Solve : IE 6.0 help, desktop shortcut opens Internet Properties menu?

Answer»

Hello everyone, was hoping someone COULD give me hand with this. I am USING IE 6.0 on a Dell Inspiron 2200 Laptop. When I attempt to open IE from the DESKTOP shortcut or from the start menu it takes me directly to the internet properties menu, but when open an IE link that is a shortcut to say 'Lords of Magic homepage' it opens fine. Can anyone offer some assistance, thank you.

JayRight click on IE shortcut, click Properties, then Shortcut tab. What does it say in Target field?Right click on IE shortcut, which of the menu choices is in bold?Answer for Bronis' question, in the target field it says internet in shaded letters. Maybe i should mention this first, my big blue e shortcut has changed to globe. Answer for the second question is when i right click the shortcut Internet Properties is in bold.Your IE shortcut may be corrupted...
BTW...How can you go right click>Properties>Shortcut tab, since you are saying "Properties" under right click is grayed out?
Also, what Windows version are you on?Also, what do you mean by "internet properties menu"? Do you mean Internet Options menu?I am usinsg windows xp, when i single right click on the shortcut along with copy, cut, delete etc... Internet Properties is bold. That was in reply to feds question.
When i follow your instructions Broni, the target field is occupied by the word internet, but it the word is grey not flat black, in other words it will not allow me to change it.Two things:

1) Make sure you have the latest "high priority" updates installed...as they pertain to your operating SYSTEM...by vising Windows Update.

2) Open Control Panel/Internet Options...click the Advanced tab...click the Restore deafults button...save your settings by clicking OK and/or Apply.

Keep us posted...Another thing to try...
In Windows Explorer, navigate to Program Files>Internet Explorer, double click on "iexplore.ex", and see if IE will open.

Solve : Problems with IE 7 addon?

Answer»

I have a Pentium 4, 1.8 Ghz, 720 Megs Ram computer, I use Windows XP SP2.

I RECENTLY tried to install the My Del.ecio.us addon to IE 7 and it has caused erros in IE now I am not sure how to fix it. the file I downloaded was "del.icio.us buttons - 1.2.1 -fx.xpi" It had good reviews on the addon site http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/category.aspx?bcatid=834&tabid=1/default.aspx (It is no longer in the reccomended DOWNLOADS section, and I can't find it now), but wouldn't install properly, as it made IE 7 crash every time I tried to install it.

Now IE 7 runs sluggishly and when I exit the program I get two errror messages:

"The exception unknown software exception (0x0eedfade) occurred in the application at location 0x7c812a5b"

and

"Runtime error 217 at 02C6FD29"

Any help would be appreciated.

Brucexpi, I believe is for firefox extensions.

However, try disabling all add-ons in IE7 and try again to run it. If not working still, try going to the control PANELS option where you can add/remove programs and click on the IE7 item and repair it if that's available. If you get a FireFox extension to run properly on IE7 don't tell anyone and send a message to Microsoft in Redmond Washington...you could stand to get a financial windfall from this ...Well, I started mucking around with disabling and enabling the addons, as elxr06 suggested, but I think my method was abit more chaotiic than intended, and the problem SEEMS to be solved. Thanks.

Bruceif your problem has been solved, then that is great

Never mind child you have youtube. maybe if you have software, you can save the files to your computer; you need some software that can save flash files. i've seen it before, but just search google and it'll COME up. that is if you want movies.

for software, do what they tell you. sometimes i USE free trial or shareware, for which i find that has no restrictions other than maybe ad appears when opening software or something like that...

Also, there's this popup that runs in fullscreen and it keeps opening every now and then (Picture attached as WELL - 3.jpg)

Tried updating windows, tried upgrading the Internet Explorer from v6 to the latest one available. Tried a couple of anti virus along with spyware DOCTOR, spybot, registry mechanic but invain.

p.s: Don't recommend an alternate browser since the site I want to access works only with IE.

I didn't give links to all these because I really have to leave right now, but you can Google them.Firefox is the way to go.....

Solve : Lost everything trying to repair IE6?

Answer»

Was trying to repair IE6 because of slow page loading and following advice that looked to require reloading of XP in order to re-establish IE6. WELL I've lost everything and am sick to my stomach. I'm trying to find out if all of this can be undone and things can be retrieved. I NEED help in the worst way.Whose advice did you FOLLOW and what exactly did you do (steps you performed) to repair IE6?What method of re-installing did you use ? ?
Try and remember as many details as possible...this is important.I talked to one of the computer guys that runs a LOCAL business a while ago and he said if I did a total install that I basically wiped out everything (I did). He has some programs that MAY be able to recover some of the most valuable things for me. It taught me a vauable lesson and that is to back up everything you really want to keep. He said he should be able to retrieve my documents and most of my desktop stuff. What a dummy I am.

Solve : New Tab vs. New Window?

Answer»

what is the benefit in opening a new tab rather than a new window BESIDES mere convenience. Does it really slow your computer to have more windows than tabs open?? (NEED this resolved, my wife says she's smarter than me and says this is true, refer to picture)

thanks. The benefit of tabs to windows...

The more windows you have the GREATER the strain on resources...

Tabs, on the other hand are quick, convenient...and less tasking on your computer's resources.

She's a smart woman... smarter than me apparantly...

and she is PRETTY too...OK one more thing... I havn't given up yet. After about 30 minutes of intense debate, I still do not understand how tabs can take more of your "resources" than windows. Isn't it just a reorganization of an INTERFACE for convenience sake? After all, the links still exist, no matter how they are accessed. Right?? Actually...

If you open another browser window...you open another instance of the program...hence, more resources are used.

Tabbed browsing bypasses this, by opening another page, within the same window.Saviour: I believe you, but what do you mean by "instance"? (just trying to be thorough here)

Ivy: She thanks you for you compliment. Is the OPs wife the one on the left or right of the picture?

Look in task manager, each of the processes is an instance of an executable somewhere. If you have two of the same .exe open (eg "firefox.exe") then you have two instances, and processes of firefox running. It also depends on the program.. On my system at least, Firefox doesn't start a new instance per window you open but IE does.

I can see another benefit from using tabs though... you have less clutter on your taskbar that way.Quote

you have less clutter on your taskbar

And placing new objects on the task bar requires resources.I got pwned by like 8 people on this thread, including my wife...and dog.

<Pats flip81 on the back>

Now, now, don't cry. Your wife and dog still loves you. Can ya feel the love???

Solve : ie7 problems after update.?

Answer»

Hi everyone,
I searched every where and found , litterally thousands of people with the same or similar problems as I am having now.

I am hoping that I can find some fix for this as I cannot afford to wipe the drive.

first, my system
200 gig hd
2 partitions 1 for setup which does not allow for a non destructive reinstall.
512 ram
newest JRE
win xp home sp2 updated
ie7[unfortunately] updated
win firewall with auto update supposedly disabled, i say this because it updated to the newest version of ie7 which caused these problems and it was not set to do so.
avg pro
edwido avg antispyware
spywareblaster
spyware guard
windows defender
none of these programs are set to auto search or clean

I work in education, and while I was at the open learn in a flash chat, my computer started slowing dow and getting choppy. I immediately THOUGHT of , either spyware or something was downloading in the background. But, I do not know what as I refuse to let anything update with out first knowing what it is. D**n if windows update was not engaged. I did not set it . as a matter of fact after it was done, I checked and nothing was enabled to auto update. no scheduling, nothing. yet it did anyway. But I declined to install. I deleted this from my computer , so I thought. went back to ms update and ran comprehensive and declined to update to the final version of ie7, as I have been hearing alot of people complain about java and hyperlinks and flash not playing afterwardswith no real fix. I kept checking to not show this update again, WELL strangely it did it anyway. seriously, no bs. so now no hyperlinks will work, nothing created in or pointing to a java or flash movie will work. I get a java error on the bottom left task pane. or if a movie link, which is how we all put our lessons out on the net, I get a java movie remote call error. I have rolled back to ie6, but nothing works still. I REINSTALLED ie7 and nothing works. I uninstalled flash/shockwave and reinstalled , nothing. I used their shockwave / flash uninstaller and d-loaded the standalone shockwave/flash full install from the desktop and nothing. I have re-registered urlmon and other dlls and nothing. I have not been able to find any viruses or MALWARE, nor have most of the other people that have this problem. coming here may be the only thing I can do. sometimes hyperlinks in general will work but not after I log off the net and log back on, they wont work anymore, here is a strange thing...I keep trying to ease the SECURITY settings to medium-low and ie7 wont let me.

Perhaps you guys here have some sort of help

Many thanks

MarcusDo you have the option of uninstalling IE7 from the Add/Remove Programs menu? Did IE7 get properly installed?

Solve : IE7 - Delete Address Bar History?

Answer»
I have deleted the history on IE7 but have noticed that if a TYPE in an address that does not commence with "www." it will bring up all websites visited commencing with the letters I type.

For example, if a type a "w" up will come an autocomplete such as "whitepages.com.au"

Does anyone KNOW how to rid this history?

Tools/Internet Otions...click the Delete button, then the Delete History button...click OK and/or Apply.

Done deal...
Saviour,

Done this before, so did it again.

No luck the history is still APPEARS in the address bar when you start typing.

What do you have installed as far as Internet Security?

You may be using a software program that is not allowing you to make changes to your browser settings.

This software may be configured to disallow other sites from making changes to your homepage...while at the same time...preventing any history changing.

Get back to me on this please? You can also try downloading, installing and running CCleaner.
Tried CCleaner. Again no luck.

I have not internet security programs except for AVG Antivirus and the XP Firewall.Under Tools/Options check to make sure autocomplete is turned off...
Turned off the Autocomplete.

These addresses still APPEAR !!!!

search your REGISTRY for TypedUrls. delete them if found. Sounds like there may be some type of BH going on here...
I followed instructions from Microsoft Website to delete typedurls and still no joy.

What is meant by BH ?Browser HijackerAfter you unchecked the 3 boxes in 'Auto Complete' as Patio suggested did you try closing IE and running ccleaner?

Solve : Strange sound in IE7?

Answer»

Whenever I load a web page in IE I get a sound like a big raindrop. This sound is not in any of my sounds lists and it drives me crazy. I have turned off sounds in the advanced options but it makers no differencce. Does anyone know what it is and how do I stop it???What OS do you have? What protection do you have?I have Windows XP SP2. Comodo firewall and avast Anti virus. I usually use the Opera browser as IE is such a pain! The sound also happens when I load MSN Messenger and as on IE have disables all sounds on this too in the tools menu but still get this FUNNY droplet noise.Sounds like an add-on toolbar to me...which ones did you install ? ?I do not have any add on toolbars but I have even tried running without any add ons, from the programs menu and I still get the "Plop"I'm not saying you have a virus...far from it...but what do you have installed as far as Internet Security software or malware protection?

These programs may be playing some type of audible sound or alert when you attempt any type of Internet related actions.I have Comodo firewall and Avast anti virus. I do not have any problem in the "Opera" Browser. If I load the web page in IE7 for example , www.computeractive.co.uk I get at least 3 Plops. I think that it may be something to do with adverts. When I load the BBC WEBSITE all is quiet as is Google, but any other like Computeractive.co.uk at least 3 or 4 plops. Also on Live Messenger as soon as the advert at the bottom of the open application comes up it "Plops" Unfortunatley I do not know what to do next? That site won't load for me so i can't TEST it...It comes up on MSN and http://www.windowsmedia.com/Mediaguide/Radio
In fact any web page containing adverts that move. Could it be Flash and if it is how do I stop it??It actually sounds like it may be some type of pop-up or adblocker plug-in installed within your browser...giving you an audible alert when it either blocks pop-ups or ads.

Something you may want to look into...

Are you familiar with how to enable/disable PLUGINS from your web browser in IE7?

Tools/Manage Addons/Enable or disable addonsProblem solved!!!!! It was PEST Patrol running in the background. I have taken it out of the start up in MSCONFIG and now all is silent!! Perfect!
Thanks to you all for your help.

Solve : IE on some desktops does not run VB script?

Answer»

I have an intranet that maintains a weekly work schedule. I have a vb script that dumps the data to excel on the client's workstation and then formats its for printing. On 80%+ of the workstations the script works fine; however, there are a few workstations where the script stops EXECUTING. The security SETTINGS for the intranet are all set the same for all the workstations. I am at a loss of where to look to resolve the problems. Short of reloading the desk image, does ANYONE have any ideas of what else to do? Thank you for your assistance.

Solve : It's your Firefox - tell us how it is!?

Answer»

Could be, I find portable VERSIONS of programs can be very slow depending on the drive they're running from.
What I do notice, however, is that the full menus are displayed for a split second straight after Firefox LOADS, and then the extension kicks in and hides them.
If you're experiencing slow start up time for Firefox, try starting from SCRATCH again - uninstall it,. remove all traces, and then install it again.
I did, and it got me from 20 seconds to 5 seconds start time. Also, defragment your U3 drive, lots of people don't bother defragmenting their USB DRIVES but it can be worthwhile.

Solve : IE6 & firefox not working, computer connected to internet?

Answer»

try what Joemama recommended.

But....

if THAT doesn't work, then it could be that there's a missing file or reg. entry, possibly removed by accident or a PROGRAM (registry cleaner maybe).

now, you can always do a system restore, to restore those files and reg. entries.

OR if you're system restore doesn't work or is turned off, you can re-install windows COMPLETELY, and that MAY help. but only do that as a last resort!!

Finally, it could be that your ip adress is malfunctioning.

if your desk top computer (if you have one) is expierencing the same problem, it is more likely that this is so. You can always contact you ISP and ask them to give you a new ip adress. I downloaded IEFIX and tried to run it. It said that IE7 is not currently supported.
I guess that I am going to have to re-install windows, If I can get the disk from my grand-daughter. Just for info, yesterday when I opened IE the page loaded (very slow)but with half of the Pix's. Tonight when I opened MSN the whole site opened (again very slow). But when I clicked on a link I got the "cannot display the webpage". It seems that I am getting close, just no TEDDY bear. By the way My desktop and Laptop are working fine and when my other grand-duaghter uses her laptop on my wireless it works also. Thanks for all the help.try your ISP. if they can't determine the problem, then...back up your data, take one last look at your system, reboot pc, install windows. *sad song plays in background*

Sorry I havent been around, been busy. I have tried to reinstall windows XP but the computer shuts down in the middle of re instaling. Must have a virus or something? What would be the best forum to go to to get help with this problem. try the virus and spyware forum
you'll recieve specialist help there.
try giving them an updated log of hijack this. You can always try reinitializing the hard drive, partition and format it...making sure your XP media is clean and then try the reinstall.

Reinitializing the hard drive basically writes zeros to each sector of the hard drive...

This process is almost like you going out and buying a new hard drive...all you have to do is prepare it for the installation of your operating system.

It would help if I knew the MANUFACTURER and model of your hard drive...this way I could steer you in the right direction, so you can obtain the correct diagnostic software to perform the above process to ready the hard drive.

I'll wait for a response...Thank you for the response. I cant tell you the hard drive without taking the drive out. After trying several times to reinstall the computer is letting me format the hard drive. this may take some time and I have to get up at 4am to go to work tomorrow, so I will have to continue this tomorrow night. I will let you know how this works. Hopefuly this will let me make a clean install. Thanks again.I reformated the hard drive (seagate momentus 5400.2) tried to install windows and about half way the computer SHUT down. now every time I try to install windows the computer shuts down at various stages. I was hoping that re-installing windows would do the trick but I cant even do that now. all sugestions would be appreciated. Are you sure your CPU isn't overheating? Have you looked at the inside of your computer...dust build-up around the vents and the CPU and power supply fans? Blow the dust out with compressed air...not a vacuum cleaner. Be careful of ESD...

Keep us posted...This is a laptop compact presario v2000. It just shut down again and I checked the hard drive and CPU and neither were hot. Is the fan supposed to run all the time or is it on a thermostat. I was watching and did not see it spinning. I did not have the problem of shutingdown until recently. It could be a new problem not caused by the other problems I was having. When it rains it pour's.If the computer is shutting down during the reinstallation of your OS, then either the computer is overheating...there's a hardware failure (possibly HD related)...

You also mentioned the computer isn't hot, but you also stated the fan isn't running either...if it's not...then you may be experiencing an over heating issue. Thanks for the info. I am taking the computer apart now to see what I can find. Thanks again. Wooa! I just REMEMBERED that I bought a service contract on this computer so I guess I will take it to them. Thank's to everyone that helped. You are a great group of people.don't mention it. Thanks for the kind words...

It's funny when you mention forgotten service contracts...happens to the best of us...

At least you found out before you opened the thing up...

Solve : Downloaded IE 7-now I can't use IE 7 at all-what to do??

Answer»

Last week in an effort to update, I thought I had downloaded IE 7 correctly. Looks like I made a mess as I am unable to use IE7. I keep getting this message which I don't understand. My son, who is much more knowledgeable also has hit a brick wall. Help would be most appreciated. Here's what we get when we try to open IE7:

thankyou.Uninstall the Yahoo Toolbar.Thankyou Patio ,

Solve : Firefox generated permission file?

Answer»

I'm trying to delete a file generated by firefox, it SEEMS to be some type of cookie file. Im' unable to find it using search, my COMPUTER etc. The only way that I know it is there is by using Directory Snoop and Disk Investigator. When I find it using those tools it's says it's a permission file.#This is a generated file! Do not edit... host cookie, Any ideas on how to get rid of it or finding it so I can delete it.
ThanksDirectory Snoop and Disk Investigator are both tools for finding/viewing/recovering deleted files... so if you're seeing it in these tools then it is probably deleted. Many programs create temporary files at run TIME that is deleted when the program terminates.
But why do you want to remove it anyway?
You might try CCleaner. A Yahoo toolbar comes with the STANDARD download but you will have the OPTION to omit that during installation of CCleaner.

Solve : Internet links - emails?

Answer»

Windows XP
Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.4

When I press a link on an email, I go to the page allright; however, I cannot go back to my email account again, there's no "forward," I have to press the X and that puts me out of my account and out of the browser, I have to sign up again. What do you think is causing this problem? I didn't have it before. Thanks so much! What e.mail program are you using ? outlook, hotmail, chainmail?Yahoo!I just noticed that it's happening with the browser too. I did it here, in this forum, and the same THING happened. What could it be? Thanks. You don't go forward to go back to the page you go back. Unless IE7 is different to Mozzilla? Any Mozilla users about?A link should either open a new page, a new tab or just change the current page in the browser.
Only if the link changes the current page will you be able to go back using the back button (I assume you mean back, not forward).
If it it opens in a new page, the old page showing your inbox should be visible when you close the current page.
If it opens in a new tab, just click on the tab with your inbox. Thanks for your help!

I do mean "go back." However, when I try to go back I notice that the arrow to go back is GRAYED out so I've to press X. When I press X I go completely out of the browser. I understand I should go back to my previous page, where the link was. It just happened here too. I was LOGGED in and when I pressed a link I went to the linked page but there was no arrow highlighted to go back so I pressed X and was back at my desktop, out of the forum and the browser. . Check that the page isn't opening in a new tab.
In the pic I've linked to here you see Firefox with 3 tabs open.
You can switch between them by clicking on them. You can close the current one by clicking the X to the right of the tabs.
Hey, Deerpark, you HIT the nail! That's exactly what's happening. Thanks so very much! Glad I could help.

Solve : unable to access certian websites on any browsers??

Answer»

I have a very similar problem but it appears to be only one website I can not access.

I have been pulling my hair out trying to figure this one out and have hit a brick wall.

I have plugged another PC into the same position and it works no problem so it would appear to certainly be a problem within this computer.

I have tried all of the above with no success.

Please help!Like the other two people, I also cannot access certain sites on my browser, for example, I canno access Youtube or Gamfaqs. However, I have noticed one difference, whenever I attempt to access these sites I am brought to http://www.miaminews365.net/look.php?aff=8131&subaff=1312&qq=games. I think this may be one step to SOLVING this problem, but my progress has been completely stonewalled due to my lack of in-depth computer knowledge and my timidity with deleting files when I'm not sure exactly what they do... Please Help Kharhaz what are your internet explorer settings?
Security tab
Privacy and all?
have you tried USING different browsers to open the same sites?
have you reformatted your PC recently? if yes that could be a reason too .Karhaz first off Welcome to CH...
It's best to start a new topic even though you may have similar issues as this will ensure it recieves the proper attention...
I'd suggest running all your protection PROGRAMS after updating them and then DLoad and run Hijack This and save the log to a text file and post it ALONG with what security programs you did run in our Virus and Spyware section...

Solve : IE 7 keeps bouncing back and won't connect?

Answer»

OK I am baffled....IE 7 loads up ok but when I try to go to a different site....it will not load and if it does will bounce back to the original page when I try to hit a KEY or link on that new page....I have AOL 9 i think it is on here too and am using it to get to the web right now because IE won't work....I did recently clean off cookies and temp HISTORY.....but nothing else I know of.....I have no idea how to fix it....I did delete IE 7 and reload it off microsoft just a few minutes ago hoping that would fix it....but no....same problem....any ideas?
UPDATE:
I downloaded Firefox and the same THING happens. I get on ok and then go to a scondary page and when I hit something on that page or even try to scroll down the page it automatically jumps back to the first sign on page.....I can't get IE or Firefox to do anything but sign on....without popping back to the sign on page. HELP..... What kind of connection do you have to the internet ? ?it is a business level DSL line. And thanks for thinking this over...a new day same problem.....Longshot - Do you have a programmable MOUSE or keyboard by any chance?no just a standard wireless mouse and I am on a laptop....oh by the way a few more oddities just discovered....in control panel I cannot open "administrative tools" I click it and it flashes open then goes back to control panel......also just did a system restore to about two weeks back when I was not having any problems.....but no help...still does same thing.....could it be a virus?.....why doesn't the problem occur in AOL.....could it be an AOL problem....some setting in AOL over riding IE.....this is nuts....OK now I am getting somewhere....IT IS THE STINKING MOUSE........when i use the built in mouse pad IE works fine....use the wireless mouse...boom it bounces back to the previous page......my low teach solution.....step one take my mouse into the parking lot and back over it with the ole SUV...mulitple times....step two... buy a new mouse.

Think that will slove it? Or is there something attacking the mouse that I will need to get rid of that will affect the new mouse....anyone run into this before? The other question is why is this the case only with IE and Firefox and not AOL? Humm...any insight would be helpful! It is unlikely anything is attacking the mouse. It seems more likely the mouse is faulty and sending a slightly faulty signal that confuses some programs but others can just about translate it. It may also be the mouse port that is faulty. Is it USB or PS2?

The best way to see if a new mouse cures the problem is to get a new one. Borrow someone elses first if you want to check it out. Let us know what happens. ok well the new mouse (borrowed off ANOTHER machine here) is working fine. Strange deal but thankfully it seems to be solved....thanks for all you who viewed and those who offered help....the thought is greatly appreciated!Quote

my low teach solution.....step one take my mouse into the parking lot and back over it with the ole SUV...mulitple times...

This may not completely solve the problem here...i suggest soaking the small pieces in lighter fluid, igniting it and finish the job...

Solve : Error message when viewing certain sites?

Answer»

I have a forum that I'm a staff member on and for the past week I haven't been able to view the forum. The message below comes up. At first I thought the server was down, but I WENT to Proboards.com and it said it was online then I e-mailed another staff member and she said she wasn't having any problems and wasn't aware of anyone else having any problems.

Today I discovered that a few of my favorites are displaying the same message. I am using the same computer right now so it's not my internet connection. I ran adaware to get rid of spyware and that didn't help either. I am currently running IE6 and it's the only browser I have on the computer. Anybody have any ideas as to why this is happening?

Okay I've tried just about everything I can think of and I've pretty much lost hope here. I've deleted cookies and temp internet files. Even went as far as to restore my computer to a date before this started happening. No luck so far can someone please help me with this?Have you recently ADDED a firewall, hardware or SOFTWARE? Also if you want to you could try Firefox to see if that makes a difference.

Also you should boot to safe mode and run your spyware and AV scans there. Let us know if there are any improvements with changing the browser that you use.

Solve : IE Favourites lost after Windows Upgrade - recoverable ???

Answer»

Hi,

Recently I had to urgently upgrade Windows 2000 to WinXP pro and due to LACK of disk space on drive C, I had to do a fresh upgrade instead of just an update.

I thought Microsoft would have been able to preserve the internet settings and other basic windows configuration on my PC - but nope, I was let down by them. All my programs are no longer useable and even Microsofts own settings arent saved.

I use IE 7 and I am wondering is there a possible way to at least recover the links I had in my favourites on IE7 that I had before the upgrade? I didnt do a backup due to lack of time and too much confidence in Bill Gates. Maybe there is a specific folder I could look for, but seeing as it is on the same partition I dont have too much hope....Normally a re-install wipes the drive in the beginning of the process...without backups i'm afraid you're out of luck.

It would be a good time to start thinking of a routine backup strategy.i dont know if it will work its just a thought try to find out what file contains ie favorites then find a recovery tool sometimes you might be able to find what you need with that. its just a thought dont know if it will work. but a back up plan is the way to go. now that you have a fresh install you should make you a back up of your pc setup just like you want it. use norton ghost is good for this. hope i was of some sort of helpWhere can the IE favourites -folder be found in Windows 2000/ XP Pro for recovering? Is anybody able to HELP me on the IE favourites folder?Try a recovery program like Recuva. I don't think the chance of recovery is very good because windows have been reinstalled on the partition. The deleted favorites have most likely been overwritten, which makes them unrecoverable by any SOFTWARE solution. They are gone...

Sorry.Quote

Where can the IE favourites -folder be found in Windows 2000/ XP Pro for recovering?
Sorry, I didnt make myself CLEAR enough due to work overload. I do have an old backup from end of last year with much favourites on that I would like to recover. But which folder can it be recovered from? Are you asking where the favorites folder is located?
The default location on 2000/XP is:
C:\Documents and Settings\[Your Username]\Favorites
great it worked - main favourites recovered - thanks.Good to hear you were able to recover some of them and you're welcome.

Solve : Very weird?

Answer»

Ok . This happened to me about month ago. I had deleted IE history and I clicked the THING to see if it worked. Then all the sites that havent been there in MONTHS were there. For some of them it had been 2 years since I've been there. Anybody want to explain this? Try deleting it again, if that doesn't WORK, google for a history deleter, I KNOW a similar thread about 7 down that has a link for one.No its already been cleared. Im just wondering how deleting the history braught up every site that I use to go to. I'd say spyware but thats stupid, don't WORRY about it anymore. If it happenes again, say, it might just be a common bug. My history will not delete if I delete after 20 times ish.

Solve : SOME SITES WORK, SOME BRING UP A BLANK, WHITE SCREEN?

Answer»

I have an ACER pc, running windows xp with service pack 2. Some internet sites RUN fine, others (ie. windows hotmail, some online shopping sites I use) will bring up the original home screen but as SOON as I try to log in it just brings up a blank white screen with the little 'done' text in the bottom left hand corner.
I'm sure it's just a setting or something to do with the avast antivirus software I've loaded (which I have now removed) but I haven't a clue how to sort it.Have you tried resetting your browser to the defaults?
Here's the method for IE6, IE7 would be much the same I think.

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Internet Options
5. Security tab
6. RESET all 4 security zones to Default

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Internet Options
5. Privacy
6. Restore 1 Default button

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Internet Options
5. Advanced
6. Restore 1 Default button

You may need to do the following as well

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Internet Options
5. General tab
6. Remove cookies, temporary files and history

Kudos to Raptor. Thanks for the reply, tried that but hasn't workedThe little 'done' text in the bottom left hand corner doesn't neccesarily mean it's really done.
Try waiting for a bit longer.
I have tried waiting, the green bar finishes loading at the bottom of the screen then it's still just a blaNK WHITE SCREEN

Solve : Problem connecting to internet...I think?

Answer»

We have a wireless router on our pc. Trendsetter, I BELIEVE. About 3 WEEKS ago we started having problems connecting. Every website said "page cannot be displayed". Then I noticed down in the right toolbar, it kept SAYING "Local Area Connection, a network cable is unplugged". Our connectivity bar last night had 2 bars full, stating it was getting a good connection. but I still could not connect and it was still stating that a network cable was unplugged. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the router and nothing has changed. If you disconnect the router, unplug the Ethernet cable then plug it back in and it still says network cable unplugged then you could also try going to network properties and right clicking on the icon named after your router and GO to repair...

If you need a more detail description hit me back

Solve : OH GOD, I REMOVED INTERNET EXPLORER!?

Answer»

Really need help here. I was trying to free up space on my computer using its cleanup system... it suggested I free more space by removing components. This didn't sound good so I checked through the list and unticked all the things I didn't want deleted. Then I came to MSN Explorer. Now, I thought, I don't use that one, I have a different Internet Explorer.

Next thing I know, the cursor has taken control (which FREAKED me out in a big way) and the internet explorer icon disappeared! Now there is just a little globe INSTEAD of the e icon and evry time I click it the internet options box comes up. I want to know how I can get it back.

I can still acess the internet through Hotmail and Windows live, and my MODEM is still working obviously, but without the icon I can't just open up the internet. How do I get it back??!?? Please helpwell, to give us a slight start, we like your system specs please.

what OS?

what Service Pack?

have you tried system restore? So hang on a min, you removed internet explorer....

GO download it again ! www.google.com

oh what?
don't tell me you haven't tried that. How are you accessing Hotmail?

What, exactly, freaking happened?

I doubt you're really removed IE. Go to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, and click on the button on the left side of the panel, the one named Add/Remove Windows Components. Internet Explorer should appear in the list of components. Select it, click Next, and complete the procedure.Removing IE from Windows is about 2 1/2 pages of instructions...i doubt this is what happened.

Follow soybean's advice above.also, you could try going to run and typing : iexplore

does the windows pop up again?
Of course I tried downloading it off the net again, before I tried anything else

Thanks Soybean, your advice worked - I clicked add/remove components and checked the internet explorer box, then added it again and everything RETURNED to normal.

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions

The other day some pcdoctor thing popped up and I ran it....told me I had a lot of registry problems etc and then wanted to charge me to download the cleanup program. I deleted the program from my pc. Perhaps this made a change.

Is there a Microsoft program or someother than I can purchase that will clean up registry errors on a pc? I would like to run a prgram that will clean up errors. Is there one?

I'm not familiar with Mediacom's protection package but i would bet it's set to clear history; cookies and Browser history every 24 hours...
Not exactly a good thing.
Check your settings in the MediaCom program itself.i would reccommend you install Service pack 2. but it's totally up to you.

now to get back on topic.

do you have any cleaning programs installed? like window washer or ccleaner.

because if you've set them to clean each TIME you shutdown your computer, it will erase your internet history.A one MONTH bump ? ?
