Solve : Can't open page in Firefox or IE?

Answer»

My ISP is Orange and I use their 8mb Broadband package. It has worked okay recently until yesterday afternoon. Now Firefox brings up "Server not found". If I try IE it comes up "The page is unable to be displayed". I tried using "Restore" same result. I then 'phoned Orange and their helpline took me through checking the conections. The computer is conecting to the Livebox. They gave me the numbers 209.85.135.147 to type in the IE address BAR which brings up Google. But if I use Google to search the links have the same result as above. I tried the computer on dial up and it goes on line and works okay. I conected a spare computer which has WIN98 installed and that went on line with Broadband okay. I have run CCleaner in both cleaning and Registry checking modes. Also run the security below in Safe Mode. Nothing found. I tried going on line closing one security program at a time. Still same result. Tried briefly turning off all the security (including Firewall) and TRYING Broadband, still no use.'Phone calls to Orange have just put up the 'phone bill and resulted in going through the same actions four times, including rebooting the Livebox. They say they are checking the line and I will hear from them within 5 working days. Meanwhile I have noticed that at the bottom of IE it says "DNSERROR". I went into Control panel, ADMIN, Tools, Service Shortcuts, DNS Client. It was turned off so I tried turning it on. But this has made no difference.
Should I leave the DNS ON or OFF? AUTO or MANUAL?
Any suggestions what to try please?
Reinstall Windows?
See if the Foriegn Legion is Recruiting?
Disappear into a bottle of JD?
My ignorance is showing, help please!!
I have:
WIN XP Pro
Firefox
Thunderbird
AVG free Anti Virus
AVG Anti Spyware
Online Armour free Firewall
Win Patrol
Threatfire
Spyware Guard
Spyware Blaster
RemoveIt anti virus
A Squared anti maleware
Advanced Windows Care

I check for updates on the above daily.
PS Just using the WIN 98 computer is not an option. It is not mine and just on loan. Can you connect in Safe Mode? No, can't connect in Safe Mode either. But after making my 'phone bill much larger, Orange have said the fault is on the 'phoneline and I have to wait for BT to fix it. AAAAAAAAArrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhh hhh!!!!! So for now it is pay as you go, dead slow dial up. Still not sure what I should do about the DNS though?DNS should be ON, and set to AUTOThanks Broni.
Orange at last have broadband working again. Now all my Bookmarks have disappeared and I am trying to follow the Firefox instructions to recover them. WITHOUT success so far!Documents and Settings/user name/Application Data/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/Default User/Bookmarks......or search your computer for bookmarks.html, or bookmarks.*

Solve : Unable to watch video in IE7?

Answer»

Hi

I recently reinstalled IE7 because of a problem, now I'm having problems viewing VIDEO online.

SOMETIMES I get nothing, sometimes I get a 'sorry not available in your area' pop up message.

I don't remember ever GETTING such a message before I reinstalled IE.

Some sites are ok, like YouTube, but I'd like to be able to VIEW everything... as god intended.

Is there some kind of online test I can do or something to see if it's my browser settings or the websites?

thanks...Will Firefox work? Sample web site will be helpful.Good point Bron.

When I come accross a video I can't watch I'll post back...

Reset your SETTINGS to what they were before and see if the problem goes away. Messing with the wrong settings is a surefire way of messing up your ABILITY to download. What KIND of connection? Using router, or just modem?

Solve : I can't download updates to programs like Avast and Comodo?

Answer»

I'm having a lot of trouble ever since I upgraded from my old reliable but slow dialup to my new, fast, but troublesome high-speed Comcast internet. Let me try and describe these problems for you. First of all, I can't update my programs. I first noticed there was a problem when the popup error box for Avast appeared at the bottom of my screen. When I clicked on it, it said that the autoupdate couldn't COMPLETE. So I tried manually and that failed as well. I also have Comodo Firewall and that won't update either. I just tried to update Ad-aware and no, that won't either. I thought I could download Avast and begin again with an entire new program, but once downloaded, I get an error message and setup won't start. I have a button bar with my favorite websites up at the top of my screen. I have to click on some of these five or six times now to get them to open. This usually happens right after I start the computer or after I close Firefox and once they've been opened, they will open with one click, until I turn the computer off and then the whole thing happens all over again. Sometimes Firefox won't open and I get the cannot find server message. This is usually when first starting the computer as well. I've tried disabling the Comodo thinking that it might be conflicting with the firewall in the router, and I've tried using Windows firewall instead, but that did nothing to solve the problem. I've tried flushing the dns, but that seemed to make things worse. I'm at a loss as to what to do now to solve this problem and it's driving me nuts. I'm about ready to go back to my old dialup--at least when I clicked on something I only had to do it once. Please help!!

I thought I had posted this specs stuff somewhere, like my profile, but here goes:

Windows XP
Asus A7V8X-X Mb
512 mb ram
Comcast Internet Connection
Newgear RouterWhen you say, you tried to download updates manually, and it failed, what exactly happened? With Avast I get the "Error: cannot connect to server" message. With Comodo I get "Error 106: Cannot complete the download process". Ad-Aware just gives me an "Error" message with a big red X. And then also, when I reopen Firefox, or any of my favorite links after they've been closed I get the "Cannot connect to server" message--but with these if I click on them again and again they will eventually open. Not so with the Avast, and Comodo etc. I'm going to try and see if I can download an MP3 from Amazon right now.

Okay, I just did that and I was able to download an MP3 so apparently it's not all downloads. However, as I was using Itunes to hear the song, a message came up that there was a new VERSION of Itunes available and did I want to download it? I clicked on "yes" or "okay" or whatever it said, and the message came back that it was unable to complete the download for the upgrade to Itunes.Try to bypass router, and see, if same thing will happen. At the same time, you may reset your modem (disconnect it from power source for 1 minute).Quote from: Broni on January 16, 2008, 02:05:16 PM

Try to bypass router, and see, if same thing will happen. At the same time, you may reset your modem (disconnect it from power source for 1 minute).

Do you mean disconnect the router entirely and try that to see what happens?Yes. Connect your computer straight to the modem.Okay--I bypassed the router and it's still doing the same thing.1. Run free ESET Online Scanner at: http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/

I think all my problems are cured now. I found that svchost.exe was listed in the blocked applications in Comodo. Once I changed that, it all worked. However, if you see anything abnormal in my logs, please tell me. And thanks again for your help.I'm glad, you fixed it.
Your HJT log is clean.

Solve : Firefox still having problems....?

Answer»

I click on a link in GOOGLE and it ain't showing up right. But when I use IE tab or Internet explorer normally, it WORKS ok. What's wrong?

http://www.gearfire.net/u3-versus-portable-apps/ is the link I went to through google search. I simply typed in U3 VS portable app in goolge's search box and clicked on the first link that APPEARED in the list of searches found.

Here's what I'm seeing in firefox:

And here's what I'm seeing in IE Tab (which should be same as using regular IE):

Maybe it's a firefox bug? I did the search the same way in both cases yet firefox hates the site but IE LIKES it?!!!
Clicking on your link, brings up right page here.I was wondering if it was something to do with my own computer and NOT firefox itself. It's weird. Hopefully no bug for me in FF3. That's why I am consindering reverting back to IE7 until FF3 goes gold.Try to set up new Firefox profile, and see, if same thing will happen: http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/profileOk, I'll try resetting firefox with a new profile and see how it goes.

Solve : Internet Provider Emails not getting through to gov clients?

Answer»

Hi, I'm with a small internet provider. Out emails seem not to be getting through to any GOVERNMENT clients. I have 3 customers with this issue so far. An error message is below:

----- Transcript of session follows -----
<[emailprotected]>... Deferred: Invalid argument
Warning: message still undelivered after 4 hours
Will keep trying until message is 5 days old

Any thoughts on what this could be? I think the first step is to FIGURE out who's side the problem is on. I have a hunch it is us. We're reknown for our spam. Also, seems most of the time, customers can send emails to other addresses no problem. The main problem is with government emails.

Any clues?? Need any more info, let me know! The government has strict security. Especially after the past few years of hacks and leaks. My suggestion is to contact an Government Official who run their IT Dept and see if its is a mail filter issue. MAYBE your e-mail is being BLACK listed or tagged as spam.

DaveCool thanks. After spending the DAY on this, it seems like that is true and they've been notified.

Thanks!

Solve : problems with ie7?

Answer»

I have been using ie7 for a long time. All of a sudden ie7 could not display the website "the nest". After a lot of frustration I found out how to reset ie7. I have done this and now the nest works, but now I can not get the google toodbar to WORK. When I CHECK in my add/remove programs file it is there, but it is not up top with my address bar. Can someone tell me how to FIX this. ThanksPress the Alt key to get the Menu bar (if it isn't already visible).
Select Tools --> Manage Add-ons --> Enable or Disable Add-ons.
The Google Toolbar should be listed there. Enable it if its currently disabled.
If the toolbar isn't listed then press the drop down menu at the top of the window and select "Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer".It worked. Thanks for all your help. Now when I am on a website and I hit the back button it starts to load and then tells me cannot find web PAGE. But if I hit refresh it comes up. What GIVES?Did this behavior start after you re-enabled the Google toolbar?
What happens if you disable the toolbar again?I doesn't seem to be doing it now. But I would really like to have my google back. I also have another question. Before when I would start typing something like a e-mail address or something, it would show up before I finished. Now it doesn't do it. How do I fix this? ThanksI suggest you uninstall the toolbar and reinstall it. Be sure to download the newest version instead of installing any old version you have lying around.

Solve : Thundrebird?

Answer»

I recently dowlaoded Mozilla TB...& like it so far. The only problem i see is the amount of memory it uses when up & running. I READ on here somewhere awhile BACK about a "fix" you can do for firefox so when it's minimized to the taskbar it only uses about 4mb compared to the 30 or so when in the window. Does anyone know a similiar fix for thunderbird..it uses roughly 24mb rite now even in the taskbar. I use it STRICTLY for my business would like to leave it running at all times I'm online.
Thanks! The tweak you can use for Firefox also works for TB.
Here is how to apply it.
(I assume you're using TB 2. I do not know if this works in TB 1.5.)
In TB select Tools --> options...
Select Advanced --> General --> Config Editor...
You now got a new window called about:config with a huge SCROLLABLE list of preferences.
Right click anywhere in the list and select New --> Boolean
Enter "config.trim_on_minimize" as the name for the PREFERENCE (Without the quotation marks).
Select true in the next window and ok.

That's it. Restart TB and the tweak should take effect. When you minimize TB the memory consumption should drop to around 4 mb. Note that over time the memory consumption will still climb even with this tweak. But it should still use less memory than before. And you can always reset it back to 4 mb by maximizing and minimizing it again.
Thanks...I have the newest version so it should work!!Yes it should work fine then, it did for me.

Solve : Connection Problems!?

Answer»

I use a Dell PC running windows XP PROFESSIONAL, and internet explorer. I turn on my computer, and it automatically connects to my wireless NETWORK. It says it's connected and that the connection is "excellent" but I can't actually work online. I've tried plugging directly into the wireless router, directly into the modem, and connecting to different AVAILABLE networks. EVEN though it says I'm connected, I get "The page cannot be displayed" message! Neither of my roommates have a problem connecting to our netowrk. . .I called and had the network reset, and that didn't help EITHER!What Router are you using?

P.S. I already tried redownloading.

Thanks!Anyone? Its only been 30 minutes since your first post, you'll need to have a little patience and SOMEONE will come along.
In the mean time you can post full system specifications for your COMPUTER or provide us with the brand name and model number.
Furthermore, is your windows fully updated?
And do you have up to date graphics card drivers installed?

Besides the fact that IE SUCKS royally, you should take a look in the task manager and SEE what is causing the PROBLEM. Hold down CTRL + ALT + DEL to access the task manager. What is using the most memory and CPU? If System Idle Process is using the most CPU, DO NOT TERMINATE IT.

After a hour of surfing the internet by browser shutsdown and I have to reboot. Running window XP. I have run VIRUS and adware scansIs this just a problem with the internet browser, or will doing other THINGS with your computer result in the same thing happening?

What exactly happens? Does your computer say you must restart, or does it just stop?

Are you using a highspeed internet connection? If so, are you using it via Ethernet, USB, or WiFi? (And is this built in or external?)
I am use high speed and there is no error massage. The browser ( only) STOPS WORKING. When I reboot It will work fine for a hour or so then stop again. Why don't you upgrade to ie7 or SWITCH to mozilla?Quote

Solve : Email password not hidden?

Answer»

A few weeks ago I got a Cowon iAudio mp3 device and have been TRYING to get registered with their support department (I have been having trouble with the verification as my usual email service is AOL, and they are one of the services being blocked by Cowons email server). Anyway, Hotmail is apparently ok and I used my Hotmail account to get fixed up.

What has surprised, and slightly shocked, me was that the verifying email quoted my name, Hotmail email address, and my password in full. I have never come across this before and it has made me rather uneasy.

Am I RIGHT to be wary of this??

Any advice appreciated.Quote

Have never had a problem with IE explorer
Have your knuckles, and a piece of wood ready....Hi Broni. So what is the most common problem with IE ?? Is it dependent on the sites you visit or is it not as quick to patch issues as Firefox? Was told that they were getting better & quicker at fixing things lately.Compare to any Mozilla product, IE has always been:
- less secure browser (IE7 got little bit better)
http://secunia.com/product/12434/?task=statistics
http://secunia.com/product/12366/?task=statistics
- late with patches
- behind with features (it took them several years to COME up with tabs, for instance)
- if you browse through this BOARD only, sometimes it has some issues, which are just un-solvable, short from Windows reinstall

..just to mention some major ones...

Solve : Can't use anything that requires a password?

Answer»

Hello,

IE 7 will not allow me to do anything that requires a password. I can't use hotmail, NETFLIX, ebay, amazon, etc. I can get on the page and navigate around, but after I enter my user name and password and click enter, I get a page that says "Internet Explorer Cannot Display This Page."
Interestingly, I can access my work e-mail, so entering information into dialog boxes doesn't seem to be a problem. I ran a diagnostic and it said for me to check several ports - FTP, HTTPS, and HTTP (I think). I thought I MADE them exceptions to the blocking. I don't know if this is a firewall problem or what. It's really bizarre, and I don't know a thing about computers. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

THANK you!
MeganWill Firefox work with password boxes?Okay, I DOWNLOADED firefox, but I can't get it to connect to the server. The message says if your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure firefox is permitted to to access the web. So, I went to the Windows Firewall and added it as an exception, but still nothing. So, I have no idea if firefox will work with password boxes. What type of internet connection do you have?
What is your firewall?
Are you connected through a router? HARD-wired, or wireless?I have cable internet, windows firewall. I'm not connected through a router that I know of. There's only one computer in the house, so I'm guessing I'm hard wired without a router. I know it's not wireless.Turn off your computer.
Disconnect your modem from power source.
Wait 1 minute.
Reconnect power to the modem.
Start computer.
See, if Firefox will connect.

Solve : PLEASE HELP! URL redirects to www.sedoparking.com/blah blah?

Answer»

Please help anyone?!? So for the last few days I've been having problems when trying to load certain web pages. For instance:

I can type in www.msn.com in the URL bar (using either Mozilla or IE7) and as I watch the page supposedly load down in the status bar (lower left) it says "Connecting http://www.sedoparking.com/msn.com then some other stuff. When the page loads it shows a white screen with a few links to sponsored links and and says www.live.com on the top of the page. The URL box still shows www.msn.com.

I have tried many other SITES such as google.com, yahoo.com, my bank's website..all do the same thing.

I have tried a few things..renewing IP, unconnecting everything and reseting my router, deleting all the history and rebooting..nothing works.

The thing I did realize is it seems to pick up what sites I've visited...as my bank's website worked fine while all this begun..but now doesn't work either. Very frustrating!

So here's the kicker...I ran 3 anti-virus programs and 3 malware/spyware deals both in safe mode and regular XP with nothing found. The thing is this is a work computer...and the 2 right next to me are having the same problem! Not all sites do it consistantly on each computer but it's definately there on those also. We hae someone coming to look at it next week and really my work isn't based off the internet (well not google/msn/yahoo anyway...haha). I'd just LIKE to get this fixed. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you so much.

[file cleanup - saving space - attachment deleted by admin]Also...I have tried a system restore to a few weeks back..(when this problem wasn't happening..) no luck.

I'm usually very good with this stuff...why can't I figure this one out? Have a Read Here follow the instructions and post the info...one of Our Resident Experts will be along to assist...

Solve : IE Browser Closes Randomly?

Answer»

Good morning All,

I am looking for some assistance with my home computer. Evertime I open an IE browser, it loads my home page fine, although anytime I direct it to another site using either the address bar, or the Google search bar, the browser window closes. I do not click on anything or really EVEN move the mouse, but it just shuts the window on it's own. Occasionally I will get an error message saying "The application failed to initialize properly. Press OK to continue" but that only happens once every dozen times or so. I have run a virus scan using Norton Corporate version, and also a spyware check using AdAware.

I am running XP (not an original copy) and IE6 I believe.

This same thing has occured in the past, although not nearly as FREQUENTLY as this (maybe once a month or longer) and never after opening ONE page and not clicking on anything.

It is getting frustrating not being able to have the internet at home... If anyone can help me understand what the problem is, or what I can do to fix it, it would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you very much!!

What exactly do you mean by this? Is it a cracked version?Hi there,

A friend loaded XP on my computer and I think he said it was a burned copy, and he had some sort of registration number key... Sorry, i'm not very familiar with this stuff.

Thanks!!Certainly SOUNDS like an illegal copy to me. Our policy here is to not help with illegal software. I can give you a bit of advice, however. If I were you, I would ask that friend of yours about the copy of XP. Find out how he obtained it. I could be wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's the reason why you are having trouble now. In fact, it's what I would expect. Your best bet right now would be to obtain a legitimate copy of XP. In the meantime, you can give Firefox a try and see how it works for you. Thanks CBMatt! I was afraid of that, but I let him install that copy as he said there would be no trouble. It has been fine for close to 2 years, so I forgot all about it.

I have never used Firefox (I don't even KNOW what the differences are...), but i'll look it up.

Again, thank you so much for your help!!

which means?Hi Broni,

sorry I wasn't clear enough, I meant that, getting a new browser like firefox or anything like that is not a solution for my problem. what if I don't wan't to download that.... thats not the problem the problem is why am I getting this error message and how do I solve it.

Thank you sooooooo much
SuadSuad ......... Ok ......... if you dont want a differant browser...that's your call.
Now then, what operating system are you USING?
Which version of IE are you using ?
Is your computer current with all the Micro Soft critical updates?
Exactly what is the error message you are getting....... and is that the only one you are getting ?
How long has your machine been ACTING up ?
When was the last time you did a normal routine maintainence on your machine?
Do you have the authentic Windows CD should it be necessary to use it ?

To elaborate on this QUESTION...

At the bottom of your error message, there should be a line that says:

To see what data this error report contains, click here.

Click on the link in your error message. This should open a new window. Give us all of the information provided in the Error Signature section (such as szAppName, szModName, Offset, etc.). And of course, please also answer all of dl65's questions.

What version of IE do you have now listed in Add\Remove?

Solve : default mail client not properly installed?

Answer»

Hello,

Hope somebody has the solution to this problem: I am running Windows XP with service pack 2, Zone Alarm Security SUITE (not running Windows firewall or
Windows virus protection), and get MS updates automatically. I am using Outlook Express, have only used this email program, no problems. Now when I try to use a link to send an email I get the error message "default mail client not properly installed".

I have TRIED to download OE from the net to do a new install. The most recent I can find is OE6. I downloaded it, and tried to install it, but it says I have a newer version installed, current installation will not proceed. I guess that means I have OE7. I have checked under tools, internet options, programs, and OE is shown as the default.

I tried registry repair, and all it did was get rid of Adobe Reader and Adobe Flashplayer, which I needed, so I had to find and reinstall both of them, another can of worms opened. I finally got them working again, but now I'm still getting the error message that the default mail client is not properly installed. I can't email business or companies I purchase from. This is a problem that only started about a week or so ago. Any ideas?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

dustman

I suspect some of ZA updates....
OE is a part of Internet Explorer, so, if you have Internet Explorer 7, that means, you have Outlook Express 7.
Open IE, go Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab, click Reset button.
Restart computer.Mea culpa, and I apologize, I didn't warn you, that IE will go to square one.
I'm happy though, your problem got fixed.

Here are a few steps you can take to get your browser to accept cookies.
1. Try signing in again. If your browser asks you to accept cookies, choose "accept" or "continue."
2. Perhaps your browser is not set to allow cookies. Learn how to change your browser's cookie settings.

Solve : Firefox/StumbleUpon password query?

Answer»

For over a year now I have had Firefox's excellent StumbleUpon add-on (is that the right term?) with direct access via the SU toolbar (which appears with Firefox opening page) with no problem. A couple of weeks ago the toolbar options changed from it's usual collection of options to just two - "Start Stumbling... or Sign In", the first to start a new account and the second to sign in with user name and password. Things are ok once you're signed in for that session, but it's a BIT of a chore to do every TIME - there seems to be no "Save Password?" option available. I can't figure out why or how things have changed. Can I get round this somehow? I have queried Firefox, but no reply
.The team behind Firefox will you not be able to give you much support. The Stumbleupon add-on is created and maintained by Stumbleupon.
But you should be able to configure the toolbar to stay logged in.
On the toolbar click Tools and click Sign-In...
Fill in your username and password.
Make sure the box next to "Sign-out when I close the browser" is unchecked and press OK.

Then the toolbar should stay logged in.Thanks for reply Deerpark.

I have re-signed in several times over the last couple of weeks now, and have made sure that the "sign out" box is unchecked every time - it seems to be ok if I come back to Firefox/SU within a reasonably short time (a day, say), but longer than that and it reverts back to the minimal toolbar. I wonder if there is a default setting after a certain period. I also wonder why there is no remember password option for this on Firefox. As far as I know the built in remember password feature in Firefox is only for websites not for add-ons. The creator of the add-on will have to create a password remembering feature if one is required.
I've not used stumbleupon for a while and have just now reinstalled the toolbar to TEST out what you said. So I can't comment on whether you getting logged out is a bug or a feature. I suggest you uninstall and reinstall the PLUGIN and see if that helps.

I'll try and keep it running to see if I get logged out as well. Thanks again Deerpark.

I see what you mean about websites/add-ons - it's no real hardship, just slightly annoying. I'll persevere for the time being and maybe try SU forum pages.

Solve : IE error has to close?

Solve : IE7 - Close all tab box "pop-up"?

Answer» Problem 1:

When surfing the net sometimes, the "Do you want to close all tabs?" box just pops up sometimes, and will not go away until I click "close".

It has happened while accessing various websites.

Also, yesterday, I tried accessing the Netflix website by typing the address in the address bar, but when I clicked to go, IE7 automatically closed. I tried accessing the website through a link on a search page, and the site came up, but IE7 closed when I clicked "Member Login."

Problem 2:

I like to use tabs when surfing, instead of the back button. When surfing sometimes, my "right click" option stops working. If I don't close a few tabs, the links stop working also. I mean it acts as if I'm low on memory, but I've checked the resources and that is not the case.

I have run a full system scan through Norton and Microsoft Live and no items were found. I have also tried Windows Updates. And I'm not sure if it's RELATED, but yesterday the font on my PC changed to italics, and I can't change it back. I've tried in the display properties, but the italics button is "grayed out."

System info:

Slot 'A3' has 1024 MB

I would appreciate any assistance or suggestions you guys could provide.Just wanted to "bump" this up, as I'm still looking for some help.

I also thought of something else with my IE7. I cannot access excite.com at all. If I type it into the address bar and click go, nothing happens. If I try to click a link from a search page (any excite.com domain link), nothing happens.

I checked my restricted SITES to make sure that it didn't ACCIDENTALLY get listed there, and it's not.

Any ideas?Will Firefox WORK OK?

Solve : Firefox 2.0 is not allowing me to view embedded videos from YouTube?

Answer»

This is an example of what I am viewing, nothing, utter nothing. The picture has blank spots, and this blank spot SHOULD have the embedded video. This is the first time this has happened and I have enabled the following in FF:

Java Plugin.
Flash Plugin.
No blocks.
Enable Java.
Enable Flash.

http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/games/8402_Iris_vs_Sea/vod

The above link provides a VOD that I want to watch, it works with IE, but not FF. I can watch videos on Youtube fine, it's SPECIFICALLY this place I have issues viewing embedded videos, I do not use any block or anything and I use to be able to view videos on this forum. Can someone please? It works fine on my FF 2 so it's not a FF ISSUE.
Start with uninstalling Flash Player with Add/remove programs and then download the newest version from here.
If that doesn't help then disable all your add-ons, restart FF and try the video again.I know the issue isn't FF, and I did UNINSTALL and reinstall it, same CRAP. Any other suggestions?Create a new profile in Firefox in order to determine whether any settings have been corrupted.
Close Firefox completely.
Select Run from the Start menu
Type the following without the quotation marks "firefox.exe -ProfileManager" and hit enter.
Go through the Create Profile WIZARD and start FF with the newly created profile.

Don't know. What virus protection are you using?

Are you using Yahoo Mail Classic or the newer version of their mail? Does it make difference whether you only choose one contact for a message or multiple contacts?

I use Firefox most of the time, but I sometimes use IE 7 and I do have a Yahoo Mail account - although I don't use it very much - and I have no problems using it with IE, whether Yahoo Mail Classic or the newer version of their mail.

Do you recall making any changes, installing or uninstalling something, about the time this problem started? Any changes in your browser configuration? Other than this problem with Yahoo Mail, are you having any problems with IE? Do you have a Windows RESTORE Point prior to the time this started? If so, going back to such point may be worth a try. I DON'T KNOW WHAT VERSION OF YAHOO I AM USING. HOW DO I FIND OUT? NO IT DOES NOT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE HOW MANY CONTACTS I CHECK, 0 OR MANY. In this case, who knows what's going on on your machine...

We better start here:

1. Run free online scan at: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Post HouseCall log.

2. Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users:
http://www.superantispyware.com/

Print these instructions out.

SUPERAntiSpyware should be run in Safe Mode.
To enter Safe Mode, restart COMPUTER, and keep tapping F8 key, until menu APPEARS; pick Safe Mode; you'll see "Safe Mode" in all four corners of your screen

* Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
* An icon will be created on your DESKTOP. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
* If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here: http://www.superantispyware.com/definitions.html.)
* Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
* Click the Scanning Control tab.
* Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
o Close browsers before scanning.
o Scan for tracking cookies.
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
* Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
* Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
* On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
* On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
* Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
* After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
* Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
* A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
* If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
* To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
o Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
o Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
o If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
o Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.
* Click Close to exit the program.
Post SUPERAntiSpyware log.

Solve : Can I temporarily block all web/internet access to my computer??

Answer»

Hi, hope this is the right place for this question.

I recently switched from a DSL cable connection to a wireless network connection thru a router to share internet access w/ my house mates. I often leave my computer on overnight for various reasons.

I'm wondering if I can block off the wireless internet access somehow, by closing off ALL ports for ALL internet access easily -- messages, web, e-mail, etc.

I used to USE Norton Security & it had an option in the firewall to do just that -- block all access thru all ports temporarily, w/ the click of one button, & easily switched back on. I figure it would be useful to do this in the small chance my computer gets ID'd for phising expeditions or whatever when it's on for long periods of time.

Is there something in the Microsoft control panel that does this? I've searched around & can't find anything.

I've tried to use "search" on forums but I either don't know the right keywords to use, or this is simply not something that anyone else does or is concerned about.

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 tower, 512K RAM 2.34 Ghz; using MS XP home edition; i use IE 7 & Mozilla browsers. I don't use Outlook for mail, just the calendar. I currently use the Microsoft firewall & the free verion of AVG 7.5 virus & spyware programs for security. I use a Linksys Compact Wireless -G USB adapter to connect up to the house router. The router (also Linksys, I'm pretty sure) was set up w/ password to keep others from leaching off our internet connection.

So, is this not something to even worry about, and if so, how can I easily block & unblock all internet access from my computer, while my USB connection is LEFT on?

An additional question is, is there some other security concern I should be aware of? This is the first time I've used a wireless connection, I've always had DSL cable connections in the past.

Thanks in advanceI am not an expert by any sense of the imagination but here is what I do::
Go to START, CONNECT TO, highlite the net work that shows tha you are connected,
hit DISCONNECT.
Repeat the operation in revers order in order to re=-connect. Good luck, JIMI agree with jim.mar. The easiest would be to simply disconnect from the wireless or disable the wireless netcard when you don't wish to be connected to the network. You have to know that a wireless LAN is the LEAST secure configuration out there, but it is handy and in fact, one that I personally use. Why would you want to arbitrarily shut it down if you installed it for the express reason of sharing your connection with your roomies in the first place? As long as your personal PC is setup as the hub with password protected user and admin accounts, the average home pc user is reasonably secure and I think that you're being somewhat paranoid, IMHO. I sure wouldn't want to sign on with someone who always had his finger on the off button. If your looking to block of your mates from getting on just make a password to your computer acc, like admin and password it.

Other than that just do what Jim.mar said it works great.

thanx, this is what I was looking for but missed for some reason as I went thru the control panel.

I was just wanting to disconnect my own PC from the internet while working on docs or leaving it on w/ charts/websites/etc. already to go when I want to get reconnected, w/o turning things off & on & losing that.

It's probably just paranoia on my part to worry about leaving it attached to the internet for long periodsJust because you may be paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you...

You didn't quiet follow my instructions.
You're supposed to download everything (no install, yet). Uninstall (not disable!) NORTON. Then install all downloaded programs.
Please, re-read my previous post.Sorry that I misunderstood. The only reason I disabled the Norton firewall is so it wouldn't conflict with Comodo.

When I go back to AVG, I should choose SAVE instead of RUN then install it later? Could this be why I keep getting the corrupt files message?

I already have purchased Registry Mechanic. Will CCcleaner do a better job?Look...I listed all steps in my post #11.
UNINSTALL Norton...this is your first step.Sorry if my last post upset you. Having no formal computer training, I didn't understand the difference between DOWNLOADING and INSTALLING. I thought they were both parts of the same process.

Thanks to your help, all IS cool here! Over the weekend I finally got everything done on my computer and began converting my WIFE's laptop. The only snag I ran into was DOWNLOADING AVG. On my dialup connection, the download took over 5 hours.

Twice on my computer and once on my wife's, I learned during installation that several files were corrupt and a fresh download was required.

All's well that ends well! I'm happy to say that both computers are now working fine and, I think they may even work better!

Thanks, Broni (Claus?, Santa?) you made it a merry Christmas in my household!!!! Alright, so when I open FIREFOX, usually when I type a word into the ADDRESS bar, it will search google.com for me, however now I get a "This page cannot be DISPLAYED error". However, that's just the beginning of my fiasco. Internet EXPLORER seems to work for most sites, but, on BOTH browsers, when I try to go to google.com or like... altavista.com, it takes me to this page:

Any help with what this cPanel crap is and how I can fix my Firefox? Also, I'm using a MODEM, not a router if that is any better information. ;pYour browser is getting re-directed...

Solve : problems with internet explorer 7?

Answer»

Hi

Wondering if there's anyone who can help.

Have today installed IE7 on my computer (Windows XP) and unfortunately I have lost my normal home page.

Every time I log on to internet I get the 'customise your settings' page, with the MESSAGE 'Thanks for Choosing IE7'. Even though I've gone into internet options and made sure my home page is set as I want it I still get this annoying page up. I have even had a go at customising my settings and saving them but this BLOODY page still keeps coming up. Does anyone know how to fix this please

debsIs this the page:

If so, there is the solution:
http://www.pcdoctor-guide.com/wordpress/?p=3691
You can use any of three options.Have clicked on the button at bottom titled "Choose your settings"? My hunch is this, if you do that once and follow through with it, you may then be able to change your home page. Hi Everyone

It won't let me post a reply as it says I have already done it!!!! I cannot do anything on a computer at the moment, hence this new post.

Re the first answer, yes this is the screen I get.

Re the second answer, yes of course I've done this, there seems to be a problem saving the settings...is this the reason it keeps taking me BACK to the page?

I've tried the solutions in the pc-doctor guide.

The first solution run 'gpedit.msc' windows cannot find so this did not work.

The second solution run 'regedit' did work to a point. However, I could not find the RunOnceHasShown' file so this did not work.

The third solution I did what it suggested, however, when I go on to the internet I get a message saying

SECURITY WARNING THE CURRENT WEBSITE PAGE IS TRYING TO OPEN SITE IN TRUSTED SITES LIST. DO YOU WANT TO OPEN:

http://go.microsoft.com
http://runonce.msn.com

When you click yes I get back to the same page that has caused a problem in the first page, when I click no I get the page MICROSOFT CANNOT DISPLAY WEB PAGE

Help!!!
the attached comes up and when I click yes it takes me back to the customise setting page so I FEEL no further forward.

Any fixes would be appreciated

Cheers x

If RunOnceHasShown key doesn't exist, you may need to create it, and assign it value 1.
