Solve : Lost my floppy disc driver?

Answer»

I guess I really messed up.  I have a Dell, 2350, Dimension w/Windows XP.  The computer is running very slow at times and does not have any virus, spyware, etc.  I went to Dell support who recommended downloading an updated BIOS.  It has to be installed thru the Floppy drive and the drive will not work right.  It gets about 2/3 complete and then goes CRAZY and quits.  I tried it about 10 times with DIFFERENT floppy discs --- no good. Then I decided to uninstall the floppy driver (THINKING it is corrupt) and install a new one.  Well Dell does not have a new driver for my floppy.  Now it is not even showing up under MY Computer.  Help, how can I get a new driver downloaded? Floppy drive drivers are built into Windows. If you delete it in Control Panel/System and reboot it should load it. If not, choose Add New Hardware and follow the STEPS.

Solve : so, is this an IE7 problem??

Answer»

not sure.  But I have the typical illegal operations popup slowing my computer and terminating my ability to browse.  I've done an AVG free scan in safe mode with system restore turned off.  Found nothing.

Does AVG scan the REGISTRY?  I did a free online scan of the registry and it found over 1000 "problems."  Of course in order to fix these I had to fork out 30 bucks for the software.  Any suggestions?oh, and :  Win XP Pro, 2002 SP2

Dell Workstation PWS 340

Pentium 4 CPU 2.00 GHZ, 1 GB of RAMhello?Flip81.......  Lets run thru this again.
You are using win XP Pro SP2 ........
You have the free AVG installed ( latest version )
You ran it in Safe Mode and nothing showed up.     And you did this because ?
You ran some online registry scanner and it found a lot of errors and then wanted 30.00 bucks to fix them........

Here's what I would do .
download and install  ccleaner ..... get it at ......
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Run the cleaner portion..... remove anything found .
Run the issues portion ...... do the backup when prompted and then fix all the issues.
Next d/L .... Spybot ..... get it at .....  http://www.tucows.com/preview/310138
Install it and do a full scan ......  Fix anything found ......
Next d/l AVG Anti-spyware free ......... get it at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
Install it and do a full system scan.
all these apps are free and do work .......

And you did this because ?

ha!  I dunno there DL, maybe because I'm not as smart as you?

anyways, thanks for the info buddy.Ok I did EVERYTHING respectfully.  This problem persists.  Any other options?   :-/No guarantee that the $30 fix will work, and it is most likely unneccessary. Exact error messages would help isolate the problem as would specifics about your hardware and software, how long Windows has been loaded, etc.Flip81 ......

But I have the typical illegal operations popup slowing my computer and terminating my ability to browse.
LOL ....... would you please explain exactly what this typical popup message says......
Hummmmmm , I have seen the illegal operations message in Win 98 , but never in win XP pro ........ ( but on the other hand , I may not be as smart as the average bear........ )

BTW , is this the same MACHINE that you have been posting about back in early Nov ........

Solve : Cookie problem? Please help?

Answer»

I seem to have a problem since upgrading to IE7.
Now when I visit most of the websites I & buy from, i.e Amazon I either can't put anything in my shopping cart or it lets me put 1 thing in but empties it if I try to put another item in.
I also have to keep logging in over & over again.
Another site (M&P) said there was something in my cart but when going to the cart it's empty.
Another site I have been buying from regularly for a couple of years is now very helpfully telling me that I need to set my cookies to Medium High to EVEN be able to have a shopping cart with them.
My cookies are set to Medium High & I haven't changed anything recently other than upgrading to IE7.
I run System Mechanic regularly which deletes all temporary files.
I run AdAware after every internet session, also Spybot & Ewido.
I have McAfee Virusscan & Zone Alarm Pro installed & run regular scans.
I'm going mad, I can't buy anything online!
Thank goodness it wasn't this bad before Xmas!
Can ANYONE help?    Tracey,

You might want to try to change the way IE7 handles cookies by doing the following:

Tools/Internet Options/Privacy Tab/Advanced Button

Check the box labled "Override automatic cookie handling".
Check allow first party cookies
Check allow third party cookies
Check Allow session cookies

Save your changes by clicking APPLY and/or Ok until you return to your browser.  Close your browser and reopen it, returning to the site(s) you are having ISSUES with to see if this resolves your issues.

You can always clean up the cookies LATER by deleting them using the delete button in Internet Options of IE7...or by using your System Mechanic software program.

Please let us know if this has resolved your issue by posting here.

Happy Holidays!

Solve : Problems posting in forums?

Answer»

This problem only happens on another forum site I'm on, not here or I wouldnt be able to post right now

Well the problem is, everytime I'm on that other site, I cannot view pages where I can post while I am logged on. When I am about to go into a thread, a pop up shows up saying "The internet is having some connection problems" then offers to send an error report. After I say yes or no, the internet closes on me.

However, I can view these thread pages when I am logged out of my account, which is when I cannot post.

I can also view threads with multiple pages when I'm logged in as long as its not on the last page, where you normally post. If I try, then the net closes on me

Therefore, I cannot view any thread pages where I can post while being logged in, which is having the ablitiy to post, b/c my computer has a problem with that.

Sounds complicated, yes...

ANYONE know WHATS wrong with the piece of machine sitting on my desk that I'm typing on?Email the other site to MAKE SURE the problem is not theirs.
What site is it?I've already asked all the administrators on the site, but they dont know whats wrong.

They've suggested I delete cookies and temp files/folders but it hasnt HELPED. My other opinon is to buy a new monitor :-?

The site is www.lyricalgods.com

Thanks

There isn't one shred of evidence in your original post that indicates you need a new monitor.  So, where did that notion come from? Quote

Solve : Anyone know of a way to make IE7 look like IE6?

Answer»

Hey, I installed IE7 on one of my many systems, and I dont like the look of it. Sort of like when XP came out and I upgraded from Win 2000 Pro...But fortunately they had a Classic View to select to, to get the Win 2000 Pro look to XP.

Upon the basic install of IE7, you dont have your Menu Bar.... Big Problem since I use it A LOT, so I found a way to get it back, by selecting to get the MENU Bar....

But now I have my URL Address above my Menu Bar, which is opposite of IE6, and man its an eye sore. Reminds me of the old Dodge Diplomat Cars of the 1980's that had their indicator lights dead CENTER above the head lights, while all other cars had them to the side or below the headlights.

I tried to SHUFFLE it around like MS Office will allow for you to do with word or excels layout...But they are all locked into POSITION and I cant find a way to unlock and move it to the look of IE6 ..... Man what a PAIN!!!!!!

Anyone know if maybe there is a lock that I an failing to find to get the URL Address Bar to be below the Menu Bar or if this is just the new way that we are stuck with if we want to continue with IE as a browser???   Thanks!! [smiley=angry.gif]FireFox !

Just kidding but it's a good alternative...

If you google IE7 problems/questions there are a million hits out there that say the same.

It wasn't ready for release and they shouldn't have done so.

A Decent Site

where they argue/discuss the pros and cons might be of some help.Personally...I like the new IE7...and for those of you who don't...you can always GO to the "Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and remove it.

You may not be able to permanently get the Menu bar where you want it and if you don't like where it is, now, you can always use the hotkey "Alt" on your keyboard to turn it on and off while you are browsing...nice feature...in my humble opinion.

I like the way they have included tabbed browsing and the ability to choose your own search providers...as well as being able to view multiple web pages at once...nice touch.

Best of luck!Gotta admit I like the new IE7. The tabbed pages save me tons of navigation.

Seems to me, what you want is IE6. Why change if it makes you happy?

Solve : Wirless AOL Plz help?

Answer»

Hi

I have AOL broadband connected throught the phone line adsl, with a second computer using wirless AOL. The other day i noticed i couldn't logg on to the internet using the AOL browser on the wirless computer (AOL uses it own browser requiring a password and user name) but for some reason i was ABLE to connect to the internet using internet EXPLORER. This is not possible as AOL requires that you have to sign in using there browser first, so i got to thinking that i must somehow be connected to another computer in my area. Or is it somehow possible that they could be connected to me even though my wirless AOL appears faulty. Is there a way i can DETERMINE that i am connected to some other network. Can you also tell me if SOMEONE is connecting to me could they hack my email...ect or steal anyother information i have.Does anyone have any suggestions.Well, apparently you have a wireless NIC (though we don't know which KIND) and it would seem that you are connected to another network. You can check the network connection in your NIC'S configuration utility. That is probably why you are not now connecting to your AOL.

You might want to uninstall Mozilla and reinstall it and if it asked for a password ignore it.

I DOWNLOADED Mozilla from here:  http://www.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x/

I've INSTALLED it and don't recall ever being asked for a password.

Solve : Internet Explorer generating garbled text in our sign-up page?

Answer»

This is a concern that I have always been addressing our technical team in the company. But I was not always getting a direct responce and the problem always cropping up every now and then (supposedly after they have fixed it).

We have a sign up page in our site. I am giving the link here to check and replicate the matter yourself: <SPAM LINK DELETED>If you are using IE, and you pull down and choose from the DROP down menus, the page would refresh and then garbled text would crop up every where. This would hinder all attempt when you press the join button. An error MESSAGE would come up and tell you that it is a failed transaction.

Now this problem would crop up every now and then. The programming team, which unfortunately is outsourced in another country, would respond by 'fixing' the problem. But as I SAID it still crops up - and we dont know how sign ups have already slipped our hands.

This problem does not occur in other browsers.
I opened that page in IE 7.  I CLICKED on some drop down arrows and nothing unusual happened.  Why would the page need to refresh due to merely making a selection from a drop down list?  That doesn't make sense.I did the same with IE6 with no problems.  Is it just one machine or multiple machines at one site or multiple sites?

Alan <><  I deleted his spam link as it was ANOTHER attempt to get CH members to go to his site. Still against the rules, buddy.  What the.. I want to see the website!

Solve : Slow Internet Explorer - need some help!?

Answer»

Hello there.  I'm having a bit of an issue with internet explorer.  Before I get into that, here's the system info thats relevant.  I'm using Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6.0 (the latest version of 6.0).  Wireless connection with my linksys.

The problem is that I can be online and it works, then after a few hours, pages just don't load.  The internet works, but nothing loads.  I stay online on AIM, but when I go online, it just says "connecting to" and then the numbers in the bottom left corner.  I can fix this, but it's a pain to have to do it every few hours.  To fix it, I just right click on wireless connection and click repair, and then its good to go again perfectly fine for a few hours.

Any ideas on how to fix this?  There's no viruses, I use quite a few things to keep all that taken care of.  I havent downloaded anything recently, so its not as if there's new stuff taking up space.  I cleaned out the temporary files, didn't do it.  I know internet explorer 7 is out, but my school's website has issues with it so we were told to keep 6.  And I will not just get rid of it, I'm sorry, but I just don't like firefox, even if it is "better", so dont suggest that please.

Any ideas?  Or am I stuck clicking "repair" whenever its doing this? How long has this been happening?
Try cleaning up with CCleaner (install without Yahoo! toolbar) and see if that makes a difference.
You say you have XP, but is it SP2?
I'll admit, I don't like Firefox EITHER, but for the heck of it, give it a try for a day or so.  Does the same thing happen?
You have protection, but what protection do you have?

Keep us updated.  With the given information, I suspect it may be an internet issue although other things SEEM to work with it.  Do you do any online gaming by any chance? It just started happening about a week ago or so... give or take a few days.  No more than 2 weeks.  I do have XP SP2, and the protection is Norton Antivirus, internet security, ad aware and spycleaner.  And no settings in norton have been changed recently, so it's not an issue there.  CCleaner SEEMS to do basically the same thing my Norton internet security does... so no help there.  And I will try Firefox, but I just reallly hate it.Well, it's mainly just to see if the problem is limited to only IE or not.

Also, I'd suggest doing a search for AVG Free.  Download that, update it, and scan with it in Safe Mode. Please don't run two antiviruses at the same time.Well, the problem still happens with Firefox.  So is it the linksys then?  This is the only computer connected on the wireless network, and the one directly connected to the linksys doesn't seem to be having this problem.  I've unplugged everything that goes into both the linksys and the cable modem, plugged them in again, still nothing.  Hitting the little reset button on the linksys did nothing either.  This is frustrating and annoying as *censored*.Go ahead and try AVG and see if that picks anything up.  And like GX1_Man says, don't run two anti-virus programs at once.  You'll need to temporarily disable Norton first.

You may need to give your internet provider a call and see what they have to say.nothing on AVG... and yeah.  Norton runs on a schedule, its not running all the time.  Internet security is, but thats a bit different... i'll call the service provider... but is it an issue with them?  like i said, the computer the linksys is hooked up with seems to work fine all the time... so i don't know if its the isp or not.At the moment, it's the only suggestion I can think of.  If it's not a problem with your ISP, at least we can eliminate that from the list of possibilities.  Personally, I don't have a lot of experience with linsys and networking and all that jazz, but there are others here who do, so maybe someone else will chime in.My money is on Internet Security being the culprit here....can you dis-able it to test ? ?Hi there, this could be a line issue mate. What can happen is if to many errors happen on the far end(your line) basically there is either noise on the line or the line has been configured to run at to higher speed. Call your ISP and get them to SLOW the line down just a fraction say 1mb, then ask them to run tests from their clt card. Then get them to ping your system say 150mbs worth of info and see how many errors appear on the line. Dont let them fob you off. Also get them to check to see if the noise on the line i.e VOICE is inturupting in to the broad band signal, is thats the case they need to raise the Db setting on the line. This may reduce speed slightly but will give you one heck of a steady connection.

Good luck.

Solve : Need linking help?

Answer»

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this or not, but here goes:
I want to know how to get the link for a download.

i.e. when you click on a download, and the box pops up where you can choose to either save the file or open it. How do I get the url to just LEAD straight to that download box, instead of linking to the site where you download it?

I am currently using Firefox 2.0
thanks for the help.Try right-clicking on the link and SELECTING Copy Link LOCATION.  That will give you the URL of the file.  This can be a bit tricky sometimes, though.  If you're not given that OPTION for whatever reason, you can use something like Free Download Manager.  When it prompts you for a download, you'll be able to see the URL.  It's not the best method, but it works.

If you plan on using this to hotlink files...that's a very big no-no.what's "hotlinking files"?In regards to forums and your own personal site...it's when you link directly to the file for people to download instead of linking to the page it's hosted on.  It's frowned upon greatly, as it's considered "stealing bandwidth".  Much along the same lines of posting someone's picture instead of hosting it yourself. No doubt, you should request permission to hotlink and not do it unless permission is GRANTED.

Solve : Compacting Browsers.?

Answer»

Hi all, i overheard someone talking about how they can put several screens in to one browser i.e you click your browser and have 4 screens within one tab.
Don`t be confused with I.E 7.0`s and firefox`s multitab versions, i literally mean 4 windows open with just one click. Does anyone know how or what piece of software is used to do this?

P.S I don`t mean the cascading windows either in the toolbar section.

Thanks for any help with this.See page 4 of this PDF, the part TITLED Getting Internet EXPLORER to Automatically Open All Tabs You Had Running When You Last Used It.  Does that help?  I believe this still opens multiple tabs, but opens them simultaneously.  I don't know how you can open multiple sites in one tab.it's not QUITE clear what you want but i have a great little add on for firefox called Split browser which gives you something like this

is this what you want? That is really cool, gonna try it out hyperhedron.
I love firefox and it's add-ons

EDIT: Split browser was chaos and ate at my RAM, LOL. I uninstalled it....no need  The OP may be REFERRING to the IE7 Quick Tabs (View==>Quick Tabs). It gives a nice visual summary of all the open tabs.

Solve : Strange problem when search internet with word S**?

Answer»

Sorry for double post because after the first post when I actually used the word S*P*Y in the subject, I came back and can't read my own thread because when I click on my subject, the whole website disappears. Now I have to add "*" in between the 3 letters and see if this work.

I need help with this storage issue using IE 7.0 with my Windows XP.
Whenever I search or click on the link that has to do with the word "S*P*Y". When I click on the link, the whole SCREEN will flash and disappear! I also notice that the same happens with the word "Tactical".

The problems only OCCUR when I use the search function or click the HOT links to the topic containing those words.

For EXAMPLE, if I type the word SPY and google the whole website will just disappear!

Well, since some suggested that it's the server so I called my server (Covad DSL) and the tech support setup 2 new connections with renewed configurations as well as refreshed the new line provision and reset the modem.

That did NOT solve the problems! They think it has to do with the firewall which later turned off but no luck, so they asked me to look into my virus protection software!

Well, I also downloaded and installed Firefox.....no go because it still acts exactly like the IE 7.0 xx. I tested this by searching the word "spy" in Google bar, again white out!

I am thinking of looking into my Norton Anti-Virus setup or I also installed Ad-Aware from Lava soft and scan my computer but no changes.

Just tried disabling the auto-PROTECT feature of Norton, still no go.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
I'm not a pro at this, but have you checked your content advisor to see if those words have been blocked.  I have enabled mine through IE properties and added certain words to block in search engines to protect my grandchildren.  If they type certain words it blocks them from viewing the site.that actually sounds kind of cool, Happyface. How do you do it?I was unable to recreate this issue in any browser i tried so there is something on your machine that is causing this...I finally got help here    (it took several weeks though):

http://www.temerc.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=3423585#3423585Try sending an E-mail with the words 'pentagon, terrorist, al-qaida' etc, you'll see it takes longer to arrive than the usual E-mail with the same amount of words!

...and then listen for the knock on the door.  Actually, I think I have had my memory wiped on several occasions. You got my attention here so I tried it using Firefox, Opera and IE. Works fine with me though....

Solve : Certain websites on my computer will not load anymore?

Answer»

My computer had started running sluggishly so I ran my SpyBot & AdAware. After which I turned my firewall on (Windows XP supplied). After which Match. com (don't laugh) would not load. I went back and added amtch.com as a trusted website and also turned off my firewall to see if that was the problem. The webpage still will nto load. I have TRIED typing in the address as well as clicking on a link adn enither will get me to theri website. I haven't noticed any other WEBSITES with this problem but I am able to get ONTO Match.com from other computers.
Any suggestions for this computer novice???OK, I guess I solved the problem myself. I re-ran AdAware and saw how many cookies were listed as high risk items. I went back into IE and deleted all my cookies under the tools, options. I also depeted all files under here. Then tried pulling up the website and it came up no problem.
Can anyone at least LET me know why they think this happened?  The Temporary Internet File folder can get so clogged up your browser will have hiccups...

DLoad and install CCLEANER and run it on a regular basis.I know! I know! IE is a s***ty browser.. Get Firefox.

Solve : Website Wrapper?

Answer»

Just recently my internet browsers (both Firefox and IE) have stumbled on a problem with certain sites. (for example rottentomatoes.com or ign.com, sites I used to frequent often). Now WHENEVER I go to the sites the backgrounds and such load but down at the bottom left corner it says "WAITING for wrapper.ign.com..." and will stay loading for as long as the tab/window is open. However when I use a proxy I can get past that and into the sites... does anyone know how to fix this? What happened before this started?
What type of connection do you have?
What protection do you have?
Are your OS and browsers up to date?Nothing happened before it happened, one day it was WORKING and the next it wasn't.

I have cable.

Spy Sweeper and CounterSpy are the two anti-spyware programs I have and have run recently.wrapper.ign.com would seem like an ad-server that IGN.com uses. Did you install any of their software? If they offer any.

I personally think cleaning cache, temp and cookies will do.. Yeah that's what I thought as well, I've cleared cache and cookies and temp files to no AVAIL.

Solve : Cookie troubles?

Answer»

Ever since a week ago my browser has been acting strange...HERES my problem;

at first all my bookmarks and tab bookmarks suddenly disappeared over night then certain websites wouldn't let me login due to my browser was not accepting cookies. Confused about this matter i did what i knew to do, check my internet settings(on firefoxV2 and internet explorer v6) so i did and to my surprise my settings were fine it was accepting cookies and yet it WOULD not let me login my account due to my browser not accepting any cookies. I then TRIED UNINSTALLING Firefox as well as internet explorer and reinstalling them and deleting all my past settings, that didn't solve the problem, then i put all my settings to default that still didn't help, and then i tried disabling my firewall messing with my security options to see if something was blocking it but that didn't help at all. Finally i figured it was a virus or something infecting my computer that caused this so i simply scanned for anything possible using CA Security center at first then scanning under Nortan. Yeah it picked up some little BUGS but that still didn't seem to solve the problem i finally came to google to search up if anyone had some similar problems of this matter and couldn't find anything till i just decided to visit a computer help forum which leads me to here. Websites in particular that I'd like to access are Animalcrossingcommunity.com forums and YTMND.com which show up telling me that the website was not able to save cookies to my computer and im sure that its not the website corrupted or anything because i was able to access the websites fine with my laptop

http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=3ygpwcp
(I actually did view the troubleshooting guide but it didn't help just gave directions on how to enable cookies)

Ive also tried cookie testing on certain websites by googling up some and they also said my browser wasn't accepting the cookies

Here are my settings:
http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2me9x1y

Weird how some websites allow me in such as this one?
Is there any possible way to fix this?

Solve : This seemed the best place...?

Answer»

alright: since yesterday evening, I've been having a problem with my internet connection. except for IE, no other program is allowed to connect. I've already run a thorough virus&ware scan, so that can't be it. Also, none of the programs that attempt to connect give a problem with the connection limitations. In fact, none of them would even connect after lifting all limitations.

If this problem sounds familiar to you, please tell em what you've done about it. Help highly appreciated. The subject is not a description of what you THINK about your location, but a short description of the problem with keywords..

As for your problem; sounds like you blocked off most ports with your firewall. Since you didn't mention what firewall nor OS you have, I can't help you.

1. what's a firewall?
2. what's an OS?OS: Operating system
Firewall: Click here

Oh, alright. I don't think I have a Firewall and I run on WindowsYes, but which Windows?

And you are going to have to be certain you do not have a firewall because what you describe looks a lot like a firewall.

It could either be hardware or software, hardware as in Router or modem or software as in Windows XP Firewall or any other vendor's firewall. Yes, I do run windows XP!

meanwhile, I've figured some more things out: The only programs that will connect, both over internet and the local network, are IE and Outlook.

I'm sorry for my dumbness, raptor, but where would I start looking for a firewall? I know I don't have a hardware one at LEAST...

and yeah, it all worked fine till a few days ago. What have you done a few days ago?

The Windows XP Firewall can be found under settings -> Control panel -> Windows Firewall.

Try shutting it down for a moment to see if the problem persists, if it doesn't. Your job is clear and you'll have to reconfigure your firewall. Well, I went to the conttrol panel, clicked the Wondows Firewal ICON and got an error: "The settings of Windows Firewall cannot be displayed due to an unknown problem"

I haven't done anything unusual to my pc lately...

What anti-virus and anti-spyware have you used? well, pretty much everything in Hitman Pro 2 and a few online scans... Pandasoftware and bitprotector I think....Well, uninstall all of that and use the following in safe mode:

1. AVG Free
2. Adaware SE
3. Windows Defender
4. Crap Cleaner

Download the latest MS UPDATES as well.

uhm, would it be allowed ot give any direct links to those? Searchers ar a nightmare...AVG Free
Adaware SE
Windows Defender
Crap Cleaneralright, I ran all 4. plenty of stuff found and fixed/removed, but the problem persists and I still get the error when trying to open windows firewall. I rebooted after scans.

EDIT: almost forgot! while trying to update itself (none of them could because of the discussed problem here), one of them had an error about proxy settings. don't know if this helps but I thought it worth mentioning...

I know about Firefox and Thunderbird by MOZILLA. I downloaded Mozilla version 1.7.20060.41421. It has an excellent email program and I love the browser.

What I don't understand is why download Firefox and Thunderbird when ONE install of Mozilla does the same thing?

For most it's basically a matter of PREFERENCE....plus Mozilla seems to update and work on FireFox and Thunderbird a little more often.Mozilla doesn't have the plug-ins Firefox does. Solve : IE 7.0 ERROR MESSAGE?

Answer»

When I try to connect to a WEB site, link, etc. I get this message "INTERNET EXPLORER CAN NOT OPEN WEB PAGE". How can I FIX this! (I have the workaround user utility and it does not work most of the time) It happens all the time and even when I use Diagnostic nothing helps. I really don't want to go back to IE 6.0 at this point so is there anything I can do except wait for Internet 7.0 to ISSUE a Service pack? Not a big problem but it drives me crazy. Thankyou in advance for any ideas, suggestions, advice, answers, etc etc.

p.s. I am running Windows XP (home) with IE 7.0Are you sure this isn't an ISP problem?  Does IE6 work?  What about other programs that use an internet connection?
What protection do you have?  Have you run any virus scans?
How long has this been happening?
Does your XP have SP2?Get Firefox. What is the "workaround user utility" and what "Diagnostic" are you talking about?

As CBMatt said, Does your XP have SP2?

I suggest giving this a shot.  Download CCleaner and run the Windows scan and the Issues scan.  Remove all the STUFF found by the Windows scan.  When you run the Issues scan, BACKUP the Registry when prompted, and remove everything it found.

I have macromedia installed. Is there a better flash add on or ANYTHING i can do?

DVDs and avi files all work smoothly so i thought it was a browser/software PROBLEM. Same happens in IE

Many thanks

Solve : ie 7.0?

Hi'

I am new to the forum so I'll introduce myself.  My name is Bob and I run a Intel mb with xp pro sp2. I would like to download IE 7.0 but I do not want IE 6.0 deleted. Can anyone tell how I can accomplish this? I have a web site and I like to keep tabs on how it looks in different browsers. Thanks.

BobDLoading and installing IE7 will not affect IE6....as a matter of fact it is relatively easy to revert back to 6 after you see what fun ver. 7 is...
However, I would not want to repeatedly install and uninstall IE7.  Sure would be good if you could use SEPARATE computers for this.  Any chance you could get cheap used PC?  It could even be Win 98SE, with IE 6.  Any reason, besides curiosity, you want to use IE7 when Firefox is a much BETTER & more secure brower, IMHO?

Clearly, is it for designing purposes.  In his OP, he said, "I have a web site and I like to keep tabs on how it looks in different browsers."Wow, I totally missed that WHOLE sentence.  Sorry, I'm tired and maybe a little hungover...

Thanks for putting me in my place, soybean.  Ha.

In that case...you should also download/install Opera if you haven't already done so.  It can be a pain (for me anyway) getting certain random things to work properly, but it's good to use for reference.

Solve : Internet works (i.e. Messenger, etc) yet IE and Firefox do not?

Answer»

Hi,

I am on a network with my roommates and we got the internet working for everyone but I am having difficulty using the internet with any browser (I have both IE and Firefox).  My messenger works fine and I tried going into the run>cmd> and pinging google.ca and it worked which my friend mentioned that it means the connection works.

I was looking under network places and internet connection and it says it is disabled and when I click ENABLE it does something and says enabled for a second but then becomes disabled again.  I am not sure how to correct this but this seems like it may be the SOURCE of the problem.

If anyone has any ideas as to how to fix this I would greatly appreciate to hear them.  I am going to try and reinstall a browser but not sure if this will SOLVE the problem.

Thanks.Has this ever worked?

extensions.spellcheck.inline.max-misspellings  -  Status: Default      Type:integer     Vaule: 500

layout.spellcheckDefault   -    Status:Default      Type:integer       Vaule: 1

spellchecker.dictionary     -     Status: User set   Type : string       Vaule: en-US

How did you remove the others ? ?I entered the add ons section and unistalled them.

Solve : FAQ database Speeding up FF?

Answer»

Hi Dilbert,

I reconfigured my FIREFOX browser as per your instructions in FAQ on reducing memory usage.  I have two Firefox windows open (both for the CH website).  My task manager says that Firefox is currently using 94k for memory.  That seems pretty HIGH compared to the 7k you gave as an example once I reconfigured. (e-machine , XP)

Thanks,
MarkNot sure I understand your post.  You telling Dilbert you are not happy with the reconfig, with a little sarcasm thrown in.

Yikes, sarcasm.  No not at all.    Not sure how you got that interpretation.

I was just truly confused as to why my Firefox was using so much memory. Especially after Dilbert's RECONFIGURATION showed such a dramatic decrease in memory usage.

For example, according to my task manager, I have only one application running right now.  My Firefox browser.  I have one window open.  This one.  Yet my task manager says that firefox.exe is using 127,000k in memory.  Hopefully, you can see how a rookie would be confused.

No, no, I am very grateful for any and all help.

Thank you, thank you,
Mark

  Quote

my task manager says that firefox.exe is using 127,000k in memory
...and what's the big deal about it?
Mine is using 193,000k at this moment, but yet, when I look at CPU column (which matters), it shows 0-2%. I see no issue here.Yikes, sarcasm.  No not at all. Sorry I misinterpreted.  The info Broni posted should ease your mind.  Good Luck. Ok guys.  Thanks.  I am just trying to sort through things at the moment.  I'll read up on the TOPIC and try not to bother you guys with trivial questions again.  Sorry.  For some reason I thought that I had done something incorrectly because I did not seem to get the same results as Dilbert did.  That's all.  If it not something to worry about, that's a good thing, and I'll move on.I tried this thing as well and it reduced my memory usage a bit. The more tabs/windows you have open, the more memory it will use up.It's possible the results in that FAQ were for an older version...
At any rate it's still a performance tweak that works....and pretty soon, they're gonna have final version of FF3, which corrects memory usage problem.

Solve : Opera?

Answer»

Greetings, I have recently acquired a computer -Dell Model WHL-XPS with XP-home installed. The only browser currently installed is "Opera". Had never heard of it before--of course there are many things i have never heard of before. I do realize that ones choice of browsers is kind of a personal choice thing--like one choices in art. However i have had experience primarily with most versions of IE and some with FIREFOX (the latter gave me lots of problems). But that has been it so far. I would be interested to know what users of Opera (PAST and current) have to say re the pros's and con's related to it. I of course will continue to use it but your comments may facilitate my ultimate decision re retaining or discarding it. Thank you, truenorthHaven't used it much but it is trusted just as much a Firefox is. Definitely a keeper if you don't mind LEARNING it's ins and outs.I use it and have never had a problem.

set up your speed dial function and you will be lovin' it!

you can also download torrents without adware prone software like bit/torrent/lord/comet and azurez etc.Thank's guys. I shall continue to use it.Won't even install another on that computer (at least for now) to force myself to learn it.truenorthI'm suprised to hear that you had issues with FireFox...normally it's the opposite.PATIO,I only had it some time ago installed on a computer that also had IE6 on it and from the time i installed it (FireFox) i began getting lots of freezes on both. I was constantly sending error reports to Microsoft. Once i deleted FireFox all returned to normal.truenorthSounds as if they were both fighting to be the default browser and were steppin on each others toes...do you remember if you set one or the other as Default ? ?Patio, Yes i came to that conclusion myself (though i have to admit only due to the circumstantial evidence of their behavior when both were installed). Yes i retained IE6 as  default and only used FireFox on demand. I also had(and still have) the google tool bar installed. I,m afraid i never really gave Firefox a fair trial as i uninstalled it shortly after the problems occur ed. I am currently trying Opera on a computer where it exists by itself. If my MEMORY serves me right it seemed to me (at least on Win98) that it is very difficult if not impossible to "remove IE".Didn't Bill lose some court cases on that issue (in Europe i believe)? truenorthGoogle toolbar is bad news.I agree with Broni above...
And yes IE is problematic to remove and actually should not be attempted.
Best to just delete the Desktop shortcut and just pretend it's gone.

I actually leave it on customer machines but i change the target to point to Firefox....

Solve : title in my web browser?

Answer»

Hi guys! Can anyone help me putting a title in my web browser IE? I forgot the procedure in the regedit. Waiting for reply. Thanks!Hack Browser Titles in IE and Firefox

This is a perfect tweak for those of us who LOVE to put our own original STAMP on things. In this case, it's our Internet Explorer or Firefox browser title. Allow me to clarify: when you open up your browser window, the upper left corner displays the current page, followed by "Microsoft Internet Explorer" or "Mozilla Firefox". FOLLOW  directions to make it say whatever you like.
Steps for IE

Before you mess with the registry, please back it up so that if you make a mistake, you don't get screwed.

1. Open up Regedit (Start>Run>Regedit).

2. Navigate to this string: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

3. Create a new string value (Right-click "Main" key folder, SELECT New>String Value).

4. Rename the value "Window Title" without the quotes (Right-click value, choose Rename).

5. Right-click "Window Title" and choose Modify. In the value data section, type your title of choice.
6. Now, launch a new instance of IE and marvel at your clever changes!

Steps for Firefox 0.9 and up

Wouldn't you know it... there aren't really any complicated steps to do this. Just DOWNLOAD an extension called Titlebar Tweaks and you'll be good to go.

I have been running the latest Firefox release, 3.01 for the past few weeks and I have FINALLY come to the conclusion that it's still not fast enough for me to use as my default browser.

I have tried doing a few TWEAKS, which have sped things up some, but I'm still not impressed with it's overall loading of pages and images. So now, after reading about how fast Opera is, I think I'm going to at least try it out.

One of things that concerns me though, is that I currently know nothing about add-ons or plugins or whatever you might call them for Opera. My main concern at this point is finding some kind of utility that will sync my Opera favorites with my Internet Explorer favorites AUTOMATICALLY. In Firefox they had a neat little utility called PlainOldFavorites, and basically what it did was put a Favorites menu on the top toolbar, next to Tools and Help etc.

The neat thing about this was that I could add a favorite under it in Firefox and that favorite would then also show up in Internet Explorer Favorites. There was no need to add a favorite or a bookmark to Firefox, then open up IE and have to add the same favorite there. PlainOldFavorites did it automatically for you.

So I wanted to know, is there something similar for Opera? I also don't know much about the bookmarking system for Opera. Is there something built into that, that will do the same thing?

There were just a few other plugin items that concerned me while I have been thinking about this switch. I enjoy using StumbleUpon in Firefox, but they make no toolbar for Opera. I did however find an alternative, so I am covered there. This is what I guess I will be using:

http://www.operastumbler.com/

I was also hoping to find a Google toolbar for Opera, but after much searching, I found out there is nothing available for Opera YET. But apparently I understand that you can customize Opera's search for Google. Correct me if I am wrong about that.

Finally, I think I have also found some nice ad blockers for Opera. Here's some links for those:

http://operawiki.info/BlockAdvertisements
http://operawiki.info/OperaAdblock

So I think that covers all I need for now to get me started. Like I mentioned though, my main concern is finding a real nice favorite or bookmark syncing utility that hopefully will work as good as PLainOldFavorites does in Firefox.

I look forward to your comments.I was using IE7 up to a weeks ago and decided to try out Firefox, so I did. I've been using it since.

To be honest, I wouldn't change to Opera, because many new website features and technologies that are coming out aren't compatable with smaller browsers like Opera....

Now Opera isn't that "small" of a browser, but it's not as popular as Firefox, which obviously slows development of newer versions of Opera. If people really like a browser you created and it is popular, you are going to put more time into developing it.

That's another reason I like Firefox.... All the add-ons and features you can apply. I don't know of any add-ons for Opera.

In my opinion, one good thing about Opera is that it can display WAP and mobile websites.

Well, that's my lecture finished. kpac's right.

Firefox may not be the fastest but it sure is the safest. On the other hand Im gonna tryout OperaI've tried Opera....never got into it. Still an FF2 user. (No Broni, not FF3 )janlafata,On the subject of an alternative to a google tool bar you may want to check out the new search engine "CUIL" (pronounced cool). It has only been out about 1 week and is touted to be the best since sliced bread.i am using it but only on a manual demand BASIS. Supposed to be superior to Google.Don't know if they offer a tool bar option.truenorth

You sure you didn't revert to Internet Explorer 6?

What Operating System?

Why did you do a System Restore?I CHECKED in the change or remove programs channel,,, it said internet explorer 7, and the shortcut to it is the internet explorer shortcut... it's more glossy than the one of internet explorer 6.

Windows And it's a dell XPS.

A game wouldnt uninstall. When using System Restore, always 'undo' a restore point you picked before picking another restore point.

Also, System Restore is not a substitute for uninstalling programs.

FYI.... it did uninstall it though...I would reinstall it and then uninstall it properly. Quote from: Link01000 on August 06, 2008, 10:07:39 PM

Ah, but he didn't say it wouldn't install. If he gets it installed, we can find the problem and uninstall it correctly. Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on August 06, 2008, 11:09:00 PM

In response to the question: "Why did you do a System Restore," he ANSWERED, "A game wouldn't uninstall."

I merely pointed out that a System Restore is not a substitute for uninstalling programs.

If you want to suggest that he re-install the game in order to uninstall it, go for it. He's still got a problem with IE.THE GAME WOULDNT UNINSTALL PROPERLY!!! TAHTS WHY I DIto omD A SYS. RESTORE!!!  I hesitated to come to a forum cuz I was pretty sure my question would get off subject... and it did. I JUST WANT HELP!!!Whoa, easy there, hoss.  Flipping out and not making sense isn't going to move this along any faster.  These are just trying to help you...for FREE (would you rather go pay $50+ at GeekSquad?)...try to show a little patience.

Did you try reinstalling IE7?

It shouldn't be necessary, but you may want to backup your Favorites first.

Solve : Internet graphics are "stretched"?

Answer»

Hi,
I'm working in my Dell Latitude D820, and have an NVIDIA QUADRO NVS 110 installed.  It gives me overall great performance, but when it comes to web browsing, picturen on the internet always come our skewed or as if you stretched them.  As if the display was supposed to be for a normal screen, but you widened it to fit a widescreen.  If I SAVE an image from the internet and then open it with any other program, it comes out OK, it's only as I VIEW images online.
what can I do about this? What browser? VERSION?
WINDOWS version?I have WinXP Professional, Service Pack 2 version 2002.
The Browser is Internet Explorer 7 version 7.0.5730.11
cipher strength 128-bit (whatever that means)

Someone told me that I had to install something, like a driver or a codec or something for it to work properly, but I didn't have my computer with me at the time, so I didn't do it, and then I kinda forgot what he had told me... (shame on me, but I just don't understand the language sometimes...)DOWNLOAD, and install Firefox as cross reference, and see, if same thing happens.

AVG Go to Firefox from your START menu, from there you get two options
1)Mozilla Firefox
2)Mozilla Firefox (safe mode)

Select the second option and try checking your mail.

Also check your firewall settings and SEE if it is blocking that site. Quote from: Ivy on OCTOBER 09, 2008, 05:56:24 AM
