Solve : System Standby/Hibernate Not Available in Windows XP SP3?

Answer»

Hi.
I have a Dell Dimension 4550 with Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2 GHz and 2 GB RAM. The hard drive has a capacity of 112 GB, of which 77 GB are free. I am running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3.

I looked in the other forums and HELP sections, but could not find anything that addressed this specifically. The CPU is about 6 years old, but a little over a year ago I upgraded the memory, etc.

For the last couple of months, system standby and hibernate have not been functional. I have read where some folks think that power saving options are more hassle than they are worth, esp. hibernation mode. I do not HAVE to have these features for my computer to work, but (A) it would be nice to have the standby mode so as not to waste energy, and (B) the fact that it was present, working perfectly for years, then all of a sudden vanished is, to me, worrisome for some sort of malware problem or registry glitch. (I have run countless antivirus & antispyware programs, and have found several bugs over the last year or so, but none seem to be present now.

Just to explain a little further, not only does system standby/hibernate not work, but in "Power Options Properties" (via system icon try or control panel), the tabs for "Advanced", "Hibernate", and "UPS" appear normal. However, the "Power Schemes" tab is useless...in the drop-down menu where you should be able to set the power scheme to normal, presentation, personal configuration, etc., my drop-down menu is completely blank, nothing at all. Nothing happens when I press "Save As" or "Delete". And, perhaps more importantly, the four options below (turn off monitor, turn off hard disks, system standby, system hibernates) are "grayed-out" (nothing appears in the menus nor can I click on anything in this area).

Lastly, around the time I noticed that standby/hibernation was not working (plus/minus a couple weeks perhaps), I kept getting error messages, such as this one I wrote down:
"System Standby Failed. The device driver for the "HP Photosmart C6100 Series (DOT4PRT)" device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If problem persists, you may need to update the driver."

Of course, the problem did persist, but when I went to the HP website..."Driver is correct and up-to-date." And in fact my HP printer was still under WARRANTY at the time, but they did not offer much assistance, saying that it was not their problem since my driver was up-to-date per the website.

Now, I don't get the error messages anymore, but standby/hibernation do not work...plus there are some weird things I can't explain like when I left click on "My Computer", I see the correct icons (for hard drive, CD Drive, etc.). But when I left click on the C drive ("Local Disk"), instead of opening my hard drive to show files/folders, it instead takes me to the "Search Page" with the canine search companion over on the left side. Drives me nuts. Just an example of some quirky things. May not be related.

I apologize for being so long-winded. I have found that when someone knows what they are talking about, they can be concise. Obviously, I do not fit that description.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

ScottQuote from: black069 on December 28, 2008, 06:47:00 AM

Try this - either at the command prompt or typed into the Run box

Dias de verano,

Thanks for the advice on how to correctly open my C: drive when I left click on it (instead of going to search companion). It did work.

Could anyone please provide assistance on how to fix my POWER OPTIONS problem as described in the first post?

Happy New Year,

Or Here...

Good Luck and let us know.
P.S. Sorry this took so long. Thanks, Patio, for the three links you found re: standby/hibernate issues. As you can see from the date on your last post here, it's been almost a month since I received them. I have TRIED to go through each of these, but it feels like the equivalent of translating a novel from Greek to Latin, when English is my primary language and my "Latin" is more like Pig Latin. So the Greek just seems like Greek. I don't say this lightly; I have spent many hours, writing multiple PAGES of notes, but as something between a novice and a low-functioning intermediate user, I just don't get it.

For example, in the rickrogers solution, the following appears within the first two sentences: First thing: Using both BIOS-based power management and Windows-based power management rarely works. If you are using both, disable one or the other.

Sometimes, reducing the power state that standby achieves can help (often a BIOS setting). Sometimes, updating a driver can help, especially a new install that is relying primarily on default drivers SUPPLIED with Windows. Default drivers don't usually cover the full spectrum of functionality, they just provide for basic function.

I have tried my absolute best to learn what a system BIOS is, but I have only a superficial understanding of it, and nothing that would qualify as applicable knowledge. And as far as updating drivers, I can do so if I know what needs an updated driver and the driver is available right in front of me. Otherwise, I have no clue. Windows Update takes care of that for me.

If it used to work, then look at what you've changed. This can mean that you added hardware, added or modified conflicting software, or that you updated some driver.

Since this problem has been going on for a few months now (with me not even knowing when it started), it could literally be any one of hundreds of things.

As for the second solution (from Microsoft's Knowledge Database), I feel like it would be a useful article if I could understand it. But it says in the beginning that the article is written at the level of the intermediate-to-advanced level user.

I'm not criticizing you by no means...just expressing my frustration. The way that my life is set out on a daily basis, it would be very helpful to have system standby and hibernate working as it did for the first five or so years I have had the computer.

Any more recommendations? If not, could you point me to good place to learn the basics of working with computers. Everything I have found either is too basic (e.g. how to perform "fast user switching") or too advanced (how to run code while parsing your partition on the WLAN network in Cisco mode). I made that last one up But seriously, know of a site that, like the medical textbooks, teaches computer functionality (vs. neurosurgery) to dummies?

Thanks a bunch. (And I haven't given up on the standby/hibernate issue, by the way.) Quote from: black069 on February 10, 2009, 12:21:00 AM
And as far as updating drivers, I can do so if I know what needs an updated driver and the driver is available right in front of me.

Well, we can probably figure out what driver it is:

Quote from: black069 on December 28, 2008, 06:47:00 AM
such as this one I wrote down:
"System Standby Failed. The device driver for the "HP Photosmart C6100 Series (DOT4PRT)" device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If problem persists, you may need to update the driver."

You haven't told us the exact model of the printer- so the best link I can give you is this:

http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Lookup?h_lang=en&h_cc=us&cc=us&h_page=hpcom&lang=en&h_client=S-A-R163-1&h_pagetype=s-002&h_query=hotosmart+C6100&submit=Go+%BB

obviously the printer itself should have the proper model number LISTED. Just click the proper model and select your OS. Go for the "Basic" driver, unless you use any particular functionality provided by the HP software you currently have installed.

best course of action once you get the driver is to remove your current driver software for the printer. This will likely be in Add/remove programs. Then install the new downloaded version.

I would return all those RAM sticks and demand a replacement...So you think its my ram 100% what if its not? could be anyting else... cpu or graphics cards?? You won't be able to tell if anything else is amiss until you have properly working RAM in there...so get new memory to rule out that outIt is not memory... Tested it with some other memory i forgot about... My computer does the same thing... I have two EVGA Nvidia Geforce 8800GTS Graphics Cards when i get my computer turned on once in a while it shows all three or four screens that i have setup and everything works correctly... could it be one of my graphics cards not working right sometimes? should i suspect CPU at all? Finally!!! .. I dont know what started this in the FIRST place but whatever it was it was dumb... When ever i remove second EVGA Nvidia GeForce 8800GTS graphics card it works just fine... when ever i put it in NOTHING shows up??? i will put this is the hardware part of the forums also. thank you everyone for dealing with me lol Sorry for jumping around but i suspected to many things and was thinking way to much my motherboard is dead contacted ASUS and just trying to the processor for a different motherboard hopefully both graphics cards work just fine.. although i did a test on ASUS to SEE what kinda of power supply i NEED for my whole computer and they SAID a 1000watt and i only have a 600watt lol im gonna have to get a new power supply or something.... im think im done with this post. thx

...... After about 5 tries, I took it to Best Buy so they could RUN some diagnostics and they found no hardware issues, but about 150 viruses. So I restored to factory settings... Which did nothing. I log in, and every time after about 20 SECONDS, the CRAZY patterns come on again and the computer restarts.
Anyone have some idea of whats GOING on?

If you restored from a Recovery Partition on the hard disk, are you certain that the recovery partition was free of any virus, and/or that your system partition was disinfected before/after the restore?

Recovery Console Password

On MANY XP installations you can't start the Recovery Console because it won't recognize your password. This registry edit causes the Recovery Console not to ask for a password. This works for both XP Home and XP Professional.

Start | Run | Regedit
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole
Set the DWORD SecurityLevel value to 1
Exit Registry and Reboot

Good luckOk, WELL so much for going it that direction. Guess I'll try a re-install

Thanks The choice is yours of course, personally I apply the regedit.

Remember that if you are re-installing the same system version the problem with accessing Recovery Console may exist after the re-install. You might want to consider trying to access Recovery Console after the re-install and if the password stonewall still appears, apply the regedit.

Whatever you decide - good luck.

If it is his system, he can DESTROY the password.
But may not work if some data has been put in private directories.

We are told here not to help people with password problems. But if you know how to Google, there is some free stuff and some not free stuff out there to help people who believe they that have a reason to bypass the security.Quote from: Geek-9pm

Solve : more drives show up in My Computer than physically exist?

Answer»

Hi, I've noticed a quirk in my system. I'm not sure it's a problem, exactly, but I'm somewhat perplexed by it.

In My Computer there are two optical drives, a flash drive, and 5 hard disk drives recognized and viewable (ie I can actually open all five). However, I only have 4 hard disk drives actually loaded in my case. I have two 80GB Seagates, and 120GB and a 160GB Western Digital drives. For some reason, there is another drive showing up with the specs: 127GB, 118GB free space. In the Hardware Device manager under System Information, only the four physical drives are recognized.

Also, I DO have an external hard drive, but it is only 40GB, and I haven't connected it in at least a year.

Can anyone offer a suggestion? I built this system in June of 2006, and to be honest, I can't say when I first noticed this phantom drive.

I'd REALLY appreciate any INSIGHT; thanks for taking the time to consider.

System specs: AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core 3800+ with 2GB of ram and an nVidia GeForce 7600 GT (256 MB I think) gfx card. My os is XP pro with sp2. Plus the aforementioned HDDs.thats pretty weird isnt it. i got the same deal.

1st physical drive installed, C:, D:, E:,

2nd physical drive installed, F:, G:, H:,

3rd phsical drive installed, I:, J:, K:,

removables: N:, O:, P:, Q:, R:, S:

opticals T:, V:

Network drive X:

And i have mystery drives designated L:, and M: in MyComputer on an Athlon powered system. I never really cared, DONT think its ever been a problem, and basically totally forgot about it until your POST reminded me of it

Go figure

One of your drives must have a 2nd partition on it...
Post a screenshot of the Disk Management Window...Some, rather Bogus CD burning programs, will create a virtual drive.

My old version of windows XP had a drive M: that showed as a CD drive, but wasn't really there at all. I could not remove it. It needed an exorcism. lol

I solved that and several other non-fixable problems in XP by setting up (Installing) XP on a new hard drive and making that my main drive.

Just a thought!

Shadow Good to seeya again Shadow...how ya been ? ?

Hi all, thanks for taking an interest - at least I'm not the only one!

here is the requested screenshot:

thanks again

[attachment deleted by admin]Most convoluted setup i've seen in awhile i have to say...
You have 4 Physical Drives in that machine...
Then you have the KINGSTON which is a 2G flash drive...
Your screen capture only shows 1 Optical drive but i'll take your word there are 2 installed...
Disk 2 if you note which i'm assuming is the WD 160 has 2 partitions on it...this is why it is being reported in My Computer as 5 drives...My Computer does not distinguish between Physical Drives and Partitions
Both physical drives and any extra partitions will be reported all as drives in My Computer...

Hope this helps more than confuses the issue.

Solve : Backing up without changing/writing over what's already been backed up??

Answer»

Hi everyone. I'm new here. I have what is maybe a unique question and I really hope you folks can help me.

A few years ago, I put everything I wanted backed up into my My Documents folder and decided that would be the only folder in which I'd ever store anything I wanted backed up. I backed up TEN years worth of everything (documents, images, videos, and my music library) to my EXTERNAL drive. It TOOK a very long time and as a result, I haven't sat down to back anything up since.

Here's my question: Is there a way for me to back up only the files/folders that have been added/updated without touching the stuff that's already on the external drive? Is there a command line I can use or SOMETHING?

(Also... the last time I backed up, all my files were saved as "Read Only." I don't know why it would do that or if it's normal but if there's a way to stop that from happening, I'd love to know it.)

Thanks everyone!Double post - please CONTINUE here..

Solve : Problem in, C:\ program files?

Answer»

On my computers hard DRIVE under program files I have a game INSTALLED. I uninstalled the game to fix a problem I was having but noticed that some files ASSOCIATED with that game are still in my system. When I tried to delete them they wouldn't delete. So I clicked on the file to see what was still there I got this error message, C:\program files\game\objects refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network The file properties said it was empty so I reinstalled the game thinking it would not cause any problems. However this old file still interferes with the game by merging itself with the new install. If the file is empty why? Any suggestions. Thanks AlotIt would seem that you did not do a proper un install. When you remove a program there can be some files left. This is a problem with the way windows does things and the way program developers understand things.

If the files are small,
there should not be a problem just leaving them. Geek-9pm is correct, the game hasn't uninstalled correctly.

Try restarting and deleting them from cmd using the DELTREE comandThanks I will try another un install and install. It could have been just a one TIME thing.

Solve : Compaq Presario 5000 series, Dosnt boot??

Answer»

okay HI, I have a Compaq presario 5000 series that's been sitting in a closet for quite sometime now. It was working fine the day I stored it away. Okay anyways, I wanted to give it to my Brother to use. So I hooked up everything and started the computer. It started up normally, no unusual sounds, But the screen just stays on the Compaq logo screen with a blinking light on the top right hand corner. I don't know what to do as of now. I have the recovery CD and everything, i just cant boot it because the computer wont start up that far.

Its been on the Compaq screen for at least 30Min's now.

Can someone please help me? Did the post run before the compaq screen came on? I'm not really familar with this series of machine but if it didn't go into the bios and disable quick boot or quite boot.It wont let me go into the bios. Once I press power, the screen warms up and then goes to the Compaq screen. Theres no press f-whatever to go to biosThats normal on some systems, as that is a quite or quick boot. Most laptops have this by default and desktop systems like this.

When hit the power button start tapping either delete, F1 or F2 these are the usual buttons to get into the bios.

To me it sounds like the OS is either not being found or there is an issue with the hard drive, try reseating it.

Why the POST helps is that it will tell you if it is either the ram that is not being passed or hdd not being detected etc.

But yeah sounds like the OS is not being found.

Alright ill try that.

If the OS cannot be found, then what now? If i can can get to the bios and have it boot from the cd with the Recover CD TAKE care of all that?Well it depends if the HDD has gone, or not, or if something has came lose like the ATA cable that connects from the Mobo to the HD or power to the hard drive.

But basically the first thing is to atleast see the post so you know whats going on because that compaq screen is really not much to go on other than your on board graphics is ok and that your mother board/cpu is ok, your ram or hard drive is the likely problem imo.hmm, ill double check everything inside.

I happen to FIND the manuel that came with the computer.
it says for entering bis press F-10 when the cursor is blinking on the top right hand corner of the screen with the compaq logo. and thats what I did.
It DIDNT do anything. Still on the same screen.Do you have any led's on the board such as Cap lock, num lock ect? Do they come on maybe the keyboard is not responding or getting power, is it usb or ps/2? I find ps/2 plug pins bend really easily. If the lights are not comming on check that the plug is in and the pins are fine.

Some other things you can try is booting up with a boot disc and seeing if you can get in that way.

Solve : can't log in, no option?

Answer»

I have XP pro. I installed a driver for my usb bluetooth device so i could update it. it asked me RESTART, i clicked no since i wasn't done working, then clicked restart later. i come back and it hadn't restarted. i click shut down, the little shut down menu closes, but it just stays going. i try to shut down from task manager and it's the same thing. i try to log off, switch user, everything, and nothing works. so i hold the power button and turn it off. when i restart, it goes normal then when it comes to the welcome screen, my icon and username aren't there. it's blank, just the background with no users. there isn't even an option to shut down or anything. i restarted in safe mode, and it was the same thing. if i try to hit enter or something, my system speaker beeps. i need this to work fast. What happens if you press CTRL+ALT+DEL at the user login screen?Nothing. If i hit Enter or Escape, i get a beep, but that's it.Did you try Last Known Good Configuration at the advanced startup screen?

Have you tried booting with the device disconnected? Both options, same result.Do you have your windows CD?no, i can't find it. i run xp pro, would a regular xp disc work? i think the issue is my logonui.exe, which i saw was running when i first tried to shut down. it might be messed up. i found a program that would fix it, but i don't know how to run it. it says "Run "logrecvr.exe" from either DOS or Windows". I obviously can't run it in windows, so how would i run it in dos? i just need to get in somehow and run this program or uninstall the driver i installed right before i had this problemTry this:

Thanks BroniWill this just fix any messed files? i don't want it changing all my settings, etc. Will my MS UPDATES and stuff be there still? It'll only fix (if it's able to do so) your boot files. It won't break anything.

I dont expect a intelligent answer because i cant give you an intelligent question at the moment. I tried getting BACK into ventrilo and for about 15 mins I wasnt able to. When i did get back in all my sound settings were gone. I fixed my sound setting then went back in game..about 5 mins later i crashed again and BRIEFLY saw a blue screen. I have scanned and defraged and there is nothing wrong... my programs say. Today when i got on and the pc booted up to the desk top I got a MESSAGE that said something like the registery has been changed and my system used a back up to RESTORE the registry and that it was successful. The pc is just not acting like it did...something is wrong...and I have no idea where to start to look. Do you?

Solve : Windows XP SP3 Defragmenting Problems...?

Answer»

Hello and good day, thanks for reading my topic. I seem to be having this problem with defragging my 40GB harddrive. When I tried to do my last monthly defrag, I STARTED the app and pressed the defrag button and got this:

Error: Disk Defragmenter COULD not start.

I then installed a trail of Diskeeper 2009 Home Edition and Defraggler, both of which could not defrag, so I uninstalled them both. Could something actually be wrong with my harddrive, or some essential file? Oh, and I also have this HijackThis system log file, if that helps.

Thank you for reading and possibly responding.

[attachment deleted by admin]Actually your issue MAY be with the install of DisKeeper...although MS GOBBLED them up for awhile DisKeeper actually replaces the built in defrag in Windows when it's installed.
So un-installing it doesn't always restore Windows defrag as it should...
Do me a favor...
DLoad and install Auslogics Defrag (FREE) and after installing it POWER down and re-boot.
Then run Disk cleanup from the Accesories/Tools menu.
Then see if Auslogics runs...i bet it will. Thank you very much patio.

Everything is working now. And also, thank you for showing me that defragmenter. It's very nice. You're more than Welcome...glad you like it.
Stop by anytime...

Thank you everyone for your help. It was a hard drive issue and I have now installed a fresh version of windows xp sp3!! Although things seem a bit slow its going well.

Your hard drive should have had NOTHING to do with your computer's INABILITY to boot to a disk.
How did you determine that it was the hard drive at FAULT?
Did you buy a new one?
If your machine is running slower than it was before the fresh install, then you should be worried.Probably slow because the MBoard drivers haven't been installed yet...everyone seems to forget this step when re-installing.Quote from: patio on January 19, 2009, 06:29:22 AM
Probably slow because the MBoard drivers haven't been installed yet...everyone seems to forget this step when re-installing.

How would I go about installing those?

I determined it was a hard drive issue because when I inserted another clean/formatted hard drive and re installed windows it worked fine. So That doesnt mean it was a hard drive issue, I actually do not know the cuase of my problem but Its working fine now so im satisfied.Patio?Father?....Sorry,
Just got back.
If you have a CD labeled Drivers that shipped with your machine just put it in and it may start by itself...if not open Windows Explorer and look for a Setup icon and click it...
If you don't have that CD DLoad; install and run Everest Home which will give us all your machine info...save the log to atext file and copy and paste the computer summary portion and we'll SEE about tracking down your correct drivers.Ok ,thanks

Solve : NT4 compatibility with XP?

Answer»

I have an old DOS PROGRAM we use for our business installed on an NT4 system. The program is shared out and mapped to our network. The motherboard (ABIT BP6 DUAL PROC)is failing FAST (leaking capacitors) so I NEED to either replace the board with something that will be NT4 compatible and boot up on first try, or move the drive to another machine that will read the NT drive.
All of our other network PC's are XP PRO. The NT4 box is our server, about 10 YEARS old.
I no longer have a hard copy of the program to install on another PC.
I am afraid if I shut down the NT box, it will not boot again. I have ordered the capacitors to try and repair the ABIT, but even if that is sucessful the drive can not last forever. We need this system all day every day and would very much appreciate any thoughts or ideas. The Best thing to do is Look around for the part if there is No Parts you could look at a specialist Dealers for the old Computer parts. I normally buy my pc parts from COmputer Fairs First thing I would do is to ghost the machine...make an image and/or a full backup. This way you have a safety net just in case the machine goes down. Next I would get the model number of the part and google the web for a replacement. I would also suggest looking for the company that made the software and if they are STILL around see if you can get replacement CDs or even a new version of the software.

By the way are you running a BDC? And what does this DOS program do? Have you looked into trying to find another vendor who would sell something like what you have that will run on newer machines?

Solve : Problem after Factory restore.?

Answer»

Im new here, and looking for some help. I did a factory restore on my Gateway LX4200-01-e, and it was working fine UNTILL it restarted and was on the "please wait while windows continues setting up your computer". The power went off in my HOUSE (due to thunder) and when it came back on an error came up saying, "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows Installation cannot proceed. To install windows, Click OK, to restart, and then restart the installation". It keeps saying this, I ordered A recovery CD from gateway, but was wondering if anyone knew a way around this of something to fix it while I wait?

Any help is great.us Thanks.usYou will need recovery CD... I am guessing you were recovering from the D: restore partition to C: when this happened and C: needs to FUNCTION properly to access D: restore or you need the CD.

Dont feel too bad, a dog PULLED the power cord out of a laptop in the middle of a Fat32 to NTFS conversion and my friend lost all his data a few years back. It happens to all of us!

I would invest in a $40 UPS Battery Backup THOUGH.i've had that problem where computer was doing updates, and the power went off and when I restarted pc, couldn't restore it back. So just had to reinstall from cd, though I was happy that the stuff I lost wasn't major.

Solve : Reboot Repair problem with HP Pavilion DV6000?

Answer»

The computer is an HP Pavilion DV6000, a solid decently priced laptop computer. Nowadays when I start it up after shutting down the normal menu shutdown way, it will automatically into repair mode, which takes several MINUTES, giving the reason that I didn't shut it down properly. I did, so is there some other EXPLANATION? A virus? Or is there a command I can give it or a button to make it stop? Because it slows down the PROCESS, it doesn't seem to do anything else

Any help would be appreciated Still under warranty?QUOTE from: Broni on June 07, 2009, 09:45:03 PM

Still under warranty?

No it isn't, and anyway, I was hoping for a practical solution, but thanx anyway. Is this XP ? ?

Solve : Wireless Internet Problem?

Answer»

I have a wireless internet problem. I FUNCTION fine when I am hard wired into my router but when I am working in a wireless mode, I have very inconsistent results. The biggest problem is that once I get onto many web pages, I cannot go further onto the page. I click on something or try to access additional information on a page and my computer will run for several minutes before I get a cannot access message. But the problem is intermittent. It will work fine sometimes but many times it doesn't. If I reconfirm IP address, it will work fine for a few minutes but then it will start to ACT up again. Connection strength looks good so I don't think it is DUE to a weak signal. It almost seems like my computer gets stuck trying to drill deeper into a web site. It STARTS to download but then just seems to stall. Sometimes if I hit REFRESH, the info will pop right up. But many times that doesn't work either. Does anyone have any ideas? Please help. Thanks.

OK;MANY THANKS ;SO I GUESS,FROM WHAT YOU SAID,THERE IS NOTHING ELSE TO LOOK FOR AND DELETE... Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 20, 2009, 06:43:31 PM

it's fairly simple what happened.

The first OS on the PC was windows 95,98,98SE or ME.

windows 2000 was then installed- which placed itself, by default, in C:\WINNT, leaving the old install in C:\WINDOWS.

Windows XP was installed, and that overwrote the first windows install in C:\windows, however the XP setup program, not knowing any better, kept the boot.ini entry that windows 2000 had made for it.

the end.

that seems accurate..

@gracika........don't worry about the other Operating System, there's nothing you can do about it

Happy Computing not necessarily- I was simply cutting off blockhead's POSSIBLE wild-goose chase

Folders you might not need:

"Dell" (what's inside this?)
"Inetpub" Do you run a web server? IF not- delete this.
"pra" Not sure what this is.
Progra~1 : probably a old relic from when windows 95/98 was the main OS. What's inside here? Any programs you use? you can probably delete this safely.thnk you for all the help!we are good to go now!

HAPPY WEEKEND AND THANKS GUYS FOR HELPING!At this point, it probably wouldn't hurt to run a system defrag. And a "disk clean Up"

START>All programs>Accessories>system tools> disk defrag./disk clean up

And to be sure there are no nasties on the system, download install, UPDATE and run a full scan with Malwarebytes......"Spybot Search and Destroy" is a good one too, just DON'T install the "tea timer", if you are GOING to try Spybot

edit: an uh, thanks for the bail-out, BC ok;will do;thanks again;one more question:is it true that windows xp service pack 3 is not good?I got it in here as an update,SHALL I get rid of it?I have it installed right now- no problems.

Solve : File Missing (Recently Installed Windows)?

Answer»

I had finally installed Windows XP: Home on my new 500GB HDD. Everything seemed FINE, I had installed updates SP3 and everything except the grahics driver (Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family, which seems hard to find, even on the Intel site). I had downloaded the zip file since the EXE one didn't work even though I put my correct OS System.

I seemed to work until I restarted my laptop. I get black screen which says:

Windows could not start because the following file is missin or corrupted:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM
Select 'r' t the first screen to start repair.

I'm not sure what to do. I put in my CD and I selected one but not sure what to type.

Why would it be missing or corrupted after installing a Intel graphics driver?

Edit: I tried to do a repair but the option wasn't there. I am now reinstalling Windows I have the most BAD LUCK!!!Comprehensive instructions for fixing the problems you're having are on the following website: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_sys32.htm.

Do not blow dry a water problem. That influences oxygenation which in turn creates rust.too metal, there are a number of other things that could be wrong with it an its not possible to do that since there enclosed for protection. I would attempt data recovery an get a NEW one.Quote from: squall_01 on June 21, 2009, 07:33:02 AM

Or you can IGNORE this. You just need to give time to let it dry out. Then we can see what is wrong. If you took the drive out an let it air dry we could see if its okay or not.

Solve : Game movie audio out of sync?

Answer»

Hi. I recently upgraded my motherboard to a ASUS PQ5 pro and my graphics card to a XENON GTX 260 896MB 448bit. I've updated all my drivers and everything seems to be in order however all my games as showing the same problem: in-GAME movies such as .BIK files are running the video increasingly faster than the audio i.e. it STARTS in sync, but gets worse as the movie plays on. This isn't game-breaking, but it is annoying and I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix it. Normal AVI files run fine and gameplay sound runs fine too, so I'm kind of at a loss as to how to approach this.Exactly what games are we talking about here? Impossible to answer the question without knowing. There are literally thousands of different games that use Bink.I've seen it happen with prototype, the ghostbusters game, bully and both KOTOR games. I figure it's a universal issue, since they were all fine before.

I should have mentioned, I use the on-board sound from the motherboard, which takes realtek drivers. What sound quality is your Realtek card set to? 44100Hz or 48000Hz? Or something different?I was going to say theres the problem. Actually, I just ask because I know Bink 1.9i finally corrected a problem with audio synchronization when the sound card was set to 48000Hz and the Bink video was using 44100Hz. This was only fixed about 6 or 7 months ago, so most any game that was published with a version of Bink prior to the fix will have this issue.I thought that its cause its lower quality sound, thus it could keep up or something.Quote from: quaxo on June 21, 2009, 06:28:10 AM

What sound quality is your Realtek card set to? 44100Hz or 48000Hz? Or something different?

Where might I check for this?Double-click the Realtek icon in the system tray, this should open the Realtek Audio Manager. Click the 'Speakers' tab, then the 'Default Format' tab.

There should be a little pull down menu there. Select 44100Hz, either 16 or 24-bit quality.sorry ment to say couldnt, course till I got updated drivers for my sound card the same thing happened as well. I would start there.Quote from: quaxo on June 21, 2009, 09:58:48 PM

Well, that fixed the syncing problem, which is awesome, but the quality took a bit of a dive. Now I get a slight bit of static during these movies. AVI files are STILL fine and it's tolerable, bit if there is a way to have the best of both worlds then I'll bake you a pie.

Either way, thanks for the advice.Did you pick 16 or 24 bit? Some people notice a difference between the two, some don't. There are going to be the selected few. I would have 24 bit but thats just me.Quote from: quaxo on June 22, 2009, 03:09:37 AM
Did you pick 16 or 24 bit? Some people notice a difference between the two, some don't.

I don't have that option. I just have 44.1K, 48K, 96K and 192K. I also have an option no s/pdif output or output digital audio source. This is on the Realtek HD Audio Manager which has an ASUS logo. These setting where in a slightly different spot since I didn't have a speakers tab, just an Audio I/O tab. It's shot in the dark, but it won't hurt anything to try this.

1. Start -> Run...
2. TYPE in 'dxdiag' and push OK. This will open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
3. Click the 'Sound' tab.
4. Move the 'Hardware Sound Acceleration Level' SLIDER to 'Normal' (if it's on 'Full') or 'Full' (if it's on 'Normal').

With some things this can correct sound problems. If it doesn't fix it, or if it gets worse, move it back to the previous position.

Here's what you should do:

I use ("WbemScripting.SWbemLocator").ConnectServer method (you must follow and specify the parameters of course e.g. username, password, etc.) plus the namespace (connect to e.g. "root\default") to connect to ANY remote machine and then perform QUERIES or commands using specified CLASS (properties and methods). Solve : questions about hard drive partitions?

Answer»

JJ 3000: Thank you for helping!! The process was a lot quicker than I expected to make the partitions.

I installed Windows 2000 and everything seems okay.

How do I go about formatting and using the D: drive/partition?

I attached a screen capture of the disk management so you can see how it looks on Windows 2000 and which drives are there (please ignore F: drive thats listed there. I forgot I had the Sandisk SD card plugged in when I took the screen capture).

[attachment deleted by admin]The first thing you want to do after installing windows is make sure that all of your drivers loaded. Click Start then Run and type in devmgmt.msc and press enter. This will take you device manager. If you see any yellow question marks or exclamation points you will need a driver for that device.

After that go to windows update and get all of the updates that are available for your computer.

After you've done that, then you can move onto setting up your new partition.
Just right click that new partition and select format. Use the NTFS file system.

Good luck!I have gone into the device manager as you suggested. I only saw two question marks but I don't know if I even use the items which the question marks had appeared next to. I took a screen capture so you could see.

I ALSO checked at Windows updates and downloaded everything they said was a high priority update. There were a few other after that but I didn't know if should install them because I don't know if they're security-related. I took a screen capture of that too.

After that, I formatted the D: drive. When I right-clicked on it the little window had two other boxes which said "Perform a quick format" and "Enable file and folder compression". I formatted D: drive but did not check either of those boxes. Was that correct?

[attachment deleted by admin]You need to re-install your MBoard chipset drivers...
The MISSING PCI device drivers can cause a whole host of issues with that machine's performance...creating partitions/volumes on the same disk to save backup COPIES is not a good solution. when you create backups of your files, transfer them to a separate disk or media and ALWAYS save them in a format that a common malware does not touch or cannot normally modify. For example: .ISO, .NRG files; these files can be burned to a DVD-RW/DVD9-RW as well. You can schedule backups.

You can also use NT backup or disk images to backup your files (you can use DVD-RW or DVD9-RW if you dont have a separate disk) - they're EASY to create and restore. That way you don't have to reformat and manually reinstall everything (your apps, your OS,your drivers, your files, etc.). All it takes is a 5-15 minute wait - that's the fastest way to recover your files and OS state. You have to create backups on a regular basis. Make it your habit.

Patio: the PCI thing is the motherboard? I thought it was one of those cards like you plug into the slot on the side of the computer (like a modem card). I'll have to check and see if I have a driver for that. I'm not using the original software for this computer so it didn't LOAD drivers for it when I installed Windows. I had to get them from Dell's website.cyrusrynlee: The files I wanted to put on D: are all my personal files from my computer (photos, music, etc.) They're the original files not a backup. Only the OS and programs are on C: drive. I don't have DVD-ROM drive and never had made those type of files mentioned. If I back up my personal files, I just save them to CD-ROM and Sandisk SD cards. My computer does not play or burn DVDs (it's an older model).

I was thinking of getting an external DVD writer but haven't yet. Do they come with programs to make the ISO files you mentioned? When you make those to you have to use a new disk every time or does the updated version overwrite the older one?

Solve : Dual Booting WinXP & WinXP?

Answer»

If the 2nd install of XP was not done with the 1st install in place no bootloader in the world is going to help you...
You will need to use the BIOS option to boot to whatever drive you choose...I forgot to mention, the drives are SATA so jumpers are not an issue. Both SATA sockets on the motherboard are in use, so I will have to get a SATA card.Worth noting that drive (partition) letter allocations change when the OS is booted from the slave drive.

e.g.
Consider a hardware setup with 2 physical drives each having 2 partitions.

When booted from the Master the partition letter allocations are:

Master C: and D:
Slave E: and F:

When booted from the Slave the partition letter allocations are:

Master E: and D:
Slave C: and F:

It can get a bit confusing especially when working at the command prompt.

I'm not sure where you are coming from here... I just did an install of XP when only one HDD was present on the system.. I then removed that drive and PUT a different HDD on the system, installed XP, Mastered one HDD and Slaved the other... Then I edited the boot.ini file on the BOOTABLE HDD (the one set first in CMOS), restarted, and I got my DUAL boot options..(boot.ini file appeared) But what if you have them as masters? Sorry dont mean too but kind of getting an answer too not that ...How can you have both PATA drives set as MASTERS on an IDE chain and expect them to work? What exactly do you mean, squall?

edit: oh did you mean, "what if they are both SATA"? don't know, but I would bet it would work the same as if they were PATA............with the exception of being able to master and slave themYou can set two PATA drives as master as long as they are on different IDE controllers. For example I had a computer with one drive set as master and the optical drive set as slave on IDE controller 0 and the other hard drive was also set as master on controller 1.Quote from: blockHEAD on June 17, 2009, 11:13:08 PM

I'm suprised it worked for you but Windows cannot be explained in any sense of logic.
When Windows is installed it writes certain files to the root of the C: drive....no matter what flavor or how many instances of it you have installed or how many drives/partitions....
This is the only way it knows how to behave and/or choose boot options...

But glad to hear it worked for you.Sorry to jack this but I figured this would settle ALOT of confusion too. I have an IDE card an a SATA drive. no hijacking threads

what exactly are you trying to ACCOMPLISH squall, your goal is not clear to me.. I installed a PCI SATA card & attached the drive, it shows up in Windows but I can't boot off it. I tried installing Windows again but the drive can't be seen by Windows CD. The SATA card driver is on a CD, so how can the driver be installed with no OS present?
Early on in the Setup process at the bottom of the screen you will see a prompt saying "press F6 to install additional drivers"....press F6 and then point XP to the location of the SATA controller drivers....I pressed F6 to install the Silicon Image driver for the SATA HD from a floppy. I then tried installing the driver for the SATA card by removing the Windows CD & inserting the manufacturers mini CD but Windows kept searching the Floppy drive.

I thought of transferring the drivers to a Floppy Disk but there are many folders containing several ZIP files on the CD. I searched the Web for drivers but couldn't find any, possibly because the card (MY-Link) is generic.

I'm running windows XP 5.1 -- when I turn on my computer, I get a pop up that says

"THE FEATURE YOU ARE TRYING TO USE IS ON A CD-ROM OR OTHER REMOVEABLE DISC THAT IS NOT AVAILABLE. INSERT THE DISC AND CLICK OK"

Above the type-in box it reads 'USE SOURCE" with the number "1" in the type in box

When I try to click off that, I get the message:

"AN INSTALLATION PACKAGE FOR THE PRODUCT "STATUS" CANNOT BE FOUND. TRY THE INSTALLATION AGAIN USING A VALID COPY OF THE INSTALLATION PACKAGE "STATUS.MSI"

There is no way to get rid of these annoying pop-ups. Help!

Thank you,

Beak
what brand of PRINTER do you own?HP Deskhjet F4180ahh, EXCELLENT. This is actually a known issue with some HP printer software.

Try reinstalling the software that came with your printer.

This fellow had a similar issue:

http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistahardware/thread/fc920e97-956f-411e-98d2-e79a4602cacf

It seems to be related to the "easy printer status" component of the HP software. when you reinstall, you can probably not install that particular component by selecting custom and unselecting it. i cant read my email the keep saying that am offline and when i try to reslove the problem they say am should download a dobe FLASH player when i try to do that they say i should try again due to connection error Quote from: darkangel(#1) on June 22, 2009, 02:57:00 PM

Solve : "System DLL user32.dll ..."?

Answer»

Hey I've recently installed a "BEAUTY FEATURE" CALLED Crystal XP and since that I've been getting this ERROR everytime I try to start VLC media player and several other programs.

"System DLL user32.dll has been moved in the internal memory. The Program will not be able to launch. The move occured because the DLL-file C:\Windows\system32\SHELL32.DLL took a memory address which was reserved for Window's system-DLL files. Contact the supplier of the DLL-file to correct this error."

I have no idea why this is happening and even less about how to fix it, so if anyone has some quick cure that would be great!

Thank you.

Solve : Excel?

Answer»

I NEED help with multiplying CELLS in Excel. I don't know if I'm using the right formula.

=PRODUCT(B2:B11, B3)

I have $20.00 INSERTED into cell B2. It is multiplying correctly anything I insert into B3 through B11. My total shows up in B12. However, if I CLEAR all info. in cells B3 through B11, there is still a total of $20.00 in B12. I don't want it to show a total of $20.00 if I don't have anything I have multiplied in that row.

I probably don't make much sense, but any help is appreciated.Apparently, your SUM formula in B12 must include cell B2, where you have $20. Is that right?

Solve : windows xp start up problems?

Answer»

I have a windows xp at home that would freeze immediately after the desk top appeared. The cursor arrow would remain frozen in the middle of the screen. The only way to get to my email and INTERNET (earthlink) was by using it in safe mode. Now even that will not work. Upon start up, a new screen comes up for a security system I have never heard of. It asks to scan the computer and finds all these viruses. I cannot get to the homepage (earthlink) or anywhere else. This new screen cannot be closed out, it just sits there and does not allow anything else to APPEAR. Any help would be appreciated.Do you have a copy of windows to boot from?yesOk.... Verifying DMI Pool Data ........
Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM :
Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM :
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

I enter my XP disk and press enter.

The computer reboots into windows startup and loads all files.

From there it states:

-To setup Windos XP now, press Enter
-To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
-To quit WITHOUT installing Windows XP, press F3.

I have tried all and non work. What do I do? How about 'buy a new hard drive'?
I know it is not funny, but...
First - check if Your hard drive is being recognized in BIOS.It doesn't look like it is... Leave Your computer without power for a while and try again. It sometimes helps to get it back. Also You can check the cable connections of Your hdd, though I doubt it is the problem. But the first suggestion is still there. If You are not able to access to Your hdd at all, You can try to retrieve the data following this LINK...
...or wait for someone else, more aknowledged It looks like bad hard drive.

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the BRAND of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD, and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, which is not listed, try using Hitachi tools.

Solve : Windows XP - Blue Screen of Death?

Answer»

I am getting the Blue Screen of Death when I try to start my computer. When I go into set-up mode it says none of the devices are working. I tried putting in the windows xp cd, but it will not recognize the drive. It won't recognize any drives, actually.

Here is what I am looking at. It's a Dell Dimension 4700:

Drive 0: ST380013AS - FAIL. Return code: 7
Drive 1: No device
Drive 2: JLMS DVD-ROM XJ-HD166 - Diagnostics not supported
Drive 3: HL-DT-ST GCE-8483B - Diagnostics not supportedHmmm, return code 7 means, a lot of times, hard drive failure. You may need to get a new hard drive I hope that is not the case, I need some files off of here.Clear CMOS

Open the computer case and look for the CMOS battery.
Make sure you are grounded before touching any internal components. Static electricity can fry the MOTHERBOARD!
While you are in there, I would also, blow out the dust with a can of compressed AIR and make sure that the CD drive's data cable is plugged in properly, and the jumper is in the right position.

Have you tried more that one optical drive? Did you use the same data cable?Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.

How can he run HD diagnostics if he cant use his CD drive? We don't know that yet, because it may be boot order issue. Not explained, so far.
