If you try Firefox, we'll know, if it's IE problem, or something else.

Open "hosts" file in Notepad, and post it back here. Quote from: Broni on October 08, 2008, 10:18:54 AM

Hi Broni, this is what I get...

#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.

# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an INDIVIDUAL line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be SEPARATED by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.

Solve : MS Outlook - "Personal Folders" was not closed properly?

Answer»

I have Dell -- XP -- 300 GB hard disk with 150 GB free. I had Office 2002 but was having so many problems with MS Outlook that I finally gave in and bought and installed Office 2007 this weekend.

One of the problems I had with Outlook 2002 was the error message '"Personal Folders" was not closed properly.' About 2 weeks after getting this message every time I entered Outlook 2002 it quit sending and receiving messages completely. So, I switched to Outlook Express.

I have a huge number of emails. I need them! Deleting them is not the answer. I found out that Office 2002 will only handle 1.6 GB of emails or 16,383 emails. I am CLOSE to that number.  Office 2007 can handle 20GB of emails. This is the main reason I went ahead and made the switch.

I installed Outlook 2007 this weekend. I still GET this same message every time I enter Outlook.

So, my questions for this post:  What does this mean? What is causing it? Why would it be in both Office 2002 and Office 2007?   Will Office 2007 possibly just quit sending/receiving emails like Office 2002 did? What can I do?

I use PCcillin virus and firewall, and CCleaner.

Any help will be appreciated. try to re-install ms office...Thanks for the reply.
I reinstalled Outlook 2002 a couple of time.Microsoft Tech Support wouldn't answer questions on 2002
Finally bought MSOffice 2007. Still get the same message.
I've SPENT 2 hours a day for the last 3 days with Microsoft Tech people. (Takes nerves of steel to do this!!)
Still get the same message.
Part of the problem is I have more messages and GB than Outlook can handle.
2002 could evidently handle 1.6 GB. I had 1.4 GB.
The ad I have on Outlook 2007 says it can handle 20 GB. That's why I bought it.
Tech Support says that is not true. Each Folder in Outlook can only handle 1.3 GB.
Their techs 'had control of my computer.' In their 'fixing it' they managed to duplicate and/or triplicate many (most) of my emails, and taking the pictures out of one set, and also DUPLICATING the backups I had so I can't go back.

Bottom line is I now have about 8GB of messages because of the duplicates and triplicates and still, of course, get the same error message, and am in the PROCESS of going through and trying to determine which of the 30,000 emails is the duplicate without the picture, which will take endless hours.

This has also made my entire computer 'unstable' and I now can't access many of my Excel files and need to work in Safe Mode.

Can you see my teardrops?

At this point there is nothing I can do except delete, delete, delete (in small hunks or it crashes and freezes) and keep the delete file emptied.

OK - Thanks for listening! I don't really have any question until I get everything back to just having one set of my most meaningful emails, and then seeing if I get the same error message that I had in Outlook 2002.

Solve : Internet Explorer 7 COMMENT?

Answer»

I thought I would pass this along.  I now USE Firefox but my wife STILL uses IE7.  IE went BYE bye and would not load so I could not get to the IE tool bar.  After UNINSTALLING and re-installing several times, I was about to give up.  Someone told me I had to GO to tools/internet options/advanced/RESET.   but I couldn't get there.  I finally woke up and went the control panel and clicked the internet options icon there and was able to reset IE; problem solved.  I hope this helps someone.Thankyou for sharing that with us, hopefully someone will use this experience of yours.

Thanks

Solve : Internet Explorer - "Account Has Exceeded CPU Quota"?

Answer»

I have Windows XP - Dell 6 months old - 300 GB - 150 GB free - 2 GB RAM. Home Office.

I installed MS Office 2007 this weekend (have a maze of obstacles and problems besides this one)

Tonight when I tried to open Internet Explorer I got the error message: "This Account Has EXCEEDED Its CPU Quota" -- and the word "Suspended" was on the Internet Explorer Screen. Then "Your account has used more than its SHARE of the CPU in the past 60 second sliding window." or "Your account has consumed too much memory."

I had MS Outlook open, a 1 page Excel spread sheet, a music program playing.

I closed everything and REBOOTED the computer.

Any advice or comments? I've never encountered this before and I often have 6 or 7 programs going at once, and 3 or 4 DIFFERENT web pages up.

Many thanks!I could be wrong but I believe this is an issue with a website you were viewing or trying to visit, not an issue with your computer.  Did this affect your computer, other than the message appearing in your web browser?
Thanks for the reply.
I'll watch carefully what I open.
However, when I received the message I didn't have any websites or the Internet Explorer open. I was just trying to open Internet Explorer - before it got to my home page.
Thanks again. I've resolved this problem by:
Control-Alt-Delete
Using the Windows Task Manager, I found that some softwares were always running in the background.
I was able to delete these softwares.
There were softwares using 35%, 33%, and 26%, and then I would open Internet Explorer and get the error message.

So, there is a limit as to how much music, etc. I can have going at any one time!
(smiles)

Solve : where are the 'REAL' free search sites??

Answer»

Are there any really free people search sites that don't want money?  I have tried a couple- looking up my own family members- some of whom are DEAD, some ALIVE.  I get replies that someone who is alive is 80 years old-wrong- where are the good free sites- or possibly there aren't any??!!Search sites as in searching for people? Sorry- I thought I made that clear- yes- people.I assume you have looked on Google?

The first result seems interesting, haven't tried though.carbon dude... Yes- these are 'teasers'- they find the person, then you have to 'view details', meaning PAY a FEE to see info.  Sometimes they will list a persons name, and the info isn't correct (I looked up everybody in my family, so I knew what was right.  They get names and persons mixed up, I think.

Solve : What is FireFox?

Answer»

What is FireFox and how is it different from Internet Explorer?
heehee firefox has better addons than internet explorer. Seems like firefox is updated more often than IE as far as I see, whether or not that's actually true .... Internet Explorer is much like your average toilet.

Why can't you do your homework on your own? Not homeworkWell, for a start, Firefox is free, IE is not.IE is free

or at least I got it free  Maybe you got it free, but it's not free, and never will be.

Google Search Quote from: kpac on December 22, 2008, 03:39:34 PM

Maybe you got it free, but it's not free, and never will be.

Internet explorer has been offered free since version 3 was released for free to help it compete with netscape. The only requirement now is a windows installation.

98 integrated IE4, 2000 integrated IE5, XP integrated IE6. I see no costs involves here aside from the OS; and if we say that is the PRICE of IE, then we cannot possibly say that Notepad or wordpad or paint or minesweeper or hearts or etc... are free either, since they impose the same requirement for a windows installation (naturally)

Unless of course your measuring costs via potential damage due to security vulnerabilities, which are both impossible to predict within a farm's length as well as borderline pedantic.

Okay.... THANKS for that (long pieces of) information...

That is actually what I meant about it not being free. You can't actually get it for free without a Windows OS.that makes sense- except it only runs on a windows OS anyway- (old mac versions aside)- firefox runs on almost all popular platforms.

Since the IE install is part of windows and it only runs on windows, it is essentially free since you would need to buy windows even if it was a SEPARATE product.

As an example, if office was included, would we not call it free simply because of that?

Or; we could be talking about the WGA cruft they insist on performing when you attempt to download IE7 for example; unfortunately for them, a quick google-search finds many un-WGA required downloads of IE7. (not the latest version sometimes, but it's a workable solution)

Not that I even TOUCH IE voluntarily anymore.Hehe..
Look here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/#feature-vsieOne thing I like better about Firefox is that it manages passwords better than IE.  That's a convenience; it SAVES a little time. You can even get IE on OS X so yes, I'd consider it freeware.

Why you'd want to use either, especially in that combination is beyond me. Cool
Thanks

Solve : What's the difference between Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari??

Ok, I know this sounds like an incredibly dumb question.  I already know that these were MADE from different companies and they each have a diferent style and set-up and blah blah blah whatever.  But when it comes down to performance and capabilities, what's the difference?  And how come some websites only work with FireFox?Little bit outdated, but pretty good reading here: http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9005614I USE Firefox most of the time. But also IE, Netscape and SEA Monkey.
You can still download Netscape 7.2 and it works fine. If a Web Site tells me my BROWSER is too old, I leave and GO somewhere else.Netscape: http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_netscape.asp

Solve : Problems with new version of FireFox??

Answer»

Are there known problems with the newest two versions of Firefox?  Ever since I upgraded, I've had a few problems:

1) pdf files don't load... or they load VERY slowly.  I even reloaded the plug-ins.  The status bar indicates... "Loading xxx..xxxx...xxx page" then "Stopped" then "Loading xx.xx.xx" over and over...   makes you dizzy to watch as it tries to load the pdf.  If I switch to IE, I can load the same pdf without any problems.
2) Google Maps doesn't load 4 out of every 5 times.  I enter an address/destination/whatever, and it just displays "Loading" forever.  Again, switch to IE.... no problems.

What's going on?  Internet Explorer works, but I'd prefer to use FireFox.  Is the newest version of Firefox just full of ERRORS?

If it matters, I'm using Windows XP, and these problems ONLY starting occuring after I upgraded to the the Firefox 3.0 and the 3.0.2 upgrade that came out soon after...
I just did a complete reinstall, hoping that would fix the problem.  It didn't.  Why would accessing Google Maps work in IE, but not in Firefox?  Why would loading pdf files start and stop, about 10x a second (you can see it loading, "stopping", loading, "stopping"... back and forth, repeatedly) with the new version of Firefox?  (and again, not with IE)  I truly prefer FireFox, but if I can't fix these problems, I guess I need to go back to IE...     Hi! philk

Here some option for you for fixing Firefox problem:
Open the Firefox and then go through Tools>Options>Applications> where you find content type and action list. You have to change the actions to Use Adobe Acrobat(in Firefox) where content type contains Adobe Acrobat and then restart the firefox.DLoad and install Foxit Reader...you won't be dissappointed.Jugalboro - thanks for your suggestion.  I don't think I'm explaining my problem very well: the Adobe viewer is installed and Firefox is using it, but its like Firefox won't "receive" the pdf transfer.  Sometimes, if I wait a VERY long time, the document will show.  It's as if the download of pdfs specifically (and maybe also Google Maps?) are being horribly delayed.... like my bandwidth is instantly shrunk to 1/100 its normal size.  The stop/start issue is particularly troubling.  And again, this ONLY happened after I downloaded the upgrade for Firefox (3 and also 3.0.3)...

Patio - thanks for your suggestion.  I will also look into that.
  Quote

DLoad and install Foxit Reader
Uninstall Adobe Reader. It's a horrible tool.
FoxIt: http://www.filehippo.com/download_foxit/changelog/Hi - tried the Foxit reader instead.  That just freezes up when I try to view/download pdf files through Firefox.

I just dont think I'm explaining my issue well enough- my fault.  I just dont understand why Google Maps and PDFs would not download through Firefox, but they will download through IE.  I can't think of any logical reason.  The new Firefox has not been nearly as reliable (for me at least) as the last ones, so I'll PROBABLY just reinstall the old version.Close Firefox. Go Start>All Programs>Mozilla Firefox, click on Mozilla Firefox (safe mode). Same thing? How much RAM ?
How much free space on that HDD ?
What type of internet connection ?

If .pdf's are locking up 2 different apps you may have other issues...Patio - my computer has 2 GB RAM, 36 GB free on the HD, and a basic cable (512 I think) internet connection.  Downloading speed is not an issue when I use IE.

Broni - yes, it does seem to work more frequently than in regular mode.  I just RAN through it a dozen times- when in Safe Mode, I am more likely to get to the PDF in a timely manner,  but I dont always get there.  In regular mode, I am getting to PDFs every now and then as well.

It's as if my computer is sensitive to NETWORK traffic...  (right now, at 1am, not that many people are online)  is there a way/reason that the FIREFOX connection is slower or slows itself down during very busy times?  That doesnt make sense, but neither does this problem...  Your profile may be corrupt.
Create new profile, and if it works OK, you can transfer all data from the old one to the new one.
Manual: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_FirefoxBroni-

I think you are on to something.  I created a new profile, and so far things are running smoothly.  Google Maps and PDF files load/download normally.  Will continue to test, and I'll post my results here shortly.    Thanks!Good news Fire  fox quit displaying after an update by somebody.  I could see it in the task bar but could not get a gui display.  I thought XP had gone flaky as it had become less and less functional over the past two years, (Word quit working and it would not let me reinstall.) So I reinstalled Windows and now FF won't even show up in the taskbar on a clean WinXP home install on my Dell Dimension E531 dual core AMD with 3 gig of memory and lots of space on my hard drives.  Did Mozilla screw up or did MS disable FF with an update?  I have never liked IE and now I am forced to use it or Flock which has a Mozilla engine but it still works.  I miss my FireFox!  Its high level of functionality an ease of use has me spoiled.grichardt

Solve : IE7 Goes Unstable When Closing IE7 or TABS?

Answer»

For about 1-2 months now I've had and IE7 problem driving me nuts.

I am using Windows EX Pro.

When I CLOSE IE7, or simply close a TAB open in IE7, or attempt to open any enclosure in an email, the system goes unstable.

Unstable meaning that many elements on the screen, including the topmost bar, are flickering and the system seems to be locked up.

My only out is CONT/ALT/DELETE, and it USUALLY takes several applications before things SETTLE and I am left with my desktop. I have re-downloaded IE7 several times, no change.

I have installed Firefox, and it WORKS fine with no problems.

Any ideas?Close IE.
Go Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, and click on Internet Explorer (no add-ons). Same thing?KA-POW

No problem. Now it's a matter of finding out wich add-on is screwing with me!

Thank you muchly for pointing out that function.

ArtTo be on the safe side DLoad fresh copies of each addon one at a time and then test...OR you can give up IE7 because it has a serious security flaw(so does all other version of IE anyway).Start with toolbars (Google, Yahoo, etc.)

Solve : Made a Mistake While Tweaking Firefox?

Answer»

Well I have the new Firefox 3 update and I'm new to tweaking Firefox so one of my friends told me that you can make Firefox even faster by giving it a few tweaks. I know that real speed depends on your internet connection, cpu, and etc. and these most of these tweaks just pre-fetch HTML markup and some compress JavaScript and other small files. But I did it anyway......So I went to about:config in Firefox 3 and set  “network.http.pipelining” to “true”, set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”, and “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to 25. They all work FINE and there is a slight speed INCREASE in Firefox 3 and then a few days ago I got an idea and made a new String called “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set it to zero, the PROBLEM then I realized the new String I made major problem is that websites with lots of pictures takes may refreshes in order to full load the page. So I thought i just delete String but in about:config I can't delete the String!!! Apparently I can delete booleans but I can't delete strings!! Can some tell me how to delete that String? Do I have to edit one of the files in Mozilla Folder, if so what is the file and where is it located?I don't think you can delete About:Config entries...

Right click the newly created entry and click Reset. Then Restart Firefox.Or create a new Profile...To Carbon Dudeoxide
Yeah, already tried, seems to work somewhat, but if anyone can figure out how to completely delete without requiring me to uninstall and then reinstall Firefox, would be much appreciated!

Trying Patios method now...All config entries are stored in prefs.js file, located in your profile.
In XP, your profile is located here: C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
You can open, and edit prefs.js with Notepad. Thanks Broni, I just manually deleted that line in the prefs.js file USING Dreamweaver, and all seems to good now.Cool In the meantime grab MozBack....pretty handy tool for backing up Profiles, extensions, settings etc.

Works for ThunderBird as well ! !..or/and FEBE: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2109

Solve : Can't use Twitter?

I am running IE8 on Windows XP SP3. I have been unable to log in on TWITTER. Every time I TRY to log in I get a message reading "You cannot use the Twitter website without having JavaScript enabled on your web browser. Please re-enable JavaScript and refresh this page." I have checked in Tools>Internet Options>Security>Custom Level>scrolled down to Scripting and made sure that both Active Scripting and Scripting of Java Applets are checked. I just did a FRESH reinstall of Windows and I am still having the same problem. Before reinstalling I also tried re-registering the .dll also to no effect. PS my antivirus is Microsoft Security Essentials. Could this be preventing Twitter from running?Java and javascript are different things.

Maybe for their new features such as IM...which flash isn't neccessary for anyway...
Honestly i don't understand much of what they do.Flash? I upgraded to the "new" Yahoo Mail a few months ago, and it ain't Flash.Yahoo says it is:  http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/yahoomail/technical/browser-06.htmlMaybe it's geo-located? Because the Irish version definitely doesn't use Flash. Possibly the US version does...Don't know how old this article is on the subject.

If so, it's the first case of Flash use I've SEEN where you can't determine that Flash is being used by right clicking on a part of the page where Flash is in use.  For example, right click on any web page ad based on Flash and you'll see the version of Flash Player stated in the right click menu.

I can see that Yahoo! Mail often places Flash-based ads on the Mail page.  But, I can't see any indication Flash is actually in the Mail functionality.  Can someone shed some LIGHT on this? Quote from: soybean on August 17, 2011, 01:51:31 PM

Yeah, you're right. Even if it was embedded using a script or other method it would still could up as Flash on right clicking. Quote from: kpac on August 17, 2011, 08:20:17 AM

It must be, because the link says USIt's TERRIBLE  Most of the time when clicking on saved folders, it won't display emails, page refresh doesn't work.  Clicking on the Yahoo Toolbar "Mail" will then allow folder contents display for a while.  This occurs in IE8 & FF on different computers.  It was beta for a while until it went final a month ago, now no choice.

This is the worst Yahoo email "upgrade" ever. It's Javascript, can be changed back to Classic.

For FIREFOX: Open TOOLS -> OPTIONS -> CONTENT, click on "DISABLE
JAVASCRIPT". Now hit F5 to refresh the page while you are in Yahoo!
email in order to switch back... In the options, click (PERMANENT) to
switch back to YAHOO! Classic. DO NOT click the "ONE TIME ONLY" option.

IMPORTANT: Turn JAVASCRIPT back ON once you have your "CLASSIC" account back.

Solve : arranging 'My Favorites' in alphebetical order with IE 9.0??

How do I do this. I know I did it with earlier versions of IE but I don't see it now.
Options are listed in attachment;

[regaining space - attachment deleted by admin]You COULD do this by a created folders and saved URL pages. Just click Favorites(Star icon) to open drop-down menu for and CHOOSE or highlight and right-click folder then use Sort by Name.

You could even arrange WITHIN the folder by expanding then right click.BTW, the Opera browser AUTOMATICALLY keeps bookmarks in ALPHABETICAL order.    Quote from: jason2074 on September 15, 2011, 01:44:29 AM

Solve : can't open .doc in firefox?

Answer»

I have to USE firefox to ACCESS the blackboard website where my homework is posted. something (an AUTO update or me being less than an expert on computers) caused it to try and open the documents with word 2010 which I don't have.  So I tried to change the default program and I accidently changed it to a shrotcut instead of word 2007 itself.  Now not only will it not open the documents, but when I right click on it the only options I get are for the link itself (i.e. "copy link location", "save link" etc.)  There is no "open with" or save option or anything.  My default programs for IE are fine, this is only occuring in FF.  Any suggestions??http://kb.mozillazine.org/Changing_media_handling_behaviour

Internet Explorer has more users, according to most SOURCES.  Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_web_browsers.   But, there is no "best" browser.  The best browser is WHATEVER you like best.

Solve : Is this a good time to install Chrome??

Answer»

Just read about Microsoft Nuking Chrome.  Due to that, is this a good time to install it or should I wait?
I NEED ADS to show on IE8 and am unable to get them. I heard that Microsoft installed an ad blocker in the Firewall that has caused this.Microsoft's antivirus software, Microsoft Security Essentials, had a bug in its virus definition file on SEPTEMBER 30th, 2011 which mistakenly identified the Google Chrome browser as trojan. The company says it's "already fixed the issue," so if you are actually using MSE then you should update the virus definitions to later than Sep 30 (you should be doing this anyway) so yes, you can install Chrome if you want to.

Solve : tools menu on firefox 6?

Answer»

Where would I find the tools menu in firefox  THANKS  RonOn the Menu Bar.  Is this homework? If you don't see the "Tools" menu or the others (File, Edit, View, etc.), you're PROBABLY using the same view I use.

There are two WAYS to get to this menu, one that always turns it on and one that will briefly make it APPEAR.

To briefly make it appear, press the Alt KEY. You'll see the menu bar appear at the top of the browser window. As soon as you make a selection from a menu, the bar will disappear again. You can, of course, open it again with the Alt key.

To make it so the bar is always on, click the Firefox button -> Options -> Menu bar. This will toggle the bar on and remove the Firefox button. To remove the menu bar again, click View -> Toolbars -> Menu bar. This will return you to the view you probably have now.Or right-click just above the URL bar/beside the tab and put a checkmark on Menu bar. Just to add also this for customizing FF.

Solve : Can't import bookmarks on Google Chrome??

Answer»

I have Windows 7.

I have my Google Chrome bookmarks saved in a backup file and I want to import them to a new user on my computer.  However, when I am on my new user in Google Chrome and I select the option "Import bookmarks from html file", I am prompted to browse for the file, select the file, and then click "open".  However, no matter where I click, every folder ends in "no items match your SEARCH", meaning I can't find my back up file to open in the browsing window opened by Chrome.  In the browsing window, under file type (next to file name) it says "Firefox Document" and I can't CHANGE it.

I can, however, still find the backup file if I just start at My Computer.  Does anyone know why this is happening? It is probably because the EXTENSION of that file is WRONG for some reason. Maybe .htm INSTEAD of .html?Try moving the file to a USB pen drive and see if it works that way...

That's why I want to try getting it to load on here. See this http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=40530c86b1f179d9&hl=en for further info.  While  you're there, look carefully at the various RELATED links shown in the column on the right side of the page under "Related Discussions".

I think you need to try researching this in that Google Chrome support forum or elsewhere.  I really haven't USED Chrome for months now and don't particularly want to spend time researching this.

Anyway, it seems to me that if you have a "bookmarks.bak" file on one computer in which you had been using Chrome, you should be able to copy that file to another computer and then import those bookmarks into Chrome  on that computer.  This makes sense; the approach for moving bookmarks for any browser from one computer to another would be basically the same. Yeah that's the file I'm talking about, that I tried to import into another computer but it came up empty.

I researched it and websites say apparently every time chrome is closed, the bookmark file is overwritten ):

Solve : IE8 smartscreen filter using Vista?

Whatever website I go on that I need to "logon" or provide a password, IE8's smartscreen filter pops up saying "do you want to display secure content, etc." No matter
what I click on ( YES , NO, or X ), it pops up again in 3 seconds....continuously, while I'm trying to navigate the website. I've gone into "safety" on the IE8 toolbar

Solve : Problem with Firefox Toolbar?

Answer»

I recently switched from IE to Firefox(which was much much FASTER). I was able to put some individual sites and folders into the bookmarks toolbar across the top of the page. I was playing around with the toolbar and TRIED to REMOVE a "separator" I had put in the toolbar. But when I removed the separator I also somehow removed all the files/folders that were on the horizontal bookmarks toolbar.

I tried reinstalling the files/folders by dragging them from the bookmarks toolbar sidebar where they now reside. But they can no longer be dragged to the bookmarks toolbar going across the top of the screen. I also tried going to a random new site and dragging the site icon to the horizontal bookmarks toolbar but this cannot be done either.

So, in summary I have this empty bookmarks toolbar across the top of the screen and can't drag anything there.

Thanks for your help! If you right click in the toolbar area, you should get list of the toolbars and you can select or un-select toolbars to be displayed.  Do you see it?  Is Bookmarks Toolbar selected? Also if you right click a toolbar and select "Customize" you get a box full of items and separators which you can drag onto the toolbar. You can also drag things from the toolbox into the box or onto other toolbars. The box has a button at the bottom, "RESTORE default set".

IE 8 is loading and surfing the internet way to slow.  Just went thru with SuperDave in cleaning out this computer.  I have defragged.
This is probably a ridiculous question but I'll ask anyway.  During that process of working with SupreDave, did you clear the browser history in all browsers?  lol, but that's not necessary at all. you can run any browser without clearing the cookies.

Solve : Online videos play choppy. It's getting worse, and I don't know how to fix it.?

Answer»

It never did this before, but for a few weeks, all online videos play choppy, even when fully loaded.  They'll almost like sputter.
I don't have the nicest computer in the world, but it never did this before.  I use firefox.  I have the latest version of flash.  Have updated the drivers.  I really don't know what else to do, and I watch online videos all the time.  It's not just one site.  It's every video site that I've tried.  Any help would be appreciated as I am out of ideas.  Thanks.Have you changed any hardware or software coincident to the change? Have you been getting any kind of error messages when doing tasks on the computer? What occurs re this phenomenon if you use another browser? How do non web videos perform such as dvd's or stored videos on your HDD? truenorthNo.  I haven't changed anything at all.  There have been do error messages.  I have tried 3 different web browsers.  DVDs and stored videos seem to play fine. What type of ISP connection are you using? What kind of speeds are you getting on it? Have you installed all the updates for the XP  O/S particularly SP3? truenorthHard DRIVE running out of space, causing caching to slow everything down?
Too many programs running in the background causing the CPU to be busy all the time? I have DSL at the same speed it's always been.  I'm not running out of hard drive space.  It's basically acting as though there are a lot of other programs running at the same time that I'm trying to watch a video, like a scan or something.  The thing is,  there isn't anything running in the background to use up CPU.  I have been trying to figure this out for about three weeks now, and am completely stumped.  You tried emptying the cache on all your browsers?
Reinstalling and/or updating Flash? Yup, all cache's been emptied.  I've uninstalled, reinstalled flash.  Even installed earlier versions, but nothing.  It's actually been worse today than it has been.Sounding more and more like a connection issue to me...
Travel to SpeedTest.net and see what your results are...compare them to what your ISP says they should be...

PS if you have wireless setup in your home your neighbors may be stealing signal...which will result in slower speeds...
Review your security settings if the above is the case.Download Minitool box from this link http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic398507.html
Checkmark only List Installed Programs and List Users, Partitions and Memory size and CLICK Go. Follow the instruction to copy/paste the result here. The speed test is the same that it's always been, and I have a wired connection.  MiniToolBox by Farbar

Solve : mobile phone?

Answer»

dear sir, how to connect mobilephone with the pc and browse the internet explorer
Contact your cell PHONE provider.  It will vary by region, model and class of SERVICE. For most of the USA, Verizon has the best internet over cell phone service. In some areas AT&T is better.

How to get your high-speed Internet via cell phone networks
By David Hakala
...
Cellular broadband is a boon for people who are not within other ISPS' coverage areas or who need Internet access while they are moving. Once a computer is connected to cellular broadband, it can serve as a gateway DEVICE that allows a houseful of computers to share the connection. All that's required is a router plugged into the gateway computer's Ethernet port.
...
http://www.digitallanding.com/Phone/article_display.cfm/article_id/4482
It is not always that easy. Check and see what others in your area are doing.
Connect your mobile to pc

1)go to network connections > create a new connection >click next >connect to the internet >set up my connection manually >connect using a dial up modem

2)It asks for ISP name, write anything and press enter

3)It asks for phone number, type in *99***1# and press enter

4) click next >next > finish

5)window pops up asking for username and password, just close it for now

6)right click on my computer>manage>device manager>modems> click on your mobile modem , right click on it and go to properties

7)a windows pops up, go to advanced> here in extra settngs, you have to type this  +cgdcont=1,"ip","your gprs connection name"

where your gprs connection name is  airtelgprs for airtel ,  aircelgprs for aircel  etc
8)after entering the above lines>click ok and close everything

9)Now go to network connections >right click on the one you created just now(it will be under dial up n/ws)>connect

10) a windows pops up asking for username and password, just click on dial , if its a success then you can browse internet on pc using mobile gprs

follow the steps correctly

make sure that you select GPRS setting on your phone and not WAP and note down your GPRS APN which you need to enter in your PC too

This technique is common for all the networks

PS : GPRS SHOULD BE ACTIVATED ON MOBILE FIRST !

good LUCK

Solve : Occasionally, incorrect characters being outputted?

Answer»

This is pretty strange, and I don't really know how to explain it, but I'll try. Sometimes, when I'm typing online, the CHARACTER that appears isn't the character I typed.

For example, if I press the ' key it will show up as é. Closing and restarting the browser will temporarily solve the problem, but about 40 minutes later, ' = é again. I thought it was a firefox problem, but it happens in chrome as well. I thought it was a hardware problem, but wouldn't that MEAN the ' key would always result in a é? I've searched online, but the only solutions seem to be for when the keyboard consistently output incorrect characters.

I'm getting sick of closing my browser every 40 minutes or having to open up character map just so I can finish typing a reply before having to restart my browser, so any help would be appreciated.Does this happen in every app (IE, Notepad, Word, etc) or only in the browser? Check the language settings in Control Panel. You must hit the ' key twice before any vowel.

But why would would you want a ' key before any vowel?
What words require that? You're not hitting ctrl + shift at the same time, every time by any chance? Allen - It happened as I was writing a reply to Geek-9pm and RAPTOR, so I opened word pad, MS Works, iTunes, char map, and the start menu's search bar and tried the keys in them. The keys responded normally. It is only happening in firefox and chrome.

Geek-9pm - When it happens, it's usually when I'm making contractions, or adding links to comments on reddit for the square brackets. The other ones I only learned about when I decided to see which other keys were effected.

Raptor - No, I'm only pressing the ' key (or one of the keys I mention below)

Full list of the problem keys and their incorrect characters

pressing the [ key results in ^ (first press gets nothing, pressing any other key makes it show up)
pressing the ] key results in ç
pressing the \ key results in à
pressing the ' key results in è
pressing the / key results in è
pressing the tilde key results in /It would seem that you have the wrong keyboard layout and.or language. But you have not said what OS you have, so it is hard to guess. It does seem odd that the problem is only in the WEB browsers.

In what part of the world doth thou live? Is another language used on that same computer?

Quote

The relationship between Unicode and HTML tends to be a difficult topic for many computer professionals, document authors, and web users alike. The accurate representation of text in web pages from different natural languages and writing systems is complicated by the details of character encoding, markup language syntax, font, and varying levels of support by web browsers.

It might be a Unicode thing.
What about Internet Explorer?  Same thing?

As a workaround, type your text in WordPad or Notepad and the copy and paste to your browser. What happens if you do hit ctrl + shift when the problem occurs? Have you checked the keyboard language settings ?

Transfusion seems to be correct in assuming you're USING Windows XP but can you confirm that?

The statement above doesn't make much sense.  Internet Explorer should be on your Programs menu.  That's the most logical way to open it if you have no shortcut icon on your Start Menu.  Is it not in your Programs menu? It can also be easily moved from there to the Desktop using Drag and Drop...

No matter what Win version...I'm using windows 7.  I tried as you said but there isn't an "internet connection" listed, just a "network" Quote from: earmic on February 16, 2012, 06:06:48 PM

You tried as who said?  Using the quote feature in the forum often aids communication.

And, your statement about an "internet connection" doesn't make sense.  Your question is about the internet explorer button, not your internet connection.I tried as transfusion said.Oh boy, we are having some communication problems here, aren't we?  Since the images posted by Transfusion are for Windows XP, I'm wondering how you tried to apply them to Windows 7.

"My Computer" is Windows XP terminology.  "Computer" is Windows 7 terminology.

In Windows 7, right click on Internet Explorer on the Programs menu and select "Pin to Start Menu".  That will restore the missing icon. Okay I FOUND it in the "programs". when i select it to be pinned top the start menu, nothing happens.  I can however pin it to the task bar.I actually believe he's lost his connection...not an Icon...I can drag it to the desktop as a shortcut, but not the start menu ( the one along the bottom)  which is where it always has been.Nevermind everyone, it worked as you said, it was covered up by another icon, many thanks from the old man. The Start Menu is not along the bottom.  Now, I think you mean the Taskbar, not the Start Menu.

Solve : Adobe Flash Lag?

Answer»

While on youtube twitch.tv and own3d.tv I get random BROWSER lag 5-10 seconds between each lag and the lag usually lasts about 5-15 seconds each time when clicking in the browser it freezes and is unresponsive then it goes back to normal only to do it again. This happens for Firefox and Google Chrome (latest versions) I have Windows 7 64Bit. Ive tried reinstalling Adobe FLASH 64Bit and it DIDNT solve the problem.

Thanks to thoes who help <3.How about disabling certain protection softwares, firewall which are currently installed? Some recent software updates could also cause this problem. I usually have this freezing problem currently in FF 9 and 10. Notice this in task manager of a CONTAINER plugin. But have not found or resolve the problem yet.

Yes, he can do that. The piratical limit is the different kinds of browsers available.
here is a abridged t list:

Mozilla Firefox
Google Chrome
Opera
Apple Safari
Netscape X
OmniWeb

That makes seven. Don't known why ignored SeaMonkey.

Also, even one browser will kept different favorites for each user anyway. Some browsers allow customization, which nalso can nbe different for each user.

Of course, you can't run two USERS are the same time with each his own keyboard. Doesn't work that way. No yet.
Oops. Yes, you can on a Mac.

That doesn't actually install different versions of IE on a computer.  Your reference is describing a way for web page developers to test their pages on different browsers without having all the browser versions INSTALLED on their computer.  The tool is called Browser Sandbox and it's online, not on the user's computer.

I'm wondering why banditftw wants to do this.  Why not just use IE9?
Thanks for the responses ... I'm gonna try and see what happens The reason I WANT two versions of IE is I don't like IE9 and my other user(the boss--know what i mean) wants IE9 and two browsers is cheaper than two machines
Thanks   Oh, and thanks to the moderator that moved this to the right place for me  If you are using WINDOWS 7 Pro or Ultimate run IE 8 inside XP Mode.or you can get a different browser, like avant browser, which uses the IE engine, if you so want to.

Solve : IE9/Adobe Flash Player question?

Answer»

Hi To Everyone,

Sometimes when I try to watch a news video, youtube video etc. on IE9, I will immediately GET a message indicating that I can't watch it unless I download and install Adobe Flash Player 11.  I have done this many times.  Each time it tells me that it has installed successfully.  Then the next time I am using IE9, trying to watch a news video or similar I get the same message again--- install Adobe Flash Player.  What is happening each time I download Adobe Flash Player to IE9 that apparently causes it to disappear even though it states it has been successfully installed.  What can I do to keep it working for the next time it is needed?  I also have Chrome and Firefox and I do not have this problem on those browsers.  In fact, sometimes during the download to IE9 it will state that it is already installed on Chrome.  My computer uses Windows 7.

Thanks,
beachguy
Is it only on a particular WEBSITE? Can you post the link? No, it is not a particular web site, it just seems to not play any videos in IE9 when it comes to news, you tube etc.  I went to my control panel, add/remove programs and it says Adobe Flash player 11 is installed on this computer.  I also went to the Adobe download center and it states IE9, Chrome and Fire Fox all use version 11.1.102.55. of Flash Player.  On that same page it says Adobe Flash Player 11.1.102.55 is installed on this computer.  This is weird.  The computer says it has the program, Adobe says the computer has the program, but only when on IE9 does it keep asking to download the same THING.  Is something blocked or turned off that can be unblocked/turned on on IE9?Is disable addons checked in IE ?Can you tell me what steps to take to do that, check enable/disable add ons in IE?Do you have Adobe Flash Player and Adobe Shockwave Player versions 11.xx.xx in your add or remove programs?yes, both are there. If you open Programs and Features (in Control Panel), you should SEE two instances of Adobe Flash Player installed since you have 3 browsers.  For IE, you should see Adobe Flash Player 11 ActiveX.  For Firefox and Chrome, you should see Adobe Flash Player 11 Plugin.  Do see both in Programs and Features?Yes, they are both there exactly as you indicated they should be.I would try downgrading to IE8 then go back to IE9 update after the problem is cleared. It may be  a website or your Windows that is causing the problem. If you go to http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ with IE, does the web page confirm you have the latest version of Flash Player installed? Yes, I am thinking this is something I will just have to get use to on IE 9.Problem solved.   I went to IE in the start menu and clicked on it.  In the right hand upper corner is the symbol for  "Tools".  I clicked on that and then clicked on  " Manage".  There was a list of programs that could be enabled or disabled by clicking on them.  Surprise, surprise... there were among the programs listed two programs for Adobe that were disabled.  I clicked on each one and enabled them.  Now, I have all types of videos playing on IE 9.  They are also still working on Chrome and Firefox. Solve : IE9/Facebook?

I have IE 9. I can log into Facebook and it's fine. When I click on my games, it goes to a page that wants me to login and the page is blinking and goes from "about:BLANK" in the address bar to "it has the facebook link to my game" here. Sometimes it will POP up and say there is a PROBLEM with IE and has to be shutdown. I did find that one problem is AcroIEHelper.dll_unload, whatever that is. Another problem says APPCRASH, ieexplorer.exe, fault module ntdll.dll.
I do not KNOW how to fix this. I was only getting this problem when I would hold down ctrl and click on my game and it opened up a new tab but now it does it also when I just click on the game from the main tab.

I uninstalled Adobe and reinstalled it.  This did not fix it. I don't want to go back to IE8.You're infected...
