Solve : Need help with this issue please....?

Answer»

My daughter came to visit and went on my computer using Internet Explorer not realizing that I use Firefox only. EVER since then, when I go to the computer or while I am on the computer, the Internet Explorer main page(Google is the default) comes up. I click on the Firefox ICON, and could be just looking at the ESPN site as an example, and every 3-5 minutes, that screen pops up. I then have to "X" it out, and then I get the Internet Explorer error message, which says IE has to shut down, sorry for the inconvenience, and do I want the report, ETC. This is incredibly annoying. I just purchased a "Registry Cleaner" and I EVEN tried to delete the IE folder through "KillBot" but it wouldn't allow it? Need help please! Thanks!Quote

You just paid for messing your computer up even more. Uninstall, work couple more hours more this week to cover losses

Another bad move.
Can't you just ask around before doing something what's gonna kill your computer sooner, or later?

Now, please explain when IE pops up, because I simply don't understand it from your description.Well after running the Registry Cleaner the pop up problem has gone away. I also did a defrag and my computer is much faster as well. Seems LIKE all is well now. Thanks!

Solve : How do I create a shortcut with Mozilla Firefox??

Answer»

Egads !

He is wanting shortcuts to webpages.....NOT FireFox.I KNOW it's been a long time since anyone posted a REPLY to this topic but I had the same question and EVENTUALLY found what seems like a really good solution.

First make a copy of the main firefox icon/shortcut. (I am using XP so I drag the shortcut to the desktop from where ever it is, while HOLDING down the ctrl-key. )

Then right-click on it and choose "properties", and then choose the "Shortcut" tab.

In the target box you will see something like: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe". At the end of the box, outside of the quotes, paste the url. On the general tab rename the shortcut for convenience.

This gives you a shortcut that will open firefox even if IE is your default browser, a feature I needed to test out WEBSITES.

Solve : error message in firefox. NO clue what to do.?

Answer»

Alright so whenever I open firefox the window says:
"accept-encoding: text/html, text/plain
connection: close"

What do I do to fix this?
Reinstall Firefox.or for a full uninstall:

Quote from: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox

Exit Firefox completely, open the Windows Control PANEL and then,

* On Windows Vista, go to "Programs -> Programs and Features", select Mozilla Firefox <version> and click click Uninstall. [3]
* On Windows XP (or earlier), double-click "Add or Remove Programs" Select "Mozilla Firefox <version>" in the list of installed programs and click "Remove" to run the uninstaller.

STARTING in Firefox 3, the uninstaller includes the option, "Remove my Firefox personal data and customizations". This will also remove your Firefox user profile data (bookmarks, passwords, cookies, extensions, preferences, etc.). DO NOT select this option if you want to keep your Firefox profile data and settings.

Even if the uninstall fails, as it may in some cases, continue on with the rest of the uninstall instructions.

* Delete the Firefox INSTALLATION directory located here, by default: C:\Program files\Mozilla Firefox (Optionally make a backup copy of the "plugins" subfolder first, so that you can restore it later if you PLAN on reinstalling Firefox.)
* (Optional) Enable viewing or searching hidden files and folders (details here) then delete these additional files or folders (recommended if you are preparing for a clean reinstall):
o The Firefox folder that contains temporary data ( *.mfl files, Cache and Updates), located here: Important: Make sure you delete the Firefox folder under Local Settings or Local. Deleting the wrong folder will remove your user profile data!
+ Windows 2000/XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox
+ Windows Vista: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox
o Windows Vista: The C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox folder [4] (if it exists)
o Windows XP/Vista: Delete all C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\FIREFOX* files
o If you installed the Quality Feedback Agent component (aka Talkback), open the %APPDATA%\Talkback\MozillaOrg\ folder and delete all "Firefox<somenumber>" folders found, for example, "Firefox10" "Firefox15" and "Firefox2".

* If necessary, remove the "Mozilla Firefox" shortcuts in the Windows START -> Programs menu by right-clicking and deleting the entries. This step should not be needed unless the Firefox uninstall from the Windows Control Panel failed.

The Firefox uninstall will leave behind some Windows registry entries, which can be cleaned up using Windows regedit or a 3rd party registry cleaner. Normally, these extra entries are harmless, and it is not necessary to remove them. Note: registry editing is a potentially hazardous undertaking!.

You may also need to manually change some Windows file associations or icons, even after setting a new default browser, as reported here.
Very nice
That's the best way to go...

Solve : Outlook express is making me nuts?

Answer»

OE is e-mailing all of my PREVIOUS e-mails every time I send a new one. I've used the "Delete All" in IE tools including "Off Line" and "stored in add ons". I've also run CCleaner.

Searching the web I've found some hints but my OExpress doesn't have "Options" under "Tools". The only way I can open OE is when I'm on craigslist and try to e-mail someone.

What the H is going on? I have XP Pro, IE 7.0.5730.13, OE 6.00.2900.5512 I do regular custom Microsoft updates and usually just the High Priority ones.

Any ideas? What virus protection are you using? What firewall are you using? Are you using any SPYWARE removal tools? You can use another email program without losing any of you prior work.
Many prefer to use on-line e-ail, sometimes called web mail. That's what I now do. After months of using five different email programs, I now just use gmail.
If you install microsoft office it screwed with your OE settings, Try this:
Change the default email program to "microsoft outlook" and reboot
then hange it back to OE and reboot.

What you're saying is that installing MS Office would change the default email program from OE to Outlook. I think that depends on how the user doing the installation of Office responds to certain options during installation. But, yes, if Office was installed and the default email client got changed, it could be changed back using your procedure. However, we no indication so far that Office was installed.

No, webmail simply means accessing an email account via web browser instead of an email client (OE, Outlook, etc.). For, the YAHOO Mail service is webmail. Hotmail and Google's Gmail are also commonly accessed via web browser and, THEREFORE, are webmail. Obviously, the OS has nothing to do with this. Quote from: soybean on May 07, 2009, 10:17:01 AM

Kaspersky IS 8.0, Kaspersky's firewall, no removal tools. Thanks for the reply, sorry to take so long to get back to you and I still have the problem...working my way down the list of replies...still need advice.

I don't load any e-mails on to my laptop. I just view it all online. I have Hotmail (Personal) and Smartermail (Business)...I don't think Smartermail loads.

The only time I use OE is when replying on craigslist or contacting someone via their website and they automatically go to OE. Otherwise, strictly Hotmail and Smartermail.

Office 2003 is installed but I have yet to configure Outlook. Are the settings to be changed in IE or Outlook. Also, why does my OE not have options and folders that appear to be on other's OE? I could solve this on my own if I could get to these folders and follow steps I've seen posted elsewhere.

Again, the only way I can open OE is by responding to Craigslist posting or "Contact page" on someone's website. How else can I open it?

Thanks Quote

Is OE on your Programs menu? If you open Add or Remove Programs from you Control Panel and select Add/Remove WINDOWS Components, is OE shown as being installed?Nope, OE is not on the Start menu's list of programs and it's not in Add/Remove programs. Its all very wierd. I didn't have any luck with Search either although I may not be using the correct word/phrase. Quote from: sg on May 14, 2009, 04:32:01 PM

Solve : Can't get IE 7 or 8 to run?

Answer»

My computer "FIX it" lady kept my computer for a day and when she
returned it, she said she'd installed IE 7 I think it was.

However today, I went to a site I'm going to be using heaviily every
day and they REQUIRE IE 7 or 8 and their SYSTEM says I have IE 6.

I went to add/remove and none are listed there. I don't know where they
are kept!

I've heard that it's very hard to get rid of IE 6.

Bottom line is I'll follow your instructions to the letter if you can tell me
what to do I'll go and download a new one if you tell me to. Just put it
step by step because I'm a computer dummy.

Solve : windows internet explorer repeatingly popping up?

Answer»

Hello,

I just received my gateway laptop back from having the main board replaced. So, they say any ways. Turned it on last night and the first thing I did was made sure my mcafee protection was up dated. Cool. All set. Clicked on IE went right to AOL.com clicked to sign in and a different screen came up saying there were not correct certificate to log in safely. That is not word for word. Something like that. Then I clicked google and tried to log in there. Again the same notice came up. Any site I tried to go into gave me that notice. Never in two years have I had any issues or concerns about these sites. The warning still gave me an option to open the site or mail. So, I did and got my aol mail. As I'm reviewing mail. IE just KEEP opening these small aol screens. Meaning it would keep relaunching it SELF to the internet.

So, I tried to deal with it last night. I felt like I was chasing IE all over my screen. When I went into task MANAGER IE was running at like 585,000 compared to everything else running at 2000,4000 20,000 It was off the charts. I wanted to end task so bad I could taste it. Did not do that. I was able to close the group and shut down. I want to work on it tonight.

Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Kthere is a microsoft error page on this:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/help/064af181-10b3-49e7-9eb6-ba3f07d888031033.mspx

and does this error appear in any other browsers? firefox, safari, chrome? My gateway is not running any other browsers then IE. As of last night anyways. I had the system kept very basic. I dont like adding anymore down loads then necessary. I very well my just delete IE 100% and load Mozillia. I have run for 2 years with IE. Had other problems but nothing like this.

What is the best spyware I should use?

I have a feeling it is all driven by a setting being changed since it just came back from the factory. I just dont know what setting. I'm going to look at tools and make sure pop ups are blocked. Then look into a download to help search my system.

I have had way too many lap TOP issues in the last few MONTHS.

Thanks for your help,

Solve : One site won't open; error: server is taking too long to respond? Firefox?

Hello,
If anyone can help me, please. I have been ABLE to access a site for over a YEAR, then suddenly last week their server went down for two days, when it came back up, however, I was not able to access this one site at all. The error MESSAGE: "....net" is taking too long to respond." I am on Firefox. However, others using other software can access that site EASILY now.
Tried to download a new browser, IE7, but that just gives me another error message??? error: '/root/Desktop/IE7Setup_G.exe' is not available or fully up to date...???please help and thanks...The problem may be the Internet and you local service provider. Some days things just do not work right.
But, just to be sure, notice if there seems to be a lot of traffic on your modem or outer even when yum are not doing anything. That could indicate that your system is being used by some background service. Which would be OK if you hd started it. Not OK if you have no idea what it is. There may in fact be a lot of action on my modem..and thanks for your input. But, it's been days and I haven't been able to access for work purposes; any ideas? What site ? ?

Solve : What IE8 add-ons are musts??

Answer»

I have a problem, no right-click menu, that is obviously being caused by an add-on, because my Internet Explorer is FINE when I run it in the No Add-ons Mode. I've disabled a lot of the add-ons, but I'm still having a problem and there isn't much left except for things such as java and flash. What are the add-ons that one can't do without and are the rest not needed, such as AVG Safe Search? There really isn't a lot left that I can disable. I have Super Ad Blocker, surely this can't be what's causing this because I've used it with IE7 and MAYBE since then too.Quote from: Tetra on May 13, 2009, 06:36:08 AM

Are you answering your own question?

It sounds like you are overloaded with ad-ons... why are you using so many? IE prity much TAKES care of ad blocking any good anti-virus software should control pop-ups and ILLEGAL access. It sounds like you have done over-kill.

IE isn't in Programs and Features. It's under Windows Components.http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/fastFaqLiteDocument?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=18703&docname=bph07138#N313

Try resetting internet explorer (there's instructions from HP's website which look good) and resetting IE, assuming nothing goes wrong, is meant to fix IE if it's in an unusable state back to factory settings. Hopefully it helps you with the issue.

Solve : Cannot change themes in firefox?

Answer»

Hello-
I have a problem with installing a theme in firefox.
I have firefox 3.0.10.
Previously I had 3.0.9 and had the same problem.
When I go to Tools-Add-Ons-Themes and select a theme, I can click the "Use Theme" Button and then firefox says re-start now? and I go OK and then it says firefox will remember my pages and it closes and re-starts and the default theme is still there!!
I've been to the Standard Diagnostic page-->http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox
and tried everything they suggested but to no avail.
I don't know why it seems so important to change the look of my browser but it bothers me and I don't know what to do?
Can anyone suggest something?

I used "Search Add-ons" with key words "theme switcher extension" and got one hit:

and apparently it was for older versions of firefox.
Do you know of a link for a theme switcher extension for firefox 3.0.10? I use the Mr. Tech Toolkit extension to enable older extensions to install on newer Firefox RELEASES...Well- I downloaded Mr Tech Toolkit extension and now when I navigate to Tools-Add-ons and go to Mr. Tech Toolkit I click on the Options button and the Add-ons window freezes.
When I click anywhere on it my computer beeps at me and nothing happens.
I cannot even close the window.
I need to use the Task Manager to terminate the process.
What HAPPENED?Not sure what to say....i have zero issues with FireFox.
Mr.Tech Toolkit has never locked up on me.
Perhaps your profile is corrupt. Create a new Profile to test....It seems like a lot of work.
I have enough on my plate right now without having to fix Firefox, so I'm thinking I'll switch to Google Chrome.
I read the results of the poll and it seems that the general consensus is that Chrome is the fastest.
Also I'm intrigued with the simplicity of it.
No Menu
No skins
I haven't yet made it my default browser, but I'm definitely considering it.
Thanks to all who tried to help.
If anyone has anything further to add I would welcome any suggestions, comments, whatever.
-N I had the same problem but I finally found a firefox extension called Personas for firefox. It worked just fine for me and is very easy to use. Just download the extension and choose from the gallery.

Solve : IE 7 keeps closing?

Answer»

Well hello there. You guys helped me out 3 years ago, glad to see you all still here. Ok, so here goes, my IE 7 keeps closing after about 20 minutes being online. Not sure what going on. It happens with all diffrent sites. I get an error, that SAYS "Internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close", and if I want to send an error report to MS (which I never do, but anyway).

I ALSO have Firefox and have no issues there. Other users can use IE7 on their desktops with no problems, so it seems to be only on my desktop.

I've got; XP, 2002, SP3, Pent 4 CPU 2.79 GHz, 1.50 GB of RAM
I did Free internet Eraser, ran AVG, but nothing found. I use windows Firewall.
Sorry I've searched the 1st 14 pages and didn't see this particular issue, if I missed it I apologize in advance.

And of course I've been on for about 40 mints now and it's not HAPPENING..... But for when and if it does occur again, what's a girl to do
TIAClose IE.
Go START>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, and click on Internet Explorer (no add-ons). Same thing?Another suggestion .... try resetting internet explore to see if it helps. See here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737

Uninstall it and get a new one from windows update.

There is no uninstall in control/add and remove- do I uninstall in "windows COM ponents" section of add and remove/control panelHow did you DETERMINE that IE is corrupt ? ?If you SEE it in add / remove programs then remove it so that you will GO back to the earlier version of IE. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/fastFaqLiteDocument?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=18703&docname=bph07138#N313

Maybe you want to reset IE7 before you uninstall, take look at HO's website above for INSTRUCTIONS, it's good!

Solve : IE8 opens for a milisecond then closes instantly?

Answer»

So i have recently installed internet EXPLORER 8 on my Windows xp professional and it never worked. The previous versions(ie7 and lower) worked perfect and i just wanted to TEST out the NEWEST one. I cleanly installed it, no errors at all. I restarted my computer but there was no icon on my desktop. so i went to start > run and typed iexplore. which i believe is internet explorer. But it just pops up and closes instantly. I don't believe i have any viruses because i run an avg scan every 2 days and nothing pops up. Greatly appreciate any help. Check this out! It's a help list from HP's website! You should try resetting internet explorer 8, and see if it works, but if you still can't get it to work, then MAYBE stay with IE7.

But why would Virgin know the connection specifications of MSN/hotmail? Isn't that asking one shop about another SHOPS products? (in BLIGHTY you do that sort of THING and the rival shop tells you how rubbish that shop is and how you shouldn't shop there). The POP and SMTP settings allow you to send and recieve mail thru Thunderbird and come from your ISP.
Once that's up and running you should be able to reach your Hotmail account as well...I have mine working, I'll transcribe it here:

Server Name: pop3.live.com

Username: [emailprotected]

Port: 995

use Secure Connection is set to "SSL" "Use secure authentication" is unchecked.

Outgoing is found lower down, add a SMTP server entry:

Server name: smtp.live.com

Port: 587

I have "use name and password" checked off. And use secure connection is set to TLS.

Nope, don't think that my phone is gonna have any of it. Thanks anyway.Quote from: Accessless on September 17, 2009, 04:36:08 AM

Solve : Why can't I get right-click menu in IE8??

Answer»

Ever since I downloaded IE8 I've had the problem of not getting a right-click menu. First, with Vista and now with Windows 7, the same thing. When I first did a clean install of Windows 7, the right-click menu in Internet Explorer 8 worked fine, then later on it started doing the same thing. Are there certain add-ons that are known for causing this? Disabling some of them to see has not worked out. Could there possibly be something else causing this? Has anybody else had this problem before?Sometimes a particular Internet Explorer add-on will cause this issue.

Please read and follow the instructions very carefully here: HTTP://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx

Though the above instructions refer to Internet Explorer 7, the same troubleshooting steps may be used for Internet Explorer 8.[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Modify/Create the VALUE Data Type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below.
Data Type: DWORD // Value Name: NoViewContextMenu
Setting for Value Data: [0 = Disabled / 1 = ENABLED]
Exit Registry and Reboot

That registry folder path ended in a dead end for me. A solution I found on another forum that COMPLETELY solved the problem for me:
Go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions

If there is a Key called NoBrowserContextMenu, double click it and change the value to 0.

No computer restart is required. You might NEED to restart IE, but that's about it.Well it's been 3 months...we'll see if either of them return...

Solve : Switching to Mozilla?

Answer»

wow, not even one hour and I've already noticed a big difference in the feel for Mozilla/Firefox, switching from IE8. It may be all in my head but it just SEEMS like a much lighter LOAD. PAGES seem to load faster and I doubt I'll have any problems with the text box jumping around, when I'm trying to write a post.Welcome to Mozilla Firefox.

You may want to look through the Firefox Add-Ons:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/

My first recommendation is:
Download STATUSBAR: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/26
thanks CarbonI'd give you a list of all the add-ons I have, but it would take too LONG for me to go through all 100+ of them.

3174.

Solve : Firefox Problems?

Answer»

Surely add-ons are the main issue here.
The more of them you have, the longer it takes for firefox.exe process to end, but I don't care anymore since I don't have to restart FF anymore. With Session Manager disabled, the Firefox process TERMINATED much faster than before, however it still takes about 5-10 seconds.

Firefox (Safe Mode) has no problems at all, so I must conclude that an add-on is causing this. However, I'm not in the mood to go disabling my ~100 add-ons one at a time... Perhaps later...

My other laptop doesn't have this problem, and has about 80% of the add-ons this one has.
I'll have to investigate further...

How come? Whaddya do?I told you. When I disabled GM, I don't have RAM usage problem anymore.Ah right. Interesting.....

I remember you had all those scripts for rounding buttons and text fields. Yeah, I miss them a little, but I'd rather not have RAM issues.Been following your REPLIES and I blame a program I downloaded from the Tor site, it was a program to hide my ISP so that I could watch English TV here in Tenerife.
I still haven't sorted my problem but I've instructed the household not to close FF until shutting down the computer. I've tried everything suggested on the Mozilla site but still no go, awaiting a reply from Firefox crew but I don't hold out much hope. I know that the problem is that FF does not remove the Parent lock from Profiles but don't know why because it obviously REMOVES it on shutdown.

DaveYou can shut down FF any time you want. You just have to wait a few seconds before starting up again.I can't open FF once I close it until I reboot. That,s the problem!
DaveDownload taskkill and copy it to C:\Windows\System32.

Now go to Notepad and type the following:
Code: [Select]taskkill /f /im firefox.exe
Go to File --> Save As --> Filename.bat.

Now, when you close Firefox, run that batch file and see if you can start FF again.Cheers Carbon,

It does work so will save me rebooting each time,

Many THANKS,

DaveGlad I could help.

You may want to try disabling that add-on to see if it really the cause of the problem.Hi,
Too long winded to go into it but I have removed every folder & File using the search function of the program but I think it must have left some residual .dll file or something which I can't find, anyway it's not a problem with the taskkill.

DaveOkey dokey.

As far as uninstalling & re-installing is concerned, that's a NO JOKE with plenty of Extensions already queued up in the existing version!

Guys..couldn't we get anything SIGNIFICANT with the "Error Code", Just check out this attached file ..again!

At the risk of REPEATING myself ... again! ... there is something wrong with the Firefox installation. If you can't be bothered to reinstall, try a different browser. And if you don't like the advice you're receiving here, there are many other places where VOLUNTEERS will be willing to advise. But I suspect you will get the same advice there.

Since this is likely to be a Firefox-specific problem - maybe a known bug - you could try over at the Mozilla forums for some specialist advice.

Note that you SHOULD be seeing that "error code", whether Firefox is working or not. The problem is that Firefox is not offering any options.also of interest, is that is the error dialog Internet Explorer 4 and 5 throw up, I believe.

What do you think we should be able to do? Fix it from here? As KPAC said, we already KNOW what the error is, the trick is finding out WHY your getting that alert, rather then the default page.

Solve : Can't see web page background?

Answer»

My niece gets only white or gray on web page backgrounds no matter what's there. Colored Pictures and material put ON the web page work fine, but a background picture and colors won't show. Also, all the print comes up black, even when at a page with colored fonts.

I was unable to locate ANYTHING from the browser that would help. She's running windows XP.

Thanks in advance.Wings...... Is this something that has just started or has it always been like that?
Have you gone into the CONTROL panel and checked the display settings?

dl65 Almost exactly my question to her. The ANSWER was she didn't think it had always been that way, but it had been that way for so long she couldn't really remember.

Nothing I did in control panel had any effect. No, don't remember what all I did now.Wings... Do you know what resolution her monitor is set to ? Is it possible to have her post a screen print of say this post for us to see ?

dl65 Try IE>Tools>Internet Options>General>Accessibilty> Untick the boxes and see if that helps.I am SO glad that I found this link, if only because it lets me know that I am not the only one that has had this issue. Unfortunately, NOTHING is fixing this issue for me. I've had this problem for 3-4 weeks now and I have NO IDEA what else I can do. I've checked display options, accessibility options are all disabled... I'm REALLY LOST!!! I'm beginning to wonder if this has to do with a visual studio or something... i've played around with my options so much over the last month that I've gone to and back... even tried so much that i accidentally locked my display resolution on lowest color quality... thankfully i was able to fix it BACK to where I could get higher resolutions, but so far there is NOTHING that i've done that has allowed my backgrounds to come back. the funny thing is, is that my windows desktop background picture is just fine. it's ONLY the backgrounds to windows... both active & inactive... ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated!!! i've been so DEDICATED to solving this issue that my hubby thinks that I have changed professions & have started working full-time on repairing computers!!! HA HA if only it provided health benefits!!! HA HA
Alright... so my computer: Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3 - and no... this problem was not evident when i installed SP3... everything was still working great long after i installed SP3.
I FORGOT to add that I switched to IE 8 without any problems as well.

Solve : Web based email security questions??

Answer»

I hope this is the right area of the forum to post this.
I USE yahoo.com EMAIL and have for several years. I'm no guru with computer stuff and mainly just like to experiment with the mechanics of PC hardware ect. But I do have some stuff on my yahoo email saved FOLDERS that I don't really want viewed by just anyone. Lately I've noticed when I'm logged into yahoo mail the little circle looking thing in Vista that goes round and round when internet activity is processing just never quits going round and round. I don't know SPECIFICALLY what this means but I don't feel like Yahoo mail is secure as what I would like.
A few years back I used Outlook Express as my email program with settings provided by my ISP (bellsouth.net) . All the messages, folders ect were saved on my PC rather than on the web.
!st question is - is the pc based email, rather than web based, more secure?
2nd - why is the activity thing showing constant activity when I'm logged onto yahoo mail?|
3rd - I live in a separated half of a large house and my land lord just switched our ISP from DSL to cable. I don't really know exactly when I first noticed this problem but I don't think the ISP change was the culprit, I believe I noticed it before that change.
4th - If I change to pc based email account, how is the best way to transfer all my yahoo mail account saved folders to either my hardrive or my pc based folders?
Sorry for so many questions but this is the place I get the best help.
Thanks to everyone at CHP for that.
Mike1st: there is no such thing as "PC based" E-mail. What happens with ISP based E-mail is it get's automatically downloaded from their mail-server to your PC; or more precisely, outlook automatically downloads it. so it's really only as secure as their mail-server. (which usually is quite ACCEPTABLE).

2: Couldn't say. I get similar behaviour from Hotmail sometimes. Seems like a laggy script or something.

Let's change our terminology here and say POP mail, not "pc based email". POP, or POP3, mail is really what you're talking about. Quote from: lectrocrew on June 03, 2009, 12:25:18 AM

4th - If I change to pc based email account, how is the best way to transfer all my yahoo mail account saved folders to either my hardrive or my pc based folders?
I don't believe you can, since Yahoo Mail is web-based mail. Yahoo does have a fee-based version which allows downloading your Yahoo mail to a POP email client such as Outlook or Outlook Express; I believe that email service costs $20/yr.

Otherwise, you could setup a POP mail account, logon to your Yahoo Mail account, and forward Yahoo messages to yourself, to your POP mail account. How can I get the settings from my ISP for setting up a POP mail account other than calling the company on my phone (or having my landlord do it), which is what I did last time I had a POP account years ago?Look on their web site?I have Cox cable ISP but all I see on their site is webmail.

I'll try again when I get time. Thanks for posting the link for me.No problem. Let us know if you're still stuck.

Solve : Javascript and CSS errors?

are you currently developing your own site?? or you can get that error, when visiting yahoo, google or any sites??Those errors are the webpage's problems, not your computer's.

It's all a compatibility issue, really, so the Yahoo site wasn't made with Opera in mind. Ok, but why then did it happen with Firefox too? I got many of the same errors, which is why I went looking for a new browser and found Opera.Trust me! These are all the website's problems.

The errors will vary depending on browser, and browser version, so that's probably why it's happening on your browsers.Oh, I believe you, so I hope it works with IE or something. What browser should work?Is Opera and Firefox up-to-date? You could try IE.Hm. Wait a minute. This makes NO SENSE.
I'm sure that it can't be the browser, becuase I'm getting the same errors on IE, Opera AND Firefox. And I KNOW this stuff works on friends/family on those browsers. I know at least two of the three are up to date.Quote

kpac's trying to tell you that the problems are with the site itself, and not the
browser with which you're trying to view the site.Quote from: Kingofall32 on May 28, 2009, 03:53:47 PM

And this would prove that it's the site...not the browser.Yeah, sorry, I said that wrong. What I meant is how do these problems happen only on my computer? My friend's computer doesn't have these, neither do my Grandmothers or anyone else?

*I wish I knew more about internet *Well you are kind of right actually - this is confusing.

What operating system are these browsers with the errors on?Yeah, so many people haven't been able to help me.

I've got a gaming Dell XPS 400 with Windows XP, CA Security Suite as my internet protection and firewall and such.

Could it be registry errors, by any chance?Quote from: Kingofall32 on May 29, 2009, 04:38:07 AM
Could it be registry errors, by any chance?

Very unlikely.

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Save it to a convenient location like the Desktop.
* The log is also automatically saved and can be viewed later by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy and Paste the contents of the report in your REPLY.
* Exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.Guys,

The problem might not exist at the browser or the web site. Misbehaving proxy servers (which includes the filtering capabilities of some internet security suites) have a habit of munging ancillary files such as external stylesheets and scripts. So two thoughts arise: one, try browsing to a problematic website with CA temporarily disabled. Second, confirm whether your ISP provides your internet service via a proxy. (Like AOL.)

Web acceleration software can also have this effect, incidentally.

Solve : Firefox versus IE?

Answer»

I have Firefox installed, but when SIGNING in to my e-mail, I always have to type my address in. I still USE IE as well, because my address always shows. Am I causing my own problems here? Hello!:)
I think your Fiefox is set to CLEAR your private data. You could check it out at Tools > Clear Private Data or TOOL > Options > Security/Privacy tabTools-->Options-->Privacy. Is "Remember what I type in forms..." ticked?

Solve : Fire Fox is fine, but IE's Java doesn't work and certain pop-ups don't come up?

Answer»

I have been having this STRANGE problem with IE for almost a year now, but I put it off because I would use Fire Fox. Fire Fox has had absolutley no problems for me, however to use certain things like Tripod's text editor for websites, I can only use IE pluggins.

so here's the problem, internet explorer runs fine, however anything requiring Java (or atleast I think thats the problem) doesn't work. The best way to explain this would be this. Go to MLB.com. Normal computers will see the (atleast I think they are) java features like on the left, the blue/black scoreboard with teams showing who will be facing who. You should also see a slide show in the center. Also, if I wave the mouse over the "TEAM Sites," a dropdown should happen

When I go there via IE, I can only see the Headlines portions on the right with the blue links. Where the scoreboard is, I only see the grey background which it overlaps, as if it was REMOVED. Also the slideshow is missing, just a white square. Also The drop down menu for team sites doesn't drop down

What's going on? This kind of stuff happens on these java type features on a lot of sites.

The other problem is, if I click on something that will open a new window or tab, it won't show. I think the best example would be if I were trying to download something, I wouldn't get the pop-up and Popup blocker is off.Hm... make sure Java is enabled in Internet Explorer first.

Click "Tools" --> "Internet Options"
SELECT the Advanced Tab, and scroll down to "Java (Sun)"
Check the box next to the Java version
Next, select the Security Tab, and select the "Custom Level" button
Scroll down to "Scripting of Java applets"
Make sure the "Enable" radio button is checked.
Click OK to save your preference.
Yeah I've already tried that hm... reinstall Java?how do I do that?

Also Im not even sure if its a Java Problem. I think some of this RELATES back to an older issue I had. My cousin said something about one of the scripts in a program in my computer might be off. I don't know anymore lol. Still how do I uninstall itWhat IE version is it?

Please download [color="#FF8C00"]JavaRa[/color] to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder

 • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
 • Accept any prompts.
 • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
 • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

Solve : 404 file not found??

Answer»

I have two computers both linked to the internet. I can surf the net just fine on one but on the other I just get 404 errors. Please help I have no idea ware to even begin. Is this on the same Website?Yes it is on the same Website
I should need to clarify more.
The first and second computers are hp.
They are both using internet explorer.
I can ACCESS the web sites on one but the second gives me a 404 error when I try to access the same sites.Okay....a 404 error isn't usually an error with your computer - it just means that the page you looked for doesn't exist.

But since this is happening only on one computer, there must be something going on.

On the PC with the problems, follow this information.

 • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
 • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
 • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
 • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
 • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
 • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
 • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
 • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in Notepad.
 • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
 • Come BACK here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
 • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or required by the system.

Solve : IE8 Uninstall query?

Answer»

I haven't upgraded at the moment as l'm still trawling around looking through peoples's pros and cons. If l were to INSTALL it and then want to remove it, l checked out the MICROSOFT site to do this and within the same paragraph they say -

After you install Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), you cannot uninstall Windows INTERNET Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8.
and
Note This issue does not occur if you install Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8 after you install Windows XP SP3.

Am l going doolally or what! Don't these two statements contradict themselves?

If l've got XP (sp3) can l or can l not revert back to IE7?
LOL! Two options...
1) Microsoft are being Microsoft
2) We're both doolally

The answer is, yes, you can go back to IE7 if you don't like IE8.Thanks for that Kpac,
The more l looked at the two statements, the more confused l was getting!

Solve : I think I'm computer jinxed!?

Answer»

I am using a Toshiba Satellite running an AMD Turion 64 X 2 with 2.00 GB Ram. I an using Internet Explorer which is the problem.

It constantly freezes and leaves a message that it has a problem. I then close it and reopen. This is getting tiresome.

I installed Mozilla Firefox but it didn't bring over my Favorites, etc. but it did bring over Open OFFICE which I don't want and can't uninstall without uninstalling Mozilla.

Anyone have any suggestions on IE that will help? Thanks in advance.

SandraWhat do you mean "it brought over open office"? Firefox is a standalone app. And it should identify and import your favorites during the install, but if it doesn't just go to File - Import / Export.

Uninstall Firefox and open office and download Firefox from here: HTTP://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ie.html Allan, that was a mistake on my part. I installed Open Office the other day and tried to uninsall it. There is no way, that I can find, to uninstall it.

It popped up when I was trying to find information on how to get my Favorites imported into Mozilla, which I still haven't found.

I jumped to conclusions about Mozilla bringing it. Sorry for the misinformation and thanks for the link to Mozilla.Quote from: Allan's sig

Again, in Firefox click on FILE - IMPORT - INTERNET EXPLORER.............Are you saying Open Office doesn't appear in ADD / REMOVE in Control Panel? And again, just FYI, Open Office and Firefox are separate apps unless you installed the Open Office add-on in Firefox.Yes, that is what i am saying. When I downloaded Firefox all I did was hit the download button, hit run, etc. Nothing came up about addons.

The Open Office is coming up as my home page, even though I have another page set as my home page, when I click on Firefox to get on the internet. I sincerely think me or my compute, or both, are jinxed.

SandraSandra, I looked on Google and there seem to be a number of people with a problem uninstalling Open Office. Did you intentionally download and install Open Office? If not, can you provide the link where you originally downloaded Firefox?

Also, just for the heck of it please do two other things. Please run a full scan with your anti virus utility and also download Malware Bytes and run a full scan with that too.If I'm reading this right, Nonnie has a problem with Open Office establishing itself as Firefox home page. Is that so?Perhaps I misunderstood. Sandra, is it just that Firefox's homepage is Open Office, or is Open Office installed on your system?I may be wrong as well. Let's see...Allan, I, too checked Google and found that many people have this problem.

I installed OO myself. I Googled Open Office and found the link www.openoffice.org and downloaded it from there.

I have tried going to Programs and Features (I have Vista) and it's not listed there and I have tried using a search for it and find nothing on my computer.

I will run the anti-virus scan and the malware scan and get back with you tomorrow.

Thanks for now.

Sandra

Allan, I ran the anti-spy ware and the Malware. Everything was okay on the anti-spyware. Here's what the malware says:

Invali Shortcut 117
Tracking Cookie 6
Window Registry 18
Active X Control 54
System Service 1
File ASSOCIATION 179
Shared DDL 45
Application Path 4
Help File 1
All the other listings had 0Okay - you can let Malware Bytes fix everything. Do you use a disk imaging utility? If not, I suggest you (and everyone else) download one and use it on a regular basis (and before you let MalwareBytes make the corrections - just in case). I am a FAN of Acronis True Image, but that's not free. There are a number of good, free alternatives (Google: Free Disk Imaging Software).

If that doesn't fix it I suggest you try the following: Reinstall Open Office to the exact same location. See if it appears in Programs & Features. If it does, uninstall it. If not, see if there is an uninstall.exe in the Program folder (may be "uninstall.exe", "unwise.exe", or something similar).

Solve : Cannot access Yahoo mail with Firefox - "connection interrupted"?

Answer»

I used the CCleaner to remove unwanted cookies. My understanding is that if I accidentally removed a cookie that was useful, a new one would be loaded next time I visited that particular site, right?

After I used the CCleaner, for some reason I could not get into my Yahoo email account. I don't know if there's a cause & effect there or not. I use Mozilla Firefox 5.0 on a PC. I have McAfee Desktop Firewall 8.5
I can get onto the yahoo webiste, but when I tried to log onto my email account I get the following error message:

Connection interrupted
The connection tot he server was reset while the page was loading.
The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again.

It kept doing this so I uninstalled Yahoo from my add/remove programs. I went on the Yahoo home page, which I could access, but when I try to sign up for email again, I get the same connection interruption message. What now?I used the CCleaner to remove unwanted cookies. My understanding is that if I accidentally removed a cookie that was useful, a new one would be loaded next time I visited that particular site, right? Yes.

I use Mozilla Firefox 5.0 on a PC. There is no 5.0, only 3.5.2 so far.

Have you tried turning off the firewall and trying to access your email?

Alan <>< YUP, that's what it was I feel like a dope. No reason to...that's how we all learn. If your firewall was blocking it, you need to configure your firewall so that it's won't BLOCK. Do not live on the Internet without firewall protection. If you can't get McAfee to work for you, try another firewall. The weird thing is I've never had a problem until just now. Why would I be allowed onto the Yahoo homepage but not onto the mail logon screen?

Are you familiar with McAfee firewalls? I have McAfee DEsktop Firewall 8.5

I'm not sure how to include that particular page to be allowed on the firewall.
I'm not familiar with McAfee firewalls. You might try http://community.mcafee.com/

I have a Yahoo Mail account and can access it with Firefox. I'm using Windows firewall; I'm also behind a router, which provides additional firewall protection. If you're not using a router, I suggest you enable Windows firewall during any time that you disable McAfee's firewall. Don't use both at the same time, but at least have one running so that you have firewall protection.I found a blocked web page with someone's help. All is WELL. Thanks for your help. Thanks for posting back. Glad to hear problem solved. Ditto Soybean

Solve : Website issues?

Answer»

About two weeks ago I started having nonstop problems GETTING onto a website. It will tell me my link is broken.
Sometimes (like right now) I'm able to get on and it runs fine for minutes at a time. But most of the other times I cannot connect.
I've emailed tech support for the website who have told me to use IE 6 or higher (I do), download javascript (I did) and do other security settings to enable me to get on on the first TRY. I've done all this and still have these issues. I'm fine with other websites..

Thanks in advancehi there.
First of all i would like to know what is that website that you are trying to access that gives you errors? What is the windows version that you have and what type of internet connection you are using (dsl, wireless.. etc..)I'm trying to get on weightwatchers.com. I have windows XP. I have roadrunner high speed (3g).
Thanks for your hlep! What browser, version? Did you try another browser?HI,
Sorry, IE6 with service pack 3. I'm trying firefox right now to see if it will work. My roomate is having the same issue on his computer also...
Does your roommate use IE6 as well?yup.
And this just started maybe two weeks ago. Before it was no problem to log in. I THINK WW has upgraded something and I just can't log on.
I just got the same message with Firefox. "Page load error".
I have Bitdefender on my computer, but that was never a problem.
I assume, you're using router, correct?
If so, turn computer off, unplug modem, and router from the power source. Wait 1 minute.
Plug everything back.
Restart computer.another thing, try CONNECTING your computer directly to the modem, without the router to see if it works.Quote from: medalliongirl on June 14, 2009, 06:46:49 PM

IE6 with service pack 3.
Do you mean service pack 3 for Windows XP? There is no service pack 3 specifically for IE6. And, if you have service pack 3 for Windows XP, why in the world are you still using IE6? Get IE7.Quote from: medalliongirl on June 14, 2009, 06:46:49 PM

do you mean you cant log in because you do have a firewall

Solve : Problem Viewing YouTube?

Answer»

Well, another week another problem. I'm running WIN2000, and IE6-SP1 and am suddenly unable to view videos through YouTube. I get a message that I either have Java script turned off, or don't have the latest version of Flash Player.

I downloaded Flash Player's latest, and the problem still exists.

I've made no changes that I KNOW of to Java, but I also downloaded its latest version. I can find no switch to either turn Java script on or off anywhere.

I've looked through MicroSoft's Help section, and can find no answers. I've disabled my FIREWALL and my anti-virus program, and the problem continues

Does anyone know how to determine if Java Script is running; or how to enable it if it is not?System Restore to a day when all was well.

Try using the flash updater by
Going to C:\windows\system32\Macromed\Flash, and run FlashUtil9b.exe

and if all doesn't work.

try uninstalling flash completely. then reinstalling it cleanly from the latest on adobe.com

Solve : Carbonite error when opening IE?

Answer»

I used PCMover to MOVE data and applications from an xp pro computer to a Vista 64 bit machine. Now when I open Internet Explorer I get the following message:

"Carbonite was unable to access the registry (error result is 5). Carbonite cannot run without using the registry an the program has been stopped."

Carbonate is an on-line backup program. I tried un-installing and reinstalling it but still get the message.

Thanks ahead for your help.

SkipThe following was Carbonite Support's response to my question. I followed the steps and the problem resolved. I don't know what sort of security issues might result from turning off the user account control, but for now I'm going with it.

We apologize for the inconvenience. Such issues occur in Windows Vista due to its feature "User Account Control". User Access Control for security purpose limit application software such as Carbonite to standard user privileges until an administrator authorizes an increase in privilege level. Please perform the following steps to turn of User Account Control (UAC) and then, check your ISSUE.

Click Start and then open Control Panel.
In the Control Panel, click User Accounts and Family Safety.
Click User Accounts.
Click Turn User Account Control on or off.
Clear the tick or check mark on the box beside the Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer option.
Click OK.
When prompted, restart the computer. Note that the changes will affect all users on the computer.
To enable the UAC, simply tick or select the checkbox again.
I've used Carbonite on a number of machines - and certainly wouldn't recommend turning off the UAC! It can be a pain in the derriere, but it also acts as the security feature for surfing with IE7. I'd turn it back on if I were you.

I'm surprised Carbonite didn't pick up on the issue though - Carbonite's software is tied to the machine it's installed on. If you move accounts you would need to uninstall Carbonite from the XP Pro computer, and then using the same account details you first registered with create a new account on the VIsta machine - there system SHOULD still then give you access to all of the FILES you ORIGINALLY backed up.Thanks PCWizard! I turned it back on and will contact Carbonite if the issue resurfaces. I guess it's better to deal with a little inconvenience than to expose the computer to a potentially greater inconvenience.

SkipI am also a regular backup software user and have used Carbonite several times. I was satisfied with the software and never had any troubles. Turning off the UAC is definitely not the solution to the problem since it works PERFECTLY for me (having UAC activated). Maybe you want to take a look at this Carbonite Backup review and see if it helps to solve your problems. I have to add that I don't use IE so I can't say anything about that issue.

Solve : Amazon.com Doesn't load for me?

Answer»

Hello everyone.
I'm back with my new issue.
I'm using IE 7 and everything seems to work fine.
But for some weird REASON I can't get to Amazon. com
I would appriciate your help.
=]What's happening when you try to access Amazon.com?
Are you getting any error messages?
Are you just getting a plane white PAGE?It says that Internet Explorer cannot display this page What type of internet connection do you have? (Cable, dsl wireless.. etc)DSLAlright,
Try downloading and running this http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1. This is called ATF cleaner that is being USED to delete temporary files from the computer. Please put a check mark on "Select all" then click "Empty selected".

After running ATF cleaner then try the following:
1. Click tools - Internet options - Security
2. Click Trusted sites - Click the "Sites button"
3. On the "Add this website to the zone" box type : https://*.amazon.com
4. Then click "add", then click close.
5. Click ok.
6. Then close then reopen internet explorer and trying accessing Amazon.com

If that doesn't work, Try checking the date and time of your computer if they are correct.

Please reply if the steps above solved or did not solve the issue.
Goodluck.

Alright I will try and let you know =] thanks I just did everything but it does the same thing. I checked the time it's also correct =[What FIREWALL do you have running?I have no idea, if there's a way to check it I will.. Sorry I'm not really good with comps =[Are you running Windows XP ?
To check
1. click start , right click My computer (or computer in vista), select properties.

Please provide the exact system information.
thank you It says nothing about firewall in properties hmmm Okay, are you using Windows Firewall?

To check:
Go to Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall.

You might not be using Windows Firewall, so, check for the following in your installed programs list (through Control Panel):
CA Personal Firewall
Zone Alarm
PC Tools Firewall
Comodo Personal Firewall
Sunbelt Personal Firewall
Lavasoft Firewall
McAfee Personal Firewall Plus

You might also have the following:
Bullguard Internet Security
F-Secure Internet Security
Kaspersky Internet Security
Norton Internet Security
Panda Internet Security
Trend Micro Internet Securitymmm.. Sorry, however what we are trying to check on the System properites is about the Windows version of your computer it is Windows XP Home edition , XP professional or if it is a Windows Vista

to check what is the current firewall running in the computer
You could click on start - control pannel an open Security center, then you will see the section that says about the firewall of the computer. Ok... my windows firewall is on... should i turn it off??
I checked the program list and i couldnt find any of those there was just some security updates for windows and capicom (no idea what that is )

Solve : explorer acting slow... is it because of how i closed it??

Answer»

being a vista *shudder* user, internet explorer stops working a lot. I just wrote a short batch file in order to force a shutdown of IE, instead of having to go ctr+alt+del, or waiting forever for it to close itself. heres the code:
"@ECHO off

ECHO Y = Yes
ECHO N = No
ECHO Q = Quit

SET yesInput=Y
SET noInput=N
SET nInput=n
SET QInput=Q

ECHO force shutdown? Y/N/Q
SET /p var=

IF %var% EQU %noInput% GOTO second
IF %var% EQU %nInput% GOTO second
IF %var% EQU %QInput% GOTO end
IF %var% EQU %yesInput% GOTO kill

:kill
ECHO forcing termination...
taskkill /F /IM iexplore.exe
PAUSE
EXIT

:second
ECHO try to shutdown without force? Y/N/Q
SET /p var=

IF %var% EQU %noInput% GOTO end
IF %var% EQU %nInput% GOTO end
IF %var% EQU %QInput% GOTO end
IF %var% EQU %yesInput% GOTO stop

:stop
ECHO attempting to stop without force...
taskkill /IM iexplore.exe
PAUSE
EXIT

:end
EXIT"

It worked basically perfectly, EXCEPT that when i tried to restart explorer, it was extremely SLOW; i tried several more times and it stayed very slow. Is This because of the way i closed it, or it is just something normal? any help or IDEAS are APPRECIATED. thanks! I use Vista at work, and never have problems with Internet Explorer. (Using IE7.)

I'm not being critical, but perhaps there is a problem that is not just the fact that you're using IE and Vista.thanks. your probably right. i use IE8 (perhaps the problem) but i just wanted to know if there was any possibity that using the code i did, i somehow worsened the problem. thanks! You're on the right track. Lots of folks here who will take a look at your code for you.k. thanks!
