Solve : I have a problem, please help...?

Answer»

Hi, I have a problem with my other PC. It wont open webpages.

in the progress bar at the bottom left, when i try to open a page it says 'resolving host.'

then it just says...

'This web page is not available.

the web page at null might be temporarily down or it may have moved PERMANENTLY to a new web address.'

I tried running a repair on my connection and it came back with..
'Cannot communicate with Primary DNS Server (85.255.112.133).'

can anyone help me?i just found an error code, i hope it helps someone help me

Error 105 (net::ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED): The server could not be found. Is this your own computer or a work one?

Can you access the run command from your START bar by doing the commands below

start > run > then type the word "cmd" and hit enter

If the little black box comes up (the command prompt) type

"ping 85.255.112.133" if this comes back "destination host unreachable" you may have a DNS problem. If it's at your work it may just be the server is down.

If you could follow the instruction below, hopefully this will help

Only do this if you have authority to do so please

control panel > Network Connections > right click on your network connection and click properties > left click once on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" to highlight this option and click on the properties box just below and to the right.

The box that comes up will have an option down at the bottom "Use the following DNS server addresses". If you click on that option to add the little dot in the radio button it will let you put an address in the box. If you put in the "85.255.112.133" number then click okay, this will shut that box down. Click okay on the box that you’re left with on screen. Try to open your browser now and this should hopefully sort the problem.

Oh one more thing.... the 85.255.112.133 is an IP address. If you ever have a problem like this again, just say it's a DNS ISSUE and DO NOT ever give out an IP address on a public forum. This is the type of number that a hacker could use to gain access to a computer. Not trying to SCARE you off, just letting you know.

I hope this helps.... Let me know how you go

Rgds,

Moe moe information about DNS question, here is a good place to start:
http://www.opendns.com/

Some malware is out there messing up the Internet this week.
You may get better connections by changing to static DNS.
thanks for the replies, I will keep them in mind, however, I have just turned my computer on today, and everything SEEMS fine

I dunno why, i feel a bit foolish now

oh well, I will save this incase it happens again though

thanks again anyway

Solve : how to have IE recognize duplicate page views when looking at records?

Answer»

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My question is hard to articulate but I will try. I know what I need is POSSIBLE because it used to work fine but now it does not!

As part of my JOB I spend a lot of time looking at property records from the county websites and tallying up sales. Often there are multiple records for the same property and I am only want to TRACK the record once, not multiple times. I used to know when the record was a duplicate because IE would show the link as purple instead of blue. For some reason, IE is no longer doing this now, what setting do I need to go to to make this work again?

Any help appreciated! So, your question actually pertains to how unvisited and visited links appear in your browser, right? Try deleting browser history. In IE 7, click Tools on the menu bar and then click Delete Browsing History. I suggest you delete Temporary INTERNET Files, Cookies, and History. Close IE and then restart it. Did that make a difference? thankyou for the reply
tried and STILL does not workHi there,

If you go to tools, internet options. On the "General" tab at the bottom you will see in the "Appearance" section a button called "Colors". Click on that and it will give you a page where you can configure the colours there. After doing this clear all your browsing history, close down IE and restart it again. This should work.

If it doesn't work, go to tools, internet options. On the "Advanced" tab click on the "reset" button in the "Reset Internet Explorer Settings". It’s down at the bottom of the box. This will reset IE to back to all it's default settings. Only click on this if you don't mind configuring the browser back to the way you had it, if you changed any settings at all that is.

If all of this does not work, uninstall IE restart the PC and reinstall it again.

Solve : Questions about download files with IE?

Answer»

when copy url to adress bar ,such as "******.AVI ",
i think ie will show the download window.
but ie didn't work like that.
so i install a software called free download manager.
i can't download too.
why??

and sometime right click and select "save target as ",it work
but when use free download manager ,user name an password are required
need some helpIt sounds to me like the content you are trying to download is protected! If so you will require a user name and password to download it.

To be on the safe side try using a different web browser. Firefox is my choice as i use it with Flashget Download manager, but in this case use Google Chrome as it has a better download system.are you SURE you're pasting a url on you browser? because on your SAMPLE the extension is .avi
make sure that its a correct url.You are copying an address to a SPECIFIC file...somewhere out there on the web.
If the file has been moved and or the site changed it'll never work.

Solve : disable content advisor -HELP!!?

Answer»

Hi I was wondering if anyone on here could help me try to disable my content advisor because there are a lot of sites I connot get on. Here is my dilemma, neither me nor my husband enabled the content advisor which means we do not know the password. Does anyone know how to disable it without the password. Please get back to me soon.
Thank You!!!!!Go to control panel/Internet options. Select content tab. Disable content advisor. In 2K or XP you might have to log in with the admin account.I cannot get my content advisor to disable. Everytime I disable it I can get on line, but I have to disable it everytime in order to get on to the internet. This is driving me crazy, can anyone help? You could PERHAPS set a password and then set it to allow you to view every website no matter if it is off or on.

I have not tried this, but perhaps it is possible.I had one program called Password Recovery Kit 4.3 that I have in my CD. It has a feature to unlock IE Contect Advisor password that I have tried to unlock my IE password succesfully. But, since i got it on the CD I bought a year ago, I don't know where you could get it from the internet. My sugestion is that you try to SEARCH it in the Internet and I hope you'll find it.remove the content advisor and ratings password using regedit in the run box to do this ok.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Ratings

open your registry find the key below single click on the key to HIGHLIGHT it, press the DELETE key or alternatively select delete from the edit menu close internet explorer, re-open it and the content advisor feature should be disabled has anybody found out what a load of rubbish winxp is stable system i dont think so...

We had the same problem...finally figured it out...go to internet options/ content advisor click on disable advisor our prompt came up as god after a thousand tries we tried hallealuah and it disabled then click on disable privacy filter.....good luckThe Topic is 5 YEARS old....and neither person is a Member anymore...Randomact is randomly posting. Then he has chosen his username wisely....weedhopper.

What do you mean here?when I reinstalles windows my whole desktop was lost.Everything is lost when you re-INSTALL Windows...

You need to re-create your Desktop and re-install all your programs.

It's a shame you weren't aware of this beforehand. But you still can't connect to the internet?

HMMM.... es2daniel:

As Patio said, when you reinstall Windows, you start over from scratch.

This also include any components on your computer that didn't come with it initially (like drivers for your network card). If the drivers aren't installed, you're not getting on the net.

So...

What version was on the computer before you tried installing IE 8? What SP (Service Pack) do you have installed in Windows XP?You basically can't uninstall IE.But, if you update IE from an older version to a later version, you can usually uninstall that later version, which takes you back to the earlier version.

Hello There!

A lot of touting has been going on in the Mailbox to download & install the IE8 Optimized for MSN....is this something different from the original download?

Can I get a performance boost over the 'Normal IE8 version' if I decide to UPGRADE for the same?

No difference...
IGNORE the emails.Thanks!

I hope that finally BRINGS an end to my isolation!

Yippie...! IE8 optimized for MSN just means IE8 has been set with MSN STUFF as default. But you can always change it anyway if you don't like it.

Solve : Serious problems with both IE and Firefox?

Answer»

I tried upgrading to IE8 on Thursday night and something went very wrong. Now I have no toolbar in Internet Explorer (no 'Tools' option, no 'Home' Icon, etc.), I cannot download ANYTHING (I don't EVEN get the option to run a file). Also, I cannot even open Firefox. When I click on the Firefox icon, nothing happens. I tried UNINSTALLING and can't even do that. I tried System Restore - it only lets me go back to the beginning of March, so I tried that but no luck. If you try this.

Start > run. Copy and paste the link below in to the box. This should force (I hope) the BROWSER to open the link. This is for IE7. See if it lets you download this and then run it. Hopefully it will force a rollback to IE7. If it does restart the PC, it should prompt you to do this anyway if it works.

Solve : Not Sure If My Browser Is The Problem?

Answer» Thank you x2543; actually Yoko Ono (Lennon's Widow) gave David high praise for his rendition of "Imagine".

I don't think I named anyone in particular as a ragger. the only person who has said anything positive about David is x2543. If you feel you need to defend yourself then you must be guilty.

You're right, you do know the least. My mistake...

American Idol... that explains everything, and IMO justifies my preemptive opinion.

David James Archuleta should never be defined by AI. Not my opinion, a fact. David has had a long musical career although it has been interupted by a horrible health issue. He fought his way back from that. David won the Jr. CHAMPIONSHIP of "Star Search", he performed for families and firefighters of the 9/11 disaster, he is a Mormon who has chosen to live a priestly life, he did two week of shows on AI with a strep infection and he performed every night of the Summer Tour even though he was sick and exhausted. he performed with one functioning vocal cord. He lost his voice again on the Solo Tour yet he performed 20 songs that first night. He has a 4.0 GPA and spent only 29 days at home last year. I could go on and on about this man but telling you anything about him still doesn't enlighten you. That's something you have to come to for yourself. But please don't dare put him down to me or any of his supporters. The level of respect between David and his fans/supporters is a cherished thing. And David deserves every bit of respect we show him. And I'm trying real hard not to put this thread in his sites and let all of those fans have their way with you.

And to think they even made a "Canadian Idol"... imagine a British Idol... lol.

This show originated in the United Kingdom just as "Big Brother" did.

Good Day people...either my eyes or you have given me a boomer of a headache. Prolly my poor vision.

To be brutally honest, this ENTIRE thread yells SPAM.

I mean, your CONSTANT insistence that WE go to the site to confirm that it's not a browser issue? That's like saying, Oh, my video card might be broken- can you check your sound card for me?

a lot of spammers post links to site hoping people will click it too. Your insistence that we click it only confirms any suspicion of that sort.

And to be honest, American Idol or whatnot is really just a fad. Anybody remember the first winner off the top of their head? I sure don't, so chances are they didn't become famous, which confirms it's just a network ploy like that ridiculously STUPID SURVIVOR show, which has so many spinoffs it strikes a chord on all tangents (pardon the pun).

They win the game. They release a few albums. Everybody forgets about them. They fade from the spotlight. The end. Or more precisely:

They win the game, they release a few albums, cover a single song alright, fans post link spam in various forums, argue when forum members try to diagnose issue without visiting the site, become extremely aggravated at the slightest JAB at the "messiah artist", suddenly say it was the forum members that were ragging on them for their personal tastes, and then hypocritically say that music is a personal taste while simultaneously condemning the forum member's unacceptance of said artist.

It doesn't matter how good somebody can cover another artists songs if they can't write their own; Although admittedly some of the greatest songs by the greatest bands are really just covers of other artists work- as an example "Call Me The breeze" is a million times better in the Skynyrd Performances then the JJ. Cale original.BC_P, I'm not a spammer. I posted an honest question in here because I wanted to know something that i am not computer learned enough to know. And My question if full was not being answer even though I said answer me fully and I won't re-post. DO you think I like repeating myself. Never have never will.

Now as it turns out I couldn't get into a site that I was told was running. SO I came in here because you guys have helped me before. I DON'T LOAD ANYTHING ON MY COMPUTER THAT i DON'T NEED. My printer isn't even hooked up. Now, while I was going back and forth with some of you I also sent another message to FOD asking if other members were having problems getting in. And as you know soon after I was able to bring them up. At that point I was done and I said so, except that If I decided to do something about the Browser at a later date I would come back to the thread. At that point this was posted.

And I said, "I know, I won't". And rather than let the thing alone someone else posted something about a mightmare which I took as a personal affront to David. It was totally unnecessary and yes, I always defend David from such comments. We all (fan clubs) do. Then this spiral began and you guys tried to blame me for one of your helpers' comment. Music is indeed a personal thing and I didn't send anyone in that site to do anything other than see if they had posted about a new browser being needed to access the site.

Now, I am done with this in public view. I am not added to any of your post counts anymore. If you wish to further discuss this, you know how to PM me. But be warned, DJA is one of my favorite subjects, If you don't know anything about him don't bother with a PM.

Solve : Can't remove Firefox?

Answer»

After a few weeks of using Mozilla Firefox, I got a message that I needed to reinstall the program because setup.exe file was corrupted. When I tried to reinstall it, I kept getting the same message, not allowing me to reinstall the program.

I tried deleting Mozilla Firefox. I went to "Add/Remove Programs" and clicked "remove" for Mozilla. Nothing happened. I kept clicking the button and nothing happened. I tried deleting all Firefox files, but it says I can't delete the folder because it isn't empty. But it also won't let me delete it because the file(s) in the folder are corrupted and unreadable.

This is keeping me from PROPERLY using certain programs, such as SKYPE. Please help!!Quote

This is keeping me from properly using certain programs, such as SKYPE. Please help!!
Can you elaborate?

Try reinstalling Firefox, then uninstalling it.SKYPE won't RUN properly because it says that it is trying to access Firefox but that file is corrupted.

I cannot uninstall or reinstall it. It keeps telling me the setup.exe file is corrupted when I try reinstalling it, and nothing happens when I click the "Remove" button to uninstall it.Go Start>Run, type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK.
Have Windows CD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it'll ask you for the CD.
If sfc won't find any errors, it'll simply quit, without any message.Re-install it and then un-install it....
This time use the Mozilla UNINSTALLER.What is the "Mozilla Uninstaller"? I've already mentioned that I can neither install, uninstall or reinstall Mozilla Firefox. I can't open it, remove it, delete it, or anything. It has to be something deeper than that, some way to access a more advanced MODE of removing programs.Go here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox
Since you can't use Add\Remove to uninstall Firefox, follow all steps from On Windows paragraph, starting at:
...continue on with the rest of the uninstall instructions.
Restart COMPUTER, and try to install Firefox again.

Solve : How do I DISABLE these (*&###&*)Internet Explorer 7 script error messages?

Answer»

I hope some one can offer to me some further suggestions as to how to disable these annoying I.E. 7 script error messages. I am new to this site and recently posted a much shorter version of this problem. Since I have not gotten any suggestions , I thought I would post again with more info. I am getting I.E.7 script error messages, and I want to get rid of them once and for all. I have been reading about these, they seem to be pretty common, and I have followed a lot of suggestions before coming to this site. So far nothing has worked. I have found out (according to others) that I.E.7 script error messages can be disabled. That is what I want to do.

On my computer I have the following: Windows XP Pro, Service Pack 3, Vipre (that is the correct SPELLING) antivirus and firewall (these are excellent)Spysweeper antispyware and Max Registry Cleaner that runs a daily registry scan ( their tech support hasn't solved this problem either so I will probably get rid of their cleaner). I use the current version of Mozilla Firefox as my main browser. I know I.E.7 is imbedded in Windows and it can complicate things if it is removed. Here is what I have done so far and NONE of it has worked: These suggestions are from various WEB sources.

I opened I.E.7 and went to Start>Run and TYPED in "iexplore.exe".
*Tools Menu>Internet Options>Advanced Tab.
*Click on Advanced Tab, scroll down to "Browsing".
*Check off box next to "Disable Script Debugging(IE)".
*Check off box next to "Disable Script Debugging (Other).
*Uncheck box next to"Display a notification about every script error)".
*Click "OK".
These steps did not solve the problem. I was really surprised!

Next: I tried to disable this service. This is what I really want to do.

*Click on Start>Run> and typed in "services.msc and press "OK"
*Click on "Extended tab" at bottom of page.
*Scroll down and find the service named "Machine Debug Manager".
I got this far in these directions and discovered my list of services DOES NOT have a "Machine Debug Manager. Could it be in my list with a different name or inside another service that is listed. I have checked and rechecked and "Machine Debug Manager" is not in my list I would really like to try and complete this solution, and I have the rest of the directions to do it. Right now not being able to locate "Machine DeBug Manager" has stopped me cold with this possible solution.

Next:
I clicked Start>Run and typed in "inetcpl.cpl" and pressed enter.
* Internet Properties>Security Tab and then click on "Reset all zones to default level". This did not work either. Another Surprise!

Next:
I found a program named DIAL- A -FIX, downloaded it and ran it. This program is advertised to repair all windows and I.E.7 errors. It also did not solve the problem. Not as surprised at this point!

Next: I tried two free registry cleaners that are supposed to be very good.
* I downloaded and ran two scans each with Eusing Registry Cleaner and Easy Cleaner Registry Cleaner. Neither one of those ELIMINATED the problem, so I removed them from my computer. Accepting my fate in computer (#**#) now!!

I am hoping there are more good solutions to try besides these. I am also wondering if I downloaded I.E.8 would it download over I.E. 7 and solve the probem, or would it load along side I.E.7 and just take up more space as I use Mozilla Firefox anyway. There has to be a way to disable I.E.7 script error messages. I do not want to do a clean reinstall of everything. Hoping to get a solution that finally fixes this problem. The rest of my computer is working fine and fast. This one issue really has me puzzled. Thank you,
beachguy.

It's showing a script error, because the website you're visiting has an error in its scripts. HOWEVER, you probably already knew that. So, try this:

Windows Knowledge Base

If that doesn't work, try this:

Quote from: windowsitpro.com

1. Start a registry editor (e.g., regedit.exe).
2. Navigate to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main registry subkey.
3. Double-click the Disable Script Debugger value.
4. Set the value data to "yes" to disable the script debugger, then click OK (setting the value to "no" enables the script debugger).
5. Restart IE for the change to take effect.

The registry editor is a powerful tool, and can damage your windows installation if you make mistakes. If you're not comfortable using it, try to have another individual with more experience perform any edits. Thanks for the info. I tried every suggestion in the Windows Knowledge Base ( none of those has Disabled I.E. script error messages) and I ran "regedit exe." The script debugger was already marked... yes.
My antivirus and firewall are not set at a high or even medium high security level. I need more suggestions as to how to disable I.E.script error messages. Thankyou, beachguy.
Here is a web site that may help you.....then again it may not since a lot of the info comes from the MSKB.

http://kadaitcha.cx/xp/internet_explorer.htmlThanks again,

You were correct, most of what is listed at that site I have already tried and it did not stop these annoying script errors. But..... it did provide one more piece of information. Microsoft admits in that link that this is a problem with their file "KB886617" They state it causes I.E.7 script error messages. Of course they don't say how to repair, disable or delete this!!! It is not one of my stand alone updates listed in Add/Remove programs in the control panel, so I am assuming they buried this somewhere inside Service Pack 3. Can this file be disabled, repaired, deleted or reinstalled? Going to Microsoft updates and typing in KB886617 into their Search window only tells what it is but not how to disable it. Thaks again, Beachguy. Is it listed as one of your $NTUninstall$ files ? ?I did a little research and found this :

"If you still get the script or runtime error messages after disabling them in Internet Explorer, the problem might be that you have some unwanted spyware or adware installed on your computer."

Perhaps instead of banging your head, follow the guidelines and post the 3 required logs and have a specialist scrutinize your system....Your AV could possibly be missing an infection .... I'd take that registry cleaner right off the PC, none are worth the problems they can incur, all use scare tactics and marketing hype ........By any chance did your problems start after you installed the cleaner?
I would avoid IE8......it would download over IE7 but you may compound problems ....... Installing IE8 has not solved a longtime problem I am dealing with......
Solve your issues with IE7 then look to IE8, but if you get IE7 working to your satisfaction, stick with it.Thanks again for the newest suggestions. These messages happened before I tried the different registry cleaners and I have run a test to see if I got these script error messages with my anti virus and firewall temporarily turned off to see if I would still get these messages and I did. I don't think it is either of these two programs causing this. Where do I locate $NTUinstall$. I typed it into "Run" on the Control Panel but it did not come up. Thanks again , beachguy.

Solve : Failed to connect?

Answer»

Periodically, while browsing, all of a sudden I can't connect to any sites. Both IE and Firefox won't connect.
Yet, my computer says I am still connected to the internet.
I use firefox most of the time to browse. When I GET the failed to connect message. I switch to IE and I get the same failed to connect message. I close both browsers and try to reopen, still the same error. Try to disconnect my internet connection and reconnect and open browser, same error.
The only thing I can do to fix it is restart my computer which is really annoying when you are in the middle of something.
I have GOOGLE searched for answers on this and on various computer help sites/forums and can't seem to find any solutions.
Any ideas?
Unplug your Modem...wait 1 MINUTE and plug it back in...wait 2 minutes before trying.
If there is a router involved do the same as above...
Re-boot the PC....I am connecting wirelessly on my laptop. The modem is attached to my desktop computer. Still try unplugging the modem and reconnecting?Yep.
If it's wireless do the same for the router...unless it's a wireless modem/router combo.
Re-boot the MAIN PC.Just a bit of personal experience here....I had the exact same issue several months ago......While downloading the Beta version of IE8 from the MS website no less, I was attacked by a driveby browser hijacker which crippled my PC and would only allow me to stay connected to the internet for 5 minutes at a time and then I had to reboot to connect again.....It planted malicious script which fried my DNS settings....It went right through Norton........POS

My advice is to have the specialists go over your logs and focus on an infection as well as hardware issues......

I had to eventually REINSTALL XP, but I was upgrading a HD so I was prepared for it.Hello Patio:
This occurs even if I do not have my desktop turned on. Just the router/modem is on. The next time this happens on the laptop I will try your suggestion to turn the modem off and back on. Will post the results. Thanks. Hello Karnac:

I hope that it isn't as serious as this.
I do not use IE unless there is a website that will not load properly with Firefox which is very rare.
I therefore do not download updates for IE either.
I have a secure wireless network, firewalled, virus & spyware scans regularly. So I hope that I am not vulnerable to what you have experienced.
Thanks for the advice and I will keep this in mind if I continue to have problems or it escalates.

Solve : Windows internet explorer not responding?

Answer»

Updated AVG 8 Free on my laptop Was on the internet when Secure Veteran appeared stating that I had Spyware and needed to remove it. The computer immediately shut down Internet Explorer 7. Each time I tried to reenter or repair, Windows Internet Explorer would not response. This is a laptop on a wireless connection. I have tested my other laptop and it responds to the browser. My desktop is also on a wireless connection. All other COMPUTERS respond. Operating system XP. Help!!You're INFECTED...

Quote

SecureVeteran is classified as a misleading anti-virus application because it uses false scan results and fake security alerts to convince you that your computer is infected with malware. Please note that the only real infection is Secure Veteran itself. The rogue program is installed through the use of Trojans, fake online anti-spyware scanners and various misleading WEBSITES that SUPPOSEDLY provide free online videos
of well known TV shows. Most of the time, the user is prompted to install video codec to watch requested video. Then an executable file pop ups, for example vstream_udate.104.exe or similar. Usually such file contains a Trojan virus or it is a setup file of a certain rogue security program.

What are you talking about? I am using FireFox3 and there is no VISIBLE ask.com on the toolbar. Just Google.Problem solved- all by myself.
Not bad for a computer dummy

If you google "mozilla ask.com", youll see that theres a general issue with the ask.com toolbar.

So i tried under EXTRAS (tools in english?), but i havent deinstalled ask.com (dont know how, not YET a whizkid am i?); i just changed the start page to google fire fox.You may now be infected from having that toolbar running...
VISIT our Virus and Spyware section to make sure...at least, post an hijack this LOG and a malwarebyte log for evilfantasy to examine -- that's a start.

Solve : IE and Firefox take 15 minutes to launch?

Answer»

Here's a strange thing. After booting, web browsers take a very long time to launch. I usually use Firefox 3.5.3, but the same thing happens with IE.

After a while, the browser opens, and everything seems to work fine. No performance issues at all, until the next startup.

It's not the Internet connection itself, because while I wait, I can open Thunderbird and retrieve e-mails.

This is on Windows XP.

Any thoughts? Does it happen for any other applications? Have you tried scanning for viruses or malware/spyware?Anything new since the last time they opened normally (new hw, sw, virus)? It does not happen with any other applications -- only web browers.

No new programs or hardware have been added recently.

Haven't tried scanning for spyware yet. Will do that tonight, but is there anything else I should be on the lookout for? Let's start with that. Do a full system scan with your AV and then do another with MalwareyBytes and/or Super AntiSpywareClose Firefox. Go Start>All Programs>Mozilla Firefox, click on Mozilla Firefox (safe mode). Same thing?

Close IE.
Go Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, and click on Internet Explorer (no add-ons). Same thing? To follow up: I've scanned with Norton AntiVirus and with Malware Bytes. No problems were detected.

After rebooting, I tried launching Firefox (safe mode). It took a long time to open, just as the regular Firefox did.

Again, this only happens when first booting up. Afterward, browsers work fine, and I'm not noticing any problems with speed or anything else. While waiting for the browser to launch, I checked Task Manager, but didn't see anything UNUSUAL going on. I hear the disc running, but the system RESOURCES are in the single-digits, nowhere near 100% usage.

So, I'm still puzzled. Anything else that I should check? Yeah, one other thing I'd like you to try. Please boot to safe mode (with or without networking) and open a browser. Does it still take a long time?In addition to what Allan said, try to create new profile: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_ManagerHi!
firefox is too SLOW to launch now in my desktop but in my laptop its as fast as IE. why is that so? Does my files have SOMETHING to do with this??

Solve : Google Chrome Sound?

Answer»

I love Google Chrome, but I've had this PROBLEM off and on, sometimes Google Chrome just won't play SOUND for me. It is pretty annoying because when this happens, I have to switch to another browser to watch a video. I've seen other people online complaining about it too. I think it might be something to do with the Windows Vista VOLUME controls, which is cool because you can control the volume of everything, but lots of TIMES I never wee Chrome on that volume mixer, and so i wonder if its because sometimes I use it to turn down the volume of Chrome, but It is never on the volume mixer to turn the volume back up.Quote

You seem to have contradicted yourself. First, you say you never see Chrome on the volume mixer, then you say you do say it sometimes.

Do you use Chrome exclusively for web browsing?

I just installed Chrome yesterday and I see it on my volume mixer. You might just uninstall Chrome and then REINSTALL it to see whether that makes a difference.

Solve : Get rid of IE8 forever??

Answer» Is it posible to Get rid of IE8 forever?
I did remove it and went back to IE6, the original of this install. I am running XP sp3 and when I un install IR8 I can go back and bring up IE6. So far, so good. So in hte morning I get a message fro automatic updates that I did to do an update. OK, this machine is very legit and stable. So I do it, and POW! It gives me IE8 again! AHHH. I can not use IE8 I am not willing to alter my BRAIN to learn yeat another browser behavior. I want IE8 forever!

So how can I get relevant updates and not get IE8.
Please have pity on me. I can not tolerate IE8.
I can get a not from my doctor the it ...
drives me crazy! Pleae help!

Yes, I do have firefox. But I need IE6 for a few tasks.
Don't need all the histrionics. Go into Windows Update and hide the update.Right clik on the IE8 update next time the window comes up and select remove from list...it'll stop buggin you...
BTW you should have Updates set to notify but ask before INSTALLING...the safest bet to keep Win from doing what it wants to do.
I have it set this way and i usually check Forums for update issues for about 2 weeks before i DLoad and install them.
Take CONTROL of your machine...

A perfect example of this was last Fall when an automatic update from MS shut down internet connectivity on untold numbers of machines...
They don't always get it right.Thank you Patio. Works good. No problem....

LOL. Why are we comparing Browser speeds with page loading speeds ? ?
The 2 depend on different elements altogether....
Or am i missing something as usual ? ?Hmmm....loading a web page is downloading that page to your browser, or....am I missing something? How FAST the browser starts up and how fast a page loads once the browser is running are 2 different things...
Going on what he said here.Agreed here...Quote from: Broni on May 08, 2009, 03:29:56 PM

Did the attachment work? The page won't load using FF, It will load using IE. You see the gray VERTICAL dividing line, it keeps switching on and off, like FF is trying to reload? That page should be full of info. thanks

[attachment deleted by admin]Quote from: soybean on May 08, 2009, 07:04:29 PM
I decided to install Chrome on my laptop and run some speed tests. I ran multiple tests with both browsers. Overall, test results fluctuated more than usual; I do not attribute that to my computer or the web browsers; it's due to factors external to my personal computing environment.

The variation in test scores applied to both Firefox and Chrome, with lower and higher scores obtained from both browsers. The results definitely did not show one browser or the other to consistently yeild better results than the other, just as I expected.

Again ... AGAIN ... raw speed tests for your Internet service are not determined by the general performance of your computer or the particular web browser you're using. These tests are not processor-intensive TASKS. This point was previously covered.

Up until about 5 months ago, I had an old Pentium with Win 98SE and IE 6 sitting in the same room as my main desktop computer. Using it to view web pages heavily laden with Flash, JavaScript, etc. was a test in patience; it was slow in rendering the page and once rendered, scrolled jerkily. But, I could run a speed test with it and get the same results as with my main desktop system (Win XP) or my laptop (Vista).

Re-read Posts #2 and #13...

Thanks for the post, I guess I missed your point? My point was as far as internet speed, the chrome browser is faster than the others. It doesn't matter the testing web-site or time of day. Yes,the numbers will change, but, chrome always has the highest kbps, with my isp and system. I can't say what the numbers will show with another isp or computer. thanksQuote from: jdl on May 09, 2009, 09:01:32 AM

The second page was using IE

[attachment deleted by admin]Apparently, your purpose for starting this thread was to declare that Chrome is a faster browser because you ran speed tests and got faster results when using Chrome. I'm not going to repeat everything I've said about Internet speed tests. But, if you're STILL trying to convince people that Chrome is a faster browser because it always speed tests run from Chrome will always be faster, people who follow this line of thinking are going to be deceived.

I just ran three tests. Here are the download/upload speeds:
1st: Firefox: 1.07Mbps/0.37Mbps
2nd: Chrome: 1.19Mbps/0.37Mbps
3rd: Firefox again: 1.44Mbps/0.37Mbps

Am I going to declare, based on the third test, that Firefox is a faster browser? No. I could sit here and run tests all day and it's not going to substantiate one browser to produce faster speeds from speed tests. As others have said, your perception of speed in web page rendering with different browsers is a separate matter from tests of your Internet connection speed.

Regarding the library database you say you can't access with Firefox, I don't know what your problem is there. I just visited http://www.oplin.org/databases/ with Firefox and find that I can access info. I don't know exactly what your search procedure and criteria were, so I can't duplicate your exact search.

Note: a valid library card is some library in Ohio that is linked to oplin.org system is needed to access the records in this system.Hi, thanks for the post. Maybe using the term, (computer speed) was the inaccurate. I guess I should have said, (internet download speed).

I know there are many reasons to use a computer, I'm a web browser. I can't see how you can separate computer performance from the browser and in turn the internet download speed?

I've posted more than one speed test IE and FF are consistent with each other, one or two digit difference. Chrome is different story. I believe chrome is still in Beta, still got bugs to work out. I don't use chrome as a daily browser, I use ff and IE. The numbers I listed was for my internet download speed test on my computer. Maybe those numbers are different for everybody??

I'm not trying to convince you GOOD people of anything. I just thought it was an interesting subject. Your certainly welcome to use whatever browser you want. I couldn't care less. I respect all opinions.

The page I listed, that FF wouldn't load, is an automotive database, any large library that serves your area, has this same database. You can access this database from your home computer for free.

Everybody have a good day.

Just use firefox. Its a much better browser

Firefox is good, or you can get google chrome if you like that. Both are working fine.Since installing IE8 I have had nothing but issues with urlmon.dll errors which lock various web sites and MAKE them unavailable.......same issues have been seen in IE7 for years.......MS has a LIST of fixes, none of which have solved the problem.....judging from the number of complaints in the MS forums, thousands of people have the same problems.....My suggestion is that if you have IE7 and it works well for you, then forget about IE8.....it's just not worth the aggravation.but if you have ie8 and it is working fine with your system, like it is on my system, it WOULD be great to have it

Else if you're having difficulties, then get an alternative browser.

Examples are: In Local disk (C:)Standard floppy disk controller, and standard floppy disk controller #1, VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller, with #1, & #2, Similar things like that in the Program Files area as well.

I have no idea how they got there.

If those are files leave them for now...right CLICK them and select Properties.
If those are actual devices and they are showing up where you say they are the machine needs attention.
Devices should not be LISTED in Programs.

Solve : Please Help! IE8 issues?

Answer»

Hi, i sure hope someone will be able to help with my problem. well here goes.....Here at WORK there are 2 computers that are connected to INTERNET via the same dsl modem. (wired) on one comp. IE8 was mistakenly installed. the other comp has our point of sale software installed on it and through this software, we receive electronic dispatches of jobs from insurance companies via various NETWORKS. we invoice the job and transmit electronically thru the software for payment. since the install of IE8 on the other comp. we are unable to do either. also on both computers some websites are fine but others wont connect at all. for instance, if i go to comcast.net, the page is fine. if i sign in to access email, all i can do is enter name and password, but once i hit enter....nothing. eventually it will say internet explorer cannot display webpage. i uninstalled the IE8 from the computer and reinstalled IE7, but still have my problem. can anyone help? our pos tech support cannot help...not an issue with their software "connected to internet via the same dsl modem. (wired)" - how? Internet Connection Sharing? Or does the modem have a USB and ethernet connection so that two computers can connect at once? Any firewalls running? Your problems SOUND like an MTU issue at first read. Try a System Restore on the machine which had IE8 installed. I mean, to a point before IE8 was installed, and before you had the issues. Firefox. The browser itself is unlikely to be the issue if some sites can be reached and others can't. Application layer (#7) of the OSI model is working - MTU is at Datalink layer (#2), which will affect everything that uses a network connection, and MTU issues commonly result in haphazard connectivity and no access to secure sites.

I could of course be proved wrong, computers are never so straightforward, and a third-party firewall can throw all the logical troubleshooting steps out altogether.YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

Uninstall IE8
TO uninstall from XP:

click START
Control Panel
Add Remove Programs
Internet Explorer 8
REMOVE

Then run windows update to hide the ie8 update, it's classified a "critical update".
click the + and check "Do not show again", this keeps it from re-installing.

At this point it you will be back to IE7.

Solve : ie8 officially out tomorrow?

Answer»

It's classified as a "critical update" and automatically installs if AUTOMATIC update is on, WHY???
It has caused too many users a LOT of grief.

If you have problems uninstall ie8 to get back to IE7 and run windows update manually
for XP uncheck and click the + and then check "do not show again"

for VISTA view available updates, uncheck, right click and hide the update. Quote from: dddavis1954 on May 11, 2009, 01:55:33 PM

Thats why.they want to force people to use itQuote from: computeruler on May 11, 2009, 02:44:41 PM
they want to force people to use it

You don't have to use it, and probably that would make the computer more secure, in that you're getting the latest IE updates from MS and thus thwarting possible hacks and cracks VIA the IE. But win 7 allows you to DISABLE IE so that it doesn't work on your pc until you re-enable it.

I had to attach it because it said,

[attachment deleted by admin]While I'm checking those LOGS...

Download Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.
Attach the file to your next reply.here...

[attachment deleted by admin]You gave me OTL.txt log twice.
The second one is named Extras.txt, but contain very same info as OTL.txt
Extras.txt should start with something similar to:

Process Explorer log looks fine.

I believe, your main issue is this:

Quote
447.48 Mb Total Physical Memory | 72.40 Mb Available Physical Memory | 16.18% Memory free

Your computer may have not enough RAM to render Flash files.

There are some other issues (?)...
I can see, you have Eusing Free Registry Cleaner installed. Using registry cleaners is absolutely not recommended. They won't give you any gains, but they can easily bring serious issues (maybe, they did already).
Uninstall AskBarDis.
I don't know, what SpeedBit Video Accelerator does, but it may be bringing more weight to you overloaded computer.
I'd also uninstall ZoneAlarm, which is rather heavy program for your amount of RAM. Besides, I'm not a big fan of ZA, which is likely to cause some problems. I'd stay with Windows firewall.
If you want to uninstall ZA completely, use this: http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/support/cpes_clean.exe

Don't forget about sfc.I don't think I can do the sfc thing because I don't have the XP disc.
I ran the OTL scan several times exactly as you instructed, but only got the OTL.txt.Quote
I ran the OTL scan several times exactly as you instructed, but only got the OTL.txt.
That's fine.

Run sfc anyway. This way, we'll find out, if it'll stop at some point, and ask you for CD. If so, we'll know, you have some system files missing/corrupted.Good MORNING all.

Make sure your web accelerator is turned off, check your speed at the link below.
http://www.speedtest.net/
Let us know the results?
Can you give us an address you're having a problem with?Download speed 6.13
Upload speed 0.75

The website that I'm having problems with?
Well, if that's what you were talking about, there are more than one, but mostly certain videos on youtube.comI'd like to have your speed.
All I can think of is to suggest you disable and/or remove any software that claims to speed up your internet.
I've found this 'speed' comes at a price and the price is either downgraded or non-existant pictures.
Perhaps you could temporarily disable anything suspect in msconfig.
Start>Run>msconfig and check out the startup tab on the right hand side.
You will have to reboot for the changes to take effect, ignore the little warning screen after reboot.I'm actually paying for faster speed than I'm getting.
I was told that if your computer doesn't have a lot of memory that the Internet can't go as fast.
I removed the speed thing.
I only downloaded it because I thought it would fix the problem.
I have gone into msconfig and disabled things there.
My computer just turned four years old a few days ago, so do you think age may be a factor?Your computer is fine and your memory won't effect your internet speeds.
I could easily be off on a wild goose chase here but it won't hurt to try a couple of more things.

1) Ping utube and paste the results in here.

Solve : disappearing IE toolbar?

Answer»

When I log onto IE the toolbar appears but immediately scrolls upward and off the screen. It can be brought BACK by moving the cursor to the top of the screen. There is no problem being connected to the Internet, but this disappearing toolbar is a hassle. Also, the toolbar sometimes shows a string of green tabs for VARIOUS Favorite websites (the first items in my Favorites listing) which it never did before this problem developed. In other respects IE seems to be OK.

I use Windows Vista with IE 8.0. This problem was created by the good PEOPLE at Earthlink tech support who were trying to help me speed up a slow connection. They got the speed problem solved but they had me delete MANY files in the process. Apparently, these deletions damaged IE in some way. If this problem cannot be corrected easily, what should I do? I do not have a program or backup disk for IE. Would I have to purchase it, and if so, could I install it over the existing program? TRY F11, see if your toolbar stays on top.F11 worked! Problem solved: many thanks!

Solve : Opera - Problem with Facebook?

Answer»

I love my Opera, but I have one trouble with it.

When on Facebook, I can't do anything which involves SENDING messages or status updates. I can type in the box, but when pressing SHARE, it doesn't do anything. This is the same on both status updating and commenting other people. It drives me mad, because I have to open IE everytime I want to do it.

Anyone got any ideas of why?I think that opera's still the worst browser out of the big FOUR (IE, Firefox, SAFARI and Opera) in terms of compatibilities with webpages. I think it's just that opera's being too strict about following the HTML code to the dot.

I'm guessing that's probably what's going on but I don't know what the code's like under the hood of facebook.

Solve : Some websites don't seem to load right or at all?

Quote from: AmyR7 on May 08, 2009, 11:27:31 PM

How would we reset Internet Explorer? Are there some instructions on how to do that?
If we reset it, do we have to do anything else like setup our ISP stuff again somehow?

HTTP://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 --> read this help page from microsoft's WEBSITE on how to reset internet explorer, resetting internet explorer is supposed to fix internet explorer in tthe event that it becomes unusable. I don't even know how to do the ping command either.
I notice you said you only use the numeric address for troubleshooting. I don't even know how to do any troubleshooting since I'm not a computer technician.
I read the last post where you said you explained how to find the ip address, and I don't understand what you said to do there. I tried to figure out what you mean about using Firefox addon thing. But how do I get to that section of the browser? Is it under file, edit, view, history, bookmarks, tools, help?
Do you have Firefox installed, to start with?Yes on my MOM's computer.
On mine we just got rid of it due to hacking causing it to be all messed up. A friend of mine is helping me with wiping out the hard drive and will have to help me get everything set back up- the internet all that stuff. Which we had a TERRIBLE time getting things to work when switching to from dialup to DSL, and still do keep having problems, especially on my computer- the disc that my nephew put in to set it up had all this spyware and stuff on it. Plus also had a problem with the router thing keep popping up asking for username and password even THOUGH we were already online.

One thing I keep trying to understand, do both me and my mom have an ip address?
The router and modem are both hooked up to my computer and goes out to my mom's. Then, install ShowIP: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/590 add-on. It'll show an IP address of every page, you're on.

[attachment deleted by admin]It's not working right, and I'm scared to do anything else since this is my mom's computer. She is scared about hacking since we keep having so many problems and this is what happens- It keeps saying something about Malicious software can damage your computer or violate your privacy. It also says Author not verified.
Is there a way to find out it we maybe already have a way to do this without installing anything at all?
We keep having so many problems trying to install things. I even keep trying to install some software on my computer so I don't have to keep putting in the cd everytime I want to use this one thing to create greeting cards, and can't seem to get it to install the stuff. I went to the setup on the cd but it doesn't seem to be installing it because everytime I take the disc out, it still needs the disc. So, I don't know why things don't work, even though I thought I followed instructions correctly on installing software. I'm wondering if the reason this isn't working is maybe I already have this addon already because I do notice something at the bottom of the screen that says transferring data from 66.48.69.99...

I also noticed you said that you mainly only use the ip address numbers for troubleshooting. But what type of troubleshooting do you use it for is what I don't understand. Like what will it help you to determine the problem for?
This is the first time I ever heard of using the numbers to get to websites. I thought you just type in the url like www.kookeys.com stuff like that. It doesn't tell you to type in any numbers when it tells the website address. Another question I have is that alot of times I have problems with the screen being cut off to where I can't view the whole page, and there is no way to scroll down because of no scroll bars on the sides or anything.
Probably has to do with some type of settings somewhere, but I don't know where or what to look for. uninstall ie8

see my other posts todayQuote from: dddavis1954 on May 11, 2009, 01:41:08 PM
uninstall ie8

see my other posts today

It all depends on how user likes it. Maybe IE8 doesn't have problem which is good, but ....I don't even have IE8.
We have Mozilla, and IE 7 which we don't use anymore on my mom's computer due to hacking messing it up and haven't found any repairman who fix it yet.
My computer had Mozilla but doesn't anymore due to hacking messing it up on, but has never worked right since beginning on both browsers on both computers. Maybe you want to do a complete format and clean reinstall of windows, that's what I'd do at this point but I'm sure you're probably not going to do want to do that.,

Screen being cut off, first of all check your screen resolution, then play with the screen adjustments, usually through those buttons on your computer's monitor if they're there.Over the years we have had several repairmen work on our computers and still having not much luck with things.
I keep trying to figure out what my screen resolution needs to be. I keep trying all different things. I also keep trying to figure out what do I need to have just for all the settings in all my programs- browsers- like font colors stuff like that. Is there somewhere that you can look to check as to what needs to have check marks by them under each tab, and also the numbers you need for like font size, and the name of fonts- Arial, stuff like that?
Some other things I keep having problems with too and would like to know is how exactly to install things? Whenever I try to install things, it doesn't seem to be working right because everytime I want to use the program, it keeps wanting me to put in the disc. There is this one thing I use called Microsoft Works to make greeting cards and other things with, and I have to put the disc in each time I want to use it.
I'm also in the process of trying to back things up(which I'm running into some problems with trying to do it) because of a friend of mine I found who is helping with wiping out the hard drive due to spyware, viruses all that stuff. We have AVG on both mine and mom's computer. The other thing too is that we can't unhook my computer from the modem and router all the way because if we do then my mom's computer can't connect to the internet at all. Another thing that keeps happening too is that ever since switching from dialup internet to DSL, my computer CPU usage keeps going up to 100% most times and freezing it up.
Although I haven't had problems with AVG, I'm hearing more people having computer problems with it so I switched out to AVAST!

So go install AVAST instead, the free version is fine! You just need to register on their website for a free key every 12 or so months so that the the AVAST program knows you're a home user.Personally...I think you have an malware issue.

Solve : Firefox lags at...?

Answer»

I've noticed that my firefox lags on pages that have a lot of "clickable" options.
Like pages where there's lots of bubbles to click..
It TAKES a while to load on these pages and sometimes it freezes until it loads all the way.
It didn't happen before, but now it does. :c

Also, sometimes my Firefox gets these "cannot FIND page" things when I go through my bookmarks.
It doesn't really seem like it's a connection problem as my messengers seem to be working fine when it occurs.

Also, I'm using Windows XP.Close Firefox. Go Start>All PROGRAMS>MOZILLA Firefox, click on Mozilla Firefox (safe MODE). Same thing?

I am currently running a rather old desktop - Dell Dimensions 9100 with Windows XP, service pack 2. I am having problems running some websites, I am thinking it's due to a software missing from my PC that the website requires but when I go to the websites I have problems with, nothing comes up at all apart "Internet Explorer cannot display this webpage..." I'll get a screenshot if need be, but you guys should know the screen. I've tried Google Chrome & Internet Explorer 7 but both browser display there screens what say the page cannot be opened.
