start Flock. You think that the blue (or is it ORANGE?) star is the favorites menu, when really it is a button to add the website to favorites.eh when i first go started on VB6 the tutorial project was a web browser that only allowed you to type in the address and goto the site. What is a "bttr" browser ? ?

Solve : missing scrollbar?

Answer»

Firefox vs: 2.0.0.12

The scrollbar is missing.

It was there one day and gone the next. Did nothing more than shut down my laptop ( Gateway XP AMD Athlon 64, 1 gig ram, 90 gig HD ) and restart it a few hours later.

i know that listing all of the particulars of the computer where the problem exists is RECOMMENDED and i am making a copy in word pad after i post this here now. But another question is why is so much information necessary to figure out why a scrollbar is missing? Does, make, model, hd size, ram size, sound card, graphic card, etc etc etc matter on certain problems?
Os seems to make sense and chip set MAKES sense, but some of the other things puzzle me.
Thanks, BTW i can not see what i am typing now because it is below my field of view and using the up/down arrorrow must be extending the typing area...hopefully hitting enter will post this question.
Thanks
Try creating a new Firefox PROFILE. If the scrollbar reappear we now it is a profile settings that's been messed up.Quote

Solve : Can you find someones location from their email address???

Answer»

Is it possible to locate someones computer from an EMAIL address? If someone sets up an email address in a fake name can you work out who they really are with just that information? I know nothing about computers and a friend is having problems with someone who has done this and we want to know who they are! Many thanksIt is possible but not for the average user.
It would require the email provider and/or internet service provider divulges who is associated with the IP used to send the email.
Providers wouldn't and shouldn't do that without a court order (DEPENDING on the country you live in of course).
The CLOSEST you can come without access to the records of the ISP is usually to narrow it down to the city the mail was sent from. ok thanks. We live in the UK. Would the person have had to of done something really bad for them to give that information out? We are just having problems with some SLANDEROUS remarks so probably not that serious to get a court order. Also what does 'IP' stand for?Internet Protocol.
Every computer connected to the internet have an IP address, computers use these to talk to each other. When you send an email the IP address of the sender is usually appended to the email.
I don't think you will be able to get the ISP to tell you who is behind the IP address unless the case is severe enough to involve the police or you're willing to take the ISP to court.I have no legal background, but PERHAPS your keeping a record / copy of the libel(s) made against you may help at some future point.

Solve : A new kind of internet?

I heard that their was going to be another kind of internet coming out in many years. I heard it's called internet 2 or something. Was this just a project of some kind? You may be thinking about Web 2.0:
http://www.oreilly.com/pub/a/oreilly/tim/news/2005/09/30/what-is-web-20.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_2Internet 2 already exist. It is a network (it's actually a backbone if you want to get technical) with a lot higher bandwidth than the publicly AVAILABLE internet. It CONNECTS various universities, governments and RESEARCH institutes together. It's main purpose is to move very large quantities of data between those connected to the network and to research technologies to increase bandwidth even further.

Quote

Governments and universities are among the first institutions to outgrow the internet's bandwidth limitations. Some universities realized the need for a network that would better support bandwidth- and computer-intensive work, like data mining, medical imaging, and particle physics. This need for a higher bandwidth network resulted in the creation of the very-high-performance Backbone Network Service, or VBNS. The vBNS was DEVELOPED in 1995 by the National Science Foundation and MCI telecommunications company specifically to meet the needs of the supercomputers at educational institutions. The concept of “the next generation of internet” was born. MCI engineered this backbone for the National Science Foundation, but when their agreement expired the participating institutions looked to the Internet2 organization to offer the same service as MCI.

Solve : I am getting Verizon walled Garden Message...I have Cablevision, ????

Answer»

So why am I getting this message?

I am on my laptop, and I have an unsecured Wireless G Router. I was going online FINE until my sister VAIO started getting the message. We called Verizon, they said call our cable company. We did and Cablevision said contact Linksys...

So I call them up and the lady says to unplug the router and see if I can get online...I did and my connection was still connected, but when I tried going online I GOT the Verizon NO ACCESS message and said I cannot go on.

I connected an ethernet cable straight from the router to my laptop(which is how i'm online right now) but my sis is out of LUCK, and the ethernet chord is only so long.

I am also trying to secure the router, but when I go through the setup is says it can't connect after I choose the WEP code...I am lost. I already named the network, but it can't connect at all now.

Any serious help would be appreciated.Double post.

EVERY TIME one of us logs on explorer fires up and makes the system virtually unusable as it is so slow to repsond. and Yes Firefox is my default browser with all defaults on it.hmm.....WAIT a sec.

once you've changed the file so that it opens with firefox, if the icon still doesn't change, then all i can say is i can't help you.

i remember this happened to me before, sometimes the icon just won't change for some MYSTERIOUS reason.

perhaps someone else might know the solution?

Try this then.
In Windows Explorer select "Tools" and "Folder Options..."
Select the "File TYPES" tab and select the htm extension
Click the "Advanced"button and click "Change icon..."
In the new window select "Browse" and find your firefox executable.
(By default it is located at C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe)
Now select the icon you want

That should change it.If it doesn't you need to DLoad and run HijackThis and post a log in the Virus and Spyware section...I'm not 100% sure but I think those icons are IE icons because you were using IE when you downloaded the files.
I think if you downloaded the same files with Firefox they would show as Firefox icons. (I didn't try it)
Interested to see what others think about this.Shouldn't matter what you've downloaded the files with Fed. Windows controls the icons associated with file types not the programs. Besides if icons we're assigned by the program you downloaded them with, shouldn't a downloaded movie file also have a browser icon then? You're right of course Deerpark and your previous reply should solve the OP's problem. I had a similar problem, different symptoms. I am on AT&T/Yahoo, and had the AT&T Self-Support tool....I found the right button on there to click, and it went to work, saying changing default browser to Internet Explorer. My problems disappeared.Quote from: Deerpark on August 29, 2007, 09:30:10 AM

In the new window select "Browse" and find your firefox executable.
(By default it is located at C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe)
Now select the icon you want

That should change it.

Yes it should

Just wanted to add - Instead of restarting for changes to take affect when changing icons or if your icons suddenly become messed up TweakUI lets you rebuild the icon cache so changes take affect immediately.

And for those stubborn icons you can use Iphile to change filetypes not found in folder options & also other icons like hard drives/recycle bin etc etc

The only reason one needs IE is for MS Updates.

I know, it's in beta stages, but I already read some reports about some web sites not being read correctly.... ie tab addon for firefox is fine except for things like activex and the like.

2. real ie...when you hover mouse over addressbar it HIGHLIGHTS it so it is more readable to type in but it's annoying to do that all the time.

3. firefox 3 (or even firefox 4) MAYBE be out before ie8 even gets into the boxes.

4. ie8 ... i'd use if microsoft did good on its webpage rendering promise of compliancy and maybe if it made ie render page somewhat faster and maybe if interface look better ... even though other browser like avant or maxthon available, i don't feel like loading computer with more software than I NEED. i keep microsoft's ie and firefox on computer only preferrably

5. Opera browser looks good in terms of skin but is too strict on web page standards so many web pages don't work right.

Solve : Firefox & automatically opening files?

Answer»

Greetings...

I have noticed that with certain file formats, I am unable to choose the option for having FF automatically choose which application to USE with the file in the future.

For instance, .aac is a music file which I use Wmplayer to play (although aac is a quicktime file - I have codecs installed) but when I open the file in FF, I am always presented with this:

As you can see, the box where I select 'do this automatically...' is shaded & I can't tick it, therefore I will have to always navigate to wmplayer.exe for this type of file.

Is there a way I can have FF automatically open .aac with WMP?

(without installing quicktime!)In firefox click on Tools, Options, click the Content Tab, then click the button at the BOTTOM that says "Manage". There you can choose how Firefox handles most files.
If you don't see the AAC file type there you might be able to get it to show up by right clicking on one and choosing Save As and saving it. That seems to randomly add the file type to the manage list. Thanks Emperor

AAC wasn't in the list (wouldn't you know it!).

Quote from: TheEmperor on March 05, 2008, 10:54:38 AM

According to what I can gather, it's something to do with the type of MIME being sent from the site.

I downloaded a plug-in (Live HTTP headers) to help me to determine what kind of MIME it is - but in all honesty I don't know what I'm looking for (MIME's a new one on me!)

I also downloaded another plug-in (MIME edit) that enables you to manually add a new type of MIME. Looking down the list of already installed types, I saw (for example) application/pdf. Anyway, I noticed while using 'Live HTTP headers' with the site 'application/octet-stream' came up so I added that using 'MIME edit'.

I tried the AAC again & I still have the same results EXCEPT that before I added application/octet-stream the default application was 'aac_auto_file (default)' now I have wmplayer already there (however scrolling down still shows 'aac_auto_file' as being (default).

I'm going to have to have a proper read up on this MIME stuff...

Time for a coffee...It's most likely not your fault...
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Opening_files_using_plugins#Misconfigured_web_server
Quote
Sometimes a misconfigured web server will send a file with an inappropriate MIME type and, instead of the file automatically opening with the browser plugin, an "Opening" dialog box will appear, asking you to either save the file or open it with a chosen external application. This may happen with .wmv (Windows Media Video) files sent as "text/plain" instead of the correct "video/x-ms-wmv" MIME type (see bug 250914, probably related to the fix for bug 220807, outlined here). A Google Groups search shows that this can also occur when downloading .swf (Shockwave Flash) FLIES and, most likely, other types of files for which a plugin is installed, when the inappropriate "text/plain" MIME type is sent. A similar issue can occur with the "application/octet-stream" MIME type [2]. (Note that the MIME type of the file being downloaded will appear in the Mozilla Suite and SeaMonkey "Opening" dialog box, but not in Firefox.) If the problem occurs with some downloads of a particular type file but not others, it is likely that the web server is misconfigured; unfortunately there is nothing you can do in such cases except to CONTACT the website about the problem.
http://kb.mozillazine.org/File_types_and_download_actions

Quote
In Firefox, MIME types that are not handled by plugins do not appear in the Download Actions listing unless you have previously encountered that type of file and checked the option in the "Opening" dialog box to "Do this automatically for files like this from now on", as described above. You cannot add new file types to the Download Actions listing in Firefox, as you can in Mozilla Suite and SeaMonkey. The MIME Edit extension provides the Mozilla Suite/SeaMonkey "Helper Applications" interface as a Firefox add-on.

it is likely that the web server is misconfigured; unfortunately there is nothing you can do in such cases except to contact the website about the problem.

Until I come across another aac file on a different site.I'm starting to regret, I advised you to INSTALL Firefox.....LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLIt's all your blooming fault see!

Why didn't you just let me browse in ignorance?Quote from: neljan on March 05, 2008, 11:57:42 PM

And also because it's the easiest solution! LOL!Seriously, it's Firefox self-defense. If that checkbox was not grayed out, and the file was associated with wrong MIME type (say "text"), and you checkmarked it, all correct text files would automatically open with Firefox.

Solve : Images not showing up on a some websites (mainly Facebook)?

Answer»

Today must have been my lucky day....after turning off all antivirus/spyware/pop-up/phishing blocker I had, I tried yet again to log on and lo and behold....there the missing photos were!

I had tried this very same method at least 3 times in the last week, but it never worked. After the photos were back, I then systematically TURNED on every option I'd just turned off...each time checking to see when the photos would disappear so I could identify the offending program/block, yet the photos never went away. WELL beggars can't be choosers, I suppose!

Things are fine on Firefox and Opera as well.

So thank you to all who helped try to unravel this mystery with me (especially you, BRONI!)

This is great news!!!

I' recommend...
Download, and install CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds. Get "Slim" version.
Read CCleaner instruction here: http://www.jahewi.nl/ccleaner/ccleaner.html, and run CCleanerCool.

Thanks again, Broni!! Your help made me feel as though I wasn't alone in trying to figure this out...especially since I'm not that computer SAVVY. I certainly learned a lot during this (which is always a good thing,) so thanks for that as well.

No problem....run CCleaner...I've been thinking, MAYBE it was/is a problem with some temporary files.Quote from: smilesgirl on March 04, 2008, 06:54:10 PM

What toolbar? Do you mean one of the standard browser toolbars, or an add-on such as Google toobar, Yahoo! toobar, etc.?

Again, what are you talking about? There is no "green stripe" that normally "loads when u open an internet page." I THINK Orkid might be refering to the status bar Soybean lol

Orkid, right CLICK the top grey area in IE & then click 'status bar' so it has a tick next to it.

Here is the SAS log...

I 'cleaned' using them both SAS & the anti-malware software with no changes in the system. I think I'll need to RESORT to plan 'B'...copy over all his 'stuff' to the working profile and delete the defective one.

I found a couple of registry cleaners that were downloaded and installed/run. I suspect, like patio, that one of them screwed up the registry.

thanks for your help

Alan <><

[file CLEANUP - saving space - attachment deleted by admin]Well, after all the scans and testing it still does the same thing so I copied the necessary data to the working profile. It works FINE so I'm going to leave it at that.

Thanks guys for your input and help.

Alan <>< You understand, that infected files (if any left), are still on that computer?Yes. I understand. I believe, like Patio, that this is a registry problem caused by a registry cleaner (one I've never heard of) that caused the problem. He actually had 2 cleaners.

FYI - what was run...AVG antivirus, AVG antispyware, Adaware. Spywareblaster (installed and updated) Superantispyware, MALWAREBYTES Anti-malware, Spybot.

Solve : Chat content being blocked?

No. Go for this: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157I unistalled Abode flash using Broni's link & reinstalled but all I got was

Atleast I know it's not Abode, I checked their site & flash worked fine.

I'm thinking of UNINSTALLING McAfee... Is it a whole security SUITE?
I wish you a lot of patience with uninstalling that THING...Yes it is

'McAfee TOTAL security' lol

I don't know what else to do... it's either that or a COMPLETE system restore I guess?

McAfee may be a culprit. If you want to uninstall it temporarily, you better use their removal tool: http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=4105McAfee is as much fun to get rid of as Norton's...
Let us know if you need any additional tools. Thanks guys

I've had a little think about it & as it's only that one site (that I know of) I'm debating whether or not just to live with it. Theres no guarantee that removing McAfee will resolve the ISSUE so I don't think it's worth the trouble.

She wants a laptop for her birthday anyway, so she'll be using that & my sons not into Bingo just yet

Thanks again... I APPRECIATE your help.

Solve : Firefox tabbed browsing *SOLVED*?

Answer»

Ok, so I've finally gave in & ditched IE for Firefox & I have to say that I'm very glad I did.

I kept IE for so long because I LIKED some of the features but once I found out that I could customize FF to a similar setting as my IE settings then that was it, bye bye IE.

The only little thing at the moment that I think IE has over FF is the way tabbed browsing works. With IE, you see part of a tab to the right of the active tab, when you click that it opens a new tab. With FF, I have to right click BESIDE the active tab in the tab bar then select 'new tab' in the CONTEXT menu.

Also, when I do open a new tab, I see nothing. I have to click on home etc. With IE, you can have the option of having a new tab automatically show your homepage.

do you have any suggestions? I can live with it, but I know how flexible FF is so I was hoping for a tweak/plugin.

ThanksTab Mix Plus...more customisation than you'll EVER need. Thanks Welcome to better browser world I knew you would be happy!

No more unsolvable browser problems

That I want to install the moment the e-mails open.
That is an extremely bad idea and thankfully not possible in any new email client.
Executing when the mail was opened was exactly how MANY email viruses spread a few years back.
Why would you want to do that anyway? Although I would rather not think you were trying to do anything malicious I just can't imagine any legit REASON for wanting to execute a program without EXPLICIT user consent.
If your intentions really are good then zip the file and add it as an ordinary attachment.
No its a peice of software that I downloaded that a few of my FRIENDS were looking for an aren't to pc lit.

Solve : Internet history stored on computer?

Answer»

I HEARD that even THOUGH you DELETE your internet history it doesn't mean that it is COMPLETELY wiped out from your system. I also heard that they are stored on your computer. I was wondering where your internet history is stored if possible.Even after deleting history, it can be found in index.dat file in C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 folder.
CCleaner, for instance, will take care of it.
