Solve : Address Bar? |
Answer» Friends the websites which i visit gets stored in the list of WEBSITE in address bar. In my college they dosent allow us to visit some website like orkut, facebook etcThen, why are you VISITING them? LOL Is this on a school computer or your personal computer? If a school computer, I'd think you sites would simply be blocked if you're not supposed to visit them. If it's your computer, then I'm wondering why you're asking the question. If the web browser INVOLVED here is IE 7, go to Tools, Internet Options, General, and click on DELETE. On the next screen, at least select History; that will clear the history of websites visited, they will no LONGER appear in the address bar.I think all it has to do is with your browsing history. Just delete the history.Quote from: fred333 on April 02, 2008, 08:29:52 AM I think all it has to do is with your browsing history. Just delete the history.I already said that. |

Solve : Slow download speed on brand new ThinkPad?? |
Answer» Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 I still ran a speed test and it seems like everything is fine, but it still runs horribly slow. That statement sure seems like a contradiction. See Broni's last post. Quote from: shaggy_2005 on March 31, 2008, 09:14:56 AM I still ran a speed test ...Well, what's it SUPPOSED to be? Those speeds are a lot faster than my DSL service. What does your ISP say your speed should be?Well both download and internet speeds are slow now. I'm not sure if they're related or not. I downloaded a 6.2 mb application and it took over a half hour, so the download speed is a definite problem. I think the internet speed is just a problem with my ISP...at least I hope.Downloading speed depends on many factors, mainly on how busy is server on download page, however 30 minutes for 6MB file is a lot. Where did you download it from, what file? Does it HAPPEN to other downloads, as well?I've tried different pages just to test, but I just downloaded the poker client for PokerStars.net. I've also tried with other files and my anti-spyware. Seems like everything is going slow...regardless of the numbers the speed test shows.I just downloaded that poker client, and it took on average (2 tries) 8 seconds. At the beginning of this thread, you said, that after running TCP Optimizer things got better. Maybe, you should try it again? Also, you have wireless connection, right? Did you try hard wire? I haven't tried a hard wire yet. My girlfriend's laptop is on the same network and running great, so I just compared it to that. I ran the TCP cleanup thing again, and things seem to be running well again. I'm not sure what the deal is really. Thanks for all of the help though. We removed couple of things through HJT, and maybe your connection needed some adjustment, using TCP.Well I'm pretty sure it's the connection here that is causing the problems. I was at school awhile ago and it was running perfectly...both browser and download speed. Once I got back home, it's back to the slow, normal self though. Weird.Try hard wire, and see, if it makes a difference. |

Solve : Typed report gone on Firefox. Still in cache/cookies?? |
Answer» I was typing a report on LiveJournal late at night and 'forgot' to save it. I am very frustrated as this took me a very long time and CONSISTS of INFORMATION I don't think I COULD re-write again. No its not...Posts like this are not helpful. For one thing, it's too brief. It provides no useful information. If you have a point to make, then say something of substance. Exactly what do you mean? |

Solve : Web pages not opening on first try? |
Answer» The other night I was wanting to log on to the internet using my laptop. I also wanted to do this adjacent to my PC. I had to change a few electrical plugins around in order to plug my laptop into the power strip that the main computer is on (I powered everything down first). Since then, my main computer won't OPEN the web pages the first time. I have to click refresh at least once and sometimes TWICE to get the page to load. This doesn't happen everytime but a lot. I did system restore, I ran several spyware programs and antivirus programs (found one) but am still experiencing the pages not loading. The other night I was wanting to log on to the internet using my laptop. I also wanted to do this adjacent to my PC. I had to change a few electrical plugins around in order to plug my laptop into the power strip that the main computer is on (I powered everything down first). Since then, my main computer won't open the web pages the first time.Is your main computer functioning entirely as usual, other than the browser problem? Did you DISCONNECT your main computer from your Internet cable so that you could CONNECT the cable to your laptop, then later re-connect to the main computer? Solve : IE7 - History folder? |
Answer» I'm using IE 7 on Vista Home Premium, and when I click on a link on a webpage, it is not added to the History folder, and the link doesn't change colour. No, Reset button puts IE in its virgin state - everything, like add-ons, is disabled. I see, but that would include deleting all browing history, and there's no other way to fix the problem?I can't assure you, it's gonna fix the problem, but it'd be first thing to try.why do you need to save your browsing history? |

Solve : A new kind of internet? |
Answer» I heard that their was going to be another kind of internet coming out in many years. I heard it's called internet 2 or something. Was this just a project of some kind? You may be thinking about Web 2.0: Governments and universities are among the first institutions to outgrow the internet's bandwidth limitations. Some universities realized the need for a network that would better support bandwidth- and computer-intensive work, like data mining, medical imaging, and particle physics. This need for a higher bandwidth network resulted in the creation of the very-high-performance Backbone Network Service, or VBNS. The vBNS was DEVELOPED in 1995 by the National Science Foundation and MCI telecommunications company specifically to meet the needs of the supercomputers at educational institutions. The concept of “the next generation of internet” was born. MCI engineered this backbone for the National Science Foundation, but when their agreement expired the participating institutions looked to the Internet2 organization to offer the same service as MCI.from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_2 And here's the official web page. http://www.internet2.edu/ |

Solve : explorer.exe running at 99% all the time - please explain!? |
Answer» Hi, very untechnical lady here asking why my CPU usage is currently 100% even though I have run various anti virus stuff. exporer.exe is always at 99% and the only way for the family to use the PC is to END that rocess and use the taskmanager file option to navigate to other tasks. EVERY TIME one of us logs on explorer fires up and makes the system virtually unusable as it is so slow to repsond. We use Outlook for our email and I understand that this is inextricably linked to explorer. WONDERED if it was possible to route outlook via ,say, Firefox, so that the explorer.exe could be deleted. Have run and am currently running AVG scan which found 3 NASTIES which have gone in the vault.Hello Ajk |

Solve : How do you change certain icons? (Pic)? |
Answer» How do you change icons so it corresponds with the Program it is defaulted with? For INSTANCE in this picture I use Mozilla Firefox for these .htm documents, but the icon is an IE icon. How do you change it so that it shows a firefox icon? Right clik an HTML file and select "open with" then check the box saying always open this type with Firefox. I just tried that and it still has the IE icon.Re-boot for the changes to take effect.or, you can right click > properties > and you can change the program you want to open it with.Do you have Firefox set as your default browser? I suspect not.Quote from: patio on August 27, 2007, 03:45:01 PM Re-boot for the changes to take effect. I did reboot and it did not change. Quote from: JXY on August 28, 2007, 03:29:02 AM or, you can right click > properties > and you can change the program you want to open it with. I did that and chose Firefox and it still had the IE icon. Quote from: soybean on August 28, 2007, 07:23:44 AM Do you have Firefox set as your default browser? I suspect not. and Yes Firefox is my default browser with all defaults on it.hmm.....WAIT a sec. once you've changed the file so that it opens with firefox, if the icon still doesn't change, then all i can say is i can't help you. i remember this happened to me before, sometimes the icon just won't change for some MYSTERIOUS reason. perhaps someone else might know the solution? Try this then. In Windows Explorer select "Tools" and "Folder Options..." Select the "File TYPES" tab and select the htm extension Click the "Advanced"button and click "Change icon..." In the new window select "Browse" and find your firefox executable. (By default it is located at C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe) Now select the icon you want That should change it.If it doesn't you need to DLoad and run HijackThis and post a log in the Virus and Spyware section...I'm not 100% sure but I think those icons are IE icons because you were using IE when you downloaded the files. I think if you downloaded the same files with Firefox they would show as Firefox icons. (I didn't try it) Interested to see what others think about this.Shouldn't matter what you've downloaded the files with Fed. Windows controls the icons associated with file types not the programs. Besides if icons we're assigned by the program you downloaded them with, shouldn't a downloaded movie file also have a browser icon then? You're right of course Deerpark and your previous reply should solve the OP's problem. I had a similar problem, different symptoms. I am on AT&T/Yahoo, and had the AT&T Self-Support tool....I found the right button on there to click, and it went to work, saying changing default browser to Internet Explorer. My problems disappeared.Quote from: Deerpark on August 29, 2007, 09:30:10 AM Try this then. Yes it should Just wanted to add - Instead of restarting for changes to take affect when changing icons or if your icons suddenly become messed up TweakUI lets you rebuild the icon cache so changes take affect immediately. And for those stubborn icons you can use Iphile to change filetypes not found in folder options & also other icons like hard drives/recycle bin etc etc |

Solve : who likes avant browser?? |
Answer» anybody using avant browser? (not to say i don't use firefox at all, it's great and avant seems to be a nice browser using the ie engine) what do you guys think would be good for ie8? To not release it at all ....Quote To not release it at all ....LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLbut heaven FORBID all the sites that is for ie only I don't plan on using IE 8 but I like the fact MS is RELEASING it, because IE 8 is going to be the first version of IE that is web standard compliant. Hopefully this means the end of sites that only render correctly in IE. So I'm looking forward to the release.Quote from: elxr06 on March 06, 2008, 09:43:15 AM but heaven forbid all the sites that is for ie only There aren't as many as you would think...this was an issue years ago but not so much now. The only reason one needs IE is for MS Updates. Disclaimer: Everyone who wants to chime in with " you can do that in FFox ....." i'm speaking in general for the people who don't even know there are other browsers out there.Quote IE 8 is going to be the first version of IE that is web standard compliant. Hopefully this means the end of sites that only render correctly in IE.I know, it's in beta stages, but I already read some reports about some web sites not being read correctly.... ie tab addon for firefox is fine except for things like activex and the like. 2. real ie...when you hover mouse over addressbar it HIGHLIGHTS it so it is more readable to type in but it's annoying to do that all the time. 3. firefox 3 (or even firefox 4) MAYBE be out before ie8 even gets into the boxes. 4. ie8 ... i'd use if microsoft did good on its webpage rendering promise of compliancy and maybe if it made ie render page somewhat faster and maybe if interface look better ... even though other browser like avant or maxthon available, i don't feel like loading computer with more software than I NEED. i keep microsoft's ie and firefox on computer only preferrably 5. Opera browser looks good in terms of skin but is too strict on web page standards so many web pages don't work right. |

Solve : Firefox & automatically opening files? |
Answer» Greetings... you might be able to get it to show up by right clicking on one and choosing Save As and saving it. I tried saving an AAC to my HD but it made no difference, I restarted FF just to see if the AAC would be added but it wasn't... ?Try here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Opening_files_using_plugins Thanks Will According to what I can gather, it's something to do with the type of MIME being sent from the site. I downloaded a plug-in (Live HTTP headers) to help me to determine what kind of MIME it is - but in all honesty I don't know what I'm looking for (MIME's a new one on me!) I also downloaded another plug-in (MIME edit) that enables you to manually add a new type of MIME. Looking down the list of already installed types, I saw (for example) application/pdf. Anyway, I noticed while using 'Live HTTP headers' with the site 'application/octet-stream' came up so I added that using 'MIME edit'. I tried the AAC again & I still have the same results EXCEPT that before I added application/octet-stream the default application was 'aac_auto_file (default)' now I have wmplayer already there (however scrolling down still shows 'aac_auto_file' as being (default). I'm going to have to have a proper read up on this MIME stuff... Time for a coffee...It's most likely not your fault... http://kb.mozillazine.org/Opening_files_using_plugins#Misconfigured_web_server Quote Sometimes a misconfigured web server will send a file with an inappropriate MIME type and, instead of the file automatically opening with the browser plugin, an "Opening" dialog box will appear, asking you to either save the file or open it with a chosen external application. This may happen with .wmv (Windows Media Video) files sent as "text/plain" instead of the correct "video/x-ms-wmv" MIME type (see bug 250914, probably related to the fix for bug 220807, outlined here). A Google Groups search shows that this can also occur when downloading .swf (Shockwave Flash) FLIES and, most likely, other types of files for which a plugin is installed, when the inappropriate "text/plain" MIME type is sent. A similar issue can occur with the "application/octet-stream" MIME type [2]. (Note that the MIME type of the file being downloaded will appear in the Mozilla Suite and SeaMonkey "Opening" dialog box, but not in Firefox.) If the problem occurs with some downloads of a particular type file but not others, it is likely that the web server is misconfigured; unfortunately there is nothing you can do in such cases except to CONTACT the website about the problem.http://kb.mozillazine.org/File_types_and_download_actions Quote In Firefox, MIME types that are not handled by plugins do not appear in the Download Actions listing unless you have previously encountered that type of file and checked the option in the "Opening" dialog box to "Do this automatically for files like this from now on", as described above. You cannot add new file types to the Download Actions listing in Firefox, as you can in Mozilla Suite and SeaMonkey. The MIME Edit extension provides the Mozilla Suite/SeaMonkey "Helper Applications" interface as a Firefox add-on.Quote from: Broni on March 05, 2008, 11:46:30 PM It's most likely not your fault... must be a first Thanks Broni, I did read those pages already & I'm going with: it is likely that the web server is misconfigured; unfortunately there is nothing you can do in such cases except to contact the website about the problem. Until I come across another aac file on a different site.I'm starting to regret, I advised you to INSTALL Firefox.....LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLIt's all your blooming fault see! Why didn't you just let me browse in ignorance?Quote from: neljan on March 05, 2008, 11:57:42 PM Thanks Broni, I did read those pages already & I'm going with: And also because it's the easiest solution! LOL!Seriously, it's Firefox self-defense. If that checkbox was not grayed out, and the file was associated with wrong MIME type (say "text"), and you checkmarked it, all correct text files would automatically open with Firefox. |

Solve : Problem with a missing graphic when u open internet pages? |
Answer» Hello, I am having a problem with internet browse toolbar. What toolbar? Do you mean one of the standard browser toolbars, or an add-on such as Google toobar, Yahoo! toobar, etc.? Quote there is graphic that misses.Precisely that green stripe that loads when u open an internet page.Again, what are you talking about? There is no "green stripe" that normally "loads when u open an internet page." I THINK Orkid might be refering to the status bar Soybean lol Orkid, right CLICK the top grey area in IE & then click 'status bar' so it has a tick next to it. |

Solve : Sending EXE file using Yahoo? |
Answer» I have an exe file that I downloaded that I want to SEND to a few people. That I want to install the moment the e-mails open. I using yahoo. Sorry only used to photo's an I know theres a size limit.Quote from: squall_01 on February 24, 2008, 04:00:43 AM That I want to install the moment the e-mails open. That is an extremely bad idea and thankfully not possible in any new email client. Executing when the mail was opened was exactly how MANY email viruses spread a few years back. Why would you want to do that anyway? Although I would rather not think you were trying to do anything malicious I just can't imagine any legit REASON for wanting to execute a program without EXPLICIT user consent. If your intentions really are good then zip the file and add it as an ordinary attachment. No its a peice of software that I downloaded that a few of my FRIENDS were looking for an aren't to pc lit. |

Solve : Internet history stored on computer? |
Answer» I HEARD that even THOUGH you DELETE your internet history it doesn't mean that it is COMPLETELY wiped out from your system. I also heard that they are stored on your computer. I was wondering where your internet history is stored if possible.Even after deleting history, it can be found in index.dat file in C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 folder. |
