Solve : Two computers - one cellular modem?

Answer»

Hi,
I want to connect one computer to the Internet using a USB CELLULAR modem, and then connect ANOTHER computer to the first one (cable/wireless) so both can be connected to the Internet.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks!
AdiThe best thing you can do is buy a broadband ROUTER. You basically take that broadband card, hook it up to it, and then can SHARE it with multiple devices. Works like a regular router. Here's an example:

Why do you need the cookies? They're not used much except for remembering passwords for sites.Well there is one game I play that holds all the info via a cookie so I don't want to lose that.
If you backup everything in the AppData folder to a flash drive, and then paste it back after the re-install, your cookies will still be there.

But, you'd be better off backing-up everything before re-installing.Quote from: kpac on May 31, 2009, 11:15:01 AM

Unless some file is causing troubles, making the OP want to reinstall...so basically back up everything that you would WANT.Quote from: kpac on May 31, 2009, 10:34:16 AM

Solve : Monitors have quit working for windows XP but not for Linux?

Answer»

I switched one of my monitors to a older computer while my newest one was still on. When I FINISHED and tried to switch the monitor back it was no LONGER reading it. So I tried restarting it and SWITCHING places on the connection to the computer. Now neither one works in windows but they work just fine in Linux.

I have a intel duo 2.66 Ghz and a nvidia 8800 graphics card and run off an nvidia motherboard.

I appreciate any help you can give. Are you able to see anything at all when you turn on your computer with both monitors plugged in? Are you able to see the BIOS version (screen that pops up right when you turn on the computer)?

Can you see anything with only ONE monitor plugged in?You unhooked them with the power on ? ?Yea, when it boots up I can see everything up to the windows LOADING screen. After the screen everything goes black.

Yes, I unhooked them while the power was on. I was trying to get some OLD files from an old computer and only have one mouse and keyboard between the two. So one computer has to already be on for be to transfer files.I did try the one monitor plugged in approach and its still no go.

Solve : Help me..?

Answer»

Hi,
Recently i downloaded AVG from some website into my new computer ( Windows XP).
AVG told me that i had some kind of virus in my computer and ask if i wanted to delete it and i did so. Soon i shut off my computer. When i went to turn it on again, everything was normal until the part that needed me to choose an account and login using that account. I typed in my password and it logged me in but before i can see my icons, it logged me out. I had only went in 1 second and it logged me out already. I tried using safe mode but it doesn't work. It will just bring me to the login page, after i try to login, i logs me out automatically.I'm using my mother's laptop to post any message as my computer cannot even get into the account at all. I don't have the reboot disc either..
Someone please help me..
Thanks.Disconnect from the internet, disable AVG and all other anti-virus programs.

Reboot and see if the problem is still there.

If problem is still there: System Restore to a DAY when all was well. ( start, All programs, accessories, System Tools and click System restore.)

When you reload an anti virus program make sure it is the real McCoy.

Good Luck

p.s. You might need to use the repair option of the the XP installation disk. How to reboot? And i cannot even get into the start screen. the furthest i can go is the login screen..Do you have Windows XP CD?I don't think so... I cannot remember..Is it just your account? Or do none of them work?
Can you get into safe mode? None of them work. I have 2 accounts and both cannot login. Safe mode doesn't help..If you have Windows XP CD...

1. Boot from the CD.
2. When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts. Select the repair or recover option by pressing R:

3. You'll find yourself at this screen:

4. Once you are at the Recovery Console you will be given at least one choice of Windows INSTALLATIONS. Normally the choice you want is the number 1 choice. Click the number 1 key at the "top" of the KEYBOARD and click enter.

NOTE: at this point your numbers to the right of your keyboard are turned off. If you insist on using these keys for your numbers remember to hit the Numbers Lock key before clicking a number over there or your computer will automatically reboot and you will have to wait through the previous steps to get back to the console.

5. You will be given a message asking for the administrator password. Unless someone or something has messed with your computer there is no password so you just click the Enter key.

6. This will bring you to a prompt that says:

C:\WINDOWS>

7. Type:

cd \

Press Enter

Note: between "cd" and "\" there should be a "blank space" otherwise the command won't work

8. The prompt should now say:

C:\>

9. Type:

cd system~1\_resto~1

Press Enter.

Note: If it gives an error "Access Denied" while accessing the folder, follow the method below

Type: cd \

Press Enter

Type: cd windows\system32\config

Press Enter

Type: ren system system.bak

Press Enter

(note the spaces between ren and system, and then between system and system.bak)

Type: exit

Press Enter

now the computer should restart, then follow steps 1-6

10. Type:

dir

Press Enter

NOTE: When you hit enter it will list all the restore points folders like "rp1", "rp2" we have to see the LAST restore point to copy the file from a RECENT backup. If the restore points have more than one page then you have keep on hitting the key to view the last restore point folder.

NOTE: It is a good rule of thumb to choose the files from the restore point folder which the second to the last one.

11. Type:

cd rp{with the second to the last restore point number }

Press Enter

Example: cd rp9. if rp10 is the last restore point

12. Type:

cd snapshot

Press Enter.

NOTICE: Now the command prompt will look like this:

c:\system~1\resto~1\rp9\snapshot

Note : restore point 9 assumed for clarity of the content.

13. Type:

copy _registry_machine_system c:\windows\system32\config\system

Press Enter

14. Type:

Exit

Press Enter.

Final note : If the above procedure won't solve the problem, repeat all steps, but in step 13 type:

copy _registry_machine_software c:\windows\system32\config\software

Alternatively, select different restore point.

If you don't have Windows CD...

Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

Follow steps 3 - 14.

Did you upgrade the RAM? If so you more than likely need to upgrade your BIOS. What kind of computer do you have?

I've never seen this either...the BIOS recognises new RAM.
If it doesn't then it's either the wrong RAM or faulty. Some makes and models (mainly Dell, but others as well) Bios do not recognize new memory. It is weird but it does happen. Lets look at the Dells for just a second; their A04 Bios specifically will bluescreen during the installation of an OS if you have updated your memory. When you load up their newest A12 Bios the OS will load up without error. When running diagnostics on the memory everything always appears fine becuase there is nothing wrong with the memory. On some computers you can install the memory on a working OS and it will work fine until you try to install a new OS.

When I FIRST ran across this problem it took me weeks to figure out what was wrong and then I found to update the Bios and that fixed it. But it has appeared to more common than one would think. I have fixed computers that others have called dead, just by upgrading the Bios.Hi!

When you said you upgraded to Vista, did you mean that you bought a new computer with Vista on it or that you had an existing computer and installed Vista on it.

If you bought a new computer with Vista installed on it and it's still under warranty, I'd be pretty hesitant to go back to XP. I was told by Dell about 2 MONTHS ago when I bought a computer from them in the outlet store preloaded with Vista that changing the OS would void my warranty. It may make no difference to you or you might already know about this, but figured it couldn't hurt to bring it.

P.S. I absolutely despise Vista. I will probably reinstall Win XP the day my warranty expires.

Solve : very strange boot problem?

Answer»

Hi, on booting into any of 4 accounts on the computer, the My Documents folder opens up. On one account it opens twice, the others only once. I have looked in start up on the start menu and it is not there. I have checked ms-config but don't see anything there about that folder opening up. This has happened in regular and safe mode and in restricted and full access accounts. Once the folder is closed the computer behaves normally, it is just driving me nuts trying to figure out why it opens in the first place. Any thoughts?

Windows XP sp3, Optiplex 620

ThanksI ASSUME you mean that one or two instances of Windows Explorer are launched, and each is displaying the contents of My documents.

Please note that If instances of Windows Explorer are open when the computer shuts down, then the O.S. remembers them and resurrects them when it next starts-up.

The O.S. remembers this sort of thing in the User Profile of the user operating the P.C.

If a particular profile opens with two instances, that profile will always open with those two profiles until you close or launch another instance before shutdown.

If that profile opens with a different quantity from your last shutdown, that probably indicates another user (or hacker) has logged into the account and changed things when you were not looking.

Regards
Alan
Once you're logged on, check to see if the "Restore previous folder windows at logon" box is checked from within the "View" tab of the "Folder Options" window. If so, uncheck it and see if that resolves your issue for the current user profile.

To check:
o Open an "Explorer" window
o Access "Folder Options..." from "Tools" PULL down menu
o Access "View" tab of Folder Options window
o LOOK for "Restore previous folder windows at logon" in bottom half of "Advanced settings:" section.

Let us know if that resolves the issue.

Ok, SORRY for not getting back sooner, been a little busy getting school ready for the summer.

Alan_br - no I don't mean Windows explorer is open and it is displaying the my documents folder. Double click on your my documents folder and that is what is opening up. That is different than if you opened up my computer, right clicked and selected explore. The accounts did not always do this, only recently did it start. I don't think a hacker is logging onto the machine just to look at the documents of teachers.

dahlarbear - I will try your process and let you know how it goes. These are in the teacher's lounge and while there are some very computer savvy teachers the majority are happy if Word and their email work and they can print. Is there any way beside what you propose that could make the my documents folder open on start up?
I checked the folder options and the "Restore previous folder windows at logon" box is unchecked. My guess:
You either have a corrupt entry in the registry or a corrupt system file.

1) Run sfc ( system file checker ) to fix bad system files. start, run [ sfc /scannow ]. Insert the XP installation disk when sfc asks for it.

2) Clean the registry at the free MS site:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/cleanup.htm

3) The XP installation disk has a repair option

4) Sometimes XP will correct the problem with a complete shutdown,
unplug from the wall, wait 30 seconds, plug back in and reboot.

Apparently there is. See Computer opens to My Documents

Toward the bottom of the above link, there's a link to http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts [...] sopens.htm which purports to automatically correct the registry entry if you don't want to do it manually.

Also Two 'My Documents' folders open at every startup of Windows XP ProIf that doesn't work, you could try renaming the profiles to "PROFILE.bak". PROFILE being the name of the existing profile. Then once you log back in it should recreate the profile. I recommend renaming it because then you can still get the data you need to the profile if the problem is solved. If it does not, then you could just delete the ".BAK" and the profile will be restored.

-HoFLok, tried renaming the winlogon in the hkey_local_machine... and checked "load" under hkey_current_user... and neither one solved the problem. I went to sysinternals and downloaded Autoruns but did not see an instance where the My Documents folder was slated to run on logon. I'm sorry i was a bit unclear. I meant under "C:\Documents and Settings\" ... just change the profile to "username.bak" and then log out and log back in as that username.

Cannot copy to flash drive..computer doesn't recognize the USB drives (PROBABLY CAUSE it's in SAFE mode??

Any help would be appreciated!!

Jenniferfirst of all, if you run SAFE mode with NETWORKING, then you have connection to the internet and therefore, you can email the said documents to yourself and just download the files on the other computer you have.

and I wonder why you need to be consistently running your windows 98 in safe mode? does normal mode have some problem?Hello,
Thanks for replying...

I have a network (peer to peer) , but I am not running this computer on the network..

I have a 70 year old MAN working part-time for me....
His computer knowledge is ZILCH....but he knows how to type !!

Therefore, (since I'm too cheap to buy a new computer) i just let him type his notes on the "dinosaur" (as we call it)...

Thanks!
Jennifer

Go to the website of the usb flash drive manufacturer and download the drivers for Windows 98. Save them to a floppy disk, install them from the disk into the old machine. Now the old computer will recognize the flash drive and you can move your documents.

Solve : cant read old documents in my old hard drive?

Answer»

please help I have tried all I know to OPEN my old drive on my new computer I can bring up everything, all the pictures are good and the same but all my documents are symbols, not words. I tried to open with wordpad but they were created on word and it doesnt GIVE me that choice ene though i have word on this new one i hope that isnt too confusingLaunch WORD and use the File menu Open etc to select your file and Open the document.

If that fails you have a problem I cannot advise upon.

If that succeeds it shows you have a good document,
and the problem is probably due to the Windows "File Associations" needing correction so that Windows will properly determine from the file extension what application should open it.

Alan
Try right-clicking the file/choose "open with" / choose M$Word.

Alan <>< Hi

Sorry, I disagree because on my system the "Open with" option is chaotic.
The "Open With" provides :-
3 options for a *.doc file
2 options for a *.lst
6 options for a *.txt
no "open with" for *.bat
no "open with" for *.cmd
no "open with" for *.odt
no "open with" for *.ods

These chaotic options are SOMETHING to do with Windows knowledge of the various applications that claim relevant capabilities.
This knowledge is probably independent of the "File associations" knowledge,
but any sort of "Windows knowledge" can be mistaken at the best of times,
so if File Associations is trashed the "open with" options could be trashed.

n.b. of the last 2 extensions, Windows knows nothing, and I like it that way.
It knows nothing because *.odt and *.ods are Open Office documents,
and I have Portable Open Office "installed" on a non-system partition,
so my METHOD is the ONLY fail-safe technique I know off.

Alan
I was addressing 'mustloveparrots' issue, not yours. This solution has worked in the past many times.

You are wrong. I have no issues.

Your solution will often work, but sometimes it will fail.

It fails on my system.

"Open With" data is part of file association data, but it definitely is a bit convoluted. Thankfully, I recently added the ability to enumerate the items that would appear in the menu from my File library.

Basically, it all starts in the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\"

within the OpenWithProgIDs and OpenWithList Keys there (if present)

For OpenWithList, the key is the "MRUList" key, which stores a character sequence. the other values in the key are loaded into the Open with menu in alphabetic order.

The Application Executable names are easily converted to full names of the program with some calls to the version API- this is what my program does, and I believe explorer does this as well.

The "OpenWithProgIDs" entry lists other "ProgIDs" that need to be consulted. for example, with a default Windows install, a .txt file's "progID" is "txtfile". the default value of the "extension" key, such as HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt, will have a default value set to that extensions progID. so HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\txtfile can contain all the relevant shell extensions and association data for any number of different files- such as if HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.log had a default value of txtfile, it's association data would become txtfile.

It's a long and convoluted process, since there are often a number of entries here, but the end result can be pretty neat, with a few tricks with VERSION and the extraction of the program icons:

In this case, I have selected JPG files.

Alan,
I'm glad you don't have a problem with your system. That's great! Unfortunately many folks do have this kind of problem. In that case I proposed a solution that has worked many times for me. And you are right, sometimes it doesn't work.

Sadly, my "optimizations" have come from constant use. For example, While programming in VB6 I often unconciously (I'm serious- it's completely autonomic) go Alt+F, press down 4 times fast, enter. This the Save command. I've caught myself during this even though no changes have occured since I last did it. But it has surprised me a few times when VB6 unexpectedly crashed due to my insistence on using tricky APIs- I often lost no code or at most a few lines. Quite REWARDING in a way.

a Long time ago I USED Ctrl+S, and It wasn't long before I regretted it. It only saved the active file, not my ENTIRE project.

Solve : Network Usage on Windows?

Answer»

I have been finding that at some times during the night, I haven't been able to stream Youtube videos in HD PROPERLY. It has been STOPPING and starting.
I usually get 10Mbit internet at all times.
I have Netmeter running all the time and I noticed that EVEN when I wasn't watching a video, it could still be using 500-600Kb/s (bytes, not bits).

I have posted a screenshot of one of these times including a net-monitoring program which shows some off ip address.
I'm not sure what to make of this... Is it just some program downloading updates or something more sinister??

Thanks for any help and specs in sidebarOk you do know that youtube is based on seeders yes? Your not downloading of a site but other people. They may have TURNED there computers off!!you tube is not based on seeders...Ok sorry BC I thought you downloaded off people not a site. What happens when you download?youtube stores the videos on a server

Anyway, youtube is not the problem - it's just the reason why I spotted the bandwith problem i.e. something using alot of bandwith even with no p2p program or browser etc openDo you have any other computers on the same network? If you have wireless, is it protected so only you can use it?There are 2 other computers on the network and they are wireless. I have WPA encryption on the network.
oh crap, i just realised that I havent posted the screenshot!!

As you can see in the screenshot, netmeter is showing the usage of my network adapter.
This was taken with no browser or p2p programs open

[attachment deleted by admin]If it means anything, I've got Netmeter too.

Could Windows Updates be running? Any P2P software enabled?
What about remote-control software?I was thinking it might be a program updating or windows update but there was nothing I could think of and it definitely isn't Windows Update.
No P2P programs running, I checked b4 I took the screenshot.
Any ideas on the IP address that is shown on the network monitoring program? Is Asher-PC the name of your computer, or any other computer in your network? That's meWell, check it out for yourself.

http://74.125.4.35/

Sure did surprise me....Yes I did try that b4 but i thought it must be a mistake....
Weird isn't it?well, if you want to find out what program is connecting to google, you can use TCPView which displays the executable MAKING the connection.

Go to Task Manager > Processes, and see how many svchosts are running.

Solve : Somero's freezing related problem?

Answer»

A while back, my Dell laptop went on a streak of failures. Several of them happened to be your exact ISSUE. First, it was the memory causing random BSoD's/freezes. Then, it was the hard drive. Lastly, it was the motherboard.

If your memory and hard drive passed the tests, then what I did to find out if the motherboard is the problem, was:

Take all unnecessary cards out, not including the hard drive, memory, and video card. If the freezing stops, it may be an optional card causing the problem. In this case, reinsert each hard one by one until it resumes freezing, and you've found the culprit.

If the freezing does not stop, we already KNOW that the memory and hard drive are good; the only options left are: the Motherboard & Video Card.

I used THIS to test the video card's stability. Of course, if it freezes during the test, this doesn't necessarily mean that the video card is the problem. Checking the error logs may shed some light on any errors that may have occurred during the test, however.

If you still can't determine if the video card is the culprit or not, try using a known good video card from another computer, or try borrowing a friend's.

If you do determine that the video card is not the issue, the only option left is the motherboard.

I realize I am IGNORING the PSU, but this is because a bad PSU would normally cause crashes or reboots. The only case I can see that the PSU would cause freezes is if it was not rated for your computer configuration - and this would have been apparent at the time the PC was purchased. However, this assumes the PC was not overclocked by you, and you did not recently upgrade the hardware.Hmm.. That sound like it's going to be a bit messy. Even more so considering that I'm not that familiar with the inside of my computer.

But, I'm a fast learner. I'm sure I'll figure it out.Opened up my computer,
and I don't think I have any optional cards. Unless the PCI card counts.

and how long should I run this video card stability test?Got my second blue screen today.

Not sure if this helps, but this is the information I wrote down from it.

Solve : How do I delete a password please??

Answer»

Hello and thank you for looking at my post.

I have a TPG brand computer with 496 meg ram and 2.8 Ghz Celeron.
It has an 80 Gig Hard drive and running Windows XP service pack 3.

I used this computer to log into CH and as such it has my DETAILS recorded into the password section.

If I decide to sell this computer can I remove the passwords that Ive used for different websites?
and if I can, How?,please.

I think it can be DONE with SOMETHING in the windows program, probably called remove passwords, but I dont know where to find that?

Thank you ImnoGuru. Simply clear your cookies and your browser cache and all should be good.

If you sell the computer, you may want to consider REFORMATTING and reinstalling the OS.Thanks Carbon Dudeoxide.
That sounds like a really easy answer that I can handle.
I know there is a clear passwords section somewhere but I really dont know where.(yet.)
Yep reformatting is definately in the making if I decide to sell it then.

Do you think I should add a bit more ram to it though?
It's only got 1/2 a gig!

OH and congrats for the long term online stint....... More than I can do at the best of times. I would definitely get more RAM, around 1GB would be nice.Oh and by the way the drive is a SATA 80 gig.

Solve : I have a problem activating my product!?

Answer»

Two days ago I formated my PC because of infected files.
After I installed my Windows XP SP3, also I installed Microsoft office 2003, and the problem is that I can not activate it because it tells me this:

"Your software cannot be activated because the Product key you installed with is not valid".

It suggests me to uninstall the office and install again but the result is the same.
It was genuine before i formated my PC and I used the same product key.
I can not understand the reason so please help me how to fix this problem.

P.S. I visited the site of Microsoft to GET more help and also i tried to make my office genuine and the result was negative.
Cheers.call microsoft and explain what's going on.

Oh product key is probably not valid because you might have used it too many times. If you have used to more than 3 times just explain to them that you needed to format and office is only installed on 1 computer. (Assuming it is only installed on ONE computer. )

I had the same issue and the tech was very understanding and reactivated my product. I also asked him to remove the older instances of my activation so if i had to reformat and he did.

Good luck.

-HoFLas long as you didn't pirate the software, M$ will be glad to help you out This is very true. Never use pirated OS's!I fixed the problem.
As I explained before i could not activate the office 2003, so i decided to reformat the PC again.
After that the first thing i installed was Windows XP SP2, I activated it. The second thing was installation of Office 2003 and I tried to activate it, which was successfully.
So after the reformat of my PC I did activated both of windows products.
I have a question: why did that happened before the PC reformat, I mean why I could not activate the office 2003?

Cheers.I'm not to sure if this advice is totally correct but as the rumors are at the moment Microsoft is trying to get rid of XP and are not supporting Windows XP in due course.

i am having a similar problem i am running a genuine copy of windows XP 32 BIT but it says that after activating it is not a valid serial key windows said to me " Your copy of Windows XP may be having problems due to the amount of illegal coppies and serial genorators that are out". and to be honest not all that the said is false as you have a 000.1% chance of getting someones serial key via a GENORATOR. i hope this information helped any.

could i also get some help as when i installed my copy of XP I'm not sure if this is a virus or a corrupt file in the DOS ( Error loanding
C:/WINDOWS/System32/NvMcTray.dll and
C:/WINDOWS/System32/NvCpl.dll "The specified module could not be found" that is for both. These appear after turning my computer on as soon as you get to your desktop please replie.NvCpl.dll and NvMcTray.dll are NVidia files. Therefore, I would suggest you try reinstalling the latest version of the NVidia graphics drivers.

Normally it shouldn't be a spyware or virus but viruses or spyware file may have just masked itself under the real file's NAME ... doing a HiJatk This log and having malware specialist double check wouldn't hurt.

NvCpl should be for the nvidia control panel, and

See the link below for more description about nvmctray.dll:
http://www.justtext.com/processes-tasks/nvmctray-dll.html@ christopher1991
Try to reformat your PC (which one helped me), but don't do a QUICK format (make a normal format).
This was the method to fix my problem on acvtiating both of microsoft softwares (windows xp sp2 and office 2003)
Cheersthanks for your help i will check out the information you guys have sent me i will post if it worked or not thank you. ^^

Solve : Windows 7 Issue?????

Answer»

Okay I finally got a copy of 7 RC thing is that I'm not sure if I done it right, I found an new iso in my documents but not sure if that was the required file. I had burned it to a dvd an it says windows starting an seemed to be it but it gives me an error every time, 0xc0000017 an unexpected error occured. So I have no CLUE since it should just start up to it right? I got the 32 bit version an all the hardware is right an I formated the drive but I dont even get that at the main prompt. There isnt a whole lot of time left so if we can get this RESOLVED fast so I can use it.I was ABLE to get it to work, I was downloading updates to other OS's so that it wont boggle down my connection when they needed it. It was more of a hardware conflict then anything and not really reading all of it cause I assumed which I really shouldnt have. Most of my machines are pent 3 an have some form of linux on them an realized that specs are differnt. I had to borrow parts from else were but it will seem to be okay for a while.
I had some sort of problem like that when I was USING the beta. The RC running in virtual machine seemed to work though. I really have no idea what it was thoughI'm doing just a fresh complete install to a drive. Remember its still in the testing as for finding out unless you spend time doing what was happing during it. We wont ever know.

Try sorting it by processor time, and watch which ones are at the top for a while.

Also why do you have SQLSERVER?

CPU usage = 3.07%I downloaded SYSTEM Look onto another computer then installed it on my lap top. Unfortunately it came up empty

Could not FIND

I also attempted turning off Norton by following the directions from the link that had been listed and that ATTEMPT was Futile as well.

It looks like SR.INF is missing, and you have some system files issues.

Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in VISTA), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (hold CTRL, and SHIFT, hit Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD (rarely in Vista case).
If sfc won't find any errors in Windows XP, it'll simply quit, without any message.
Clicked on start

Clicked on run and typed in:

sfc / scannow

Then clicked OK

A blank black screen popped up for less than a second

No info or anythingThis file may be missing as well.

Solve : Help!!!!!!!!!! Blue Screen showing (PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA)?

Answer»
My wife was shutting down her computer and it started installing updates and shut off. When she turned it back on. It started up and went to the inconvenience page where you can go in to safe mode or start windows NORMALLY screen. It wouldn't run in safe mode. Anything I select it goes to this blue screen that says:

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

STOP: 0x00000050 (0x8872A990, 0x00000001, 0x804F35D7, 0x00000000)

Shows this for a second and shuts down and restarts all back over again. Her computer is a Toshiba satellite P105-S6104. Window XP Media Center EDITION 2005.

Thanks for any help!1) Go to System Properties - Advanced - Startup & Recovery Settings and uncheck "automatically restart.
2) Download and run a memory testing UTILITY - let's see if your ram is okay.Hey Allen,
Where can I go to download memory testing utility? As you can tell Allan, I don't know much about a computer so bare with me but how am I going to get it to run a her computer if I can't run computer in safe mode? You will download a .iso image of the memorty testing utility (ie, memtest), burn the image to a cd with a .iso burning utility and boot to that cd. You will not be booting to the hd. You'll need to make sure the cd is the first device in the bios boot order.Allan I found the Recovery and Application CD. I did like you said and changed the booting order and it run the cd. TOOK about 1.5 HRS and set computer back to default settings. Lost what she had on it but it's back up and working.

Thanks so much for your help!

Solve : I dropped My Laptop?

Answer»

Well I have had my Compaq notebook laptop for about 4 months now. It's worked okay despite my start panel moving AROUND the sides of my laptop randomly when i switch it on! But i dropped my laptop today and when i was turning it on, and this green vertical line appeared on the screen. it doesn't disappear when i connect to the internet or when i turn my laptop off. I don't know what to do as i'm only 15 and my family are clueless with computers and so am i to be honest. Also seeing as i'm 15 i probably won't be able to buy any new cables or other TECHNICAL things. Any help would be appreciated Your laptop's display problem seems to have been CAUSED by dropping it, so it is very likely indeed that it is due to EITHER damaged hardware (display panel, ribbon cable etc) or maybe if you were very LUCKY, a dislodged connector at one end of the ribbon cable which links the display to the motherboard. There is no magic software fix. You need to take the laptop to a repair company. I don't see what relevance your age has to this.

It needs to be built from scratch...in a directory on your HDD and then burned to a bootable CD...
But if you're giving up this easy as it sounds i'm not gonna spend much time on it either.

No i'm not giving up so easy. Jus't don't know how to do.
Built from scratch ? sorry i don't understand.
can you be more specific? With Nero, it's a lot EASIER to create a BOOT floppy disk and then create the bootable CD from the floppy disk. The CD runs in FDD Emulation and boots as the "A"-drive.
Quote from: dahlarbear on February 11, 2010, 06:37:58 PM
When a USB flash drive is setup for use, it's partition and/or volume boot record structure is setup to emulate either a floppy disk drive or hard disk drive. It looks like your SYSTEM supports both formats.

i tried do what you say, step by step ,and the usb pen stay's allways empty.
why ?This might work, but I don't think your BIOS supports booting from a flash drive.

Would you settle for a bootable USB flash drive (with Windows 98 system files) that boots directly to command prompt?
a. Windows 98 System Files
b. HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool - v2.1.8

Quote from: rstudio on February 12, 2010, 02:58:23 PM
i tried do what you say, step by step ,and the usb pen stay's allways empty.
why ?

1. Try harder. Strictly speaking, there aren't "step-by-step" instructions, so I'm not sure what you did or where the process broke down for you.

2. Windows 98 System Files. From the link referenced in "a." above, download the "zip" file and extract the system files into a temporary directory.

Be careful to pick the correct download link. It is NOT the big RED "START DOWNLOAD" link. It is the smaller "Primary Download Site" link to the left of the big RED one. Feel free to SCAN the "zip" file with your favorite anti-virus and/or anti-malware scanners.

3. HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool. From the link referenced in "b." above, download the installation file. Again, it is the smaller "Primary Download Site" link to the left of the big RED one.
a. Execute the installation file.

b. Start the program (Start -> All_Programs -> Hewlett-Packard_Company -> HP_USB_Disk_Storage_Format_Tool)

c. Within the program window:
(1) Select "Device" to format.
(2) Select "File System" (FAT, FAT32, NTFS).
(3) Enter a "Volume label".
(4) Within "Format options" subsection.
(a) Uncheck "Quick_Format".
(b) Uncheck "Enable Compression", if not "grayed out".
(c) Check "Create a DOS startup disk".
(d) Select "using DOS system files located at:"
(e) Browse to "temporary" directory you unzipped the Windows 98 system files to earlier (and select it).
(f) Hit "Start" button.
(g) I presume you wait for it to finish. I can't tell you exactly what it does because I don't have a flash drive I want to overwrite at the moment (and it's been several weeks since I made mine using these procedures).

I have a Toshiba Pro A200 laptop.

The HARD drive became corrupted and the MACHINE would not boot. I removed the drive and reformatted it on another computer.

Having replaced the drive I get the 'NTLDR is missing' MESSAGE.

So I inserted a windows XP disk intending to install it - I get a message that 'setup did not find any hard disk drives installed'. Same if I PRESS repair - intending to copy the NTLDR files to the drive.

I checked the BIOS settings and the drive is listed, just as it is on the choice/selection of boot devices.

Please advise?

The purpose of this procedure is to restore the mmc.exe file. did that with my xp cd and the pc just sat there...You need to hit ENTER after typing the command into the run line...hit enter message saying checking PROTECTED files cd powering up and down progress bar came to an end pc sat there so i re-set and STILL the same,so if i have a problem i will have to re-install xp or w7 unless somebody has a better idea........

Solve : pc shuts down when i open a particular file?

Answer»

Greetings all

I am currently experiencing an odd problem with my pc, I am getting random shut downs when I try to open certain files. It first happened when i tried to open an excel file emailed to me by my colleague, there is nothing wrong with the file but when I try to open it my pc shuts down after a few seconds from loading the file.

I also get random shut downs when i watch certain videos on youtube, there is one video that i know of shuts down my pc right away but it works fine on all the other pcs.

I have check the Administrative Tools>Event Viewer but it doesnt log the shut down although i saw some logs of System Hang

Could this be a PSU problem? perhaps FAULTY capacitors on the motherboard?

i am using a moderate all in one motherboard, been using it for 2 years or so

Any help is much appreciated

TY
No...it's probably the file itself...
What leads you to believe there is nothing wrong with the file ?Quote from: ddew on February 08, 2010, 01:52:29 PM

Not likely a hardware problem. But try this. Restart in Safe mode with the VGA. You might have a problem with the video drive. Also, have you run full scans for persistent roque malware? It is possible a roue has infected the normal video driver. Or maybe a service that is not active in safe mode.
This video mentions a trojan that GETS into a driver.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltOT76epwfM1. Memory Dumps. Do the random shutdowns produce memory dump files (crash dump)? Look for "C:\Windows\Minidump" subdirectory containing files with names of format "MiniMMDDYY-nn.dmp" (e.g. Mini020610-01.dmp). Also look for "C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP".

2. Is your system configured to produce a memory dump?

To check and/or configure: Start -> right-click My_Computer -> Properties -> Advanced tab -> Settings button within "Startup and Recovery" subsection ->

a. System failure subsection:
(1) Check "Write an event to the system log"
(2) Check "Send an administrative alert"
(3) Uncheck "Automatically restart"

b. Write debugging information subsection. Select one of the following:
(1) Small memory dump (64 KB) - typical setting
(2) Kernel memory dump - will also produce small memory dump

Accept defaults for dump directory and file names. You may set "Overwrite any existing file" either way (check/uncheck).

If you've modified the settings, don't forget to select "OK" button(s) to accept on the way out.

3. System Hang Logs. I'm not familiar with these. Do the date-time-groups appear to coorelate with the random shutdowns? What do the logs say?to safe mod and open it
try test reinstall office and opent it.

Solve : UN-ABBREAVIATED ICONS IN XP?

The titles under my icons are abbreaviated unless the icon is highlighted. How can
I make the icon display the WHOLE title with out highlighting?
Thanks Put the name on multiple lines.Quote from: fesbow on February 10, 2010, 03:26:08 PM

The titles under my icons are abbreaviated unless the icon is highlighted.
Where the title is more than two lines, do the titles show up to two lines unless highlighted? Or, are you only seeing one line?I an seeing two lines, but I would like to see all THREE lines when not highlighted.I don't think it's possible. Why do you need to see three lines? You can rename each icon to make it easier to know what is what if that's a problem. Not sure why a SHORTCUT would need 3 lines of text...
But i agree with kpac...i don't think WINDOWS will show them...

Solve : max number of secrets has been exceeded! what the heck!?

Answer»

ok people, I plug a usb flash drive into a win xp sp3 home laptop.

I then get the message "The max number of secrets has been exceeded" what the heck!

- I have deep scanned it with bitdefender 2010 fully updated and no virus's found.

- I also cleaned up the registry errors with tuneup utilities 2009 and then restarted.

What registry key can I fix? Anyone know? This question is all over the net and I have not found any registry key settings to fix it. (I believe the registry could fix this problem).

I doubt it.

This is error is caused, as billrich stated, when a system has too MANY Secrets- like stored passwords, or really any bit of encrypted data. this limit is imposed by the US government for some reason. It's not SPECIFIC to IIS server and is in fact a Standard windows error message, like File not found and so forth.

Anyway, the only fix is to reinstall the OS. however, in many cases - and especially considering the fact that your plugging in a flash drive - this is caused by malware.

Follow the malware guide here; I am aware you've stated you did a full scan with bitdefender but really that is meaningless; any single AV program can miss a single infection, additionally, it might not even be an infection in your PC but rather a infection on the flash drive in question. But first, a few more questions:

-Is this error only occuring with a specific flash drive, or any flash drive you connect? Are thy encrypted? are they "U3 Smart" enabled?
-Do you get the message with other USB devices?
-Does the flash drive still appear in windows explorer after you receive the error?

Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 08, 2010, 07:15:28 PM
The op stated that he "deep scanned" it, implying the flash drive was the object that was scanned, but you still make a good point: AV scanners don't catch everything.

@OP: You should go to the malware section of the forum to try and fix this solution. This one really puzzled me. When I Googled the error message, most of the posts seemed to be involved in copying DVDs.

The US government set a limit on how many encrypted files can be exported (4096) and it seems somehow DVD copy programs bump into this limit.

No computer except a network server or web site would have 4096 passwords and most of the error messages seem to be on home computers.

Not sure why a flash drive would be a problem unless you have some DVD copying program on it.ok guys encryption draws a red flag for me because bitdefender has file encryption settings.

Although why is this all over the net? I'm sure not everyone has bitdefender. I don't think that is the cause.

Ok the flash drive has been used on about 50 computers and has been scanned by bitdefender and norton 360.

The flash drive is safe and doesn't ever cause this error on any other computer. only this random laptop that I have turned inside out without formatting it.

Thanks guys... Any other smart people know anything?

Solve : Need Help on formating my laptop!?

Answer»

Ok, the situation is that I do posses a Laptop, TOSHIBA Satellite Pro.
The problem is so that i can not format it, because it wont start from DVD ROM/CD RW with the Windows XP SP2 CD on it.
Usually it can read all kind of CD's or DVD's after Operating System is loaded.

When i CHECK the Device Manager it shows me that the DVD ROM/CD RW device driver is installed and works properly.
Any advice please it will be welcome.
You need to put the dvd DRIVE at the top of the boot order in bios.I tried that, but somehow it can not read the CD.
I forgot to tell you that i tried with two Windows OS CD's and the result is the same.

CheersHomemade Windows CD's ? ?
Or do they have shiny holograms and say Microsoft all over them ? ?If they are indeed ORIGINAL, retail cd's then the dvd drive is NOT at the top of the boot order in bios OR the optical drive is defective.

When i try safe mode, same thing.

Please help, I'd try to use the CD to restore but have long lost it. please please help

Every time i turn it on after the windows loading screen it restarts and keeps doing it over and over again.

1. Disable Auto Restart. Use the <F8> function key during system startup to access the Windows Advanced Options Menu. Tap the key once or twice per second as you startup the computer (or immediately after POST completes and screen flashes BLACK prior to displaying Windows XP logo with its processing bar DISPLAY).

From the Windows Advanced Options menu, use the up/down arrow keys to select the "Disable automatic restart on system failure" and hit .

Hopefully it will stop on a Blue Screen.

2. Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Report the "exact" STOP code string with its four PARAMETERS as well as any short error string and/or SOFTWARE module it might name.

Solve : Computer wont boot. How can I turn off safe mode??

Answer»

Here's the deal:
I got a virus, so of course, I tried to open the couple anti-virus programs that i have installed.
The virus prevented these programs from running so I turned off the computer and attempted to boot in safe mode to run the Anti-virus software. It wouldnt boot in safe mode.
I have GOTTEN this computer to boot in safe mode several times before so I assumed the virus was preventing me from doing it this time.
So I booted normally, ran MSCONFIG, and set it to boot in safe mode (i think this was my big mistake).
Now, the computer will not boot at all.
My assumption is that the virus is preventing me from starting in safe mode. and the configuration settings i changed are preventing me from running in normal mode.

The big question is: How can I turn off safe mode without being able to boot?

I also began the process of doing a repair install of XP, but it WONT install in safe mode. I have all my important data backed up so Im not totally against a clean install but i would like to prevent that. I just want my laptop back!!WELCOME to the CH forums.

Quote

I also began the process of doing a repair install of XP, but it wont install in safe mode.

From the above can we assume that you have an XP install disk? If so you can boot from that, after setting bios to boot from your optical drive first, then edit or delete Boot.ini from the RECOVERY Console.

Please read this.

It looks like the repair install is working now. Thanks for your help!! If your system is infected a repair install will not solve the problem. When you get back into Windows you should go to the malware section of this forum and follow the INSTRUCTIONS at the top of that page.

Solve : where are my fonts?

Answer»

I re-formatted this computer a few days ago. Before I formatted, all the fonts were there. I made a folder and saved them ALL. I also have a clone that was done a month ago. So they shold ALL be on there as well.

Before the format, I was doing a PSP lesson and it asked for a particular font. it was there. I am doing the same lesson today and that font as well as others are not anywhere to be found. Not even on the clone. I don't understand this. Do some of these fonts COME with particular VERSIONS of psp? This time I only installed the PSPX2. Before I had other versions installed too. I am at a loss as to where these are and why they are not found on the clone... What to do next??? what is the font? There are two RIGHT now that I cannot LOCATE at all. "padaloma" "HAPPY"If you formatted your computer then of course your non-default fonts will be gone. Even if you put them in another folder (that folder will be gone).Padaloma TTF is available here.

Happy fonts are shown here, you'll have to sort out which one(s) you want.Thank you for the link. I did have a font called "happy" I wonder how I can find that particular font?Quote from: Marjorie on February 09, 2010, 07:49:48 PM

Thank you for the link. I did have a font called "happy" I wonder how I can find that particular font?
There are a great many fonts with that name...you'll really have to find it for yourself. Here's a font named Happy.ttf by Annie de la Vega, perhaps this is the one you seek. Otherwise you'll have go ride the Google.

Good luckThanks so much, it is probably the one I needed. I had my fonts saved on two seperate external drives and it has disappeared. It is strange...

Solve : Looking for free registry scan and repair program?

My wife was unable to open wmv. files. When I go under Folder options and file types, wmv isn't even LISTED (seems strange). Somewhere I was told to run a reccomended Registry scan and repair program (the COMPUTER is slow also, geting more memory tomm.) anyways the program is Uniblue Registry Booster 2010. It found 328 errors, and would fix 15 for free and the rest if I bought it. Is it worth buying? Are there free ONES out there and does this seem like alot of errors or is this common? As you browse the forums you will find that Registry Editors, Registry Repairers, Registry this that and the next thing are very very seldom, if ever, recommended by those with experience in problem solving. Remember that it is in interests of anyone selling Registry repair/scan software to tell you how good it is and how bad the state of your registry is. It is unlikely that you will find any noticeable or measurable improvement in performance having paid for and used any Registry Cleaner, Optimizer etc...

The only Registry cleaner TYPE software in my armory is the one included with CCleaner (free from http://www.ccleaner.com/) but which I have never used.

My advice is to steer clear of Registry editors/repairers etc...

Edit: Wrong info.

Wildman, assuming you are running WinXP since you posted in this forum, do you have Windows MEDIA Player in your programs? It will play .wmv files. If you don't have WMP, which media player do you have?

And I agree 100% with the other members to steer clear of registry programs.

Rosie 1) Stay away from ANY registry cleaners
2) Is the file association broken? What happens when you try to open a .wmv file?

Solve : boots up to DOCUMENTS in windows explorer?

From there I am able to OPEN the IE file and get on the internet. But I don't feel protected . Can anyone help? http://tpsconsulting.blogspot.com/2005/10/my-documents-folder-opens-on-windows.html

All the following information from the above site.

Quote

"My Documents Folder Opens on Windows Boot Up

My Documents Folder should not normally open on Windows Boot Up.

This is a problem I recently FOUND occurring a lot on computers I worked on and the solution is as follows:

NOTE that this involves editing the windows registry which is the 'brain' of the computer. Therefore, if you feel uncomfortable doing brain surgery, please notify your computer tech on this problem.

Run regedit and navigate to:HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion/Winlogon
In there there should be a value (on right hand side of screen) CALLED Userinit.

The data for this value is probably something similar to:C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe

If you do see a duplicated string in there similar to the above - simply double click on the Userinit value and edit the data so as to delete everything to the right of the first comma (,).

In the case above you would leave only:C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe

Exit registry edit and reboot. No more My Documents on boot up!

As always, more TIPS can be found on my TIPS page as well as many free utility software programs for DOWNLOAD from the SOFTWARE/SUPPORT page."

Solve : Cannot make a back-up disk or transfer files or pics off my hard drive!?

Answer»

First my tech info....
Gateway model GT4016, running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Version 2002 Service PACK 3, AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3700+ 2.2 GHz, 1 MB L2 cache, 2000 MHz System Bus 896 MB of RAM Physical Address Extension, nVIDIA GeForce 6100 GPU With Available PCI-Express Slot, Memory 1024 MB DDR Dual Channel, Network & Modem 10/100 Mbps Ethernet LAN 56KITU V.92 Ready Fax/Modem, Hard Drive 200 GB (but when I go to 'My Computer' 'Local Disk (C:)' it says 'Free Space' is 142 GB 'NTFS' and 'Total Size' is 182 GB with drive 'D' 4.07 GB 'FAT32' with 2.38 GB 'free'), 9-in-1 Memory Card Reader, BTX System Design.

When I try and make a backup disk to use in case of a crash, with all my files and pics on it, this is what happens....I go to 'My Computer' on my desk top and double click, then I right click on 'Local Disk (C:). In 'Properties' I go to 'Tools' and select 'Backup Now'. The 'Backup or Restore Wizard' window opens and 'Always start in wizard mode' is checked. I click 'Next' and the 'Backup or Restore window comes up with the 'Back up files and settings' button checked and I hit 'Next'. This brings up the 'What to Back Up' window and I go down and PICK 'All information on this computer' and click 'Next'. This brings up 'Backup TYPE, Destination, and Name' window. I put a blank DVD-R 8x in drive E and the 'CD Drive (E:) window comes up and I just close it without picking anything. My choices are, Burn CD using REALPLAYER, Open writable CD folder using Windows Explorer, Create Disk or Edit Image using DVD Solution, Burn movie to CD/DVD using Power2Go, Burn an audio CD using Windows Media Player, and Take no action. Should I pic one of these, is that my problem because I just close this window without picking one??? Anyway, I choose E:\ and title it Backup0210 and click 'Next'. I get a window that is called 'Backup Utility' and says....The backup file name could not be used. "E:\Backup0210.bkf" Please ensure it is a valid path, and that you have sufficient access. So, what is the problem???

As for my files and pics, I can email files or pics or I can send my pics to a web site to have them printed out, but I cannot copy them to a disk or memory 'stick' as a way of saving them someplace else besides my hard drive!!!! Here is what happens. I go to 'My Documents' on my desk top and double click, 'My Pictures' and double click, I double click a folder of pics, I double click a pic, I right click on a pic and click on 'Send to' drive E: where I have a blank DVD-R 8x. A window called 'Problem Copying' pops up and says...Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this file. What do you want Windows to do? I can choose 'Retry' or 'Cancel'. At the same time another window is open called 'Copying...' and it is running but making no progress. If I hit 'retry' the same things happen.

Can someone help me with these problems? The backup utility in Windows XP (NTBACKUP) does not write to optical media (CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs) by default.

Here are your options:

1) Back up to an external hard drive
2) Use Firestreamer to have your DVD burner emulate a tape drive (because that's exactly what NTBACKUP supports best: tape, which I'll bet less than 0.00001% of consumers will ever use on a PC).
3) Use another program to back up your computer.

#1 would be your best option. Less hassle in the long run. Besides, do you really want to restore from 12 DVDs? DVDs only hold 4.5 GB of data, and you've got 40 GB of data filled up on your C drive.

I ALREADY answered your question about Outlook saving passwords. If that doesn't solve the problem you need to clarify your quesiton. The problem is this: When using Outlook 2002 with Vista, the "remember password" can be checked but they are lost and must be reentered every time Outlook is gone into. I've seen this issue mentioned by others who are also frustrated with the fact that passwords are not remembered in Vista but no ONE seems to know what to do. It has nothing to do with Vista. See if anything here helps: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290684 Allan. Thanks for the link to put a default subject line in Outlook 2002, but there has to be a step missing as I can only get so far and then what is suggested doesn't exist to do...Allan, thanks for the link. I'll give this a try with fear and trembling being an older guy with little sense of COMPUTERS.You're not much older than I am, if at all, and computers don't frighten me . By the way, if you don't use disk imaging software to backup your system you should. Look into it. Images are best saved to a second (internal or external) hard drive and should be created frequently, keeping the most recent images and deleting the older ONES.

Solve : windows product keys?

Answer»

I got a hand-me-down computer with an OEM Windows XP Home license key on the side of it. I also have a retail installation disc of Windows XP Home. I used the product key on the side of the computer and tried to install it and it would not accept the product key..

I ALWAYS thought, when using OEM product keys, that as long as the key is used on the same computer it shipped with, any installation disc would work, as long as the version (Home or Professional) matched the product key.

Maybe the motherboard INSIDE the computer is not the ORIGINAL one? don't knowOEM product keys are tied to OEM versions of the OS.I see..

Is it ok to do a repair install on an OEM Windows installation, with a retail disk?

sureYes.
You COULD also always call MS about the older machine...they may just ACTIVATE it for you.You mean, even though I used a retail disc to install it, they might activate it?

Would they want the OEM product key?
