Solve : Did my ISP rip me off??

Answer»

I'm with distributel 30mbps cable unl. and I did a speedtest today. Speedtest.net hovers around 30mbps but whenever I do a speedtest on youtube video players, it gives me around 800kbps on AVERAGE and next to the HTTP i get around 3000kbps when I stream 1080p. (youtube.com/my_speed says my ISP is 6.21mbps)

Idk much about how speed tests work but I feel like youtubes speedtests are more accurate considering most of the TIMES the buffering is way too slow to KEEP up with the 1080p stream. Or maybe it's something wrong with the way I set my wires/cables/settings? Or am I getting ripped off by my ISP? I don't have a crappy computer either it's actually far from crappy.Quote from: thehandyman on February 12, 2013, 05:27:28 PM

You TUBE is not a reliable test of speed.
Netflix, and some others, do streaming paid for by consumer directly. Such companies have a commitment to reliable streaming. Even so, only 3 Mbps is needed, not 30 Mbps.

IMHO, if you ISP can not give you perfect service on Netflix or Hu,lu, they are not giving your you paid for.
uThat doesn't tell me anything. I don't have netflix and hulu only lets people watch from the US. Youtube has a lot of educational videos ASWELL as entertaining videos and can be viewed from (almost) anywhere. If you're telling me that youtube is not reliable for a speed test how does that explain the crappy streaming speed I get from the youtube video players? I can't watch youtube videos from any other source nor do I know how to.

Solve : Best antivirus software easily administred on a a network?

Answer»

am trying to source for the best antivirus that i can implement for my network of 60 computers with my server able to update the antivirus automatically when updates are available. following this you can propose some assistance materials for guidance in setting up and configurations for that particular antivirus.
thanxFor a business with 60 important systems, I'd go with NORTON Endpoint, however I haven't used the Endpoint version yet. In the past I supported CORPORATE NETWORKS running Norton AV Corporate Edition and we had a single server that was used to manage updates to all 400+ clients. Norton is also costly and there may be a cheaper way to go however when it comes to being the IT guru of a $120 million a year food STORE chain, we couldnt cut any corners and they could afford the licensing required. The prior Norton AV Corporate Edition was very easy to manage. We never had any ISSUES with this, and we had a laptop that almost got infected by an employee letting their son use it for limewire P2P and when it reconnected to the network I was alerted immediately to its attempted infection in quarantine and the virus name and details.

Solve : Networking problems.?

Answer»

Hi all.
I have attached a drawing of my set up.
I have had this set up for a few years now.
The problem is that since I changed my ISP and router I cannot get the AP in the loft to keep it's settings.

I have a HUAWEI HG523a router as used by TalkTalk. (Was a Thomson)
The loft AP is a D-Link DWL-900AP+, Ver C2.

This is a step by step of what I have done since the connection dropped.
Went up the loft to reset the AP.
Logged in to the IP via web browser, 192.168.0.50.
Went to ‘Advanced’ and chose ‘Wireless Client’, did a site survey and chose my network.
I then set the AP back to an ‘Access Point’.
The site survey loaded all the settings in the ‘Wireless’ options, SSID, channel number etc.
I didn’t bother with any WEP Encryption at this point.
I gave the LAN settings an IP in the same range as my ISP router and entered the gateway number.
I gave the AP an SSID ‘Workshop’
I restarted the AP and logged in using the new IP.
All settings HELD.

My iPhone found the new ‘Workshop’ network and connected no problem.
I went to my workshop to see what was going on up there.
I was again able to use the ‘Workshop’ network to browse with my iPhone.
I found the ‘Workshop’ network on my workshop PC and asked it to connect.
As expected It told me there was no security, I asked it to connect anyway.
It did, signal strength excellent, status=connected.
As soon as I tried to use the internet all connections were lost from the AP.
I tried accessing the AP from my HOME PC but somehow the settings had been changed and I had to reset it again.

So I tried these settings in the AP.
192.168.1.254 for IP
255.255.255.0 for Subnet
192.168.1.1 for gateway

Password protected the AP.
WEP encrypted the wireless network.
Tried my iPhone, works perfectly.
Tried my Vista laptop, works perfectly.

Left the house for an hour or so, came back and the AP is inaccessible again.
Laptop not able to connect nor iPhone.
This is without turning on the workshop PC.
I don't see how the AP can have it's IP changed?
This is something simple but what?
It must be something to do with the new router, like a lease time issue??

The workshop PC is XP
The laptop is Vista
The home PC is 7
Then there is the iPhone
I have tried changing the security in the router to WEP so it matches the AP form of security, still no good.
Has anyone got a clue as to what I can try next?
Cheers.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]If settings are not holding the AP is either getting hacked by someone who is messing with your settings or for some reason the AP is LOSING its settings when power is disrupted etc. If you configure it to work and then unplug the AP from power and then wait a few minutes and then plug it back in, does it still work? I am guessing your using a password for your wireless devices that is not easy to guess and not the default from manufacturer such as password or admin etc.

Your picture is interesting as for I am not sure why you have 2 cables going to the AP, when only 1 is needed to the router.Hi Dave, thanks for the reply.
It is definitely not a security issue, I have tried leaving it open to make it simple and password protecting the AP and the network.
The failure happens the same way after pretty much the same time.
I am doing exactly the same as before I had a router change and never had any issues.

Not sure what you mean by the two cables?
The router shown in green is in my lounge and that is connected by Ethernet, the short brown cable on the right of the router,
to my home PC.
The brown Ethernet cable coming out of the back of the router is the one that is feeding the AP in the loft which in turn is connected to the antenna via the purple cable.
The only other cable is the one marked 'A' which is doing nothing at the moment (it is on there as I was going to change my set up at one stage so you can ignore it).
Today I am going to reconfigure my old router to see what happens.
If all runs ok then there must be a compatibility issue with the AP/router.
The AP is 802.11b only so I'm wondering if that is the grief.
I know the n/g stuff is usually backward compatible but not sure if it works the other way around (probably not without a firmware update and this AP is now obsolete).
I may end up having to use power line adapters, I think these use the earth cable on the electricity circuit?Quote

I may end up having to use power line adapters, I think these use the earth cable on the electricity circuit?

I used a pair of these at a food store vs stringing Cat5e plenum cable about 200 ft through the rafters 30 ft up above the sales floor. I found that they worked as a good network bridge when connected to outlets that were running off the same phase, but if plugged into an outlet on a different line phase they didnt work. You would probably be ok with them, but just wanted to mention this observation from my use of them. I lucked out and an outlet on the opposite wall of the network switch that we were adding was on the same phase, so I just had to dress a Cat5e cable around the storage room where this device was used. Never tried using these other than as a quick and simple bridge to the servers at the back of the store to the pos systems and deli scales at the expanded portion of the store when the store bought out the neighbors space to knock down the wall and expand in. (Really happy I was able to convince the GM not to go with a wifi cafe setup to the modern cafe they wanted. My statement of that it would cause people to never leave and the limited seating would anger people, so just make the food and beverages available, but dont give them a reason to stay beyond that! )

Quote
The failure happens the same way after pretty much the same time.

Strange that it happens after a same period of time. If the power is noisy, I'd have the AP powered through a line conditioner or a UPS which will ensure that dips in power dont cause the AP to act up.

Quote
Not sure what you mean by the two cables?
I saw the unused cable labelled "A" that went diagonal and it appears that its left over from an earlier setup possibly. Since an AP only needs 1 cat5 cable connection.

Well, not quite sure which setting sorted it, but sorted it appears to be.
I started again with different but identical AP.
Left everything as basic a possible.
Changed the Beacon Interval to 197 from default of 100.
Got solid connection but a very weak signal.
Changed the Antenna to external from the default of diversity and over a minute or so the signal strength changed to very good.
Been a good connection for over a week so it looks like it is sorted.
One day all this will be simple!!
Thanks for the help and suggestions.Glad its working ok now. And thanks for reporting back what fixed this in case anyone else out there hits this on google search for similar problem. Can't Decide Which Network Gear You Need

Solve : *255 broadcast address assigned to one computer?

Answer»

I get this when scan my network with Colasoft MAC Scanner:

10.0.10.226 F8:1E:DF:F2:54:C6 COMP-name
10.0.10.255 1C:65:9D:39:DF:B9 COMP-name

The same is shown by SoftPerfect Network Scanner.

The user of that device receive daily messages about IP conflict.
When that specific device isn't connected on the network another one appear to be assigned to broadcast address.
And also this one receive IP conflict message.
If the first one is connected back, he get back the broadcast address.
Somehow his device is preferred by this error, only when isn't on the network choose another device, and I am the other one!
First device is a MacBookPro and my PC is a PackardBell (Acer Group), both are connected via WiFi routers TP-LINK, same model but not the same router.

So, how it is possible? And what can I do to fix it?
It is an error of network configuration, or what else?
The system on x.x.x.255 needs changed to be set to any IP Address between x.x.x.2 and x.x.x.253

Addresses that are

x.x.x.0
x.x.x.1
x.x.x.254
x.x.x.255

are reserved and computers should not be on these IP addresses even if it were a Peer-to-Peer network with only2 computers. By habit always use x.x.x.2 to x.x.x.253 for computers. You can set it static vs dynamic and fix this, although thinking your already using static IP address vs DHCP dynamic because DHCP is incremental from the starting IP and then allocates within the RANGE that is set. On most routers out of box they want to operate DHCP on 192.168.1.x and the router wants 192.168.1.1 and will give the first computer or network device/printer etc 192.168.1.2 and then the next device/computer 192.168.1.3 and so on. However depending on router features you can tell it to start the DHCP IP address pool at 192.168.1.100 and so 192.168.1.2 thru 192.168.1.99 are free for static IP network configured devices etc. I like to put network printers etc on static configuration vs having it float on DHCP where if the printer is shut off for too long it loses its temporary lease on IP reservation. Its nice when set static and always at say 192.168.1.10 etc.
On my network I use 10.0.10.1 for the gateway router and 10.0.10.254 for a LAN printer.
Do you think it will be better to change this?
I know that is not good to use x.x.x.0 and x.x.x.255, but why x.x.x.1 and x.x.x.254 are restricted too?
Most of the router have x.x.x.1 IP by default!Router/Gateway on x.x.x.1 is correct!

Printer on x.x.x.254 I'd move if this is a corporate/business network. If its a home network you can have your IP's any way that you like pretty much, but its best to stick with the x.x.x.2 to x.x.x.253 range byhabit for computers and devices that are not normally on the reserved IPs.Ok, I have changed the printer from x.x.x.254 to x.x.x.252, but the problem still exist.
I have always one of the computers from my LAN associated with x.x.x.255!

So, I have the same MAC address associated with two IP's, but the host name is different.
On x.x.x.255 appear the MAC address of my PC associated with the host name of a MacBookPro?!

IP Address MAC Address Host Name
10.0.10.211 1C:65:9D:39:DF:B9 PACKARDBELL-PC
10.0.10.226 F8:1E:DF:F2:54:C6 MACBOOKPRO-DB46
10.0.10.255 1C:65:9D:39:DF:B9 MACBOOKPRO-DB46

How can be possible? And what can I do to fix it?
I am not familiar with Apple/MAC OS, but you will want to manually set the IP to static IP of an IP that is not already in use between x.x.x.2 and x.x.x.253

That is the fix for this computer that shouldnt be at x.x.x.255

As far as 2 systems with the same MAC address that MAKES no sense. I have only seen it once and it was when a MAC address was edited to be cloned to another system for reservation purposes on DHCP where 2 systems, one in use and the other as a backup system clone to the system for quick swap, and this allowed for a lower level IT employee to swap out a TOWER and when it booted it would be at say 192.168.1.250 just like the other system that was removed due to a failure of some kind.

Where are you FINDING this INFORMATION? And if you ping 10.0.10.255 is it responding or offline? You can try IPCONFIG/FLUSHDNS from PC command prompt/shell and see if it is still there if you are seeing this just from the PC.

IP Address MAC Address Host Name
10.0.10.211 1C:65:9D:39:DF:B9 PACKARDBELL-PC
10.0.10.226 F8:1E:DF:F2:54:C6 MACBOOKPRO-DB46

Solve : Help setting up FTP....?

Answer»

Hello - I've been trying to set up FTP to transfer files and am USING FileZilla. In going through the process I am finding that something is blocking it. YES, I have allowed ACCESS through my Norton firewall, but think it might be the available port issue. I've worked on this for hours, and just can't seem to get it. I am not very familiar with this kind of stuff, just am usually able to follow directions and figure things out, but this I can't seem to figure out. Here is the error message I get. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you!

but it's not working. So frustrating! What host are you connecting to? Or is a private host?I am trying to set it up between myself and an office, through FileZilla, and I really don't have much of a clue as to the ports, addressess, etc., other than what I am finding out on google. I have found my IP address, and when I look in msprompt for my available ports, they say they are established so I have let the wizard choose, but wonder if there is something else I am missing, since the connection gets closed.

Solve : network at school screwing computers?

Answer»

Dear Friends,

I am at school trying to help my teachers out with a network problem.
The school is hooked up to a school network and this is what the computers run on so you can log in to your specific account number.

some computers work and some say that the network is unavalible. can some one help me describe how to make sure that these laptops are ALWAYS connected to our school network.

Denis13fontad,
Welcome back to CH. You have been here before, so you know we need a lot of info before we can help you.

A LAN with over eight computers on at once ought to have a domain controller. Do you understand what this means? Is there a computer that is the domain controller?

You have windows 7 on your computer. Are most or all students use laptops with either Vista or Windowsn7? Do you ever have connectivity issues on yours?

How large is the campus? Is this a wireless or WI-Fri system that covers a large are with two nor more Access Points?

Some security concerns.

The FORUM will want to know if you have authority to make any changes into the network system and you you have permission to troubleshoot individual computers? Don't you have a teacher nor unteach assistant that has administrative oversight of the network? Can't he/she come to the forum and post a descriptions of the problem?Quote from: Geek-9pm on October 21, 2011, 06:18:54 PM

I'm SORRY to be so contentious, but this statement is false. Is this even a Windows network?

Certainly a lot more information is needed regarding this network. Is there a DHCP controller? Static IP addresses?

Router works fine and has since installed. Recently connected wireless mode with AirLinlk PCI adapter which also works fine. Tonight, router displayed proper wireless connectivity,.... I disabled and reconnected the ethernet which proceeded to perform fully. On reconnecting the wireless it worked properly.
http://forums.comcast.com/t5/General-Hardware-and-Software/Router-NetGear-WNR-150-1000v2/td-p/818070
You might want to read the rest. My point is that a user should not tinker with the Comcast setup unless it is really necessary. In most cases a power on serest of all parts of the network are needed.
The Net-gear documentation can help. It is not always easy to log in with the IP address. The address may have changed. Check the documentation for the recommended log in procedure.

EDIT:
The manual days:
Quote
You can enter either of these addresses to connect to your wireless router:
http://www.routerlogin.net
or
http://www.routerlogin.com
Try it!

Hey thanks Geek-9pm for the quick response. Yeah i was attmpting the log in using those METHODS. It wasnt until i powered off the router and restarted that it recognized the Ethernet cable. I wa sthan able to log with http://192.168.1.1. I enterd the default user name password (on the back of the router) and change my password/username, which was my first goal. It doesn't always work (log in) and now when i try to log back in to confirm changed my password DOESNT work, probally a typo. I just want to make sure that deafult log in has changed and sience admin/password (default)doesnt work i guess i did it right even if i cant recall what i changed the password too LOL right? What would be the technicall consequences of a reset? Again thankyou so much.Comcast may have set your router to a different MAC address or otherwise gave it a special something that identifies o Comcast. So a 'hard reset' will destroy any special settings. You need to find out from them.
Also, the MTU may have been tweaked by them.
Router password is not really needed. t is more important to have a secure tireless connection.

Comcast MTU setting is 1500 i guess. Thanks for the imfo i'm glad i didnt jump the gun as i dont have my isp's imfo handy. Any tips on how i can help on this forum? I applyed at a malware removal school just waiting to hear back, i can start another thread if need be. Thanks again.Glad you got it under control/

Solve : IP information on full headers?

Answer»

We have one internet connection, but quite a few PEOPLE use this. If I check the full header information on EMAIL messages (those I've sent to others, and those where the RECIPIENT has RESPONDED to me, and vice versa), I can see our IP address, whether I use web-based email accounts or ISP accounts. Our ISP tech support staff assured me that this wasn't possible. Other tech experts I asked said it wasn't possible. I know our ISP address and I know what I'm seeing in the headers.
My question is: How can it be that I can see this when others swear they cant?
My OS on this PC is Windows XP, but I've also checked it on Windows Vista.
I'm running Firefox Version 5 (I believe).Chances are you are looking at the HTTP Request header, which will always contain your IP address, not your that of your ISP email server.Quote from: bobsklarservices on October 19, 2011, 01:04:12 PM

Sorry, but could you clarify your comment, please? ie: What is the HTTP Request header? Also, don't understand the significance of that. Can others see our IP when they receive an email send via this connection (if they check in full headers)? Also, don't understand the last part of your sentence.Quote from: bobsklarservices on October 19, 2011, 01:04:12 PM

What BC said.

All properly functioning mail servers and most email programs add so-called "internet headers" to email messages. Those headers are intended for consumption by mail servers and (competent) I.T. personnel only.

Every mail client I've used to date (including web mail services) has a method to view these headers. The next time you call your ISP, it might be best to ask to speak to a grown-up.... ;-)

How do you know it's showing "fake" details if you don't know who OWNS the domain? If the WHOIS data is incorrect or privacy-guarded, your only real OPTIONS are to contact the domain registrar or the relevant registry. Welcome to the CH forums. Yes it would be possible under certain circumstances (such as someone using her device and sending you a message). However now that you have confirmed it being a ruse time to MOVE on. As to this "why would they try add me?." the answer is only LIMITED by the imagination of the person that would venture an opinion on the question you have asked. truenorthFB Friends request could come from people you have currently added which is to suggest friends that are common or mutual.
http://www.facebook.com/help?page=767I'm not sure I'm in agreement with either piece of advice above. A typical, possibly automated, phishing/identity theft strategy is to compromise one account and then use that account to ATTEMPT to trick other people into revealing personal information. In this scenario, Nefarious Fraudster hacks into ExGF's account and immediately parses all ExGF's Facebook date to acquire details of all possible further targets. Immediately sends friend requests to EVERYONE in order to extract information from their Info pages, once the friend request is accepted.

Given that many people have extremely insecure passwords, this kind of strategy is all too common.

Alternatively, maybe ExGF was drunk and hopeful.

Solve : What exactly can a website see from an IP or ISP address??

Answer»

I was wondering what exactly can a website see when they access your ISP or IP address. For example if I want to register on any website, can it see info about my specific computer, or my name, and any other personal info if it has access to my email as well? I just ask because I'm not familiar with how this works.

Thanks everyone! They cannot access any personal information unless you provide them. That is why there are trusted/reputable/safe/secured sites. You could always clear temp. files to manage tracking cookies being STORED on your computer.I think at the very worst they can find out your general vicinity.

Even if your IP is dynamically generated (meaning your ISP issues you a new one periodically or if you reconnect your modem), your ISP will still give IPs that a local to your area.

This site does it: http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?GetLocation

And just Googling "what is my IP" will give that information to you. Thanks guys!

The reason I was wondering was because a website I was registered with was able to confirm my IDENTITY when I was using a brand new email address before I could even mention anything. But I guess I had something visible that enabled this.Quote

This is still reasonably inaccurate though.

The only things that a website really has access to are: the browser you're using, the operating system you're using (both of these are held in what's called your "user AGENT"), your ISP hostname, your IP address, and from your IP address, the general area where you're connected to the internet, +/- 50-80 miles.Quote from: jm57 on OCTOBER 17, 2011, 09:58:16 PM

Your Public IP address is like your house address. The post office knows the names that live there so they can deliver the mail. The Internet knows your Public IP, so the info gets to your computer. Thanks everybody!

Solve : How can I get internet access on a laptop with cable running into the house??

Answer»

During the school year my daughter will be staying with my Dad. He has 1 computer with a cable CONNECTION. He says it runs into the back of his computer. Do I have to buy a wired/WIRELESS ROUTER? And an ethernet card for him? And the part that goes into the laptop for wireless? Or because she will have cable TV in her room, is there something they sell that she can hook up in her room to that cable connection? I know how routers work, I have 1 at home, but am not familiar with laptops. A laptop has the same connections as a desktop...only difference maybe the laptop MAY have a wireless adapter already installed. If it doesn't...you'll need a wireless adapter for it...if you plan on connecting wirelessly.

That being the case, you will need a wireless router...and that's pretty much it.

Follow the directions from the user guide of the router you plan to purchase.

Solve : I cannot access through router?

Answer»

Hello. I am a doctor and I donot have much knowledge about computers rather than basics.

My problem: I cannot access yahoo site(yahoo.com)
I have a separate router and a modem. the site works fine if i connect to modem directly. But if i connect to the router along with it I cant access the site. I can access all other sites.
I searched various sites and tried:
clearing my cache
switching off my router and modem and turning on
resetting router
disabling firewall
these are ping statistics
Ping 98.139.183.24

facing this since a month... help please
I am SORRY to hear that doc. Can you try this. Open up command prompt. You can do this by clicking on start > run or SEARCH > than type in cmd > when the black screen open type in ipconfig /flushdns and than restart your computer. Let me know if that works and if not we will do next step hello... thanks for ur suggestion.. but still no luck... pls guide me through
I am not sure what type of router you have but PERHAPS your router has that domain blocked. you can log into your router by going into command prompt by clicking onstart > run or search > than type in cmd > when the black screen open type in ipconfig /all

You want to look for the IP address for your default gateway. It should be something like 192.168.x.x. You will than need to copy that ip address and put that into your web browser. a log in screen will APPEAR by default the the username is usually depending on the manufacturer is admin and the password is usually left blank so just hit enter when you insert the username.

And in there you can find under of the settings blocked domains and see if yahoo is in there.I have a separate router and a modem.. I can access yahoo if I connect my pc directly to modem..But i cannot get it connected to yahoo if i connect it through the router and modem..I have a doubt.. Isnt that admin login for the interenet through modem? I am just clarifying it to u so that u can try to help someone DUMB like me.. Just a heads up that I have also seen horrible pings with Yahoo!

I would perform a ping to a better site for measuring response times of hardware and ISP such as pinging google

ping www.google.com and report back findings

Solve : Studdering Internet Connection?

Answer»

I recently moved and previously my internet was working fine (win7 wired connection intel motherboard).
Now when I plug into the router at my new place my connection turns on for about one SECOND every five seconds and then turns off. Plugging into a different computer the connection works fine so I'm relatively POSITIVE it has something to do with the desktop hardware or software. Since it was working earlier TODAY before I moved I would like to think that it's not a hardware issue but I'm not really sure.

Thanks in advance.I would try flushing your DNS

click on start > go to search > type in CMD right click on the cmd.exe file and select run as administrator > when the black screen pops up type in ipconfig /flushdns and RESTART your PC.Quote

I would like to think that it's not a hardware issue but I'm not really sure.
Well, I will not tell you to install the motherboard chip drivers again. No way would moving to another place destroy the drivers.

I think you NEED to contact your Internet Service Provider. Did you tell them you had moved? My guess is they did not know you had moved and the system recognized your computer and reports it has been stolen.I installed the latest drivers and flushed the DNS and it now works fine.
Thanks for the help, guys.Glad it worked

Solve : Network questions really confused.?

Answer»

Hi guys, I have a few questions I cant SEEM to find an answer for. I just bought a Dlink Print server and I was told by their tech support to SET the Print server to a "static" ip address. Even though DHCP was an option. Now I know what a static ip address is, but what I don't understand is why you would want a static Ip address for the print server over a dynamic. Is it for reliability? Like when the power goes off or something? What is the benefit? I was also told to just use the dlink software to setup the static IP and your all set. Don't you need to set this static IP up in your OS under tcp/ip as well as setting up port forwarding within your router? I am totally confused about this. Also bare with me guys, Lets say your Router assigns IP address from 192.168.1.100 through 192.168.1.150 The tech guy told me to use 192.168.1.10 for the print server, I told him it was not in the same subnet as my router and he said it does not make a difference, can someone also shed light to that, I thought all devices on your network must be within the same subnet to work? in this case all devices must end with .100-.150. Hope that makes sense.

DerickServers almost always have static IP addresses cause they're online most of the time.

It's completely possible that the Dlink software sets up the static IP address by its self and you don't need to do any setting up in the OS.

The last point SOUNDS odd, i'd have to agree with you and put the tech guys comments down to talking to too many cattle-grade users.

Have you run the setup yet? if so did you use the tech guys recommendations? did it work?

FBHave you done custom subnetting, or simply limited the range of ips PROVIDED by dhcp? by default, 192.168.1.10 and 192.168.1.100 are on the same network, so unless you have custom subnetting in place, you should be able to use that address. The other side of that coin is there really is no reason it needs to be 192.168.1.10, thoug it might make things easier if it is outside the range handed out via dhcp. Check your subnet mask. if it is 255.255.255.0 you can use the dlink rep's address with no problem. Otherwise, stick within your range.I have the dlink server working, What I would like to know is why do they tell you to use a static ip in the dlink software as oppsed to a dynamic, what benefit does it have with the print server?this might help:

http://www.fnal.gov/docs/pc/nt_at_fermilab/html/current/ntguide.b.html

Though i think for just a print server it doesn't really matter.

FBA static ip on a print server makes it easier to MAINTAIN your print settings. You can point your computers to an ip address that will never change

And a Satellite ISP of a customer I ASSIST is getting 150k download and 60k upload which is better than the 33.6k dial-up as their only other option on the mountain side without investing into some expensive microwave bridging to a HIGH speed source within view. She is ok on the 150k/60k connection but she has been spoiled by free wifi hotspots with much more bandwidth so the speed increase she noticed off the bat from dial-up to satellite she now knows is lagging badly compared to what high speed internet really is!

ip transit are the DNS servers they use, anyways a good trick to figure if the issue is with your ISP or your network is by doing 2 things.

1. go to speedtest.net and click on the green circle with the green triangle in it. Than let the test run, if it runs good than that means the issue is with your network.
2. If it runs slow direct connect a computer to your cable modem and than run the speed test again. if runs good that still points to your network if it runs slow contact your ISP.

Avast wasn't present in your first log. What's up with that? This is very important, when trying to fix computers:
Do ONE thing at a time, and don't do ANYTHING I'm not aware of!I called a friend of mine for some help during the time I was trying to fix the problem, and I told him Id done a comprehensive virus check using Norton 360. He then told me that norton was a heap of crap so I should download Avast instead.
Which one do you recommend I keep? Ive heard that Norton can be a spanner in the works when you try to do a SYSTEM restore, which could be the case for me because my system restore does not work nomatter what date I choose.I had Norton 360 and it was indeed a heap of crap.
Before that I had Norton 2003 and I thought it was the best paid Antivirus.
After getting a new COMPUTER, we took the good expectations we had from Norton and bought 360. ABSOLUTE Rubbish.

If it were me, I would keep Avast.I AGREE, but if decide to get RID of Norton, use Norton Removal Tool: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039Could you have a think about another internet problem ive been having? Whenever Im downloading something from xbox live or sky player, my internet switches off then switches back on again after about a minute. The download then resumes but then after another short period of time the internet will switch off and on again. The download will eventually complete but it would go probably 5 or 6 times as fast if my internet did not keep turning off during the download. Any idea what is happening here?Could it be something wrong with your ISP? (just throwing questions out here)

i need to know what the best wireless transmission media would be for a 1.2km distance. I'm trying to connect an office on a farm to a building that is the 1.2km AWAY. I'd prefer not to have to use a microwave link.

also what technology would i need to set up a wireless NETWORK for 10 small cottages that are all WITHIN a 200m RADIUS of our tourism office. These cottages will be sharing the STAFF internet connection which is a satelite connection as we are too remote for the 3G network.

thanks please get back to me as soon as possible

I keep getting the following error messege at startup,
Failed to connect to windows service, Windows could not connect to the system event notification service, This problem prevents limited users logging into the system as an administrative user, You can review the system event log for details about why the service does not respond.

The computer that is getting this error mess ALSO detects no networks or network card. I see them in the device manager but none function, I have reinstalled drivers for this network card and nothing changes. I have also seen a messege that the network adapter needs to be configured. Have TRIED but nothing changed. Code 31 is what comes up in that messege. The adapter is a 6T04. I have also tried restoring to a different point when everything was functioning properly and nothing changed. I have worked on the above computer before and have never had a problem just PLUGGING it into my network and getting online. The only THING that I have noticed that changed since the last time I had this computer was that a program named Safari (Browser) For apple was on the system and that it had been changed to default. I changed it back to Internet Explorer and made IE the default and uninstalled the Safari but again nothing changed. The only thing I have yet to do is to physically remove the network card and pop it back in to assure that its placed properly but thought to post here first. Your input would be soooo appreciated. Oh and the back of the network card where the line plugs into does light up.

Solve : Downloads keep stopping?

Answer»

My downloads keep stopping. I have Internet Explorer, Fire Fox, and Opera. None of them will finish downloads, with the exception of really small downloads. With opera if I stop it and resume the download it will pick up where it left off, but it stops again shortly after so I have to repeat the PROCESS over and over. programs like limewire and torrents download just fine. but if I use download managers like get-right the problem is still there. I have 2 computers running on a DSL wireless network and only my laptop has this problem. I have called my ISP they say everything in fine. I checked for spyware/viruses. I have cleared temp internet files and cache. I cant think of anything else to do, I was told to use Hijack this, but have no idea what to do after that.

Solve : Seeking best settings?

Answer»

I have a Linksys WRT54GL router that I have updated firmware to DD-WRT. So far so good but results compared to hype doesn't SEEM to match. My setup is quite simple. I have a WIRED connection to my home built computer and use the router wireless only for my phone (Galaxy S3 I-9300 and my old phone (Galaxy S I-9000) which I keep updated just in case). I have no other devices . What settings can I safely use to optimize my signal to my phone?Quote from: RudeDawg on May 20, 2013, 01:21:32 PM

What would you consider to be optimum? When a wireless signal is above a certain level, there is only small incremental improvements that can be made.
Do you experience some PROBLEMS? In many wireless home systems, the wireless PERFORMANCE is almost as good as the wired connection for Internet access. Many Internet connections never go above 10 Mbps, thus the overheard of the wireless is hardly noticeable.
What problems are you having with the wireless connection? Is the signal low, is the speed low, or is it dropping quite often, or something else?
The WRT54GL is an old device now (8 years old) and while DD-WRT is a great improvement over the original firmware in terms of OPTIONS and tweaks, there's only so much it can do.

Solve : IP tracking?

Answer»

i am sorry if this isn't the right category.
so, i've tracked someone's IP from yahoo mail, by viewing the full header of the mail. and it lead me to California, but that PERSON pretends to be from JORDAN. i don't think that she changed her IP because she's not a computer master. could it be a mistake? or is she really sending emails from California?
thank you! If a person's motivation is to mislead others as to their place of origin just like all other facets of one's profile it can be falsified. There are a variety of methods IP addresses can be altered from it's TRUE point of origin. Many people and organizations go to great lengths to provide false information in order to serve their own ends which if done are often to achieve MALICIOUS objectives. So i suppose the direct and short answer to your question could have been yes.truenorthYes, and in some cases it may not even be intentional.

Some international users use private communication services to get into the internet where good internet service is not widely available. So the IP only reflects the point where the privater service gets into the public network.

Solve : Setting up wifi two computers network sharing?

Answer»

Im trying to set up a network via wifi. There are two computers and both have a wifi card (usb). I have a wifi router i use to connect to the internet on both computers. How if so is it possible to connect both computers via this. I have tryed the shared folder set to shared on both computers and went through a little wizard but i cant see the other computers shared folder files. Help appreciated thanks. Go into each folders properties and click enable sharing also make sure users are allowed to read, write and so on in those folders, also click my computer and enter it's properties under the 'Computer name' TAB make sure both computers have the same 'workgroup' (should be MSHome) by default. Once you make the work groups the same and enabled file sharing on the folders you want these folders should appear when you click 'View work group computers'. Also if you want to SHARE all files between both machines you should click the root drive (C:) and click properties and enable sharing.

The wizard doesn't really do the job well and i can't give you step by step instructions because i don't use XP home. Thanks for the help its working fine now. Is the network secured by the routers wep key do you know to stop access to intruders?Yeah, you will need to be connected to the network to access these folders, there are more security options but these only really come in to play when you have other PEOPLE who are connected to the network but you don't want them to be able to access certain folders...
But as far as your concerned only the machines connected to your network can access your folders, so LONG as your network is key ENCRYPTED (WPA or whatever) no one else will be able to gain access to these folders.

Solve : help with network Printer?

Answer»

We currently connected a new computer to our home network. When i try to install the Network Printer on the new computer it keeps asking me for a Username and Password. I dont remember ever setting one up, is there a way to Bypass this?

Any HELP would be appreciated.Where exactly does it say this?

What Operating SYSTEM?It says this on the new computer. I GO to printer setup I get to the network printer and click on it to setup and it asks for Username and password. USING Windows 2000.A new computer using Windows 2000?The computer that has the Printer setup on it is Windows 2000. The new computer is Windows XP.I'm not sure here but any ideas what this password is for? (is there a title to it?)The title for the Username and Password is the name of our network. I dont have a clue to what they are, i dont remember ever setting one up. How do i get around this?I don't think it's possible to bypass it, I'm afraid.Perhaps try ad look on the bottom of the router. A lot of times routers come with a pre-setup username and password. Mine is located on the bottom of my router. OR if you STILL have the packaging from the router, its possible its in there or maybe you had written it down Quote from: PIERRO on August 18, 2008, 02:40:00 PM

The computer that has the Printer setup on it is Windows 2000. The new computer is Windows XP.
Are any other computers now accessing that printer? If so, what OS are they running?

Do you have that Win 2000 machine setup so that you must log on to Windows to use it?Yes I have 3 other computers accessing that printer. The other Computers run windows 2000. The printer is setup on one of those computers. The win 2000 machines do not require log in information to use them.

Solve : LAN Instalaltion Handbook - PDF?

Answer»

Here is a general LAN installation Handbook. The 34 pages cover all the basics a tech needs to know for a physical wiring of a LARGE ETHERNET system.
https://www.mita.gov.mt/MediaCenter/PDFs/1_LAN_Installation_Handbook.pdf
Attention given to cable lengths and how to handle cable.

Dated 2003, but still a good REFERENCE for anyone interested in it. Took a quick browse through it.In ten years not much has changed with Ethernet cable.
Now the thing is optical, but the entry price is very steep.
So Ethernet cable will be AROUND for AWHILE.

Solve : Why does D.N.S keep getting corrupted...?

Answer»

Hello,

I would like to know why I always have to change the DNS settings under Network Properties> IPv4 for laptops to access websites? The problem I am having is actually solved by typing in a DNS number but I want to know why it keeps happening and how to prevent it?

Thank youIdeally, you would never HAVE to do this. DHCP should not only assign an IP address but also a DNS server. If you're having this problem, make sure your router's settings are CORRECT and that your ISP isn't having issues.

Personally, I stick to OPENDNS (208.67.222.222 / 208.67.220.220) instead of relying on whatever DNS server I happen to get at the time (I switch between a few different networks, including the SCHOOL's.)

You say you "always" have to change the DNS settings. Is this in one network or many, what ISP(s) is/are included, and what OSes are involved? You mentioned laptops; does it only happen with laptops or with desktop computers too?QUOTE from: Gilgamesh21 on FEBRUARY 20, 2013, 03:35:39 AM

Solve : Linksys/Internet help?

Answer»

Hi i have a linksys wrt54g and i have one wireless COMPUTER and one that is hooked in from the linksys. When i hook my internet cable into the Internet spot on the linksys my Wireless internet dosent work but the computer that is connected directly from the linksys thru a cable gets internet fine. But when i connect the cord that runs from the modem into the first SLOT taht is not the internet slot on the Linksys and connect the cable from the computer to the linksys to the second it works fine but my internet is very slow on my wireless computer compared to my computer connected directly? Example is i am downloading something on my wireless it goes at 40kb when i have the other computer connected with the cable downstairs and its downloading at 400kb at the exact same time. When i unconnect the Computer downstairs taht is hooked into the linksys without it being wireless it goes all the way up to 400kb? Is it suppose to do this and can i SOMEHOW make it so that they both have a decent connection SPEED?Quote

Is it suppose to do this and can i somehow make it so that they both have a decent connection speed?
Nope, you cannot change it.

The only THING you can change here is how far you are away from the Wireless Router and what is standing between you and it.How come when i unhook the computer that is directly connected to the linksys without being wireless my internet speed on my wireless computer increases so much like 400kb but when i have it hooked into the router my wireless computer only gets 40kb even when my other computer is offHmmm....That is strange....Is this a recent problem? No its not recent it always happened on any router i bought.. Is there any way i can give it so it gives my wireless a better speed even with the other computer hooked upIs the other computer affected?
Is it possible you can try another router?

Solve : Specific email program needed, please advice?

Answer»

I have a SMALL LAN network containing several computers running WinXP.

Only one computer is connected to the Internet, and that internet connection is NOT being shared to others.

I want to enable email sending (and/or receiving) option for all of my computers in this LAN network (but not to enable Internet sharing itself), and for this I am searching for an email program that might "store" written emails on client machines, and then automatically send them when only one computer on this network connects to the Internet.

Is this possible, and is there any email client program(s) that might do this kind of a job?

Best regards

You did not mention if it has to read email.
Are you familiar with Microsoft exchange?

Exchange

Are you willing to add a small computer to act as a mail server? It does not have to be costly and you could PUT it in a closet.

Do you have a compelling reason to not MAKE the Internet accessible by all the computers, either via Internet sharing with the computer now connected to the Internet or by DIRECT connection by each computer?

Solve : Wireless No Wired?

Answer»

I dont know what had HAPPENED. Last week the issue had started, basically, I tried an scanned my laptop an didnt find anything. I can connect to the wireless but, when I switch it to the wired its not about too keep the internet connection. I tried changeing the cable an where it was plugged into on the router. If switching which network connections are USED for internet on a running system, I'd first of all DISABLE the wifi adapter so you dont have 2 NICs talking to the same router, and then go to command prompt and perform the following with the CAT5 cable connected to the laptop.

IPCONFIG/Release
Then

IPCONFIG/Renew

Then your system will pick up on the wired connection with the proper gateway connection to the internet through this refresh process releasing whatever IP the Wired NIC has and requesting an IP ETC from the routers DHCP.I was able to run the diagnostic TOOLS an said something was wrong with my DHCP. Sorry, I'll try that next time Dave

Solve : Internet disconnects while network still active..HELP!?

Hi there
I'm currently using wireless broadband but for some reason every minute the internet stops working, I will get page not found, so I have to wait another minute before refreshing the page. Three others are using the same wireless router and are experiencing no problems so the problem definitely lies with my laptop. Can anyone OFFER any advice or help?
Much appreciated
UmairTurn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
Power them back on.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK.

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit ENTER after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns

Restart computer, and check again.hi, thanks for the help..it worked perfectly up to now but for some reason the problems back and ive tried all the methods listed there and its not seem to be helping, any ideas?

thanks
umairWhich step was of particular help?the FIRST list of commands worked when i did it first time, then today i did all the measures you mentioned and its still not helping, the internet intermittently doesnt work...What happens, if you hardwire your laptop to the router/modem?if i hardwire the internet works fine..Start with reinstalling wireless adapter driver.how do i do that? im not sure the wireless router came with a cd...sorry for being so useless!Sorry to jump in but can I ask, are your house-mates machines closer to the router than yours? Sounds like to me that your just getting a bad signal. Is it built-in wireless adapter, or plug-in card?
What's your computer brand, and model?when i connect the laptop DIRECTLY to the wireless router it does work better but also does struggle to find a connection sometimes.

my computer is sony vaio model PCG 6E1M, the wireless is built in. i dont know why these problems are choosing to start now!Look at the sticker, and see what it says about the model:

Solve : How to enable (any) sound when Windows (XP) connets on WiFi network??

Answer»

I would like my WindowsXP to PLAY (any kind of) sound when it connects (or disconnects) from any available open Wireless network it finds (see the enclosed image at the link: http://www.dodaj.rs/f/0/P5/1e5Q1quf/wifi-baloon-question.jpg )

But I can't seem to find anything regarding this subject via Google!?

As far as I can see - everybody is complaining that they want to turn that sound OFF (usually in Windows 7), but there is no clue about how to ENABLE that sound (in Windows XP with Service Pack 1)?

In addition, please note that I have already opened Sounds in "Sounds and Audio Devices" in Control panel, found there the "System Notification", and assigned a sound for it.

But my Windows still connects (and disconnects) from WiFi network WITHOUT any sound played?! :/

Can someone please give me any clue what else I might do for it?
Is there any kind of utility program that could do this job; that is to play a WAV file when connected/disconnected from the wireless internet?Well, finaly there IS a SOLUTION: just point a new tab in my browser to the address: http://82.117.194.13:9040/listen.pls and then - whenever I loose Internet connection - I will hear it!
Couldn't be more simpler!
How no one couldn't think of this!?

Solve : let someone else use my router?

Answer»

Hi,
This is something I know nothing about. I have a speedstream router connecting 1 only win 7 computer to the internet. It works fine. Now we need to have our burglar alarm use the router to talk to the monitoring company. I thought , buy a switch, plug the computer and the alarm in and everyone would be HAPPY. The installer says I have to "CREATE a path through the router" so the company can talk to the alarm. How do I do this and is it necessary?
GeofflYou will need to set up a static IP for the device connecting to the router and then set up port forwarding. If they can give you instructions on what ports to forward etc that would help you out greatly. Otherwise if they can assist you hand on on which ports to forward etc with you navigating the router settings and them standing right next to you to assist or over phone to assist that would probably be best.

I haven't had to set up one of these alarms yet myself, only worked on older alarm systems, but it cant be any different than any other network device and port forwarding. It would be best to have a battery BACKUP powering the modem and router so that the alarm can still report back upon power outage etc. The alarm if a good one will have built in cellular communications and its own battery backup system to run for a period of time without power, to alert alarm company to home for any crooks that try to out smart the system and cut phone/cable line and BREAK in.Thank you so much for your help.

the first idea is good but little complicated...

the other two are i think about presentation.i am not doing presentation i am doing a final semester project.and these are not enough for final semester project...It is slightly curious that someone who is considering a final semester project of a BSc degree course (Hons no less!) (and THEREFORE having supposedly been immersed in a high level academic environment for 2 or 3 YEARS) should be asking for suggestions on the "Internet & Networking" section of a computer help forum, where the usual type of question is more like "Help! My router stopped working" or "What type of Cat5 cable should I buy?".

You need to refine your strategy. Have your studies not taught you anything about gathering and evaluating information in a focused way, reflecting on what you have already learned, consulting teachers and likely sources of relevant information?

For example, a quick Google search using this search term final semester bsc hons degree project networking led me to what the University of Plymouth (UK) says about their BSC (Hons) course in Computer Networks:

Quote
You will ... have a final-year project where you will utilise the practical and theoretical skills that you have gained to build or develop an artefact related to networking. This can be anything that you have an interest in, an industrial project or a project supporting the research at the University.

And the University Of East London:

Quote
Students complete a project in their final year. This is a major piece of work that allows students to choose the direction of their study, to develop their own ideas and to integrate the various subjects STUDIED. Students are encouraged to provide their own areas for this project, but there is always a battery of topics from which students can choose.

No doubt your own course literature includes such matter.

Do you see where they talk about "anything you have an interest in", "the skills you have gained", "their own ideas" and "the subjects studied"? This is telling you that the final project builds upon what you have already studied, using the skills you have (presumably) acquired. You have done the studying, not us, and you have acquired the skills, not us.

Solve : Intermittent Wireless Connection, even after restore to factory specs.?

Answer»

Hi, about a week ago I started having a problem with my wireless connection going out intermittently. The connection can only be restored after a restart. The laptop is an Acer Aspire 5750. The wireless card is internal. I've had the computer for over a year and have never had any sort of connectivity problem before last week. The other three computers on my network are having zero connectivity problems. I ran ad-aware (which I have on always for PROTECTION), malware bytes, and the microsoft malicious software removal tool. No help (though ad-aware did find one thing that needed to be quarantined). I went ahead and reformatted last night, and the problem persists (the full reformat, didn't save anything).

I'm assuming that it wouldn't be an issue with malware if the reformat didn't correct the problem. I'm not sure what to do at this point. I don't know anything about computers, but I would assume that it's some sort of hardware issue. COULD this be a bad card? Loose (do internal cards come loose)? Can I SAFELY open the laptop and clean it? Should I? Any GUIDANCE here would be much appreciated.

JGitThis is over 30-days old and figured I'd post here in case this is still a problem.

The antenna for the wifi for the laptop could pop off, but it would take a good drop of the laptop to pop the antenna connector off. There should be an access panel on the underside of the laptop that wnen removed exposes a small circuit board with a cable or 2 cables miniature coax with a button plug on the end of it. This button plug should be securely connected to the plug that is on the small network board.

Since resetting this system back to factory hasn't helped the next plan of action is to buy a small USB Wireless Network Adapter. These are inexpensive and its just a matter of installing the driver software prior to plugging it into a USB 2.0 port. And then setting up your connection. You would want to disable the INTEGRATED wifi first so that you dont have connectivity issues with the computer still trying to use the old wifi that is troubled. *This should solve the problem if it was in fact a troubled integrated wifi.

Here is a link to a USB Wireless NIC that I have used before. I used one of these to make my wifes old Celeron 2.4Ghz Dell Laptop running Windows XP Home have wifi. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833210003

Solve : my internet shows connected but nothing is connecting?

Answer»

I have a wireless adhoc between my two laptops, it was WORKING great and then all of a sudden while browsing the internet everything STOPPED loading. No webpages in any browser will show, no instant messengers will connect, and outlook wont work either. This is on both laptops, and both show that they are successfully connected locally and internet. I have one laptop connected trough usb to the broadband modem. I tried RECONFIGURING the ip address and resetting the modem, and restarting both computers. It still says connected, but it's not working. Connect it straight to the modem, bypassing router. Same thing?there is no router. Computer 1 is connected straight to the modem and computer 2 is connected to computer one through an adhoc with their wireless cardsThen, I'm not familiar with this kind of connection (if possible).
Why not to use a router?because i dont want to buy one.... my person to person network has been working fine.... but thats not the problem anyway. even when i disconnect the network and try to connect the internet DIRECTLY to just one computer it does the same thing...my network connection shows connected but nothings workingim not familiar with it! try search for another alternativesQuote from: garydeen on September 09, 2008, 05:52:43 AM

Prinsez, if the computer next to you is working, try USING their internet cable to make sure it isn't a wire problem.

Solve : Printer Not Performing Properly?

Answer»

I have a 2- computer home network. ONE computer is running WIN98SE, the other WIN2000. Both share a printer, an HP 840C, which is physically connected to the WIN98 computer. The printer is recognized by both computers as part of the network, and that it is shared.
The problem is that when I send a print job to the printer from the remote computer, it is not printed CORRECTLY. The font is always huge, and only portions of the text, or picture, are printed on each page. What do I have to adjust in order for the printer to operate properly?
TomYou'll NEED to make sure the printer SOFTWARE and driver for that printer is compatible with the computer that's giving you the issues.

In addition, make sure you CHECK the Page Setup on the offending computer...and compare those settings against the settings of the computer it is attached to.Quote from: Saviour on September 07, 2008, 11:47:22 AM

You'll need to make sure the printer software and driver for that printer is compatible with the computer that's giving you the issues.

Thanks for the advice. As you suggest the problem seems to be with the driver installed on the Windows 2000 computer. It's apparently corrupt. I'll find the correct driver and install it, and hope that will take care of things. If not, I'll ask again for help.

Solve : Wireless Access Key?

Answer»

I just got a new COMPUTER. I have two servers in my home and both have wireless security keys.
The laptop I have USED for the past two years has the wireless security key already in so accessing the server is no problem. My new computer needs to be able to access the same server but I forgot the security access key. I can use it on my one server because I KNOW that key but I don't remember it for the other server.
Is it possible to get the security access key off my computer that daily access my one server?
Any help WOULD be appreciated.

Solve : ADSL router?

Answer»

Recently I bought ADSL connection 256 mbps. when I TRIED installing the ADSL modem (Alcatel Lucent) I received a error meesage " DSL modem is already installed. To upgrade the software you must remove the current software and the run setup later" .

I am using a DELL INSPIRION laptop with MICROSOFT Xp home edition. I did not find any DSL modem installed.

Can anybody help on this. How were you connecting to the Internet prior to the ADSL?dial up....You might try rebooting the router in two different ways.

Unplug it for about thirty seconds, plug it back in, and see what happens.

The SECOND way to boot is to find the reset button on the modem, and holding that in for a few seconds, and seeing how the modem "reboots" off of that.

Let us know if you've already tried these...Follow the step by step instructions in this article to install a DSL modem

I hope this help you in SOLVING your problem.
