Solve : please help me?

Answer»

Is it possible for an online dating service,no 3 online dating services, to create profiles with user names and passwords that you commonly use on other websites, for you without your permission? And will spam alone cause temporary internet files and cookies to be stored in your hard DRIVE from these same websites? I've recently found these things and my husband DENIES everything, im a pretty cool wife and have no problem with him looking at pics online but dating service and friend finders are another story, he says none of his friends have been on our computer to do this for him , and he has never registered with a dating service, i was able to log in to all 3 and find profiles with screen names and passwords that he has used on usual internet accounts(yahoo, myspace) of course the profiles were all but empty by the time I got to them but they existed. there are 100's of temp int files on my computer with links to pics, winks, but he STRONGLY denies all of this and swears something very weird is going on please help me. Is this possible? Please do not be afraid to give your opinion on this.I know it's a personal sitiuation. But im really just looking for opinions on the specific tech matters. What is possible is if the owner of the sites is the same person or company they can and do BUILD accounts on other sites. This means that he may have signed up with one of the sites and the other two were created automatically. Or he could have signed up to a 4th site and the 3 you found were MADE automatically.

Sometime the web sites offer "free" access to other sites to make you think your getting a deal when you SIGN up with one of their sites.

Or a "friend" of his signed up to the site as him from there own computer as a "joke"

Solve : Blu Ray Connectivity Issue - Test My Thinking??

Answer»

Need to test my logic.

Preface: I'm living in Australia, my wife is in USA. Before I left, hooked up BluRay player to home network (primarily for Netflix), everything was A-OK for SEVERAL months. Now, she can't get it to connect.

My home network is thus:
- Verizon DSL
- Goes into an ActionTec combination Modem/Wireless Router, SSID "Net1"
- CAT5 cable runs from back of router to PowerLink adapter
- Additional PowerLink adapter runs into back of Belkin N300 wireless router, SSID "Net2"

BluRay player was CONFIGURED to connect to Net2.

Had the wife pull up the network ID on the Blu Ray, and it was a 169-based IP, not the 192.168.1.xxx I was expected. 169 means it can see the router, but not the internet, correct?

Laptop and Printer are both connected to Net1.

With LogMeIn, I can connect to the laptop on Net1see that Net2 is broadcasting.

My wife says her iPad is connected to Net2. (That's not 100 percent reliable data, though.)

Via LogMeIn, I can ping the printer and I can also log into the Belkin router.

So here's my question:
- If the HOUSE is getting Internet traffic (which it is, if I can log in)
- And using the house network, I can log on to the Belkin router (Net2)
- And the Belkin router (Net2) is broadcasting

...Shouldn't that imply that anything connected to Net 2 should be able to access the internet?

Tomorrow evening I will get on the phone and try to walk her through re-setting up the BluRay, but is my presumption about internet traffic sound? Or COULD it be something as simple as rebooting the router? (Which is stashed behind heavy stuff).

Thanks!

The router is not giving the blu-ray an IP from DHCP pool is the problem I am guessing. To correct this, it should be easy. Unplug power to blu-ray player so it does not hold its old IP settings of 169.x.x.x , then shut off the router for a minute by unplugging its power. Plug router back in and allow for it to initialize and come online. This usually takes LESS than a minute. Next power up the blu-ray and it should request an IP from DHCP and now be on 192.168.1.x

Solve : Monitoring software??

Answer»

This should be easy. I'm not a networking person so EXCUSE me if this is a dumb question. Is there some sort of software that I can run on one of my computers on my little SOHO network that will monitor ALL traffic in and out of all connected computers in the network and save it out as some sort of log file. My router is a Netgear WGR614 V7 and it has log capabilities. But I know it is not showing me some of the places that are surfed or all the other types of connections (ftp, POP3, etc.). One of my computers was attacked by the infamous XP Antivirus 2008 which downloaded a whole BUNCH of junk. My cable provider sent me a notice that "traffic with the characteristics of spam was being sent from one of the computers at my address". I look through the Netgear logs and don't see anything unusual. By using MALWAREBYTES, Stinger, AVG, a-Squared and others, I believe I have rooted out all the crap, but I want to make sure. Also, I would like to monitor where my 13 YO daughter is going. This trojan got downloaded when she was using it, and she either is not telling me where she went, or actually doesn't remember. One of the detection and removal tools said there were 2 trojan droppers, one in an MP3, the other in an AIF. These are audio files that she claims she got from Limewire. Limewire, as I understand it, is a standalone application. But it does connect through the Internet. So I should be able to get a log of this right?

Thanks.Have a look at these
You can find freeware alternatives too on Download.com

My advice is to get rid of Limewire ASAP - it's dirty and nasty and will always leave something unwanted on your machine, just like Kazaa used to!Quote

Solve : Sharing Internet connection?

Answer»

Hello Everyone!

I share my internet with my neighbours.I have connected their cables to my modem(4 Ethernet Ports in total) and they use it as they like ( on laptops, tvs, desktops etc...).Just a few days ago, everything was going fine. Then my ISP upgraded my connection and GAVE me new username and password to start browsing. So I went to 192.168.1.1, logged in, reset the settings(restore default settings) and then used that username and password.
So we started browsing and all was fine. However, the resetting did something. Two of the ports are working (ETH1, ETH2).ETH1 is connected to my desktop and ETH2 is used by another neighbour. However, another neighbour says he's not getting the internet.I guessed it was problem regarding ports and I was right.I disconnected my ethernet cable and connected it to ETH3 and ETH4 and it SAID it was connected but was getting no internet access. However, everything was fine in ETH1 and ETH2.
What do I have to do in my broadband settings ( 192.168.1.1 ) to get the other ports to get back to normal?
P.S: A Huawei HG532B EchoLife modem.
Here's a screenshot , and I think I have to set something right from here:

[recovering DISK space, attachment deleted by admin]What does LAN setting show for settings? Everything in WAN looks correct for your setup.Does the documentation indicate there is an option to disable PHYSICAL ports?
If not, the ports have been damaged.

Solve : Connect two computers to aircard?

Answer»

Hello,
I have compass 597 aircard that I would like to use on a desktop that has windows xp sp2 and a laptop with vista premium at the same time. I thought I seen somwhere how to make the laptop a router but lost track of the web site. Well anyway what would be the best way to use both computers at the same time using 1 aircard. Im a novice so please be gental.

thanks!
arsWhat service provider are you using? It all depends on your service. They do make wireless routers for aircards. Heres an example: http://www.compuplus.com/i-Linksys-WRT54G3GAT-Wireless-G-Mobile-Broadband-Router-for-ATTTCingular-1012770~.html?sid=6syulc579hj6t45I have SPRINT service. So what I GATHER is that I need a router, a card for the desktop to talk to the router and my laptop has wifi built in and I THINK that I can you it to connect to the router, CORRECT?

THANKS!
ARSYea, get the router for the aircard, a wireless adapter for the desktop (you can use a USB adapter instead of the PCI card if you think that would be easier), and the laptop has built-in so that will be picked up. Any other QUESTIONS or issues, let us know. Good luck Thanks for the input. Now what would be a good router that not that expensive, and would I be able to use a blue tooth usb adapter to get it to the router?

Thanks!

Solve : Internet connection issue (Network cable unplugged/enabled)?

Answer»

I went through your great virus folks here just to clear up if it was one or not and i was told it all seems clean. So here is the dilemma.

"My tech folks have came out and deemed my cable(ish) internet (it is wirelessly transmitted from their tower to my roof and then via cord transfered to what they dubed a modem [teeeeeny thing] that then plugs into my computer) connection is...well fine. Its my computer ( my barely a month old HP pavillion dv9000) that is causing the connection to flicker at a consistent rate from "enabled" to "Network Cable Unplugged" . I called HP and they told me that is a virus that is doing this. Ahem. One I picked up from facebook and or myspace that automatically installs itself via java not necessarily from even someones page i visited but possibly a page ten times removed DUE to both sites being networking sites. Idk. And at this point dont care I just want the darn thing fixed. I can pick up wireless connections with out an issue and will be going PROBABLY tommorow to pick up a wireless router, but i still would like to know what the drama is with my computer!"

since they ruled out a virus here, any ideas? Ive disabled and then enabled the connection again and nada. When unplugged it properly just says network cable unplugged. So what the hey? Im trying to avoid sending it in to hp which would take at least 3 weeks all together.

It could be a bad cable or bad fitting on the cable. Make sure you wireless is disabled when your on cable and make sure cable is disabled when your using wireless. Doesn't sound like a Virus to me.

Aloha

EdBut wouldn't a bad cable or fitting on the cable stop another computer form being able to USE it? Another used it just fine. Also Wireless was disabled when i was trying to use the cable but it still was flickering. What Windows version is it?Quote from: Broni on August 22, 2008, 08:29:30 PM

What Windows version is it?
She's using Vista SP1.

And I didn't realize that you said that another computer was tested on the same modem and cable, Hanna. I guess I'll stop blaming them. Heh. That does CONFUSE me a bit, though. I'm unfamiliar with Vista, so I don't know if it could be contributing to the problem or not. What do you think, Broni? You certainly know a heck of a lot more about Vista than I do.

I wonder if Vista Firewall might be configured improperly. Also...as your computer starts booting up, repeatedly hit the F8 key to get to the boot menu and select Safe Mode With Networking. Are you still able to connect to the internet? If so, how does it act?Ok So yesterday bought the wireless router, and to configure it I have to PLUG my machine into it via the same loopy port thats been doing this to me...and you know what? It connected fine. absofickenlutley fine. But of course when i tried my isp's cord it still wont connect to it and gives me the same bs. So it has to be my isp's cord they gave me fritzing... but only when plugged into my computer. Yet that same cord plugged into and worked with someone elses who had xp....

I dont know but Im giving them a call monday to tell em. What a headache!

Thanks for trying to wrap your brains around this one!No problem, Hanna. If you manage to find out anything from your ISP, be sure to let us know.

Solve : Help with internet traffic management?

Answer»

I need help with regulating and monitoring internet traffic within my organisation.

We are located in a remote location where cable internet is erratic. So for redundancy we have a satellite internet connection as well. While the wired connection is an unlimited plan, the satellite one is a pay per MB one. Hereafter I shall refer to the wired connection as A, and the satellite connection as B.

Here's what I want to achieve:

1. Give access to the internet to users through a single high power router on which both the internet connections are working.

2. Using A as the default connection for all users. Connection B to be activated only when A is not functioning.

3. Keeping a log of the data usage of each user, filtered by MAC address for the usage on connection B.

4. Some means of letting the user know which connection he is using at any point of time, so that he can regulate his use accordingly.

I have enough machines and can dedicate one for the purpose of regulating and monitoring. I am also okay with purchasing additional hardware or software for this purpose. I have working knowledge of linux and am willing to try a solution on it.
I set up a similar inexpensive backup network gateway to the internet between two sites, and used a piece of software CALLED Alert PING Pro http://www.bestshareware.net/alert-ping.htm. I bought a license of this software to ping over Network A to a destination, and upon a loss of connection with a server at the other end of Network A, a script that I programmed would run and sever the connection with Network A as the Gateway and turn the alternate Gateway connection through Network B which was SLOWER, but kept the food store running until Network A was healthy again in which it would not sever the connection to Network B automatically until after the stores were closed for the evening as for the Point of Sale traffic etc did not like to be severed mid stream of transmissions between sites. Our Network B connection was a private DSL connection between 2 main sites that also had outbound to internet through DSL connection at the remote site which was able to be BRIDGED to the main site.

Basically I had a redundant Gateway where Site B would just about always connect over a T1 to the other site to go outbound over Cable Broadband through Site A. IF Site A lost its internet, I had it set up that the Gateway at say 192.168.1.1 at Site A would be shut down, and then a Gateway at Site B would activate on the LAN at 192.168.1.1 with a gateway for all systems to share through the DSL internet connection at Site B. Since these 2 sites had less than 254 network devices with a network bridge between them this was very easy to do.

Alert Ping Pro works awesome for this type of application and does not cost much. This software also can alert you when the latency gets bad etc, or can kick on an alternate path out to the internet when you have excess traffic that is making things latent.

*There was no notice to the users though with my setup. My setup was to work seamless so that people were not even aware that the one gateway was down. But if someone was downloading something like a 25mb PDF etc, they could probably tell the difference between the Business Class Broadband Connection of around 67mbps download and 24mbps upload compared to DSL which was just 4mbps down and 1mbps upload. I suppose if you wanted to you could trigger a e-mail to people to make them aware of this alternate gateway is active and please limit your internet access to that of which is extremely important.

Solve : USB Wireless Network?

Answer»

I have been trying to set up 2 computers using just purchased usb wireless adaptors betwen 2 computers (one laptop) both running identical Windows XP SP2. The wireless connections are 100% fine signal strenth excellent etc etc. but I cannot see files on either computer, or connect to the internet from the laptop through the host computer (my PC tower). This is connected to a local microwave ADSL at about 1 Meg.

I have set up the TCP/IP and Subnet MASKS. I understand that ALL connections must have different IP address, but ALL Subnets should be the same. What about default gateways??

I have tried a mass of different combinations but to no avail. I am somewhat new to Networking - but I am at a LOSS here as to what to try next.Correct me if I'm wrong...

You have a total of three computers, two of them XP SP2, correct? What about the host computer...what operating system is on it? Is Internet Connection Sharing enabled on the host? Also...are any of your firewalls blocking the connections?

Here are some useful links:

Microsoft

Setting Up a Home NetworkI have just 2 computers. My host PC is successfully connected to the internet via a microwave connection giving me 1Mb. Only recently I upgraded my old Dell notebook to RUN XP. I bought 2 Wireless USB adaptors 802.11g - (one PCMCIA for the Dell). These are successfully connected to each other, but I cannot see either computer on the other one - nor can I connect to the internet from the Dell.

At the time of writing this I am not sure if the PC is configured for ISC. Can you tell me how to do this - though I will try after posting this reply.

Thanks again . . I have disabled all firewalls - does not make any difference . . Hopefully, this article will aid you...

Solve : changing filename but shortcut doesn't change?

Answer»

I am changing the name of an EXCEL 2007 workbook ('A.xls' to 'AB.xls') and then changing its location to another FOLDER.
I then am creating another workbook with the original name ('A.xls) and PLACING it in the original folder.
Very simple and routine.

I have a desktop shortcut pointed to the 'A.xls'workbook in the original folder.
When the 1st or old wb is renamed and moved the shortcut continues to point to it even though the wb has been renamed.

It is a shared folder on a network drive. I can manually change the path within my shortcut so that it points to the new folder but how can I be sure that other users shortcuts are pointed to t he correct file (wb)?

Is there an easy command or setting to assure that the short cut will point to the correct file in the correct folder?

Thanks,
bjf44 - somewhat bewildered. Normally you should not do that. Why do you want to do that?
Perhasp if you could explain why this is a logical THING do do, there would be an explanation.
I mean to say, if you can explain the problem to other people so that it becomes very clear, then the solution will PRESENT itself.
As it is, you explanation sounds like something you are not supposed to do.

Wrong spot...i took the liberty of moving it.Re: moving an EXCEL file
After much thought I discovered the 'gotcha' that got me:

The old wb 'A.xls' was moved to the new location before it was renamed.
Apparently the shortcut path followed it.

When both the new and the old workbooks were renamed (FIRST) in the original folder before moving the old wb to a different location the integrity of the shortcut was maintained. The shortcuts path and file name was preserved.

Many thanks to all those who viewed this problem,

Solve : Trouble connecting to home wireless network!!!?

Answer»

Just today my laptop started having trouble connecting. It's weird b/c it is actually connected to my network, but neither Firefox or IE will connect or any other application for that matter to the internet???

I'm a little confused so I tried unplugging the wireless router for a minute to reset it and still nothing. Then I tried deleting the network out of my laptop's wireless utility and then , readding it and still nothing.

What can I try next?

AndrewMy laptop did the same with my wireless network at home as well. I tried the same things you did and nothing worked. I EVEN called my service provider and they walked me thru all the steps to reset both my router and modem and to reconfigure my network and still nothing would work. they told me i would have to replace my router.

So to make a long story short here is what I ended up doing to get it working again.

1. Unplugged the network CABLE that runs from my modem to my router on the router side.

2. Plugged loose end of network cable into a different port on the router.

My problem was solved and I could get BACK to surfing the information superhighway once again with my laptop. I later switched the network back to the way it was originally to make sure that port was working and it still works fine.

It can't hurt for you to give it a try and see what happens. I know it isn't a really technical solution but some times it is the simple things. Also try resetting the modem. check the link lights on the modem to be sure that it is connected to the outside world. The weird thing is that this desktop I'm on now is connected to the wireless network and connects to the internet fine, but my laptop does not.

Thanks for your replies. I'll try out those suggestions.

Andrew

Yeah my desktop PC also worked fine. Like you it was just the laptops that connected wirelessly.I'am having exactly the same problem. My laptop was connecting fine this morning and all of a sudden the wireless network is dead. My desktop which is hardwired to the router works fine. But the laptop can't even detect the router. The only thing I haven't done is do a complete reset of my router. I have D-Link router WBR-1310 and all this has given me is trouble since I got it a year ago. I am fixing to go buy me another Netgear CAUSE the first one I had never gave me any problems, but a power surge burned it and bought this thing because the sales person highly recommend it. One thing I did notice is that another D-Link router popped up in my area and it's open. Could there be interference? I know my laptop adapter is working fine because I test it with this open line. Any other suggestions before resetting and STARTING from scratch?

Solve : Seagate External 4TB NAS?

Answer»

OK, Just got this to expand my music collection and there's an issue that I can't find the answer anywhere. Hopefully someone here has it already figured out. I started copying my music over to the new 4TB and a couple of days later while checking on the progress, I noticed that it DOWNLOADED the album art for most of my collection automatically. I went through all the trouble to remove this info and it put it back without warning. I’m sure there’s a setting somewhere but I can’t find it. Thanks in advance.

John
I have a Netgear NAS and never seen a NAS before seek for album cover art. This had to come from one of the systems that ATTACHES to the NAS. In addition to this, on my NAS it uses the XFS File System. I have never worked with a Seagate NAS, but most NAS out there are using LINUX file systems. XFS on its own would not seek album cover art.

The only time I have ever had anything carry over like this, was when I had a routine that backed up to this NAS and the information was altered on the local machine and passed over to my NAS.

You might be DEALING with the program that PLAYS the music that is populating the album art, such as iTunes etc. What player are you using? What Music Playback/management software are you using?I solely use Windows Media Player for all my music and it's been intact without Album Art on my 2TB Seagate GoFlex for almost 2 years now. It happened when I started copying my music over to the 4TB Seagate Central Drive. I guess I'll have to wait until Monday and call them direct and find out the problem.

Solve : 1 PC crippling internet for the rest... help!?

Answer»

I have a windows xp computer that is causing interference/crippling the wifi of my notebook pcs. This xp pc is next to the router and uses the Ethernet. And at some point, it could no longer connect. Or, it does sporadically.

At first I thought the Ethernet port was going bad, so I used a usb wireless adapter. It would also connect sporadically. Both METHODS would eventually lose connection if you surf long enough. And when I say long, I mean just a few minutes. Not only that, both methods will cripple our notebooks wireless connections.

Have you guys heard of anything like this or similar before? One PC causing other PCs to lose connection? What's more likely, the xp pc is the culprit, or a router going bad? I have verizon fios and they use an all in one modem/router.

I thought I would get some input before making a call to verizon to try and get a new router. Because if it's the PC, then I would be wasting time talking to verizon. Also, my gut just tells me it's not the router because it functions fine for the rest of the household. We have 2 notebooks, 1 desktop in the garage, various wife devices like printers and smartphones. They all function properly. Please advise. Thank you!Quote

You may have answered your own question. The process of elimination is a standard way of proving one device in a system the trouble.
An yes, things like that have been documented elsewhere.

You may have to put the bad PC in its own room. It does not play well with others. That is not really a joke, it is the RECOMMENDED solution. The 802.11 requires that devices respect each other, but sometimes this does not work very well.

Be aware the the information they provide is not a clear and concise ad it ought to be. It fact, it is kind of weak and meanders on. Looks like I write it.
The point is: Don't have some devices close to each other. It makes it HARDER for the more distant devices. Thanks!

I decided to do a fresh install of XP and it seems to play along just fine with the rest of network now. I GUESS at some point in time, we downloaded or installed something that caused a conflict. Solve : PC wont connect to modem/router?

Answer»

Hi Guys,

Firstly thanks for this forum it's always good to see people helping others.

Let me now start with my problem. I would like to list more info about my gear but im at work right now and to be honest i cant exaclty remember what i have. All i can tell you is im running Windows 7 professional and my motherboard has an onboard network adapter. My modem/router i just bought yesterday is a tplink TD-W8968.

A few days ago we had a thunderstorm and i remember waking up and screaming like a girl when a huge clap of thunder was right above my house shaking everything around. The next day i noticed my old dlink wasnt working. it was plugged in to the POWER but no light nothing.

Yesterday i went and bought the above router and whilst setting it up i noticed when i plugged my pc to the router/modem the connection light wasnt coming on. this was STOPPING the cd install from working as it needed the connection.

i GOT my laptop, also on windows 7 but home edition and plugged it in and the light came on. so i logged into the router from there and set up the network that way. internet working fine conneceted etc. my laptop is always on the wireless though and i need my pc hardwired.

this is what ive tried now: i did the whole restart pc and router etc. nothing.
i used different cables and tried both ends in different sockets.

after this i assumed maybe my network adapter got fried too so i went to control panel and CHECKED hardware, said the adapter worked fine. i also went to command prompt and did a ping from the pc and it said 4 sent 4 received 0 lost. so i assume now my network adapter is still working.
am i correct in this assumption?

is there anything else you guys can think of? my computer is fairly new so i assume all the equipment is up to the latest specs. seeing as my router/modem is brand new and NBN capable and network N is there a possible compatability issue with my network adapter and a newer modem or is that only possible with ancient machines? or not at all? you dont really need a certain spec of adapter do you?

thanks for your help in advance.

FaustoThere is a detail that is not clear to me. I will make an assumption.

I assume problem PC is a desktop and it was plugged into the router with a wire connection. I will also assume that the electrical discharge that zapped your old router also did some DAMAGE to the motherboard Ethernet adapter.
You can buy a PCI Ethernet card for a very low cost.
About $16 at Amazon. Or check with local stores.

You should report this to your DSL or cable provider. And contact your insurance company. DSL lines are supposed to have suitable protection for electrical discharges other that a direct lightning strike.

In the case of a direct lightning strike, the home owners insurance should cover damages. Surge protection does not prevent damage from a direct hit.

Solve : Network Domain & Network Workgroup ????

Answer»

Could someone tell me what the difference is between a network domain and a network workgroup?

I have 2 computers and 1 laptop on the same network and I would like to know which is safer......a domain or a workgroup.

Thank YouA workgroup is generally 10 machines or less on the same network (as with XP and Vista this is the maximum number for machines) - domestic and small business users

A domain is an enterprise of machines i.e. multiple NETWORKS ACROSS multiple locations - USUALLY medium to large businesses have domains, and these can span COUNTRIES as they USE the 'internet' to connect their networks.

HTHyou see this web site.

Solve : wireless connection set up?

Answer»

Hello all!

I want to KNOW wireless router connection set up.now i use internet by adsl with router
.I want to change by wireless router .My computer use window XP Service Part 2.
Pls provide me some instruction to install wireless router.

thanks for any advice.
green
What wireless router are you trying to install?

What internet connection did you have prior to this adsl?Try uploading the picture by Clicking Additional Options in the post.
This is my prior internet connection.
I'm not an expert in this field, but I'm pretty sure you just replace what is now the Ethernet Router in the diagram with the Wireless Router.Type your default gateway into your browser.
You will be able to set your wireless information and details there.

To find your default gateway:
Open up command PROMPT by creating a shortcut on the desktop.
In the prompt, type in 'ipconfig'I agree with carbon and don't worry about putting in the default gateway the computer and the router will take care of it by themselves. Then I would run the network wizard on your computers starting the with host which is the main computer and the do it on the rest of them and if you have a laptop run the wireless wizard also don't worry the computers will take care of the hard stuff. if you need any help come BACK here I or someone else can walk you THRU it okayThanks for all reply .I will try.

Solve : Connecting Client desktop to new wireless network...?

Answer»

In 2008 I asked for and received help on this forum installing an Ethernet LAN in my home. Now I am installing a Wireless LAN. Here is what I have: 1 new Lenova desktop w/Windows 7, a dlink router, Wildblue satellite service, 1 Dell C840 laptop w/Windows XP Home, and my OLD Dell Dimension 4500 desktop w/Windows XP Home. This will be a three computer wireless Network if I can ever get the computers connected.

I have the Lenova and Dell Laptop up, connected and running on my new dlink Wireless Router network, as well as I have my new HP Officejet 4620 up and running wireless too.

My problem:
I don't know how to get my old Dell Dimension 4500 desktop reconfigured to connect to my dlink wireless network. It says it is attempting to connect but never does. I don't know where to go and what to change to pave the way for it connecting to my wireless network. It has a Wireless Adapter INSTALLED, as does the Dell C840 Laptop.

Any detailed instructions are GREATLY appreciates...

Thanks in advance,

Solve : Belkin router connected but red X (no internet) xp sp3?

Answer»

Hi, first let me apologize for grammar I'm typing on my phone and its a pain.

I just moved in a coed house. I hookup my DESKTOP and phone to wifi and everything is running like a charm! I go to store, COME back an hour later and no internet. It says belkin 3008 connected. 54mbps! Excellent signal and everything but there's a red x by internet.

I don't understand my phone and desktop were working before I left. I just moved in today. I've had to bug the owner a few times, I really don't want to bug him again but I need my computer online. I don't even know where the router is. There's 6 other undergraduates here, there were 2 extra cars when I got back, maybe 2 many connected or something I don't know. I did sys. Restore. After searching I tried ip config. Black box appeared for one second. I tried other ipconfigs buy it did nothing. I know nothing about ipc and pinging.

Xp sp3, Comcast Belkin router, my wifi adapter is netgear. My phone also times out when USING this wifi but it shows connected...

Im typing from phone so keep in mind I probably won't be able to post logs, also im not a computer guru so please work with me. ThanksSince you have a connection to the router, the PROBLEM is likely the modem, which is what connects to the internet. Sometimes the modem & router are in one box (mostly for DSL), usually separate boxes for cable. If you are the only one in the house not able to get to the internet, it could be a security issue with the router, i.e. the router LEASE is expiring too soon. They may have it set up so no neighbors can use their connection. You will probably have to contact the admin (owner).

Solve : No internet connection after reinstalling XP?

Answer»

I was trying to install Lubuntu alongside Windows XP on my Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop, and accidentally deleted a volume I needed to boot XP...to make a long story SHORT, I repartitioned the C drive and reinstalled XP, then installed Lubuntu. EVERYTHING seems to be fine except I cannot access the Internet through XP. Firefox is fine on Lubuntu, and my desktop has access through the same router. I've TRIED reloading the drivers, and have no device flags except a yellow ? on a SM Bus Controller (which I'm thinking may be my PRINTER?) I would get rid of Windows altogether, but I have an application that I use that is incompatible with Linux. Any help would be appreciated. You need to go to either the WEBSITE of the motherboard manufacturer or the
website of the PC manufacturer and download and install the chip set drivers.

SM Bus Controller is part of the motherboard internal stuff. Not related to your printer.I had already downloaded and installed the chip set drivers from the Dell web site.Does the internet work/not work via Ethernet cable/Wifi?Open Device Manager - any yellow or red symbols?I have both my laptop and my desktop connected through the same modem via ethernet cable. My laptop also has wi-fi. My desktop works great (I'm on it now), but my laptop will not connect through Windows, although it will connect through Linux (Firefox).Solved! I used the Windows file transfer wizard to transfer Internet files and settings from this computer to my laptop.

Solve : 5ghz WiFi - Need to upgrade hardware??

Answer»

I received a ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router as gift from a friend who saw my old Linksys WRT54GL and felt that I needed a upgrade. Anyway after receiving it and setting it up, I noticed on my desktop that only the 2.4ghz network was being picked up my desktops wireless adapter and not 5ghz network. My wireless card stated it has support for IEEE 802.11b/g/n but I was curious if that was only 2.4ghz N and not 5ghz N and if I need to upgrade my wireless adapter? The wireless adapter for my desktop is a Rosewill RNX-N250PCe (RNWD-11005) Wireless Adapter:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166073

My second question in regards to 5ghz wifi in regards to my Xbox 360 250GB Slim. After doing some research I have learned that internal wireless N adapters for "Slim" edition of the Xbox 360 only have support for 2.4ghz N but not 5ghz N. I was wondering I can remedy this by simply purchasing Microsoft's external wireless a/b/g/n adapter which picks up 5ghz N? Will it conflict with the internal wireless adapter?
http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Network-Adapter-N/dp/B008K24BKU/ref=dp_ob_title_vg

My last question is that I want to purchase a Wireless N 5ghz Cardbus adapter for my laptop (personal reasons over a USB one) something like the one in the link below:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=3858940

But I can't seem to find any in stock anywhere. Any recommendations?
There really is no advantage or disadvantage for having a 2.4GHz network verses a 5GHz network.

The only thing that would concern you is network range. A 5GHz network has a significantly limited range compared to a 2.4GHz network.

Data speeds are the same, so I don't think it is worth changing. I have my desktop and Xbox S connected to my wireless 2.4GHz network, and they work perfectly fine.

In regards to your Wifi card, this might help you:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000WMK8TEYou have the question of bands, 2.4 GHz or 5 Ghz, and the question of which standard to use: 802.11g, 802.11n, or legacy 802.11a and b. Generally, 802.11n is better than 802.11g. It offers much faster data transfer, though fewer devices support it than the g standard. 802.11g functions only on the 2.4 GHz band, while 802.11n can be deployed on either the 2.4 GHz or the 5 GHz range. The range of 5 GHz equipment is less, and there is usually more of the older 2.4 Ghz GEAR around. If you are in an urban setting, surrounded by lots of houses, apartments, etc, with older 2.4 GHz gear, you may get less competition for channels if you use the 5 GHz band.

I have a router that is capable of 802.11g and 802.11n, and of auto or manual selection of band. I have a laptop which is likewise. I have a 60 Mbit/sec internet connection. Using the default factory settings on both, I could get around 12 to 20 Mbit/sec download with the laptop around 5 metres from the router. When I forced 802.11n and the 5 Ghz band, this went up to 35 Mbit/sec. When I chose Greenfield mode, I got 45 Mbit/sec.

All my devices are pretty close to each other and that new ASUS router is quite the beast and transmits pretty good range. So if I do want 5ghz on my Xbox 360, will that Wireless N Adapter for the Xbox 360 by Microsoft do the trick since I have read that the adapter supports 5ghz? And will conflict with the built in wireless adapter of the Xbox 360?

I live in the city of Chicago, so lots of houses, apts and etc then so perhaps I then should consider upgrading to 5ghz hardware?

Well its getting a bit crowded were I live with all of these 2.4ghz signals so maybe it will help in that regard. Will 5ghz help with streaming 1080p movies from my NAS to my Xbox 360?

Thanks guys for all of your responses!Ethernet is the best choice.
Wi-Fi can support about seven users in the same close area. If the other stations are some distance away, the number rises to about 20 can share the same band and the same time and get normal performance.

However, pushing bandwidth up beyond 54 Mbps is futile. Video streaming ndoes not require anywhere close to the sped.

Thanks for the good read!
You are welcome.
For the benefit of all, here is a very SHORT summary.
Yes, 5 GHz has less interference, but that will change over time. More users will move up to get rid of interference from others.
No, the big problem is not from other 802.11 devices because these devices are 'polite' to each other. So interference from you neighbors WI-FI is less likely.
Bluetooth devices and cordless phones are more often the cause of local interference.
The frequency hoping protocol is of little value when the noise is from a bad florescent lamp. Even if the lamp looks good, it may generate a lot of noise in large parts of the spectrum.
Wireless analog devices generate horrid interference to 80211 devices. One business found an employee got a wireless camera so to see who came into his office. The signal jammed the company's Wi-Fi system.
Interference for Microwave ovens is intermittent and thus hand to identify. Just keep you microwave away from the AP and laptop. Or buy a new microwave with better shielding.

The point of the article is that moving to 5 Ghz may not even dent the problem, if there is a co-channel problem. By nature, wireless communication is not 100% RELIABLE anyway. Non- 802.11 emissions are often the real issue.

Solve : Router changed, wireless printing through the network lost?

Answer»

I have an HP deskjet printer hardwired to Dell desktop running Windows XP which in turn is connected to a router with wireless capability that is connected to my ISP via a fiberoptic cable. Six months ago I got a Dell Inspiron notebook, which I connected to the wireless network. For 5 months I had full web access and could PRINT wirelessly to the HP. Then a month ago we kept losing the internet. Turned out to be a battery issue in the ISP hardware. They made the repair and swapped out the old router for a new one just to be safe. A week later, I configured the laptop for the new network and got on the internet, but I can no longer print. The laptop says it can't find any printers on the network. No setting were changed on the laptop, except the ID of the router, so there clearly has to be a PROBLEM with the desktop computer, but it prints fine, and the computer's printer settings are set for the printer to be shared. What am i missing?Just to make sure, this is your configuration:

* HP Printer
| U S B cable
* Desktop PC running Windows XP
| ETHERNET
* Router
| Wireless
* Laptop Running Windows XP

My guess is: because you changed the network interface, Windows turned off Printer Sharing. Go to Start -> Printers, and see if the printer is shared by right clicking it and choose "Sharing".

If it is shared, then make sure that both computers are in the same work group. I bet there's a guide around here that covers this, but quickly: On both computers you need to: In the start menu, right click "my computer" and choose "properties" Then click "computer name". Make sure both computers are in the same work group.

That should be all you need to make sure the laptop can see the printer. If it doesn't work, we'll have to do more trouble shooting.

RaydudeRayDude,

That's the configuration. Printer sharing was, and still is, on, and both computers are in the same workgroup. I've also tried adding a printer from the laptop, and all I get when I run the Wizard in the printer list is "microsoft windows network", and when I click on that, nothing happens.Quote from: kealii21 on August 25, 2008, 07:31:44 PM

RayDude,

That's the configuration. Printer sharing was, and still is, on, and both computers are in the same workgroup. I've also tried adding a printer from the laptop, and all I get when I run the Wizard in the printer list is "microsoft windows network", and when I click on that, nothing happens.

Okay, then you have to specify the path to the computer in the second radio button box. So open the printers panel, click add printer, select network printer, then select the second radio button and fill in the name of the computer and the printer in this format:

Code: [Select]\\computer\printer
You can find the name of the computer by going to the computer name page of the computer properties dialog box (where you set the workgroup) and the printer share name is set in the share dialog box within the printers control panel window.

If you still can't map the printer, you'll have to get more basic...

Click Start, click "run", type "cmd" and press enter (no quotes).

A command window will open, activate the window by clicking on it and then in the window type ipconfig.

Do that on both the laptop and the desktop system.

You'll likely see many network devices but only one should have ip addresses for each computer. The wireless for the laptop and the ethernet port for the desktop.

Then in the command window for the desktop, type "ping " (space afterward) and the ip address of the laptop.

Likewise ping the desktop from the laptop. If either of those fails, there's a weird problem with the router.

The only other THING I can think that's happening is the router is assigning different subnets to the wireless and desktop and then not routing packets between them. Or possibly the router is blocking these kinds of packets from traveling between the networks.

Different subnets would look like this:

192.168.0.10 <- laptop
192.168.1.10 <- desktop

This won't work if the router doesn't act as a bridge. I've never seen a wireless router do this so I strongly doubt it, but it's the idea that came to mind.

Perhaps you could log into the wireless router and see how its configured... That's getting a bit more detailed yet, so let me know how this bit goes and we'll go from here.

RaydudeThe ping is the problem. The desktop will ping the laptop, but the laptop will not ping the desktop. It times out when it tries.
The ip addresses are basically the same except for the last digit. The desk top ends in .1.2 and the laptop in .1.3.
So, how do I log into the wireless router, if that is the next STEP, or should I just call my ISP and ask them to walk me through the process of reconfiguring the router to allow my laptop to access the printer since the problem seems to be their router, not my computers or my printer?
Thanks again.Looks like they are blocking packets at the router.

Generally, the ip address of the router will be something like 192.168.1.1

So in firefox (on your desktop) type http://192.168.0.1 in the address bar and press enter.

That should get you into the router setup menu.

You might be able to figure out where the packet limitation is by searching the menus, but since its the ISP's router you might as well call them and have them walk you through it.

Let us know how it goes.

RaydudeMine is 192.168.2.1.

Just my 2 cents worth.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on August 26, 2008, 08:18:25 AM

Solve : Download Speed???

Answer»

I've no idea how you can find out? contact your provider? I just found this in my providers small print...

Quote

Will I really get 24 megs?

The actual bandwidth that you will receive is based on the following factors: the length of the wire that connects your premises with the BT exchange, the quality of the copper, and environmental issues which include electrical interference and even sometimes bad weather and the distance you LIVE from the exchange. If your line is two kilometres long then you can expect to receive up to 15 megs (dependent on the above circumstances). Your bandwidth will decrease further as line length increases, and we do not offer our service if you are further than 5.5 kilometres from the exchange. While bandwidths are not guaranteed, we do offer the highest bandwidth available using ADSL2+ to your premises. Be pro members will receive a download speed of up to 22 megs, but an upload speed of up to 2.5 megs. Be value members will receive a maximum speed of 8 megs, and a maximum upload speed of 1.3 meg.

I have a 1 mg/s cable modem hooked up to a 54 mg/s router. If i run an online speed test (i.e. http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ ) It says my best download capability is over 900 kb/s WHICH MAKES SENSE, BUT when I actually download a FILE, the highest bit rate i've ever gotten is 128 kb/s....why

Generally, I think downloads are not a very good indicator of your connection speed. I suspect the speed of download from many sites is determined by their server, not your connection speed.

Just run a speed test periodically. If the results from one time to another are fairly consistent and are about what you should expect from your service, then you probably have nothing to be concerned about.

Here's another test site, in case you want to compare results: http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest907 kb/s download speed on the flash 8 plugin........117 kb/s upload speed ....163ms latencyQuote
163ms latency
This is pretty poor. Good latency shouldn't exceed 50ms.

Download, and install TCP Optimizer: http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php
Open it, and put a checkmark in Optimal Settings. Click Apply changes button.
Restart computer, and see if it helped.will try that and post results...same speeds, but im now getting a 39ms latency to the next town. still over 130 to California. (im in NEW Jersey)Quote
but im now getting a 39ms latency to the next town. still over 130 to California
It looks fine.
Now, about downloading sample file in question.
As said before, download speed depends mostly on how busy server is.
Your advertised speed is 1Mbps, and you were downloading with 128kbps (13%).
My tweaked speed is about 15Mbps on average, but when I was downloading your file, it was reading 900kbps (6%), so actually your speed was even better. Obviously, we tried that download at different times of the day, which would explain the difference.

Solve : Sony Vaio Laptop does not like my D-Link DIR-628 router?

Answer»

I recently picked up a new to me Sony Vaio VPCEG37-FM laptop. Had constant wireless connectivity issues. It would just stop responding, I would shut off the wireless antenna then re-start, then it would start back up. It runs fine while hard wired to my router with an ethernet cable. Re-installed drivers. No help. So on a whim, I let my daughter take it to her place, she connected it to her wireless router (don't know the brand of router, just what came with her cable TV package). It runs like a champ. She used it for week with no issues at all, HULU, Netflix, internet browsing did not make it blink.

Is there something I am going to have to manually configure in my router to get this to work? This is the only laptop or any device for that matter, phones, Nook, PS3, Vizio TV, etc that has been in my house that does not like my router.

ThanksYou don't mention your operating system so this link may or may not be applicable.

By the way you ACTUALLY have a much bigger problem and that is your taste in trucks
truenorthSorry about that. Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.then the link and process might help.truenorthI couldnt access the wifi driver from the link directly, but pasted the version number to Google, installed the driver, didnt help anything.

My router is a dual band, I didnt actually mention that in my post, just gave the D-Link model number. As mentioned, the wifi connection works fine at my daughters house through her router that came with her cable tv package.

I hate to trash my router.
To another member on our forum faced with a similar problem and also had tried a multitude of actions and had no success. I have suggested that they borrow a working USB dongle wi=fi dongle unit (along with the software) and use that on the laptop to see if any improvement occurs. You also might want to try that. If it works then obtain one yourself. They usually are not expensive. Most people using a desktop on wireless have that device.truenorthHave you tried using the 2.4 ghz band on the router settings instead of 5 ghz? Wouldn't be the 1st D-Link router to have crappy firmware. My DIR-632 would lose WiFi all the time until I reflashed it with DD-WRT. Unfortunately, the DIR-628 is not compatible with DD-WRT because it's Ubicom IP5100 CPU is not supported.
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Known_incompatible_devices

If you decide to replace the router, make sure it's compatible with DD-WRT, just in case.Don't FORGET (if you can ) to try my suggestion re an external dongle. I believe your issue is a compatibility issue between your INTERNAL wi-fi chip and that particular router. So an alternative software driven send/receiver may not be similarly affected. Probably a lot less expensive than replacing the router (if your ISP even permits it) will be. truenorthI finally got into my router.

It was set on 2.4GHz
802.11 Mode.....Mixed 802.11n...802.11g...802.11b
Channel width 20MHz

I don't have access to borrow a USB antenna. But I think that will be my next avenue to travel. Crummy wifi connectivity makes it pretty much worthless. It runs fine wirelessly connected to a router at my daughters. As I said, this is the only device that has not wanted to work with this router, multiple phones are synced to it, PS3, TV, family members laptop's. Its all good but this stupid Sony laptop.

Sorry for the late follow up, just got pretty down on the laptop, and just looked at it as I walked by, usually followed by some expletives.

Any way I picked up a TRENDnet RB-TEW-649UB Mini Wireless N Adapter IEEE 802.11b/g/n USB 2.0 Up to 300Mbps Wireless Data Rates WPA2 from Newegg, had it set up in minutes. And glad to say it runs fine now. The little antenna is not too intrusive. But going to have to deal with it. In my home ANYWAY.

This should not have been this aggravating. Sony's customer support isn't much to brag about either.

I thank everyone, for all the suggestions here.I just got the TRENDnet TEW-648UB WiFi-N adapter for use on desktop & others. Everything from TrendNet works.
Yours could be faster with the right router.
648 is 150Mbps, 649 is 300Mbps
Windows will show the connection speed to the router, not to the internet.Still running well, first time we have actually got to really use the computer since I buying it.

I have taken 1 stab at upgrading the firmware ( took it from 1-10 to 1-13, newest is 1-25 ) on my D-Link router, there are many updates, does a person load them a little at a time, or jump right to the last one?

Solve : I want to network 3 computers?

Answer»

I have three computers, well me and two friends. We want to connect the tree of them in a local network, that is through a router. The computers all have different OS's: Win 2000, Win XP and Win Vista. Do we need the operating sytem disks if we want to network all three of them together? I know that the Win2000 OS disk isnt available, do I need to go and get one?

We want the network to be wireless, so how can it be done? Help please.First all 3 systems will need wireles adapters. Second you will need to chose a wide open wireless network or secured network. * When first setting up its best to be wide open to pin POINT trouble spots. Third you will need to set permissions on the systems to see each other. The Windows Xp and Vista machines have firewalls that will need to be configured. The 2000 system may have a 3RD party firewall.

Easiest (but dangerous) SETUP is insecured wireless network and firewall shut off.

Once you have everything talking, then you can turn on security features one by one to lock it down, and test after each implementation of security to make sure that each security change worked correctly.

Hardest ( most secure method ) start off with a secured wireless network and have to match the systems security to the security of your wireless network. If you havent done this before you may get frustrated if there is a problem and you are not sure of the problem is the system or the secured wireless router. You also will have to set an exeption in the firewalls of the Vista and XP systems to allow traffic from neighboring computers by name or by IP if you want to create file shares.

I always set up the hardest method only because I dont want my network ever operating insecured.

If you are doing a lan party you will need to know the port numbers that the games communicate on, or you can select the game from the drop down in the firewall possibly to allow communications. Most programs will request and the firewall will ask if you want to allow or block comunications. Then if a Lan party that is also internet based, you may also have to set up port forwarding in your router to allow specific IP addresses to allow passage of specific port numbers, however many internet based games run fine without the need of editing to allow for forwarding of otherwise BLOCKED ports.

Please report back with any other questions you may have and we will all help the best that we can.See, I have two Win XP computers wirelessly networked at home, and I have set them up with WEP security. I did need to use the win XP disk to install the network settings from one computer to the other. So I was wondering if I would need a disk for the settings transfer from the XP to the 2000 to the Vista.

I am going to install network cards on the computers that dont have them, and about the share settings, I know on XP and Vista, you just right click on the required folders and set the network share on. Im not sure if it works the same on 2000.

So the questions is: do I need the operating system disks of each computer handy?Quote from: DaveLembke on August 27, 2008, 12:08:29 PM

The Windows Xp and Vista machines have firewalls that will need to be configured. The 2000 system may have a 3rd party firewall.

Easiest (but dangerous) setup is insecured wireless network and firewall shut off.

I have one XP computer and one Vista computer networked and I don't recall having to make any changes in firewall settings.

If were going to turn off firewalls, I think I'd want to turn off my DSL modem. Too risky to be exposed to the Internet without firewall protection.

How WOULD I go about configuring a remote desktop connection to their laptop from mine over the INTERNET......,but make it so they don't get logged off when I connect, so they can SEE how i do something. I don't have their router's IP address at the moment, but I will find it out. I have their router password. Solve : Moving computer into room without phone jack?

Answer»

I'm moving the computer into another room, one without a phone jack. It will be about 40 feet away from the jack. Can I expect degradation of the signal? If so are there any special cords I can use? I assume keeping the modem in the room it is in would be the best thing. I don't really want to use a wireless router; I've bought several in the past and they were all a bust. Just buy an Ethernet cord long enough to accommodate your needs. However far away the computer will be from the modem buy a cord about 10-15 foot longer. Run the Ethernet cord from the back of your modem (Yellow port that says Ethernet) and run it however you can in order to keep it out of the way. (Over door ways, etc) You can buy wire clips that you nail over the cord to the wall.

And to answer your question about signal, No. It won't bother it whatsoever. Hope this helped (:Assuming your using DSL Highspeed through telephone line, via DSL Modem.

Wireless ROUTERS are very simple to set up and pretty rugged. Kind of curious was to why they were all bust? I have used Netgear, D-Link, Linksys, and a few other COMMON name brands and never had any issues. I also know people who are not very computer savy who have been able to set them up and get them to work without issues in which I usually help them to secure them with different password, and enable the wireless security settings for them so that neighbors or wardrivers dont hop onto their internet connection. The only router I have ever had issues with was a Belkin piece of junk that someone bought at wal-mart and it kept going out to lunch requiring reboots to work again for a random period of time and then DROP out again. I pointed them to the D-Link that wal-mart had and this has been running for 2 years now without any issues.

The only catch to setting up some DSL connections are that the authorization credentials have to be configured into the router to connect to the internet. If your computer has software that your ISP gave you for establishing your DSL connection and you have to logon using this software then you will have to set the router up to connect to your DSL provider. Not very hard to do, but more involved than Cable Broadband which does not need router setting to handshake with credentials with ISP. Once the router is set up to authenticate the software to authenticate on the computer is usually no longer necessary because the internet connection is already authorized through the router so all devices are sharing the internet connection that is already authorized. Also most ISP's have TECH support to assist you with getting a router to work, as well as offer modem/router combination hardware to allow you to have wifi, sometimes as part of your existing monthly fee, but othertimes they offer the wireless hardware and support for $3 to $5 a month to lease the hardware if you dont want to buy your own hardware. You could ALWAYS use a pair of wireless routers (one transmitting WiFi, one acting as a ethernet bridge.) You just have to find a pair of routers that supports this. I haven't noticed much degradation, but then again my Internet connection is awful to begin with.

Solve : Laptop stopped detecting wireless router.?

Answer»

My Dell Inspiron was connecting fine to my router and out of the BLUE, my wireless network went dead. My desktop which is hardwired to the router works fine. But the laptop can't even detect the router. Laptop is running Windows XP Home Edition. The only thing I haven't done is do a COMPLETE reset of my router. I have a D-Link router WBR-1310 and all this has given me is trouble since I got it a year ago. One thing I did notice is that another D-Link router popped up in my area and it's open. Could there be interference? I know my laptop adapter is working fine because I test it with this open line. Any other suggestions before resetting and starting from scratch?
your router might not be broadcasting a signal... could you connect to the router from your hardwired PC (usually at the IP 192.168.1.254) and see what the settings are?

FBHere is the network and wireless settings. Don't know if they belong to my router since it didn't ask me to log on.

As I am looking through these settings, I am realizing these settings belong to the other router somebody just SET up in my neihborhood. At least the SSID name and Security mode belong to the other router and my computer is picking up these router when I boot it up. Could these be possible that my settings are being overwritten and shutting signal to my router?

LaloCan you open MS Paint on your computer, crop that image you posted, and use the cropped image to replace the one you posted in the forum? All the useless white space to to the right side of it is forcing a lot of viewers to horizontally scroll to read the posts. As far as i'm aware (i'm not expert on this subject) but what your suggesting is basically impossible. Otherwise every house on a street would have to have a different router. Anyways are those pictures from your router? if not could you check (as in check that it isn't checked) the option highlighted in the attached photo.

FB

[recovering disk space -- attachment deleted by admin]Detecting wireless signals of neighbors is not at all uncommon. Right now, my notebook PC detects four other networks besides mine. One of them has a strong signal and is unsecured. If I choose, I can connect to the Internet via their wireless router.

The only thing I haven't done is do a complete reset of my router.
What have you done? Do you know for sure that you have, indeed, during the time you've owned that router, connected wirelessly to the Internet with it?

The only thing I've done is disconnect all wires and power off. I've yet to reset the router and start from scratch.

Soybean,
Yes, I've been connecting to this router ever since I've got it because it's always connect it to my SSID. It may be coincidential, but I hadn't had any problems up until this new open line router showed up. BTW, I did do the cropping and still gave me extra white space. I also tried using the posting for forums and now it's too small for viewing. What gives.

Fireballs,
I've tend to suspect they're not my router settings since it's got a different SSID than what I named my router. I need to figure out how to GO the homepage and login as with my username and password to view my settings. D-Link is not very user friendly in logging into my settings. You didn't crop your image, you just downsized the whole thing. The purpose of cropping is to cut away the unwanted part so that you end up with:

When you're online with your computer, you see an icon of two monitors in the LOWER right corner of your screen. Right? If you double click on that, what pops up?

Solve : Loss of wireless connection during download?

I'm using my university's wireless network. The connection is extremely volatile, going from 54mbps to 1mbps speeds randomly, even when I stay in one spot.

When I start a large FILE download, the speeds will continue to fluctuate WILDLY and usually after about 5-10 minutes, the connection will break (and instantly reset) and the download will fail.

I'm currently running XP and using the microsoft wireless client to connect. I was using Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG and updated the software and drivers, but that didn't fix the problem.

I don't have access to the router because it's the university connection. And I was able to download without trouble until just recently. ANYONE have any suggestions?Your friends' are having same problems?None that I know of.Quote from: Regal on September 03, 2008, 12:39:25 AM

Since your other PC works fine with your router, and your WiFi card has problems even with DHCP enabled, it may possibly be a hardware ISSUE. Does your laptop work fine with other access points, like in Starbucks?

If the problem turns out to be with your WiFi card, then you can either replace it, which will involve voiding your warranty, or you can get an add-on Expresscard WiFi module: http://www.expresscard.org/web/site/cons_wtb.jsp#wila or you can get a USB WiFi card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833328012 Of COURSE, we will focus on fixing your internal card first.I followed the above

Solve : Strange On/Off Internet Problems with Laptops but not PC?

Answer»

I have Verizon DSL and I did the speed test and I'm supposed to be getting ~700Kps (though I doubt it because of some of the loading time) and this super weird thing keeps happening to me. I normally live in an apartment near my school and there my internet works FINE (my laptop). When I come here to my mom's apartment and I unplug the ethernet and plug it into my computer it either works or it doesn't. Sometimes it works well, other times it says "Limited or no connectivity." It also sometimes says things about not being able to renew or establish an IP when I click "for more information".

It seems to be PRETTY random. Yesterday I used the laptop's internet in the morning for a few hours and it worked fine. Later I used it again around midnight and it wouldn't let me connect. I tested it by putting back onto the PC and the internet worked just fine with it.

Maybe it has something to do with the type of DSL? I know in the old days it'd ask me for a username (on the PC) but that white login box doesn't seem to work (all kinds of error messages which I've ignored for years) now and the internet works fine though I don't log in.

My friends have had similar problems when they brought their laptops here. I've also tried resetting, unplugging and even air cleaning the modem. Nada.

My mom's super old computer is a COMPAQ. I believe it has 256Mb RAM, about 30 Gigs hard drive... it used to have Windows 98 (I think) but we upgraded it years ago to XP. I use IE here becuase the computer is too slow and old for Mozilla.

My computer is a Toshiba Satellite with 2Gb RAM, and about 80 Gb harddrive. I have Windows XP (too lazy to upgrade to Vista though I have the cd). I usually use Firefox with this computer though I also tried IE.

Thanks for your help

What happened to my account here, it seems like it was deleted so I had to make a new one . Oh well. Can you try another internet cable? Maybe the one you're using is damaged.

Also, have you tried resetting the Router and Modem? (unplug them both for 30 seconds)First off. Don't upgrade to Vista. Old computers and Vista don't mix well. Windows XP is much more stable. Use it until you have no choice.

Second: I'm confused. You mention Verizon DSL but then mention that it doesn't work when you got to your Mom's apartment. What ISP does she have?

When you plug in the ethernet port, do this:

Click Start, Run and type "cmd"
Press enter.
In the command window that opens, type ipconfig and press enter.

Does the IP address of the ethernet controller start with "169."? If so, then DHCP didn't work. It would be particularly good to compare when it works to when it doesn't.

You could also open up the control panel and click on the network icon and view network connections. Make sure that the ethernet port isn't disabled for some reason.

I have this feeling that you are picking up someone else's local wireless connection which is just on the cusp of being able to work, so sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

As a more simple test, you could reset your Mom's modem after you move the cable from her PC to your laptop.

Also make sure she doesn't have a special software running on her machine provided by her ISP. If she does you'll probably have to install it on yours as well.

Lastly, its possible her connection requires a password and PPP to work. You need to check her internet connection properties to see how its configured and configure your laptop the same way.

Just some ideas. Good luck,

RaydudeNo I'm not jacking wireless. Sorry for the late reply btw. I live in an apartment near UCLA where I use wireless and sometimes ethernet when I'm downloading stuff. I believe we are using Time Warner internet here as we get cable.

On weekends I go home to my mom's apartment. She has an old computer hooked up to Verizon DSL by an ethernet cord. She has no wireless router. I just unplug the ethernet cord from her computer and plug it into my laptop (I don't use her computer as it takes forever to load webpages and what-not and it always crashes so I always use my school laptop). It turns on and off on my computer/laptop (says limited or no connectivity) or sometimes it works. However when it doesn't work on my laptop, when I plug it back into my mom's old Compaq pc, the internet works just fine.

My mom's pc has the weird Verizon login that doesn't work. (I'd install it but I don't have the CD... we got it years ago and my mom throws everything away... she even threw away my Microsoft Office!!) I'd think it'd be the login thing too but now it doesn't work and never ASKS me to login when I use her computer. I'll try the cmd thing next weekend when I go back.

Sorry, hope that clears things up.

(And yeah I didn't upgrade haha. I'm waiting till a lot of stuff gets compatible.)

And yeah I did reset the modem. Many many times. Doesn't seem to do much. It seems like I just get lucky (I'll leave for a few hours and then it'll miraculously work.).Verizon DSL. I suggest you do a bit of research on Verizon's web site and figure out what their instructions are for installing. If her system works and doesn't ask for a password that may just be because it remembers.

My guess is there is a password and you just need to reset it. You can do that by calling Verizon and giving the account info. It would help to have your Mom around when you CALL. Then you have to reenter it on her machine and then setup your machine according to the web instructions.

As slow as her computer sounds you may want to consider installing an antivirus program (assuming she doesn't have one if she does, make sure you have the latest updates) and do a scan.

If she doesn't have one you can get one for free from http://free.grisoft.com (there are many menus, keep clicking "free" untill you download it).

Solve : Problems with a LAN card?

Answer»

Hello!

We have a HP ProLiant ML370 G3 server that is configured to be a DHCP server, AD, DNS server and a file server. It has WINDOWS 2003 server OS. And our network has 200+ computers.

Our problem is that it has a built in gigabit card yet it only reads 100Mbps when it is online. We tried updating its driver but still it's still at 100Mbps. Last one we did was to install a gigabit ethernet card there and after installing it runs at 1.0 GBPS. The next morning when we checked it, it register again a 100Mbps. Can anybody help us? Can somebody give us an idea? We tried to GOOGLE it but we haven't found a similar problem like we have.

Thanks in advance! Its only going to run as fast as your switch. To get the gigabit speed you will need a CAT 6 CABLE and a gigabit switch.

Yeah. We have those on our network.

My eBay, yahoo, and my college mymathlab accounts WORKED about a WEEK ago before my dad did something to our network. Now when i try to log in to yahoo it constantly refreshes the page, my eBay account recognizes my saved password but when i log in it refreshes the page and asks me to enter my password again, and mymathlab SAYS there is a timeout ERROR. Any idea of what he did and how do i fix it? also I can log in at school but not at home.
