Solve : Making A Default Homepage?

Answer»

Not too sure about this forum, but will post here anyway.
Possibly a silly question, but someone has asked me to find out.
After Outlook Express, and before Windows Live (Vista), there was Windows MAIL (Vista).
Now can Windows Mail be made into the default homepage, and if so, how?
Thank YouLog into your e-mail account...
Copy the ADDRESS to the CLIPBOARD...
Open the broser of your choice and find start page settings...usually under Options...
Paste the address into the start page box...
Re-boot.Patio, my MAIN man.
Thanks very much.
Regards.You're very welcome...

Solve : IE/Firefox not working!?

Answer»

Alright, my computer is experiencing some very irritating problems most of it revolving around the internet. I'm using Vista Home edition and currently have three users on it. I'm only having problems with the one user account, the others don't SEEM to have any issues at all.

Internet explorer will not load CERTAIN pages. TD Easyweb (online banking), hotmail, facebook and various other pages will state that they are "done" loading but the page is completely blank. I was given some advice to try and use Firefox to see if the problems also show up there.

I tried DOWNLOADING it and the page loaded completely, except for the download button. I had to log onto another user's account to download it onto my computer. On that account it worked fine. I went back onto mine, and Mozilla consistently crashed and REFUSED to open at all.

Its really frustrating trying to figure out what to do at this point. I know its not any sort of connection problem as I am currently typing this on a laptop connected to the same internet.

I'm debating reinstalling Windows Vista to see if the problems will miraculously fix themselves.

Just a note:
-I've already tried restoring the system to the point before I had these problems. It wouldn't let me.
-I checked to see if Java was working, it says its running.
-These problems only occur on one user account, the other two have no problems at all.
-I've run virus/spyware SCANS and deleted any unnecessary files on the computer.

Please give me some suggestions, I'm about ready to chuck this computer out the window! first thing to try would run a virus scan
and clear all cookies and temp files in ie and firefoxQuote from: smeezekitty on August 24, 2009, 09:43:55 PM

first thing to try would run a virus scan
and clear all cookies and temp files in ie and firefox

Ran a virus scan, nothing came up.

I literally just downloaded Firefox so there is nothing to delete in it. Also tried reinstalling it.

Internet Explorer temp & cookies deleted with no change to the problem.

try Google Chrome and see if that works on your computer. what version of ie and ff
i dont know if this works on vista but
run command prompt as an admin and type SFC /scannow
btw you are one of the few that actually uses multiuser capibilitys
most people ether use one computer per person
or just have one user acount and have people share thatBoot to safe mode with network support. Can you get to those sites?

Solve : make mozilla cache file readable?

Answer»

Hi, I was recently on a popular image board, and had opened a substantial number of images in new tabs. However, when I started to save the images, I only got a few of them before the thread 404'd (died/ceased to be hosted due to overload).

I think there might be 2 different potential solutions for getting the images I have opened in my browser DOWNLOADED to the hard drive, but I need a bit of guidance. I'm using MOZILLA 1.7.13.

1) The browser window is still open, and I can still see the images in each of the tabs; I thought that I could right click + copy the image and then paste into another program like MS Paint or Photoshop (or EVEN Word), but none of the programs will let me do so (there is no evidence that the image makes it onto the clipboard). Is there some way of getting the image in the tab to save?

2) I figured the images would probably still be in my cache, so I searched and found my Mozilla cache at C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\mnq0ly5l.slt\Cache. I found the files corresponding to the time period I was looking for and then added the file extension ".jpg" to the end of the name, and that has given me a lot of the images.. However, I believe the rest (the one's I accessed earliest but want most) are in a file called "_CACHE_003_", but I don't know what extension to give it to make it readable. Below is a screencap of the properties of this file.

Can anyone suggest what extension to give this cache file to make it a viewable folder? Or, alternatively, suggest how I might get the images off the browser tabs?

Thanks in advance for your time and any advice you can offer

thanks for this, but so far it hasn't helped.

I tried dragging the cache file into firefox, but it can't go in the URL bar, and when I drag it anywhere else it just downloads it back to the hard drive unchanged.

I tried saving the page - File > Save Page As - but it gives me this message:

I am the PC Tech for a call center. We use google maps to check for surrounding stores that will get our customers what they need. I have over 200 COMPUTERS which all can access google with no problems. Then I have 1 that can't.
I tried everything I can think of. I can't ping it by google.com or the ip address the other computers see when I ping it. I get a page that says there was a DNS Server error. I tried 'ipconfig /flushdns'. Clearing browser cache, using a different browser. I get nothing. I thought it was only google.com, but I just tried to search with bing. I can pull up bing.com, but when I click search I get the same DNS Server error page. These are the only 2 sites I have found that do this.

Solve : Internet Explorer 8 unresponsive: «This window is busy...» message?

Answer»

I've been experiencing this occasional problem with IE8: Sometimes it stops responding indefinitely. When this happens, if I then click the X button to close the window, a message like this SHOWS up: «This window is busy. Closing this window may cause some problems. Are you sure you want to close it? OK/Cancel»
Is there a way to prevent this from happening or to workaround it when it occurs? Other IE8 users do also experience this? And more importantly, ANYONE knows what are those "problems" (referred in the error message) that may occur when I choose to close the window? You see, when this happens one are forced to close the IE window, or else IE remains unresponsive. have you tried re-installingYes, recently I reinstalled IE8, the version reinstalled was IE8 optimized for MSN, but it was still IE8 nevertheless. The problem described is the same that existed before reinstallation. Besides this problem, it should be NOTICED that IE8 takes significantly more time to start than its predecessor IE7, and takes much longer to open new tabs.

Thanks.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700#fixit4meYou can uninstall it first, but you need to have another browser like Firefox or something installed to get IE7 back. No, I'm almost certain that simply by uninstalling IE8 through the Add/Remove control panel, Windows will automatically roll back to IE7, you don't have to install it further.

Anyway, I decided not to uninstall IE8, IMO it has some nice additions and improved security over IE7. The problem of IE8 not responding (it "hangs," "freezes," or "locks up") is merely occasional in my case and probably only occurs in certain sites. I will try some workaround when the problem occurs again. Yes, it's true that IE8 also takes longer to start and to open new tabs than IE7, but I don't think any of this justifies uninstallation of IE8. I think the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. At least in my case. That's why I asked if anyone knows what are those "problems" referred in the error message that may occur when I close the busy window.

Solve : A follow up to IE8 rollback discussions?

Answer»

I also run XP/SP3, and unfortunately "upgraded" to IE8. I tried uninstalling through add/remove software and roll back to IE7, so did the GUYS at the computer repair PLACE when (through my own carelessness ) I GOT a virus (or 12). They said that they WOULD have had to uninstall the SP3, then uninstall IE8, reinstall 7, then reinstall the service pack, and still I might be stuck with 8, or have other problems. I checked the program list and it says IE7, but when I open it up it looks and acts like IE8. Guess I'm stuck, eh?
BTW, I use FF for most everything but the Microsoft updates, which is when I use IE.

(This is why I'm losing my hair...)Did you uninstall SP3 ? ?
NOTE: From what i've seen this is only neccessary if SP3 was installed AFTER IE8.No, I already had SP3, then upgraded to IE8. When I decided I didn't like it, and tried to uninstall it or roll back to 7, that's when I got the messages that said in essence: "tough tarts, toots."

Just something I heard. I have the srware iron clone which they say have no privacy issues. Though this ain't my main browser anyhow....

Solve : IE7 major problems with script errors and blank pages?

Answer»

Well, it looks like you have some serious system files problem.

Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (hold CTRL, and SHIFT, hit Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD (rarely in Vista case).
If sfc won't find any errors in Windows XP, it'll SIMPLY quit, without any message.
I've run the sfc / scannow command. took a long time to go through all the files, asking me several times to 'retry' the Windows CD, but always proceeding OK when I clicked 'retry'.
Finished EVENTUALLY, and closed without any message as you said.

Unfortunately the problem is persisting - still many blank pages, no videos, blank 'system RESTORE' window, 'script error' messages on 'User Accounts' page and whenever I try to print/search from a web page - everything as before.

Lots is still working, normal web-browsing, e-mail, other programmes etc.

Thanks for your continued interest, but where can I go from here?Try Windows repair: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/How-to-repair-Windows-XP-t138.htmlJust in case it's relevant, my Windows CD is Windows Professional with Service PAck 2 - version 2002. The system running on my PC is Service Pack 3, which I must have upgraded to on-line sometime since I originally installed the system. So the CD I have is not exactly the same system I'm running, although it all seemed to progress through the 'sfc / scannow' operation.Try repair anyway.
If any problems, you may need to slipstream SP3 into the CD: http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp3_cd.htmOK - making progress at last!
Did the repair - it's basically a reinstallation of XP from the original CD?
Some hiccups on the way - dialogue boxes coming up saying various files could not be found on the CD, even though I could see them there - had to cancel those files- 20 or so of them (I've got them recorded). Need to see over the next few days if that has any effect on the system. And initially Internet Explorer and Outlook Express weren't there.

But system now seems to be working OK. No script errors coming up, no blank pages yet, videos working. Can access System Restore tool.....

Presumably now just need to update Windows, including Service Pack 3 again (CD has installed original XP Pro with SP2). I'll let you know if there are any more problems.

But thanks very much for all your help, and sticking with it!
You're very welcome
Keep us updated.Good News indeed...
And if you plan on keeping XP for awhile i would take the time to follow Broni's link on slipstreaming SP3 into your XP CD.
It's a real time-saver once you've built it...

Answer»

Every time I close Firefox it automatically logs me out of EVERYTHING. When I REOPEN it I have to log back in to everything. I checked in options and I see a box that says Always clear my private data when I close Firefox but it's NOT checked.

It just started doing this in the last week. ANything else I can check?

I always check the boxes to remember me or keep me logged in. For EXAMPLE when I sign in to Yahoo and check the box that says keep me signed in for 2 weeks. But It signs me out automatically when I close Firefox. New profile: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Manager (half page down).this doesn't happen with internet explorer does it? just WONDERING It has happened to me on internet explorer, but only on my vista laptop.

Answer»

please helphello
more info please
besides just choose for example D:\program files\mozilla for the install directoryQuote

c DRIVE has no space
Assuming, Windows is installed on C, you need at least 15% of a free space for your computer to operate correctly.
If your free space is getting close to null, ONE day you'll wake up to unbootable computer.
Don't even think about installing anything until you free some space on drive C.evreyone says 15 % but its not true
the actual amount is 1mb
because i had it happen on a old laptop with 6gb hdd

when it has less then 1mb hdd left
it doesnt boot
it just shows a blue screen with 3 error messages

Solve : What is the best broweser to use? Does firefix have compatibility issues??

Answer» RIGHT now I have IE, the one that came w/ my computer (don't know what version it is.. but the computer is fairly new) - how can I tell the version?

ANYWAY.. I keep hearing that firefox is better and I want to get it BUT I am fearful that unlike IE that works w/ everything, Firefox has compatibility issues. Is this true? Anyone use firefox? What's the pros? Cons? I know there are add ons but the basic internet as it comes is what I am referring to.

Is it best to just stick w/ IE? I have also heard things about Google Chrome..
is that good?

I am not sure what to do.. any input from PERSONAL experience (not just stats, b/c I can read stats) would help.DLoad and install FireFox to see...
IE does not need to be touched and can be LEFT alone...
They can run side by side with no problem.

Anyone who said FireFox has compatibility issues has his own compatibility issues and probably should not have a PC...QUOTE from: PhantomAgony on June 03, 2009, 08:34:08 PM
Right now I have IE, the one that came w/ my computer (don't know what version it is..
Click Help, and then click About Internet Explorer to see what version you have.

If you install Firefox and/or Chrome, just keep in mind you need to tell Windows which one is your default browser. If, for example, you set Firefox as your default browser, then hyperlinks in email messages, Word Files, etc. will open a Firefox window. According to http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp, Firefox is now used for 47.7% of web browsing. That's a pretty strong statement supporting the popularity of Firefox.

I recently installed Chrome, too, just to take a look at it. I haven't used it much yet but it seems to be a worthy contender in the browser arena.

So, I have all THREE browsers on one computer. This does not cause problems. Again, one must be designated as default browser. That can be easily changed.I have 4 browsers installed on my computer; IE, Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari.
I would recommend Firefox and Safari, I use both them regularly.
Firefox is a very good browser, I didn't have any problems with it at all, and it has a lot of useful add-ons.
Safari is very easy to get used to, and runs just as Firefox, really good.

Google Chrome is also a nice browser, but I don't use it much because I don't really like the looks and I have to refresh some site before I can see them..

Just try some browsers, and then keep the one(s) that you like the most.

Solve : Farming Webpages .... any suggestions for data acquisition?

Answer»

I have been farming web sites for information through automated macros which dump the copy/pasted data into a database.

I am checking to see if anyone knows of an easier way to farm web sites for information than having to create a mouse/keyboard macro for each web site to farm information from for analysis?

MAYBE a piece of software that interfaces with the HTML source of the web page itself and copies to clipboard information after a specified flag such as a web site stating that it is 83 degrees out if you look at its source will show a field that shows 83 degrees and to copy it directly from HTML source.

Just want to also mention that... I have NO NEED to capture keystrokes or screenshots which could be used maliciously. I simply want an easier way to interface with static information provided openly to all public at these sites and have no need for dynamic data such as data entered by a user which could be used for the wrong means.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.Hi Dave. I do this kind of stuff from time to time. I TEND to use PHP, partly because I'm very FAMILIAR with at and partly because it's very good at processing text. Here's the general process:

  • if the web site requires authentication, programmatically send credentials by whatever means it normally requires (HTTP authentication, POST variables, etc) and allow cookies to be set
  • load page into variable
  • parse page using REGULAR expression PATTERN matching
  • dump extracted data into database, text file, whatever

And here's an example:

Code: [Select]<?php
/****************************************
*BEGIN:ConfigurecURL*
****************************************/
$ch=curl_init();
curl_setopt($ch,CURLOPT_POST,1);
curl_setopt($ch,CURLOPT_FOLLOWLOCATION,false);
curl_setopt($ch,CURLOPT_COOKIEJAR,dirname(__FILE__).'/cookie.txt');
curl_setopt($ch,CURLOPT_HEADER,1);
curl_setopt($ch,CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER,1);
/****************************************
*END:ConfigurecURL*
****************************************/

$post='username=username&password=password';
curl_setopt($ch,CURLOPT_URL,'http://www.example.com/login');
curl_setopt($ch,CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS,$post);

if($page=curl_exec($ch))
{
//Thatwasthelogin;nowtoretrievethepages:
$regexp='|insertregexpherewith(bracketsaroundtextwewanttosave)|isU';

//Pagetoparse
$url="http://www.example.com/start";

//Loadthepage
curl_setopt($ch,CURLOPT_URL,$url);
$page=curl_exec($ch);

//Findthedesiredtext
if(preg_match_all($regexp,$page,$result))
{
//dosomethingwiththematches
}

//Savethepage
if(file_put_contents("/somewhere/file.txt",$page))
{
echo"succeeded<br/>";
}else{
echo"FAILED<br/>";
}

}else{
echo"Loginfailed";
}
curl_close($ch);
?>Thanks Rob!

I am going to try this outCool. The hardest part is getting the regular expression right. Let me know if you need any more help.

Out of interest, this technique is usually called "web scraping" or sometimes (inaccurately) "screen scraping".

Solve : Bizarre connection problem with multiple browsers?

Answer»

I am starting an online graduate library science program later this week, with all coursework requiring me to access the UNIVERSITY of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's website (including my e-mail, forums for class "meetings," etc.). The site is www4.uwm.edu. Until about ten days ago I was able to access it without any problems. In the past ten days, I have been able to access it only intermittently, with the browser usually reporting that it can't find the DNS at www4.uwm.edu. When the browser does find the site, about one time in twenty attempts, everything works as normal. This is bizarre for the following reasons:

1. I can access any unencrypted pages in the site via any free web proxy, and friends using different ISPs can access it fine. Tech SUPPORT from the school (admittedly limited so far) reports no outages.

2. I cannot access it any better using a different browser (Firefox vs IE), different computer (home desktop vs laptop), different computer with a different OS that doesn't belong to me (Mac running Safari). All of these computers are using the same ISP, because I live in a VERY small town in Montana. I am running an ethernet cable to a dish which sends/receives wireless to a large (?) router in town. My work connection is WiFi through the same MEANS, and the boss' Mac is connected like my home computer.

3. The tech guy from this ISP reports he can access it fine from a computer running the same ISP but in a different town and using a different router, so he suggests perhaps the school is blocking the local router, though he says this is very unlikely.

4. As far as I can tell, I have no other connection issues.

I am running a year-old Vista machine with up to date Norton Internet Security and have tried clearing cache, etc., though how this could matter given the problems with other computers and presumably IP addresses, I don't know.

I have another call in to tech support with my ISP and should be able to TALK to a real tech rather than a student worker at the college tomorrow evening. Still, that's all one day closer to when school starts (Weds.), so getting SOME idea what's going on would really ease my mind.

I consider myself fairly computer savvy, and can usually fix any problems I have with a quick Google search or via troubleshooting with what I know. In 15 years online I've certainly never posted to a computer help FORUM, but this one just has me flummoxed. Any ideas?

Help VERY much appreciated.I should also note I tried using the site's IP address rather than the web URL, with no better success.

Solve : Weird Google Chrome Problem?

Answer» HI PEOPLE,

I have just observed a weird thing with Google Chrome. Don't know what it is. I usually click on the desktop icon which is named "google chrome" but after i CLOSED the program, i noticed the the icon was renamed to "popo" just like that.

Anyways here is what happened as well. I noticed the following: I don't know if it serves any importance. The computer has 4 user accounts on it and is running Windows Vista. When i right click on google chrome and other icons, clicked on Properties, and then the security tab, i saw all the USERS plus an unknown account named "UNKNOWN (hfdsj-fhuerfhjdsbfjdsb-cndsffbndbfghdsjdsbv-hjncdgj" with a red question mark next to it.
Any thoughts?

I installed Malwarebyte Anti-malware and conducted a scan that came back with no results. Then when i restarted, out of the blues, none of the user accounts were working except the Admin. Any thoughts here as well?

ThanksYou got something.............. nothing should rename your shortcuts without you saying so. My recommendation is, DELETE the account and run virus software.

Solve : browser address bar?

Answer»

in firefox
when you click on a link that opens a fixed size popup the address bar is locked
so you cannot change the address
i really need to know is there anyway to unlock it
because i need to mod the address to test something
i dont even see the purpose of locking the addressabout:config
Type DOM in the filter bar.
You can control what is and isn't allowed to be SET, changed or disabled by popups and so on. Set the value to True to disable the feature.
Very handy not just to STOP popups disabling the address bar, but to make every popup resizeable, have a SCROLL bar, and generally behave properly.
Don't set dom.disable_image_src_set to true, or you will have PROBLEMS with a lot of images, including avatars on forums.
Hope this helps.i like ff because you can control its behavour
with IE you are out of luck

Solve : Thinking of Switching ISPs?

Answer»

Hello,

I'm thinking of switching from my current provider, AOL to MSN for internet. Unfortunately, I don't know much about it and would like to know a bit more before deciding to MAKE the switch. Is it customizable? [like... wallpapers and such] and how is the email? Easy to access like AOL?

I asked a couple of other places and got ignored or told that 'I won't go into the features'... so I'm hoping someone here can be of some help. And no, before you ASK I'm not talking about the MSN messenger or the Windows Live Messenger [I have the latter and really like it].

Also, I do not have any OPTIONS for highspeed where I live, so it has to be dial up. =[

Thank you.

Well I haven't used dial up for like 10 years, and when I have I used NetZero, but I can tell one thing that your ISP doesn't determine your customization of wallpaper(if you mean desktop wallpaper), ETC.

Here is a comparison of their features:
http://get.msn.com/?prod=dialup
http://free.aol.com/thenewaol/plan_choice.adpSorry I haven't used dial up for a while either...time to convert I apologize...

I meant the wallpaper for the browser, not desktop as in the compters. I know you can change that.

I'll look over the links you provided and compare them. wallpaper for a browser?

AOL explorer is crap. other ISPs let you use a real Browser, like FF or IE. they don't have "wallpapers" because they aren't trying to be some cutesy yet functionally inoperative "desktop".Its what I'm used to.

However, moving on. What about the email? [which, is really the only important thing to me anyhow] Is it easy to access? Or do you have to login like you have to for Hotmail or Yahoo?I believe so, I think they include a small program for logging in. It can probably be set to do so automatically, Once you enter the DETAILS they give you the first time. And then, while your connected- you can use Internet explorer, Firefox, and any internet program. (games, for example).One more question...

Does it have a messenger built in? Or is that downloaded seperately?where do you live that does not have highspeed internet?New Mexico... [They have it... but... where I live the phone company hasn't gotten to us yet. >.>

There was one place close to us offering it... but its $100 a month and that's not counting the $500 they wanted in the equipment and setup fees and all of that. DSL Reports

Worth a looksee.Quote from: patio on June 06, 2009, 10:17:46 AM

My Message to them:
questions: 1. I am having a terrible time with my account not working right
again. I'm not sure if it's due to the hacking that keeps happening with mine
and my mom's computers. Also, have had a repairman working on the computer too
and he messed a bunch of things up too with the computer.
2. I can't get into alot of my accounts since he worked on it and I don't know
why. I'm not a computer tech, so I don't know what if he could have erased
something needed to get into my accounts.
3. When I get to the page to login, it does kind of let me in but then SHOWS a
plain dark blue to blackish screen and nothing else. It TAKES me to this address

Here is there reply

Solve : Cookies Question?

Answer»

I hope this is the correct place to ask more about cookies.
I'm trying to understand them better. Some things I do understand but some I don't.
Here is what I do understand is I thought they STORE information about us when we go to sites?
I also hear people SAY if we delete it, we still should be able to get back into the sites? Is that correct?
The reason I'm trying to understand this, is that the repairmen who work on my computer delete the cookies. Then I keep running into the problems of getting back into the sites. What do I do about this problem?
Thanks,
Amy You do not need to keep the cookies to return to the site(s). I keep cookies of sites I visit frequently. A safe setting is to accept first party cookies, block THIRD party cookies, and always accept session cookies.Ok, I don't even have the same type of settings that you are saying. About blocking 3rd party cookies. I don't have anything that gives an option to block them. The only things I have is, when I click on Tools, and then go to Options, and then to Security, For cookies this is all we have:
Accept Cookies From Sites
Accept Third-Party Cookies
Both have checks by them. Nothing that gives you the option to block anything.

Another problem I keep having is that whenever cookies get removed, yes I do have to log back in, but that also keeps causing my PASSWORD and all to get changed too. Any ideas on what WOULD cause that to happen? Sorry. Those settings are for IE (Internet Options - Privacy - Advanced)

also make sure to have atleast 1mb on your windows drive or you will

The OP stated that their internet explorer is gone from the start menu so not they cant' start it from there. Also you need at LEAST 15% of your HARD drive for windows to operate properly so please stop with this 1mb stuff.

Lyoncub,

Right click on the start button and then click on properties.
Then click the customize button.
Now you should see a section for "Show on start menu" there should be a box for internet make sure there is a check in that box.if you dont find it then use the search in the start menuUsually you can find the Internet Explorer at this DIRECTORY:
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer, if not just click on Start --> Run, write iexplore and press Enter.
If Internet Explorer starts, just browse you PC and search for it with word iexplore.

Cheers.

Solve : Queston about installing IE 8?

Presently I'm running IE 7, but wish to install IE 8.

Is it advisable to DL IE 8 over IE 7, or should I UNINSTALL IE 7?

Thanks You can't uninstall IE7.
You simply download IE8 and install it.
However, be aware, some people are having problems with IE8.
Switching to Firefox would your better option.I have IE8 on all of my systems and have never had a problem. But there's no reason it has to be IE OR Firefox - you can simply use both.Allan
I have IE8 installed on all my systems as well, and it works fine, but still there are number of people out there, which are having problems with IE.
That's why I'm cautious with forcing people to upgrade to IE8.Hey Broni, you're one of the guys on this forum I won't argue with - I greatly respect your posts. I'm just pointing out that the OP can easily upgrade to 8 and still have the option of using Firefox.Allan

Solve : Internet Explorer/Firefox not working?

Answer»

Hello everyone!

Good to be back here in the forum. I have to share an internet browser problem
of which it confused me a lot both my IE and FF is not detecting a connection at all
in fact I am pretty sure I had a GREAT signal because I can sign-in all of my messengers (e.g. skype, yahoo, msn live). even no window coming out on my proxy server for authentication.

I do also a virus and spyware scan but no bugs being detected. Perhaps I read some
of the thread but nothing similar to this problem.

Is anyone have a heart and share a solution or ideas. by the way, I am using Win Vista home basic 32 bit.

worried much,

rickrode hmm, strange problem. you could have some infected cookies or a virus your av hasn't found
if you have a FLASH drive you can transfer these to from the working computer to the problemed computer:
try running SUPERantispyware & Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Solve : Input font too small to read?

Answer»

I'm having a font issue and after much reading I haven't found a solution
yet. I'm using IE7 on Vista. The text I see on a webpage looks fine. The text
I see on menu bars/address bars/search bars, also looks fine. What I'm having
trouble with is anything that I have to "input" on a webpage. It's too small
to read and it appears to be a strange font. For example, when I log into an
account my USERNAME and password appears too small to read while I'm typing
it. It's very bothersome as you can't tell if you've typed something
correctly or not. They're are a couple of instances where it shows up that
way on a page somewhere but it "always" does it in any field in which I have
to "input" data.

My view: text size is set to "Medium" and changing this has no affect on
these fields. It only changes to text that appears on webpages. I did make
one discovery THOUGH. When I change the "encoding" from Unicode (UTF-8) to
Western European it seems to fix the problem (my input text shows up
normally) but it's only temporary. As soon as I reload, visit another page,
or open another window it reverts back to Unicode (UTF-8) and the problem
returns. I've TRIED using the "Auto Select" after switching but I get the
same result.

I am running IE7 on my other machine with WinXP and I don't have this
problem. View: text size is set to medium and the encoding is Unicode (UTF-8)
yet input data on that machine appears normal.

I have just noticed that My Norton bar at the top of this windown has a drop
down menu in which the text appears normal but 2 "buttons" beside that which
have this same small and strange looking font.

Is there an option to change the font that is used for "input" fields?

I just opened my Windows Mail and I noticed that some of the messages in my
inbox have this same small font in the headers. The "From", "To" and
"Subject" look normal but the text that follows them is the same small font
that I get in the "input" fields of IE7. It only appears on a few of the
emails though. The headers in the rest of the emails look normal.
Your computer is probably missing a font, that is why the font in the input box is to small. Mostly the font missing is Arial. I had the same problem, just download Arial at the website LISTED. Your going to need to save it to C:/windows/font. http://www.fontyukle.com/en/ara.php?ara=arial

Solve : Windows IE Read Mail Icon?

Answer»

I'm ASSUMING that Windows IE is linked with Windows Outlook Express. On the IE toobar there is an envelope icon (read mail). I got rid of Outlook Express in favour of Mozillas Thunderbird so this icon no longer functions.
Is there a way of MAKING it go to Thunderbird, or deleting it altogether, or even having another icon on there LINKING to Thunderbird?
Just a thought REALLY, but not a major problem.
ThanksCan you provide a screengrab? Also, what version of IE is thisThat why I dont like IE, this browser has nothing same with a quality product and its too dangerous how he still be the one of the best ... Really how?

Thank you.

Many people SEEM to find glee in attempting to rationalize the actions that they take. This is refreshing.I have rationalized my reasons.

But then again, so have you. And I respect this forum's decision not to allow that KIND of discussion.Can we make a sticky of this?

Just so other users KNOW how to act?You FLATTER me. If you really wish to, go ahead.Quote from: EchoLynx on September 09, 2009, 05:28:33 PM

You flatter me. If you really wish to, go ahead.

The effort isn't being MADE to flatter you.

It's to make the morons humble.My intention was not to offend anyone by mistake. Unfortunately, morons are morons for a reason, and I highly doubt their ability to glean humility from this thread. It would probably not be the first time they had been lead, either by example or instruction, not to take an offensive stance to other's point of view, and chances are another example wouldn't do a bit of difference.

Yet you remain free to sticky this if you so feel, and I remain flattered.Don't feel flattered. Morons are unable to be humbled so it probably won't become a sticky...

What browser/version?
Did you try different browser?

Firefox. It's the lates upgrade, 3.5 or whatever it is. I haven't tried a different browser. I'm not on my home pc right now, but when I get home I'll try that and see if the same thing happens.It appears to be working in Explorer. But in Firefox, it FROZE up my pc this morning. Then again, I just tried Firefox after I tried Explorer and it worked in Firefox as well. Hmmm.There's a chance the issue is on Yahoo's end...last month i couldn't use it RELIABLY for about 3 days.Try one more thing...

Close Firefox. Go Start>All Programs>Mozilla Firefox, CLICK on Mozilla Firefox (safe mode). Same thing?

Solve : I can no longer "preview" an URL?

Answer»

Hello,

In Internet Explorer, up until yesterday when I pointed to a hyperlink I could always "see" the URL of the hyperlink before clicking on it. For example, if I was reading the DRUDGEREPORT and pointed to a headline, I would be able to see that the link was pointing to the www.nytimes.com before I actually clicked on the link.

This feature seems to have been automatically disabled somehow. I have no IDEA how this happened, or how to fix it. I can't even figure out how to describe the issue in a way that would allow me to google a fix!

Could someone please help me?

Thanks

What version of Internet Explorer? Windows or Mac?

They are called "tooltips" by the way.

Have you altered your security settings? I just replied but it APPEARS to have disappeared.

I am running IE v. 8 on Windows (vista)

I havent altered any security settings (as far as I know)

I also noticed that SOMETIMES when I type in the search window on yahoo.com, the text appears backwards, i.e. if I type today it shows up as yadot. This isn't looking good. You might want to run full scans with your AV utility and either Malware Bytes or Super AntispywareQuote from: ADG on September 08, 2009, 02:17:47 PM

Yes. This begins to sound ominous.
Almost certainly malware is causing this. I had to clean a computer with this a few years ago and boy was it a pain.

I think a combination of HijackThis! and Spybot Search and Destroy finally KILLED it, but I don't remember for sure.
