Solve : System Standby/Hibernate Not Available in Windows XP SP3? |
Answer» Hi. But when I left click on the C drive ("Local Disk"), instead of opening my hard drive to show files/folders, it instead takes me to the "Search Page" with the canine search companion over on the left side. Drives me nuts. Just an example of some quirky things. May not be related. Try this - either at the command prompt or typed into the Run box regsvr32 /i shell32.dllQuote from: Dias de verano on December 28, 2008, 08:01:59 AM Quote from: black069 on December 28, 2008, 06:47:00 AMBut when I left click on the C drive ("Local Disk"), instead of opening my hard drive to show files/folders, it instead takes me to the "Search Page" with the canine search companion over on the left side. Drives me nuts. Just an example of some quirky things. May not be related. Dias de verano, Thanks for the advice on how to correctly open my C: drive when I left click on it (instead of going to search companion). It did work. Could anyone please provide assistance on how to fix my POWER OPTIONS problem as described in the first post? Happy New Year, ScottHere are a few things you can try: Quote Standby problems: Or Here... Good Luck and let us know. P.S. Sorry this took so long. Thanks, Patio, for the three links you found re: standby/hibernate issues. As you can see from the date on your last post here, it's been almost a month since I received them. I have TRIED to go through each of these, but it feels like the equivalent of translating a novel from Greek to Latin, when English is my primary language and my "Latin" is more like Pig Latin. So the Greek just seems like Greek. I don't say this lightly; I have spent many hours, writing multiple PAGES of notes, but as something between a novice and a low-functioning intermediate user, I just don't get it. For example, in the rickrogers solution, the following appears within the first two sentences: First thing: Using both BIOS-based power management and Windows-based power management rarely works. If you are using both, disable one or the other. Sometimes, reducing the power state that standby achieves can help (often a BIOS setting). Sometimes, updating a driver can help, especially a new install that is relying primarily on default drivers SUPPLIED with Windows. Default drivers don't usually cover the full spectrum of functionality, they just provide for basic function. I have tried my absolute best to learn what a system BIOS is, but I have only a superficial understanding of it, and nothing that would qualify as applicable knowledge. And as far as updating drivers, I can do so if I know what needs an updated driver and the driver is available right in front of me. Otherwise, I have no clue. Windows Update takes care of that for me. If it used to work, then look at what you've changed. This can mean that you added hardware, added or modified conflicting software, or that you updated some driver. Since this problem has been going on for a few months now (with me not even knowing when it started), it could literally be any one of hundreds of things. As for the second solution (from Microsoft's Knowledge Database), I feel like it would be a useful article if I could understand it. But it says in the beginning that the article is written at the level of the intermediate-to-advanced level user. I'm not criticizing you by no means...just expressing my frustration. The way that my life is set out on a daily basis, it would be very helpful to have system standby and hibernate working as it did for the first five or so years I have had the computer. Any more recommendations? If not, could you point me to good place to learn the basics of working with computers. Everything I have found either is too basic (e.g. how to perform "fast user switching") or too advanced (how to run code while parsing your partition on the WLAN network in Cisco mode). I made that last one up But seriously, know of a site that, like the medical textbooks, teaches computer functionality (vs. neurosurgery) to dummies? Thanks a bunch. (And I haven't given up on the standby/hibernate issue, by the way.) Quote from: black069 on February 10, 2009, 12:21:00 AM And as far as updating drivers, I can do so if I know what needs an updated driver and the driver is available right in front of me. Well, we can probably figure out what driver it is: Quote from: black069 on December 28, 2008, 06:47:00 AM such as this one I wrote down: You haven't told us the exact model of the printer- so the best link I can give you is this: http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Lookup?h_lang=en&h_cc=us&cc=us&h_page=hpcom&lang=en&h_client=S-A-R163-1&h_pagetype=s-002&h_query=hotosmart+C6100&submit=Go+%BB obviously the printer itself should have the proper model number LISTED. Just click the proper model and select your OS. Go for the "Basic" driver, unless you use any particular functionality provided by the HP software you currently have installed. best course of action once you get the driver is to remove your current driver software for the printer. This will likely be in Add/remove programs. Then install the new downloaded version. |

Solve : Well, I think I need some help now.? |
Answer» Quote from: Ulva on February 09, 2009, 08:41:41 PM ...... After about 5 tries, I took it to Best Buy so they could RUN some diagnostics and they found no hardware issues, but about 150 viruses. So I restored to factory settings... Which did nothing. I log in, and every time after about 20 SECONDS, the CRAZY patterns come on again and the computer restarts. If you restored from a Recovery Partition on the hard disk, are you certain that the recovery partition was free of any virus, and/or that your system partition was disinfected before/after the restore? |

Solve : administrator password invalid? |
Answer» I'm trying to repair XP through the recovery console and it's asking for the administrator password. I enter it and it's telling me in's invalid. It KEEPS asking for one even if I disable the password. Recovery Console Password Good luckOk, WELL so much for going it that direction. Guess I'll try a re-install Thanks The choice is yours of course, personally I apply the regedit. Remember that if you are re-installing the same system version the problem with accessing Recovery Console may exist after the re-install. You might want to consider trying to access Recovery Console after the re-install and if the password stonewall still appears, apply the regedit. Whatever you decide - good luck. If it is his system, he can DESTROY the password. But may not work if some data has been put in private directories. We are told here not to help people with password problems. But if you know how to Google, there is some free stuff and some not free stuff out there to help people who believe they that have a reason to bypass the security.Quote from: Geek-9pm We are told here not to help people with password problems You can always refer any enquiry to CH000172 |

Solve : Problem in, C:\ program files? |
Answer» On my computers hard DRIVE under program files I have a game INSTALLED. I uninstalled the game to fix a problem I was having but noticed that some files ASSOCIATED with that game are still in my system. When I tried to delete them they wouldn't delete. So I clicked on the file to see what was still there I got this error message, C:\program files\game\objects refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network The file properties said it was empty so I reinstalled the game thinking it would not cause any problems. However this old file still interferes with the game by merging itself with the new install. If the file is empty why? Any suggestions. Thanks AlotIt would seem that you did not do a proper un install. When you remove a program there can be some files left. This is a problem with the way windows does things and the way program developers understand things. |

Okay anyways, I wanted to give it to my Brother to use. So I hooked up everything and started the computer. It started up normally, no unusual sounds, But the screen just stays on the Compaq logo screen with a blinking light on the top right hand corner. I don't know what to do as of now. Solve : can't log in, no option? |
Answer» I have XP pro. I installed a driver for my usb bluetooth device so i could update it. it asked me RESTART, i clicked no since i wasn't done working, then clicked restart later. i come back and it hadn't restarted. i click shut down, the little shut down menu closes, but it just stays going. i try to shut down from task manager and it's the same thing. i try to log off, switch user, everything, and nothing works. so i hold the power button and turn it off. when i restart, it goes normal then when it comes to the welcome screen, my icon and username aren't there. it's blank, just the background with no users. there isn't even an option to shut down or anything. i restarted in safe mode, and it was the same thing. if i try to hit enter or something, my system speaker beeps. i need this to work fast. What happens if you press CTRL+ALT+DEL at the user login screen?Nothing. If i hit Enter or Escape, i get a beep, but that's it.Did you try Last Known Good Configuration at the advanced startup screen? Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso Thanks BroniWill this just fix any messed files? i don't want it changing all my settings, etc. Will my MS UPDATES and stuff be there still? It'll only fix (if it's able to do so) your boot files. It won't break anything. |

I was playing an mmorpg and out of the blue i crashed to the desktop..that has never happened to me before. I was on ventrilo and i crashed out of ventrilo as well. I tried getting BACK into ventrilo and for about 15 mins I wasnt able to. When i did get back in all my sound settings were gone. I fixed my sound setting then went back in game..about 5 mins later i crashed again and BRIEFLY saw a blue screen. I have scanned and defraged and there is nothing wrong... my programs say. Today when i got on and the pc booted up to the desk top I got a MESSAGE that said something like the registery has been changed and my system used a back up to RESTORE the registry and that it was successful. It was a hard drive issue and I have now installed a fresh version of windows xp sp3!! Although things seem a bit slow its going well. Your hard drive should have had NOTHING to do with your computer's INABILITY to boot to a disk. How did you determine that it was the hard drive at FAULT? Did you buy a new one? If your machine is running slower than it was before the fresh install, then you should be worried.Probably slow because the MBoard drivers haven't been installed yet...everyone seems to forget this step when re-installing.Quote from: patio on January 19, 2009, 06:29:22 AM Probably slow because the MBoard drivers haven't been installed yet...everyone seems to forget this step when re-installing. How would I go about installing those? I determined it was a hard drive issue because when I inserted another clean/formatted hard drive and re installed windows it worked fine. So That doesnt mean it was a hard drive issue, I actually do not know the cuase of my problem but Its working fine now so im satisfied.Patio?Father?....Sorry, Just got back. If you have a CD labeled Drivers that shipped with your machine just put it in and it may start by itself...if not open Windows Explorer and look for a Setup icon and click it... If you don't have that CD DLoad; install and run Everest Home which will give us all your machine info...save the log to atext file and copy and paste the computer summary portion and we'll SEE about tracking down your correct drivers.Ok ,thanks |

Solve : Reboot Repair problem with HP Pavilion DV6000? |
Answer» The computer is an HP Pavilion DV6000, a solid decently priced laptop computer. Nowadays when I start it up after shutting down the normal menu shutdown way, it will automatically into repair mode, which takes several MINUTES, giving the reason that I didn't shut it down properly. I did, so is there some other EXPLANATION? A virus? Or is there a command I can give it or a button to make it stop? Because it slows down the PROCESS, it doesn't seem to do anything else Still under warranty? No it isn't, and anyway, I was hoping for a practical solution, but thanx anyway. Is this XP ? ? Solve : Wireless Internet Problem? |
Answer» I have a wireless internet problem. I FUNCTION fine when I am hard wired into my router but when I am working in a wireless mode, I have very inconsistent results. The biggest problem is that once I get onto many web pages, I cannot go further onto the page. I click on something or try to access additional information on a page and my computer will run for several minutes before I get a cannot access message. But the problem is intermittent. It will work fine sometimes but many times it doesn't. If I reconfirm IP address, it will work fine for a few minutes but then it will start to ACT up again. Connection strength looks good so I don't think it is DUE to a weak signal. It almost seems like my computer gets stuck trying to drill deeper into a web site. It STARTS to download but then just seems to stall. Sometimes if I hit REFRESH, the info will pop right up. But many times that doesn't work either. Does anyone have any ideas? Please help. Thanks. |

Solve : dell laptop got water? |
Answer» water was spilled on the KEYBOARD. immediatly turned over, unplugged, LET dry. starts up normally and displays message " internal hard disk drive not found . try to reseat the drive ". also " no bootable devices ". Is it wrecked?Water has probably got inside the hard drive. can it be blown dry, then eventully work, or does the water short something in the hard drive that makes it non repairable. Do not blow dry a water problem. That influences oxygenation which in turn creates rust.too metal, there are a number of other things that could be wrong with it an its not possible to do that since there enclosed for protection. I would attempt data recovery an get a NEW one.Quote from: squall_01 on June 21, 2009, 07:33:02 AM too metal, there are a number of other things that could be wrong with it an its not possible to do that since there enclosed for protection. Then we can see what is wrong. If you took the drive out an let it air dry we could see if its okay or not. |

Solve : Game movie audio out of sync? |
Answer» Hi. I recently upgraded my motherboard to a ASUS PQ5 pro and my graphics card to a XENON GTX 260 896MB 448bit. I've updated all my drivers and everything seems to be in order however all my games as showing the same problem: in-GAME movies such as .BIK files are running the video increasingly faster than the audio i.e. it STARTS in sync, but gets worse as the movie plays on. This isn't game-breaking, but it is annoying and I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix it. Normal AVI files run fine and gameplay sound runs fine too, so I'm kind of at a loss as to how to approach this.Exactly what games are we talking about here? Impossible to answer the question without knowing. There are literally thousands of different games that use Bink.I've seen it happen with prototype, the ghostbusters game, bully and both KOTOR games. I figure it's a universal issue, since they were all fine before. What sound quality is your Realtek card set to? 44100Hz or 48000Hz? Or something different? Where might I check for this?Double-click the Realtek icon in the system tray, this should open the Realtek Audio Manager. Click the 'Speakers' tab, then the 'Default Format' tab. There should be a little pull down menu there. Select 44100Hz, either 16 or 24-bit quality.sorry ment to say couldnt, course till I got updated drivers for my sound card the same thing happened as well. I would start there.Quote from: quaxo on June 21, 2009, 09:58:48 PM Double-click the Realtek icon in the system tray, this should open the Realtek Audio Manager. Click the 'Speakers' tab, then the 'Default Format' tab. Well, that fixed the syncing problem, which is awesome, but the quality took a bit of a dive. Now I get a slight bit of static during these movies. AVI files are STILL fine and it's tolerable, bit if there is a way to have the best of both worlds then I'll bake you a pie. Either way, thanks for the advice.Did you pick 16 or 24 bit? Some people notice a difference between the two, some don't. There are going to be the selected few. I would have 24 bit but thats just me.Quote from: quaxo on June 22, 2009, 03:09:37 AM Did you pick 16 or 24 bit? Some people notice a difference between the two, some don't. I don't have that option. I just have 44.1K, 48K, 96K and 192K. I also have an option no s/pdif output or output digital audio source. This is on the Realtek HD Audio Manager which has an ASUS logo. These setting where in a slightly different spot since I didn't have a speakers tab, just an Audio I/O tab. It's shot in the dark, but it won't hurt anything to try this. 1. Start -> Run... 2. TYPE in 'dxdiag' and push OK. This will open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. 3. Click the 'Sound' tab. 4. Move the 'Hardware Sound Acceleration Level' SLIDER to 'Normal' (if it's on 'Full') or 'Full' (if it's on 'Normal'). With some things this can correct sound problems. If it doesn't fix it, or if it gets worse, move it back to the previous position. |

Solve : "Entry point not found" after installed Win XP SP3? |
Answer» I downloaded SP3 from Microsoft and upgrade my O/S. After installed the SP3 every time when I boot up the system will have two windows warning displays "Entry Point Not Found." One is "AirGCFG.exe", one is "WZCSLDR.exe." In detail is says "The procedure entry could not be located in the dynamic link library wlanapi.dll" But the system is working stable seem no problem. One is "AirGCFG.exe", one is "WZCSLDR.exe." you need neither of these. Just use the XP built-in wireless zero configuration. There is no error display in Device Mamager. I tried to update the driver in the Device Manager, and removed reinstalled the driver again. But the event still happen when boot up the system. I'm no problem go to the internet!!! Download HijackThis: http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download by clicking on Download HijackThis Installer Install, and run it. Post HijackTHis log. Do NOT attempt to fix anything! NOTE. If you're USING Vista, right click on HijackThis, and click Run as AdministratorI already saved the "HijackTHis" logfile. Now attached here [attachment deleted by admin]Open HJT, and checkmark following lines: - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [D-Link AirPlus G] D:\Program Files\D-Link\AirPlus G\AirGCFG.exe - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ANIWZCS2Service] D:\Program Files\ANI\ANIWZCS2 Service\WZCSLDR2.exe Click "Fix checked" button. Solve : Dual Booting WinXP & WinXP? |
Answer» If the 2nd install of XP was not done with the 1st install in place no bootloader in the world is going to help you... If the 2nd install of XP was not done with the 1st install in place no bootloader in the world is going to help you... I'm not sure where you are coming from here... I just did an install of XP when only one HDD was present on the system.. I then removed that drive and PUT a different HDD on the system, installed XP, Mastered one HDD and Slaved the other... Then I edited the boot.ini file on the BOOTABLE HDD (the one set first in CMOS), restarted, and I got my DUAL boot options..(boot.ini file appeared) But what if you have them as masters? Sorry dont mean too but kind of getting an answer too not that ...How can you have both PATA drives set as MASTERS on an IDE chain and expect them to work? What exactly do you mean, squall? edit: oh did you mean, "what if they are both SATA"? don't know, but I would bet it would work the same as if they were PATA............with the exception of being able to master and slave themYou can set two PATA drives as master as long as they are on different IDE controllers. For example I had a computer with one drive set as master and the optical drive set as slave on IDE controller 0 and the other hard drive was also set as master on controller 1.Quote from: blockHEAD on June 17, 2009, 11:13:08 PM I'm not sure where you are coming from here... I'm suprised it worked for you but Windows cannot be explained in any sense of logic. When Windows is installed it writes certain files to the root of the C: drive....no matter what flavor or how many instances of it you have installed or how many drives/partitions.... This is the only way it knows how to behave and/or choose boot options... But glad to hear it worked for you.Sorry to jack this but I figured this would settle ALOT of confusion too. I have an IDE card an a SATA drive. I have too have one connected to the on board IDE but I'm just useing the master on the card which add's two IDE connectors. Total I have four drives possibly one died cause it was bad an I hoped that I could of got it to work. Patio it was a it works or it wont thing.Quote from: squall_01 on June 19, 2009, 05:23:31 AM Sorry to jack this but I figured this would settle alot of confusion too. Total I have four drives possibly one died cause it was bad an I hoped that I could of got it to work. Patio it was a it works or it wont thing. no hijacking threads what exactly are you trying to ACCOMPLISH squall, your goal is not clear to me.. I installed a PCI SATA card & attached the drive, it shows up in Windows but I can't boot off it. I tried installing Windows again but the drive can't be seen by Windows CD. The SATA card driver is on a CD, so how can the driver be installed with no OS present? Early on in the Setup process at the bottom of the screen you will see a prompt saying "press F6 to install additional drivers"....press F6 and then point XP to the location of the SATA controller drivers....I pressed F6 to install the Silicon Image driver for the SATA HD from a floppy. I then tried installing the driver for the SATA card by removing the Windows CD & inserting the manufacturers mini CD but Windows kept searching the Floppy drive. I thought of transferring the drivers to a Floppy Disk but there are many folders containing several ZIP files on the CD. I searched the Web for drivers but couldn't find any, possibly because the card (MY-Link) is generic. |
