Solve : Check if a PC is active on the network?

Answer»

I need to check if a pc on another floor is connected to the network because it needs to be patched.

I don't think ping is the BEST way to check because that uses a different port. I was told even if a PC is pingable, it doesn't MEAN the PC can be patched.

Is there a better way to validate if a PC is active and can be patched?
If I write a dos script to check the PC, how do I validate the status?

Thanks.I forgot to mention the PCs to be validated are Windows XP SP2.Quote from: april on January 20, 2009, 10:30:44 AM

open windows explorer, open networks...is the machine present??? If so and you have acces it is accessable to you...if NOT then it isn't...this finds if it's active on your network...now as for patching it I think you may need to use some other TOOLS...remote desktop maybe??

Solve : stronger network adapter needed?

Answer»

Okay, so for a long time I have used this network adapter:

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=179211

However, now Verizon has forced us to change our router so that it is compatible with their TV service (which we just bought into). Unfortunately this router is not as STRONG as the previous router and i cannot achieve a lasting connection to it from my computer. However, I know that the router must work decently since other people in the house can connect to it from further locations.

I know that this was a cheaper adapter so there must be a better option available, can anyone recommend an adapter that would work, or how I could tell if an adapter would be strong enough, short of buying it and seeing? If you still have the other router, you can still use it. Just run Cat5 from verizon's router to one of the main ports on the old router and it should still work as a wireless router for you.

You might need to SET that router's IP address to something compatible with the verizon router. If that's the case I can help WALK you through that.

Do not connect the new modem/router to the Internet port of the old router. If the old wireless device was an integrated modem / router, you (probably) won't be able to use it.

My Mom just upgraded to FIOS (Is that how you spell that?) and he new router is 54g. The router I set her up with was 108g. And the router itself isn't very configurable. It doesn't even have WPA. WEP is not secure and you shouldn't use it. PERIOD. My advice is buy a new wireless hub or router and forget Verizon's if the old one won't work.

WEP is not secure and you shouldn't use it. Period.
If the choices are: a) WEP or b) no protection, use WEP. WEP will keep 100% of 'casual' signal stealers off your connection.

If WPA is an option, of course, use it.Quote from: drmsucks on August 28, 2008, 10:59:00 AM

That's true and if the router can block all but known MAC addresses that will help as well.

Solve : IP Addresses?

Answer»

127.126.125.124 – Class A, Loopback
0.0.0.0 – Class A, This computer
172.17.168.127 – Class B, non-routable
192.168.1.48 – Class C, non-routable
12.13.14.15 – Class A, Directed broadcast
180.170.160.0 – Class B, Network
220.221.222.223 – Class C

Above I listed some IP addresses and have determined their class and what type of designated address they are. I understand that some of them may have another special FEATURE that I did not LIST...can anybody help me point them out? Thank you. Is this homework?
This a a general explanation of the IP address.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_address
It is customary to divide the address into four parts.. These are decimal numbers representing octal values. They are called octets. The IDEA is to make it easy for us mortals to visualize the address.
For IP6 it is popular t to USE hexadecimal notation with some special SHORT hand notations. In any case, most of use never need to worry about it.

Solve : Connection goes out a couple times a day for no apparent reason.?

Answer»

But it's a little more complicated than that.

I don't think the actual internet is going out, it's probably something to do with my PC. Another PC in the house isn't effected by this.

For some reason, usually a few random times a day, I'll lose my connection. When it goes out, all I have to do to fix it is go into Network and Sharing Center, click MANAGE Network Connections, disable the connection, then re-enable it. Then it's all back to normal. It doesn't sound like much but it gets really annoying, REALLY fast. Especially when it goes out in the middle of games or when I'm doing something important (of course it seems to know when I'm doing something important and goes out right then, just to taunt me.)

There's got to be something I can do about this.

Chipset :nVidia nForce 590 SLI

My modem is a Netgear CG814GCMR PROVIDED by the cable company, my ISP is Charter Communications, and I have a 5 MBPs connection. The problematic computer is set up as a static IP, the other computer isn't. But as far as I can remember, my PC was effected by this problem before it was set up as a static IP.Click the start menu and then click run type cmd into the box and press enter.
here type ipconfig /all and hit enter. copy the results and post them here.

You may need to highlight all the text with click and drag to create a box around the text then hit the enter key to copy the text.

While your waiting for a reply you could see if any of this has an effect:

In command prompt (start menu>run>cmd) type and hit enter after each LINE:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

If that doesn't work...

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log press enter

then

netsh winsock reset catalog press enter

Then restart your PC.

If this doesn't help run WinSockFix. (Download from http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml)
Then restart your PC.

Solve : wireless connection is excellent but the browser page opens w/ server not found?

Answer»

Okay, so my laptop was using a USB connecter, but it broke.
I didn't think that my laptop had a wireless CARD, but turns out it does.
I enabled the card, and CONNECTED to my wireless internet.
The connection says excellent.
But when I open the internet any address i put in OPENS with "server not found" and says that the internet can not find WHATEVER website I typed in.
I have already "repaired" the wireless connection.
Also, I tried to restart/turn off my computer.
I also unplugged the router and then restarted my computer and then tried again.
Same thing.
Now if I take the cord from the router and plug it dirrectly into the back of my laptop, the internet works.
Also, I am currently on my room mates computer and her computer is currently connected to the internet w/ the same router that I use via her wireless card.
I really would love some help!! Quote

The connection says excellent.
We'll see...
Go Start>Run ("Start search" in VISTA).
Type in:
cmd
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

At Command Prompt, type in:
ping www.google.com > ping.txt
Hit Enter.

In Window Explorer navigate to:
C:\Documents and Settings\your_name (C:\Users\your_name in Vista)
Double click on ping.txt to open it in Notepad.
Copy all text, and post it in your next reply.

Solve : Internet is working, but software programs won't connect?

Answer»

Hi, I use Windows XP, and I recently tried to renew my McAfee Memebership. When I started the download manager, it said it was UNABLE to connect to the internet. I then tried some other programs, and they won't connect either, including Napster, Itunes, Internet Explorer, etc. The only thing that will connect to the internet is FIREFOX. I tried resetting my wireless network multiple times, I tried plugging my computer directly into the router, I tried taking down the firewall, I tried adding the programs to the firewall exceptions list, I tried lowering the security on my internet options menu, I just don't know where to go from here. I feel LIKE I've tried everything and nothing works. I even downloaded a new version of IE yesterday and that didn't work either. Any suggestions? What is your setup like? Are you using cable or dsl?

You can try to unplug the modem and your router and shut your computer off.

Wait about 1 or 2 mins than plug your modem back in and wait 1 or 2 mins. Than plug your router back in and wait about 2 mins than boot your computer and see if you can get on the web....

I'm using a cable modem. I've tried turning everything off and back on, it didn't work. Did you try to connect the computer straight to the modem, bypassing router?
Did you try Safe Mode with Networking?I resolved the problem by completely uninstalling and reinstalling internet explorer. Thank you all for your help.Good going...thanks for posting back

Solve : How do I make my netgear WGR614 v6 work with my verizon gateway router??

Answer»

Sorry for the length but I have been searching for answers for days PLEASE HELP!

My situation: My VERIZON Actiontec router is in the basement, I have horrible wireless signal in my room and in most of the house. I have a computer upstairs that is connected by ethernet to the router(runs through the walls). I want to use that ethernet COMING from the gateway router to put another wireless router online, a Netgear WGR614. When I use the netgear router's wizard it says if I want to this this with a gateway router I have to put it in bridge mode to make it work. How do I do this? The routers have the same Gateway IP address by the way.

So put simply, I want to put a router online with an ethernet cable connected to the main router, and computer. Also any other tips on doing this are appreciated.

I want to do this because I don't get good signal throughout my whole house so I want a second router to connect to. Also I play Unreal Tournament 2004, and a few months ago it ran perfect, then I quit, now I'm back and it lags horribly when I'm connected at my house. When I connect at my friends house it runs perfectly. The only difference is, at my house, the signal strength is good/very good, and at his house it's excellent. So I think that might be part of it. Also I looked up info about my router and some say it's not that good. People also say that instead of netgear I should connect linksys to fix this, my friends house has linksys. (because they are best) If you have another way to fix this it would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot,
David

There isn't anything wrong with netgear in general. I use one at home. (Actiontec is another story, but you're stuck with them, so let's move on...) The first thing you need to do is change the IP address on the netgear router, follow the manual. As for putting it in Bridge mode, that should also be in the manual. Haha. About the manual for netgear, I have no IDEA where that is. I might have one for actiontec though, does anyone know where to possibly find these online?link to manual page Nothing's WORKING I keep getting limited or no connectivity.

Solve : Problem with TCP IP protocol, error 720...etc?

Answer»

Hi.. Im having a problem with my internet connection, every time i try to connect i get error 720. The problem has nothing to do with my ISP or my modem, they both work in another computer.

I went to this article in Microsoft Support : http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B810979&x=14&y=14

But for some reason i cant uninstall the TCP IP protocol from step 1, the uninstall option looks washed out...
So i went to http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B299357&x=22&y=12
but theres no sense in resetting the TCP IP protocol if the steps from article 1 tell me to uninstall it, do some things and install it again...

Here are my specs:
Windows XP SP2
512 MB of Ram
The modem i use is a SONY Ericsson phone modem

Please help!!You say there is no sense in reseting the TCP IP protocoal if the other step tells you to uninstall but since you can't get it to uninstall then I would suggest TRYING the reset. All right, let me explain myself... in order to perform step 2 from the first link the tcp ip protocol must be uninstalled.. after i complete those steps i have to install it again.. so, resetting is not an option.. i need you to tell me how to uninstall the tcp ip protocol (the option looks washed out) or how to fix error 720 with other methods.. thank youWith Windows XP, you cannot re-install TCP/IP, but you can reset it with the following DOS command:

Click Start, then Run..., and put the following in the Open TEXT box (or enter the following from a DOS command prompt which you can get by Start->Run-> cmd)
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

http://www.modemsite.com/56k/duns720.aspHmmmm.. i wonder, if tcp ip protocol cant be uninstalled why is microsoft asking me to do it in the first link i provided (microsoft support for internet connection error 720)? weared...
Anyways, like i said already, according to that SOLUTION resseting is not an option because in order to perform step 2 the protocol needs to be uninstalled, in step 6 or something, it can be installed again. I repeat, resetting is not an option. So, can someone provide me with another solution to connection error 720? tnxs
P.S: just to make sure i reset the protocol and that didnt fix a thing..So sorry, seems like instead of replying i made a new topic...can someone embed this in my post called tcp ip protocol and error 720, tnxs and sorry..Im sorry, it seems like instead of replying to my topic, i posted a new one.. oops! can someone embed this in my post called tcp ip protocol and error 720? tnxs and sorryI was refering to the doing what was advised in the second link you had in your original post. Since you can't find out how to uninstall it why are you insisting that reseting is not an option? Wait, what's happening here? Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on August 29, 2008, 03:34:01 AM

Wait, what's happening here?

He meant to reply to his original topic but accidentally started a new one instead. I have merged the two topics as requested.Yeap.. i just posted that second link to let you KNOW i had already tried that... So what should i do now to fix the error

Solve : Strange connection problem?

Answer»

I have a toshiba qosmio g35 laptop. i recently moved back into my dorm and have been having conection problems. I'm the only person in my apt with this problem. It seems that it will work randomly for 2 or 3 MINUTES when connecteed by an ethernet cable, I can't currently connect to a wireless network where i am located. However, when I get to the student CENTER I am able to use the wireless internet. I was wondering if anyone can help me with this problem. is there a possible internet setting CHANGE? is this a sign of a broken ethernet port?First, I would try plugging the cable into another port on the Router, maybe change the cable while you're at it.Not sure if this will help but it TAKES two seconds and is worth a try

That is a similar problem to mine. My WIRED internet often cuts out, but my mom's laptop with a wireless connection to the same router has smooth internet(as long as we are on at different times).

It's not a HUGE deal, but I think it's just because I have a crappy router. It may be because your adapter is using old DNS settings from you old router. Go into the Start menu and click Control Panel (switch to classic view if it isn't already) then click Network Connections then right click on the wireless network that says Connected and click Properties under the list; "This connection uses the following" left click to highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then click the Properties button.
Click to enable Obtain IP address automatically.
Click to enable Obtain DNS server address automatically.

If these settings were already enabled go into Start menu click Run type in cmd and press Enter.
From this screen type ipconfig /all and hit Enter.
Copy and paste the results here.
It may also be useful if you can do ipconfig /all from one of your house mates machines that can access the internet and post the results here also. For Helpmeh, It may be a crappy Ethernet cable. Try using a different one if you have a spare or try using a plug and play wireless adapter.Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6001]

I think Im pretty much having the same problem. I followed these steps except I don't know what to put in for own IP address and DNS server..

before you change anything do an ipconfig /all as above post shows...then just use the IPV4 address [prefered](as long as it's in the 192 range) in that print out with the dns addresses I provided...re-boot and try again

Good Luck

Solve : frames?

Answer»

I am very new to networking. I am just beginning networking as a matter of fact. I have a question silly as it may sound but here goes. If you change the frame type that your NIC uses to transmit data from Ehternet to Token Ring, why would this prevent the workstation from connecting to the network? ThanksDo you have a Media Access Unit? (MAU)
If you do then know if any part of the network is down, it will all go down.
To be honest I don't think your network is set up for Token Ring. Is each machine on the network connected directly to the MAU?I'm not sure. The question is posed in my book. I work in a college computer lab. The computers run only the TCP/IP protocol on an Ethernet network, and all computers use 3Com NICs. One day a student begins tampering with his computer when he restarts the computer, it alerts him that it can't find the network. All connections are sound. You check the properties and find that he has changed the frame type that his NIC uses to transmit data from Ethernet to Token Ring. Why has this prevented theworkstation from connecting to the network? I read that typically you use one or the other, Ethernet or Token Ring, but it is possible to use both. I don't QUITE understand "frame types" yet I don't think. Thanks for your reply.A Token Ring network is one where only one machine on the network can send information at a time. The MAU will receive a request for the 'Token' (which is actually a string of data which is needed to permit broadcasting to other machines on the network) from a machine that wishes to send data over the network. If the Token is not being used and the machine has the right permissions to broadcast on the network then the machine will be leased the key to send its message.
This was much more popular method years AGO to prevent network crashes from machines trying to broadcast at the same time as others, old network cables couldn't handle this.
The reason he can't connect with Token Ring SETTINGS is because the network isn't a Token Ring setup.Thanks. I was reading about an adapter that you could hook up that allows you to use Ethernet and Token Ring. Is that accurate and what would be the advantages of having both? Basically (very basically ) Ethernet is like the language that is used over a network and Token Ring is just one method of communicating using this language.
Ethernet means that each machine will have a physical (MAC) address and will be assigned an IP address and so forth, it's like a hard set of rules, Token Ring is just a way of enabling and preventing all the machines of trying to talk at once.
So if you have a Token Ring network then it is still using Ethernet. The token in a token ring is actually being passed around the network all the time and only stops moving when a machine holds on to it to send a message. If you are training to be a network engineer you will probably never see this setup still installed any where.
This was only used when half-duplex cables were the norm, these were cables where information could be sent down a ethernet cable in either direction but only one way at a time so to avoid collisions the Token Ring setup was introduced so that only one machine could broadcast at a time. Cat 5 cable is Full-Duplex meaning that information can be sent both ways at once and also networks have Collision detection which basically monitors traffic and any data that doesn't reach it's destination is re-sent. The machine that sent the information will know if it reached where it was going or not because the machine that is supposed to receive the packet of data is required to send an acknowledgment to say it received the data.I hope this helps, I had trouble getting my head round this stuff when I was studying but it turns out it's all really quite simple once you've read up about it all, just don't try to over think things too much. The hardware side of networks is really quite simple. Thanks so much. That makes a little more sense to me. I have read and read and tryed looking up info on the internet. We have a new instructor this quarter and about all we do is listen to powerpoints every class and that just repeats what is in the book. I need it simplified a little more than that. He hasn't assigned any projects to us so I am trying to do the ones at the end of the chapter for my own benefit. Thanks again for your help. Maybe you should CONSIDER teaching a class if you don't already!!http://www.wikipedia.com has some good articles try searching for Ethernet or anything that's covered in the power point presentations It's useful, anything you don't understand in the article just search up again. Wikipedia articles are usually written in annoyingly PERFECT English which can make for hard reading lol, I usually read each paragraph 2-3 times until I understand it. Hehe.
Ask your tutor questions when he's not busy too, if he's serious about teaching then he will help you out and this will show him that your actually interested. It seems to me that your quite early on in your course so I wouldn't worry if things aren't making sense yet.

Solve : Connecting to new modem?

Answer»

Hey i jus got a new motorola modem and COX cable says they are seeing that there is a signal coming from the modem. However, when i try to connect to linksys it says local only. I have try reseting the modem but it didnt work. I have windows vista. I think theres something i need to do on my actual laptop in order to connect but im not sure what to do. Any suggestions?I take it that the modem is actually getting a connection to the internet. You may need to adjust the DNS settings on your laptop. I'm not sure how to do this on Vista, try this: Right click the tray icon for your wireless connection and click open NETWORK connections if its there.
Then right click the wireless connection (the one that says Connected) and click properties.
Then scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), left click it then click the properties button.
Then set all these settings to automatic, including automatic private IP address if you have this option, in XP it's under the alternate configuration tab.
If this fails to help you out or these settings are already set then go into your command prompt and type: ipconfig /all
copy and paste the results in this post and someone should get back to you.To get to command prompt in Vista click the Start Menu. click Search. type cmd. hold Ctrl+Shift and press Enter.Wired, or wireless connection? ROUTER involved? Its wireless and there is a linksys router. and there werent any of those things under properties for vistais this what u need?

Genuine Intel (R) CPU

980 MHz, 0.99GB of RAM

I'm currently having problems with connecting to the internet via IE on a PC I just formatted with a MS Windows XP Home Edition SERVICE Pack 2, it connected fine before I formatted when I plugged a ethernet cable (i think) from the router/modem (not sure which one) to the back of the PC tower and it worked fine, the port in which it connected to was flashing CONFIRMING it's a sucessful connection. The router/modem is a Orange Livebox.

In Network Connections on the PC it doesn't pick up any internet gateaways only 'Dial-up Connection' & 'Incoming Connections'. When I have formatted my PC at my Mum's house I've never had to do anything else in TERMS of installing any ISP software from the disc which I originally recieved when I signed up. The modem in Device Manage is enabled so that's not a problem and it does pick it up in Device Manager.

Right now I can't think of anything else which can be the problem, any help much appreciated, thanks in advanced folks.

Joshare you connecting to this device via usb. ?

and were you using an ethernet cable last time..?I think you may just need to set up the connection once more. Before you formatted you had details of your preferred network connection and what settings to use, now all these have been wiped.
However, do not fear, it's rather easy to setup a new connection.
First of all, Are you going to be using a wireless adapter or direct ethernet cable?
Here's what you need to do in each scenario;
Click the Start Menu > Control Panel.
(Put into Classic View if it isn't already) Click Network Connections.

If your connecting via a wireless adapter:
Under 'Network Tasks' towards the left of the window click "Create a new connection."
Click where it SAYS "To connect to a wireless network, view wireless networks in range"
Then click on your router and press connect.

Your Orange LiveBox supports wireless networking and is the easiest way to connect, I would advise connecting to your router using a wireless adapter.

If, however, you're connecting via an ethernet cable:
Under 'Network Tasks' click "Set up a home or small office network" and follow the steps... I'm not going to bother to guide you through the steps because their are quite few and they're pretty straight forward, just remember to select connect through a RESIDENTIAL gateway when prompted.

Solve : Connected to LAN, but no internet?

Answer»

We have a home wireless network, with several laptops and one desktop. It worked fine for well over a year, but as of Monday, the desktop can no longer access the internet. It says it is CONNECTED to the network. I tried both IE and Firefox - nothing. I've tried a number of things, including, among other things, 1)unplugging the modem and router, then powering up again, 2)turning off the desktop and then powering up again, 3)connecting the desktop directly to the modem with an ethernet CABLE, all to no avail. Wirelessly, it says it's connected at 54 mbps and connection is excellent. Hardwired, it says it's connected at 100 mbps. I use antivirus (Norton), spyware prevention (Spyware Doctor, Spybot Search and Destroy, AdAware) and a firewall (FORMERLY the free ZoneAlarm, which I uninstalled in the last few days and now use the Windows firewall). I suspect (but I'm just guessing) that the problem may be related to an automatic update of SP3 that was downloading/installing on Sunday, when the internet last worked. When I WENT to go on Monday, it didn't work. Any suggestions? Thank you.Exactly what is wrong?

Also, if you look in Device Manager, are there any yellow exclamation marks or question marks?

What OS is this?Thank you for your response. I'm embarassed to say that the problem and solution were somewhat obvious. Despite the fact that, under System PROPERTIES, it indicated that I was running Service Pack 2, enough of Service Pack 3 had been downloaded/installed to mess things up. I checked under Add or Remove Programs, and SP3 was there. I removed SP3 and was able to access the internet. I then installed SP3 without any problems. So problem solved by uninstalling SP3?

Solve : 2 DDWRT routers and 2 networks to relieve heavy home network congestion?

Answer»

Hello,

Here is my opportunity:
I have 8 multi megapixel IP cameras using A LOT of network resources on my home network (Each are pulling around 1100mbs at times and EAT up about 70% of my gigabit connection on average on my network dvr video server.)

-I also have 3 laptops and about 10 home components connected to my network along with a sling box from dish, a desktop, a media sever and a few tablets.

-The bandwidth hog(s) are my IP Cameras from my home security system that are connected to a dedicated DVR/Server computer on the same network running Blue Iris software. The cameras connect through two Zyxel POE fast switches and those are plugged into a Lan port on the router.

What I was thinking is since I have TWO DD-WRT routers (A netgear R6300 and a Netgear WNDR3500)I could use both routers to isolate the cameras and improve the network performance.

-Since I connect to the Blue Iris/Dedicated DVR computer via windows remote desktop connection and use several devices across the same network that share resources I thought having one network would be a good choice. I connected one router to the other properly with different addresses and setup on for DHCP and disabled the other to be nothing more than a forwarder but now I think it would be better to Isolate the IP cameras from the rest of the home network by creating a different network BUT I STILL NEED Internet access on the server AND be able to remote login using windows remote login from a laptop that will now be on a different network.

In short, here is what I want to do:
1. Have home two home LANS, one would be 192.168.1.XXX. The other would be 192.168.2.XXX
2. The first LAN would be for home internet/wifi, laptop, computer, tablet, home theater use. The second LAN be for a home security IP camera system and DVR server computer.
3. Both LAN's must have internet access from a single ISP.
4. I must be able to remote login to the second LAN from the first LAN using windows remote login for system maintenance, viewing, etc.
5. Sharing files/resources across both networks would be an awesome plus but not totally necessary.

Could anyone point me in the right direction on how I could do this? Here is my available equipment:
-Home security server running windows 7 ultimate with an intel pro gigabit nic card and a built in gigabit nic on the motherboard.
-DD-WRT Router (wireless currently disabled) and used for the home security server and the Power over Ethernet switches and cameras
-DD-WRT Router with wireless AC/N for home equipment and computers for internet access.
-Several fast switches

Thank you in advance for your help!

Have you tried connecting one router to the other?

Yes & No: ORIGINALLY............
I had both routers connected that way but both on the same network with different IP addresses. I disabled the wan port on the second router (DDWRT makes it another lan port when you do that.) and setup the second router as a DHCP forwarder and changed it under advanced routing settings to operating mode=router, dynamic routing enabled. This works fine but it still did not decrease the load on the first router at all because the only active connections the second router receives is what ever the IP address is of the device I use to log into DDWRT on the second router.

To answer your question in regards to what I am asking to do....
No; I have not. I haven't for the following reasons:
1. I want to do my research first and not "guinea pig it" because all of my equipment is in a 41U rolling rack unit in a CLOSET. I can get to it all but want to do my research on the front end instead of the back end....ie, my back... My limited networking knowledge leads me to believe that what I am asking is not going to work just by simply connecting all the pieces TOGETHER without proper setting changes in the routers and server.
2. I have read/been generally told/warned, that having two different routers ISSUING DHCP at the same time is not good if not setup properly.

All that being said, is there reason for you to believe that just connecting them all together will work? Quote from: mahicks1976 on March 03, 2013, 04:37:20 PM
...All that being said, is there reason for you to believe that just connecting them all together will work?
I've done it at home with 2 different routers & it works just fine.
I didn't have the bandwidth loading you have.
If you put all the bandwidth hogs on one router, it will not affect the other router, but will still give them internet access when needed.
Port on 1st router must be connected to WAN port of 2nd router. Both your routers are gigabit on all ports.
The router I'm using now is flashed DD-WRT. I don't see either of your routers (netgear R6300 and a Netgear WNDR3500) in the support list. WNDR3500 is not a valid model number. WNR3500 is valid and is supported (Broadcom chip).

BTW, how many routers do you think are on the internet between you & this WEBSITE? You can do a tracert which will show how many "hops". 16 hops from me to CH, i.e. at least 16 routers.

Solve : Internet Bandwidth Monitoring?

Answer»

Hello,

Just leaving a quick message as I'm at COLLEGE at the moment, and have a 15GB limit of internet usage a MONTH. This is all fine, but I'm using a new samsung laptop and over the last few days there SEEMS to have been large leaps of around 300MB at a time on the traffic reports I've been looking at (taken by Net Meter), from SEEMINGLY nothing - I have not downloaded any of this myself. Therefore I assumed it could be some kind of windows updates being download, so I turned off the automatic downloading feature, yet the problem persists.

So therefore I was just wondering if there was a program which can actually tell you which programs are using the internet on your computer (Internet Explorer, iTunes etc.) seperately, and how much they are downloading (and perhaps even a log which states which time a program used the internet).

Thanks
Hmmm... I'm not sure about that but you could download Network spy http://www.sumitbirla.com/software/netspy.php and run it while this peak of traffic is occurring, this will tell you the addresses of all the current connections while it is running and how much data they are sending you or you are sending them. Then look to see which IP address is sending you all this data and make a note of it. Then block this IP from connecting to you.
Just noticed something strange... NetMeter said my daily usage was on 300MB when I put the laptop into standby a moment ago, and I turned it back on, almost straight after, it went up to 700MB, with me not doing anything.

Just tried it again, this time with the internet cable completely unplugged as I put it into standby... I turned it back on, and it was up to 1.01GB!! The internet wasn't even connected! What is going on?Try using a different monitoring program and see if the same occurs. Try BMExtreme http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/BMExtreme-Download-4372.htmlThanks, I'll give it a go. Although I've got a version of BitMeter running as well, and it's telling me the same thing...Okay, well BMExtreme also monitors the IP address that are connecting just click the drop down button and select "IP LIST".
TCPview can monitor all connections.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897437.aspx

quick question though- if your running off the College Internet connection, perhaps NetMeter is showing the entire college's bandwidth?

Obviously it isn't your laptop causing these leaps, since it jumped even when the internet was unplugged.

Solve : Slow wifi in apartment, but fine for other Access points.?

Answer»

Please bear with me...my knowledge of wifi networking is not very high.

Computer Specs:

  • New HP computer
  • Intel Quad-Core 2.83GHz
  • 4 GB Ram
  • Vista Home Premium SP 1 (64 bit)
  • Realtek High Definitin Audio...onboard, I think.
  • NVidia GeForce 9500 GS
  • NETGEAR RangeMax Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter WPN111 (updated Vista driver)

Problem:
My apartment has WEP protected wifi access (2 access points, both same problem) which I'm showing at 11Mbps (isn't this slow?). My roommate in another room has no issues connecting, but on my old computer and now this one (both in the same room) I have a very slow connection, about modem speed. Furthermore, sometimes it seems almost to hang on loading something such as a site or about 20 sec. into a Youtube video.
There are maybe 10 Accesspoints in my range, but all with a lower signal than my apartment access (AROUND 70%). When trying to connect to other wifi points I have no access problems and everything runs quickly.

What I have tried:
  • I have tried moving around my USB "card" within the 3 foot radius the cord allows without improvement.
  • I called my ISP and they pretty much said it wasn't their problem because they haven't had any other complaints.
  • I tried removing all other Access points from my automatic connect list. This did not HELP.
My thoughts:
It seems maybe I am getting a lot of packet loss....?
Could this be due to my physical location within the complex which would cause interference?
Would turning down my signal strength help?...I knew how to do it on XP, but don't know if Netgear still supports it in Vista.

By the way, my www.speedtest.net numbers are app. 700kbps down, 400kbps up on the apartment network.

I appreciate everyone's time they take to respond on here. I have used this site before and it has been very helpful. Thanks!

11Mbps (isn't this slow?)

Wireless-G(most common) is 54Mbps, Wireless-N is 300mbps, and both will reduce speed if the signal is too weak.

Do you know where the router is located? How much is between your network Adapters Antenna and the router? (remember it is a perfectly STRAIGHT LINE- so at 45 degrees a wall will be twice as thick)

it's better to be more perpedicular to the wall through to the router then closer and at an angle. Again... if you know where it is, try different positions. It May require moving the computer to different locations in the room.Try your computers in a different room, if you can, and tell us what happens.

After doing this you tried to access your router control panel at 192.168.2.1 but you can't?
If you've just bought the router from Belkin then there should be a technical support number to ring on the box, although I don't know if the support centre will be in your country or how much the call would cost...
Can you give more information about the problem please? Nope haven't been able to get on to the panel and to all the other questions yes. Called up belkin and they said it was a lan problem and there was nothing they COULD do So is your wireless adapter finding the network when you click search for wireless networks in range?
Are you sure you've followed the manual CORRECTLY?
You could try a full reset of your router, it should tell you how to do that in your manual.
It's probably something as simple as you missed something out while setting it up.
Belkin tech support should have at least walked you through the set up and yes, it is a problem with the LAN lol, the LAN their equipment, which you paid for, is supposed to provide.

Sorry, I just read you've tried re-installing and reseting the router. Am I right in thinking the modem works correctly when your not trying to connect to it, does the internet/broadband light up on the router?

Quote

and when it did when the usb adapter is plugged in , we entered the details and when we click ok to confirm, the router loses connection.
What details did you enter?
Are you using a program installed from a disc to manage your networks? It may be better to uninstall this and use windows to manage your networks.
Try removing the adapter, uninstalling the software, restart the PC and then plug the adapter back in, hopefully windows will say it's detected new hardware and then say the hardware is ready for use, once it's done this go into control panel and then network connections, under network task click setup a new connection and click the highlighted Search for wireless networks in range.
Select your router and click connect and enter the key if needed... Let me know if this works.

Solve : Can no longer connect to internet (not wireless)?

Answer» SONY VAIO VGN-CS115J
Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 @2.00GHz
Memory (RAM) 4.00 GB
64-bit Vista

I'm hoping someone can help me out here as this all just kind of happened out of the blue. 3 days ago I just moved into an apartment complex where the internet is included free in your rent, so you just plug your ethernet cable into the wall and you are good to go.

Everything was working fine until last night. I was surfing the net and all of a sudden, I just couldn't connect to any pages. When I look at the network icon, it says local only instead of local and internet. Now it is the next day and it still isn't working. I know the internet isn't down, because I piggybacked on someone's wireless so it is clearly working.

I then tried to diagnose the problem and it says "cannot communicate with DNS sever(192.168.0.1) Network diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not receive a response."

Then there is an option to Reset the network adapter "Local Area Connection" and I do that and it says "Windows tried a repair but a problem still exists."

The only thing I can think of is maybe it has something to do with my ps3. I am currently switching the ethernet cord back and forth between my laptop and ps3 because I don't have wireless set up yet. Did that somehow make my internet stop working?

Sorry for such a long post, but I have no clue what is going on and I have no idea how to fix up. I'm hoping maybe one of you guys might know what is going on. Thanks.Sorry, I read on here that you might need to see what it says after I do ipconfig/all in CMD, so I did that and here it is:

NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : DisabledI would change your network connection settings to obtain the DNS server address automatically and see if this helps... However I'm not sure how to get to this in Vista...
Right click the network connection tray icon and click open network connections if you can.
From here right click the network connection that says Connected and then click Properties. Where it says "This connection uses the following" or whatever, scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and left click once, then click the Properties button or however you will get into the properties of this in Vista.
Then from the settings here click Obtain IP address automatically and click Obtain DNS server address automatically.

I think this might fix your problem, let me know how it goes.I checked that and both of them are already set to obtain IP address automatically and to obtain DNS server address automatically. So I guess that isn't the problem. Are you sure you checked it for the right connection, I'm not sure which one of those from the ipconfig report is the one your trying to connect with.

Other than that I'm not really sure. Its having trouble connecting to the DNS server, this could be due to a firewall or someone may have changed the access point settings in regards to your machine. There is a chance it could be due to an infection that's messing around with your network settings... Have you tried connecting in 'safe mode with networking'?
You really need someone else's help with this, I'm no expert. You could try these steps, it seems to work for some people.

Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
Restart computer, and check again.

(Btw, These instructions are copied from one of Broni's posts, I'm not sure it will have any effect for you but it won't hurt). You could also run an ipconfig from one of your house mate's computers and look to see what their DNS server address is set to for the connection they are using and then apply that to your connection (instead of Obtain DNS server address automatically).

Solve : Wireless Security and Connection Problems?

Answer»

I was wondering if anyone could help. I have just purchased a Belkin Wireless Router tomake my laptop and computer both work wirelessly but I was worried about security so found an online help guide to encripting my wireless signal. I have done this and the computer is connected and working fine but I am having PROBLEMS with my laptop.

When it is wired it works fine but if I swap to wireless it says the settings saved on my computer do not match. I have tried changing the network security key but it does not seem to make any difference, is there any other settings I need to CHANGE? Sorry if this is unclear.

My laptop is running Windows Vista, and was using WPA encriptionWhat operating system for the host...and which is on the laptop?

Have you tried rebooting the laptop and searching for wireless signals?I'm using my laptop as the host, I'm in rented accomodation and I can't drill through the walls to connect the main computer as host. Have tried rebooting it, I can find the signal it just won't let me connect even when I put in the correct keyCould be that the laptop's firewall could be blocking the desktop computer from connecting to the wireless connection.

You still haven't told us what operating systems are on each machine.

Also need to know what firewall software you're using on each machine.Sorry the computer is fine and works ok, the laptop works if I use the CABLE but after I applied the security settings I can't get the laptops wireless to work, though worked when there was no security. Laptop is Windows Vista and computer is Windows XP. As far as I know the firewall will be Norton System works or whatever comes with this package on the laptop and I don't know whats on the other computer (not actually mine) sorry imnotbeing very HELPFUL!sorbetsurprise, specifically what type of WPA did you set up in your router and your laptop? A REFERENCE: WPA and WPA2

WPA/WPA2 AES with Pre-Shared Key PSK as this was what I was advised to do My D-Link DI-524 router is set at WPA-PSK. In my Notebook PC running Vista, I have my encyrption set at:

Security Type: WPA-Personal
Encryption Type: TKIP

Give that a try.
Thanks, I tried it and I'm still having the same problem. When try to connect wirelessly and enter the code there is already one there and it doesn't seem to let me change it. At the moment I am right clicking and selecting properties and changing it there on the connect to a network page. Is there somewhere else I can/need to change it?I'm still having problems, If I completely reboot the router with the manufacturer's settings,is there a guide you would recommend for setting up security?

Solve : Adding/Changing to a New Wireless Adapter?

Answer»

I currently have a NETGEAR MA401 wireless adapter installed on my WINDOWS XP Home Edition laptop. For several years I have been using it to link to a wireless transmitter on my desktop PC so that I could access the internet via the stationary machine and its USB one-port ADSL modem.

This week, I have received a D-Link DSL 2640-B Wireless G Modem ROUTER from my ISP and I would like to use it wirelessly with my laptop.

I have a new BT 1055 USB adapter that promises better compatability and security than the elderly Netgear card.

Will I NEED to uninstall the Netgear card before I add the BT hardware ?

Will I also need to erase information from the laptop about the former Ad-hoc network?

In the portable computer's "Network Connections" there is a section called "Network Bridge" which includes an icon for a "Network Bridge Enabled MAC Bridge Miniport".

I don't really know what this is, whether or not I should remove it and how I should go
about that deletion if it is a necessary action.

Any tips would be hugely helpful.....You should delete the ad-hoc network from control panel>network connections and any software/drivers from the netgear card, then install and set up the new hardware, but I think that it won't do any harm if you still have the old card installed when you set up the new one.Hi

Thanks for replying.

I am confused about what "Network Bridge" is.

When I go to my "Network Connections" via the Control Panel the *only* section I have is "Network Bridge".

It has four icons. The full details are as follows -->

Local Area Connection
Connected, Bridged, Firewalled
Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network

1394 Connection

Connected, Bridged, Firewalled
1394 Net Adapter

Network Bridge
Connected, Firewalled
MAC Bridge Miniport

Wireless Network Connection

Not Connected, Firewalled

I am currently connected to the internet with an ethernet cable running straight to my router from the jack on my laptop. I assume this relates to the "1394 Net Adapter".

I don't understand why the Adapter appears under a "Network Bridge" heading when I would expect it to be categorised as "LAN or High-Speed Internet".

Is the "bridge" likely to be a REMNANT from when I was using the Ad-Hoc connection that I no longer require ?

The 1394 connection is firewire, leave that alone. "Local area connection" should be the ethernet connection. I don't know why everything is under "network bridge". Did you set up the new card yet? If not, set it up and report back with what shows up under network connections.Hi

I moved my Network items away from the "Network Bridge" and they are now logically labelled by type.

I had been trying to get the old Netgear MA401 card to work with WPA by following some flashing instructions posted at wifi-forum.com.

Eventually, I gave up with that and installed the BT product.....without having to uninstall the (modified ?) Netgear. I just "disabled" it before running the drivers for its replacement.

That replacement is *absolutely brilliant*. I can get a strong signal from the bottom of the garden (YAY !!!!) and the freedom and efficiency I am now experiencing is amazing compared to the shabby system I had before when I was using a (very, VERY noisy) Desktop PC as an internet gateway with a USB-cable daisy-chaining a wireless transmitter so that it could send its 6 metre range signal and get me to the dining room table !
I really didn't know what I was missing.
The Router lets me swap quickly between wired and non-wired connections (whicj I had imagined would be a pain. It isn't and I no longer have to "Dial Up" to access my ADSL. Great stuff !

Nice

I have a dell inspiron 2500 system operating system is 2000 professional . I download the driver for the Linksys wireless -G notebook adapter wpc54g. After downloading I OPEN it up and under the ssid it shows searching and it does not go anywhere. There is a refesh bottom and nothing goes anyway or the connect button nothing. There also a manual setup goes nowhere. When I exit it goes into to a link information and says no association with access point. also says adapter is inactive . the lights come on on the adapter. I a newbie not SURE .under the device manage network adapters it show the wireless g notebook and says the device is WORKING properly. any idea's to get this to work. Thank youAre using Windows 2000?
Some wireless adapters do not work with Windows 2000.
Does the adapter work OK on your XP system?
it has windows 2000 professional also windows 95 . I am thinking of installing windows xp on this more friendly.Inspiron 2500 is Pentium III, circa 2003. Your Linksys WPC54G came in different hardware versions. Make sure you get the correct driver for the version you have. Win2k does not have WiFi capability built-in, it would need more than the Linksys Driver, it needs the Linksys software, too. WinXP has WiFi but installing the software will turn it off.
http://support.linksys.com/en-us/support/adapters/WPC54Gthank you . I will try that.downloaded the wireless adapter. I am having problem connecting to the internet. When I open the adapter program it shows signal strength but it says you are connected to a access point but internet cannot be found.I go to my internet connection and it shows connection and when I open the properties up it shows the connecting using this wireless adapter. In the componets check are used by this connection are
client service for netware
client for Microsoft networks
odyssey network services
file and printer sharing for Microsoft networks
netbeui protocol
network moinitor driver
realtek EAPP[kt protocol
aegis protocol (iee 802.1x]v2.4.5.0
nwlink NetBIOS
nwlink ipx/NetBIOS compatible transport protocol
internet protocol (tcp/ip)

under the authentication
enable network access control using IEEE 802.1x is checked
eap type smart card or other certificate under the properties there is nothing checked.

the authenticate as computer when computer information is available is checked other option not checked is authenticate as guest when user or computer information is available.

not sure where to go from here to be able to connect to the internet .

Solve : Slow net??

I did a Dell PC restore back to shop standard, started instlaling all PROGRAMMES I had on before (TVersity, BitTorrent, MSN Messenger etc) they all seemed to work fluently but when I started download again through BitTorrent, I have terribly slow CONNECTION when when downloading files from fileshare which are 100MB big and only a .rar file type and thats taking ages. Even before when my pc was full of junk, I had MUCH quicker net connection and download rate. Any advice on how to improve it? Thanks. What type of connection do you have?
What's your ISP advertised speed? What are the numbers from here: http://www.speedtest.net/I think where on TalkTalk broadband, as for advertised speed, I'm not sure, I could find out. This is the numbers I got from speedtest.net. Thanks

According to this: http://www.macbroadband.co.uk/apple-mac-adsl/talk-talk, your advertised speed is 8Mbps, so your test readings are ridiculous.
I'd call your ISP right away.is there a router in your setup?Good Morning,

Your speed test definity shows that you Internet connection is slow. Remember that just because your connectivity can handle 100mb does mean it will download at that speed. If the server is real busy your downloading performance will decrease.Quote

If the server is real busy your downloading performance will decrease.
Speedtest will never show such a ridiculous difference. We have wireless I think, normally the only things that are running constantly is my PC upstairs and a PC in the conservatory which is my parents business COMPUTER but nothing part from mine downloads, I occasionally use the net for xbox live or for a quick search on my Archos 5 PMP when I can't be booting PC up. We have ethernet adaptor plugged in from power socket to the most applications (2 PCs) the rest have wireless adaptors.

Could nayone shed anymore light on the situation? Quote

BITTORRENT ---

Always set the speed in the speed test menu to a speed below what your connection can source it seems to work better and piratesbay seems to have the best torrent speeds. also always click on seeds to sort and order torrent CHOOSE the torrent with the most seeds where possable. i have a 360KPS connection but only get as high as 160KPS usually only 100MPS. some internet provider recognise torrent and slow the line speed to them mine does. but if i SURF the internet a bit just reading stuff nothing data intensive the torrent rocket to full speed if i don't surf the speeds like 16KPS. but once it at top speed i just leave it and it never stops.

Solve : connected with limited access?

Answer»

Hi I have a wind 7 laptop that i am unable to connect to my Sky internet anymore. When i check the connection it says "connected with limited access". But of course my browser page is not loading up.

- Its not my internet provider or router itself at fault as my other desktop machine in the home is able to connect with no problems

- Ive heard it could be a SIMPLE ISSUE with the password NEEDING to be retyped, but ive tried re-typing it with no effect

- I have uptodate anti virus software running & defraged my hard drive also

What else can i do??
Once connected I'd perform an IPCONFIG/Release and IPCONFIG/Renew at the COMMAND prompt which you can get to from typing CMD at the start run.

If you still can not connect to the internet, please then perform an IPCONFIG/all and report back or copy paste the information back here with the IP information that is shown. You can right-click on the window frame of the dos shell and select select all, and then right-click again when its highlighted and select copy. Then be able to paste it here from clipboard.Hi sorry for the late reply. I was unable to save the copied data anywhere like a usb memory stick, as my computer was so slow. In the end i just fixed it to its original recovery position via the recovery disk, as i only used the laptop for surfing & had nothing to loose. The internet works fine now. ThanksNo problem with delay getting back to me. Glad your internet was fixed on this computer through factory system restore from system recovery disc(s).

Solve : Inspiron 1525 - Wireless card problems - Help!?

Answer»

Recently for an unknown reason the wireless CARD on my laptop has been unable to pick up any networks, my best assumption was that the wireless card was turned off via the 'wireless switch', although the inspiron 1525 has no visible wireless switch on the exterior. Clicking the 'diagnose and repair' option tells me to turn on my wireless card via the wireless switch because its turned off. I've tried the 'fn' + 'f2' hotkey to turn the card on, nothing. I've gone into the mobililty center and tried turning the wireless card on from there, but for some reason the "turn wireless on" button is greyed out, won't let me click it, why would this be? The device is enabled and working correctly according to device manager. I've tried re-installing drivers from dell but still the same problem.

Could this be a hardware problem that i'm gonna have to send away to get fixed?
This has me puzzled.

I'm running 32bit Vista Home Premium SP1
The device is a Dell Wireless 1490 Dual Band WLAN Mini-Card

This could be an infection, try running your computer in safe mode with networking and see if that works.
Also download Hijackthis http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exeonce you have installed it RENAME Hijackthis.exe to Anything.exe and run it and create a log and post it here. (This should be run in normal boot mode (not safe mode))

It may be that the network adapter is failing have you tried connecting with a plug and play adapter like a USB one? Thanks for the reply.
Tried safe mode with networking, no difference.

I've not tried any plug and play adapters as this is the only wireless device I have.

Well, I can't see anything malicious there, and it didn't work in safe mode, I guess it's not an infection... I think it may be a fault with your network adapter. Hopefully someone like Broni can help with the issue, you could try the following in the mean time.

Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In COMMAND Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
Restart computer, and check again.Tried everything you suggested with no success. I'm wondering if this could be an OS related problem which is just refusing to let me turn on the card, I might give a windows reinstallation a shot, couldn't hurt. If I still can't get a response from the card then it's probably faulty.Aye I know, to be honest I didn't think any of that would work SINCE you can't even get a connection in the first place... Maybe the adapter is just bummed. Hopefully it's a software issue, let me know if re-installing the OS worked. According to the manual: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins1525/en/index.htm, you do have wireless card switch. So it does! I can't believe it didn't notice it beforehand. But it was still turned on. I'm trying a fresh OS just now.Let us know...New OS seems to have done the trick, bit of a pain but at least its fixed now. Thanks guysCool

Solve : Cant access a machine on the network?

Answer»

hallo there is this machine i set as a DOMAIN controller RUNNING windows SERVER 2008 that i am unable even to ping from client machines running windows7 proffessional but they can remotely connect to the server and even access the same network. so what might be the problem here and how can i got about it? please assistsHave you done this before? Why do you need a domain controller?
Do you have a security problem?
When using Windows 7 on all other machines, a domain controller is not really needed. Unless you just want it.

You have ALREADY looked at this?

Solve : connection keeps dropping?

Answer»

My sister and I have the same type of laptop. Everything has been going smooth as butter, but TODAY her laptop has lost most or all of the bars to the internet, and now she cannot do anything. When she tries to download anything from the internet it says it has been interrupted and the connection to the internet then cuts off. When she tries to load a video on YOUTUBE, that won't even load up. Anyone know any ideas? It is Windows 8.If your computer is side by side hers as to location and you have 5 bars and she has no signal, that usually means 1 of 4 things.

1.) Driver she is using has issues with wifi adapter.

2.) Antenna Internal to Laptop for wifi has come loose ( popped off the wifi NIC )

3.) NIC is malfunctioning
For #1 if you verify that her laptop and yours are both using the same driver and driver VERSION, then its likely not a driver issue.

4.) Software driver corruption etc.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

For #1 you can verify the driver between your laptop and hers if the same exact model. Or download the wifi driver for Windows 8 using your laptop and place this on a thumb drive. Then insert thumb drive to her system and install the wireless network adapter driver. This will replace the prior driver. Its best to get this driver from the laptop manufacturers website, and use the wireless network adapter driver for the same model that her laptop is.

For #2 you can verify that its connected properly by locating the access panel on the underside of the laptop. Most have a small panel that requires a torx or philips screw removed in which the Network Adapter is then able to be seen. This network adapter will have 1 or 2 wires with an insulator on it with a small gold button plug that plugs into a gold plated button jack on the Wireless NIC. If this has come loose, it just needs to carefully be snapped BACK into the button connection. ( You may not hear or feel it snap, but it should be locked to the Adapter board and not pop off if touched etc. The center of this button connection has a gold pin which is used to make the connection from the adapter to the antenna.)

For #3 if this computer is still covered by warranty you might want to use the warranty before it expires, however I'd try option #4 first.

For #4 reset the system back to factory settings by using the system recovery feature that came with the laptop. *Be sure to backup any important data first to an external hard drive or a thumb drive before doing so as for all personal data could get wiped out if you perform the factory restoration and not the factory repair option.

Solve : Brand New Laptop having Wifi connection problems?

Answer»

Hello, I have tried doing quite a bit of troubleshooting myself before posting here, but I cant seem to figure out what the problem is. I bought my wife a new laptop for CHRISTMAS. The model of the Laptop is a Gateway NV56R14u. The model of my wireless router is a Linksys WRT54G v2.1. I have checked to make sure my firmware on the router is the latest firmware and it is. But my problem is, the laptop will connect to the network, says it has full strength, but will not seem to get a very good connection and sometimes no connection at all. When it does work, it still takes roughly 30 seconds or so to pull up a webpage, but most of the time it just comes back with "Page cannot be found" The router has worked with wireless computers in the past ( a buddy rented a room in my house for about 3 years up until about 6 months ago ) and our phones seem to connect fine. I have checked with the cable company and they had me do a speed test on my wired connection and it came back perfect. Anyone have any IDEAS what I need to do? Thank you in advance for the help.Assuming this laptop is not moved to a different location from where it works, and the connection comes and goes when nothing is moved, I would perform a network search to see if anyone else in your neighborhood is also on say Channel 6, and if other wifi's are present, then set your wireless configuration up to a different channel than that of neighbors, and then connect to that new wifi connection setup and see if that helps. I have seen before where multiple wifi's within range of each other whether secured or not compete on the radio waves and cause issues and by changing to an unused channel, the problem with connectivity loss when you see strong signal strength is cured.Ok I will try that, and yes it will go from working to not working without being moved. The weird part is, over the past couple days of dealing with it, if my wife restarts the laptop once it loses connection, it seems to reconnect again. She doesnt ever seem to get a good solid connection where it just works though. I am mainly trying to figure out if it sounds like the wireless router just conveniently quit working once we bought this new laptop, or if there is something wrong with the laptop itself, or if I just have some kind of settings or something set wrong. But I will try changing it to a different channel, when I do that do I need to change any kind of settings on the laptop? or just the router? On the laptop you just need to scan for wifi and then select your wifi at the different channel detected. Then supply key etc to authenticate with your secured network. Then you should be all set to go. Only changes needed are really at the router with the wifi to run it on a different channel.

*Also when your in there, I'd make sure the routers default password has been changed from its manufacturers default to avoid being hacked. I write my new passwords with a sharpie marker on bottom of routers etc so that if I need to get into them 2 years later I dont have to perform a hard reset back to FACTORY default password when I forget the password that I used.

Also any other wifi devices already set up to work on this old wifi network channel will have to all be reinitialized to communicate on this new channel.Hi, I have the same crappy computer and I finally got it fixed by live chatting with Gateway. Here is a copy of the conversation. It seemed to have worked. Good luck!

Amit Agrawalla: Hi, my name is Amit Agrawalla. How may I help you?
Amit Agrawalla: Hi, Josh.,
Josh Delahan: Greetings,
Ever since I got this computer a month ago, I have had connection issues with the internet. I replaced a similar Gateway model with this laptop and the old computer never had connection problems, so I know it is not the router. I have seen other people have the same problem when I looked up this model on the internet, so there must be something wrong with it. Please advise.
Thank you,
Josh
Amit Agrawalla: I am really sorry to know that, I will do my best to help you.
Josh Delahan: thanks
Amit Agrawalla: May I know for how long are you facing this issue?
Josh Delahan: one month
Amit Agrawalla: Thank you.
Amit Agrawalla: Are you trying to connect the Internet through cable or WiFi?
Josh Delahan: WiFi
Amit Agrawalla: Okay, thank you Josh for the information.
Amit Agrawalla: Please, may I confirm your internet disconnects frequently and you are facing the issues with the internet?
Amit Agrawalla: Though you have checked the router it is working fine.
Amit Agrawalla: I am waiting for your response to assist you Josh.
Josh Delahan: yes. it will come up with the "Page Unavailable" message at least 10 or more times per day. I have to turn off the computer and turn it back on to regain connection, but then it will go out later on.
Amit Agrawalla: I am really sorry to know that.
Amit Agrawalla: Do not worry.
Josh Delahan: The reason why there was just a break in the conversation was because the connection went out just now. I had to refresh the page.
Amit Agrawalla: PLease let me know the vendor of the WiFi in your system?
Amit Agrawalla: Okay.
Amit Agrawalla: I will help you in this case.
Josh Delahan: AT&T Uverse
Amit Agrawalla: Okay, I will provide you with the link please let me know the vendor of the wifi driver
Amit Agrawalla: Here is the link : http://global-download.gateway.com/FilesDownload/HWID/HWVendorDetection.exe
Amit Agrawalla: Please let me know once you are done with it.
Josh Delahan: Please explain what the "vendor of the wifi" is. Do I use this link to find it?
Amit Agrawalla: Vendor of the WiFi means the manufacturer of the wifi driver in the system that you are using.
Amit Agrawalla: Yes, the link will tell you about the manufacturer of the wifi driver.
Amit Agrawalla: Please let me know once you are done with it.
Josh Delahan: I just used it. What is supposed to happen?
Amit Agrawalla: It will list you all the driver names and the manufacturer's name.
Amit Agrawalla: Please let me know the manufacturer of the WLan
Josh Delahan: Broadcom
Amit Agrawalla: Thank you for the information.
Amit Agrawalla: Please follow the link and download the updated driver for your system.
Amit Agrawalla: These will help you to fix the issue.
Josh Delahan: Which link?
Amit Agrawalla: Here is the link : http://global-download.gateway.com/GDFiles/Driver/Wireless%20LAN/Wireless%20LAN_Broadcom_6.30.59.20_W8x64_A.zip?acerid=634843975563885730&Step1=NOTEBOOK&Step2=NVSERIES&Step3=NV56R&OS=ALL&LC=en&BC=GATEWAY&SC=PA_6G
Amit Agrawalla: Please download from the link and install the driver to fix the issue.
Amit Agrawalla: I hope the information provided will be helpful to you.
Josh Delahan: It says it is downloading, but will take more than two minutes. Is there anything else we need to discuss or is that all that you can do to help?
Amit Agrawalla: Please download and install it will help you to fix the issue.

Amit Agrawalla: Josh, to conclude, I have provided you with the necessary information. If there are no further questions related to this topic, I will CLOSE the chat session.
Josh Delahan: Is there anything I need to do once it is downloaded?
Amit Agrawalla: Please install the driver once you have downloaded.
Josh Delahan: And that is it?
Amit Agrawalla: Yes, it will help you to fix the issue.
Amit Agrawalla: Please restart the system after it is installed.
Josh Delahan: OK, thank you, Amit.
Amit Agrawalla: You have been very co-operative and professional with us. I really appreciate your time.
Amit Agrawalla: It was a pleasure assisting you. Thank you for using Gateway Live Chat. Please feel free to chat again.
Amit Agrawalla: Take care.
Josh Delahan: you as WELL. Have a great day!

Solve : Viewing laptop content on a Smart TV.?

Answer»

Hello all !

Been a while hope all is well.

Here's my problem, At work we want to be able to view video content from a Laptop on our TV, wireless.
We will be using both a HP Envy laptop running 8.1 and a Acer Aspire running 7 to a Visio 46 inch Smart TV.

Thanks in advance,
MP.
Do you mean Vizio with a Z? What model?
Yes, Sorry, Vizio with a "Z".

Not sure what model. It is a TV at work, no paper work, and when I used the manual from the TV itself it didn't tell me.
It's 46 inches and about 4 years old. I can connect it to the router and we get Netflix but we need to connect a laptop to it
so we can do presentations etc etc power point. I KNOW apple has an external adapter you plug into the TV and does what we need but we don't use Apple at work and was hoping there was something out there for windows.

Thanks,
MP.Win 8.x supports Miracast so if you get a Miracast dongle that will plug into an HDMI port on the TV, you will be able to PROJECT the laptop's screen to the TV wirelessly.Strollin thanks much. The laptop does support Miracast and it sound like my 8.1 problem is solved.
Any hope for also getting the same results for 7 ?

Oftentimes the Miracast adapter will offer support for other OSes as well. Depends on the adapter you get. Thanks I'll dig deeper. I only read 2 reviews / articles and I was under the impression it was only for certain versions of firmware of 8.1 ? Luckily mine has it.

Thanks again. Some win 7 PC's may also support Miracast. May help someone else.

I have a PC or Android device. What do I need to stream video?

You also have two possibilities: Miracast or Chromecast.

Miracast is the most feature-rich technology, but not many devices support it. Here are the requirements.

Computers: Many newer Intel-based PCs and Windows 8.1 OS. (If you have Windows 8, you can upgrade to Windows 8.1 for free.) To see if your hardware supports Miracast, from the Start screen, swipe from the right, click "Devices" and then select "Project." If you see "Add a wireless display," your PC is up to the challenge. Some Windows 7 PCs also support Miracast, but it can be a nightmare to figure out. Go with Chromecast instead.Chromecast's ability to display video content stored locally on your computer is very limited. It WORKS best with services like Netflix and Hulu that have applications that support Chromecast.

What type of video content are you wanting to use?

I own and have used both Miracast and Chromecast and frankly, neither work as well as an HDMI cable connection between the laptop and TV.

Does your Vizio TV support DLNA? If so, another possibility is to run a media server on the laptop that your TV can connect to and play videos stored there. I have Vizio TVs that can do that but they are newer than the one you have. If the TV is smart enough to have a DNLA client built in you could install a free DLNA server on the laptop such as Plex or Serviio and then stream over a wireless or wired Ethernet NETWORK connection. The model number will usually be on a makers label on the back of the set. One 46" Vizio model number is M3D460SR. The DLNA client functionality may be included in an option called "Media".

Me and Strollin had the same idea.

You can get DLNA dongles for older TVs that do not have a client built in.

You can wirelessly mirror Laptop/Mobile/Tab screen to your Samsung TV through a new device name prijector .

Its a Airplay for all your devices and works very well for presenting wirelessly and wireless video conferencing from famous apps like Skype hangout Microsoft Lymc Cisco jabber .Have a great weekend

Hello:
I am looking to create a service that my user(REQUEST) can request information via personal dashboard from multiple users(replay) via email.

the point is to aggregate all the replay in centralized interface.

for that purpose I would like to set up our services that we assign an inbox to EVERY new user (request) so all the replay from (replay) users will be collected to the specific inbox.

for that purpose we would like to assign the subdomain as follow [emailprotected] (so the users can have the first email they have at our domain)

please let me KNOW what is the best way to do it
Thank you

You should consult with a hosting company you like.
Ask about cPanel and WHM services.
Otherwise, you BUY a web service that lets you host your own domain name and crate e-mail accounts.
At this moment, the cPanel documentation site is down. BU the information is also found from other sources.
Start here:
https://documentation.cpanel.net/displayALDcPanel+User+Documentation
I use it for some of my e-mail. Works most of the time.

Solve : Wifi adapter help?

Answer»

I BOUGHT a bolse wifi ADAPTER (http://www.amazon.com/Network-adapters-300Mbps-Wireless-N-Adapter/dp/B00EZV8ZJI/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1437935038&sr=1-2&keywords=bolse+wifi+adapter) to use on my balcony outside because I wasn't getting great wifi. It worked like a charm with increasing the reach of the network. Only PROBLEM is, now when I try to disconnect the bolse anywhere in the house (even downstairs where I get great recception) I am now unable to. I tried to eject via the computer, and also just removing it, and neither works, the computer doesn't see any networks once I remove the adapter. I am only able to receive wifi if I plug in directly to the ethernet CABLE. HELP!

Solve : DDWRT Range Expander or Repeater issue?

Answer» HELLO,

Architecturally the repeater connects to another wireless router as a client. Range Expander or Repeater is what i am trying to do. My main router which is ASUS RT-N56U is having alot of issues
i sent it back to ASUS and they send it back to me with no fix so i did everything i can to make it work but no luck. so i got Linksys E2000 and used it and found out it drops network connections also just like ASUS so that was waste of time and money. i deiced to give DDWRT a TRY so after 2 days of reading and searching the net i got DDWRT into Linksys E2000. and i set it up as WiFi Repeater but no luck. i am not sure what i am doing wrong but everything is configured properly as far setup goes but i am not able to see the signal BOOST or any change.

Some of the issue i see with my setup is:
1- unable to login via WiFi to repeater, i have to use eithernet and change ip address to login or access
2- Not SEEING boost in signal even with proper SSID been repeated

I am adding screenshots of my setting please note i have not made any change to my ASUS Router nor 2nd router is connected via Ethernet cable to ASUS

Please advise

Thanks in advance

Solve : Weird cannot interpret problem?

Answer»

Hi folks - this is rather strange and I have pretty much exhausted my limited knowledge base attempting to resolve the issue.
The system is Win 7.
We use a wireless router/modem from Comcast.

The issue cropped up a few weeks ago and I have managed to resolve it, but never for more than a day at a time - which means it isn't truly resolved.

When using the wireless, sometimes the system will connect immediately and other times won't connect at all. Yet, the icon showing how strong the connection is never drops below the good to excellent level. At first I thought this was a typical Comcast problem, but it occurs with other wireless AND wired connections elsewhere. So, I reconfigured the connection confirming that the connection was valid. This seemed to help for a few days, but then the issue reemerged. At this time I concluded it was an issue with the router/modem and got a replacement. Unfortunately, the issue continues. I thought it might be something with the network card, but since the system works just fine elsewhere, this ruled that out. Meanwhile, we are having problems sending and receiving e-mail. At times there is no problem and at others it is impossible to use e-mail at all. There are never any error messages.

To further complicate matters, we've discovered that our iPad FINDS the network with no problem and that we can send and receive e-mail on that device. Yet, when we take the computer to another location the issue goes away only to return upon coming back home. The "sometimes" nature of this problem is making it really difficult to understand. To be clear: at no time does the connection bar drop below the "good" level - in fact, most of the time it lands in the excellent range. Since the iPad finds the network without trouble, I doubt this is a network issue. But then how can it be a wireless card issue since the card works great elsewhere? I've passed this through Comcast, but those of you who have Comcast, probably well understand why I cannot fully rely on their help and information. But having used another laptop with the network and having never EXPERIENCED issues with that one, this leaves me completely puzzled. If the network signal is good and the network card appears good, and the network is accessible by other devices, what the heck should I be looking at for the computer? Dictation. Please excuse bad grimmer.
I sympathize with you very much. I use Comcast over a wireless connection to my neighbor. And yes, I have for permission. The quality of my connection is marginal, yet sometimes I can watch entire movie on my Roku to and not have any significant interruptions. Well, maybe a PAUSE once in a while until it buffers some data.
What I mean to say is that I have a lot of trouble with my networking scheme and I've been fiddling with it for literally years. That doesn't seem to be any way one can guarantee a perfect connection. I have used AT&T DSL, Comcast cable, and digital path broadband. Of these, the digital path probably was the most reliable.
As far as I know this may be a common problem with many users. At least the ones that get perfect reception ever complain about it, obviously!
Here are some things that can interfere with your wireless reception. For one thing, one of your neighbors may be using the same channel as you do for wireless. In that case you will have to change your wireless to another channel to see if you get better results. Unfortunately, the tools that come with Windows don't seem to help for a much for taking channel numbers. So far the only way I have FOUND to check the channels is by using some kind of third party software to tell me what channels are being used in my neighborhood.
Still, with a strong signal it should not make much difference. A possible problem is that Comcast may be doing something that they have not documented or explained clearly. For example, they put a limit on the number of devices you may have connected at one time. If they do that, and the you have not disconnected your other devices, then they will block your computer from getting into network untill you remove the other devices. So, how many devices do you have? You have a iPad, an iPhone, a Wee, and maybe a laptop?
Another source of possible trouble is from your microwave oven. But that would only happen while the microwave is actually running. Another possibility is the presence of a wireless mouse.
The fact that you do not have the problem in somebody else's house would suggest that there's something in your house that gem interferes with your wireless connection. However, you have mentioned that even with a wired network there are problems. So it is hard to generalize what is causing the problem. In some cases, very rare, a wireless device that gets into the network can interfere with the entire network. That usually means a serious defect in some piece of hardware. So you might consider replacing some of your Wi-Fi cards with external adapters. You would disable the built-in wireless card and use a USB dongle to pick up your wireless s signal.
One more thing, and I know I'm going to get FLAK on this, aren't you using USB 3.0? Because USB 3.0 can really mess up a wireless network. It has been documented elsewhere.
That's all I can think of now. As for me, I am used to resetting both my routers at least once a day just to keep the connection going. I am not sure why that makes a difference, but that's the way I have to cure the problem.
Hope this helps.
Thank you for your response. I realized - late - that my original post is a bit confusing. Of-course, this issue is more than a bit confusing!

We are in the country and our nearest neighbors are too far for us to tap their system, so this shouldn't be an issue. The part that has me puzzled is the intermittent nature or the problem coupled with the location dependent issues. At home, the laptop may or may not recognize the network. On the road, it immediately connects once authorized. At home, the computer always recognizes the network, but still sometimes won't connect or won't stay connected. I've refreshed the router/modem numerous times without any change in status. Meanwhile, the iPad usually connects and stays connected, even when the laptop doesn't. This seems to rule out an issue with the modem/router. (?) I've switched from wireless to wired without any noticeable improvement. Then, with nothing changing, the laptop will connect and run with no issues. The next time, the laptop won't consider connecting. The same thing happens when attempting to send/receive e-mail: it does normal and then the next time it won't send or receive.

I know a lot of things can interfere with a wireless signal, but the fact that the iPad will connect when the laptop won't puzzles me. I would assume something was wrong with the wireless card on the laptop, except it works just fine anywhere but at home. If the iPad also wouldn't connect or if the laptop showed problems when connecting elsewhere, I'd understand better, but this just doesn't make sense to me. It's incredibly frustrating! Oh no. I happened again. Connection broken.

Let me expand just one thing. Interference from something in your house.
Example: You might have a printer c connected with USB 3.0 while at home. When you leave, you do not take the printer with you. As I mentioned. USB 3.0 is a known source of interference to Wi-Fi. (Not an issue with USB 2.0 devices..) Now your iPad is not connected to the printer. So no problem. The problem is intermittent because it is. There is no rule that says trouble has to be steady and always present.

I also mentioned use an external USB WI-fi adapter. Somme of these little things prove to be more reliable that the built-in witless in the laptop! Really! And cheap. Under $10 on Amazon or eBay. Even Walmart.

Some Wi-Fi devices fail when the overheat. This just do. The cure is to disable them and use a USB dongle thing instead. The doge will not overheat.

Size is about the size of a thumb.
That little guy is about $4 at Walmart. They really do work.
Thanks for the followup. I will certainly try your idea of the external wifi adapter. However, what has me puzzled is the fact that when I connect the laptop via cable to the modem/router (hard wire) we still have the on-again/off-again connection issue. If this was a case of wireless interference, wouldn't hard wiring the connection eliminate the problem? I'm sorry if this is a stupid question or if I'm confused. I'm far from being a pro at any of this. Quote from: Carney on November 09, 2015, 06:08:16 PM

Your line of reasoning is goo. However, the router can be overloaded with any wireless device that gives frequent errors. That is why I recommend disabling the other device for a test.So I disabled everything but the laptop and router. This didn't change anything. I haven't had the chance to get the external WIFI adapter, but will do so tomorrow when I go into town.

Solve : Why is my estimated usage on wifi increasing by 1-3 mpbs per second.?

Answer»

Hi,

This meter on the attachment increases by 0.1 to 0.3 mpbs per second even THOUGH I do not have any high usage background apps and am not attempting to download anything. Even if I leave the laptop idle, it continues to increase.

I do not know what the problem is. I am a University student. I am just concerned that when I leave University to go home in a few days it may kill the internet bandwidth. I have 10 gb at home.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Best test would be to bring it to a different wifi network other than the SCHOOL and see if you still receive the same Traffic. Additionally be sure you have latest AV and its clean after scan. Lots of games COME with torrent services that will download patches and info behind the scenes... I have doubts that this is the CAUSE because .1 to .3 mbps is a trickle and I would expect more bandwidth consumption, however if the school has certain ports throttled then you could see .1 to .3 mbps received/download speed. Additionally if lots of people are on the internet and they are congested this could even be a MICROSOFT update squeezing its way through limited bandwidth out to the web and looking like its only .1 to .3mbps that if connected to a network without the throttling or bandwidth congestion it could soar to 2mbps or greater from the .1 to .3mbps trickle.

Solve : Help! One wireless problem and one problem that's more difficult to explain?

Answer»

Problem 1) The PC is a Windows 7, 8GB RAM, desktop with Avast Antivirus, and Zone Alarm firewall. A few weeks back, I moved from Talk Talk to Virgin, and got a much faster download speed (50Mb/s). My PC doesn't have a wi-fi built in, so I had to buy a PCI wi-fi adaptor (made by Tenda), installed it, installed the driver from the CD, it detected the Virgin signal, I entered the passkey, and everything was great. I tried a couple of broadband speed websites (such as http://www.speedtest.net/ and http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/) and they reported that my speed was 50Mb/s

But a few days back, the internet connection started to RUN slowly, so I tried the broadband websites, and they said I was only getting ~5Mb/s. I've not changed anything hardware or software-wise on the PC (other than the manditory updates to Windows and virus killer, etc).

I used my tablet (w-fi, of course) and it said that I was STILL getting 50Mb/s, so the problem was obviously with my desktop.

So I phoned Virgin, who couldn't find a fault over the phone, so they sent a bloke around, who checked the router (it was working, plus his device got the full speed over the wi-fi from it), and he connected a cable from the router to my desktop (which I couldn't do, since the desktop is upstairs, the router downstairs), and even by wire the desktop only got 5Mb/s, even though when stood next to the desktop, both my tablet and his phone/whatever got full speed via wire-less. So presumably the problem is not the wire-less PCI card or it's driver, since even if we use a cable then the desktop still only gets 5Mb/s.

I've uninstalled Avast! Antivirus (although I didn't think it would be that), and it's not helped, and I disabled Zone Alarm, and still no change.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Problem 2) Anyway, every couple of months I create a 1:1 copy of my C: drive using Acronis Home Image (I used to use Norton Ghost years ago, until I discovered Achronis). So I thought I'd just put on my LATEST C: drive back up, and if it read the broadband at full speed, then I'd use that installation, and update the programs manually.

So I recovered the last backup, from a month or so back, and everything worked except the net connection. There was no wi-fi icon in the Windows 7 task bar (the ascending slopes made up of vertical columns), just the square with a plug icon that you get pre-wireless era. And when I TRY to access wi-fi, I get told that there are no wireless connections available. The driver for the PCI wi-fi dongle was installed (I must have made this backup not much after I went over to Virgin) but Windows wasn't showing the wi-fi icon.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver, but still no joy. Windows says that the device (the PCI network connector) is working perfectly, and Device Manager marks it as working (no yellow exclamation mark).

I went to my two earlier backups, neither of which have the wi-fi card driver installed, so I installed it, with the same result; no wi-fi icon in the task bar, and Windows says it can't find any wireless connections. So of course I though that the wi-fi card might have broke, or had some sort of setting disabled, but fortunately, before I'd reinstalled the backups of C:, I made a backup today, with the problem I describe in problem 1, so I reinstalled that backup (from today), and now the wi-fi card is working, although for whatever reason the PC is still only getting 5Mb/s.

So I installed the earlier backups, and no matter what I do, I can't get the wireless to work with those. And it *definitely* worked in the first backup before I made that backup (it worked and so I decided to make that backup, I wouldn't have made that backup back then if the wi-fi hadn't been working, I'd have fixed the problem first), so I don't know what the problem is.

Again, any light shone on this problem would be much appreciated.

Details of the adapter are:

Manufacturer:Ralink Technology, Corp.

Location:PCI bus 1, device 8, function 0

Driver Provider: Ralink Technology, Corp.

Driver Date:19/04/2011

Driver Version:3.2.1.0

When I use

CONTROL PANEL > DEVICE MANAGER > NETWORK ADAPTERS > 802.11n. Wireless Lan Card

in both backups (the modern one I made today, which is of course the one where broadband works but only at 5Mb/s, and also the backup from a month or so ago, where the broadband can't be read for some reason) then I get the same values in all of the tabs, except that the IRQ is listed in the

CONTROL PANEL > DEVICE MANAGER > NETWORK ADAPTERS > 802.11n. Wireless Lan Card > RESOURCES

tab in the working (but slow) backup as 0x00000013 (19) whereas in the broadband-not-working backup, the value is 0x00000011 (17)

Windows won't let me edit the entry (in the tab's box, I don't know where else to edit it).

Can anyone help, please.

Apologies if I haven't explained this too clearly. Basically,

1. For some reason, my desktop has stopped receiving broadband (via wireless) at 50MB/s, it's now around 5MB/s. Other wireless devices still receive it at 50MB/s, so it's not the router, it's the desktop (as confirmed by the engineer who Virgin sent, and who wasn't allowed to make changes to my PC, only to the router). Even wired up to the router, the desktop only reads 5MB/s, which makes me think it's not the wireless itself at fault.

2. I've done a clean boot (from an Avast! CD) and scanned the PC, no viruses or malware. I've reset the router. The desktop still only downloads at 5Mb/s, whilst my tablet downloads at 50Mb/s (this is according to various "how fast is my broadband?" site.

3. I have various backups, from a month back, total images of my C: drive. So I thought I'd reinstall one of those, as that would surely not include whatever corrupted file or wrong setting that is causing the problem now. So I first made a backup of the current state, in case I needed to go back, then put the last backup on my PC. But for some reason, that backup (and the two earlier ones) will not see any wi-fi connections, even though I've reinstalled the wi-fi driver, but there's no wi-fi icon in the task bar.

I'll include all available data that I think might be important, in the next post (it's long!)[Continued from the above post]

In today's backup (which was made of the original state, with the 5Mb/s download speed) which I've put back on to check that the wi-fi works (it does) the settings for the connection are:

Solve : Router vs Switch?

Answer»

I have a 4-port router and a 16-port switch. My internet is 30Mbps.

The ports on the router is connected to 2 PCs, a server, and the switch respectively.

My question is, how is the bandwidth distributed AMONG the 2 (on router) + 15 (on switch) PCs in the whole setup?

I FIND that when I sync some FILES from a PC to the server, it's way much slower for a PC that is connected to the switch compare to a PC that is connected to the router. You may have answered your own question. Most of the work is done by the router. The switch is a more simple device.
Here is one definition:
Quote

Switches create a network. Routers connect networks. A router links computers to the Internet, so users can share the connection. A router acts as a dispatcher, choosing the best path for information to travel so it's received quickly.

What is the speed of the router? The switch? some routers can do gigabit.
Bandwidth is not evenly divided between the ports, if one device is downloading at full speed it will get 30mbit, if 2 are downloading they will both get 15mbit and so on, it doesn't matter whether they are plugged into the router or the switch. What speed is the router and the switch? If the router is gigabit but the switch is only 10/100 that would explain why it is faster to transfer data to the server from the PC connected to the router rather than a PC that is connected through the switch.Additionally, if the 2 computers were connected direct to the Router vs one or more to a 16 port switch you would remove a small amount of LATENCY since the switch has to repeat communications from the router. The amount of latency should be very small with just 1 added switch. Latency is more of a problem if you have a bunch of switches daisy chained together and nodes at the further end from each other then have the greatest latency with repeating the packets to each other to pass down the line.

Have you pinged while not transferring data to make sure that your latency is low and consistent. And then ping during data transferred between local server and pc for a local file transfer as well as during an outbound data download.

This screenshot is of my latency that is holding steady at less than 1ms. I have a Router at the end of the 8 port unmanaged switch. I also have other devices sitting idle on the 8 port switch, and I am performing a persistent ping between my router that is down stairs through my 8-port switch upstairs while I am also downloading a Linux Mint 17.2 distro which is exercising my local network with traffic while testing for latency. Your latency should also be very little, less than 30ms as a worst case scenario and best to be less than 10ms like mine. If your latency is jumping around while network is idle then your hardware or Cat5 or Cat6 cable might have troubles with noise etc. If latency CLIMBS and is erratic greater than 30ms during a download or local data transfer then this is also a sign that something isnt quite right and should be troubleshot further. * This is only for local ping latency, not for pinging to an outside source on the web to avoid confusion.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Hi Geek-9pm/camerongray,

I've checked that the router is a gigabit router (Aztech DSL7000GR(SME)) and the switch is a 10/100 (D-Link DES-1016D), so that explains why there are such a big difference between the two transfers.
