Solve : lost all outlook email after a system restore?

Answer»

Hello, I am not tech saavy so any help would be much appreciated. We had a power outage last night and I had to do a system restore this morning. I have a Dell running Windows 7 and Microsoft Office/Outlook 2007. The system restore wiped out my email. I re-created it but have no folders, email, etc. A previous thread said that I would find it in c:\documents and settings\...\...\... but I don't have a c:\documents and settings or c:\apps or anything. Help! ! ! !1) I deleted your post in the other thread. ASIDE from the fact it was 8 years old, please do not post the same question more than once.

2) Do a search on your system for *.pst LET us KNOW the result and we'll go from there.Thank you and my apologies, my first time on a forum. My search returned 16 files. There should be literally hundreds. It says that it is in a folder called Work contacts/Clarity Consultants (Personal Folders) but gives NOTHING for actual location. You have hundreds of E-mail accounts? PST files hold all the data for an E-mail account in Outlook.

Normally they are found in C:\Users\\Documents\Outlook Files (With being your username, of course).

What kind of System Restore did you do? Was this a Windows SYstem Restore, or a FACTORY Reset?I have c:\users\cookie but no document folder. I used Windows system restore.no, one email account, hundreds of emails in several folders.

Solve : %SystemDrive%?

*It's strange that the folder WOULD be NAMED this. But if it's on the desktop I couldn't see any reason why deleting it would cause any issues. May WANT to CHECK the contents of the folder too before deleting it, make sure it contains nothing that you may want to keep.If it "APPEARED after an error" then of course it can (and should) be deleted.

Solve : c:\progra~1carbon~1\ccw32.vxd missing?

Device won't respond ZIP DRIVE because subject FILE missing. reload

Unable to locate file in either oem compaq presaro 5630 . another win 98 and a win 98 se the installed OS did have most if not all upgrades since 1999. All gone now since hd crash missing file reported to be

c:\progra~1\carbon~1\ccw32.vxd I sure need some of that GURU help stuff Please! You have a Zip drive that won't respond on your system? Your HD crashed? What OS are you USING? Do you have an installation DISK for this Zip drive?
Does the c:\progra~1\carbon~1\ccw32.vxd error occur while windows 98 is booting?

If so, check your root directory (usually C:, or whatever drive letter you installed Windows to) for autoexec.bat.
Right click autoexec.bat and choose Edit.
Copy and paste the contents of that file here. All Zip drive drivers were 3rd party...to my knowledge none of them would be included on a Win98 CD.
You need to track down those drivers and re-install them. Why are we talking about ZIP drives here, since ccw32.vxd is Compaq video driver: http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=25851From Slobill's PM:

First Thanks to both of you.I learned from each . The problem seems to have been that file was not coppied at the first restore . The zip drive was just the first on boot up.
You were right on Broni compaq card.

Solve : JPEG images are waaaaayyyy too slow....?

Answer»

hello there...i've got a PROBLEM with jpg/jpeg images rendering or even copying...
it tends to be verrrryyyy slow
ie. too slow to open, too slow to delete,
even when installing some softwares that have a jpg image in it, it tends to get stuck when the jpg part's turn...
i've already scanned my box, run a chdsk, defrag the hd and REGISTRY, updated my drivers but still to no avail...
i had this problem once before and what i did was to reformat my hd...tsk tsk...ok. now the image processing is going smoothly but when updates for my box was installed the problem reoccured...it was M$ update..but am not sure which one is causing this problem...

i have a windows xp home edition running on a compaq presario v3000 series with a 512 mb ram, 160 gb hd...

any help would be appreciated...thank youWhen did the problem start?inzanity,

My guess is a RAM problem. Even though you have 512MB of Ram, you have too many applications running. Shut down all windows and tabs not needed. Run Msconfig and disable startup programs not needed.

Check Ram usuage with the Task Manager. Right click open SPOT on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen and choose Task Manager. Click the PERFORMANCE Tab and observe RAM usage.

A crucial.com scan will tell you what you need:

http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/

Reset Virtual memory

Clean your computer of all temp files

Scan again for virus

Clean your registry:

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/cleanup.htm

Resize your jpg images with an image editor for dimensions and byte size
or
Mail the images to yourself. Xp will resize the jpg images.
or
XP Tools has a resize option
carbon :
the psoblem started when i updated my system through M$ update... not sure which one though...

billrich :
i've TRIED what you suggested but to no avail...

this problem did not happen to me before the M$ update... i wonder if there is an undocumented bug on some of M$ update?I like how you spelled way...Try a System Restore to a few days before the problem started.yep, that did it...going fine now...the thing that worries me is that the problem might reoccur once i updated my system again.... gotta find this bug..

thanks You can make a note of the updates and install them one by one if you want to.

Solve : gateway computer running winXP wont boot up all the way?

Answer»

My bad, the error msg is "No hard drives found". Yes, I did change the BIOS to boot from disk, and the disk does load up and start installing, but after the screen where it asks you "Install winXP", the next screen says "No hard drives found"
hello,

I replaced the HD and I bought a copy of winXP from gateway, but when I put the disk in the disk drive, it appears to be WORKING, the drive spins, I see the words "Press R to go into recovery mode or Q to install a fresh copy of windows". I chose Q the first time, nothing happened the cursor just went to the next line and stayed there.

After five minutes I restarted the computer with disk INSIDE. This time I chose R, and the next screen said "Copying recovery FILES from the CD", the progress bar slowly made its way across the screen, and when it reaches the right side, the screen went blank and stayed that way.

Why isnt it installing
the hd is working, i checked it by HOOKING it up to another laptop. I had the RAM replaced. Do you think they might have put in incompatible RAM? Could that be the cause of the computer hangup.
Hello,

Just updating everyone. Problem is solved. There was some dirt in the connector to the Hard drive and it wasnt amking connection with the motherboard. I blew that out, replaced the HD. Still didnt work. I then looked at the RAM (theres two modules). I reseated the modules. Still didnt work. Looked again in the connector SLOTS, and there were some particles of god know what. Blew those out. Still didnt work. Took out one of the Ram modules to see if it that made a difference. Still didnt work. Replaced that RAM module and took out the other one. Still didnt work. So I took out both RAM modules, and replaced just one into the slot wwhere the other module was. Still didnt work. Took out that RAM chip, replaced it with the one that I had left out. Success!!!
Put the other RAM module back. Again t he computer wouldnt work. So, I guess one of the RAM chips they put in didnt work.

Anyways, its DONE
Congratulations shashgo, glad you solved your problem.

Dirt/dust problems are always the start of my troubleshooting.

Solve : indeo?

Answer»

When I try and open certain THINGS I get this message: The program you are TRYING to run requires a current Indeo codec.
To obtain a current driver that is compatible with this version of Windows, please contact the manufacturer at http://indeo.ligos.com. I have no idea what that means. I did instal a new hard drive a few months ago and am more than likely forgetting a driver, but when I go to that listed website it wants to charge me for the driver. Can someone help me out. ThanksPlease be more specific:

Quote

When I try and open certain things

Indeo is an Intel video technology and probably is needed or used by a webcam or other imaging device.

Indeo CODECS are not free, so we need to find out what programs are requesting this codec and if you actually will need it or not.

What files/programs specifically trigger this prompt when you open them?

well it will sometimes open when I try and run a DVD mostly, it tries to open when I open my video editing software, but it did it today when I was plugging in my thumb drive. I don't have a web cam on this computer. I've never had this problem before I changed hard drives. So i'm guessing i'm missing a driver I had installed before. The problem is actually with misguided video codecs it sounds like.

What program do you use to watch DVDs and video files?DLoad and try the K-Lite codec pack and see if things improve...
And supply more info...Okay it's not really the DVD viewre causing the problem. It's Windows Media Player. I have an animation a company did for my company and it will only play the audio no video on Windows Media Player. Download VLC Media Player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Try to view the video, post back here.

The problem is you don't have the proper codecs required to view the file you're trying to view. VLC is compatible with almost all codecs and comes with ffdshow which uses DirectShow to decode plenty of different video formats. So I downloaded that player, I didn't get the Inedo error but got this instead,

No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "IV50". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.

I've been able to play the video other ways in the past so i'm not too concerned, but it would be nice to have the indeo error message not show up.
What version of Windows are you running ? ?
If it's XP then INSTALL Service Pack 2 and see if it plays...it is windows XP home edition and I do have sp 2 intalled.IV50 is Indeo Video 5.0 and you'll need that codec to view the file.

Visit this link: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?strState=LIVE&ProductID=355&DwnldID=2846
It looks like it contains the codec you need, and after installing you can try to view the video in EITHER WMP or VLCMP.
If that doesn't fix it, post back here.

Your other option is to write the animation company that made the file and either ask them for a codec or ask them for a more compatible format.Quote from: patio on February 09, 2009, 10:20:08 AM

Solve : Trying to hookup 3-4 monitors for multiple work applications.. Noob?

Answer»

All man!!!! I listed the older card 8600 GTS, but the card in my PC is 8600 GT (no S) Sorry!

OK... Back to the issue at hand. I verified SLI is not enabled.

I removed all but 5 of the old nvidia v6.14.11 5827 drivers via the NFR process as NFR wouldn't DELETE them all. Even after I rebooted and verified the new driver v6.14.11 8122 was installed I tried to removed the REMAINING 5 old drivers, but no can do.

I only had the 8600 GT in the first BLUE slot when I did this.

I'm about to install the 7100 CS in the PCI-e x8 WHITE slot.. I will post shortly.
Got it working guy's.... Not completely 100% percent sure of how it finally came to gether, but I think running FNR did the trick. After running it and installing my two cards it seemed that I only needed to tweak the settings. Here's where things are.

evga 8600 GT - Primary video card BLUE slot runs the primary monitor only.

evga 7100 CS - secondary video card WHITE slot runs the second(dvi) and third(vga) monitors.

This is what I was after, but I still need to tweak the settings some more, but at LEAST I know what to focus on first.

Man!! You guy's ROCK! Thanks for all the help!Congratulations, glad we could help.

As for those stubborn old files, they shouldn't pose a problem as long as you FOLLOW that guide every time you update your video drivers. A quick note on video drivers, if they aren't broken, don't fix them; that is, just because there is a newer driver doesn't mean you should update unless:
A) You are experiencing a problem with a game or application and would LIKE to see if new drivers will fix that problem.
B) The new drivers offer a feature not available with your current drivers.

Updating video drivers when they are working for you could cause some programs that worked before to break.

Good luck with the 4th monitor and come back anytime.

Solve : Win xp Boot disk HELP?

Answer»

I am running win xp pro and I think I maid a Boot Disk but I NEED some help?>

I when into my C: drive and copyed Boot.ini file and NTL.dr file and Autodetect.exe and put them onto a floppy.

When I put it into my floppy drive and start my COMPUTER it ticks and ticks and then it bootsup so I think I did it right.

My q/a is I think this would realy be could a system disk right not a boot disk? am I right you can not make a win xp boot disk
What did I make and is this a good disk did I do it right???NTDETECT.COM, BOOT.INI, and NTLDR on a floppy will create a boot disk that might be able to boot a XP installation with a bad or missing startup file, depending on what file is bad or missing.
But honestly that boot disk can't do anything you couldn't do with a XP installation disc.

But the important question here is what do you need a boot disk for? Because a boot disk can be many things.

(And please stop deleting your threads or I'm not going to bother answering any more of your questions. It makes helping you harder and makes it impossible for other people to learn from your questions.)Thank you for getting back to me about the Boot disk.

About Telnet I was able to connect to my e mail.
open incoming.verizon.net 110 this command line did the job.

Now it says connecting and then says OK and something like MESSAGING MULTIPLYER

and when I type LIST it tells me bad command why?
Is list the command for listting all e mails? You will have to log in to your mailbox before you can list any emails.
http://www.wikihow.com/Check-Email-With-TelnetThe boot floppy set (6) is available from MS's website...
It includes the Recovery CONSOLE which is the most important tool for getting out of trouble...depending on how extensively you've fubar'd the installation.I have a Win XP PRO with Service Pack 2. C.D. that I used in acomputer I built 2. Years ago.

Now I jut got a computer 1. Year ago with Win XP PRO and Service Pack 2. Pre Loaded on it. Can I use the Win XP PRO C.D. I had from my computer I built befor just to install Win XP Cammand Consale???

The Computer I have now like I just came with Win XP on it and no C.D.
Can I use my Win XP C.D. that I have from my computer that I built just to install Command Consale???According to the info you provided ...yes.
As long as the Versions and installed Service Packs match you can use any matching XP CD.
The CD's are not tied to any machine...the COA is.

BTW installing the RC is an excellent idea and if more people did it on their machines our work here would be much much easier.....

Solve : Need to reinstall xp, but my cd drive won't run?

Answer»

Cliffs Notes: Computer needs os reinstall, can't install from any cd drive, tried multiple things before I posted here, but I am new at this.

Oookay.. here's a quick background on my situation.. I'm learning about computers and trying to get my A+ certification, so I got a second computer to work on. It was free, cause it had no harddrive. It's an AMD 1.2ghz, 512ram, now has a 10gig harddrive, an asus video card, and it's currently used to watch video on my tv.

I first installed xp sp1, and it ran fine, upgraded to sp2 and got half a dozen viruses(hello irony). Uninstalled sp2, back to sp1 now. I installed Avast antivirus(which seems to work fine on my "good" computer) and removed the viruses. Now, it freezes a lot when I try to load anything but a few .avi's . And SOMETIMES when I try to load WINDOWS and log on, the screen goes blank and the tv gets no SIGNAL from the computer(default on my tv is "unusable signal" if there's nothing connected to the input, that's what I see)

I tried to reinstall xp, but the cd wouldn't run at all, drive wouldn't recognize a disk. Uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, nothing. I left the disk in and it ran after about half an hour(forgot about it), tried to install xp, but the drive won't run after the computer reboots.

I installed an old cd burning drive(tested in another pc) and associated drivers, doesn't run either. Boot screen shows they're both recognized.

I'm lost as to what to try next..

Any ideas on what to do?You could be finding out why the PC was free. You could try opening it up and checking that all cables etc are connected firmly and the RAM & video card are seated firmly.
Lol, I'm sure I'm finding out why it was free. I've checked all of the connections, found that out the hard way the first time I tried to install memory on a pc. My best guess is that it's a motherboard issue, but I'm not expert. I'm hoping someone has an idea of what to do software-wise, before I throw in the towel on this one....Try and error can isolate some problems. Find another Power supply for some tests. A Power supply is cheaper that a mobo and CPU and a spare PS is always a good investment.

Lets suppose you know the CD-rom is good.
Assume the HDD is bad. Remove it. Floppy too.

Now get a good copy of a Live Linux CD. My favorite is Puppy. But any of the Knoppix based live-CDs will do.
Any recnt version of Ubuntu is also good

If you can boot up the Linux Live CD, the mobo is good or mostly good.
But if it will not boot up a Linux, CD, the machine is to be given to somebody you do not like very much.

If your XP install disc looks like it has scratches on it, wipe it very gently, make a clone copy with verify at 4x speed on a good machine. Sometimes that works.

THANKS! I tried a new ps, still have the same issues. I'll try another hd as soon as I can pick one up.

I'll try Ubuntu, since it's been on my to-do list, any specifics tips on how I should install it? (Also, how hard is it to set up ubuntu to an xp network, so it can share files or browse the internet? From what I've read, it looks pretty programmer intensive, which I am not, yet.)

Thanks so much!

What you should do if you want to test Ubuntu is DLoad and burn what's called the "live" .iso...
This means you boot to it and Ubuntu runs from the CD drive without installing anything.
That way you can test how it handles your hardware and connectivity etc. before installing.Right!

Ubuntu Live is so easy you just stand across the room and throw the disc at the open CD tray, and if your timing is good, the tray will catch the disc, close and it will be into Ubuntu faster that you can get another cup of COFFEE.

Well, maybe that is a little bit of hype. It does stop and ask if you speak English. And if you are in the USA and can you read a map.
LOL, I'll try the download and burn method. But my aim is pretty poor, I'd probably shatter the disc if I tried it, so I'll just gently place it in the drive..

any word on how easy it is to network? I connect to the internet through a router, to a wireless device on one computer, and then through a p2p to the "broken" computer. (so, I have one wireless device shared between two computers)Quote

Solve : Recover lost e-mails?

Answer»

Hi,

I am in deep trouble to say the least.

Today when I did a backup on my computer I made at the same time a backup of my OUTLOOK MAIL (that is what I thought anyway).

Therefore afterwards I did the most stupid thing by deleting from the hard drive the 1.6 GB ARCHIVE-file (.pst) that consisted of my Outlook personal folder including archived e-mails. But my archive file hadn’t been saved as I had thought and I had also removed it from the trash bin (which I emptied).

I then directly downloaded a FREEWARE in hope to recover my deleted .pst-file. After a little while I had succeeded to recover the file.

But when I was to import it into Outlook the program told me it was broken why I ran the SCANPST.EXE program that comes with Outlook. It “repaired” the file and I could now import it into Outlook.

But now I can only see the map structure in where all the many e-mails should be stored in but they aren’t.

I believe (or am convinced) that the e-mails must be in the 1.6 GB .pst-file SOMEWHERE. There is nothing else that can take that much space. Probably the file has been damaged so the e-mails “can’t be found”.

My question to you is, how do I get my e-mails back from that file or rather what can I do to open the file letting Outlook find the e-mails? As I wrote, they must be in there somewhere.

If somebody has come across this problem before or could help me in any way I will be most grateful!

Thanks,
CarlProbably the freeware couldn't recover your .pst file completely.

If you can shell out some money, go to a professional file recovery tool. This should get you out of trouble.

An Aliant tech. installed high speed internet yesterday. Everything works great EXCEPT I can no longer change or even display the background picture on my desktop. As soon as I disconnect the internet everything is FINE. When i reboot I see the background for about a second and it immediately returns to a blank white page. It does however display my desktop icons. Can anyone OFFER a suggestion to what is wrong. I called the telephone co. they tell me its a microsoft problem I ran a SCAN for virus etc. everything checks out OK.It sounds like you may have your Active Desktop enabled. Try disabling it.

From Microsoft:

To enable the Active Desktop, right-click an empty area on the desktop, point to Active Desktop, and then click View As Web Page (a check mark appears). To disable the Active Desktop, click View As Web Page to clear the check mark.

Solve : Winlogon issue??

Answer»

Apology accepted.
Go to my link. It's very well written.
You just need some time to read it carefully.I actually found the file that is not running.
Location
\INI\system.ini\BOOT\SHELL
Path
SYS:Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinlogonWhat do you mean by not running? How did you find out?I kept looking at the FILES that were autostarting each time I boot up my other COMPUTER and they are all the same except on one PC I have that SYS:...... file and on the other I dont.I wouldn't play that way.
You can try....
1. If you have Windows CD, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp

2. If you don't have Windows CD...
Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free IMGBURN: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp, starting below this picture on page 1:

If the above doesn't work, RUN repair installation.the windows repair should fix the issue. an issue you *could* fix manually- but it's LIKE you have a magic wand that can fix almost any car problem and yet insist on replacing the head gasket yourself...

Solve : uninstall vista and install xp?

Answer»

I still use xp home but my friend has 1 yr old toshiba with vista. He is old guy and is having problems using vista(I think its 1st version with many bugs). He wishes to REMOVE vista and install copy of xp. I have copy of xp home version 2002 that came with a cpu I purchased from custom shop. I think they loaded a copy and GAVE me another (still sealed in plastic and certificate is one number higher than one stuck on my cpu). I am curious if I could load this copy on my friends pc. Is this possible? Should I format C to remove vista and then load xp from the disc? Am I asking fro trouble? Any comments or direction would be helpfull. Quote

He is old guy and is having problems using vista(I think its 1st version with many bugs).
Umm, what bugs? And, there is no "1st version" unless you mean Vista that hasn't been updated with SP1 (Service Pack 1) yet. Even without SP1, Vista did not have many bugs.

Was he familiar with Windows XP before using Vista? If not, he'll probably find it difficult, also. In other words, he would BENEFIT from some computer training.

Based on what you said about the XP disk - "certificate is one number higher than one stuck on my cpu" - you have, I have the impression you could LEGALLY load it on his computer. It could be loaded under a dual-boot configuration, meaning both Vista and XP would be installed on it and either could be used when the computer is started. However, that might just be more confusing for him.

So, you could format C to remove vista and then load xp from the disc. I presume his Toshiba has a recovery partition which would allow reinstalling Windows Vista. I think I'd want to verify that before formatting drive C and installing XP. Vista came loaded on his computer probably with service pack 1. The main bug is printers. He downloaded adobe reader for a REScheck program(energy audits for building envelopes). Vista keeps telling him to load adobe which he has but it still will not print.
He has been an XP user for years. Vista is like teaching old dog new tricks which is why I offered my only XP version. Dual boot config sounds like a good option. How confusing can it be? Click one or the other icon at startup? Does dual boot require format C or just load XP CD with Vista running?
He does have Vista recovery disks from his original purchase. Is that all he needs if XP does not load or should he make sure to have recovery partition?
Thanks for imput. Quote from: hurl59 on February 09, 2009, 06:19:32 AM

No, don't format C. Here's a guide: How to dual boot Vista and XP (with Vista installed first) -- the step-by-step guide with screenshots

Since he has Vista recovery disks, no need to worry about having a recovery partition. However, I suggest you verify he has Vista recovery disks before proceeding. It's become common practice by manufacturers to only provide a recovery partition on new systems, meaning they don't provide recovery disks on CD or DVD.

I agree a dual boot would be a good option. He would have XP, which he is familiar with, but also be able to look at Vista and gradually get more familiar with it.Great imput! I think I have enough info to hang myself Will let you know how we do. Thanks again

Solve : PC Keeps restarting, wont go to safe Mode or logon to windows?

Answer»

Hello!
I have two HP desktop PC model: (Vectra VL420 MT) bit old, they are booth running windows XP.
resently they just stoped working. When i swicth them on, it gets to the stage where it says Microsoft Windows when the welcome screen is about to come it just restarts. I treid to go to SAFE mode, it also restarts when i press enter.

I treid changing HDD with new ones still RESTARTING, took out the CMOs battery for a while still no success.
I treid to install windows, when it gets to the option press any key to boot from the CD, i press enter and it just restarts. Dont know what else to do. Please Help Strip the system of everything but the motherboard / video / RAM. Boot the system. Do you POST? If so, start adding one component at a time, starting with the keyboard, mouse, etc., until the system fails. Usually the last component installed is the culprit...though not always.

Alan <>< Thanks for posting, i did just as you said, removed everything, just left the Graphic card, HDD and the keyboard. Started the PC it tried to boot into windows, but IR restarted again, tried to go to safe mode same thing.

Please keep posting.Do you have onboard motherboard video, that is, separate from your graphics accelerator card?
HP shows that the VectraVL420 comes with an ATi Rage 128 Pro or Ultra PCI graphics card, but doesn't specify whether there is motherboard video.
If possible, use motherboard video instead of the PCI/PCIe card and remove the PCI/PCIe card.

Remove the HARD disk.

Try to boot from the Windows XP Install CD.Tried another PSU ? ?
Re-applied Thermal paste ?

Thermal Paste Guide

The above doc is in .pdf format so DLoad and install Foxit Reader...No there is no onboard motherboard video, it's using the ATi Rage 128 Pro or Ultra PCI graphics card. Disconnected HDD, connected the DVD/room booted from the Windows XP Install CD. Got to stage where it says "Setup is trying to Inspect your computer configuration." It then restarted, i will try to apply some thermol past as suggested

Solve : Help! computer shutting down after only a few minutes?

Answer»

my son's computer has recently started shutting down after being on for just a few minutes. Could this be a power problem overheating and shutting the comp down? Because when I try to restart the comp, it comes back up but after a shorter time before, it shuts off. Any Help?

btw, the comp is less than two years old and it runs windows xpMy first guess would be that the computer is overheating, and shutting itself off. Open up the case and look at the fan on the CPU, see if it's spinning when the machine is on.

You can also try to spin the fan with your finger (while it's off). If it stops pretty quickly, it's probably time for a new fan.

Go into the BIOS when you turn your computer on, there should be a section in there that tells you what your computer's temperature is at. Do this right after it shuts itself off and let us know what it says.my computer keeps doing the same thing, and my fans both run perfectly FINE and it still shuts down after a short PERIOD of time, sometimes even before the desktop starts UPAS Anodoin said, the problems POINT to an overheated PC. Get a temp reading from your BIOS as instructed, and probably surprise yourself.

PC cooling is critical, and an uncooled modern high PERFORMANCE processor can melt in about 10 seconds.

If you get a high temp reading, I would strongly suggest that both of you invest in new CPU heatsinks w/ high speed fans and a high quality thermal compound to ensure a good pathway for heat to spread and escape.

If you need help with choosing or installing these, just post here.

Thanks and good luck.Well the OP has left the building so we'll wait to see if he returns.

Solve : need help purging the part of my computer that identifies me.?

Answer»

i have dealt with a webcam company on the internet, and they CUT me off. I am able to get back on, only by either restoring my pc to factory settings, or by going to a new user, and punching in a new e-mail address. I have purged my computer of all traces of their software, including cookies and browsing history, but as soon as i re-download their product, their software instantly identifies me as the original poster (who they cut off). So how are they identifying me? Obviously, restoring the pc must eliminate a tag that their software uses as an identifier... And this is before i even give my e-mail. Thanks for any help., You will need to CHANGE your service provider...
What the heck did you do to tick them off ? ?to patio... ahh... i posted a naked picture of myself... it can't be the ISP as i go through a satelite.. so even though I've restored my pc to factory settings, it's always gone through the same isp, (even when i've managed to reconnect to their service), so it must be SOMETHING else.webcam company is cutting you off of the internet?
That would be the first case ever!no, the webcam company didn't cut me off the internet, just their website. Why do you have to go there?well you broke their Terms of service so they banned you basically. I think that's out of the scope of what we can help with.Funniest thread of the month!

Too bad, it's John, otherwise we could have asked for a link I read that and thought... "too much information"...

That's like saying, "well, my computer isn't booting up. Am I supposed to wear pants for this?"

not to go into too much detail but the software is likely gathering hardware IDs and MAC ids and the like and comparing it to banned accounts on their server.

Or just a simple IP BAN- neither of these is worth your effort to circumvent, since I'm sure there is more then one "webcam company".
Quote
Why do you have to go there?
I'm gonna answer my own question...
Probably, he wants to post another naked picture actually, i'm just curious what the company uses as an identifying tag. ...it's got nothing to do with my isp... And naturally, i can find another webcam outfit... but i'm just curious...

ie: "what" gets eliminated when you reset your computer to factory settings ? ...the thing is, if you elininate all cookies, and all traces of their software, how is the company still able to identify me. ...remember... when i RESTORE the computer, nothing is changed... i'm still reconnecting through the same isp... nothing is different.Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 10, 2009, 12:19:54 AM

Solve : Dell with Windows XP stuck in safe mode?

Answer»

We recently had a message on our Dell laptop indicating that we had a Winsock error. My wife ran a program called Winsock XP Fix from PCWorld.com. The computer subsequently froze up and when rebooted, came up in Safe mode. I TRIED restarting and pressing F8 to get to the advanced startup screen, but it will not let me get out of safe mode. The icons anwindows also appear to have been enlarged for some reason as well.Try RUNNING the winsock fix while in safe mode...
Get It Here...
The enlarged icons are normal as Windows only loads GENERIC drivers for safe mode.
After running the fix re-boot.The only problem I have with that is that she only ran the program instead of saving it. I am unable to get on the internet with the computer, so I cannot access it anymore. Thanks!I also wanted to let you know that I have Vista on the computer, not XP.DLoad it on another machine and throw it on a flash drive...Will it work on Windows Vista?
Yes.Thanks!I managed to get the computer online and ran the program successfully. When prompted to reboot, I did so and the computer STILL starts in safe mode. Any suggestions? Here's one thing you can try for the stuck safe mode:

while you're booted in safe mode, bring up the task manager (ctrl+alt+del)
select file->NEW task (run) and type in
msconfig
check normal mode and OK. restart the PC.

Solve : Computer restarting without warning?

Answer»

Flakey PSU ? ?It looks like a possibility, but with that you'll have to visit computer shop.Oh, I didn't see your reply, patio I'm not sure what the term "Flakey" means. I assume it means faulty.

I have a spare plug for a disk drive. On this plug the 5V rail measures 5.13V and the 12V rail measures 12.3V. These appear o/k to me. Unless it is intermittent. I will leave the voltmeter on one of them to see if there is any variation.

I attached the voltmeter to the 5V rail and waited for a crash then attached it to the 12V rail and again waited for a crash.

In each case, I was sitting at the computer when the crashes occurred. The voltmeter needle didn't move or drift in any way on either rail. I understand there are other supply rails from the power supply, but I can't get to those.

Back to the mother board. How do I test this?
I'm not sure if you're having the same problem but I USED to experience the SAMETHING with my PC when I STARTED playing CS:S. In my case it was the video card that failed once out of so many times while trying to launch the game. Try a different video card if you have one (that is if you're using external video card) see if that helps. In the end my video card just fried eventually and I had to buy a new one.I had a video card to drive my LCD screen. That was the first thing I suspected so removed it some time ago. Now using the motherboard video. Crashing the same as before.

Still on the mother board. Is there a way to check it?Quote from: Frank on February 06, 2009, 10:27:21 PM

The only reason these measurements mean nothing is because it's not under load at the time...
Borrow a known good PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there. The computer was running at the time I was measuring the 5V and 12V rails. So these rails were under load. However, I am not sure if these rails are the same as those on the mother board itself.

Therefore, I agree, the only sure way to prove or disprove that the power supply is faulty is to replace it. I will try to do that tomorrow and get back with the result.
ThanksI have some news to report.

As stated before, I run this machine 24/7 so the power supply, HDDS and mother boards were always warm. Yesterday, I turned the machine off and got sidetracked for an hour. Then I tried to REBOOT the computer to find that it would continually reboot at around 3 to 5 second intervals. As I pondered as to what was happening, for about 5 - 10 mins, slowly it would boot into windows further and further before rebooting each time. In the end, after about 10 mins it booted fully and stayed running as used to, rebooting at random. I turned the machine off for one hour again to see if the above action repeated. Yes, it did.

I picked up the machine, took it to the computer shop and told them the story. They replaced the power supply and booted fully straight away. Took it home turned it on and worked o/k. It has run overnight without rebooting, so, I am pretty sure it's fixed.

Glad it wasn't the mother board after all that.
Thank you all for your help.Good News...stop by anytime !

Solve : Computer shuts down instantly trying to re-load windows xp. Really weird issues.?

Answer»

Ok.. So here it is.

I've used UBCD, Hiren's, and ERD. I've used multiple hard drives and even ran memory tests. Everything passes.

The computer will stay on while I use the above aforementioned cds and let me run tests all night long without powering down.

When I boot it from my windows xp cd to reload windows however it will go through loading the drivers and right as it goes to load up the screen to start the install it powers down INSTANTLY. I've also used multiple windows xp cds.

As a note.. I've also removed the batter and tried it like that, but it's always the same. I've FIXED and repaired probably hundreds of computers and have YET to ever come ACROSS this problem. It really has me stumped. Any suggestions would be awesome.

The only other thing I can think of is that it is some kind of power problem and that piece of hardware causing the problem is only initiated when windows xp goes to load up but even ERD Commander is like a mini windows so I would assume it should have done the same on load, but it does not.

Where are these "multiple" Windows CD's from ? ?
Are they all marked with a Sharpie ? ?Quote from: patio on February 11, 2009, 01:28:40 PM

Solve : Reinstall of XP?

Answer»

My XP sp2 is not working properly. The only way to USE it is in the fail proof mode. I could FORMAT the partition and BEGIN again from zero, but I have a lot of software installed and would not like to loose that. I have been told to REINSTALL the OS on top of what is there, no previous formatting.

Can this be safely done? Any SUGGESTIONS?
you could try a repair

all of your software should remain intact

Solve : I have to disable firewall every time I want to connect from 2nd pc?

Answer»

Hi, this isn't a huge issue, just a minor annoyance: When I start up my second computer, I can't access the internet unless I go to the primary computer, disable the firewall for the connection to the second PC, and then I can GET on the internet. The weird part is that I can then enable the firewall and I can access the internet fine, even if I close the internet browser, or load a different one.

Both have xp, primary has sp3, secondary has sp1. would that be the reason?

How do you have the permissions setup on the 2nd machine ? ?YEah, as far as I know, unless there's another way to set it up. I went through network connections "properties" tab..Both machines in the same Workgroup ? ?Quote from: patio on February 02, 2009, 08:14:29 AM

Both machines in the same Workgroup ? ?

Yup, but I had both machines in the workgroup and then had to readd the secondary after I reinstalled WINDOWS(this was a while ago, and I can't remember if the problem was present before I reinstalled windows, but I don't think so. Not 100% on that, though). Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, been ill.Feel Better...
If Windows was re-installed on either machine you have to set the Network up from scratch again...Quote from: patio on February 09, 2009, 09:51:32 AM

Solve : Windows XP Media Edition?

Answer»

I have the Media Edition of WINDOWS XP. I want to create a longer SLIDE show, but the max is about 45 minutes. Is there any way I can join together multiple 45 min lengths into one continuous show?First of all, how are you making the slide show?A series of pictures in the bottom at the timeline. There's a place on top where it shows thumbs of the imported prints and then you drag them down to the time line.
There's ANOTHER place where you can view the thumbs and put transition effects in.What program are you using to build the slideshow? (Windows Movie Maker??) Yes.I didn't know Windows Move Maker had a limit.

Have you made the pictures SMALLER? (time-wise)

WHat are you computer specs? (HARD drive capacity, hard drive free space, RAM, Processor, OS)

Solve : emachine xp, new HDD, problems restore disc?

Answer»

emachine T2984. DVD-Rom drive, cd drive, amd. It RUNS XP home edition. If you need any more specs I can list them. Heres the problem. Hard drive failure. Nothing of importance within the HDD anyway. I have the restore DVD disc. I put in another HDD same capacity, 80g, that was wiped clean and formatted before I placed it into the emachine. Now, I changed the boot order to boot from the DVD, it does not see the restore DVD. I have already called emachine but they said to contact microsoft well what the heck is microsoft gonna say. Its like going in circles. Ok, so, I can plug in my external dvd drive per usb and will see the restore disc and its contents but when you run the restore the disc is pointing to R: which reverts back to the original dvd in the tower. I have place a dvd drive on top of the unit basically replaced the dvd drive. Now I can run the restore disc, and obviously it SEES itself, I can see the ghost files on the disc and can run ghost and load files onto the hdd first the gho file then the 001.ghs file then the last ghs file. when it REBOOTS, it will come up to the safe MODE options, no matter what you pick it loops off because of a blue screen error. I cannot set an option for the blue screen not to reboot in CMOS. so anyone help me out here. its like its loading but will not load correctly. Is there a basic step by step to set up a new HDD to run a restore disc and reload. from what I can tell there was not a hidden partition on this emachine. I can say that tech support with emachine was not helpful at all.

thanks Viper12
