Solve : My computer won't display certain webpages? |
Answer» You have 'Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U19' maybe try disabling and install 'Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U20' That wasn't it. How about in the plugins the fact that there's a ton of different versions of "application/x-java-applet" under Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U19?HM, maybe this will spark some new ideas: washingtonpost.com will work, but washingtonpost.com articles will not.I'd be surprised if it has ANYTHING to do with the problem, but I've got to ask. Did you have the same problem with Comcast?I didn't, but I don't think that's the problem because other computers on my LAN with Verizon don't have any problems. I'm starting to think it's a virus; one virus scanner I just used said my explorer.exe is infected, so I might try a repair install.According to me this type of problem is basically occurred due to the BROWSER issue. There might be some problem in your internet browser which doesn't allow it to load certain pages. To get rid over this type issue, for that you will NEED to reinstall your internet browser. I also had same problem and I also used this solution to resolve it. Like I said before, the pages didn't load across any browser, so that wasn't the problem. A virus scan fixed it, albeit temporarily. You're infected... Visit Our Virus and Malware section and follow the directions at the top of the page for posting your logs... |

Solve : FIREFOX - HIDDEN TEXT? |
Answer» When viewingmy local COUNCIL planning application data the Text is HIDDEN until I press Ctl + A to select all. How do I un-hide this text? Sometimes the text COLOUR is the same as (or similar to) the background colour. Maybe you should SEND an email to the site's webmaster.Give us a link to the page or a similar page on the same website. The text is visable via IE7 Browser so I don't think the problem it's related to text colour. |

Solve : MSN Messenger Open e-mail inbox? |
Answer» I have just changed from using Internet Explorer to Google Chrome. Google Chrome works much better on my system. Now when I USE MSN Messenger and click on OPEN e mail inbox it takes me to Windows Live sign in page. How can I change this to take me DIRECTLY to my inbox like it used to with Internet Explorer?Just login on hotmail, and click the tick box stating "remember my password" Just login on hotmail, and click the tick box stating "remember my password" What ? ? Where is the mention of Hotmail ? ? Please think before hitting the Post button.Quote from: Dwayne Austin on July 13, 2010, 06:36:55 PM I have just changed from using Internet Explorer to Google Chrome. Google Chrome works much better on my system. Now when I use MSN Messenger and click on open e mail inbox it takes me to Windows Live sign in page. How can I change this to take me directly to my inbox like it used to with Internet Explorer? You need to setup Chrome to be the default email appp... I don't use Chtrome but someone will be along shortly...I did try the first suggestion but there are two accounts so when it remembers one password and you are logged on the other account when you go to e mail you get the other persons. I went to where you set the DEFAULTS for Google Chrome and it said all defaults are being used for GC that can be. I know that there is a simple solution I just cant figure it out.Quote from: patio on July 13, 2010, 07:23:10 PM What ? ?patio? This is exactly what they are talking about. Quote from: Dwayne Austin on July 13, 2010, 06:36:55 PM I have just changed from using Internet Explorer to Google Chrome. Google Chrome works much better on my system. Now when I use MSN Messenger and click on open e mail inbox it takes me to Windows Live sign in page. How can I change this to take me directly to my inbox like it used to with Internet Explorer? The underlined part...is this in Chrome or IE? This is in ChromeWhen the Live login-in page opens, you need to click the "Remember me" and the "Remember my password" checkboxes to make sure you don't have to log in every time. The reason is because MSN Messenger and IE are both made by Microsoft and they are being awkward about you changing to someone else's product.I have tried this and it only works if I only have one account . but I have two and when I log on to one it brings up the others e mail when I click on so maybe there is no way to do it.Then what you need to do is repeat the procedure for both accounts and create seperate shortcuts/bookmarks to each... You should give them distinctive names so you lnow which is which...That doesn't work it just keeps taking me to the sign up page of the last one logged in no matter what bookmark I use.Quote What ? ?are two of you fighting or what. MSN, HOTMAIL, LIVE.COM, all is owned by one company is not as if he's taking it personal, he has made his point clear "and click the tick box stating "remember my password"". @ poster, dont you think the browser will be confused on which account to login after ticking remember my password on two different account? So my post was in actual fact correct @poster: You can't have both accounts take you directly to the email inbox, but... if you have 1 email account hooked up to the internet interface and ANOTHER to the "Windows Live Mail" (Found free on LIVE.com) You may solve your problems. Otherwise I don't think that there is any way to do that. |

Solve : Unable to use search function of IE? |
Answer» I am UNABLE to use the search function on my secondary computer(the one I use for searching). When I click on the search/magnifying glass, the search pane opens, but is hogged by Google and there is no search option, only a button to upgrade to IE8. The "customize" function does open the pane with different search service/search providers, and selections other than google can be highlighted, but they do not "take"-still just the google upgrade to IE 8. There is nothing google in the add/remove programs to remove. How can I GET google to release control of my search function? I am using windows XP Pro, IE 6 and Norton. Hi, have you updated your IE? What overthehill said is quite right. Just update it and see whether everything goes well.Parrot time.First I'd get rid of norton and use avg. I posted a poll on here to see if Norton was any good and nobody voted for it at all. All the votes went against it. In regards to the search can you look in "tools>internet options>advanced" then scroll until you find the little magnifying glass and see what it says there? Rgds, MMQuote from: Metal Messiah on June 09, 2010, 01:38:34 PM First I'd get rid of norton and use avg. I posted a poll on here to see if Norton was any good and nobody voted for it at all. All the votes went against it.First I'd get rid of IE6 I'd definitely upgrade from IE6, as there apparently there have been EXPLOITS to the code used for this fully patched browser version (IE6), and this was in 2010. http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/191192/what_you_need_to_know_about_the_ie_zeroday.html This is from PC world so, not sure how reliable this info is. Feel free anyone to comment on that. However, maybe that should be another in another thread lol. Remey - As I was saying in my last post though if you could check that and post here what option is ticked, but my reply would be try clicking on the other option. Shut down the browser and restart it and see what happens. Also, I mean to say welcome to CH Rgds, MM |

Solve : Open a pdf file within IE6, with Foxit instead of Acrobat? |
Answer» My IE6 opens pdf files in Adobe ACROBAT, which is slow to start. I would like instead to open them by default with Foxit Reader, but I don't find a way. I can only disable the Acrobat add-on in IE, and the result is that the pdf files don't open at all. Is there a solution? If you disable the IE addon you should just get the usual download or run dialog box. Do you see this? Why are you STILL using IE6? Why haven't you updated IE to version 7 or 8? Why are you still using IE6? Why haven't you updated IE to version 7 or 8? I totally agree, I use Firefox most of the time but I still keep IE up to date with the latest version, just in CASE I need it for some reason. |

Solve : Does Opera have their own version of Adblock or WOT (Web Of Trust)?? |
Answer» Firefox's new update has the plugin crashing all the time. I just installed Opera, so I need these type of Ad-ons. Thanks. I am not FAMILIAR with the Firefox comparison feature (even though i do use both firefox and opera). However Opera does have a user control ability on cookies which will go a long way to your control of external invasions of your computer. (not of the viral/spyware kind). You can even incorporate the ability on a case by case basis as to whether you want to PERMIT a site to generate a COOKIE. Generally speaking i am in favour of cookies but i do like the ability to chose whether to permit or not.The parameters of choice are quite broad from all-to none with choices in between.truenorthHave you updated your Firefox addons ? ? it asks automatically in the update process... What version of Firefox do you have? The latest version, 3.6.4, has a separate program called plugin-container which is designed to prevent problems like that.Where is this "separate program called plugin-container"? Quote from: soybean on June 29, 2010, 06:56:49 AM Where is this "separate program called plugin-container"? curious though, it seems to be running at 100% CPU usage (25% of my four CPUs- the 25% is entirely from the plugin container program)... the previous version of FF didn't do that. The latest version of Firefox At the moment is now 3.6.6.I'd like to know as well...I have version 3.6.6 installed. No problem here as far as CPU usage goes. Quote from: soybean on June 29, 2010, 07:59:32 AM I have version 3.6.6 installed. No problem here as far as CPU usage goes. yes, after I posted, I closed some of my many tabs. It was definitely flash or something that was consuming CPU, since it's down to 0 again.Quote from: patio on June 28, 2010, 04:35:57 PM Have you updated your Firefox addons ? ? it asks automatically in the update process... I disabled a few addons, so now it's working fine. When I log off, I get this error: plugin-container.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. Do you know what that's about?if you're still interested in Opera browser, try one of these adblock type programs: 1. http://www.fanboy.co.nz/adblock/opera/ 2. http://adsweep.org/ Firefox plugin container I think was the new FF thing they built into latest version as a plugin sandbox to prevent FAILING plugins from taking entire browser down with it so you lose your tabs and all. Thanks for your reply. I posted this subject because Firefox was crashing frequently after it's update. Firefox is working better since I disabled some of my add ons. Once in a while I get a plugin crash. I like Firefox because of Download Helper. Opera has a similar extension, but it's not as good as the Firefox add on. Do you know which browser is the fastest out of them all? Thanks.Quote from: bravofan71 on July 14, 2010, 05:30:30 AM Do you know which browser is the fastest out of them all? Thanks. Lynx.@bravofan1, maybe you want to create a new firefox profile and reinstall your addons and see if it would help. |

Solve : Can't click on links in email? |
Answer» For the past few years I've been using Firefox as my browser but recently added Google CHROME to see what it was like. I found Chrome basically took over my email in that any links I clicked on used their browser to direct me. I found I didn't like Chrome that much for a couple of different reasons and thought I got rid of it. Now when I open my email and there is a link to CLICK on,,,,it doesn't open the site I WANT to see. And the same thing applies to a few websites even now when I try to TYPE them in the address bar. Any help would be APPRECIATED. Thanks in advance. In Firefox: Tools - Options - Advanced Tab - General Tab - Put a tick in: Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser |

Solve : Can't connect to Facebook.? |
Answer» Hello all, if someone could help or point in the correct direction, it would be appreciated. My MOTHER informed me that her computer (Compaq) would not let her go to Facebook, but the rest of the internet was fine. I ran ANTIVIRUS, SPYWARE, and malware SOFTWARE, and that still did not fix it. I then got on my laptop (macbook), and the same problem is happening to my computer. This leads me to believe that it is obviously a problem with out router or WIFI. Thanks for any suggestions, either way! |

Solve : Cant import a Java for Opera? |
Answer» Have W7 and had definitely PLANNED to use Opera but the new Java se6 v 20 does not seem to work in my Opera 10.54 which means it doesnt work for my BankID either. There seems to be a java version for Opera but I can not import that one via the Java Installer, it does not work...any suggestions? Use of IE is NO option...ACCORDING to http://www.opera.com/support/kb/view/375/, you only need to install Java in Windows. You do not need to install a plugin because Opera uses the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) on your system directly instead of using the plug-in to run Java applets. yup, possible but it still doesnt work. Have installed latest version 20 in 32 bits and version 17 in 64 bits...At present, I only have Opera installed in Linux Ubuntu. So, not sure what else to advise you. Exactly what is the problem concerning your BankID? soybean...in XP/IE8 the Java Applet automatically started because it is used when entering my bankaccount and after that I can do business online with the bank...in W7/Opera that Applett doesnt start because they say Opera is using JRE and not a Java plugin...so that neceassary applet does not start up and so no me getting in into my bankID...and that means I HAVE to use IE while i am trying NOT to use MS applications.... strange thing: I see now that I have IE8 in both 32 and 64 bits in W7? that means I HAVE to use IE while i am trying NOT to use MS applications.... I am sure using a Microsoft application isn't going to kill you. Unless of course you have a crazy gunman standing behind you just daring you to us an MS application so he can PULL the trigger. Heck you are already using Windows 7 so I guess you would be screwed either way if the crazy gunman was there. |

Solve : Laptop will not connect to the internet? |
Answer» I have a T61 Lenovo Thinkpad which will not connect to the internet wirelessly. I have also tryed to plug it in via land line and it does nothing. When I attempt to use the wizard to create a new internet connection it does not do anything. Also it does not show wireless internet connections in the connect to link in the start menu. Any ideas of how to fix this/ what could be CAUSING this? When i referred to the "router" i was specifically referring to the one connected to the laptop. It could be an internal one or i could be an external. That one is unique to the laptop and could be the source of the problem.truenorth You can get a laptop with an "Internal Router"?I'm guessing he's confusing "router" with "wireless adapter"Yeah that is what I was thinking two but with the way things change now a days you never know what will be out next.Yes Allan is correct--wireless adapter. The o/p if he has access might be wise to try an external and SEE what transpires. As for the moment that is my principal area of concern given his inability to connect. truenorthThats what I thought you meant by router. I dont personally have an external one but I might be able to get access to one. |

Solve : Something is wrong with my browsers (video included)? |
Answer» HTTP://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iSZKrAz87s For some time now, I've experienced something annoying in every of my browsers. As you can see in video, it happens when I scroll up but not down (it happens on every website, not just Msn). First I thought it was my drivers, so I updated my video driver, but nothing changed. I've checked around the internet but I can't find anyone with similar problems. If it helps, I have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 330 video card. Can anyone help?could be a problem with the card itself. The card is most likly not loading fast enough. What type of computer are you using?Hmm, it seems to be fixed now. For some REASON, video driver wasn't fully updated even though I updated it from NVIDIA's hompage. I updated it again to a newer version and changed back to Windows Aero (changed to basic to see if it helped) and the problem seems to gone. Thats GOOD. |

Solve : IE8 Notification Bar Not Functioning? |
Answer» Installed `Miro" Internet TV, got Security Center Firewall notification, opted for ask me later. This I know, is there a point to be made? I'm all ears. Any elaboration is welcome. well, your problem is with Internet Explorer, is it not? since explorer.exe is not related to internet explorer I do not see how messing about with it's processes could solve the issue. You could probably do something with iexplore.exe, but my personal recommendation would be to run IE in safe mode (instructions here.Thaks BC Programmer, was wondering myself was Taskbar function or Windows Explorer would have to do with my question but not professing to know everything and open to suggestions for something I have not been able to figure out myself, I thought ending and restarting explorer.exe relatively BENIGN and was waiting for a response with the rational behind it from MM. If I were to run without add-ons(I usually right click on IE icon and select from small popup menu)would I then lose the notification/information bar for popups and ActiveX controls? Also, would reinstalling Windows Downloader rectify my problem? As I stated in my original post, I don't really miss this and always check the warnings in the download box anyway. Perhaps because I download a fair bit IE has thrown in the towel and is tired of reminding me. Sometimes a person may have to concede that the MACHINE knows more about me than I do about it; much like the first car I ever owned. Any further suggestions would be appreciated unless you feel it's time to close this one out. I took note in other posts in this forum that perhaps responding to older unanswered questions may not be looked UPON favorably.Hello I'm back with the problem solved, Should have thought before to check other user's settings for comparisom. Changed the following, -Unchecked "Enable Integrated Windows Authentication"- Internet Options>ADVANCED>Security(#10) -Disable "Automatic Prompting for File Downloads"- Internet Options>Security>Custom Levels>Downloads Still seems strange that disabling prompting actually enables it and not sure if the first change made a difference as I have never reset that on my own until now. If that were the case, IE wouldn't have tried to open the file to begin with.Even though you can see the file in preview mode in IE, to really open and work with the file you will need the full Visio installation.I should have added the full Visio software is about $250, but there are some freeware PROGRAMS. Some of the freeware programs are somewhat limited, but can do the basics depending on what you need. |

Solve : IE 7, Yahoo Messenger, and SVC Host Ballooning in Memory Usage? |
Answer» Quote from: Metal Messiah on June 11, 2010, 08:08:28 PM Hopefully that helps somewhatYou must be trying to run your post count up quickly. You seem to have a PATTERN of posting these little extra comments right after your initial reply. You have a time period - I believe it's TEN minutes - after posting during which you can modify a post. So, no need to make another post just to say some final words. Besides, these little follow-on posts add nothing meaningful. Are you two a tag team or something? I didn't know about the ten min edit. I'll do that in future. I also made a post on a thread from the 31st May and they got back to me. Do you have an answer for that? Rgds, MM Ps - I'm not trying to up my post count. I've just not had much of a chance to get on much of late so I'm just looking and trying to help the ones that had no resolution. Sorry for trying to assist people. If you both have something to say to me then you can both pm me instead of getting your own post counts higher.I think the edit window is an hour. And we can all thank our good friend Billrich for the fact that there is a time limit at all. (mostly, but also a good number of help seekers liked to "respond" to replies by changing their original post, which was confusing, to say the least). Quote from: Metal Messiah on June 12, 2010, 02:52:16 PM I've just not had much of a chance to get on much of late so I'm just looking and trying to help the ones that had no resolution. Sorry for trying to assist people. If you both have something to say to me then you can both pm me instead of getting your own post counts higher. You don't understand quite how the people seeking help work. First, at least some of the people you are trying to "help" have not been members here for months, even years. They will not receive any notification of your reply. At all. they will PROBABLY never know (they deleted their account for a reason, after all). The others, maybe they will receive notification, but after a year, it's highly likely that they found their solution elsewhere or have already figured it out. The only positive thing that could come out of it might be that future posters with similar issues can find a WAY to resolve their problem. However, that simply is not the case. First off, a good portion of your replies are really just interrogating for more information (sensible, because the OP often leaves out critical tidbits, but not sensible since the OP has certainly solved their issue)- asking for more info hardly helps future posters searching for help with their issues, regardless of how similar their situation may be to the original poster. Also, all you did was pretty much re-suggest advice the Original poster had already ignored (to re-check for malware via the malware experts on the virus forum) prudent, YES. but again, it's doubtful (but not impossible, I suppose) that the Original poster has not solved their problem either themselves or through other means. Secondly, you are rather frequently suggesting for people to "clean their registry" and "fix their associations" for issues that are almost wholly unrelated to either "registry issues" (of which no such thing exists) or file association problems (which are extremely easy to identify and fix). I'm not about to go into a 6th rant about "registry cleaners" (*censored*, do a forum search, you can probably find the previous ones I made (the one I made yesterday was pretty good I think) or how useless they are, but a summary would be this- registry cleaners fix "problems" with the registry, right? Too bad there is no such thing as a "registry problem" or a "dirty" registry. |

Solve : WHY ie is msoft choice? |
Answer» If you use it consider this>http://ashitaka-san.home.comcast.net/yayrant/ieharmful.htmlQuote Page URL Not Found!!Werid i tried it myself and got the same results? well there is this One more reason why firefox is better then IEAgree complete.y http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Index.dat Index.dat is not dangerous. Of course it can't be deleted by normal methods, it is in use by the system. Conspiracy theories are boring and so is Microsoft bashing. Quote c:\DOCUME~1\Your Name\Local Settings\History\History.ie5 [edit] This is a hidden folder inside your Internet Explorer history that tracks the urls you have visited. Absolute rubbish. It is the IE history, it does not track it just says which sites have been visited within a pre-set time limit that can be set by the user. Of course IE remembers where it has been. Clicking 'back' on the toolbar would not work, opening the history folder within IE to return to that really good site you found wouldn't work. I would be very surprised if Firefox, Opera etc didn't have something similar.may i suggest guest that you use a seach engine for the<<<<<<<< internet explorer>>> http://anutsaka-san.home.comcast.net/yayrant/ieharmful.html and read all the article......Quote It is proof enough that WINDOWS XP comes with an "auto-update" program so that its users can download and fix vulnerabilities as Microsoft gets around to them. If an autoupdate program wasn't included they would be moaning about that. It may seem it takes MS a long time to rectify a problem but have you considered the amount of work it takes? First talk to the person who found the hole, try to repeat it and find what, how and why it happens, then... Write the code to patch it. Make sure it doesn't break anything on any version of Windows with any/all or no service PACKS or updates and then test it on all the different versions of Windows in other languages . And on top of that ensure that it doesn't break any of the third party software. This takes a little time to acheive. That quote makes it SOUND as if they fix vulns in their tea breaks. Quote or didn't notice obvious security holes while they were programming them. They are only obvious with hind SIGHT. Are MS programmers some kind of super humans? Can the author please say what the next 'obvious' vulnerability is? Quote Internet Explorer Barrages You with Ads Web sites and ad-ware barrage you with ads not IE. If you hate pop-ups that much disable java and java script in the internet zone. No more pop-ups. Easy. Plus Java shouldn't be allowed for any site to run it's crap anyway. Same with ActiveX, it should be disabled in the internet and restricted zones. The default security settings for IE are the biggest problem and my pet hate with IE. If it came with the security zones battened down to begin with it would be much safer. The average user hooks up their brand new computer to the inet and doesn't have a clue at what is out there. And it isn't their fault. I have picked only the more blatent absurdities but if IE wasn't so widely used and Firefox (for example) had the largest share of the browser market then it would be FF that had been studied and exploited in the way that IE has. As FF continues to get more users more holes will be found. That article was written by someone who, for some unexplained reason, hates MS. It's easy to knock something down but to be constructive, explain the problems, let people know how to secure IE would make it a much more important piece of writing.Ok thanks for your views on the subject.....i still use ie....and its up to the user to decide what is what....after all said and done....maybe other software programs are spying on users anyway....i posted this thread.....to see if people jump out of the frying pan into the fire...Quote Ok thanks for your views on the subject..... No problems LOL. I was in a bad mood last night and couldn't believe that the article was being presented as fact rather than an opinion. Quote i still use ie....and its up to the user to decide what is what.... So do I and I can't see me changine to any other browser. I agree totally, everybody has to make their own choices. Quote after all said and done....maybe other software programs are spying on users anyway.... If MS were really spying on us all the database must be rather large by now. LOL Quote i posted this thread.....to see if people jump out of the frying pan into the fire... Not quite sure what you mean by that. To confirm what I was saying about securing the internet zones MS has confirmed the existance of a hole that has yet to be patched. The workaround is to set the internet zones to high. http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1833697,00.asp Disabling ActiveX downloads, active scripting, java script and java within the inet and restricted sites zones makes IE much more safer and the usability does not degrade by a significant amount. A few websites are broken but if they are to be trusted add them to the trusted sites zone. www(dot)coolwebsearch(dot)com holds no terrors for me Been there and didn't get infected. Quote www(dot)coolwebsearch(dot)com holds no terrors for me Smiley Been there and didn't get infected. Smiley Firefox is easy to configure for NOVICES. You know how to configure IE, but many a novice would get lost in the jungle of configuration settings that really do not look all too friendly. |

Solve : Explorer fault has paralyzed my system? |
Answer» I'm a total COMPUTER novice, so please excuse my ignorance. A couple of days ago when I powered on my computer it told me I needed to enter the number contained on my Windows 98 booklet. I've had this computer for 5 years so I thought this was weird, but I entered the number and was able to use the computer. The next day when I TURNED it on I got an "Explorer" error box. My only choice was to click "CLOSE" but when I did this nothing happened. None of my programs started, none of my icons came up, I couldn't even see the mouse cursor. I tried rebooting but got the same Explorer error. I even started in safe mode and the same error came up. So basically, I can't access anything on my computer. Can anyone help or has my computer had it? Here are the details for the error message: |
