Solve : favorites don't work on Internet Explorer?

Answer»

I can no longer ACCESS my Favorites on IE and must go to DOCUMENTS on hard drive - and even then some won't open. When they do, a page opens, but not the site. How can I get it back Windows version, IE version?IE 7, VISTA, AVG antivirus, Ad-Aware, Ccleaner, Windows firewall
Error states that location is not available
Go Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, and click on Internet Explorer (no add-ons)
Can you access favorites now?Same problem. This time it only displays history but favorites are gone and still shows location is unavailable. Do I need to uninstall and reinstall, and if so, how do I do that. You can't uninstall IE in Vista.
Try this:
In IE, go Tools>Intrenet OPTIONS>ADVANCED tab, and click "Reset" button.
Restart computer.

Solve : youtube loading?

Answer»

hey I'm running vista and when ever i go on youtube and load a video it has to reload when i CLOSE the browser, the problem started when i put my computer though a registry cleaner.
thanks in advance juicebox Quote

it has to reload when i close the browser
Say again?sorry i should have been more clear...the video has to rebuffer everytime i go into it...I still don't understand "when i close the browser" part.I think he means when he goes to a video on youtube, it buffers and then it is loaded completely. Then, after you close the browser, when you go BACK to the same video you have to load the video again. It would be normal, wouldn't it? Yep.
Unless he is saving the video which is where i believe he's getting cornfused..."Corn" MAY be really confusing....heheheheThat happens to me too, its normal, you probably selected a video from the 2 or 3 videos they recommend you to watch out you finish watching the video you were initially watching.the video is on youtube's servers. so every time you go to youtube for the video, it will load (buffer) from youtube's servers. every time you close the browser, you have closed connection to youtube's servers.

So if a video online requires buffering, most likely it will be buffered every time you open a NEW browsing window and go to it.It ACTUALLY goes into your tempory files. Is it possible to download youtube vids?Yes.Many different ways too.

Solve : I cant get into certain websights?

Answer»

I have had a PROBLEM recently that I can not get into many websights. I use Yahoo for my email, I can get to the sign in page but no further, and even the main page does not display like it should. I have scanned my computer for virus and none have been found. I have reset my internet options per the basic internet explorer troubleshooting on this sight. I am using a wireless connection, and the signal is good.

I am running IE 6.0 I have installed 7.0 but then I couldn't get to the internet at all, so I had to restore back to 6.0.

Not sure what to do next??

Any help would be appreciated... Try this.

Click Start > Run and copy and paste the following line into the run BOX:
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
Press OK
Once it is completed you will get this message DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded, repeat the above steps, but replace regsvr32 urlmon.dll with the following: (enter each line one at a time selecting OK after each)

  • regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
  • regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
  • regsvr32 mshtml.dll
  • regsvr32 browseui.dll
  • regsvr32 jscript.dll
  • regsvr32 vbscript.dll
  • regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
.
Restart the PC and try to go to the sutes.Might be a Good idea to start using Firefox, don`t make it your default browser until happy with it...believe me you will not be disappointed.I've tried both suggestions, Thank You, however, they didn't work. This is real strange, It was suggested that I might have to get rid of everything on my computer and start over. I realy don't want to do this but I have tried everything I know to do.

Any other suggestions!!! Try rebooting the modem and router.

Turn your modem off...then your router.

Wait approximately 30 seconds...then turn your router back on.

Let your router recycle itself...usually takes a few seconds, but give it 30, as well.

Turn on your modem. When all lights are green...try connecting to the internet again.

Keep us posted...Also...try clearing your internet cache, as well.only certain WEBSITES means u can go for opera or mozilla firefox, because some plugin willbe MISSING in I E 6.0 ,better try itDown load and run spybot search and DESTROY: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

If that does not solve your problem, if it was me I would uninstall all fragments of Yahoo and see if that is your problem. What type of web pages you can't access? Give us some examples.

Solve : Firefox Icon Packs...?

Answer»

Do you EVER get tired of your default Firefox icons?

If so, you may want to VISIT the following page for more information: Iconpacks

The process requires you download two software programs...along with the iconpack, but if you follow the directions...you'll have your default icons changed in no time.

Have you ever run across a situation where Windows has replaced your Firefox default HTML DOCUMENT icon (saved to your desktop)?

One of the software packages the above tutorial requires you to download is a SHAREWARE program called ItweakU. This program allows you to restore the default desktop icons with the click of a button.

A very handy tool...and highly recommended by me.

Hopefully, you've found the above tutorial handy...

Happy icon packing! Some more info on missing icons . . . I had this trouble which was what led to Saviour discovering the icon packs.
You may want to take a look - http://www.saviourpc.com/forums/index.php?topic=114 - if you've got missing icons too.

Solve : Firefox and IE desktop links don't link to anything?

Answer»

My friend lost his desktop links so I told him I knew how to get them back. They were there, but they would not TAKE him to the page they were set to take him to.

I deleted them and WENT to the page he wanted and slid the address icon over to the desk TOP, bit no mater what page icon I slid over, clicking on it did not take me to the page.

What would prevent desktop icons from linking to the page they were set to link to?

Solve : iNTERNET SPEEDS?

Answer»

My download speed is very good, however my upload speed is very slow. Any clue as to cause of problem??ISP's deliberately throttle back upload SPEEDS...
CHECK with them if you need more and pull out the wallet...Not to hijack this THREAD, but since we're on the topic...

We have a thread on my forum REGARDING this topic: http://www.saviourpc.com/forums/index.php/topic,24.0.html

Those with broadband connections seem to have their download and upload info displayed correctly...while those on dial up will show their upload speeds to be faster than their download speeds...which is not normally the case...since the downline should have less noise, thus increased speed.

One of our users...seemed to think it was a "glitch", however...I had one of the users test it at different intervals...and he still reports around the same speeds.

With a dial up connection, these speeds, to me, seem incorrect.

Has anyone else dealt with a similar situation when using these speed tests with a dial up connection?Quote from: MARRON on May 31, 2008, 08:58:50 AM

My download speed is very good, however my upload speed is very slow. Any clue as to cause of problem??
What type of Internet access are we talking here? dialup, DSL, cable? If DSL, what is your download and upload speed supposed to be, per your ISP? What are your actual speeds?I like the new Avatar Soybean ! !

Solve : checking deleted emails??

Answer»

I have some COMPUTER experience but my SON is smarter than me...we both have yahoo email accounts. My son deletes all his email and sent mail, then clears private data on our Linux Ubuntu system (LIKE a good kid should). My question: is there a way for me to "re-instate" his deleted emails? (like a good father should checking on the safety of my son" I know his user name/pw. I am system administrator. And i am not afraid to install any programs for Linux but i would prefer he not know that I am "spying" on him. Any help would be appreciated...p.s. if it helps I am using mozilla firefox...I'm afraid, if he deleted his inbox and private data, the emails are irretrievable.
...Unless someone on the forums knows something I don't...Ditto. How old is your son, anyway?Quote

And i am not afraid to install any programs for Linux but i would prefer he not know that I am "spying" on him. Any help would be appreciated...

Seeing this is a security issue that may cross some boundaries i have reservations on giving this TYPE of advice.

Sorry.

I'm tempted to close this but we'll wait and see.my son is 16...i am 35...if there seems to be security issues...then could one guide me to information that i could read up on this myself? There are a million people on the internet willing to give free advice, including "hackers"... If I wanted to jeopardize something I could have hit a hack site first... I wanted to see if a site with validity could offer some suggestions first...If moderators don't want to post fearing misuse...then please email me directly - ****

I want to view my son's email being concerned about illegal graduation parties and references to drug use. I know my child is 100% clean of drugs but I would like to watch out for the ones that are not!

Solve : Yahoo mail in TB?

Answer»

Well here's an update. I downloaded Yahoo-mail 1-3-4b33 and installed it. Didn't seem to do much. But then I switched on the Yahoo page to the Classic view, and the "negative vibes" error went away. I got ONE email then, but now again nothing since. Now when I switch from new Yahoo mail back to Classic Mail down in the status bar it says "host contacted Sending login information" The It'll say "DOWNLOADING 1of 1 MESSAGE". Then I get an error that the server localhost timed out. I get no message.
I can send messages without a problem.
Go figure. Anybody know of a good shrink? I think I'm going to have to talk this out soon. My head feels like it's going to explode.
I wish I could just let it go. Thanks for listening.
FloydDo you have anti-virus software running all the time? If so, which one?

I seem to recall from that google group, that some posters there were having trouble with some virus SCANNERS blocking their email now, and that this is something new.
Did you catch those comments there?

Willy, I use AVG and it seems to be no problem. I have tried to turn off the email scanner earlier and there was no difference.
Good thought though.

Ok.

Other than noticing your above, "...But then I switched on the Yahoo page to the Classic view, and the "negative vibes" error went away. I got one email then, but now again nothing since. ..."
seems to be backwards from what I would expect, I don't know what else to recommend.
I would have expected it to stop with the negative vibes when you switched
from the Classic view with the "Upgrade to the all-new Yahoo..."

When it is configured properly, it seems to work ok here.

You said you got "nothing since". This may sound silly, but was there more new mail there to get?

YesThe only time I get a "time-out" error is when I try to download a message that has an attachment, and the size of the attachment is greater than 5Mb.

Maybe that's why you get a time-out error? Thanks Astoria, but it was only a couple of CHARACTERS I sent in an email to myself for a test.

Solve : cant login in to my yahoo mail?

Answer»

I cant LOGIN into my yahoo mail it says page cant be display.Which browser are you using? Internet explorer or Firefox? Is it the Login Page, Inside Yahoo Mail or just Yahoo.com in general?Go to This link and Tell me if you can at LEAST see your mail ,It lets you work with some basic mail functions. Go ahead!

Did you try the link given above?ALSO you should do this, try to Clear your browser's cache
1)For that you need to Close the mail page
2)Click START > Control Panel > Internet Options (or on Internet Explorer toolbar click Tools > Internet Options) and delete Cookies, Temporary Internet Files, and History.

If you are using new Yahoo mail , you should switch back to classic mail for now

Go to this page -->Here, at the top of the page there's the option "Do you really want to opt out?", click Yes and you will be switched back to Yahoo! Mail Classic.

Try this much first

Solve : Browsers gag on Google?

Answer»

A few days ago all three BROWSERS on my deskktop computer lost the ability to access Google web search or Google image search. Otherwise, they operate normally. I can access Google.com, and when I'm there can open G news, G video, G maps etc etc -- but when I try for web or image search the page freezes.

I have done most of the things that Google recommends when access is difficult -- cleared caches, cleared DNS, checked host folder, installed and ran spypot, to no effect. The only success was when I opened Windows in safe molde, and found all three browsers worked as they should. But I don't know how to PUT that information to work.

The computer is a Vaio desktop, RX755, running XP Home with service pack two. x86 CPU, 1024 MB memory. The browsers are Moz Firefox 2004, my FAVE; Opera 9.2 as backup, and IE7 that came with Windows and I don't know how to get rid of.

With all three browsers failing in the same WAY at the same time I suspect that some service that they all depend on has failed. I updated Java, but that wasn't it.

Any ideas will be gratefully studied.Download HijackThis:

Solve : Deleting Internet Explorer Address Bar URLs that aren't in typed~urls?

Answer»

I have tried to delete all URL addresses using the internet options menu button "Clear History," all URLS that I personally have ever entered do disappear, BUT, ever since I bought this computer, there have been STRANGE url addresses (that I can't even read, I live in Japan and they are in Japanese), about 15 of them. I thought my Japanese wife had looked up these URL addresses, but she insists she never did. Are these some companies that have paid the computer company to permanently put their addresses into the url address bar? I have tried the regedit.exe routine to delete them, but only my own URL look-ups are listed.

Can someone help me get rid of these MYSTERY URL addresses? Thanks a million.
I have Internet Explorer version 6.0 Is it possible you can give us a Screenshot of what these URLs look like?

Try this:

DOWNLOAD and INSTALL CCleaner and get it to run the cleaner.
If you want, you can uncheck everything but items for Internet Explorer and run the cleaner.

See if this gets rid of the URLs.

Solve : Adobe Flash Plug Ins-Need help!!?

Answer»

Hope I'm in the right place and I'm a beginner and I mean a real beginner. So please be patient with me. I want to view a site, vitals.com which gives info and rates doctors. I can get on the site but can only get so far. When I inquired I was advised to make sure my browser soft ware was up-to-DATE and to install the latest version of Adobe Flash-plug ins. They gave me the site, abobe.com/shockwave, etc., etc. I was able to download but unable to open. The indication is: Firefox (my browser) must be closed before Adobe plug in can be installed. I don't know what this means so therefore I don't know how to do this. Could someone explain this to me in an easy to understand manner? Thank you. PS-Also don't know how to determine if browser software is up-to-date. Now you know inexperienced I am but feel vitals.com is a good site for me and I want to be able to use it.To close Firefox, click on "X" in right upper corner of Firefox:

To see, if Firefox is up to date, click Help, then Check for updatesIs there not a notification BAR under the Address Bar telling you to download plug-ins and what not?Where's the page(s) that require Flash? I VISITED the site and made an inquiry to get a list of Otolaryngologists within 15 miles. I SAW no page using Flash.

To verify that you have Flash installed, and what version, go to http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/ and click on Version test for Adobe Flash Player, part way down the page, under Top Issues. On vitals.com - I was trying to get to the page where people would COMMENT on their doctors. There is a line that says Patients Rating and Comments - view details or reviews on bottom left of page. When I click that - the next page is just a graph - not individual comments. I know you can read them as my niece is able to. In fact, the doctor I was looking up - a Dr. Karakashian in Sea Girt, NJ - had 64 comments - he's a skin doctor. I want to see what people have to say.

As mentioned when I emailed Vitals the told me to install flash plug in - I checked Adobe support as just advised and it is installed and firefox browser is up-to-date.

Of course when I shut down firefox - the computer goes back to the first screen where all programs are listed.

I do not see a notification bar - just the space where I type in the web site I want. But as mentioned in my original question Adobe was telling me that browser had to be closed before plug in could be installed. But when I checked today it is installed!! That's the part I didn't understand. As you can see this is not earth shattering and I thank everyone for trying to help. I must be missing something.

Presently i have 256 ram , .8 processor , and i am not able to get the full SPEED.What kind of internet connection do you have?
your download speed won't outright say that you're getting 512kbps, it will most likely say something an eighth of that like 64KBps. That's because ISPS are talking in kilobits, and BROWSERS use kilobytes. When you download something, do you get that speed? or a lot slower?u can also check your speed at www.speedtest.net
it is of course displayed in kbps

Did Outlook print problem start about the same time as IE, and OE problems? What anti virus are you running? Reason I asked about anti virus is I have been reading about some issues with norton and IE 7 printing.Norton VIA the
AOL programTry this: Exit any email programs that are running, such as Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express.
2 Start Norton AntiVirus.
If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.
3 Click Options.
If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.
4 In the left pane, click Email.
5 In the right pane, uncheck Scan incoming Email and Scan outgoing Email.
6 Click OK.
7 If you use Norton AntiVirus 2006/2005, then in the Protection ALERT dialog box, on the drop-down menu, click Permanently, and then click OK.
8 Exit Norton AntiVirus.
Also turn off anti spam: Under norton anti spam click status & settings, click anti spam, click turn off. Reboot and see if problem persists.
so far no luck, tried top go w/o Norton as recommended, did not change anything.
my problems must be connected to IE and MS because OE 2003 (Part of MS Office)
and OUTLOOK EXPRESS and IE are all MS products and, you guessed it, when you try an email link it opens IE (even if I run the Firefox Browser). So I figured I try the new and improved AOL Explorer. It downloaded and installed but when you try to get to it " service temporarily not available". Emailed MS they are not helpful
(try this site or that or call the vendor which sold this product) Cannot even download over IE the download gets lost no dialog box ETC. And no I cannot seem to delete IE7 either, there is no link in the software install/'delete for IE7.

thanks fo sending me the link.....

however I am still no further from solving my problem

there should be an answer from some of your experts to explain why I can print my emails if I can bring them up on the Firefox browser (Example, when I run Gmail it will print because it is running under my firefox browser) and why I cannot print when the output ( be it mail such as outlook or AOL, or this what I am typing right now) is coming over MS IE the fact is that any links seem to open automatically using IE
and therefore not printable. Yes I can work my way around it, but this is not the solution.

Contacting MS, was , as I mentioned before, an exercise in futility. I recall that at one time that MS would send a recommendation which actually helped... now???Your posts have numerous inaccuracies, making it difficult to decipher your comments. Quote from: Jens on May 29, 2008, 02:15:33 PM

There is no "OE 2003". If you mean Outlook 2003, please say Outlook, not OE or Outlook Express.

... I use IE Version 7.0 (cannot print) Outlook Express Version 6 (bundled with ATT DSL package) also have outlook 2003 (MS Office) which now also does not want to print email
Outlook Express is not bundled with ATT DSL package. It's bundled with Internet Explorer; it's been bundled with IE, starting way back with Windows 95 and continuing all the way through Windows XP.

Quote from: Jens on May 23, 2008, 05:01:20 AM
...same thing applies when I run Outlook Express or AOL (part of ATT DSL)
And, why is AOL "part of ATT DSL" here? I know a few people who have ATT DSL and they do not use AOL. They do not need AOL.

IE7 can be deleted via Add or Remove Programs. But, I do not recommend doing that; I don't think it would solve your problem. Beside, IE7 is a more secure browser than IE 6.

You say clicking on a email link open OE. Open IE, click on Tools, Internet Options, Programs, and see what program is selected for E-mail. If OE, that explains why OE opens when an email link is clicked on.

It seems to me your whole email and browser scenario is more complicated than necessary. Why are you using AOL when you have ATT and also an Gmail account? Dump AOL and dump their software.

Regarding email, you've mentioned OE, Outlook, IE, Firefox, and AOL's "browser". ATT and Gmail can both be received with a POP email client such as OE. Do you have a particular reason for using both webmail and POP email clients such as OE and Outlook? Why not pick one method of doing email, such as OE, and then focus on getting that to work?I am sorry you are confused. I would not use Gmail if outlook express would print.
as far as AOL and ATT DSL is concerned... when I purchased DSL from then bellsouth, it was marketed as a package deal (get this and we trow in free AOL etc and yes
the outlook express version 6 did come with this DSL package. ) outlook 2003, well I have MS Office 2003 which comes with Outlook)

Bottom line, Outlook Express and Outlook used to print
as far as removing Internet Explorer version 7.0, no this computer does NOT let you
remove it and yes I tried the add/ delete program
to make it plain and simple Outlook Express is where I receive most of my email in
AOL used to be my primary email account, since I cannot print AOL email or Outlook
or Outlook Express email I added G mail so that I can send the email I want to print
to my Gmail and print it.

You did not answer my question, what causes IE (internet explorer) and Outlook
and Outlook Express not to print, while I can print from the Firefox browser and G mail
(not MS products)

yes they all used to work fine at one time, however....

Solve : screen flashes when page loads in IE 7?

Answer»

Hello all,

I UPLOADED a web site yesterday and tested it in several different BROWSERS. Firefox, safari, opera, and IE 6 are all FINE, however, when I loaded the site in IE 7, there was this wierd flash. It looked like a black triangle coming down from the top right of the screen. When you click on the links in the page and the new page LOADS, it does it again. Everything else is fine.

Wondering if any of you have seen or heard of this behavior.

Responses are greatly appreciated.

Solve : internet explorer shuts down all open windows?

Answer»

When I close smaller windows, (anything from enlarged photos on a shopping site, TO the inactivity window that pops up on my online banking site) every window closes down to my Juno TOOLBAR. Even my juno homepage shuts down. I am not kicked off the internet, just off of every open page!? Thought it was a problem with Juno, but NO! People PC had the same problem. It is only on MY computer, NOT my husbands Laptop. I am running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 with Internet Explorer 7.0. PLEASE CAN ANYONE HELP?
I was having the same problem...I never figured out how to get it to stop doing that. I ENDED up just DOWNLOADING Mozilla Firefox and now I use that instead of Internet Explorer. Thanks! That's exactly what I started to do a few days ago, but I have Dial-up & it was taking too long. Guess I will download Mozilla Firefox when I have more time. Thanks again!

...but I have Dial-up & it was taking too long. ...

Check out Free Download Manager.
Allows you to stop a download, then resume it later.
Perfect for large downloads when using dial-up.

Or have someone you know with a HIGH speed connection GRAB it for you and throw it on a flash drive...

Solve : Can't watch videos online...?

Answer»

Every time I try to watch a video on the internet(via youtube or whatever else) the page stops responding and the internet completely stops WORKING and the computer has to be restarted before it will work again. I have tried using both Internet Explorer and Firefox and it does the same with both. I have AVG Anti-Virus and when I run the scanner it doesn't come up with any viruses. Does anyone know what the PROBLEM is?What version of Windows are you using?
When did this problem start?

backup your bookmarks, uninstall Firefox and delete the hidden Profiles folder, reboot and reinstall Firefox.

C:\Documents and Settings \ [User Name] \ Application Data \ Mozilla \ Firefox \ Profiles\

Tony I have windows XP
and it started a week or two ago...i'm not sure exactly when because i share the computer with my younger sister and she is the one who first noticed the problem.

and what is the hidden Profiles folder?Tony how will this solve the issue ? ?
It is happening in both BROWSERS which would suggest it's not a browser issue...I thought there might have been damaged files upon install , so i assumed installing firefox again
might of done the trick ..... ops

Tony If your using Internet Explorer, the option of watching videos might be disabled. Try going to Tools>Internet Options>Advance> Scroll Down to Mutimedia and check the "Play Animation in webpages" if that does work then try the "Restore Advance Settings" in the Advance Tab.What type of Internet connection is this ? ?I've been using Firefox and I believe its a DSL connection. I downloaded Firefox because when i was using internet explorer the internet would STOP working whenever i tried to close a webpage.Have you tried unplugging the router/modem for 30 seconds and re-booted the machine when this happens ? ?
If it is DSL you need to have DSL filters on every phone jack in the dwelling. We have one other desktop and a laptop in the house and they both work fine so i'm not sure that would do very much...i'm not exactly sure that the internet is DSL...all I know is that we got it from Verizon, I asked my mom but she said that she doesn't know either(she should since she's the one who BOUGHT it!) We use wireless network adapters for the desktops and when the internet stops working i tried to disconnect and then reconnect the internet connection but it always tells me that there was an error...I think it has something to do with a "cache" something or other...I would try it right now but then I would lose the internet connection and have to restart the computer and I don't have the patience for that right now...

(This isn't really malicious, but it's considered foistware, which is misleading and probably not something you want. You don't have to get rid of it, but I would advise tdong that.

Once you've done all of this, reboot into Normal Mode and post a new HijackThis log so we can see if there's any other junk we need to clean up. Let me know how everything's running now and if you had any problems following my steps. My start toolbar no longer disapears, I haven't SEEN any targeted pop-ups, but I do get an error message on one website that says "a script on this page is causing your computer to run slowly, would you like to continue running it" if I click yes my internet crashes, when I click no it's fine, it's not really a problem because I can just click no

Let me know if this helps at all. This thread would be impossible to read even on a wide screen TV.....Everything works great now, the message doesn't come up anymore

Thanks for the help. Thanks for the update. Did you follow the instructions in my latest post?

Before wrapping things up, you should get a firewall. You're vulnerable without a firewall, so you should look into getting either ZoneAlarm, Kerio Personal Firewall, or Comodo. They're all good free firewalls. Just be sure you only have one installed at a time! Download the firewall of your choice, disconnect from the internet, disable Windows Firewall, and install your new firewall.

Solve : Media Event sink window stalls?

Answer»

I use WMP 11 on my xp system. Whenever I download a wmv from my browser
( FIREFOX). It will play fine, but when I go to download another file WMP won't open and there is nothing SHORT of rebooting that will fix it. When I do shut down windows I get this "Media EVENT sink window not responding message" I can then "end now" and windows will close. This has been very frustrating and I have done a google search on solutions. It is apparently a frequent problem but the solution has been elusive. Most say to reinstall WMP 11 or switch to version 9. I did the reinstall but am having a hard time finding version 9 anymore online. If I could, I'd prefer not using WMP , is there an alternative to PLAYING wmv ffiles or is there a solution to this problem?

Thanks

Solve : INTERNET CONNECTION HELP??

Answer»

Hey GUYS im having a real pain in the behind problem with my internet connection..

when i turned my computer on it gave me an error message saying a file was missing, so i reinstalled windows and formatted it, not knowingly

It worked fine after.. but i couldnt connect to the internet.
I didnt do anything with my modem or router to mess up the internet connection.. but it wont connect.

Someone told me it could be because i lost some of my drivers.. because my computer doesnt have sound now either..

how do i FIX this problem?

ThanksTry re-installing your MOTHERBOARD drivers from the CD that came with the machine...if onboard DEVICES are being used this may solve both the internet ISSUE and the sound at the same time...
It will be labeled as a driver CD not an OS CD.

Solve : This one has me completely stumped. I Can't get links at excite.com to load.?

Answer»

Well, they will load but it takes forever. No other sites I visit have this problem but get this, the excite links load just fine on my Vista and Win 98 machines. All three machines are routed to a cable connection.

I thought that this page lag problem might just be an IE-6 thing but the same thing happens when I try to load excite links from the latest version for FireFox on my XP.

This browser problem started about two weeks ago and I thought Excite was just having problems. Now after testing this out on my other two computers, I think the problem is somewhere in my XP system. I have no idea what would cause such a delay for only one web-site. BTW - Excite is my homepage in IE but Google is my homepage in FireFox.

Has anyone ENCOUNTERED a similar problem and found a fix for it?

Thanks,

PeteDouble-check your IE security settings...Your response got me thinking about pop-up blockers. I use two and Excite has always used pop-up ads. I disabled both and also changed the setting in IE to disable pop-up blocking as well. I clicked an Ecite link and immediately got a pop-up ad but the page link would still not load for several minutes. It was worth a shot but since the problem is also with FireFox, it would have to be some setting both browsers have set in common. Unfortunately there are so many these days, it's hard to tell what's going on. What I did next was to RESET the IE security settings to the default but still no change.

I don't believe in 15 years of being on the Internet I have ever seen such a strange problem as this one. Since it is happening on only one site and with both browsers and only on one computer out of three I think something is interfering with page loading only when excite.com is loaded into the browser. I don't know if that would be a registry problem, a trojan. or something entirely different.

Any other ideas?

Pete What pop-up programs are you using ? ?

They could very well be the villians here.I disabled both of my popup blockers (One is from Cox.net) and turned off pop-up blocking in my IE browser as well when this problem started. I thought that might be the problem, too but it wasn't. It is interesting to note that sites like ninjaproxy and proxyboss bounce right off Excite.com and return to the proxy serer. (Someone suggested I try the site with a proxy and see if it helped.) Anyway, that non-proxy-acceptance happens on the computers that access Excite pages just fine so the proxy issue is not apparently related.

I thought about that annoying Adobe update for flash that pops up every so often but it should show itself. That would slow page loading down, as it usually won't allow a page to finish loading until responded to.

I hope it doesn't turn out to be some virus, trojan, or worm. I've ran some anti-bad-stuff routines and removed Nilage, Trymedia, and DLSearchbar. Now the system appears to be clean; however, removing those three programs did not make any difference to the page loading problem with Excite.com I haven't tried running any 'root' anti-malware routines yet. I might redo a hijack this log next.

Still puzzled over this one but thanks for the replies,

Pete
Feel free to post a HijackThis log and include a list of all the anti-malware apps you have ran...but i believe the issue is excite.Hijack this log looked OK to me, but I'm certainly not an expert. I'm not sure why it posted...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe

...twice, one with a lowercase "S" and the next with a capital "S" because they are the same file, oh well.

The C:\Program Files\Common Files\Command Software\dvpapi.exe
is associated with Cox security suite.

I use Cox and HAE used Spybot SD and Adaware SE in the past. I may update the files in both of those and give them a try.

Anyway, here is what I think is a clean log on my XP with SP2:

Solve : Internet will not open new windows?

Answer»

I am USING Internet Explorer 6. When I click on a link or try to open a second window of IE, the first window GETS closed down, and the new window will not allow me to go "back" to the first one. How can I have more than one IE window open at the same time??? I have disabled the "reuse windows" button on the tools - options menu.I'd either upgrade to IE7 or better YET, use Firefox. Both have the "tabs" options that will eliminate your PROBLEM but Firefox, IMHO, is a better browser. Get it here:

Solve : IE 7 with Vista refuses to refresh pages!?

Answer»

IE 7 on Vista absolutely refuses to reload NEW versions of web pages, or updates to web pages. It's LIKE they are COMPLETELY stuck in the cache. Clearning all history and cache does not even help. Updates to pages are STILL not shown.

Can SOMEONE please tell me how to rectify this problem?

Solve : Firefox Crashing my Laptop?

Answer» OKAY, I've had Firefox for a while. And everytime it comes out with an update, it MAKES me install it ( well, automatically) and whenever I start it up. My MONITOR turns black and I can't do anything until I remove the battery.

Now, everytime I download it, and try to install all of Firefox, my computer crashes again.

What should I do, to download/install Firefox and keep it from crashing my laptop?I DOUBT FireFox is the issue here...list a bunch more info on the machine OS what protection you have and what else changed since this started and the POSSE will be along shortly.I really think you have corrupted the installation you MIGHT be better to uninstall Firefox, and then reinstall the latest version which is Firefox 2.0.0.6

Solve : Need help with internet problems?

Answer»

Can someone out there please tell me whats wrong with my computer. Whenever we try to log into any sites that you must log into such as Yahoo mail, hotmail, my ebay etc the PAGE is coming up blank and says done also has this message http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=yahoo+mail&meta
and then will proceed to come up as cannot find server. Internet is working for every other site? Not ure if its related but this started after our son installed photoshop? This happened to me too.
Even when i try to log on to MSN messenger, facebook, ebay or hotmail it wont let me.
Im still waiting for help on my question =)
what browser are you using?

if it is Internet Explorer check that all SECURITY settings are at least "medium"

CLICK tools/internet options/ security/ then each of the four items "internet" "local Network" "Trusted sites" "Restricted sites"

you could set "privacy" to default then gradually up the security as you see fit.

anything above medium can MAKE it harder for some sites to open, but anything below is making it easy for trouble to HAPPEN as the security will be open to any web hacks etc to get into your computer.

Solve : IE7 - certificate problems?

Answer»

I'm on a closed network and often need to access a networked kvm switch (Raritan) via IE7. Problem is, every time I enter in the IP ADDRESS of the switch, IE7 tells me there's a problem with the WEBSITE's security CERTIFICATE. I really don't care if IE7 checks for certificates or any other security thing because I'm on a closed network, but I can't figure out how to turn off the checking.
Does anyone know how to do this?try this:-
in IE7 select tools/ then INTERNET options/ then security/ then custom level and go down the list until you see " Don't prompt for clients certificate selection when no certificate is available" move the dot from disable into the enable Changed the option and STILL getting the same message.Try contacting the hardware vendor for an updated certificate.

Solve : Lost ability to get into aol.com?

Answer»

Last night, I updated my Mozilla Foxfire browser and suddenly I can't get onto aol.com, which is my main web mail (I've been an AOL since 1995 because my wife liked it). Now that we have DSL, we've stayed with AOL as our main mail. The browser tries loading the page, but will time out and suggests an inability to get on the SERVER. I tried different browsers -- IE and MSN Explorer -- and succeeded with MSN Explorer, until the following morning when MSN did the same thing as my other browsers. I'd like to use the opportunity to bail from my AOL address, but I need to export my contacts. Unfortunately, I need to be on AOL in order to do that.

xkathLOL - "Because my wife liked it."

Yeah, women, whatareyagonnado?

I think AOL is just updating there site. These updates can affect different browsers DIFFERENTLY. I was able to go to aol.com this morning in IE, no problemo. Now, I have to take a shower. But KIDDING aside, it should work for you by now.

BTW - You COULD try to get there from the command line if you're using a Windows XP.

1) Open your command line.

2) Type cd\

3) Type cmd /C start www.aol.com

...and press enter.

That will start your default browser and send it to aol.

Solve : Weird title bar headings for Internet Explorer. Help please!?

Answer»

Hello,

Usually when I GO to a website, the title BAR of my Internet Explorer will say what site I am on (if I go to bn.com, the title bar will say Barnes and Nobles store...etc) but now instead of saying the site titles, the title bar only has random LETTERS like "h", "l", etc.

Please help me resolve this.

Thanks!Windows or MAC?
version of IE?

Jonas And what protection do you have?

Without any other info to go on, my first guess would be a BROWSER hijacker. Go ahead and post a HijackThis log.Do you see a single letter, which happens to be the first letter of the web page name?

Have you got Google Toolbar? If so, try uninstalling it, and rebooting.

Solve : Netscape MySQL Error?

Answer»

Hi, I am trying to help out one of my father's friends with a computer problem he is having. He told me that everytime he TRIES to open Netscape7 it will not load the browser and just throws up two errors. He read them off to me and this is what they are:

Warning, MySQL CONNECT function.MySQL-connect cannot connect to local MySQL Server through
socket '/var/lib/MySQL/MySQL.sock'(2) in
/data/servers/www_netscape_com/htdocs.070808.3517/lib/php/sqldatabase.php on line 338

and

warning, MySQL_error(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL_link resource in
/data/servers/www_netscape_com/htdocs.070808.3517/lib/php/sqldatabase.php on line 341

I would just tell him to update to the newest version of netscape, but he uses the email program on there and will not go to a different email program or use a web based email. I had a difficult enough time getting him to upgrade from Windows98 to WindowsXP and buy a cheapo computer that would run it when his Win98 machine crapped out. Then, I managed to get him to upgrade from dial-up, but he didn't go to cable like I suggested and WENT with DSL, which our provider in the area for DSL is horrible, so more headaches there. I know I will not be able to get him to switch without me helping him for a good six hours or more and numerous phone calls.

I have been looking online all day for an answer to this problem and I find the same error all over the place, but it is not in help forums, it is just on pages where someone used PHP improperly. I really don't understand how that could have anything to do with a browser not loading correctly unless the browser was corrupted. Thanks to anyone that tries to help.Is this on every page?
When exactly does it happen? It happens when he tries to open a netscape window. It happens before it tries to load a page.OK, try reinstalling Netscape.do you know where I can get Netscape 7? He uses the email program on that and the newer versions do not have the email program.http://browser.netscape.com/downloads/archive/Thanks, that should do the trick. I NEVER knew about that site. Thanks again. I will go install that as soon as I can. You're welcome, it was just the first search result when I searched for Netscape 7 download.
Hope it helps. Thanks for the help, but it didn't work. When I went over to look at it I tried Netscape and the browser opened and I could still access the mail program, both unlike what I was told. The only thing that was the same as what I was told were the errors. I could still use the browser to look at any other sites, just not the Netscape homepage. Any other Netscape page I went to worked, but the homepage did not. I was actually able to pull up the netscape homepage on Internet Explorer. I wish people would give correct info when they ask for computer help. He told me after I had brought to his attention that he lied to me and his excuse was "Well, I openend it and SAW those errors and didn't try anything more." Argh. Well, thanks for your help anyways. One last thing, if anyone happens to know how this could happen, he is constantly losing all of his bookmarks in his browsers. When I check the files where the bookmarks are stored they are still there, but he keeps getting rid of them only while the browser is open. He doesn't have a clue as to how it happens.

Solve : How Do You Get IE7 To Always Have Full Menus?

Answer»

Hello All, I use XP SP2 with Outlook. It's easy to set "show full menus" in Outlook. Yet, I cannot figure out how to get IE7 to do this. I realize this is a minor question, but it's bugging the heck out of me. Thanks so much for any assistance anyone can offer. We-3-Maine/iacs. By "Show full menus", do you mean that your favorites menu is always short and that you have to CLICK on an arrow to show all your favories? If not, then please explain the problem again. I did not quite understand it.Just rightclick the toolbar and choose menu barDear Comp Guy, Although my reply is a long time coming, I still have the same problem "Just As You Described It." Any suggestions.Just go to "Tools", then "Internet Options", and then click on the "Advanced" tab. From there just scroll down and uncheck the box next to "ENABLE personalized favorites menu".THANK you Comp Guy. I am constantly trying to learn about computer hardware, SOFTWARE, programs, etc. But, I have to tell you; although this worked perfectly I do not understand why. WELL, computers can do that. You have a fine day. Take care, Rick
