Solve : My internet cuts out every time my brother downloads >:(?

Answer»

So I share an internet with my family; but to be honest it is only really me and my two brothers that use it...Up untill about 2 years AGO I always used to be connected to the internet modem by lead/wire. And it was great no internet disconnection or anything! But then I decided I wanted to take my PC up stairs and so got a wireless STICK. But then came the problems...When either one of my brothers decided they was going to download my internet stopped working...But both of my other brothers internets worked.
So brother 1 downloads, brother 2 STILL playing his pc great, and my pc internet connect 0! It said my connection was perfect all bars green the best it can be but my internet cuts out untill he stop his download

Anyway I fault it may be my wireless stick since it was a old one so I went out and invested in a £60.00 one...The best one I could find. This stick is supposed to have a range where I can sit in my loft or back garden and still play games download etc...But then once again still the same thing...

After 2 years of this and looking up on the internet with no one else seeming to have this problem I have just given up and hoped that you guys would have an answer, has anyone else came across such a thing? Me and my brothers love games and they are always downloading KNEW ones...I just am fed up with being in the middle of a game and BANG! You're game has been disconnected because of your download mad hungry brother, why wont you just let me slap you in the face

Be so greatful for anyone who can shead a BIT of light on the problem, once again this seems to only happen to me and no one else...

This info may help

Solve : Desktop looses internet / LAN connection overnight every night?

Answer»

Hope SOMEONE can nail this for me, have pulled the rest of my hair out and can't figure this out. Background, Home network system, netgear gigabyte wireless n router WN3500?? I think, Plugged into that is a netgear 8 port gig hub, plugged into the hub are a printer, two desktops, a server, a network media tank, and a WII. Also on the wireless side are three laptops. EVERYTHING has a permanently assigned IP address with the router. The Router, hub, server, and both desktops are on 24/7 and are on UPS's. This setup has worked FLAWLESSLY for about two years, server backing up the desktops everynight and so on. For the last month, I have ONE desktop that looses connection every NIGHT. When you hover over the connection icon in the systray, it always says unidentified network, local only. Even that is a fib as it won't see anything else on the network either, and is not showing up as connected in the router. The only way to fix it is to reboot the desktop, and all is well until the next morning. There seems to be no consistant time as to when it disconnects, just sometime in the night.
Things i have tried. Replaced the internal netgear GIG card in the desktop, assumed it was failing, replaced the cat cable, tried a different port on the hub, tried the built in 10/100 port on the desktop (with and without the gig card installed) made sure the power option for the card was not set to disable to save power, released the assigned IP address and gave it a different one, uninstalled and reinstalled all drivers, also checked for updated drivers. Everything else about this machine is working perfectly. There has been no new software or hardware changes. Stumped I am, and it is only affecting this one desktop.

Any ideas??

Thanks in advance!

BobI am going toassume you have either a cable modem or dsl. Try rebooting one of those by unplugging the power from it WAIT a couple of minutes then plug in and see if it helps and also I se that you are using a hub? what for how many ports does the netgear have if it is enough for all your periphials then i would use it instead of the hub. That's what I do and I don't have near the things plugged in that you haveQuote from: gjmay12 on July 12, 2012, 05:03:25 AM

Safe to ignore this post. If the other machines are getting internet, its not your router / modem.

Instead

Try reinstalling / UPDATING network card drivers in the 'dodgy' desktop. If your still getting issues try another network cable.

And then if still more issues, try another port on the router. If the issue persists, the last thing I can suggest for now is trying another network card in the desktop.

Solve : PCM bandwidth?

Answer»

im working on a question and I came up with an answer, but i would just like to clarify if its correct

the question asks We sample and digitize (with PCM) a VOICE signal with fmax=4 kHz and we use nb=6 bits/sample. The digital signal must be transmitted on a channel with bandwidth Bch= 6 kHz. What is the number of bits PER signal ELEMENT (R=?) for the worst case factor c=1 ?

the answer i have is r=4bits

I used the formula
B(min) = c(N)(1/r) = c(n(sub b))(f(sub s))(1/r) = c(n(sub b))(2)(B analog)(1/r)
As I said in one of your other posts, We PREFER not to help with homework here. Sorry.

Solve : wireless networking setup for a large warehouse??

Answer»

Does anyone have experience with Wifi Access Points? I need to wire for some in a warehouse 40,000 sq ft.Welcome to CH

You may need to AP (Access Points). Depends on density.
Some 4000 square feet is not so big. How many mobile devices would You u have? Does it have a high ceiling? Is it a steel structure? Is the warehouse inventory very dense? Like very big boxes. with very little open space? Is this a warehouse with a slow moving inventory? A storage rather that a staging area? Storage only areas tend to be very dense and hard no cove with one AP.

Can you make a preliminary tour? Put a wireless router in a elevated place and then walk around with a mobile device, like a tablet, ans see if you get good reception in different areasDid you mean 2 access points? Also, its 40,000 sq ft. not 4000. 10 mobile devices. 30' ceiling. I didn't see any steel. Lots of big boxes stacked all the way to the ceiling with maybe a foot clearance. It's more of a storage area.

Thanks!!40,000 feet?
Sorry, have trouble with big numbers. That's why I am broke most of the time.

Yeah, low ceiling, dense storage. It will be a chore. WI-FI does not penetrate well in a large area with high density stuff. Mostly because the low power levels used. You may want to use another TECHNOLOGY.**

What kind of data SPEEDS? Is this video surveillance? Voice only? Or just telemetry? Why can't you just wire the whole thing. Are these devices to be carried by persons?

Lew-cost wireless surveillance cameras have a range of about 200 feet if there is line of SIGHT or very low density obstructions.

** If it is voice communication, just go with commercial walkies-talkies which are VHF and have long range and good n penetration. Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 30, 2012, 07:45:26 AM

40,000 feet?
Sorry, have trouble with big numbers. ...

If it helps, consider it to be one acre. An acre is 43,560 sq. ft.

I wonder what the configuration of his building is? It is possible that it might not be all that great a distance.

...

Depending on how his building is laid out, it could be that 200 feet is what he has - max.
(200 x 200 = 40,000 sq. ft )
It just might work for him.
In other words, his best bet might be to try it, and find out.

The OP needs to tell us what is doing.

If it is Wireless Inventory Control, there is equipment on the market that does that kind of thing. But using Wi-Fi for that does not do well in a large area where this is a lot of big boxes and selves full of stuff.

Wireless Inventory is often done with 900 MHz RF. It can cover a million square feet. Wireless Inventory is a form of telemetry, or Low-speed data. Not much power is needed. But reliability is important.

But video cameras are tough. You need bandwidth and some power for a clear picture. Unless you go digital video.

Voice communication not a problem.Thanks!

This will be for forklift drivers and laptops. No cameras.put your WAP's on the walls and not the ceiling since there is not much space from the boxes to the top of ceiling. If you only have four walls then probably no more than eight, two on each wall. put them at least HALFWAY up maybe a little further, this should give your fork drivers good access to the WAP'sCheck our aerohive.

They have tools such as a network planner, you can see how many access points you will need.

They will also refund all the costs if your not happy with the signal range.

Solve : Nyquist sampling rate?

Answer»

I have this PROBLEM that I have worked out. Im only checking to see if it is correct. here is the question:

What is the Nyquist sampling rate for a band-pass SIGNAL with a bandwidth of 10 kHz if the lowest frequency is 50 kHz?

Here is what I did:
I added the bandwidth and the frequency together, and multiplied them by 2, and got 120kHz as my answer.
(10kHz + 50kHz) * 2 = 12kHz

I also read that you can only double the frequency if the max frequency is known. But it is not known in this case. Please helpWe prefer not to help with HOMEWORK here. SORRY.

Solve : Virtual Machine Internet connection problem...?

Answer»

I have a question to anyone out there... how can i connect virtual machine to internet CONNECTION? my host is Windows 7 and my VM is XP, im using Virtual Box...There are several modes for network connections in VirtualBox; I'll describe just 2.
NAT processes all network requests from the VM and communicates them to the internet. You will not be able to access the local network except by IP Address (if even that) because it will usually be on a different subnet, network, etc.
Bridged Networking CAUSES the VM to use your network adapter directly. This allows it to communicate on the network more easily because it will appear as if your network adapter has two computers running on it. This is necessary to run the guest as a SERVER or to read files off the local network. I've had to use this to run shared files on my host PC inside the guest PC to test them.

TL;DR: Just internet access? NAT should be fine. LAN access from inside the VM? Try bridged networking.

On the VM Settings, open Network Adapters.

Using NAT (the default): Select NAT and press OK.
Using Bridged Networking: Select Bridged Adapter, and select your network adapter from the list. Then press OK

If both of these don't work, you have a different problem (such as a firewall blocking the VM.)both your suggestions didn't work I tried to unblock the Firewall but in didn't work too, do you have any idea why this happend?Sounds like a bit more is GOING on than a simple internet connection here.

What kind of network adapter do you have; what sort of connection does your host have to the internet and through what routing devices or hubs; and does your host connect through a proxy server? Some of these configurations settings may be different on the guest PC from the host.i've figured it out I actually did a device manager check and found out that the network adapter isn't detected, so I changed the virtual adapter of the VM and it works just fine now...Good to know it's fixed. I actually had that problem with one of my VMs and completely forgot about it

Solve : about internal server...?

Answer»

guys i just want to ask, what is an internal server? you see, i cant search a direct meaning of internal server, all I see is internal server error in google searches..can someone explain the meaning and the significance of internal server... or could this be a broader topic...I too have only dealt with "Internal Server Error" messages before myself. But depending on its use "Internal Server" can be MANY meanings depending on how a programmer wanted to use that statement for an error alert on whatever PROGRAM they wrote. If it was more defined such as Internal Server Error in regards to a specific application you might get better RESULTS. Such as Apache Internal Server Error. Which is where I have seen this before myself working with Apache servers. You're grouping the words incorrectly. It's not an error in an "internal server". It's an internal error in a server. Typically you'll see that if a web server has been misconfigured or has been sent a request it doesn't know how to handle.Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on September 25, 2012, 09:44:00 AM

Basically, the user has little or no control over the error; It is up to the website owner to fix the problem.
@approach_is_positive: are the '500 Internal Server Error' messages from google.com or the websites you're trying to get to?actually i'm just asking what's an "internal server"Quote from: approach_is_positive on October 04, 2012, 10:32:36 PM

That's not what the message is about, and there isn't any such thing that's relevant to your ACTUAL question.

Solve : Using a computer on two networks simultaneously?

Answer»

I need to use some of my office computers on two different networks. Both the networks are on CABLE and provide static IP addresses.

I have gone by the tips given on another thread and put two NETWORK cards on the PCs which need these connections. Now I am able to connect only to one network at a time. Network A has to be disabled to be able to connect to Network B, and vice versa.

Is there a solution to this problem that will let me stay connected on both the networks simultaneousl? I need to use only Internet Explorer on Network A and Outlook Mail on Network B.Quote from: ganeshnag75 on JULY 14, 2012, 09:13:02 PM

Can you not join the two networks with a switch? Or something similiar. As I understand, a switch does not assign IP addresses, it LEAVES it to the server to do the assigning. In my case, I have two different set of static IPs for the two networks. Can a switch be used in such a scenario?I believe with static IP's for each network, you will 2 LAN cards, one for each network. With Windows, at least, you cannot control which network connection is used on a per application or per service basis.

Solve : Hardline works, wireless is not.?

Answer»

My wireless has been problem free for a while, but recently (I assume) something changed on my computer to affect my wireless. I am RECEIVING very spotty SIGNALS, while our wired connection works FINE. I tried to do a system restore but that didnt help.

I have a linysys wusb600n version 2 adapter and a 2wire 2701hg-g router. I run windows 7 64 bit

Basically what happens is the connection works sometimes, but cuts out very often and at times for hours on end. I am able to access the router and the signal stays strong the entire time, so there must be some setting which is preventing it from working properly. As far as I can tell, nothing has changed. The drivers on my adapter are up to date. I am writing this post from our wired computer so if you need any other information please let me know and I can fetch it.

Thank you for reading.

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Have you tried reinstalling the usb adapter driver? ipconfig/release then ipconfig/renew IP address on cmd on each command given and see if it makes a difference. Can you run ipconfig/all on ONE of the wired or wireless computer able to connect to your 2wire router?I think the issue was just a few days of instability on their side, although that doesnt account for the wireless not working while the direct line did. It may be coincidence when i checked or just human error.

I turned everything off for about 2 minutes and then back on, and it worked for about half an hour until it died. This morning it is working fine, but I guess Ill update if anything changes.

Yes, I updated the drivers on the adapter (they were the same as what I had, but I replaced them .Alright, so it wasnt my imagination and after working for a short while the problem came back. This time the ethernet does work but the wifi does not.

I tried ipconfig /release and renew on the connected computer but had no luck.

On the wifi connection the commands pull an error saying local connection 3 media disconnect. I dont know if this is normal or not, but I figure extra information cant hurt.

So to explain the problem briefly:
The wifi sometimes works, but only for short periods and then it stops. The signal is perfect the entire time.
this entire time, the internet works through ethernet.
The ipconfig /all listed above is from the wireless computer. One last update, I have a feeling the problem is from my adapter suddenly overheating.

When the internet last cut off I took the adapter out and felt its business end, and it was pretty warm. I left it off for a while and it worked when I plugged it back in. Unplugging and re plugging it in usually do nothing, but I was sure to cool it this time.

I am contemplating breaking the outer case to allow airflow, but I'm wondering if there are any other suggestions.

Wouldn't it be easier to GET a new WiFi adapter? I assume it is USB? An internal adapter card will generally run cooler. You can get a new one for about $10.

The above post makes no sense, and I'm 99% sure it doesn't work.

You should have an icon the taskbar that LOOKS like a CELL phone signal strength -- click that. What comes up is a list of all wireless networks in range; you need to talk to your friend, or whoever manages the wifi there, what the connection name and password are. Click the connection name in the list (it might be easy, like YourFriendsLastName, or hard, like myqwest3897) and the click Connect. After that it should ask for a password, type it in and continue. You should at this point be connected to the internet.

Solve : Why does my IP address keep getting blacklisted??

Answer» HI guys for about 2 weeks now my IP address to a few websites keeps getting blocked so therefore I cannot access these sites, I've checked blacklistings and tested my IP and it comes up as blacklisted on a few of them.

I've reseted my router and then it's ok I get a new IP address and I can access the sites but about an hour later I'm blocked again and no access.

Have I been hacked or something for this to be reoccuring even after changing my IP address?
I never open anything unusual in emails nor do I visit strange sites, I have a decent firewall and anti virus with a good detection rate yet a full scan says nothing.

Thanks. Paul.sounds like a security SETTING issue to be honest I've never heard of an IP address getting blacklisted unless they are sites that have been ASSOCIATED with engaging in malware INFECTION. It sounds like your ISP is using dynamic IP's ... and someone else on the network, is abusing them. Contact your ISP, they will investigate and hopefully stop the other users abusing their systems.so if they are abusing IP's then his computer must be included? or are they just messing around with changing people's IP's? always good to hear another opinion or answer. thanks gjmayQuote from: gjmay12 on July 16, 2012, 07:33:08 PM

They're abusing the IP's given to them from the ISP.
The ISP cycles IP's through its customers, you have a dynamic IP.
The IP changes when you restart your router, or lose connection, etc.

Google ISP dynamic IP's for more info.

His computer is most likely, not, the cause.

I've LOOKED it up and it seems LIKE a lot of the solutions have me using the command line witch I'm not great with. Anyways If someone COULD just help me find the right steps to TAKE to fix this that would be great thanks. Why are you installing Ubuntu 10? It's not even SUPPORTED anymore. Try installing a more recent version of Ubuntu which has support for newer hardware. Doing a very cursory google on your card, it sounds like support might be an issue for it. I'd suggest heading to Amazon and getting a cheap USB wireless card that reviewers say works out of the box with Ubuntu, it will save you a nightmare of a hassle.Quote from: rockstar4cs on September 26, 2012, 11:49:41 AM

It looks like you've already found the right steps. Use the command line. (Or as the previous poster suggests, try an upgrade.)

Solve : How to display on a laptop?

Answer»

Hi ALL,

I have to CPU without keyboard, mouse, monitor. I want to connect to the laptop to see display on it. How can I achieve this.

ThanksWhy do this? Old monitors are available free in some places.
Please make your question better.
Do you have one monitor already and want to add the laptop as a second monitor?
What operating systems?
Do you what a console or a GUI?
In Linux the display of one computer can be the console of another computer. MEANING..I have 2 CPU and I want to check what is in it? With the help of VGA cable can i see display on laptop screen CONNECTING to CPU VGA port. No, the laptop VGA port is a OUTPUT, not an input.

What you need is a VGA to USB VIDEO Grabber
http://sewelldirect.com/VGA-to-USB-Video-Grabber.asp?gclid=CJKT_smWorECFaEJRQodOG-7lA

But the device is rather rare and costs about $330.

You should just get a monitor. Used ones are cheap or free.
Meaning..I have 2 CPUYou could use a 2 way KVM switch and thus be able to use one mouse/one keyboard/and one monitor to access both computers alternatively. Very inexpensive method.truenorthWhen he writes "I have 2 CPU" I believe he means "I have 2 computer system boxes".

This is not a CPU

Solve : Cant connect please help?

Answer»

I installed windows xp on my DESKTOP and it SAYS i can not connect to the internet. You need to provide a lot more information, but let's START with come basics:

1) WHY did you have to install the OS?
2) Was it a clean (fresh) install?
3) If so, did you install all drivers starting with the chipset driver?

Try to give us as much background about what is going on and about your system as you can.new hard-drive, everything seemed to install ok, and ill check to see if it has the right network drives or whatever. If you didn't install them, it doesn't. Go to the website of the computer (or motherboard) manufacturer and download and install the chipset driver. Then go to the websites of your display driver manufacturer, sound card manufacturer and ETHERNET card manufacturer (if relevant) and do the same THING. If this is a name brand computer you can just go to the website of the computer manufacturer and obtain all drivers there.

Solve : How to identify who got Printout?

Answer» DEAR Friends,
In my office there are 08 MACHINES, and only i have the administrative privilege. There is a printer shared with all machines. I need to KNOW are there any software's to count number of printouts and identify the user.
Si raj indicate your printer friend. it will depend on the feature of the printer like NEC 3300N (a network printer) it indicates there the user who is printing. for the the number of print outs. not with the number of print outs.Look at the manual for your printer and that should provide the answers. You can also look at the WINDOWS Print Spooler Log of the computer sharing the printer but I'm not sure how far that goes back.Start here: http://duckduckgo.com/?q=print+management+windows+server

Solve : Help with port forwarding?

Answer»

I have tried just about everything. I have a FOSCAM IP Wireless Camera that I have a LAN IP for. I have also SET up a domain with no-ip.com that's a DNS host for my ip.

So when I go to my domain, I get sent to the LOGIN page for my router. I am trying to set up port forwarding so I can put in my domain plus :80 at the end and forward it to the LAN ip of my camera. Basically so I can view my camera online. I've sep up a port forward in my router (I think correctly) but it still directs to the router login page when I type :80 at the end.

I've used this tool: http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ to try figure out if my port 80 is open but it is not. I have set an INBOUND rule in my advanced settings in windows firewall (Windows 7), but still nothing. When I go to command prompt and type "netstat -ao" I don't see port 80 even on the list?? So I have no clue why it is closed or what program could be using it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Solve : Interesting Speeds in an Apartment?

Answer» SOOO:

I'm living in a college residence with 400 people. When beginning a download, stream, or connection the speed at which information is travelling starts quick (500kbps - 1mbps) but drops down to approximately 20kbps in no time. When torrenting/downloading magnets, speeds are always decent (hitting 800kbps consistently), depending on the number of seeders of course.

I'm wondering if there is any possibility that the connections in the suites are being throttled in some way.

Over this past summer, there was approximately 50 people staying in the residence and speeds were no better than when 400 people were living there.

The residences bandwidth has been upgraded from 40mbps to 50mbps this past month, and I can not say I noticed a difference.

I'm not looking for a set SOLUTION, just trying to gather tips and information on what COULD be causing slow speeds and possible ideas on what I could try (I am an employee within the residence)Yes, it is possible that downloads are being throttled, especially torrent downloads. If I were a college BOFH, I would definitely set torrenting speeds to minimum. Well, high enough to give students hope, but low enough to really tick them off. Have you spoken to your local system administrators? Many ISPs throttle P2P traffic. Mine, Virginmedia (UK) does.
I'll talk to the I.T. that TAKES care of the building, we actually don't have techs come in OFTEN. When the internet's down, my boss (the general manager) is on the phone running from IT room to IT room in the building, quite humorous and ironic in it's own way.

Thanks for the replies!

Solve : Losing internet connection during idle time?

Answer»

I have an HP p6733w-b desktop with AMD Phenom II 511, 3.4 ghz dual core, 5 gb DDR3, Windows 7 Home Premium with all updates and Internet Explorer 8. I have Norton Internet Security 2012, Super Antispyware, and Malwarebytes. My internet is AT&T DSL. My router is A Belkin N+. My main computer is hard wired to the router but I also have ANOTHER computer ethernet hard wired to it and at least 2 more COMPUTERS, a WII, and other devices that connect wirelessly. The internet or network disconnects most of the time on the main computer when I leave the computer idle for a while. When I try to reconnect or troubleshoot, I am told that no connections are available. All of the other computers, WII, Internet DVD players, etc. are not affected and maintain their internet connectivity. The only way to reconnect is for me to reboot. When I reboot, it takes a long time for the computer to shut down. I am considering wiping the hard drive and completely starting over, but wanted to ask you guys if you have any suggestions that I could try; i.e., reinstalling Internet Explorer, reinstalling networks or something? I do not lose connection as long as I am actively on the internet, only when the computer is idle. All my devices have been unplugged and rebooted several times since this started but that doesn't resolve anything. Try these in order.

1. Try a different port on the router, swap the main PC with another computer's port.
2. Reinstall your network card drivers.
3. Restart the router.
4. RESET the router.

If none of these work, I can offer more..I haven't abandoned my question. I am testing the things you recommended to see if my computer continues to lose connection. It takes time, so I'll return when I've tried them all. Thanks.Good evening

This sounds and awfully lot like a IP conflict, or a HOT router or a miss-configured router.

You can also try this shut down ONE of the desktops that is having the issue and unplug the cat cable and reboot the PC if it boots normally and shuts down normally it is in your router more than likely or you have a bad cat cable etc.

Hope this helps. Quote from: hartbeatmr on July 20, 2012, 03:47:57 PM

Not misconfigured, or the other connected devices would also fail.
Not a 'hot router' for the same reasons.

I've already mentioned cables...

And an IP conflict would take out one of the other connected devices.

Solve : Internet is super slow all of a sudden (months!), intermittently/rarely fast?

Answer»

My BrightHouse internet connection is extremely slow, 0.4ms. Once in a blue moon it will start going a reasonable speed (5.4ms), which lasts about 10 minutes, and then it's back to being awful. I have changed the router twice, the modem once, and nothing seems to work. I've also reconfigured every computer's IP address. When I called BrightHouse, they say that on their end, the connection is just fine.

I use a Macbook Pro, but we have two PCs and one other LAPTOP in the house, and none of them work. When the PC is connected directly into the modem, the internet works normally.
When my Mac is plugged directly in, it is still slow. Because of this, BrightHouse told me that the problem was that I need to reformat my Mac, which doesn't make any sense at all because my laptop works perfectly fine at other peoples' houses and at school.. Plus the Windows laptop doesn't respond either.

Another thing is, before the IPs were reconfigured, one computer was getting an "IP Address Conflict" error, which is why I did that in the first place. However, it does not seem to have worked. Anyway, when all of the computers are off except for one, it still runs just as slow.

Help! This has been going on for MONTHS. It is very difficult for me to get school work done. I'm thinking of just switching to AT&T because not even our computer-wiz neighbor can figure this problem out. Any ideas?Welcome to CH.
IMHO you would be better off with AT&T instated of a company that tells you to FORMAT .your drive.
AT&T DSL is mediocre, but you get top-notch tech support.
When getting a ISP, look for these points:
1. High Speed.
2. Reliability.,
3. Smart Tech Support
4. Low-Cost.
5. Net Neutrality.
The best you can hope for is mabe 4 put of 5.

Does your ISP require you to use a static IP address rather than automatic or DHCP?It is currently DHCP. I think you have to pay extra for BH to issue you a static IP, which we have not done.also, everything worked perfectly fabulous two months ago, and then it just started getting progressively intermittently SLOWER and slower and now its finally hit a plateau where it's just slow all the dang time.Maybe you need to replace the NETWORK cable for wired connection this time since you've mentioned having the modem and router already replaced. Also the ADSL filter might need to be checked or replace also just in case.Good evening npomeroy

In my area Brighthouse is not available are they a DSL or cable? sorry I don't know

If they are DSL you may have a noise issue because DSL connections are very sensitive to line noise. If so there can be a bad phone / phone line / bad filter / phone jack etc.

If Brighthouse is cable company what kind of cable modem did they give you? Also do you have a AIO package TV, internet, phone etc? In my area for roadrunner they have had issues with the AIO boxes for there HOME services.

Is the cable modem getting warm and I am assuming that your router is not directly on top of cable modem? so the heat is not transferred from one to another. By the way this is not meant as an insult or being a wiseguy

Another thing that may help, is your cable modem doing the router duty and if so is the router set up as just a gateway - AP

If you are set in your router as DHCP coming in (from your ISP) and If I am understanding your reply correct Static on the computers in house and if they are static in house did the IP's get set outside the DCHP IP table. What I mean is If your router DHCP's table is (for computers in house) from say 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.150 the static IP's you used were in-between 192.168.1.101 to 192.168.1.149 but this is not including any reserved IP's. Also a reserved IP can be set for say maybe your printer etc. I am pretty sure that you are aware you can not have any two PC's or Printers with the same IP address.

I do see that you said you have replaced the router but out of curiosity what model router?

Hopefully with all the info that are in all of theses postings it will help you get your issue fixed.

Good luck and let us know how it goes. Mike

I hope this posting with all the other ideas here help you, Hopefully I am putting this post in such a way that makes since. Good luck Mike

Solve : chrome os linux on windows domain?

Answer»

Is there anyway to have a chrome os linux LAPTOP join a Windows domain? I am trying to BRING new life to older laptops. Certainly not easily, if at all. Particularly with Chrome OS.When you say "join to a Windows domain", which SERVICES are you trying to use? Kerboros AUTHENTICATION? CIFS? Email? You may well be able to achieve your desired results by some other means (e.g. VectorLinux). It is Windows Server 2003, the active directory is used to handle the student and teacher accounts and files and to keep TRACK of the computers on the network. There is no mail since the student and teachers have their own mail as well as mail through our school website. The users would need to log onto the schools domain using their name and password and have access to their files.

The OS is am testing is found here: http://chromeos.hexxeh.net/

It works on my personal laptop at home, I have to try it on the older laptops in school.

Thanks.Whatever the case, on a Linux-based OS, you need to use winbind and/or smbclient. Samba/winbind brings you "net use" tools. There's a good write-up here: http://www.brentnorris.net/samba2005.html It's a bit out of date, but the principles still apply. I'm just not sure how readily available the Samba packages are under Chrome OS.It may all be moot, I can not load the Chromium linux os on the laptop, it is missing pae. I was able to install Vector and that worked just great at home. Brought the laptop to school for further testing and even though the wireless network name and password are put in correctly the connection times out. Not sure if it is because the network is hidden, but the laptop just will not connect.

The wireless manager shows the hidden network, I can changed the config for the network but the connection only times out saying bad password. I have been using this same password for the last 10 years. It works on other laptops.

I am using the Gold version, I will try less intense versions tomorrow.

Solve : Re: What to do while waiting for a reply to question?

Answer»

can you help me . i want remote access on the client desktop software .MANY options out there RDP, VNC, GotoMyPC, Crossloop, PC Anywhere.... You will need the client physically to accept connections on 2 of the 5 listed. RDP, VNC, and PC Anywhere are accessible if you have credentials without user allowing/disallowing, however RDP locks out the current user while VNC and PC Anywhere allows for concurrent access. VNC is free to use for home users although for Windows 7 I believe you have to buy a license.

VNC use to be my favorite method until my one SERVER got hit by BlackVNC when running 3.7. An update to latest FIXES for BlackVNC exploit.

I have used 4 of the 5 above. Haven't used gotomypc but its out there. My favorite for friends and family tech support was crossloop in which you have to be on phone or chat room to share the 6 digit passcode to enter the clients machine. The clients machine generated a passcode and the code is GOOD for only a certain period of time and you enter that code in at your END as the person giving support and you are then given access to their system, (display, keyboard, mouse).

In order to have access you need to know the credentials or contact the client for them. There is no help here for hacking into peoples systems.

Solve : Please help me! Very weird connection issue.?

Answer»

Hey! i just got my computer less than a month ago, desktop
for the first 3 weeks, it worked flawlessly, and connected with my Wifi with no problems. All of a sudden, it started to take longer to connect for some reason.

Now, it randomly disconnects and stays disconnected for some reason. ALL other computers in the house are PERFECTLY connected, so the router is definitely not the problem.
Also, i'm using a USB network adapter that is also new.

I currently have AVG anti virus and the standard Windows firewall so i'm not sure what could be stopping the connection. Windows 7 OS.
It says i'm connected, but there is a yellow exclamation saying No internet access, and sometimes saying limited connectivity. Also, it will Re-connect after 30MINS to an hour by it's self. I am so confused. Could it be someone trying to use my wireless connection? doubtful, since the password is very complicated.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions on how to fix this problem. Very frustrated! Any advice is more than welcome. Thanks! Have you tried reinstalling the USB wifi adapter setup driver? No i haven't. I will try doing that now.
In that time, any other suggestions? Thanks! will keep you updated.Well if you are not satisfied with the adapter and still under warranty, you could always return it for a REPLACEMENT. Although you forgot to mention what brand/model is it together with your router.I tried uninstalling the program and re-installing, nothing has changed. The network adapter is the ASUS USB-N13 802.11n, the Router is one given by VERIZON.
I really don't think the problem lies with the router, since all other computers in the house work perfectly. I believe that somewhere in the firewall settings, or AVG settings, that there is something blocking the signal.
I really don't know.
Do you get a good signal? How far is your desktop from the router? Have you tried power cycling the modem/router and with your computer also? The signal is excellent when i'm connected, and is never inbetween. What do you mean cycling?
and also, do you think it could be a firewall problem? Power down the modem for a minute or two together with your PC. Let them re establish connection and see if that changes anything.
Quote

do you think it could be a firewall problem?
I don't think it would affect directly since its the adapter communicating to the router. Worth a shot though if you feel disabling these feature and check the difference.
Okay. The internet is working now, and it just turned on again by random. : /
I will try the modem/PC turn off as well. My modem and router is located downstairs. The desktop which is wired directly from router is located UPSTAIRS together with the laptop (connected by wireless). I always have to make sure a LAN connection is available by my room just in case the wifi connection is acting up. So I'll have 2 options for wired and wireless just in case since the desktop is stationary. I would also look into using a USB wireless adapter for the desktop but would keep the cable on standby.

Solve : 4 wireless pc's problem?

Answer»

Greetings - I am trying to add another pc to my wireless lan but can't get it to connect. Here is what I've got:

Modem connected to XP Pro Core2duo

Dlink Gamer Lounge Router DGL 4300

1 Windows 7 I3 TP Link 150Mbps Wireless N Adapter
2 Windows XP Pro core2Duo - Dlink DWA 510 Wireless G Desktop Adapter
3 Asus Laptop EEE 900HA XP Pro

These three are secured by pc #2's Dlink software. The fourth pc is an XP Pro dual core with a Dlink DWL G510 Adapter. It seems this adapter is no longer supported but has been working OK in the past on pc #2. Since I can't get it to connect to the secure network after many attempts at all of the possible Windows options and settings and Dlink software, I bought a new ASUS USB-N13 Wireless-N Adapter thinking my Dlink card was crapped out. Now I can't get this new adapter to connect either. It finds the secured connection but will not connect. It comes back either with an encryption error or it says out of range. Here is the Encryption - WPA-PSK/TKIP (also known as WPA Personal). The distance is only about 30 feet and one thin wood wall to go through. The unsecured connection I had showed an excellent connection too. When I get these windows, I don't get the screen to put in my secured password. Earlier I had a new un-secured connection on this pc, but it screwed up my secured connections on the other three. So I fixed the secured ones again and now I need to know what the heck this old pc wants. I would prefer to use the old Dlink internal card if possible, but the new USB would be fine too if necessary. Every time I have to do this, it's a struggle to get it done right with all of the various windows to check out for various settings. All help is greatly appreciated.

Jim

On the one that is not connecting what happens and what message do you get when you execute the "repair" FUNCTION on your connection?truenorthWindows woodworking is never easy, Except for those people that never have problems.
You can fully uninstall the adapter. Restart Windows and do the network wizard all over again. And this timeline, put the computer near the router. You MAY have to restart the router.
Once you get the connection, put the router and computer back in place.

Also, it there are other wireless things in your area, you should change the channel. Is does matter. Sometimes.

Repair just says it can't do it. I've un-installed the adapter and re-installed both of them depending which one was being used at that time, and that didn't help. There is something wrong between the four of them as when I do get #4 connected as Dlink and not secured, that seems to blow away my secured connections to the others. Also, on some of the pc's still show the OLD connection SSID, so how do I get rid of those? I've removed them from one of the Windows options but they still show up sometimes. Could there be a conflict some place there with the old connections?

JimGood evening frog

If I am reading your post correct you are having an issue changing the sec key.
Can't you go into the Dlink software pick the network ssid and then modify that profile then put in your sec key that you set up? for your network.

Plus I am assuming that your network is set up as such.
Cable modem > Router > then all PC's are connected to the router thru the wireless

Hope this help you, Mike
UPDATE - I been messing with these pc's and finally got them all connected to my new Dlink UN-SECURED connection, so it seems things go to *censored* when I try to make this connection secured. So there is no problem with any distance between them and the router. One of the ORIGINAL Windows errors was something about encryption. Referring to my original post above, pc #2, #3, and #4 were previously secured before adding the new pc #1, so I'm guessing that the new technology in that pc might be screwing up the older ones. Might just be a setting or something, but I'm not Windows 7 literate yet, so I don't know where to go without screwing up something else. Any ideas on this is appreciated. The most likely cause of the problem is having to use a security of WEP or WPA/WPA2 which some of the computer OS or adapter might not support since running without encryption have them connected. The SSID should be understood is your own router access point. Try also going to this link, just in case : http://www.mydigitallife.info/unable-and-cannot-connect-to-wpa-and-wpa2-encrypted-wireless-wi-fi-network-in-windows-xp/Hey Jason, that link looks like the solution for me. Thanks, I'll start messing with it and see what happens. jason2074,
Excellent post and link.
That explains a lot of things about XP wireless.Yes it sure does and when i read it i said this is going to solve the issue.Well done jason2074.truenorthThanks. Hopefully frog would resolve the problem finally.I just now got all pc's on a new secured network, which was the original problem. I used one of the XP's to do it since I'm familiar with the Dlink adapters and their utility PROGRAM. The TP Link adapter utility for W7 doesn't seem to be on the system. I don't know what happened, or how it happened, or why, but all are now secured and problem solved. Must have been a setting someplace that got the right tweek this time. Thanks to all of the input here.

Solve : Subdomain system on server network?

Answer»

Ok, so here i go

I will be RUNNING some dell rack mount SERVERS very soon, and i would very much so like to take care of setting up the sub domains to them myself from another server in my network, if possible.

I have heard of the functionality for websites using a built in feature to apache, which i would also like to know more about, but my my main concern is the fact of how i can create sub domains to route to different computers on the same network.

Something like in this summary:

192.168.1.101 runs main website (of the default domain of domain.net)
192.168.1.102 runs sub domains to the rest of the servers
192.168.1.103 runs server, accessible publicly through domain.net, game server. (port 25565)
192.168.1.103 runs server, accessible publicly through 104.domain.net or so running a game server (port 25566)
192.168.1.104 runs server, accessible publicly through 105.domain.net or so running another game server (port 25567)
192.168.1.105 runs server, accessible publicly through 106.domain.net or so running yet another game server (port 25568)

i would like the sub domains to re-direct to the address of the server with a port, so the user does not type in the port. however, have the same sub-domains on the website, as to have the web server have the map of
192.168.1.101 has sub domain 104.domain.net direct to a website folder of /var/www/104/
192.168.1.101 has sub domain 105.domain.net direct to a website folder of /var/www/105/
192.168.1.101 has sub domain 106.domain.net direct to a website folder of /var/www/106/
192.168.1.101 has subdomain mc.domain.net direct to a website folder of /var/www/mc/
192.168.1.101 has subdomain mchosting.domain.net direct to a website folder of /var/www/mchosting/
192.168.1.101 has subdomain kat.domain.net direct to a website folder of /var/www/kat/

A setup like this would make me happy right now, but if ANYONE knows of a better way to make this, please do let me know, thanks.

ubuntu 11.10
apache/2.2.20 (ubuntu)
can install other packages if needed, thanks. Good evening zeroburn

Are all the servers you have listed other than 192.168.1.101 box real servers or will some of them going to be virtual?

Mike These servers are all actual servers with MOTHERBOARD and whatnot. Although learning how to make the virtual servers work with a domain would not be a bad route as well, if you have links, i will read through the information

Right now, i am mainly concerned with the subdomains pointing to other real machines in the network

Solve : Wireless Networking PC?

Answer»

Basically, just wondering if I can connect my Router to my Modem without haveing to run a CAT 5E. Just wondered what had to be the same on the router so that it can see the modem an let my other wired machine connect too it.Welcome to CH.
Are you now using DSL? What did you have before?

One provider PUTS it this way:
Quote

Using the provided Ethernet cable, connect the modem TON the WAN of your wireless router. Both the modem and ant router must be off. You rcomputer should be connected to one of the LAN ports of the router. Then computer also should be in the power off state.
Next turn on the power in this order:
1. Turn on the modem, wait 30 seconds.
2. Turn of the router and wait 30 seconds.
3. Last turn on your computer and let it do the normal start-up. This may TAKE two minutes for some computers.
Talking with the support people, this has to be done one time for the modem to 'learn' what kind of router your have.
Have you asked your support people?

Then, put your router in the same room as your router (it's wireless, I presume) and connect it to your modem VIA cable. For a computer in another room that does not have built-in wireless capability, get a wireless PCI card or USB wireless dongle so that you can connect that computer to the Internet via your wireless router.

Solve : Does using wireless track activity??

Answer»

Will using the home wireless from a phone or laptop track the activity to the computer? If so, where? THANKS. Are you looking to track the activity of the Wireless devices, or the wired ones?

I'm assuming the computer you've mentioned is wired into a WiFi router on a ADSL broadband connection.

The short anwser is: probably not.

The long answer is: maybe, depending on how the network is setup.

If you're looking to set something up, please let us know more about exactly what you're trying to achive.it will track a lap but maybe not your phone depending on how your SECURITY is set up, you are trying to prevent tracking on your phone and lap, correct???.........................gettingthereGood evening mej0709 and welcome to CH

If I am understanding your question correct you are wondering if anyone (your ISP)(Cell phone company) is tracking you and if so how?

If you are hooking your laptop thru your cellphone (like tethering) then chances being "yes you are" most smart phones have a GPS CHIP and IMEI most cell phone companies will tell you that you are NOT being tracked but they can do it and if court ordered can do so.

If you are not running the laptop thru your cell phone and your laptop is on your home network like connected to your home router and that goes to your (ISP's) cable / DSL modem well once again yes they can but only while you are on your home network and really you are not physically moving anywhere they can track all web sites, files downloaded etc. All ISP's have to keep track off every customer because if they are Court ordered they have to turn the info over to the courts.

If you are using your home wireless network for SURFING the internet with your cell phone than the same hold true about the above with the ISP (internet provider) will still keep track of what web sites, files downloaded etc. The ISP will also know it was done with a cell because of the IMEI which is uniquely identifiable to each cell phone.

Well I hope this helps to answer your questions and hopefully doesn't make you to paranoid.

Hello
I am setting up a free wireless internet using router for a Coffee SHOP. as it will be free then everyone can connect. i WANT to mange user connected and limit the internet for costumers of the shop.
can you introduce best software for managing the wireless network and its users ?
thank you

is there a software that manage wireless network look like Bluetooth.
when a Bluetooth device try to connect to PC, the manager software on PC creates a code for the Device. when the PC verifies the code then the device can connect.
do you know any software that has this feature for wireless network?PLEASE use separate threads for multiple unrelated questions.

To answer your first - if you use a Linux box with a wireless network card, you can provide browser-based access to wifi using something like ChiliBox: http://www.chillispot.info/. Or you can install the OpenWRT router FIRMWARE on certain routers: http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/wireless.hotspot

This article lists a few alternatives: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-howto/30150-how-to-build-an-open-source-wi-fi-hotspot-with-dd-wrtthank you for replying

Solve : Help with router to router wifi security?

Answer»

Hi,

At home I have a tenda router (not WIRELESS) which is then connected to a wireless tenda router. I sort of inherited this setup. I've had the two ROUTERS connected to each other for a while now and have been using the wireless internet with the yellow unsecured badge showing and I want to get rid of it.

I am computer savvy enough to know how to hardwire into the router, do the admin/admin thing, go into security settings change it to WPA2, choose my password etc. But when I finish doing this I am able to CONNECT to the wireless but I have no internet access.

I am unsure of whether both routers need to both be passworded? Does the wireless router need a password on it? Or just the ONE feeding the wireless router? Is there some other setting which needs to be coordinated between the routers so I can have secure wifi?

I have experimented around hardwiring into each router and changing the security settings but always end up in the same situation of being able to connect to the wifi but having no internet access. If I choose unsecured then I have my wifi with internet access back.

Any help appreciated.Wireless router should preferably be in bridge mode. If it has a DHCP server, it should be set to give the other router's IP address as the default gateway.

Does that help?

Solve : D-link n750 setup problems?

Answer»

hey guys i just bought a new dlink n750 router, and im having some problems setting it up
i followed the installation tutorial via the cd, and SUPPOSEDLY SET up the 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands, however only the 2.4ghz one shows up.

-im not SURE where to look for the software or w.e to check whether the 5ghz band is hidden, as the setup cd didnt seem to install anything?
-despite being able to connect to the 2.4ghz, my download speed is terrible/non-existent. this is a problem because im trying to deal with an entire other can of worms on another computer, and im trying to download drivers for that one from here. The downloads start, but they promptly lag out and stop (est. download time goes through the roof).

can someone possibly walk me through this setup again/point me in the right direction/shoot me a link to a guide/tutorial for this? i couldnt really find anything USEFUL via a PRELIMINARY search

Solve : I have no drivers/soft for USB modem Ktech K190.?

Answer»

Hello, I just PURCHASED a USB 3.5G modem - model: K190 made by KTech and I need its drivers/software.
It doesn't work (EXCEPT the extra SD memory card capability) as it doesn't have any drivers or software on it, CONTRARY to what the store clerk said, maybe there's a defect because I already tried it on two different laptops.
Certainly, it didn't come with any CD or manual nor can I give it back. The company doesn't have any website and there are no drivers to be found on the INTERNET.. I spent hours looking for the modem's drivers..
I would be very grateful if somebody could help me out and if possible, send me the software/driver of this modem to my email address: [emailprotected]
If somebody from this website doesn't help me, I will have to throw it away:( I paid $25 for it.. I realize that for some folks it's nothing, but I'm quite poor and I can't AFFORD to buy another model..
Thank you for your time and help in advance.

Solve : Wireless set up?

Answer»

Hi there, I'm MOVING to university in the next few days, and I've been informed the HALLS I'm staying in come standard with a 10mb broadband connection via an Ethernet port, but some former students have informed me I can convert this to make it WIRELESS. What would I need to BUY to do this? A router? Or a wireless access point? Or do I need to do more than just plug one of those in?
ThanksA wireless router. Not a router. A WAP will be sufficient, given that you have an ethernet port. Many of these are pretty much plug and play - very easy to set up and use. EG:

http://www.misco.co.uk/product/164579/TP-Link-Wireless-N-150Mbps-Access-Point
http://www.misco.co.uk/product/Q122554/D-Link-Wireless-G-Open-Source-Access-Point
http://www.misco.co.uk/product/164207/ZyXEL-WAP3205-802-11n-Wireless-Access-Point

Personally, I would avoid the cheap and nasty option, but that might be adequate and within budget for student uses. Plus, the chances are that someone else will already have done this in a nearby room and you might be able to share the access point and the cost. Thanks for the help

Solve : Team up NICs to X Bandwidth??

Answer»

There was a discussion many years ago that this guy claimed at a computer show to have teamed up NICs between 2 systems to have 200mbps bandwidth between 2 systems in a peer-to-peer running linux, where each computer tower had 2 NICs and each computer was networked together with 2 cross over cables. I was thinking about this today as I was LOOKING over one of my computers with 2 NICs and was thinking I wonder how hard it would be to team NICs and multiply bandwidth between them using cross over cables that wont compete for bandwidth thru a shared switch which would bottleneck at 100mbps if a 100mbps switch. Each cable has dedicated 100mbps bandwidth with nothing to compete with.

Has anyone done this or seen it done to explain how you do this? I am interested in trying this out if it can be done easily. The guy stated that this is SIMILAR to an earlier project in which 2 x 56k modems were teamed to give 106k bandwidth due to 53k limit of 56k modems, with 106kbps connection to the internet thru 2 independent connections to ISP using 2 phone lines.

I was thinking about doing this with 2 computers both with Gigabit NICs to have potentially 2000mbps bandwidth between them if its doable. I prefer MS OS, but have knowledge of Linux as well. Reason for MS choice is that most applications I have that can use better bandwidth are MS compatible software with local file sharing.I've never seen or heard of this myself, but when thinking about it I still think that there is going to be a bottleneck somewhere in the line that would limit the connection.

  • First, doing this on a broadband connection It's likely that you're only going to be getting at most around 10MB down, which is plenty for one 100MB cable can card to support without needing an extra card.
  • Second, most websites and services will limit how much each visitor can download. Usually you're going to probably only get a max of a few hundred KB from one site and maybe lucky to get up to 5MB from some sites and download services. Having an extra card on the same network is going to share the same IP (I'd imagine) so it wouldn't be possible to bypass this for a single site.
  • Finally, if this is possible I'd imagine you'd only get support and steps on how to do it in Linux and not Windows (if it was even possible in Windows).

All of that being said, I really don't think something like this would be applicable or useful for broadband Internet. Unless maybe you're one of the lucky few that has a fiber connection (e.g. Google dark fiber @ Gb a sec) that could be more than once network card could handle or you're someone who is file sharing, gaming, and browsing the web all at the same time on one computer.
Quote
I was thinking about doing this with 2 computers both with Gigabit NICs to have potentially 2000mbps bandwidth between them if its doable.

Yah if it was doable it was going to be between 2 systems locally peer-to-peer as for if attached outbound it would be bottlenecked as you stated as well as if connected via a 100 or 1000mbps switch both NICs would compete for the 100 or 1000mbps bandwidth and so there is no gain unless you have 2 isolated networks with cross over cables between them.

Google search found nothing, so I figured I'd mention this here. I was also thinking that there would have to be some SORT of manager to split the packet load between the NICs and a manager at the other end to assemble them from 2 sources, while the existing network is a single dedicated connection making disassembly and assembly BACK to files easier. ( Best analogy would be similar to how if a teleporter existed, moved a person from point A to B disassembling the body and reconstructing it at the other end "hopefully perfectly" when using two pipes to pass information vs 1 dedicated pipe.) Not sure if the manager would flip/flop to alternate packet transfer between the NICs to 'almost' double the bandwidth. * I would think that it would not be exactly double as for additional packets may be needed to maintain sync with the managers for the reconstruction process to happen perfectly like a feedback loop, so that if a packet was lost it would be resent etc. Packet loss should be very minimal on a short cross over cable between 2 systems, but hypothetically speaking I would assume you would need a feedback loop between the managers at each system to make this work.

I've got a feeling that certain higher-end NICs and managed switches can do this in firmware? Usually however, you'll need driver support and also you'll need to make a decision on how the teaming will work (round robin, load balancing, etc.)

With open source GNU/Linux, I think you might just be stuck with round robin bonding and you'd be looking to proceed along the following lines: http://www.howtoforge.com/nic_bonding Possibly some NIC vendors have proprietary solutions that could offer various load balanced options. YMMV.

Never tried this personally, because I've generally used gigabit cards for high-bandwidth applications and they've been sufficient.

Many switches (e.g. HP ProCurve) can handle this kind of load. The bandwidth per port is not the issue - the max bandwidth on the switch's backplane is the issue. Thanks Rob for that link. That sure looks like it... "NIC Bonding" I guess that is why I didnt find it in google hunt, didnt know it was bonding of NICs to act as 1 node. The link you posted goes into great detail on the config which is neat. When i am more awake I will read more into this tomorrow. As for now its 1:30am EST and time to crash.

I bet this is what he did since it looks to be exact and based on Linux OS.

Cool.

Solve : Using different computers on wired modem requires modem restart, why??

Answer»

Hi everyone, here's the situation. I visited my mother Friday evening. Mom has a desktop PC and connects to the Internet via Ethernet cable running from modem to PC; her current ISP is Time Warner Cable. My sister-in-law left her Toshiba laptop at my mother's house and wanted me to install antivirus software on it. To connect to the Internet with her laptop to download antivirus software, I disconnected the Ethernet cable from mom's PC and connected it to the laptop. This did not work; the laptop would not connect to the Internet. I TURNED off the modem and restarted it with it connected to the laptop. This established an Internet connection for the laptop and I was able to download the software.

Now, when I disconnected the Ethernet cable from the laptop and connected it to the PC, the PC would not connect to the Internet. I turned off the modem and restarted it. Again, the Internet connection was restored, this time for the PC.

I'm wondering why I needed to do the restarts of the modem. I have taken my Compaq laptop to my mother's house and connected via the Ethernet cable; this was with an older modem and a previous ISP and I did not have to restart the modem. And, my son visited me about 2 weeks ago and brought his MacBook computer and I simply connected an Ethernet cable to it so that he could connect to the Internet; no restart of the modem was required. Cable modems have no routing capability, so everything you describe is normal. The first device connected to the modem gets a public IP, different device...different public IP. If the older modem didn't do it, it was probably due to different CMTS (head-end) hardware, on the ISP's side. ROUTERS give additional security because of Network Address Translation (NAT). Most LAN's USE the same addresses, i.e. 192.168.x.y
BTW, DSL modems almost always have a built-in router. Thanks, CC, that all makes sense. The previous modem I mentioned was the one she had with her previous ISP, which was a DSL provider. So, it must have had a built-in router. Some cable providers give you a combined modem/router, mine is a rebadged Netgear. If you see more than one Ethernet socket it's probably a router.Just to make it more complicated:
Some cable modems have an integrated cable modem telephone for VoIP, aka E-MTA (EMBEDDED multimedia terminal adapter).Quote from: Salmon Trout on September 16, 2012, 03:50:32 PM

If you see more than one Ethernet socket it's probably a router.
It only has one Ethernet socket.Quote from: soybean on September 16, 2012, 04:09:33 PM
It only has one Ethernet socket.
That makes it a cable modem. BTW, MANY ISP's allow you to provide your own cable modem instead of leasing their's, payback period is usually 12 months.

Solve : addtron adh-1016 problems:?

Answer»

Ok, so i have one of these addtron adh-1016 16 port HUBS. I connected it through some CAT5 to the router of the home, then out to the computers, plugged it in, and nothing. It is my understanding through experience and through reading that network hubs, switches and whatnot do not need to be installed with a CD or other type of media.

Question is, why is this not working.

I have several computers hooked into an 8 port switch right now, and i am looking to expand, and they all work with the 8 port with all the same cords and everything. My main question is why would the new (well, old, but new to the network) not decide to work.

I can not, for the life of me, find a manual anywhere on the net for one of these.

I might as well TRADE it in for a rack mount switch if i cant get this solved.

thanks everyone. Welcome to CH

I have several computers hooked into an 8 port switch
Please explain. More than 8 PCs?I am currently using a 8 port switch, and am simply in need of more ports for some servers, and even if i do eventually downgrade, i would like to use this switch anyway, as it provides a faster speed for internal network communications (when it is working, anyway). OK.
But I don't understand. If you are an IT professional, and you don't want to waste lour time, why even brother with something you can not get to work. Especially something so fundamental as a switch or hub.
What speed do you need?
Do all computers need to be in the same group?

The above is sold on Amazon for under $60. What is you time worth?
Netgear FS116 ProSafe 16-Port Fast Ethernet Desktop Switch at Amazom

I am looking to fix what i have, firstly, to keep from spending money on things i already have, but just need to be fixed up.
I will most likely upgrade in the future as i am in more of a need for faster networking, but for now, i just have what i got.

I can not, for the life of me, find a manual online for this thing. at all. So i am asking here.

Sorry if this is an unanswerable question that i have asked, Please notify me if it is. Hello again zeroburn

I have looked high and low for the manual with no luck.

When you say when you set everything up you got nothing are you talking about no "powerlights, linklights" etc or do you mean no connection / internet?

I am pretty sure you know this but the network should be (if you are still going to use the 8 port switch)

Cable modem> router> switch> hub> PC's or
Cable modem> router with hub and switch plugged into router> PC's
If you are not going to use the switch
Cable Modem> router> hub> PC's

There is not a lot of info on that model hub from what spec's I can find this is a UN-manged hub (no gui / web portal) if that unit is just a plain hub there should not be set-up / software all the ports on that switch are auto-negotiating so it will not matter what ports the PC's are connected to and the same will hold true for the cat cable that goes up to the switch.

If you are getting power to the switch try running a cat cable from #1 port to the switch then skip a port and the #3 port on to the PC's

Plus just in case try to use straight thru cat cables and not cross over cables.

Plus if for some strange reason this hub is a "managed hub" disconnect all cables to the hub and just plug in 1 cat cable into the #1 port on the hub and plug the other end into your pc and see if you can get a IP thru ipconfig chances being if you dont get an ip than it is just a plain hub.

Hopefully this helps you, Please let us know how you make out. Mike I do get the power light on, and also link lights after plugging in the device to the power adapter. However, none of the computers within the network can "see" eachother, nor am i able to make a connection to the outside world, or anywhere outside of the network.

well, i tested the plugging of the hub to the network by plugging it into the switch, and then plugging the rest of the computers, and this is seeming to work, well, for the client computer, anyway.

I tried to transfer my webserver over to the hub, but when trying to access the website from another computer connected to the router through wireless, it was unable to connect, but when i have the webserver plugged into the 8 port switch, it works fine.

I am not completely sure, but i think i would not have to re-configure static IP settings for changing hubs/switches.

EDIT: it works after a few re-boots. Thanks guys for helping me make this work. However, i would like to know why skipping port 2 HELPED, if someone would like to share the why, thanks

EDIT: sorry, but plugging in the rest of the devices have proven that this is still very fidgety to get to work. Plugging in the actual servers results in the server being offline.

EDIT, AGAIN: Ok, so, i HOPE you can all laugh at my stupidity, but the reason it did not work was confusion in my patch cables between switches and hubs. so, yeah. Good evening zeroburn

That is great news to hear I am happy for you.

I had a feeling it was something like that that is why I told you about the cables.

The skipping of the port should not have to be done with all ports being auto sensing but I have run into that with Hub's, Switches and routers. That is why I put that in there for you to save you a headache.

Some manufactures will TELL you on some switches / routers if Port #1 is to be used as the uplink then the next port can not be used so the next available port is #3. But like I told you that hub is UN-managed so you should be OK but I have run into that issue with many Hub's, switches and routers.

But in the end I am happy for you. I did also put some stuff up for you on the DD-wrt router issue. Mike

Solve : Creating Subnet, Some Questions.?

Answer»

Hello to all. I am running my network and am wanting to create a subnet, if thats what i am actually looking for.

I would like to have my server rack to have a firewall and seen by the rest of the network as one ip, i guess is my goal.

I want to do this so that my EXPERIMENTATION and projects would not disrupt the rest of the network, and so i can set up DHCP, a firewall, ext inside the network.

If anyone knows how to do this, let me know. Thanks. You could use a NATing firewall/router, or you could configure one of your SERVERS as a router - ideally it would need at least two network cards for that. Then use separate physical network switches for each network, or use the VLAN capabilities of a managed switch.I have some Entresys Matrix E7 chassis with managed switches, but i am in need of reading the manual through first (over 1000 pages). On the servers using the new sub-network, what configurations would need to be changed? (Ubuntu Server 12.04)

Thanks for helping out. I agree with Robs suggestion to have 2 NICs and physically isolate the networks as the best and easiest method.

I have never run 2 DHCP's on the same network, but I suppose one way to have 2 DHCP networks running on the same network and not compete would be to assign reservations for devices by MAC ADDRESS to designate which DHCP's would handle each NIC. Lots of work, and if you have DHCP (A) and DHCP (B) and a reservation for 01:55:EF:04:77:3A on DHCP (B), I would think that you would have to black list it from DHCP (A) so that DHCP (A) does not give it a dynamic IP from its subnet. This is hypothetically speaking since I have never attempted to run 2 DHCP's on the same LAN. There is the chance that both DHCPs would battle it out competing to be heard. As well as what happens when you introduce a new Networked device to the network that has no reservation on either, would both DHCP servers try to give it an IP or would it be the DHCP server with the fastest response to the request for the stack. And the worst scenario a network storm crippling the network! Quote from: zeroburn on September 11, 2012, 03:48:41 PM

what configurations would need to be changed? (Ubuntu Server 12.04)

Gateway? Network? Subnet mask? Routing tables? Hard to say without a bit more flesh on the bones.Quote from: DaveLembke on September 12, 2012, 11:17:04 AM
I have never run 2 DHCP's on the same network

Don't do it. Physically or logically isolate (separate switches/VLANs). Managing two DHCP servers on the same LAN would be a full time JOB.

I did 3 clean installs of windows today.

Does my isp TRACK my browsing then tell google and everyone?

what all can i do?

What else do i need to do?

Does my ISP track my history? will a modem reset fix clean it?also i have started using secure search engine.Have you thought about SEEING a doctor?
If he is really paranoid, Here are six things he can do:
0. Take Prozac daily
1. Legally change his name.
2. Move to another city.
3. Buy a new PC and cell phone.
4. Ignore all his friends.
5. With no friends, no need for e-mail.

Hey what is the most private email?
Found hushmail, but the fact they try to prove themselves with testimonials makes me think its a trap

Don't trust google so either hotmail or yahooQuote

Hey what is the most private email?
For a price, maybe 25$ per year, you can rent a virtual host and manage your own email servers. Many people do it.
A paid account from https://www.fastmail.fm/mail/personal.html might be a good choice.First of all, to those being so, stop being rude and childish. There's no need for it. If you don't have something useful to contribute, then don't contribute.

Now, back to your question STC:
If you're using any browser that has a syncing feature (ex. Firefox, Chrome, Opera, etc.) and the feature is enabled, it could be syncing things from that. It's the only thing I can think of that would still KEEP track of websites you've visited/bookmarked/filled in stuff/etc. and carry over through a format because of it. If you're using a syncing feature, try disabling it. If you're logged into Google when searching, log out as well. Google does save your search history. Also note that Google offers automatic suggestions as you type in the search box. This are based on your past searches as well as other people's searches that appear similar in wording to what you're searching for.

Your ISP would not have an effect the links you see in your browser already appearing as visited. Resetting your modem will not do anything.

But just some advice, and I mean this in the nicest way:
The internet is not a private or secure place. Most things you do online are documented somehow by someone/something, whether it's the logging of your IP address by a website you visited/posted on or your search history or the Youtube videos you've viewed or a profile on a social website you think you "deleted". Even if you're not logged in to a website, your IP address has likely been saved.

It's like digging in the trash and trying to keep yourself germ-free. It just doesn't happen.

The best advice I can give you is to learn to live with that or to stay off the internet altogether. While wanting to remain completely private is understandable, it's just not possible in an online world. Somehow, somewhere, there will be a record of your visit, your IP, something.

Relax, breathe a bit, and don't worry so much.Download a software available in market now in which, The Browser History tab reports all the historical browsing data recorded by your browsers. In this tab you will be able to choose whether you want to select specific urls to delete, specific urls to replace with another, fictitious address, or simply delete them all. it will be very help full for you. Good morning Fizzaali and welcome

If you are talking about 3rd party cookies they can be rejected from your browser.
There are programs that can do full history delete
Yes WEB sites like google / your ISP / Cell phone company etc do track you.

Solve : Printer on wireless LAN?

Answer»

OK.

I have a machine running on windows xp x86, and a laptop running on windows 7 x64. I have an HP laserjet 1009 printer attached to the xp machine, with sharing turned on. Until yesterday, the printer SET up that I had was fine - the windows 7 laptop was recognising the printer and would send documents to it to print. Last night, this stopped working for no apparent reason. The only thing I have done is to replace the adapter on the xp machine, because it was broken I discovered, but I have set up the share again since INSTALLING it and now the windows 7 machine wont find either the xp machine or the printer on the network.

Any ADVICE regarding how I could solve this problem would be appreciated.

Cheers, guys. :-)

feenixWhen discovering wifi devices does the xp system with the new wifi nic not show? Did you install the driver in the correct order, where most have you install the driver CD first before the adapter is installed so that the adapter is associated with the MFR drivers and not MS default? Most adapters like this have a label on the device or CD warning that order of INSTALLATION is critical.

Solve : Malwarebytes blocks my stie.?

Answer»

My web site, www.geekk9pm.com, is bering blocked my Malwarebyrtes AV SOFTWARE. I bought the software just a few days AGO. It seems the host company I USE sends out something to the computer that is flagged as dangerous.

Anybody else every had this sort of thing?
Never been blacklisted like that. Does your site have any routines / scripts in it that are showing as a false positive to potentially dangerous sites? The MailTo: Form Data routine use to nab me with Norton Internet Security a long time ago until I did away with that.

I cant go there from work computer to take a peek, but is this a free web host that has redirection advertising which could be black flagged? My web site has been on four different servers. Most of the content is a WORDPRESS blog. I start up the site with a blank WordPress blog. It is the only script I use.
It seems there is no way of knowing if content is being the TRIGGER. At least on on-line scanner gave the site a clean green ratting.
I don't have the tools to tell me why the site is being blocked. Some research only implicates the IP address, and from a time prior to my first use of that IP.
Maybe the only solution is to get another server. Again.

Solve : 2 PC's with USB cable ..How??

Answer»

Hi all people .

I have been trying for a while but cannot join 2 Pc's together and although many sites online say I can do this easy ..I cannot ,,,,maybe its just me ,......

what I have is ......

Computer A , a Dell running Win XP this is the main ONE and connect through an ethernet cable to a small D-link box to broadband ....USB 2.0

Computer B .....A Compaq ...also running win XP ,..not connected to anything , but would run onlie OK if i transferd the connection over ., USB 1

I also have a USB netwoking cable from BELKIN , i belive , wich is USB to USB 2.0

It would be best if I could actually share the internet connection between them but failing that the at least send files between one to the other .....

The idea is that to stop the kids bugging me they can use the other computer (compaq) so I came up with the brilliant idea of joining them together so i dont have to upload games save them on a Memory stick then manually put them into the other one ......

ANyway no matter what I do I cannot make any computer see the other one ....i try it from both ends and have the same software on both computers ......

Question ,, what is the best way of doing this ?
Maybe its just a different approach ?

But thanks for trying in advance .....
You may have to reply USING small words for me ,,,..... You sure its USB to USB. Also is the driver installed? I think so ... but Im really not sure ,i will check and maybe just do a complete re-install to make sure..Now I have a better idea , some one point me in the direction of a cable and software that will do the job and i will have a look at that instead , it may be quicker and simpler for all ( me and you ) in the long run .....Deal?
What ISP modem and router model are currently being used? The WAN port is better and widely used nowadays.http://www.leeindy.com/connecting_two_computers_using_crossover_cables.shtml
truenorthTo add to the cross over cable you will have to setup the computer that is connected to the modem to internet to act as a gateway for the other computer that is connected via cross over cable. This is an unusual setup for DSL or Broadband but would work. I setup a setup like this for a dial-up user who had 2 windows xp computers that they wanted both to be online at same time competing for the 56k bandwidth vs just 1 system.

If you have DSL or Broadband, I would buy a router that has 4 or 5 network ports, and then connect Cat5 CABLES from both systems to the router. This will allow for the computers to operate online independently.

The problem with a cross over / ( internet sharing ) gateway setup is that the system that is acting as the gateway has to be running for the computer sharing internet thru it to operate online!

As far as PC to PC communications over USB, I have only seen USB used for TRANSFERRING files from PC to PC similar to the old LapLink setup.

Solve : Effective usage of internet bandwidth?

Answer»

Hi Everyone,

I NEED help on how to effectively utilize my internet bandwidth provided by my ISP. I am using a DIAL up type of network through a usb modem. The indicated connection speed is 7Mbps but during browsing i experience slow and choppy network. Download run at a speed of 12kbps.

I want help on how to effectively utilize about 1/3 of my bandwidth.

Thanks in advance.
~Akod7mbps leads me to believe you have DSL, But 12kbps sounds like Dial-up unless the sites your visiting to download have a slow backbone to the internet.

Please run www.speedtest.net
and reply back with upload and download speed.

What is the make/model of the modem and computer as well as OS of the computer?Quote

network through a usb modem
This could also be your problem. http://compnetworking.about.com/od/broadband/f/modeminterface.htmThanks to u guys for your response.

After running the speed test this was the results i got:

Speedtest Results:

Download speed Upload speed
0.12Mb/s 0.09Mb

Modem type: Huawei E173
My computer is Dell Latitude D410 and running Windows XP Professional SP3This modem is CELLULAR so a number of things can affect its speed. If the signal is weak it will sync up at a lower speed, also these tend to revert to a similar speed to dial-up when signals are weak. While if you have a strong signal it will connect at a faster speed thru a cellular broadband handshake.

Do you have a cell phone that shows signal strength where this cellular modem is located such as 1 bar out of 5 etc? I am curious as to if this modem is located in a location where it has a good signal. Such as have you tried this outside your home to see if it connects faster with a STRONGER signal? The correction to this may be to just RELOCATE your modem to a different location in your home such as by a window.

Solve : Win 7 Network?

this is the error that appears http://attachments.techguy.org/attachments/177591d1282515017/techsupportguy.png

this is all worked GROUPED too. Not sure if it's realities to this home group thing
Good MORNING Ryuk and welcome back to CH

Sorry but I am not trying to be a wise guy

The attachment you gave us it looks like the PC is trying to connect to "Server" is this sever in a domain? or are these PC in a home network?

If this PC is trying to log into the domain make sure the user name and password are correct. If this is being done in a Domain click on "use another account" and just put in Laurel with the password.

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike

You are responding to someone who has been banned from the forum multiple times for spinning everyone's wheels. If you choose to continue to reply to his posts, be PREPARED to waste your time. Your choice.Apparently there are some creditals that can be set under the network settings. Not sure if this is CONNECTED to the home group or not. Can now access the machine through the network

Solve : Portforwarding?

Answer»

I'm trying to set up a music-streaming program called Icecast and I'm running into trouble portforwarding. I followed all the steps from Portforwarding.com's tutorial but I still can't connect to my own computer through my external IP. Firefox just says the server "is taking too long to RESPOND", but it should work. I managed to connect successfully to http://localhost:8000/stream , but when I change that to my external IP (and change it in my config file) I can't connect to it through the remote IP (and obviously not localhost either).Port Forwarding is different for every router, so I don't know if I could solve the PROBLEM router-wise.
However, I had the same problem once, and I solved it by ALLOWING connections through the Windows Firewall.I checked Windows Firewall and I set rules for both TCP and UDP for incoming, and for ANY connection on outgoing, yet it still fails. Comodo Firewall is set to allow all requests inbound and outbound for the program as well...

I don't know what I could have messed up on portforwarding-wise. It's a fairly straightforward procedure for my router. The only part I actually needed to look up was how to set a static IP on Windows 7.Oh well, I just decided to RUN Icecast through my server and USE *censored* on my computer to send the music directly.have you tried lowering your routers firewall? If you're trying to connect to your own external IP address from within your LAN, you may encounter a problem called "hairpin NAT". Very few consumer routers are good at handling "out and back in again" connections. Most DrayTek or Cisco routers can handle this, but cheaper kit is often going to struggle.
