Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.8.1.11) Gecko/20071127 Firefox/2.0.0.11

2. Find your profile folder, which by default should look something like xxxxxxxx.default.
3. INSIDE your profile folder, find the file called persdict.dat and open it up in your text editor of choice.

Solve : Firefox redirection problem?

Answer»

Can SOMEONE explain this to me?

When I'm on MySpace immediately after a page finishes loading it redirects to the "LOVE Calculator" website.
When I see all those sms scams on tv I'm irritated nevermind everytime I load a page on MySpace.
It sounded like a virus to me but there are some unusual aspects of this problem:
It only happens on MySpace and it happens on other accounts I sign into. What does this sound like to you?

I think it MIGHT have started around the time I loaded a website from a GOOGLE search and it went to the page then appeared to redirect and start loading a pdf. file? Out of nowhere. After that, Firefox froze and the computer was working slow for the rest of the day.

I just thought I'd add that as it might be specific to a particular virus that you know of.

Thanks!Visit our Virus and Spyware section and follow the instructions for posting your logs...So it's definitely a virus? Has anyone else had this problem? It sounds like a virus.

Does it happen with Internet Explorer?I'm not SURE.. But at one point a "pop-up" was blocked by Internet Explorer. That could have been it. Seeing as MySpace doesn't have pop-ups.

Solve : Need help with a web page...?

Answer»

This may not be important in the overall scheme of things, but it bothers me no end. I'm not very proficient when it comes to browsers and the web. I use FireFox 2.0, on a dial-up connection and a homepage that is basically a news, weather, sports type. The top part of the page has a section that is divided into the above categories. It cycles each category to the forefront to briefly, very briefly, show its content, then switches to the next category. You can stop this, with the function keys below it, but this SWITCHING does not work well with my dial-up. There seems to be a conflict with the timing and it "hangs" after a short time, almost like it's confused as to where it's supposed to go next. Is there anyway to disable this function within the browser? I would like to move from one section to the next, on my own terms. There doesn't APPEAR to be any help from the pages' owners.
I was ABLE to set the length of time that the entire page refreshes itself, but not this. Below is a link to the page. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

http://en.canoe.ca/home.html

Note...Please don't suggest the newest FireFox, as it does not support my ISPs accelerator.

You're referring to the upper left part of the page, right? You have a Pause and Play button there, so I don't see the issue here.

I think you may not be able to resolve this on a dialup connection. That website is a very busy one; I mean the home page is loaded with stuff. Do you have any high-speed/broadband Internet services in your area?

Solve : please help...internet explorer does not work?

Answer»

I have a problem with my computer. I am unable to access internet explorer on my computer. It simply appears and disappears WITHIN a second. However, the other 2 users on the computer have access to explorer. I noticed that when they are online, there is not a header or footer displayed on IE. It is simply BLANK. ALSO, the other users are unable to upload any ATTACHMENTS to e-mail. Normally on the yahoo page, there is a tab that says (attach file) and only a small portion of that tab appears. The other users also are unable to download anything as well.

I have had some people tell me that the problem lies in my internet options. I got to my control pannel and hit internet and network connection. However, the icon for internet options is now missing!

Please help

Solve : How to load old webpage saved somewhere on hard drive?

One time I was looking at someone's myspace page and somehow it loaded this person's myspace page from 2 years ago. It must have been saved somewhere in my temporary internet files or SOMETHING.. I tried loading it again and it doesen't seem to be "saved for offline BROWSING" how can I make this old page pop up again?OK, I found the temporary internet files. theres a huge list of gif and jpeg files. The HTML documents don't seem to load properly. I'm using IE on a 5yr old computer running winXPWhat is it you want to do here ? ?

OK, I found the temporary internet files. ...
Some of the files related to the page have probably been deleted, perhaps long ago. After all, Temporary Internet Files are supposed be just that, temporary. Many computer users routinely run a disk cleanup utility to REMOVE Temporary Internet Files, but most systems will remove them after some set time period, anyway.well this old page somehow popped up one time in my IE browser.. I have BARELY used the computer since then. I can sit here and look at thousands of jpeg files that were attached to old WEBSITES, or somehow, maybe I can find the page itself. Like I said, The html files saved in this directory seem to have a hard time loading properly.Because they are all remnants of bits and pieces of a webpage......scroll on.

Solve : Highlight text working intermittently in IE?

Answer»

Hi all,
Not sure why, but for some reason I am not able to highlight text on web pages in IE8. It does work eventually, or ocassionally, after I click and click. I am unable to focus in on the text i want, though. If I click and click, some text will eventually highlight but not NECESSARILY what I want. I switched out mouse, so that's not it. I went from IE 7 to IE 8, same problem. It's a fairly new problem, and was not occurring before.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!Does "click and click" simply mean double click or what? If you mean double click, I think you should say that; don't say click and click.

What I see with both Firefox and IE is that a double click will highlight, i.e. select, a word. Clicking a third TIME will will select the paragraph in which that word is located. The speed of clicking is a key factor is getting this to work right. And, of course, you can change mouse settings that will affect this by accessing the control panel for mouse settings.

When you "switched out mouse", did you INSTALL the software/driver for the new mouse?

By the way, I recently tried IE 8 in my WIN XP system but quickly REMOVED it. It was sluggish, compared to IE 7.

Solve : Can't open Internet Properties or attach files to my e-mail?

Answer»

Karnac,

I understand. Thanks for all of the help. Funny, I keep getting bumped out of this site. When I try to write or modify a post, suddenly I am a guest and not because of time on the site.

Also, I tried to copy the log into the spyware forum and no luck. It worked in the personal message but not again. Maybe it knows you are trying to kill it. Just kidding?

Thanks again
BrendaNo Brenda, they know, and a lot of them come with databases of blocked sites built in so you can't get help from AV sites, FORUMS, microsoft, etc.
I think that's what it is. It seems on the surface that I have certain programs but when it comes to having them function, they don't. It's like they are a false front, a shell.

Man, this has been an education. Did DOWNLOADING IE8 cause all of this?Well, like I said many posts ago, all my problems started with IE8......as soon as I downloaded IE8 dozens of malicious script alerts hit my antivirus, crippling the internet access to a point where I could only stay online for 2-3 minutes at a time, then I would reboot for another 2-3 minutes.....I rebooted over a hundred+ times, got fedup and then reinstalled XP with a new harddrive, which I was prepared for(all backed up)......Hope you get back on your feet soon. Thanks again, Karnac.

All the BEST to you.

Solve : IE 6.0 and i-NAV - IE application error?

Answer»

I get an application error when CLOSING Internet Explorer 6.0:
IExplore.exe - Application Error The memory could not be "read"

It seems to have different outcome on different computers, with Windows XP and IE 6.0, when I try to get rid of this message.
Usually it's enough to delete TEMP files and disable all i-NAV options, but on some computers this will not help.

Can anyone help me on the question what effect i-NAV has in IE 6.0, and why there are different outcomes? Please help me know what is i-NAV is?

Google gives me:
Quote

The i-Nav plug-in and its components are provided to you free from VeriSign

Indicative Net Asset Value (iNAV)

Scottish singer Susan Boyle trades frizzy gray hair for style

From your post the i-NAV is not compatible with IE 6 because you tried TWO different computers. So, do you not want to use FireFox 3 instead?
I could find this on google though, so I'd say t should be compatible:

"The i-Nav plug-in is compatible with Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP and runs in Internet Explorer 5.0 and above."

I'm using Firefox on my computer, but due to some restrictions for someone I know, they're not able to use Firefox or any other version of IE than IE 6.0

I found a website regarding i-NAV, http://idn.verisign-grs.com/plug-in/support/#helpg1, but it doesn't say anything about the error message that pops up.

Do you know any other ways to get rid of this error, as disabling i-NAV doesn't always WORK?

Thank you

Solve : Something I'm not understanding?

Answer»

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this. I wasn't sure since the thing I'm trying to do has to do with the browser. Trying to understand some instructions at Microsoft site http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299824
on opening Powerpoint presentation through the webbrowser. There are some instructions at the bottom of the page that I'm trying to understand. It's on
editing things with the registry. I'm not even sure exactly where the registry is
located either.
Here are the instructions and then I'll tell what I'm not understanding-
Change Default Mode of Opening Presentations
Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to VIEW the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/ ) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

You can add a registry key that controls how a PowerPoint presentation is opened by a hyperlink or from the ADDRESS box in a Web browser. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate and click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PowerPoint.Show.8
3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:
Value name: BrowserFlags
Data type: REG_DWORD
Radix: click Hexadecimal
Value data: a
4. Quit Registry Editor.

The value of a causes the presentation to be opened in edit mode. The value of 8 causes the presentation to be opened in a new window in show mode. The value of 0 or the absence of this registry key causes the presentation to be opened in the browser window in show mode.

What I'm not understanding
On Step #3 where it's saying to add the following, are they trying to say I need to type out Value name:
or do I just type out what is after the :
So like do I just type out Browserflags
or do I need to type the whole thing? Value name: Browserflags

Thanks,
Amy Hi Amy,

Could you tell US what it was you were trying to do that caused you to look for support please?

Are you just trying to open a powerpoint presentation in your internet browser?

If so can you tell us what browser you are using please (ie..Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, etc..) ?

Could you also let us know what version of the browser it is that you are using. You can do this by clicking on help in the menu bar at the top. Once the dropdown menu appears click on "About Internet Explorer", this message will differ depending on the browser you are using but it will start with the word "About".

Many thanks!

Regards,
MMAmy, you only need to type "Browserflags". But I suggest telling what you were trying to so. For example something to do with your browser. Hi,
Yes, I'm trying to open the PowerPoint presentation in the browser.
I took an online computer class at the college here a few years ago called Computer Concepts and Applications, and the assignments we did said we could open it in browser and we can see how it looks as a website.
I'm using my mom's computer at the moment due to all the problems mine is having at the moment due to spyware and all. I have a friend who is helping me with it. He is going to help me wipe out the hard DRIVE and then get everything working again and the internet set back up and stuff like that.
Anyways, her computer the browser that is working the best at the moment is Mozilla and it says it's Firefox 3.0.8 but then also in that same box or screen near the bottom it says other things Mozilla/5.0(Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0. Gecko/2009032609 Firefox/3.0.8

She also has Internet Explorer but it isn't working right anymore due to spyware that keeps popping up this screen and trying to sell us some type of Virus thing. So, no way to use it anymore at the moment with what is going on.

The only other things I get confused about at times too is what format to save the documents in. Like when I go up to file and then save as, in the section that says Save as type:
It has a list of several things-
Presentation (*.ppt)
Single File Web Page (*.mht; *.mhtml)
Web Page(*.htm; *.html)
PowerPoint 95 (*.ppt)
PowerPoint 97-2003 & 95 Presentation (*.ppt)
Design Template(*.pot)
PowerPoint Show(*.pps)
PowerPoint Add-In(*.ppa)
GIF Graphics Interchange Format (*.gif)
JPEG File Interchange Format(*.jpg)
PNG Portable Network Graphics Format(*.png)
TIFF Tag Image File Format(*.tif)
Device Independent Bitmap(*.bmp)
Windows Metafile(*.wmf)
Enhanced Windows Metafile(*.emf)
Outline/RTF (*.rtf)

I'm never exactly sure what to save things as. I even get confused too when scanning images with my scanner what extension to give it? Like .gif or .jpg?
It seems if I put .tif for an extension then when I try and open it in my browser, it wont work right. .ppt is the current powerpoint extension. Use that one. Why not to use PowerPoint Viewer 2007: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=048DC840-14E1-467D-8DCA-19D2A8FD7485&displaylang=en (free)Not sure if I'm understanding this. Will it allow me to view it through browser as a web page? Or do I need to just save it as web page?
I also changed it back to a .ppt extension, but the only thing I don't understand is it seems if I put it as .ppt then there is no way to publish it as a web page.
So, if I wanted to use it for my web page, then don't I need to save it as web page?
meaning with an .html extension?
The only other thing I'm trying to understand too is if I click on the save as web page option, it tries to save it in the my documents folder. Is that the correct folder to put it in? See, it's using my mom's computer. I guess the other thing too I'm trying to understand is that if I put it in that my documents folder, could that CAUSE us to get hacked or anything. I'm really scared about all that stuff since we keep having so many problems with all that stuff and don't understand all this stuff very well on how to protect things.

Yes. You need to save it as HTML or HTM(Which Ever). That should work but you also need the powerpoint viewer.

Solve : Is it possible to run/have 2 browsers??

Answer»

I'm having login problems with Facebook on IE7 (have posted it under software), but it does work with Mozilla. My wife USES Apex NUTRITION which does not work with Mozilla but rather IE7. Until I get her Java issue fixed, (also posted) we have to share computers. Anyway to share browsers? I've got RUNNING IE7 and Mozilla FF along, and they both go just fine.Try to go to an earlier version of internet explorer like IE6 and try again. You realise you can have both browsers running at the same time...correct ?Actually I did not know that. I didn't know if they would compete against each other and cause conflict. Use too much memory? So I would still just pick one to use as default? If Apex runs on IE and Facebook on Mozilla, will it matter how I get to each program or what is up and running? Nope.
Shouldn't BANG heads at all...
It's just like having any other 2 apps running at once...
LOL...when testing webpages I have about 5 different browsers open.

Solve : Please help with: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"?

Answer» HEY, can someone please help me?

When I try to access the internet, Internet Explorer comes up with the following message:

"Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"

I have tried going to different webpages, e.g. google, yahoo, optus homepage, but they also failed to load. My computer says that it is connected to both the wireless reuter and the Internet, and I can access the Internet from a different computer, so I don't think there is a problem with my Internet CONNECTION.

I just removed a virus from my computer yesterday, but i don't think it is caused by the virus. The virus had prevented me from accessing most of my applications/programs, such as Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer, system restore, ETC. but after using ComboFix i was able to remove it and am not experiencing any of the problems that it had caused.

Immediately afterwards, I was even able to go onto the Internet and log into msn. It worked normally, but after half an hour or so, whenever I tried to click on a Google link, it kept on getting redirected to another page. Msn was still working though Internet Explorer wouldn't display the page. I tried restarting my computer, and now I keep on getting the same message. Everything else on my computer is still running normally.

I think there is something wrong with my Internet settings or DNS. Does anyone have any ideas as to what's wrong and how i can fix this?

Thanks. When you try to open your computer is it very slow?I am in the same boat. When I attempt to access I E from the desktop icon it takes upwards of fifteen minutes to CONNECT sometimes.I have no idea what is causing this.Very frustrating to say the least...When I start my computer it usually takes it a while to start up, so there's nothing strange there.

I checked my network connections and all icons show that i can connect to the wireless network and Internet quite easily. The wireless network has excellent connection and the icon also shows Internet connecting normally as well, without always disconnecting.

However, Internet Explorer just won't display the webpage. I also can't sign into Msn. I tried troubleshooting Msn and it says there is a problem with either my DNS server or key ports. >Dump IE.
You only need it for Windows updates anyways.I downloaded Firefox but the only option the program gives you is to make it the default browser. What if you don't WANT to do this?...Say no. See, if Firefox works. It is done automatically. You do not have the yes or no option. You can change it later. Does Firefox work? That's what important now.Have it in my toolbar now.Does it have a news page like Google and Yahoo? Can I iconize(?) it to the desktop?OK. Can you access web pages using Firefox?YesGood. That means, you have IE problem. What version is it?7Try to install IE 8

Solve : "Save as..." crashes my browser?

Answer»

I am using an Acer 5050-3242 laptop w/ an AMD Turion MK36, 2.0 GHz processor, 100GB HDD, 1GB of DDR2 Memory, & the OS is Windows XP Media Center Edition.

My issue is that when I try to save files (right-click -> Save Image As . . .), I have to do it within one second, or else it crashes my browser. I've tried this in both Firefox and IE, with the same results on both. (I posted this in Firefox, as that is my predominantly used web browser.)

As I mentioned, if I save it to whatever folder a file was last saved to, it will save as the original filename . . . but only if I press 'ENTER' as soon as I left-click on the 'Save as . . .' option. However, if I try to alter the filename, select a different folder, or even change to a new file type (i.e. change a *.gif extension to a *.jpg) in Paint, for instance, it crashes and I lose the project. I even tried to copy [CTRL+C] the project and paste [CTRL+V] it, with no luck -- the clipboard couldn't read/paste after the "crash". I even tried to paste it into Word, with no desirable results.

I've ran both the AVG 7.5.519 and Ad-Aware 2007 softwares, plus I emptied out my cookies & temporary internet files. The only thing I haven't done is restart my laptop. I guess I'm afraid to do so, in case it's a virus that would take control of my laptop.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance for looking at my issue.Restart is first, very basic step to solve problems.
If, after restarting, the problem still exist, start Firefox in its Safe Mode: Start>All Programs>Mozilla Firefox>Firefox (Safe Mode)How much free space is on this HDD ? ?Re: Broni
I don't restart my laptop more than once every 2 weeks. I dunno, just a pain to have to wait to get online, I guess. I will try your idea tomorrow, though. Thanks for the info!

Re: patio
My HDD is divided into 2 drives. In the C: Drive, 499,023,972 bytes (475MB) are left over; 43.8 GB is the max for this drive. The D: Drive has a max of 44.3 GB, with 27,103,887,360 bytes (25.2 GB) free.

I have attempted to transfer files from C: to D: via two windows opened, but Explorer [and Dr. Watson] create an error MESSAGE and they close before I select what files to "drag and drop" or even anything at all is moved. I do know a little about MS-DOS (a.k.a. "Run . . ." in XP), but not that experienced in all the key command words.

I tend to read into what people say, but from what I guess: there isn't enough space on the C: Drive to run Windows PROPERLY. I can attempt to clean out (move) files to the D: Drive to free up space.

Thanks for the help you two!Quote

You'll need 4-6GB free on this HD for Windows to OPERATE correctly. Thanks for the quick response!

I will try to free up that much space on the C: Drive. As a rule of thumb, would that be the only reason why the errors are happening? Is there anything else known -- such as program software issues or viruses -- that would cause the odd experiences that I've discovered? It's hard to say. I doubt, it's a virus. With lack of free space, weird things happen.Sorry for the delay in replying. I just restarted my laptop 10 minutes ago, after I transferred data to the D: Drive. I currently have 7.30 GB of free space, out of the 36.5 GB max for the C: Drive.

After the restart, I tried to send a file attachment via Yahoo mail. If I know the file location, it processes fine. However, if I have to search throughout the computer's folders for the file, it crashes my Firefox browser. Also, I tried to save a picture to the hard drive, which crashed my Firefox yet again.

I'm about at my wit's end. I've restarted the laptop, as suggested, and I've freed up space in the laptop for Windows to run properly.

Are there any other options to help me out?Next step...create new PROFILE in Firefox, as described here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Manager

Solve : Explorer and USER.EXE?

Answer»

Hello,

Yesterday, (March 20th) I downloaded and installed a firewall from download.com CALLED Filseclab Personal Firewall. Now I keep getting error messages from Explorer and Xfilter.
I will list them below:

EXPLORER caused a general protection fault in module USER.EXE at 0004:0000233e

XFILTER caused an INVALID page fault in module XFILTER.EXE at 016f:00427890

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 016f:bff7a388

These errors happen right at the same time. Explorer is usually first, then Xfilter. After that, both programs shut down. I don't want to uninstall the firewall because somehow it caused the page loading in my internet connection to SPEED up exponentially. I just need these error messages to stop.

I'm using Windows 98 and Internet Explorer 6.0.
I have Hijack This and CCleaner installed if information is needed.
Thank you.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/262998Hello evilfantasy,

I used the link you provided, but I can't seem to find any info about the error messages I've been getting. Do you have any more suggestions?Quote from: Haseo on March 21, 2008, 10:15:22 AM

This error can be TRIGGERED more than one instance. Did you try the suggested fix in the link?Hello evilfantasy,

I tried the suggested fix, but I already know that the problem is caused by software, and that software will not load in safemode. It's a firewall that I obtained from download.com called Filseclab Personal Firewall.

These two error messages appear more often then the "General Protection Fault" that appears. It's probably a compatibility issue. I still have a 98 that I use now and then and many programs say they work with win98 but the truth is they simply don't.Hello evilfantasy,

Just last night, I installed the Opera Browser onto my computer, and now everytime I close the browser, I get this error message:

A few suggestions.

Under System Tools, System Information, Tools, System File Checker you will be able to extract any file from the install disk or check all files for missing, corruption or date etc. and replace them.

You can Rename the existing file and extract a fresh copy from your Windows 98 CD

Solve : IE cannot display web page.?

Answer»

IE 7 has suddenly started to come up with the message "Internet Explorer cannot display web page" I have no problems with Firefox and Outlook Express works correctly.

I have used the CONNECTION diagnostic which indicates no problems and have deleted all files in the cache. I have tried to follow the instructions on the MICROSOFT site but STILL come up with the same result.

I am using Windows XP pro.

I suspect I have done something stupid but have no idea what, I don't think I have installed any new software and am at a complete loss.

Any suggestions PLEASE?

Did you try to reset/reinstall IE?Yes. But I don't seem to be able to do a full reinstall whenever I try I just seem to get a run of updates. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378
Scroll down to IE7I had tried everything in that KB article without success. It looks as if I am going to have to do a reinstall of Windows XP which is what I was dreading.

Past experience tells me I shall have all sorts of problems with software reactivations etc.Well, if you don't want to go through all that pain, just USE Firefox, or Opera. I don't use IE at all.Cracked it!
Something had changed my Firewall settings.

Solve : gif images too slow?

Answer»

I've got an interesting dilemma I'm not sure how to FIX. First off, I should mention that I don't remember how long I have this problem; I think it's related to my video card or the drivers thereof; I don't recall this being an issue on any other video cards. I don't think it's related to my connection speed: My 100Mbps connection is not a trifling slow connection.

Anyway, the problem is this: For some reason, all animated .gif images seem to download too slowly. This causes an issue, as when I am trying to view said gif, Firefox tries to display them anyway, and I am forced to WATCH them load, frame by frame, very slowly. It is very slow and jerky, then it plays normally once it's loaded every frame.

Thing is, it shouldn't take this long to load all the frames, because I am capable of loading any other format, including .bmp, very quickly.

So, I am posting this question in the Browsers forum for two reasons. The first is that I can't simply buy another video card at the moment, and I have the latest drivers. I was wondering if there was a method, in Firefox, to delay the animation of the animated gif until it has loaded, much like buffering on streaming movies.

Of course, if anyone knows an older set of drivers that work better with .gif images, let me know.

My specs, as they RELATE to graphics, processing speed and internet:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3700+
Video: nVidia e-Geforce 7800
Memory: 3 GB DDR
Internet connection: Comcast cable (100Mbps)
OS: Windows XP SP2

Thanks in advance, guys.
First thing, I'd try is to create new profile, so all settings are gonna be set to default:
http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/profileHold on, nevermind. It seems, on further investigation, that I did not have the latest drivers. A recent forceware update by nVidia corrected the problem. So... never mind, it's okay. Thanks, though.

Solve : Laptop in Italy shows wireless connection, but no web pages can be viewed?

Answer»

My wife bought a Compaq Laptop just before heading to Italy last week to GO see our grandson at Aviano AFB, Italy. She is in a house with wireless router and shows to have full strenght connection to the server, but says IE won't show any webpage just like she has no connection. It worked at our house with same set up in USA before she left. I think it has IE6 on it but not sure. Communication with her is limited to one call a day and I know it must just be a setting somewhere, not sure if it has to do with her being international or not. Any suggestions??Ask her to connect her laptop straight to the modem. Will do. Guess that will prove whether she really as a connection or not. This has me baffled because it tells her she has a strong connection to the wireless in the house.

Thanks for the SUGGESTION. Will post result tomrrow. The strong connection icon shows she has a good signal between the laptop and the wireless router...not neccessarily ANYTHING PAST the router.maybe the problem is the security key, this may have been set up to your home network.

It is possible for a wireless laptop to connect to a wireless network, but if you don't provide the security key, you won't be able to get through the router, and not to the internet.

What she is seeing is an excellent wireless connection to the router. Doesn't mean she'll be able to get on the internet.

I've done "tools" "internet options" "delete cookies, files, offline content, and clear history" and yet they remain...I try deleting them manually but they don't show up on the C drive at all, the only thing there is a Index.DAT file...This is annoying and troublesome...the 2 sits were bleachexile.com and one particular page of a story on fanficion.net. I'm a college student and I use my computer for school and work its embarrassing when SOMEONE types in a address with the same starting letters and those address pop up...it makes me seem unprofessional and explaining is compacted.
Needles to say Anna will not be using my laptop for "just checking on EMAIL" again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a latitude/ d820 and use internet explorer…
http://www.worldstart.com/tips/tips.php/1009There is a SPECIFIC index.dat file which accumulates the url's of every site visited when using IE. This file is a Hidden System file which is protected whenever Windows is running so cannot be deleted using 'normal' methods. However it can be deleted in Safe mode or better STILL by running CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/download it's free but donation can be made.

While CCleaner cannot delete the index.dat file it will flag it for deletion, prior to Windows starting, on the NEXT bootup.

Good luck1. Start> Run

Solve : Proxy settings?

Those users who have laptops continually complain about not being able to access the internet from home. All of them, inlcuding the CEO SEE it as an inconvenience to have to go into the settings of IE and uncheck the use proxy box.

Does anyone KNOW of a way to SET the proxy preferences using a batch file or script that our users could run to set/reset proxy settings? We are using IE6

Just wondering if having lots of icon shortcuts to various programs & websites right on the desktop slows things down
Yes. Your computer startup time depends on it. The more icons, the slower start.
As for real time slowness, it depends on how many startups (background programs) you have.Try to group your icons into folders.
For instance, I have desktop folders named: Utilities, Multimedia, Security, Maintenance, etc.
I have SINGLE icons only for programs, which I use very often. Thanks for the tip Broni. Made things much easier to look at & a bit FASTER too.RocketDock is a nice utility to have as well for this type of thing... Although, by sounds of it you have/had quite a few shortcuts on your desktop so this would then be CLUTTERED, ha.You're WELCOME

Solve : Internet Explorer 7 - Can't access https (secure) sites????

Answer»

Hi - I am running Internet Explorer 7 on my Dell PC, using Windows XP Home.
I am connecting to the Web with no problems but WHENEVER I try to access what I guess is a 'secure' site (such as my Bank's internet banking site) I can't access that page. I receive a message that says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage ...".

Help!

MichaelWelcome aboard

The very first thing to try is to use Firefox, and see, if same thing will happen. Thanks Broni. I have just downloaded Firefox with no problems. However, when I try to access it I get the following message

Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.bigpond.com.

* The site could be TEMPORARILY unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Any other ideas? I have TRIED playing around with the security settings in IE but to no avail.Next thing to check is, if you can connect from SAFE Mode.Contact your bank about this. They probably have someone who answers questions of this type. They should be able to advise you about browser settings required to access their site. And, if you can resolve the problem with your banking site, I'd bet you'll also be able to access other secure sites then.www.bigpond.com is not secure site, so other then "bigpond", and your bank site, are you having any problems with any other site?
Did you try Safe Mode?
What firewall do you use?

Solve : I.E. 7 versus Firefox?

Answer»

Hi Broni,
I use IE 7 and have not had any persistant problems with it (yet). But was curious about something the guys who built my computer had said. They referred to Firefox as a "Dumb Browser" (not in a bad WAY) and did recommend using it if I ever had IE problems...could you tell me what they meant by that?

If feel lucky...I haven't had the kind of trouble with IE that I see in this forum.
Should I knock on wood or something?

ThanksMy main concern about IE has always been its security ISSUES.
Below, you'll find some graphs from one of the main security companies, www.secunia.com.
Look CLOSELY at number of issues, their severity, and how they were eventually fixed.
What is even more important, when some security issue comes up with Firefox, usually there is a fix in matter of hours, with IE, it takes days.

Here we go:

IE 6:
http://secunia.com/product/11/?task=statistics

IE 7:
http://secunia.com/product/12366/?task=statistics

Firefox 1.x:
http://secunia.com/product/4227/?task=statistics

Firefox 2.x:
http://secunia.com/product/12434/?task=statistics

Furthermore...
To me, IE has been always long time behind other browsers new trends (how long did it take Micro$oft to implement tabbed browsing? years?).
With Firefox, and all its add-ons, it's fun to play with them, and adjust your browser to your needs.
IE is just as it is - dull.

This is a very INTERESTING subject, and I'm sure more people will post here with their arguments. I think, I just started with some thoughts. Thanks Broni...think I'll make the switch next time IE acts up.Another thing...
If you look through posts about IE problems, they often starts out of blue, without any serious computer changes, and they are often really hard to fix, if fixable in some simple way.
Also, with the particular problem, some solutions will work for some people, but not for others.

Never had a problem with it up until now

did as you suggested java nope
SkyblueThis may be a bit of a longshot, but how long have you had SpywareBlaster? It's possible that it doesn't like something on the site and is blocking it on IE (it blocks IE and Firefox content independently). It's just a hunch, but for the heck of it, open up SpywareBlaster and click on DISABLE All Protection then try logging in with IE. Any difference? After testing this, go ahead and click on Enable All Protection. It could also be on their end...not the best constructed WEBSITE i've visited lately...CBMatt
Nope tried it on both computers
But thanks anyway

Phoned them and they say they dont have a problem and they can log on at their end with my username and password
could it be my firewall etc??
skyblueIt obviously won't help, but there has been always something wrong with IE.
Constant security problems aside, IE is kind of browser, which one DAY stops working properly for no apparent reason, and sometimes there is simply no solution.
I started with Mosaic browser 14 years ago, migrated to Netscape (used it for many years), went through Mozilla Suite, SeaMonkey, and now Firefox. Using those BROWSERS I NEVER encountered unsolvable problem, like many people, using IE do.
It's just my opinion.

Solve : re-enable right clicking HTML??

Hey everyone..

bumped into a html page(using IE) where i couldn't right click..i know it is hard-coded in the HTML itself..but is there any way to get around it?

thanksSome web pages will do this in order to prevent you from copying things.Quote from: Gilgamesh21 on November 23, 2007, 06:23:33 PM

None, that I'm aware of.If a website doesn't want you to right click, it probably means they don't want you to copy anything.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on November 23, 2007, 09:19:26 PM

Apology accepted...
The only person, who can ALLOW you right click, would be that web page creator. It's in the web page code.
Surely some hackers can do it, as well, but this subject is beyond our board rules. If you must know, there is a workaround for this. However, as has been stated, right-clicking was disabled for a reason, and on this forum, we choose to respect that person's privacy and WISHES. Why is that you wish to use the right-click feature on this web site? A certain picture catch your fancy? Perhaps we can help you obtain whatever it is you want through a more legitimate method.

Solve : Odd IE / Firefox Problem?

Answer»

Just RECENTLY bought a new desktop, Windows XP Pro, having and odd problem with both browsers....
DOESNT matter if Firefox is open or not, when I TYPE any address into IE, it automaticly opens the page in a new tab in Firefox....
I have made sure that IE is the default browser and Firefox is not, yet this keeps happening, having used both browsers for years this is the first time I have ever come across this problem, anyone have any advise?
I have no idea why IE would use Firefox to display pages LIKE this.....Another thing, sometimes when IE starts I get this window....

[saving disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Hmmm, from doing a google search this Null thing seems to be an IE 7 problem, thing is I'm still on 6....
This trouble only seemed to start today after I added a second user to the hard drive....
Maybe this could be moved to the software or hardware forum? In Windows Explorer, go Tools>Folder Options>File Types
Make sure, that following file types are associated with IE, not Firefox:
htm
html
mht
mhtml
shtml
url
xht
xhtml
xml
How do I get to Windows Explorer?
If you meant internet explorer, cant find that option in tools....
Never mind, found it....
How can you tell? I cant really make sense of what I'm looking at....Find the file extension that you want to make an association for...
html, for instance...
Is Internet Explorer listed as the default program?
If not...
Click Change
Browse to find the program you want to associate with html or select the program from a list provided.
For Internet Explorer browse to Program Files > Internet Explorer > iexplorer.exe

Follow same instructions for other file types, I listed in my previous post.

Try MRU-Blaster:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/mrublaster.html

wot exactly does this do? does it just erase the internet sites in ur address bar? becoz i have a similar prob...i have deleted my internet history, yet some sites, even ones that i visited months ago, still show when i type a letter in the address bar! Also can u delete this software after you've used it? thanksQuote
MRU-Blaster is a privacy cleaning tool that scans your computer for MRU (most recently used) entries, cookies and Internet cache files and offers to REMOVE them. MRU entries are left by almost any software, they are used to allow you to access recently used files, documents etc. While they are convenient for most users, they can also reveal details of what you ve been doing, what documents you have worked on etc. For those that would rather not keep this information accessible, MRU-Blaster will do the job. It can detect more than 30,000 MRU items and quickly scans your system, then presents you with a list. Additional features include cookie cleaning (with exclude option), secure file deletion, index.dat file deletion and more.
What you are seeing is the autocomplete feature in your browser...turn it off.My inline autocomplete box isnt ticked tho

I downloaded that MRU blaster but i dont know which box 2 tick in the settings bit so that it'll just delete the saved address bar entries. becoz i dont want it deleting everything! i know its not that important but its just annoyin lolAutocomplete History

Right click the Internet Explore Icon from the desktop and click Properties.

CHOOSE the Content tab > Choose Autocomplete > Clear Forms.

Solve : MS Internet Explorer - don't like ver 7 - want ver 6?

Answer»

My new Dell computer (XP Home) came with ver 7 Internet Explorer. How can I safely uninstall it, and download Ver 6?

I like Ver 6 because I want to easily see who has the Cookies on my computer and be able to remove them, and I want to be able to see who the Temp Files are that are running, and try to delete them.

And - I guess it's just one more thing to learn and my brain is saturated!

Thanks - Don't use IE version 6! Version 7 has a lot better security that will keep you safe online. You can remove cookies and temp files in IE7 like you could do in IE6.
---------------------------------
DELETING COOKIES
You can delete all or some cookies in Internet Explorer.

To delete a single cookie

In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
On the General tab, under Browsing history, click Settings.
Click the View files button.
Click the Name column heading to sort all the files alphabetically, and then scroll down until you see files that BEGIN with the prefix Cookie:. All cookies will have that prefix, and they USUALLY contain the name of the website that created the cookie.
Right-click the cookie you want to delete, click Delete, and then click Yes.
Close the window that contains the list of files, and then click OK twice to return to Internet Explorer.
-----------------------------------
TO DELETE ALL COOKIES

In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
On the General tab, under Browsing history, click Delete.
Click Delete cookies.
When you are prompted to confirm that you want to delete cookies, click Yes.
Click Close, and then click OK.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
TO VIEW TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES

In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
On the General tab, under Browsing history, click Settings.
In the Settings dialog box, click View files.
To delete temporary Internet files

In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
On the General tab, under Browsing history, click Delete.
In the Delete Browsing History dialog box, click the individual button for the type of information you want to delete, or click Delete all to remove all temporary files.
When you have finished deleting the files you want to, click Close, and then click OK. temporary Internet files

WOW! I didn't really THINK there was a way. Your REPLY is a TREMENDOUS help!
OK -- I'll keep it!!!!

Many thanks!

Solve : Firefox is default, IE still opens?

Answer»

I installed Firefox recently, and it's set as the default browser. However, when certain things open, they still use IE. For example, when I click a link in WINDOWS Live Messenger, access my mail accounts through WLM or Yahoo Messenger, click a link that opens in a new window, etc. it still opens in IE.

I've tried using the program found at http://windowsxp.mvps.org/defaultbrowser.htm but it made no difference. Windows sees Firefox as the default, but still opens links in IE. How can I fix this? I'm sure someone has asked this before, but I've searched and can't seem to find it.Open new Firefox tab.
In address bar type in:
about:config
Hit Enter.
In Filter field paste:
browser.link.open_external
Make sure, that its value is set to 3.Oh, SORRY. Meant to mention that before. I found that on the forums earlier and had already checked it. It was set to 3 but it is still doing the same thing.Try my suggestion here. It has worked for me in the past.
Btw. when you click the mail icon in WLM it will always open an IE window. WLM is hardwired to do that. I don't know about Yahoo messenger but it could be the same problem.
Ok, I think I GOT it.

Some programs were set to use IE to open links. As for the rest of the programs, they have no options for changing what browser they open links in, just whatever they feel like I guess. Oh WELL... thanks anyway Also...
In Windows explorer, go Tools>Folder Options>File Types
Make sure, that following file types are associated with Firefox, not IE:
htm
html
mht
mhtml
shtml
url
xht
xhtml
xmlYou could also try resetting FF as default through Program Access and Defaults.Just may jog something from there?I have Yahoo Messenger installed and it opens Firefox in my computer.Problem has been solved with everything except Microsoft programs, which just won't open into Firefox. Oh well, that's Microsoft for ya. Hopefully I'll get all this SWITCHED over to Linux when my new laptop arrives.

Solve : Microsoft Internet Explorer Keeps promptimg password?

Answer»

Hi! everyone, I'm so irritated with this issue of password prompting, Microsoft Internet Explorer Keeps prompting for password when ever i launch it, if don't supply does details it wont connect to the internet, i find this so annoying and time consuming, how can i get rid of this option and launch IE once. the proxy setting is address 10.0.0.1 port 3128, do I realy need to use this proxy info? and i cant connect MSN messanger 8.0 as well i get the error that says check proxy setting, but i can connect to the net while browsing. If i change the Proxy setting wont it affect Internet connection?

please helpSometimes yeah, sometimes nay, but mostly yeah. Look for SETTINGS that will allow you to temporarily bypass or disable proxy settings. Look in the browser settings for never dial a connection and always use LAN.yeah remove the proxy and see what happense, for WHATEVER reason its set to that it shouldent be.. i checked and 10.0.0.1:3128 is not online right now anyways.. , if the login box still comes up change your internet start page..Who setup the proxy ? ?
If the proxy servers aren't online neither will you be...Ask your ISP, if they REQUIRE proxies..Well it was all setup by someone who left the company and i have to work out all this without causing any ambarassment, i still have to get intouch with the ISP and ask them that, but i need to get rid of thid password staff, is there any suggestion on how i can speed up the internet connection? because PAGES take so long to open
