Solve : Internet connection keeps cutting off!!!!?

Answer»

Friend of mine has hookd up to the internet. If he turns of his computer and then turns it on a day later the internet conenction is gone.

As of today i dont know whether he is using dial up or broadband.

So what could be the reasons for his problem?

Virus?
ISP problems?
Drivers?
Default connection not set up?

Any more reasons?

As i say i have little details of what setup he is actually using. Im just trying to get an idea of POSSIBLE causes.

Thanks GUYS! If it's dialup, then a connection has to be established each time the computer is turned on.

If it's broadband, while the computer is on try turning the modem off, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on. Sometimes that actually works

You ask possible reasons:

Virus? It never hurts to run a scan; just make sure the signatures are up to date.

ISP problems? Call them! If the sun is in the seventh house and the Moon is aligned with Mars, they may actually help you!

Drivers? Unlikely since a connection can be made. If you have them install them.

Default connection not set up? Check and see.

Good luck. Thanks for the help sidewinder!

ANYONE else got any suggestions? Yes... Try Sidewinder's advice, and see what happens... If it works, problem solved... If it doesn't, then come back for suggestions, ok?

Solve : AutoComplete... Weird...?

Answer»

Hey everyone... I disabled AutoComplete in the Internet Options, but yet, when I GO to type something into a form, it gives me previously used searches, ETC. I've also tried clearing the autocomplete forms, but it still fills them.... What's up?

[glb]FLAME[/glb]That's not really autocomplete working there. It is more of a history file. (MS trying to be helpful again). And that can be disabled how?

[glb]Flame[/glb]It can't that I am aware of, but then again I am not an IE expert. One of the things that I do, besides clearing history, is when the things show up as you are typing I use the arrow keys to highlight the one I don't want and hit the delete key. This works in things like google search boxes, etc.Hey... You know... I think that WORKED! lol Thanks!

Solve : Locking Down IE6?

Answer»

We use a PROXY so some of our USERS only have limited access to certain sites. One of the users has figured out you can go in there and just take out the proxy settings and go anywhere on the internet. Is there anyway to lock this down so the user can't change their proxy setting that we have in there for them? Thanks! If you install Spybot S&D, you can enable an option that prevents users from accessing Tools -> Internet Options.

However, they can still simply access the Internet Options by going to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.

You may also wish to look into a program such as The Proxomitron.Do you have firewall??? Because if you do you should be able to BLOCK all traffic on port 80 and 8080 (common internet ports) that doesn't come from the proxy server. There for if a user CHANGES the proxy settings they will not be able to GET out to the internet.

Or try windows group polices to lock users out of the config pages of IE and also other windows settings. Depending on how your network is set up this can be very easy to implement.

This site may be of some help.

Solve : virtual memory overloads and freezes computer?

Answer»

Okay...I recently switched AOL w/anti-virius to adelphia w/anti-virus. After a while my computer would start to freeze up and I THOUGHT I had a virus. I didn't. When I look at my task MANAGER Iexplorer is at 121,000 and increasing until my computer freezes from the virtual memory OVERLOAD. My problem just got worse. I can't access the internet at all. It opens the file but as the memory USE increases no window opens. Iexplorer still overloads the virtual memory and freezes my computer. During the first two days of the problem I could access the internet and if the numbers got too high I could minimize the window and they would drop again but not anymore (I don't even have a window!). Help please!Try using a different broswer for a while and see if that helps.Have you fully uninstalled the AOL virus scanner?

Solve : my Links Don't Work.?

Answer»

nope still the same...Just to be sure
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/
do a free scan.
What Operating System?
What Antivirus & Antispyware?
What firewall?windows xp, sygate firewall, AVG antivirus and Ad-ware SE.

okay see that hyperlink u gave me, that 'scan your pc' link in the pandasoftware page doesn't work for me.Have you done a full scan with AVG?I've done it after I've encountered the problem. Umm.. well i think there were a few entrenched viruses.. it's form those you think..?It's better to start with a level playing FIELD, so did you remove the viruses? There were around 1 or 2 that ACG couldn't remove.Re-boot & start in 'safe MODE with networking' by hitting F8 at bootup.
Then scan & clean your computer. Then try and access hotmail while still in safe mode.okay i'll try that sometime.. either that or reformat hey.

So you don't think it's a javascript problem? Thanks for ur incredible patience HEHEHE A reformat will fix it for sure
Don't give up though, get to the bottom of it then re-format if you feel the need later. If the virus was in a restore, AV software will not remove it. If you use system restore you will restore the virus as well. Turn off system restore and shut down. Reboot and run the AV again. The virus should be gone. If you still have a problem, give this a try. http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Solve : Pictures appear blurry on web pages...help!?

Answer»

I have no clue what to do. Everytime I browse web pages, all of the pictures appear blurry/splotchy. This has only happened recently, and I don't think I have made any CHANGES on my computer.Does you desktop look normal?Yes, everything on my desktop LOOKS normal. When I view pictures stored on my computer they look normal; however, if I upload them to a webpage they appear blurry along with any other pictures online.ok in the start/run box type this>>>rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

chose the repair option.......also what is your refresh rate set at........now click the monitor tab>>refresh rate is?Check IE>Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>
Smart Image Dithering

Do you have MSN Accelerator?:(I am also having the same problem and would really like some help. I have MSN... MSN Accelerator. I have Windows XP. My pictures from my digital camera are fine, but pictures on the interenet are blurry. I also didn't make any changes to my computer. I tried everything that was suggested , but nothing happened. My refresh rate is 75 hertz. Please help! Thnks!Turn your MSN Acceleration down to 'none'.Well, I tried all of that and nothing seemed to help. I do not have MSN Accelerator. In Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>Smart Image Dithering..it was checked. I don't know if it is supposed to be or not, but I unchecked it and nothing happened.Jen, have you installed any plugin/helper type things to your browser?
What little I've seen of MSN Accelerator, it seems to increse browsing speed by sacrificing image quality.
That, to me, sounds exactly like your problem.
Could you have installed a similar thing, maybe without realising it?
What browser do you have?
Re-tick dithering.Well, the only thing I can think of is PeoplePC accelerator; however, I disabled it and nothing changed. The only other thing that I have is Google Toolbar, which doesn't really do much. Hmm, I guess I will look around and TRY to find anything new on my browser.I have Internet Explorer 6.Try disableing PeoplePC, then empty your browser cache, then check the net pictures again.
You may have been viewing pictures from your cache. What is a browser cache?Oh, never mind, that was a stupid question. I figured it out. THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Everything is back to normal again. Thanks for all your help; I really appreciate it.

Solve : temporary internet files??

Answer»

hi there. i have a quick question about the temporary internet files that are found by first going to i.e. internet options, then selecting 'settings' for temp. internet files (on general tab), and finally view files. (i'm trying to be as specific as possible so you'll know EXACTLY what i'm asking about.)

ANYWAY, i've noticed that all websites i've visited, even ones i've deleted from i.e.'s history view, are stored in that folder.

my question is: are the only sites stored in there the ones that i've CLICKED ON (accessed knowingly).. or are sites from ads (NOT clicked on / directly accessed) stored as well? for example, if i went to abc.com and an ad for xyz.com was on that site BUT I DIDN'T CLICK ON it, would xyz.com appear in the aforementioned temp int. files folder?

hopefully someone can help. THANKS a million in advance.

p.s. i understand that i can clean that area up with disk cleanup, but the reason i'm asking is to find out if certain websites were viewed intentionally or not by someone else.only websites.......delete history delelte files.....use disk clean up

Quote

only websites.......delete history delelte files.....use disk clean up

thank you for responding. i totally understand about disk cleanup.. but here's the thing. i'm trying to figure out if someone was viewing certain websites intentionally or not. which is why i was wondering if websites from ads not directly accessed / clicked on would be in there. i hope i'm making a bit more sense, haha.those flsah banners ads....or normal ads are part of the html web script.....if you wish to clean your ie out....third-party SOFTWARE like webwasher etc......will clean it all up...Take a note of some of the sites, then clear the cache and go BACK & visit the sites.
Then check if there are any 'extras' in there if you know what I mean.

Solve : Network Troubles?

Answer»

We have been running a home wireless network at my house for a while, and we have recently changed the wireless ROUTER to a linksys wireless-b router. After adding the router, neither of the computers that uses the wireless capabilities can access the internet. The CONNECTION will be shown as connected, but we can not access any web pages. Anyone has a clue as to what the problem is and how to fix it?

Other SPECS:

All computers running XP/XP pro
2 Using AMD athlon (only one works)
1 Using Intel centrinocheck firewall settings......Configure the new Router as the previous Router was configured.

It may need the COMPUTER name provided by the ISP to allow it to connect to the Internet. However, this is ISP dependant. No dice . Anything else you can think of?

A piece of info that might help, is when I click repair on the wireless computer, it says "Can not clear the ARP cache" on one machine, but still shows it as connected. The other computer does not have an error message and just acts like it is connected. For the machine that has the ARP cache error, TRY typing this at a command prompt:

netsh interface ip delete arpcache

you could also try "arp -d" at the command prompt.
If this doesn't work, reboot.

Solve : Refresh GRRR!?

Answer»

I knew it
I thought I'd do the right thing & update Windows, now whenever I'm logged in here & HIT REFRESH I get a warning telling me I can't refresh without resending the information again... retry or cancel.
Right now I'm blaming windows update, does ANYONE know where to change the setting back? That's weird, it just started working again by itself?
Windows, you've gotta love it. *shrug*That just happens sometimes, it says page has expired and shows this.

Stu, that's the sign it was putting up but it said nothing about the page being expired. It only happened when I tried to refresh while logged in the forum.
It fixed itself & I swear I never TOUCHED it.
I have a few more computers to update so I'll see if it happens to them too.Internet Explorer users...Update didn't cause it because it just happened with an unpatched machine.
Internet Explorer users... RULE!Yes, the users may (because they are in the majority) but the browser sure does not. this was something ie was supposed to be like

Solve : How do I "unhide" item in Favorites?

Answer»

I've hidden some items in my Favorites folder, and would like to get them back (make them visible again).

Here's how I hid them:

  • Clicked on Favorites

  • Right-clicked on a folder or Site Name

  • Selected Properties

  • Clicked on General tab

  • Placed a check in the "Hidden" checkbox, near where it says Attributes

  • Clicked Okay

Okay, so now how do I find the hidden Favorites item and make them visible again?

Thanks in advance for your help....
Earl/ my computer /tools ///folder options/view.....scroll down and tick the box SHOW hidden files/folders
Thanks for the RESPONSE but it didn't work, that box was already checked when I got there and hidden Favorites are still hidden...

Any other suggestions?

Thanks.
EarlIt sounds like you are trying to do this from your favorites list?
You NEED to GO to your favorites directory, like
C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Favorites
In there you will find the hidden file & then you can right click & set the attributes from there.
Your favorite will come back on your list but it will be at the BOTTOM of the list. Thanks Fred, your advice was right on point!

okay when you start a download by CLICKING on the link and NOT RIGHT clicking "save target as" there is a screen that shows up. it tells you some info about the file then along the BOTTOM of the screen there are 3 buttons "save" "open" and "cancel". now in the bottom left of this screen there is a check box that says somthing along the lines of "ALWAYS ask which directory to save files too" . i accidentaly unchecked the check box so now the screen never shows up and files are always saved to this really hard to find folder. if you know of a way that i can fix it so that it has the box checked and the screen shows up please tell me.

All ideas even theories are wanted PLEASE HELP.Follow these steps:

1. Start

Solve : Downloads won't finish?

Answer»

I have been having trouble downloading files through internet EXPLORER. The download starts FINE, but once it gets to 2 or 3 percent it suddenly is finished. I've tried pretty much everything I can THINK of, including clearing the TEMP internet files, the web cache, and the history (not that those have much to do with d/ling files, but I had no idea what to do) and of course it still doesn't work. Any help is appreciated....Please only post the same question once...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Try disabling your firewall and download files. If this works, get a new firewall that won't block downloads. If this doesn't work, go to Tools -> Internet Options... -> Click the Advanced Tab and then press RESTORE Defaults.

Well.... Guess what... Had a cut out today.. I turned on the computer, and it couldn't connect... I should have given it more time though... (I only gave it 1 minute before RESTARTING, etc.) ... I'm going to call Verizon... I'll post results...

[glb]Flame[/glb]the events log should tell you......have you type net in the cmd prompt.......my guess its the dsl modem....did you check.....the cables/main box/ etc.....do you shutdown the pc.......or do you hibenate it?Hi Merlin. The best I ever did in the command prompt was check my PING... Also, the modem only seems to cut out every once in a while (randomly). I also shut down my computer, and never hiberante it... The wires, etc all check out, however, I did make an interesting discovery yesterday... I checked the DSL wire, which plugs into my surge protector... I disconnected teh modem to make sure that there was no dust, etc. inside... When I pulled out the wire, that little clip at the end of the wire (which holds it in place) broke right off... So now I have electrical tape holding it down. lol I'll be getting another one soon... Maybe that was the problem? Maybe the wire was not held in place? I have no clue...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Be brave:) flame........type the command net......in the cmd prompt.......you will learn more;) for a net connection to die......i would suspect bandwidth....run a test if you can disconnect all usb devices......that are not in use.....I typed command net in the command prompt, but nothing... That IS the problem. The tab locks it in tight to the contacts. Go to the Dollar Store right now and get a new RJ-11 (telephone) cable.
That's just the thing... I need a special cable... I'm just going to call Verizon... I think I have it under control now though... I hope... The funny thing is... That cable was UNDISTURBED for about a year... I started having problems (vut-outs), which I why I removed it... So how did the cable break int he first place, I wish I knew. lol I'll call Verizon then... Thanks everyone for all your suggestions, as all replies are greatly appreciated!

... I need a special cable...

You're joking? I've got a DSL modem with all the cables, that someone gave to me. The cable from the modem to the phone wall jack LOOKS like a standard phone cable to me (other than the tags attached to it that tell you where to plug it in).
I have never seen a special cable for a DSL Modem, it is just a plain OLD ordinary phone cable. What are those Verizon people up to now (assuming they still employ actual people of course)?Flame...... "That's just the thing... I need a special cable... " Could you describe this cable for us ? How many conductors does it have ? What do the end connectors look like? .....doesn,t it plug into the phone jack in the wall , like a normal telephone ...... or is this cable by any chance a filter ? ( which shouldn,t be there anyway )

let us know

dl65 It can plug into the wall, and very could be a telephone line, but unlike telephone lines, my line is round, and not flat... Also, I will have to check the conductors to see... Hence the reason that I want to just get a free one from Verizon.

[glb]Flame[/glb]Well now. Free is always good Well, if I can save a buck, then that's always good! Although, I wouldn't mind paying either... It wouldn't be THAT expensive....

IE uses a mini windows media player to play these videos within the BROWSER. When I RIGHT click on the video the only options are:

Stop
Volume
Zoom

None of these ALLOW for adjustment of brightness.

Solve : Access Outlook Express Away from Home?

Answer»

Howdy. Can anyone help me with: How can I access my OE6 (particularly my incoming emails) from another person's system if I am away from home. Is this even possible?

Please keep any any ADVISE very simple as I'm STILL a beginner in some areas.

Thanks much for any help and have a good one!! Simply create a new account on another machine and remove it when you leave.I don't know how to do this. Thanks much. Remember--BEGINNER HERE.You said in some areas.

Creating a new account is basic KNOWLEDGE. I will ATTEMPT to guide you through Outlook Express 2003 as Outlook Express would be the most likely PROGRAM you come across whilst not using your own computer.

Most E-mail clients have an account wizard. The information you need to fill out can be obtained from your E-mail client.

The steps may very per E-mail client used. Your E-mail will most likely be able to provide you with exact steps for the E-mail/news reader client you are operating.

Outlook Express 2003:

1. Open Outlook Express 2003
2. Go to the tools menu
3. Click on E-mail accounts
4. Select Add a new E-mail client and click next.
5. Select the correct protocol.
-- Often POP3
6. Fill out your user name, password and other relevant information.
7. Go to the Outgoing Server tab. Fill out your SMTP adress.
--This adress can be obtained from the E-mail provider you are using.
8. Go to the Advanced tab. This is additional, but may be required to be configured by your E-mail provider.

gerette......I would check with your ISP .....they probably offer web mail...... Then all you do is use any pc or laptop anywhere in the world .........go to your ISP's website and sign into webmail.....you will then have access to any mail which is in your mailbox.......and hasnt been delivered yet ...... You can open it reply to it ....etc...and a copy is left on your mail server untill your return to your own pc and receive it ..........I use this feature all the time when travelling and its great ..

Cheers

dl65 put in www.mail2web.com - type in your username and password [emailprotected] or whatever. I access outlook express all across the country this way.

Friend of mine has hooked up to the internet. If he turns off his computer and then turns it on a day later the internet conenction is gone.

He is using broadband.

What COULD be the causes/solutions

THANKS for the help Try unplugging the modem for about 15-30 seconds. The reconnect, and restore POWER to the computer.

[glb]Flame[/glb]Thanks Flame. But will he need to do this EVERYTIME he wants to connect to the net? That depends... Have him do it just once... That might fix the problem for good... Although, if his modem is damaged, then maybe... If you WANT to know what I do, then listen up... Once a month, a run a scheduled power outage... (I cut-off all electricity all of my components).... I later restore power after about 5-10 minutes... Works for me!

Solve : IE has encountered a problem...?

Answer»

Will be in the middle of something and "IE has encountered a problem and needs to shut down" pops up. It has given reasons ranging from a device manger to IE itself. I have run virus scans and found NOTHING. After GETTING really irritated, I downloaded Firefox and it has started doing the same thing. I am running Windows XP Home and have all the updates. I did not think I would have the same problem with Firefox. You said that you scanned for viruses, but what about Spyware?

[glb]Flame[/glb]I have scanned for everything. If it finds spyware I delete it. The problem still exists. How long has this been happening? Did you make any changes to your system at all before this happened?

[glb]Flame[/glb]It started about a week AGO. No, I have not made any changes to my system. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=293623Thanks. Went to the site and found that it was a program loaded on my PC (MORPHEUS). I took it off and cleaned my system and it now seems to be fixed.I'll let you know if I encounter it again.

Do not bother with Peer 2 Peer programs as the MAJORITY of them seem to contain spyware.

Solve : I can't see url's when I hover??

Answer»
Hi,

I recently re-installed xp Home additon. All was going fine until I noticed that when I hover over a link, you CAN NOT see the url at the foot of the page. Therefore I don't know where I'm going, and for obvious reasons want to avoid certain sites.
As I can't see the url's, it means I am not able to see the download progress as well.
My tools/internet options/advanced settings are the same as all other SYSTEMS I have that work.
Is it this, or maybe an ACTIVEX control.
Cheers
Duncan

Solve : How do I control the size of new windows in IE?

Answer»

How can I change the size a window opens up into when I click on a link in a webpage? I use XP HOME SP-2.
It seems somehow it changes periodically and I don't know why. Right now they are opening almost full screen and I would like them to open to about 1/4 screen size. I use to be ABLE to change it by opening one and then going to the CORNER of the screen and SHRINKING it to the size I wanted, close the window, then in the future it any link would open in that size window. That no longer works. Any idea how I can change it?
Thanks

Solve : forwarded addresses?

Answer»

what`s the simplest way to delete forwarded addresses?Be specific.... Do you WANT to stop receiving chain MAIL? Delete other addresses when sending an E-Mail? More information please...

[glb]Flame[/glb]
I just want not to be sending other people`s addresses when sending forwarded e-mail. thanks if you have an answer.I usually just do a COPY&Paste of the text to a new email. That way, no PREVIOUS e-addresses get forwarded.

My 2½¢

thanks for that. Excellent
Another way I found to not send peoples addresses in `Forward` is to click down arrow NEXT to `Forward` and delete addresses etc.

Solve : Can't link from certain websites-HELP!?

Answer»

When I click on any link from various websites, and this does not occur on all websites, my system will go into a wait mode for about 30 seconds like it's searching, all the time frozen on the page that I clicked the link from. Then it will switch to a blank page, with the title of the page I tried to link to LISTED on the top header and stay there for about 30 seconds. Then it will return to the original page I started from as if nothing happened. Has ANYBODY had a similiar experience and if so what do I do? Please help.
Thank you,
BGPut up one of the offending websites & I'll try it.

I hate it when they post a question & then disappear.
Time to start a black list of people not to answer. YES, there are indeed a lot of people who NEVER answer back.

That is why, unless you know a definite solution, you should never post a message longer than a few lines. If they do not come back, it is simply wasted time.

We need more regulars too.Good thinking Raptor, answer every first question with
'What OS is this'. I vote for. Sorry if you all thought I wasn't here any longer but I wasn't sure how to post a reply. I did everything you all have suggested prior to even posting this problem....so what else can I do at this point? I have no virus, I use Ad-Aware multiple times daily. The websites which are causing problems are sites I have used for some time with, up to now, no problems. What now? Sorry about the delay in my reply to you all.

Solve : Suddenly slow internet connection, what else to do??

Answer»

Please I need some help. I can't think of what else to try. So here is the situation. A couple days ago my PC internet connection BECAME really slow for no apparent reason. But my laptop connection is fine. Both are XP MACHINES, fairly new, going through the same router. Here is what I have tried:

Unplugging router and modem
Restarting, powering down computer
Putting a PCI LAN card in (was using built in motherboard connection)
Updating drivers for the PCI LAN card
Trying different LAN cord
Uninstalling antivirus and antispyware programs
Reinstalling antivirus and antispyware programs
Running full system antivirus scan
Running Ad Aware SE and removing what it found
Running broadband speed test. On laptop it was 1.3 MBps, but only 470 KBps on the PC.

Here are the log files I made

http://www.geocities.com/sim_susan_halliwell/hijackthis.log
http://www.geocities.com/sim_susan_halliwell/startuplist.txt

I can't think of what else to do. Please help!

Susan.have you checked there are no power outrages with your isp??have you scanned for bugs on all your PCS?Have you tried to repair your connection?

Follow these steps to do:

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Network connections
5. [Name of network connection]
6. Right click on [Name of network connection]
7. Click repair
-- Or recover. Translation can be incorrect.

In your second HijackthisLog (Startup log)

the C:\Windows\system32\j?vaw.exe does not seem to belong there. According to the research I have done, it seems to be EITHER spyware or a virus.

1. Does your spywarescanner nor Virus scanner not detect 2. it? What scanners are you using?
WELL, I am not sure what you mean by power outages on my ISP so I'd say I haven't checked that. I haven't checked for bugs either, though my laptop runs just fine, only my PC is giving me grief. I tried to repair my connection and it didn't help. I looked up that j?vaw.exe thing and I believe I got rid of it. It wasn't detected in my virus or ad-aware SE scan. I use Symantec and Ad Aware SE 1.06r1.

Here is the newest log:

Comcast looks like it may be a problem.Ok, so I check this morning and it is still slow. I go to work and come home, and suddenly it is working fine again. Didn't do anything and it is just working again. I'm glad it is working and all, but I would have liked to know what the heck was wrong in the first place. I will remove that Comcast Support thing. Well, thanks everyone for the advice. TTFN

Well the wireless adapter to my computer is via a PCI slot. However my dsl modem is a USB connection. My router is placed near the wall. However i am at the end of my street so it wouldnt be possilbe for someone at the side it is palced to interfeare with it. My nabours on the left however dont even have a pc so i doubt that is confliscting. One idea i did think could be occuring was that out wireless fones or mobile phones could be interupting the signals. But i placed both home and mobile phones next to the router and called them, i did this 3 times but nothing occured. I am using windows firewall but i dont think that is conflicting. When i set up the wireless through AOL i disconnect the DSL modem whilst having wireless on and AOL detects it as just another "High-Speed" connection.. I do however have sky didgital, (not sure if you will know what that means if you are American) but merlin you might if you are from London as it says under your picture. But im not sure if this is conflicting. I have tried messing around with the micro-filters but to no sucess.. Please reply all help is VERY appreccaited!!try moving it from the wall......try netstat.< the net cmd>.....or ping in the cmd prompt.....like ping www.bbc.co.uk it should display packets sent packets losed >do a speedtest....www.adslguide.org.....it maybe spyware that also cause it.
run a scan >> i doubt if sky would interfere with it.....also check your other conections///router .......

Solve : Can't open internet explorer-possible virus??

Answer»

To make a long story short, a COUPLE of days ago my computer started cutting off randomly for no reason. Last night my virus scan detected coolwebsearch on the comp. then a program called PSGuard showed up on my computer and it will not let me unistall it. Along with this my computer said it was low on virtual memory. Since all of this happened, it will not allow me to get on to internet explorer, and my computer keeps crashing and freezing. Please help!!Follow these steps:

1. Boot into safe mode
-- To boot into safe mode, PRESS F8 before Windows loads and select safe mode Do not select safe mode with network support
2. Scan for VIRUSES, Trojan Horses and Spyware.
-- Use the following scanners/applications

I. AVG free
II. Spybot S&D
III. Microsoft Giant Anti-spyware
IV: Zonealarm Free

3. Properly configure and apply these applications.

Answer these questions:

1. What are your system temperatures?
2. Have you recently made changes to your hardware?
I already have both AVG and Microsoft anti-spyware on my computer.(should I reinstall?) How do I check system temperatures?(sorry, I am a novice)... I have not made any changes to my hardware knowingly.Have you done as I have advised you to?

System temperatures can be viewed through the BIOS.

For information on how to use and/or access the BIOS refer to this article.Raptor,
-Could you please explain how to access the BIO? I followed your directions and ran a scan. The following was detected on Microsoft anti-spyware:
1) windupdates browser plug-in
2) Possible browser hijack browser modifier
3) cool web search (10 signatures)
4) cool web search. searchx spyware
5) krepper (trojan downloader)

-Upon completion of this scan they were cleaned and removed.

After that I ran a scan on AVG and it detected a Trojan Horse, but would not allow me to "move to chest" due to the following:

"virus chest server is not running. RPC communication failed."dankwsc.......In addition to what Raptor has already suggested ...( which I HOPE you have listened to ) you should probably ...... D/l ....... hijackthis ......

Solve : Shows~ Done with errors on page?? Help Please?

Answer»

I did do a search first using the words......

download page error

I pulled up four things and they don't seemed to be for what I'm talking about.

Below is a post I also put on the message board under
" Other " But thought I would also put it here since it's
when I'm on my Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Please read my post below.

Hello,
I use the web site iwon.com for all my mail postings for Genealogy. (Family Tree searching )
I have used this address for 5 years and today I cleaned out all my cookies because I had so many.
And when I went to iwon.com the page looked a little different and had no place for me to log in at.
Then I noticed as I tried it again that at the very bottom of/below the page where like while I'm on this page posting shows a blue E for Explorer I guess.
But when I go to iwon.com it show a yellow triangle there and when I put my mouse over it...It shows this...

DONE,but with errors on page

I am so upset and I don't know what to do
Like I said above this web site holds and has all my posting about surnames for doing my family tree search.
If you have questions please ask....I'm so lost and I tried to explain what the page is doing the best way I know how.
I can GET to other places that need passwords.
Thank You for reading.

TheresaAre you going to this site from a bookmarked favourite, if so, what it the full address of your bookmark?Hello,
First let me say Thank You for a reply.
I kept checking the web site and it still was showing some ERROS on page and then for some odd reason later I went back and HIT the refresh but and then the page came on correct showing everything and where to log on etc. I'm try that again if it ever happens again.
Maybe something else was going on with the site I don't know, but it worked.

Thank You,

TheresaIn the same menu where you have previously removed cookies, do the following:

  • Delete [temporary] files
  • Delete History

This will most likely allow you to CORRECTLY view the webpage as you have always done.

Solve : White square with red X - no pics?

Answer»

Hi all. Hope someone can HELP. I am having a PROBLEM displaying "some" pictures on websites. Instead of the image displaying, all I GET is a white box with a red X in the middle in place of the picture. Like I said, some pictures do display so I'm not sure what the difference is and why some won't show up.

Any help would be APPRECIATED. Thanks...

--EllenIs this happening on all the web sites you are visiting or just a particular one? Sometimes if a site is really busy or their network connection is slow or congested than it may time out while loading the pictures. You can always try and right-click where the picture should be and select "show picture". Most of the time this will END up displaying the picture.http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q283807Thanks for the replies. It is definately happening on all websites, but not for all pictures. Tried the right-click thing, but no luck. I'll explore the article from the link that was posted. It mentioned a firewall and some other things that may be the cause of the problem. Thanks for the help!Do you have protection for viruses and spyware? Also, have you tried adjusting the security level for cookies?

Solve : forwarding without other addresses?

Answer»

Give me away to forward e-mail sent to me without forwarding all the e-mail addresses and whether it CONTAINS file attachments or not. Any ideas? That's pretty hard to do... Not even sure that it's POSSIBLE... I know that you can send all E-Mails over to one address, but not filter them for attachments, or from certain addresses...

[glb]Flame[/glb]computey...Ok , thats really simple ......lets say you have received a Email that was sent to a number of recipients......and you wish to forward it to someone else without all of the original recipients Email address .
Step 1 ....open the Email in question.
Step 2 ....click on the Forward button .
Step 3.....select and hi lite all of the original recipients.
Step 4.....Press the backspace key and they're all gone .
Step 5.....Put in the address of the person or persons you wish to send it to and press SEND .......

It's just that easy........and of course you can SEE if there's an attachment or not . If you dont wish to send the attachment ......simply right click on it and select REMOVE and its gone .

Hope this helps ,

dl65 Just clicked on an e-mail with a number of addresses attached. Clicked on `forward ` as you mentioned.Could not hi lite the addresses as they were missing. In the msg area it said"forwarded message attached". Using Yahoo e-mail.Change your forwarding options under Mail Options, General Preferences, Message Actions to....

Forwarding Messages: Forward as inline text

Then you can edit the message before sending it.

On a side note....... I hate forwarded messages that come in the form of attachments. Just another thing I have to open.By experimenting I found this to work in deleting addresses while forwarding--at least this one time.

Click the down arrow on the `forward` button, click `inline text`. After that delete addresses with mouse.
Will try your suggestion in the next incoming mail with said addresses. Thanks for patience.

Solve : modem & restart?

Answer»

Bought a new modem because I thought that was the problem, but it's still happening. After surfing for several minutes, I get a "no signal" light on the modem & can't surf any more. If I do a "Disk Cleanup" and restart, the modem comes back to life & I can surf again. Late at night, I can surf for hours with no problems but around 4 PM and Sunday afternoons, it starts the no service stuff.
I have Windows XP and a cable modem provided by SIGECOM.
Answers? Try powering off the computer, and then disconnecting powet to the modem for about 1 minute... Next, restore power back to the modem, and wait for about 30 seconds... Next, turn on your computer and see if you can use the internet... Have you contacted your ISP about this? Mayeb your phone line needs to be repaired?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Quote

... Mayeb your phone line needs to be repaired...

Why do phone lines NEED to be operational for a cable modem?
Whoops! I meant the cable's cable... Makes no sense... lol Make sure that the CABLES required to run your cable internet are working properly, and are properly connected...

[glb]Flame[/glb]After I read your suggestion, I called the cable place. They "tested" my line and SAID there was a lot of "play" there & they're going to send out a repair guy. Hooray! Keep your fingers CROSSED that this solves my problem. I'm a home-based travel agent & if I don't have the internet, I'm doomed!

MaryI have a modem V90 internal ( 115,5 Kb)
Everytime I surf the net after 15 minutes "surfing" you can HEAR a "TOUT" from the system and it automatically disconnects!!! What can I do about it???

A "tout"? That's a hard sound for me to imagine... Are you sure it's coming from the computer and not your modem?

Solve : Silent Runners...Not Sure What to do next?

Answer»

Thanks in advance to anyone who may be able to help me. I will start by saying that I am not very computer literate. I can get around ok, but not great. I have been unable to access secured cites. I have read through MANY of the topics and downloaded Registrar and Silent Runners. When I ran silent runners, it created an icon on my desktop that says Startup Programs.

The problem is that I'm not sure how to proceed now.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.Wait now... Why are you installing these programs? Any problems? Also, if the icon is on your desktop, just open it...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Silent Runners just creates a text file SHOWING everything open on your computer at the time it was run. If you are uncomfortable reading through it feel free to paste it here and we can look at it.

A better tool might be Hijack This from majorgeeks.com. Not only does it create the analysis file for review. It allows you a means to correct the problems it finds. Again you will need someone to look at the file for you is you are not comfortable with it before you take any actions.Thank you both for your help. I downloaded the silent runner because after browsing through all of the messages regarding this problem, I for some reason thought that was a way to try to fix it

I just tried to dowload the hijackthis and an error message came up saying the program performed an illegal operation. I have pasted the details below in case it might help...

Again, thank you for all of your help and your patience with me as well.Quote

I have been unable to access secured cites.

Do you get any messages when this happens?Yes, I do get a message. For example, I can get into the main screen of my credit card companies and banks, but I can't get into the screen where I enter my name and password to access my accounts. The screen that comes up is pasted below. I have tried to adjust my browser settings following some directions I found on this website from people having the same problem. I have also tried the resfresh button and followed the directions at the end of the error message about the security setting. I know it is not just the websites being down either because I can still access my accounts from my work computer.

Thanks in advance for any ideas you may have for me.

Solve : emailing from website?

Answer»

often i have the need to send an email from the "contact us" location at a web site ...my on line bank for example. when i type the message all i get are unrecognizable figures..such as __l_l____l (as best as i can describe).SORRY ..forgot to mention ...running winxp w/sp2 and microsoft spyware.Have you scanned for VIRUSES and spyware? Also is this a Contact us form, or an E-Mail message?

[glb]Flame[/glb]i perform defrag, spyware scans, etc. regularly. when i want to contact a particular website, i CLICK on "contact us" link which provides the email form.Hello all
I am searching this site at the moment as I have the same problem in that when I click on a contact us or send mail, I get a box requesting mail program details and a message SAYING "mail program unable to send mail" I am on windows ME and also use outlook express. I have no problems sending mail from Outlook express. This problem happened since I reinstalled windows last year. Has anyone resolved their issue regarding this as I would like to hear.
Many thanks ......1. Have you tried setting your keyboard to a different language?

2. Use [free] Mozilla Thunderbird rather than Outlook Express.

Get it hereLinnlane, just so I know here... Are you usign the same operating system as Hazel? (Windows ME)

[glb]Flame[/glb]Thank you for your SUGGESTIONS Raptor.
What language are you suggesting here?
I am not sure of the relevance.
Thanks
Hazel You can press CTRL + Shift to see if that helps solve your problem.Thist will change the language of your keyboard to whatever other language may be installed.

If there is no other language installed, then you will not have to investigate any further in that area since that would most likely not be the cause of your problem.

Solve : My connection "times out"?

Answer»

Why does it do that??? After I log off for an hour or so (or even less) and come back to connect to the internet, I can't. I have to re-start the computer and then I get a connection. Why is this happening so often?
I have a cable connection and all the correct lights on the modem are blinking green. My OS is Mellinium. Could it be the cheap modem (RCA)? Please help!
Windows ME.... Oh god... Well, lets start with the simple stuff here then... Do you have virus and spyware protection? Have you made any changes to your system lately?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Yeah, I've noticed that Windows ME gets that reaction.
Yes, I do have virus (McAfee) and spyware protection. I did recently (a month ago or so) have problems where I had to extract files from the ME CD that were corrupted. My guess is that my son went to a games website and maybe downloaded something "bad". It took me about 4 days to straighten everything out. These files were 2 .dll . I can't REMEMBER the exact files but they must have been very important because without them I couldn't get on the internet and I couldn't run any programs, not even my virus scan.Well, downloading something "bad" should not be too much of an issue if you have rpotection... Maybe he deleted something important from My Computer? Also, try contacting your Internet Serice Provider (ISP) for support... They might be able to point something extra out...

[glb]Flame[/glb]check firewalls........check isp.......for broadband restrict TIME..do you do alot of downloads.......why do you log off??dump mcfee.........Dump McAfee??? Why? What do you reccomend instead? Norton? I do intend to check the isp but, I'm not sure what you mean by the restrict time? When I say "log off" I click on the upper corner "X" to close the internet window. I understand that I'm still technically connected. If nothing else works then I will probably get a new modem. I'm thinking of getting a new computer anyway.
Thanks for all the advice.i agree dump the mac norton is a world above it and while your at it upgrade that comp to xp if it can run me it will run xp much better os with no problems this machine had me on it wene it was new but was having WAY too MANY problems crashing hack ive even got xp running on a p2 running at only 450 mhz with 256 mbs of ram so the best thing you can do the cheapest way is get the new os and norton system works and viruse protection and it will be cheaper then new comp Hmmm....install Windows XP. This appeals to me. Do I have to uninstall Windows ME in order to install Windows XP? Could I intall right on top of ME? What would happen to my files? outlook address book?
Advice is greatly appreciated.Quote

1. No.
2. Yes.
3. Nothing.
4. Norton--McAfee, they're about the same. I've started to switch over to AVG. It's a winner!! BTW, the problem is not the cable modem, they either work or they don't, they might be slow, if the ISP's modem configuration FILE is corrupted.
Thanks so much for all the advice. You guys rock! contact your isp............cable user........even by upgrading to winxp may NOT solve the problem?
What is the make and model of your pc?/more info on cable..........is it a usb modem..........

Solve : please help!!! invalid security cert.?

Answer»

hello- i am having problems downloading the software from our image hosting site- this seems to baffle them completly as they haven't been able to respond with any thing but canned responses- anyway when i try to down load their software with active x my computer will not ALLOW it because it says the security cert. is invalid because it is out of date- i have enabled the computer to accept all active controls, turned off the FIREWALL- the virus scanner, and set allsecurity levels to low as they told me and it still won't download- i never had this problem on my computer that ran windows mill- my NEW computer runs xp- please help!!! or at least help me help them!! I'm guessing that you have Service Pack 2 installed? When it blocks the rpogram from downloading, you should see a little bar appear... If you click on that bar, and click on Allow blocked content, then all should be well...

[glb]Flame[/glb]i've tried that- when i do that i then get a window that says they have blocked it becuase the secuirty cert. when i veiw the security cert. it says that it may have been altered or out of date- the cert. says it vaild thru 2004- i have also had this prob with other sites as well lately- LIKE when i tried to import my favorites in yahoo-See this *click here* article on Security Zones. i don't think you included the link-what article are you refering to?Click on this in my previously made post.

thank you for the link
i have set already set my security preferences at the LOWEST- enabled activex to downolad - shut off the firewall- allowed the popups- and added the site to trusted sites-

i don't know what else i can do-

First of all;

Reset all the above mentioned configurations to their default settings or higher. immediatly.

Second;

See this article. Manually remove and/or add the security certificate.also- in my browser it gives the option to download activex - when i choose to install it anyway i get a window that says the cert. is invalid-

[glb]Flame[/glb]adding the site did not help
Are you only using the Windows Sp2 Firewall, or another firewall?

[glb]Flame[/glb]i'm using the windows firewall.... i tryed disableing it and accessing the site. but that didn't work either. Is ActiveX ENABLED for your browser?

See if placing the website under a Safe zone helps.

To place a website in a safe zone follow the STEPS written below:

1. Start
2. Configuration
3. Control Panel
4. Internet Options
5. Security
6. Click on the "Trusted [web]sites" icon.
7. Click on the "Websites" button
8. Follow onscreen instructions.
-- I believe you can untag the Server VERIFICATION (HTTPS) at the BOTTOM.

Alternative choice:

1. Reset all zones to their default settings

2. From step 5 of on: click on the button next to 'Default setting (or level) and CONFIGURE the zones yourself.
