Solve : wi-fi connection?

Answer»

I have an Averatec laptop running windows xp professional sp3. It picked up wi-fi and loaded internet until recently. It still detects wi-fi signal yet won't log on to the internet. I've tried plugging directly into the network with the same result. When I try to REPAIR the connection it sends an error message that tcp/ip is not ENABLED. I went to properties and it shows that tcp/ip is marked. Please advise. THANK you.Let us try the simple things 1st.
1. Unplug the power to the router/modem for a minute then plug it back in. does that give access?
2.On the ICON for the internet connection (on the task bar beside the time) right mouse click and select "repair". Let it do it's thing until complete and tell us what changed (if anything) truenorthNo change, same error message. Please read the contents of this site.

Solve : Printer connection on XP?

Answer»

How can i access a printer on a LAN from my windows xp loaded computer?Depends on how it is connected on the LAN. Is it connected directly to Cat5 or Wifi NETWORK connection or is it shared through ANOTHER computer on the LAN?

If its directly connected to the LAN you just need to know what the IP Address is of the printer and then manually install printer following this process: http://uis.georgetown.edu/software/documentation/winxp/winxp.network.printer.html

If its connected via a share from another computer you can find the shared printer on your LAN and then connect to it.

Be sure to have the drivers ready on CD, DVD, or downloaded off the internet to associate with the printer you are installing, as for using the default drivers that Windows may associate with this printer might not work or might work with strange results. I like to use the drivers from the manufacturer and perform corporate driver install vs the full package with unnecessary features and services to my needs.thanx alot indeed i got the drivers cd and it worked perfectly

Solve : IP Address Changing Without Router or Computer Restart?

Answer»

Hello, recently my global IP address (the one I can find by simply searching "IP" in google) has been changing even though I have not restarted my router or laptop. This was not occuring for the past year only in the last week or two. My ISP is Bell Canada. I do have a dynamic IP but before it would only change upon restarting my router. I'm curious as to why this is happening because to my (not very extensive knowledge), IP addresses should not change by themselves like they are currently.

I use an early 2011 Macbook Pro running OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. The IP changes seem to occur anywhere around 1 to 5 days and every time it did change I restarted my router to see if the IP would change (and it did). After the third change, I messed around with settings on my router and laptop which I have since reverted except for a DNS cache flush that I did yesterday. This morning when I checked my IP I found that it had changed from the night before.

I'm not SURE if it helps but starting from around 1-3 days ago, my ping has doubled to about 50ms but my dl and ul speeds remain more or less the same (in fact I think my DL speeds went up a little). Could this have anything to do with my ISP upgrading or moving servers and would this force my IP address to change? For the first week and a half of my IP changing itself my ping and speeds were the same as usual.

One last thing, my ping now (~50ms) is the same as it was about 7 months back when my internet speeds were fairly slow as well. After getting a bandwidth cap my speeds went up and my ping fell to ~22ms. That hasn't changed at all in the last 7 months.

Sorry for the wall of text and thanks in advance for any answers!Welcome to CH. The forum answers any reasonable question.
Some, not all, ISP companies will change the internet IP from time to time. It is often done to balance the traffic load on the ISP routers. For example, you and a number of other users may be on one of the IPs available to the COMPANY in your area. Let's say the number got up to 61 and maybe the limit for that switch is 64. At the same time another switch has 11 people on it. So then, the ISP will reset the connection and give you the IP with the lessor traffic. On other days it might not be needed. Or they will move other users instead of you.
Does that answer your question?

To CLARIFY, the OP is talking about the address on the internet, the WAN address.
I am sure he does not mean the local address on the LAN

Typically the lease on an internet address will expire in 24 hours, but this is not a hard rule. Of course web sites should have fixed IPs that stay the same. BET even they must sometimes change due to unseen issues. The DNS system takes care of this. Or it should.
hard rule.
Thanks, that clears up a lot! I'm just curious to know why this has only started occurring frequently in the past two weeks. The only other thing I'm not clear on is whether or not my WAN address can change without restarting my router or laptop connection, previously when I wanted to change my address I would restart my router as I thought that was the only way.

Nevertheless, thanks for the quick reply and I'll be sure to help other people with areas that I'm more familiar in, thank you! Each ISP is different. And they can change when needed. FYI If you are an enterprise business and always having the same address is critical, you can pay more MONEY to insure the ISP never changes it.

Also, we here are talking about IPv4. But is using IPv6 there should not be a reason to ever change. (One source says in IPv6 the lower 64 bits are static.)
Hope this is of some help.

Solve : Could not detect the wi fi network available?

Answer»

I have DELL inspiron N5010 with windows 7 (32 BIT) OS. I also have net protector installed in my laptop. I have Wi Fi available in college. Other laptops and my android phone could detect and use that network but my laptop could not even detect the wi fi range available.
Do I need to install any drivers to use Wi fi service available?
If yes, where could i get those drivers? On dells website only BLUETOOTH driver are available in networks section. i didnt find wi fi drivers there.
If drivers are not required what else shall i do to use wi fi service?Make sure WIFI is enabled. Some laptops have a FN (function) key combination to enable/disable and others have a switch located on the laptop to enable/disable. I'd look in device manager to make sure that there are no yellow warnings or red problems. I would also go into network adapter properties and make sure the wifi network adapter is enabled and not disabled.

Looking at the specs here:http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/review/brand_centre/dell/inspiron_15r_n5010/349068/specs

This laptop is: Wireless 802.11b, Wireless 802.11n, Bluetooth, Wireless 802.11g

So it should have no problems finding wifi networks unless the wifi is turned off, driver is corrupt, or wifi NIC is dead.my laptop has same function key for turning on wi fi and bluetooth. I have tried turning on that but it only turn on bluetooth not wifiQuote from: shrikanty on June 21, 2013, 11:22:59 PM

my laptop has same function key for turning on wi fi and bluetooth. I have tried turning on that but it only turn on bluetooth not wifi
There is an option in BIOS to specify what the radio ON/OFF does.
Default is 802.11 on and Bluetooth off for Dell laptops.
One my friend told me windows 7 does not require wi fi drivers. is it true? if they are required how to check whether drivers are installed or not?I'd look in device manager and make sure that the wireless adapter is happy. It will be happy if it is listed and no yellow warnings or red x's showing the device disabled by the system. If you see warnings or a red X, then you likely need to install the correct driver for the wifi or the device that is complaining if other than wifi adapter.

If the wireless adapter is happy here, then I would go to network properties and see if it is enabled. A quick way to get there would be to open command prompt by entering CMD at the Start-> Search PROGRAMS and Files window.

At the DOS Shell window type IPCONFIG/ALL and press the enter key. Then SCROLL through the information and look for wireless adapter info. If no info is listed for wireless adapter and only the regular network adapter then its disabled or driver is missing.

Here is a link to drivers for Windows 7
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/Product/inspiron-15-intel-n5010As suggested i went to device manager. 2 devices have yellow warning there. I tried to update drivers automatically. but windows failed to locate drivers. (automatic installation is enabled in device installation setting).
The link provided in last post have list of various driver for MS Windows 7 64 bit. But may OS is MS Windows 7 32 bit. Are these drivers suitable for my use?
Which drivers should I download for bluetooth peripheral device and network controller from the list of 48 drivers available at given link.
Please have look at images attached.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Problem solved. I installed Intel (R) Centrino (R) N 1000 driver.

Solve : Internet Connectivity Issue?

Answer»

I am fairly good with computers but really do not know where to start here.

I have an HP G62 Notebook, with Winodws 7 and wireless interent. Please let me know what else you need!

I have rather recently encountered the scenario that my computer will be successfully encountered to the internet and when "google.com" is pinged in CMD I do receive a reply and my Internet Explorer 64-bit WORKS but Firefox, Internet Explorer 120-bit and any downloading/uploading from programs (AVG, WINDOWS Updater) fail.

If running a virus program or Mal-Ware program nothing comes up. This scenario will play out wirelessly or wired.

Please help!Quote

Internet Explorer 120-bit
Do not use the 120 bit version with Windows 7 64 bit.
Thank you for the response, I'm not using that version, because it does not work, on top of the FACT that I prefer Firefox. I can add that not only are UPGRADES failing to download, but I also cannot use Skype.

Solve : Network / Internet Connectivity Issue on single computer?

Answer»

When I moved into my new apartment a few months back, I bought a new wireless router (Netgear N600 Wireless Extreme for Mac and PC) and a new wireless adapter for my desktop (Netgear WNDA3100). Up until recently, everything was working perfectly. I had good SIGNAL strength, a fast connection, and it always connected to my network right away on startup.

A few weeks ago, the adapter started giving me issues connecting on this one computer. I know it's not a router issue because my phone and other laptop connect flawlessly to the network every TIME with a fast connection. My desktop, though, connects only sporadically. For a long time it would not connect at all. I tried swapping the adapter to my old adapter, which still worked, but got the same results.

Lately, it will connect and show a strong signal strength in the little icon tray, but the speed is very slow. When I go into Networking in the Control Panel, it tells me my speed is only 5.1 Mbps or so, which causes downloading and streaming issues (Youtube, etc). It always used to show ~200 Mbps or so and nothing has changed in my apartment that would affect the signal. The computer is located in the same spot, as well.

I've run updated Malwarebytes and Spybot scans and there are no viruses on the computer, plus I always have Avast running. Any thoughts on what could be causing this issue? The only thing to mention about when it started having the issue is that I had shut it down for HURRICANE Irene, but I unplugged it all before the storm and didn't plug it back in again until we got power, and everything is running through a high end surge protector. What changes have you made to the system sinse it last worked properly?Quote from: Quantos on September 28, 2011, 07:33:41 PM

What changes have you made to the system sinse it last worked properly?

Honestly, nothing. I haven't installed or uninstalled any software (except when I attempted to use my old adapter after the new one started this issue). I hadn't noticed any Windows updates try to install between when it was working and when it started giving me problems, although I've installed all current Windows updates since to try to see if that would solve the problem.

Funny enough, the new adapter stopped working altogether again yesterday, so I figured I'd give the old one one more shot and surprisingly it worked normally. It's a G adapter and I was seeing normal speeds (connected at 54Mbps and Speedtest.net was showing the same fast speeds as my other computer and cell phone when connected to the internet). When I tried hooking up to the new adapter again, it still wouldn't connect, so I'm assuming there is an issue with the new adapter.

I'm not sure why the old one is working now but wasn't before. I'm not certified in any way but I deal quite a bit with computers at home and at work and wouldn't exactly consider myself a novice, but I couldn't figure this issue out. I went through all sorts of troubleshooting (everything from typical stuff such as software/driver updates and virus checks to Windows help site that included downloading different troubleshooting programs and changing various network setting on the computer).

I'm GOING to monitor the old adapter over the next few days and if it continues to work properly, I'll attempt to return the new one and replace it with a different brand/model. When I first bought this new adapter back in June, the initial one I received was DOA so I had to have it replaced (with the same model). Obviously this has made me skeptical that the issue wasn't with the adapter; it's just that when the old one also didn't work properly, that pointed me towards a Windows/software-related issue. To have useful answers starts with signal strength numbers. That means signal strength or signal to noise ratio in dBs. Your signal is probably less than -70 dBs. MAY be a paltry -80 db most of the time.

Better computer manufacturers provide a utility to read these numbers. Or try Netstumbler.com . Once you have those numbers, then first find problem. And then eliminate it. Five bars is useless for solving problems. You need something that provides dB numbers.

Did you know a microwave oven can even subvert your numbers? Any answer will only be speculation until you have a tool to discover first what you have. And then can help implement a solution.

Solve : WPA2 router security issue?

Answer»

Hey,

I have a Netgear N600 router back home. And i spent 2 hours with customer SUPPORT, because my router would not LET anyone CONNECT to it. This included iPods, iphones, laptops, etc. They all were connected fine, but the next day everything went to crap. The IT guy said I need to run WEP security instead of WPA2. Why would that be all the sudden? LIKE what would make that switch? It used to work amazingly! Now its slower and not as secure?

Solve : My computer says I am connected to the internet, but Chrome says I'm not. Help!?

Answer»

I am running an HP PAVILION Dv7 laptop with Win 8. The notification bar says I am CONNECTED to my router and has excellent SIGNAL strength. However, when I use Chrome or other applications that use the internet, they say I am not connected to the internet. Ipconfig is not recognized in the CMD. Help please!Hello. I do not have Windows 8.
However, this kind of behavior has been SEEN with other versions of windows. Did it at one time work good ant then stop? Was there anything different that could explain the problem?
Can your HP PAVILION Dv7 laptop be connected straight to the router using an ETHERNET cable? Have you tried that?
Does your wrestles router have a special way to grant grant permission to connect? Some require you to PRESS a button the first time you connect. But inn a few cases the router gets reset and you have to don it again. Does that apply?

BTW: what is the brand and model of the router.

Also, you may have to run the network setup again, in spite of the fact that it says it is connected. What have you tried?

Here is a thing about IPCONFIG for Windows 8.

Solve : Splitter??

Answer»

This may be a very simple QUESTION and answer but I wanted to check if anyone could verify this for me.

At my workplace, I have a desktop computer that is connected to the Internet by ADSL. It is wired with the typical ADSL line (which looks like a a larger / wider version of phone line). Recently, I have pulled out the line and put it into my own laptop when I wanted to do work on my own MACHINE.

Now, if I want to have both computers connected to the Internet at the same time, will a splitter do the trick? Or do I need some other piece of equipment? I only have the 1 line to work with that comes out of the wall.

Please ADVISE!I think you should contact your ISP and ask them.Quote from: hockeysticks on September 20, 2011, 08:41:32 AM

Ask your Boss or Supervisor. But the answer is NO, you will need an ethernet switch or ROUTER. Your ADSL modem may not be able to handle more than 2 computers at the same time.Check your ISP to see if they have modems with built in routers. Many do, and that would be a simple solution. This is NOT an ADSL line, this is an RJ45 CAT cable. You need a switch / hub to add more DEVICES. Ask your boss first just in case.

Solve : Belkin wifi is viewable but cannot connect?

Answer»

Last Friday, I purchased a Belkin N300 to set up wireless internet on Win Xp. At first I couldn't GET the router to connect with the modem. I spend nearly an hour on the phone with a REP who kept asking me to perform the same STEPS over and over again. I eventually found a solution myself by restoring default settings. Afterwards, I changed the password thinking I was finished, but then I noticed the connection still wasn't letting me use the wifi, I tried to follow the WAN IP instructions since I noticed a constant inconsistency with the IP address. For some strange reason, the system went haywire all over again. But this time, though it was connected, I could not use the web interface. I searched on line and tried some ideas out.

I did IPCONFIG in the command line b/c I read that the default gateway was the number that should be used as a substitute for the web interface address. I kept getting connection errors or connection refused when I tried it.

I used Wireless Wizard 5.3 software as well.
The results were pass for valid IP, Internet Connectivity, Sign in, and Wireless link quality. Mindspring aka Earthlink connectivity failed.
Originally my IP Routing & Win Proxy were disabled. But I enabled them thinking it would solve the problem. It didn't.

Despite the the browser apparently being "connected," I couldn't do anything, so I pressed the reset button for several seconds. It's back on blinking orange (not connected) but now I don't know what to do to get it connected again. The interface is still rejected in the browsers. I have repaired my connection using explorer. Tried a fix on Wireless Wizard, and unplugged it as well. Nothing works. Belkin Software is all but useless for attempting a connection.

I want to restart my connection with router, return the settings to normal so that I can use resources like the interface, and fix the signal that accepts the password but gives no wireless connectivity to devices.

Browsers (IE, Firefox, Opera) all get the same errors.
Web Interface: 192.168.2.1 address in browser
Wan Ip Instructions: http://www.belkin.com/us/support-article?rnId=502
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Version 2002, Service Pack 3
Intel Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz 3.19 GHz
504 MB of RAM
Network Adapter is Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller

Wireless Wizard and Command line rsults are attached in screenshot.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]It should t not be that hard.
Some things that are not clear.
Do you have normal service without the router?
What kind of service do you have? DSL? Cable?
Did you ask you ISP about using a router? Yes, it can make a difference.
Model of modem?
Router model?
What other things are tied to router or modem?

Did you check DHCP settings? Only one device in the network does it.

It's a cable modem from Earthlink powered by TWC. If I remove the router, everything works just fine. I asked TWC and they said all I needed was a router. The modem only had one Ethernet cable. I was told by Belkin rep to plug the router's modem outlet into the modem and plug another ethernet cable to the computer and router LAN outlets. I will ontect my ISP again about it. It took the rep who told me this 45 minutes to explain their pricing so....different people, different answers. I'll login and explain what was said.

Solve : My internet fluctuates alot?

Answer»

okay well recently i moved and just transfer my internet company alot with my cable and telephone. My internet here thought is acting weird and i just need to know if its something i could have done while moving. So at my house i would get 14 ping and 46/down 19/up and i moved only a mile so its still the same host. but my internet hereis SLOWER. When i start the test from speedtest it goes to 50 really fast then TAKES about 30 seconds and stops at 12 and same with up but to 20 then 3. and then i call and ask they say its on my end. I just wanted to know if there could be something i did to make it act like that.
my specs are
Amd athlon II x464__ 16 ram__windows 7 home premium
hmm if your broadband if fluctuating in speed you could try some simple checks like changing the micro filter, using the test socket with in the master socket of the phone socket and power cycling the ROUTER

Solve : TV can't access computer files over LAN?

Answer»

Last winter I bought a Sony Bravia KDL- 46EX710 DLNA LCD/LED TV it is connected to the internet through my Linksys WRT160Nv3 router via LAN, everything worked perfect when I stopped using it for the summer, this past week I turned it back on and tried to ACCESS my photos on my PC through the TV and it said it could not find the server, I have tried everything but to no avail. I have stopped my AVG ANTIVIRUS and Windows firewall, still can't access the files on my PC, the PC'sin the home can access each other over this router, even the internet is accessed by the TV over this router so the router and TV are connected but the TV can not access the computers over this router, I have tried a new ethernet cable and still nothing.

Router 192.168.1.1
My PC LAN 192.168.1.102
Acer PC Wireless-G 192.168.1.101
Bravia TV 192.168.1.103
DHCP server start 192.168.1.100
end 192.168.1.149
It would appear to me that something is blocking access from the TV to the computers on my network but I just can't find it.
Thanks
Brandy
I'm not sure how the TV exactly works, but a quick google search shows that you need a DLNA server on your PC running... You will need to set up a firewall EXCEPTION for the DLNA server. WMP 11 includes a DLNA server.Check your router's Upnp settings for it might be disabled. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UPnPQuote from: Transfusion on September 18, 2011, 09:56:11 PM

The TV is DLNA, where would I find DLNA on my PC? as I STATED this COMBINATION worked last winter, all I did was not use the TV this summer, and the TV does access the internet through the router, it just can't access the PC files, I have turned the Windows firewall off for now.

How to turn your PC into a DLNA server.you really have the answer, problem is with my computer, for some reason Media Player isn't working properly and when I click on Library then media sharing placing the check in "Share my media" dosen't do anything, on my wife's computer the TV immediately connected after this step. Any idea what to do?

Thanks, you are on the right track, I completely forgot about Media Player, must be old age.

I have never had any issues with WMP, but if it would be possible to do a fresh install of WMP 11, that would be nice. You can also repair your existing installation. Please make sure to back up all of your existing media.

Solve : Crashing internet connection?

Answer»

Hi!

Every day our network crash at least 2 - 5 times.

First it's there, then it's not. This has been going on for months, And I've been THINKING about some KIND off attack on our router, but since it's been going on for so long I'm not sure.

The network will not work until I unplug the router, and wait for ten seconds before I plug the router back in.

We've had the routwr for a few YRS, so it's somewhat old. What could be the problem? It's quite annoying when you just get disconected all of a sudden.

(All network indicators are glowing, but the computers only have contact via LAN.)Well the obvious first question is: have you tried a different router? Alternatively, take the router out of the picture and connect the system directly to the modem - does the problem STILL occur? If not, it's the router.Sorry for wrong use of words, English is not my native language.

Of course I meant modem and not router. the router is barely a YEAR and is working great. What's also weird is that streamin music keep on playing, even though I can't access the internet...I'd still like you to take the router out of the equation and just as a test direct connect to the modem please.I've found the problem. I was wrong. it was the router. The thing was that it's a cheap router, and it's somewhat overused by us.

Thx.

Solve : D-link dns 345 WOL??

Answer»

hey all, i was just wodering is the dlink dns 345 share CENTRE supports wake on lan. If so how would i go about setting it up on N iphone?According to this Google TRANSLATED post some do and some don't. In the image in the link, you can see above the first LAN port, it says "LAN1" and below "(WOL)". If yours does, then yes, it should support WOL (Wake On LAN). There are TONS of apps for your iPhone which can send the magic packet to wake a device, but as I've never used an Apple PRODUCT I can't recommend one myself.
Hope this helps guess my model doesnt support it thanks for the help

Solve : Dropped off network and cannot connect (unidentified network)?

Answer»

Hi all,

I've searched and searched and searched and can't find a solution, so here goes...

We use a Netcomm modem/router in our office and have all computers hardwired in (we're not using wireless, it's next to useless for some reason). Yesterday "something" happened in our office whereby all computers (5 of us) dropped off the net. I have no idea what exactly happened as I was out at the time, but on returning I just turned the router off and on and everyone got back on the net... except me.

The only thing I know that changed that day was that about an hour or two before everyone dropped off I logged into the router to set it to stop beaming wireless out. I've since reversed that but still I cannot connect.

I bring my own laptop to work (running Win 7 Pro) and just plug in an ethernet cable, and it's always worked perfectly until now. My computer can see that it's connected to a network of some type, but just labels it as "unidentified network" and also says "no INTERNET access". Interestingly, I can see other computers on the network when they're turned on (and they're PROPERLY connected to the named office network and have full net access).

So far I've tried the following:

  • All combinations of turning everything off and on - computer, router, I LEFT the router off overnight just in case the extra time fluked a solution... all no good;
  • I've tried to do the ipconfig /release and /renew but as I cannot properly connect to the network it always fails - the /release part seems to work (although I'm not 100% sure of what the results mean tbh) but the renew fails;
  • Uninstalling the network adapter and reinstalling using Windows 7 installation method, and also using the driver downloaded from Realtek;
  • All Windows updates are updated;
  • I've been into the device settings and there doesn't appear to be any IRQ conflict with other hardware that I can tell - but again this is starting to get beyond my level of tech understanding. Regardless, there were no icons to show any problems.
  • I've tried different cables also, it appears to just be my computer that won't talk to the router properly, every other computer and cable is fine;

The network card I have is a Realtek RTL8168(P)/8111(P) Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20) - I'm not sure what it all means, but that's what's in the device list.

I can access the router easily from other computers, but I don't know enough about how they work to know if that's causing the problem. Can anyone tell me why my laptop won't talk to the router correctly anymore? Any and all help very MUCH appreciated.

Thanks,
MarkIt would be great if you could go into command prompt and type ipconfig /all then post the results here. A simple disabling and enabling of your NIC may help too.Hi Transfusion, yep I've tried disable and re-enable, forgot to mention it though. Obviously it wasn't successful.

ipconfig /all is below...
I ran it with the LAN cable plugged in, but with the WLAN off. Just in case it helps, I'm still getting the "unidentified network" wording when it tries to connect, and when I view the network I can see the other few computers on it - no net access though.

Another thing I just realised, I can connect intermitantly using the WLAN, and have printed to a printer on the network. Not sure if that changes anything or not. As mentioned previously though, the WLAN is almost useless for some reason so we never use it (that's another problem for another day).

Cheers.

There is no MAC address. It could possibly be a driver error. Assign a MAC address to your computer like this:
http://www.windowsreference.com/networking/how-to-change-mac-address-in-windows-registry/
and try to reconnect. Does your computer show up as a client in your router settings page? When you connect with WiFi, does the internet work properly?Hi again - your comments on having no MAC address led me to the right place - it works!!

The link you provided actually didn't allow me to assign a MAC address, the address for the hardware oddly wasn't actually listed in the registry location so I couldn't do anything.

But, I did find this link...
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpronetworking/thread/697bf48c-a226-4315-8875-2bbeddf16db2/

The short of it is: Select Control Panel->device Manage->Network Adapter->Adv.->Network Address, put some values in the text box

I put in values 000011112222 (I think it needs 12 numbers right...) anyway, it now works fantastically!

Thanks for the help - you are a legend among legends!!

Solve : D-Link dns-345 share centre help!?

Answer»

hi all. the other day i bought a d link dns-345 share center nas server. After installing it and plugging it all up i noticed my write speed to the NAS was only 10mb/s. I was wondering if i could make this faster or if i have plaugged it up wrong and thats why its so slow im pretty avaerage when it comes to networking so im not sure where to go from here

the nas server is plugged into a wireless modem router(connected to the internet) and and then the moden router connects to my computer via enthernet cable. i was also wodering if i could make a direct connection straight from the nas to my computer(the nas has 2 enthernet ports could i use 1 for the moden and one just from transfere beetween my computer and the nas) would that speed up my transfere rates?

any help would be muchlu appriciated Found this on the hunt for info... different model but same issue... http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=11263.0

I actually had a Netgear NAS and sold mine because I wasnt impressed with the speed. I expected better performance from mine which was 10/100 which I purchased without drives and installed two 500GB SATA drives into it. I was getting better performance out of the 500GB drives attached via USB 2.0, so I sold the NAS without the drives and used them externally through USB.

Had I had a need for multiple users to access it I THINK I would have just added a 500GB drive to a system that is always on and add a share which would have been better. I bought mine because I thought it was cool and fast, it ended up being uncool and slow.do you tin my speeds wold go up if plug the lan 1 and lan 2 ports from the NAS into the hub (23 and 24 ports are combo 1000mb/s ports). then could i plug another enthernet cable going from the hub to my router and then one last enthernet cable to go from the hub directly to my pc. sorry for the bad explanation lol

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]might look somthing like this when its done

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]I'd connect the CAT5 cable, just to test the uplink speed to the 24port switch from the NAS you have there and see if it uplinks as 10 or uplinks as 100 and reply back. Plug LAN1 on the NAS to port 1 on the switch with nothing ELSE attached to the switch... we just want to see what it uplinks as?

I think that model might show yellow for 10 and green for 100i connected the LAN1 on the nas to port 24 on the hub( the LED's show a orange and green light for port 24). When i connect port 1 to my computer the led"s for port one both light up green(still only transferring at 10mb/s... is that what you wanter to knowIs it just me or am i the only person who thinks its ridiculous to sell something that holds potentially 12TB's of data has both movie's and music streaming inbuilt but only transfers data at 10mb/s? just saying lolQuote

am i the only person who thinks its ridiculous to sell something that holds potentially 12TB's of data has both movie's and music streaming inbuilt but only transfers data at 10mb/s?

Something needs fixing here. Any home type consumer-grade NAS should be capable of a lot more than 10 MB/s over a wired connection when set up properly. My cheap Seagate GoFlex Home (with a 2TB disk!) which cost half the price of a bare no-disks DNS-345 can do 40+ MB/s read and write. I have seen a speed test of the DNS-345 which GAVE results of 79 Mb/s read and 49 MB/s write with a 4 disk RAID-5 setup. Oddly, many reviews say it is slower with a RAID setup than without. My advice is first browse D-Link's forum and read through posts about DNS-345 speed issues, and if you don't get find any tips that work, enrol in the forum and start a thread, posting FULL details of all your hardware and SOFTWARE (router, computer type and OS, computer(s), network adapter, disks installed in NAS, etc) and be prepared to supply more details if requested. It may be that you have a faulty unit, but equally, it may just need setting up properly.

* Such as D-Link's own forum, where one thread is started by someone complaining that his DNS-345 can "only" write at 35 MB/s...

Solve : make laptop to hotspot?

Answer»

hi
want to know how to make my laptop a hotspot so i could connect wireless with my android PHONE. i know how to make Ad Hoc, but android phone can't find it just other laptops. i am using xp and internet cable is connected to my laptop. http://www.brighthub.com/computing/windows-platform/articles/7785.aspx
I do this frequently when travelling on a Sony Vaio W NETBOOK with a 3G connection. I have noticed it is not as reliable as a dedicated WiFi router-for one thing the Max download speed drops by almost half on the clients. WiFi connection occasionally drops. However, this should suffice for a temporary solution.

If you manually type in the SSID of the Ad-Hoc network on your phone, does it connect?the link is how to make ad hoc. my android phone doesn't find it, only other computers can find it.
if you enter it still nothing hapening, even if i do share info nothing happens. Oops, sorry for the ignorance. A quick google search TURNS up the fact that Android doesn't display ad-hoc networks.
http://szym.net/2010/12/adhoc-wifi-in-android/
This may be a good workaround. If you're on Windows 7, try Connectify.

Alternatively you may be able to use Intel MyWifi depending on the BRAND of the networking controllerr in your laptop. Most HP laptops have this pre-installed.i guess rooting is the only optionQuote from: kpac on October 04, 2011, 12:14:08 PM

I've recently used connectify to connect my HTC desire to my laptop for remote control whilst out of wireless range of the router. It will do what you need.Good find, kpac and Bevlar. A nice GUI for Internet connection sharing. However, I have seen reviews that criticize Connectify for installing drivers which cause instability... will have to try it first-hand to find out.i'm using xp, tried connectify but it just creates adhoc and phone doesn't find it. my network card is atheros, laptop asus. any other suggestions?

Solve : Cant connect to internet on newly built desktop PC, using 2701HG-B modem (Help!)?

Answer»

Title says most of it, so yeah I built this desktop computer yesterday and EVER since I couldnt connect to the internet. Im getting very frustrated with it and pretty sad, because maybe I did something wrong?? Idk well heres some information if NEEDED.

Basicly I cant find the connection, I have a ethernet cable already connected to the computer.

Picture of device MANAGER

My modem is a 2Wire 2701HG-B Gateway

If by any chance it is my computer parts which I highly doubt heres a list of it
http://pcpartpicker.com/user/namethewar/saved

-if any more information is needed please tell me. Im trying to solve this problem as fast as I can, so I can enjoy my pc.Have you installed the drivers for this ethernet adapter that came with the motherboard? It looks like your missing Ethernet and USB Controller drivers which should be located on the CD or DVD that came with the motherboard.

Then the CAT5 network cable connects between the single-ethernet port of motherboard to any of the 4 available RJ45 Cat5 ports on the back of the router. I used this link to see what your router looks like. http://www.ebay.com/itm/AT-T-2701HG-B-4-Port-10-100-Wireless-G-Router-Gateway-DSL-2Wire-Modem-Switch-/161040434268#ht_66wt_1170

When the Integrated NIC is working properly with PROPER driver it should display Network Adapter from list in Device Manager just like my pic attached of this Win7 system I am on now.

Solve : Improving Wi-Fi Connection?

Answer»

I've got a 802.11g router and I'm looking to decrease latency and packet loss. I especially notice this when I play online games during peak hours (ie. After 5PM right until 12pm since it's a student area).

I tested my connection with an ethernet cable and it works just fine, so I don't think it's as much of an ISP issue as it is just a wireless router issue.

From what I've been able to research, it would appear that as long as all the devices I'm using are 802.11g compatible, I should switch to the g only mode of my router in the settings, which I have done. Additionally, I should also choose a wireless channel with the fewest number of people broadcasting on it.

It appears that 1, 6, and 11 are the most popular choices since those dedicated channels for wireless connections and have the least interference with the other channels.

Using a program I managed to find called inSSIDer, I found that:

10-15 other devices are broadcasting on channel 1
4-5 on channel 2
3 on channel 3
2 on channel 4
1 on channel 5
7 on channel 6
0 on channel 7
1 on channel 8
0 on channel 9
3 on channel 10
10-12 on channel 11

So I changed from channel 1 and switched it to 6 given what I've been able to read up on. I also noticed that inSSIDer reported some of the channels as x+y LIKE 6 +2 or 11 +7; what does this mean?

I appreciate any insight into this qualm of mine and would like to know if what I've said so far is accurate, if channel 6 is the best option (what about the channels with no broadcasters?), and if there are any other settings, tweaks, and adjustments I should make to maximize my wireless performance. I would also like to learn a little more about wireless networking so I am open to particularly wordy RESPONSES

ThanksWifi broadcast on one channel has a certain "spread" to the neighbouring channels. Interference decreases the further apart (in terms of channels) two signals are. I don't know what inSSIDer's "+2" means alas - strength of COMPETITION on that channel? Width of signal spread? I guess RTFM.

In the meantime, I wouldn't want to reinvent the wheel here. Here are a couple of decent articles on improving your chances with wifi reception:

http://www.wikihow.com/Improve-WiFi-Reception
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/setup/wirelesstips.aspx

For something a bit deeper, read this:

http://www.connect802.com/antennas.htm

Personally, the first THING I do with a wifi router (after ensuring optimum placement) is replace the standard 2/3dBi antennae with 9dBi antennae. It does make a difference (although don't be fooled into thinking your reception will be three times better) and it's a pretty cheap upgrade for routers that have external antennae.Rob Pomeroy,
Excellent post. I gave you a thank you. Maybe the OP will too. Thanks, Geek. Very kind. Thanks for the insight and links. I've learned a few things here and there and I think my connection is slightly better after some router rearrangement. I'll have to investigate new antennae at a later point.

Solve : Opening a port?

Answer»

Hello
I am currently trying to open a port on my modem. I know that this topic has already been posted. I read a lot of THINGS to solve my problem, but I am still not able to open a port

To be more precise, I want to open the port #25565 for Minecraft. I tried to open it manually, with Simple Port Forwarding, Port Mapper and maybe with some other software... Also, I downloaded PF Port Checker and it said that 25565 was open. BUT when I try to login on my server, Minecraft says "Connection refused: connect". So I feel very confused

My modem is a TP-Link TD-W8960N

Thank you in advance

P.-S.: Sorry for my bad EnglishIf its not being blocked by local firewall of the system acting as the Minecraft Server then it might be being blocked by ISP ... I have had to use ports that are not the normally used ports for hosting web services like Apache Server for hosting web sites, video games, and ventrillo etc.

I would contact your ISP and check with them to see if it is a blocked port, or simply be quiet about it and use a port that my ISP doesnt block such as port 8077 and tell friends to connect via that port. You would then need to perform the same port forwarding etc. Thanks for your advice.
I tried with port 8077, but it didn't work. I can't log in my server EVEN if I put "localhost" as the IP. It says always same error message. So, as you said, I will contact my ISP to get some info on blocked ports.

I forgot to write some additional info in my first post:
Currently, I'm using Hamachi. It's my only way to play in multiplayer. Also I setted a static local IP adress for my computer and my ISP is TekSavvy.
When I try to log on my server, the console detect that somebody tried to log.
I created a no-ip adress and when I log in with this adress, the same error message shows.there are many a help and tuorials and videos how to use hamachi for a MNE craft serverQuote from: blackrainbow on June 16, 2013, 09:29:56 AM

there are many a help and tuorials and videos how to use hamachi for a mne craft server

Thanks but I know how to use Hamachi. My goal is to do not use Hamachi anymore and use my real IP
I contacted my ISP and they said that they don't block any port, exept the 25.

I really don't know what's wrong... Just saw that your having issues with localhost aka 127.0.0.1 so it has to be a configuration issue or malfunction. If it were the case that you could connect through localhost or 127.0.0.1 but everyone else outside of the local computer couldnt connect to you then you would be DEALING with a firewall issue, wrong port forward config, or ISP blocking port.

Sorry for assuming that you were able to connect to localhost earlier, I assumed it had already been working locally and you were having issues with others connecting from the outside.

Until you can get it to connect to the localhost at 127.0.0.1 you cant troubleshoot any other problems beyond that of the local computer.

Solve : vpn help?

Answer»

Hi I am an online poker player. The offshore sites have blocked U.S ip addresses and I am trying to set up a vpn service that would be undetectable to the pokersites so I can still play. I currently am using windows 7 and have paid for a service that gives me an static ip and dedicated server coming from the U.K. However I still have concerns about detection avoidance especially concerning DISCONNECTION protection, port security and FRDNS consistency, first level DNS registration and i.p address association security. I have done some research but would really appreciate if someone could give me some instructions on how to set up this up without the possibility of the poker sites detecting my vpn. Thank you.If you are doing a vpn to some server in the UK then I see no REAL concern for being detected. You are literally getting on the network that your UK provider is allowing you. From then on, any further connection to websites is literally coming from their network, not yours.

For example, when I vpn to my work from home, my internet access (browser) doesn't work anymore. I can browse computers at my work's connection. I can remote into my pc at work & from there I do any browsing of the internet that I need to. So I'm literally using my pc at work from home. Any connection I make to websites is coming from my work, not my home. The ip any websites see is from my work, not my home ip. Get it? They can't TELL I'm using vpn. All they can tell is that my connection to their site is coming from my work place. Hey thx for the reply. I am using my computer from here in the United States so im not logging into a computer over there unless UR REFERRING to the server over there. Also I am concerned about when the vpn drops the connection my original home connection reconnecting and picking it up. Any thoughts on this thx?Are you saying that when your vpn connection cuts out you stay connected to the poker site through your own internet connection?
It is my understanding that it isn't illegal to go to those poker sites - it is only illegal to transfer money to and from there. So you should be fine if your own internet connection keeps you connected.
What you should be concerned about is how you are transferring the money in and out. If you are transferring it directly from an American bank account or credit card then the government could know about it. If it is going through an intermediary or you are using an offshore account then you should be safe.

Solve : Unique Computer ID code - who can see this? Flash ID, and Ebay?

Answer»

Hi all

I've once again had to telephone EBay, sit on hold, go through several minutes of small talk and jibber jabber to re-verify my 'new' PC even though all I did was install a faster CPU.

Seems each time you tweak something, well at least something major, your unique computer ID gets changed? Are there any links on this to get me up to speed? I wasn't aware it was changed if you just swapped a RAM stick.

Anyway, it freaked me out a bit that Ebay knew I had changed my system before I was allowed to list an item for sale. They told me they do this via Flash, and not cookies. Where is THIS info stored? I would like to somehow hang onto my unique Flash identifier for any future tweaks so I don't have to call Ebay every time I change my system, and then try to list something. Is this possible, to cut and paste it like a cookie?

And if it'snot Flash - Can any website see this alternative Unique Computer ID? Can any website install a Flash identifier? How does this affect anonymous browsing via Proxies etc, I guess they are almost useless in this case? How much info can they see?

Any tips on this would be greatly helpful, I searched the forums first and the web to no avail...

cheers!

The CPIID was introduced by Intel in 1993.
the CPUID instruction only identifies what the CPU is.

the CPU serial number was introduced in Pentium 3 chips, and by default it was disabled and not something any software could query anyway. And they discontinued that because of the rampaging nerds from slashdot that felt their security was being violated.

What are your best suggestions to make myself invisible? As I understand it, if you can't hide your CPIID, even using a proxy surfer or anonymous surfing still means you are visible and identifiable by this. If I am, then you are. What do you do differently, may I ask?

The links to cookies info are helpful but not relevant, I was questioning who else has the ability to see, keep or intercept this information, this non-cookie information, and can your computer and therefore you, be identified by the CPIID and your IP put together? Even if you surf anonymously from time to time, that ONE time you don't, you're able to be identified by the CPIID?

Also, if you delete your cookies, web history, in fact EVERYTHING that CCleaner and Window Washer both remove, some websites still seem able to remember you. Why is this? The CPIID surely isn't used and stored by smaller websites such as a tiny regional newspaper website that seems to remember my past history when I visit no matter how many cleans have occurred.

CPUID is an instruction used in machine code to identify the processor. it was introduced with the 486, All it does is basically provide the processor type- the family. a 486 would say basically "I'm a 486". the "serial" number to which geek-9pm refers simply doesn't exist. It was implemented by the Pentium 3, disabled by default, and was intended to help audit a company's stock of computers. Only a native code program would be able to access this even if it was enabled. So unless a site uses an ActiveX control or you download something, that wouldn't work (and again, that was only for Pentium 3 machines).

Quote
How do they recognise you are suddenly on a new CPU and ask for new verification, if they aren't using it or some other unique PC identifying number/code/serial?
The fact that you are connecting from the same IP address and the cookie they set when you visited previously is no longer present.

You would get the same effect by clearing cookies. Either that or it inspected some of the other header values (things which may include screen resolution, browser, etc) and found it didn't match some sort of database for that IP address so it assumed it was a new PC. the former scenario is far more likely, though.

Geek's POINT was that EVERY computer that connects to the internet obviously needs some sort of identification so that data intended for other machines don't get sent to it and vice versa. If nothing else, the IP address. Of course, one can "mask" ones IP address by going through proxies, but the fact remains that to a adequately determined observer on the other end they can trace back and find you.

websites however simply work off what they are given. basically, they have your IP address, check for a locally stored cookie, and any server-side database they keep (which would have to be limited to be PCI compliant, I imagine).

it's basically the same as asking how a program knows it hasn't been run yet (for those that say stuff like "this is your first use of the program, would you like a tutorial" type thing. They basically set a piece of data that says "yes, I started" and inspect that when they start. Same for websites. If you access your e-mail or other services using the same IP address for three years, and then suddenly you are using a new IP address, that can make them "suspicious" and ask for further Identification to make sure it's really you. When you use a different computer the cookies aren't set, so obviously you will need to enter your login info.

Quote
I seem to be getting more questions from this forum, than answers. I'll look somewhere else.
What you call "tracking" I call good design; whether the site uses the information or not, it still has it. Some sites just try to use it more intelligently than others to improve the user experience, and some privacy zealots seem to dislike the fact that they can't hide their affinity for russian midget dinosaur pornography as easily. It's not really anything to worry about.

As for your original post, I've no clue what you are talking about, to be honest. Chances are your IP address changed (sometimes that can happen when you reboot the modem). I've used over 5 PCs on this connection and haven't had any problems with some sort of "verification" process.

Oh ,and I might point out, they are extra careful with ebay users who are sellers (which you imply being as you wish to list an item), because there has been a lot of fraudulent account usage. Somebody might be selling handmade doilies, and then suddenly 'they' are selling Toyota Camry's. of course they aren't, rather, their account was hijacked. The thing is, the people doing the hijacking will always be at a different IP address, so if Mrs. Doily maker is at one IP address in the UK and has been for say 3 years, only selling doilies, it's going to be suspicious when they log in from Thailand using a completely different IP and start selling counterfeit footwear. If nothing else, these checks are implemented to prevent fraudulent usage of your account, not to track your usage of their service (which is only a means to the end).

basically, Ebay probably does several things:

Flash cookies, as well as normal cookies. Both of which store tidbits of data on your machine.
IP address: as noted above, if you connect from the same IP address for three years, and then are suddenly connecting from another, they'll add extra checks to make sure it is you and not somebody trying to fraudulently use your account.

the IP address they of course have because your computer has to send it in order to get any data back (the receiver needs to know where to send the data, after all). Cookies and flash cookies are probably far less important. I don't think flash can inspect hardware configuration (it might) but I can see why that might be added. More likely it was a coincidence that your IP address changed when you upgraded to a faster CPU (or did you swap a RAM stick? I can't really tell).

If you try to use ebay through a proxy, you will almost definitely get the same prompt. You might consider reading their Privacy Policy, which lays out quite clearly exactly what they collect. That is the information they would be using to throw up additional prompts if your account usage suddenly falls outside expected norms. One portion that is probably relevant:

You agree that we may use your personal information to:

* prevent, detect, and investigate potentially prohibited or illegal activities, and enforce our User Agreement;
'personal information' being defined previously in there as the various web headers, IP address, and other information. I cannot find a single usage of flash anywhere in the site, so I doubt that is being used at all. ebay does use normal cookies (I have several set from ebay.ca as well as ebay.com), so those may be used as well.

A more technical description of the various header fields sent by most browsers can be found here. Here is a video about cookies.
http://video.about.com/netforbeginners/What-are-Internet-Cookies-.htm

As to the harm of cookies, that is debatable. The link above claims they are harmful.

As BC said, even when coolies are disabled, there has to be a WAY to ID one PC during a the time you are visiting a web site. The exception would be a broadcast that is going out to anybody who wants nit. But otherwise, a web site has to have a unique path to your computer.

A proxy can be used to hide your identity, to some degree,. The proxy knows your computer, but only gives the information to an authorized agency.
Another video about cookies:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ye8mB6VsUHwI have changed computers several times and ebay has never made me verify anything, and I am a seller. Some of my bank accounts will give me a message that says this isn't the computer you usually use and I have to answer a verification question and then say whether or not I want to save this computer as my permanent one, but it is all online.
If you are worried about being monitored, you should look into a VPN or at least install Peerblock. You would be surprised if you saw how many companies are GATHERING data about you and your internet activity.
Actually I don't know what I am doing now but I think something is blocking ebay cookies because I have to log in again to bid even if I am already logged in and looking at my account.

Solve : Can I isolate wired/wireless networks??

Answer»

I'm using an ATT gateway to WIRE connect my 2 old XP desktops to the internet. I currently have wireless TURNED off at the gateway. I bought a WIN7 laptop and will transition over to it eventually. When I TURN on wireless at the gateway I PICKUP a lot of active wireless networks as I live close to a major midwest university. Can I isolate the wired and wireless from each other in an attempt to keep prowlers out of my desktops?
Thanks, Jim You should be able to set up security at the gateway, ideally WPA or WPA2 - This would prevent others from connecting to your network entirely.camerongray: O.K. Thankyou!!Also, which modem is nit?

Solve : Network Speed Extremely Slow Upon First Startup?

Answer»

Me and a friend built a computer a few months back, it runs amazing, no problems... except.. the Internet Connection. When I turn off my computer and turn it back on it's basically non existent,Nothing loads, it runs LIKE my grandparents dialup use to. .70mbps download before it's "warmed up" when it's peak it's 40mbps, it takes a few hours, to a few days to warm up. It's a direct connection, I bought a $70 WIRELESS Adapter hoping it may help, it didn't. I THOUGHT about buying a PCI Network Card, Any thoughts, and any suggestions that may fix the problem? All Drivers are updated. What network card do you have? WIRED or wireless? What router/switch/other gear is involved? Is it just the speed from the internet that is affected, or also local network speed?I don't have a network Card, It's out of my Mobo. It's a direct connection, I also have a wireless adapter(I don't use it, it doesn't help). Seems to not affect the Local Network's connection.OK, what motherboard is it?
Does this happen if you reboot the computer, or only if you turn it off and back on?
Do you also turn your modem off, or does that stay on?Mobo is a ASUS F2A85-V FM2 AMD A85X. Yes if the computer is turned off at all, either by reboot or shutdown it screws it up. The Modem stays on almost all the time. My roommate has no problems with the internet. I had a Service call come out and he said it was just fine.Hmm, fair enough, I was wondering if perhaps the modem was being shut down at the same time the problem may lie with that, but it definitely seems like it's your PC.
You say the wireless card did the same thing?
If so, I can't see it being the network card or chip at fault. Might be worth checking if there's a more recent BIOS for your board, or a chipset DRIVER update.I'll check into the BIOS and the driver. thanks for the suggestions. : )

Solve : How can I share a connection via USB modem??

Answer»

So I want to SHARE an INTERNET connection from my iMac (either DIRECTLY through OS X or a WinXP virutal machine) or one of my laptops (XP/7) to a WINDOWS 98 desktop via a USB modem.

I understand there must be some sort of way to set up a NETWORK, but as far as telling 98 what to dial and how to set up the connection, I'm not sure.

I'm using a Lenovo USB voice modem.

Any links to guides or direct feedback would help. I've googled the matter and just can't find what I'm looking for.

Thanks! You have OS 10.5 -Right? You want full files sharing?
I don't know. Windows 98 can be hard to network anyway.
If you have Windows XP, why not put it on the PC?
It is easier to get a Mac and a XP PC to transfer files. Windows 98 has issues.

Share Mac Files with Windows XP
That is about all I can think of.

Solve : Powerline Networking??

Answer»

Hey guys I was thinking about purchasing a Powerline kit for use with my Blu-Ray Player. Now my Blu-Ray Player only has an Ethernet port and if I want the most out of it I need to connect to the internet, update drivers, etc. Also because it serves as my home theater receiver and if want to actually spread out my satellite speakers with out the use of wiring (the speakers are wifi enabled, the receiver itself is not. I dont know why, its just is lol) and Ethernet connection is necessary. So therefore I was considering purchasing a Powerline kit instead of laying 25 ft cable from my router to my Blue ray player. Now I have absolutely no experience with power line networking, what are some of things I should be aware of when it comes to it? Some of my concerns include:

1. I live in apartment with three other units. How does that affect my powerline network with the different circuit breakers and breaker poles in my unit?

2. My apartment BUILDING itself is pretty antique, I wanna say circa 1920. I have no idea what the wiring is like or if my management company updated the wiring. I have never had any power issues before and all my electronics power fine.

3. Since I'm in a multi-unit apartment building, how does network security work? Are a majority of powerline kits encrypted? Or will being on different circuit breakers take of care of security?

4. Realistically what sort of performance should I EXPECT? Is it worth investing in?

5. Which powerline standard should I go with, HomePlug AV, UPA, or HD-PLC?

6. Any good powerline kit recommendations?

Thanks in advance for all the help, I appreciate it greatly!I've had several powerline kits, and have been impressed with the results versus wireless networking.
To answer your questions...
1) This is impossible to answer until you get the adapters in, to be honest. I've never had a kit fail to work outright, if your wiring is old or there's a lot of "noise" on the circuits then you should expect a performance drop though.
2) See above. You may see a loss of performance but it's impossible to say before you give them a go.
3) It's possible that the signal will go through different circuits. I never had a security concern with mine because my neighbours didn't use anything of the sort. Most do seem to come with some kind of encryption nowadays, whereas the kits I've used didn't because they're quite old now.
4) Again, it's impossible to say as it depends on your wiring and circuit layout. I only used mine for an internet connection of 30Mbps, and they handled that perfectly. I never used them for file transfers so I couldn't comment on the network performance. From other people's experience, I think you could expect close to their advertised rate (e.g. if they advertise 500mbps you should get close to that) in ideal circumstances. That may sound like a silly statement but you don't always get what's advertised, with powerline you seem to mostly get quite close though.
5) Homeplug AV seems to be more common than the others, at least around here. I would go with what's most common as you then have more options for extending the network with compatible adapters at a later date, if necessary.
6) I've been out of the powerline game for a while now, my last kit was bought about 3 years ago and the kits I had before that were even older. The impression I get is that the cheaper brands have improved vastly. I had a Devolo kit (one of the first on the market) which eventually died from overheating, a Linksys PLE200 kit which also died from overheating, then a second PLE200 kit which is still running fine today. Devolo, ON Networks, and Netgear seem quite popular - also, it's worth looking at TP-Link, they used to be a bargain basement brand but their newer stuff is pretty decent.Simple answer is 'No'.
Ethernet cable is very mature and friendly and comes in a variety of colors and lengths. And the cost very very moderate.
Power Line networking is a juvenile with behavior problems.
But I an not a TRUSTED souse of information.
So read one or two of these
http://gallinazo.flightgear.org/technology/wifi-versus-powerline-networking/
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?257766-Powerline-Networking-Issues
The general idea is that PowerLine can go whee Wireless can not. Brick walls, STEEL doors and stuff like that. Otherwise, Wireless wins.Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 13, 2013, 02:03:58 AM

Otherwise, Wireless wins.

From your first link...
"Things to watch out for" on Powerline adapters, followed by lots of "I don't know".
"All disclaimers aside, I noticed a big improvement over my existing wifi network."
So he seems pretty happy with his.

Your second link is one person on a forum having an issue which he concludes with "I never did find out what the problem was, but I think that it was a faulty powerline device (it dropped the connection even without the second device plugged in on the same floor). Since the model has been discontinued and the warranty expired, getting a wireless N receiver seemed to be the simplest option."

I don't see wireless being the better option at all, and believe me I've had a lot of experience with wireless problems. Nobody who I've recommended powerline kits to has ever come back to me and complained about having issues. My kit at home (now my parents' house) is still working perfectly after 4 years. In the meantime one of the most common things I hear from friends or family is "my wireless isn't working" "my wireless keeps DROPPING out" "my wireless won't connect" etc etc.Thank you guys for all of the input!

Solve : internet does not work due to IP address problem?

Answer»

OS: Windows XP Home, Service Pack 3
Make/Model: Gateway Emachine
RAM: 1.46 GB
Protection: Kaspersky, Superantispyware, Malwarebytes
PCI Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP
Nvidia nForce Networking Controller
Type of internet connection: Local Area connection on this machine. Service is cable (formerly DSL when the problem started, idk if you needed to know that)
Desktop keeps trying to acquire network address. When I hit repair connection, message says "windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: renewing your IP address"
I have tried disabling and enabling connection
I tried reinstalling drivers (this seemed to start DNS client again as it would not start before but all of a sudden TCP/IP and DHCP are missing from the list which were there before, dunno why)

Was it ever working? Does it work on another computer?
Did the company give you a install disk for the modem?
Do you have a router? Do you have another PC and a local connection to the other PC using Ethernet cable?
How many times have RAN the the network wizard? Can you log into the control panel of the modem? Can you do the network diagnostics inside the modem control panel?
What is the model # of the modem?

Also, do you have another network card you can try?

Was it ever working? Yes. Does it work on another computer? Yes.
Did the company give you a install disk for the modem? No.
Do you have a router? Yes. Do you have another PC and a local connection to the other PC using Ethernet cable? No because the other PCs are wireless. this is the only one that's local
How many times have ran the the network wizard? Network setup wizard? Several. Can you log into the control panel of the modem? Control panel? You mean phone and modem options? Yes Can you do the network diagnostics inside the modem control panel? Hopefully what I've attached is what you meant
What is the model # of the modem? Don't know and don't know how to find it

Also, do you have another network card you can try? Unfortunately no

[regaining space - attachment deleted by admin]I'm not an expert, but I have rarely ever gotten the repair connection to work.
I have a home network and I couldn't get the network address to work on my second computer. What I did was go to Control Panel - Internet Connections, Local Area Connection - Properties -
In the Networking TAB, IR4 (Internet Protocol Version 4) - Properties - obtain an IP address auto
There is another protocol as well that you can try.
I don't know if this will help you, but I hope it does.
Have you tried calling the cable company? Sometimes they can reset your modem and that will fix it.When I said modem, I meant the cable modem. Not the dial-up modem.
So you have a router with modem? Is modem on the TV cable and the modem gos to the router with Ethernet? And wireless connection to the router works, but the Ethernet net does not?

On my machine the connections look like this:

As you can see, I hive the Ethernet (LAN) turned off and the Wireless on. But I can do it either way. I have to RUN a cable from the laptop to the router. My router is a combo modem and wireless all-in-one.

Often I have had problems with Ethernet cables. Somehow they get worn out. I haven to repair or replace them sometimes. Maybe you could try another Ethernet CableCheck your Wireless services startup type. It should be on Automatic.

Solve : Help wth cyber cafe?

Answer»

I am just setting up a small internet cafe with 8 desktop computer in a office. I am not very good with networking and would rate myself 5 out of 10. This is also my first time of doing anything like this. However, i am good with computer stuffs generally.

I have a router , network cables, printer and ofcourse the desktops all set up.

This is my knowledge of what i need to do. please correct me if i am wrong

1. Connect all desktops to an ethernet/desktop switch. ( i am using an 8 port desktop switch and an unmanageed switch so that the can adjust data TRANSFER automatically without having to be configured manually).

2. Run a network setup wizard on each computer connected to the switch, if the computer does not recognize its network connection automatically.

3 Open network and sharing center, Change advanced sharing settings, Click the arrow to expand, Home or Work, turn on network discovery, turn on file and printer sharing.

4. Rename the desktop e.g 1-8 and make sure the are on the same network e.g workgroup.

Here are my queestion. Please be easy on me if i got it all wrong

1. How do i make one desktop as the main computer so that it can control the printing etc

2. Where do i plug the main desktop to? Do i plug it with the ones on the 8-port switch or plug it directly to the router

3. what sort of ethernet/desktop switch do i use? Do i need a specialise one? Can anyone suggest please. Thanks in advance

4. What else do i need to do that i am missing out.

5. I read online that you need a server or can use a desktop as a server. How does that work out please?

6. I would also like every work done on the desktops not to be stored on the desktops as they have 2gb memory. i read online that they can be wiped out all night. i dont know how to do that. do i have to do that manually everynight?

Thank you guys in advance. Thank you.

1. How do i make one desktop as the main computer so that it can control the printing etc .. This is done through a simple printer share. You basically have all the computers part of the same workgroup, and set the printer to be shared. Then with them all connected to the network you can search for shared printers over network and detect it and add it as the printer to print to from each of the workstations.

2. Where do i plug the main desktop to? Do i plug it with the ones on the 8-port switch or plug it directly to the router. The info here appears to be a problem, as for with an 8-port unmanaged switch if you have 8 workstations connected to it, then there would not be a 9th connection for the router to provide DHCP as well as internet access. What you can do though is most routers have like 4 ethernet ports or more on them. Use a Cat5 patch cable to plug the port 1 of the router to port 1 of the switch. Now 7 of the computers will be using the remaining 7 ports on this switch, all sharing that single LINK out through the router. Now the 8th computer plugs into port 2 on the router, and since the switch is unmanaged and only being used to add ports for the computers to connect to, they are all on the same network and given IP's from DHCP from the router. The Internet port on the router goes to the modem, and modem connects to ISP through telephone line or Cable Broadband connection.

3. what sort of ethernet/desktop switch do i use? Do i need a specialise one? Can anyone suggest please. Thanks in advance Any cheap unmanaged 100mbps switch would work, you just need to have adequate ports to connect all the hardware. Any brand will work. I like d-link, netgear, and linksys for brands.

4. What else do i need to do that i am missing out. You may want to edit the user accounts on these machines so that the users are running as users and not administrators to avoid users from installing anything orinfecting the computers from attachments from their e-mail etc. You may also want to add content control to block inappropriate websites such as porn etc. I would also make sure the default password is changed on the modem and the router to avoid anyone from hacking it.

5. I read online that you need a server or can use a desktop as a server. How does that work out please? You dont need a server if all 8 workstations are WORKING as workstations each with their own content control enabled etc. The printer share is something that can be done by a regular workstation and served to other workstations. The only need for a server would be if you WANTED to use a proxy for content control in which a computer acting as a server between the router and the workstations has 2 network adapters one for local network and other for internet outbound connection, and the proxy is set up to filter where people can and cant go as a single location to control which sites are banned etc.

6. I would also like every work done on the desktops not to be stored on the desktops as they have 2gb memory. i read online that they can be wiped out all night. i dont know how to do that. do i have to do that manually everynight? There are a few different ways to do this which can be manual or automated. The best method would be to have an image server and every night the workstations after hours are pushed a clean image to the hard drives, this ensures that nothing remains from the prior use. I have also seen profiles configured to where no data can be stored outside of desktop and my documents, so you dont have to worry about people saving files in random locations on the hard drive, and its all saved on desktop and my documents only locations which are all contained as part of the user profile. This profile can be EITHER configured to delete all data back to clean state upon logoff or a system acting as a server that overwrites the same profile on all workstations with a clean copy of the profile after hours. The method of blocking users from accessing everything outside of the profile is probably the best method, as for the image server process would require licenses for each system that is covered by this process which can get expensive if your using Symantec Ghost for example to complete this. Also the profile method is not very bandwidth hogging, so you may only have 800MB to be transferred over the network at 100MB per profile per computer vs entire hard drive images that can be upwards of greater than 8GB for each system that is to receive a clean copy.

I have never seen the Ghost image used for Internet Cafe, only have seen it used many times for classroom lab use where colleges use it after a semester to wipe the systems clean of student data stored locally and refresh them back to clean state for the next semester to have a clean group of 30 computers in the computer lab.

Solve : Mozilla Firefox trouble: "The connection was reset"?

It's been a while now that I've been trying to connect to k2nblog.com. I thought it was just the SITE being down, but then I tried connecting to it with my smartphone using the same IP as my computer via wifi and it worked.

I'm running this on a Windows 7 if that helps.

My Firefox is up-to-date

I've already cleared my cookies and cache.

I've used CHROME as well to test, and it was also timed out on there.

Using Windows Firewall, and Avast as anti-virus. Pretty sure it's not Avast or the firewall because I turned both those off and tried connecting to the site with no avail.

I'm not using a proxy.

Any help with this situation would be great appreciated! That web site is a music site. It may be so popular that some times the site is overloaded and the SERVER cancels new connections.
Try different times in the day. Also that site has Facebook. Ask there if the site has overload. That might just be normal.Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 16, 2013, 01:55:00 PM

It's not because it's overloaded.

Like I said from my first post, the site works on my iPhone while connected to my wi-fi.

EDIT: I found the cause of the problem, my Malware BYTES Pro was blocking it believing it was malicious.

I tried to update the Firmware it has Ver. QZP002-3.4.012.0-PK5000Z; it says there is no new updates.

The error message says; Wrong key... This can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii characters or 10 or 26 hexadecimal.

Here are the settings under Wireless Setup

Basic Settings - page
1. Set the wireless radio state.
a. Wireless Radio; Enable
b. Change the network name; Network Name; myqwest***
c. Write down the settings
1. Wireless Radio On 2. Security Types: WPA - WAP2 Personal 3. Security Key - 13 characters
1. Security Types = WPA - WPA2 Personal

Wireless Security - page
1. Select the SSID (Network Name) = Myqwest****

2. Select security type = A
(a) WPA - WPA2 Personal (b) WPA Personal (c) WPA2 Personal (d) WEP (e) Security Off

3. Select encryption type = A
(a) Both (b) AES (c) TKIP

4. Enter security key/passphrase = Use Default - the default passphrase has 14 characters. Not the 5 or 13 the warnings says it has to be.
(a) Use Default Security Key/Passphrase (b) Use Custom Security Key/Passphrase

I tried placing "$" in front of the password like one website subjust and I have typed just 13 like it ask, but it STILL failed to connect.

I have ALSO changed it to Custom Security Key. It connects then I get a new message; "Limited or No Connectivity" I have rebooted and TRY to log on IE and it will not connection.

Thanks for all your help.If the router security encryption is set to WPA, the HP laptop should also follow the same encryption key. If the laptop does not support WPA or WPA2, its either you set the router back to WEP or upgrade the HP laptop's wifi adapter DRIVER or the hardware itself.Hum none of this is working for me and I need my computer for work soon
Some clarification.
The Windows 7 PC has no problem.
The issue is with am XP computer - Right?
Does it have all the updates?

Can the XP computer connect using direct Ethernet cable?
Can the XP PC connect wireless if there is no security?

Do you have a link to the Modem/rooter documentation, or do you have a picture of it? Some new models have very tough security requirements. They require you to establish physical presence or use a very long key to prove who you are. This is more that just the WPA-2 thing. I have a modem/router that would not connect unless you gave the number printed on the underside of the modem.

Solve : Net gear n600 wndr3400 guest account?

Answer»

Hello to the people of this site

I have a question that i wish to pose out to the public

On the router i have (name and MODEL in the title) it allowes the setup of two wireless SSIDs and passwords, known as a guest account. But for me, this feature is unable to work.

Any tips on what settings should be changed to allow my devices (iPods and windows laptops) online

The SSID for the guest account shows and prompts me with a login, but tells me when I type the password I set for it, that it is unable to connect due to an unknown issue.

Please HELP

Thanks to everyone in advance Net gear routers have some of the best help features.
Have you already looked on their site nor your product.
http://support.netgear.com/app/products/list
My Net gear router is a DIFFERENT model. I can use the guest account, but without SECURITY it creates problems. On this one there is the option to remit connection to the LAN, but still allow Internet.

Having a Guest account with FULL access and not security creates a problem the my system does not allow for more that a minute or two and then disconnects. But that is one way to check and see if it works at all. So it does work. I have not tried it with security like WEP or WEPA.Quote

Configure these settings that matches the router's security type on your wifi card/adapter to accept the pre-shared key or password. If the router is set WPA or WPA2(PSK), the adapter should support or have the same features.

It tells you how to do this and is VERY simple. Many people here are essentially SAYING the same thing (just using different terms to describe the same thing) and perhaps creating confusion in your mind. Solve : no connection to NAS?

Answer»

Did you type exactly what I wrote, i.e. including the two backwards slashes ('\\')?yes I did.Hmm. Which NAS box is it? Some early Buffalos have issues with Vista/Win 7.It is a Lacie NAS and it has always worked fine on my computer. So I don't think it had something to do with windows 7. I guess then, the next logical option is to ensure that your laptop is using the same group as the other machines and that discovery is switched on.

First of all try this: Start --> CONTROL PANEL --> Network and Internet --> Network and Sharing Center --> Change advanced sharing settings. Make sure network discovery is switched on. You may also wish to ensure file and PRINTER sharing is switched on.

Having applied those changes, try BROWSING to the NAS box again.

If that didn't work, on one of the other machines, check the workgroup it's connected to. Right-click My Computer, choose PROPERTIES. On Windows 7/Vista, click the Advanced system settings link. Go to the Computer Name tab of the System Properties box. Click the Change button to see the currently configured workgroup. On your laptop, follow a similar process only this time, change the workgroup to match the other computers. Reboot your laptop.

Any better? My daughter has the same problem every time she comes home from school. We always play around with it and eventually it works. Changing the homegroup never helped.
One thing that worked once was to go to Network Connections, Local Area Connection, Network 2, Shared
Local Area Connection Properties
Networking
IR4 Properties
obtain an IP address autoQuote from: lewy on October 04, 2011, 03:05:40 AM

What exactly is NAS??

Network Attached Storage - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network-attached_storageThank you for your suggestion but it didn't work. The confusing thing about it is that I occasionally when I start up my computer can connect to the NAS, I have to give my username and password something I didn't have to do before but it works. But than as soon as I start my computer again the next day it doesn't work anymore.
I have deleted all the wireless networks and than installed them again, but that didn't make a difference either. Do things work any better if you connect using a cable? Apologies if I've already asked this.

Solve : Problem with connecting to certain network!!!?

Answer»

I am now running OpenSUSE 11.4 on my HP laptop, but I am experiencing a weird problem with trying to connect to the NETWORK at my school. There is another network in the school that I AM able to connect to perfectly, but the main one that I want to connect to that covers the whole school is what I am having problems with. When I try connecting to it, the network monitor icon at the TOP of my desktop shows that I am connected to it and I even get a notification that I established a connection to this network. The problem is that when I open up firefox I am unable to even load in the login page for the wireless network which I need to do to use the network. I asked a friend at school already what the problem might be and he told me that it might be something in my configuration that is causing this. Thank you all for the help Major advances wee made to the Sue distro this year. If that has any impact on wireless connectivity is uncertain. I have not played with Suze for a long time.

The only suggestion I have is to use the divide and conquer approach. You get a Live CD of another distro and see if it works. If so, you know is an issue with the Suze. But it not, it is a configuration problem you need to resolve.

Here is the link for the current ISO of LINUX Mint.
http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php
I am not saying replace Suze. Just test another distro ans a diagnostic tool.
Just run it in the 'Live' mode, no need to put it on the hard drive.
Thank you for your reply, geek-9pm. That would make sense if that is the case, but I am able to connect to any other network, but just not this one for some reason I am unaware of. I already have a live CD of debian I can use, but I'll probably try the linux mint one just for the heck of it because I've never used it before and it would be PART of the divide and conquer approach that you mentioned. I'll notify you on here with any updates or anything that I COME across with.Quote from: timtim41 on October 17, 2011, 11:50:41 AM

Is a private IP address assigned to your laptop? I'm thinking it might be a DNS resolution error-try using the Google DNS Servers:

Solve : Trouble with wifi connection?

Answer»
Hi

Thought I had it sorted and it lasted acouple of days before dissapering again. I put wifiinspector on the laptop and was making sure when it dropped off that there wasn't anyone locally on the same channel , and did have to change it a couple of times.
What I did find was that when it drops it's not even showing on the wifiinspector radar ( even though the router - general summary page , show's a green light for the wifi ) and it stay's that way untill I push the reset button or turn everything off and reboot ( the computer / modem/router isn't switched on all the time only when we use it. ) At the moment IF it gets picked up it's only lasting for 10/15 mins. sometimes right from the start up it doesn't show.

I'm going to get back onto aol and see were that gets me , other than that I'm not sure what to do.

Thanks , Adam

Oh , and the laptop is about 6 to 8 ft away , and it's the same for the phones as wellThe only thing i can think of remaining is to try an external router (a dongle) in a USB PORT and bypass the internal wi-fi chip. They are not expensive. I wish i could guaranty that it will solve your reception problem but i cannot be certain. If you can find a person you know that is using one (often used for wireless reception on desktop computers) and borrow it. Including the software disc. All the ones i have installed over time require the software installation BEFORE connecting the hardware and a prompt occurs when it is time to install the dongle. In the event the lender doesn't have the written instructions anymore. truenorthQuote
summary page says the wireless is on the laptop's not picking it up 6 ft away. Really not sure where to look.
I don't understand summary page. When you have a PREVIOUS successful connection, it will create a network profile then usually when the wifi card/adapter would pick up the signal, it will connect automatically which is found on the network profile SSID properties. There are 2 things you should look, the router's wifi led light if its on or green and the home network SSID is not set to hidden. Put back the wireless mode on Advanced settings to Mixed mode.
Hi

Truenorth - I have got a usb wifi adapter that I use on our other laptop , I'll give it a go and see what happens.

Jason - What I 'meant was , I use wifiInspecter on the laptop to show what networks on on in the AREA. When the laptop looses the internet it doesn't show on the scan with wifiinspecter - but when I log into the router setup on internet explorer and goto the general summary page it show 3 green lights one for interent , one for DSL and one for wireless ( I also have all green lights on the modem/router itself )

I've got back onto aol today so I'll see what they say as well.

Thanks , AdamA wireless network adapter switch that's not enabled
WEP, WPA, or WPA2 security key or PASSPHRASE issues
Cables that aren't connected properly
Corrupted or incompatible drivers
Missing updates
Network connection settings
Hardware or software problems

Hi

Same reason to be honest. You can be on the laptop using wifi , and it will only stay connected from about 10 - 20 mins then it just disappears and to carry on I have to connect with a cable. Using a wifi tracker ( Xirrus wifi inspector ) it shows it to begin with but when it drops out it's gone from the tracker as well. It doesn't seem to matter if the pc's on at the same time or not , and the router is about 5 ft away from the laptop.

Aol to be honest don't WANT to know , there answer I've got broadband into the house , they can send someone round which is going to cost me wether or not they can find anything apart from that I'm on my own.

Just don't know what else to try now.

Solve : WIRELESS CONNECT PROBLEMS?

Answer»

I got a Panasonic Let's Note series laptop. It's the Japanese version of the Toughbook. I have had it for about 5 years and originally installed Windows XP English into it.

A few weeks ago, I couldn't get my wireless connection to work at home. I tried it away from home and had the same problem. An error message -- something about a supplicant problem -- kept popping up everytime I tired to connect. A computer tech GUY checked it and told me that my wireless card was not functioning. He SUGGESTED I get a wireless adapter. I went on Ebay and bought an LB-LINK Wireless USB Adapter (150Mbps). I installed the software and got it to work -- at a computer shop. In fact, I got it to work at 2 different computer shops I have visited in the past couple of days. However, at home and where I am currently take a course (my school), I am unable to hold my Internet connection for more than a few seconds before it disconnects.

Can anyone suggest anything? Obviously, I don't want to have to go out and buy another wireless adapter. The laptop WILL work when hardwired into my LAN at home. I would like to be able to take it with me -- at least for now so I can get my other laptop serviced (it has a problem with its heat sink and possibly CPU fan).

THANKS!Good morning hockeysticks and welcome to CH

If your old wireless card went bad (couldn't get a connection) so you bought a new one and it works everywhere else but at your house for a few seconds.

#1... Sometimes moving your wireless router may help with a weak wireless connection
#2... Is your wireless network encrypted if so did you put in your access key.
#3... The wireless setting in wireless card must match your router. Example if your router is set up for WPA2-PSK than the wireless card on your laptop must be set up with the same settings / keys etc.
#4... Have you tried resetting your router for US networks / channels etc.
#5... Is your router set up to block certain ip's or mac address

Hope this helps please let us know if we can help you any further. Mike
Mike- Thanks for your reply. The signal strength is not an issue at all. The REALTEK wireless connect seems to be strong and connect but my windows wireless will not connect or hold the connection. I put the access key in and it no longer requires it again. I think #3 you mentioned may be the issue. Not sure how to deal with your #4 and #5 below if it could be the problem.

Sorry i was not trying to loose you by putting in terms / info that you may not know how to check or FIX and I am not trying to be a wise guy either .

Now for this "I put the access key in and it no longer requires it again" that is normal if all the settings are correct and if the key is entered correct than it should not ask you for it any more if that is what you are talking about.

for #4... The reason why I put this part in was your laptop was a "I got a Panasonic Let's Note series laptop. It's the Japanese version of the Toughbook." so if you where in the US now than you would have to set up the router for US channels in the router interface. Sorry this I was assuming because you had a Japanese unit.
for #5... In the router interface any PC's / equipment can be blocked by IP address / mac address so it can not get on / connect to the network and internet.

In most cases when a wireless connection is getting set up but then looses that connection almost instantly that is a configuration issue or it appears it will connect but never really does that is a configuration issue. If the drivers where the issue you would not have been able to "I got it to work at 2 different computer shops I have visited in the past couple of days."

Sorry I can tell you how to check the router web app and how to check / make changes because I don't know what model router you have and what country you are in now.

Please let us know how you make out, Mike Check if the wireless radio is on
Try to get closer to the router/access point, eliminate interference
Restart or reset the wireless router or access point
Check the SSID
Make sure your network card automatically obtains IP and gateway settings
Update your network card drivers and OS
Let your computer try to repair the connection

Solve : Bluetooth adapter not being detected in OpenSUSE 11.4!!!?

Answer»

I hope this is the place for posting problems with bluetooth, anyway, here goes. I am running OpenSUSE 11.4 on my HP laptop, and I've tried and tried and tried, but I just cannot even get my bluetooth adapter to be detected by the OS. It is an external USB adapter and not a built-in one. I think this problem might come from a bug in this version of OpenSUSE, but I don't know entirely. If this helps, here is the output of a few commands that I ran:

$ hcitool scan

$ hcitool dev

Do you think it would work under wine at all?I think that would be even harder to resolve. The INTEGRATION between the Linux and Wine subsystems is highly complex.

But don't worry - the chances are always good that a driver will be along shortly for your device. It might be available already, just not included in your distro.I'll keep searching for any available drivers that might be out there. I've only been using openSUSE for maybe a month now, so I'm still not clear on exactly what bugs there might be in this distro, or what it's bluetooth LIMITATIONS are at all. If I don't find anything, I guess I can just not use bluetooth.

Solve : Will wireless connect v. wired bottleneck dedicated rackmount server?

Answer»

Hello, I am planning to setup a rackmounted server using old parts that I will soon have due to upgrading my current desktop. Old parts: AMD 9500 Phenom, 3GB DDR2 800Mhz, 8500GT GPU, 450watt PSU. I live with my parents and I already know without asking that I won't be able to run ethernet either through the walls or on the floor or ceiling. I plan to use the server to host an L4D2 server, my internet is 10 megabits down and .93-1.00 megabits up connection, even with wireless G connected on my desktop I get maximum speeds 99% of the time. So, will having the server connected using WIFI bottleneck it's PERFORMANCE? I'm going to be using a CCI EZFOLD wall mounted server rack, and a 4U server chassis to fit everything inside. Have FUN!
Your ISP limit you to 10 M bps download, Right?

If you Wireless is running at near 54 M bps, the connection to the Internet would not be much faster if you had a direct Ethernet cable.
As you said, maximum speeds 99% of the time. That is as good as it gets.

For a server, you would like to have the 'uplink' speed to be better. But the ISP has an asymmetrical bandwidth for technical reasons.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5ptj9F5v2A

Yes that's the game, but the software is SRCDS (Source Dedicated Server) all I have to do is install everything via usb to the server and set it up to run correctly, then I am getting a monitor and keyboard of course to manually monitor/configure the server when needed.

So far I have decided to go with:

1.) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138294

2.) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811219026

3.) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817104077I have changed my mind, I will be attempting to co-locate these parts to a local data center for $99.99 a month. It seems the only way to get a fast enough internet connection would be to go the ISP Business route, but I don't run a business and their speeds are negligible at best, at this price it's a steal, and I get Tier 1 data speeds. Let me know what you all think about co-locating a game server. Yeah. That is how the IT world is going.
In the early days of the Internet you had to get your own server. v Now big companies own RACKS and racks of serves with redundant equipment and software. So they rent out extra capacity using what they call a 'virtual server'. When the traffic gets heavy, the bring on-line more equipment that was idle and with clever software your stuff is non another server. The performance, overall, goes beyond a dedicated server in some cases.
You can Google
Virtual Gaming Server
And net hundreds, if not thousands of companies that want yhour business. They often promise 1 TB of bandwidth. I can not even begin to understand what that could mean.
At one time I had the 1&1 service, but I can not afford it on my budget. I never could find a way to make money consistently. The one thing the above points overlook: internet speed may not be throttled by using wifi, but LAN speed will. And in the circumstances above, a couple of Homeplug AV adapters would provide circa 200Mbps bandwidth between server and switch (assuming the switch and server were both 1Gbps-capable).

Solve : what router?

Answer»

I have a Sky Router with Sky broadband.but they don't last i am on my 4th in 3 year's before they have been replaced now i have to BUY it .
the cost around £37. is there a better one i can buy. that is compatible.

thank you.Unfortunately with Sky you need one of their routers. You would have to check with them if there are any others that are compatible.I believe you can switch a Sky DSL router to what is, in effect, modem-only MODE and connect it to another router, but it would involve going against Sky's terms and conditions since you would have to extract the password and also you would have to CONFIGURE the second router's firewall. To replace the Sky router completely you would have to do MAC spoofing which is against the Sky Ts and Cs. Quite a lot of people in this situation switch DSL suppliers. I am with Virginmedia (cable) and they place no restrictions on people switching to modem only mode and using other routers, in fact they tell you how to do it.
Thanks to all of you for the replys' seems i'm stuck with what i'v got .still it's working so why fix it. Routers are small physical devices that join multiple networks together. Technically, a router is a Layer 3 gateway device, MEANING that it connects two or more networks and that the router operates at the NETWORK layer of the OSI model.
